Silver Fern Farms has admitted the company could have managed the decision to close the second slaughter chain at the Fairton plant differently. SFF managers met with workers from the now defunct second slaughter chain at the Fairton meatworks to iron out future employment options yesterday. Fairton union rep Les Linton said company was challenged for not keeping the union up to speed with developments before announcing the closure of the chain on Friday. On October 12 SFF Fairton supervisors were told to contact people who had worked on the second chain to tell them work would resume on November 15. However, according to the company,

only 35 workers indicated an intention to return. On that basis, just two days later, a decision was made not to open the chain this season. Declining stock numbers were also cited as a reason. “They (SFF managers) admitted they could have managed the situation better,” Linton said. The company has said the 35 workers intending to return will be redeployed to other areas within the Fairton plant on the same wages and conditions they were previously employed on. SFF managers also agreed to make another attempt to contact others who worked on the second chain last year, Linton said. “They say they have enough vacancies within the plant to absorb the 35 workers, however, that could change if

more people come forward,” he said. “Our main concern is to get everyone who was on the second chain last season to get in touch with Fairton to signal their willingness to work, because if they don’t it will be presumed they have terminated their employment.” Affected workers were told to take time to think about the company’s redeployment offer. Redundancy payouts were not discussed yesterday, despite union enquiries. Those at the meeting were also told the decision to close the chain was not indicative of its future. “They said it (the second chain) could be reopened next season,” Linton said. In the interim, he said the union would maintain a close eye on developments.
