Ashburton needs to ensure it does not lose its special character businesses as inner town rentals rise in the wake of the Canterbury earthquakes rebuild, an Ashburton businessman warns. As new retail and office complexes were completed and tenancies let, Grow Mid Canterbury chief executive Rob Brawley said Ashburton’s central business area would become a vastly different place, but he cautioned that the small retailer must not be squeezed out. “The town centre needs to be affordable for smaller retailers too. They’re the businesses that gives the town its special character, it ensures we’re not just like every other town.”

Two new developments are planned around Cass Street – the multi-owner $40 million Eastfield project that will include car parking, a medical centre, hospitality areas and retail is planned for completion within five years and work on another multi-use development on the corner of Cass and Burnett Street could possibly begin this year.
