National proposes four-lane highway BY KATIE TODD

KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

National have unveiled plans to fourlane the highway between Ashburton and Christchurch if re-elected. As part of the Roads of Natural Significance programme, National have vowed to expand and improve State Highway 1 to boost economic growth, reduce travel time and lower the number of crashes. The new road would feature two wide lanes and wide, sealed shoulders in either direction, from Ashburton to Christchurch, separated down the middle. National are also promising safe roadsides clear of obstacles and ditches, high quality signage and a high standard of landscaping and environmental controls. National Party Candidate for Rangitata Andrew Falloon says he is “thrilled” with the news. “Extending the road to four lanes has been a major focus of mine since I was selected,” he said. It’s great to have the support of the Prime Minister, Transport Minister and other senior ministers.” While Falloon’s “ideal situation” is a four-lane highway all the way to Tima-

National Party candidate for Rangitata, Andrew Falloon, is thrilled with new roading plans.

ru, he described the proposed changes as a huge endorsement of Canterbury’s growing economy. “It will have a hugely positive impact on travel times and road safety, benefiting not just Mid Canterbury but also South Canterbury and the wider region.” The Roads of Significance plan would invest $10.5 billion into roads across the country, with 10 major projects undertaken including Ashburton to Christchurch, the Christchurch northern motor-

way, Auckland’s East-West link and the Manuatu Gorge. The roading project would serve to reduce congestion, improve safety and support economic growth. Falloon says he hasn’t given up on four-laning all the way to Timaru, which he “firmly believes” will be required in the future. “I’ll continue to push for our fair share of new infrastructure spending if I’m elected as Rangitata’s MP.”
