Road safety first priority By Katie todd

As Labour weekend rolls around, many Ashburton residents will be hitting the road and travelling though some of the busiest areas of the South Island. Police and the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) are urging drivers to stay safe throughout the weekend and to share the road like it’s your family driving around you. Drivers can keep themselves and others safe by paying attention to their driving and surroundings, driving to the conditions, never driving impaired, and always wearing their seatbelt, National Manager Road Policing Superintendent Steve Greally said. “This is where Police’s focus remains as well,” he said. “Everyone who uses our roads has a responsibility to ensure that safety is their first priority. If we all work together, we can make a difference and stop deaths on our roads.” NZTA are advising drivers to check their Labour Weekend Journeys tool to choose a good time to travel. Pioneer Hall’s historic significance to be acknowledged By Sue NewmaN

Pioneer Hall will become the second link with Ashburton’s past to be recognised and identified with a plaque spelling out its historic value to the Ashburton District. The plaque will be unveiled on Monday ahead of Historic Places Mid Canterbury’s annual meeting. Ashburton’s railway overbridge carved out its own spot in history in November when its plaque was unveiled to coincide with the footbridge’s 100th birthday. The plaques were inspired by London’s blue plaque scheme which uses using small, circular cobalt tiles to recognise the city’s heritage spots. Ashburton’s plaques are also blue and are made of powdercoated alloy. Historic Places Mid Canterbury chairwoman Julie Luxton said the group had spoken with owners of another four properties with historic value and those plaques would be placed before the end of the year. She has another four sites she hopes will also have plaques installed this year. The group received $5000 from the Ashburton District Council’s community fund towards plaque installation, but paid for the overbridge plaque out of its own funds. While Pioneer Hall’s plaque will be placed on Monday, it was created earlier this year and since then has been touring New Zealand in the hope that it will become the standard for all historic buildings, nationwide. “We’ve had some really good responses, some very positive comments,” Luxton said. The organisation’s cause was helped earlier this year when it was awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Heritage award for the plaques in the Canterbury Heritage Awards. With Pioneer Hall’s historic significance now clearly recognised, she hopes this will add weight to the organisation’s

It is currently unclear whether the building will be demolished to make way for the new buildings or whether it will be strengthened and integrated as part of the complex. “It’s a very important little building, it’s part of our social history and it does deserve to be kept,” Luxton said. The building started its life in 1916 as a base for the Ashburton Hospital Board. By the mid 1920s the board had moved its headquarters to Ashburton Hospital and the Ashburton County Council’s engineering staff moved around the corner from their Baring Square east headquarters into the small brick building, remaining there until 1939. At that time the current county building was rebuilt and the Havelock Street building was converted into the Women’s

In 1978 the museum relocated to buildings on the old Ashburton Technical School site and Pioneer Hall went through changing uses – from taxi office until 1990 and then the headquarters of Birthright until 2004. It then stood empty until January 2007 when the Ashburton District Council granted the local branch of NZ Historic Places Trust a five year lease, with right of renewal.

Police name Ealing crash victims By Katie todd

Police have named the two people who died in a double-fatal crash on Monday on State Highway 1. Sixty-five-year-old Helen Strang Chapman and 49-year-old Riki John Perrin died at the scene of

the crash near Ealing shortly before 1.40pm. Both were from Timaru. The crash caused one vehicle to flip in the northbound lane, and one to hit the concrete Ashburton District sign. Both Chapman and Perrin were the sole occupants of

their vehicles, police advised. Reports have emerged that one car was observed swerving, speeding up and slowing down in an erratic manner before the collision. Police had been alerted to the dangerous driving around 25 minutes beforehand and dis-

patched a vehicle in pursuit. Early speculations have pointed to a medical event as a possible cause. The Serious Crash Unit are investigating, and Senior Sergeant Phil Dean of Ashburton Police said he believes it will be some

time before they are able to provide details. Earlier this week, investigators were due to speak with witnesses, and looking at factors like speed and seatbelts. Police extend their sympathies to family and friends.

Rodeo rides into town with thousands expected to attend Methven switches its persona from a ski bunny-filled town to something more like a scene out of an old western tomorrow when one of the biggest social events on the calendar, the Methven Rodeo, rolls into town. Thousands of people from all over New Zealand flock to the small township annually to enjoy the day’s entertainment and the 2018 edition is looking set to be no different, with perfect weather conditions expected and another huge crowd in attendance. Tomorrow’s event is the 49th time the Methven Rodeo has been held. Last year more than 5000 people rolled through the gates of the Methven Showgrounds and organisers are expecting a similar number again by the time competition is finished tomorrow. Some of the best cowboys and cowgirls in the country, including a few well-known local names, will be part of the competition throughout the day with 12 different competitions taking place. In the premier open bull ride, cowboys must survive eight seconds on the back of a beast weighing in at around 800kg. The more difficult the bull, the more challenging the ride … but more potential to score points from the judges. The same applies to the broncos, with cowboys wary of reputations. Animals were treated under a strict welfare code and an experienced veterinarian will be on course tomorrow to make sure there were no issues. A three-legged race for students from schools in the Methven area

is also expected to generate plenty of rivalry, with Mt Somers Springburn School defending the title it won last year. Methven Rodeo spokesperson Kasey Morris said that organisers were really happy with the number of entrants this year. “It’s about on par with last year’s entries,” she said. “So we are happy with that and just looking forward to a really good day.” The rodeo begins at 10am with main events from noon, as in previous years. The event has adopted The Key to Life Charitable Trust as its charity for the next two years and hopes to donate $15,000 in that time. The trust is committed to reducing the rate of suicide in New Zealand. The rodeo community had lost one of their own within the past year and the trust’s goals were heart-felt. The stresses caused by mycoplasma bovis in the community were also real. As a result of mycoplasma bovis, the second division bull ride had been removed from the programme as a precaution. The rodeo will also feature refreshments and food. Those buying alcohol need to prove they are 18 years of age or older. Police will have a heavy presence as usual around the Methven area with strict rules around alcohol in place throughout the course of the weekend. Admission to enter the rodeo is $20 for an adult, $10 for a child and kids under the age of five are free.

Marking 30 years of info centre By Sue NewmaN

Over its 30 years of life, Ashburton’s i-SITE building has been the place of work for more than 90 volunteers who have been a source of information to thousands of locals and travellers. On Wednesday, many of those volunteers spent a few hours reminiscing and among them were a handful of originals who’d been there from day one. Dellwyn Moylan was the first person to sign on as a volunteer. As a 19-year-old she joined centre manager Pauline Wilson in what was then the Ashburton Information Centre. The centre was on the same spot as the now closed i-SITE but it was a much more modest building, donated by the Ashburton Kiwanis Club. It was extended on two occasions before it was moved to the Hampstead Rugby Club’s grounds. Moylan remained a volunteer for the next nine years, years she described as a long apprenticeship, before she went on the payroll. “I really loved working there. It was great. It was for the tourists but also a lot of locals came in looking for information too,” she said. Over the years, the centre always managed to find great teams of volunteers, Moylan said. “People loved the job because it was fun. You were always meeting new people.” The information centre opened on October 10, 1988 and the new centre opened in 2005. It closed late last year. Moylan said the volunteers all wanted to see an information service of some kind returned to central Ashburton. “Without that we’ve lost a lot of local knowledge,” she said.

Dr Libby inspiring, life-changing L

ike hundreds of other Mid Canterbury women, I could not wait to go and see Dr Libby. For the first time ever she was visiting Ashburton, and would be delivering a talk on emotions, ageing, hormones and beauty as part of her new nationwide live event The Hormone Factor. First port of call when arriving at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on Tuesday night was, as always, the centre bar. There is nothing so luxurious to me as chatting before a talk or show over a glass of wine, then sitting back in the audience while sipping away. But walking in, it seemed suspiciously quiet in the bar area and to my surprise it was closed. My shriek of disappointment must have echoed throughout the building, because the next thing I remember centre management were explaining to me this was a wellness event and there would be no bar tonight. Thankfully, I recovered quickly and was able to enjoy Dr Libby’s talk and all the inspiring messages she delivered with it. No surprises cutting down on alcohol was one of them!

The three vegetables and two fruits per day suggestion was not enough anyway, and much less than the five vegetables and two fruits recommended by Australian health authorities. “Less than 10 per cent of Kiwi adults meet our standard, it’s ghastly low, it’s frighteningly low.” Although they are basic messages we hear all the time, Dr Libby’s depth of knowledge and experience gives a new way of looking at things. “There is no such thing as junk food, there is just junk and there is food,” she says. So it will be way more vegetables and salads for me and my family. In addition to this I will attempt to not feel guilty about slowing down and stressing less, and yes, I may even begin to have a little less alcohol in my life! - review by Susan Sandys

Right in the thick of the action these Labour Day races, punters can expect to stumble upon a unique, new feature. Wendy Stevenson and Helen Spicer (right) are bringing artwork to the Ashburton Racecourse for a one-day exhibition and sale. The two Ashburton women are both involved in the racing scene and share a lifelong passion for painting. Both have exhibited in destinations across Canterbury – but it’s the first time they’ve opted to combine their passions. They hope their bold, bright artworks will add an extra dash of excitement to the annual event, “People can check it out and then sit back and watch the races – or just come for the art,” Stevenson said. Over the past months the duo have accumulated a range of works encompassing a variety of sizes, styles, patterns and fresh colour palettes, which will all be for sale on the day. Most will be less than $500. Stevenson said the works would be particularly good for anyone seeking a bit of colour for their house. Many contain a rich range of colours, she said, perfect for bringing a room together. “And if people are looking to have something special created for a room, we’re happy to talk to them about it as well.” If all goes well on Monday, the artists hope they may be able to hold another exhibition at next year’s Labour Day races, perhaps even featuring a guest artist. The exhibition will kick off at 10am, and will be located under the grandstand near the secretary’s office. There is no entry fee to the races, or simply to see the exhibition.

Dementia, specifically alzheimer’s disease, is an unwelcome companion for growing numbers of New Zealanders as they age, but the facts around dementia are not all grim, old age psychiatrist Chris Collins tells reporter Sue Newman. The way you live your mid-life years plays a big role in ensuring your memory continues to function at a high level into your 90s.

here might be no cure for dementia, but there are plenty of things that can be done to lower your chances of dementia becoming part of your own old age. For old age psychiatrist Chris Collins, providing people with knowledge that will lessen their chances of alzheimer’s disease in particular is key in slowing what is currently a dementia tsunami. The facts are harsh – your chances of getting alzheimer’s double every five years after the age of 60. They’re not odds you want to gamble with and that means showing your brain some love today makes absolute sense, he said. And it’s never too late to start doing the things that will improve your brain health. Key among those was ensuring blood pressure was within a healthy range, eating a balanced diet, taking part in physical activity, staying socially engaged and keeping your mind active through education and with games and puzzles. Chris spoke to more than 70 people in Ashburton recently and delivered one strong and clear message – looking after your brain in your 30s, 40s and 50s will give you the best possible chance of reaching a dementia-free old age. “Preventing dementia is a major challenge for researchers and clinicians and research of the past 20 years has come up with no new treatments. The money is not on thinking about prevention. There’s a lot more to be gained by getting serious about prevention rather than putting the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff,” he said. The facts are grim, the number of people with dementia is increasing; that’s logical as the population increases, but running alongside those numbers is clear evidence that numbers per thousand are actually dropping, Chris said. “There is some evidence we’re winning the battle of the epidemic of dementia that’s threatening to overwhelm us.” The decline is probably due to better education and healthier lifestyles, but looking ahead there is a

big question mark, and a whole new debate to be had over the impact of recreational drug use as a contributor to dementia, he said. “My hunch is the epidemic of drug use out there will hit us quite hard later on.” Recreational drugs aside, research shows that if people take brain health seriously from around the age of 50 rather than later in life, their chances of fending off dementia are better, Chris said. “Dementia absorbs a huge amount of public health money and it will snowball; we have to get serious about this, about looking after brain health earlier.” Because, in spite of years of research no cures were emerging for alzheimer’s, taking the path of prevention made simple commonsense, Chris said. Diet was one of the key factors that had been proven to significantly improve the chances of avoiding alzheimer’s. Rather than looking at single food groups as the answer, a Mediterranean diet – rich in nuts, fruit, vegetables, fish, legmes and white meat but low in red and organ meat, commercially baked goods and fatty spreads – appeared to provide the most positive benefits for brain health, Chris said. “Research shows that total adherence to a Mediterranean diet gives a 48 per cent less chance of developing alzheimer’s. Studies show that this diet not only lessens your risk of dementia but also makes significant difference in your brain with less cortical loss, the bits of your brain that are sentinel to alzheimer’s.” Obesity, or just being overweight also increased your risk, he said. Alcohol was indisputably a toxin to the brain and there was clear evidence that higher rates of consumption increased the risk of dementia in older age. There were some schools of thought that believed moderate consumption could protect against cognitive decline, and there was evidence that fewer than 14 units a week did not increase the risk, Chris said. “Fourteen should be your maximum if you want to look after your brain. For women that’ll be less. We do know that if you drink more than 14 units per

revent dementia week, for every seven units increase per week your risk of dementia rises by 17 per cent. Drink heavily and you’re at real risk.” Smoking late in life accounted for 5 per cent of the risk of developing dementia and air pollution up to 7 per cent. In terms of sleep, risk factors rose with sleep deprivation, disrupted sleep rhythms and sleep disordered breathing, Chris said. “It’s also important to have fun, to laugh, use your imagination, they’re all ways of stimulating the brain in a healthy way.” While you don’t have to crank up and run a marathon, there’s plenty of evidence to show that structured, longer duration and multi component exercise programmes are good for your brain and delay the decline in cognitive function, Chris said. Studies suggest that 150 minutes of exercise per week is needed. “Many people drop out of sport in mid-life because they’re less able, but playing sport is a really good way to keep up your exercise. A Swedish study showed a high level of physical fitness in middle aged women produced an 88 per cent reduction in dementia risk in late life.” Hearing loss is also tagged in studies as a major contributor to alzheimer’s, he said. “Studies show that cognitive decline progresses 30 to 40 per cent faster for people with hearing loss than for those with normal hearing. And a 2017 Lancet review found 9 per cent of dementia was attributable to mid-life deafness.” Social isolation and loneliness were also big factors in increasing the risk – as high as 50 to 90 per cent, Chris said. “If you have a rich social network throughout your life it will build up your cognitive reserve. Studies have shown that building up social interaction over three months will have measureable benefit in terms of cognition. So you need to keep and nourish your friendships and build new ones as you age. Don’t drop out of clubs and community work. It’s important to keep doing stuff with people even if it becomes more and more difficult as you get less fit.” While most people cared for family with dementia at home as long as they could, for many secure care eventually became the only option and while most parts of New Zealand offered good care facilities today, Chris believes that into the future a broader range of facilities that gave people choices would be needed. In some European communities care facilities for people with dementia were integrated into the wider community where young, mid age, elderly and people with dementia lived in the same community and that could be mirrored here, Chris said.

“People with dementia generally interact well with children. Another option is supported flatting arrangements but we’ll always need dementia specific rest homes for people with behavioural issues.” There was no denying that caring for someone with dementia was a tough job. he said. “Often when you’re a carer your sleep becomes disrupted because theirs is disrupted and it becomes emotionally very difficult. What we lack is overnight carers, people who can step in and provide temporary respite.” The emotional and physical toll on carers was under-recognised, he said. The facts around dementia were sobering, but the good news was that there were plenty of steps people could take to give themselves the best possible chance of living an alzheimer’s-free life. And that meant no one should be afraid of old age, they should embrace the ageing process rather than viewing it as a progression of losses, Chris said.

QUICK MEAL

Roasted eggplant 4 medium sized eggplants 1 t salt ½ C olive oil 2 large onions (red or brown), peeled and thinly sliced 2 cloves garlic, crushed 400g can chopped tomatoes 2 T coarsely chopped flat-leaf parsley ¼ t each of salt & ground black pepper ½ t brown sugar 1 juice of 1 lemon ½ C grated parmesan ■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. Trim any stalks off the eggplants, then, using a small knife or potato peeler, peel off strips of the skin lengthways, leaving alternate strips of skin and exposed flesh. ■ Sprinkle with salt and set aside. Heat 1/4 cup of the oil in a pan and fry each of the eggplants, turning so they brown on all sides. Remove from the pan and set aside. ■ Heat the remaining 1/4 cup of the olive oil in the pan, to a medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook gently for 10 minutes until soft and translucent. Add the garlic, cook for a further 2 minutes, then add tomatoes, parsley, salt and pepper. Simmer, uncovered, until it reduces and deepens in colour – about 10 minutes. ■ Pack the eggplants into an ovenproof dish so they fit snugly. Cut

a slit in each eggplant, (not all the way through though) and spoon some of the onion and tomato sauce inside each cavity. Spoon the remaining tomato mixture on top. ■ Mix the sugar, lemon juice and water and pour this around the eggplants until it almost covers them. Cover the dish with a lid or double layer of foil and bake for 45 minutes or until the eggplants are tender, even collapsing. ■ Remove the lid or foil, add grated parmesan and bake for 10-15 minutes more until the juices are reduced and syrupy and the top is golden. Who gets a slice of Allen’s estate?

Paul Allen joined the Giving Pledge almost a decade ago, and an estate tax bill will apply on much of what remains. But important questions loom about which of his assets are likely to be liquidated. Vulcan, the 32-year-old company that oversees Allen’s money, was the umbrella for a variety of investments, activism and philanthropic units. They include Vulcan Real Estate, a commercial portfolio that Bloomberg estimates is worth $US1.5b, and Vulcan Capital, which tends investments in public and private companies. He

also amassed one of the world’s greatest art collections, and held ownership stakes in two professional sports teams worth roughly $US3b. His philanthropic interests were split among several other units. The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, started by Paul and his sister Jody, oversaw assets valued at $US766m at the end of 2016, according to the latest filing available. That private organisation is distinct from the Allen Institute, a public charity that focuses on medical research, with Jody and several Vulcan employees serving as directors. Lori Mason Curran, Vulcan’s director of real estate investment strategy, said no changes are imminent for Allen’s network of interests, including the investment firm. “Paul thoughtfully addressed how the many institutions he founded and supported could continue after he was no longer able to lead them,” she said in an emailed statement, without elaborating. “Now, is the time to focus on

Paul’s life and allow his family and friends space to grieve. We will continue to work on furthering Paul’s mission and the projects he entrusted to us.” If other large estates are any guide, the legal transfer of his holdings will probably take years. Federal estate tax returns for deceased taxpayers must be filed within nine months, though many filers ask for a six-month extension. A large and complex estate like Allen’s – even when well-prepared for a succession – is likely to face an Internal Revenue Service audit, if only because of its size and complexity, said Wallace. During that time, administrative staffers are often required to deal with the agency’s questions. “There are no changes imminent for Vulcan, the teams, the research institutes or museums,” Vulcan chief executive officer Bill Hilf said. “There’s a clear plan of what he wants done for his legacy.” Allen’s death has already fuelled speculation among professionals in Seattle’s real estate market

SkyCity continues to explore “options in online casino business” and New Zealanders can already game via overseas businesses. The sale of the Darwin property is “nearing conclusion” and work is well under way expanding Adelaide operations, Stephens told the AGM in Auckland. SkyCity might sell some of its Auckland carparks and has interest from local and overseas businesses, he said, a point which concerned shareholders, worried about access. But chairman Rob Campbell said: “We think we have better return opportunities with the potential of a new hotel. SkyCity to sell carparks to build hotels, Queenstown expansion Auckland’s biggest single-site inner-city private car park owner might sell more than 3000 spaces to a local or overseas operator, investing funds into a big new hotel development. SkyCity Entertainment Group chief executive Graeme Stephens told more than 200 shareholders at yesterday’s annual general meeting that the development of further new hotels was a focus of the business, funds coming partly from Auckland carpark sales. SkyCity has 1960 parks under its existing Auckland casino/hotel site but a further 1327 are being built across Hobson Street beneath the NZ International Convention Centre site, giving it control of a total 3287 spaces. Some city carparks have sold for more than $200,000 each, so SkyCity’s parking spaces could be worth $300m or more, although no figures were provided yesterday and no numbers or valuations have been released. Stephens said: “There’s an opportunity to build another hotel, more residential” in Auckland. “We have made more purchases in this precinct”. The business is looking to “do more” in Queenstown, particularly to cater for international business, he said. Queenstown “we think needs one” he said of a new hotel there and the business has extended its lease in Queenstown by three years. The lease was due to come up for renewal later next year.

An enjoyable but controversial event H

aving a successful event at which hundreds of people flock to every year to enjoy doesn’t necessarily mean that everything is always beer and skittles. For every 20 people who might support and enjoy an event, there is usually one or two who won’t and would rather invest time in rigorously doing everything they can to sully the name of it and rodeos here in New Zealand fit right into the mould. For as long as there have been rodeos, there’s been protestors. In recent years they have gained a higher profile within the community, thanks in large to the invention of social media which

has extended their footprint significantly. And you can almost guarantee that, while a huge crowd of people flock through the gates tomorrow to the annual Methven Rodeo, there will be a very small percentage standing outside the gates protesting and making sure their opinions are heard. That’s the great thing about

opinions, everyone is entitled to them – but it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to listen to them. Anti-rodeo groups have done some serious damage to the image of rodeos over the past couple of years and one only has to go back 12 months to find where they reached a point which led to a reputable national group withdrawing their future support from rodeo events. That saga was nothing short of online bullying at its absolute worst – and the barrage of abuse received by this paper for covering the plight of the rodeo is enough proof to convince anyone of that. But the bottom line for tomorrow is that those behind the

Methven Rodeo have done, and will continue to do, everything within their power to ensure that the day is a huge success and that all animals which are taking part are well looked after and cared for. That’s a huge emphasis for them. Rightly so when there are anti groups breathing down your neck but it’s been common practice for many years now. And while there will be an antirodeo presence tomorrow, for the majority, it will be ignored. They’ll chant and holler to their hearts’ content, blissfully unaware that in most instances, that those who are walking past them are

paying no attention. Most won’t even bother to give the group the time of day. They’ll just walk on by and ignore them. If you’re heading to the Methven Rodeo tomorrow, perhaps even for the first time, take an open-mind into the event. Pay close attention to the respect shown by cowboys, clowns and everyone else involved when it comes to the safety of the animals. Rodeo has been a huge part of New Zealand for a long time now and we by no means want to see them taken away from those communities who are lucky enough to be hosting one at any point in the near future.

here are two ways to deal with the rising cost of fuel, accept it or change. We could debate and analyse and espouse opinions all we want about how we have got to the point where gas is finally becoming dearer than milk, but it won’t change the simple fact that petrol has risen into levels that are impacting on how we live. So, we can accept it or change. I chose change and because I am the caring, sharing type I have decided to misguide you magnificently through some critical actions you can take to become the true life David in this battle with the Goliaths of the fuel world. 1 Wear lycra in the car. Yip, we’ve all known since the thirties that streamlining is fuel efficient and the eighties proved that lycra cladding was beneficial to Richard Simmons (millennials please Google), so by combining the two we can reduce our own drag coefficient by .69 and therefore significantly save on fuel. My change was to invest in a lycra rainbow unicorn onesie that I wear under my motorcycle gear. Since discovering the joy of material that clings to my middle age spread and holds in wayward body gas emissions, I know I have saved at least 3 cents for every 1000 kilometres I have travelled. Can I warn you though that taking off my jacket at the recent Brass Monkey in front of four tattooed ex-headhunters did bring some questioning looks, until one named Pigdog revealed he wore a lycra teletubby singlet. 2 Always travel with your mother-in-law or a Winston Peters supporter. Simply ask them what it was like in the oil crisis of ’73.

toilet cisterns? The resulting loss of tank capacity led to less water being used during a flush. Well my North Island cunning has been applied to the fossil fuel disaster upon us. Simply borrow a brick from your neighbour’s garage wall, break it up into chunks and chuck it into your tank. Believe me you will be chanting my name by following this advice. The tank will hold less fuel and therefore cost you less to fill. Genius eh!! So there you have it oh frugal friend. I think it stinks that the council will not donate land to St John for an ambulance access when the council are going to waste a few more ratepayer millions on the leaky Art Gallery and Museum that many ratepayers did not want. St John do a great job in the district and are fully worthy of our support. I have asked before for details of balance sheet costs for the Art Gallery etc but this has not been published. Forest searched for body Police in Turkey investigating the alleged killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi have expanded their search, reports say. Unnamed Turkish officials say his body may have been disposed of in a nearby forest or on farmland. Khashoggi disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October, where Turkish officials allege he was murdered. Saudi Arabia denies any knowledge of what happened to him. Samples taken from the Saudi consulate and the consul’s residence during searches this week are being tested for a match with Khashoggi’s DNA. Separately a senior Turkish official told ABC News that US Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo had listened to an audio recording of the alleged journalist’s killing, but he later denied this. Turkey has previously said it has audio and video evidence of Khashoggi’s murder, but these have not been made public. The incident has caused considerable strain between Riyadh and its Western allies, with US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and UK International Trade Secretary

Mexico pressured as migrants head to border As some 3000 Hondurans made their way through Guatemala, attention turned to Mexico, after US President Donald Trump threatened to close the US-Mexico border if authorities there fail to stop them – a nearly unthinkable move that would disrupt hundreds of thousands of legal freight, vehicle and pedestrian crossings each day. With less than three weeks before the November 6 mid-

term elections, Trump seized on the migrant caravan to make border security a political issue and energise his Republican base. “I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught – and if unable to do so I will call up the US Military and close our southern border!” Trump tweeted, adding that he blamed Democrats for what he called “weak laws!”

The threat followed another one earlier this week to cut off aid to Central American countries if the migrants weren’t stopped. Trump made a similar vow over another large migrant caravan in April, but didn’t follow through and it largely petered out in Mexico. Yesterday, Mexico’s foreign ministry said the government was assisting members of the caravan who had already

crossed into Mexican territory. It was explaining the options to migrants and helping those who chose to apply for refugee status to navigate the lengthy process. Mexico had also dispatched additional police to its southern border after the Casa del Migrante shelter on the Guatemalan side of the border reported that hundreds of Hondurans had already arrived there. - AP

The guitarist of Guns N’ Roses fame, who has just released his fourth solo album, will perform at Baypark Arena on January 25 with his own group Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators. It was one of just two scheduled New Zealand shows on their Living The Dream album tour, with the other stop at Auckland’s Spark Arena on January 26. Slash, who was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, has visited New Zealand with the group twice before – 2010 and 2015 – but this will be the first time performing in Tauranga.

Bob Geldof: World leaders ‘gang bosses’ Bob Geldof has branded world leaders including Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin “gang bosses”, as he slated the rise of nationalism and populism. The rocker and long-standing political activist claimed the presidents of the US and Russia, along with Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban, gained their authority “through force and fear”. He said people are now living in “very dangerous times”, a situation he said had been brewing for the past decade.

Senior men’s and women’s Mid Canterbury basketball teams will take to the court for the first time in a number of years this weekend as Basketball Mid Canterbury tries to resurrect an old tournament. Pip Johnston is one of those who would take to the court in one of two Mid Canterbury men’s sides – Mid Canterbury Green and Mid Canterbury Yellow – for what was likely to be a tough two days at the EA Networks Centre. “It’s going to be like what they used to call a third division tournament, and they’re going to try and start getting it back up and running again,” Johnston said. “It probably hasn’t been going for about 10 years.” Teams from South Canterbury, the West Coast and Southland had entered the tournament. Mid Canterbury had two men’s teams and one women’s team. Johnston said Basketball Mid Canterbury’s Pauline Paterson used to run the tournament, along with a wheelchair basketball tournament that ran alongside it. “She’s the one trying to get it back up and running and where we can go from there, I don’t know,” Johnston said. Other regions might like to pick it up in years to come. Johnston said in years past, Mid Canterbury teams travelled as far away as Nelson and Invercargill for the division three tournament, and it was hoped that it might again become a yearly fixture on the basketball calendar. “At this stage all they are trying to do is get it back up and running. “It’s an experiment. “Basketball Mid Canterbury, they are the ones that have put their hands up and we will try and get it back up and running,” Johnston said. Years ago the top teams from the South Island and North Island tournaments would then play each other, and a tournament team was picked at the end, a bit like the New Zealand Heartland team for rugby’s Heartland Championship. Johnston made that team one year along with another Mid Canterbury player, Peter Kirwan, and the team went to Fiji to play. The two Mid Canterbury men’s teams would square off against teams from South Canterbury and the West Coast in the men’s draw this weekend, while Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury, West Coast and Southland would feature in the women’s draw. Pool play will be held today, with all teams to play three games, followed by the finals on Sunday. The main finals will hit the court at 5pm and 6.30pm.

The Tech Stags could put themselves in the box seat when it comes to nabbing a spot in the final of open grade cricket’s seasonopening T20 competition today. It may only be the second day of the season but having picked up two convincing wins on day one, another two wins today ahead of the bye in the final round should ensure the Stags finish on top heading into the final. The Stags’ first two wins were set up by opening batsman William McKee, who scored a half century in his side’s opening game of the season against Coldstream and followed that up with the season’s first century in game two against Lauriston. The Tech side batted first in both of those matches and followed their batting efforts up with top bowling efforts to ensure both oppositions fell well short in their replies. Against Coldstream the Tech bowlers were an economical bunch, with Des Kruger picking up 3/12 while Bevan Ravenscroft produced an impressive four overs featuring two maidens, two wickets and just two runs. It was the kind of form they are hoping to produce again when they take to the field in today’s first game against Methven starting at midday, and their second game against the Tech Old Dogs.

This year’s competition featured a bye due to the withdrawal of Allenton the week before the season got under way, and Lauriston had the bye in round one today. Lauriston were the team to beat last season, locking away three of the season’s trophies for the summer – the Pritchard Shield, Muirhead Rosebowl and the Studholme Shield. But on day one of the 2018/19 season they didn’t have it all their own way, starting with a three-wicket win over Methven before the loss to the Tech Stags. After sitting out the first game today, they will be back on the pitch at 3pm against a Coldstream side that had just one game on day one – the loss to the Stags – as they had the bye in the first round. Today Coldstream will take on the Tech Old Dogs in game one – a team that is only taking part in the T20 part of the season – and both sides would be looking to pick up their first wins of the season. The Tech Old Dogs had the other bye on day one and lost the game they did play against Methven. Methven has the bye in the second game today. Otago Volts batsmen Nathan Smith and Michael Rippon have served up a contender for ‘worst run out of the week’, amongst a competitive field. Yesterday the Volts produced a howler in their round two Plunket Shield match against the Wellington Firebirds. Michael Rippon clipped a ball toward square-leg. But as he turned for the second run, he slipped. Twice. Compounding matters, Smith made it halfway down the pitch before realising Rippon wasn’t coming back, then slipped himself, falling flat on his back. Guptill ruled out New Zealand opening batsman Martin Guptill has been ruled out of both limited overs series against Pakistan in the UAE because of injury. A calf strain suffered while playing domestic cricket for Auckland this week will require four to six weeks of rehabilitation. The hard-hitting Guptill will miss the T20 series starting later this month and the subsequent ODI series. Both comprise three matches, followed by three tests. When New Zealand jetsprint legend Peter Caughey lines up for another shot at world glory in Australia next weekend, Ashburton’s Shama Putaranui will be right there next to him. Four years after the duo combined to win their first World Jetsprinting Championship together, they’re back at another shot at the title and confident they’ve got the boat and the partnership capable of taking it out. In this year’s national jetsprint series, Caughey and Putaranui won the first five rounds, but came last in the final round after suffering a mechanical failure. They had accumulated enough points in the opening five rounds to still claim the title though, and they also picked up the New Zealand Stadium Cup at Bay Park. It was the duo’s second national championship together and they are now looking to back that up on the world stage. Caughey and Putaranui first tasted success on that world stage in 2014 when the world champs were in America, but on their second shot when New Zealand hosted the worlds in 2016 they finished second overall after mechanical failure in round one and a spin-out in round two. The worlds are full on. It was two full days of racing, with two practice runs and four qualifying runs before the competition went to top 16, then top 12, top eight, top five and then top three. Making it to the end will mean 11 runs which i stressful for both the engines, and those on board the craft. But Caughey and Putaranui knew they had the boat that was capable of making it to the top in the world and were confident in their own abilities.

Mid Canterbury rugby captain Jackson Donlan is not dwelling on what could have been heading into today’s Heartland Championship Lochore Cup semi-final against Horowhenua-Kapiti in Levin. He’s focused on the job at hand and helping his side to win the Lochore Cup for the second year running. The Lochore Cup was contested by the sides that finished fifth to eighth on the leaderboard at the end of the round robin, while the top four played off for a spot in the Meads Cup final. In an ideal world, the Meads Cup was where Mid Canterbury’s season would have come to an end, but that wasn’t how it panned out and while that was disappointing, there was still silverware to play for and Donlan said his side was determined to win it. Donlan has been a firm fixture in the Mid Canterbury line-up in recent years and has played in both Meads Cup and Lochore Cup finals before. He knew what to expect, and how hard it could be to get up for the Lochore Cup finals. “I was part of the team in 2015 when we played a game in the last round against South Canterbury and that was a win and we were in the Meads, or lose and we had a home semi in the Lochore,” Donlan said. Mid Canterbury lost that game. “And we turned up that next week and no-one wanted to be there and we got a hiding from North Otago, and it was a shocking way to end the season.” So there was a determination in the camp not to repeat that experience. It has been a funny old season for Mid Canterbury. A win in round one got the competition off to a great start for the Hammers, but by the time the round robin ended they’d had just three wins and five losses, and had it not been for a point deduction against the West Coast for a rule breach Mid Canterbury would not have been featuring in today’s finals at all. They won two of the first three, going down late against North Otago in round two, and were right about those next two games – they lost to Wanganui and South Canterbury, two of the four teams that will today be contesting the Meads Cup semifinals. Donlan said he looked back at the North Otago game, and last weekend’s narrow loss to another Meads Cup semi-finalist side in King Country, as two big moments this season. Both games could have gone either way, and had they gone Mid Canterbury’s way, they could well have been preparing for a Meads Cup semi-final today instead of a Lochore Cup semi-final. Mid Canterbury headed into

today’s semi-final as the defending Lochore Cup champions. They also missed out on the top four in 2017 but finished a little higher up and had a home semi-final followed by a home final against West Coast in Methven. It was a memorable game. Mid Canterbury won despite playing the majority of the game with 14 men, and part of the opening stanza with 13 men, after Maleli Sau was red carded and Donlan was yellow carded with only a few minutes gone on the clock. While disappointed to have missed out on the top four again, Donlan said the side had reassessed and headed into today’s clash feeling good. Mid Canterbury had already beaten Horowhenua-Kapiti

once this season, in round one, and were determined to do it again. “Obviously, for us, we know some spots to attack, but on the other hand week one is a really early stage and they (Horowhenua-Kapiti) have really only just started firing,” Donlan said. “I think we just need to play to our strengths. “We are not the biggest pack, but we are a mobile pack and we need to chuck the ball around and get it out wide.” They were determined that next week they’d still be training, and preparing for one last away trip this season, to a Lochore Cup final against either North Otago or Wairarapa Bush. “We are definitely a talented side, it’s just about putting it out on the field,” Donlan said.

The Wallabies, hardly short of reasons to rage against the world, must wonder why it is that Brodie Retallick has barely played test football in the last 12 months and yet pretty much won the Bledisloe Cup on his own this year. The kicker for the Wallabies is that Retallick will be back for the third Bledisloe encounter in Yokohama and he’ll be as full of pentup anger as he was in August. It’s truly bad luck for the Wallabies that Retallick’s only injuryfree window since September last year opened during the Bledisloe Cup, shut straight after and is now open again. Bad luck because the All Blacks are a different team with Retallick in the second row. The All Blacks are a good team without him – a much better team with him. They have played good rugby throughout the last 12 months but their two best performances, or two of their best performances at least, have been this year’s Bledisloe Cup tests. Maybe some of that was due to the way the Wallabies played: they are an attacking side that takes risks, which suited the All Blacks’ desire to play unstructured rugby and pounce on the counter attack. Maybe it was partly due to the soft core of the Wallabies – they fell apart in the second half of each test with just a modicum of pressure applied. But not so much of a maybe is that the Wallabies were hit with the full force of an All Blacks’ side that was inspired by Retallick. He managed to back-up a world class performance with an even better one a week later in Auckland. It was the presence of Retallick that enabled the All Blacks to turn up the dial to full volume and his impending return may not fill Australians with good cheer and merriment. He may have not played for the last six weeks but that shouldn’t be any kind of impediment to him making an immediate and obvious impact. He’s one of those rare athletes who can spend a month or two on the sidelines and come straight back into a test with his engine showing few signs of inefficiency. The All Blacks are all about looking for space, yet the reality of modern test rugby is that it has to be created rather than found and to do that, the journey begins with a collision. It is Retallick’s ability to set the opposition defence pedalling backwards that makes the All Blacks flow. He buys an extra second of time and a metre of space. The growing belief the All Blacks are vulnerable to rush defences is not quite true. They are vulnerable to a rush defence when they don’t have Retallick on the park and the injury gods, surely have had their fun with him and will allow him an uninterrupted run to remind the world just how good he is. - NZME

New Superbike format The World Superbike championship (WorldSBK) will debut a new three-race format in next year’s season-opening round at Phillip Island. The series has used a two-race format – one on Saturday afternoon and one on Sunday – for each round since its inaugural season in 1988. Mid Canterbury headed to Levin last night determined that their Heartland Championship Lochore Cup rugby semi-final against Horowhenua-Kapiti today would not be the end of their season. Mid Canterbury had already beaten Horowhenua-Kapiti this season, back in round one, but Mid Canterbury coach Sean Carter felt like the northerners had taken the Hammers a bit too lightly back then and had no doubt they wouldn’t be doing the same this time around. His team was ready to rise to the challenge though and make the most of a lifeline they received thanks to a six-point penalty handed down to the West Coast due to a rule infraction. That penalty dropped West Coast out of the competition’s top eight and promoted Mid Canterbury from ninth, to eighth, earning them a spot in the Lochore Cup (fifth to eighth) finals. “They (Horowhenua-Kapiti) are a team that we can beat if we stick to our patterns and tactics and establish a really good system,” Carter said. While disappointed not to have made the Meads Cup (top four), which had been their goal at the start of the season, Carter said there was still silverware on offer and his side would love to finish the season on a high. “The feeling is really good, it’s really positive. “I don’t think anyone wants

the competition to finish at this point in time, they are very keen to have another week as a group together.” Today was do or die, but that was a feeling that Mid Canterbury had been used to this season. “We’ve been fighting for survival the last three weekends I suppose, but it would be nice to be able to punch through and make the final of the Lochore,” Carter said. “To finish within the top four of the Lochore is probably realistically not a bad place to be as a new group.” Carter said this week had been a bit jumbled thanks to a string of injuries. Mid Canterbury lost Matt Bentley (dislocated elbow), Tom Heywood (dislocated shoulder), Tyler Blackburn (concussion) and Tom Blyth (knee injury) in last weekend’s loss to King Country, and midfielder Andrew Letham was still out after he was knocked out in the side’s loss to South Canterbury in round five. Heywood’s place in the front row had been taken by Leauma Tu Uga, and Carter said he would rise to the occasion. Fellow prop Adam Williamson – who wasn’t in the initial squad but was brought in part way through due to an injury that resulted in loan prop Sam Cottam missing the majority of the competition – will come off the bench again today after playing his blazer game against King Country. “He’s a powerful wee man.

“He has got some fantastic ball skills,” Carter said. Celtic’s Kody Stuthridge had also been called on to the bench, from where he was likely to make his first appearance for the Hammers in 2018. Loan player Aron Einarsson returning from injury meant there had been a shuffle round in the forwards with Einarsson set to start at eight, Seta Koroitamana moving to six and joining Angus Lindsay at seven, and the locking positions again taken by Eric Duff and Logan Bonnington. Penisimani Fakatoka joined Williamson on the bench as front row cover, with Shepherd Mhembere completing the forwards cover on the bench. The starting backline was unchanged from last week, although centre Tom HanhamCarter was under an injury cloud, and the backs cover on the bench was Timoci Nabakeke and Methven duo Hugh Griffiths and Oscar Baisagale. Mid Canterbury won the Lochore Cup last season, beating West Coast in a dramatic final in Methven where they lost players to both a red card and a yellow card in the opening minutes. Carter said that showed what was possible when a team had a real spirit and desire to win, and there was no shortage of either of those things in the 2018 squad heading into this season’s Lochore Cup finals. Today’s game at Levin will get under way at 1.30pm.

Pike camp confident Showcasing filly Wekaforce will head into today’s Gr.3 Barneswood Farm Stakes (1400m) at Ashburton in good form after finishing runner-up in her two starts this campaign, including the Listed NZ Bloodstock Canterbury Belle Stakes at Riccarton last month. The Tony Pike-trained three-year-old hasn’t raced since though, with her campaign plans disrupted when races were abandoned at Riccarton on October 6, but her trainer remains positive heading into today. “She’s really well. It was a bit unfortunate that she missed a run with the races being called off two Saturdays ago, we elected not to run her on the Tuesday, but she has trained on really well,” Pike said. “She ran second first-up against Melt, who is the benchmark three-year-old filly at this point in time, and her second-up run from the outside barrier was really good in the Canterbury Belle. “She drew 17 and the winner drew one. It was really the barrier and doing a bit of work to get across from that gate that cost her the race.” Wekaforce remains without luck when it comes to barriers, having drawn the outside gate in the eight horse field today. “She can’t pull a barrier at all down there,” Pike said. “I think she’s drawn the outside gate in all her starts down there so far. “The small field is going to be a bit of a help, but she’ll go forward and if she can get a relatively soft trip then she is sure to be competitive in that field. She should be a good eachway chance on Saturday.” All going to plan, Wekaforce will remain down south to contest her main target for the spring next month, the Gr.1 Gavelhouse.com New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m). “This will be her last run,” Pike said. “If she performs well we will probably head straight to the 1000 Guineas from Saturday’s race.” - NZME

Vaughans Road green waste drop-off After consultation with the Methven Community Board, opening hours at the Vaughans Road green waste drop-off site in Methven will change. •

The site will be open on Wednesday from 12:30pm to 2:30pm (instead of 2pm to 4pm) effective 24 October, 2018 onwards.

Sunday hours of 12pm - 4pm will remain the same.

This allows for a more efficient use of staff between Methven and Rakaia as currently, the two sites’ opening hours overlap on a Wednesday. There is no change to the opening time at the Rakaia Resource Recovery Park which is Wednesday at 3:30pm.
