Parent support programme axed

A parent support programme that has helped hundreds of Mid Canterbury families over the past 25 years has been scrapped.

Presbyterian Support Ashburton manager Jackie Girvan said the service had been informed funding for the Parents As First Teachers (PAFT) would cease at the end of September.

The service contracts to run the PAFT programme for the Timaru, Ashburton and Selwyn districts, employing three

part-time parent educators to provide monthly home visits to the 96 families currently on the books.

However, the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) has opted to redirect funding into the more intensive Family Start programme.

“The $7.3 million that is currently allocated to PAFT is being reprioritised to support more vulnerable children and their families through the intensive home visitation programme Family Start,” MSD spokesperson Ruth Palmer said.

The expansion will result in 1250 additional families receiving Family Start across New Zealand, Ms Palmer said.

Family Start does not currently run progammes in any of the three districts the Ashburton service covers.

MSD has listed Timaru/Ashburton as one of four new sites due to open in October, and is working with existing Family Start providers to assist their expansion into the new territories.

Euthanasia debate set to break records There have been 22,000 submissions on a petition to legalise euthanasia in New Zealand – a debate that is on track to break Parliamentary records.

The petition, from the Voluntary Euthanasia Society, was presented to Parliament a year ago.

Parliament’s health committee is considering the petition, and is working through about 22,000 submissions.

The petition’s sponsor, former Labour MP Maryan Street, said the “flood” of submissions was at a level last seen during debate on the marriage equality bill.

There were 21,500 submissions on the marriage equality legislation in 2012.

“It is an overwhelming response and demonstrates the strong public desire for MPs to tackle the subject,” said Ms Street, who was yesterday confirmed as the new president of the Voluntary Euthanasia Society at its annual meeting in Wellington.

“The committee has undertaken to travel out of Wellington to hear submitters and that process is likely to begin in August.”

Australian television and radio host Andrew Denton addressed the society’s AGM. Mr Denton has been campaigning for voluntary euthanasia in Australia, including

producing a 17-episode podcast about the right to die with dignity.

His interest came after he watched his father die slowly and in pain in 1997.

Mr Denton said research showed that there were the same issues in Australia and New Zealand.

“In your country, as in mine, the doctors are assisting people to die but without oversight and without guidance and without guidelines and scrutiny,” Mr Denton said during an appearance on The Nation.

“In your country and in mine, elderly people are suiciding in desperate ways.”

In response, Matthew Jensen, from the lobby group Care Alliance – an alliance including the Salvation Army – said Mr Denton was “spreading fear”.

“What hospices and palliative care people do is they deal with the whole person, and they walk that journey with them, and that’s what we should be doing, not giving them a lethal injection.”

Legalising voluntary euthanasia would follow in the footsteps of a handful of overseas jurisdictions, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Oregon and four other American states.

Huge haul of animals for hunters More than 200 keen hunters gathered in the Hotel Ashburton carpark yesterday to weigh their kill for the Mid Canterbury Hunting Competition.

One of the organisers, Richard Clucas, said hunters from all over the South Island spent the week-

end on the chase for deer, chamois, wallabies, rabbits and hare.

“It went very well.”

The weather was perfect for the competition, which kicked off at midnight on Thursday, but turned sour by the weigh-in yesterday from 11am to 2.30pm.

However, it did little to dampen people’s spirits as they gathered to be judged.

The organising committee are now gearing up for next year which will be the competition’s 10th anniversary with plans for something a little bit special.

“We are hoping we would be offered the opportunity to tender,” Mrs Girvan said.

“We will be carrying on with our

current clients until the end of September, with the idea of transferring them to another service, but we aren’t taking any new families on at the moment.”

While MSD has spruiked the advantages of redirecting some existing PAFT clients to Family First and others into alternative targeted parenting programmes, many former clients are not convinced.

More than 3000 PAFT supporters have signed a petition and left comments protesting the move, one going so far as to describe the programme as the “ambulance at the top of the cliff”.

They fear a new layer of vulnerable families will surface above the Family First eligibility line – and PAFT won’t be there to catch them.

Reflect on refugees

Mount Hutt reviews its health curriculum

Ashburton’s Pat O’Brien is urging Mid Canterbury people to take a moment today to think about life as a refugee.

New Zealand welcomes 750 refugees every year and over the next two years will welcome 600 more from Syria - they could be your new neighbours.

Refugees spend six weeks at the Mangere refugee resettlement centre before relocating initially to Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Nel-

son and Dunedin. The Red Cross helps them settle into communities and find jobs.

Mrs O’Brien, who is a national Red Cross counsellor of honour, and her husband Kevin were guests of immigration minister Michael Woodhouse last week at an event in Wellington ahead of World Refugee Day. The event was to celebrate young Kiwis from refugee backgrounds.

She said it was a huge privilege to attend and speak to new Kiwis enthusiastic about their lives in New Zealand.

The guests heard from Giselle, 18, who arrived in New Zealand with her family from Rwanda to Malawi, where they faced much discrimination.

“She had zero English but is now fluent in the languages. She attends Nae Nae College and is planning a career in law,” Mrs O’Brien said.

They also heard from Daniel, 16, a confident young man who arrived with his family three years ago from Syria through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

“He loved his time at the Mangere centre and was able to continue his education there and at Nae Nae College, where he is now. He was so keen that he has joined everything that is on offer at the school and is sitting NCEA level one this year.

“He just wants to be a good New Zealander.”

She said the pair were thankful to all those who had helped them and their families, including teachers, new friends, the Red Cross, Refugee Council and the New Zealand Government.

Story becomes a book Ashburton resident Deirdre Moses has added another string to her bow with the publication of a children’s book.

The beauty therapist and founder of Fruit Fund Ashburton wrote the story based on a tale told to her daughter by her grandmother a few years ago about a pig that ate everyone’s flowers.

Mrs Moses thought the story was so great that it needed to be turned into a book and enlisted help of local artist Lisa Harper to illustrate.

“She did these incredible illustrations.”

Poppy Pig and the Magic Fairy Garden was printed for the first time on Friday and a book signing was held that evening.

The book is available by contacting Deirdre Moses via her Facebook page or on 308-3913.

Mount Hutt College’s Physical Education and Health curriculum is undergoing some changes this year.

The school is in the process of undertaking a review of the department Kris Canham which is likely to be implemented by the beginning of next year.

Acting principal Kris Canham said the school chooses a different area to review each year and PE/health has been chosen for 2016.

“Each area gets a review on a rotation and that’s the area we’ve decided to spotlight for this year,” she said.

Students and parents have been sent a survey to find out what they want from the curriculum.

The curriculum is being extensively studied, documents audited and classes observed to look at the facilities and learning.

This has helped staff see what is working well and what needs to be improved, she said.

“The review will be presented at the next board meeting.”

Following this, some changes will be decided upon and will start to be implemented from next year.

Depending on what the changes are they could be applied straight away or might take a little longer.

“There’ll be some things that we will implement in a short timeframe.”

Hard work rewarded

Two Year 12 Mount Hutt College students have been recognised for their abilities by different national organisations.

Aleks Small recently found out he was one of 31 people to be selected into the SADD (Students Against Dangerous Driving) National Leadership Programme and Lachlan Sheehan received an ACG Yoobee Creative Excellence Award earlier this term.

Aleks said he was really pleased to find out he had been accepted onto the programme which will hopefully help him towards other leadership roles in the future.

“I was quite surprised when I found out. I put in an application but I thought it was a long shot to get chosen.”

The 17-year-old was chosen to represent the district to support the development of initiatives to tackle dangerous driving amongst youth.

He will be travelling to either Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington or Auckland for several leadership workshops during the next two holidays as part of the programme.

A body was found on the edge of the Waikato River in Hamilton yesterday. A police spokeswoman confirmed police found and removed the body at 11am yesterday near fallen trees on the part of the river which backs on to Jesmond Park in Claudelands.

There are no suspicious circumstances and police are now working to identify the body.

Police would not make any further comment at this stage.

the only one, out of about 30 people, to receive one from the programme.

Lachlan, who is also 17, said he was “stoked” to receive the award as he would like to pursue a career in the film industry.

During the course Lachlan was a camera man for a short film about poker that he had to also edit.

He hopes to do the advanced course during the next holidays and go from there.

A sinister attack on a woman in Christchurch yesterday was thwarted when the plucky female fought back – smashing her assailant in the face with a cellphone. Between 3am and 3.30am a man approached a woman in Riccarton, grabbing her and pulling her into a bush. But the woman struck the attacker with her phone and ran off. Police are investigating and say the man may have suffered injuries to his head or face. Two divers dead Two divers have been confirmed dead near Pourerere Beach in southern Hawke’s Bay. A police spokeswoman said police were first called to the beach about 3.30pm yesterday after two people had gone diving but only one had returned. The Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the scene just after 4pm. Just after 5pm, the body of the missing diver was found. About 5.40pm, the spokeswoman confirmed a second diver had died. She said this person was not a member of the earlier diving party. - NZME

South Pacific brought to life The Kermadec region in the South Pacific will be brought to life at the Ashburton Art Gallery this week.

In conjunction with a current exhibition, Kermadec-Lines in the Ocean, the gallery will be hosting a joint artist talk on Wednesday, at 11am, by three New Zealand artists who travelled to the Kermadec region.

Celebrated New Zealand artists Bruce Foster, Gregory O’Brien and Elizabeth Thomson will share with the local community their experiences on Raoul Island and what they encountered on their week-long voyage to one of the last great ocean wilderness areas on the planet.

They will give insight into how this experience is reflected in the art.

Foster is a notable photographer in New Zealand who emerged in the 1970s. His colour photographs are focused on the New Zealand coastline, with a dialogue between the natural and the human-made.

O’Brien is based in Wellington and has a cross-disciplinary practice as a poet, essayist, painter, anthologist and curator.

Two arrested A man and a teenager have been arrested in relation to an unexplained death in Mt Wellington on Saturday. A 21-yearold man and a 16-year-old boy, both from Otahuhu, have been charged with assault. They will be appearing in Manukau District Court today. Police said further charges are possible as they continue their inquiries. They are working to identify and locate others involved in the attack, which left a 42-year-old man dead just after midnight on Saturday morning.

A young woman was sexually assaulted near a liquor store carpark in Napier early yesterday.

The woman was picked up in a white four-door vehicle near the Ahuriri Liquorland carpark in West Quay at about 3.30am.

Two women hopped out of the car and a man drove off with the young victim. The three occupants are described as being of Indian descent. The driver stopped at a secluded carpark near the hockey grounds at Park Island and assaulted the young woman.

The man also struck her on the face causing possible injuries to her face and nose before fleeing the scene. The victim has minor injuries.

Fisherman falls from cliff

By Patrice Dougan A fisherman who fell from a cliff on to rocks near a popular fishing spot east of Auckland yesterday has been described as a “lucky man” after he was found by another fisherman taking a walk on the beach.

The man, believed to be aged in his late 40s, fell from a walking track at Sugar Loaf Point, also known as Snake Gully, off the Kawakawa Bay Coast Rd, Kawakawa Bay around 10.30am.

He is estimated to have fallen up to 10 metres, after initial reports claimed he fell anywhere between 20m and 50m.

The incident sparked a dramatic rescue operation, pulling

in the Fire Service, ambulance, Coastguard and the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

The man was walking to the fishing spot, down a “well-trodden path”, when he slipped and fell at a particularly narrow and slippery section of the track, Peter Legg, station officer at Kawakawa Bay Volunteer Fire Brigade, said.

His fishing tackle and bait could be seen in the grass where he lost footing.

There was no railing at the section where the man fell, Mr Legg said.

“There was a fisherman already down there, and he went off for a wander to stretch his legs, and he found the guy. So he could have been there for a little while.”

Mr Legg added: “He went off for a walk and heard him, more than saw him.”

The man was not a local, Mr Legg said, describing him as of Asian descent and aged between 45 and 50.

Another fisherman in a kayak also saw the commotion.

Local emergency services were soon on the scene, and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was also called to help reach the man.

“They dropped the paramedic off and he, along with ambulance people and our local first response, tended to him,” Mr Legg, who was the lead firefighter on the operation, said.

“We put him in a sling and carried him out to a point where

the chopper could come and winch him off, and they took him around to what we call Waititi Bay, which you can actually see from where he fell, and got him into the back of the helicopter and away they went.” He was “a lucky man”, Mr Legg said.

Despite the lack of railing and slippery nature of the path, Mr Legg said: “We don’t get a lot falling over there.

“But it’s one of those things where I suppose if you look out to sea or something you’d probably miss where you’re supposed to go, which is easy because there’s a lovely view from there.”

A spokeswoman for Middlemore Hospital said the man was now stable.

Cow hit by car A group of tourists crashed into a cow in King Country early yesterday. None of the four men in the car were injured after the crash on State Highway 3 near Te Kuiti, but Northern Fire Communications shift manager Scott Osmond said the cow died as a result. “There were no significant injuries,” he said. “They were all a bit lucky, except for the cow.” Te Kuiti Fire Brigade deputy chief fire officer Phil New said the group were heading to Taupo from Waitomo when they hit the cow after it walked on to the road.

Man arrested

Crash victims named Police yesterday released the names of a motorist and a cyclist killed in a horror crash outside Christchurch.

Cyclist Phillip Eden, 60, from Ohoka, and motorist Mark Vincent Green, 57, from Shirley, Christchurch, died at the scene of Friday’s crash, despite the efforts of paramedics to save them.

Police believe a Toyota Corolla collided with a Downer truck-and-trailer unit, causing its trailer to hit a cyclist.

Officers are investigating the cause of the crash and it’s understood alcohol and speed are being proved as possible factors.

Emergency services were called to Empire Rd in Kainga, near the Old Waimakariri bridge on the northern outskirts of Christchurch, about 3.30pm on Friday.

An earthquake struck near Hawkes Bay yesterday. The 4.2 magnitude quake hit 35km south-east of Wairoa at 8.53am. With a depth of 45km, the earthquake was described as being “light” by GeoNet, but it was likely to have been felt.

A man with links to the Mongrel Mob has been arrested in relation to the shooting of a 14-year-old boy in Hamilton. Teina Williams was arrested early yesterday at a Hamilton address. He will appear at Hamilton District Court today, and police are continuing their investigation. A police spokeswoman said he was facing only a charge of having a warrant for his arrest at this stage. The 14-year-old boy suffered minor injuries after he was shot at an address in Norrie St on Thursday evening.

Show of skill at Trust Event Centre Dozens of up-and-coming highland dancers from all over the South Island descended on the Ashburton Trust Event Centre yesterday. The Ashburton Highland and National Dancing Association’s annual competition had competitors take to the stage for a variety of dances including the highland fling, the Irish jig and the sword dance. Judges from Feilding and Lower Hutt came especially for the event.

An elderly woman was seriously injured when she crashed her car after suffering a “medical event” in Wellington yesterday. The woman left the road and crashed into a wall on Gannet Way, Whitby.

She was the only occupant. A Fire Service spokesman said the woman was cut out of her vehicle by firefighters from the Porirua station. The woman was taken to hospital suffering serious injuries, a police spokeswoman said. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash, which happened just before 3pm, and no road closures.

Government veto extremely disappointing

s a soon-to-be mum, I’m extremely disappointed that the government used their financial veto power to put an end to extending paid parental leave to 26 weeks.

On Thursday, finance minister Bill English vetoed the bill after it passed its second reading with 61 votes to 60 two weeks ago.

The reason for this was the cost of the bill, which if passed into law, would amount to about $278 million over the next four years on top of $251 million a year expected to be spent under the existing paid parental leave network.

Yes, it is a lot of taxpayer money but shouldn’t we be trying to help the parents; the people who are bringing the next generation into the world?

New Zealand is already far behind other countries like the United Kingdom which offers 52 weeks and Sweden 16 months.

Most parents are entitled to unpaid parental leave for a year in New Zealand but with the rising cost of living, many cannot afford this and have to go back to work after 18 weeks when their paid leave ends.

Studies have shown the importance of parents spending time with newborns, both for the babies themselves and the parents.

There are health, social, economic benefits and many important developments in a baby’s brain during this time.

Twenty-six weeks is also the World Health Organisation’s recommended time for breast-feeding and it can be very difficult for breast-feeding mothers if they go back to work earlier than this.

Let’s not try to push our mothers back into work so soon when some might argue that once their child is born they have just nabbed the most important job of their life.

I’m not saying that mothers should never go back to work, but helping new parents out for 26 weeks should not feel like a burden on the taxpayer.

The health and well-being of New Zealand’s future generations should be a priority, so why can’t we help them get the best start in life?

ew Zealand’s lakes and rivers are a source of national pride.

They provide New Zealanders with great recreational spaces and are a huge attraction for our booming tourism sector.

Our freshwater resources are an integral part of Kiwi culture, which is why the Government is more committed than ever to progressively cleaning up New Zealand’s lakes and rivers.

We continue to do more than any Government in history to improve our freshwater quality.

We are implementing sciencebased, practical solutions that don’t have an unnecessary and adverse impact on jobs and the economy.

We have spent $115 million on water clean-ups and committed $350 million – a fivefold increase in funding – for lake and river clean-ups.

This compares to a mere $29 million spent by the Labour Government between 2000 and 2008.

Locally, we have recently invested $312,000 into the Hinds/

Hekeao Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) Site.

The project is a pilot to test the feasibility of recharging groundwater sources to help boost lowland streams and reduce nitrate levels. If successful, this will help support 30,000 hectares of irrigated land in the area.

I attended the opening of the pilot and was impressed with the potential it has to improve water quality and replenish groundwater levels.

While a relatively new concept in New Zealand, it is concept proven worldwide as an effective water management tool.

Projects such as Hinds/Hekeao, along with Central Plains Water and the Sheffield Water

Scheme which also recently received funding, are about unlocking the economic potential of agriculture in the region in a sustainable way.

The funding helps support the development of these irrigation proposals to the stage where they are investment ready.

Scientific research shows problems with freshwater quality in New Zealand go back many decades and are not just related to increased dairying.

There have been numerous attempts to address the issue but it has been difficult to reach consensus on acceptable solutions that address both environmental and economic concerns.

That’s why in 2009 we established the Land and Water Forum (LAWF) as a collaborative process to enable all the key groups to sit down and work out practical recommendations and introduced national regulations to ensure the majority of water takes are metered.

In 2011, following recommendations from LAWF, we

announced the first National Policy Statement on Fresh Water and introduced the standards framework in 2014.

We’ve also passed the Environment Reporting Act, which requires better reporting on water quality throughout New Zealand.

The Government’s newly established nutrient limits mean dairy conversions will be better managed in areas such as Southland and Canterbury and we are developing a long-term, effective strategy to ensure future generations of Kiwis can enjoy New Zealand’s beautiful rivers and lakes.

The previous Government, supported by the Greens, took no effective steps to clean up freshwater. It failed to implement any kind of plan and it was this Government that put in place the framework allowing better management of our freshwater.

Having good quality, clean freshwater has always been one of the Government’s top priorities and we continue to build on our solid track record.

Terror charges for trio Belgian prosecutors have charged three men with terror offences following overnight raids that took place amid heightened security in Belgium and France due to the Euro 2016 soccer tournament.

Three months after Islamist bombers killed 32 people in Brussels, police searched dozens of houses across the country and arrested 12 people the night before Belgium’s Euro 2016 game against Ireland.

Nine of them were released after questioning but three Belgian nationals identified as 27-year-old Samir C., 40-year-old Moustapha B., and 29-year-old Jawad B., were charged with “having attempted to commit a terrorist murder and for participation in the activities of a terrorist group”, the federal prosecutor’s office said.

Some media reports said the suspects had planned attacks against fans watching

the Euro 2016 games in Brussels, and had possibly been targeting the Belgium vs Ireland match.

Earlier, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel chaired a meeting of the government’s security council, which includes the ministers of defence, foreign affairs, home affairs and justice, after the raids and said soccer-related events would go on as planned with extra security measures.

“We want to continue living normally,” Michel said. “The situation is under control. We are extremely vigilant, we are monitoring the situation hour by hour and we will continue with determination the fight against extremism, radicalisation and terrorism,” he added.

No weapons or explosives were found during the overnight searches, which also involved 152 garage lockups.

Another life sentence

MP murder suspect in court

Egypt’s former president Mohamed Morsi has been handed another life sentence, after a court found him guilty of espionage and leaking state secrets.

Morsi, leader of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, has already been sentenced in three other cases, including the death penalty for a mass jail break during the 2011 uprising against former president Hosni Mubarak and a life sentence for spying on behalf of Palestinian group Hamas.

The court at the weekend also approved the death penalty for six others accused alongside Morsi, including three journalists sentenced in absentia. Two other defendants that had worked in Morsi’s office were sentenced to life in prison.

The sentences are the latest in a crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood since an army takeover stripped Morsi of power in 2013 following mass protests against his rule.

the frying pan, cook for two minutes and then add chicken stock and parsley.

Bring to the boil and allow to simmer and thicken for 10 minutes.

Remove pan from the heat and then stir through the sour cream and chicken.

Taste and season with salt and pepper. If using commercial chicken stock you may not need any extra salt.

Place pastry in a single layer on the bench to thaw.

Spoon the filling into 4 x 1 ½ C capacity pie dishes and cover with pastry. Seal the edges and brush with egg yolk. Prick the pastry twice to allow steam to escape.

Bake for 20 minutes or until puffed and golden.

It’s hard to find Dory on the reef

The Great Barrier Reef is teeming with life, from all types of fish through to a great variety of coral.

I

t’s easy to find Nemo on the Great Barrier reef – but much harder to find Dory.

I’ve come to Bait Reef, just off the coast of Hamilton Island, with a mission to find Dory the blue tang fish from Finding Nemo and the upcoming Finding Dory.

After the release of the original film in 2003, thousands of tourists descended on the reef to try and find the little clown fish.

Finding Dory hits cinemas this month and it’s expected to have a similar effect on tourism.

I thought I would beat the rush and get in early. But Dory is proving a little difficult to find in these waters.

“I’m not sure we have that particular type of fish. I’ve never seen her here,” Bec from Explore reef tours tells me on-board the catamaran as we head out to the reef.

“I’ve seen lots of different types of sturgeon fish but not a blue tang.”

Josh our guide admits he has never see her either, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t there. Blue tang fish are extremely shy.

So I suit up in a spring wetsuit, squeeze a mask and snorkel over my head and head to the back of

Alison Godfrey headed to the Great Barrier Reef in search of Dory before she hit the big screen. the boat. A dozen yellow-trailed fusiliers dance through the aqua water flashing blue and yellow as I dive in to the water, which is still 26 degrees despite it being June.

The only shock comes from the fish that are instantly in my face as I snorkel away from the boat.

First, a one-metre-long humphead maori wrasse, nick-named Roger, lumbers over to check me out before slowly moving off.

Then four giant black trevally lunge towards me. Just as I feel a scream build in my throat, they dart to the side, leaving my path clear and my heart pounding.

Away from the boat, the reef teems with life. Pastel-coloured, soft coral gently sways backwards and forwards with the current.

Parrot fish delight the tourists with their rainbow scales. Schools of electric blue bait fish swim like plumes of smoke along the reef’s drop off.

I keep swimming along their shifting mass trying to find the last fish in the line and can’t ever seem to beat them.

But I still see no sign of Dory.

Perhaps she’s been scared off by climate change? But while there are serious concerns about coral bleaching in some of the northern reefs, the Whitsundays and the surrounding reefs such as Bait Reef, Hook and Hardy (where the famous heart resides) have only reported minor damage.

At the spot where we are diving, the reef is looking incredibly healthy with reports of sea cucumbers increasing and the menacing crown of thorns starfish - which mysteriously multiply when the water’s pollution levels rise – in decline.

New animals are being spotted at Bait Reef every day. Just one week ago, a silver trevally appeared at the back of the boat. So maybe it will be possible to find Dory here, even if no one else has spotted her.

Suddenly there’s screams from a snorkeller. A good kind of scream. An excited scream.

A green sea turtle slowly makes his way through the water, look-

ing at the tourists in a way that makes you wonder if he’s thinking “what’s all the fuss about?”.

In Finding Nemo, the turtles hang together and cruise the current, claiming they’re “riding the wave, dude”. This guy is just hanging on his own, but Josh tells us that Finding Nemo’s depictions of the reef are indeed accurate.

“You watch Nemo and they have got it so close. There’s so many species of fish and they all have their own personalities,” he says.

“With the turtles, sometimes you get one, sometimes you get 20. Once we sat in a drift and cruised with 20 to 25 turtles, it totally felt like Crush in Nemo.”

So I’ve spotted Crush, but still no Dory or Nemo.

Just before we break for lunch, a guide tells us there’s sharks off the front of the boat. We edge our way under the bulk of the catamaran and peer down to the sandy bottom.

Sure enough the outline of a

reef shark emerges.

I’m not willing to chance that this shark is a vegetarian like Bruce even if I could dive that far, so I return to the surface to fill my lungs with air.

It’s only after lunch that I find Nemo and Marlin the clown fish, who make their home in an orange, bulbous sea anemone.

The orange, black and white fish flitter between the corals, never straying more than one metre from safety.

While Dory, Nemo and Marlin are friends in the film, they clearly don’t hang out together on this reef. Perhaps Dory, like in the film, has already started swimming to California to find her family.

Reluctantly, I board the boat and hang up my fins and snorkel for the day.

Inside the Explore boat, I search the fish chart and there she is ... Dory the blue tang or pallette sturgeon fish. It’s proof she is here somewhere – just harder to find than Nemo ever was.

But with Finding Dory releasing this month, there’s sure to be many determined fans heading to Australia’s waters.

Black enduring horror season

Wakanui Black may have been wearing a new strip but the result remained the same against a strong Cambridge side at the Ashburton Hockey Turf on Saturday.

Mitch Moore’s team were downed 8-1 by the senior men’s first division leaders in a onesided affair, while fellow Ashbur-

ton side Wakanui Blue had the bye.

Black were 4-1 down at the break with Simon Mealing’s goal offering his side’s only resistance in a fast-paced first half.

Cambridge dominated the second stanza to boost their impressive tally to eight wins from their 10 outings this season and remain comfortably at the top of the ladder – 10 points ahead

of second place Tainui.

The senior ladies teams had a better day, as league leaders Hampstead kept their 100 per cent record intact with a 2-1 win over Craighead’s 1st XI in Timaru, while Hampstead-Collegians drew 1-1 with Cambridge in Ashburton.

Hampstead found themselves down 1-0 with 15-minutes to play and faced their first loss of

what’s been an impressive campaign, but late goals from Sarah Harrison and Jess McCloy saved the day.

Meanwhile, Hampstead-Collegians were also behind with Cambridge holding a 1-0 lead.

The Ashburton side had created plenty of chances but failed to capitalise until Emma Mealings found the net to level proceedings and secure the draw.

Here’s a line few would imagine they would read during this year’s ANZ Championship: The Mainland Tactix are in the box seat to claim the final spot in the New Zealand conference finals.

The Tactix, whose record over the past six seasons reads – 10th, 10th, ninth, 10th, 10th, 10th – are a strong chance for next month’s playoffs.

The unbeaten Southern Steel have an unassailable lead atop the New Zealand conference, while the Magic secured their place in the playoffs with three rounds remaining when they notched their fifth straight win last week.

Now the battle is on for the third and final spot, with the Tactix, Mystics and Pulse all in the hunt.

In truth, all three teams have underperformed. The fact one of them will be contesting the playoffs is another black mark against the much-maligned conference system, which was introduced last season.

But it’s all a moot point now.

The trans-Tasman league is to be disestablished at the end of this season. Soon there’ll be no more conference systems, no more tinkering with the draw, and no more hand-wringing over competitive imbalances.

All that’s left is to watch the ANZ Championship peter out to its timely death.

There are three really quite average teams battling it out for one remaining position. Of those, the Tactix appear to be best-placed to take out third spot on the ladder.

The Canterbury side sit on equal points with the Mystics, they have a game in hand and the easier run into the playoffs. They will meet the bottom-placed Pulse tonight, before taking on the Thunderbirds and finish up with the Mystics in round 14.

Coaches’ call on new scoring system Saturday not only marked the beginning of the 2016 Watters Cup, but also the trial of a new scoring system. The new system allocates eight points for a penalty try, with no conversion required, six points for a try and two points for a penalty, conversion and drop goal. Guardian sports reporter James Ford caught up with the coaches of the four senior teams that kicked off their Watters Cup campaigns this weekend to get their take on the recent changes.

Playing surface slammed Australian Rugby Union chief Bill Pulver has slammed the unstable playing surface at AAMI Park as below Test standard and threatened to tear up an agreement to play another match there next year if it doesn’t improve. Wallabies ‘woeful’ England have scored a historic maiden series in Australia after outclassing an often woeful Wallabies to win 23-7 in a fiery second rugby test in Melbourne. In front of a record crowd of 29,871 at AAMI Park, the Wallabies simply couldn’t get past a heroic English defence, despite long stretches of possession and plenty of chances.

It gives England an insurmountable 2-0 Cook Cup series lead and sets up the possibility of a whitewash in Sydney next weekend.

“It made you look towards getting tries and kick the penalties to the corners.

“In tight games you still have the option of the penalties as two points is still two points and it keeps the scoreboard ticking over.”

Regan Broker, Hampstead coach “(It’s) good for a team that scores tries but if you leak tries it’s not so good,” said Broker.

“It made our score look massive, yet we had a good chance for most of the game on Saturday, but, all in all, it’s good.”

“It’s early days, but I’m not a big fan. Cynical players may give away kickable penalties knowing that the opposition will only get two points, or will take the set piece which will allow them to re-group.

This puts more pressure on the refs as it will lead to more yellow cards.

The idea is to make rugby more of a spectacle. The ball, when a set piece is opted for, is out of play for on average two minutes, whereas with a penalty kick you have one minute from the kicking tee arriving on the pitch. With more scrums and lineouts this could potentially mean that the ball is in play for less time.”

Irish squander chances

“It probably didn’t make a hell of a lot of difference, though we never took any shots at goal on Saturday,” said Ellis.

“But it was good to see a yellow card for repeated infringements, but generally if you score 10 tries you should come out on top regardless of their worth.”

Ireland rugby coach Joe Schmidt admits he has a big job on his hands to lift his troops for next week’s series decider against South Africa in Port Elizabeth. The New Zealander watched his side surrender a 16-point halftime lead to lose 32-26 at Ellis Park as South Africa produced a stunning comeback to level the series. Tries from Ruan Combrinck, Warren Whiteley, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Damian de Allende saw Ireland crumble in the face of the Springbok onslaught.

1st XV finally tastes victory

Ashburton College 1st XV’s wait for a win in this year’s UC-Championship is over after downing Rangiora High School 29-26 at the showgrounds on Saturday.

College went ahead early on when fullback Kerry Claydon-Wade crossed over and converted his own try.

The home side enjoyed plenty of possession and extended their lead in the seventeenth minute from the boot of Claydon-Wade with a well-taken penalty.

Rangiora returned fire five minutes later as imposing prop Josh Duckworth opened his side’s account, and the try was duly converted by fullback Jesse Bowring to bring the visitors within three.

College continued to play expansive, attacking rugby and were rewarded with their second try of the encounter thanks to some fine ball running from Milsy Stephen-Tahuri.

First five Western Bartlett took on kicking duties and slotted his conversion to put College ahead by seven at the interval.

College were quick out of the traps again in the second half as hooker Elama Touli dotted down for his side’s third try of the afternoon

before Bartlett collected the extras.

At 24-7, College had some breathing space, but Rangiora weren’t about to go quietly.

After pouring phase after phase on College, strong-running forward Doom Ponini touched down and Bowring made light work of his conversion to bring Rangiora back into contention.

Rangiora were in again five minutes later as Fletcher Newell dived over the line. Bowring was off target, but at 24-19 the College faithful could be forgiven for fearing a late surge from Rangiora.

Under intense pressure, Bartlett took a neat intercept and played a perfectly weighted grubber kick into the path of Stephen-Tahuri, who gathered the ball to storm over for his second and College’s fourth try of the clash with four minutes remaining.

Rangiora’s perseverance was rewarded at the death with another try from Duckworth before replacement fullback Kalani Whitehouse struck his conversion with the last kick of the tie, but it was too little too late as College recorded their first win of a frustrating campaign.

Ashburton College will have the bye next week before returning to action against Christchurch Boys’ on July 2.

Celtic, Southern record big wins

The Watters Cup started with a bang on Saturday with Celtic and Southern taking wins over Hampstead and Methven, while reigning champions Rakaia had the bye.

Celtic made the short trip to Hampstead after a week’s break and took a 40-18 win – but Hampstead did not lay down without a fight.

Angus Lindsay dotted down in the opening five minutes to score the first six point try in Watters Cup history and first five Nathan McCloy duly converted for the extras.

McCloy was on target again from a penalty with just under half an hour played to extend the visitors’ lead to 10-0 – with the new scoring system allocation of two points for all kicks.

Hampstead were quick to reply through second five Alex Hifo.

Hooker Logan Smart took a neat intercept off the ruck before offloading to Hifo, who crossed over unchallenged.

Halfback Mariota Samoa then collected the extras from his conversion to bring the home side within two points.

Hampstead drew level soon after from the boot of Samoa with a well-taken penalty as the two sides headed to the sheds in a 1010 deadlock at halftime.

Celtic returned to the fray with plenty of purpose and quickly took the lead again as fullback Hushton Tohovaka sliced through Hampstead’s defence to cross over in the corner five minutes into the second stanza.

McCloy was on hand to boost Celtic’s lead to eight points from a challenging angle.

Hampstead struggled to contain Celtic’s vigorous pace and soon increased the deficit when number 8 Danny Hurley touched down for his first of an eventual two tries.

McCloy was off target from the boot but Celtic were in a commanding position at 24-10.

Less than five minutes later Hurley added his second try to

Hampstead did manage a late consolation try through wing TJ Mareko but it was Celtic that had the final say, this time from Joe Peters following some impressive build-up play.

McCloy was as dependable as ever to add another conversion to his impressive haul as Celtic ran out clear 40-18 winners.

Despite the win, Celtic coach Shane Enright said a failure to stick to the game plan cost his side in the first half.

“Hampstead put us under a lot of pressure in the first half through us not playing to our game plan,” he said.

“We started to become very confrontational with them and that took us away from our plan to use our fitness.”

England coming for the ABs The English press are talking up the triumphant England rugby team, with claims that the world champion All Blacks will be nervous at their rapid improvement.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Sir Clive Woodward claims that the All Blacks will be keeping an eye on the impressive English after their 23-7 series-sealing win over Australia.

“Even New Zealand will be looking over the Tasman Sea this morning and wondering what is going on with because deep down every nation in the world is a little fearful of England getting their act together.”

England coach Eddie Jones has been hailed for the victory, called a peerless coach by Steve James in the Telegraph.

“The man is clearly a miracle worker. England have gone from embarrassing flops at

their own Rugby World Cup to winning eight Tests on the trot.”

Jones also provided a link to the All Blacks, saying they are the team they want to firstly model, then eclipse.

“We want to be the best team in the world and we want to win the series 3-0,” said Jones.

“If the All Blacks were in this situation now, what would they be thinking? They’d be thinking 3-0. If we want to be the best team in the world, we have to think 3-0.

Being second in the rankings doesn’t feel good because we want to be first.”

Mail on Sunday writer Sam Peters says England are now serious global players, with their Australian victory bringing back memories of the 2003 15-13 victory in New Zealand – the last time the All Blacks were defeated at Westpac Stadium.

“We let in some soft tries but Celtic deserved the win,” said Hampstead coach Regan Broker.

“We had our chances but didn’t capitalise on them, we’re looking forward to Rakaia – another hard game – but the lads are up for it.”

Meanwhile Southern were convincing in a 70-4 hiding of Methven in the day’s other Watters Cup clash.

Michael Ellis’s side led 28-4 at half time before things went from bad to worse for Methven.

Prop Mike Lynch and flanker Greg Spence were sin-binned within minutes of one another to bring the home side down to 13, and Southern ran riot.

Methven coach Andy Pearce praised his side for their efforts in the first half, but conceded Southern’s experience proved too much.

“Methven played some quality rugby for periods of the game – good quality ball from the set piece gave the backs some front ball to play rugby with,” he said.

“We competed well in the first half, but the experience of Southern took control in the second period, and we weren’t helped by being down to 13.”

Pearce said his young team are continuing to develop, and will now look ahead to their next challenging outing against Celtic.

“The forwards are bolstered by the return of some senior players and in the backs the young players are developing well,” he said.

Ellis said his side’s relentless approach in the second half was pleasing, but believes Methven were unlucky not to put more points on the board in the first half.

“Methven started well for the first 20 minutes and were probably unlucky not to score a try or two,” he said.

“Through good defence we started to build phases, we put them under pressure and were rewarded with points.”

Southern will now have a week’s layoff with the bye before returning to action against Hampstead in a fortnight’s time.

Balancing act for selectors

By GreGor Paul The series in the bag and a basic foundation laid after a 36-22 win in Wellington, the All Blacks may turn their attention in Dunedin to finding out more about the players they have not yet unleashed against Wales.

Wales remain a credible threat, a side with enough punch left to damage the All Blacks if they are given the chance.

Against that, though, coach Steve Hansen needs to see if Elliot Dixon, Liam Squire, Nathan Harris and Lima Sopoaga can find their feet at the highest level of the game.

It will be a balancing act for the selectors – a case of them having to work out how many new faces they can introduce without derailing the momentum that has been built in the first two tests.

The test in Dunedin is the last before the Rugby Championship.

The All Blacks, therefore, want to finish the series strongly, play the sort of rugby they have managed in second half patches and leave themselves in good mental shape ahead of going to Sydney in August.

Yet they also need to know whether Dixon, who has been impressive in Super

Rugby for two seasons now, can make his abrasive and high energy brand of rugby work in the test arena.

They will want to see if Squire can bring his dominant tackling to the party and whether Sopoaga’s composure and reading of the game is as good as they think it is.

There will no doubt, too, be a desire to give Harris more of a run

than he’s had and as Hansen weighs up the omnipresent risk against reward equation, the scales tip in favour of this being a test where the All Blacks will make more changes than usual.

Aaron Cruden’s neck has been deemed to be free of any structural change but as he woke up stiff and sore yesterday it’s probable he may be rested this week.

That will open the door to a new No 10 and while there will be temptation to start with Sopoaga on his home patch, it will most likely be resisted.

“I don’t think it will be too difficult,” said Hansen.

“I think the bloke who came on last night [Barrett] did a pretty good job.

“We have got a good backup in Lima coming off the bench if we do it that way or we can go the other way and put Lima into start.

“Beauden probably deserves to get the opportunity.”

Given that the selectors know just about everything they need to about Jerome Kaino, he may be rested this week to allow Dixon to fill the No 6 jersey.

Given the excellence of the All Blacks’ lineout, there will be wariness about tam-

pering with the key personnel – but again, the selectors know everything about Dane Coles and not so much about Harris.

To go into the Rugby Championship with Coles having dominated nearly all of the game time in June would carry risks and then there is the question about what to do with Julian Savea.

Should he return this week and if so, for whom?

It would be hard to leave out Israel Dagg after his polished performance, so if Savea is to return, it might be in place of Waisake Naholo.

That would be a like-for-like replacement and reunite a back three who who were the go-to combination throughout 2013 and much of 2014.

These are questions the selectors are happy to be confronting as it indicates that they have achieved much of what they set out to do in the first tests.

“We are trucking along pretty well,” said Hansen.

“We have had two good wins early in the season and while they are not perfect and yes there is a lot of improvement to be made, there has been some good composure.

“We scored five tries which we have got to be happy with – although we let in a couple of soft ones.

“Steadily as we go through this series I would expect us to improve.”

Shane van Gisbergen avoided chaos and carnage to win the final Supercars race in Darwin.

The 70-lap sprint started and ended in madness, with five cars forced to retire and one driver hospitalised.

Holden’s Van Gisbergen started from pole position but lost the lead before the first turn of a dramatic opening lap at Hidden Valley Raceway yesterday.

The Fords of Chaz Mostert and Fabian Coulthard were ripped into spare parts after a three-way tussle with Volvo’s James Moffat, ending their racing afternoons early.

Moments later, Lee Holdsworth’s Holden was bumped off track at high speed and smashed sideways into a very solid concrete barrier. He suffered a broken pelvis, chest and elbow injuries and was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.

The incidents sparked the first of three safety car periods - a record at the circuit in Supercars history.

Restarts, varying pitstop strategies and driver mistakes saw the lead change several times during the race.

The Warriors maintained their rise in form and claimed their third consecutive NRL win for the first time in almost a year by dispatching the Sydney Roosters at Mt Smart Stadium last night. Confidence can come and go but the Warriors have harnessed the intangible quality over the past three weeks, following up impressive displays against Brisbane and Newcastle with a grinding display in front of 14,026 fans, and move into the top eight.

End of a golden age Manly’s golden age appears to be over as they stare down the barrel of their worst NRL losing streak in over a decade against Gold Coast tonight. After five straight losses, Trent Barrett’s side’s finals chances are as good as dead but further embarrassment could be inflicted against the Titans at CBus Super Stadium. The Sea Eagles have not lost six straight since 2004, a year that marked a turning point in their history. After their 2004 campaign, in which they finished 14th, they went on to make 10 straight finals appearances.

“Amazing day,” said van Gisbergen, a relieved man after a mistake cost him victory from pole on Saturday.

“It’s been great all weekend.”

Six-time champion Jamie Whincup cemented his lead on top of the championship standings with an eighth place.

He now leads team-mate Lowndes by 30 points, with Volvo’s Scott McLaughlin third.

It was a disastrous afternoon for reigning champion Mark Winterbottom, who damaged his car after running into the back of Todd Kelly’s Nissan and then copped a drive-through penalty over the incident.

It summed up a frustrating night at the Parc des Princes for the Portugal captain, who is still waiting to score in a record fourth European Championship.

Koenigsegg in overdrive Excitement machine Koenigsegg One took another step on his development path with a comprehensive winning performance at Ruakaka on the weekend.

The handsome Swiss Ace three-year-old accounted comfortably for another promising type in Bao Shan Magic as the pair cleared out from their rating 75 rivals over 1600 metres on Saturday.

It was the third win for the Tony Pike-prepared gelding from just five starts with the promise of more to come next season.

“He’s a very exciting prospect as he has just got better and better in this preparation,” noted Waikato Bloodstock’s Bryce Tankard who manages the gelding for his Hong Kong based owner, Ben Kwok.

“He has always showed us plenty from day one but it has taken a little while for the penny to drop with him.

“He is still inclined to do a few things wrong in his races but he really knuckled down in the run home on Saturday and put away a field that had some very promising horses in it.”

Game 7: Winner-take-all

BY FRANK PINGUE An 82-game NBA regular season and best-of-seven playoff series has boiled down to a winner-take-all title clash between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors.

“It’s two of the greatest words in the world, and that’s ‘Game Seven’,” gushed LeBron James after his Cavaliers forced the decider on Friday with a ruthless 115-101 game six win.

Far from two of the NBA’s glamour franchises, Cleveland and the Warriors offer more grit than glitter.

But they will play for basketball’s crown jewel today in a matchup that features two of the game’s greats, four-time league most valuable player James and Warriors guard Stephen Curry, the two-time reigning MVP. Game 7 could be a classic.

Betting agencies have the Warriors moderate but by no means overwhelming favourites.

The Cavs will be tipping at historic windmills trying to become the first NBA team to overturn a 1-3 series deficit in the finals and give Cleveland their first professional sports championship since the 1964 Cleveland Browns of the National Football League.

The defending champion Warriors, after a record smashing regular season (73-

9), are rewarded with game seven at home at Oracle Arena in Oakland, where they have lost just four times all season.

“We get one game at home to win the NBA Championship, I’ll take it every time,” said Warriors coach Steve Kerr.

“So I can’t wait for Sunday.”

“We were in adversity the last series down 3-1 and had to rattle off three straight wins.

“The playoffs hasn’t been easy.

“It’s frustrating but the work we’ve put in and the opportunity we’ve given ourselves with a game seven to win the finals at home, you’ve got to be excited about that.”

Cruden cleared All Blacks first-five Aaron Cruden was cleared of serious injury after hearing his neck “crack” in a tackle during Saturday night’s test in Wellington.

Cruden was taken to hospital for scans after leaving the field on a buggy while wearing a neck brace at the end of the first half. Play was held up for about 10 minutes and his team-mates were clearly concerned.

However, coach Steve Hansen gave an encouraging report afterwards, a reassuring diagnosis for a player who has had more than his fair share of serious injuries over recent years.
