Branje calls time on campaigns

For two years Jen Branje was the public face of a fight to keep New Zealand water in Kiwi hands.

Yesterday she announced she was retiring from a position that saw her become a high profile anti-water sale campaigner on the back of a fight to stop the sale of Ashburton land to a water bottling company.

The land was owned by Ashburton District Council and the intended sale was to water bottler NZ Pure Blue.

Her campaign against the sale of a site that became known as Lot 9 in the council’s business estate was fought under the Bung the Bore banner, but both the Facebook and Twitter pages maintained under this name have now closed.

Branje says she’s heading for obscurity, saying the fight that needs to be fought to protect New Zealand’s water is bigger than just one person.

“It’s time for New Zealand communities to take responsibility for their waterways and hold their councils to account

“Expectation from the general public that one person may have the solution to New Zealand’s

water woes is completely unreasonable and has become an insurmountable pressure. I have worked constantly to bring New

Zealand’s water issues to the fore,” she said.

The crusade had taken its toll on her emotionally, physically and financially but it showed very clearly that New Zealand needed an independent group such as a water commission to manage its water resources, Branje said.

“Successive Governments have failed miserably in protecting our rivers, lakes and aquifers.

It’s time New Zealanders took charge in a collaborative effort to stop this pillage and degradation.”

As well as leading the campaign against the Lot 9 sale, Branje was active in raising awareness of the deal to pipe water to a south Westland port to ship off-shore.

“I’m now being bombarded by people saying ‘are you going to challenge the West Coast decision’. They must have some construed idea that I’m a million dollar organisation. This has all been voluntary,” she said.

She became involved in campaigning against water sales after she was told she couldn’t

water her garden because hosing restrictions were in place and yet one kilometre away the council planned to sell land with a consent to take 45 million litres of water to a water bottling company.

“I got grumpy and it just escalated. It became an octopus that reached into every corner of the country, but the burden just became too great.

“It’s easy for people to sit at their computer and comment on Facebook that we need to do this or do that but not do anything themselves.”

The people of Ashburton, however, did do something.

They stood up and fought for their water, Branje said.

“I’m very proud of them and so very grateful to everyone who volunteered their time for the Nationwide Water Rallies. My petition for legislative change to water bottling and consent processes is with Select Committee and I will continue to advocate for New Zealand’s water.”

After giving 10,000 hours of her life to water issues, Branje said it was time to stand down.

Time now right to start planning for a new future

With its role as a landlord now firmly bedded in, the Ashburton Trust is about to take a long, hard look at its future.

It plans to hold a strategy meeting in September where all options will be on the table for the way it will do business in its new trading environment, says board chairwoman Fay Watson.

“We’ll be doing some navel gazing and thinking about our purpose, the role we should be playing in the community around

sponsorship and donations,” she said.

While the trust was running a range of hospitality businesses, its role was clear, but as it sold those businesses and became a landlord it needed to define what its new role should be, Watson said.

“We need to have a think tank about how we shape our future.

We need to get a plan developed and then go out to the community with a plan.”

Anything and everything would be on the table and the board

would look at some fundamental issues such as whether as a trust it should have naming rights to events or make grants and donations.

The plan would also look at the trust’s investment portfolio and where this should grow in the future. Currently its money is tied up in Ashburton property but it might want to diversify in terms of location, Watson said.

“I hope our cash flows will be such we can build a capital fund where we can give money to the community.”

Everything from bicycles to buses will be taking to the streets of Ashburton on Sunday morning.

The SprayMarks Wheels Week Street Parade will see vehicles parade through the centre of town on East Street.

It is expected hundreds of wheels will be taking to the streets.

Wheels Week Plus committee president Tony Dawson said this year the organisers have received three times as many enquiries as previous years.

“The weather looks good and so we should have a perfect opportunity for people to show off

the time and effort they have put in to their vehicles,” he said.

“The event has been running from year one and just seems to be get bigger and bigger every year.”

Dawson said some of the more unique vehicles that had been entered in the parade included the front halves of two Austin 1800s that had been attached together and a motorised monocycle.

The parade starts at 10.30am and at the conclusion of the event, vehicles will meet on the corner of Seafield Road and Bridge Street for public viewing.

Chilly weekend for Mid Canterbury Roads around Methven were icy yesterday after town residents woke to frosty conditions, and more of the same is expected over the weekend.

In Ashburton the MetService reported a frost of 1.7 degrees overnight Thursday.

After a sunny day yesterday, evening rain and strong southwests were to turn to gale southwesterlies, with light snow to 300 metres.

Cold winds would continue today with a pattern of frosts over the weekend.

A ridge moving onto the country from Sunday would hopefully bring more settled weather early next week, the MetService said.

Tempers flare around council table

Accusations of negativity and destructive and disruptive attitudes were fired across the Ashburton District Council’s meeting table this week when councillors Stuart Wilson and Selwyn Price squared off over a water management project.

When Price attempted to dramatically reduce the amount of water made available for the district’s managed aquifer recharge (MAR) project which has both district and national significance, Wilson saw red.

“I cannot believe what a negative, destructive and backward looking council we’ve elected.

What kind of idiotic idea is it you have trying to stop a nationwide project which will benefit not only the Ashburton District but also the country. Tell me, where’s your logic,” he asked Price.

Wilson supported a recommendation that the MAR team should have continued access for five years of up to 500 litres per second of unused, consented stockwater from the Rangitata River. Price wanted the quantity cut to 125 litres, effectively scuppering the ability of the MAR trial to extend to new sites.

Members of what is becoming a voting block – Peter Reveley, Alasdair Urquhart and Mark Malcolm threw their weight behind Price and that fired up Neil Brown.

“These people need to get in and get the job done. This water is consented and it’s not being used, here is a perfect use for it,” he said.

The MAR group was made up of experts; councillors were not experts on water issues. Councillors had to trust them to get on with the job, Brown said.

“We’ve already gone backwards once this term (revisiting the civic centre and library project) and we’re going backwards again. I can’t understand the councillors who are trying to stymie this. It’s already been approved and it’s not depleting the Rangitata any further.

The Managed Aquifer Recharge project is the first of its kind in New Zealand. It began in June last year.

The project uses unused, consented stockwater from the Rangitata River and moves this down the Rangitata Diversion Race and Valetta Irrigation Scheme to a recharge site (a unused shingle pit) at a rate of up to 500 litres per second.

For the duration of the trial about 125 litres per second was used.

The scheme is a leader in New Zealand irrigation and is funded largely through the Ministry for Primary Industries. The Ashburton District Council’s only contribution is through allowing its unused stockwater consent to be utilised.

To date about $1.1 million has been

spent. The project is designed to recharge clean water to underlying aquifers to enhance and protect water resource quality and quantity. Several bores are measured regularly to assess its success.

The project has wrapped up a successful one year trial and the governance group asked council to approve the use of the unused stockwater until 2021.

Results from the trial show that levels in monitoring wells have risen and nitrate levels have dropped significantly. The group now plans to develop more recharge sites around the district.

The MAR governance board says the outcomes are ticking all the boxes for achieving healthy aquifers.

Gallery re-opens with ‘mesmerising’ exhibition

After 12 days of the Ashburton Art Gallery’s exhibition spaces being shut to the public, now it is time for the final reveal.

Christchurch dad and artist Steve Carr will today open Variations for Troubled Hands, a fourwork exhibition.

Transpiration, a six-channel time lapse projection of carnations soaking up coloured dyes, will fill the Colin Redmond Gallery, alongside American Night, a condensed-time film of a bird, on just one screen.

In the side gallery and hall wall there will be Studies for Cadence, a photographic sequence of hand gestures from Royal New Zealand Ballet prodigy Cadence. It will be the first time the work has been shown in New Zealand.

“I was interested in how highspeed photography captures something it’s impossible for the eye to capture,” Carr said.

Motor Relief will fill the (coincidentally named) Carr Family Gallery. It is a series of car wheels in motion on 12 monitors.

Using video art and photography, the Ilam School of Fine Arts senior lecturer has created what is expected to be a mesmerising and immersive experience.

“It’s capturing the everyday but doing it in a way it feels there is some sort of strangeness to it,” Carr said of Motor Relief.

And with Transpiration, this involved a form of optical illusion as the peripheral vision picked up a change in the carnations’ colours.

“It’s kind of beautiful but frustrating at the same time,” Carr said.

Gallery publicity officer Nicole Bourke said it had been an involved process installing the exhibition as it had a large technological component.

It would be the first time the

gallery displayed one exhibition across all its spaces, and the first time the gallery had closed those spaces for such a long time for installation.

The Variations for Troubled Hands exhibition will open with an artist talk at 2.30pm, and run until June 24.

Ashburton District councillors fear that the district will lose out when its rural fire assets are transferred to the new national fire authority Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ).

The council has drafted a transfer agreement that would see all of its fire appliances, its equipment and its buildings handed to FENZ and for licences to be established to allow FENZ to use council land.

The trial of Ashburton man Kooly Managki Te Tomo is set to get under way in the Timaru District Court on Monday. Te Tomo is accused of causing the 2014 death of Arran ‘AJ’ Gairns by manslaughter in 2014. Three other people have already been convicted and sentenced to terms of imprisonment in relation to Gairn’s death. Strict suppression orders prevented the publication of any evidence presented during the trial of two of those people earlier this year in the interests of offering Te Tomo a fair trial. Defence submissions, the judge’s sentencing remarks, and victim impact statements were also suppressed during their sentencing appearance. And why not charge commercial rates for this land, not peppercorn rental,” he said.

At Thursday’s council meeting he said the council had spent a lot of money over many years to get its rural fleet to a high standard, re-

placing one or two engines each year and ensuring firefighters were well trained.

“We want to be assured we can keep our fleet and sheds to the standard they are now and we want to be assured the level of service will be what it is now.”

Council chief executive Andrew Dalziel has been driving the transition of rural fire activities to FENZ for the council.

“We’re seen to be a leading light in Canterbury, we’re in a good situation and we’re trying to get an agreement we’re comfortable

with; the drive here is to get a higher level of service and if this puts out fires faster and cheaper, then it’s the right thing to do,” he said. If councillors wanted to make a profit from the land lease it could be done, but it would be complicated, Dalziel said.

The new rural fire authority will be officially in business on July 1.

Ashburton’s emergency management officer Don Geddes will take up the position of deputy principal rural fire officer for the organisation in Mid and South Canterbury.

It might not have happened as quickly as the Ashburton Trust hoped, but board chairwoman Fay Watson is confident the organisation is close to clinching a sale on its Tinwald Tavern complex. Watson said the trust was in discussions with “more than one party” on potential deals that would include the tavern, motel complex and bottle store.

$28.7m upgrade A $28.7 million upgrade of the Lyttelton Tunnel will take place over the next 18 months, improving safety and reducing the risk of a lengthy closure. The fire deluge system to be installed represents the largest work undertaken on the tunnel since it opened in 1964. The system will effectively manage a fire until fire services can reach the scene, Transport Minister Simon Bridges says.

■ MAYFIELD HINDS IRRIGATION SCHEME

Rescuers busy recovering fish More than 400 fish have been returned to the Rangitata River during a joint salvage operation between Central South Island Fish & Game and the Mayfield Hinds Irrigation Limited (MHIL).

Each year staff from Central South Island Fish & Game work with irrigators to conduct salvages from irrigation schemes to return as many fish as possible to the fishery.

The Mayfield Hinds irrigation scheme shuts down for annual maintenance and they work closely with Fish & Game to prevent fish losses when water level drops.

Mayfield Hinds Irrigation Limited is the largest privately owned scheme in New Zealand and has delivered water from the Rangitata Diversion Race to 33,000 hectares of land since the late 1940’s.

After the irrigation season ends staff gradually lower water in the races so that fish have time to naturally head to areas of deeper water.

This gradual lowering means that fish are not unnecessarily stressed and also

means that rather than having to check the whole water race system, the fish can be easily recovered from deep points in the races known as drops, communications advisor Richard Cosgrove said.

“Once the water has dropped to around thigh deep, the water is at a level at which it can be electrically fished or drag netted to ensure as many fish as possible are recovered.”

The electric fishing machine used by Fish & game staff enables fish to be recovered quickly and humanely, he said.

All fish recovered are quickly returned to the Rangitata River and this includes native fish species which this year included a longfin eel that was free to continue its migration to the sea for spawning.

This year three adult salmon were recovered and about 200 juvenile salmon and about 200 brown and rainbow trout were also salvaged along with the longfin eel, Cosgrove said.

Recovery numbers were on a par with last year, he said.

Mayfield School gets ERO tick

Mayfield School principal Richard Kidd is delighted after the recent ERO review of the school found there was no longer need for two-year reviews, and made the step out to a three-yearly cycle.

The report highlighted the improvement of systems to gather achievement information, along with school leaders providing more comprehensive reports on student achievement to the board.

“Since the last ERO evaluation in 2015, the school has made good progress in addressing the areas identified for development.”

Kidd said he joined the school in 2014 after it had been placed on the two-year review cycle in 2013.

“We had pretty much a new board and worked through everything that we needed to improve,” he said. “We have a really good board, staff, and a supportive community and it has been three years of working hard to get us back to where we should be.”

When asked what he believed has helped to improve the position of the school, Kidd said a good working partnership with the board, a good group of staff and help from external advisors on particular areas.

“It has been quite stressful, but it is rewarding for the work we have done and it is great news for the school, as there maybe hasn’t been the best perception in the past, so this should help with turning it around,” he said.

Mayfield School principal Richard Kidd was delighted with the school’s latest ERO report, as the school was moved from a two to a three-yearly review cycle.

The truth ab Five hundred jobs have gone at Silver Fern Farms’ Fairton shed in the past 18 months, with the death knell dealt to all but a handful of the remaining workforce this week. While declining sheep numbers have no doubt influenced the company’s decision to shut shop at Fairton, there are other opinions. Mid Canterbury shareholder Blair Gallagher campaigned against the Silver Fern Farms-Shanghai Maling merger on a political level, and an anonymous group who operate under the moniker of Fairton Freezing Workers consider there are other motives behind the proposed closure of the Fairton plant. Guardian reporter Michelle Nelson investigates.

‘Flagged for closure a year ago’ A

Mid Canterbury farmer who fronted a campaign opposed to Silver Fern Farms selling a controlling stake to a Chinese company says the company’s Fairton plant was flagged for closure more than a year ago.

However, the information was withheld from shareholders and workers.

Last year Blair Gallagher and Rakaia Gorge farmer John Shrimpton, Silver Fern’s largest shareholder, led a ginger group of about 80 like-minded shareholders to challenge the Shanghai Maling merger.

Closure of the Fairton plant was disclosed in information provided to Shanghai Maling ahead of the rubber stamping of the $261 million deal, Gallagher said.

The Waitane plant was also earmarked for closure as part of the company’s rationalisation process.

At the time Silver Fern’s chief executive Dean Hamilton refuted the claims, however Gallagher and Shrimpton had the 580-page document provided to Shanghai Maling translated.

Other than the announced decision to relocate venison processing from Islington to Pareora, there were no plans for further closures planned for next year, Mr Hamilton said in May last year.

He maintained the same position following Wednesday’s meeting in Ashburton, where workers learned of the company’s decision to shut down all but the pelt house operation at the Fairton plant, citing declining stock numbers as the reason.

Hamilton said the information discussed with the Chinese shareholders regarding impending closures was hypothetical, so there was no need to share it with New Zealand shareholders.

Blair Gallagher plants (Fairton and Waitane) was touted to produce a cash flow of $NZ23 million and lead to growth and ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) of $12.4 million in 2018, according to the document.

“We always knew Fairton was over capacity in terms of processing – 50 per cent over capacity in recent years,” Gallagher said. “We also knew there would be rationalisation.”

He remains critical of the handling of the situation in which Silver Fern Farms’ shareholders were kept in the dark while Shanghai Maling was told of the eminent closures of the Fairton and Waitane meatworks last year.

“Silver Fern’s own shareholders and the workers had not been given that information,” Gallagher said.

“The reason for this has still not been fully explained.

“Justin Courtney (SFF communications head) has said the matter will be explained fully within the next couple of days.”

While the Shanghai Maling deal was touted as the way to redeem Silver Fern Farms’ poor performance, enabling Silver Fern to repay its debt, the promised benefits have yet to be seen.

“Since the Shanghai Maling deal went ahead, Silver Fern is the worst performing non-listed company (according to DeLoitte’s South Island Index),” Gallagher said.

The index report for the quarter ending March 31 showed Silver Fern experienced the largest fall in market capitalisation of companies, declining 41.5 per cent to $37.1m.

The country’s largest meat processor posted a $30.6 million loss as earnings collapsed in what was described by chairman Rob Hewett as a “very challenging year across the industry”.

The loss includes a $22.4 million noncash accounting write-down related to the Shanghai Maling investment. A year earlier it had posted a net profit of $24.9 million.

Gallagher said a discrepancy also existed in an unaccounted for $30 million which was to have been saved in interest payments after the debt was repaid.

“There is not enough confidence to hold the share prices – it has dropped to around 50 cents,” he said.

Silver Fern Farms completed the deal with Shanghai Maling on the basis of a stock price of $2.84.

When the deal was announced the price briefly blipped above the dollar mark before crashing back to 51c.

ilver Fern Farms’ decision to shut shop at Fairton has been attributed to declining sheep numbers.

A decade ago the Fairton plant was consistently processing more than a million lambs a season; that number halved in the 2015-16 season and dropped back to 325,000 this season, which provided only six months’ work in the best case scenario for meat processors.

As a result the average pay for Fairton workers this season was a miserly $20K. It’s not only the Mid Canterbury flock that has nosed-dived in numbers.

Drought, facial eczema and a high number of land-use conversions have taken a heavy toll.

In Mid Canterbury dairy and arable farms have largely replaced the traditional mixed cropping units of the past, driven by improved irrigation technology.

Although Silver Fern Farms chief executive Dean Hamilton believes the pace of land-use change has slowed considerably and sheep numbers will consolidate, there is no hope for the Fairton plant, which is only set up to process sheep and bobby calves.

The company has already invested $7 million in upgrading its mixed-species plant at Pareora, and this week announced it is set to spend another million dollars expanding the venison and cold storage facilities.

According to Beef+Lamb New Zealand(B+LNZ), North Island sheep numbers decreased 6.4 per cent (934,000 head) to 13.6 million heading into the 2016-17 season.

Within this, breeding ewe numbers at 8.8 million were down 5.1 per cent and at 4.4 million total hoggets numbers were down 11 per cent.

Breeding ewe number changes were due to the impact of facial eczema and relatively strong returns from beef.

Hogget numbers decreased on the previous year due to a smaller breeding ewe flock, which led to fewer lambs born for spring 2015.

South Island sheep numbers provisionally decreased 4.2 per cent to 14.0 million.

The largest decline occurred in Marlborough-Canterbury (-5.4 per cent) due to drought conditions in Marlborough and North Canterbury, which resulted in tight feed supplies leading into the 2016 winter.

The total number of lambs tailed in the spring of 2016 was provisionally down 5.4 per cent (1.3 million head) on the previous spring to 23.2 million head. The 2016 lamb crop was influenced by a decrease in the number of breeding ewes.

In December the B+LNZ Economic Service estimated the total number of lambs processed for the 2016-17 season would be down 4.43 million head, or 11 per cent, on the previous year.

Mutton slaughter was estimated to decrease by 5.6 per cent to 3.6 million, on the back of three successive years of high off-take, which resulted from drought conditions and profitable returns for beef, B+LNZ’s Lamb Crop 2016 survey found.

out Fairton Workers’ words of wisdom B

efore you judge Silver Fern Farms or the declining stock numbers or the workforce, take a minute to consider these facts, historical events and the intergenerational dedication of the district’s men and women for almost 120 years.

Going back some years when Charlotte Stephens took over from Joe Butchard as the new manager of the Fairton plant, she inherited a workforce that had pride and efficiency in their mind-set.

It came from having long seasons of work, a management structure which strived to be continuously financially prudent, and a healthy working relationship with union secretary Darcy Lysaght which enabled an environment of mutual respect and a willingness to overcome issues.

Fairton was close to the top of the pecking order within the SFF group in many of the key performance indicators (KPIs).

The plant and machinery was maintained to under budget to an exceptional standard by a highly skilled team.

Fairton was smashing it out there and everyone was on board for the ride with a combined vision of productivity and quality.

Back then, the stable experienced, workforce was a huge asset in an industry where employee churn/turnover was the norm.

SFF wanted to grab a huge market share of the ever increasing bobby calf market and came to the union with a proposal for the bobby calf season only.

Farmers were offered a seven-day pick up and seven-day kills, but without the current overtime payments that were within the employment contract.

So it was to do away with some allowances and double time and work a six-day roster with payments in the weekends capped at time and a half. Some allowances were also to be dropped and the start times would be variable.

The union resolved that all stock would be killed each day regardless of numbers.

The union got agreement from the workers and it went ahead.

Some workers that season worked six weeks straight and some were doing 14 days on one day off, in an industry where physicality is the norm.

Then next year SFF came again with another proposal – they wanted a later start time of up to 10am and to drop allowances for travel and meal monies and a 2 per cent decrease in holiday pay that was in the agreement.

The union got agreement from the workforce and the calf season went ahead.

The next year SFF management came back with a proposal to start at midday and finish somewhere around 9pm or later, and to drop all remaining allowances.

The union asked for all possible changes management had on the plate; the latest start times and any other compromises required of workers to make, to avoid coming each year with changes that drove frustration and angst in the workforce. The response was the midday start would be the last request.

Again the union sought and got agreement from the workers and it went ahead.

Early in the following year and new brat on the block for SFF Jason Graham reared

his head and reputation to try and rewrite all agreements on the calf kill contract and do away with up to 23 different clauses – seniority, sick pay and working hours could be interrupted each day with up to a three-hour wait for a stock truck to arrive with no pay, decreased numbers working on the chain and speed increased above the industry practice.

This equated to longer working days for less pay in all departments, different start times each day and all overtime rates cut.

So Graham’s wish list went on.

Not only were the various departmental union delegates disgusted at the proposal but the manager was a reluctant player. We later found out she had little faith in ever being able to get agreement when the existing workers had done everything asked of them. Stephens resigned with a word of warning; the SFF culture had changed.

We knew the game was changing, but why?

Like clockwork, management returned with yet another proposal the following season, this time proposing a 2pm start time and no overtime in the weekends meaning a flat pay rate for all.

The threat was agree or we take the bobby kill to Pareora. Fairton, Pareora and Finegand in Balclutha all voted together as we are all in the same collective. The thinking was to present the total vote to SFF so they couldn’t play favourites or one plant against another. Over 98 per cent against the proposal.

time was offered until day six and the 2pm start time remained on the table. We were told, if we didn’t agree and even if Pareora didn’t agree to the new terms, the calves would still go to Pareora.

That confirmed our suspicions were correct. SFF was trying to screw the Fairton workers to get concessions in their employment agreement, then play one plant

went to Pareora. Bugger!

The next season had changed Fairton started later and finished earlier, a penalty for not agreeing and SFF’s way of trying to force the workers financially into agreement for future proposals.

Someone had made the decision to move production to Pareora not just for the calf but also the lamb, and not just them as now Finegand was having a longer season at Fairton’s expense. In that year Fairton lost 35 weeks of work over two chains.

Pareora and Finegand gained 35 weeks.

The game had changed and a new behind the scenes game was being played, and we knew then that it was all over bar the fighting.

We believe that SFF had already made the decision to close Fairton and to reduce its redundancy liability; if the short seasons would force many workers to look for other employment.

The following year (2015-16), no over-

off against another. And when they had finished, close Fairton.

But what they didn’t count on was the guts and pride in the Fairton workforce. We weren’t going to agree to something so you could screw the other plants even though it would mean a longer season. We gave them the bird loud and clear and stood proud. We held the line, despite the views of others in the community.

We knew we were right as far back as four years ago; Fairton was doomed.

The maintenance team had their budgets cut to the wire and any work costed at over $500 required approval from SFF head office in Dunedin.

That year unbelievably SFF went back to Pareora with a revised offer; leave overtime as it is, a holiday increase of 2 per cent as per the old agreement and a 2pm start time.

This completely opposed the deal originally put to the Fairton workers. In short it

was off the table for Fairton.

Pareora agreed and processed the calf kill.

In that same environment the merger with Shanghai Maling entered the picture.

Winston Peters told us all that SFF was proposing to close Fairton and Waitane to increase profit margins. SFF denied it. Did they blatantly mislead or lie, some would say so, we couldn’t possibly agree. They still went ahead after the deal was planned and shed over 350 jobs at Mossburn, Frasertown in Wairoa, Islington deer plan, Canterbury Cold stores and the second chain at Fairton.

And when the axe fell this week 360 jobs went down the gurgler – that’s 500 for Fairton of the 770 jobs SFF/ Shanghai Mailing has shed in the past year.

We have yet to see how the country or its people have benefited from that merger. It certainly hasn’t started well has it?

What has the Dean Hamilton-led SFF done in its tenure? What they are good at is closing plants when others in the industry are taking the market share from under the company’s nose.

Under his tenure SFF South Island has leaked market share while the likes of Alliance, ANZCO and Talleys are ripping it up with both profit and volume.

When is the Hamilton-led SFF/Shanghai Mailing going to perform? Maybe when it realises it’s massively top heavy with a new middle management structure that costs over $1.9 million a year to run, when a couple of years ago it didn’t exist!! Maybe it’s a culture of extravagance that goes to Hamilton’s salary of over $1.6 million a year – that’s more than the wage bill at one of the plants!

So now it will have a two-plant structure in the South Island being driven by a glass corporate office staffed by over 130 people.

When the culture at SFF changed so did its soul.

Good bye Fairton, it was nice knowing you.

Player retention key to performance

The chance to retain a good majority of their squad from last season is starting to show for the Ashburton College A netball side.

The group of girls are enduring a busy schedule in the early stages of the season as they manage matches in the new-look InterCentre competition, but also have one eye on the SuperNet competition on a Wednesday.

But the past few weeks have

been more than successful with an unbeaten run through the qualifying stage of the SuperNet competition followed up by their first win over a non-Ashburton based side in the Inter-Centre competition last Friday night.

That win against, Greenpark, came just over 24 hours after they opened their SuperNet account with a narrow victory over St Andrews in which they were successful 39-37.

“It’s been a big couple of days

for them,” coach, Ange Mitchell said.

“But they are growing as a team each week and really starting to come together which is great.”

Mitchell was certain that the fact they have been able to roll over most of the squad from last season has been of huge benefit to them, but also the chance to play some really seasoned and experienced players in the Thursday night competition is paying dividends.

“Stepping up on a Thursday night to play 15 minute quarters as opposed to the eight minute quarters in SuperNet is also proving helpful for the conditioning side of things.”

After chasing St Andrew’s for the majority of the match on Wednesday, Ashburton College found another gear in the final quarter to secure the victory to open their account.

That success followed on from four victories from four matches

in the qualifying stage of the competition in which they recorded good wins against big rivals Rangiora High School, Rangi Ruru Girls’, Cashmere and Lincoln.

“The goal was to go through that stage unbeaten, and we managed to achieve that.

“And it was great to get that first win on the board during the week, but we know it’s only going to get harder so we will have to keep improving.”

Bennett right on the pace in Tour of California Andrew Talansky’s consolation prize was merely a signature victory on arguably the most famous climb in North America, the gruelling ascent of Mount Baldy during the Tour of California.

The American rider sprinted clear of overall leader Rafal Majka as the duo approached the top yesterday, throwing his arms in the air in exhausted celebration.

The victory came one day be-

fore the potentially decisive time trial and gave Talansky a shot of much-appreciated confidence.

“I knew I felt good. I was expecting more intense attacks at the bottom,” said Talansky.

“They’re strong riders and when I realised I didn’t have a chance to shake them I thought, ‘Go for the stage win.’”

Majka’s second-place finish allowed him to put two more sec-

onds and a time bonus into thirdplace finisher New Zealander George Bennett, who now sits six seconds back in second overall.

Ian Boswell is 25 seconds back in third place.

Who will replace Smith?

Steve Hansen says he doesn’t intend to “shoulder tap” a replacement for Wayne Smith.

Smith’s vacating of his assistant coaching role after this year’s Lions tour and Rugby Championship yesterday morning has raised immediate speculation about who will replace him.

Hansen addressed the issue during a press conference at Auckland Airport to announce the end of 60-year-old Smith’s remarkable two decade involvement with the All Blacks.

“We won’t shoulder tap anybody – that’s not our style,” Hansen told reporters.

“We will advertise the job and then do interviews and whoever we appoint will spend some time with us in the Rugby Championship looking over Smith’s shoulder.

Hansen was asked if he will use Smith’s departure to modify the role.

“It will probably be more simplified than what Wayne is doing now,” he said.

“While we call him a defence coach, he has had a big responsibility through the whole team.

“Initially though I want somebody who will look after defence.”

Hansen said he tried hard to convince Smith to remain.

“Today isn’t a surprise.

“I’ve been twisting his arm for the past six years now.

“I knew eventually I was going to lose that competition.

“The hole will be big, though.

“The systems he has put in place will lessen that hole.

“But the man will be missed.”

But Smith said he was confident he would not be missed.

“There’s another side to this equation ... there are some very good young coaches coming through Super Rugby,” he said.

“There’s going to be a bit of a win there because you have somebody else stepping into a

England captain Dylan Hartley could be edging towards a British and Irish Lions call-up following an injury scare to Wales hooker Ken Owens. Owens will miss the Scarlets’ Guinness PRO12 play-off clash against Leinster in Dublin tonight because of an ankle injury.

Owens was one of three hookers named in the 41-man Lions squad for New Zealand alongside Ireland skipper Rory Best and England’s Jamie George.

Smith recently celebrated his 60th birthday and said the time was right to step down from fulltime coaching.

“I’ve had an incredible time and shared in some fantastic experiences.

“It’s unbelievable to think that I’ve been involved in playing and coaching with the All Blacks for 20 years, a third of my life.

“I’ve had an incredible time and shared in some fantastic experiences. But it’s time to hang up my coach’s whistle for a while, take a bit of a hiatus, freshen up and spend some more time with my wife Trish and our family.”

Smith said there were a number of people he needed to acknowledge.

“First and foremost, I want to thank my family for allowing me the opportunity to do what I have done for so many years.

“I’ve never taken their support for granted and it’s been huge for me.

“I want to thank Steve Tew, Steve Hansen and Gilbert Enoka who have been constants in my career since our Canterbury days.

They’ve provided longstanding support and friendship for many

years which I’m very thankful for.

I’d also like to acknowledge Sir Graham Henry who gave me the opportunity to return to the All Blacks coaching set up in 2004. I really appreciated that, as well as the guidance he gave me.

“I’m at the point after 20 years in black, whilst I’ve got the hunger today, I don’t know if I can go on too much longer.

“I’m ready to refresh, take a sabbatical, recondition ... I might rotate back in to rugby at some point.

“It’s not an easy decision to make when you love it.

Hastings sounds warning for Lions tourists Former British & Irish Lions captain Gavin Hastings has warned his modern-day counterparts of the potential pitfalls of touring New Zealand, reflecting on a 1993 campaign that ended in a 2-1 test series defeat.

“In New Zealand, you had to have the right mentality,” the Scottish fullback told bbc.com.

“I had it and lots of others had it, but not everybody had it.

“Speak to a guy like Damian Cronin, and he probably has a touch of regret that he didn’t perform to the best of his ability and maybe took it as a bit of a jolly.

“It’s a tough place to go. You’re at Rugby Park in Invercargill and the Southland boys are kicking lumps out of you, but you’ve got to face up to it.

“I remember a game against North Harbour and those guys are some tough hombres, and they’re after you and you have to

meet them face to face.”

Hastings felt his side, coached by fellow Scot Ian McGeechan, was desperately unlucky not to win the opening test in Christchurch.

In the opening minutes, All Blacks centre Frank Bunce was awarded a try, even though he didn’t appear to force the ball.

With the Lions ahead 18-17 and seconds left on the clock, Australia referee Brian Kinsey then blew a penalty at the breakdown and first-five Grant Fox converted from long-range for the win.

The tourists went on to take the second test 20-7, but after leading 10-0 in the series decider, they were starved of possession and eventually fell 30-13 at Eden Park.

“Ah, it was a series we should have won,” reflected Hastings, who played 61 games for his country and another six for the

Gavin Hastings Lions on his only tour.

“We were very unlucky in the first test – there’s a lot of regret there.

“The margins between victory and defeat are so small.

“Those incidents in the first test – people don’t remember them.”

But that Lions side really fell off the rails with a midweek team

that lost to both Hawke’s Bay and Waikato in the final weeks of the 13-match tour.

By the time they arrived in Hamilton for the penultimate fixture, many of the dirt-trackers had simply given up the ghost.

Waikato’s hooker that day was the current Lions coach Warren Gatland, who warmed the All Blacks reserve bench behind legendary captain Sean Fitzpatrick for four years, without earning a test cap.

“Warren was a guy who looked 20 years older than anyone else,” remembers Hastings.

“If there’s one New Zealander who can harness the frustration of missing out on an All Blacks test jersey, one New Zealand who will really, really want the Lions to win, it will be Warren Gatland.

“I said it to him and he had a smile on his face.”

Brumbies reshuffle backs Exciting Brumbies fullback Tom Banks will get another chance to prove himself in the No. 15 jersey, with Aidan Toua shifting to the wing for the club’s crucial Super Rugby clash with the Kings. Coach Stephen Larkham left James Dargaville out of the squad which is in Port Elizabeth ahead of the match, allowing Banks to play his fifth game of the season. The Brumbies will be looking for the 22-year-old to inject some spark into a team which hasn’t scored a try in 210 minutes while slumping to four-straight losses for the first time since 2011.

Powerful bench The Highlanders will be able to call on a couple of very decent bench players for the game against the Western Force in Perth tonight. All Black halfback Aaron Smith gets a chance to take a breather and is named on the bench for the first time this season. Next to him will be back-up All Blacks first fiveeighth Lima Sopoaga. He has been sidelined with a hamstring injury for the past two months and is expected will make his return from the bench. The pair have forged a wonderful combination for the Highlanders. It will be interesting to see what impact Sopoaga can make in his first game back since he left the field against the Blues on March 11.

A look ahead to the sporting weekend, with a glance back over the shoulder at the week that was.

On the couch Ashburton is starting to become a mecca for young swimming talents and this weekend we have almost 30 rising stars in action at the EA Networks Centre for an annual meet on both Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Get along and cheer on some of our locals as they put the Mid Canterbury name out there. Racing begins today at 3pm and then again tomorrow morning from 9am.

We’re not going to stray too far from the obvious here, but here’s one from the sport of ten pin bowling. Did you know that the most common injury in ten pin bowling is, wait for it ... A sore thumb! Who would have thought. I guess the other logical option is a sore toe, because if you drop a bowling ball on one of them you sure do know about it.

after a strong start to 2017 in which we feel we performed reasonably well with a 90 per cent strike rate. A horse who isn’t quite sure if he’s a pacer or a trotter, or even potentially a galloper, but there’s a motor there and we think tomorrow is the day.

The Carrington effect New Zealand canoeing bosses would have had a first look at the depth of women’s paddling when two K4 crews line up in a straight final at the world cup regatta in Portugal early this morning.

With women outstripping men in terms of the development in the sport in this country, eight paddlers are contesting world cups this weekend and next, in Szeged, Hungary, under the eye of national women’s coach Rene Olsen.

The four-seater had a fine 2016, culminating in finishing fifth in the Olympic final in Rio. Jaimee Lovett has since retired, but the other three remain, with Lisa Carrington, three-time Olympic single seat medal winner, stepping in to good effect.

“Lisa is a great athlete and quality for any kind of team,” former Danish Olympic paddler Olsen said from Portugal.

“She’s working really hard and she’s been good at putting her power into the boat.”

The women have been split into a senior and an up-and-coming four.

There are solid expectations from the top four, comprising, in seating order, Kayla Imrie, Carrington, Aimee Fisher and Caitlin Ryan. But Olsen is also liking what he’s seeing from the junior four, of Briar McLeely, Kim Thompson, Rebecca Cole and Britney Ford.

He singled out McLeely for special mention.

“She’s a really strong paddler. She was very close to selection for the big boat,” Olsen said.

“She’s definitely an athlete to watch

over the next couple of years and could be knocking on the door of the big boat really fast.”

The thinking at this stage is those fours will stay intact this season.

The younger group are also in line for the world under 23 and junior (under 18) championships in Romania in late July.

So what is it about the young women paddlers right now? Where the men are struggling for quality performers, there seems an abundance in the women’s ranks.

“A couple of things.

“First after London there was a good Lisa Carrington effect (after her K1 200m gold) on how many people were coming into the sport.

“And there was really good commitment from those four to six other girls in the programme.

“Lisa was very good and (it) seemed impossible to come up and beat her.

“To see crew boats going so well made it easier for Briar, Rebecca, Kim and Britney to see a road forward.”

Team New Zealand trimmer Blair Tuke admits there has been a degree of foxing from his team in their build-up to the America’s Cup. The Kiwi syndicate remained stuck on land in Bermuda yesterday as the shore team continue the marathon repair job on the punctured hull, which was sustained during a collision with British team Ben Ainslie Racing on Wednesday.

But with practice racing called off once again due to light winds on the Great Sound, the setback has not cost Team NZ any further practice racing experience.

The team were eager to grab every opportunity test themselves under proper match racing conditions this week as the countdown to the opening race of the America’s Cup qualifiers ticks over to eight days.

Likewise, their rivals were no doubt just as eager to get a better look at the Kiwi boat, which only arrived in Bermuda a month ago.

Tuke, who also provides some of the pedal power aboard the Kiwi boat, said there has been an element of sandbagging in Team NZ’s build-up, as they try to keep some innovations and sailing techniques under wraps.

“It’s an interesting one.

“You don’t want to let the opposition see everything you can do, you want to keep a bit up your sleeve, but at the same time if you want to execute something well, you have to practice it.

“You can’t expect to put a new piece of equipment on, or suddenly do something differently on the first day of racing and expect eveything to be 100 per cent.

“It’s a fine line,” Tuke said. “That’s something we’re evaluating the whole time and will continue to as different things come on line during the challenger series.”

Despite this week’s setbacks, in which the team blew out their rudder on day one of practice racing before Wednesday’s run-in with Ainslie, Tuke said it is important Team NZ continue to push their boat hard and keep developing.

“We have to get faster, we know that – we’ve said that from the start.

“The guys we have to beat to get to Oracle are good – Softbank is going really fast, Artemis is fast, so to beat those guys we need to be at the top of our game.”

In brief Depression diagnosis Netball star Caitlin Thwaites has opened up about her battle with depression describing her diagnosis as a “huge relief”. The 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist said she was initially unaware she was suffering from depression and anxiety, which would often leave her hyperventilating and uncontrollably shaking. She hit her lowest point at age 21 but said netball was the one thing that would get her out of bed. “The reason behind that was because it was the only place where I felt like I was going to be missed,” she said.

GI ‘in good spirits’ South Sydney coach Michael Maguire says Greg Inglis is in good spirits as he wages his battle with depression. Inglis, who is out for the rest of the NRL season with a knee injury, last week checked himself into a rehabilitation facility to deal with mental health issues.

Maguire says he has spoken to the Queensland and Australian ace and he seems to be in a good frame of mind.

College girls take a thriller Ashburton College is the second team to notch up a win over a Canterbury rival in the InterCentre premier netball competition played on Thursday night.

Coming off the back of a win in their first week of the SuperNet competition, the young team pulled together well to beat Greenpark 47-44.

College started out strong, leading by three at the end of the first quarter, but Greenpark fought back to lead at half time 22-19.

It was the wake-up call the College girls needed, as they rallied to take the next quarter and continued the momentum into the last.

Coach Ange Mitchell said it was awesome to have a win over such an experienced team.

“They played as a team and kept their composure, which was

really pleasing. We changed a few things after the second quarter and that really made an impact,” she said.

The win over St Andrew’s on Wednesday night by two goals helped with their confidence going into the game and a strong performance by Meg Witterick at WA helped to deliver good ball between the defence and attack.

It wasn’t such a great night out for the only other Mid Canterbury team to score a win over their Canterbury counterparts – Celtic.

After some strong games in recent weeks, they were no match for a tall and slick Technical team, which features several Ashburton faces including coach Andrea Cousins.

Despite some solid defensive work by Gina Woodhouse and Julia McLeod, poor decisions

cost them in the end, coach Ange Leadley said, and they eventually went down 52-31.

Southern also had a big loss against Saints with a final score of 61-30.

United A notched up their first win of the round in the local derby against Methven.

Methven led by one at the end of the first quarter, but a strong second stanza from United saw them lead 23-15 at half time.

Despite a better third from Methven, United took out the game convincingly in the end 4634.

Hampstead was the only team to play an away game this week, squaring off against Lincoln University in Christchurch.

Despite a strong showing last week against Halswell, the score line was bigger this week, losing 55-34.

All Premier 1 teams have one final game before the end of round one, with five of the six teams in action at the EA Networks Centre and Celtic travelling for the final week.

In the final game of round one for Premier 2, Ashburton College sealed the fate of Allenton, who have been relegated to Senior A, by beating them 27-19, while Celtic B beat club rivals Celtic C 33-28.

Rakaia finished the round unbeaten, coming out on top of Hampstead B 32-27.

Southern B will take Allenton’s place in Premier 2, after an unbeaten run in Senior A. Promotion/relegation is automatic at the end of the first round, while after the second round teams play off in a match to determine final grades before the third and final round.

Blair an all-time favourite of Bennett’s

By Laine CLark Dismissed by Brisbane great Gorden Tallis as “one of the dirtiest players” in the NRL last year, Adam Blair has earned a much more desirable tag from Wayne Bennett ahead of his 250th NRL game.

Some of the game’s biggest names may have played under Bennett during his 40 year coaching career but the Brisbane master mentor reckoned Blair was one of his “favourite all-time players”.

Not usually one to give out individual compliments, Bennett heaped praise on the Kiwi international ahead of his milestone game against former club Wests Tigers at Suncorp last night.

“He’s one of my favourite alltime players,” Bennett said of the 30-year-old Broncos prop.

“It’s a fair statement but it’s the way he carries himself, the way he turns up every day, the way he plays, the way he interacts with the group.

“I just love what he brings.”

It was in stark contrast to former Brisbane captain Tallis’ scathing assessment of Blair barely 12 months ago after the Kiwi prop copped criticism for giving Brisbane team-mate Sam Thaiday a chicken wing tackle in the 2016 trans-Tasman test.

Tallis not only slammed Blair as dirty but claimed he was “disappointed” the mobile prop was allowed to wear the Broncos jersey.

But Bennett reckoned he was still counting his lucky stars that Blair opted to leave Wests Tigers

for Brisbane in 2015.

“I couldn’t believe we were going to be so fortunate,” Bennett said.

“I was part of the 2008 New Zealand side and I realised just how good he was – he brings a lot of things with him.

“We were pretty lucky to grab him. He has got better each year here.”

Tallis may feel differently but Bennett said Blair had not stopped being a positive influence on team-mates.

Cronulla overcame a 14-point half-time deficit with three unanswered tries to get out of jail against North Queensland on Thursday night. The Sharks were near-faultless in the second half of the 18-14 win, as they took the lead with 14 minutes to play when Sosaia Feki scampered down the left touchline. Simpkins out for season Gold Coast’s worst fears have been confirmed with Ryan Simpkins ruled out for the rest of the NRL season and Dan Sarginson in serious doubt. Forward Simpkins and utility back Sarginson were both injured in last week’s upset win over Melbourne. Simpkins has a ruptured ACL while Sarginson is likely to require surgery on his dislocated shoulder which will rub him out of his debut season. - AAP

80 minutes from Origin Jarryd Hayne is 80 minutes away from returning to the State of Origin stage he was dominating when a flirtation with American football so rudely interrupted.

After overcoming a knee issue this week, it seems Hayne only needs to get through tonight’s match against Manly to secure NSW selection for the 2017 series opener on May 31. The 29-year-old Hayne has impressed despite a move from fullback to centre – so much so that he will likely fill that role for Laurie Daley’s Blues after his two-series absence.

Tackling northern rivals Ashburton will have strong representation in the South Island and Southern Zone Academy and Masters teams when they clash with their northern rivals next month.

The annual fixture, which is held during the middle of the National Championships which are this year in Taupo from June 1017, sees some of the rising stars and proven performers on the bowling mats from around the country come together to battle it out over two rounds for supremacy.

The Ashburton District will be out in force during the test match with six players stepping out in the match.

Rowena MacKenzie will fill the role of the only female in the Academy side and will skip the women’s four.

In the men’s side, Mat Bassett, a former New Zealand junior singles winners will play the singles and come up against another former junior singles winner in Richard Caddy who hails from the Waikato.

Ken MacKenzie, who was the Player of the Tournament at last year’s South Island championships, will skip the men’s pairs.

Former Mid Canterbury player, Jeremy Markham will play in the lead position in the men’s fours.

In the Masters’ sides, Jenny Nordqvist will play lead in the women’s triples, while her husband Martin will play the two position in the men’s triples.

Graeme Chapman is the final Ashburton representative, and he will skip the four teams who take on a strong Northern Zone side in the best of two matches.

Reid absent from All Whites’ line-up – again don club for the last six weeks, and was experiencing significant pain when running or kicking a ball.

With time off, he may have been able to get through at least two games in Russia, likely to be a career highlight, then have the required surgery in late June after the tournament.

The silver lining is that Reid should be available for November’s

World Cup inter-confederation playoffs against the fifth-placed South American team, should the All Whites progress through the Oceania finals in August.

Like Ryan Nelsen used to, Reid makes other players around him significantly better and also brings so much off the field, especially for the younger members of Anthony Hudson’s squad.

■ OPINION

International selectors playing to the whistle W ith rugby (and all sports) teams heading hither and yon all over the shop at the moment, the question of who can populate those teams again rears its head.

Especially now that the Lions are about to hit our shores, with two of their ranks actually returning to the land of their birth.

Jared Payne is a superb case in point.

He was in the Waikato squad a few years ago, but the coach (a fella named Gatland) deemed him not good enough for that side and he moved to Northland.

Payne thrived up there; every opponent was well aware that they faced a strong-running, hard-tackling big man as competitive as anyone, good enough for the Crusaders to come calling.

But Payne saw his path to a black jersey blocked by a muddle of mid-fielders, gazed into his crystal ball and decided his rugby future was best served

overseas, picking up some nice dosh while still playing at a reasonably high level for a couple of years.

Turns out he enjoyed the lifestyle in his chosen destination (Ireland) so much he decided to stay, and make his home there with his Ulster-born partner and their first child is now nine months old.

Along with everything else in his life, his rugby improved.

So much so that Irish coach (yet another Kiwi) Joe Schmidt noticed he’d been around for quite a while, did his sums and said ‘Hey, come play for us’.

Good call; Payne has been a key player in the green jersey, good enough that the very same Gatland who didn’t need him for a provincial side rang him up and invited him to play for one of the world’s premier international teams, and in his ‘home’ country.

Holden’s Nick Percat’s flying lap has catapulted him to fastest Supercars practice time in improving conditions at Winton yesterday. It boosts Brad Jones Racing’s hopes of more success on their home track after Tim Slade’s maiden victory last year. While the first session was conducted in treacherous conditions, heavy rain eased and sunshine began to dry the track.

Greater Western Sydney’s injury crisis has worsened, with Devon Smith set to miss up to 12 weeks with a knee injury. Small forward Smith tore his right meniscus at training on Friday and will undergo surgery next week.

been living in Ireland for well over the required three-year period, so under the rules laid down by the ultimate rugby powers, that’s the way it is.

He didn’t go on his overseas jaunt with that in mind; any player who does that is taking a monumental gamble on their rugby and indeed their life, it just turned out that way.

Eddie Jones calls it straight – “I don’t make the rules, if they’re eligible and good enough I’ll pick them.”

There’s plenty of opposition to having Payne, along with Ben Te-o and South African CJ Stander, in the Lions, but you can

only play to the whistle, and that’s what they’re all doing.

The rules are about to change, making it a five-year residency thing, but for now it is what it is.

It’s somewhat ironic about all the strident calls coming from the northern hemisphere over the past couple of decades about the All Blacks doing their recruitment in the islands, when their own team is following the letter of the law exactly and stacking their squad with a few foreign-born players. Waisake Naholo and Malakai Fekitoa are two ABs that are island-born, but there’s not many others, and even those two are hardly guaranteed starters against the Lions.

And anyway, if poaching players, especially from the islands, really was the way to turn your team into world-beaters, surely the Warriors would have about six NRL championship titles on their wall by now.

Last time I looked, they hadn’t.

Wanderers sign teen Western Sydney Wanderers have signed teen striker Abraham Majok for the next two A-League seasons.

The 18-year-old, who was born in a refugee camp in Kenya to South Sudanese parents, picked up the sport at the age of seven, only two years after moving to Australia with his mother, grandmother and nine siblings. Ngati Whatua wants to buy the $1.1 billion Ports of Auckland.

Ngati Whatua wants to buy the $1.1 billion Ports of Auckland – and is talking of joining with other iwi and a financial giant to mount an ambitious approach to Mayor Phil Goff about a deal.

Ngarimu Blair, Ngati Whatua Orakei Trust spokesman, issued a surprise statement yesterday: “Ngati Whatua Orakei has long harboured an ambition to buy back our former land and Waitemata seabed,” he said.

“We have made this known over many generations to every incoming mayor and, more recently, signalled this to Phil Goff before and after the election.

“If the opportunity arises we would like to buy it – we are the natural owner and we would do the right thing by the city,” he said.

Ngati Whatua Orakei understood the wider public interest in the Waitemata and the desire of many people to keep the precious land in the hands of Aucklanders, he said.

“We are committed and able to put together a consortium that can achieve that goal whilst also releasing much-needed capital to continue to develop our great city. We look forward to raising this prospect again with the mayor,” Blair said.

“The consortium could include other iwi and the NZ Super Fund,” Blair’s statement said.

“Currently, Auckland Council owns 100 per cent of Ports of Auckland through Auckland Council Investments Ltd. It most recently valued the com-

Equity markets rebound The positive backdrop allowed equity markets to deliver solid gains over the last three months.

In New Zealand Dollar (NZD) terms, the best performing market over the quarter was France, followed by Germany and then the United Kingdom. Australian equities also continued their strong performance, helped by improving sentiment towards commodities and also improved sentiment towards financials.

European markets benefited from the improving outlook. For the United States, political issues including President Trump’s inability to repeal Obamacare and set-backs on building the Mexican wall were largely dismissed by markets, with tax and deregulation reforms more important. Removing regulation alone should save companies billions in costs and encourage CEOs to expand their businesses once the shackles are off, boosting revenues in the future.

New Zealand equities produced positive returns but lagged international markets. Building company downgrades held returns back in the current quarter, as building costs have led to downgrades in margins and expected activity levels.

The NZD was also notably weaker over the quarter, with the attractiveness of New Zealand’s economic story losing some of its appeal relative to the positive momentum in economies further afield.

RBNZ on hold despite inflation Globally, recent inflation data has headline inflation levels nearing Central Bank targets.

However, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) is expected to maintain the Official Cash Rate (OCR) steady at 1.75 per cent for at least the remainder of 2017, with its preference for a weaker NZD and the memory of moving too quickly in 2013, staying its hand. In its decision-making, the RBNZ continues to stress concerns around the potential for increased protectionism in global markets. It is also mindful of migration keeping a cap on wage inflation.

On the other side, housing risks remain, but the use of macro prudential tools (eg higher loan to value requirements), coupled with domestic bank capital requirements, have reduced the supply of credit and raised its cost, causing housing demand to moderate.

However, higher long-term interest rates are still expected, albeit slower than we first thought. This is likely to be driven by global economic strength and a gradual pull-back from quantitative easing in Europe later this year, and potentially the US Federal Reserve (Fed) reducing its balance sheet as securities mature (US$250bn pa) from 2018. The Fed has also signalled a tightening bias, with its median expectations inferring that (if New Zealand rates remain on hold) United States short term interest rates could be higher than those in New Zealand by mid-way through 2018.

Healthy growth momentum redit, money and liquidity indicators in developed economies suggest a healthy pace of growth for the rest of the year. Although manufacturing has eased off highs in some markets over the past month, this has been offset by an increase in non-manufacturing activity, especially in the United States and Euro area. Chinese growth expectations have also recently been upgraded and other Emerging Markets are also benefiting from increased global activity and a pick-up in trade volumes.

Geopolitical risks still remain, although political risks appear to have been overstated with election indications/outcomes in Europe so far more positive than anticipated. This has no doubt been helped by the European Union’s (EU) relatively healthy underlying economic momentum, with growth expectations for 2017 also revised higher.

In the United States, political risks are also likely to have been overstated after several of President Trump’s policy plans failed to gain Senate or Congress support. Tax and deregulation reforms are the more important economic drivers and these issues are expected to be progressed through the rest of this year. As a consequence of growth, headline inflation has accelerated and core inflation in many economies is at or near Central Bank targets. The United States Federal Reserve has already raised rates three times this cycle and is expected to increase rates two to three more times this year.

The European Central Bank has signalled continued support for the EU economy with monetary stimulus, but has also indicated that tapering of quantitative easing measures could begin later this year.

These changes would be supportive of an appreciation of the United States Dollar (USD) and

The iwi owns the land under Vector Arena, as well as the Countdown supermarket land on Quay St and the land under many apartment blocks, including the three Scene blocks on Beach Road.

Council in reverse gear Sue Newman

T

he Ashburton District Council meeting table is where the most important decisions affecting our district are made.

We have every right to expect those decisions will be made by councillors who have all the facts at hand, who have read widely and well about issues and who vote in the belief that the outcome they want is the best one for the district.

That’s the way it’s supposed to be done.

In any group of people there are diverse opinions and among our 12 councillors and mayor that will be no different. With people elected to council, however, there should be a unity of purpose and a commonality of vision.

They don’t have to agree on every issue, they should be free to debate and discuss different points of view, but they should have similar goals and aspirations for their district.

There is no room for people with individual agendas or for small factions who are motivated by obstructionist objectives.

You have to ask, is that what’s happening around our council’s meeting table?

The words that best describe the current council environment would be disharmony and division and there’s a growing feeling that there are a few hidden agendas swaying words and actions.

Seven months post-election we have growing factions. On one side is a group with a solid chunk of local body experience between them – Neil Brown, Stuart Wilson, Russell Ellis, Leen Braam and Liz McMillan.

On the other a diverse cluster – Peter Reveley, Selwyn Price, Mark Malcolm and Alasdair Urquhart.

They appear united in their mission to disagree with the other group.

In the middle there’s a group who are gaining the confidence not to follow the crowd, to make their own decisions – Lynette Lovett, Diane Rawlinson, Thelma Bell and mayor Donna Favel.

The petty politicking that now marks council meetings is challenging for everyone and that’s democracy, but it is also signalling that this group of councillors could well struggle to achieve anything meaningful over the coming two years.

Maybe Stuart Wilson got it right when he said the council was going backwards; whether it does or not may be in the hands of the five power brokers in the middle.

A normal opinion piece written by a normal guy W

hen is being not normal – normal?

Nope it’s not a trick question, I ask it because there are a lot of assumptions and decisions made on what people consider to be normal.

Just ask the Addams Family – and let’s clear up any confusion here, when I say Addams Family, I don’t mean Amy Adams. (Thank you for the reply though to my last little rant.)

It is a good question to ask at the moment because of the extremely exciting, seat grabbing news that parliament did its job and passed an update to an existing act.

Yip, I love it when some organisation goes about its required business and that becomes news.

So anyways, there was an update to the education act – akin to topping up the window washing fluid in your car in terms of impact on the education sector.

Now this little upgrade did have an interesting paragraph or two, namely that schools could enrol children younger than five.

An interesting decision that is absolutely not based on a normal four or five-year-old and does not consider their readiness for formal schooling.

But that is normal in education politics, policy changes that do not consider the people they will impact on the most.

Now back to the question of what is normal and when does that become un-normal, disnormal, non-normal???? What is the opposite of normal? The best way to answer this question is to see life through the eyes of the Addams Family.

The Addams Family consider themselves to be normal, but they are far from it. Tonight will be opening night on what is certainly not a normal show.

There is nothing normal about the dark, gothic set, the ghoulish dialogue and especially the Addams Family themselves.

Strong interpretive performances by the cast bring their characters to life in a very funny way. You have to check out Lurch, played by a fellow principal with more hair than me. He never speaks, yet is able to convey a range of emotions

while all the time performing at the speed of a snail on weed.

The stage is set for some highly amusing interactions when the Addams Family are asked by their sadistic and humourless daughter Wednesday – to act normal. She has invited over her boyfriend and his parents for dinner. Supposedly they are normal.

What follows is some of the best one liners and character acting I have witnessed for a while. Nothing is normal and when one of the drinks is spiked, Wednesdays’ plans for a normal night unravel quickly.

As the story unfolds, what becomes apparent is the family that has a surface appearance of being normal, has in fact struggled with trying to keep up that appearance. The family that has always been seen as kooky, is in fact more like a normal family than you think.

This false ideal of what is a normal family is what makes the show a must-see. Many times in schools we have to work with children who do not fit what is considered to be normal. It is normal that a child who starts school at five, is more than ready to be in the classroom, and that they work alongside someone who does not reach this stage until they

are nearly seven.

It is normal that a family have three children who all have different strengths and abilities at school, and do not achieve in the same way. It is normal for a child to plateau in their learning and even lose traction.

There is no rule for what is normal, which is why the Addams Family perfectly captures family life.

Parents who see the show are going to totally relate to the brother/sister scenes as the two siblings love and hate each other throughout.

Children who see the show (and seriously you must take them, they will love the kooky antics) will really click into the behaviour of the parents and connect with the siblings.

Seeing the Addams Family makes you laugh, at them as characters, and also at yourself, because we are not normal, we are who we are and that is what makes life so great!

May you know the freedom of living for Jesus T he recent computer attack got headlines around the world. In homes and hospitals, computer systems were taken captive and the only way out was to pay a price to free the files.

The software that does the damage is called ransomware because a ransom is paying a price for freedom. While we may associate the word ransom with kidnappings, in earlier days it described the price paid to set someone free from slavery.

Sometimes slaves could save money and buy their own freedom. At other times someone else would pay the price and set them free.

The relevance for us is this.

All people have sold themselves into slavery to sin. There is no

exception. All people have done wrong and serve a bad master.

Furthermore we are not able to break free on our own. Yet this seems a strange idea.

If we are held captive by physical chains, we are very aware of it. Every movement feels restricted, every struggle is resisted and the pressure and bruises are obvious.

Being held captive by sin is more like having colour blindness. There is no real consciousness of inability, no feeling of being restricted. Even when others may try to explain to us the difference in colour of

two blocks we just don’t see it.

And yet those held captive by sin are like those whose computers have been taken over by a virus.

Until the release code has been entered we are helpless to function as we should. The only way to get the release code is by paying the ransom price.

The problem for a slave to sin is that they cannot save for their own release.

You cannot hope to accumulate enough good deeds to outweigh the bad. You cannot rely on sincerity or effort to wipe out the debt. The good news is that Jesus Christ has paid the ransom to set His people free.

Who are His people? Those who live their lives out of trust in Him – not a simple nod of the head to say “yes God, I know

Car strikes pedestrians A former US Navy veteran who appeared intoxicated has driven his car the wrong way up a Times Square and ploughed into pedestrians on the footpath, killing a teenager and injuring 22 other people, authorities and witnesses said. The driver was taken into custody and being tested for alcohol.

Pandemonium erupted when the vehicle barrelled through the tourist hub and came to rest with two of its wheels in the air. The car leaned on a lamppost and steel barriers intended to block vehicles from getting onto the sidewalk.

“He’s just mowing down people,” said Asa Lowe, of Brooklyn, who was standing outside a store when he heard screaming.

“He didn’t stop. He just kept going.”

The crash happened midday on a hot, clear day that brought large crowds of people into the streets to enjoy the good weather. Video posted online showed steam or smoke pouring from the car for a few moments after it stopped moving.

After the car struck a barricade and stopped, the driver climbed out of his vehicle, Lowe said.

“He just started running until people tackled him down,” Lowe said. “Citizens just reacted.”

The driver, 26-year-old Richard Rojas, was taken into custody and was undergoing tests for alcohol and drugs, Police Commissioner James O’Neill said.

Rojas had been arrested at least twice previously for driving while intoxicated, once in 2008 and once in 2015, police said.

He was in custody, and it wasn’t clear if he had an attorney yet who could comment on his behalf.

The crash killed an 18-year-old woman and the injured included her 13-year-old sister, police said.

Police do not suspect a link to terrorism,

Stars pay tribute to Cornell Stars from the music world have paid tribute to US rock singer Chris Cornell following his death at the age of 52.

Cornell, best known as the frontman of Soundgarden and Audioslave, died yesterday in Detroit, leaving his devastated family in shock. Elton John, Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and producer Nile Rodgers spoke of their loss following the star’s death, just hours after Soundgarden played a gig in Detroit.

Elton wrote on Twitter: “Shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Chris Cornell. A great singer, songwriter and the loveliest man.”

Probe big ‘witch hunt’

Macron asserts authority

US President Donald Trump says the Justice Department’s investigation into his campaign’s ties to Russia “the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!”

Trump is responding to the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to lead a probe of allegations that his campaign collaborated with Russia to sway the election.

In another tweet yesterday, he claimed: “With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special councel (sic) appointed!”

He did not provide examples or evidence of any alleged “illegal acts.”

In a written statement, Trump insisted anew there were no nefarious ties between his campaign and Russia.

“A thorough investigation will confirm what we already know there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity,” he declared.

“I look forward to this matter concluding quickly.”

French President Emmanuel Macron has used his first government meeting to assert his authority and set out his vision of a presidency that would be above day-to-day politics.

Pictures from inside the Elysee Palace showed Macron smiling as he sat across the table from Edouard Philippe, his centre-right pick for premier, at the centre of the 22-strong ministerial team he appointed the previous afternoon.

Government spokesman Christophe Castaner said that Macron had expressed his happiness at having brought together a diverse government with politicians from right and left as well as figures from civil society.

The centrist president’s first message had been that his ministers were “no longer confined by labels, and our political backgrounds won’t stop us working intelligently for France,” Castaner said.

Macron told ministers that he “intended to fully exercise all his constitutional prerogatives, but fundamentally his role must be to set a course,” Castaner said.

“Long-term matters belong to the Elysee, and day-to-day or medium term solutions belong to the Matignon” – the prime minister’s office – Castaner cited the president as saying.

Castaner said Macron looked forward to debate and diverse viewpoints in his government, but that discretion and support for government decisions would also be required.

During his visit Prince Harry will meet competitors. “We are excited to celebrate this special occasion and to show Prince Harry what Sydney has to offer when the Invictus Games heads ‘down under’ next year,” Lieutenant General Peter Leahy, chair of the Board of Invictus Games Sydney 2018 said. The games will take place from October 20-27 and will comprise 500 competitors from 18 nations.

The Invictus Games uses the healing power of sport to positively change the lives of wounded, injured and ill active and veteran servicemen and women.

Missing girl found A young Prince William bey with his sailor hat almost falling off.

According to royal author Penny Junor, the event was a turning point for the Queen, who had been concerned about William’s lack of boundaries.

“He became so noisy, cheeky and unruly that the Queen, who was a loving grandmother, let it be known his behaviour was not acceptable,” Junor wrote.

A Sydney teenager was on a plane bound for the US to meet a 39-year-old man on the day her parents reported her missing more than a month ago. Sean Price, 39, is behind bars in a New York jail accused of contacting the 16-year-old from Lindfield on Sydney’s upper north shore on Snapchat in October 2016 and enticing her overseas for sex. The girl, named in US court documents was “Jane Doe”, was reported missing on April 11 and a search of flight records revealed she had left the country, Australian Federal Police told AAP.
