Stories of elderly residents afraid to venture onto the Ashburton streets alone, businesses who have been robbed repeatedly, bullying and assaults at the hands of a hardcore group of youth offenders have been aired at a public meeting. Residents turned out in the hundreds to yesterday’s meeting convened by Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew to address a
youth crime wave in their community. Associate Justice Minister Mark Mitchell, along with representatives from police and other government and non-government agencies who deal with youth offenders were in attendance to hear what the community had to say. The message was loud and clear and frustration boiled over as questions were asked as to the apparent lack of consequences and restitution for a
group of around 12 recidivist youth offenders. Recently as many as 40 young people had been identified as associating to the group and statistics pointed to a sharp spike in the number currently before the Youth Court, Goodhew said.
