FULL STORY

Methven’s multi-million dollar hot pools project is about to move one giant step closer to becoming one of the Ashburton District’s most significant tourist attractions. After years of planning and fundraising, the pools’ shareholders are close to applying for a resource consent for the development, which is planned for land adjoining the Mt Harding Racecourse. They have carried out extensive research on potential use of the facility and estimate the complex would attract about 100,000 visitors a year,

adding significant value to the district’s tourism sector. Grow Mid Canterbury chief executive Rob Brawley says it will take between six months and a year to move through the resource consent process. Shareholder representatives have started talking with potentially affected landowner neighbours to ensure they supported or were aware of what was planned. Consultation has also begun with the wider community. “The more we take the community with us, the easier the resource consent application should be,” Mr Brawley said.

Along with project manager Bert Hofmans, Mr Brawley this week updated the Methven Community Board on progress with the project. The site for the pool complex is on Main Street, behind the Equus Park proposed subdivision. It is being sited to take advantage of magnificent views to Mt Hutt and the Southern Alps. A resource consent is required because the commercial activity will be on the land, zoned Rural A.
