Referee abuse in rugby has come under the spotlight for the second time this season in Mid Canterbury after a player was banned for 38 weeks following an incident in a local match.
An Allenton Senior B player was handed down the penalty last week after he was found guilty of dissent for a tirade at a match official in his side’s match against Methven. And in the eyes of Mid Canterbury Rugby Football Union boss, Ian Patterson, that’s two incidents
too many this season. “It’s disappointing that for the second time this season we are having to address a situation like this,” he said yesterday. The latest case follows on from one earlier this season in which a Methven senior rugby player
was banned for eight weeks after he abused a referee in a Country Combined Rugby match between his side and a Kaiapoi side. In both instances the abuse has been of an obscene nature and hasn’t just been a one-off comment. While deeply concerned at
