Meals on Wheels seeks new helpers

There’s no need to go hungry if you can not buy your own groceries and cook your own meals.

And that is thanks to Ashburton Health Services’ Meals on Wheels volunteers, who turn out in their dozens day upon day, week after week and year after year.

With a friendly knock on the door and a hello, they deliver meals freshly cooked straight from the Ashburton Hospital kitchen, having transported them in chilly bins in their own cars.

Among them are mother and daughter Noreen Tod and Kathleen Goulter.

“I have helped mum for about 20 years, on and off. I just love helping people, and mum’s the same, she’s a good

role model,” Goulter said.

Tod has been helping out with Meals on Wheels ever since the service started, which she thinks was about 40 years ago.

She does it for a few weeks each year with the Catholic Women’s League and also with the Ashburton RSA. Various community groups and businesses sign up with the service and they recruit their own volunteers as they take responsibility for a roster with a set amount of weeks each year.

The clubs receive 51 cents per meal from the health service and this can be a handy fundraiser.

Rotary Club of Ashburton Meals on Wheels facilitator, Ivan Blain, said the club had been helping out for many years and the money raised was put into an account designated for charitable

purposes. “It’s one way of giving back to the town,” Blain said.

Co-ordinator of the service at Ashburton Health Services is Sara Grant.

She said the service was seeking new volunteers.

“We are always interested in hearing from community groups or businesses who are interested in volunteering,” Grant said.

This week is National Volunteer Week.

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon applauded Mid Cantabrians for being generous with their time and keeping the district’s many organisations running.

But for quite a few community groups it was getting harder to source personnel and he hoped the week would be a good opportunity for people to ask themselves what they could do to help.

Domain plan on path to become public property

A redevelopment plan for Ashburton’s domain will become public property later this month.

The plan saw some hot debate erupt around the Ashburton District Council meeting table last week when deputy mayor Neil Brown took exception to it being discussed during the public excluded section of the meeting.

He was backed up by councillors Leen Braam and Peter Reveley. While the reason for the debate to be held in committee was that there was some commercial sensitivity around some of the content, the three made it clear they had read the report and believed the reasons given did

not stack up. Councillors decided they needed to hold another workshop on the draft plan before it was discussed again – this time in an open meeting.

Since then councillors had met and considered the development plan, and had asked staff to carry out further work on their draft plan, chief executive Hamish Riach said.

“This work will be completed over the next few weeks and we will then bring the draft back to the service delivery committee meeting on July 25 for consideration in open meeting,” he said.

He anticipates the committee will consider the plan, amend it where necessary and that it would then go to council at open meet-

ing on August 15. If the council adopted the plan it would be put out for public consultation following that meeting.

Because staff were still working on the draft, Riach said he could not provide any information on its likely content, but gave an assurance that when it came back to the council it would be discussed in open meetings.

“After that we’ll then go through a full community consultation process and there will be ample opportunity for full community input.”

Riach said that councillors were very aware of the public’s interest in the future of what was a much loved and valuable asset for the district.

Wider support for bovis farmers

Federated Farmers is about to launch a special support group for Mid Canterbury farmers under surveillance for suspected mycoplasma bovis in their dairy or beef herds.

Farmers under active surveillance had no access to advice from MPI, but were in a stressful situation and needed information, Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers’ boss David Clark said.

Feds have formed a Farmer Assistance Group and it will be led by respected dairy farmer Jessie Chan-Dorman, of Pendarves.

Figures at June 19 show 80 Mid Canterbury farms under surveillance for the cattle disease.

Another 20 properties were under notice of direction (restricting stock movements) and five properties were still classified as

active or infected. Twenty farms have been cleared of the disease through the culling and disinfection programme.

M. bovis programme director Geoff Gwyn said MPI, Beef + Lamb and DairyNZ had asked Federated Farmers for help.

“Asking them for further support and engagement is to ensure that affected farmers are as supported as possible and that we’re all doing everything we can to make eradication a success.”

He said Ashburton was the most affected area and MPI was working with Feds and alongside the Ashburton Regional Advisory Group, chaired by Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel.

“Farmers under active surveillance are not under movement restrictions but often find it a difficult situation to manage. While they are able to continue farming

normally, including moving and trading stock, we know that many farmers find this difficult.”

Clark said farmers under active surveillance had no statutory controls about what they could do with their animals, though they had a moral obligation to reduce the risk of spreading the disease.

“There are also connotations on the property, rightly or wrongly. But under the rules of the response there is no welfare assistance, there is no advisory team available.”

He said farmers under surveillance were farming like they had the disease, until otherwise notified, and feeling a huge amount of stress.

“It is almost more stress than having a notice of direction. They have a vacuum of information.

Once you come under a notice

of direction or are an infected property, where is a whole lot of support that is wrapped around you by MPI and the rural support trust.”

He said Federated Farmers had realised there was a large group of farmers under surveillance who needed help.

“The positive is that there is a better-than-even chance that if you are under active surveillance you will move out of it. But there are so many what ifs.”

He said that under surveillance, there is a lot of forward and back-tracing of stock done, a lot of going through Nait records and testing of animals. There was interaction with MPI, but not about how the process worked, the legalities and the ramifications.

Young Farmers CEO Terry Copland and MPI director general Ray Smith.

Clark said Chan-Dorman would lead the Mid Canterbury Farmer Assistance Group with the help of other capable members. The group is being funded

by MPI and could be a template for other regions.

He said members would get alongside farmers in their business and give them an understanding of the process and advice. The group could also escalate concerns with MPI as needed.

He said there was no compensation for farmers under surveillance, though they were incurring costs about where stock could go for grazing or segregating mobs.

“We just need to get alongside them and make sure they are fully aware of the process.”

Station makeover complete

Station cat PJ might not be so keen on the new surroundings, but staff at the Ashburton St John Station are delighted to be back in their newly-renovated workplace.

After a nearly four-month absence, ambulance operations are once again based out of the station, which is a massive relief, says Ashburton executive officer Elaine Vallender.

“It is a huge relief, it has been a six-month process for us and a difficult three-and-a-half-month process for the ambulance staff,” she said.

A large number of improvements and changes have been made to the station and in that time ambulance operations have had to be based off-site out of a local motel.

“Shifting an ambulance operation is a huge job compared to shifting a house as we still have to be operating the whole time,” she said.

“Fortunately the station manager has a very good team and everything worked like clockwork.”

No early review for dog bylaw

“It is much more user friendly,” she said.

“We have lost space for two trucks inside so have had to build a huge carport outside to store those.”

Vallender said there were still

some kinks to work out, but that it was a credit to those working on the project that it was completed on schedule.

“The contractors here have been amazing to ensure it got done,” she said.

“They went above and beyond, they were here on weekends and nights to make sure it was fin-

ished on time.”

The only issue now was getting the station cat PJ to settle in to the new surroundings.

“The station cat doesn’t really like the new cat door,” Vallender said.

“She comes in and out and is being fed, but she isn’t quite keen on staying inside yet.”

Police urge public caution over scams New Zealand Police are urging people to make sure the elderly and others vulnerable to scams are aware of the risks.

“We know that scams are often targeted towards more vulnerable members of society who may not have the knowledge or information to protect themselves,” a police spokesperson said.

“Sadly this often involves older people, being Elder Abuse Awareness Week we wanted to share some advice that might prevent more people falling victim to scams.”

Earlier this month an older gentleman was scammed out of a significant amount of cash after

he received a call from someone claiming to be from a New Zealand telecommunications company. The victim was a customer with the company for internet, cell phone and landline and the call seemed genuine.

They even claimed they were working with Police, and put a detective on the line who said the man had to post a significant amount of cash in order to catch the offenders who were, allegedly, hacking the man’s computer.

Believing the call was genuine, he posted the cash. The man asked for a tracking number and quickly realised something wasn’t right so he called Police. The par-

cel was able to be tracked, put on hold and retrieved by Police.

Thankfully in this situation Police were able to assist with tracking down the man’s money but unfortunately this is not always the case.

Police advice is to always be vigilant and to never automatically trust someone over the phone or online who you haven’t met in person.

If you are receiving a call from someone purporting to be from a business, ask them for credentials and never hand over personal details such as computer passwords or bank account details.

Your personal details are very valuable to scammers, they will use your details to take out loans or run up debts if they can.

If something looks or sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If a victim believes they have been scammed and lost money, it is critical that they report this matter to their bank immediately.

Banks, Immigration New Zealand or Inland Revenue never email, call or text customers to ask for money to be sent using money transfer services. If you receive a request like that, it’s a scam.

Ashburton’s dog owners might not be happy, but the dog bylaw that determines where dogs can run free in Argyle Park will not be reviewed before its due date.

The Ashburton District Council is not due to review the bylaw until 2021.

While nothing has changed in the rules around dogs in Argyle Park, until the council erected signs that spelled out where dogs could run free, where they should be on a leash and where they were banned, many dog owners thought the entire park was a free run area.

Council chief executive Hamish Riach said that the bylaw review was in the council’s work programme for review in 2021 and there were no plans to bring this forward.

“In the absence of any public danger or significant change of circumstances, we don’t have the capacity to deal with a review here in such an ad hoc and unplanned way.

I can’t stress enough that we have changed nothing (except the signs),” he said.

Big Smoke v Rural Folk sell-out

The battle of the Big Smoke v Rural Folk is set to take place in front of a sell-out crowd this Saturday as the Big Smoke side attempts to retain its title.

The evening, which is held biennially, pits two teams of 10 Ashburton District residents against each other in a variety of challenges.

The Big Smoke team is made up of Ashburton “townies”, while the Rural Folk are, as the name suggests, from a rural background.

Event convenor Rex Whiting said tickets to the event were sold out and anybody that was hoping to get tickets would have to hope someone else would pull out.

“Anyone looking for tickets may be able to ring Sue Letham just in case there are cancellations,” he said.

The two teams of 10 are set and ready to go, ready to face the challenges, some of which they will not know until the night.

“There are six challenges throughout the course of the

The event will be compered

by Tinwald School principal Peter Livingstone, while local politicians Jo Luxton and Andrew Falloon will put their political differences aside for the evening to make up part of the all-impor-

tant judging team.

Profits from the night will be split three-ways between the Ashburton Lions Club, the Ashburton Rowing Club and Basketball Mid Canterbury.

Fifty items will also be auctioned off throughout the evening, including signed sports memorabilia, fishing trips and dining vouchers.

New boss for economic development

The Ashburton District is poised to enter a new phase of economic growth and investment.

Bevan Rickerby has been appointed as the Ashburton District Council’s economic development manager and his focus will be on helping current businesses to grow and on encouraging new enterprise and new investment.

Rickerby will focus on implementing the council’s economic development action plan by fostering productive economic relationships both in and outside the district, developing initiatives and proactively engaging with potential developers and investors.

In announcing the appoint-

ment, council chief executive Hamish Riach said Rickerby already had a good knowledge of the Ashburton District and he would hit the ground running.

“His energy, skill-set and vast experience will be a great fit with the council,” he said.

Rickerby is a current director of Experience Mid Canterbury (a position he will now relinquish) and also works for City Care in Timaru as key accounts manager for its relationship with the Timaru District Council in the three waters area.

Prior to this he was a business consultant, general manager for Plains Irrigation Ltd and business relationship manager for the Otago Polytechnic. He has held a variety of roles in transport and media companies, and

Since the dis-establishment

of Grow Mid Canterbury almost three years ago, the district has not had one single point of contact for people wanting assistance in growing their business or for people wanting to invest in the district.

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said an appointment to the economic development role had been a long time coming and it was a relief to now have someone in that role as work in that area had been in a holding pattern.

“It’s great we will have someone with this focus. We’ve been missing the experience and wisdom needed to grab the right opportunities and to evaluate them. There’s a depth of knowledge he’ll have to move the district forward,” she said.

In brief Winter bites Temperatures plummeted in the Ashburton District on Tuesday night with both Methven and Ashburton experiencing their coldest nights of the winter so far. In Methven the thermometer dropped to a chilly minus 3 degrees, with Ashburton just one degree warmer at minus 2 degrees. The district, however, escaped lightly compared to many parts of the South Island with Mackenzie District bearing the brunt of the chill with minus seven recorded at Pukaki. A low of minus 4.8 was recorded at Mount Cook Airport. In Marlborough it was -1, in Christchurch -3, and central Otago was between -3 and -4.

Port fined $500k Wellington’s CentrePort has been fined half a million dollars following the death of a worker who fell while undertaking repairs of a container. The incident happened in January 2017 at the company’s container assessment and repair facility. Teihi Whaanga used a ladder to access the roof of a 2.9m high container to do repairs. He fell and hit his head on the concrete below. The 60-yearold was taken to Wellington Hospital, put in an induced coma, and later died. CentrePort was sentenced at Wellington District Court yesterday and ordered to pay $693,426, which includes the fine, reparation to the family and other costs.

Boatie’s body found The body of Daniel McLellanSkeggs, who went missing after a horrific jet boat crash last month, has been found washed up on a West Coast beach yesterday morning. Police said the body was found by a fisherman on a beach at Kakapotahi, near the Waitaha River. McLellan-Skeggs has been missing since he was involved in a jet boat crash on the Taramakau River, northeast of Ross, on May 17.

A local helicopter crew rescued one of the men involved in the crash but McLellan-Skeggs could not be found. Police recovered the body and confirmed it to be that of the 29-year-old from Christchurch.

His family thanked all volunteers and members of the public that assisted with the extensive search after the incident.

Canterbury women unite

Six Canterbury women forever changed by the Christchurch terror attack on March 15 are planning an event aimed at forging new understanding and connections.

Christchurch-based freelance writer and author Jo Bailey said after donating money and flowers, and attending vigils, she felt more needed to be done.

She came up with the idea for Uniting Canterbury Women, to be held July 10 from 7pm to 9.30pm at the Centennial Chapel, St Andrew’s College.

“Its purpose is to continue opening of hearts and minds, and feelings of goodwill and connection which arose out of the tragic events,” Bailey said.

“I reached out to Zahra Hussaini, of the charity Who is Hussain, and within a couple of days, thanks to her connections, found myself around a table with five other women. We have all become really close and have spent the last couple of months organising the event,” Bailey said.

Among them was Rebecca Parnham, who lives in Christchurch but is originally from Mt Somers.

were out of the area she thought they were away from it all, but then went to their school’s second-hand clothing sale and found themselves caught up in the response and in lockdown in a classroom for three hours.

Parnham is co-founder of Krama & Co, a social enterprise which sources scarves from rural villages in Cambodia, thereby supporting education for girls and opportunities for women.

She is also a social worker who

two children, aged five and seven, were forever changed on March 15, as they processed the shock and struggled to go back into the city feeling safe.

The family was in the CBD on the day as they were involved in Strike for Climate, and as they finished the protest and walked towards their car she was told of a gunman nearby. She urged her children to run, telling them it was because she did not wish to get a parking ticket. Once they

The event’s MC is Ali Jones, and will include waiata, song, speakers, stories told by migrant women and opportunities for attendees to connect with one another.

Everyone will receive a gift bag, and an artwork is also to be unveiled, incorporating wrappers from flowers laid in Christchurch following the attack.

Crash killer of three avoids jail

The sister of a Rotorua Higgins worker killed in a crash at Matata was openly distraught after the man who admitted killing her brother and two others was not sent to jail.

Tauranga man David Michael Cox, 47, was sentenced in the Whakatane District Court yesterday after previously pleading guilty to three careless driving charges relating to the crash which killed Rotorua road workers Haki Hiha, David Eparaima and Dudley Soul Raroa.

Cox was ordered to pay $21,000 emotional harm reparation, complete 250 hours of community work and was disqualified from driving for 21 months.

Outside court, Raroa’s sister Lovey Tamata was distraught, questioning why Cox was not sent to jail.

“He will never see the inside a bloody jail... Why not? He killed three innocent people doing their everyday jobs,” she sobbed.

At sentencing, Judge Peter Rollo said the victim impact statements, which were not read in court, made it clear the three men were much loved by whanau.

Defence counsel Tony Balme said Cox committed an error of judgement that had terible consequences.

Police warn about winter conditions Winter conditions have set in this week and the police and NZ Transport Agency are urging drivers to drive to the conditions and not to take careless risks.

“Driving in winter is not the same as driving in summer; New Zealand seasons are distinct, especially in our alpine and rural areas,” national manager of road policing Superintendent Steve Greally said.

“Extreme weather conditions such as ice, snow, fog and wet weather can hit quickly, so people need to be prepared for the weather conditions and know how to handle the vehicle they are driving.”

The NZTA is also urging drivers to pre-plan for any travel over the winter period.

“Pre-planning is essential for safe travel and if drivers want to avoid delays caused by road restrictions, road closures, or vehicle breakdowns,” NZ Transport Agency director safety health and environment Greg Lazzaro said.

“Check traffic and travel updates before you leave, think about where you’re going and what route you should take – choose safety over convenience.

Always check the weather forecast and consider if you really need to travel, especially if the weather is poor,” Lazzaro said.

If the weather is bad and your travel can’t be put off, allow extra time for your journey. Plan to drive in the middle of the day or in daylight hours, when visibility is better and ice and snow are

less likely to be on the road. Avoid driving at night, when hazards rapidly multiply.

“When you’re on a wet, icy, or snowy road, it’s important not to brake suddenly or to accelerate quickly, as you could aquaplane or skid,” Greally said.

“In these situations, more than ever, driving to the conditions is crucial.

“People need to watch their following distances, make sure before they set out that their headlights and windscreen wipers are working, and check weather reports in alpine areas.”

As part of the winter driving focus, Police and the NZ Transport Agency will be doing safety checks of commercial and passenger service vehicles, and their

drivers on roads around New Zealand’s skifields. Skiers at Mt Hutt can expect to be stopped.

“People can also expect to see a strong police presence around New Zealand’s popular routes commonly used for transit to and from the skifields, including our impairment prevention team,” Greally said.

“We’re out there because we want everybody to get where they’re going, and home, safely.

Over the winter months we’ll be reminding people to take care and be aware of the hazards of winter driving, like black ice.

“Most things can be handled on the road if you drive at a safe and sensible speed and give yourself time and space between cars to react.”

San Fran to ban vaping AP San Francisco supervisors have moved a step closer to becoming the first city in the US to ban all sales of electronic cigarettes to crack down on youth vaping.

Supervisors unanimously approved a ban on the sale and distribution of e-cigarettes. They also endorsed a ban on manufacturing of e-cigarettes on city property.

The measures will require a subsequent vote before becoming law.

“We spent the ‘90s battling big tobacco, and now we see its new form in e-cigarettes,” Supervisor Shamann Walton said.

The supervisors acknowledged that the legislation would not entirely prevent youth vaping, but they hoped it would be a start.

“This is about thinking about the next generation of users and thinking about protecting the overall health and sending a message to the rest of the state and the country: Follow our lead,” Supervisor Ahsha Safaí said.

City Attorney Dennis Herrera said young people “have almost indiscriminate access to a product that shouldn’t even be on the market”. Because the Food and Drug Administration has not yet completed a study to assess the public health consequences of e-cigarettes and approved or rejected them, he said, “it’s unfortunately falling to states and localities to step into the breach”.

Most experts agree that e-cigarettes are less harmful than the paper-and-tobacco variety because they do not produce all the cancer-causing by-products found in cigarette smoke. But researchers say they are only beginning to understand the risks of e-cigarettes, which they think may damage the lungs and blood vessels.

Since 2014, e-cigarettes have been the most commonly used tobacco product among young people in the country. Last year, 1 in 5 US high school students reported vaping in the previous month, according to a government survey .

FDA spokesman Michael Felberbaum said in a statement that the agency will continue to fight e-cigarette use, including preventing youth access to the products, acting against manufacturers and retailers who illegally market or sell the products to minors and educating young people about health risks.

The company said in a statement that it has made its online age-verification process more robust and shut down its Instagram and Facebook accounts to try to discourage vaping by those under 21.

“But the prohibition of vapor products for all adults in San Francisco will not effectively address underage use and will leave cigarettes on shelves as the only choice for adult smokers, even though they kill 40,000 Californians every year,” Juul spokesman Ted Kwong said.

This week’s vote also sets the stage for a November ballot fight over e-cigarettes.

Juul has already contributed $500,000 to the Coalition for Reasonable Vaping Regulation, which is set to gather signatures to put an initiative on the issue before voters.

The American Vaping Association opposed San Francisco’s proposal as well, saying adult smokers deserve access to less hazardous alternatives.

“Going after youth is a step that you can take before taking these out of the hands of adults,” said the association’s president,

Groups representing small businesses also opposed the measures, which they said could force stores to close.

“We need to enforce the rules that we have in place already,” said Carlos Solórzano, CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of San Francisco.

Walton said he would establish a working group to support small businesses and address their concerns.

Although San Francisco’s ban is unlike any other in the country, the Public Health Law Center at Mitchell Hamline School of Law reports that all but two states have at least one law restricting youth access to e-cigarettes. City voters last year approved a ban on sales of candy and fruit-flavoured tobacco products.

Stanton Glantz, a professor of medicine at the University of California San Francisco Center for Tobacco Control and Research and a supporter of the measures, said e-cigarettes are associated with heart attacks, strokes and lung disease.

The presence of e-cigarettes, he said, has “completely reversed the progress we’ve made in youth smoking in the last few years”

New hip for 107yo woman

Daphne Keith has become the oldest Australian to have a partial hip replacement under general anaesthesia at the age of 107.

After fracturing her hip during a fall, Keith was admitted to Wollongong Hospital where she underwent the emergency operation in January.

One hour later, she was awake, alert and drinking a cup of tea with four sugars, her surgeon says.

Four days after the hip hemiarthroplasty – which involved replacing the ball of the hip joint with an artificial ball and metal stem – Keith left the hospital and now she uses a walking frame to get around.

The 108-year-old, who recently celebrated her birthday, is believed to be one of the 15 oldest living Australians.

She has become an example of how age is not always a predictor of a patient’s readiness for surgery.

The anaesthetists involved in her treatment have co-authored a case study of the successful procedure and presented it at the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists’ (ANZCA) annual scientific meeting in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

“Both surgical and non-surgical options were considered, but without the operation more than likely she would have been bed bound for the remainder of her life,” said Dr Anthony Hodsdon, a senior resident medical officer at Wollongong Hospital.

Her nephew Mick Chapman says his aunt, who was a keen ballroom dancer into her 90s, has been forced to slow down a bit but still gets around. “It’s amazing to be in her company,” the 86-year-old said.

An Australian cricketer who raped a woman he found “dozing” in his teammate’s bedroom has been jailed for five years by an English court.

Alex Hepburn, 23, was convicted after an attack he carried out during the first night of a sexual conquest “game” he helped to set up on a WhatsApp group.

The former Worcestershire county all-rounder was said by the prosecution to have been “fired up” by the contest to sleep with the most women, before carrying out the rape at his flat in Portland Street, Worcester, in April 2017.

Jailing Hepburn, Hereford Judge Jim Tindal told the “immature” cricketer he and a former teammate had agreed a “pathetic sexist game to collect as many sexual encounters as possible”.

Murder Mystery a hit Netflix has revealed their new Jennifer Aniston/Adam Sandler comedy Murder Mystery now has the biggest opening weekend ever for a Netflix film. The streaming service — which very rarely shares viewership data — revealed on Twitter that nearly 31 million accounts watched Murder Mystery in its first three days. Of those numbers, 13 million were US and Canadian accounts, while 17 million were international. According to Netflix, those numbers mark a record for an original film on the streaming service.

NBA final a winner The two top winter sports crowned their champions as summer neared, separated by exactly 10 million viewers. The sixth game of the NBA Finals, where the Toronto Raptors dethroned the depleted Golden State Warriors, was seen by 18.76 million viewers in the US, according to Nielsen. The final two games buoyed ABC, which had been suffering in the ratings with the series between a Canadian opponent and a team competing in its fifth consecutive finals.

The seventh game of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals, won by the St. Louis Blues over the Boston Bruins, was seen by 8.76 million viewers, Nielsen said.

Domain reno headed in right direction A

shburton District Council boss Hamish Riach is correct in his comment that the Ashburton Domain is a much loved and valuable asset to this community and it’s pleasing to hear that there will be no more behind-closed-doors discussion about its future.

But the question does still remain, why the move for secrecy?

We’re told it’s due to the commercially sensitive nature of some of the subjects that needed to be discussed – but what really defines something being commercially sensitive, it’s a pretty broad ranging reasoning.

Openness and transparency are vital aspects to any council, especially so in the case of ratepayer money and big decisions

that are going to impact on a large portion of the community is almost every decision made in the council chamber.

So there’s really no need for things to go behind closed doors.

Elected members and key staff in the operation charged with running this district would gain a lot more respect by coming out and stating from the outset what might potentially become a

bone of contention, as opposed to keeping it hushed for months before dropping it into the public forum and watching things explode.

The Ashburton rumour mill is already in overdrive on what might potentially sit inside this development plan and the potential ramifications of some of those potential outcomes.

Nothing is certain until you see it in writing with the official documentation at the top of the piece of paper, but usually where there’s smoke, there’s a pretty fierce burning fire.

A lot of the time it won’t matter what process is taken, but something as big and as well used and noticed as the Ashburton Domain space is of true public impor-

tance.

Almost everyone in this district will have at some point spent time there, whether it be wandering the gardens and enjoying the serenity of the paths and views, watching or playing on one of the many sporting fields or facilities it boasts or enjoying entertainment that is often staged within its boundaries.

So it’s vitally important that the community is involved from the very outset – and it was extremely pleasing from a community view to see the initial decision to hold discussions away from the public was argued against last week.

Rightly so, at least in our opinion, Deputy Mayor, Neil Brown along with Leen Braam and Peter Reveley objected to the

idea of taking those discussions away from a publicly accessible forum and though met with some resistance, had a small win for the public by at least standing up and seeing that it was the wrong step to take.

There is a bit of water to go under the bridge in the coming weeks and months in regards to our domain and what lies ahead for it in the future.

Now the community can look forward to that process with the openness and transparency that it deserves and be ensured that they are going to have ample opportunity to have their say on a subject that is very dear to so many hearts around the district.

And that’s how it should be from start to finish.

YOUR VIEW How many things can Ashburton MP Andrew Falloon get wrong in a short series of statements? Pretty much everything.

He says the business case for the second urban bridge funded by the Provincial Growth Fund will not lead to a bridge but will fall into a business case black hole because, he believes, other business cases funded by the PGF have not led to the implementation of projects.

He also claims that other infrastructure projects around the country have been funded by the PGF without a business case.

As an MP and a former staff member of the previous government, he should know that a business case is a requirement before funding from the National Land Transport Fund can be approved.

He should also know the $9m roading project he referred to in Northland had a completed business case before it was funded.

He should also know roading projects worth more than $100m funded by the PGF were also preceded by business cases.

I explained all this to Mr Falloon at a Select Committee in Parliament last week when he raised the matter.

In the funding of a business case, the Provincial Growth Fund has supported the people of Ashburton in their aspirations for a second urban bridge. It is a pity Mr Falloon and the government he worked for did not do the same when they were in power.

PO Box 77 Rangitata MP, Andrew Falloon replies: I can understand why Mr Jones might be a bit sensitive about his performance at Select Committee last week.

During his appearance I asked him why he’d recommended Stan Semenoff for a position on the board of the New Zealand Transport Agency.

Mr Semenoff has referred to Filipino truck drivers as “bloody mongrels” and threatened to take $5000 off them if they looked for another job.

His response? “I don’t care what he says.”

Unfortunately that appears to be clouding his judgement in suggesting I’ve got it wrong.

Try as he might, he’s not able to deny that 41 of the 55 transport projects announced so far have been for project funding.

The other 14, including the second bridge over the Ashburton River, have been for business cases only. Not one of those 14 has proceeded to project funding.

There have been four studies looking at the location and need for a second bridge over the Ashburton River. My question to him at Select Committee was to ask why there needed to be yet another study, rather than just funding the project.

Mr Jones appeared oblivious to the fact that there’d been four previous studies.

Today I have provided Mr Jones details of those studies. I’ve also sent him his previous announcements which highlight the differences between project funding and business case funding.

Perhaps in future he’ll take care to read those before he comments.

Dairy product prices declined at the Global Dairy Trade auction, retreating for a third straight time, led by whole milk powder.

The GDT price index dropped 3.8 per cent from the previous auction two weeks ago. The average price was $US3208 a tonne, compared with $US3423 a tonne two weeks ago. Some 24,239 tonnes of product was sold, up from 19,874 tonnes two weeks ago.

Whole milk powder slid 4.3 per cent to $US3006 a tonne.

“This is the sixth consecutive decrease in the whole milk powder price index, with price levels decreasing significantly across all contracts,” NZX dairy analyst Robert Gibson said in a note.

“At the latest GDT auction, butter dropped 5.7 per cent to $US4553 a tonne, while cheddar shed 4.3 per cent to $US3781 a tonne.

Skim milk powder fell 3.5 per cent to $US2358 a tonne. Skim milk powder “prices decreased across all contract dates, with the strongest decreases being for July contracts, down 5.0 per cent,” according to Gibson.

Luxton welcomes debt mediation The Government’s new debt mediation scheme underlines a commitment to supporting farmers and minimising vulnerability, particularly when in financial distress, says Jo Luxton, Labour Party List MP based in Rangitata.

The Farm Debt Mediation Bill (No.2) approved by Cabinet and announced on Monday, is a proposed law change. It will require secured creditors who lend money to farmers to offer mediation to farmers if they default on payments, before taking enforcement action.

Luxton said the bill highlighted the importance of farming to both communities and economy.

“Farmers are particularly vulnerable to business downturns as a result of conditions outside of their control, and this new scheme aims to put greater balance, process and fairness back into a situation where a farmer may find themselves in a difficult position with their bank.

“Farming is more than just a business for many in our electorate, and the failure of a farm business can lead to the farmer and their family losing out on their farm and home.

“For many rural communities, this means that the failure of one farm can often have a ripple effect through those communities and the regional economy.

Through this scheme, we’re supporting and valuing the mental, emotional and

The Farm Debt Mediation Bill is supported by Federated Farmers and the New Zealand Bankers Association.

Big boost for hemp farming Mid Canterbury farmers growing hemp will have their crop harvested by new technology which allows the stalks and seed to be separated at harvest.

The technology has been developed by Hemp NZ, Carrfields and NZ Yarn and paves the way for the whole plant to be used, not just the seed.

The innovations involve engineering adaptations to combine harvester front attachments. The adaptations allow the seed and grain to be removed at harvest, with the stalks left on the ground separately for baling – essentially two harvests in one, known as dual cropping.

Carrfields group managing director Craig Carr, who is also chairman of NZ Yarn’s parent company Carrfields Primary Wool (CP Wool), says dual cropping is a huge breakthrough for New Zealand’s fledgling commercial hemp industry.

“Until now, the only part of the hemp crop that has been harvested is the seed, however, there are multiple parts of the hemp plant that can be used, with the stalk being of particular interest as a source of fibre.”

Dual cropping allowed farmers to maximise the return from their crops, through making more of the plant available for use and minimising crop wastage, he said.

“We’re still fine-tuning our dual cropping equipment and processes but we’ve seen very pleasing results from our trials this year. It’s very exciting to think that next summer and autumn, we’ll be geared up for commercial hemp harvesting and production to begin on a significant scale.”

Following Hemp NZ’s acquisition of a 15 per cent interest in NZ Yarn in late 2018, Hemp NZ is now in the process of installing a state-of-the-art hemp fibre processing facility in a 3000m2 space at the NZ Yarn factory in Burnside, Christchurch.

This will transform the NZ Yarn building from a wool carpet yarn spinning plant into a modern fibre factory with equipment purpose-built and engineered for hemp, rather than using modified

Dave Jordan, chief executive of Hemp NZ, said the new facility, the first of its kind in New Zealand, will produce a very high quality fibre using efficient processing techniques. This will open the door to the development of market-leading innovations in hemp fibre processing.

“There are many, many potential consumer and industrial uses for hemp fibre. We’re extremely excited about working with NZ Yarn to explore and develop some of these possibilities,” he said.

Once the machinery for the new processing line, which is being imported from Europe, is

fully commissioned and ready to operate later this year, NZ Yarn and Hemp NZ will begin what is thought to be the first-ever commercial processing of hemp stalk into fibre in Australasia.

Processing is expected to begin towards the end of this year at the new facility, using hemp stalks from the 2019 harvest.

By the 2020 harvest, between 1500 and 2000 hectares of hemp crop is expected to be harvested and processed through the facility.

Hemp fibre has exciting potential as an environmentally-friendly alternative across a huge range of industries globally, Jordan said.

$42m tax bill that won’t be paid back

Nearly a million Kiwis have paid too much tax on their investments including KiwiSaver – money that won’t be paid back.

The Inland Revenue has updated figures and found 950,000 people were on a prescribed investor rate that was too high in the last tax year.

The average amount overpaid is $44, amounting to a potential $41.8 million in overpayment.

The current legislation does not allow for refund of overpayment.

It has also found that 550,000 people underpaid tax on their investments, including KiwiSaver, with an average of $80 to $90 per person.

That means around $45m to $50m will need to be paid to the tax department.

The figures have blown out from the original estimate in which the IRD said around 450,000 people were on the wrong tax rate.

Up until now it has been up to individuals to make sure they are on the right rate.

Most KiwiSaver providers send out annual reminders to get people to check their rate but say the response rate is often very low.

Thompson said in the future it would contact customers during the year if they were found to be on the wrong rate.

“This will be an ongoing process to ensure that customers get things right from the start.”

The IRD said from mid-July it would begin contacting those on the wrong rate to let them know they need to change it.

“They can then contact their investment provider to change their rate.”

The IRD changed to a new system in April which allows it to group together all the income people received, including wages, salary and investments, which now allows it to see if people are on the right rate relative to their income level.

“In the past our old system did not do this automatically and we relied on people and their investment providers to make sure they were on the right rate.”

The IRD would not be going back past the last tax year to recover unpaid tax, it said.

Thompson said trying to go back over past years and determine incorrect payments based on wrong PIRs would have required significant work not just for Inland Revenue but for individual taxpayers and financial institutions.

The departure of Chevron and Equinor from New Zealand’s exploration scene is a huge lost opportunity and shows how quickly the risks from the Government’s exploration ban are coming to pass, energy analyst John Kidd says.

Chevron is a global-scale player.

It was exploring for resources to supply low-emission gas to meet rising energy demand in Asia – much of it currently met by coal – as it does from its LNG facilities in Australia, he said.

“A company the scale of Chevron wasn’t here to make a small discovery. They were here looking for something to supply the export market,” Kidd said.

Development of such an export LNG play in New Zealand “would have made a meaningful contribution to regional emission reductions and air quality”, he said. “But that’s a logical trail that this Government is just not interested in.”

The Labour-led Government last year shocked the industry when it banned new offshore exploration citing the need to signal a longterm transition from fossil fuels. It claimed the 100,000 square-kilometres of exploration acreage already issued – a quarter of which was held by Chevron and Equinor – would be sufficient to ensure security of energy supplies.

But the decision, taken against officials’ advice, was challenged by many, given the International Energy Agency is forecasting a 2045 per cent increase in demand for gas by 2040, in-part to replace higher-emitting coal and oil from global electricity and petrochemical production.

The New Zealand Institute of Economic Research estimated the

ban would reduce the country’s GDP by $15-$38 billion during the next 30 years, raise prices and reduce investment.

Chevron and Equinor, the former Statoil business, on Tuesday said they would not be proceeding with the next five-year stage of work in the three permits they jointly hold off the North Island’s east coast.

They emphasised their decision was based solely on the outcome of work to date, relative to other opportunities they have elsewhere, and was not a response to the change in Government policy.

Chevron said it believed resources in the Pegasus-East Coast basin could be safely developed in future – something that can’t happen under the permitting ban.

“That’s now never going to be seen,” said Kidd, director of independent energy research house Enerlytica.

“This is a sector that is really hollowing out.”

Greenpeace yesterday tried to claim credit for the departure of Chevron and Equinor and pledged to keep up the pressure on OMV,

which operates the offshore Maui and Pohokura gas fields. The Vienna-based company is planning a further round of exploration off Taranaki this summer and may also drill its first well in the Great South Basin.

“The exit of Chevron and Equinor is a case of two down, one to go,” Greenpeace senior campaigner Steve Abel said in a statement.

“OMV, can expect resistance.

There is no place for oil and gas exploration in a climate emergency.”

Gas meets about 21 per cent of the country’s energy needs and has about half the emissions of coal. It produced about 12 per cent of the country’s electricity last year and is a critical back-up fuel for the country’s renewable power supplies during dry years.

Overall, oil and gas contributes about $2.5 billion to annual GDP, according to the Petroleum Exploration and Production Association.

Kidd said the sector – and the broader extractives industry – is operating under an “umbrella of uncertainty” and the wider community should be more concerned.

Garlic and pepper chicken stir-fry 1 Waitoa chicken breast 1/4 C garlic cloves, smashed 3/4 t palm sugar 3/4 t white or black pepper powder 1 3/4 t fish sauce 1-2T Olivado extra virgin avocado oil (enough to coat bottom of pan) 2-3 T water 1t coriander leaves (for garnish) ■■ Rinse and cut the chicken into bite sized pieces. Smash the garlic lightly with the side of a knife.

Club news 14 Ashburton Guardian Ashburton Combined Friendship Club President Alister called for a minute’s silence to mark the passing of Heather Holdaway.

Tony is planning a trip to the Geraldine area in August. This is likely to be a full day trip with a meal stop. There were 29 on the recent very successful town and about trip.

Mini Speaker Andrew Brown suffers from the well-known farmers’ ailment, Iron Disease, the strain afflicting Andrew is Old Iron Disease. Sometimes bank managers can treat Iron Disease, but Old Iron Disease is incurable.

Andrew told us several anecdotes from a trip he made with fellow machinery enthusiasts to the Waikato where they saw several impressive machinery collections.

Our main speaker was well known Ashburton identity and retired retailer Tony Todd.

The Todd story started with Tony’s grandfather, A H Todd, who, after learning the drapery trade in Dunedin and Gore, came to Ashburton in 1914. A few years later he formed a company to buy the established drapery business he was working in.

In 1938 a new store was built which still houses the business albeit after several building facelifts. After returning from the Second World War all four of A H Todd’s sons entered the business.

As a young man A H Todd studied business extensively using correspondence courses. Later he was involved in many community activities including the Borough Council, the Hospital Board, the Licensing Trust and the Savage Club.

Tony started at the store when he was 16 and later as a young man worked at Kirkaldie and Stains to gain department store experience.

The retail scene has changed massively since Tony started with all the retail businesses that were on the same block as Todd’s disappearing and the big box retailers coming into town.

Tony has had several community interests outside the business including Jaycees, Rotary, the Licensing Trust and the ALT Charitable Foundation and Hospice Mid Canterbury.

Tony also told us about his frustrating efforts to get the Information Centre open again, which the council closed despite a lot of public support for it to remain open.

Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboard Karen Balderstone played us in on the upright. What a lovely selection.

Not a bad turnout for our AGM. It turned out that those who couldn’t make it missed a very entertaining evening. John got down to business, and had the generals over in under 15 minutes.

Our club has such a powerhouse of willing members, to take over the running of it, that John’s job was made that much easier.

John goes in again as our able president, and wife Barbara, will take Rose’s place as secretary. John acknowledged the work Rose has done over her time in the club.

Two new members on committee, Colin Crone, and Margaret Drummond.

Margaret (Twamley that is) was responsible for arranging the entertainment for the evening, and she did a marvellous job.

Bernard gave us a selection on the Kawai organ including Easter parade in memory of a past member sorely missed by the club, Robyn Barriball who we lost 13 years ago to the day.

The keyboard group then rattled out a few songs they had put together. Two were French can can polka and Chopin gone mad.

Then Gavin Templeton and Brian Taylor gave us two separate brackets of hilarity.

The first bracket consisted of mimes performed to various snatches of film and movie themes by Gavin and his hairy chested old girl. The stripper Coro St Wipeout the Titanic were just a few.

The second bracket saw John and Janet with a mike each, giving out the appropriate sounds to the antics of the two guys.

Ashburton Golf Club Young Vince Carr is loving his new handicap, and is making hay before he gets snipped. A wonderful net 65 on Saturday with a triple bogey on the last, saw him to top seeding in the Presidents Trophy, he will now face George Brown who scraped in as 16th seed by the skin of his teeth, and now has to try and plot Vince’s down fall. Good luck.

Other games in the round of 16 are, Ron C will take on Tuffy, Allan locks horns with Barry, Royce and Braydon will have a great battle. Kenny and Paddy will be a one horse race, Lefty and Stu will have a ding-dong as will Robbie and Chris, and then Arkright will do a bit of giant killing on Pauly G. We will have results and quarter final predictions next week.

Sunday we have pennants rounds with a big day for the Patterson boys, it’s the last round and both teams sit top of their respective leagues and could well meet in a blockbuster semi.

Tom’s boys have a bye so they have to sit and watch and hope they don’t get jumped by 2 teams, and hold on to at least 2nd place.

Captain Blythe’s team are top but are playing 3rd place Point at their own course, but the result is in their own hands a win will see them top the table.

We are still having some selection issues with this team with rumblings of mutiny again in the air.

The jolly boys were well behaved at Waimari Beach last Friday, but maybe not in the pubs on the way home.

Pat T was player of the day, but unfortunately was unable to front up for Saturday golf, must have been something he ate.

Waimari Beach is a beautiful course friendly people and free to Ashburton members, go and give it a try.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club We have had good turnouts for our club days, anywhere between 20 and 30 plus.

The friendly club doubles competition we hold on a Tuesday is proving popular and winners so far have been: Dawn Bruce and Rewa Kyle, Betty King and Trevor Nish, and Jonothon Crum and Betty Nish.

We held our Club Mixed Doubles on May 5 and this was won by Karen Bensdorp and Richard Browne, Runners up were Ellen Pithie and Peter Marriott.

This year we trialled an under 70’s competition and this was won by Karen Bensdorp and Shelagh Field.

We also trialled an over 70’s and this was won by Rosemary McLaughlin and Mick Little.

We had 6 players take part in the Queen’s Birthday tournament and this was won by Jonothon Crum and his Papanui partner.

They were the only team to win all their games.

Last Sunday we played our Club Drawn doubles and this was won by Betty King and Richard Browne, and Runners up were Neville Bensdorp and Henry Marriott.

At the end of the month we will be hosting a social day with the Woolston Club.

It is a quieter time at present for our competitive players, but when July arrives that is going to change.

Margaret, Jane and Jillaine are all registered piano teachers, where they meet and perform regularly in the area.

Mid Canterbury Central Friendship Club Cold weather and illness saw numbers down to 69 for our June meeting, however, this was bolstered by eight visitors who were welcomed by President Russell Small. In addition one new member was inducted into the club.

Our mini speaker was Graeme Monro, whose talk covered his later life after finishing a 21 year career in the NZ Air Force.

His first civilian job was with Guardian Alarms where he was service manager installing fire and emergency alarm systems. After the 1986 downturn Graeme worked in various jobs involving electrical engineering before shifting to Waiheke Island and later the Bay of Islands where he and his wife retired.

In the wake of the Christchurch earthquakes they moved south to Christchurch to live with family before eventually retiring to Ashburton.

After tea break Barry Quantock introduced our main speaker, Hamish Riach, CEO of the Ashburton District Council.

Hamish came to this role recently after 17 years as manager of the Crusaders. He gave us an oversight of where the council are heading and some of the difficulties they face.

Although surveys show a high level of public satisfaction with the council, staff at times feel under siege and under-appreciated.

He emphasised that most are hardworking and committed to serving for the good of our community.

Projects such as the new Library and Admin building, a 2nd road bridge, removal of the Information Centre and renewal of the CBD were all well explained.

He rounded this off with an informative question time. Merve Green thanked our speaker and the meeting closed.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club President Avis Kingsland welcomed members and visitors to the June meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club held recently.

After the National Anthem was sung birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated.

A new member, Theresa Heffernan was inducted into the club and we were all reminded that we have Fellowship, Friendship and Fun. The almoner Ann McKay gave her report and we were advised of the Christmas Lunch. The raffles were drawn.

Members then spoke of the visit to the Riverstone Castle near Oamaru, built by Dot Smith.

It’s been a lifetime in the making, years in its construction, but Dot’s fantasy castle is nearly ready. There are four storeys and a dungeon. Dot is 70 years of age, has worked hard all her life.

The entrance has armour, helmets, spears and a marble floor. Dot went to China for many of the furnishings.

There is even a moat. They dug the gravel out of a flat paddock, sold it to a local Oamaru shingle supply firm who turned it into concrete blocks which were then used to build the castle’s main walls.

It was then surrounded by the distinctive white Oamaru stone.

Internal beams were crafted from old macrocarpa trees from their property.

After morning tea Owen Moore took us tripping around Australia in a campervan.

Owen has travelled 90,000kms, firstly in hired van but then purchased his own truck, putting a pop-up top on it. He told of people trying to bring ghost towns back to life.

A place of particular interest is Coober Pedy where the houses are built underground.

Owen had walked twice up Uluru, it is a

steep walking track. Fly hats are always a good idea. Punctures sometimes happen.

When travelling on sand it is advisable to let air out of the tyres of the camper van.

He showed members pictures of termite nests, road trains, donkeys, snakes and huge spiders. There is even an Ashburton River.

He had also travelled from Alice Springs to Birdsville. Dingos were seen on the side of the road. Not to mention the last dunny for 240km. There is an Owen Springs Reserve. He saw trains with 100 wagons and lots of camels. Owen was thanked for his presentation.

The new committee was presented to members. President Avis closed the meeting with the thought for the month – “Life is too short to be serious all the time.”

MSA Outdoor Bowling Club At our recently held Annual General Meeting we saw a change in the committee personnel to administer our club for the 2019/20 season.

Linton Muir takes over as club president from Tony Inwood who takes over the financial side of the club replacing long serving treasurer Joan Hardy who retired after serving the club for the last 20 years, a great effort thanks Joan enjoy your retirement.

Darcy Lysaght steps into the secretary position, with Neil Stuthridge filling the vice-president chair and David Muir will continue as club captain.

Committee members for the year John Moffatt, Bruce Watson, Gary Brown, Charlie Cleghorn, John Argyle.

Subscriptions were set at $100.00 a full member $50.00 social member. $50.00 a limited member allows play in club only events non championship.

Totara Trophy was presented to Charlie and Joyce Cleghorn awarded for their efforts within the club over the year.

Winter bowls are now being played in the club rooms on Racecourse Road on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons commencing at 1.30pm for anyone interested in trying the sport.

We will be hosting Richmond Club playing for the William Jolly Rosebowl Saturday July 20, with a rematch at their venue Sunday August 25.

Biz. Bowls will be played over the winter months in the club rooms on a Thursday evening to cater for working people commencing July 4.

Netherby Women’s Institute The June meeting of the Netherby W.I. started with a Pot Luck finger food lunch which was enjoyed by everyone.

As our president was unwell Adrienne Hodson, vice-[resident chaired the meeting and welcomed the 20 members present. She also showed us an article in the Guardian of Doris Wakelin (nearly 102) with the Topp Twins at their Cafe in Methven.

Barbara Burst read the Motto for the month “Talcum powder might catch a man but baking powder will keep him”.

Golden Threads heard Valmai Mitchell read a piece called “I’m only mature”.

The Roll Call “Who would you like to invite to afternoon tea”? proved popular and interesting. In fact some of us had to change our person as someone else had chosen them.

Those chosen were Family, Friends, Neighbours, Doris Wakelin, Jacinda Ardern, Richie McCaw, Scott Robertson, Tim Shadbolt, Brad Pitt, Roger Federer, Ben Fogle, George Clooney and of course The Queen, Prince Harry and Catherine Middleton and last but not least Agatha Christie if she was still alive.

Happy Birthday was sung to two members.

Competitions results were read out and the Moylan Trophy was won by Nancy Christey and the Northchurch to Barbara Burst. The seven loaves that were entered were donated to Cancer.

Raffle was won by Nellie Burrows.

Federation News Main points from the AGM In Taupo were read out and the Edna Way Trophy – for over 80s was won with a beautifully constructed box for a birthday by our own Joan Campbell.

The next Federation event will be a Quizco on June 28 We are having a luncheon at the Hotel Ashburton on June 20 to celebrate the

seven members that have or will be turning 80 this year.

Our speaker was one of our members Sharon Kelly who invited us to take part in either creating a Hand Dish from Air dry clay or “The art of conversation” by reading questions from cards and responding to them. Both were enjoyed by all that took part.

Our next meeting on July 9 will be Soup, savouries and sandwiches and after our meeting we will play Housie.

Afternoon tea completed the meeting.

Run and Walk Ashburton The lactate threshold runs throughout the week have proved popular with the group consistently improving. This coming week their distance will increase to 7km with the eventual goal of 9km set.

Various race goals are being worked towards and with the hard work all are putting in this certainly seems achievable.

Wednesday evening five walkers across the early and later session headed out on their usual town route. Despite the low numbers, those who were there enjoyed the camraderie and getting out on a chilly evening together to keep their fitness levels up.

Mild conditions on Saturday morning were enjoyed by the seven runners who met and made their way down the South River track.

Everyone settled in to a comfortable pace, with the two men opting to continue on to Lake Hood for some extra mileage, while the others turned and made their way back to town clocking up approximately 10km.

By the afternoon the weather was overcast with a tiny touch of drizzle, however this didn’t deter the 12 walkers and one runner who travelled to Rakaia for the 1.30pm Club walk/run.

Hosted this week by Keith and Dale Rutherford who chose to take members up the Rakaia River track.

All agreed the views across the river made a lovely change from the town streets, with various routes taken on the return. Next week club members have the opportunity to compete in the South Canterbury Cross Country event in Timaru – good luck.

The Lions Club of Ashburton Changeover Night 2019 The Lions Club of Ashburton held its annual changeover night on Wednesday June 5 at the Hotel Ashburton.

The outgoing President Lance Schubert, was acknowledged and thanked for his commitment to the position and his successful running of our Club.

Incoming president long serving Lion Roger Paterson was inducted as the club’s new president and wished all the best for a successful term of office.

Awards were presented to: Garth Bateup – Melvin Jones Award/Fellowship for his outstanding contribution to Lions over a long period of time.

The late Gus Johnson was awarded the Morgan Award/Honours Board for his outstanding contribution to Lions.

Peter Gibson received the Lloyd Morgan Life Membership Award for his long contribution to Lions and the community.

Manny Sim – the Ed von Tunzelmann Award for outstanding service to Lions and the community.

All recipients were warmly acknowledged.

Entertainment for the evening was provided by the Ashburton College Phoenix Rising Choir conducted by Angie Cresswell on the eve of their participation in the Big Sing for secondary schools at the Christchurch Town Hall. A cheque was presented to the Choir from the Club in support of the College and Choir.

After dinner Ron Cresswell entertained the gathering with a broad selection of well received songs. His talents and time given were duly acknowledged and appreciated.

The evening was deemed a great success

by Lions and their respective partners.

IAAF: Semenya ‘biologically male’ NZME The governing body of track argued in court that Olympic champion Caster Semenya is “biologically male” and that is the reason she should reduce her natural testosterone to be allowed to compete in female competitions, according to documents released publicly for the first time yesterday and which provide new insight into a bitter legal battle.

The documents released by sport’s highest court show that Semenya responded by telling the judges that being described as biologically male “hurts more than I can put in words”. The 28-yearold South African runner said she was unable to express how insulted she felt at the IAAF “telling me that I am not a woman”.

The IAAF’s stance on Semenya and other female athletes affected by its new testosterone regulations – and Semenya’s outrage at the biological male claim – was revealed in a 163-page decision published by the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport.

It details parts of the courtroom exchanges that were held behind closed doors when Semenya challenged the IAAF over the highly

CAS had previously released only short excerpts of the final verdict when it was announced last month.

CAS by a 2-1 majority of the panel of judges, allowing it to implement the testosterone limits.

But in the latest legal twist, Semenya appealed the CAS verdict to Switzerland’s supreme court on human rights grounds. She won an interim ruling to temporarily suspend the hormone regulations and the Swiss supreme court will hear her full appeal.

The rules only apply to certain races, from 400m to one mile, but they include Semenya’s specialist two-lap event.

To be allowed to compete under the rules, Semenya and other affected athletes must medically reduce their testosterone to below a specific threshold set by the IAAF. The IAAF gives three options to do that: A daily contraceptive pill, a monthly hormone-blocking injection, or surgery.

The medical process has been criticised as unethical by experts and Semenya has refused to take medication to alter what she calls her genetic gifts. At least two other runners, Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi and Margaret Wambui of Kenya, who are both Olympic medallists, say they are also affected by the rules. They have also railed against the regulations and criticised the IAAF.

Semenya, who has been fighting the IAAF ever since she was embroiled in a gender verification test at the world championships 10 years ago, says the rules should be discarded and she should be allowed to run in her natural form. She disputes that she has a significant performance advantage.

Girl banned from tournament #CWC19 NZME Disapproving principals are refusing to bend the rules of a Hawke’s Bay rugby tournament to let an 11-year-old girl play to win, as nationwide backlash against the decision grows.

Briar Hales, a Year 7 Havelock North Intermediate student, pulled out of her team after the disapproval of five opposition school principals who were against her playing with the boys.

Hales, the only girl in her school’s 1st XV rugby team, was told that if she competes in an upcoming tournament her team will not be awarded any points.

But as fury at that stance resonated as far as the halls of the Beehive yesterday, organisers dug their heels in.

The six schools run a sports competition called Super Six throughout the year where the schools compete for a shield at each of the sports.

Heretaunga Intermediate School principal Michael Sisam said the Super Six was intended to promote maximum participation. “Girls play sevens, boys play fifteens,” Sisam said.

“The current structures state that girls play in girls’ tournaments and boys play in the boys’ tournaments.”

Taradale Intermediate principal Rex Wilson said the “structure” was there for a reason and would not be changed when the competition was already under way.

“It is a gender-based structure to enable maximum participation especially from girls.”

Canada bound for world U21s

If Hugh and George Donaldson can make a final when they take to the water at the world under-21 water skiing champs in Canada, that will be a win in their books.

The 19-year-old Ashburton twins boarded a plane this week bound for Florida where they’ll get back on the water and acclimatise to the warmer conditions before heading north to Edmonton in Canada for their latest tilt at a world title.

They know that they’ll be up against it, because when it comes to world water skiing New Zealand is a small fish in a big pond, and to make a final they’ll need to be top 12 after their single qualifying runs in slalom, tricks and jump.

New Zealand’s team for the world under-21s consists of four young men, and for one of them to podium would be a massive feat. New Zealand has only once before claimed a medal at the worlds, but interestingly, it came at the same site in Canada where this year’s under-21 worlds are being held.

It would be nice to continue their country’s good run in Canada, but realistically, it would take something super special to do it against the best skiers from the other 21 countries taking part. So Hugh and George are both focused more on beating their personal bests, and helping New Zealand to a top 10 finish in terms of team scores.

Mum and dad Janeen and Neil will be there, taking in the action on the ski lane, as they have been for almost every tournament Hugh and George, and their older siblings Rachel, Lana and Karl before them, have been in.

They’re a family with a rich water skiing history and the twins have been the top two in their age group in New Zealand since they were under-9s.

They’ve never had a shortage of incentive, because there’s always been a brother, a sister or a dad to beat, and that’s helped to make them the skiers they are today.

Being twins, there’s always been a friendly rivalry between them, and there’s never been

much separating them. At the moment there’s just one buoy between them in slalom, 10cm between them in the jump and both have similar tricks runs.

Both Hugh and George rate jump as their favourite, and their best of the three events, and both have their sights on distances in excess of 50 metres in Canada.

The current world under-21 record for jump is 66.9 metres.

They know that anything can happen on the day though.

“There’s a small gap between a good jump and a bad one,” Hugh said. At the nationals at Easter, Hugh finished second in the overall men’s section, while George was fourth, and with the worlds in mind they were still on the water at Lake Crichton until Queen’s Birthday weekend.

Since then they’ve been to Australia for four days of fullon coaching, and during the stop-off in Florida on the way to Canada they’ll refine their skills

with the help of a top Kiwi who is now a successful coach in the US, Kyle Ede. When they return to New Zealand it will be back to polytech in Christchurch, where Hugh is studying architecture technology and George is studying quantity surveying, and back to the gym to ensure they’re at their best for their next big challenge – the open worlds in Malaysia in August.

The world under-21s in Canada is the first and last time the

Donaldson twins will compete at that level. The under-21s are held every two years and they were selected for the event in the Ukraine two years ago, but did not end up making the trip, and now – at 19 – this is the last year they’ll be eligible.

Hugh was a reserve for the New Zealand team for the world opens last time, but ended up being called in, while for George the trip to Malaysia in August will be his first open worlds.

Relegation looming closer

With just two games to go in the second round of the Mid Canterbury Netball premier one competition, two unlikely teams are currently in the biggest danger of relegation.

There’s two teams without a win to their names so far in round two, and that’s Hampstead A and last year’s runners-up Methven A, two teams that – depending on how tonight plays out – could next week find themselves facing off in a fight to stay out of the promotion/relegation game which awaits premier one’s bottom team, and premier two’s top team at the end of round two.

Both are in desperate need of more points on the board. Methven A are currently at the bottom of the table with just a single bonus point to their name from their first three round two games, while Hampstead A are just one spot above them with two bonus points to their name.

If Hampstead A can beat Mt Somers tonight it will give them a bit of breathing space. A Hampstead A win will see them leapfrog Mt Somers into fourth spot with one match to go in round two, and put the pressure instead on Mt Somers.

Mt Somers have won two games so far this season, beating the now relegated Celtic B in round one, while their sole win of round two so far came against Methven A a couple of weeks ago.

Methven A tonight face the team that took Celtic B’s place in premier one after round one thanks to finishing as the top side in premier two, United A. United A haven’t looked back since claiming that automatic promotion spot that awaited premier two’s top side at the end of round one, picking up three wins from three outings since their much anticipated return to premier one.

Straight away, they set about rebuilding with the aim of getting back to premier one, which they did at the earliest possible opportunity, and with two games to go in round two they’re already assured of their spot in premier one for the season-ending third round.

United A and defending champions Celtic A currently top the table with 12 points, and both are the only premier sides unbeaten

so far this season.

That record will end for one of them next week though – barring a draw – with Celtic A and United A set to square off in the last game of round two.

Celtic A’s unbeaten record came close to being ended earlier this season against College A, with the game finishing in a draw after Celtic A came from behind to land a couple of late goals and break the young college players’ hearts.

Tonight, they get a chance at finishing off what they started

though, with the two sides set to play each other again tonight.

No matter who comes out on top, recent form suggests it will be a cracker of a game, with College A having bounced back from an average couple of weeks with a strong performance last week, and Celtic A having been in top form despite missing a few key players in recent weeks.

That game will be first on the court at the EA Networks Centre tonight in the 6.30pm round, along with the game between

Hampstead A and Mt Somers, with Methven A and United A to follow at 7.30pm.

In premier two action tonight, Southern A will be looking to continue their strong form with a spot in the promotion/relegation match within reach, when they play Methven B. Celtic B will take on Ashburton College B, while the other match will pit club-mate against clubmate, with Hampstead B set to play the newly promoted Hampstead C.

Manu Vatuvei ‘still in denial’ after discovering brain cyst

By Christopher Reive Life after league has been a tough road for Manu Vatuvei.

During his time with the Warriors he was a cult hero; affectionately known as ‘the Beast’, Vatuvei cemented his place as one of the club’s greatest players after more than a decade in the jersey.

But when he was released by the club to take up a deal with Salford in the English Super League in 2017, Vatuvei’s career suffered a sharp decline when injuries saw his career in England cut short.

Returning to New Zealand after just eight games with Salford, Vatuvei tells the Herald he actively tried to avoid the sport.

“It’s always been tough, I never watched a game when I came back from England, I never watched a game, and I never went to a game

or anything.

“I was missing it and getting itchy feet all the time.”

Looking to fill the void the game left in his life, Vatuvei returned to the workforce before looking to launch a career as a professional boxer.

With a number of bouts lined up, a medical screening before his debut against David ‘Brown Buttabean’ Letele found something that would put an abrupt halt to his career in the sport.

“I’ve got a cyst in my brain,” he revealed to the Herald, “so that’s been tough”. “[There were] no symptoms, no nothing … They found it then and tried to rule me out of the fight but I went on with it and came out good.”

Vatuvei won his debut by knocking Letele out in the first round of

the fight, but the other bouts he had lined up were cancelled because of the discovery.

The 33-year-old says he was told the cyst had likely been there for some time, including while he was still playing rugby league.

“Right now, I can’t do any boxing. But with footy, they said because I must’ve had it a long time ago, I must have been all good playing. So I’m still deciding from there.

“Hopefully, I hear back from that soon and decide what my future holds.”

With boxing ruled out, Vatuvei finally found a new passion to fill the void left by league in an unlikely form – ballroom dancing.

The offer to participate in the most recent season of Dancing with the Stars opened a new avenue to express himself and exert

himself physically. It was something totally new, and he quickly embraced it – going on to win the competition.

“It was a tough challenge for myself and I’ve enjoyed it,” he says.

“I got told I can’t do boxing anymore. It’s been tough, but then dancing came along and made it feel a little better so I’ll just continue with that and see what the future holds for me.”

Dancing has been a cathartic experience for Vatuvei, and he’s been able to open himself up to rugby league again. This week he was working with the Mate Ma’a Tonga team as they prepared for their test against the Kiwis at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday. Vatuvei played two tests for Tonga in 2017, adding to his 29 tests for the Kiwis between 2004 and 2017.

“I had to get over it somehow,” he says of his return to the environment. “This was a good opportunity for myself to come in and get amongst the boys again and get that feeling again. It’s hard, but I’m just enjoying it at the moment.”

His health, however, is his first and foremost priority. While he says dancing has helped with his ailed knees and Achilles, he’s not taking the cyst in his brain lightly.

“I haven’t really announced my retirement or anything because I’m still in denial that I can still play. That’s something I’m still trying to heal from.

“I’ve still got some medical things that I’ve got to look at. Right now my mind and my heart’s telling me I can still play but my body’s saying no so it’s a constant battle at the moment.”

Dunn makes his name in US Dexter Dunn was hoping to enjoy a little success on the Grand Circuit this year, but the young stakes season has already exceeded his expectations. Dunn, who captured 10 consecutive premiership driving titles in New Zealand before moving to the US last summer, has won Grand Circuit finals with three different horses and finished second in six other events.

Last weekend, the 29-yearold Dunn won the Fan Hanover Stakes for three-year-old female pacers with Treacherous Reign for trainer Tony Alagna. In May, he won the Art Rooney Pace for 3-year-old male pacers with Bettor’s Wish for trainer Chris Ryder and the Confederation Cup for four-year-old male pacers with Done Well for Ron Burke.

His runner-up finishes include the North America Cup with Bettor’s Wish, the Blue Chip Matchmaker with Bettor Joy N, the Dexter Cup with HL Revadon, and Maxie Lee Invitational with Pinkman.

“It’s well above what I expected coming over here,” Dunn said.

“It’s a dream come true, really. I can’t say how much I appreciate all the help I’ve received that’s gotten me to the stage I’m at now.

“When I first came over here, Chris and Nifty Norman and a lot of other trainers helped me out a lot. They put me up when they could have chosen much more established drivers over here. “(Driver) Andy McCarthy has helped me a lot. He’s gotten me in with some trainers and when he went home for the winter, I did a little bit of work for his clients.

“I’m lucky, really lucky.”

Dunn ranks No. 3 in earnings, with $3.51 million, among all drivers in North America. He is second in the driver standings at The Meadowlands and third at Harrah’s Philadelphia. On Saturday, he will have six drives in Grand Circuit eliminations at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono, including with Treach-

Dexter Dunn is making a name for himself in the United States. erous Reign in the third of three elims for the James M. Lynch Memorial for three-year-old filly pacers.

“She’s a big strong filly and she’s got a great attitude,” Dunn said about Treacherous Reign, who is unbeaten in four starts this season. “She wants to race.”

Treacherous Reign won the Fan Hanover by a nose over Warrawee Ubeaut, who was last year’s Dan Patch Award winner for two-year-old filly pacers and also unbeaten this season heading into the race.

“I was confident, but Warrawee Ubeaut had been so good, and she proved not only this year but last year that she’s an outstanding filly,” Dunn said. “As much confidence as I had, there was a bit of an unknown.

“It was a battle in the stretch.

I stayed (behind Warrawee Ubeaut) for a little bit to try to

keep the momentum going at the top of the stretch and come out a little later. My filly probably just wore her down more than anything. It was a tough performance and she really dug in, my girl. It was great.”

Treacherous Reign is the 3-1 second choice on the morning line in her elimination. Warrawee Ubeaut is the 5-2 favorite. The top-three finishers in each of the three Lynch elims return for the $300,000 final on June 29.

Dunn also has drives in the two remaining Lynch divisions, with Philly Hanover in the first and Odds On St Lucie in the second. Philly Hanover, who has won four of five races this year, is the 2-1 favorite in her elim while Odds On St Lucie, who won her only start of the season, is the 5-2 second choice behind 2-1 Zero Tolerance.

Coyne Jr., suffered her only setback to Warrawee Ubeaut.

“She’s really nice too,” Dunn said. “I think she’s still untapped.

She’s just winding up. There are some nice fillies out there.”

Dunn’s remaining drives in Grand Circuit eliminations Saturday are Odds On Boca Raton in the first of three elims for the Max C. Hempt Memorial (threeyear-old male pacers), Rockin Ron in the first of two elims for the Ben Franklin (open pace) and Goes Down Smooth in the second of two elims for the Earl Beal Jr. Memorial (three-year-old male trotters).

“I sort of had in my mind that if I picked up one stakes horse, maybe a nice three-year-old, I would be happy,” Dunn said, reflecting on his outlook during the winter. “Honestly, that’s what I thought. It’s just picked up. I’ve been lucky.”

Promising Waikato apprentice Taiki Yanagida will return to raceday riding at Counties today after being on the sidelines for a couple of months after a trackwork incident.

“I got injured when riding track work,” he said. “The horse shifted towards the fence and my ankle went against the fence and just snapped.”

It has been a relatively quick recovery for Yanagida, who suffered the injury in mid-April, and he said he is feeling back to normal after completing his rehabilitation.

“I had a cast on for four weeks. I have just had acupuncture, physio and I have been biking for quite a while.

“I am basically finished with the physio now, I don’t go very often. I’m going to the gym to try and improve my fitness.

“My foot has gotten a lot better and I started riding track work last Tuesday.”

Prior to his injury in April, the 25-year-old had posted 36 wins and was eyeing a tilt at the apprentice jockeys’ premiership.

However, those aspirations were dashed after his injury.

“I was happy with the way I was going. I wasn’t really thinking about that (setting a goal for number of wins at the start of the season),” he said.

“In the summer, people started to support me quite a lot and I was given some good opportunities.

“At the start of this year I was aiming to win the apprentice premiership, but this injury put a stop to that.

“It will definitely be a goal for next season (to win the apprentice premiership).”

The England captain’s 148 from 71 balls against Afghanistan yesterday contained 17 sixes and launched the home team to 397-6, the sixth-highest total at a Cricket World Cup and the biggest so far of this tournament.

Moeen Ali ensured a team record for a one-day international, too. He cleared the boundary four times in an unbeaten, nineball 31 to improve England’s own mark by a world record 25 sixes.

The group game between the highestand lowest-ranked teams was barely a contest, with Afghanistan finishing 247-8 to slump to its fifth consecutive defeat.

England moved to the top of the standings on eight points, ahead of defending champion Australia on net run-rate. There was also a positive outcome for Afghanistan, with the total surpassing its 232 against Sri Lanka in Dunedin four years ago as its highest at a World Cup. Hashmattullah Shahidi was felled after ducking into a short ball from Mark Wood that hit his helmet in the 30th over, but he recovered to score 76 and share a national World Cup record partnership of 94 with Asghar Afghan (44). Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid each took three wickets for England.

Morgan went to the crease in the 30th over at 164-2 and raised the total to 359 before his explosive innings ended when he was caught on the boundary in the 47th over.

A doubtful starter at Old Trafford because of back spasms in England’s previous game, Morgan was barely an over into his innings when he got an inside edge to Afghanistan skipper Gulbadin Naib and shaped to run for a single. He dropped his bat in a collision with Gulbadin as he turned to get back to safety.

Morgan’s discomfort was fleeting, though, as he belted Gulbadin’s next legiti-

mate delivery for six over deep mid-wicket.

Just for good measure, he followed up by clearing the rope at long-on.

It really set the tone. The 32-year-old left-hander raised his half-century from 36 balls and reached his 13th ODI century from 57, the fourth-fastest hundred ever at a World Cup. Morgan beat Chris Gayle’s ODI mark of 16 sixes – for the West Indies against Zimbabwe in the 2015 World Cup – when he flat-batted Gulbadin straight back down the ground.

There was a pause while the TV umpire checked the distance before umpire Paul Reiffel raised both arms to signal Morgan’s record 17th.

He tried to go one better on the next ball but was caught in the deep, giving Gulbadin a third wicket and eventual figures of 3-68 from 10 overs – Afghanistan’s best return of the game.

Morgan dominated a 189-run third-wicket partnership with Joe Root, who was 45 when his skipper arrived at the crease and was eventually out for 88 from 82 deliveries.

Fielding errors cost Afghanistan dearly, none more than the dropped catch when Morgan was on 28. He pulled a Rashid Khan ball out to deep midwicket, where Dawlat Zadran got one hand to the ball before letting it trickle to the boundary.

Morgan hit two more sixes in the over, and just kept swinging.

He took 22 off one over against Rashid and generally dismantled Afghanistan’s best bowler, who conceded the worst ever figures in a World Cup game of 9-0-110-0.

Morgan drove two sixes into the upper deck of the broadcasting box straight down the ground, and one clattered so heavily into the stand that the leather ball had to be replaced.

England’s confidence is high with four wins and a loss going into Friday’s game at Sri Lanka at Leeds.

Winless Afghanistan is unlikely to get any reprieve, with No. 2-ranked India up next on Saturday.

Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre is growing its expanding family of sports by adding table tennis to the mix.

The stadium will host a twohour table tennis have-a-go session on June 30 where people will be able to try their hand at the sport, as those behind the running of the stadium look to create more sporting opportunities for the people of Ashburton.

Ashburton District Council service delivery group manager Neil McCann said they had 12 table

tennis tables and all of the gear ready to go.

“It’s about giving anyone who wants to participate in table tennis a chance to give it a go,” McCann said.

The arrival of table tennis at the EA Networks Centre comes hot on the heels of pickleball, a sport many hadn’t even heard of until a few weeks ago, and it has proven to be a winner.

Huge numbers turning out to the weekly Sunday pickleball sessions means they’ve already had to buy more equipment, and they now have eight pickleball courts

up and running every Sunday night from 5pm until 7pm. They are also looking at adding a 3pm to 5pm Sunday pickleball session.

Four years into its life, the EA Networks Centre is a busy place, with netball, basketball, futsal, badminton, volleyball, and now pickleball and table tennis, among the sports on its weekly calendar.

But, there is space for more.

Sundays were often a quiet day at the stadium before, but the addition of new sports like pickleball, and now table tennis, were changing that.

On the day table tennis officially

makes its debut at the stadium – June 30 – it will be followed by both pickleball and a spot of futsal.

A collaboration between the EA Networks Centre and Mainland Football, the futsal will be a havea-go session for kids from 3pm until 5pm, followed by an adults’ futsal competition from 5pm until 7pm.

McCann said it was all about finding ways for the community to get involved in recreation.

Table tennis is new to the EA Networks Centre, but it isn’t new to Ashburton. It is played at both Ashburton College, and weekly at

the Ashburton Club and MSA, but with part of the MSA building set to be demolished and rebuilt later in the year, MSA table tennis players are on the look out for a new home.

McCann said they’d been communicating with the MSA and the club will be involved in the havea-go day.

It is a day about gauging interest and working out whether there is a place for a regular table tennis competition or session at the EA Networks Centre, and if there is, they’ll get a permanent day and time booked in.
