Royal honour for Adele

Singing star Adele has been honoured at Buckingham Palace, being made a Member of the Order of the British Empire by Prince Charles. The 25-year-old with the soulful voice has become a worldwide star since her debut album topped the charts in 2008. Last year she performed the title song in the latest James Bond film Skyfall, for which she received an Academy Award. Adele has recovered from throat problems that jeopardised her singing voice two years ago. She won a record six Grammy awards in 2012. – AP

Thicke named Sexist of the Year Robin Thicke has been named the sexist of the year by a body representing dozens of women’s groups around the UK. The singer achieved fame and notoriety on the back of his single Blurred Lines, which was accompanied by a video in which he was surrounded by naked dancing models. Thicke topped the voting in a poll conducted by the End Violence Against Women Coalition, with Prime Minister David Cameron runner-up for the second successive year. The coalition – which has more than 60 member groups working to end sexual and domestic violence, trafficking and other forms of abuse - also highlighted comments Thicke had made in interviews. In one for GQ magazine earlier this year, he said: “People say, ‘Hey, do you think this is degrading to women?’ I’m like, ‘Of course it is. What a pleasure it is to degrade a woman. I’ve never gotten to do that before’.” – PA

Embarrassing moment Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence was left mortified after a hotel maid discovered a stash of sex toys under her bed. The Hunger Games actress was recently gifted a box of bedroom aids by a pal, and she decided to hide them under her bed in a hotel suite before a cleaning lady called. However, she was overcome with embarrassment when she returned to her room to find the items all on display on a bedside table. She told US TV host Conan O’Brien that “the maid was coming so I was like, ‘Well I’ll just shove this under the bed so she doesn’t see all these butt plugs. She might not know they are for a joke.’ Then I came back and all of them were brought out of the bed and were in this beautiful display on my bedside table. I think she knew what she was doing. They were under the bed. I wanted to leave a note like, ‘not mine’ or ‘bought as joke’.” – WENN

Adelaide’s big roach It’s no secret Australians love all things big. There’s the big banana, the big pineapple and South Australia even has the big lobster. Now Adelaide has the big cockroach. The four-metre-long metal insect has been installed in Rundle Mall after a public campaign to save it from destruction. The cockroach emerged in the late 1990s, built as a protest by property owners at Lower Light, north of the city, who were angry about the state government’s plans to build a waste dump in the area. The roach stayed despite the idea of the dump long being abandoned. But it went missing a few weeks ago, prompting a Facebook campaign to find where it went and to ensure it wasn’t reduced to scrap. The initial post attracted more than a million hits, apparently from South Australians and insect lovers around the world who feared for the roach’s wellbeing. – AAP

■ DEFAMATION CASE

Police commissioner targeted

BY JIMMY ELLINGHAM

Four disgruntled police officers are threatening to sue Police Commissioner Peter Marshall, who they say did nothing to scotch false suggestions they were linked to a corrupt former cop. The officers were part of the

management team at Christchurch South police station, where former Constable Gordon Meyer was based. They have put Mr Marshall on notice of “imminent defamation action” and are upset police top brass didn’t correct the public perception that there were “leadership and opera-

tional” problems at the station. This week Meyer was sentenced to nine months’ home detention for bribery and indecent assault. He told a suspected drink-driver she could avoid being charged if she performed oral sex on him, and groped an 18-year-old while giving her a lift in his patrol car.

Christchurch lawyer Grant Cameron is acting for the aggrieved officers who say they will file a defamation claim against Mr Marshall. Police Association president Greg O’Connor said the organisation was backing the officers, who had been “hung out to dry”. - APNZ

■ DIFFERING SCHOOL CLOSURES

Schools regulated as to length of terms BY MYLES HUME

MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

The final few Mid Canterbury schools shut their gates for good for 2013 yesterday, but why do schools cause so much confusion by closing on different days? Tinwald School was one of the last remaining Mid Canterbury schools open this year as it yesterday capped off its final 384th half day. Ashburton and Mount Hutt colleges closed on Thursday and Friday, respectively, last week with Ashburton Christian School (ACS) also closing on Friday. Ashburton Borough ended its year on Monday while Hampstead decided to close on Wednesday. That’s despite most schools starting on the same day this year. Tinwald School principal Peter Livingstone said schools were required to operate a minimum number of half days a year, and the reason why his school ended 2013 yesterday, like many others, was because of a teacher only day held in June. It meant he had to make up that day at the end of the year. “I guess if you have three kids all at different schools such as a primary school, inter-

mediate and college it would be quite hard on some parents,” he said. The Ministry of Education states primary and intermediate schools must operate 384 working days, each day consisting of at least four hours, with one of those hours being in the afternoon. Secondary schools and

composite schools, which are schools – like ACS - that provide for pupils under and over Year eight, have to open their gates for 380 half days. Each school is regulated as to how many half days they should be open each term. Next year, Mr Livingstone said all 23 Mid Canterbury schools were planning to begin

on February 3, which he hoped would cater better for parents with pupils at differing schools. Next year primary and intermediate schools have been instructed to stay open for 386 half days, which equates to about one more extra day compared with this year, while secondary and composite schools will remain at 380.

■ ROYAL TOUR 2014

Plans afoot to lure royals here By Erin TaskEr

erin.t@theguardian.co.nz

News that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – with baby Prince George in tow – will visit New Zealand next year has got Experience Mid Canterbury manager Nigel Birt thinking. He’s thinking about how amazing it would be if Prince William and Kate came to visit Mid Canterbury as part of that tour – a tour which will be Kate’s first tour to the region, and the first ever official overseas visit for baby George. “It would be a great opportunity, but it’s about figuring out how we could achieve that. It’s finding something that could link in with that, but I’m not quite sure how to achieve that,” Mr Birt said. He said the chances of the royals visiting Mid Canterbury were probably low, but making a pitch to try and attract them here was worth a shot. The hotly-anticipated tour is expected to be around three and a half weeks’ long, and take in both New Zealand and Australia. Prince William and Kate will spend between a week and 10 days on official engagements in both countries, beginning in New Zealand. But with rest days and travel, the entire trip will take the best part of a month, UK newspaper The Express reports. The visit will be great exposure for New Zealand, Mr Birt said, and Mid Canterbury could hold some attraction for the baby who will one day be king. “Obviously we do produce some very good baby formula

Parakeets relocated Seventeen critically endangered native parakeets have been transported from the South Island to predator-free Tuhua/ Mayor Island in the Bay of Plenty, to save them from a predicted plague of predators in the beech forests where they live. The orange-fronted parakeets have been brought to the brink of extinction by introduced predators - particularly stoats and rats, Department of Conservation ranger John Heaphy said. It was estimated there were only about 200 of the parakeets left in three areas of alpine forest in the South Island. - APNZ

Marine reserve plans Canterbury’s popular tourist spot Akaroa Harbour is set to become a marine reserve to recognise the marine environment as the “new frontier for conservation”. Conservation Minister Dr Nick Smith announced yesterday the new marine reserve will come into effect on World Oceans Day next June 8. “This new reserve will ensure better conservation of its marine life and add value to Akaroa as a tourism destination,” he said. The 475-hectare reserve covers the south east corner of Akaroa Harbour and includes the area surrounding the spectacular Dan Rogers Bluff. - APNZ

here,” Mr Birt said. But it’s likely to take more than that to bring the family here. “If we could come up with an idea to explore, we would get out and have a look at the networks we have got,” Mr Birt said.

The royal visit will mirror Prince William’s first foreign tour at the same age when he visited in 1983, when his parents Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, showed him off to New Zealand. Prince William has visited New Zealand four times in the

past, most recently in March 2011 to attend the Christchurch Earthquake Memorial Service and to visit families of the Pike River miners. Further details about the royal tour, including dates and an itinerary, will be released by Kensington Palace next year.

■ STEPHEN MCIVOR

Spinal fluid, not blood around brain By TEuila FuaTai Broadcaster Stephen McIvor says days of headaches and pain following his Fight for Life boxing match was caused by spinal fluid in his brain, rather than bleeding. The 48-year-old, who drew with journalist Steve Kilgallon on Saturday night, was admitted to Auckland hospital on Thursday night after becoming concerned for his welfare. The Sky TV sports anchor told APNZ he received “one good crack in the head” during the fight - which eventually ended in a draw. After days of managing the pain with medicine it eventually became too much.

In brief

Stephen McIvor

“Yesterday, it just got a bit worse. I was gardening and every time I lifted or jarred something it just went straight to my head.”

A CT scan taken on Thursday night indicated McIvor who has three children - had a small brain bleed, but results of an MRI taken earlier yesterday showed it was actually spinal fluid. “Obviously being punched had just released that around the front of my brain, and the CT scan had thought it was blood and the MRI this morning showed it wasn’t.” McIvor, who was back home last evening after being discharged, welcomed the news. “It means I don’t have to be on any hard drugs, I can just be on Panadol and then I go back for a CT scan in six weeks. “The neuro surgeons are extremely happy, as am I.”

Earlier yesterday, McIvor said getting fit had helped him stay positive while undergoing tests. “You get scared when someone is going to have to potentially dig into your melon, but boxing training, believe it or not has kept me healthy and fit - and I think that’s helped me.” Fight for Life organiser Dean Lonergan said McIvor seemed upbeat about his situation. “I have no idea whether the fact that he had a sore head or a headache and the fact that he fought in Fight for Life ... whether there’s any correlation whatsoever and I don’t know if anyone can tell me either way if that’s the case or not.” - APNZ

Families are being urged not to spread whooping cough at Christmas gatherings as Auckland’s epidemic of the disease continues into the holiday season. Auckland medical officer of health Dr Michael Hale said Christmas was a time where extended families often got together to celebrate. “This increases the risk of infectious diseases spreading faster and more widely. Eighty per cent of children with whooping cough catch it from a member of their household or extended family.” - APNZ

Man disrupts traffic A man who was sitting on a gantry above a stretch of Auckland motorway has been arrested by police. A section of State Highway 1 at St Mary’s Bay on the fringe of the CBD was closed as negotiators attempted to talk the man down. He had hoisted himself onto the structure around 10.30am. The incident caused major traffic delays across the central city, after all lanes on the southern motorway were closed for a brief period. “Police closed off the motorway briefly before they went up on to the gantry and apprehended the male,” said Sergeant Sam Wood. - APNZ

Barbecue interrupted A construction workers’ Christmas mussel barbecue, perched on scaffolding one storey high in central Wellington, was interrupted when a concerned member of the public called the fire service. Flames and smoke were seen coming from the barbecue, prompting three appliances to arrive at the site at the Vodafone building on Waring Taylor Street about 11.30am. Station officer Mark Julien said the workers were cooking Christmas lunch. - APNZ

■ POLICE ALCOHOL BLITZ

Operation Unite again this weekend By Erin TaskEr

erin.t@theguardian.co.nz

Police were out in force in Mid Canterbury again last night with a focus on alcohol-fuelled crime. Extra staff were specially rostered on for the night as the second weekend of Operation Unite – a trans-Tasman blitz on alcohol related crime – got under way.

Ashburton Police senior sergeant Grant Russell said Operation Unite had been in place for a number of years now and saw police in Australia and New Zealand focus their attention on all things alcohol over weekends leading up to Christmas. That involved drink driving blitzes and checks at local hotels, looking for things like breaches of the Sale of Liquor

Act. “We’re looking for intoxicated people, and we’re looking for under-agers and any breaches. “We’re trying to be more proactive in our policing,” Mr Russell said. The first weekend of Operation Unite in Mid Canterbury coincided with the annual Christmas Community Alcohol Action Project drink driving blitz last Friday night, and 642

vehicles were stopped but no drink drivers were found. Mr Russell said that was a great result and police were hoping for much the same this weekend. People are urged to plan ahead and ensure they’ve got a safe ride home from any preChristmas festivities. Mid Canterbury pubs and clubs also had a “pretty good” record when it came to the Op-

eration Unite blitzes, Mr Russell said. “We have got good, responsible licensees who take a pretty hard stand in their own premises which I’m happy with, but you still get the odd breach.” The brief for Operation Unite is to reduce alcohol harm on the roads, around bars and in public places, and last weekend there were 330 arrests in New Zealand.

Tamihere threatens action against MediaWorks Controversial talk-show host John Tamihere is threatening legal action against broadcaster MediaWorks over his departure from RadioLive. The former Labour MP and radio host was stood down from his afternoon talk show with co-presenter Willie Jackson last month amid mounting public pressure over their take

on the RoastBusters scandal. The pair were particularly criticised for their line of questioning with teenager Amy, who phoned the show saying she was a friend of a victim of the RoastBusters. After companies pulled their advertising from the show, MediaWorks announced a decision to take them off the air for the

remainder of the year. This week it was announced that Jackson will be back in 2014 with a show co-hosted by former Seven Sharp presenter Ali Mau, while Tamihere will not return. He has since told Radio Waatea - of which he sits as a director along with Jackson that he would be taking legal

action against his former employer. A spokeswoman for MediaWorks said she could not comment on the proposed legal action. She said Tamihere’s contract with the broadcaster was due to finish at the end of this year, and he was not returning to RadioLive. - APNZ

Children’s Commissioner Dr Russell Wills wants motorists, the well-off and the elderly to take less from taxpayers so that more public funding can go into tackling child poverty. Dr Wills raised the stakes in his personal crusade for poor children, saying child poverty should be a key issue in next year’s election. He has used charitable funding from the J.R. McKenzie Trust to poll 750 people, finding that voters now put child poverty ahead of unemployment as a “very important” issue facing the country - 63 per cent rated child poverty as very important, compared with 61 per cent who felt the same about the cost of living and only 52 per cent for unemployment. He is also appealing to groups representing motorists and the elderly, and health bosses, to support diverting public funding into measures that would help poor children, such as lifting family tax credits for preschoolers, more social housing, and extending free doctors’ visits to all children under 18. His call drew a predictably cool response. Grey Power president Roy Reid said his members would be prepared to pay “a small increase in tax” to provide more for poor children if necessary, but the costs should be shared across all taxpayers. Property Investors Federation executive officer Andrew King said landlords would support compulsory insulation for rental housing, but not a full “warrant of fitness” scheme requiring a costly inspectorate. Social Development Minister Paula Bennett said it was “absolutely appropriate” for the Children’s Commissioner to advocate for children. Labour children’s spokeswoman, Jacinda Ardern, said the party would prioritise tackling child poverty. - APNZ

■ APOLLO THEATRE COLLAPSE

Kiwi tells of theatre collapse horror By Lydia anderson A young Auckland woman has told how she and her friends fled London’s Apollo Theatre when the roof collapsed yesterday. Scores of people were injured, seven seriously, when masonry fell some five storeys onto the heads of a sellout 720-strong crowd watching The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. Aucklander Amy Woollams, who was in the crowd with boyfriend Scott MacKenzie and their friend Claire Sussmillch, said she was feeling anxious and unable to sleep after their ordeal. They were sitting on the top of three balconies inside the 112-year-old theatre when they noticed people in the audience moving unexpectedly. “We were just sitting there watching and then I noticed

Cold case arrest The brother of a New Zealand woman who disappeared in Australia more than 30 years ago is not confident police will revisit her case, despite yesterday’s arrest of a man for murdering another woman linked to his sister. New Zealanders Linda Davie and Marion Sanford and Australian Mary Louise Wallace all went missing from the same part of Sydney in the early 1980s. Their bodies have never been found but police have acknowledged similarities between the incidents. Yesterday, 61-year-old Robert Adams was charged with Ms Wallace’s murder and remanded in custody until February. The 33-year-old nurse disappeared from Sydney’s north shore in the early hours of September 24, 1983. She had dinner and drinks with nursing colleagues before leaving with a man who offered her a lift home. Police from the Unsolved Homicide Team said they had “comprehensive” evidence against Adams. Detective Chief Inspector John Lehmann said he was known to police and had been the subject of intensive investigation. Ms Davie’s brother Nigel said it was “potentially” good news, but police had told him they were not confident the cases were linked. However, he said police would probably work on the cases if new evidence came up. - APNZ

down the front row of our tier some people in the middle started moving out towards the sides,” Ms Woollams said. “I got annoyed and thought ‘what are they doing’, that’s so rude.” The people who were moving were likely to have been among those who heard strange noises coming from the roof. “Maybe 10 minutes into the performance we heard a tap-tap noise, we thought it was rain,” 18-year-old Desmond Thomas told AFP. “There was a crack and then it suddenly seemed to get bigger and suddenly it collapsed. The next thing we knew the whole theatre filled with dust and smoke.” Ms Woollams, 26, told APNZ the theatre was silent in the seconds before the collapse. “A girl yelled out ‘get out’ and all of a sudden a huge chunk of

the roof dislodged and there was smoke all around it. “I thought it was part of the show at first - I think most people did. “As soon as everything fell people started screaming.” She grabbed her bag and with her friends sprinted to the nearby doors. They ran across the road and stood for about 15 minutes watching theatregoers emerge from the chaos. “Everybody was standing outside hugging. A few people were crying - a lot of people looked kind of glazed over and they just seemed to be in shock and that’s how we felt as well. “People were coming out covered in dust. At that stage we decided we didn’t want to see anything more so we left but I know people were coming out with blood all over them.” Hundreds of emergency

workers rushed to the scene and freed those trapped inside. Paramedics initially said 88 people were wounded but later revised the number downwards to 76. Seven were seriously injured, another 51 “walking wounded” were taken to hospital with minor injuries and the rest were treated at the scene. Several people were stretchered out of the theatre, while others with bandages on their heads were being treated in triage centres set up in the lobbies of the nearby Gielgud and Queen’s theatres. Simon Usborne, a journalist for The Independent newspaper who was watching the show, said there was “chaos”. “Loud bangs, cracks. Thought was part of show then whole interior of theatre filled with curtain of dark grey dust and debris, falling on heads of any-

one not sheltered,” he tweeted afterwards. Prime Minister David Cameron said he was being kept updated on the incident and was “grateful for the fast work of the emergency services in helping the injured”. Police said they were investigating the cause of the incident alongside structural engineers from the local council. The current owner of the Apollo, Nimax Theatres, said the collapse was a “shocking and upsetting incident”. When the Herald talked to Ms Woollams about 1am London time, she and her boyfriend were still in a state of shock and could not get to sleep. “We keep saying we hope that no one dies. We’re just checking the news. We were lucky with where we were sitting, we saw it all but we weren’t really in any danger.” - APNZ

Home invasion charges admitted One of two South Otago men has admitted several charges from a home invasion at Kaka Point earlier this month. Zane Tiatoa Currie, 19, was remanded in custody to March 14 after pleading guilty to a joint charge of unlawfully entering a house at the Espla-

nade, Kaka Point, on December 8. Currie also admitted trying to avoid arrest by intentionally injuring Barry Hessan and assaulting Ronald Gabolinscy with intent to injure him. He was also charged with stealing $165.96 of alcohol

from Rosebank Super Liquor in Balclutha. But he denied that he, along with Daniel Tipene Te Moananui, intentionally caused grievous bodily harm to Pamela Paterson at Kaka Point. He elected a jury trial on that charge.

Currie, who was before Judge Dominic Flatley in the Dunedin District Court yesterday also admitted an unrelated charge of disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence at Balclutha on December 1. On that he was sentenced to one month’s jail. - APNZ

■ NEW LIQUOR LAWS

In brief

After ball party unaffected BY MYLES HUME

MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

College students attending the traditional after ball party will have nothing to worry about as stricter alcohol laws are now in force. The college ball is the major highlight on the Mid Canterbury teenage social calendar, capped off by a late-night after party where teens can bring

along alcohol to drink, as long as they have parent permission. The new Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 will mean adults can be fined up to $2000 if they supply under 18-yearolds alcohol when they are not their parents or legal guardians. Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drugs Service (ACADS) manager Chris Clark

said teenagers who wanted to attend the college after parties already had to supply signed permission slips from parents to attend the function and take alcohol to drink. The limit is set at six drinks containing no more than five per cent alcohol. “Is there going to be change? Not really because we have already been working towards these things that are now in

place as law,” Mrs Clark said. She said up to 30 parents, 10 ACADS staff and security supervised the event, all keeping a watchful eye out for those who may be showing signs of intoxication. “We do have the ability to stop people from drinking, we give them a warning to stop drinking or we can ring their parents to come pick them up,” she said.

A supersonic rocket developed by Canterbury University students is expected to break a New Zealand speed record this weekend. The rocket, which is 41mm in diameter and about 5.5m long, was developed by the university’s rocketry research group. Project leader Dr Chris Hann, a senior lecturer at the university’s electrical and computer engineering department, said the rocket is expected to reach an altitude of 2.6km with maximum speed of 1425km/h, in less than two seconds. Dr Hann said successful recovery of the data would ensure the rocket would break the New Zealand altitude record by a large margin, for its specific class of motor. - APNZ

Community, businesses get behind lunch Ashburton District Christmas Community Lunch organiser Trevor Hurley (left) is busy picking up items around town for lunch next week including from New World owner/operator Tony Sheppard. He was in New World collecting donated items such as fruit mince pies, chocolate santas, Tim Tams biscuits and peanut slabs. Community response for the community lunch had been so overwhelming, Mr Hurley said he did not need any more volunteers. More than 60 people had offered to help and around 150 had registered for lunch. “We have had such a great response, I’ve had to stop taking volunteers. I just don’t have enough work for them to do.” Christmas Day lunch revellers can expect a wonderful assortment of meat, potatoes and vegetables with all the traditional trimmings.

An unlicensed electrical worker whose shoddy work gave an electrician an electric shock was convicted of 16 charges and fined $16,500 in Manukau District Court. On Monday the Mt Wellington man pleaded guilty to all 16 charges under the Electricity Act, following a prosecution brought by the Electrical Workers Registration Board. The first charge related to performing prescribed electrical work, including the installation of light and socket fittings and installing earth electrodes at a home in Auckland. The remaining 15 charges related to work he carried out at 15 other homes at an Auckland subdivision over more than two years. - APNZ

Assault charge

PHOTO DONNA WYLIE 201213-DW-024

A bikini-clad young woman has been charged with assault after an apparent road rage video was posted on the internet. The footage, filmed from inside a vehicle, shows a blonde woman wielding a screwdriver, yelling at two people and asking if the woman driver knows how to drive. “Do you even have a licence?” she asks, before demanding to see it. She then appears to hit the woman in her face. After the footage was posted on Facebook, a 19-year-old woman came forward to police, Senior Sergeant Carolyn McKenzie said. Police said the victim of the alleged assault was yet to come forward to report the incident. - APNZ

■ BLACK WIDOW CASE

‘She got what she deserved’ By Kurt BAyer

Black Widow murderer Helen Milner’s first husband has broken his silence on their marriage - and revealed how she almost destroyed his relationship with their children. Mark Robert Kearns and his second wife Dawn said Helen Milner was motivated by money and fuelled by lies. Speaking at his Christchurch home, Mr Kearns described a manipulative woman who said what she needed to to get what she wanted. “She got what she deserves,” said Mr Kearns, after a jury found Milner guilty of murdering second husband Phil Nisbet in 2009. Mr Kearns and Milner split 20 years ago after seven years of marriage. He said Milner lied in the Family Court to gain custody

of their two sons - then told them he’d moved to Australia and didn’t want anything to do with them, “It was bullshit. I did my absolute best for the boys and had no-show. It was not just the lies to me ... No matter what I spent with lawyers - 20-odd grand for a children’s lawyer - she managed to put a stop to all that.” The truckie couldn’t bring himself to attend her trial. He followed it through the media and kept a watchful eye on the emotions of his sons, who both gave key evidence against their mother. “I had a gut feeling all the way throughout that she was guilty,” said Mr Kearns. “I said that to anyone that asked me - she’s done it.” Dawn Kearns said her relationship with her husband was lucky to survive Milner’s efforts to break them up.

“She tried all sorts of tactics too. Not trying to kill him, but she wanted to get rid of him, get him out of the house. “It was money right through with her. It’s always been money. “Like the time she took her car to the [Waimakariri Rriver] burnt it out and claimed insurance. She did that too - got full insurance on the car.” The Crown argued Milner poisoned Mr Nisbet then faked his death to look like suicide, motivated by a $250,000 life insurance payout. Her murder conviction means she’s ineligible for the life insurance payout, which was put on hold after insurers AXA were told of the homicide investigation into Mr Nisbet’s death by his sister Lee-Ann Cartier. “We are in the process of determining the legal recipients of the proceeds of the insur-

ance policy,” a spokeswoman for AMP, which merged with AXA in 2011, she said. Financial Services Council chief executive Peter Neilson said such cases are rare. “If you purposefully burn your own house down after taking out a fire insurance policy then you cannot be a beneficiary of your own actions regarding an insurance claim,” he said. “But on the other hand, that doesn’t mean to say anybody’s else should be tainted by that illegality. “So it may be someone else may have some eligibility based on the circumstances on the person has died.” Milner was found guilty of one charge of murder and one of attempted murder. She was found not guilty of a second charge of attempted murder. She will be sentenced in February. - APNZ

■ SPECIAL DONATION

Rebuilding fund receives a welcome boost St Vincent de Paul Ashburton made another small step towards replacing its earthquake-damaged building yesterday. The St Joseph’s School Vinnies Group co-ordinator Nina Kickhefer handed over a cheque worth $830 to the organisation’s treasurer Arnold Rushton towards the $700,000 needed to rebuild its headquarters in the Ashburton Triangle. The school raised the money through toy sales, sausage sizzles, mufti days and a movie event. Mr Rushton said St Vincent de Paul had $500,000 available for the rebuild and would need another $200,000 to meet its target. Photo Myles huMe 181213-Mh-016

Loburn man killed retrieving his skateboard A man struck and killed by a truck while trying to retrieve his skateboard in rural Canterbury on Thursday has been identified as 20-year-old Jamie Richard Haggath. Sergeant Colin Stewart said

Mr Haggath was from Loburn, and was travelling east on a tarsealed section of Carrs Rd in Loburn, north of Rangiora when the incident occurred at about 5.25pm. “We believe he was travel-

ling in the same direction as the truck which hit him.” The driver had been interviewed with police and was “distraught” after the accident, Mr Stewart said. While the investigation was

still in its early stages, Mr Stewart said it appeared Mr Haggath may have lost control of the skateboard and stepped into the path of the truck in order to retrieve it. He died at the scene. - APNZ

David Cunliffe

Tweet earns a written warning for Cunliffe By Audrey young Labour Leader David Cunliffe says he has been given a written police warning about a tweet he posted on the day of the Christchurch East byelection urging people to vote for Labour candidate Poto Williams. Mr Cunliffe says he has taken the warning on board and will not repeat the error. The tweet said: “If you are resident in Christchurch East don’t forget to vote today - for Labour and Poto Williams.” At the time he had about 6400 followers on Twitter. The tweet was referred to the police by the Electoral Commission - electioneering is banned on election day. The Electoral Commission said it believed the post constituted a breach of section 197 (1)(g)(i) of the Electoral Act because it was a statement published on polling day “advising, or intended, or likely to influence electors as to the candidate for whom they should or should not vote in the byelection”. “It was an inadvertent mistake which I regret,” Mr Cunliffe said. “I took steps to rectify the error by immediately deleting the tweet and Labour also notified the Returning Officer as soon as possible.” He said he would like to acknowledge his mistake by doing something to help the people of Christchurch. “I intend to make a $1000 donation to the Stepping Stone Foundation which provides counselling services to earthquake-affected children.” Graham McCready, the retired accountant who initiated the private prosecution against Act leader John Banks over 2010 donations to his Auckland mayoral bid, earlier vowed to take a private prosecution against Mr Cunliffe over the tweet if the police did not prosecute. He could not be reached for comment. - APNZ

■ LICENCE LOOPHOLE

■ HASTINGS

Learners drive solo to sit test Statutory By Lydia anderson

Teen learner drivers are blatantly breaking the law by driving themselves unsupervised to restricted licence tests, with testing officers powerless to give them an automatic fail. Frustated driving instructors around the country reported teenagers flagrantly breaching their licence conditions, right under the nose of their testing officer. Tauranga driving instructor Kevin Brooks said he often observed learner drivers travelling unsupervised to their restricted tests. “I’m often standing around the [Automobile Association] waiting for my students ... and

I often see learner drivers drive up, put up their L plates and wait for the tester to do the test. “Even if the tester sees them, he can’t do anything about it - he has to take them for their test. “It’s crazy, they can’t send them away because they’ve seen them driving illegally. “If you spent two hours around the AA any day of the week you’d see at least one instance of it.” Mr Brooks said he brought up the problem at a recent New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) meeting. “Even though they were sympathetic to the testers there’s really nothing they can

do about it because they’re not policemen. “At the other end of the test you see that [the student has] failed and they rip down their L plates and wheelie off out of the place.” Fellow instructor Jack Kennedy, in Wanganui, said he was also aware of the problem. “It’s not a good look. We’re not police so we can’t police it.” The news follows the release of a NZTA survey of 574 parents, which found nearly half of teen drivers on learner or restricted licences have broken at least one graduated licensing condition. AA Driving School general manager Nigel Clark said the AA had heard of the problem,

and testing officers should have the power to automatically fail a learner driver before a test for such a breach. NZTA spokesman Andy Knackstedt said learner drivers must not drive on their own but while testing officers would be rightly concerned and frustrated at the problem, their responsibilities were limited to assessing the driver during the test itself. The restricted licence test ‘pre-drive’ check did not extend to checking for offences or licence breaches, he said. “Any attempt to expand the scope of pre-drive checks to cover such suspicions would be extremely difficult to enforce in practice.” - APNZ

Gender pay equality battle could be costly By Matthew Backhouse A legal battle over gender pay equality could cost the aged care industry up to $160 million if the unions representing caregivers are successful, the industry body says. The country’s major rest home chains are facing proceedings under the Equal Pay

Act after the Service and Food Workers Union and the NZ Nurses Organisation filed hundreds of applications with the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) yesterday. The move comes after a landmark Employment Court ruling paving the way for gender pay equality. In August, the court ruled in

favour of Lower Hutt caregiver Kristine Bartlett, who argued the $14.32 an hour she was paid by Terranova Homes was a result of gender discrimination under the Equal Pay Act. Terranova is appealing against the decision, with the case due to be heard in the Court of Appeal in February. NZ Nurses Organisation

aged care industrial adviser David Wait said some 400 applications to the ERA had been filed on behalf of caregivers at homes around the country. However, the unions had asked the ERA to wait for the outcome of the Terranova appeal before hearing the new cases. - APNZ

manager appointed to school The Ministry of Education has assumed control of a Hastings school. Heretaunga Intermediate School principal David Lunny has resigned, while a limited statutory manager has assumed the powers of the school’s board. Mr Lunny had no comment when approached yesterday. Ministry of Education head of sector enablement and support Katrina Casey said Mr Lunny had resigned, effective December 13, and Rachel Smith was acting principal. The board of trustees was still in place. “A limited statutory manager was appointed to the board on October 1, and has assumed the powers of the board in relation to employment matters, curriculum management (including teaching and assessment practice), and has initiated a schoolwide self-review. “The ministry does not intervene lightly in the running of a school. “The effective management and functioning of a school is our principal concern. “Three reasons the ministry may intervene in a school are a risk to the operation of the school, a risk to student achievement, or a risk to student welfare and safety.” While a commissioner would replace a board of trustees, a limited statutory manager might take on some but not all of a board’s roles and responsibilities and the board remained in place. “We actively work to ensure that a school is returned to full self-governance within two years.” The school made headlines this year after a teacher with a conviction for aggravated robbery was sentenced for stealing sunglasses. Amanda Jane Scott pleaded guilty in the Hastings District Court in July to a charge of stealing the $400 pair of sunglasses at Mitre 10. Scott is understood to have been the getaway driver for a bank robbery in 1991 and, at the age of 22, was jailed in Christchurch Prison for three years. She has since resigned. - APNZ

L

ast-minute Christmas shopping in crammed malls being blasted by carol soundtracks might be enough to put most people off the festive season, but in Ashburton at least people are opting for face-to-face shopping rather than online. It’s not yet quite a toss up between bricks and mortar shopping around the Ashburton District, but retailers know they need to make service their point of difference to keep customers coming through the doors rather than through their online

portal. A new report suggests Ashburton’s experience is similar to the rest of the country when it comes to Kiwi Christmas shopping habits. A MasterCard survey shows that about 80 per cent of Kiwis plan to shop physically this year with just 16 per cent planning to shop online. It seems that while around 55 per cent shop online at least once a month, when it comes to Christmas we can’t resist the pull of the handson shopping experience, treading the pavement and selecting gifts in person.

What influences our buying habits?

P

ricing and quality are our two biggest concerns, with 85 per cent of survey respondents being influenced by finding the best bargain and 83 per cent concerned about quality. Convenience is also important to shoppers, and the ability for recourse with local retailers in case of problems. Customer service is lower on the list, important to 62 per cent of Kiwis, followed by familiarity and trust with the brand. Mr Albertson says staff training on product knowledge is crucial for stores, because often customers have done extensive research online before stepping into a store, and could know more than the person serving them.

www.guardianonline.co.nz

MasterCard New Zealand country manager Peter Chisnall said that while most try to plan ahead, the convenience of the last-minute dash to the local shops is still the most favoured form of present buying. “Although it’s common-place to hear Kiwis bemoan the hustle and bustle of the shops at Christmas, for most of us the desire to actually see and examine the goods we are buying prior to purchase will trump the convenience of shopping from home.’’ New Zealand Retailers’ Associa-

tion chief executive John Albertson says many major retail chains operate online and in physical stores. “It’s not an either or, nor is it one versus the other, it’s all about what the consumer wants. “You might be quite happy buying one product online but you might be equally happy buying another product in the face-to-face environment.’’ Online shopping offers 24/7 buying power and is great for researching products, but an instore experience is more memorable and offers instant gratification, he says.

What’s under the tree?

A

ccording to the survey, we are most likely to visit local stores for Christmas gifts such as food and wine (77 per cent), clothing and accessories (65 per cent), and toys and sporting equipment (64 per cent). Of those heading online to shop, 10 per cent will be trawling local websites for their Christmas purchases, with a further 6 per cent taking advantage of the strong New Zealand dollar to shop on international sites. Vouchers for services (47 per cent) books, DVDs, and CDs (28 per cent), and technology and electronic goods (22 per cent), are anticipated to be the gifts most likely sourced from local online retailers. When it comes to international online retailers, make-up, jewellery and watches and sportswear are the Christmas gifts Kiwis are most likely to buy - although males are also much more likely to seek out technology and electronic goods from international websites than their female counterparts (16 per cent compared to 6 per cent).

Some tips for Christmas shoppers

M

r Chisnall reminds shoppers who are going online this Christmas to be vigilant with personal information and only purchase from reputable websites. Customers should remember to check payment details, the returns policy and data protection cover before paying. The MasterCard-commissioned omnibus study was conducted online amongst 1012 New Zealanders aged 18-64.

All we want for Christmas is ... C

hristmas is just four days away, so the Guardian’s Erin Tasker visited two local preschools – Rising Stars and Jigsaw – to

find out what’s topping kids’ present wishlists this year. Just like children around the world, Mid Canterbury children have been whis-

pering secrets into Santa’s ears over the past couple of weeks, to make sure he knows exactly what they want him to bring down the

chimney this year. According to local children spoken to by the Guardian, there’s no one must-have item everyone wants this

year. But as they are every year, all things pink and purple are popular with girls, as are cars and motorbikes with the boys.

Getting through the school As thousands of Mid Canterbury youngsters embark on their six-week summer holiday, many parents are left wondering what to do. Whether it be work commitments or deciding how to entertain them it can be a stressful time. MYLES HUME finds out how parents can get through the summer.

F

or Ashburton mother Nicci Glanville, entertaining the children over the summer months can sometimes feel like a job in itself. This week Mrs Glanville’s six children embark on their six-week summer break in what they anticipate will be actionpacked, full of activities and small get-away holidays. But all that hype relies heav-

ily on Mrs Glanville whose offspring range from four to 15, making it hard to please all of them. Husband Andy works as a lineman during the day, while Mrs Glanville works in the evenings as a gardener. Working after hours takes the pressure off having to find-day-to-day care with family friends, or pay for holiday programmes and babysitters. “I definitely find it harder

with the older kids who expect a lot more than the younger ones. With the older ones they aren’t just happy with a visit to the park and feeding the ducks, and you often have to spend a bit more money on them,” she said. That can also include taking them to the pool, the movies, on trips to other parts of Canterbury or even dropping them off to play with friends. “But I do like the slower pace, not having to have everyone out

the door by 8.30am. It’s just a shame it is such a long period of time and my husband can’t take all that time off work, and I guess that’s the case for most families. Arts and crafts, tenpin bowling in Christchurch and short camping trips to parts of the South Island are also some of her usual tools to entertain the children. For the first time the family will be going away later this

week, heading to Kaikora for five days. Mrs Glanville has used the Oscar programme but that became expensive and she now sends a few of her children to the St David’s Union Church in Allenton where they can catch up with friends. Although that tends to work well, Mrs Glanville said she wished there was more for older children to do during the long break in Ashburton.

Some expert tips P

… or get them to research the bus timetable and travel independently. Some kids have very little idea what there parents actually do. You could just rendezvous with them for lunch or, better still, get them doing some tasks

– cleaning or filing or tending the gardens.

Buy or rent a water blaster

As a big kid myself, I know that water blasters are one of the coolest power tools: it will keep kids entertained for literally hours, if not days – and you might get some much needed outside work done.

Go through drawers

It’s a great time to have a major archaeological dig through the dark back corners of wardrobes and drawers. Start by pulling it all out into a pile, and then let them go to work sorting the stuff they want to keep and the stuff to be bagged up for the Sallies.

Bake

Baking is a great skill and can be fantastic fun. You can eat the successes, and at least the dog will enjoy the failures. Wind up your patience and mess-tolerance, and invite your kids to create a masterpiece.

Camps

There are many excellent short camps all around New Zealand every school holidays. They provide fantastic holidays, usually with stimulating programmes and good adult supervision. They usually hook into the teen need for fast pace, lots of music, and adrenaline rushes along with relaxation.

Holiday programmes By Myles HuMe

Left – The Glanville family (from left) Tommy, 13, Danny, 9, Archie, 8, Jamie, 6, mother Nicci, and Finleigh, 4, minus husband Andy and 15-year-old son Greg, have embarked on what will be a busy six-week summer break. Above – The Glanville household is always a busy one. Below – Picking strawberries is one of many activities Ashburton grandparent Francoise Belpadrome (left) does with her grandson Hurley, 7, while his mother continues to work during the school holidays in New Caledonia.

he sheer number of school holiday programmes in Mid Canterbury and their ballooning rolls shows how vital they are to working Mid Canterbury parents. School holiday programme coordinators have spoken of recordbreaking rolls and extensions to the number of weeks they operate to cater for the local demand. “Work just doesn’t stop and it is hard to take six weeks off, I guess school isn’t geared for us as parents,” Hit Play coordinator La Tisha Richards says. While most holiday programmes start in the new year on January 6, leaving parents to fill the gap until then, the Ashburton Borough Oscar programme held a December week-long course for the first time. It ended yesterday. That is coupled with an almost full 30-strong roster right through January, while the new Allenton programme Hit Play will look to care for a record roll close to 50 and positions for SKIDS in Hampstead are steadily filling up. All have their own unique variety

of activities for the kids. Some are arts-based, other sports-focused, while others make use of the facilities around town. Mrs Richards says it is vital the programmes operate realistic hours for parents, so she finds 8am to 6pm caters well for their needs. “We have got 1 per cent unemployment here in Mid Canterbury so that results in a lot of mums and dads working fulltime,” she said. Grandparents, extended family or family friends serve as other alternatives for many working Mid Canterbury parents, some who shy away from the costs of sending their children to a holiday programme. But Mrs Richards says this is a common fear conquered by subsidies available from Work and Income for Oscar programmes. “It is income tested but the thresholds are quite good ... we tell our parents just apply because you never know, you could be eligible for some.” Costly or not, parents see local programmes as an incredibly valuable asset.

Grandparents step up to help young families By Myles HuMe

shburton grandparent Francoise Belpadrome has come to the rescue over the summer months. She, like so many other Mid Canterbury grandparents, has taken her sevenyear-old grandson Hurley into her care while his mother Audrey grafts away in her accountancy job at home. However, Mrs Belpadrome’s position is a touch more consuming than the average grandparent. While many local grandparents take their children in during the day, Hurley is set to stay with his New Caledonian-cum-Kiwi grandmother and grandfather Alain for six weeks before he returns to his New Caledonian home. “In New Caledonia the school holidays are just too expensive for parents, they can’t take almost two months off and my daughter can’t pay for someone

photo tetsuro mitomo 191213-tm-009

to look after Hurley or pay to send him on camps,” she said. The arrangement is the perfect scenario for the family. Hurley’s mother can continue to work, while Mrs Belpadrome and her husband can spend quality time with their grandson. It’s never an issue, with Mrs Belpadrome working part time up to 15 hours a week in her office job, and her husband not working, care is never short for their grandson. Meanwhile, Hurley doesn’t mind the plane ride, and spending time in an English-speaking country is an exciting experience. “It’s the second time he has come to stay with us in Ashburton and he loves it. “Last year he followed Alain on his bike delivering circulars, we took him to Tinwald Pool, to the domain, and at home we play games and he helps with cooking. “We have great fun.”

In brief Ferns’ 2014 schedule Rotorua and Palmerston North will host the Silver Ferns next October during a two-test series against England for the Taini Jamison Trophy. Netball New Zealand confirmed next year’s schedule for the Silver Ferns, which is highlighted by the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July. The ever-improving English will travel to New Zealand to play two tests with Rotorua playing host on Tuesday, October 28 before the series moves to Arena Manawatu in Palmerston North three days later. The four-test Constellation Cup between the Silver Ferns and Australian Diamonds will take place in the first half of October with two tests being held in each country. New Zealand will host the first and fourth encounters in Invercargill and Auckland respectively, while Australia will stage the middle two. The Ferns begin their year with a tour to England and Scotland in January before the ANZ Championship takes over. - APNZ

Manly in the clear Having been cleared of any wrongdoing by the NRL in relation to drugs in sport scandal, Manly say their overwhelming feeling isn’t vindication - but rather sorrow for the sad state of affairs gripping Cronulla. The head of the Sea Eagles’ supplement program, strength and conditioning coach Don Singe, said it was obvious that a club’s first priority was to look after its players. The NRL’s confirmation on Tuesday that the Sharks are the only club in their sights, has allowed Singe and the rest of Manly’s staff to get on with business. - AAP

Sevens star in Syd-Hob Sailing in the Sydney to Hobart and around the world is proving to be the perfect fit and an incredible adventure for injured but fiercely competitive England Sevens rugby star Ollie Phillips. The 2009 World Sevens Player of the Year, Phillips has been laid low by a calf injury. With no running allowed during his rehab, 30-year-old Phillips turned to sailing to satisfy his desire for competition. He is sailing aboard GREAT Britain in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, the next leg of which is Australia’s iconic Sydney to Hobart. “I cleared it with all the physios and they said it’s not going to be detrimental (and they told me to) go for it,” Phillips said. - AAP

Finals spots on the line More than a dozen teams plunge into the penultimate week of NFL action this weekend seeking to cement their playoff status. Denver, led by Peyton Manning, can clinch the AFC West title and a first-round bye with a victory at Houston. The Broncos are tied atop the division with the playoffbound Kansas City Chiefs, meaning they must bounce back from a surprising loss to San Diego last week. “We got whipped in a lot of areas,” Manning said. “I would hope that we respond to that loss with a better performance this week.” Three other teams that finished last or tied for last in their divisions last season are currently tied for first - Philadelphia in the NFC East and New Orleans and Carolina in the NFC South. - AFP

■ RUGBY

Intriguing deal for SBW BY WYNNE GRAY Sonny Bill Williams’ decision to return to rugby is intriguing. His two-year deal with the Chiefs from 2015 gives that franchise a strong start for their recruiting and a better grasp on their plans rather than the single season deals SBW’s manager insisted on. Williams is a talented athlete who was starting to develop as an All Black after three seasons of Super rugby and 19 tests including his selection for the World Cup squad. His return at the start of the next World Cup year is the start of his push towards selection in that group, with an eye on sevens selection the following year at the 2016 Olympics. Quite how he will fit that in around his Super rugby commitments remains a little fuzzy. His deferred return to rugby gives others their chance to develop further and make more progress in their international careers. Ma’a Nonu will not want to share national duties at second five-eighths or shift out a place as he had to on occasions when SBW first appeared. Nonu has 88 caps and is one rock in the All Black backline the selectors do not want to disturb. Francis Saili, Tom Taylor and Ryan Crotty get all this year to work on their skills and match management while SBW is playing league across the ditch. He will return to the Chiefs with a much better rugby knowledge and intuition than he had when he turned up in 2010. He has all the skills to switch into

his new code quickly but some of the nuances will be a touch fuzzy. Team patterns and styles will have altered, but unless something happens, he will have the advantage of playing outside Aaron Cruden at the Chiefs and that should offer a fast-track remedial course. Williams will need to be on the money and off the injury list to convince the All Black selectors he is ready to emulate Brad Thorn, who bounced back and forth across the Tasman between codes. Thorn played 12 tests in his first rugby stint, had a threeyear spell away from the game and then added another 47 tests and a World Cup winner’s medal alongside Williams in 2011. He was a dedicated professional who coped with the code changes especially second time around. Williams gives every impression that he is equally committed to whatever craft he pursues. He will be 28 when he returns and should be in his prime during a Super rugby audition for the All Blacks’ brief four test schedule before their tilt at the 2015 World Cup. - NZH

■ YACHTING

Forecast favours Wild Oats BY ADRIAN WARREN Six-time line honours winner Wild Oats XI appears to be favoured by the latest weather forecast for this year’s Sydney to Hobart yacht race. The bigger boats will take the most joy from the forecast issued yesterday by the NSW Bureau of Meteorology’s Andrew Treloar. He said the race could start under 10 to 15 knot nor-easters on Boxing Day, with the winds freshening as the fleet makes it way down the NSW south coast. He expected the north to north easterly winds winds to get up to around 25 to 30 knots on Friday, before the first significant change later that night, with the wind expected to move around to

the west early on December 28. It looks like the course right now may suit Wild Oats a little bit better than it does us,” said Perpetual LOYAL navigator Stan Honey. ‘We’re looking for conditions that are more demanding of stability which is what we have lots of.” Wild Oats XI counterpart Tom Addis said it was an encouraging forecast for the big boats. “Practice will always beat theory, the forecast in reality might be different on the day,” Addis said. “But if the current forecast stays, it probably does suit us more than LOYAL, which is a higher stability boat than us.” - AAP

Hotpot gets the punters home

Break for star’s sibling Habibi’s little half-sister has been given Christmas off after making pleasing progress through her first preparation. The two-year-old daughter of Thewayyouare has been to the trials twice this month and finished third in the latest of them over 800 metres at Te Aroha. “She’s trialled up really nicely and she’s in the paddock now,” cotrainer Donna Logan said. “She’s not a ready-made two-year-old and I know the family well enough to say that. Hopefully, a bit later on she’ll head in the same direction as her half-sister.” Habibi trialled as a juvenile before making a winning debut at three in the spring and then moved smoothly through to success in the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby before her subsequent sale to America. - APNZ

Arietta showed her class to take out the RD Petroleum Open Handicap at the Ashburton Christmas at the Races gallops meet yesterday. Jockey Chris Johnson kept Arietta poised in good position

heading into the home straight, and unleashed the mare’s speed to sprint away to score the victory by three-and-a-quarter lengths. It made it four wins in the last five starts for the up and comer which improved its career ratio to seven wins from 21 starts.

Dr Dee Bee had found the front out of the start gate and led as the field of eight closed in on the straight. Georgie’s Girl made the move on the bend to lead the field before Irish Bay pulled into the lead, only for Arietta to blow on by.

Irish Bay was pushed hard by jockey Kylie Williams but had to settle for second, finishing a length in front of Georgie’s Girl while Dr Dee Bee faded back to fourth. Arietta paid $2 for the win, covering the 1400 metres in a time of 1:21.98.

The paths of stablemates Zoustar and the New Zealand-bred Vilanova crossed during the winter carnival in Brisbane, but since then their careers have gone in very different directions. While Zoustar is now a dual Group One winner and valuable stallion prospect, Vilanova is coming off a forgettable spring as he prepares to return for an off-season campaign at Rosehill on Saturday. Trainer Chris Waller hasn’t lost faith in the ability of Vilanova, who began his career in New Zealand with Jason Bridgman. Racing here as Catalonia, he won the Listed Wentwood Grange Stakes and was an unlucky fifth in the Karaka Million. Waller’s quest to help Vilanova find the form he showed during his juvenile season has led to the three-year-old being gelded. - APNZ

Documents recovered Administrators for the insolvent racing syndicate BC3 Thoroughbreds have recovered mailing lists and debt records after searching the Torquay property of its former chairman Bill Vlahos. Earlier this month, Vlahos was allegedly beaten and a car containing crucial documents relating to a punting club was set on fire at a Grace Park property. But administrator Michael Hird said they were able to track down some of the 55 to 60 BC3 creditors from material found in a search of the property. “There were some books, mailing lists and records found at the farm,” Hird said. Creditors include horse auction houses William Inglis & Son, which is owed $5.8 million, and Magic Millions which is owed $1.35 million. - APNZ

Baker eyes big prize Former New Zealand-based trainer Bjorn Baker is likely to be represented in Queensland’s richest race. Baker produced Unencumbered for an impressive win in Thursday’s Wyong Magic Millions Classic and the youngster is now expected to contest the $A2 million Jeep Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast on January 11. “He’s pretty straight forward because he’s just got a fantastic attitude and not many horses have as good an attitude as him,” Baker said. “He’s a nice colt. Every time he’s racing he’s improving and that’s a really good sign.” - APNZ

In brief Latham leads the way In the top-of-the-table Plunket Shield clash at Karori Park in Wellington, a couple of late wickets saw the hosts claw their way back into the contest against Canterbury. Tom Latham seized the initiative after being sent in and scoring 137 to see his side through to 292-5 at stumps. Latham was overlooked for the Black Caps’ one-day squad and he batted like he had a point to prove, sharing significant stands with Henry Nicholls (70) and Shanan Stewart (60). Canterbury progressed to 290-3 and looked in complete control, but two wickets from Andy McKay in the day’s penultimate over gave the home side some hope. - APNZ

Alarm bells ring in Black Caps’ camp

Battle for Auckland Auckland are already facing an uphill battle in search of their first Plunket Shield win of the season after a luckless opening day with the ball. After Gareth Hopkins won the toss at Eden Park Outer Oval and inserted Northern Districts, little else went right as the visitors cruised to 315-2 at stumps. Opener Daniel Flynn did the majority of the damage, carrying his bat to reach stumps unbeaten on 162. Flynn shared a 213-run partnership for the second wicket with Joe Carter, a 21-year-old playing his fourth first-class match. Carter fell for 95 to the bowling of allrounder Colin de Grandhomme. - APNZ

Ryder warming up In Dunedin, Jesse Ryder helped Otago’s bowlers run through Central Districts for 255 to snatch control at University Oval. Ryder, set to open the batting for New Zealand on Boxing Day, showed his all-round abilities when his two early wickets reduced CD to 67-3. Things soon got worse for the Stags as they saw three batsmen depart with the score on 76, eventually managing a respectable total courtesy of Kruger van Wyk’s 91. Otago couldn’t survive a tricky nine overs before stumps, losing Aaron Redmond (5) and Michael Bracewell (4) to close on 30-2. - APNZ

Defence into attack Mike Hussey says an improved defensive technique has set David Warner up to become potentially the most dangerous batsman in world cricket. Warner returns to his bread and butter T20 form for the Sydney Thunder on Saturday, as a player now proficient at dominating the red and white ball. After failing to win a game last Big Bash League season, the Thunder are looking for Warner to do what he does best and smash cross-town rivals the Sixers into submission at the SCG. And there’s no better gun-for-hire than Warner, who will be back in whites again come Boxing Day. - AAP

Integrity unit set up Cricket Australia has followed the lead of the country’s other major sporting codes by establishing its own specialised integrity unit. The integrity unit will be headed by CA’s senior legal counsel, Iain Roy and will also attempt to safeguard cricket from doping offences, illicit substance abuse and other activities that could undermine the image and reputation of the sport. - AAP

BY DAVID LEGGAT It’s only two days in but one team are delighted with the Seddon Park pitch, and one are far from it. No prizes for guessing who’s grinning. The last thing New Zealand wanted as they try to hold on to their series lead in the final test against the West Indies was to discover a pitch playing into the visitors’ hands. Unimpressed? You bet. New Zealand will start today at 156 for three, in pursuit of 367 and the last hour yesterday, in particular, will have sent alarm bells ringing. From marking out his runup, spinner Sunil Narine wheeled down 22 unbroken overs, regularly deceiving the batsmen and finding more turn in the pitch than the West Indies could have dreamt of. Ross Taylor, well set on 56, and Brendon McCullum at times looked to be wearing blindfolds as they reached in vain for the ball as it spat off past the outside edge. And remember, the West Indies will bowl last in this test. “I’ve never really seen it spin like that [in Hamilton],” Kane Williamson, who has played most of his domestic cricket at Seddon Park, said. “But they’re the cards we’ve been dealt and we need to turn up with a change of game plan as a batting unit to face a lot of spin on a wicket that’s very much conducive to spin bowling.” The flip side came from West Indian veteran Shiv Chanderpaul, who hit his 29th test hundred yesterday, an unbeaten 122. Clearly, after the last two test pitches favoured seam bowling, he was surprised at what has been presented to the tourists. “You could say that,” Chanderpaul said with a big smile. “I wish we had wickets as good as this in the Caribbean.” Narine, with help from tidy left arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, who was unlucky not to get at least one wicket, is hard to pick as it is. Give him a pitch with some bounce and turn and he’s a real handful. His test record is average,

just 17 expensive wickets. Short form cricket is his specialty area, where batsmen must attack him. However 14 of those 17 are against New Zealand. “Sunil is a very good bowler, it doesn’t matter the conditions he’s playing in,” Chanderpaul said. “He’s difficult to deal with when he gets it right.” For all that, New Zealand need to be assertive today, rather than try and simply hang on. Williamson’s strategy is to be aware of how Narine’s stock delivery, the offspinner, looks as it leaves his hand. Then, by extension, if the delivery doesn’t look right, expect a variation. “You need a really sound game plan, have your scoring areas and stick to them, and know that the ball that goes the other way is going a long way and accept you’ll miss it. “I wish I could spin it both ways,” he added ruefully. Williamson got to 58, sharing a 95-run stand with Taylor before falling lbw to Narine. New Zealand’s openers didn’t prosper, captain Darren Sammy snapping up two smart catches and as the ball started to zap off the pitch late in the day, the signs were ominous. “The challenge is different here, [we’ve] been thrown a curve ball,” Williamson said. Ross Taylor became just the third New Zealand batsman to score 400 runs in a three-test series. He’ll start today at 418 runs. The others are Glenn Turner (403 v Australia, 1974) and Andrew Jones (513 v Sri Lanka, 1991). When he caught last man Tino Best yesterday, wicketkeeper BJ Watling became the seventh New Zealand gloveman to take five catches in a test innings. Earlier Chanderpaul, with late hitting from Permaul and Tino Best, got the West Indies up to respectability, and eased his test average above 52 in his 153rd test. He is a marvel of West Indian cricket. You only need to ponder the state their batting would be in without him to appreciate his value. - NZH

Scorchers lose star import BY JUSTIN CHADWICK The Perth Scorchers have been left with a gaping hole at the top of the order after star import Dwayne Smith failed to make his scheduled flight to Australia due to personal reasons. Smith has been ruled out of the Scorchers’ season opener against

Brisbane Heat on Sunday, and there’s no guarantee the West Indian will feature at all in this summer’s Big Bash. The 30-year-old only told the Scorchers about his situation on Tuesday, leaving it too late for the Perth-based franchise to find a replacement import. With the explosive Smith una-

vailable for selection against the Heat at the Gabba, skipper Simon Katich is a strong chance to open the batting with Shaun Marsh. The Scorchers were dealt another blow earlier this week when it was confirmed star paceman Pat Cummins would miss the entire BBL as he recovers from a back injury. - AAP

When Adam Gilchrist trudged off the WACA with a duck to his name in December 2006, he decided enough was enough. It was then and there Gilchrist made up his mind to quit after the 2006/07 Ashes. “The game had worn me down and I didn’t want to go on,” Gilchrist recalls. So the star wicketkeeper returned home to tell his wife the news. Her reaction wasn’t quite what he expected, and it made him change his mind. “She figuratively smacked me around the head a few times and told me to stop whinging about a duck,” Gilchrist says with a laugh. “It was a good chat. It smacked a bit of sense into me, and I managed to score a hundred in the next innings.” That hundred just so happened to be the second fastest century in Test cricket. Gilchrist’s 57-ball ton put England to the sword in 42-degree heat in Perth. But Gilchrist revealed his blazing attitude that day only came about through a miscommunication. “I felt we needed to press on and potentially declare that night - to have a crack at the English just prior to stumps,” Gilchrist says. “Clarkey and I asked for a signal from Punter - a thumb’s up or a thumb’s down. A thumb’s up meant we should go for it, and a thumb’s down meant we should bat sensibly until stumps. “We were certain we saw a thumb’s up. “But as I came running into the change rooms after we declared, he said, “What the hell was that all about?” “Apparently it was a thumb’s down. But he was happy to go for the ride, and the end result was good.” Lady Luck was also on Gilchrist’s side that day. “I should have been out for a pair,” Gilchrist says. “Andrew Flintoff unsurprisingly came on to bowl when I came out to bat. “My first scoring shot was a flashy push outside off stump and the ball flew through the gully re-

gion, where no one was standing. “So I was lucky to get off the mark. It’s a fine line sometimes.” Instead of hanging up the gloves after Australia’s 5-0 Ashes rout of England in 2006/07, Gilchrist played on for another year before retiring from international cricket. Gilchrist was inducted into the ICC’s Cricket Hall of Fame last week, with the 42-year-old joining an illustrious list that includes former team-mates Steve Waugh, Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne. The hard-hitting batsman experienced a host of highs during his decorated career, but one of his most painful moments was being part of the side that surrendered the Ashes 2-1 in 2005. “I remember when we retained

the Ashes in 11 days in 2002. It was four days in Brisbane, four days in Adelaide, and a three-day Test match in Perth,” Gilchrist said. “And I also remember Steve Waugh saying: ‘It’s fantastic to have retained the Ashes, but gee, it would have been good if there was a bit more resistance’. “I’ll never forget those words, particularly as I stood on The Oval balcony watching England celebrate in 2005. “It taught me a great lesson about not tempting fate, not taking anything for granted and never, ever disrespecting the game.” Australia lead the current Ashes series 3-0, and will be aiming to repeat the feat of the powerful 2006/07 Test team by completing a 5-0 rout. - AAP

In brief Mackay on thin ice Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay is on the verge of leaving the Premier League club after being told to resign or face being sacked by Malaysian owner Vincent Tan. Mackay was severely rebuked by Tan earlier this week after angering the club’s supremo by asking to sign at least three players during the January transfer window. The 41-year-old was told by Tan that he wouldn’t get any new funds in the new year because he had already been handed a significant transfer kitty following Cardiff’s promotion from the Championship last season. - AFP

Crunch for PSG, Lille Two points clear going into the final round of games of 2013, Paris Saint-Germain can clinch the symbolic title of autumn champions when they entertain challengers Lille this weekend. PSG come into the weekend two points clear of Monaco at the top of Ligue 1, with Lille a further two points adrift in third place, so a win for Laurent Blanc’s side would open a significant gap to their opponents. - AFP

Celtic out of Europe Celtic assistant manager Johan Mjallby hopes the Parkhead side’s packed festive schedule will help them get over their disappointment of exiting Europe. The Hoops failed to emulate last season’s achievement of qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League, finishing bottom of their group and leaving the Glasgow giants with just the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup to concentrate on. Having beaten Hibernian in their first match following the end of their European adventure, the Parkhead club face four games in the space of 12 days starting with the visit of Hearts on Saturday. - AFP

Hopes rest on Rooney Manchester United manager David Moyes is hopeful Wayne Rooney will have recovered from a groin injury in time to face West Ham at Old Trafford this weekend. Rooney, 28, missed United’s 2-0 win at Stoke in the League Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday, but Moyes is desperate for the England forward to be fit to face the Hammers as he tries restore the champions to the Premier League title race. United are already 10 points adrift of leaders Arsenal heading into this weekend’s fixtures and, with Robin van Persie out for a month with a thigh problem, Moyes needs Rooney, who has scored 10 goals so far this season for his club. - AFP

Reality check for Milan AC Milan’s bid to close a yawning gap to Serie A pacesetters Juventus, Roma and Napoli faces another reality check in the city derby at Inter Milan on Sunday. After another inauspicious start to the season, Milan sit mid-table but 24 points adrift of leaders Juventus and, perhaps more worryingly, with a 16-point deficit to Napoli who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot. The chances of Milan salvaging a top-three finish at the end of the season look slim - and goalkeeper Christian Abbiati admits a win would be welcome. - AFP

Phoenix’ woes continue By AngelA HABAsHy Still searching for their first win this season, the Wellington Phoenix now have off-field woes to add to their misery on it in the form of star playmaker Carlos Hernandez. Hernandez flew home to Wellington on Thursday, hours before the Phoenix’s 1-0 loss to Central Coast Mariners at North Sydney Oval. The Costa Rican international was reported to have left the squad disgruntled with the club over delays in bringing his family to New Zealand. Coach Ernie Merrick said after the Mariners game there was some truth to the reports, however his main concern was the recurrence of a thigh injury which forced Hernandez to miss the 4-2 loss to Perth on December 6. The 31-year-old returned for last weekend’s loss to the Brisbane, but Merrick didn’t want to risk him in Thursday’s game, three days out from Sunday’s home fixture against Sydney FC. “We brought him over thinking he was right but his quad wasn’t right...he wouldn’t have been able to play two games in four days, so we didn’t play him for that reason,” Merrick said.

Carlos Hernandez: Problems with getting his family to New Zealand, as well as injuries.

“The other thing is he seems to have an issue regarding his contract, which really surprises me because I know the club are working really hard to get his children passports and visas to get out here. “I’m sure we’ll get to the bottom of it in the next couple of days.” Despite missing the playmaker, the Phoenix weren’t lacking in attack, firing a barrage of strikes at the Mariners goal, only to be denied by a standout

display from keeper Liam Reddy. “We played pretty well without him,” Merrick conceded. “You can’t have a team built around one player.” Ninth-placed Phoenix have so far had 53 shots on target this season, third only to topdogs Brisbane (57) and Melbourne Victory (54) in creating chances. But while only managing to find the back of the net nine times in 10 games, Merrick re-

mained hopeful the goals would come. “The optimism is that if we keep creating chances, by the law of averages and numbers, it’s got to go our way,” he said. “I think the only way is drilling it into them at training and coaching it so much that it becomes second nature, it’s reflexive. “The boys tell me that they’ve never practised shooting so much in their lives. Practice makes perfect, as they say.” - AAP

Mourinho feeling the strain By steven griffitHs Jose Mourinho admits he is starting to feel the strain of Chelsea’s inconsistent form as his side head to Arsenal for a crucial clash against the English Premier League leaders. Mourinho is growing increasingly vexed by the misfiring form of Chelsea’s strikers and the Blues boss has so far been unable to find a solution to a problem that threatens to wreck the team’s challenge for the title. Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba have scored just five league goals between them this term, leaving Mourinho under pressure to resolve the issue by making a signing in the January transfer market. A host of players including Zenit Saint Petersburg striker Hulk and Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa have been linked with Chelsea, but Mourinho must make do and mend

until then, starting with the most significant match of the season to date at the Emirates Stadium on Monday. While a win for second placed Liverpool over Cardiff at Anfield on Saturday would knock Arsenal off the top, the result of the London derby between the Gunners and Chelsea will been seen as an indication of which club is more likely to last the pace in the title race. A win for Arsenal would take them five points clear of third placed Chelsea, who have already lost seven times in all competitions this season, and deepen the sense of gloom at Stamford Bridge following their surprise League Cup quarter-final defeat at struggling Sunderland in midweek. In the circumstances, Mourinho could do with his strikers finally finding their shooting boots and he said: “Missing goals. It’s always the same

Jose Mourinho: Looking forward to the January transfer market.

words. It’s unbelievable. “Even on the bench, I feel every time we miss a chance and the score is 0-0, 1-0, 2-1, 1-1, I feel the pressure.” Arsenal will be without England midfielder Jack Wilshere on Monday after he was handed a two-game suspension for making an offensive gesture at Manchester City fans during last weekend’s 6-3 thrashing.

That humbling result raised questions about Arsenal’s ability to maintain their title challenge and the likely absence of French defender Laurent Koscielny, who suffered a deep gash in his knee just before halftime at Eastlands, is a further blow for Arsene Wenger’s side. Manchester City, currently three points behind Arsenal in fourth place, travel to second bottom Fulham hoping to transfer their free-scoring home form to a vital away game. Seventh placed Tottenham visit Southampton for their first league match since Andre Villas-Boas’s sacking on Monday. Manchester United, languishing 10 points behind the leaders, host West Ham looking to build on their back to back away wins at Aston Villa last weekend and then Stoke in the League Cup on Wednesday. - AFP

OUR VIEW

Take time to de-stress these holidays Coen Lammers EDITOR

T

his weekend Ashburton will be reaching the crescendo of the Christmas shopping frenzy. While some will have started their holiday break last night, many will work through Monday and Tuesday, so late shoppers will be roaming the shops looking for presents or to stock up on their food and beverages. We are told that Christmas is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, but sadly for many Christmas equates to stress – financially, emotionally or physically. Despite the growing prosperity across the Ashburton District, many families live week to week and Christmas for them is a train wreck they can see coming months ahead. And as they count down the days to Christmas, the concerns get bigger on how to give their families a Christmas they will enjoy. Others feel overwhelmed by trying to wrap up their year at work, get their families ready to go on holiday and also trying to prepare for Christmas. Many young and old will feel tired after a long year at work or at school and their resilience may be a bit low, just when demands are pulling them in all directions. Some families and individuals dread this time of the year because they don’t want to be in the same room with some relatives, or because the festive season reminds them of a loved one that is missing this year. For the majority of us though, the coming week will hopefully still be a time to be merry, enjoy our families, the food and our presents. Among all the materialistic gifts around, the best present we can give ourselves is a break. The current AllRight campaign is a wonderful initiative to remind ourselves to lower our expectations of what Christmas should be like, reduce the stress, enjoy the holidays, and most importantly, look for ways to brighten up the day for others around us. Being kind and putting a smile on another person’s face must be the best, and cheapest, Christmas present around.

A magic festive moment

T

his time of year I start to feel like the Grinch who stole Christmas. The shops are impossible; crowded and noisy, and there is always some poor Mum with a tired scratchy baby or toddler. What gets me most about these situations is that no-one ever offers to help her. Instead other shoppers seem to relish the opportunity to give the mothers of those babies the evil eye, or suggest loudly that they just shouldn’t be there. The poor woman is probably doing all she can to get the child home, and really doesn’t need the extra stress. It’s hardly the sign of peace on earth and goodwill to all women. I have only rarely seen a man who does the present shopping or fronts up for the annual Christmas shopping wars. For years I have been of the opinion that it would be best

to leave the country for about a week before Christmas and not come back until about a week after New Year. Or to pack up my baby caravan and head for the hills. But for the most part, the rivers

heart. There is a team of people who in the aftermath of the earthquakes are running what is termed the, AllRight campaign I was aware of it because of the many billboards around Christchurch asking us to realise we’re okay, followed by something we can be grateful for. It’s unusual that I’ve noticed them, because usually I find billboards about as interesting as watching paint dry. It’s the first time I can re-

are polluted and I can’t take a dog into any of the campsites which have access to clean swimming holes. But there was one thing in Christchurch earlier this week which gladdened my stoney

member taking any notice of them at all. In addition to the billboards they’ve also run a compliments surprise. At a large service station they set up a mock radio sta-

tion with two aspiring DJs, a speaker over the forecourt and a camera somewhere, presumably out of sight. As unsuspecting customers got out of their cars, they were bombarded with compliments, tailored to ensure the targets knew the compliments really were aimed at them As they moved in to pay, they were given large bunches of flowers, and then on reaching the counter, were told their fuel had already been paid for. The looks on their faces featured astonishment, incredulity, and finally, utter happiness. For a short time at least, their worries were over. It was the most amazingly effective and memorable publicity stunt I’ve ever seen. It will stay in my mind, and bring a smile when I think of it. But for the unexpecting and delighted recipients of the campaign, I suspect the memories will always be even more vivid than mine.

‘God grant me patience but hurry’

A

t this time of the year our patience seems to wear thin. The list of things we need to do and the things we need to buy just grows bigger every day. We get impatient when we can’t get a carpark at the door of the shop that we only need to pop into, we get irritable when we have to wait for traffic, the kids can’t wait for school to finish and the holidays begin and the parents, after a week of holidays, can’t wait for the holidays to end and school to begin, we can’t wait to go on holiday, some people can’t wait for Christmas to be over because of the family tensions that build as they spend more time together. Many of us aren’t very good at waiting. And we do a lot of waiting at this time of year. At this time of the year in the church calendar we are in Advent – a time of waiting. We are often in an incredible hurry. But God is not. Have you discovered that? We want

things to happen now if not sooner. God seems to take His time. God operates on His time not ours. Waiting is not a popular pas time in our culture today. We have our photos developed as we stand there, take our clothes to same-day dry cleaners, and buy food at a fast food restaurant. We pay our bills over the phone and do our banking on the internet where there are no long lines of waiting people. When a lift takes a long time to arrive, or the walk sign won’t appear when we want to cross the road we give the button another series of rapid jabs. Advent is when we a wait the coming of the baby Jesus. Waiting is about having time to prepare for something. That

is what Advent is about; it is about having time to prepare for the birth of Christ. I don’t mean all the mad rushing around we do to decorate the tree and house, prepare the food, squeeze in one more party, buy one more overpriced and unnecessary present. I mean prepare to be spending time reflecting on what the baby born in a manger means to the world and to you personally. It means taking time out for yourself to prepare your heart and minds. Mary in her waiting knew something great and significant was to come at the end of her waiting. May we take time in the hustle and bustle leading up to Christmas to wait and, as we do, may we pray and reflect, to listen to what the waiting and birth say to us and to wait in calmness to restore our weary and worn-out spirit enabling us to care for ourselves and others. If as you wait for Christmas

you would like to share in the joy and celebration of Christmas I encourage you to attend a service at one of our local churches. If you want to wait with us, then join us on Christmas Eve at 11pm for Carols by Candlelight at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. If you would like to wait for your Christmas dinner to be cooked and the friends and family to arrive then please wait with us at 9am on Christmas Day at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church for a Christmas Day Family Service. On behalf of the members of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Rev. David Brown and myself I wish you all a very Happy Christmas filled with love, peace, hope and joy. May you make the most of all the opportunities that come your way in 2014. Dellwyn Moylan is ministry assistant at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church – Ashburton

■ UNITED STATES

In brief

US vows to move on The United States has pointed to the broad sweep of its relationship with India as it tries to move past a row over the stripsearching of an Indian diplomat, but has stopped short of the apology demanded by New Delhi. Top State Department officials called their Indian counterparts for the third time in two days to try to draw a line under the controversy over the female diplomat, Devyani Khobragade, who is accused by US prosecutors of under-paying her Indian maid in New York. Subsequent revelations that Khobragade was stripped by US Marshals and subjected to an invasive body search have caused outrage in India, whose government wants Washington to drop the case and offer an apology. US Secretary of State John Kerry has expressed “regret” and stressed that the issue should not be allowed to derail a “vital relationship” - a message amplified in a phone call yesterday by State Department number three Wendy Sherman to Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh. “What we’re focused on now

... is working to move the relationship forward,” State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters after the call, in which she said “both parties affirmed our intent to keep working through this complex issue.” Harf stressed that the “isolated episode” was “certainly not indicative of our broad and deep and vital bilateral relationship.” “We work together on a host of issues, whether it’s economic issues, trade, Afghanistan (or) other issues, and that is only going to continue to increase,” the spokeswoman said. The row was sparked by last Thursday’s arrest of Khobragade, the deputy consul general at India’s mission in New York, as she dropped her children off at school. The 39-year-old, who is now free on bail, was detained over allegations that she paid the domestic worker a small fraction of New York’s minimum wage and lied about the employee’s salary in a visa application. US federal prosecutor Preet Bharara has insisted Khobragade was arrested in the “most discreet” way possible and in-

sisted his sole motivation was to uphold the rule of law, protect victims and hold accountable anyone who breaks the law “no matter how powerful, rich or connected they are.” But India’s foreign ministry spokesman lashed out at Bharara’s comments, saying “there is only one victim in this case (and) that victim is Devyani Khobragade.”

India’s Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid said he hoped the “valuable relationship” with Washington would soon return to an even keel. But with a general election just months away, the ruling Congress party and the nationalist opposition Bharatiya Janata Party are both keen to demonstrate willingness to take a tough diplomatic line. - AFP

Priest jailed 50 years after abuse started Father Finian Egan had escaped punishment for sexually abusing young girls for more than 50 years. But now the frail and elderly Catholic priest has been jailed for at least four years for abusing three young NSW girls over the course of three decades. Egan’s victims, whose lives were irrevocably damaged by the abuse inflicted on them, stood in the District Court in Sydney yesterday and watched as he was falteringly led away to spend his first night in jail. He will be 83 years of age by the time he is eligible for release. Egan enjoyed a position of power and privilege as a Catholic priest at a time when, among religious communities, priests were considered among the elite of society. He abused that position of power again and again, preying on vulnerable young girls whose “powerlessness and helplessness” was exacerbated by their vulnerability, Judge Robyn Tupman said as she sentenced Egan to a maximum term of eight years.

His first victim was just 10 years old when her family sent her to a Sydney disadvantaged girls’ home in 1961, in the hope she would receive better care than they could give her. “Her troubled family asked for protection from the church but did not receive it,” Judge Tupman said. Instead the girl was targeted by Egan, then aged 27, who regularly invited her to the church sacristy where he pulled her on his lap and indecently assaulted her. He said her hair was beautiful, prompting her to ask for it to be cut off in the hope that he would then no longer be interested in her. To this day, the woman hates being complimented or having her hair touched. She described how she kept the abuse secret for 50 years after initially confiding in a nun who then flogged her, forced her to drink castor oil and made her clean up her own vomit. “It’s unfortunate in the extreme her complaint was not taken seriously by those whose care she was under, because it might have meant the other (vic-

tims) in this trial were spared the sexual attention of the offender,” Judge Tupman said. Instead, Egan was free to strike again a decade later when he victimised a 17-year-old girl whose family he befriended. The devout Catholic family thought Egan, their parish priest, was “charming and charismatic”. But he abused his victim “a naive good Catholic girl” - in front of her unsuspecting mother before raping her in a convent.

Afterwards, he took her to confess her “sins” to another priest who ordered her not to let Egan touch her again. She tried to jump out of Egan’s moving car immediately afterwards. The woman wept as Judge Tupman said Egan’s abuse “took away her childhood and innocence”. Egan’s third victim, Kellie Roche, refuses to be labelled as such. “I’m a survivor,” she told the court. When Egan inappropriately touched her in 1987, she confided in her religious mother who refused to believe her and labelled her claims as “rubbish”. The priest went on to indecently assault Ms Roche, then aged 17, in a playground. Egan, who was found guilty of rape and seven counts of indecent assault by a jury last month, has never shown remorse. “He thinks he hasn’t done anything wrong, still,” Ms Roche told reporters outside court. “(But) someone who is a danger to society is now off the streets.” Egan will be eligible for parole in December 2017. - AAP

Ex-oil tycoon and Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky has asked Russian President Vladimir Putin for a pardon under pressure from security services, the Kommersant newspaper reports. Putin yesterday stunned Russia by saying the country’s most famous prisoner, who has been in jail since 2003, had asked for clemency on humanitarian grounds, saying his mother was ill. The former chief of Yukos oil company, once Russia’s richest man, had repeatedly said he would not ask Putin for pardon because it would be tantamount to admitting guilt. Putin’s announcement came as Russia is coming under increasing international scrutiny of its rights record in the run-up to hosting the Winter Olympics in February. - AFP

Pollution shrouds Lhasa China’s pollution has reached new heights, as the Tibetan capital of Lhasa was shrouded in a cloud of dust that halted flights and rendered one of its mostrecognisable landmarks nearly invisible. Lhasa, which at 3700 metres above sea level is one of the highest cities on the world, was named by China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection last month as one of 10 cities with the country’s best air quality. But yesterday, the picturesque capital of the Tibetan region was enveloped in a thick cloud of pollution that the Hong Kong-based ifeng.com news website said was caused by dust that had blown in from north of the Tibetan plateau. - AFP

Crisis in Cyprus The Cyprus parliament has approved the island’s first postbailout budget providing deep spending cuts in 2014 of about 10 per cent to ensure international bailout targets are met. The majority vote - 30 for, 20 against and four abstentions - came after a two-day debate. Around 626 million euros ($A972.20 million) has been shaved off the budget compared with 2013. Net expenditure, minus interest payments, will reach 5.59 billion euros next year compared with 6.22 billion provided for in the 2013 budget. In return for a 10 billioneuro bailout, international creditors demanded the winding up of the country’s second largest bank Laiki and a “haircut” on deposits above 100,000 euros in its largest lender, Bank of Cyprus. The unprecedented eurozone “haircut” on deposits forced the government to close all the island’s banks for nearly two weeks in March and impose draconian controls when they reopened. - AFP

■ RABOBANK FORECAST

Dairy prices expected to stay high BY JAMIE GRAY Rural lending specialist Rabobank said it expects world dairy prices to remain at the current elevated levels in 2014 because of ongoing strong demand from China. International dairy commodity prices strengthened from already high levels in the three months to mid-December and are expected to remain high at least for the first half of 2014, Rabobank said. The increase of export supply since September, as producers have responded to improved margins, has been largely been soaked up by China. “Global prices have remained high despite the taps being turned on in key export regions,” Rabobank analyst Tim Hunt said in a market commentary.

“China continues to buy exceptionally large volumes of product from the international market to supplement falling local milk supply and this is likely to mop up most, if not all, of the increase in exports arising from key surplus regions in the fourth quarter.” Despite a small softening in prices in October and November, global prices have remained firm. By mid-December, whole milk powder - the most important segement New Zealand producers - held above US$5000 a tonne. China’s buying has left the rest of the international market with less supply to go round, keeping the market tight, it said. Rabobank believes many of the buyers in regions including South East Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, have

■ NOVEMBER MIGRATION

November migration remains static New Zealand’s inbound migration remained elevated in November as new migrants kept arriving and fewer locals drifted across the Tasman. The country gained a seasonally adjusted net 2800 new migrants in November, down from the 10-year high of 3000 in October, according to Statistics New Zealand. On an actual basis, there was an inflow of 3700, up from 1700 a year earlier. The seasonally adjusted net loss to Australia of 980 was the third month in a row where the outflow across the Tasman was lower than 1000. On an annual basis, there was a net inflow of 19,500 new migrants to New Zealand, turning around an outflow of 1600 a year earlier. A net inflow of British migrants led the annual gain with 5940, followed by 5575 Chinese migrants and 5300 Indians. Rising migration is seen as one of the contributing factors for the bubbling property market in Auckland, the country’s biggest city and traditional

gateway, which has created a headache for the Reserve Bank in that it will have to hike interest rates to damp future inflation, but doesn’t want to make an already strong currency look any more attractive. The figures also showed an 8.2 per cent lift in short-term visitor arrivals to 251,100 in November from a year earlier, and an annual gain of 5.3 per cent to 2.7 million. Positive sentiment lifts markets

I

n this article we’ll cover sharemarket news from the current quarter including a summary of the global, Australian and New Zealand equity markets as well as the fixed interest market. Global equity markets advanced over the last month and for the quarter. A more benign view on tapering, coupled with a better than expected corporate reporting season, helped a positive sentiment. European equities saw the biggest gains, with Europe beginning to emerge from recession after six consecutive quarters of falling GDP. United States equities recovered during November, helped by 70% of companies beating forecast profit expectations. In New Zealand, the run-up in Price over Earnings (P/E) multiples ahead of earnings being delivered seems to have moved too far and led to the market declining during November. This wasn’t helped by regulatory and political issues emerging, or market indigestion post the Government’s sell-down of its Air New Zealand and Meridian stakes. The Australian equity market’s poor performance reflected the subdued domestic

economy. Australian September GDP growth disappointed and showed that private consumption grew by just 0.2% in the September quarter. The mining industry contributed half of the growth in the quarter, but with mining accounting for just 10% of the economy, that meant nonmining industries barely grew at all. The end result was November saw profit taking across the board. Financials and sectors with exposure to international earnings were the best performers. Looking at the fixed interest market, the prospect of the tapering of the US Federal Reserve’s bond purchases being closer meant that longerterm bond rates drifted higher over the quarter. New Zealand’s stronger relative economic conditions also meant higher shorter term rates and the New Zealand dollar remaining strong. Domesti-

Meanwhile the prices of commodity feeds such as soybeans and corn have fallen 10 per cent to 40 per cent below prior year levels in US dollar terms, opening up large margins for milk producers in intensive feeding regions. Rabobank expects a further increase in China’s dairy purchases from the world market in 2014. “We expect prices to hold around current highs before easing from mid to late 2014 with continuing supply growth in response to significantly improved margins,” Hunt said. “Any subsequent reduction in pricing will be limited by structural constraints on suppliers, the need to replenish depleted inventories and ongoing demand growth in line with a slow economic recovery,” he said. - APNZ

cally, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) is still suggesting a higher Official Cash Rate (OCR) next year. However, the introduction of new macro-prudential tools such as the new loan-to-value (LVR) policy signals that the RBNZ would prefer to defer OCR increases as long as possible, so as to avoid the risk of further bolstering the value of the New Zealand dollar. The RBNZ is therefore expected to give these alternative policy measures time to work, before addressing cash rates.
