Ashburton women did suffragette Kate Sheppard proud yesterday when they gathered, marched and planted roses and camellia to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the passing of the1893 Electoral Act. That act changed the lives of every woman in New Zealand, giving them the right to vote alongside their men. Sheppard and the women who fought alongside her for equal rights ultimately achieved far more than they could ever have dreamed. Once women were finally able to vote their world began to open up. As part of yesterday’s celebrations about 200 women gathered in Ashburton’s Baring Square to celebrate, to remember and to give thanks. Gaining the right to vote was an achievement that came after a long, hard battle in which Shep-

pard and her fellow suffragettes put out a call to every woman in New Zealand to put an end to lives that saw them live as second-rate citizens, their rights dictated by men. The women listened. There was a mood for change and women responded in huge numbers, some supported by their husbands, many secretly defying the demands of husbands who did not want change. Petitions circulated throughout the country and 32,000 women signed their names, clearing the way for the Electoral Act 1893 to be passed. This gave all women in New Zealand the right to vote and opened the door to ongoing change and a radical improvement in the way women could live their lives. In Ashburton the 125th anniversary of suffrage has been marked by a number of events, but yesterday was the official celebration organised by the district’s Suffrage

This group was made up of representatives from Age Concern, Ashburton Museum, County Lions, Inner Wheel, Mid Canterbury Rural Women New Zealand, Women’s Institute and Zonta Club of Ashburton. After gathering in Baring Square the women, many of them dressed in the style of the 1890s, and most wearing purple and white, were led by several pipers into the Ashburton Domain where a Kate Sheppard rose, donated by Ashburton Inner Wheel was planted in the domain rose garden A second planting then took place of two Kate Sheppard camellia in a garden near the domain car park. Those remembering Sheppard ranged from women in their 80s down to pre-schoolers, with two students from Ashburton College and two from Mount Hutt College forming part of the official Inner Wheel tree planting group.

For decades to come, visitors to Ashburton’s Community House will have a permanent reminder of the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand. While she could find no record of women in her family having signed the suffrage petition, Advance Ashburton executive officer Sandi Wood said she was proud to be part of a ceremony that celebrated an anniversary that changed the lives of women forever. On behalf of the Advance Ashburton Foundation, Wood planted a Kate Sheppard camellia in the community house garden as part of raft of celebrations across New Zealand marking the suffrage anniversary. “We give thanks today to Kate and her crew for their tenacious approach and their courage and bravery to not give up until women gained the right to vote,” Wood said. Today’s women owed so much to the women who spoke on behalf of a new generation, women who were tired of being told that attempting to do anything outside the home was unwomanly, she said. The suffrage petition was signed by almost 32,000 people and when the petition sheets were laid end on end they measured 270 metres. “Not only did this monumental moment in history change the

St John health shuttles are helping thousands access health care nationwide, but too many areas are going without. A social impact report released by the organisation on Tuesday shows a burgeoning need for coordinated, free or very low-cost health transport services at a national level to support New Zealand’s ageing population. St John Director of Community Health Services Sarah Manley called for more support from other non-government organisations and the government to improve equity of access into the future. “In the 2017 calendar year, St John invested $2.76 million into provision of 54 health shuttles on the road, completing almost 75,000 client trips,” Manley said. “Forty-six per cent of clients said they had no other option to get to their health appointments. That’s tens of thousands of GP visits, therapy appointments and scheduled surgeries that otherwise wouldn’t happen, or would present financial challenges to patients and their families.” St John was calling for a national symposium on community transport to take place within the next two years, and intend to take the conversation to Parliament with

This service improves accessibility, independence, and most importantly, improves health outcomes in our communities,” Hanley said. Ashburton is one of 34 locations which benefits from having the free service. It operates five days per week, is usually full each day, and was introduced in the town in 2012. Among the clients is Marie Hibbert. The Ashburton resident said she is not able to drive a car for

medical reasons, and uses the service four to five times per year. Hibbert said accessing medical services in Christchurch would cost her so much more without the shuttle, to which she always gave a $25 donation. For example, it cost $175 oneway for a taxi back from Christchurch, and using the tour bus service necessitated an overnight stay in the city. Among the shuttle drivers is Raewyn Harborne. “Every time that we take people through to Christchurch, you are hearing people’s positive comments about the service, it reinforces every trip we do,” Harborne said.

He also advertised for a fill-in maths teacher in term 1 and received no applications at all. “It’s particularly difficult in those specialist areas like maths, physics and technology,” he said. “We’re fortunate that we have a couple of local, retired staff who are capable maths teachers and can fill-in – but that can only be short-term.” The number of people applying for jobs here contrasts starkly with the beginning of his previous job in Whangamata, where Preece said he would receive 20 or 30 applications for every position. In his nine years there, he saw the number of applicants drop to “four or five” for every position. “The number of secondary

teachers has just diminished,” he said. Clement said primary schools in Mid Canterbury are often contacted by overseas applicants seeking employment from countries like India and Fiji, but applicants must meet minimum standards of qualification. For both primary and secondary schools, an ageing workforce is seeing more teachers enter retirement, while the number of people enrolling in teacher training has dropped around 40 per cent in six years. Preece said he felt the lower number of applicants was partially due to the fact education is “financially, not as rewarding as it should be”. But he also felt that people’s negative perceptions of the job could be a factor. “Through what people see in the media, it is more frequently being seen as a stressful occupation … but it is a hugely rewarding career.”

Time is running out for people to enter a team into the Welcoming Communities Futsal Tournament Extravaganza, which is being held at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre next month. New Zealand Football has joined forces with the Ashburton District Council’s Welcoming Communities co-ordinator, Immigration New Zealand (INZ), and Mainland Football to deliver the futsal tournament and festival in a bid to foster connections between established locals and new arrivals in the area. Futsal, meaning indoor football, was FIFA’s official five-a-side indoor football (soccer) game and anyone could give it a go. The extravaganza and tournament wasn’t so much about winning, as it was about participating and celebrating our district’s diversity. The event was part of INZ’s wider Welcoming Communities initiative, being piloted across the Ashburton District, and recognised that communities were healthier, happier, and more productive when newcomers were welcomed and able to participate fully in society and in the local economy. New Zealand Football community development manager Jamie Milne was in Ashburton this week checking out the facilities and talking with businesses, schools, and community groups about the concept of the event. Milne said it was a unique initiative and one he was happy to be piloting in Ashburton. “You’ve got a world class facility here which is not to be underestimated. I came here (on Tuesday) and I was quite blown away,” Milne said. “You see the photos and stuff but it’s not until you get to the facility … they have a meeting room, multiple courts and a swimming pool. It really is terrific, it’s a bit of a gem down here.” Come October 13, the facility would be

a hive of activity as the extravaganza got under way with a Give-it-a-Go drop-in night with some of New Zealand’s most talented futsal players and coaches. Day two would include a junior skills clinic and a junior tournament followed by a youth tournament, and then an adult tournament later in the day. “One of the great things about futsal is that you don’t necessarily need to have played a form of the game before, it’s very easy to pick up and play,” Milne said. Ashburton District Council Welcoming Communities co-ordinator Ilana Batchelor said the event was all about fostering connections between newcomers and locals, and celebrating diversity in a fun way. She said there were so many levels at which people could participate – whether it be on court, welcoming people as they arrived, or supporting from the sidelines. She wanted the community to take ownership of the event. “And to go away feeling great about our community and great about themselves, and hopefully for people to have made connections.” She urged employers – particularly those with staff who were new to town – to get a team together and enter, as well as groups of family and friends. She said it was a social tournament, non-competitive and there was no cost. It was all about getting people interacting. There would be plenty of help on hand from football officials, as well as a few international futsal players, who would take to the court in a special match with some local celebrities during the festivities. Entries for the tournament extravaganza would close on September 30, with between six to 10 players needed per team, and teams could be a mix of genders and ages. During Have a Go Day, students could try their hand at netball, soccer, softball, basketball, tennis, hockey and rugby. Meanwhile, senior students have been embracing a sport of another sort – Turbo Touch.

Netherby School’s new entrant classroom takes part in regular exchanges with Merle Leask Kindergarten. Teachers and students get to meet the students who will be attending the school, while kindergarten students get to know what the school is like. These pictures was taken during the most recent kindergarten visit. Other students found themselves rifling through Guardian newspapers on Monday as they studied the letter “n”. Five students with particularly good effort and ideas were sent to show them to Principal Phil Wheeler.

Students at Ashburton Borough School are gearing up to present their Primary Years Program (PYP) Exhibition next Monday. Students have put in weeks of investigation, discovery and learning and now they’re ready to share their projects with friends and family.

Four budding Einsteins have picked up prizes for the projects they exhibited at a science fair in Timaru. A number of students travelled to the Sanford Science Fair earlier in September, accompanied by Miss Farrell and parents, and Sophie Gibson, Iela Mangubat, Ryan Watt and Lachlan Adam were called back to the prizegiving to collect awards. The four other finalists were Taymah Aiken-Wheeler, Maria Lawn, Olivia Fox and Gracie Trotter. Teachers important part of society I

t just seems like the profession of teaching just can’t take a trick at the moment. It’s been what can only be described as a tumultuous year for these critical positions in society, from a lack of staffing numbers through to pay disputes which have seen teaching staff take to the streets, a lack of relief teachers and now little or no applicants, or a lack of suitable applicants, for jobs advertised here in Mid Canterbury. It’s been a pretty dark few months, that’s for sure. Today’s front-page story about a lack of applicants for jobs in the district is a worrying sign – especially, as we have learned today,

that almost half of the district’s schools are currently actively looking for more staff. Now is the ideal time for schools to be looking towards locking in their teaching rosters for the next school year and when the well is looking considerably empty it becomes awfully hard for an education facility to plan for the future.

But what’s causing it? The decline has been happening for a number of years now, so perhaps recent events aren’t quite as deserving of the blame as what it might appear they should be. There’s no doubt the negative attention on the industry in recent months will have played a small part in that decline, because let’s face it – who’d want to work in an industry where there seems to be so much uncertainty? As Ashburton College principal Ross Preece suggests in today’s story, the media are in some ways responsible for that public perception, but without the issue unfolding behind closed doors in the first place, there would then

be nothing to discuss in the news medium. So, while there is an element of truth to his comment, it’s also a long way from being the truth and that saying, that you should never shoot the messenger, seems quite applicable in this instance. It is a real shame that the education industry is finding itself in its current situation because teachers I have spoken to have all suggested that there are few more rewarding roles within a community other than that of their own. The chance to play such a vital role in the growth and development of a young mind is quite humbling to witness and the satisfaction in seeing students

succeed and grow is a real high point. Yes, the hours might be long, and the role has considerably changed over the years to being much more than a walk into the classroom and teach off a sheet of paper job that it may used to have been, but the chance to teach through such a wide variance of mediums surely must be exciting enough to draw some in. Let’s just hope that things turn around quickly for the teaching profession, we’ve said it before in this same space, but it truly is one of the most important roles in our society and the need for wonderful people in those positions has probably never been greater.

Valuing a woman’s contribution to society I

want to ensure my daughter lives in a society which values the contribution she makes. A contribution that is valued on an equal basis to that of her male colleagues. I want her to be proud, like I am, of how progressive New Zealand is. We didn’t get this way by accident. Suffrage 125 is a perfect example of that. Of the 25,519 women that signed the petition for suffrage, more than 600 were from the Ashburton District. More than 600 local mothers, dressmakers, farmers, shopkeepers and Kiwi women who stood up, shouted out and achieved something extraordinary. They fought for our right to vote. For our right to participate in our nation’s democratic processes and to have our say. Their opposition was strong, loud and at times a seemingly

overwhelming majority, yet ultimately, they prevailed. They never gave up, and still haven’t. Twenty-five years after this victory, Kiwi women gained the right to stand for parliament. Fifteen years after this, we finally had a woman Member of Parliament – Labour’s MP for Lyttelton, Elizabeth McCombs. Today’s Labour leader, turned Prime Minister/mum, Jacinda Ardern, highlights how Suffrage 125 is a chance to reflect on how far we have come and to set future goals. Yes, Aotearoa is still on a journey to equality.

Economic independence, career options, freedom from violence … many issues that suffragists fought for yesterday, are still issues we are grappling with for a better, fairer tomorrow. New Zealand led the way by fairly giving women the right to vote, and we can lead again by ensuring gender pay parity. Jacinda Ardern makes no apologies for focusing this Government on lifting 88,000 Kiwis out of poverty. In many respects, you do that by enhancing the security, opportunities and equality available to their mothers or female caregivers. We are committed to closing the gender pay gap, and through a raft of pay equity agreements, have already closed this gap by 9.2 per cent since 2017. We’ve extended paid parental leave and introduced the Best Start Payment to ensure all Kiwi parents receive financial support during baby’s most

influential years. We’ve increased funding for survivors of family violence for the first time in 10 years and given $13.5 million to victim support There is still work to do in terms of careers, remuneration and rights, but we have our sleeves rolled up and we are working on it in partnership with New Zealand. Suffrage isn’t a women’s issue, it’s a nation’s issue and I’m proud to see Mid Canterbury recognises that. Let us celebrate 125 years of suffrage, and let it inspire us for the future.

Big profit jump for Synlait Canterbury-based milk processor Synlait Milk said it had almost doubled its net profit for the June year to $74.6 million, driven by an increase in infant formula sales. Last November, Synlait completed its second “wetmix” kitchen at Dunsandel, and the same month commissioned its Auckland blending and consumer packaging facility, both of which allowed the company to increase its finished infant formula capacity, chairman Graeme Milne said in a statement. Synlait also announced that it had entered into a conditional agreement to acquire selected Talbot Forest Cheese assets for an undisclosed sum. This included property, plant and equipment at a new 12,000 tonne Temuka site, the consumer cheese brand and customer relationships. Synlait lifted its turnover from $759m to $879m and its bottom line profit after tax went from $39.5m to $74.6m. The company said its final average total milk price for the season just finished had been set at $6.78 per kilogram of milksolids (kgMS). Following in Fonterra’s footsteps, Synlait cut its forecast milk price for the 2018/19 to $6.75kg from a previous forecast of $7.00/ kg. Synlait said the fall was mitigated to some extent by a weakening New Zealand dollar. “However, the forecast of $6.75/kg anticipates that there will be an improvement in commodity prices in the medium term,” the company said. Synlait bought 28ha in Pokeno in February.

He has been replaced by former Fonterra executive, Leon Clement. Synlait has been one of the local market’s outperformers. At yesterday’s closing price of $12.78, the stock has rallied by 130 per cent over the past 12 months.

Cattle dead after 1080 poison drop Eight cattle have been found dead on a King Country farm after a 1080 drop in the area, prompting a Department of Conservation investigation. DOC said it appeared the cattle had breached a fence line into the pest control operational area and the department was working with the landowner to work out how it happened. Samples of the dead animals were taken for analysis and the department expected results back within the next fortnight. The pest control operation in Mapara took place on September 6 to target rats, stoats and possums using aerially applied 1080 baits. The operation included comprehensive consultation with adjacent land owners. DOC said staff were alerted to the dead cattle on a farm adjacent to the operation area. They visited the farmer, accompanied by a vet, assessed the area and took samples from the dead animals. The site inspection indicated cattle had entered into the operational area through a broken fence line. During a pre-flight of the operational boundary a fortnight before the drop, DOC staff noted stock in the operational area and advised the farmer to remove the animals. Landowners Paula and Mark Stone told RNZ the communication about the operation had been poor. They said 1080 was dropped next to the

area they were told to move the cattle to rather than the bush next to the area they were moved from. They said it was possible the animals escaped into the operation area. DOC Operations Director David Speirs told RNZ the evidence pointed to the animals escaping on to a paddock in the drop zone. He said no bait was found in the area where the cows were found dead. Speirs said a review of the operational data showed the aerial drop went according to plan and as agreed with all adjacent landowners. The helicopter GPS flight lines showed no over-flight of the adjacent farm area and there was a 50m buffer within the operational area in place, he said. “We have been working closely with the landowner concerned to confirm exactly what happened, and also to support them as any good neighbour would under these circumstances with the burial of the dead animals and we have offered to assist with feed for the remaining animals,” he said. DOC said nearly 30 years of pest control in the area had resulted in one of the most important strongholds for kokako on mainland New Zealand and this area was a key source site for establishing new kokako populations. New Zealand falcons and North Island robins are also found in the reserve. – NZME

The transparency of senior management admitting Fonterra’s performance was unacceptable took some of the steam off Mid Canterbury farmers at a shareholder meeting in Ashburton. Dairy farmers were upset last week to learn that the co-operative had made its first full-year loss, of $196 million, in its 17-year history. The loss, announced at Fonterra’s annual meeting, compared with a $745m net profit last year resulted in the co-operative taking on more debt and delivering share earnings of 24c and a low dividend at 10c per share. Had former chief executive Theo Spierings and chairman John Wilson attended the Ashburton meeting last Tuesday farmer shareholders might have been less forgiving. But the new guard of chief executive Miles Hurrell and chairman John Monaghan laid it on the table that another poor performance would not be tolerated and this seemed to appease farmers. Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury dairy chairman Chris Ford said the tone of the meeting had been quite positive because Fonterra leaders had been so transparent.

No farmer questions were aimed at high earning staff or the criticised hefty bonus of Spierings. Meanwhile, farmers seem to be handling well the lowest milk price in the Global Dairy Trade auction since 2016. Ford said the lower dollar against the United States currency was playing a large role in the declining milk price. “It’s not all doom and gloom and you have to put it into perspective. In 2016 the dollar was at 73c and now its 65c so the milk price has dropped as much as the dollar.’’ The average milk price fell 1.3 per cent to $US2934 during the auction on Wednesday with whole milk powder back 1.8 per cent to $US2768.

Reinvestigation of Chinese steel imports Officials have been ordered to reconsider New Zealand Steel’s bid to have anti-dumping duties imposed on Chinese steel imports. The High Court has quashed a July 2017 decision not to impose the countervailing duties sought on imports of galvanised steel coil and has ordered the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to reconsider NZ Steel’s application. Justice Jillian Mallon ruled the ministry was wrong in advising then-Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Jacqui Dean that banks providing loans, or firms supplying inputs such as hot rolled coil, to the Chinese producers did not qualify as being “government” entities. As a result, any benefits they provided did not constitute subsidies, MBIE believed. Justice Mallon also ruled MBIE incorrectly discounted the findings of other overseas investigations at the time, which had found that the Chinese government had subsidised steel products. Accordingly, the minister’s decision was inconsistent with the Trade (Anti-dumping and Coun-

tervailing Duties) Act 1988 and therefore unlawful. NZ Steel, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Australia’s BlueScope Steel, is the country’s largest steelmaker. It considers that steel manufactured in China is subsidised by the government there and that imports of it cause material damage to the domestic industry. It has lodged three complaints with MBIE to date. Chinese steel exports have been a bone of contention around the world as US and European producers accused the Asian nation’s subsidies and overproduction of undercutting their local industries. Last month MBIE made a provisional ruling that hollow steel sections imported from Malaysia had been dumped in New Zealand. But the same ruling rejected NZ Steel’s complaint that the same type of product imported from China had also been dumped. MBIE ruled that the more expensive Chinese product had received only minimal levels of subsidy, consistent with its earlier decisions. - NZME

Vodafone under investigation The Commerce Commission has opened an investigation into Vodafone’s “unlimited” mobile plan, a spokeswoman confirms. In July, the telco launched a new $79.99/month plan called Unlimited Mobile. Like unlimited plans launched earlier by rivals Spark and 2degrees, Vodafone’s unlimited plans has a number of limits. Speed is throttled down from 4G to 3G if a customer downloads more than 22GB of mobile data within a month. Streaming video is restricted to standard definition (480p) only at a time when most streaming video services – including Netflix, which is offered free for six months under Vodafone’s unlimited plan, offer high definition (HD). And tethering to a laptop or using your phone as a wi-fi hotspot (so other devices can share its internet connection is not allowed). The restrictions are all listed on Vodafone’s Unlimited Mobile promo page – albeit only after you click on a link labelled “Important things to know”.

Vodafone’s “unlimited” plan has a number of limits. The question now is whether the “limited” factors are sufficiently prominent. The ComCom refused any comment while its investigation was open. However, a spokeswoman did confirm that Spark and 2degrees unlimited plans are not under investigation. A spokeswoman for Vodafone

said, “We watched the market develop and grow in its understanding of and demand for unlimited mobile plans and followed our main competitors with an offer in July this year. We’re working through the details with the Commission and will co-operate fully with their investigation.” - NZME

Confidence falls to lowest level since 2012 Consumer confidence has slumped as the slowing housing market and rising fuel prices potentially start to bite. The Westpac McDermott Miller Consumer Confidence Index fell 5.1 points in September, taking it to a level of 103.5 – the lowest level for the Index since September 2012. “New Zealand households are particularly concerned about the

outlook for their own finances and the general economy over the next year,” said Westpac chief economist Dominick Stephens. “Expectations for their own circumstances in the year ahead are at their lowest, outside of an actual recession, in the history of the survey.” It wasn’t clear whether consumers were starting to feel the real impact of the slowdown or

whether they were worried by what they were hearing about business confidence, he said. “The groups that benefited from the Government’s Families Package, which took effect from 1 July, did report some improvement in their own circumstances,” Stephens said. “But this appears to have been outweighed by other concerns in most consumers’ minds.” - NZME

Sticky hoisin ribs with asian slaw

Serves 4 Lamb 700g Quality Mark lamb ribs 1/4 C hoisin sauce 1/4 C oyster sauce 2T soft brown sugar 2t finely grated fresh ginger 1t crushed garlic Asian slaw 1/4 green or red cabbage, finely sliced 2 carrots, grated 4 spring onions, trimmed and very finely sliced 3 handfuls mung bean sprouts 1 handful picked coriander leaves 2T sesame seeds, toasted 2T light soy sauce 1T lime juice 2t soft brown sugar 2t sesame oil 1t wasabi paste 1t nigella seeds or black sesame seeds

■ Preheat the oven to 200°C. ■ Lamb: Place the lamb ribs in a large baking dish. ■ Mix together the hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, ginger, garlic and 1/2 C water. Pour over the ribs and toss well to coat. Cover with baking paper and foil, seal well and place in the oven. Cook for 1 hour. ■ Remove ribs from the oven and uncover. Return to the oven and cook for a further 20 minutes until dark and crispy, turning halfway through cooking. ■ Asian slaw: Place the cabbage,

carrots, spring onions, sprouts, coriander and sesame seeds in a large bowl. ■ Combine the soy sauce, lime juice, brown sugar, sesame oil and wasabi in a small screwtop jar and shake well. Drizzle over enough dressing to moisten the salad and toss well. ■ Sprinkle with nigella seeds or black seasame seeds. ■ To serve: Serve the lamb ribs with the asian slaw. Kim to dismantle nuke site South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced a sweeping set of agreements after their second day of talks in Pyongyang yesterday. The talks included a promise by Kim to permanently dismantle the North’s main nuclear complex if the United States takes corresponding measures, the acceptance of international inspectors to monitor the closing of a key missile test site and launch pad and a vow to work together to host the Summer Olympics in 2032. Declaring they had made a major step toward peace on the Korean Peninsula, the two leaders were side by side as they announced the joint statement to a group of North and South Korean reporters after a closed-door meeting earlier yesterday. “We have agreed to make the Korean Peninsula a land of peace that is free from nuclear weapons and nuclear threat,” Kim said as he stood by Moon’s side at the guesthouse where Moon is staying. “The road to our future will not always be smooth and we may face challenges and trials we can’t anticipate. But we aren’t afraid of headwinds because our strength will grow as we overcome each trial based on the strength of our nation.” Kim and Moon earlier smiled and chatted as they walked down a hallway and into a meeting room to final-

Bert and Ernie outed The sexual orientation of two puppets has long been the subject of curiosity. And now a longtime Sesame Street writer has added more reason for speculation. Mark Saltzman said in a recent interview that when he wrote for Bert and Ernie, he thought of them as gay. “I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert and Ernie, they were. I didn’t have any other way to contextualise them,” he said in an interview. Sesame Workshop, which produces Sesame Street, has long tried to shut down speculation about the characters’ sexuality.

Donald Trump to pick up where Moon has left off. Trump has maintained that he and Kim have a solid relationship, and both leaders have expressed interest in a follow-up summit to their meeting in June in Singapore. North Korea has been demanding a declaration formally ending the Korean War, which was stopped in 1953 by a cease-fire, but neither leader mentioned it as they read the joint statement. - AP

Captain Cook’s ship may have been found One of the greatest maritime mysteries of all time could be solved with the apparent discovery of HMS Endeavour – the ship James Cook captained on the first voyage to Australia. Marine archaeologists are expected to announce a breakthrough in the 25-year search for the historic 250-year-old vessel on Friday. It’s believe the ship’s final resting place is in Newport Harbour, off Rhode Island on the northeast coast of the US. The search has been narrowed down to an area just off the Goat Island shore near Gurneys Resort. Archaeologists from the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) and the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (RIMAP) will release a 3D photogrammetric image of the site at the official announcement in the US later this week. But the origins of the ship can’t be confirmed until its remnants are excavated – which researchers expect will happen next year.

Sandwich ex Endeavour, the detailed work must begin to prove it,” Dr Abbass said in a statement. “Therefore, fundraising is ongoing for the artefact management facility needed to process, store, and display the artefacts that will emerge from the planned 2019 excavation.” The Endeavour was pur-

chased by the British Navy in 1768 and navigated by Cook to claim Australia – then known as Terra Australis – for the British during his historic voyage. It became the first ship to reach the east coast of Australia when Cook arrived at the site now known as Botany Bay in 1770. The ship was later renamed the Earl of Sandwich 2 and last seen in 1778 while being used for transportation purposes during the American War of Independence. Researchers believe the Endeavour was part of a fleet of 13 ships scuttled by the British during the Revolutionary War to blockade Newport Harbour from the French. RIMAP started studying sunken British transports in Newport Harbour in 1993 with a remote sensing survey. There were 13 potential vessels that could have been the Endeavour but the search has recently narrowed to possibly “one or two archaeological sites”, RIMAP said in a press release. - NZME

‘No idea how it will end’ The Big Bang Theory boss has no idea how the show will end. CBS announced last month that the US sitcom would conclude for good after the 12th season, but co-creator Bill Prady has admitted he’s still unsure how the final episode will go because him and the writers prefer not to “plan ahead”. Speaking to UsMagazine.com, he said: “We’re approaching the final season the same way we’ve approached the 11 seasons before: with no planning whatsoever. From day one, we have never planned an arch for a season. We don’t plan ahead, we just kind of just tell the next story.”

Exotic Greek wedding MasterChef judge George Calombaris and his girlfriend-of-11-years Natalie Tricarico have tied the knot in a stunning resort overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The lavish reception is believed to have taken place at the Island Athens Riviera resort, which boasts stunning views of the Athenian Sea, according to the Greek City Times. The ceremony, which took place on Sunday, was held at a beautiful Greek Orthodox Church. Ashburton Bowling There has been a lot of work going on over the winter around the club. The Markers around the Green have been replaced. Jo, Roger G, John K, Raymond S & GT spent a few hours drilling holes for the new “non trip” markers that go around No 2 green. No 1 green was done the day before by Jo & Roger. A good job done by all. The same day as the markers were done Judy with some help from Raymond tidied up the Gardens along the south east side of the greens. Think Judy must have lost something under the shrubs as I seen her on her hands and knees burrowing right under them. Seed Sales, this year, another tremendous effort was put in by Roger, Gavin and helpers retrieving the seed off the greens and selling it to clubs in the North Island. In all over $2000 was made, a great effort. Edges John on the edger has kept them under control through the winter along with Roger mowing the lawns when needed. Painting of some of the seats has been done by Jo which helps to make the club look a little bit brighter. Cards again have been well supported, these afternoons have been run by Diane and helpers, money from these afternoons have more than paid for the Power & Biscuits over the winter.Opening Day is Saturday September 22 at 1:15pm, which is not long now. Wear you whites and bring a plate for afternoon tea. When you get there early put your Name Tag in and be patient while waiting for the match committee to organise the afternoon, it is not easy when they don’t know who is coming.The Greens are looking great, after many hours of work by the green staff. Ashburton Combined Friendship Club The all-day trip to Waimate and Oamaru now scheduled for Tuesday October 15. There is also half day local Ashburton trip in September. Our mini speaker, member David Linton told us about his life and his working career. His family lived on Creek Road, which he remembers as gravel. After Ashburton High School he started work at Wright Stephenson as an office boy, progressing to grain and seed rep. He moved to the North Island and learned about maize and the export of maize to the Pacific Islands which provided a few memorable experiences. He went to the USA to learn more about maize and soya beans. In 1981 he moved to Oamaru still working with grain and seed. In the mid-90s he started his own business working with specialised crops including phacelia, turf grasses, carrots and Asian brassicas, durum and purple wheats. Our main speaker was member Diana Bruce, who told us about the Welsh Pony Stud she and Robin established. As a child, family holidays at Gore Bay gave ample opportunity for horse riding. As a teenager, she rode her horse from Christchurch to Gore Bay for the summer holidays, taking three days and staying with strategically located friends

on the way. When her own children became old enough, she bought a Welsh Pony foal. She imported a Welsh Pony stallion which was the second ever horse to be flown from the UK. They soon had a thriving stud business and imported more horses. Diana was very hands-on in caring for her horses at foaling time when she and Robin took turns to sit with the mare so as always to be ready for any eventuality when the foal was born. She gained a lot of experience and expertise and at times was able to save foals that might otherwise be lost.

Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club What a super crowd for our keyboard group evening. Just the six of us this time (we’d dearly love some more) and Karen (Karen Balderstone that is) played some delightful songs on the piano while we set up. Karen is a relatively new member, and she should be justly proud of herself for pulling this evening off. Well done. The keyboard group arranged the evening programme, and after John welcomed all, plus three visitors, we played a couple of brackets, then Michael, Rose, and Shirley played on their own. Michael: Mame, and Moonglow. Shirley: Top of the world, and Everybody loves a lover. And Rose accompanied her keyboard on the piano with: I hear singing, and You’re the reason. Janet found a gem of a find in one, Gavin Templeton, and he gave us a real crowd pleaser with his rendition of Dame Edna (Auzzie twang ‘n all) with skits and songs. He later returned with some wonderful impersonations in song of: Julio Iglesias, Willie nelson, Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong, Miss piggy, Kermit, Bob Dylan, and Sam Hunt. Thank you so much Gavin, you complimented our programme so well. Don’t usually mention the raffle winners, but they all went to men (7 of them. Just thought I’d MENtion that) Also you blokes, a warning, if you have large feet and don’t measure up, one hundred dollars is a lot of money. The group then played a further two brackets, then Janet, Barbara and yours truly played 2 solos each. Janet: Too young, and Enjoy yourself. Barbara: a zippy polka bracket, and My way, and I played; You’re my reason for living, and Butterfly. We concluded the evening with Mexico, and Wunderbar. Ashburton Golf Club We now have all the finalists sorted out for the men’s club champs, but at the time of writing the ladies semi-finals are still to be completed. As always we will have some wonderful games in store come Finals Sunday. Finals day this year is a week on Sunday, the 30, so we will look a bit closer at the games next week. Though a great big well done has to go to Peter Bain, Wilson Hii, Matt Tait, Dave Hewitt, Tim Newton, Chris Lovelock, Robbie Bell, and Jordan Green for getting into the major finals. Last Saturday for those not involved in Champs, we held a stroke round and Brent Clarke bounced back into form after injury, shooting a glorious nett 65 to pick up Radius Care player of the day, other top scores were Paul Warren 66, Braydon Wood and Charlie Alexander both 69. This Saturday we have a rest from club champs, with a stableford round and an RMF cup counter, this is really getting down to the sharp end now, with only 2 more rounds after this before the top 30 cut. On Sunday we have the annual Templar Trophy at the Brandon which pits the best Ladies, Men, Masters and Juniors from Aorangi against their Canterbury counterparts, get yourself down to the club to see how golf should be played. Next Saturday Matt will be holding one of his wonderful Pro Shop Days, which are always great fun with superb prizes on offer, check on the website or contact Matt for Details. With the long summer evenings approaching, we as a club need to be proactive around free loaders playing on our beautiful course, to that end Brian Wilson is setting up a roster, for willing volunteers, to be at the club at certain days and times to welcome all players to our club, and to show non-members where to pay their green fees and to get their tags from. If you think you can help out, just contact Brian through the club. As with all volunteering, many hands make light work. Until next week good golfing.

Ashburton MSA Travel Section The Ashburton MSA Travel Section are planning an outing to Geraldine next Thursday September 27. Our first stop will be at Mia Flora for morning tea and a look through their gift shop and garden. Lunch will be in Geraldine then we will visit the Pole People and the yoghurt factory. Further details are on the notice board at the MSA. Any MSA member is welcome to join us.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club

We had 6 players take part in the Tremor Trophy at Ascot recently with 5 coming away with a placing. This event has been held ever since the earthquake and this year the proceeds went to the Helicopter Trust. We had 12 players take part in our Club singles which was won by Richard Browne and Runner up was Neville Bensdorp. Ellen Pithie won the plate and Marion Harrison was runner up. Mick Little won the Bowl and Betty King came runner up. Last week we played the first round of a Super Six competition at Papanui. This is a competition with six players from Ashburton, Ascot, Christchurch and Papanui. Next week we are playing at Ascot. This is a new event and a new Challenge for those of us involved. Next Saturday several members are taking part in Ascot’s Spring Tournament, and we have 3 members taking part the same week-end in the mixed doubles in Dunedin. We wish all players a “Good Game” We are always on the lookout for new members and on Thursday 27, members are asked to bring along someone and introduce them to the game for our “Bring a mate and Plate” afternoon. If anyone wants to give petanque a go, don’t wait to be asked, just turn up at 115 Racecourse road at 1.30 on the 27. On Thursday October 18 a Super Six Tournament will be played in Ashburton starting at 10.00am at 115 Racecourse Road. This is the final day of 4 rounds played between Papanui, Ascot, Christchurch and Ashburton. This is an event Ashburton hasn’t been involved in before and we are enjoying the challenge.

Ashburton Toastmasters The Ashburton Toastmasters club’s September 12 meeting was a little different than usual, as we had guests from the St John cadet programme. Jeff, the evening’s toastmaster (the person in charge of the agenda) opened the evening at 7:30pm with welcoming our guests, both the cadets and others. Jeff also followed, throughout the evening, with interesting facts related to St John. The first speech was an educational one by Phil, about the reasons he joined Toastmasters and what he is still getting from it today. Great inspirational and very suitable for an evening with so many guests. We moved to the first speech, with Adi introducing Dan (and forgetting to specify length of speech to the timer). Dan gave a speech titled “What will I be when I grow up” about his life experience and personal growth. The speech is the first in a two-part assignment, to deliver a speech, get feedback, and repeat the speech (or another speech) while implementing improvements based on the feedback. We didn’t have additional speakers and moved to table topics, short impromptu speeches. Jo led the table topics with a list of hundreds of questions and each participant choosing a random number, getting a question and talking about it for 1-2 minutes. The added time allowed most people present to participate. The St John guests blew us away. While they were hesitant at first, once they got going they spoke eloquently and with confidence far above what we would have expected from teens doing their first table topics. Awesome work! The long table topics session was followed by a break, after which Adi gave an evaluation for Dan’s speech, also explaining the concept behind evaluations and Toastmasters. This was followed by Rene doing evaluations of the table topics. Table topics evaluations are hard since you get less than two minutes to write down feedback for each one, and tonight’s of speakers was far longer than usual. Despite that Rene did a stellar job, giving helpful and detailed evaluation for each table topics speaker including the St John cadets. Chiyo then, as memory master, asked us questions about the things we heard and what we remembered, Robin gave a grammarian report, Matt did a timer’s report and Rene, again, gave the general evaluation as yet another role tonight. Not many could have done as well as you did tonight, Rene. The evening closed with Matt going over the roles for our next meeting and Jeff closing the meeting.

Grey Power Ashburton Inc. On Monday September 17, President Peter Thomas welcomed 40 plus members to the monthly meeting of Grey Power Ashburton. Peter thanked Bernard for entertaining on the organ whilst members arrived. Apologies were received from; Colin & Isabel Cameron; Cath Carr; Brian & Daphne Early; Peter & Val Knight; Barbara Blincoe; and Cheryl Gear; moved for acceptance by Sheila, seconded by Greer, carried. Peter read several memos from Federation on the following topics; the appointment of an Aged Care Commissioner; the medical cannabis issue; healthy homes legislation; rising cost of electricity and the possibility of Kiwibank filling the void of

bank closures in smaller towns. Peter then introduced the speaker for the afternoon, Andrew Falloon, National Party member for Rangitata. Andrew outlined his early life living and going to school in Ashburton and later to Christchurch Boys’ High. After graduating with a degree in Political Science he worked in Parliament as an adviser to the National Party and also in banking for a short time. After selection as the candidate for Rangitata he set himself the goal of knocking on 10,000 doors in the electorate. This was achieved. He has strong opinions on several topics and considers the $2.8b being spent on free first year tertiary education would be better directed into the trades. He voted for the “end of life choice” bill at the first reading. He also considers the huge amount of money being spent on infrastructure in Auckland is at the expense of many smaller communities. There were several interesting questions on the following topics; the proposed four-lane highway between Christchurch and Timaru; the anti-smacking law and disruptive students in schools; how to get rid of MMP; the state of our rivers and streams; health and safety rules; upgrading of state houses in Ashburton; bridges over the Rakaia and Ashburton rivers on a four-lane highway; the length of time between diagnosis and treatment for some cancer patients. Greer passed a vote of thanks and presented Andrew with a fruit tray. The raffle was drawn and prizes distributed. The meeting closed at 2.45 and afternoon tea was served. Mid Canterbury Central Friendship Club Two visitors were welcomed to our September 18 meeting with 74 members attending. President Barry Quantock also inducted 3 new members; Kevin Nicol, Warren McPherson and Merv Green. The meeting was reminded that an afternoon tea for those over 89 years will be held on November 30. Brian Lawn was our mini speaker, originally from Taranaki where his father farmed a 200 acre hill country mixed farm of sheep and dairy. Brian attended St Joseph’s Convent School in Whakatane, and later boarded at Sacred Heart College in Auckland. He then went sharemilking for a neighbour running 300 cows. In 1974 he shifted to the South Island and purchased a sheep farm near Mt Somers where he increased stock numbers from 900 to 3000 ewes. He later moved to a deer farm near Methven where he remained for 10 years before retiring. Brian has also been active in rugby for many years. Our Main Speaker, Bryan Harre, was introduced by Roger Lake. Bryan is a professional hunter from Geraldine who related one of his most memorable safaris which took place 21 years ago when he was new to hunting professionally. At that time he was hosted by a German hunter for a six-week shoot in Cameroon on the Ivory Coast. Their road journey to the far south was obstructed by the military and police who were then in revolt. Most of the hunt was in dense rain forest jungle which they traversed with the help of paid native pygmy porters loaded up with rubber back-packs. While hunting for only deer and antelope, they encountered snakes, elephants, monkeys and a gorilla during their trek. In the latter stages of the hunt Bryan was struck down with a severe form of malaria which was almost to cost him his life. After a 10-day struggle to march out of the jungle he eventually managed to return home and a long period of hospitalisation to make a full recovery. Bryan was thanked by Russell Small before the meeting concluded.

Hundreds of students from schools across the South Island have descended on the Selwyn District for the Koru Games this week. The fifth edition of the games kicked off with an opening ceremony in Lincoln on Tuesday morning before the Year 7 and 8 students from 52 schools – in-

cluding Ashburton Intermediate and Rakaia School – began competing across 13 sports. Motivated by the success of the AIMS Games in Tauranga, the Selwyn Sports Trust decided to bring a similar concept to the South Island, hosting the first Koru Games in 2014. From a five-sport event with 1000 competitors, it has grown to boast 13 sports this year and

around 3000 athletes. This year’s event saw the addition of ki-o-rahi and squash to the mix. At the Lincoln Event Centre are badminton and boccia, with lawn bowls at the Lincoln Bowls Club, netball on the netball courts and sevens on the fields. Down the road at Lincoln University is basketball, ki-orahi, squash and volleyball.

Tennis and football are taking place at the Prebbleton Reserve. In Rolleston, table tennis is at the Rolleston Community Centre with the touch tournament out on the Rolleston Reserve. While competition is acknowledged as an inherent part of the games, a strong ethic base underpins all competitions and playing within the spirit of the games is an expectation for all.

Explosive allrounder Ashleigh Gardner has suffered yet another concussion, ruling her out of this weekend’s Women’s National Cricket League season opener. One of the country’s most exciting cricketers, Gardner was hit on the helmet while batting in an Australia intra-squad match last week on the Gold Coast and is yet to fully recover. The 21-yearold, who played rugby league in her junior days, has a concerning history of concussions. - AAP

CLUB NEWS Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club President Val opened the September meeting held recently. After the National Anthem was sung birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated. Attention was drawn to the new table cloth, made by Heather, and it was noted there are new signs at each end of the town. Trips convenor Avis Kingsland told of the combined bus trip on 15 October to Oamaru via Waimate. There was discussion on the Christmas lunch, it was decided to have this at the Hotel Ashburton on 12 December. The mini speaker was Marg Watson who told of her recent stay at Gloriavale on the West Coast. She went with a group of friends and attended the concert. They were treated like royalty and were staying at a farm house. Hunters are encouraged in the region, and bees are kept. They saw the honey extraction area. Marg advised that the school was formal with old books, and boys and girls are taught separately. It was noted there were not many spontaneous smiles on the children. After the raffle was drawn and morning tea, the tables had been rearranged for five people each. Gwen Clucas, assisted by other members, then ran a lively quiz, with questions on many different topics, also some pictures to identify. This was fun, and showed we did not know as much as we thought we did. Members were reminded of the coffee morning and the movie.

President Val concluded the meeting with the Thought for the Month – People are like tea bags….You have to put them in hot water before you know how strong they are.

Netherby WI Netherby Women’s Institute held their annual Home Industries Show on September 10. 20 members exhibited 247 entries which were of a very high standard. We had 4 ladies from Hinds that did the judging. Several visitors from other Institutes were present including our Mid Canterbury Federation President Judy Vaughan. There were 4 categories that you could enter in: Flowers: Cooking and Preserves; Knitting or Crochet and Handwork, Sewing and Craft (including photographs). to Catherine Thomas. Joanne Taylor was our guest speaker. She told us about how the idea of Latitude magazine came about in the hairdressers and how it is still the success after 10 years. She has now handed over the reins to Lucinda Diack. Joanne’s new interest now is being a Trustee with Advance Ashburton. She mentioned some of the success stories that they have achieved. At Joanne’s request a collection was taken up for Cholmondeley Children’s Centre in lieu of a fee for herself. Other activities Netherby will be involved in is the Federation half-yearly meeting at Wakanui Hall on October 2 and Suffrage Walk on September 19 and of course the Ashburton A&P Show. The Indoor Bowls competition held on August 31 resulted in a 2nd place for one of our 2 teams entered. The Final to be held on September 28. The Sales Table was well supported and the afternoon concluded with a delicious afternoon tea.

Run and Walk Ashburton The mid-week meets saw the runners on Tuesday night enjoy a 7.5km run around the domain, whilst the Wednesday Walkers, 10 in total spread amongst both time slots, enjoyed a lovely mild evening striding out around the streets of Allenton. Amongst the runners we have members training for the Queenstown marathon and half marathon and the New York Marathon in November, and early Decem-

ber the Kepler Challenge. Hill work and time on feet being important as everyone works toward their specific goals. Happy Valley Road near Methven offers a good hill workout which five members travelled to on Saturday morning achieving 14km of down and up. The weather was very still and warm, with everyone commenting the sun screen will be coming out on the next outing! Back in Ashburton three early bird runners ran along the river track to Cochranes Road before returning to meet up with the 7.30am crew collecting an extra four walkers and heading this time down the south side river track.

Everyone had the summer clothing out this week with a beautiful warm morning and a fabulous sun rise experienced. The Afternoon Meet had 11 walkers who enjoyed the shade of the North river track, returning back to the domain pavilion via Trevor’s Road and Walnut Avenue. Two runners remained at the domain and completed speed work. This week spring certainly was felt with the mild evenings and warm days along with the blossom and daffodils in the domain were particularly beautiful. Otaki pair to relish Hastings mile Otaki trainers Johno Benner and Hollie Wynyard will have two strong chances in Saturday’s Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate (1600m) at Hastings, and the couple couldn’t be happier with their charges heading into the mile feature. Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m) winner Scott Base ran home strongly in the first leg of Hawke’s Bay’s triple crown, the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m), while Group Two winner Wyndspelle pleased connections with his sixth-placing. “They were two of the better runs in the race I’d say,” Johno Benner said. “I couldn’t really fault them and 1600m looks good for both horses.” Benner has been pleased with the pair’s work since their first-up run and believes they will both relish the step-up in distance to a mile. “We couldn’t be happier heading into Saturday. Everything is going to plan, they have both been working well and they are in good order. We have got two nice draws (Scott Base – 6, Wyndspelle – 4) to work with, so we’re pretty happy.” All going to plan both runners

In brief Lengthy rehab Waikato jockey Maija Vance suffered damage to five vertebrae in her fall at Rotorua on Sunday. Vance, 27, had a four-hour operation on Monday, to stabilise her spine, and is still in the intensive care unit at Middlemore Hospital, in Auckland. “The surgeon said the operation went really well,” Vance’s father, former top jockey Bob Vance, said yesterday. “She also has multiple broken ribs, at the back of her ribcage, so with that and the operation, she’s in a lot of pain.” - NZTM

Kathryn Clark is on a mission to grow the game of cricket for girls in Mid Canterbury. A former player herself who once captained the Canterbury Development team, Clark said cricket had given her so much through her playing years, and she’d decided it was her time to return the favour. She was set to host cricket coaching for girls sessions in both Ashburton and Methven over the next two weeks, and all going well they will lead to further coaching in the weeks to come. “I’ve had some really good coaches in my time, and I feel like it’s my time to give back,” Clark said. Clark grew up in Christchurch, but now lived in rural Mid Canterbury. “I have played cricket for as long as I can remember. I think I started playing when I was about 10, back in the day in Christchurch,” Clark said. Clark said last year she coached her eight-year-old son at Lauriston and ended up doing some one-on-one coaching with young kids, but as the season progressed she noticed something. There was a real gap when it came to girls’ cricket, Clark said. The sixth-grade competition was the first where youngsters got to try hardball cricket and she noticed that the girls in the teams often weren’t given a chance to shine. They were last to bowl and down the bottom of the batting order. “If I can get in there and give them some skills, then they might have more of a chance,” Clark said. “I’ve still got the passion for it and I love working with kids and seeing them achieving and building on their skill level.” Like many young female cricketers, Clark – a bowler who ended up finishing her career as an opening batter – had played her fair share of cricket

with boys over the years and as girls got older it was hard to keep them playing unless they had a real passion and drive. “There’s nothing around for girls basically, and for girls to get into it especially, they need other girls to do it with them, it’s a social thing for girls,” Clark said. “I had the passion and the drive for it, so I was happy to play whenever and wherever.” But not all girls had that same determination and too many were falling by the wayside. Mid Canterbury Cricket had got in behind Clark’s crusade and it was hoped that it might lead to the reformation of a secondary school girls’ team in the district. Clark said it was hoped they could form an Ashburton College/Mt Hutt College combined side to play interschool cricket, and already they’d had a number of girls show an interest, they now just needed a few more to put their hands up. Clark’s cricket coaching for girls’ sessions were open to girls of any age and all equipment would be supplied. The first session would be held at the Ashburton Domain Oval on September 23, and the second at the Methven Domain on September 30. Both would run from 10am until 11.30am.
