Referee abuse in rugby has come under the spotlight for the second time this season in Mid Canterbury after a player was banned for 38 weeks following an incident in a local match.

An Allenton Senior B player was handed down the penalty last week after he was found guilty of dissent for a tirade at a match official in his side’s match against Methven.

And in the eyes of Mid Canterbury Rugby Football Union boss, Ian Patterson, that’s two incidents

too many this season.

“It’s disappointing that for the second time this season we are having to address a situation like this,” he said yesterday.

The latest case follows on from one earlier this season in which a Methven senior rugby player

was banned for eight weeks after he abused a referee in a Country Combined Rugby match between his side and a Kaiapoi side.

In both instances the abuse has been of an obscene nature and hasn’t just been a one-off comment. While deeply concerned at

the growing trend within the region, Patterson said Mid Canterbury was not on its own with the issue.

Mid Canterbury motorists whose car registration has expired will get an increased warning period before being stung with a $200 infringement notice.

The Ashburton District Council is changing the way infringements for expired regos are handled, making the process clearer and more accommodating.

Under the changes to come into effect June 26, drivers observed parking in the Ashburton CBD with an expired rego of less than 28 days will be issued a warning, while those expired

more than 28 days will be issued an infringement notice. Previously the warning period was just nine days.

An expired rego will also trigger a check of the WOF details, and if this is within the calendar month of the expiry date, a warning will be issued, while those outside the calendar month will be issued an infringement notice.

Currently, there is no warning procedure for expired regos, and WOFs are not inspected. The new warning system will involve a special ticket being placed under a vehicles windshield wipers, similar to how infringement no-

tices are applied. Environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle said the changes would effectively allow an increase of 19 days grace for expired registrations to be renewed if they were less than 28 days expired.

The new courtesy warning system would potentially save motorists from $400 of fines, as police pulling over a vehicle with expired warrant and rego could fine $200 for each.

“This new warning system will potentially help them avoid those possible fines,” Catchpowle said.

“These changes reflect a move

to standardise the infringement procedure and bring them into line with many other territorial authorities’ approach in keeping unsafe vehicles off the road,” Catchpowle said.

A review of health and safety procedures for parking officers helped prompt the move, as these would allow officers to inspect vehicle WOFs. “This duty was previously revoked, as it was unsafe for officers to step onto the road and into oncoming traffic to check WOFs, but now they will simply stand in front of the vehicle and inspect the WOF from there.”

“We see examples of it on the television every time we watch the All Blacks play, some players, particularly our halfbacks, are quite intent on chirping away in a referee’s ear throughout the match.

“Then some of our younger players go out onto the paddock on a Saturday and are witness to some quite confrontational comments from the other side of the side line from supporters.

“That particular influence, I feel, is quite damaging.”

The 38-week suspension handed down to the Allenton player is quite significant in terms of a penalty and is one of the more significant bans handed down in the region for many years.

It almost mirrors a suspension handed down to Waihora’s Bronson Munro by the Canterbury Rugby Union at the end of last season after he was accused of racially abusing former Mid Canterbury Heartland player, Peni Manumanuniliwa.

Munro was given a 46week suspension from which he returned to rugby recently.

He pleaded not guilty to the incident.

Mt Hutt skifield anticipating a big dump of snow Mt Hutt Ski Area management are expecting at least 20 to 30 centimetres of snow from a weather system set to move across the country on Thursday and Friday.

It’s Good in the Hood thanks to welcome donations

Representatives from seven local groups were on hand to collect their cheques from Z Energy as part of the ‘Good in the Hood’ campaign yesterday.

Through generosity and the choice of people’s votes, seven local charitable groups have received a financial boost.

As part of Z Energy’s Good in the Hood campaign, $4000 is given away from each site to four local groups.

The amount of money the groups receive is based on public voting throughout the month of May. Z Ashburton site leader Jimmy Tweedle said the scheme is a great way to get the word out about local groups, and to provide more than just a financial benefit

to the groups.

“It is a very good programme. It is good to raise awareness for smaller, local groups and not just big central ones where the money goes back in to one big pot,” he said.

“It allows locals to make connections throughout the year as well.”

The local groups that received donations this year were Age Concern, Defenders of the Children, Victim Support Mid Canterbury, the Ashburton Toy Library, Cancer Society Mid Canterbury, Look Good Feel Better, and Westpac Rescue Helicopter Canterbury.

Big Smoke takes out title Big Smoke vs Rural Folk on Saturday night was a sell-out success, with about 280 people having a blast and an estimated $24,000 being raised.

Two teams of 10, one aligned with townies and the other with country folk, went head to head in a series of stage challenges such as lip syncing and stage challenges with titles such as Dancing with the Stars and Blowing in the Wind, the latter organisers very

own version of the America’s Cup. The event was won by the Ray White Big Smoke team by a single point.

Co-ordinator Rex Whiting said it was thanks to sponsorship, auctions and prizes donated by local town and rural businesses that the money was raised, and it would go to St John Ashburton, Lions Club of Ashburton Charitable Trust and the Rural Support Trust.

Man faces murder charge over Richmond’s death

Wakanui Beach being restored Wakanui School pupils are learning about biodiversity at their local beach and helping to preserve it at the same time.

Yesterday students visited Wakanui Beach and marked out sections in transects and undertook botanical and insect surveys.

Later in the day they visited

the Ashburton Domain nursery, where native seeds they collected earlier have been growing.

The seedlings will eventually be planted out at the beach as part of the Wakanui Beach Restoration Project.

The Ashburton District Biodiversity Working Group is under-

taking the project in order to restore the biodiversity of the area, supported by the Ashburton District Council’s open spaces team.

Residents, farmers, Forest and Bird and Wakanui School representatives are undertaking pest control and plantings, and installing signage and walking

tracks, among other work included in the recommendations of a landscape study.

Open spaces planner Bert Hofmans said Wakanui Beach was considered ecologically significant, with rare plants and insects, and the group wanted to build on these values.

A man has been charged with the murder of Kim Richmond, whose body was found last week in a Waikato lake.

The 42-year-old mother of three went missing 11 months ago, with extensive searches of the area – including Lake Arapuni – producing few leads.

But last Thursday police divers returned to the lake, where they found a ute submerged with a person’s remains inside. A post-mortem confirmed it was Richmond’s body.

“This afternoon Waikato Police arrested a 45-year-old Waikato man and charged him with murder in relation to the death of Kim Louise Richmond of Arohena,” police said in a statement yesterday.

The man is due to appear in court in Hamilton today.

“Police advised Kim’s family of the arrest earlier yesterday.

“Police and the family would like to thank the public and media for their assistance during the investigation into Kim’s disappearance.”

Richmond was reportedly last seen driving a silver Ford Ranger ute away from the family’s remote Arohena farm in the early hours of July 31, 2016.

She is to be farewelled at a funeral at 1pm today at Te Awamutu.

Richmond’s mother declined to comment yesterday but after the vehicle was found last week she said the full impact had not hit the family yet.

“We’re pushing the emotions back. We’ve had 11 months to deal with this.

“It’s not going to show until we actually get Kim back and find that life will never ever be the same.

And that’s the hard part.

“Life goes on and we have to live without Kim and for us that’s really, really hard.”

In brief Joyride cut short A Sunday night joyride in a Bobcat came to an abrupt halt for some would-be vandals after the vehicle they were in ran out of petrol.

The Bobcat, which was located at the Ashburton Racecourse, was taken from its home and used to force down a large gate outside Morrison’s Saddlery before the vehicle ran out of fuel. The gates were damaged in the incident but the Bobcat was located exactly where it stopped just off Racecourse Road.

More than 100 Ashburton seniors received some top tips last week on getting the most out of their retirement years.

An ageing well forum, hosted by the Commission for Financial Capability, took an entertaining look at life after work, but it came with some serious messages.

Speakers covered a range of topics including how to make your money last as long as you do, how to avoid being scammed and how to recognise and deal with elder abuse.

Age Concern Canterbury chief executive Simon Templeton delivered some hard hitting messages around the prevalence of elder abuse in Canterbury. It was one of the most under reported crimes, he said, largely because it most often involved family members.

“It’s something that occurs in a relationship of trust and our statistics show that 77 per cent of cases involve a family member,” he said.

The reasons behind the abuse were many but it most often occurred through carer stress, relationship dynamics around power and control, social isolation or ageist attitudes.

“The same way children are vulnerable a lot of older people are vulnerable too,” Templeton said.

In many societies an older person was revered and cherished but that was not always the case in many western societies, including New Zealand, he said.

“We colour our hair, get rid of wrinkles and those are all messages that lead to a society that says it doesn’t value its older people.”

Psychological and financial abuse were the two most common issues Age Concern dealt with, but often there were multi-

A common situation was where an older person might give a family member their eftpos card and pin number to buy groceries and that person might use the card for other purchases.

This could be avoided by obtaining a second card with a second pin and a withdrawal limit that another person could use, he said.

“Quite often it starts with little amounts, but that’s theft.”

Abuse could also come around housing with family forcing an older person to remain in their home rather than going into care because they wanted to protect the home as their inheritance.

Since data had been collected in 1998 there had been more than 2000 cases of elder abuse

reported each year nationally.

“Our best estimate is this is just the tip of the iceberg; potentially there are around 17,000 cases a year in New Zealand.”

Awareness and talking about the issue of elder abuse was the first step in helping victims to seek help, Templeton said.

“If we do nothing, we’re condoning the behaviour.”

Financial commission education advisor David Boyle delivered sage financial advice.

Rather than living on investment interest and saving money to leave to their children, retirees were better to spend their money and enjoy a comfortable retirement, he said.

“It’s not just about living on

the interest, start using the capital yourself. We want to see New Zealanders enjoying their money rather than passing it on. You shouldn’t feel guilty about this.”

Retirees also needed to make good decisions around housing and rather than staying in a large family home, they were better to move into a small home and release some cash, Boyle said.

“Our advice is you need to start thinking about this before you have to make the change – plan ahead. We’re living longer so we have to plan for different stages in retirement.”

Home equity release schemes were also given the thumbs up – providing sound advice was sought.

“We look at this as a genuine option,” he said.

The role of the black rubbish bag might be changing in the Ashburton District, but it won’t be disappearing entirely from the rubbish disposal scene. On September 1 the Ashburton District Council will introduce a wheelie bin kerbside collection service. This will see residents able to roll out only their two wheelie bins along with the current green crate for glass recycling, but not their black bags. Those bags will only be able to be used to off-load rubbish at the resource recovery park in a designated free-of-charge area.

Gangs clash in Rotorua A Rotorua man has described horrifying scenes of gang members fighting – including cars ramming each other, attempts to run a man down and a man smashing a car with a baseball bat.

And a Mongrel Mob member at the scene has claimed there is more gang activity in Rotorua than there has even been and yesterday’s incident was “only the beginning”. The fighting unfolded about 1.30pm in front of stunned onlookers. A witness, who was just metres from where it happened, said people couldn’t believe what they were seeing. The witness said it looked gang-related because he could see gang colours.

Van ploughs into crowd A vehicle struck pedestrians near a mosque in north London yesterday morning, causing several casualties, police said.

One person has been arrested. The London Ambulance Service says the injured are being taken to hospitals.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing police give emergency medical treatment to at least one of the injured.

The Muslim Council tweeted that worshippers were struck by a van as they were leaving prayers near the Finsbury Park mosque. It said its prayers are with the victims.

The neighbourhood has two mosques, and several hundred worshippers would have been in the area after attending prayers as part of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The Finsbury Park mosque was associated with extremist ideology for several years after the 9/11 attacks in the United States but was shut down and reorganised. It has not been associated with radical views for more than a decade.

London police have declared the crash a major incident and closed the area to normal traffic. A helicopter circled above the area as a large cordon was established to keep motorists

Gunmen attack resort, killing two Jihadis attacked a hotel resort in Mali’s capital, taking hostages at a spot popular with foreigners on the weekends.

More than 30 people managed to escape though at least two people were killed, authorities said.

Moussa Ag Infahi, director of the national police, said three of the assailants had been killed while a fourth escaped.

Gunfire first rang out at the Campement Kangaba on the outskirts of Bamako in the late afternoon, according to a security guard who was work-

ing at the time. Mahamadou Doumbia said a militant on a motorcycle entered the area around 3.40pm and cried “Allah Akbar” before jumping off and running toward the pool area.

“Then a car with three jihadis entered the resort and they started to fire their weapons,” he said. “A French soldier who had come for the weekend but had his gun shot and wounded a jihadi.”

Mali’s security minister later issued a statement confirming at least two deaths, one of

which was a dual French-Gabonese citizen. As night fell, witnesses saw smoke rising from the Campement Kangaba, which features three swimming pools and is a popular escape from the Malian heat.

It was not immediately clear what was burning, although extremists in other attacks have set cars ablaze.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which took place amid the final week of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Hit horror not coming here It’s the horror hit scaring the hell out of American film audiences. But Kiwi cinema-goers currently can’t see it. That’s because It Comes At Night, a film one reviewer described as “so dark it calls for the invention of a new colour”, doesn’t have a New Zealand release date. A similar thing happened to break out hit Get Out earlier this year, with fan demand and a huge overseas response eventually seeing the film screened in theatres. It Comes at Night isn’t listed on websites for Events Cinemas or Hoyts, and on film buff site Flicks.co.nz, it’s listed as “undated” and “coming soon on demand, DVD/blu-ray”.

Match officials deserve respect, not abuse Matt Markham

A

nother week, another story of abuse of an official in the world of sport.

It’s a sad reflection on our society that we are subjected to people, whether they be players or supporters standing on the side-lines, who believe it is okay to hurl abuse at any form of official, let alone someone who has given up their time voluntarily.

And rugby seems to be our biggest problem. Not just here in Mid Canterbury though, it’s a nation-wide problem.

Borne through pure passion for the national game, the fine line between enthusiasm and destructive behaviour is being crossed more and more.

There seems to be a sense of entitlement when it comes to rugby.

A case of we know best and we aren’t afraid to show it.

But it’s no longer just restrained to hurling some abuse at the television from the safety of the couch.

It’s translated onto the paddock with comments being thrown at our referees, mirroring what is common parlance at home.

And to see another Mid Canterbury rugby player being banned for abuse of an official is more than disappointing and you can more than understand Mid Canterbury Rugby chief executive Ian Patterson’s dismay about having to answer questions about yet another incident.

But how do we stop it?

You can’t control emotions.

They flow far too free for that.

Perhaps we could make a start by setting a better example to our youth by taking a look at how we react to something within our own realms.

That could be at home, watching the All Blacks on the couch or standing on the side of the sporting field on a Saturday afternoon.

If we can show respect to those who are taking time out of their own lives to give their services to the community, then hopefully it will encourage others to do so as well and all of a sudden this issue that is becoming a real serious one for New Zealand may find itself nipped in the bud.

Argue your case inside the Feds’ fold A

s my time has come to end as dairy chairperson for Federated Farmers this could be my last column, so I thought it fitting to discuss what value comes from the Feds, and why those farmers who are not members should be.

Among the most frustrating things I’ve witnessed in my Federated Farmers’ roles are the reasons why some people resign and others refuse to join. For some it’s that they don’t see the value in that they don’t employ staff, so they think ‘well I don’t need the contracts or the 0800, so I don’t need to belong’.

The employment services we offer, while valuable, should really only be viewed as a side benefit. The real benefit – and the major reason you should belong – is for the advocacy and the policy work.

What your membership pays for is putting a farmer in the room where decisions are made, and backing him or her up with a policy team that helps identify and thoroughly research the key issues.

Thus the farmer or policy team member fronting all manner of authorities or forums can talk of the impacts on farm, and potentially the ways to achieve the outcomes people are after in a way that has the least negative impact, or preferably a positive

impact, on agriculture.

When people say that they don’t use our services, I would ask do they pay rates? Do they live in New Zealand and thus are subject to NZ regulations, local and national? If the answer is yes, and of course it is, then you use our services.

The Feds invest thousands of man hours fighting bureaucracy, misguided regulation and unfair cost impositions.

Some might think that because we haven’t been in the news jumping up and down about a particular issue, we aren’t doing that much.

Well, I would argue the more successful we are the less you will hear from us on the defensive in the media. Because greatest success comes when that farmer in the room has explained things well, decision makers get it and thus daft ideas don’t end up in legislation or council plans.

Of course there are plenty of times when loopy stuff still makes it into legislation and local authority rule books and that’s

when we ramp up our advocacy and media presence.

One of the biggest challenges we face in the policy space is taking positions that all farmers can agree with, which is really a bit of a mission impossible.

If you put two farmers together they are immediately going to find something to argue about, be it breed of livestock or colour of tractor. No matter what position we take on any issue some farmer isn’t going to like it, and my second biggest frustration is that sometimes it makes a farmer spit the dummy and resign over it.

Never mind that they otherwise agree with 90 per cent of what we say or do.

Even more unfortunately, that grudge might last a long time.

I have heard of farmers who refuse to join because something that a past president long dead did to their grandad, also long dead.

It really is fortunate that I’m not on the Feds’ sales team, because if I came across someone like that I would be explaining to them how my six-year-old shows more maturity than they do, which would probably give that family a new excuse for the next three generations.

If you don’t like some of the messages coming from Federated Farmers, better to speak

up and be involved and try to change the message. I know one young sharemilker who has been fairly critical of things that I and others have said; instead of resigning he instead took on a role. He shows more maturity than many farmers 40 years his senior.

Here’s the thing: Federated Farmers is your organisation, it’s your way to make change. Whatever you’re passionate about you can use the organisation to help pursue better outcomes for rural folks.

I would suggest you all compare the compulsory levies you pay compared to the Feds’ membership. My levies each year are 20 times my Feds’ membership.

Trust me, it’s value for money.

Considering we run on the smell of an oily rag we do achieve many things for farmers, but it would be better if the whiff of oil from that rag was slightly stronger.

Spark buying back stores Spark New Zealand is planning to buy back all its stores from external management as it works to connect better with customers bored with online shopping.

The telecommunications provider directly owns 36 stores, while 26 are under management by its dealer partners Leading Edge and Orb, and Spark wants to own all 62 retail stores by late 2017.

It doesn’t plan to close any stores and employees in the bought-back stores will be able to keep their jobs, it said.

“While e-commerce and online channels are becoming a fundamental way that businesses reach their customers, we’re seeing a resurgence in the importance of physical locations to complement the digital experiences that businesses provide,” general manager of customer channels Grant McBeath said in a statement.

“For instance, while many customers are choosing to buy online, the option to visit a physical

location to ‘click and collect’, exchange or return items, or simply get the opportunity to touch and feel a new device prior to purchase is increasingly seen as an attractive choice.

“Even dominant online retailers such as Amazon are building and buying established high

street stores that they use both as stock warehousing and as shopping destinations.”

Leading Edge and Orb will continue to run Spark’s business hubs and hybrid stores, which offer consumer and business services, as local small business owners prefer to deal with a local

Oysters will be off the menu for many New Zealanders this season.

Oysters heading for landfill The Ministry for Primary Industries has admitted it’s unsure how long it will take to remove tonnes of oysters potentially infected with the Bonamia oestreae parasite in Big Glory Bay, Stewart Island.

Work has begun to remove what local farmers believe could be more than 4000 tonnes of oysters, to contain the spread of the deadly disease.

Ministry staff were on hand to watch local farmers and fishery staff remove dozens of oyster crates from Sanford’s fisheries yesterday morning.

The cages are being lifted on to the company’s barge, before being hoisted on to a freight ship.

A chlorine solution is then applied to the cages to ensure they are cleaned.

A shroud has been placed between the two vessels to ensure drips re-enter the water.

MPI’s Southland field operations manager Andrew Sander said there was no timeline set for the complete cull.

“Today’s a big operation.

“We’ll be able to gauge how long it may take,” Sander said.

“Certainly we hope by the end of today or tomorrow we’ll have a better indication of how long it may take.”

Around 180 cages worth of oysters will be on each freight boat trip to Bluff.

From there they will be transferred to a landfill near Invercargill where they will be covered in lime and dirt. In total, about 4000 tonnes of oysters are due to end up in the dump.

The operation comes almost a month after the parasite was first found in two Big Glory Bay farms during routine checks.

It was also 10 days after the Min-

istry ordered farmers to cull all oyster fisheries in the area, as well as in Marlborough where stocks were decimated by the parasite in 2015.

Sander emphasised MPI staff had been on site “from day one, but said there may be lessons learned”.

“It’s also important to realise this is not a small operation.

“The planning stages of this is quite significant and in order for us to achieve what we want to achieve, which is a quick and smooth operation in order for the farmers and the island people and Bluff people to get back to some sense of normality, we’ve had to plan it down to the finest details.

“At the end of the operation there’ll be an extensive debrief.

“That will have us looking at ways to improve our processes and looking at ways to perhaps quicken up our processes.”

Top ploughing on display at match

It was a cold and frosty start, but competitors and spectators at the Methven Ploughing Association’s qualifying match on Sunday were rewarded with some top results.

The match was held on Neville and Marilyn Copland’s farm and was the last Canterbury event for ploughers to qualify for next year’s national championships in Southland.

Ashley Seaton, whose family farm hosted this year’s nationals on the other side of the Rakaia River, was among those to qualify for the 2018 nationals, though the Silver Plough event on Sunday was won by Kelvin Stokes.

Visiting Australian ploughman Wayne Clayton was second and Bob Mehrtens third.

Rakaia Ploughing Association secretary John Davison, who was collating results, said it was a good effort by the Australian who had been taking part in a ploughing exchange between the two countries, using borrowed gear.

He said it was a frosty start to the day, but the temperature was no problem to those ploughing.

Sunshine, blue skies and snowcapped mountains ultimately provided a spectacular backdrop for the match, which included vintage and horse-drawn ploughs.

Rakaia’s Gordon Carter won the vintage qualifier from Robert Weavers and Peter Mehrtens.

Carter was also named champion ploughman on the ground that day and best district ploughman.

The vintage open class was won by David Hight, from Ian Bulling and Colin Cross.

The horse ploughing was won

by Erin Cassie, from her Erewhon partner Colin Drummond, with H. Thorn and E. Williams third.

Davison said a good crowd gathered to watch the match.

“The frost was not hard enough to cause problems, but in the middle of winter with heavy soils and the ground frozen a couple of inches, they have had to delay starting.”

Some 33 ploughmen and women were in action throughout the day.

Proud moment for Kiwi wool farmers North Americans are now walking on New Zealand, with the help of a Mid Canterbury-based company.

Just Shorn, Carrfields Primary Wool (CP Wool)’s range of premium New Zealand wool carpets and rugs, was launched in New York City last month.

Carrfields managing director Craig Carr said the Kiwi farmers who attended the event were immensely proud to see the finished carpets and rugs, which are now available from US luxury flooring specialist Carlisle, presented at the event.

“Our growers were thrilled to have the chance to see the range and touch it,” he said.

“There was real emotion in the room as the Carlisle representatives spoke about their wool being the best in the world.”

For most of the growers, the event was a unique opportunity to see carpets made from their wool presented on an international platform, Carr said.

“Our growers got to see firsthand that their wool is a truly premium product that is in high

demand at the exclusive end of the market in the US. It was a very proud moment for them.”

The farmers were given a tour of One World Trade Center, the first

building to be completed on the rebuilt Twin Towers site.

The New Zealand contingent was the first group permitted to tour the building, following an in-

vitation from Architectural Digest.

They also met the three celebrity interior designers, Mark Brunetz, Jennifer Bertrand and Lonni Paul, who are instrumental in de-

veloping the new range of designs and are charged with producing new concepts every quarter.

Carlisle, which is well known across North America for its luxury wide plank timber flooring, recognised the potential for New Zealand wool carpet among its customer base, Carr said.

“Americans have been slow adopters of wool carpet in their homes to date. It made sense for Carlisle, which supplies the high end of the market, to offer a premium, natural soft flooring option alongside their wood product.

$5000 scholarships on offer from Silver Fern Farms Silver Fern Farms will award $5000 to six young people around New Zealand to assist with developing their careers in food and farming in the red meat sector.

Silver Fern Farms chief executive Dean Hamilton says the Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships will be awarded annually from a $30,000 scholarship fund set up to support young people who want to further a career in the food and

farming industry. “The Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarship supports our vision: Inspirational Food created by Passionate People, and we look forward to seeing New Zealand’s emerging talent taking up this opportunity to help them develop their passion for food,” Hamilton said.

“Six young people will be the first to receive $5000 to further their careers in food through the

Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships. The red meat sector is diverse, so we want to hear from applicants who want careers anywhere between the plate and the pasture – such as chefs, in food technology, food sales and marketing or as farmers.

“By the end of 2020 we aim to have supported 24 young people with $120,000 in funding towards polytech and university course

fees, farm cadet training courses, food courses, conferences and other study and training opportunities that will help them realise their food career goals.

“We believe this will provide a financial boost to young people who will help to shape the future of the food and farming industry in New Zealand.”

MARKET REPORT Dairy Ground conditions recovered this week as animals enjoy good utilisation of winter feed and straw supplements.

Heavy frosts replaced the wet but snow in the hills is forecast for later in the week.

Fonterra have announced that penalties will be imposed for overuse of palm kernel starting in June, 2018, and a test on the milk will show overuse.

Usage of this product has halved since last year to a 10-year low and feed grain prices have responded to yearly highs around $330/tonne, as the replacement supplement.

Dairy NZ, Fonterra, MPI and the Ministry of the Environment are developing a framework to reduce the carbon footprint of the sector as the pressure builds on agriculture to meet future targets.

Intensive farming is losing the battle over water with the urban population as the debate strengthens for a limit on dairy cow numbers.

Bobby calf transport rules start this year and loading facilities need to be upgraded to allow young calves to walk on to the truck.

As demand for A2 milk grows and the shares in the company hit record levels, Prof Keith Woodford suggests NZ dairy farmers not investing in A2 genes is a risk for the future of milk production in this country.

Dairy land values have stabilised at $35/ kg/ms even in the face of rising prices, with buyers wary of increased costs and extra regulations associated with intensive farming.

Lamb Winter lamb schedules are still lifting with export chasing local trade payments of $6.40/kg cwt.

More scanned dry ewes are being sold via the saleyards and are fetching strong prices in a market short of stock.

Demand is strong for in-lamb breeding ewes with some saleyards reporting deals made between $140-$160/head.

Economists suggest the indecisive British election results will probably mean another period of weak demand for lamb into that important market.

Input prices for sheep and beef farms are easing, report Beef & Lamb NZ, with interest, fertiliser and seed costs dropping but increases with fuel, R&M, and vehicle running costs.

Wool The South Island wool auction saw the market reach new lows with just over half the volumes offered reaching growers’ reserves.

Demand is stronger for the finer end of the crossbred clip but coarse indicators are trending back towards the lows set in February and everyone is concerned about the volumes of stock on hand.

Beef Still some late demand for manufacturing cows as imported beef pricing into the US remains firm.

Processors are also reporting that demand for bobby calves has improved, in spite of the currency firming recently.

Serves 5-6 400ml can coconut cream 1C chicken stock 2C water 2 stalks lemon grass, cut into 3cm lengths 2cm piece fresh ginger, thinly sliced 3 kaffir lime leaves, thinly sliced 500g Tegel Fresh Chicken Skinless Breast, sliced into thin strips 200g small button mushrooms 2 medium tomatoes, chopped 1 large red chilli, finely chopped 1/4 C lime juice 2T fish sauce 2T chopped fresh coriander

■ Place the coconut cream, chicken stock, water, lemon grass, ginger and kaffir lime leaves into a large saucepan. Bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes. If desired strain the mixture and remove the lemon grass, kaffir lime and ginger.

■ Add the Tegel Fresh Chicken Skinless Breast, mushrooms, tomatoes and chilli to the saucepan. Simmer for a further 5 minutes or until the chicken is just cooked. Add the lime juice and fish sauce.

■ Ladle into bowls and garnish with coriander.

Twisting with Peter Posa at the Radiant Hall

D

uring the 1960s Peter Posa was the golden boy of New Zealand music, riding high on a wave of popularity, with a slew of hits, including Wheels, The White Rabbit and Guitar Boogie.

Posa released 28 singles, 15 EPs and 23 albums. His most famous and controversial album was The White Rabbit and Other Tunes For Playboys. Its striking design featured a lady dressed in a Playboy-bunny style costume, bent over with her bunny tail pointed towards the camera. In 1964, it was quite the hot topic.

The White Rabbit, Posa’s most famous hit, was recorded in one take and came in at exactly two minutes. It was perfect for radio, making it a multi-platinum selling debut album. It topped the New Zealand and Australian charts in 1964 and made Posa a household name.

The hit was released in Australasia, the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Pacific Islands.

Posa toured throughout New Zealand and around the world.

He made it to America where he mixed with the big names, like Dean Martin, Chet Atkins, Herb Ellis, Hank Williams and Frank Sinatra.

After becoming homesick he came back from the States when his visa was up.

Nearly 40 years later, the album White Rabbit: The Very Best of Peter Posa was reinvented and re-released in 2012. It made it to the top of the New Zealand album charts for six weeks straight, knocking Justin Bieber out of the top spot.

The golden guitar Posa was known as the man with the golden guitar and covered many musical genres. He had taught himself how to play, never learning how to read music.

He credited this with making him more creative and helping him to come up with his unique and fresh sound.

On the home front, Peter would tour with the Miss New Zealand pageant, providing entertainment alongside names like Eddie Low and John Grenell, to packed town halls.

He was a much-loved, homegrown star. On the cusp of launching his international career in 1963, Posa was the headline act at the Radiant Hall in Ashburton.

In 1938, the former stables – located near the East Street Countdown today – became the Radiant Hall. For the younger set, it was the place to be seen, and the popular dance and social centre of Ashburton.

t all came to a screeching halt in the early 1970s when Posa was involved in a bad car accident which injured his neck forcing him to slow down and take it easy.

He kept his hand in the music scene, producing other people’s work in the recording studio.

He did tours with overseas acts in the late '70s and early 1980s, including Helen Shapiro, Gene Pitney, Hank Snow, Marty Robbins and Slim Whitman. He also produced his own greatest

album in 2012, at the age of 71.

He is now retired and lives in the Waikato town of Te Awamutu.

Posa garnered many awards, including being made an honorary chief in Fiji, known as King Peter.

The White Rabbit album received a B+ review in America’s music industry magazine Billboard. Then in the 2008 Queen’s Birthday Honours, Posa was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to entertainment.

Posa in Ashburton On April 19, 1963, the hall was host to a Radiant Twist Dance with Peter Posa and his band in attendance. Photos from the time attest to the musician’s stylish good looks and confidence, with the adoring looks of attendees making it clear that a ‘star’ held the audience enthralled.

Collegians upset Cambridge

Both of Mid Canterbury’s women’s division one hockey sides had impressive wins in the South Canterbury Hockey competition on Saturday.

Hampstead/Collegians showed some grit and caused a bit of an upset on Saturday afternoon, downing Cambridge 2-1 in Timaru.

The win moves the side comfortably clear of cellar-dwellers Craighead and within one point of fourth-placed Geraldine.

In the match at the NBS Ashburton Hockey Turf, Hampstead anchored their place in second with a 3-0 win over Craighead.

The side now sits four points behind the table-topping Timaru Girls’ High School and two points ahead of Cambridge.

In the men’s division one, Wakanui were always going to be up against it as they took on top of the table Cambridge.

Cambridge cruised to an easy 8-1 victory, a result that now leaves Wakanui tied with Tainui at the bottom of the table on seven points each, nine clear of third-placed Northern Hearts.

Both Hampstead and Hampstead/Collegians picked up victories in the South Canterbury Hockey women’s first division on Saturday.

Warren Gatland has challenged referees to stop New Zealand’s offthe-ball “blocking” in the British and Irish Lions Test series. Coach Gatland revealed the Lions have already raised the issue with officials ahead of the first test against the All Blacks on Saturday.

Gatland will meet referee Jaco Peyper on Friday to discuss the Lions’ concerns further, in a bid for a clean opening clash. “The frustrating thing for us is the amount of blocking that’s going on,” Gatland said. Gatland believes the Lions have been denied a number of try-scoring opportunities because of subtle blocking lines, especially against the Maori.

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika admits the supporter whose social media critique of the team went viral rose some relevant issues and said he shared the same emotions. Cheika spoke to the fan, Jack Quigley, over the phone on Monday after his Facebook post slamming the Wallabies for a lack of passion following their defeat to Scotland on the weekend attracted more than 40,000 likes and nearly 5000 shares. Cheika said he had also stuck the post on the walls of Ballymore, where the team is training ahead of Saturday’s Test against Italy.

Fates in the balance

Messam has once-in-a-lifetime opportunity The Chiefs won’t need much external motivation before their match against the British and Irish Lions – their shot at trying to replicate the recent feats of the Blues and Highlanders speaks for itself.

And besides, there are various individuals within the team who will provide it tonight.

Perhaps the most inspirational of those will be loose forward Liam Messam, an absolute warrior for the New Zealand Maori against the tourists on a wet and miserable night in Rotorua, and who is preparing to back up again three days later.

Messam, who scored the only try for the Maori, and got through 80 minutes of hard slog before switching to recovery mode via the healing properties of Rotorua’s famous thermal waters – and plenty of sleep – rolled out of bed yesterday morning to face the media at Waikato Stadium and spoke of his unique opportunity for his franchise.

Messam has been named on the reserves bench against the Lions, but will enter the fray in the second half and by that time he will be more than ready for battle again.

He and assistant coach Neil Barnes addressed the media in the Chiefs gym under the main stand at Waikato Stadium and noticeable to many of the visitors would have been the chart on the wall detailing the various strength and speed records of the players over the years.

Prominent among them is Messam, a 33-year-old still at the peak of his powers.

“The body is a little sore as you would expect, but I’m looking forward to having another opportunity against these guys.

“Come tomorrow night, back out here on my home pitch in front of our fans, I know those guys will get me up,” Messam said.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to play these guys and I’m lucky enough to get two cracks.”

The Chiefs will fancy their

The Chiefs will likely gain parity or even have an advantage in the scrum, as the Highlanders did. If they do that and nullify the Lions’ lineout drive, anything can happen.

In commenting on the Lions’ 32-10 victory over the Maori, Messam said: “They played really well in the second half against us.

“They trapped us in our own half and strangled us, really.”

Before Messam eased his frame off the chair, he couldn’t resist a question about captain Stephen Donald’s engagement, revealed

by Gatland, which apparently consisted of a whitebaiting expedition and the presenting of a ring near the back of Donald’s ute.

“I think they’re going to write another movie about him...,” Messam said.

“No, good on him, it’s about time he grew up.”

Gatland happy at home Warren Gatland is back home and by the look of him he could hardly be happier. The British and Irish Lions coach is among family and friends in Hamilton, his team dispatched the New Zealand Maori in one of the best displays of the tour, and in front of the media he even cracked a few jokes at his own expense, and at Stephen Donald’s, with a gentle nudge too at his All Blacks counterpart Steve Hansen. In all honesty, it was reassuring too, to see Gatland enjoying himself despite the pressure which will come on this week ahead of the first test against the All Blacks at Eden Park, with Hansen no doubt polishing a few more one-liners of his own. - NZME

New Zealand crushes England in U20 grand final

They have reclaimed the World Rugby Under 20 Championship in Georgia, defeating their England rivals 64-17 in the final in devastating fashion, scoring 10 tries to three.

It is their sixth crown in the 10year history of the tournament and was a record score in the decider, eclipsing the 62-17 win over Australia in 2010, when Tyler Bleyendaal was captain and Dave Rennie the coach.

The damage was done in the first spell of the match, as New Zealand raced to a 40-7 lead with

a compelling mix of high speed rugby and support play.

It was high risk, high reward rugby and yesterday it paid off in spades.

Flanker Dalton Papali’i opened the account, diving over the top of the ruck.

Wing Caleb Clarke was a constant menace on the left flanks,

while fullback Will Jordan set up two superb tries with long breaks.

Halfback Ere Enari and captain Luke Jacobson operated with quiet efficiency, and then the latter uncorked two tries to cap a fine tournament.

The individual star of the final, however, was Wellington hooker

Asafo Aumua, who scored a hattrick, including one solo try in which he beat no less than six defenders.

England captain Zach Mercer summed up New Zealand’s dominance.

“I’ve never witnessed a team that just keeps coming like that with that spirit.”

MC women run rampant

It was another mixed bag of results for Mid Canterbury’s footballing sides over the weekend, with some teams boosting their title chances, while others slipped back in to the middle of the table.

In the women’s second division, Mid Canterbury kept up their imperious form, breezing past the Hornby United Women 9-0.

The win sees the side move eight points clear of second place, with a dizzying goal-difference of 90.

In the men’s division two, the Mid Canterbury Seniors showed signs of improving form, losing a close match against the Halswell United Goal Exchange 2-3.

The Methven FC Seniors have seen their hopes of a title severely dented after a comprehensive 4-0 loss to league leaders, the Western Rhinos.

The loss drops Methven down

to third on the table, seven points behind Western.

Mid Canterbury’s Masters side also had a tough weekend, starting off their first match in the new third division with a 1-2 loss against the Papanui Redwood Pirates.

In the youth grades, Mid Canterbury’s 19th grade side stumbled for the first time this season as they were held to a 2-2 draw against Burwood.

The division two leaders still sit three points clear of Papanui Redwood.

Mid Canterbury’s 17th grade side have kept their record of high scoring fixtures going after a nine-goal thriller on Saturday.

The side lost narrowly to Christ’s College’s 2nd XI 5-4, meaning the side has now scored 15 goals and conceded 19 in four games in division three.

In the 15th grade division one, Mid Canterbury have moved up to fourth place despite losing 2-6 against Cashtech’s a-team.

Hartley and Bamber win Le Mans crown Kiwis Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber have miraculously fought back to win the famed Le Mans 24 Hour Race in France.

Porsche drivers Hartley, Bamber and German Timo Bernhard appeared to have no hope of winning after their car spent more than 90 minutes in the pits early in the race following mechanical problems.

They returned to the track and took advantage of a host of crashes and withdrawals from LMP1 class rivals, claiming the lead with just over an hour remaining.

Bernhard drove through the closing stages to take the cheq-

uered flag in one of the more remarkable results at the world’s pre-eminent endurance car event.

“Le Mans is one crazy race,” a tearful Hartley said.

“The mechanics worked incredibly hard on Saturday evening to get our car repaired in super fast time and since that moment Timo, Earl and myself, together with our engineers, have been pushing hard, 100 per cent every second, and desperately hoped that our efforts would somehow pay off.”

It is a second Le Mans title for Bamber, who won in the 2015 edi-

tion, also in a hybrid Porsche car.

Hartley was second that year.

Bamber, 26, believed all hope was lost after spending so long getting repairs before the sun set and dropping to second-last.

“When I heard it [the engine] go ‘bang’ I thought, 100 per cent, our race was over,” Bamber said.

Bright future tipped for 3YO Viktor Vegas’ connections have confidence in the well-bred three-year-old’s ability to make his mark in the higher grades.

The son of Tavistock was a trial winner in the autumn before he finished fourth, after an interrupted run, at his Ruakaka debut last month.

Viktor Vegas then exceeded his trainers’ expectations last time out at Avondale where he broke his maiden by a widening seven lengths in the hands of Matt Cameron.

“We think a fair bit of him and the way he won the other day was really impressive, it surprised us a bit how he got the job done so well,” said Andrew Forsman, who trains in partnership with Murray Baker.

“We would like to maybe give him one more run and then put him out with a view to the spring.

“We’ll see if we can find a reasonable track somewhere.”

Forsman has no doubt that the gelding will be more effective on good ground.

More to come Team New Zealand helmsman Peter Burling believes the Kiwi syndicate are not even close to tapping out the potential in their race boat.

Burling and crew rounded out the opening weekend of the America’s Cup match in Bermuda with another two impressive victories over Oracle Team USA to move to 3-0 in the first-to-seven series.

While Team NZ have recorded four wins over the weekend, they entered the Cup match on –1 due to a new format quirk.

With the racing being held on the weekends in Bermuda, there is now a five-day before race five and six.

That break will come as great relief for Oracle, for whom it is now clear Team NZ hold a massive speed advantage over.

Oracle skipper Jimmy Spithill admitted his team will need to make major changes if they are to turn the match around.

“I think it’s pretty obvious these guys are faster and we need to make some serious changes,” said Spithill after the team’s fourth successive loss.

“Clearly, we need to now put everything back on the table.

“I think these next five days will be the most important five days of the campaign.”

As Spithill pointed out, Oracle have been in this position before, having been forced to play their postponement card early on in the last Cup match in San Francisco to buy themselves some time to address some deficiencies in their set-up.

1st XV gives rivals a nudge

Despite coming away with a loss, Mid Canterbury Combined Schools’ 1st XV coach Gary McCann is delighted with how his team went toe-to-toe with UC Championship heavyweight Christ’s College on Saturday.

The combined side led Christ’s at half-time 17-12, but were unable to hold on in the second half, eventually slipping to a 3917 loss.

“The boys were playing extremely well,” he said. “It was a game of two halves really, we were on top for about 45 minutes but then they scored a few

tries out wide and one under the posts and it slipped away.”

Still building with a young team, McCann said he was very happy with the performance.

“We are extremely delighted with the boys, and their attitude as well,” she said.

“They’ve really stepped up to the mark, and to put in a performance like that against a heavyweight in the UC championship.

“We’ve taken a lot from the game moving forward in to our next few games as well.”

Backing up a brace of tries last week, No.8 Elama Touli was on the scoresheet once again on Saturday.

“He is an outstanding player.

“He just grows and grows and gets better and better every week, and his confidence grows along with that,” said McCann.

“Both Simon (Fleetwood) and I are pretty excited about what we have got and what is coming in to the fold moving in to the next couple of years.”

Joining Touli in the try-scorers column were first-five Josh Ree, and winger Marcus Bishop, whose try was described by McCann as “beautiful”.

“He scored pretty much from the 22, he beat about six or seven players to go in and score,” he said.

Despite only implementing a new attacking structure on the Tuesday before the match, McCann said the players had really taken it on board.

The team will face two tough games over the next few weeks, first taking on St Andrew’s College followed by St Bede’s College the week after.

However, they are both games that McCann says they have identified as must-win matches.

“Our work-ons for this week will be the defensive pattern and working on the attacking shape, as well as moving the ball quicker off set pieces,” he said.
