“I started filming as it formed, if it hadn’t picked up the dirt and had been over grass you wouldn’t have even been able to see it,” he said.

“It was freakish what it did and didn’t touch.

“It got within 25m of the house and threw a big tractor tyre off a pile of silage and I definitely knew it was there before as we had to get a loader in to put it there and I did not want to move it again.”

“S**t happens and there is nothing you can do about it, but stuff can always be fixed,” he said.

“We have done what we can and the insurance people have been out to have a look at things.

“It has been a pretty constant

stream of phone calls and stuff happening. I have just got off the phone with One News and have just had Newshub out here.”

Fire chief Alan Burgess said they had received no call-outs relating to the weather and that in his time he had never seen a tornado to that level.

Man jailed for his 12th drink-drive offence A Clandeboye man convicted of his 12th drink driving offence was jailed for 10 months when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Wayne Dennis Reece, 58, a farm worker, had admitted driving way over the legal limit at Tinwald on September 7. He blew 1205 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath when police stopped him about 4pm, attempting to drive back to Clandeboye after the windscreen of his car had been replaced.

Reece will spend at least five months in jail and Judge Ian Mill granted authority for him to apply for an alcohol interlock device on his release.

The interlock will be wired to his car and needs an alcohol-free breath sample for the vehicle to operate.

It is likely the device will remain for 12 months, after which Reece is able to apply for a zero alcohol licence which will last for the next three years.

Reece’s lawyer Marilyn Gilchrist asked the judge to step back from a prison sentence, saying it would cost taxpayers a lot of money compared to a sentence of home detention, which would allow

Reece to keep his job.

She said he had also been offered a place in a residential facility that would help him deal with his alcohol abuse.

“He has been a good worker but if he goes to prison he will find it difficult to find a job when he gets out.”

Judge Mill said home detention was not appropriate as Reece had drink drive convictions going back to the 1980s. He had been jailed in 2007 and sentenced to home detention in 2014.

“I am sad to say I don’t believe home detention is appropriate again under the circumstances.”

Police said home detention was not an appropriate sentence and asked for a jail term between 12 and 18 months.

A probation report also recommended jail, pointing to Reece’s high reading and the fact he had been offered assistance over the years for his alcohol abuse but it had been unsuccessful in changing his behaviour.

Judge Mill said recidivist offenders like Reece were difficult to deal with but public safety was a consideration.

Bikers bring anti-violence message

The sound of thunder in the sky was replaced by thunder in the streets yesterday when the White Ribbon Riders rolled into town.

The leather-clad bikers visited two Ashburton schools to help spread the message of the white ribbon campaign.

Important messages of creating safe relationships, be that with teachers, friends or family and respecting others around you were shared.

The group have travelled around the South Island, with two other groups simultaneously touring the North Island.

Biker Blair McKenzie spoke to the children about the ideas of respecting others and keeping safe, before Tiki O’Brien took the students through a short Maori singalong.

“I’m just a member of the White Ribbon Riders who is really passionate about it and I’ve been part of the group for seven years,” McKenzie said.

“I grew up in a household that had violence and it is something that is important to me.”

Allenton School principal Bruce Tilby said he thought the work the group do was fantastic.

“They do a brilliant job talking about a major problem that is right throughout the country,” he said.

“Both the students and the teachers loved it.”

The group also visited Netherby School, and will continue on their journey which started in Kaikoura, finishing up in Nelson.

MP meets council, Fed Farmers

One of the highest ranking MPs in the New Zealand government was in Ashburton yesterday discussing everything from mycoplasma bovis to sporting events.

Labour MP Grant Robertson who is minister of finance and sport and recreation met with members of the Ashburton District Council and Federated Farmers to discuss a wide range of issues.

“With the council we discussed mycoplasma bovis and there were a lot of strongly held views amongst the council on that,” Robertson said.

“It is also quite a tight labour market in the region here.

We are looking through the regional skills lists and how through immigration we can fill those roles.

“Jo Luxton also raised the current discussions about the buildings at Ashburton College and those discussions are obviously ongoing with the Ministry of Education.”

The meeting with the councillors and mayor Donna Favel was held at the EA Networks Centre, allowing Robertson to put on his minister of sports hat with a tour through the facility.

“I go to a lot of centres and sporting stadiums and I was really impressed,” he said.

“It is very modern and there are a lot of big open spaces and it would be good to see even more national tournaments or international events held there.”

A former Dunedin boy who has travelled through Ashburton many times, Robertson says he believes the government are doing as much as they can to help the region.

Robertson said both infrastructure and rolling out the newest technology for the region was important.

“I believe there is huge potential in the region,” he said.

“With the Federated Farmers we talked about the importance of trade and what the government has done with rolling through the TPP and ongoing discussions with the European Union.”

Garden competition undergoes a radical revamp

With its sixtieth anniversary fast approaching, Ashburton’s annual garden competition is about to undergo a radical reinvention.

Ashburton Horticultural Society president Trevor Gamblin is leading the charge and after years as both a competitor and as the society’s head, he knows how difficult it has become to generate interest in the event.

Gone are the days when gardeners planned displays seasons out to ensure they had the perfect patches on competition juding day.

Changing work patterns and greater leisure options have taken their toll on traditional garden displays, he said.

“And that’s meant entries in all our old classes have been dwindling over recent years.”

Something had to change be-

cause every year, the competition was losing ground, he said.

The change is radical and it effectively opens the event up to every garden in Ashburton.

The two main sections, open and premier will go and in their place will be certificates of merit in an event that will see Ashburton divided into areas where judges travel streets looking for gardens that are worthy of a second viewing.

Those gardens will be viewed by different judges on garden viewing weekend, on February 10 and from there certificates of merit will be awarded.

By making the event open to every garden in town, it takes away the need for people to enter and that means people who may never have considered taking part in the competition may find their gardening efforts recognised, Gamblin said.

Three categories from the original event will remain, however – special feature, display of flowers and best lawn.

This will be identified by society members on their judging rounds.

Owners of winning properties will be invited to an awards night on February 25.

Certificate winners will be asked for permission for their addresses to be published.

Driver’s remorse for dreadful behaviour

Crash driver surrenders

“You are too old to be doing this,” Ashburton District Court Judge Ian Mill told a 65-year-old Methven man convicted of refusing to accompany police and give a blood specimen.

Maurice Dominic James Fitzgerald was appearing before him on three charges related to suspected drink driving in Methven on June 1. He also failed to remain stopped for police.

Judge Mill said Fitzgerald had two previous drink drive convictions, the most recent nearly five years ago.

He sentenced him to an alcohol interlock, a device that will be fitted to his car for the next 12 months. He can then drive on a zero alcohol licence.

“You are about to retire and have all sorts of responsibilities for your wife, your finances and

your grandchildren,” Judge Mill told him.

Fitzgerald’s lawyer Marilyn Gilchrist said her client accepted his behaviour that night was dreadful and he was remorseful.

“He has put his own future and that of his wife in jeopardy because of his actions.”

She had asked the judge not to disqualify Fitzgerald.

“That would allow him to ad-

dress various issues while still continuing to support his wife with her illness and financially as they head into retirement.”

She suggested his alcohol use and anger issues could have been addressed through supervision.

Judge Mill said the interlock device would still allow him to drive, though he needed to be alcohol free for the device to allow his car to operate.

Others to appear before Judge Mill in the Ashburton District Court yesterday were:

Andrew Mckay Hill, 57, was fined $550 and disqualified from driving for six months after admitting drink driving on Agnes Street on September 26. He must also pay $130 court costs.

Hill failed to indicate as he drove and was stopped by police and breath tested; he blew 530mcg.

Alex Antony Potts, 18, was fined a total of $700 and disqualified from driving for three months after admitting charges of drink driving and careless use.

He must also pay $260 in court costs.

Potts was driving in Ashburton at 12.40am on November 11 when he crossed the centreline, over-corrected and lost control of his vehicle. It crashed into a telephone pole.

Potts was breath-tested and found to be driving with 396 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

Compensation for the damaged pole is being pursued in the civil court.

Lawyer Paul Norcross said Potts had been on his way to another friend’s house when he crashed.

He knew he should not have been driving after drinking.

“The vehicle belonged to his father and it has been written off so he has a debt to his parents.”

David John Marsden, 36, of Ashburton, blew 600mcg when he was stopped on the Rakaia highway on August 3. He was remanded to December 17 for sentence.

Judge Mill said it was his fifth drink drive conviction.

Paige Kerr, 19, of Rakaia, admitted stealing two blowtorches and two gas bottles from Mitre 10 Mega in Ashburton on October 31.

He was remanded to January 21 for sentencing. The judge referred the case for restorative justice.

Jahdyn Leigh Tukiri, 23, gave his brother’s name when he was pulled over and breath-tested by police on October 10.

He blew 754mcg and was charged with drunk driving and driving while forbidden.

Police said Tukiri had been caught driving without a licence in 2016 and forbidden to drive until he had one, but he was behind the wheel on Moore Street in October when a member of the public concerned about his driving alerted police.

He said an associate in the car had had too much to drink, so he drove. He said he had twice failed his driving test.

Tukiri was fined $750, disqualified from driving for six months

Tracy Helen Muckle, 24, admitted stealing $30 from a resident in the rest home where she worked.

Police said CCTV cameras had captured Muckle taking the money from the resident’s purse. She later resigned.

“You were in a position of trust and should not have done it,” Judge Mill said. “But you have paid the money back, apologised and resigned.”

He fined Muckle $300 and ordered her to pay $130 court costs.

Melvin Cartalia Aragon, 32, a dairy farm worker of Pendarves, blew 1058mcg after police stopped him on Chalmers Avenue at 5pm on November 4.

He admitted the drink driving offence and was remanded to December 17 for sentence.

Police were alerted by a concerned member of the public and stopped his vehicle as he headed north on the avenue after a social function.

Aragon’s lawyer Gretchen Hart said it was his second drink drive offence in three years, both with high readings.

Daniel John Sampey, 28, was sentenced to 40 hours’ community work and disqualified from

David Alexander Soto Ramirez, 20, a farm hand of Coldstream, admitted charges of drunk driving and driving while forbidden.

He was fined a total of $900, disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to pay $260 court costs and $111.99 for a blood alcohol analysis.

Police said Soto Ramirez was driving drunk on Coldstream Road on October 16 when he failed to take a corner and drove through a fence and into a water race.

He was taken to Ashburton Hospital, where a sample of his blood revealed 157 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Lawyer Gretchen Hart said Soto Ramirez had previously sat his learner’s licence twice and failed.

He had previously been caught driving without a licence and warned.

“He was driving his mother’s vehicle, had been at a party and drove after drinking. He knows he should not have.”

A young man who drove a car that crashed into a Christchurch school – killing a teenage girl – has handed himself in to police. A man claiming to be the driver posted an emotional statement on Facebook, saying he was drunk at the time and did not want to drive in the first place. He said he was “so sorry, guys” and needed time to cope with what he had done, as he did not know until afterwards that someone had died. It is understood the driver had been at large after the accident happened late on Friday night. Police confirmed yesterday that a man was assisting officers in relation to this case. The 18-year-old passenger who died in the crash has been identified as Alexia Noble-Hazelwood. Three people were also injured in the crash and taken to hospital for treatment.

‘Double standards’ Family members of victims who died in the 2011 CTV Building collapse have accused New Zealand’s professional engineering body of “the worst example of double standards” after punishing one of the building’s designers while dropping disciplinary action against his boss. A judicial hearing at the High Court in Wellington began yesterday to determine if Engineering New Zealand, formerly the Institution of Professional Engineers (Ipenz), should have pursued proceedings against Dr Alan Reay. Reay’s company Alan Reay Consultants was responsible for designing the six-storey Christchurch office block that collapsed in the February 22, 2011 earthquake that killed 115 people.

The judicial review hearing is set down for three days.

Drugs bust Police have busted an organised Asian crime syndicate in Auckland – seizing more than a kilogram of methamphetamine, firearms and $100,000 in cash. Four people have been arrested and charged in relation to the case, which has been part of an ongoing investigation since two large-scale meth labs were discovered in Auckland in January. Police said officers carried out a number of search warrants last Thursday; and found the illegal haul in a West Auckland motel room.

Nights of Lights A special Christmas festival will ignite Ashburton’s seasonal joy this year, with the town’s very first Nights of Lights activities happening in Baring Square East every Friday evening in the lead up to Christmas.

The festivities will kick off on November 30 with the town’s annual lighting of the Christmas tree at Light Up the Night, followed by two Buskers Nights on December 7 and 21, and a screening of the classic Christmas favourite, How the Grinch Stole Christmas at Movie Night on December 14.

A decorated Festive Walk along the East Street walkway will also deliver a magical experience between November 30 and January 4.

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said Nights of Lights will be a festival not to be missed.

“The festive season is a time to celebrate the values we hold dear at Christmas time: sharing and the importance of family and friends,” she said.

“Nights of Lights brings these values together with free fun and entertainment that the whole family can enjoy. Get your friends and family together and head along to Baring Square East to join in these fantastic events and share in one of Ashburton’s big-

gest Christmases yet.”

The first event, Light Up the Night, presented by EA Networks, will include performances and Christmas carols, before the giant Christmas tree is switched on to light up the Square. Food from Lil Orbits, The Food Den, Mr Whippy, The Coffee Lady and Pita Pit will be available to purchase throughout the night.

The activities will get under way from 6pm on November 30.

December 7 and 21 will see talented local performers sharing their music at the Buskers Nights in the Square, starting at 6pm.

An outdoor screening of the 2000 family favourite, How the Grinch Stole Christmas will take over Baring Square East on December 14.

Movie-goers are encouraged to bring along chairs and blankets to settle in for the evening and will be able to purchase tasty treats from Kettle Corn, Yes Chef and Mr Whippy to help complete the experience.

A Grinch-themed ‘best dressed’ competition for the kids will take place before the movie starts.

‘Next seven days critical’ Britain’s besieged Prime Minister Theresa May warned yesterday that a leadership change wouldn’t make Brexit negotiations easier, as opponents in her Conservative Party threaten to unseat her and the former Brexit secretary suggested she failed to stand up to bullying from European Union officials.

As furious Conservative rebels try to gather the numbers to trigger a no-confidence vote, May insisted she hadn’t considered quitting.

“A change of leadership at this point isn’t going to make the negotiations any easier and it isn’t going to change the parliamentary arithmetic,” she told Sky News in an interview.

May added that the next seven days “are going to be critical” for successful Brexit talks, and that she will be travelling to Brussels to meet with EU leaders before an emergency European Council summit on November 25.

An announcement this week that Britain has struck a draft divorce agreement with the EU triggered a political crisis in Britain, with the deal roundly savaged by both the opposition and large chunks of May’s own Conservatives.

Two Cabinet ministers and several junior government members quit, and more than 20 lawmakers have submitted letters of no confidence in May. Forty-eight such letters – or 15 per cent of Conservative lawmakers – are needed for a leadership challenge vote.

Dominic Raab, who quit Thursday as Brexit secretary, said “there is one thing missing and that is political will and resolve”.

“If we cannot close this deal on reasonable terms, we need to be very honest with the country that we will not be bribed and blackmailed or bullied and we will walk away,” he said.

Many pro-Brexit Conservatives want a clean break with the EU and argue that the close trade ties between the UK and the EU called for in the deal would leave Britain a vassal state, with no way to independently disentangle itself from the bloc.

The draft agreement envisions Britain leaving the EU as planned on March 29, but remaining inside the bloc’s single market and bound by its rules until the end of Decem-

ber 2020. Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn called the deal a “one-way agreement” in which the EU “calls all the shots”.

He said his party will vote against the deal and demanded that May return to Brussels and renegotiate the divorce agreement.

May’s Conservatives don’t t have a parliamentary majority, and it’s not clear if her deal can successfully pass Parliament.

Police pursue two leads in McCann case Police have told the parents of Madeleine McCann that they are ‘hopeful’ for a result as they pursue two vital new leads.

The Operation Grange team, who had been thought to be focusing on just one, told Kate and Gerry during a meeting thought to be at their Leicestershire home, that they had “two specific and active” lines of inquiry.

Previously police confirmed they believed the blonde child was snatched by a paedophile gang who may have smuggled her over the border or grabbed during a botched burglary at the holiday complex.

They have also been keen to identify a woman in purple seen hanging around the holiday flat.

A senior Government source added: “Police seeking special grant funding have needed to justify exactly what the money would be spent on, who they are chasing and why.

“They have had to outline their intended work in full detail and careful consideration has been given but we cannot divulge any aspects of that while there is an ongoing operation.”

Harassment claims The Veronicas’ Jess Origliasso has publicly rebuked Ruby Rose, claiming she’s the victim of “continued harassment” by her ex-girlfriend.

Origliasso, 33, was responding to a comment from the Orange Is The New Black star on an Instagram photo of herself and new boyfriend Kai Carlton, taken at her twin sister’s wedding recently. “Congratulations! So happy for you both,” Rose wrote under the picture of her ex-girlfriend. It seemed innocent enough, but sparked a furious response from Origliasso.

Diddy’s ‘nightmare’ Sean “Diddy” Combs has spoken out about the death of his ex Kim Porter, in an emotional social media post. Three days after Porter’s death was confirmed, Combs made a statement about the passing of the mother of his children, calling it a “nightmare”. “For the last three days I’ve been trying to wake up out of this nightmare. But I haven’t. I don’t know what I’m going to do without you baby. I miss you so much.” He also posted a video himself and Porter in a series of photos and clips set to music.

He continued: “We were more than best friends, we were more than soulmates.”

Violence – no-one should condone it T

hey rode in with the ferocity of something much more sinister, but the leather-clad visitors to some Mid Canterbury schools yesterday weren’t there for intimidation, but instead to provide information.

Unfortunately, society’s natural reactions would cause people to take a step back at the sight of dark-clothed riders rolling into town looking rather ominous, but the arrival of the White Ribbon Riders yesterday was a positive step forward to delivering a really important message to our younger minds.

There’s no escaping from the fact that this group of incredible people look and appear, on first glance anyway, as another gang

burning their way down our highways – but spend some time with them, understand what they’re all about and you’ll realise these are a bunch of really good people.

And we’re lucky to have groups like the White Ribbon Riders in our society who are prepared to try and shatter the common misconceptions but use the power of their image to get the point across.

For a young mind the prospect of a group of people showing up to school in leather and on motorbikes would be enough to get most minds engaged and if the message being put across is strong enough – it’s more than likely going to stick with the young minds who are listening.

We try and get a lot of really important messages out there – but often our delivery isn’t quite what it should be – particularly when dealing with younger members of our community.

They are more impressionable. Something that is seen as being cool, is more likely to result in a positive influence than yet another slide on the projector screen up against the whiteboard

in a classroom (they still do that right?)

The annual White Ribbon appeal is an important one for us here in New Zealand.

This country has a bad history of violence against women and it’s something that no-one, and I really do mean no-one, should condone in any walk of life.

And by spreading that message to school children through the use of powerful mentors, we can ingrain in their memory that it’s not okay to be violent towards not only women, but anyone in general.

White Ribbon Day, November 25, is about celebrating the many men willing to show leadership and commitment to promoting

safe, healthy relationships within families and encouraging men to challenge each other on attitudes and behaviour that are abusive.

As a community, this should be a real goal for our district.

Our district court news often features sad examples of violence against women and what a result it would be to go through next year without a mention in those same pages.

But it’s often the unknown that does the most damage. The stories you don’t hear about and the cases where justice is not served.

And that’s where the challenge to men to call each other out on attitudes and behaviour comes in.

Will you stand up and fight the good fight?

Where to now on capital gains tax?

L

ike a ship negotiating choppy waters New Zealand is edging its way closer to a capital gains tax.

It was included in the work programme of the Tax Working Group and the Government proposes to take a capital gains tax (CGT) proposal to the next election – it will not be effective before then. The one limitation placed on the TWG was that a capital gains tax must not apply to the family home.

This reduces (but doesn’t eliminate) the risk of voter backlash, but it also reduces a CGT’s potential to address problems such as housing affordability, inequality, and the tax advantage enjoyed by owner occupier housing compared to other investments.

It would also mean it raises less revenue.

The TWG has had a wide range of issues to consider but its clear a capital gains tax has been its biggest area of focus.

When it put out its interim report in September, a number of issues were kicked to the kerb, including land tax, changes to GST, and progressive company tax.

This enables the TWG to focus its remaining time until February on the outstanding issues, particularly extending the taxation of capital income.

would be good for stepping-stone farmers.

If a CGT is to be imposed upon us, then at the minimum it should be on realisation of the asset and Feds argues the tax should only apply to assets acquired after the introduction date.

There should also be rollover relief to cater for trading-up and intergenerational succession.

Even with these measures Federated Farmers thinks a CGT is a dog. It will make our well-regarded tax system more complex, and will impose hefty costs both in compliance for taxpayers and in administration for Inland Revenue.

More generally, a CGT will not solve housing affordability, will not raise as much money as hoped, and it will have a harmful impact on retirement savings through, for example, heavily taxing KiwiSaver returns.

Overall, better to turn the ship around and send it back where it came from.

YOUR VIEW Disillusioned What on earth is wrong with our miserable council. They are very fast at pointing fingers at people and getting them to do what is right.

But when it comes to them, they back off and will not spend a dime finding out if they are in the right or wrong.

Or, in St John’s case go to the trouble of finding the status of the land. Nobody seems to want to do their job in that place.

They seem to be all running scared. They don’t even answer their phones after the receptionist puts you through.

With the St John’s case, why are the council not donating the carpark land to them? Every one of us needs their help at anytime of the day or night and the councillors are no exception. Also, what

better place for St John to be centralised in Ashburton with easy access out to any direction they are called out to.

So, maybe our rates could be spent better on a life and death saving business. Instead of sticking trees in front of people’s houses that grow that big they upset the house drainage systems, ruin footpaths and roads with their roots, cut the sun off from getting into people’s houses and block people’s views.

Not to mention all the leaves that have to be cleaned up around and also in town businesses and blocking up drains, that don’t get cleared.

Take Tinwald school’s road crossing area on Jane Street – disgusting. Also, you could give it a miss buying concrete sculptures this year and put it towards a very good cause like St John. As for

three councillors turning up for the St John meeting – that says it all.

Art gallery and heritage centre On behalf of the Citizens’ Association, I write to express the association’s concern with the Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre’s leaking and humidity issues.

This is of great concern in light of the commencement of initial work for the civic centre buildings.

Are these buildings going to be designed by people experienced in the requirements for civic and library buildings not just generic

buildings that maybe look good but are not specifically designed for their purpose?

The Ashburton Trust Event Centre is a good example of a building designed to be fit for purpose and often receives compliments from people using this facility.

How can we, as ratepayers, be assured that the council is taking all possible steps to ensure the new buildings will also be designed to be fit for purpose and that no corners are being cut.

We want to be confident that Ashburton has the best possible buildings which will serve the public well for the next however many years, and that the initial building cost is the final capital cost.

Beeston heads support trust

Dairy farmer Frances Beeston is the new co-ordinator for the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust welfare team that is helping farmers dealing with mycoplasma bovis.

She has moved from within the welfare team to take on the coordinator role.

“I have been working as a facilitator with the trust and wanted to step up and provide support for our farmers. We don’t want anyone slipping through the cracks and want them supported.”

She replaces Ange Cushnie, who resigned last month from the M. bovis welfare role in protest at an unspecified decision made by the Ministry for Primary Industries’ national office.

Beeston said she was unable to comment on Cushnie’s departure.

MPI policy is not to comment on contractor arrangements.

Beeston said the mood of farmers dealing with M. bovis was varied and depended on their back story, their financial position and, until lately, concerns the season would be dry.

She said the kind winter and reasonably good spring had been boosted by rain over the past two weeks which would secure feed over the next six weeks for farmers.

A good season would not remove the stress of handling the cattle disease, but it would be one less worry for them, she said.

Rural Support Trust Mid Canterbury chairman Peter Reveley said biosecurity and disease control was at the forefront of the trust members’ minds.

He said he was “enormously proud’’ of the trust people work-

ing on behalf of the wider community. “Angela and her team have offered a great deal of knowledge, empathy and understanding in the past three months and, with the help of the facilitation team, have established a good rapport with farmers and rural professionals alike.”

Canterbury shearers Tony Dobbs and Allan Oldfield confirmed their places at next year’s world shearing and woolhandling championships when their blades shearing selection series finished in Christchurch last Friday.

Fairlie farmer Dobbs won the national corriedale blades shearing championship final at the New Zealand Agricultural Show, formerly known as the Canterbury A&P Show and Ger-

aldine shearer Oldfield placed fourth.

The results advanced them as overall winner and runner-up in a series of eight competitions which started at Reefton in February.

They become the first part of the Shearing Sports New Zealand team for the world championships to be held in Le Dorat, France, on July 1-7.

Dobbs first represented New Zealand at a world championships in 1988, while Oldfield makes the team for the first time.

BY GUY TRAFFORD Last Sunday, while many of us were watching the All Blacks play Ireland, Radio NZ was airing a programme on the potential of genetically modified or engineered organisms particularly in agriculture.

The discussion has gained traction on the back of an open report, outgoing chief scientist to the Prime Minister Sir Peter Gluckman has penned, in which he suggests the time is right to re-examine New Zealand’s decision to put a hold on any use of GE or GM organisms except for use in medicines.

Sir Peter and other commentators seem to feel that New Zealand risks being left behind by not endorsing the use of this technology especially when looking for new “novelty” products to woo consumers and more seriously providing tools to help combat droughts and reduce carbon emissions. However, in this case, technology is leaps and bounds ahead of public perceptions, both here in New Zealand and internationally.

Currently at least 64 regional governments in Europe have declared themselves GE free and New Zealand faces the risk of losing its competitive advantage and position as a premier food producer through adopting GE technology and this is likely to outweigh any benefits that GE may provide.

Assurances from scientists of the relative low risks of any harm that may come from using GE is likely to fall upon deaf ears when it comes to consuming food, which for many is a very personal choice.

Government, in this case, seems to be aware of the battle that could ensue if they promoted the idea that regulations should be relaxed and to date have no plans to even examine GE’s opportunities.

If the option of releasing GE technology did gain traction, I suspect we could see opposition similar to that when nuclear warships were going to visit New Zealand and people’s passions would be raised to a point where arguments over the potential benefits would be drowned out in the clamour.

If the general public have concerns over increases in irrigation and its potential negative side-effects, despite what many see as an obvious solution to food production constraints, then it is likely we will see far more engagement in this debate and go to far more strident actions to make their feelings known.

grown food, the market place is giving a very clear message that it wants less not more interventions into the food chain and is prepared to pay for it.

Markets Sheep While saleyards continue to set the benchmark for both lamb and mutton prices, the schedule has continued to slip.

For all grades of meat and wool, a major driver for the reductions can be driven back to what the dollar is doing against other currencies.

At 68 cents against the US dollar and over 60 cents against the Euro, the strength in our dollar while of benefit to importers and consumers, especially at the petrol pumps, is having a markedly negative effect on exporters.

On a more positive note. The regular southerly weather conditions and accompanying rainfall are keeping grass growth active and that makes up for a lot of the negativity coming out of the market place.

Wool With the latest sale being held at Christchurch’s New Zealand Agricultural Show it drew plenty of interest, however, that did not necessarily convert to higher prices, although the finer end did achieve reasonable prices in the context of a falling market in Australia, but the same cannot be said for the coarse wools with another marked drop in returns.

Overall prices were down 4-9 per cent on the previous sale which also was falling.

Venison Venison is also dropping and the $11 prices paid for the past six months or so look to become a memory.

Dairy Internationally, prices for dairy products have held but, as with all exports, the strengthening dollar has had its way and the prices have all dropped at the farm gate price. At least for dairy there is time for a recovery before the final prices are settled on.

5G launch date named

By Chris Keall Spark wants to launch a 5G mobile network on July 1, 2020, managing director Simon Moutter revealed yesterday.

Surrounded by members of Emirates Team NZ, the telco boss officially started a countdown clock yesterday at his company’s new 5G Lab at Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter.

Moutter said a pre-commercial 5G service would help Team NZ analyse performance data and stream video in real-time as it prepares for the 2021 America’s Cup. He said it was possible 5G would allow viewers to watch Cup races via virtual reality headsets, with immersive high definition video fed from Team NZ’s boat in real time during races.

He added that on an everyday level, mobile data traffic was roughly doubling every 12 months, 5G (which is much faster than the 4G or fourth generation technology used by mobile

networks today) would be needed just to make sure cellular network didn’t get congested over the next few years.

“Data volumes will start to exceed 4G’s sensible limits around 2020/2021.”

Moutter said for Spark to hit its July 2020 deadline, the government has to auction spectrum early to mid next year.

Although Spark’s desired 5G launch date is 509 days away, it will take a lot of time to build and test the network, and overcome issues such as interference, Moutter said – no doubt mindful of his company’s disastrous “XT” 3G network launch, when it was first taken to the High Court

by Vodafone over interference, then suffered multi-day outages caused by technical glitches.

But Moutter also conceded it was tricky to give an exact timeline when Communications Minister Kris Faafoi and MBIE have yet to say when the government will hold a 5G spectrum auction – or confirm whether it

Landlord’s $48.3m profit New Zealand’s biggest commercial and retail landlord Kiwi Property reported a $400,000 increase in net profit in its half-year result. Net profit after tax for the September 30 half-year was $48.3m, up on the previous corresponding $47.9m.

However, net rental income dropped from last year’s $95.1m to $89.9m. Gearing at 29.4 per cent is down slightly on last year’s 29.7 per cent. Funds from operations dropped from last year’s $54.2m to $52.3m although Kiwi said that decrease reflected asset sales.

Its portfolio includes Papanui Northlands.

The Spark boss said his company was talking constructively with the government, but he added he was getting “impatient” as other countries moved ahead.

Neither Faafoi nor MBIE offered an immediate response, but both have said the auction will take place in time for Spark, Vodafone and 2degrees to build 5G networks that can be launched in early 2020.

The 5G auction is a potential windfall for the government.

Spark ($149m), Vodafone ($66m) and 2degrees ($44m) spent a total of $259m on various chunks of 4G spectrum in 2014. But as reserve prices are set, Faafoi also has to weigh the fact that the cost of bids will ultimately be passed on to consumers.

Faafoi and GCSB Minister Andrew Little are also yet to confirm whether Spark partner Huawei will be allowed as a 5G technology supplier.

The risks are mounting against Fonterra holding its current forecast milk payout and this week’s GlobalDairyTrade auction could be yet another nail in its coffin.

The auction results will be released early tomorrow.

Fonterra’s current forecast is a rate of $6.25-to-$6.50 a kilogram of milksolids but Mark Lister, the head of wealth research at Craigs Investment Partners, says the trends in both dairy pricing and the renewed strength in the kiwi dollar could see the actual payout settle closer to $6.00 or $6.25.

“Dairy hasn’t been going well.

“It’s just been steadily drifting lower and now we’ve got the New Zealand dollar going in the other direction as well,” Lister says.

The headline GDT index fell 2.1 per cent at the last auction and that was the 15th decline in the past 18 fortnightly auctions.

“Dairy prices are now 17.7 per cent below the 2018 peak back in May and 6.2 per cent lower yearto-date,” he says.

Global dairy products are priced in US dollars and the New Zealand dollar has been trending higher against the greenback since early November.

The kiwi gained more than 2 per cent against the US dollar last week, taking its gains for November so far to more than 5.5 per cent, although it is still down more than 3 per cent from where it began this year.

The kiwi’s rise has been fuelled in part by the unexpected fall in the unemployment rate to 3.9 per cent in the September quarter, a

more than 10-year low.

Lister says most people are becoming more convinced that Fonterra won’t make its current forecast.

“It’s hard to see a big turnaround in the trend this week – the most we can probably hope for is some stability – they’ve got a long way to go to get back to where they were.”

Still, “anything that starts with a six is probably satisfactory, but obviously higher would be better.”

Usually, New Zealand dollar strength means the US dollar is retreating, but not at the moment – the greenback is still rising.

It’s just that the New Zealand dollar has been rising even more.

One factor fuelling the US dollar’s rise this year has been expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep raising interest rates as the US economy continues to perform strongly.

However, the Fed’s vice chair, Richard Clarida, put a little spoke in that wheel last week when he said that monetary policy is getting closer to a neutral level.

Lister says that, despite this, he still expects the Fed to raise interest rates again in December.

The Fed is very data-driven, Lister says, and data last week showed inflation running at an annual pace of 2.5 per cent and that retail sales rose 0.8 per cent in October.

But this sort of data is all backward looking.

“When you look at the company reporting season and the outlook statements, there’s a little more caution creeping in,” Lister says.

“There’s a lot of talk about things slowing down and the impact of tariffs. I think that’s why the share market’s been as jumpy as it is.”

can take up to 45 minutes before it is browned and blistered enough to make great crackling.

Keep an eye on it to ensure it crackles but doesn’t burn.

■ Reduce the oven temperature to 180°C. Add one cup of the wine to the dish, scatter onions and garlic cloves around pork, then cover with foil and cook for 60 minutes. Using a sharp knife, score the apples around the ‘waist’ to stop them bursting while cooking. Remove the roasting dish from the oven and remove the foil (carefully to avoid steam burns). Add the apples to the dish, baste each one with the roasting juices and add a sprinkle of salt.

■ Continue cooking for a further 30 minutes, uncovered, until the apples and pork are cooked through, the crackling will crisp up again during this time too.

Prick meat with a sharp knife – if the juices run clear, it’s done; if not, pop it back in the oven for another 10-15 minutes. Remove from the oven and remove the pork and apples carefully from the roasting dish. Set aside for the pork to rest for 10 minutes while you make the gravy.

■ To make gravy, pour away most of the fat from the roasting dish and add the remaining half cup of white wine. Simmer until the liquid has reduced by half. Add half a cup of water and scrape all the gooey goodness off the bottom of the roasting dish, simmer and season with salt and pepper to taste. Pass this through a sieve into a serving jug.

■ Serve sliced pork with cooked apples and gravy.

A band in wartime

T

here were a few gaps in the ranks of the Ashburton Temperance Band when it joined a street parade to the Theatre Royal as a prelude to the town’s first patriotic concert on August 19, 1914 – a small sign of things to come.

For four years, war’s disrupting tentacles reached further and further into the country’s homes, businesses, workplaces, professions and all manner of leisure pursuits.

Male-dominated activities, of course, were most affected and the band movement was almost exclusively male.

All in all, the Temperance Band fared not too badly throughout the war years. Some 25 members served overseas, several were wounded, but all returned.

Even so, filling the local ranks to maintain about 25 to 30 players was difficult enough without patriotism’s increasing demands on the band’s services.

Stalwarts of the band – men beyond enlistment age or unsuited for war service – carried a heavier and heavier load.

Already in 1915, S. B. Dennis, the band’s conductor, started a junior band to bring on promising players.

Bandsmen H. A. Philpott and H. Christensen enlisted immediately, followed by D. H. Moore.

Five were farewelled the next year. Eighteen men had departed by the beginning of 1917 and the number continued to rise.

All were given fitting send-offs, a variety of parting gifts and wished a safe return.

New bands News of departed bandsmen occasionally appeared in the Guardian.

Some served with regimental bands, others served in the front lines.

Christensen and Philpott were selected for the new band attached to the Canterbury Regiment, Main Expeditionary Force.

Moore was a bugler with the 1st Reinforcements. G. Hosken junior and C. Jessop went into the band of the 3rd Battalion of the Rifle Brigade.

One of the most exciting moments for the members was the success of the band of the 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade, in the military display at a competition held in France in June 1918. The band’s drum-major, responsible for all the drill and marching manoeuvres involved, was Ashburton’s W. R. Tucker.

The band had other associations with the war besides these rather personal interactions. In 1915 it became the band of the Ashburton Civil Defence Corps.

This secured a small grant from the Defence Ministry for services at parades.

Becoming the regimental band of the territorial 8th South Canterbury Mounted Rifles a year later brought a more direct connection with the war effort and an increased grant and additional duties.

Besides attending regimental parades and special occasions,

the band was involved in lengthy training camps although the bandsmen did not carry arms or participate in battle manoeuvres.

The band still maintained a civic role. Its most consistent task was to escort Ashburton’s enlisted men from the drill shed to the railway station as they began the journey to the Trentham or Featherston military camps.

Between 1915 and 1918 some 40 drafts left Ashburton to join the reinforcements. Along East Street they marched, crowds cheering, business temporarily suspended, the band in front.

At the station, patriotic tunes boosted the morale of those departing, their families and supporters. Tipperary and Auld Lang Syne were favourites, and as the train moved away, the band played on. Happier moments came when they were on hand at the station to welcome returning local soldiers.

But the impact of war went deeper. The experience and expertise lost with the enlisted bandsmen must have affected performance standards. By 1917 every effort had to be made to maintain a state of efficiency.

Financially, the band suffered as many pre-war fee-paying engagements transformed into patriotic affairs with payment for services waived. The council’s small allowance for municipal open-air concerts supplemented the defence grant but always there was the cost of instrument maintenance and additions to repertoire.

The band’s activities in 1918 seem representative of its wartime load.

It turned out on 64 occasions – 11 for reinforcements (departures and welcomes) and 53 civic and

military/patriotic appearances for pictures, shows, races, sports, military funerals and municipal concerts, plus twice-weekly practices.

In an appreciative gesture Mayor R. Galbraith personally presented the band with the music of a new march in 1917.

Public gratitude came at war’s end by supporting the band to eventually raise over £700 (about $67,500 today) for a set of new instruments. No better thanks was possible.

Trio to learn fate Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft are expected to learn whether their bans will be changed early this week. Cricket Australia’s seven-person board is to meet via a phone hook-up to make a decision on whether to uphold, partially keep or overturn the suspensions imposed on the trio following the Cape Town test ball-tampering scandal. Several options could be considered for the three before Bancroft’s ban from all top-level cricket ends on December 29, with Smith and Warner due to return three months later.

Rain halts Kruger’s charge

Rain brought Sunday’s 60-over rep cricket match between Mid Canterbury and North Otago at the Ashburton Domain to a premature end.

The match was Mid Canterbury’s final hit-out before their first Hawke Cup match this weekend – also at the Ashburton Domain, against South Canterbury – and it ended with Mid Canterbury just one wicket down but 93 runs behind North Otago’s total of 183 all out.

North Otago have been the thorn in Mid Canterbury’s side in recent seasons with Francois Mostert in their line-up, and after winning the toss elected to bat first, but were possibly questioning their decision early on.

Losing the wicket of Jeremiah Shields on just the fourth ball of

the innings with no runs on the board wasn’t the best start for the visitors, and when Brady Kingan and Stephan Grobler fell in successive balls to the bowling of Will Graham, North Otago were in trouble at 24/3.

But that brought Mostert to the crease and he, together with Cormac Hassett, set about rebuilding North Otago’s innings.

The pair put together an 81run partnership before Hassett was bowled by William Southby for 39.

Mostert kept going though and top scored with 82 before becoming Mid Canterbury’s sixth scalp, and the rest of the wickets fell quickly from there, with North Otago all out for 183.

Jay Houston was the pick of Mid Canterbury’s bowlers after cleaning up the tail and finishing with 4/31 off 9.2 overs, while

Deon Biggs took 3/31 off 17 overs.

Mid Canterbury’s reply got off to a steady start, with Nick Gilbert being the one and only wicket to fall with the score on 29.

Gilbert’s demise brought the top-scorer from Mid Canterbury’s win the previous weekend over Canterbury Country – Des Kruger – to the crease, and he picked up where he’d left off, notching up his second consecutive half century.

Kruger had the domain’s duck pond in his sights and smashed four sixes and five fours on his way to a quick-fire 51 not out before the rain set in, with Mid Canterbury 90/1 off 21.2 overs in reply.

Grobler picked up North Otago’s only wicket of the game, but he was then smashed by Kruger, finishing with the figures of

1/30 off just three overs.

Mid Canterbury’s attention now turns to their opening Hawke Cup zone match against South Canterbury, which will get under way on Saturday morning at the Ashburton Domain.

Hawke Cup games are played over two days and included in Mid Canterbury’s southern zone are current Hawke Cup holders Southland, which meant Mid Canterbury’s games would be over and done with earlier than usual this season in order for Southland to be ready for their first Cup challenge in early February.

Mid Canterbury will play South Canterbury this weekend, followed by Southland in Invercargill on December 8 and 9, Otago Country in Ashburton on January 12 and 13, and North Otago in Oamaru on January 19 and 20.

James had 19 points in the first quarter to set the tone. The Lakers, who led by as many as 21 and never trailed, have improved to 9-7 on the season.

The 51 points is a season high for James and the most he’s scored against Miami; he had 47 against the Heat twice. It was the 13th 50-point game of his career and his first win against the Heat since he left them after the 2014 NBA Finals. Methven golfers beat the stormy weather Playing a shot as light rain fell on Saturday morning at the Methven Golf Club’s two-day multi-sponsored tournament was Sharon Burrell-Smith. Methven member Burrell-Smith and her partner Sandra Marr, also a Methven member, took out the ladies title, with the Mayfield pairing of Liz Gunatunga and Tina Putze were second. For the men, Christchurch-based Methven member Wayne Collins and his son Chris – whose father and grandfather are life members at the Methven Golf Club – took out the men’s prize, with two young local lads Matt Mason and Greg Overall second. Despite a dismal weather forecast, a great weekend was had, Methven’s golf director Barry Wackwitz said. Light rain fell on Saturday morning, but the really bad weather didn’t hit until after the tournament had finished on Sunday. Wackwitz said the tournament was well supported by local businesses, who donated around $11,000 worth of prizes.

Thompson takes Championship Lexi Thompson was the best this week and Ariya Jutanugarn was the best all season on the LPGA. Neither left any doubt about that yesterday.

Thompson shot a final-round 70 to finish at 18-under 270 and win the season-ending Tour Championship by four strokes from Nelly Korda.

The win makes this the sixth consecutive year that Thompson has won at least once, extending the longest active streak on the LPGA Tour.

“It’s very gratifying,” Thompson said.

“This is such a special event for me in general, growing up in Florida. ... It was just very gratifying.”

Jutanugarn took the other two big prizes that were up for grabs this week, clinching the year long Race to the CME Globe prize – and the $1 million bonus that comes with that – as well as the Vare Trophy for winning the season’s scoring title.

It was the 10th career win for Thompson, who grabbed the lead on Saturday and kept it the rest of the way.

Barrett family holds the key

T

he All Blacks are forever talking about the need to strike the right balance.

It’s usually in a risk versus reward scenario or finding the right blend of youth and experience.

But in the wake of the loss to Ireland, they face an altogether much harder balancing act.

The coaching team will have to determine how much they need to react to one defeat with a vigorous private examination of their public conviction that the difference between the two teams was finishing.

Ireland had two chances and scored one while Steve Hansen says his side made four and blew them all.

That’s big game football, super tight margins and on another day the All Blacks would have won with room to spare.

Goodness knows they have a track record that says this isn’t wishful thinking and profligacy as witnessed in Dublin is hardly endemic or even close to being a recurring theme.

But as much as the 16-9 defeat could be filed as a one-off loss inflicted by an excellent team who were just that little bit more clinical when it mattered, it feels a little more significant than that.

The defeat in Dublin brought to the surface this sense of fragility that has been lingering around the All Blacks since they lost to the Lions in Wellington last year.

They do a pretty good job papering over the crack, but it is indisputable it is there: the best teams can lay bare the fact that the All Blacks don’t have the breadth of game yet to ignite

their attack in any circumstance.

They are not, as they once were, a triple threat team.

Not effectively or consistently and while their running game has reached unprecedented levels of brilliance since the last World Cup, their kicking, aerial work and decision-making have all regressed.

Maybe not so much in their component skills – but they probably have – more in the ability to put them all together in the right way at the right time and find a way to break or escape a smothering defence.

And this is where the question of balance kicks in.

The All Blacks, says Hansen, have been trying to play differently this year.

The specifics on that he won’t elaborate on but admits that the transition from the old way to new way is taking longer than imagined.

Some of the decision-making is being compromised by players not all being attuned to the new demands – the old habits are hard to break being as ingrained as they are.

Frustrating yes but patience will pay dividend says Hansen and his record is such that he has earned a significant degree of trust.

But is the All Blacks’ stuttering attack or continued inability to ignite against defensively-minded, confrontational teams purely attributable to a bumpy tactical conversion?

It comes back to balance again and whether all the blame can be put there or whether as much consideration has to be given to the possibility that the backline personnel isn’t quite right.

Ireland, after England had hinted at it, exposed the truth

that the All Blacks don’t have the right combination in their back three with Damian McKenzie at fullback.

As much as the world loves seeing the smaller man in the test arena, his size, or lack of it, is a problem at fullback and the All Blacks can’t pretend they haven’t seen that.

That word balance comes up again in relation to the back three in that they don’t have the right one with McKenzie at fullback and Rieko Ioane and Ben Smith on the wings.

To be serious about winning the World Cup the All Blacks need two aerial, all-round footballers in the back three with the power game of Ioane staying where it is on the left wing.

They could shift Ben Smith to his preferred role of fullback, but then who on the wing would give them the right overall blend?

Waisake Naholo is not a kick-chase player and would be ruthlessly targeted by the likes of Johnny Sexton and Owen Farrell.

Nehe Milner-Skudder isn’t in possession of the right skill-set either, George Bridge is but is maybe not quite ready for regular tests and while Israel Dagg has the aerial portfolio and booming right boot, it’s hard to believe he’s still got the top end pace and agility to cut it in test football.

All roads at this stage, then, appear to lead to the Barrett family as the solution to balancing the back three.

Jordie could be the answer at fullback in the World Cup as he is an aerial player – a kicker, catcher and tackler and his skills leans towards the conservative which is no bad thing in knockout football.

But his confidence appears

shot and he’s been all over the place since his Wellington meltdown and even if he comes right mentally next year, his brother Beauden would still be the better option.

From being a red-herring debate earlier this year, the question of whether to start Beauden Barrett or Richie Mo’unga at first-five is now one the All Blacks coaches can’t be pig-headed about.

The All Blacks do appear to have a better balance to their backline when Mo’unga comes off the bench and Barrett reverts to fullback.

The pace, flow and intensity of tests are often different by the time the All Blacks make this positional switch, but still, even accounting for that, the set-up looks better.

It has that intangible quality of feeling better, too and the All Blacks are right to be wedded to the belief they need two playmakers, but Barrett and Mo’unga feels instinctively the right combination rather than Barrett and McKenzie.

The way the All Blacks play, fullback and first-five interchange roles fluidly and relentlessly and to avoid any sense of there being a lack of faith in Barrett’s work at first-five or any kind of perception that Mo’unga has surpassed him, then he could continue to wear No. 10 with the latter wearing No. 15.

Team comes first for the All Blacks and what is starting to be hard to avoid wondering is whether the team needs Barrett at fullback or alternatively, at the very least, Mo’unga to be on the field from the start with a licence to be highly involved as a first receiver even if he is listed at fullback.

Quarter-final clash distinct possibility All Blacks v Ireland in a Rugby World Cup final.

It seems the destined fixture for rugby’s top two nations but how about an early meeting in the quarter-finals?

It’s not too far-fetched a prospect.

All it would take would be for the All Blacks or Ireland to suffer a pool game defeat and one of the sides will be eliminated in the first week of the knockout phase.

The All Blacks have never lost a pool game at the World Cup, the only nation to do so, but Steve Hansen’s men face a big encounter in their opening game at next year’s tournament against South Africa.

The All Blacks should go into the Springboks test as favourites but we’ve seen this season South Africa are not only capable of going toe-totoe with New Zealand but will have the confidence to cause an upset following their win in Wellington.

Ireland’s biggest threat in pool play should be Scotland, a side they lost to last year.

The two Six Nations rivals face off a day after the All Blacks-Springboks encounter, at the same ground in Yokohama.

Granted this is a new Irish team, one that have proven they can beat the All Blacks, however they have a poor World Cup record having never reached the semi-finals in eight attempts.

If the All Blacks and Ireland do win their respective pools then they will be on the opposite side of the knockout draw and could only meet in the final, or bronze final.

Yesterday Ireland coach Joe Schmidt wasn’t interested in talking about World Cup chances.

“The World Cup in 11 months’ time? People will postulate about who is where and who is favourite.

“It’s a nebulous thing for us because all we can tangibly control is our preparation and then go out searching for a performance,” Schmidt said after the 16-9 victory, Ireland’s first at home over the All Ardie Savea and Kieran Read try to bring down Tadgh FurPHOTO AP Blacks.

Big calls coming up All Blacks coach Steve Hansen will make a decision on his future before the end of this year. Hansen has been at the helm since earning promotion from assistant in 2012.

In that time he has carved an 88.4 per cent win rate, with the first loss to Ireland in Dublin his eighth across 95 tests in charge. Ireland coach Joe Schmidt has indicated he, too, will make a call on whether to continue after next year’s World Cup, or return home to New Zealand, by the end of this month.

Hansen revealed his own mind would soon be made up about whether to stick with the All Blacks beyond 2019.

Zverev stuns Djokovic Alexander Zverev has upset Novak Djokovic to claim the biggest title of his career with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the ATP Finals. Another loss for Jaguars Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was far from perfect until the fourth quarter and that was all that mattered for the Pittsburgh Steelers in their 20-16 NFL win at the Jacksonville Jaguars. One week after Roethlisberger had a perfect quarterback rating, he overcame three interceptions and a 16-0 deficit by leading two late scoring drives. CROSS, Steven Bruce – It is with much sadness that the family of Steve announce his death, on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at Nurse Maude Hospice, aged 68 years. Treasured and dearly loved husband, soul mate and best friend of Marilyn Cross, and cherished father and father-in-law of Nick and Siobhan Cross, Rachael and Andrew Greer and much loved and special Papa and Mapa of Sam, Bill, Izzie and Rosie. Much loved son of the late Clifford and late Paula Cross and dear brother and friend of Karen Rose and Rob Garlick, treasured awesome uncle to Ben and Emilie Gray, Kirsten Gray and Andrew Broughton, Jonathon and Jamie Rose, and Matt Rose.

Special great uncle to Manon and Tom, Ella and Oli, and Taylor. Special thanks for the wonderful care and love from the staff at Nurse Maude Hospice, Merivale, and from Dr Penny Holdaway and the Ashburton district nurses.

Simulation key for Team NZ

BY CHRISTOPHER REIVE Team New Zealand will take a different approach to their preparations for the 2021 America’s Cup, with the team at this stage unlikely to sail a scaled down model of the AC75.

While challengers Ineos Team UK, American Magic and Luna Rossa have all launched scaled down vessels, Team New Zealand designer Dan Bernasconi told the Herald they were in no rush to get

a boat on the water.

“We’ve put our efforts into simulation,” he said.

“We believe a lot in the skill of our simulation engineers and being able to develop stuff that way.

It worked for us last time, so while it’s good to see other teams proving the concept, we’re pretty confident in our path.”

While other teams have been able to test the concept on the water, some have experienced issues including capsizes.

While Team New Zealand stage dry running simulations, Bernasconi said they had eyes on the other teams to stay on top of how they were tracking in their preparations.

“We’ve got guys over in the States and the UK looking at how those boats are sailing and, yeah, we’re paying close attention to what’s happening.

“We are gaining a little bit from that. Hopefully they’re not able to see what we’re doing in the simu-

lation world behind closed doors.”

Team New Zealand chief executive Grant Dalton has mentioned how important the use of technology including simulations will be before the 2021 regatta, and Team New Zealand have partnered with Spark to make the most of their proposed 5G network.

Spark have set a July 1, 2020 date by which they envision the network will be available commercially.

Team New Zealand are likely to

have access to the network prior to that date, which will allow them to take their testing to a whole new level.

The network will allow the team to get data points such as boat speeds, loads and pressures straight from the boat and back to the design team on land.

This will allow them to have it ready for sailors upon their return to land as opposed to the design team having to go out with the crew.
