Innocence loss ‘deeply saddening’ By adi avnit

L

ike most people here I have spent the past few days reading news reports and social media posts regarding the horrible terror attack in Christchurch which claimed the lives of 50 innocents.

There is a social media post which I find distasteful, comparing this number to the size of the population in New Zealand, to show people in larger countries how devastating the shootings had been. But this is the wrong way to present it.

The right way is that New Zealand has never experienced anything even remotely similar to Friday’s terror attack.

I looked up mass shootings in New Zealand, and according to the Wikipedia page about it (yes, there is a Wikipedia page about mass shootings in New Zealand) there had been six mass shootings between 1952 and 2019.

I wouldn’t write “only” when it comes to something like this, but that’s not a lot compared to some countries, including western countries.

And beyond that, a terror attack, a massacre on that scale done in the name of some racist ‘ideology’, has never happened in New Zealand.

According to news reports, that was also the driving factor behind the monster who did it – he wanted to show it can happen even here.

In Israel, where I grew up, terror

attacks were not common, but they were a part of day-to-day life. We had to learn to live with it.

When we arrived to New Zealand, I was awed seeing how innocent society here was. I’m deeply saddened for the loss of that innocence.

New Zealand is no longer untouched by the horrors of terrorism on this scale.

We will recover. In Tel Aviv, New York, Oslo, Pittsburgh – people go on.

Working, spending time with family, shopping, praying – life continues.

In fact, it’s up to us to have it continue. Terrorism is about disturbing our way of life, which means we shouldn’t give in. We refuse to be intimidated. We refuse to give up our way of life.

He wanted to show that New Zealand is not a safe and welcoming haven to migrants. Let’s prove him wrong.

Let’s reach out to strangers, to neighbours, to other parents, to newcomers, and let’s welcome them to our community.

After all, isn’t this what New Zealand is all about?

A common theme was that the terror attack was not representative of New Zealand, and people wanted new immigrants to feel safe here as they made this country their home.

“This is not who we are, New Zealand is a safe place and welcomes our friends from all over the world,” wrote one woman.

Following the attack, Avnit urged Mid Cantabrians to reach out to newcomers and migrants in the district.

“Make a connection with a stranger, show how welcoming New Zealand is,” Avnit said.

Hate will not divide us . . .

“Hate will not divide us, but love will bring us together.

On behalf of the people of Mid and South Canterbury, you are all our family,” wrote Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon as he signed the condolence book at Parliament yesterday.

Falloon and fellow MPs at Parliament were yesterday informed by the Speaker of the House Trevor Mallard that increased security measures around out-of-Parliament offices would continue for the re-

mainder of the week.

The Speaker closed all MPs’ offices on Monday and Tuesday in Canterbury and Dunedin, based on advice from police.

He said the closure primarily affected access to his staff rather than to himself, and in recent days he had been meeting with people as normal and had several visits to the Ashburton Masjid.

Falloon was accompanied by fellow National MP Amy Adams at Ashburton’s remembrance vigil last night.

‘We need to stay strong’

They came in their droves, as individuals. Men, women and children of all ages, ethnicities, occupations and backgrounds.

But as the hundreds of people who flooded into the Ashburton Domain Oval for last night’s vigil following last week’s terrorist attacks in Christchurch stood for a moment’s silence, they stood together. As one.

Their differences pushed to one side in a moment of solidarity that stood strong and showed the true beating heart of the Ashburton District.

The night, which was organised by the Ashburton District Council along with other community leaders was as perfect as it could be.

come to terms with the tragedy on our own doorstep lent their shoulders and support to the strong local Muslim community.

“We believe that whatever happens, we need to stay strong, to stay together and to be loving to each other,” said Ashburton Muslim Association secretary, Rajab Mzee in his address to the crowd.

“I want to assure you that the Muslim community of Ashburton will be there for you, like you have been for us, we will work with you and we shall always be together.”

Mzee was one of a number of speakers who took to the stage on the night.

Michelle Brett of the Hakatere Marae opened the night’s proceedings with a touching waiata before Mzee spoke.

Ashburton Muslim Community chair, Mohamed Diab was a late inclusion onto the speakers list but thanked the New Zealand Government, the New Zealand Police and all emergency services for the efforts since the attacks and also thanked the Ashburton District for its love and support during such a difficult time.

Other guest speakers for the night included National’s Rangitata and Selwyn MPs, Andrew Falloon and Amy Adams, Henry Mbambo and Phill Hooper spoke with great passion in a moving speech.

Lisa Anderson led the final stages of the night with a prayer and then the national anthem before 50 balloons were sent into the sky.

Learning to skate but without freezing or the ice

For the next few days, people in the district are going to have an easy option to give ice skating a go, without having to worry about getting cold and wet.

Ice Skating Tours are currently set up in the Allenton School hall and will be operating public ice skating sessions until Sunday.

Allenton School teacher Kerrin Corcoran said previously the students at the school had been able to experience ice skating in Christchurch as part of their education outside of the classroom, but that logistically it had become too difficult to keep doing.

“To be able to manage it and have it here on site is great, and they can all have a go,” she said.

“My class were the first ones to try it out this morning (Tuesday), and there was so much excitement at the start of the day.

“They just had a ball, they were slipping over and just

getting up and keeping on smiling.”

Corcoran said one of the benefits of the ice skating tour was the kids were not even skating on ice, but instead a plastic composite that glides 97 per cent the same as real ice.

“It is really good as the kids don’t slip over and get wet and cold,” she said.

“It took 10 of us about two hours to clip it all together, each panel weighs 28 kilos.”

The ice skating area is not just fun for kids, but there will also be a curling tournament being held on Friday evening that teams can enter.

“We have some teams that have already entered but we would love more, it is often one of those things that people say and say afterwards they wished they had entered,” Ice Skating Tours Robin de Goeij said.

The ice skating is open to the public outside of school hours, with prices of kids (under 16) $8.00, and adults $12.00.

Chance to get civic centre build answers

The community has two opportunities today to get the lowdown on how the cost of building Ashburton’s new civic centre and library doubled in just one year.

Initial estimates put the build cost at $22 million, but when the council called in the experts to undertake a full cost assessment on a project that will meet the district’s needs for the next 50 years, the price was much higher.

Currently the council is look-

ing at four options, ranging from $39 million to $53 million.

Its first choice is for a civic centre and modern library space that will come with a $45 million price tag.

The council has already been through a round of public consultation on the site for the new dual purpose complex, with Baring Square east chosen as the best option, but because the build cost is significantly higher than the estimate built into its long-term plan, it is now going back to the community.

Today two public meetings will be held where the project will be outlined, the contributors to the build cost over-run explained and there will be opportunities to ask questions.

Submissions on the project can be made until April 14.

Two community drop-in days will be held later this month and in early April.

Today’s meetings will be held between 12.30pm and 2pm and from 7pm to 8.30pm in the council’s temporary meeting rooms on Havelock Street.

Free public speaking classes for migrants Speech is something we take for granted, it’s the key to communication and it’s the way we convey our thoughts, feelings, needs and requests to one another.

Oral communication is not easy for everyone, but it is much more difficult for people who are required to communicate in a language other than the one they have grown up speaking.

And to help non-English speakers communicate, the Hakatere Multi-Cultural Council (formerly Mid Canterbury Newcomers’ Network) has teamed up with Ashburton’s Toastmasters and the district’s Welcoming Communities project to provide migrants with a free public speaking course.

strangers on social gatherings, dealing with service providers and government agencies – all of these require speaking coherently and confidently, the council’s co-ordinator Adi Avnit said.

“This course will teach participants to speak about themselves, to introduce others, to think on their feet and answer questions, and even to evaluate other speakers. It will boost their confidence and help them communicate clearly.”

The course will run on Wednesdays every two weeks starting in April. There will be 8-10 meetings, each from 5pm to 7pm. The number of places is limited and are specifically for migrants.

Narinder Singh, 30, a butcher of Tinwald, admitted driving

with excess breath alcohol on State Highway One at Tinwald on February 16.

Singh blew 460mcg and told police he had just finished work and was taking his girlfriend home.

He has a previous drink drive conviction in 2010.

Singh was fined $550, ordered to pay court costs of $130 and disqualified from driving for six months.

Amy Alison Stringer, 22, of Ashburton, blew 701mcg when stopped as part of a routine traffic checkpoint on February 2.

She said she’d had no food during the day.

She was fined $600 and ordered to pay $130 court costs and disqualified from driving for six months.

Hamish David Hood, 19, was fined $400 when he appeared for sentence on charges of drink driving and careless use. He was also disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Hood blew 569mcg after police were called to his crashed car on Rakaia Barrhill Methven Road on February 10.

He failed to take a bend, slid down a bank and through a fence.

Judge Maze noted that Hood and the landowner had met through restorative justice and Hood had paid reparation of $431.

“You should be grateful to the victim who attended and told you the risk you created by your choice to drink and drive.”

Woman pleads guilty to raft of theft charges An Ashburton woman remains in custody after admitting a string of thefts resulting in 22 charges that she admitted yesterday in the Ashburton District Court.

Tina Marie Gill will return to court on May 6 for sentence. She admitted 16 charges of theft, two of burglary and others of making a false complaint to police, dishonestly interfering with a vehicle and unlawfully getting into a car.

Police prosecutor Iva Hitila was surrounded by a host of files as she located at least nine different summaries of Gill’s separate periods of offending and read them to the court.

In most cases, Gill went into service stations or other retailers, asked for cigarettes and tobacco then fled with the goods after her eftpos card was declined.

She managed to steal by this method tobacco worth about $1800. She also stole perfume and other goods worth $976 from Farmers and even took a charity box containing $200 that was intended for the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust.

Sometimes she said sorry, before grabbing the goods and running.

One of the vehicle offences related to a car she took for a test drive and never returned.

Judge Joanna Maze asked for probation officers to prepare a report on sentencing options for May 6.

She said police could prepare a reparation report, though there was no way to know if Gill could make financial amends.

He blew 1123mcg when stopped on Tinwald Westerfield Mayfield Road on December 12.

Judge Maze also sentenced him to an alcohol interlock licence, which he can apply for once the six-month disqualification is over.

It was Aitchison’s third drink drive conviction and followed his second in May last year. He was also convicted of driving contrary to the terms of his limited licence.

His lawyer Paul Bradford said Aitchison had an issue with alcohol and he was trying to rehabilitate.

Judge Maze said he had taken a deliberate and calculated risk to drive that night and he would not have been capable of responding to an emergency situation if a member of the community had been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Further drink drive convictions would likely result in jail time, she said.

Jaidyn Blair Barranger-Tairi, 18, of Hinds, was fined $500 and disqualified from driving for six months. The farm worker had admitted drink driving and dangerous driving on State Highway 1 in the early hours of September 16.

He accelerated heavily near the intersection of the Longbeach Road corner, then lost control of his vehicle; it went through a fence and came to rest against a concrete pole.

A sample of his blood taken at the time showed 111 milligrams of alcohol per 100mg of blood.

Barranger-Tairi was also ordered to pay $111.99 for the blood alcohol analysis.

Judge Maze noted the young

man, described as a hard worker, had paid $800 in reparation for the damage he caused and apologised at restorative justice.

A young man who drove the morning after a night drinking was fined $500 and disqualified from driving for six months when he was sentenced on charges of drink driving and careless use.

Jay Vaifale, 27, had blood taken in hospital after crashing his car at the intersection of Victoria and Cass Streets at 8am on December 1.

It showed 190 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Police said Vaifale failed to give way at the intersection and hit a north-bound vehicle on Cass Street. The vehicles suffered extensive damage.

He was also ordered to pay $111.99 for the blood alcohol analysis.

Farm worker Connor Adam Scannell Ferguson was sentenced to nine months’ supervision and disqualified from driving for six months after admitting charges of drink driving and careless use.

He was also ordered to pay reparation of $100 and $109 for medical costs and analysis of his blood in the early hours of New Year’s Day after his crashed car was found stationary on State Highway One. Scannell Ferguson had driven over a traffic island in Ashburton, damaging his car, which came to a stop at Rangitata. The blood sample taken after police found him there showed 107 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

The 19-year-old was before the court in June last year for another drink driving offence.

Measles cases at 30 The number of confirmed measles cases in Canterbury now stands at 30, with one under investigation.

Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Ramon Pink said measles numbers continue to increase in Canterbury. “Measles is incredibly infectious and continues to circulate in our community. The only way to prevent its spread is immunisation.” No cases so far are from Ashburton District. Dr Pink said there remains a risk of measles spreading when large groups congregate together. “If you were born after 1969 and feel unwell with measles-like symptoms, or have never been vaccinated against measles, you should stay away from large gatherings.” The best way to prevent the virus is by vaccination, which is under way at practices throughout Mid Canterbury after about 1000 vaccines were distributed here over the past week.

Donations over $8m Online donations pouring in for victims of the Christchurch terror attack have raced past $8 million.

More than $6m has been raised on one fundraising site alone – a Givealittle page set up by nonprofit group Victim Support. The page is crowdfunding website Givealittle’s most successful ever.

Elsewhere, New Zealand’s banking industry yesterday donated a further $1m to a separate fund set up at the request of Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel. Victim Support and the NZ Islamic Information Centre – the teams behind the two largest funds – were yet to reveal how they plan to distribute the money raised.

DNA closes rape case A DNA match helped solve a violent historical rape and bring the serial offender to justice. It has been more than 20 years since the woman was attacked in central Auckland. Yesterday, Dennis Tenisi Kalepo was finally held responsible and sentenced in the High Court at Auckland to a total of six years’ imprisonment. Kalepo had raped and assaulted a then 33-year-old woman who was working as a prostitute in Hopetoun St near Karangahape Rd during the early hours of December 2, 1998. - NZME

■ TRUSTPOWER COMMUNITY AWARDS

Lauriston School group off to finals A project based around raising money for their school won Lauriston’s School Support team last year’s Trustpower Community Awards; now they’re about to put that project up against the best community projects in the country.

The group raised $80,000 towards their school’s pool, $32,000 for iPads and computers and it also paid for a modern learning environment, furniture for the playground, and is currently looking at an outdoor learning space.

Last year $10,000 was given to the school for its annual camp.

They will compete in the national finals against 25 other voluntary groups and organisations who were all named Supreme Winner at their respective regional Trustpower Community Awards.

During the national finals, the learning support group will give an eight-minute presentation

sharing their story, their achievements, and why they deserve the title of the Trustpower National Community Awards Supreme Winner.

The presentations will take place on March 30 at Holy Trinity Tauranga. The winner, runner-up and recipient of the Whetu Mataiata Award will then be announced at an awards dinner that evening at Mills Reef.

This year Trustpower will also be presenting a special award, the Trustpower Award, to a group that embodies one or more of the values the company aspires to.

These include the current PRIIDE values, plus a focus on innovation and continuous improvement.

Groups will have the opportunity to network, share ideas, and take in some of the scenery from around the beautiful Tauranga Moana, which is also home to Trustpower’s head office.

Mother’s milk an award winner Mother’s milk is the secret to a good healthy calf, says champion rearer Carol Wilson.

She found herself in the unusual position of having her husband Simon present her the trophy for Heaviest Gift Calf at the Methven Show on Saturday, by virtue of the fact Simon is president of the association this year.

The couple run a small farm at Lauriston.

was born on August 1, and seven-and-a-half months later remained on his mother for all his sustenance.

Simon said 41 entries were received for the competition, which was a good number.

“It’s so well supported,” he said.

■ RUGBY WORLD CUP

Broadband a must-have for RWC Don’t panic if you’re wondering how to watch the Rugby World Cup later this year and you don’t have a smart TV or other device to stream it on.

Spark, which has the rights to screen the games, is planning a mass education campaign to show people all the options for watching the rugby and how to connect via their various devices. The games will not be aired on Sky Television.

The opening game of the Rugby World Cup isn’t until September 20, but people are being encouraged to check what sort of broadband connection they have.

Broadband in Mid Canterbury is delivered mostly by fibre, VDSL and wireless connections.

Chorus says people should be checking they are on the best broadband possible. While urban people have easy access to fibre, many rural people are on a copper network; Chorus says those rural connections can be upgraded to VDSL. The company has a link on its website where people can type in their address and see what type of broadband is available, and who provides it.

They have also launched a fibre

installation tracking tool.

Chorus’ chief customer officer, Ed Hyde said: “With the majority of matches for this year’s RWC only available online we’re eager to see as many Ashburton families as possible connected to the best possible broadband.

“We know demand is going to be high for fibre installations in the lead up to the event and we want to make sure supporters don’t miss out.

“Simply put, fibre is the best, most-reliable and fastest broadband available. It handles online video traffic with ease and its dedicated capacity means it’s made to cope with multiple devices, without any loss of quality or buffering – important for families where watching the match isn’t the only online priority.”

Chorus is expecting online viewing of the tournament to result in a significant spike in data use, particularly where matches are not available free-to-air.

Latest figures from Chorus shows broadband use in Ashburton households has reached record levels, with the average household using 194GB a month, an increase of 35 per cent on a year ago.

If you want to watch any of the World Cup Rugby matches you will need to have a decent broadband connection.

The right time is when you are ready T

he question on the minds of many people around New Zealand and Canterbury in the wake of last Friday’s terror attacks is at what point is it OK to start to move on, to put aside the grief and emotion and return to some sense of normality?

Is now, after last night’s emotion-filled vigil in the Ashburton Domain Oval a good starting point? Or should we continue to let those tragic events rule us?

Some will have already put the memories behind them and chosen to get back to something more familiar, like work. But there are still those, even in our little community, who are walking around with that sense of numbness and uncertainty.

They want to be normal again, but feel the guilt of returning to a normal life while so many others face a very steep and difficult climb to even get close to feeling normal again.

It’s a tough internal battle to have. Guilt is a powerful and often all-encompassing emotion.

But at some point, you need to draw a line in the sand and decide that it’s time to move forward.

How one does that is up to oneself and those around them.

To each their own.

Even from a news sense, we’re having constant discussions about when enough is enough.

When should we stop telling the stories of those who want to commemorate the fallen, when should we stop reporting on the facts coming down the line from Christchurch from the police, the medical professionals and the Government?

There comes a point where all the stories seem to morph into one; where they all seem the same and tell a story which you feel like you’ve already read.

In time it will eventually come to an end.

The stories and tales will cease and mentions of things pertaining to those tragic events will all of a sudden be pushed further back in the paper, overtaken by other significant events and happenings around the country.

And that’s OK. It’s not something anyone should feel guilty about.

Yes, for a huge number of people life has frozen still. But for the remaining population it is there, ready and waiting for the living. It doesn’t make us any less of a human-being by getting back to what we consider to be normal, it’s just our way of moving forward.

There will be no forgetting and we’ll often stop and remember.

March 15 is now forever one of New Zealand’s darkest days and it will be commemorated in the most appropriate of ways.

But it’s OK to start moving forward, to get back to the normal and to live, all the while remembering and honouring those who have tragically had their opportunity to do the same cut short.

Hopefully last night will have provided that stepping stone for many of you.

I know through conversations with people within our community that there are struggles with what’s appropriate and what isn’t.

But paying respects and standing together in solidarity to remember is a pretty perfect place to start.

Today’s highlight in history: On March 20, 1995, in Tokyo, 12 people were killed, more than 5500 others sickened when packages containing the deadly chemical sarin were leaked on five separate subway trains by Aum Shinrikyo cult members.

Which library is the right fit for Ashburton?

T

he Ashburton District Council is working towards a new library and civic centre for our community that would not only meet our current needs, but also those of future generations.

As part of this significant project, we are asking residents what kind of library they think our district needs.

Consultation is now open until Sunday, April 14, and it is crucial that people share their thoughts on the proposed options for the Ashburton Library and Civic Centre project.

Those four options are for a joint library and civic centre that would meet our needs (the council’s preferred option) which would be a $45 million project; a larger library with additional space and features, taking the joint project to $53 million; a smaller library with

less features than in the preferred option, which would be $41 million; or a facility that’s built in two different buildings, the new Civic Centre on Baring Square East and a refurbished library at its current location on Havelock Street ($39 million).

This is a significant project for our district and it needs to be done right. It’s not often that a community is given this opportunity to shape a public facility of this scale, particularly one that will serve future generations.

The features and purpose of libraries has evolved as our society has progressed. New technology as well as changing community needs and expec-

tations have drastically dated those traditional ideas of what a library looks and feels like.

As we’ve seen the advent of computers and the internet change our reliance on physical books and publications for information, communities the world over are reassessing what their public libraries need to provide.

We are now in a unique position to do just that.

Imagine a public facility that you could use to film or record music? Or a space that provides a children’s discovery centre, performance area with tiered seating, or a place for teenagers?

These are some of the features that are being proposed in the various options up for discus-

merous convictions.

In the UK, after 63 people were killed on the roads as a result of drivers texting and using their mobiles, draconian laws were introduced with heavy fines and possible bans. Here it is a paltry $80.

All the above are lethal killers yet the politicians do nothing.

On the other hand, of course, if the Greens have their way our mass mosque murderer will get the vote in prison. Pathetic!

Twelve days later Australian gun laws were amended. New Zealand learned nothing.

Finn quits social media Neil Finn has announced he is quitting social media in the wake of the Christchurch terror attacks. The globally acclaimed Kiwi artist posted on Twitter yesterday that he would no longer participate in social media. “Out of respect for the grieving families of Christchurch and in consideration of their vast public tragedy I will no longer take part in social media,” he posted. “These platforms have enabled the spread of hateful ideology and I will not participate anymore.” His tweet gathered a wave of support immediately after it was posted.

“Thanks for your time Neil, and your decision. Stay safe,” someone commented.

Death toll rockets up More than 1000 people were feared dead in Mozambique four days after a cyclone slammed into the country, submerging entire villages and leaving bodies floating in the floodwaters.

“It is a real disaster of great proportions,” President Filipe Nyusi said.

Cyclone Idai could prove to be the deadliest storm in generations to hit the impoverished southeast African country of 30 million people.

It struck Beira, an Indian Ocean port city of a half-million people, and then moved inland to Zimbabwe and Malawi with strong winds and heavy rain.

But it took days for the scope of the disaster to come into focus in Mozambique, which has a poor communication and transportation network and a corrupt and inefficient bureaucracy.

Nyusi said that while the official death toll stood at 84, “It appears that we can register more than 1000 deaths”.

Emergency officials cautioned that while they expect the death toll to rise significantly, they have no way of knowing if it will reach the President’s estimate.

More than 215 people were killed by the storm in the three countries, including more than 80 in Zimbabwe’s eastern

Chimanimani region, according to official figures.

Hundreds more were reported missing and nearly 1000 homes destroyed in eastern Zimbabwe alone.

UN agencies and the Red Cross helped rush emergency food and medicine by helicopter to the stricken countries.

Mount Chiluvo in central Mozambique was badly hit by flooding.

One resident said he heard a loud noise, like an explosion, and suddenly saw a river of mud rolling towards his home.

“I was indoors with my children, but when we looked we saw mud coming down

the road towards the houses and we fled,” Francisco Carlitos told Lusa, the Portuguese News Agency.

The family lost their home and possessions but safely reached higher ground.

The country’s leader spoke after flying by helicopter over Beira and two rural provinces, where he reported widespread devastation.

“The waters of the Pungue and Buzi rivers overflowed, making whole villages disappear and isolating communities, and bodies are floating,” Nyusi said.

The Red Cross said that 90 per cent of Beira was damaged or destroyed.

Hollywood sex scandal Warner Bros chief executive Kevin Tsujihara has stepped down from his position following claims that he promised roles to an actress with whom he was having an affair. Tsujihara is one of the highest-ranking Hollywood executives to be felled by sexual misconduct allegations. Earlier this month, WarnerMedia launched an investigation after a Hollywood Reporter article detailed text messages between Tsujihara and British actress Charlotte Kirk dating back to 2013.

Fonterra tipped to sell more assets

Half of New Zealand workers have seen their job responsibilities change as a result of automation, according to an online poll by recruitment consultants Hays, with 16 per cent saying automation had impacted their job “significantly” as their duties had changed as a result, or their roles became redundant.

Another 34 per cent said their job has been impacted “partially”, with some tasks automated and non-routine duties increasing.

The final 50 per cent said automation had so far had no impact on their day-to-day job responsibilities.

“There’s no denying that robots will continue to join workplaces across the country, with professionals able to benefit if they take the appropriate action now,” says Adam Shapley, managing director of Hays in New Zealand.

“Even if you are one of the 50 per cent of skilled professionals whose job has not yet been impacted by automation, it’s essential you don’t rest on your laurels. Automation of routine and repetitive tasks is inevitable.”

Though the thought of losing your job to a robot may be alarming, the reality is that robots and humans will likely need to work together – whether that’s the human working on repairs and training to do with using the robots, or through side-by-side, collaborative, applications – we’ll need to learn to get along.

Collaborative robotics, or “cobots” are not just popping up in robotics, they are also being developed for customer service roles where language translation is needed, as well as in hospital settings and in the classroom.

The thought of losing your job to a robot may be alarming, but the reality is that robots and humans will likely need to work together. living from their creative thinking – it’s believed creative jobs will be less prone to automation as human imagination is harder to replicate.

No matter what industry, the more repetitive tasks you do look likely to be automated in the future, which provides the benefit that human roles can be developed in a higher capacity or for higher responsibilities.

“To prepare, consider what your job would look like if all the routine and repetitive duties you perform were automated,” says Shapley.

“Then determine how you could fill the time freed up by the automation of these tasks in a way that adds greater strategic value to your employer. Upskill in the higher-value areas you’ve identified so you’ll be ready for the automation of your lower-value, repetitive tasks,” he says.

“Remember, constant upskilling is the key to remaining relevant and employable when lower-value tasks are automated,” says Shapley.

Hays believes constant upskilling is “the new normal” for any-

one hoping to stay relevant in an increasingly mechanised world and professional development is no longer a “nice to have”, but an essential to being able to function successfully in the New Zealand workplace.

Infometrics chief forecaster Gareth Kiernan said workers needed to be better equipped for the future, which its research showed would see automation of a third of Kiwi workplaces by 2036.

“Workers will require increasing access to skills-based training as the workplace continues to rapidly evolve,” he says.

Infometrics estimates the majority of automation will happen at the lower-skilled positions in industries such as agriculture, forestry, manufacturing and the service sector, but there are also industries such as stockbroking likely to be affected.

On the bright side, remember the benefits – such as better job satisfaction once the more repetitive tasks are automated, new technology jobs created to service the robotics and an opening for innovative designers to create automation options.

While Fonterra has earned good profits out of South America the region may not be viewed as strategic as Asia is for the diary company.

Chief executive Miles Hurrell has previously said that Fonterra has been focused on fixing businesses that are not performing, such as Fonterra Brands in Oceania.

Meanwhile, former investment banker Scott St John quietly left the board of the dual-listed Fonterra Shareholders’ Fund last month.

St John is a former director of broking house and investment firm FNZC, which happens to also be advising Fonterra on the Tip Top sale.

Fonterra’s strategic review was announced at the same time it reported its historic first annual net loss of $196 million and debt of $6.2 billion.

The poor figures were affected by a legal settlement with Danone after a false botulism scare in 2013 and a $439 million writedown on Beingmate.

Fonterra is poised to announce more details of its strategic review and may be planning to pull out of South America, sources say.

The dairy giant releases its half-year result today and is expected to update the market on an asset divestment programme designed to reduce debt by $800 million.

Fonterra has previously confirmed its ice cream business Tip Top is up for sale and bids for that business were due in last week.

It has also said its activities in China are under review including its shareholding in struggling Chinese infant formula company Beingmate, while its farming assets in China may also be considered for sale.

However both those investments are seen as difficult to exit and Fonterra maybe looking elsewhere for possible quick trade sales.

Sources say Fonterra’s South American business is one that could be realised under the timeframe the co-operative is working toward (in December it said it needed to cut its debt by the end of July).

Don’t undervalue the thigh C

hicken thighs are sadly undervalued, usually giving way to the more glamorous chicken breast. But when it comes to chicken that is always tender, juicy and is at home roasted, baked, casseroled or barbecued, it takes a lot to beat a chicken thigh – bone in or out.

Honey mustard chicken thighs 1T honey 1T wholegrain mustard 2 garlic cloves, crushed Zest and juice 1 lemon 4 chicken thighs, skin on 300g new potatoes, unpeeled, smaller left whole, bigger halved 1T olive oil 100g spinach 100g frozen peas

Sticky Chinese chicken thighs 8 chicken thighs, skin on and bone in 4T hoisin sauce 2t sesame oil 2T clear honey 1 1/2 t Chinese five-spice powder Thumb-sized knob of ginger, grated 2 garlic cloves, grated Bunch spring onions, chopped 50g cashew nuts, toasted Cooked brown rice, to serve ■ Heat oven to 200°C. ■ Arrange the chicken thighs in a large roasting tin and slash the skin 2-3 times on each thigh.

■ Mix together the hoisin, sesame oil, honey, five-spice, ginger, garlic and some seasoning.

■ Pour over the chicken and toss to coat.

■ Chicken can be marinated for two hours or overnight.

■ Roast, skin-side up, for 35 mins, basting at least once.

■ Stir through the cashew nuts and sprinkle the spring onions over the chicken ■ Return to the oven for 5 mins, then serve with brown rice.

Greek-style roast chicken 750g new potatoes, thickly sliced lengthways 2T olive oil 8 chicken thighs, skin on and bone in 300g cherry tomatoes 100g black olives 1/2 small pack oregano leaves 200g pack feta, crumbled into chunks 2T red wine vinegar ■ Heat oven to 200°C. ■ Put the potatoes in a roasting tin and drizzle with half the oil.

■ Sit the chicken thighs on top, drizzle over the remaining oil and season.

■ Roast in the oven for 30 mins.

■ Add the cherry tomatoes, olives, oregano leaves and feta, then drizzle with the red wine vinegar.

■ Return to the oven for another 25-30 mins until the chicken is cooked through and golden.

1T sunflower oil 1 onion, chopped 450g boneless, skinless chicken thigh, cut into bite-sized pieces 165g jar korma paste 2 garlic cloves, crushed 500g sweet potato, cut into small chunks 400g can chopped tomatoes 100g baby spinach Basmati rice, to serve ■ Heat the oil in a pan, add the onion and cook over a low heat for about 5 mins until softened.

■ Increase the heat slightly, add the chicken pieces and brown.

■ Stir in the curry paste and garlic, cooking for 2 mins.

■ Add 100ml water, the sweet potatoes and chopped tomatoes.

■ Simmer for 20-30 mins until the chicken is cooked through and the sweet potato is tender.

■ Add a splash more water if it starts to look dry.

■ Season to taste and add the spinach, removing the pan from the heat and stirring until the spinach has wilted. Serve with basmati rice.

1 long red chilli 3T tomato purée 3T olive oil 3 garlic cloves 8 skinless chicken thighs 500g new potatoes 4 thyme sprigs 140g smokey bacon, cut in chunks 400g tomatoes, halved cherry or baby plum, Green salad and bread, to serve (optional) ■ Heat oven to 200°C. ■ Find a large roasting tin that will hold the chicken thighs and potatoes in a single layer.

■ Halve the chilli, scrape out and discard the seeds if you don’t like it too hot, and remove the stalk.

■ Put in a small food processor or mini chopper with the tomato purée, olive oil and garlic.

■ Whizz to a paste, then spread over the chicken.

■ Add the chicken and potatoes to the tin with a good grinding of black pepper and some salt.

■ Mix everything together well with your hands. Add the thyme and roast for 30 mins.

■ Stir in the bacon and roast for 15 mins more.

■ Add the tomatoes and roast for another 15 mins until the tomatoes have softened and the chicken is cooked. Serve straight from the pan and eat with a green salad and some bread, if you like, for mopping up the juices.

Hint:

While chicken thighs have more fat content than the breasts, it is, according to Body Ecology, monounsaturated fat and that can help aid in weight loss/control and reduce cholesterol numbers.

Not only that, but thighs definitely have a stronger flavour than breasts, making it a lovely, tender morsel for things like Thai green curry and roasted dishes.

Sweet potato chicken

■ Heat oven to 200°C. ■ In a small bowl, mix together the honey, mustard, garlic and the lemon zest and juice.

■ Pour the marinade over the chicken thighs and season.

■ Put the chicken, skin-side up, on a large baking tray, then dot the new potatoes in between them.

■ Drizzle the oil over the potatoes and sprinkle with sea salt.

■ Roast in the oven for 35 mins until the chicken skin caramelises and is charred in places.

■ Add the spinach and peas to the roasting tray.

■ Return to the oven for 2-3 mins until the spinach has begun to wilt and the peas are hot and covered in the mustardy sauce.

Add chicken and toss until combined. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour if time permits.

■ Thread chicken, lime leaf, chicken, lime leaf and chicken on to each skewer. Transfer to a large plate. Heat a char-grill over a medium heat. Cook skewers for 3 minutes on each side or until cooked through. Transfer to a serving platter. Cover to keep warm.

■ Bring a saucepan of water to

the boil. Add snow peas and cook for 1 minute or until tender.

Drain.

■ Put rice noodles into a bowl and cover with boiling water.

Stand for 1 minute then drain.

Serve skewers with rice noodles and snow peas. Sprinkle with chopped peanuts.

Birmingham nervous Birmingham face an anxious wait before learning whether an expected points deduction is severe enough to plunge them into a relegation battle. The second-tier club have breached the Football League’s profitability and sustainability rules and face a possible 12-point deduction and a transfer ban. The Blues, currently seven points off the play-offs, lost STG37.5 million in the 12 months to the end of June 2018, more than double the previous year’s deficit.

Swimmers hit the pond Swimmers swapped the comfort of an indoor pool for the challenge of a pond on a Hinds farm on Sunday.

The Ashburton Masters Swimmers group hosted an open water swim which was invitation only, and spokesperson Helen Argyle said the event had proven hugely popular, with some brilliant feedback having been received.

There were two distance op-

tions – one lap or two laps of the pond – and of those who did the 1.8km two lap event Sarah Parker was the quickest, covering the distance in 28.56 minutes, with Tamara Grant second in 29.41 minutes.

Ashburton’s Sarah O’Grady was next in 36.41 minutes, with another Ashburtonian – Stephen Mealings – next in 37.33 minutes.

He was followed by Rolleston

woman Hannah Drury, who just over a year ago swam across Lake Taupo. She finished in 38.44 minutes.

Eileen Pullar, Lindy Miller and Mike Hansen were the next three home.

An Ashburton swimmer was the fastest through the water in the one lap event, too, with Alison Fleming covering the distance in 19.40 minutes, followed

Argyle said that swimmers from Ashburton, Christchurch and Timaru took part in the event, which wouldn’t have been possible without the farm owners, Laurence and Gaye Thompson.

Perth Glory have re-signed Socceroos defender Jason Davidson for the 2019-20 A-League campaign.

The 27-year-old has been an ever present in the Glory’s dominant campaign after he signed a oneyear deal following his return from Europe. Robinson touted as Olympic medal-winner Kiwi ski sensation Alice Robinson’s coach predicts the 17-yearold will be contending for at least two medals at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

The Queenstown skier produced a stunning performance to win silver behind overall World Cup champion Michaela Shiffrin in the giant slalom at the World Cup Finals in Andorra yesterday, beating world champion Czech Petra Vlhova into third.

Following on from placing 17th at the senior world championships in Sweden last month, when she clocked the fastest time in the second run, and her gold medal-winning performance at the

junior world championships in Italy, Robinson has announced herself as one of alpine skiing’s brightest prospects.

Her coach, Tim Cafe, believes she will establish herself in the top five of the giant slalom in the next World Cup season starting in late October, with her world ranking now up to 19.

“It moves her start position up, which can make a big difference if the course conditions deteriorate.

“With a start position like that, she can look at getting consistent top five results, and from my perspective, before January 15 next year, I would like to see her in the

top five on the ranking list,” Cafe said.

Even more significant for Cafe was a result that went largely unnoticed a few days before Robinson’s stunner in Andorra.

She finished second in the Europa Cup super G finals in Italy.

It’s the second tier of Alpine skiing below the World Cup circuit, but Cafe believes that result puts her among the world’s top 40 super G skiers.

“She got second at a Europa Cup super G with almost no super G training at all.

“What she’s proving is she has got more than one discipline, and going into the next Olympics, I

think she will be a medal contender in more than one discipline.”

Robinson returns home this week after four months in Europe and Cafe knows when she returns for the next Northern Hemisphere campaign, she will no longer be able to fly under the radar.

“Everything is going to change now; she will have sponsors behind her and will have different staffing and more pressure that goes along with that, and because of the results, that brings pressure.” Cafe said.

“But in my opinion, she has the mental toughness and is competitive enough to not let that affect her.”

Snow Sports New Zealand have indicated in consultation with High Performance Sports New Zealand that some funding will now be made available for the country’s latest winter sports sensation.

“We will take all the support we can get and people want to get behind someone who is successful and a great story,” Cafe said.

“Everything changes now and it’s uncharted territory for her and her family, learning about the whole process of sponsorship.

“She’s at the level now where the little extra things they can do matter, and that’s what it’s about now.”

Warriors, Manly join hands The Warriors and Manly Sea Eagles want to do their part for Christchurch as they prepare to clash in one of the first sporting events in the city following the mosque attacks which killed 50.

The Sea Eagles will play hosts in the round three NRL clash Saturday week at Christchurch Stadium, the regular home of the Crusaders Super Rugby side.

The Crusaders’ next home game is on April 6.

Following Saturday’s abandoned game against the Highlanders in Dunedin the ninetime Super Rugby champions have two away games against the Waratahs and Hurricanes.

Walco director Justin Wallace, organiser of the Sea Eagles-Warriors clash, said both teams wanted to do something to support Christchurch following the mosque shootings.

“After such a terrible tragedy in our city both clubs have reached out and they’ve asked what they can do to support the community.

“We’re also acutely aware of the sensitive nature of what’s happened,” Wallace told Radio Sport.

“There’s a few ideas we’ve discussed but we want to make sure what we do is appropriate, we don’t want to step on anyone’s toes or step out of line so we’ll continue discussions with city leaders and see where we land.

Dufty sets sights on No. 1 role at Dragons There’s a little bit of Matt Dufty’s pride that hurts after being pushed back to the St George Illawarra bench.

But he’s staying positive after acknowledging skipper Gareth Widdop is too good not to be picked ahead of him.

The Dragons have been slated as top four contenders this NRL season though much will depend on their spine puzzle as Paul McGregor attempts to fit five players into four spots.

Marquee recruit Corey Norman and former Brisbane teammate Ben Hunt have been selected to start in the halves, pushing Widdop back to fullback and last year’s No.1 Dufty to the bench.

Asked about McGregor’s decision to use him as a reserve and his ambitions to be the Dragons’ long-term No.1, Dufty, 23, admitted it stung him “a little bit”.

“But you’ve got to look at the big picture, how many people get to play in the NRL every week?

“It’s just about appreciation, I could sook and have my head down but I’ve got to do my role in the team and bring energy when I get out on the field.”

A history of thrilling encounters has made it a must-watch rivalry in the NRL, now a series of player switches has added an extra layer to the Queensland derby between Brisbane and North Queensland.

Next-gen rowing talent get on the water Prospective new rowers turned out in big numbers to an open day put on by the Ashburton College Rowing Club at the weekend.

The open day attracted 18 possible new rowers, who were all put out on the water in one of the club’s quad boats, and some tested their skills on some of the ergs indoors, too. With the first open day of the season done and dusted, Ashburton College rowers are now turning their attention to the national secondary schools’ rowing regatta – the Maadi Cup – which will get under way at Lake Karapiro in the Waikato on Monday.

Gatland firms as contender Warren Gatland’s third Six Nations Grand Slam with Wales at the weekend only served to fuel speculation about his future after the World Cup with the New Zealander now boasting a coaching CV that makes him a serious contender for the All Blacks job.

Wales beat Ireland 25-7 on Sunday to clinch their fourth Six Nations title under the former All Blacks hooker, which positioned them as one of the favourites for the global showpiece in Japan later this year.

The 55-year-old has already said he would return home after the tournament and with All Blacks coach Steve Hansen also stepping down, contenders are lining up to replace him.

Gatland’s name has constantly been mentioned, along with Hansen’s current assistant Ian Foster and the Crusaders’ Scott Robertson, as one of the most likely contenders to replace Hansen.

Joe Schmidt, who is also stepping down after the World Cup, had also been in the mix after he led Ireland to three Six Nations titles, their first two victories over New Zealand and a world ranking of No.2.

Schmidt, however, has said he would take time off in 2020 to spend time with family and Ireland’s spluttering form in this year’s Six Nations – they finished third and were well beaten by England and Wales – might have taken the shine off his CV anyway.

Tough blow for Squire

Highlanders and All Black loose forward Liam Squire is out of action for eight to 10 weeks after injuring his knee. Squire, who turns 28 today, picked up the injury at training late last week and is now set for more time on the sidelines.

Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger said Squire had torn the medial ligament in his knee. ‘’It is a terrible blow for him. The guy has worked so hard to get back to where he is.

These things happen in rugby and unfortunately they have happened to a guy who has already had a bit of adversity this year,’’ he said. “He has had some poor luck, all right.’’

It is a big blow for Squire who has not played at all this season. He was suffering from a hip injury and did not play in the opening month but after some gradual improvement got back on the training field fully last week. - ODT

Sport takes second place

Concerns raised over Ferns v men game

T

oday, I am a sports reporter, but in 2017 when the Ashburton Masjid first opened its doors, I

wasn’t.

Back then, I was working at another publication and covering a bit of everything, including the opening of Ashburton’s first Masjid.

Having since gone back to my sporting roots, I didn’t really think I’d find myself writing about the Masjid again.

But, on Monday I experienced the most surreal moment, when I found myself writing the words rugby, terror attack, Christchurch and Ashburton, in the same story.

Even now, five days on from the attacks on two Christchurch mosques which claimed 50 lives, it is hard to believe it happened.

It is also hard to believe it happened just an hour up the road, and to a community with which my only dealings had ever been positive.

When I heard the old church on the corner of Jane Street and Archibald Street had been sold to the local Muslim community back in 2017, I got in contact with a member of the local Muslim association and arranged to do a story.

I had heard that there’d been a few grumblings from nearby residents who weren’t so happy that a Masjid was opening so close, and I headed along to meet him probably thinking that would be the story.

But, it wasn’t.

There was zero negativity.

The Muslim community were just happy to have a home in Ashburton, a peaceful place where they could conduct their daily prayers and be a real part of their local community.

I learnt a lot about our Muslim community that day – how big it was and where in the world everyone had come from – and was invited along to their first Saturday night prayers.

I went along, not really knowing what to expect, and found myself in a room with all the women and children.

A mix of nationalities and ages, they all had one thing in common – they were absolutely lovely and welcomed me with open arms.

As a reporter, my job was to ask questions. But I don’t recall saying too much that night. I was just taking it all in.

It was Ramadan, and as night had fallen, there was a feast spread out on the floor and dinner was under way.

I was invited to help myself but felt bad about digging in – I’d had my tea before I left, whereas everyone else in the room hadn’t eaten since early that morning.

I was there when they lined up for their prayers that night.

Some of the young ones took part, while others hung off their mum’s clothes – just like my kids would.

These people were everyday people, just like you and me.

They were New Zealanders who had a right to feel safe in their own homes, and their place of worship.

A lot of the people there that night had made the trip down from Christchurch to attend.

It was a big deal for the Muslim community, Ashburton having its own Masjid, and since then they’d done a lot of work to the place, including fully fencing it to ensure the safety of their children.

It sickened me to think that some of the people who were there that night, may have been caught up in the horror that unfolded in Christchurch on Friday.

Those women and children who I sat with and spoke to that night do not deserve to be going through what so many people are today – no-one does.

These people weren’t hurting anyone.

They were just going about their daily business, following their beliefs, and living their lives the same way any Cantabrian – or New Zealander – has the right to.

I knew very little about the Muslim religion heading in to that first interview about the new Masjid, but I left with a lot of knowledge, and a lot of respect.

I know that anyone reading this was probably – and rightly so – expecting to read about sport, after all I am a sports reporter tasked with writing you a weekly sport column.

But sometimes, sport gets trumped by life. So today I decided to take a break from giving you my thoughts on sport, because really, sport hasn’t been a priority in Canterbury in the past few days.

■ RUGBY

Match cancellation costly business The Highlanders believe the right decision was made to cancel the derby game against the Crusaders, even though they will lose a significant sum by not playing.

The franchise said yesterday it did not have insurance to cover the financial losses incurred and many people had to be consulted before the decision was made.

The decision to cancel was described yesterday as a difficult decision.

Highlanders chief executive Roger Clark said the game would not be replayed and Saturday was uncharted territory for the franchise and New Zealand Rugby.

“The way Saturday panned out for all of us was something we had never been through before.

“We had worked out there were a lot of people that had to be consulted; a large number of stakeholders, including the young men who had to go out and play the game,” Clark said.

“In the end, we came up with what we all agreed was the right decision.”

The onus was on security on Friday night, and to make sure Forsyth Barr Stadium was right to stage the game. But as the day went on, other issues emerged.

“To start with even on the Friday night, the biggest concern was security. So consultation was held with national and local

Obviously there were wider issues to canvass, Clark said.

He said the wider issues were the wider Muslim community and whether it was respectful to hold a game of rugby at the time.

The final call was ultimately made by the Sanzaar executive and New Zealand Rugby but other stakeholders such as the sides and the New Zealand Rugby Players Association also had input.

Clark confirmed the Highland-

ers did not have insurance to cover the financial loss of having to refund all tickets.

A crowd of at least 20,000 was expected, likely the Highlanders’ biggest of the season.

When asked if he would seek compensation from Sanzaar or New Zealand Rugby, Clark said he did not have an answer.

The Highlanders were back at training yesterday and play the Blues in Auckland on Friday night.

He said an incident at the stadium about noon on Saturday had no bearing on the decision to cancel the game. Police were

called after a man was seen acting suspiciously but no further action was taken.

The teams received two competition points each, though the game is likely to be recorded as not being played rather than a draw.

Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger said his heart sunk when he heard of the attack.

Mauger, who comes from Christchurch, had been in contact with family and friends and was glad to say all were safe.

While the Silver Ferns’ upcoming clash against the New Zealand Invitation Men’s team is being hailed as quality competition for the national side ahead of July’s World Cup, former head coach Yvonne Willering has sounded a warning.

Netball New Zealand confirmed yesterday that the Silver Ferns would play the men’s side in June as part of an International Netball Series including the Fiji Pearls and an All Stars side at Auckland’s Pulman Arena.

Silver Ferns coach Noeline Taurua said it would be a pleasant challenge for her side, but speaking to Radio Sport, Willering said she held fears over the increased chance of injury and questioned whether the timing was right.

“The teams have played against the men for a number of years but we’ve had constraints in place because they do play a different game,” Willering said.

“My only concern is the injury factor because they’re going to come out hard and strong.

“It’s in front of the New Zealand public, it’s televised, this is [the men’s] opportunity to showcase what they’re about so even if they’ve got some constraints put on them ... my concern is the injury.”

Willering, who led New Zealand to a silver medal in the 1998 Commonwealth Games, said the match-up was a catch-22.

“Will it be a tough game? Absolutely.

“Do the Ferns require that? Yes, definitely, but again, we’ve got to go into the World Cup with no injuries,” she added.

“They’re so unpredictable and they’re just coming together as an invitational team so it’s not like you can read play for a start ... they are strong, they’re tough and some of these guys have been playing for quite a while.

“They’ve just got to be a little bit careful.”

Meanwhile, Taurua said she looked forward to the game, even if it didn’t result in a win for her side.

“This is big, not only for the Silver Ferns but for our brand ... no one’s ever done it before,” Taurua said.

“The only offset to that is losing before the Worlds, possibly. More than likely they could beat us because we don’t have the elevation or that same aerial gain.

“But we’ve gone in the past when we’ve absolutely smashed opposition going into the World Cup and we over-inflate what we think we are so I’m happy with it, I think it’s great ... we’re going to get as good quality competition as we can leading into the Worlds and that’s what it’s all about.”

Sydney rain not a problem Multiple Group One winning Kiwi mare Danzdanzdance has arrived in Sydney for a tilt at Saturday’s Gr.1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and although the dismal weather forecast has many connections on edge, the same cannot be said for trainers Chris Gibbs and Michelle Bradley.

The Mastercraftsman mare put her rivals to the sword in the Gr.1 Captain Cook Stakes (1600m) and Gr.1 Zabeel Classic (2000m) on soft and heavy going respectively and she travels to Sydney on the back of a narrow defeat to New Zealand’s star mare Melody Belle in an epic showdown in the Gr.1 New Zealand Stakes (2000m), again on a heavy surface.

“Michelle is really pleased with the way she has travelled and said she ate about two thirds of her feed, despite arriving quite late, and she has drunk plenty of water which is the main thing,” Gibbs said.

“They are staying with Jim and

Greg Lee in Randwick, the same place she stayed last year.

“She settled well last time so hopefully she will bounce out of it and put on that little bit of weight that she shed off on the trip, which is usually the normal thing.”

Gibbs said Danzdanzdance is a different horse to the physically and mentally fragile filly that finished fifth in the Gr.1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) and sixth in the Australian Oaks 12 months ago.

“She is just more mature and doing really well between her runs this time,” Gibbs said.

“We set our plan regarding Sydney some time ago, whereas last year we threw a nomination in for Australia as an option.”

Gibbs said he felt Danzdanzdance didn’t show her best in Sydney as a three-year-old after a lengthy New Zealand campaign where she went from breaking maiden ranks to running third in the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m).

Opie Bosson The Ruakaka trainer is pleased with the way the mare has come through her narrow defeat in the New Zealand Stakes, which was a last-minute addition to her programme.

“The way she came through it, I’m actually very happy we did run her because I think the track is going to be a bit testing on Saturday by the looks of it,” Gibbs

said. “I certainly want it to rain, that’s going to help us. You never want it bottomless but she will go into it fit and if I had a choice between one extreme or the other I’d take heavy over firm.”

Gibbs was proud of the mare’s effort in what was a thrilling New Zealand Stakes where Danzdanzdance and Melody Belle staged a two-horse battle for much of the length of the Ellerslie straight.

“It was just a great race and it was billed as being a matchrace,” he said.

“Sometimes the event doesn’t match the hype but I think everyone got their money’s-worth out of that one, it was brilliant.

“I know how good Melody Belle is and I just hope that form stacks up over in Australia as that is where we would like to compete well.

Danzdanzdance is rated a $7 third favourite behind the James Cummings-trained Avilius and will be ridden by Opie Bosson.

And she won’t have to meet New Zealand’s other superstar pacing three-year-old Princess Tiffany when she gets there. Trainer Barry Purdon confirmed yesterday he will aim the Sires’ Stakes Championship winner at the Oaks at Melton on April 27. That means heading over 10 days before to contest the compulsory prelude at Melton on April 20. The preludes are worth $24,000 and the Oaks $150,000.

Oscar’s career in doubt The future of one of New Zealand’s most talented young trotters is in doubt. Oscar Bonevena is set to miss most if not all of the remainder of the season and trainer Mark Purdon admits the three-year-old’s career is in doubt. “I hope that isn’t the case but it could be,” says Purdon. Oscar Bonevena has developed a cyst in one of his knees and Purdon says vets suggest it could be a degenerative problem.

“We are still learning about it as our vet said it is so rare it is something they see only every couple of years,” said Purdon.

Thunder burned The Thunder were foundering without their star point guard, and the Miami Heat – like Oklahoma City trying to improve their playoff position – took advantage.

Goran Dragic had 26 points and 11 assists, and Dwyane Wade added 25 points in the Heat’s 116-107 win yesterday over the Thunder, who played without the suspended Russell Westbrook.

Kelly Olynyk added 18 points and nine rebounds for Miami, which moved within one game of seventh-place Brooklyn in the Eastern Conference.

The Heat snapped a six-game losing streak against Oklahoma City, which now has lost nine of its last 13 games to fall to sixth in the Western Conference.

“We put our track shoes on, put all our pads on and went out there ready for a tough basketball game that has a playoff kind of feel to it,” said Wade, who played 33 minutes.

Paul George scored 31 points with nine rebounds and Jerami Grant had 27 points and 10 rebounds for Oklahoma City.

“It’s not like we’re cringing when we go to the bench. It takes a collective effort.”

“They hit some tough shots,” Schroder said.

“We forced them to shoot non-paint twos and D-Wade and Dragic did a great job tonight. Credit to them.

“We’ve just got to keep working every game, try to get better as a team and play together.

“Especially during tough stretches like we’re going through now, we’ve got to stay together as a team.”

Ashburton’s Mark MacGregor took out the big title on offer at the Clearwater Aquatic Club’s annual club championships.

MacGregor skis to top title Water skiers packed up their skis and headed for the hills at the weekend, to take part in the Clearwater Aquatic Club’s annual club championships.

Skiers headed to the lake with a terrible weather forecast ahead of them, but as it turned out conditions were ideal, so the record number of competitors who turned up were rewarded for their

efforts with perfect water.

A few of those who took to the water tried new disciplines and there were a number of junior entries spread across all the sections, so all in all, organisers said they couldn’t have asked for much better.

The standout performer who claimed the Champion of Champions Trophy for best all-round

skier was Ashburton’s Mark MacGregor. He also claimed the title for senior men’s slalom after a friendly rivalry with last year’s title winner Marty Green.

Penny Coleman again showed her best form taking the senior women’s slalom, while the boys’ slalom was won by Bradley Shearer and girls’ slalom winner was Alia Forrester.

The junior boys’ slalom was won by Josh Bellew and the junior girls’ slalom by Stella Clyne, while the sub junior slalom winner was George Bell and wakecrossing was Lucy Brake.

There were great entries in the tricks section, with Sonia Etheridge claiming the senior women’s tricks.

Green took out the senior men’s

tricks, with Jayden Etheridge claiming the boys’ tricks and Forrester taking out the girls’ tricks.

The junior boys’ tricks was won

by Bellew.

The wakeboarding competition again proved popular, with Coleman taking out the senior title and Kaden Forrester taking out the junior title, while Riley Green won the novice wakeboard section.
