Murder victim fondly farewelled A solemn procession of mourners marked the tragic end of a young life in Ashburton yesterday. More than 100 people turned out to farewell Tainui James Wano (Tai) who died as a result of injuries inflicted in an altercation on Tuesday last week. The service to celebrate the 25-yearold’s life packed out the Hampstead Rugby Clubrooms and was followed by an interment at the Ashburton Cemetery. Grief was etched on the faces of many of those gathered, still struggling to come to terms with having one of their own snatched from their midst.

Wano had gathered with friends and whanau to commemorate the death of a relative Rangi Wano, who died in a vehicle smash in Christchurch on September 12, 2005. Police and emergency services were called to the McDonald Street address shortly before 10.30pm on Tuesday, September 13. Inside they found Tai Wano had already succumbed to stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A 23-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder. He appeared in the Christchurch District Court the following day.

The accused man has an Allenton address. He was remanded in custody without plea to appear in a High Court sitting in Timaru on October 4. No bail application was lodged. Judge David Saunders granted the accused man interim name suppression pending his next court appearance. Wano spent much of his childhood in Geraldine, where he attended local schools. Many of his former classmates and whanau attended his farewell yesterday and have taken to social media in an outpouring of grief.
