Mixed prospects for youth gang Several youth offenders responsible for a crime spree in Ashburton earlier this year are in the final stages of court-ordered programmes designed to change their anti-social behaviour. The youngsters appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton Youth Court this week where those involved in their rehabilitation compared notes about their progress and prospects for the future. One of the group, with a long list of offences including theft and interfering with vehicles, was granted an early release from a youth residential facility. A
report from the facility was positive. The judge said it was heartening to see he had been engaged in sport, though focus was still needed on managing his use of alcohol and other drugs. The youth is still subject to supervision for six months. Another youth who admitted taking a car and driving while forbidden will be the subject of a social worker’s plan and report. He is due back in court on October 9. Another is about to start a five-month plan where agencies are combining resources to keep him on track. If the youth
manages to stay out of trouble he may be rewarded with a section 282 discharge, which keeps his record clean. Another of the youths was granted this discharge after completing a plan that involved community work where he cleaned windows and toilets and washed floors. Police prosecutor Rob Hooper said the section 282 was generous considering the seriousness of the youth’s offending. Another youth was also granted a 282 discharge, the judge noting he had grown up during the period of his rehabilitation. She warned him to keep out of trouble.
