If you were a regular shopper at Countdown Ashburton a few years ago, there’s a fairly high chance you met Daryl Kitto (right).

There’s also a fairly high chance that Daryl called out a cheery hello to you and then happily collected the trolley you’d just placed in the trolley bay, and took it back into the store.

But those cheery waves and happy hellos are no more.

Daryl – a former trolley attendant at Countdown Ashburton – died on Sunday, after slipping and falling to his death while

having his photo taken at the Rakaia Gorge.

It’s understood he had visited Ashburton that day and had stopped for a photo while taking the scenic route home.

He was with two carers – from community mental health service Emerge Aotearoa – and one of those carers was taking his photo when he fell down the steep cliff and hit a tree. They tried unsuccessfully to reach him after the fall.

Tracey Hydes worked with Daryl – a popular member of staff – at Countdown Ashburton and she said those who knew him were shocked when they found out about his death through news reports.

Teen helps in recovery

Ashburton teenager Lachie Davidson is part of a group of volunteers in Ecuador helping with the earthquake recovery effort.

Lachie, along with the other volunteers, was in Ecuador with Lattitude Global Volunteering when a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit 173km northwest of the capital Quito at about 7pm on Saturday (midday Sunday NZT).

The quake, Ecuador’s worst in decades, has killed nearly 500 people, injured more than 4000 and left 20,500 sleeping in shelters.

The group of teens have been staying in the city of Cuenca, which is eight hours’ drive south of the capital, where they have been volunteering in the community.

Lachie Davidson Lachie has been teaching at a school for children with disabilities and a local high school but following the quake the Ashburton College 2015 head boy has also been helping with the recovery effort.

“In Cuenca, where we are based, the recovery is in full swing.”

Lachie and four other volunteers have been packaging medication and first aid supplies at a local university to be sent up north and will spend the next week helping out at a donation centre.

“It’s a stressful time here but also it’s great to see everyone making such an effort to help those in need,” he said.

“Obviously the death toll is still rising and aftershocks are continuing and the true extent of the damage is now very visible.”

They have also created a Givealittle page for New Zealanders to donate money to be used directly in the recovery effort.

“I hope that the people of Ash-

burton can find the time to donate to this cause even if only a few dollars, as here in Ecuador a few dollars can go a very long way.

“I have experienced first-hand the kindness and generosity of the Ecuadorian people for the last two months, from the people I work with to my host family who treat me like their own son.

“The Givealittle page and the volunteer work we are doing is a way that we can give back and help the people of north Ecuador in this time of need.”

Lachie will spend the next seven or so months volunteering in Ecuador and Argentina. He will also take a month off to travel the West Coast of South America.

Fun times in tug of war at holiday programme Hunter Abernathy, Elle Arbuckle, Emma Wood, Matilda Farr and Riley Stevens put all their might into tug of war at Sport Canterbury’s Active Kids holiday programme yesterday.

The programme, which is based out of the EA Networks Centre, runs for one week for children aged five to 13.

They get to experience a number of different sports including football, basketball netball and teeball.

A woman who worked as a carer for Daryl while he lived in Ashburton described him as a lovely man who enjoyed socialising and getting out in the community. She recalled him being a keen runner, biker and pool player, and said he loved his job; he just loved anything social.

She said she still had photos of Daryl, and she felt for the carers who were with him when the accident occurred.

“As soon as I saw the name, I just thought I could imagine it, because he was like that. He was someone that I would have described as being like a bull in a china shop, he just always wanted to help and do things,” the woman said.

Daryl was believed to have been a Special Olympic basketballer in the 1990s.

Special Olympics Mid Canterbury president Colleen Lindsay said Daryl was a good swimmer, and he rode his bike everywhere, and many of the current Special Olympics community would hold fond memories of their days competing alongside him.

Daryl will be farewelled at a service in Christchurch today, at 2pm.

After serving the community for more than 30 years, Ashburton’s elderly community pool is destined to become a pile of rubble and its site an open, grassed space.

In spite of attempts to put the covered pool to new use, possibly as a large assembly hall for Ashburton College, a damning structural engineer’s report indicated the pool’s days are over. That meant it was of no further use to the school and its future became the Ashburton District Council’s problem.

The corrosive atmosphere of a pool meant the building had no reuse potential, and ultimately that meant its only future was demolition.

Board chairman Rennie Davidson said that while the college would have loved the facility to be turned into an assembly hall, the costs around the conversion work were just too high.

“We’ve exhausted all the options for utilising it; none of them are going to stack up,” he said.

No decision had been made about reusing what would become a green space, but he did not rule out in the future a facility

that could be a combined assembly hall and community facility.

Council group services manager Paul Brake is now working on a heads of agreement between the council and the Ministry of Education that will spell out details around the demolition and how costs will be divvied up. And those costs, Mr Brake said, could be considerable.

“As part of the demolition the ministry wants the pool filled in and the site restored. There will be particular health and safety issues around this with a building being demolished over a big hole in the ground,” he said.

Because the demolition process requires the heads of agreement to be signed off and then tenders called, it is unlikely the project will be approved by the council for at least three months, Mr Brake said.

“We’ll also need to confirm with the school whether there will be issues around timing with students at school.”

While disappointed the pool couldn’t be turned to a new use, college principal Grant McMillan said the costs around this were likely to be very high.

“The reuse option was not to be and demolition is probably going to be the safest option,” he said.

Here today, but not for much longer, the old Ashburton community pool is booking a date with the bulldozer as options for its future use are exhausted.

Making contacts at the rate of 40 seconds a time

First there was speed dating, and now, there’s speed networking.

It’s the same principle – you sit across the table from someone, and have just 40 seconds to tell them about yourself, and 40 seconds to find out about them.

But the idea behind it isn’t to find love, it’s to make contacts, and put faces to the names of people you may have heard of, or have spoken to on the phone, but not met.

Now, Mid Canterbury is preparing to have its own speed networking event. It’s a project being spearheaded by Marie McAnulty, a woman who knows all too well how hard it is to meet people, and settle in to a new town.

She’s been in Mid Canterbury

for a couple of years and has been the SEEDS Family Wellbeing Programme co-ordinator for the past 18 months. Today, she feels like part of the community, but the early days weren’t easy.

“You have to ask people, who’s this, and who’s that, and it’s nice to put a face to the person you’re talking to on the phone sometimes,” she said.

The idea of speed networking came from a similar event she was part of in the Wairarapa, and it’s one she hopes will work well in Mid Canterbury.

The event will be for community groups and government agencies; groups from Safer Ashburton and Community House, and representatives from agencies like the police, Corrections, Winz and the Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug

Service (Acads), will be among those invited.

“We want as many people as possible and we will have rows of seats and in 40 seconds you will tell me about what you do, and I will have 40 seconds to tell you what I do,” Mrs McAnulty said.

“And if you can help me, and I can help you, you give each other your cards.”

Just like a speed dating event, there will be a social time at the end for people to take the networking further.

“I know it’s a bit different, and maybe a bit weird, but hopefully it will work,” Mrs McAnulty said.

The Ashburton speed networking event will be held at the Seniors Centre on May 26 from 2pm until 4.30pm.

Jet boaters face dilemma

As the Canterbury proposal stands, local boaties could travel at speed on any river, except those in Canterbury, he said.

Under the new law, boaties would have the option of joining the association, or they could pay to have an individual uplifting of the speed limit that would apply to their boat only, Mr Street said.

If a new law is passed unchallenged, Ashburton boaties could be faced with a choice of coughing up cash or breaking the law if they want to travel faster than 5 kilometres an hour on Canterbury rivers.

Over the past 40 years Jet Boating New Zealand has had the speed limits uplifted on most rivers, but the Maritime Transport Act 2014 will change that and the old rules will apply, the organisation’s chairman David Street said.

In an effort to resolve the issue Environment Canterbury has come up with a proposal to allow Jet Boating New Zealand to have the speed limits uplifted, but only for its members. This would

with an annual fee of $122 while an individual uplifting fee was around $350 and would last for five years.

“ECan’s the first council to recognise the effects of the rule change and they came up with this suggestion. Now you’re able to exceed speed limits without being an association member but if this goes through if you’re not a member then you’ll be breaking the law – unless you apply for your own uplifting.”

While experienced jet boaters might object to joining the national organisation and suggest it was a money making venture, the money that came from subs went back into safety work and education, he said.

“Rivers are getting busier and

busier and while experienced boat drivers might think they’re safe they don’t know who’s coming around the corner on the wrong side of the river. Right now you can go out and buy a $60,000 boat and hit the river with no driver training. This is all about safety.”

He likened the boat registration to a scheme that had been running at Lake Hood for the past two or three summers where only registered boats were allowed on the lake.

If the new laws come into effect, boat registration will be policed by ECan. The maritime transport bylaws are currently in draft form and submissions on these close on May 2.

One of New Zealand’s major petrol companies is floating the idea of refusing to sell fuel to Wicked Campers drivers because of the offensive slogans and messages appearing on the hire vehicles.

In a message on its Facebook page yesterday, Z Energy said it had received suggestions that “as a community-focused Kiwi company” it should refuse to fill up the vans because of the slogans.

The company asked people what they thought and in three hours had more than 350 varied replies, under photos of what it called the “mildest” examples of the Wicked slogans. Later, Z Energy posted again saying the company hadn’t developed a firm stance yet and was also unsure if it could legally refuse service.

Police have launched a homicide investigation following the suspicious death of a woman in the central North Island township of Mangakino. Police said they were alerted at about 7.30am yesterday that a 41-year-old woman had died at a property. A 44-year-old man was arrested and charged with assault and was in custody.

Detectives from Taupo were carrying out a scene examination at a property in the small rural settlement.

Eleven months after it opened its doors the gym at the EA Networks Centre has run out of space.

Determined to ensure customers could attend the classes they wanted, the complex’s manager Steve Prescott came up with the idea of holding additional classes in the stadium courts. He asked the Ashburton District Council to fund the cost of foam based matting, the council said yes, the new flooring will be in place and classes up and running by the end of May. The new classes will include boot camps, yoga and activities for mothers and babies.

Homicide investigation

It’s been a race against weather and time for the Ashburton District Council as it struggles to complete its scheduled road resurfacing work before winter arrives.

Council roading manager Brian Fauth said efforts are being made to ensure all planned works in urban Rakaia and Methven are completed, including those above the traditional winter snowline.

Some scheduled work in and around Ashburton, however, is likely to be delayed until mid-October or early November.

“There is no point in doing the resealing if the weather is too cold as the seal won’t take,” he said.

The delays would not add to the council’s bill, Mr Fauth said, as the contractor would be required to complete this contract early next construction season and within the budget originally signed off.

“The resurfacing contractor will complete

all property access ways and new seal areas agreed prior to putting the remaining resurfacing work on hold over the winter,” Mr Fauth said.

From the property owners required to contribute to the cost of sealing their access way, the response had generally been positive, he said. This is being done as part of the resurfacing work in their neighbourhood.

“The access way programme will take around 10 years to complete with its inclusion aimed at making local roads much safer for all road users.”

Roads are prioritised for resurfacing, based on the volume of traffic on them, the seal age and how well they are performing.

“We especially watch out for roads that may become slippery in wet or icy weather.

Roads can be resealed on average four to five times before the full bitumen surface needs to be replaced.”

A 10-year-old boy flown to Starship Hospital on Tuesday after injuring himself on a hammock is in a serious condition. The boy is understood to have been playing with a hammock suspended from a chain when the suspected accidental hanging occurred at a home in Mangawhai Heads.

A Starship Hospital spokesman confirmed the boy’s condition was stable.

‘Not investigated’ A woman who says she has new information about an Auckland cold-case killing says police haven’t investigated her claims.

Katrina Jefferies, 22, was killed in July 2005 and her body was found wrapped in a tarpaulin in Waikowhai Reserve. One News last night reported that a woman says her friend claimed her own car was used to dump Jefferies’ body and she told the TV network she knows who the killer is. It was also reported the woman was “heartbroken and angry” to hear her son was forced to help with dumping the body. She told police about the claims seven months ago, but they had not acted on the information, she said.

Electric cars set to become the way of the future

Within two years there will be a network of electric car charging points around New Zealand that will herald a new way of motoring and Ashburton’s EA Networks could be part of the team driving that change, says the company’s general manager Gordon Guthrie.

Yesterday the future of motoring in New Zealand was unveiled to EA Networks staff when the Better NZ Trust, Leading the Charge road show stopped off in town, bringing with them a line-up of electric cars (plug-ins) that ranged from top of the line, high performance to more modestly priced hybrid models.

And while the Ashburton lines company has already dipped its toe in the electric car market with several hybrid cars in its fleet, Mr Guthrie is keen to make the change to electric models – as soon as they become more affordable.

“Once people start making the change, that’s New Zealand’s emissions problem fixed,” Mr Guthrie said.

EA Networks is already planning three charging stations in the district, probably in Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia.

Demand overseas is already huge (400,000 pre-sold) and while it might be three years away from arriving in New Zealand, Mr Dick said there was already significant

interest from potential Kiwi buyers. The days of an electric car that could only run short distances before it needed recharging were all but gone, he said, with the latest cars running for around 300 kilo-

metres on one charge.

“These cars will change the motoring landscape. There are so many advantages in having an electric car. The running costs are low and so are maintenance costs, they’re extremely low,” Mr Dick said.

And the high performance models are no slugs, zero to 200km/h in just 2.85 seconds, quiet running and with a dashboard computer that displays a wide range of information. Software is regularly updated.

In talking with vehicle sales teams, Mr Dick said most believed that by 2020, 20 per cent of their sales would be plug-ins.

Hand in hand with the trust that’s promoting the switch to electric cars is Steve West’s company charge.net.nz. They’re the driving force behind the planned network of charging points that will stretch from Cape Reinga to Bluff.

Already 18 points have been installed with the goal being to establish 100 by the end of 2017.

“While the new cars will travel considerable distances without recharging, for most owners, the main charge will be at home in the garage, or at work,” Mr West said.

They have started discussions with EA Networks on Ashburton’s charging point network.

Collision ‘devastating’ A friend of the mother and son killed in a car crash near Twizel compared their loss to a nonsmoker dying of lung cancer.

And a family member says it’s the hardest time of their lives.

Mon Chhetri, 37, and her 8-month-old son, Aron, died when the car husband and father Tula Ram Chhetri, 44, was driving pulled into the path of an oncoming vehicle on Tuesday evening.

The family were members of the Bhutanese community, who had resettled in Christchurch as refugees in 2008.

Tula Chhetri’s cousin, Guman Kadariya, said the family was still in shock.

“It’s an unbelievable accident that has happened. No one knows what’s going to happen next. It’s so sudden,” Mr Kadariya said.

“We’re going to miss them for ever and ever. They will be in our minds and memories for ever.”

Mr Kadariya flew to Christchurch yesterday but is yet to see Mr Chhetri or the daughter who also survived the crash.

He understood Mr Chhetri had

been moved from intensive care into a general ward at Christchurch Hospital but was unable to talk properly.

Mr Kadariya fondly remembered meeting Aron. “He was gorgeous, with his smiley face at all times. He was happy at all times.”

Mrs Chhetri was a “loving wife and caring mother”, who was always friendly and generous to people. She was also excited about the arrival of her son, who had three sisters.

The crash happened after the oldest daughter, Srijhana, 18, had been dropped off in Dunedin for university.

Friend and chairman of the Christchurch Bhutanese society, Akash Drukpa, said Mr Chhetri was a very careful driver. “It’s like a nonsmoker getting lung cancer.”

Mr Drukpa said the family was well known in Christchurch.

The community of 324 Bhutanese who had settled in the city would band together to help each other through the tragedy and was like a big family, Mr Drukpa said.

Getting familar with scarecrows Nine-year-old Leah Maw was among those taking part in week one of Methven’s Scarecrow Trail this week.

Scarecrows have popped up all around Methven, and the name of the game is to find them, and work out who they’re meant to be.

The theme to this year’s Scarecrow Trail is Disney characters, and it’s a community event to raise money for Methven Primary School.

Trail maps (which are also entry forms) are available at the Methven i-Site Visitor Centre, and entry is $8 per entry.

There’s about 30 scarecrows to find and name in all, and there will be prizes at the end for the most correct answers, and for the best scarecrow, as voted by those taking part in the trail.

The scarecrow trail runs through until April 30.

Something has to change on NZ’s roads Sue Newman

R

arely does a day go by that we don’t hear of another smash, another life needlessly lost; our roads are becoming death traps and it’s increasingly common to hear people say they’re now quite nervous about driving too far from home.

Tuesday night’s fatalities near Twizel saw a family torn apart as a mother and baby were killed and the husband and daughter were seriously injured. The smash involved two other vehicles, and while the occupants of these, the innocent victims, were injured, it appears they’ll live.

Where once the word accident was used to describe events where vehicles hit one another or trees or power poles. Clearly these are not accidents, they all have a cause, usually with one party at fault.

In the Twizel smash the vehicle carrying the people who were killed or seriously injured came out from a side road on to a state highway. The other vehicles were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

As with many accidents, it’s difficult to understand what has happened and why. Those answers are never likely to be known.

The Twizel tragedy is repeated day after day around New Zealand. We’ve always had road smashes, but it’s an enigma that at a time when the awareness of road safety has never been higher, when vehicles have never been safer, when road rules are tougher and driver’s licences are harder to get that accident rates continue to climb.

Yes, there are more cars on the roads and yes, a percentage of the smashes can be laid at the door of overseas drivers, but take those visitors out of the equation and it’s still a game of Russian roulette out there on the country’s roads.

And it doesn’t have to be the open road either. Ask anyone who lives in Tinwald and they’ll have a litany of horror stories and near misses as they’ve watched drivers make split second and, often, bad, decisions when they’re accessing the state highway. Most of us will have heart-lurching intersection stories to tell.

The positive is that the ongoing litany of road smashes is making most of us more cautious drivers, but the down side is that a nervous driver is not a good driver.

No – I’m not joking. If you’re going to have an opinion you might as well shout it from the rooftops than hide it in your bedside cabinet along with your copy of Fifty Shades.

I’ve lived in this town for 12 years and I get the whole rural service town thing. In the time that I have been here, six schools were earmarked for closure by the ministry. They are still here today.

Our numbers of children have increased. Every 24 children in this town brings in another teacher. Every teacher brings in an average of $55,000 of earnings.

The number of children has increased because the numbers of families have increased. They are here for work opportunities.

Those opportunities exist because of the strong rural sector.

I am very grateful to the rural community and recognise the extent to which they form the core of this town.

Those opportunities happen not by chance, but by a relationship between our council and business owners.

However, sometimes the milk can go sour, the eggs go rotten and the vegetables are left uneaten.

We need industry diversification in this district. Whether you agree or not, the council and ECan have put in place the mechanisms for a range of businesses and industries to set up here.

I for one am not going to bring in the welcome mat and ask them to go elsewhere.

Go to a netball court on the weekend, or the hockey turf, or almost any other team sport and count how many businesses sponsor our children.

I have seen children pull on a sports top and run on to the field with pride because their uniform is the same as everyone else’s, even though their family or school could not afford to buy them.

Every year 60 children look for sponsorship from local businesses as they take part in the Children’s Theatre productions.

This year will be no different.

Often the same businesses get asked time and time again.

In the 1970s and 1980s I grew up in the Manawatu.

At this time small towns in the Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay began losing their dairy factories, their meat works and then their banks and post offices.

People who could, moved away in search of work. Schools lost numbers and teachers lost jobs.

Money was no longer being spent in the town and small businesses slowly asphyxiated like beached dolphins.

One town resorted to performing Poi E which put them on the map, but it never brought the employment back.

Yes the debate about water use is very important and informed arguments for and against need to be put on the table.

Equally important is the attitude towards private businesses being welcomed in this town.

Get it wrong and we end up with some expensive lawns and footpaths known as the industrial estate. Get it right and you won’t have to perform in a video singing a song written to try to save the town.

Actually, if the town does need a song, I have one in mind. It’s based on a classic tune called My Old Man’s an All Black. The opening verse goes like this: “Now here’s a story full of woe I’m sure you’ve heard it before It’s all about a little town And their policy of closing the door…”

Hopes fade for survivors Ecuadoreans began burying loved ones felled by the country’s deadliest earthquake in decades, while hopes faded that more survivors will be found.

In the small town of Montecristi, near the port city of Manta, two children were among those buried Tuesday. They were killed with their mother while buying school supplies when the magnitude-7.8 quake struck Saturday night.

The funeral had to be held outside under a makeshift awning, because the town’s Roman Catholic church was unsafe from structural damage. Family members wailed loudly and one man fainted as the children were laid to rest in an aboveground vault.

Scenes of mourning multiplied all along Ecuador’s normally placid Pacific coastline, where the tremor flattened towns and killed hundreds. Funeral homes are running out of caskets to accommodate so many casualties, and local governments are paying to bring in caskets from other cities.

The government put the death toll at 507 late Tuesday, but officials expected more bodies to be found, with the Defense Department reporting 231 people still missing. The final toll could surpass casualties from earthquakes in Chile and Peru in the past decade. Among the dead were at least nine foreigners, including an American and two Canadians.

Even as grief mounted, there were glimmers of hope.

In several cities Tuesday rescuers with sniffer dogs, hydraulic jacks and special probes that can detect breathing from far away continued to search for survivors among the rubble. At least six were found in Manta early Tuesday.

TV break up not a fail by experts Married At First Sight psychologist John Aiken says the toxic pairing of Clare Verrall and Jono Pitman should not be marked as a fail for the experts.

The relationship psychologist told AAP that the couple, like all the pairings on the show, matched extremely well on all scientific fronts.

Aiken, psychologist and dating expert Mel Schilling and neuropsychotherapist Trisha Stratford were responsible for pairing off eight individuals after they underwent a series of tests.

Pitman and Verrall’s common traits were a sense of humour, family values, compassion, an ability to laugh at themselves and wanting to commit, said Aiken.

What the experts couldn’t predict was the way the pair aggressively tackled their disagreements on the Nine Network series.

“We matched according to science and in that respect we got that part right,” Aiken said.

“What we didn’t see that going in was the way these two fought, it was extremely volatile.

“They bring issues up harshly, they get personal ... you can see contempt with eyes rolling, put downs and a tone in the voice which can be patronising ... and that pattern of arguing is extremely toxic.”

Despite Pitman and Verrall failing to last the distance, Aiken says the social experiment is not a waste of time.

In fact, he believes that even if the remaining three marriages fall over, the individuals will be wiser about what it takes to have a successful relationship.

“It’s a win-win for them,” he said. “If they find true love through the matching process, then they have this wonderful relationship at the end of it, but if it doesn’t work out, the whole journey has allowed them to get a better understanding of themselves, so there is a take home either way.”

With Verrall and Pitman no longer on the series, viewers will find out next week if Erin and Bryce, Mark and Christie and Simone and Xavier remain together.

A fifth installment in the late Swedish crime writer Stieg Larsson’s best-selling Millennium series is under way and will have a “hardboiled” style, the author says. Writer David Lagercrantz said he aimed to use “an easier, more hard-boiled touch” in the new book.

“I feel like I have a tendency to be snobbish about my knowledge of popular science,” he told the daily Dagens Nyheter. “I showed signs of that in Millennium 4, where I wanted to write about black holes and all kinds of different things,” he added, referring to The Girl in the Spider’s Web published in August.

There will not be as many prime numbers in the new novel, and the style will be more like that of Raymond Chandler or the 2011 semi-autobiography of Swedish football star Zlatan Ibrahimovic that he co-wrote. The author said he was revising the first 200 pages as it was “so much harder to write hard-boiled fiction than I thought.”

The outspoken English broadcaster let rip at the Beckhams after David posted a video of Cruz, 11, performing the Cups routine made famous by Anna Kendrick in Pitch Perfect.

Speaking on the topic “is Cruz Beckham the new Bieber” Morgan argued the Beckhams should have kept their home movies private.

“You get these celebrity parents and they bang on about protecting their kids and privacy and so on, and there they are Instagramming this 11-year-old to gazillions of people,” Morgan told Good Morning Britain. “We all go ‘aww isn’t that cute?’ but actually there’s an 11-year-old boy being put out there to the world and I’m not sure that’s particularly good for him.”

The New Zealand dollar fell from a 10-month high yesterday as a dip in crude oil took the shine off commodity currencies and some traders took advantage of the kiwi’s 2 per cent gain in the past two days to sell down their holdings and lock in profits.

The kiwi fell to 70.06 US cents as at 5pm yesterday from as high as 70.54 cents overnight and from 69.96 cents on Tuesday. The trade-weighted index retreated to 73.46 from 73.78 earlier in the day and up from 73.06 on Tuesday.

Brent crude rose to as high as $US44.49 a barrel overnight, before retreating on news that Kuwaiti oil workers would end their strike in order to return to

talks with the government. Crude spiked on Monday after Iran rejected a proposal to limit production as part of efforts to underpin prices, which have fallen from US$110.65 a barrel two years ago.

The Kiwi, the Australian and Canadian dollars all rallied as commodity prices gained this week.

“The kiwi’s had a stellar run in the last few weeks. It’s now in a new range of 70 (US) cents to 72 cents,” said Imre Speizer, a strategist at Westpac Banking Corp.

“It’s just taking a breather. People who have put on the trade on the way up and think there’s an upside to 72 cents and bought it at 65-67 cents are thinking this is not a bad point to take profit.”

Dairy farmers wary despite recent hikes

By Michelle NelsoN aNd NZMe A hike in global dairy product prices this week delivered a glimmer of hope for dairy farmers – but it won’t reflect in this season’s farmgate payout, a Mid Canterbury dairy industry spokesperson says.

Dairy product prices increased for a second straight Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction overnight on Tuesday, posting the third gain in the eight auctions held so far in 2016.

The GDT price index rose 3.8 per cent to $US2263, up from $US2188 at the previous auction two weeks ago.

Some 21,206 tonnes of product was sold, down from 22,682 tonnes at the previous auction two weeks ago.

Whole milk powder climbed 7.5 per cent to $US2156 a tonne.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury dairy industry chairperson Jessie Chan-Dorman said it was positive news but farmers remain wary. “It won’t recover overnight, but it is encouraging to see an improvement,” she

said. However, industry groups are advising farmers to budget for modest milk prices, around the $4 mark, to continue next season.

“There’s no clear signal from the various banks as to what that might be so it would be wise to budget around a very conservative milk price,” Mrs Chan-Dorman said.

Tuesday’s upswing in whole milk prices was not on the radar of industry analysts.

“The lift in whole milk powder prices on GDT was considerably greater than the market had anticipated,” AgriHQ dairy analyst Susan Kilsby said in a note.

Based on NZX Dairy Futures prices, she expects the whole milk powder price will reach $US2450 a tonne by January 2017.

Following the GDT auction, AgriHQ forecasts a small lift in the farmgate milk price for next season.

The AgriHQ 2016-17 Farmgate Milk Price stands at $4.45 per kilogram milksolids, which compares with a 2015-16 esti-

mate for $4.09/kgMS. Fonterra’s current forecast is $3.90/kgMS for the 2015-16 season.

“The strong New Zealand dollar has not impacted our forecast for the 2015-16 season as the majority of the currency requirements will have now been hedged,” Ms Kilsby said.

However, if the New Zealand dollar remains strong, then this will erode returns in the 2016-17 season.

“The higher milk price forecast for next season is primarily driven by the expectation that dairy commodity prices will continue to rise in the coming months.”

Danone, the world’s No.1 yoghurt maker, expects milk prices to rise this year.

“In 2016, Danone also anticipates upward trends in the cost of its main strategic raw materials,” the Paris-based company said on Tuesday.

“Milk prices are thus expected to edge up, with variations from one geographical area to the next,” Danone said.

Cull dairy cattle are still in demand.

Dairy farm prices still under pressure Low milk prices continue to put pressure on dairy farm prices, the Real Estate Institute of NZ (REINZ) figures show.

Median sales price per hectare for dairy farms fell to $33,897 for the three months to March, compared with $37,761 in the same period last year and $36,687 in the three months to February this year.

The median price per hectare in the three months to March was $27,202 compared with $27,957 in the same period last year across all farms, according to REINZ.

REINZ rural spokesman Brian Peacocke said lower dairy prices had influenced farm prices, but an outbreak of facial eczema in the Waikato and Taranaki had also played a part.

ASB Bank rural economist Nathan Penny said the data showed prices responding to very low farmgate milk prices, but there were pockets of strength.

“In the less dairy-dominated regions where land is not the greatest for dairy farming – Northland for example – prices have come off, whereas in the more tradition-

al areas of Waikato, Taranaki and Canterbury, prices have held up much better,” Mr Penny said.

“Prices are holding up quite well, particularly considering the low milk price,” he said.

The REINZ data follows the Reserve Bank’s “stress test” last month which showed the banking system was robust enough to handle the current dairy sector downturn.

The bank said low global milk prices were generating significant financial pressure for dairy farmers, with around one half of the

dairy sector experiencing a second consecutive season of operating losses.

Mr Peacocke said the data indicated an easing in sales volumes for most categories of rural property, with the exception of horticulture.

“While in general terms the dairy sector is subdued, isolated sales of good quality farms at very good prices do reflect optimism in the longer-term future of the industry,” he said.

In the regions, Northland continued to receive buyer inquiry

for dairy farms, but limited supply and sales made pricing difficult.

There was evidence of banks requiring higher levels of equity from Northland farmers. There had been steady sales of grazing stocks and strong activity in lower-value properties suitable for planting manuka for the honey industry in Northland.

In Hawke’s Bay there had been limited activity due to a shortage of property. There was conjecture around the proposed Ruataniwha dam and its likely impact on prices.

Lamb prices continue to improve Prime lamb prices continue to strengthen in line with recent schedule increases, at this week’s Tinwald stock sale.

Heavy shorn lambs made $104$115, medium weights $93-$102 and lighter lambs, $78-$91.

Prime ewe prices were also stronger, with heavy shorn sheep fetching $81-$97, medium weights $72-$80 and lighter sheep, $56-$66.

Prices also firmed in the store pens, with a larger yarding this week.

Forward lambs realised $74$79 and medium weights, $65$71.

Demand for manufacturing cows remained steady. Heavier cull dairy cows fetched $1.35$1.40kg and lighter cows $1.20$1.30.

Lest we forget . . .

Annual festival on again

T

his is being written one week before Anzac Day. Anzac Day commemorations are always important, this year’s especially so as it’s the 100th anniversary of the first time this special day was recognised.

Next week Anzac Day will be commemorated in various ways and no doubt the brave people who served our country in the terrible conflict which engulfed the world 100 years ago would be glad we acknowledge the sacrifices they and subsequent defenders of our freedom made.

Keeping the memory alive is so important and we can thank people like the RSA and others for that. While it is fitting that traditional formal ceremonies take place, it’s also good that other forms of remembrance blend in too. It’s exactly what those we remember would want.

Amongst the activities next week will be two actionpacked days at Rangitata Island Aerodrome where respect-

ful remembrance will be combined with good old fashioned fun.

To quote the organisers: “We’re talking several World War One battle re-enactments with live action, vintage weapons and machinery, blank bullets and pyrotechnic simulated explosions!

And that’s just for starters”.

There’ll be free family joyrides in vintage cars, the hiss of steam from traction engines and replica trenches complete with authentic weapons and sleeping quarters to wander through.

graphs and displays of locals who served in World War One. Refreshments, plus plenty of other simple, fresh fare will be on sale in an authentic mess tent and local musicians will be performing songs from bygone days.

The organisers go on to say “Bring along the whole family and get hands on! Make a day or a weekend of it, bring a picnic or indulge in the delicious offerings at an array of eateries around the grounds”.

Or maybe do both!

was during World War One that the use of vehicles and flying machines came into their own in a military sense and changed the way operations took place.

The Rangitata Island Aerodrome will host several planes and people who have an interest in military vehicles will be out in force for their Anzac weekend.

People like Cliff Begg and Derrick Cullimore who just three weeks ago had their historic military vehicles at the hugely successful Wheat and Wheels Rally.

Replica gun maker Trevor Cullimore will be there too.

Especially at this time of year we see images of conditions endured by service personnel during World War One in the media.

The event at Rangitata will provide an opportunity to both remember and to get a feel for what it was really like, thanks to the expertise of Hamish Bruce and his brilliant team.

Gates open 9am-4pm Saturday and Sunday April 23-24 and there is a small admission charge.

Time just flies when you’re having fun T

here’s an old saying about time, and having fun.

On April 18, 15 years ago the first motoring stories in their current format appeared in this newspaper.

Previous to that Roger Hart had been writing for around five years.

If ever we needed proof that

times flies when you’re having fun, this has been it!

And while on the subject my sister-in-law (actually the inlaw bit is merely a technicality) Julie Luxton would agree about that old adage – this date is her birthday.

t’s almost here.

Before this fortnightly column makes its next appearance Wheels Week Plus 2016 will be under way.

The first events are on Saturday April 30 and after that it’s full-on fun right through to Sunday, May 15.

On the first weekend alone there are six events taking place.

There’ll be action galore at the Speedway New Zealand title which starts on Saturday and no doubt some impressive speeds will be recorded at the Ashburton Car Club Standing Quarter Mile Sprints the same day.

Sunday morning will see the parishioners of St Andrew’s Presbyterian parish celebrating the wheel at their 10am service in their church on Havelock Street.

The annual Plains Rotary Club Classic Car Run is also on Sunday.

Each year that run features a particular marque and much to the delight of local enthusiasts Neil and Ngaire Holland and Trevor and Morag Cullimore, Triumphs have been picked this time around. Neil and Ngaire will be driving the Triumph TR7 which they have owned since new. As well as being able to include their Triumph TR8 with the featured cars, the run will have special significance for Trevor and Morag.

To date they and just one other entrant have the distinction of being the only people who have been on each of these annual runs since their inception over 20 years ago.

The Canterbury Motorcycle Clubs centenary vintage, MX and Club TT is another Sunday event as is the second day of the Speedway New Zealand title.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club: We have had quite a busy time over the last three weeks. We hosted the Canterbury open doubles and Triples the first week-end of April. This tournament used to be held in Christchurch, and hasn’t been held since 2009. 11 of our players took part against some very tough competition and showed up very well even though most didn’t take away a major prize.

Richard Browne (Ash) and Neville Frost (Dune) were runners up in the doubles championship, and Rewa and Stephen Kyle were 5th equal in this section. The Triples was won by Richard Browne (Ash), Neville Frost (Dune) and Brian Westerbeek (Chch). A very successful event which the hosting of will be shared around.

April 9 saw 13 players from Ashburton take part in the autumn triples at Ascot, and the Championship runners up were Mick Little (Ash) and Grace Kangjuchoi, and Pauline Fowlds.

Plate runners up were: Irene Herron (Ash) Ellen Pithie (Ashburton) and Tony Wilkinson (Pap) Third: Wil Nuberg (Ash) Karen Bensdorp (Ash) and Art Vernon Papanui.

Bowl winners: Betty King (Ash), Marion Harrison (Ash) and David Scottorn.

Last week-end we held our Presidents Mixed Drawn Triples and the Trophy was won by: Richard Browne, Wil Nuberg and Betty King.

Runners up were: Neville Bensdorp, Jan Guilford and Marion Harrison.

Our thanks go to all those who helped at the two tournaments we hosted. It was also good to see all of our newer players take part in our local competition, and to see them play so well.

Travel Section: The Travel Section is planning a Christchurch Rebuild Tour on Sunday May 1, leaving Ashburton at 9.30. Other details are on the noticeboard at their Club, or phone Dennis 308 3471 or Marion at 302-2733.

The annual meeting will be on Monday 16th May. A good attendance is needed for the continuation of this section.

A recent trip to the Rangiora and Kaiapoi areas was enjoyed by members.

Ashburton Musical Club Prelude to 2016 was the theme for the first concert of the year held at the Sinclair Centre on April 9. Members were told of the much needed repairs carried out on the Steinway piano, after receiving grants from the Creative Community Scheme and the Rotary Club which helped cover costs. Ashburton Pakeke Lions Seventy members, partners and visitors from Methven Lions attended the April meeting. Congratulations were extended to Jim Allison and Daphne on reaching 60 years of marriage. The recent Charity Auction proved to be another worthwhile event on the Pakeke calendar. Although proceeds were down on previous years the quality of goods donated were of reasonable standard and the number of prospective buyers was pleasing. Proceeds will be distributed

Organiser Lion Arthur Pawsey thanked members for their volunteer input over several days of preparation while President Ray commented that comradeship and fellowship throughout was a high point. The Over 80’s function will be held on May 5 and the trip to Christchurch and the Court Theatre is well supported.

Volunteers were requested to assist with Wheels Week duties.

Guest speaker for the evening was local personality Dan Lysaght, a businessman, caterer and a jet boating enthusiast. The story of his entry into the catering business in the North Island, firstly as an inhouse function centre, then extending to operating a very successful Out Catering business. Eventually he returned to his home town bringing his successful operation of All Fed Up with his policy to deliver good quality and adequate quantity. Not only is he a caterer par excellence but also an enthusiastic jet boater, teaming up with local personalities. Dan related many of his more notable experiences in marathon jet boating in NZ and internationally.

Tail Twister Ron collected a number of fines for misdemeanours. The Lions Ladies next craft day, May 9 at Ina Diver’s home.

Coronation Target Shooting Club A coaching session using the electronic “scatt” units had immediate effect with Susan Peattie a huge personal best and Richard Pearce adding to a list of solid scores. Heather Ross has made huge advances and Shanaia Harrison-Lee is coming to grips shooting without a rest. Creative Fibre There was a good attendance at the April meeting with 33 women. In reports it was noted that the day of Back to Basics had gone well, with younger women showing interest in what we were presenting in fibre craft. The Darield Open Creative Fibre day saw many of our ladies attending.

One of the events which interested many was a lady from Nga Tapu weaving a baby’s basket which would take a baby and have it between mum and dad in bed if there was a shortage of sleeping arrangements. Baby would be safe from being rolled on. Nga Tapu said they were the Maori Plunket.

Many interesting things to learn. No entrance charge. The club has some looms for sale. It was noted that if an exhibit is shown at a regional festival it can be shown at the next National Festival but not the other way around.

Next meeting a committee will be set up to look at hiring a shop for a week in town so we can show the public what we do and have items for sale.

Allan and Sue Baird

Lions Club of Hinds & Districts Family, friend and neighbour welfare was the topic at the April Tea Meeting of the Lions Club of Hinds & Districts when Allan and Sue Baird from Rural Support Ashburton spoke on the importance of communication in difficult times. Both started by explaining the origins and aims of their organisation, then detailed the considerable support network that is now available to rural people.

Pamphlets, brochures and a Quick Response Checklist were handed out before Lion Clarke Taylor passed a vote of thanks and invited them to stay and enjoy the delightful meal prepared by ladies from Hinds Scouts. pictures. After the official meeting Jeanette Maxwell demonstrated needle work craft in making compact articles.

Many of the ladies gathered around and had a go.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Probus Club President Bernie Tutty presided over the April meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Probus Club and welcomed some visitors. The National Anthem was sung, and then members stood for a minute’s silence of the passing of past member Shirley Whiting. Birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated. Alex Ching told of the excellent shuttle service to the Hospital from a parking area in Deans Avenue.

The recent bus trip to Mayfield had been very successful, so much so that member Ann McKay modelled a dress she had bought at the second hand shop.

This will be suitable for her favourite hobby – ball room dancing. She showed several dresses that she wears for the dancing, the main criteria is that they can go through the washing machine.

It was difficult to tell the difference between the $700 dress and the $2 dress.

Every year Ann goes to Norfolk Island to dance there.

After morning tea the main speaker, Hazel Redmond was introduced and she told members of her life. She was head girl at Ashburton Borough School in 2008, and then went to St Margaret’s College, where she excelled academically and played lots of sport. It all fell apart in 2010 when she became seriously ill, starting with a sore throat and fever.

Hazel was transferred to the Christchurch Hospital, and it was found that the virus had damaged the membranes into the brain.

After three weeks in hospital, she did not remember much and realised she would never be the same again. A walk to the mail box left her exhausted, many things she had to relearn again. In 2011 she went back to school, and her interests were Art and Photography. The Make-A-Wish Foundation were very helpful, and granted her wish of meeting fashion designer, Karen Walker, who became Hazel’s mentor. The Foundation has granted 2000 wishes to people since it first started in 1986.

In 2015 Hazel competed in the Queenstown Half Marathon and raised $6,000 for the Foundation. It was tough mentally and physically. Hazel now has a photo shop in the Arcade and has learnt to make the most of every day.

General business followed with reports from Projects, Social, Membership, Youth and other directors and the unveiling of the club’s new Honours Board. 1st Vice President Alan Johnston announced his new Board for his year as President, starting in July.

Tail Twister Peter Lowe increased his fines tally by calling out a surprising number of members who had lost their house or car keys in the last month. Most blamed someone else, but everyone knew it had just been another senior moment. The last word was given by Lion Dave Thomson allowing President David Keeley to wrap up another very informative and entertaining evening.

Mid Canterbury Men’s Probus New President Doug Anderson welcomed over 80 members to our April meeting. Two new members were also welcomed into the club. John Waugh provided a mini-talk describing prostate cancer. He explained all the symptoms of prostate enlargement and the various options available to overcome it. He stressed that all men over 40 should have an annual prostate check up.

Following morning tea Alan Tweed introduced Warren Jowett, our main speaker. Until recently Warren has given guided birding and eco-tours from his Staveley home. He gave us an illustrated talk of a three-week trip he made to Iceland. Using 4 wheel drive vehicles, his group toured the whole island, photographing the various sights ranging from volcanic rock formations to braided rivers, glaciers and abundant bird life.

Russell Small thanked our speaker and the meeting closed with the national anthem.

MSA Outdoor Bowls Hi everyone; She Bee and Win are back to report on end of season activities.

Saturday last was closing day for MSA Bowls, the day was beautiful and it was lovely to see a good gathering of members and visitors to share the fun and enjoyment of the occasion.

Thank you to the organisers and especially Guildford (still spelt with a D) Lane for the expert cooking of sausages and onions ably helped by Tony Inwood, Thank you to Maurice for a well presented green, which bought many favourable compliments.

After his welcoming speech club captain Dave requested those present to stand and observe one minute’s silence to pay tribute to the passing of long time member Ray Milner. Ray was a bowling member for many years before retiring to Australia.

Plains Ladies Probus Club President Wilma Breading welcomed 70 members to the April Meeting, apologies and minutes of the last meeting were read. Graeme Pearson has been elected as President of the Probus Association. Subs are now due for the coming year. “Hunt for the Wilder people” is the movie on the 4th May at 11 am at the Regent Theatre, a movie not to be missed. Four members attended the N S I P meeting. Pat Gibson spoke about travelling up to Wellington to the Tattoo held recently. They travelled by bus and had 50 steps to climb up to their accommodation. Wilma did some story telling until morning tea.

Danny Lysaght was our main speaker, born in Ashburton on Xmas Day he worked at Dalgetys, Stewart and Holland then went into the food business in the North Island. They bought a lovely old house which was a run as a function centre. Catered for buses, skiers and did outside catering also feed 600 people in marque.

Returned to Christchurch and then to Ashburton and started “All Fed up” business. They travel all around the Island catering for weddings, races, farming events etc. Danny is also involved in jet boating. Back in 1980 with Mark Cromie, Laurie Street in the boat “Commodore” they won the world Jetboat marathon.

Vera thanked Danny for his talk. Also would like to thank Sandy for her time as President and Committee as was omitted last month. May meeting on 23rd.

Waireka Croquet Club Another 10 days until croquet finishes for the season – and what a full on season it has been. On the 23rd March a good contingent of golf croquet players from Waireka dressed in their “Sunday best” - ranging from a couple of Highlanders in kilts to a very messy baby, and a couple of Playboy bunnies – to attend the annual tournament in Geraldine where dressing up is compulsory. A lot of fun was had and two of our pairs played in the final – the victors being Eva Kircher and Sue Lamb. Congratulations team.

Following hard on the heels of Geraldine the Interclub Teams in both codes were held at Aorangi. No accolades for Waireka this season – the best we could do was runners-up in the Association code but a very pleasant time was enjoyed.

The week after the teams event Westend held their classic tournament again for both codes and Waireka’s Raylene Phillips managed to secure a win being lucky enough to be paired with a golf croquet player who just did what he was told. Thank you David Brown – you will be a very good player very soon.

You will have seen the victory the Mount Hutt teams had at the NZ Secondary Schools tournament coming first and second. Carolyn Fordyce has done a tremendous job with these lads and congratulations must go her as well as the teams.

Edmund Fordyce is now in Florida playing in the worlds – a tough battle. We wish him well.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Hinds Hinds Institute met on March 23 in the Davison Room of the Hinds Community Centre. President Rosa Bennett welcomed 13 members then read a story from the Home and Country.

Following the Ode and Aspirations, members reported on the Positive Aging Expo and the Merino Fashion Parade which raised the balance of the cost of the domain seat. Visiting of patients in Ward Six at Ashburton was discussed as was the food items to be donated for the annual Hinds Anzac parade morning tea, and as the April meeting day is just after this it was decided to go on an outing.

Birthday honours were accorded to Janice, Coyla, Gwen and Val and a parcel was given to each from the birthday box.

The annual meeting followed with Betty reading a wonderful report of the year’s work in the community. Rosa also gave her president’s report and thanked everyone for their year’s work. The elections resulted in the incumbents being voted in: President, Rosa Bennett; Vice president, Valmai McKenzie; Secretary, Betty Wilson; Treasurer, Ruth Sheppard. Cups

At the recent AGM of the Rakaia WI, retiring president Frances Nelson welcomed all members and the visiting buddy Lorraine.

Frances’ Annual report showed that although the club was small in numbers it was in very good heart with a very comprehensive programme, which included speakers such as the editor of the Rakaia News, Birthright and Julie Boag the beautician. As well, Meals on Wheels, peggy squares for Ashburton Hospital, posy bowls for Ward 6, baking, clothing and a great deal of fund-raising during the year. Competitions, raffles and a bottle auction were held at meetings in a warm and friendly atmosphere, a hallmark of the club.

President Joy welcomed eight members to our March meeting. Aspirations were recited and a vote of sympathy were extended to a member. The motto: “laughter is the brush that sweeps away the cobwebs” was read by Colleen Cockburn, and the raffles were won by Margaret Jamieson and Colleen Vander-Eik. Before the annual meeting was held, afternoon tea was served.

Wakanui Women’s Institute March meeting was held at the Wakanui Hall. The roll call was some memories of an early hospital visit.

Many members’ first visit they recalled was to have their first child.

The monthly display was something medical which showed some very old and interesting instruments. Members were thanked for the donated gifts which are to go to Birthright.

The guest speaker was Paramedic, Andrew Beckley from St John. Andrew talked of the training he had done and the work he does for Mid Canterbury community while on duty. Andrew gave us helpful hints in the case of emergencies.

The meeting closed with serving of supper.

Wakanui

Our well-attended March meeting was held in the St Paul’s Church Lounge. The motto was: “Men build the houses, but women make the home”. Our roll calls were stamps and tops for ACWW, and food items to be given to Presbyterian Support. Both of these were well supported.

Our general business included appointing delegates for the Federation AGM and final arrangements made for the catering for the same event.

Our speaker for the afternoon was Judith Lilley, who spoke of her work with the Salvation Army Food Bank, plus her other roles including chaplaincy at Employment Plus, and being a friend of the court. At the Foodbank, she works very closely with Budget Advice, and finds that the need for food parcels often leads to the realisation that people need help in other areas of their life as well.

After her very informative talk, Judith was thanked by Ellie Leak, and presented with a small gift. A very welcome afternoon tea followed the meeting.

McKay, best known for overseeing the Reds’ electric backline in their 2011 Super Rugby triumph, signed with the Steelers after assisting Tonga at last year’s World Cup. The former Randwick winger, 49, spent 15 months as Wallabies backs coach in 2013 and `14 but lost his job after Ewen McKenzie’s controversial exit that saw Michael Cheika take over. “It’s a really exciting time to become involved in Japanese rugby following the success by the national team at the World Cup and also through the inclusion of the Sunwolves in Super Rugby,” he said.

Three teams share the lead with just two weeks to run in the autumn round of Terrace Downs Resort Fast 4s.

Heading into Tuesday night’s matches at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre, ConAid’s Connor Brosnahan and Aidan Mitchell were leading, but they lost 2-1 to TKJ, while Last Resort beat MatJade. Those results mean ConAid, TKJ and Last Resort are now all on seven points at the top of the leaderboard.

ConAid’s night started well,

with Mitchell beating Koji Kawamata in straight sets, but TKJ’s Jason Feutz’s recent good form continued with a win over Brosnahan, to even the ledger heading into the doubles.

Feutz and Kawamata then combined skilfully in the doubles, to win in straight sets and clinch the tie.

Hawks, Spurs take 2-0 leads Atlanta and San Antonio took imposing 2-0 leads in their opening-round play-off series with emphatic victories over Boston and Memphis yesterday.

The Hawks held the Celtics to the lowest-scoring first quarter in the playoffs since the NBA went to the shot clock, building a 21-point lead and holding on despite an ugly shooting performance of their own for an 89-72 victory and a strong hold on their Eastern Conference series.

Al Horford and Kyle Korver led Atlanta with 17 points apiece, but this game was essentially decided in the first 12 minutes.

The Hawks started 9 of 13 from the field, knocking down six from beyond the 3-point arc. Korver made four from long range, a big turnaround from a 1-of-10 performance in Game 1 that didn’t include any 3s. Atlanta led 24-3 just 6 1-2 minutes into the game.

Even after failing to score the rest of the period, the Hawks still led 24-7 heading to the second.

Shaking off a dismal performance in the playoff opener, Korver swished four 3-pointers in the

opening minutes to propel Atlanta to a stunning 21-point lead before many fans had settled into their seats Tuesday night. There wasn’t much doubt after that.

“We all have pride, right?” said Korver, who went 1 of 10 on Saturday and missed all seven of his 3-point attempts. “I wanted to come out and play better the second game.”

As good as Korver and the Hawks were in the early going, this one will be remembered more for the Celtics’ grisly start.

“I don’t know what it is,” said Boston’s Jae Crowder, looking a bit shell-shocked after scoring just two points on 1-of-9 shooting, “but we’ve got to change something.”

The Chappell Hadlee one day series dates and venues have been confirmed for Australia next summer. The Black Caps will face the world champions in three one dayers in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne on December 4, 6 and 9. It’s the first time the trophy will be contested in Australia since 2008-09 and is part of a commitment between the two nations to stage six ODI series over a four-year-period. The two sides will play a return leg in New Zealand in 2017.

Mayhew in hospital Warriors doctor John Mayhew collapsed after an exercise class in Auckland on Tuesday night and is in an induced coma. A family spokesperson has confirmed Mayhew had a cardiac arrest as a result of a heart problem. He was successfully resuscitated and is now in an induced coma in intensive care in North Shore Hospital. He’s in a stable condition.

The family spokesperson said there would be no further comment at this stage. Mayhew, who was the All Blacks doctor for 15 years, on the sidelines for 131 tests, before spending most of the last decade at the Warriors, became an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit for his services to sports medicine in the New Year’s Honours List. Mayhew has worked in squash, world cross championships and the Commonwealth Games team of 1990. He is on the board of Drug Free Sport New Zealand.

Olympic rowing champion Joe Sullivan is one of five grinders who will be battling it out for a place on Team New Zealand’s race boat for next year’s America’s Cup challenge. As the Herald revealed in October last year, Sullivan, who paired up with Nathan Cohen to win gold in the double sculls at the London Olympics, had been training with Team NZ under what chief operating officer Kevin Shoebridge termed a “loose arrangement”. This month that role became official, with Sullivan named in the Kiwi syndicate’s wider sailing team. To date, most of Sullivan’s training with the team has been land-based while he juggles fulltime work as a firefighter in Auckland. But as part of his on-going sailing education, he has accompanied the team on on the water lately.

Injured Ranger ‘gutted’

Tuipuloto commits to Blues until 2019

Rene Ranger, who will see a surgeon today about his seasonending injured knee ligament, has spoken of his disappointment for himself and also North Harbour, the province he signed with last year but won’t play for until next year at the earliest.

The Blues midfielder ruptured the ACL in his left knee in his team’s 23-18 victory over the Sharks at Eden Park and is facing a long and mentally tough lay-off after recovering from neck surgery last year.

That operation ruled him out for North Harbour after his return from club rugby in France, and his latest surgery will end all chance of him playing for them this year. His next involvement in the game is likely to be in next year’s Super Rugby pre-season, but he vowed to help Steve Jackson’s Harbour team off the field, if they would allow it.

“I’m gutted for them, especially

after what happened last year,” Ranger said.

Not surprisingly, North Harbour trumpeted the signing of Northlander Ranger last year after his return from Montpellier, but he could only watch as they finished fifth of seven teams in the Championship.

After his surgery Ranger will turn his attention to rehabilitating his injury, but also the future in general. He said he would apply for a heavy vehicle driver’s licence as he was interested in farming.

“I have to keep my mind active,” said Ranger, who didn’t think the injury was that serious at first. The 29-year-old was hoping for the best, but the Blues medical staff diagnosed the injury the day after the match and it was confirmed by a scan on Monday.

“It’s not great,” Blues coach Tana Umaga said. “He missed a

Sally’s perfect shot Ashburton Golf Club ladies’ vicecaptain Sally Lemon scored the perfect shot on number eight on her home course on Tuesday.

Lemon, who was playing with Allison Hunt and Fairlie Matsinger, was shocked to achieve her first hole in one and was undecided as what to do with the lucky ball.

“It bounced before the green and rolled, I bent down to pick my tee and looked up and saw it was still rolling and went in to the hole,” she said.

“I’m not sure what to do with it (the ball) yet, I’ve not thought that far ahead.”

Blues lock Patrick Tuipulotu has re-committed to the Blues and New Zealand Rugby until the end of 2019.

Tuipulotu, 23, who played seven tests for the All Blacks in 2014, said the next World Cup in Japan was a long-term goal after missing last year’s after his seasonending hip problem, for which he needed surgery.

“I am really enjoying my rugby at the Blues and I am learning a lot playing under Tana [Umaga].

“I like being based at home right now. Next year the Lions are coming to New Zealand which would be great to be part of. Injury meant I missed a chance to play in the World Cup, and so long term I would love to be at the next one.”

Tuipulotu, who has missed the last two matches for the Blues with a fractured hand, will be available for their next match against the Rebels at Eden Park next weekend.

Tuipulotu joins current All Blacks Julian Savea, Brodie Retallick, Dane Coles and Aaron Smith who have all committed to New Zealand Rugby through until 2019, while a bulk of leading players have also committed through until 2018 and 2017.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said: “Patrick re-signing through to 2019 is great news. He’s a player who we feel has huge potential and we are expecting him to play a major role for the All Blacks over this period and even beyond.

“He was unfortunate last year with his injury to miss the Rugby World Cup but clearly has the desire, drive and passion to get to the next one.”

College basketball gears up The secondary school basketball season gets under way soon for Ashburton College’s five basketball sides.

The senior boys will again play in the Christchurch-based Thompson Trophy competition, while a new contest for senior girls has been introduced the same night.

Canterbury Basketball said the Thompson Trophy was so successful in its inaugural year last year it wanted to raise the profile for girls’ basketball in the same way. Double-header games will be scheduled where possible with

both teams playing teams from the same school.

Ashcoll will also enter junior boys and a senior boys’ B team in South Canterbury Basketball’s weekly Friday night competition, while the junior girls will play in a schools’ competition in Christchurch on a Friday.

The senior boys A, coached again by Pip Johnston, have already begun their season with a promotion game against St Bede’s last week. Ashcoll won the encounter 88-75 and will be one of 10 senior boys’ sides in division one of the Thompson Trophy,

where they will come up against powerhouse sides like Middleton Grange, Cashmere and Burnside.

Johnston said his side contained mostly Year 12 and 11 players, but they were capable of footing it against many of the sides in division one. Middleton Grange last year had junior Tall Black Sam Timmins and other players bound this year for US college sides.

He said their strength was in their all-round ability and teamwork.

The side trains twice a week, with Thompson Trophy games on a Tuesday night; they will also

play in the Mid Canterbury senior men’s competition.

Johnston said their season would culminate in the South Island secondary schools’ basketball tournament in early September. The event, which last year attracted 22 teams, will be played in Ashburton this year at the EA Networks Centre.

The girls, under the guidance of Andrew Shepherd, will have their SI tournament in Christchurch.

Shepherd also has a young group, bolstered by New Zealand under 16 player Ashlee Strawbridge. Strawbridge is among a

number of Year 10s in the side.

He said the girls’ new Tuesday night competition, the Whelan Trophy, was exciting and a great opportunity to attract more young people to the sport.

“The girls are in a rebuilding phase but have plenty of talent to remain competitive in this new competition.”

The junior girls, coached by Mark “Roasty” Douglas, will have their SI tournament in Dunedin later in the year, along with the junior boys, coached by Randall Anderson.
