Garage fire suspicious

Police are treating a garage fire on Alford Forest Road in Allenton on Tuesday night as suspicious and are asking the public to help identify a vehicle spotted near the scene at the time it ignited.

The blaze broke out in a garage at a residential property and the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade were called to the scene at 5.08pm.

By the time three fire trucks arrived at the scene nine minutes later, the fire was well involved and thick smoke could be seen pouring from the garage while a large crowd of bystanders stood nearby.

Among them were staff from Geoff Read Ltd, who had made the call to emergency services after witnessing the blaze from their property across the road.

Firefighters cordoned off a sec-

tion of Alford Forest Road while they brought the fire under control. Fire crew were working the scene until late into the night, dampening down hot spots until fire investigators arrived later in the evening to assess the fire.

They returned again yesterday morning to complete their examination, along with a security guard who remained at the scene. Fire crew are now directing all enquir-

ies to the police.

The police said through a statement that the fire was being treated as suspicious and that they were appealing to the public for any information.

“In particular, we would like to hear from the driver of a car sighted, or anyone who saw a dark blue-coloured or black hatchback station wagon, in the area around the time of the fire.”

They asked for anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area on Tuesday evening to please contact Ashburton Police Station.

The fire was another in a string of call-outs for the local brigade this week who, after a quiet time last week, have been kept busy with a number of events.

Land sales could net $7.9 million

Millions of dollars worth of commercial land will be up for grabs if the Ashburton District Council divests itself of property as part of its civic centre and library rebuild project.

The council is currently in the process of buying land in Baring Square east for public facilities that will see a new complex built on land owned by the Methodist Church, by the council and by a private landowner.

From the outset the council had made it clear it would sell surplus land to part fund the project, council chief executive Andrew Dalziel said.

With Baring Square east now signed off as the site of choice, the council will eventually look to sell more than 5000 square metres of land and the current civic centre in Baring Square west, land and buildings on State Highway 1 where the library stands and the area off Cass and Cameron streets that is home to the old polytech building and the Balmoral Hall.

Potential return on those land sales is estimated to be around $7.9 million, Dalziel said.

“All options we considered included an estimate for potential land and building sales of the unsuccessful sites.”

Sales revenue was based on rating values and were a conservative estimate.

How much those sites would realise on the market at the time would take into account the use a buyer had for existing buildings, but the council would not be con-

sidering land sales until the project was much further down the track, he said.

“Where we are in the process is at stage one, we have three months to get a deal on the land we need, we have until the end of September to get deals that will stack up.”

If the council could not reach agreement on land purchases with the church and the private landowner, then it would have to go back to the drawing board and perhaps look at other sites, Dalziel said.

“I’m telling councillors, don’t get too far ahead of yourself. I have to know I’ve got the land before we move on to the project design phase.”

There had been talk about the need to ensure the new library was designed by a library expert and that was a legitimate request, but there was no point in thinking about design until the land deals were done, he said.

Likewise, there was no point in talking land sales until the new buildings were completed and handed over to the council. The final call on land sales would be district councillors, he said.

“At that stage you’d say, right councillors, at the consultation stage we talked about selling spare land, does anyone have a different view today about not selling it and using say reserves or debt funding the costs.”

No pre-deals would be done but there were plenty of suggestions coming forward on possible uses of some or all of the lots, Dalziel said.

Farmers are being warned to prepare for the worst again with another wintry blast set to hit the country.

Another wintery storm on its way

The school holidays look set to end on a rough note with a second wintry storm to take control of the South Island from tomorrow.

From today the weather will take a turn for the worse with 48 hours of snow, heavy rain and gales set to take over the entire country.

The equivalent of two months’ rainfall is expected to fall within the time frame in some areas as well as severe winds and snow accumulations, just over a week after the country was hit by a strong wintry blast that left snow in most high-lying areas of the Ashburton District.

Travel in both islands is expected to become chaotic with flooding, wind damage and snow

falls all potential hazards.

Farmers are also being warned to brace for the worst, particularly those with young stock on hand from the early stages of lambing and calving.

The South Island will have to shiver through another cold snap with significant amounts of snow falling to 300 metres in Canterbury and southern Marlborough and 500 metres across North Otago tomorrow.

As well, severe southerly gales were expected to howl through coastal Canterbury and the Kaikoura coast during Friday and early Saturday.

Yesterday MetService was kept busy as it issued a hoard of warnings and watches across the country.

A severe weather watch, for almost the entire eastern side

of the South Island, was issued yesterday and was expected to be upgraded to a severe weather warning either late last night or early this morning.

“We also have a severe weather watch for Canterbury and Otago for Friday and Saturday, for rain potentially reaching warning amounts and significant snow accumulations above 400m,” MetService meteorologist Robert Kerr said.

As the rain sets in during Friday, the Christchurch, Dunedin and inland areas are at risk of warning thresholds being surpassed, which could lead to rapidly rising rivers and localised flooding. This combination of heavy rain and inland snow is likely to cause significant disruption to the transport network and possibly cause power outages.

Big plans on drawing board for MSA

Within three years a rebuild project that started 15 years ago will finally be completed when the Ashburton MSA replaces the Burnett Street section of its headquarters.

When an engineer’s report indicated this section of the building needed significant strengthening after the Canterbury earthquakes, MSA manager Simon McDonnell said the club’s committee was faced with two choices – spend more than $1m on strengthening work, or a new build.

It opted for the latter and concept drawings are now with the Ashburton District Council for approval. Once that step is ticked off, the serious design work will begin, McDonnell said.

“This part was built in 1941 and the whole of this end will come down, it’s the part that wasn’t rebuilt 15 years ago.”

The new build will see the relocation of the restaurant to the ground level while the club’s offices, meeting room and snooker room will move upstairs.

One facility that won’t survive the rebuild will be the MSA library. Its popularity has been declining and the club would soon have been forced to make a decision on its future anyway, he said.

The rebuild proposal was put to members after the annual meeting.

“There seemed to be a general acceptance it was the best way forward. It’s something the committee can approve and members then have the right to call a special meeting if they want to, to say yay or nay.”

Plans are on the club’s Facebook page.

Originally the entire complex was to be replaced 15 years ago, along with car parking on the upper level but the cost was simply too high, McDonnell said.

The new section will have a larger ground floor but a slightly smaller upper level.

The distinctive art deco frontage will not be recreated in the rebuild and that’s already attracting a few comments, he said.

“We’ll take feedback on board and it’s not beyond the point where things can be varied, but not to any great degree.”

McDonnell sees positive synergies between the redeveloped MSA and a hotel planned for Eastfield on the opposite side of Burnett Street.

Having taken the club through one rebuild, McDonnell knows it’s not easy to remain in business while work is under way.

“That first rebuild was pretty horrific at times and our main problem was keeping the place open. This time round we’ll have to close the restaurant for at least 12 months,” he said.

The MSA might be looking at doing part of its business from a new building in the future, but that doesn’t mean the fixtures and fittings that have been part of the club, some since it was established in the late 1880s, will be scrapped. They’ll be important in keeping its links with the past, McDonnell said.

While it’s talking redevelopment plans, it will be business as usual at the MSA until September 2019, when the demolition is scheduled to start.

“We’ve had 10 years to strengthen or rebuild, so we’ve had plenty of time to think about things.”

Committee members had looked at rebuild projects at a number of chartered clubs and hotels to gather ideas and intend to use the architect who designed the new Papanui Club.

“That’s been a total success. They’ve made food the main focus, not booze and while we won’t necessarily be doing this, food will be a much bigger focus for us.”

Before the new restaurant opens, the club will have to decide whether to change its rules to allow all comers to use the res-

taurant or to retain its rule that visitors must be accompanied by a member.

Several years ago it changed that rule for its bottle store. This can now be used by the public with members receiving a discount.

The same system could come into play for the restaurant, McDonnell said.

“I think this is great for Ashburton. The town’s had a couple of tough years but people are positive and this is just part of it.”

The MSA was formed in 1885 and its first home was in the Ashburton Arcade. It moved to the current Burnett Street location in the late 1890s and when the rebuild is completed in 2020 it will see the last vestiges of the 1940s building disappear.

“There’ve been a lot of add-ons and take-

offs. It’s been a rabbit warren and this is the final step in consolidating the whole thing,” McDonnell said.

Currently the club’s membership sits at 4000, making it the 10th largest chartered club in New Zealand. Each month between 20 and 50 new members are added. The club has a self-imposed membership cap of 5000.

“It’d be nice to think we’d get there. In the early days the cap was much lower and it was rigidly adhered to. We only took people in when someone died or left town.”

When McDonnell took over as manager 25 years ago the club was in the throes of changing its constitution to admit female members; today women make up 25 per cent of its membership.

Skip Ahead ready to fund more recording stars Disgraced

MP finally resurfaces

Budding Ashburton broadcasters are being encouraged to apply to a fund that could send them soaring to fame as the next big YouTube star.

The Skip Ahead fund, a joint initiative between Google and New Zealand on Air, launched last year to give recognition to the growing number of Kiwis building successful careers through YouTube.

This year they are returning with $300,000 worth of funding up for grabs.

Applications opened at the beginning of July, and the coordinators hope that Ashburton residents with creative minds will send in their pitches.

Successful applicants will receive a share of the fund and also attend skill workshops to help develop their narratives into a web series as well as build a global audience.

Robbie Nicol won a share of the funding last year with his popular satirical commentary videos called White Man behind Desk, and said it allowed him and his YouTube team to take on challenges he would never have considered.

“We brought in local musicians, created an album as well as a web series and developed a project which is totally unique – a musical set in a children’s indoor playground.”

Disgraced MP Todd Barclay has resurfaced for the first time since announcing his resignation last month.

The National Party has been feeling the heat over CluthaSouthland MP Barclay’s sudden disappearance, after allegations he secretly recorded a staff member during an employment dispute.

Barclay announced on June 21 that he would not seek re-election.

He’s now posted on Facebook for the first time, seemingly in response to mounting questions about his whereabouts.

In the picture, he holds up a hand-made card from a constituent, and beams widely into the camera.

“Been in my Queenstown office today working on constituent issues and signing out letters and it was nice to receive this handmade card from a young constituent!” the caption reads.

One media organisation commented, writing “Hi Todd, we sent you a card too – it had 10 questions on it. Talk soon?”

Other comments were a mix of people who angrily accuse Barclay of lying to the electorate, and supporters who thank Barclay for the work he’s doing.

Call line helps keeps admissions down

Mid-winter chill in the Ashburton District has not been matched by a surge in admissions to Ashburton Hospital.

In several parts of New Zealand hospital emergency departments have been packed with patients seeking medical attention and in some cases the influx of patients has been so great that people

have been forced to wait in ambulances.

The Canterbury DHB, however, has not experienced the same patient overload.

In Ashburton, like the rest of Canterbury, the demand on emergency and acute care has not been high, largely because of the strong primary health system and integrated care across the community, manager Ashburton

Health Services Bernice Marra said.

As part of the care-around-theclock service that was available in Canterbury, people were able to access 24-hour health advice by talking to a nurse.

The service is accessed by calling your general practice phone number night or day, she said.

“This is helping us manage some of the winter health ail-

ments you might expect to see through the hospital.” Marra said.

Ashburton Hospital might not be noticing a surge in patients with winter-related illnesses, but for GPs this winter was no quieter than previous years, Sealy Street medical practice manager Kaye Kennedy said.

Staff had noticed an increase in patient numbers over the past three weeks, she said.

Nationally St John has experienced a significant increase in its workload in June.

There was an 8 per cent increase in 111 emergency calls over June 2016, with the greatest growth in numbers in Northland, Waikato and the greater Auckland area.

Last week St John had its busiest week in its history with 1373 incidents.

Many licensing trusts a success, book reveals Ashburton has its own chapter in a book detailing the unique history of licensing trusts in New Zealand.

Former prime minister David Lange called licensing trusts a bizarre social experiment, but they have stuck around despite losing their competitive edge in the sale of alcohol.

They were originally formed to stem the tide of lawlessness and societal ills around the sale of liquor.

The Ashburton Licensing Trust came into being in 1949, after prohibition was voted out, and the district voted for trust control over alcohol sales rather than private enterprise. For decades it had a monopoly on the sale and supply of alcohol in most of the district.

But a competition poll in 2004 was lost 49 per cent to 51 per cent, allowing beer and wine to be sold in supermarkets in the Ashburton trust catchment. Last year the trust said it would eventually quit its licensed premises and become a landlord.

Central characters in the life of the trust since its inception include Cliff Moody, who started as a clerk in 1950 and ended up retiring as

general manager in 1983, long-time trust chairwoman Dorothy Moon and Peter O’Leary, chief executive from 1983-2005.

The Todd family also features, three members have been president (Tony for 12 years until 2010), while his grandfather, father and uncle also served on the trust.

A Great Social Experiment, The Story Of Licensing Trusts In New Zealand has been written by Bernard Teahan, who worked as a chief executive of licensing trusts for 30 years, mainly with Masterton’s Trust House, one of the oldest and most successful trusts in the country.

Teahan charts key events and people over the 70 years of New Zealand Trust history and says trusts stand out as community-led, socially-orientated organisations in a landscape dominated by private enterprise and the profit motive.

The first trusts were established in the 1940s, Ashburton’s among them, and communities took control of the sale of alcohol, generating profits to provide much-needed hotel accommodation, and a percentage of the profits being channelled back into their communities.

“One of my motivations for writing the book was to address the idea that licensing trusts were an ill-considered concept doomed to fall short of their ideals and eventually mould away in some damp and dusty cupboard of history,” Teahan said.

“I wanted to challenge the prevailing wisdom that private enterprise will always outperform public or community ownership.”

Though some trusts have faltered and died over the decades, Teahan says most were successful, donating millions to their communities and generating annual revenues of $350 million.

Invercargill Licensing Trust and Masterton’s Trust (the latter established in 1947) are the oldest and most successful – the forces behind community facilities such as stadiums, recreational facilities and numerous hotels and restaurants.

Trusts are also still greatly valued in Mataura, West Auckland and Flaxmere; 18 communities in all.

Teahan, an accountant, examined the role of trusts during studies at Victoria University and the book is a result of his research.

Dancers star at highland championship

Ashburton continued its strong association with the world of Highland Dancing with outstanding results at the New Zealand Highland and Dancing Championships in Christchurch last week.

Six dancers walked away as ranked in their respective age groups and there were a number of outstanding individual results from the course of the championship too.

Sarah Gluyas went close to pro-

ducing one of the results of the week with her runner-up effort in the 18-year-old and older category.

She picked up three individual titles over the course of her event with victories in the Highland Reel, Highland Fling and Reel O Tulloch.

Others to perform with distinction were Britney Moore who finished ranked third in New Zealand in the Under 18 category while her sister Lucy finished in the same position in the Under 16 age group

Smiles 4 Miles to be held in August

Thanks to Ryal Bush Transport Ashburton, August 19 should hopefully be a happy day for those living with daily challenges.

The company are holding a Smiles 4 Miles event in support of those adults and children who are living with illness and disability.

People will be able to go for rides in a wide range of vehicles, including trucks, vintage cars and hot rods.

“We sent out an email about six months ago asking businesses if they would be willing to support the event and the response

was great,” said organiser Tammy Wright.

“The Vintage Car Club and Hot Rod Car Club have come on board, as well as St John Ambulance, Police and the Fire Service will also be coming.”

A free sausage sizzle will be available for the drivers and passengers which will be supplied by the local Rapid Relief Team.

A raffle will be held on the day, starting at lunchtime at the Ryal Bush Transport Ashburton location on 77 Maronan Road.

The planned route is for the vehicles to travel along West Street, before making a loop up around Racecourse Road.

Peters confirms he wants a full Maori seat referendum NZ First leader Winston Peters has now confirmed he wants a full referendum on the Maori seats after appearing to suggest he was reconsidering whether to put the matter to Maori only.

Peters said he agreed it was up to Maori to decide on the future of the seats, and he would deliver a speech on the referendum soon.

Asked about MP Pita Paraone’s belief it should be for Maori voters only, Peters said: “Of course it should be up to Maori to decide if the seats go, but I’m making a speech about it very shortly and I will tell you the full parameters of that.”

Asked if he was still propos-

ing a referendum of all eligible voters, he said: “Well, I’ve heard what has been said by people who have interviewed Pita and maybe others, and the question is whether it is full conscription and I’ll have that answer in a speech I’m giving shortly.”

He said as well as Maori on the Maori roll, there were Maori on the general roll and those who were not enrolled at all.

Yesterday he said the conclusion that might signal a rethink on a universal referendum was “unmitigated crap” and “false news”. He was not considering a change from his initial promise of a binding referendum of all voters on the matter.

Asked what he had meant, Peters said he thought he was being asked whether Maori who were not on the Maori roll would get a vote – although the question he was asked was whether the referendum would be all eligible voters.

“I said we were going to have a full referendum. Why would anybody think otherwise? If there was an exception, or a codicil or a proviso we would have said so.”

He would not say what the speech he was referring to would actually be about or when he would deliver it.

That speech would include cartoons for people who could not work out the obvious. - NZME

‘My fault’ says dog bite victim

Woman avoids jail time

A self-confessed dog lover says she has learnt a massive lesson after getting bitten in the face by a grumpy dog.

Wright was yesterday waiting for surgery in Waikato Hospital after being rushed there by ambulance from the local accident and emergency clinic.

Waikato woman Sara Wright was carrying out some consulting work in a Hamilton cafe when a colleague’s mother brought in her beloved pooch.

“I was at work and I am dog mad, absolutely dog mad. One of my colleague’s mums came in with a dog and it was sitting outside ... It was a beautiful big bulldog and I was just chatting with them and patting it and I went to say goodbye to it and patted it again and it bit my face.”

The bite went right through the left and right side of her top lip

and part of her nose.

She then screamed, put her hand over her face and ran inside.

“I had injections in my face to numb it when I came to hospital ... and that wasn’t pleasant.”

As for what she wanted to see happen with the dog, she said she took full blame and didn’t want it put down.

“I know how much [owner] loves that dog, it’s her pride and joy. You could tell the dog was better looked after than she is, if you know what I mean, so there is no way that I am going to do anything about it.

Wright, a chef and owner of Serves You Wright catering, said the family offered to discuss the possibility of putting him down but she wasn’t having a bar of it.

“I don’t even know how animal control were notified, because it

wasn’t me ... but they just wanted a record of what happened to put on file.

“Basically it’s my fault, I shouldn’t have been so complacent with it. I learnt a big lesson.

I thought I was a dog person but you can’t predict the behaviour of them, it doesn’t matter what breed, really.”

She said her colleague was relieved to know the dog wouldn’t be put down.

As for what she’s learned out of the incident, she said she would be more careful in future.

“I’m never going to assume that I’ve got an amazing connection with them again. I always just thought the best of them and never believed that one would hurt me because I loved them so much. I will never assume that again, it’s a massive lesson.”

A Hamilton woman got so angry with her two children that she locked one out in the cold as a form of punishment and hit the other with a heater.

On another occasion, 38-yearold Sylvia Penney got so angry with what she found on her daughter’s browsing history of her tablet that she hit her so many times with a coat hanger that it broke.

Penney’s offending stretched over a six-year period and she appeared for sentencing in the Hamilton District Court yesterday.

Her lawyer, Satya Pandaram, said although his client had already accepted a sentence indication of community detention and community work, she had spent the last month in custody after failing to appear in court.

He submitted that the time

served would be the equivalent of the community detention sentence and suggested one instead of community work.

The idea wasn’t opposed by crown prosecutor Trelise Needham Penney’s mother-in-law told Judge Noel Sainsbury that she wished to work with probation to try and negotiate access to her children.

Judge Sainsbury said although he couldn’t guarantee that would happen, “that’s my expectation”.

The judge accepted Penney had no previous convictions and was aware she needed assistance to ensure the abuse never happened again.

He sentenced her to 150 hours’ community and 15 months’ intensive supervision coupled with several special conditions.

Healthcare bill sinks, again Republicans have been left scrambling to salvage their years-long campaign promise to repeal and replace Obamacare with their latest plan sinking in the Senate.

The setback has rattled financial markets and sent the US dollar to a 10-month low.

It also leaves the party to weigh a repeal-only strategy to buy more time for a possible replacement plan later with President Donald Trump vowing to return with a new proposal.

“As I have always said, let ObamaCare fail and then come together and do a great healthcare plan. Stay tuned!” he tweeted.

Senate Republicans’ second attempt at a healthcare bill collapsed as two more senators refused to back it.

The failure spelled uncertainty for the president’s other top agenda items of tax reform and an infrastructure overhaul, leaving him without any major legislative accomplishments six months into his tenure.

President Donald Trump blasted congressional Democrats and "a few Republicans" over the collapse of the GOP effort to rewrite the Obama health care law.

Some Republican and Democratic US governors, who help oversee the joint federalstate Medicaid program for the poor as well as private health insurers, have balked at Republican efforts to undo a law that expanded Medicaid in some states and reduced the number of uninsured people.

Republicans in Congress had hoped to finish with healthcare before an upcoming August recess so they could tackle a wide-ranging rewrite of the US tax code in September.

But their failure exposed the sharp divide within their own ranks.

A similar version of the Senate bill passed the House in May but legislation must pass both chambers for Trump to sign into law.

EastEnders star injured Paul Nicholls is reportedly recovering in hospital after being trapped in a Thai jungle for three days, following a fall that smashed his leg. The former EastEnders star spent 72 hours trapped in a rock pool with his injuries, after he plummeted from the top of a jungle waterfall. His ordeal only ended thanks to an eagleeyed local, who raised the alarm when they spotted his motorbike abandoned at the beauty spot on the island of Koh Samui. Rescue teams spent hours hacking through undergrowth before finding him semi-conscious and suffering from hypothermia, he had been unable climb out of the water because of a busted right leg.

An official from the Ministry Justice and Human Rights announced yesterday that Hizbut’s legal status had been revoked in order to protect national unity.

Hundreds of choir boys abused At least 547 members of a prestigious Catholic boys’ choir in Germany were physically or sexually abused between 1945 and 1992, according to a report released yesterday.

Allegations involving the choir in Regensburg, which was run for 30 years by Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI’s elder brother, were among a spate of revelations of abuse by Roman Catholic clergy in Germany that emerged in 2010.

In 2015, lawyer Ulrich Weber was tasked with producing a report on what happened.

The report said that 547 boys at the Domspatzen’s school “with a high degree of plausibility” were victims of physical or sexual abuse, or both. It counted 500 cases of physical violence and 67 of sexual violence, committed

by a total of 49 perpetrators.

At the choir’s pre-school, “violence, fear and helplessness dominated” and “violence was an everyday method,” it said.

“The whole system of education was oriented toward top musical achievements and the choir’s success,” the report said.

The report’s authors said that they checked the plausibility of 591 potential victims’ cases.

The choir was led from 1964 to 1994 by Benedict’s brother, the Rev Georg Ratzinger.

Ratzinger has acknowledged slapping pupils after he took over the choir, though such punishments were commonplace in Germany at that time. He also said he was aware of allegations of physical abuse but he was not aware of sexual abuse.

The report faulted Ratzinger “in particular for ‘looking away’ or for failing to intervene.”

It also cited criticism by victims of the Regensburg diocese’s initial efforts to investigate past abuse. It said that the bishop at the time the allegations surfaced, Gerhard Ludwig Mueller, bears “clear responsibility for the strategic, organizational and communicative weaknesses” of those efforts.

Cardinal Mueller became the head of the Vatican’s doctrine office in 2012. Pope Francis recently removed him from that job.Current Bishop Rudolf Voderholzer has already announced plans to offer victims compensation of between 5,000 and 20,000 euros each by the end of this year.

After learning Jennifer is quadriplegic who injured her spinal cord in a car accident and that she had setup a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the adapted vehicle, the Loyalty hitmaker gifted her a new set of wheels and a new lease on life.

Jennifer has been to see the rapper eight times and is a massive supporter.

Landlords need to look at the bigger picture Matt Markham

he joys of finding a new property. A stressful, yet somewhat exhilarating feeling.

As house prices come down, there’s an influx of properties up for rent around the Ashburton District. But they all come with stipulations, requirements and rules. Some of which cancel out more than half of the potential applicants.

You can’t have pets. You can’t smoke. You need to pay more than $2000 just to get into the house in the first place.

It’s all getting a little out of control.

So, if you’re a landlord looking to rent out a property – be reasonable, be fair and most of all, be understanding.

Just because you might have been burned by a lousy tenant in the past doesn’t necessarily mean you are going to be burned again.

A Trade Me search yesterday revealed that there were more than 50 properties available in the Ashburton District.

A good portion of them don’t want anyone having a pet. How much damage can a cat do? Or a well-trained dog? Seriously.

We are too busy worrying about the things that might go wrong in life that we don’t look at the bigger picture.

What if that person you are denying an opportunity to is a model tenant. They pay their rent on time each week, they take pride and care in your property and their only vice is that Mr Whiskers sleeps all day and occasionally might bring a bird inside to show Mum and Dad just how clever he is?

Is that really a good enough reason to stop someone from moving into your property?

Then there’s the cost. Let’s say the average rental price is around the $300 mark.

Just to secure the property as yours and then to move into it, you are looking at paying four weeks’ rent for a bond and two weeks in advance, plus potentially a letting fee if you are going through a company.

That’s more than $2000 straight up.

Not many can afford that in the current economic climate.

So maybe it’s time that we caught up with things a little and started looking at the bigger picture and more the positive things than the negative ones.

Who knows, we might just start getting good results.

YOUR VIEW New civic centre and library As a ratepayer would the mayor and councillors kindly explain to me and other very interested parties the reasons behind buying and destroying good property 100 metres from the existing buildings so they can build new council offices and library even though there is more than ample space on the current site.

This is a total waste of ratepayers’ money and could you please get individual council members’ response to this request on their individual reasons.

As a pensioner already with a rates demand of $2400 on a house valued at $250,000 compared with a house at Orewa, Auckland valued at $1,000,000 which only has a rate demand of $1000 I am disgusted that the council should be wasting our money again.

I have lived in Ashburton since 1962 and can say honestly that I am a daily cyclist and that the roads in Ashburton are in the worst condition I have ever experienced.

PO Box 77 Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel replies: There has been much debate around the council table on the best site for the new combined administration and library building.

After weighing up the community’s views and the options and advice we received from external consultants and council officers, we decided Baring Square East was the best option – a much better one than our current library and administration sites.

It is a very central location that is highly visible, easily accessible, and will help to revitalise the central business district.

Building on the site of the current administration building was the least cost-effective option and would have done nothing to help rejuvenate the CBD. No-one could say we made the decision lightly to go with Baring Square East as a preferred option.

As a new council, we deliberately took our time in making what we think is the best decision for the long-term future of Ashburton.

As mayor, I am excited at what this new development will bring to our district.

Of course, it is not a done deal as yet. We still need to successfully negotiate to buy land to the rear of the former County Council building and two of the three Methodist Church lots on the site, excluding the church. If negotiations are not completed by the end of September 2017, we will need to review our options again.

As it was a joint council decision, to begin negotiations that would allow us to build on the Baring Square East site, I feel confident in replying to you on behalf of the entire council.

To hear individual councillors’ views and how we debate issues, you are more than welcome to attend our council meetings, which are all open to the public.

What a challenge that will be!

Public libraries are as much about people, as they are about books.

If you haven’t spent time at the

library recently, you might be surprised.

At first glance, you will see the traditional library business of books, but look a little further and you will find that every table, seat and often floor space, is filled with people using and charging their digital devices; others may be sitting quietly, enjoying a safe place where they can be part of the community; social and business meetings are taking place; and public internet screens are in constant use.

The present library somehow squeezes all of this in, but the chance to plan a new library with the space and flexibility to do all of this, and so much more, is a great opportunity to give Ashburton a library to take it into the future.

I believe that unless councillors consult widely and think wisely about what 21st century libraries can, and should, be offering, there is a very real chance that the new library will be too small and outdated before it is even built.

Bobby season under way

The bobby calf season is under way for another year and although it is early days, in the central South Island at least it’s on a par with past years.

Grant Bunting, general manager agriculture and livestock at Anzco Foods, said Anzco started chilling bobby calves at its Rakaia plant last week.

“It starts off slowly but at this stage it’s no different to in the past,” he said. “It’s pretty standard.

“It’s probably too early to call in terms of how things will go [for the rest of the season] but pricewise it’s pretty flat compared to last year.”

New regulations introduced last year and some that come into effect on August 1 have influenced this year’s bobby calf market, he said.

Processors are well aware of the new rules, he said, which put restrictions on both bobby calf transport and feed times.

“There’s no excuses and it’s animal welfare more than anything

Grant Bunting else that’s driving the bobby calf market right now.”

Anzco was probably more fortunate than other bobby processors in the central South Island, Bunting said, given it had plants on both sides of the Southern Alps that could take them.

Given the current strong outlook for beef prices there had been speculation that this might have an impact on this season’s bobby calves, with some farmers instead choosing to retain stock.

However, this has yet to influence the amount of calves being supplied to Anzco.

Research shows the giant buttercup weed would cost the dairy industry $592 million a year in lost milksolids revenue if it were to spread across its entire range over the next 20 years.

True cost of weeds higher than expected The true cost of weeds to New Zealand’s agricultural economy is likely to be far higher than previous research would suggest, according to a new study funded by AgResearch.

AgResearch and Scion scientists worked with economists from Lincoln University’s Agribusiness and Economics Research Unit to review the available published research on the costs of weeds to New Zealand’s productive land (for the pastoral, arable and forestry sectors). That review reached a conservative overall estimate of $1.658 billion a year (based on 2014 costs).

“The research on weed costs done previously used differing approaches and the numbers were sometimes outdated or contained guesswork,” AgResearch principal scientist Dr Graeme Bourdôt said.

“In addition, the estimate of $1.658b only covers the few weed species – 10 of the 187 pasture weeds, some arable land weeds and forestry weeds – that have been the subject of research into their impacts.

“The focus has largely been on the loss of production. The substantial costs of weed control, such as the use of herbicides, was not always considered.

“Given all of these limitations, the true cost of the weeds to the agricultural sector is likely to be much higher than the $1.658b

estimate.”

The study looked at the economic impact of some of the more widespread and destructive weed species such as gorse, broom, yellow bristle grass and Californian thistle.

“We also developed a dynamic approach for estimating the potential costs of weeds that have not yet realised their potential range in New Zealand, taking account of possible rates of spread, maximum geographic extent and changes in consumer prices for agricultural products,” Bourdôt said.

“This dynamic approach applied to the giant buttercup weed in dairy pastures indicates that this weed alone would cost the dairy industry $592 million per year in lost milksolids revenue if it were to spread across its entire range over the next 20 years.”

“New Zealand has one of the highest levels of invasion by introduced plant species in the world, and there has always been a shortage of information when it comes to their economic costs on productive land.

“Knowing more about these costs is important to developing cost-effective ways to tackle weeds and in quantifying the benefits of research aimed at keeping us ahead of the game.”

New animal welfare regulations Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy says 46 new animal welfare regulations will be developed this year.

“Changes we made to the Animal Welfare Act in 2015 have allowed us to create directly-enforceable regulations. This has given the act more teeth, and creates more tools to deal with the mistreatment of animals,” he said.

“The 46 regulations cover stock transport, farm husbandry, companion and working animals, pigs, layer hens and the way animals are accounted for in research, testing and teaching.

“These follow the Young Calf and Live Animal Export regulations which we fasttracked and introduced last year.

“These regulations contributed to a reduction of more than 50 per cent in mortality rates for bobby calves during the 2016 season.”

Last year, the Ministry for Primary Industries consulted on 91 animal welfare regulations and received more than 1400 submissions from a wide range of individuals and organisations, all with different

Stink bug agreement signed An agreement has been signed to address one of the biggest threats facing New Zealand’s horticultural sector.

At last week’s Horticulture NZ conference in Tauranga, a number of horticulture sector groups and the Government came to an agreement on how to reduce the potential impact of an incursion of the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), which if it occurred would threaten the livelihoods of a number of primary sector producers.

BMSB Council chairman, Alan Pollard, said the agreement means primary industry organisations and the Ministry for Primary Industries can work together to prepare for and reduce the impacts of the pest.

“While BMSB populations have never taken hold in New Zealand, it’s a sneaky pest that spreads fast and has been caught

at the border on passengers and in imported goods many times,” Pollard said.

“If given the opportunity, BMSB has the potential to cause billions (of dollars) of damage to the New Zealand economy.

They attack a wide range of New Zealand crops such as grapes, kiwifruit, apples, and stonefruit, corn and many other valuable crops.”

The agreement, under the Government Industry Agreement for Biosecurity readiness and response (GIA) sets out operational requirements for readiness and response activities and cost-sharing arrangements between Government and affected industries in the management of the BMSB threat. It enables joint decisionmaking between the parties and sees them all working together to reduce the impacts of the pest to the affected industries.

perspectives on animal welfare.

MPI will now focus on having the next 46 regulations ready to be delivered by the end of this year and to come into effect before October 2018.

The delayed lead-in time will enable farmers, processors, transporters and others to ensure that their systems are up and running before the new regulations take effect. The remaining regulations that were consulted on last year will be considered in a third package of work in 2018, for introduction in 2019.

“In 2014, New Zealand’s animal welfare system was ranked first-equal out of 50 countries assessed by the global animal protection charity World Animal Protection,” Guy said.

“Animal welfare is extremely important to New Zealanders and to our international consumers. We take good care of our animals, but one bad incident can damage our reputation.

“That’s why these new regulations are important, providing greater enforcement and helping protect animals.”

By Grant Bradley A survey shows New Zealand hotels need to up their game to attract more Chinese tourists.

While hotels in this country are focusing their efforts on social media and marketing programmes in a bid to attract Chinese travellers, the investment in on-site services for Chinese guests has decreased, according to the Hotels.com data, with less than 1 per cent spending more than $10,000.

The Hotels.com study identified key areas where hotels could improve their services.

These include: ■■ In-house Mandarin speaking staff was ranked number one by travellers but was low on the list for New Zealand hoteliers, with only 17 per cent offering the service and 8 per cent planning to in the next 12 months.

■■ Chinese payment facilities at hotels, such as Union Pay, rank second for consumers in importance, yet only 12 per cent of NZ hotels currently offer these facilities. Only 18 per cent intend to offer them in the next 12 months.

They also intend to spend 10 per cent more on travel in the next 12 months, with New Zealand ranked number seven for most desired global destination, up five places from 2016.

Chinese travellers spent $US3600 ($4900) on average around the world in the past 12 months. This is slightly below the average spend in New Zealand ($5400) during visits which average 18 days, according to Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment figures.

Cyber attack poses a significant threat to the global financial system, but the Reserve Bank has decided not to introduce more prescriptive requirements at this stage due to the swiftly changing nature of both the threats and the technology, said Reserve Bank head of prudential supervision Toby Fiennes.

“The nature and incidence of cyber risk is unique, meaning that typical approaches to risk management and disaster recovery planning may not be appropriate.

While cyber vulnerabilities can be mitigated, the potential sources of cyber threats and the attack footprint are just too broad, so they can never be eliminated,” Fiennes said in a speech published on the central bank’s website.

“The dynamic cyber environment means that organisations have to be nimble in their ap-

proach to cyber security – focused on outcomes, rather than prescriptive compliance exercises,” he said.

Fiennes said the central bank did not believe prescriptive regulations would appreciably improve the outcome, when the technology and threat landscape are both changing so rapidly. “We will, however, review this policy stance from time-to-time to ensure that it remains appropriate,” he added.

Fiennes said the central bank is focused on mitigating the systemic risks associated with a possible cyber attack. These include a cyber attack on one or more banks, non-bank deposit takers, financial market infrastructures (FMI) or insurers that would lead to a broad loss of confidence in the financial sector; an attack on more or more firms or FMIs that disrupts critical banking and financial services and economic

functions; or an attack that would lead to the outright failure of a large, systemically important financial firm or FMI. He also said the Reserve Bank is closely watching the “emerging wave of ‘digital disruption’ affecting the banking sector related to fintech, including peer-to-peer lending services, electronic wallets, crypto currencies and socalled “open-banking,” among others”.

In the short-term digital disruption may result in new risks and increased instability in the financial system but in the long term, it may improve its efficiency, said Fiennes.

“Looking forward, the Reserve Bank and other regulators will need to make sure the regulatory regime in New Zealand is adaptive should any new business models become systemic, while not unduly harming innovation,” he said.

Allenton Bowling Club Allenton Ladies held their Mid-Winter Christmas Tournament on Friday, July 7.

It was a fine but chilly day with 16 teams taking part.

We played one game of 8 ends before lunch and then in for lovely hot soup and a bread roll. Another game after lunch and then it was decided to cancel the 3rd game as it had become too cold and the mulled wine and Christmas cake were far more inviting! Winners were – 1st - R. Bennett, J. May & B. Beck, 2nd – M. Eder, D. Bruce & L. Spargo, 3rd – L. Chaney, J. Kingsbury & M. Lloyd, 4th – G. Hawkins, H. Goodall & G. Crack A most enjoyable day with lots of raffles, spot prizes and a lovely afternoon tea.

Results from the 5th round of Aussie pairs played on Saturday July 8th were 1st – M. Smallridge & R. Kane – 3 wins & 14 ends, 2nd - M. Anderson & W. Watson – 3 wins & 13 ends, 3rd – B. & S. Holdom – 2 wins & 16 ends Temuka brought 21 players for our biannual match. We played 3 games of 8 ends on a beautiful sunny winter’s day, Allenton being the winner of the trophy by 12 matches to 6 with 3 being drawn.

Catching up with bowling friends was the winner on the day.

Last Friday’s triples were shifted to a beautiful sunny Saturday owing to the rain during the week. 14 teams took part with the Royal Stuff Ups (M. Smallridge, M. Quinn & G. Sparks) being the only 3 winners. 2nd were S. B’s from Rakaia (L. Chaney, M. Lloyd & J. Harris) with 2 wins and a draw. 3rd were Trish’s Treasures (G. Bishop & B. & T Clarke) with 2 wins & 15 ends. There were 4 other teams with 2 wins but less ends – a close competition all round.

Weather permitting Tuesday Roll-Ups will continue each week. Names must be in by 12.45pm for a 1pm start.

A new competition starting Wednesday July 19th and hoping to run for 4 weeks is a Two Bowl Triples Tournament and Aussie Pairs continues on Saturday, so it’s “all go” at the Allenton Bowling Club.

Ashburton Combined Friendship Club First women members inducted into the Ashburton Combined Friendship Club.

Vice-president Errol Kingsbury welcomed and inducted Joan Miles and Doreen Turpie into the Ashburton Combined Friendship Club (formerly a Probus Club dating back to 1983). This was a highlight of the recent July meeting. The club recently became the first Combined Friendship Club, open to both men and women, in Ashburton although combined clubs are common in other centres.

The membership is very positive and welcoming regarding the change. The club aims to stimulate thought, interest and participation in activities for the retired and semi-retired.

Tony confirmed the arrangements for the mid-winter lunch at Bed Rock Cafe on Tuesday July 18. He also outlined a possible bus trip to Mt Hutt.

Errol gave a very thorough presentation on the committee’s thinking on the name change and the affiliation with Friendship NZ Inc. Errol then gave a very humorous mini speech about Porky the auctioneer and the Brown Swiss bull which harked back to his career in the stock and station business.

Our main speaker was John Keast who has a career of more than 40 years in journalism including stints on some wellknown papers.

He outlined the many changes in the newspaper business during his career and explained how many of these have been driven by the advent of computers and the internet.

He spoke about the threats and opportunities he foresaw in the future.

However, the hall was warm and numbers were boosted by family members and guests with everyone enjoying the very entertaining programme which had been compiled by President John.

The afternoon commenced with the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem followed by (1) Some lively tunes by the orchestra. Ashburton MSA Petanque Club While the past few weeks have been quiet for our more competitive players, our club days are more popular than ever with well over 20 and sometimes over 30 taking part creating a great club atmosphere.

We have welcomed nine new members this year and some are already taking part in competitions.

During the winter we still have a practice at 9.30 on a Sunday morning, and recently had a session on basic rules and there was a lot of positive feedback from those who attended.

Eleven of our members took part in the Bastille Day event at Ascot on Saturday with Richard Browne and Paul Tamagushiku from Papanui winning the Trophy.

Rosemary McLaughlin and Shelagh Field came 2nd in the Plate.

Third equal in this was Jonathan Crum with Marjorie Vincent from Papanui, along with Ellen Pithie and Marion Harrison.

Betty King and Wil Nuberg were 3rd = in the consolation. And Rewa Kyle and Fran Hudson from Ascot came 2nd in the Escargot.

The next three weeks are going to be busy starting with 12 members going to Papanui for the Silver Tray challenge. We have good keen teams and hopefully this year we can bring it home.

On Monday July 17 President Peter Thomas welcomed 35 to 40 members to the monthly General Meeting of Grey Power Ashburton.

Peter advised that Federation were lobbying Pharmac to get a subsidy for the shingles vaccine, but it was not available at this time.

Peter then introduced Jo Luxton local representative for the Labour Party. Jo gave a comprehensive outline of her life before moving to the Ashburton district in 1996.

She has a teaching qualification in Early Childhood Education and has started the Headstart Centre in Hinds.

Our monthly Tuesday meeting opened with a welcome to two visitors by President Roger Lake.

After completion of business, Ken Paterson gave us a mini talk. Ken was born in Oamaru where he attended Primary School followed by Waitaki Boys’ High.

The family later moved to Temuka where his father ran a tearooms and bakery.

After finishing High School at Temuka Ken worked in his father’s bakery for some time before selling up and moving to Ashburton where he took over the Mobil Service Station for the next 22 years. In 1985 he shifted to Christchurch where he purchased a dairy.

After 16 years there he retired and 2 years ago returned to Ashburton. Ken has also been involved with Kiwanis, brass bands, operatic groups and the St Mark’s Church choir.

Carl Ruddenklau introduced our main speaker, Ron Smith, who gave us an entertaining talk, illustrated by photos and videos, of his recent tramp along the Great Wall of China. After meeting up in Beijing with a group of fellow trampers from Australia and UK, they spent the next six days making a 100 kilometre walk along the wall.

They had to negotiate steep climbs and at times pick through rubble where the wall had collapsed.

Along the way they stayed overnight in nearby homes. Ron also toured Beijing and viewed the Terracotta Warriors.

Meredith Lowe thanked our speaker and presented him with a bottle of wine, before the meeting closed with the National Anthem.

Cooper, Higginbotham out Quade Cooper has been omitted from Australia’s 38-man training squad announced yesterday for the Rugby Championship and Bledisloe Cup, possibly ending the test career of the flashy, but often unpredictable, playmaker.

The move leaves Bernard Foley as the only specialist flyhalf in the extended squad picked by Wallabies coach Michael Cheika for a series of training camps starting north of Sydney next week.

Kurtley Beale, a utility back who recently returned from England, was recalled to the Wallabies squad for the first time since the 2015 World Cup and is only

other potential No. 10 in the initial group.

Cooper’s omission is his first based on form since former Wallaby coach Robbie Deans left him out of the 2013 British and Irish Lions series.

Cheika did not select any players from the Brumbies, who are hosting a Super Rugby quarterfinal against the Hurricanes on Friday in Canberra.

The squad includes 11 uncapped players.

Backrower Scott Higginbotham, who has played 34 tests for Australia, was one of the other notable omissions.

Paul: Aussies dither over Super Rugby cut

By Gregor Paul Only in Super Rugby could the weakest partner somehow wrestle the pants off the others and hold the entire competition to ransom.

In every other competition, the weakest are left to wither and die.

The strongest survive. The strongest hold the power.

But not Super Rugby, where Australia, having not posted a single victory against a New Zealand side in 2017, are king makers.

Australia, with their only representation in the finals coming through a contractual agreement, hold the power to determine whether Super Rugby will make sense next year or whether it will be an even bigger basket case than it is now.

The Australian Rugby Union had just the one job to do – chop a team from next year’s competition.

Simple enough surely?

The ARU certainly gave that impression back in March. At a meeting in London, it was agreed that South Africa would cut two teams and Australia one to create a 15-team competition in 2018.

The ARU said it was not only committed to axing one of its five teams, but that it would also have no problem doing so quickly.

South Africa made the same commitment, and promptly went home and did what they said they would.

But not Australia. Their big promise remains unfulfilled and, as a result, they now have everyone over a barrell.

It is incredible – an ant control-

ling an elephant – but that’s what it has come to.

Super Rugby is in limbo, until Australia gets its act together.

Super Rugby can’t move forward, can’t put a draw out for next year, or even tell players how many teams will be in the competition and what format it will take, until Australia provides a definitive answer to the question of how many teams it will be running in 2018.

Despite their seemingly bold and unambiguous statement of clarity that they would be cutting a team, nearly four months on and everything now hinges on a legal case.

At the end of this month, the ARU and Western Force will begin an arbitration process that is expected to last for at least a week.

The Force agreed to the hearing, because it felt it was wrong to

ask players, coaches and fans to wait until a scheduled High Court hearing in September.

The club feels it has a binding contract to be supported through to the end of the current broadcast deal in 2020. If the club is proven right and wins its case, what then?

So what will be Sanzaar’s Plan B? The South Africans have already told the Cheetahs and Kings they are out.

But a 16-team competition would be a nonsense. It won’t work on any level.

What about the Brumbies? It would be entirely ridiculous to blade them given them they are the strongest Australian side and the only one to make the playoffs.

But ridiculous is Sanzaar’s staple fare.

Between Romain Poite nightmares and wasted minutes trying to nut out the Super Rugby standings, I had a thought.

Who should receive the Steinlager Salver for outstanding service to rugby when New Zealand Rugby holds their annual awards night in December?

Wayne Smith will no doubt have his backers after significant and worthy service to, in particular, the All Blacks since 1980. But perhaps in another year, Smithy.

For one name springs to mind, Bryan ‘Beegee’ Williams.

If you hang around rugby, rugby circles and rugby people in Auckland – it is my passion as much as a job – you will come across Beegee.

If you visit Mt Albert Grammar School, his alma mater, you will see the No. 1 rugby field now carries his name. It is a singular and rare honour, but one richly deserved.

Beegee was a great All Black, but he was, is and always will be a rugby man. His service to the game did not start and finish with his All Blacks career, storied as it was from 1970-78.

The fact that he was accorded life membership of his beloved Ponsonby club in his early 30s and barely out of his playing days is testament to the work he has done for that famous club and to promote grassroots sport in general. He is now a vice-patron, committee member, sounding board and unofficial ambassador for Ponsonby after serving as director of rugby for several years after he had left his legal career.

Beegee, who lives adjacent to the Cox’s Bay Reserve fields, which house the Ponsonby juniors, still puts out the flags and post paddings each winter Saturday morning.

Let us not forget too his work as technical advisor, initially, then as head coach of Manu Samoa, during the apex of that famous team’s rise on the world stage.

There was a brief stint at the helm of the Hurricanes with his old mate Graham Mourie. Remember too, he was the assistant coach of the 1987-91 Auckland side, fit to rank (from 1987-90 at least) as the greatest provincial juggernaut the world has ever seen.

Beegee’s smiling face and ready handshake can still be found around the traps, be it at Western Springs to watch Ponies or discharging his duties as patron of the Barbarians club at Eden Park.

He was the club president from 2014-15 and president of New Zealand Rugby from 2011-12.

It struck me that Steinlager Salver recognition was long overdue for this man, and some prompting from another passionate rugby man fired the desire to push his case. Some big names of the sport have been accorded the honour: Piney, BJ Lochore, The Needle, Peter Bush, Jock Hobbs, Graham Mourie, Keith Quinn.

Iconic figures, all.

In brief All Blacks play in Lyon The All Blacks 2017 end of season tour schedule is complete, including a midweek match against a French selection in food capital Lyon.

French media have reported the All Blacks will play a French 15 team on November 15, New Zealand time.

The tour will kick off on November 5 with the first game against the Barbarians at Twickenham. A week later they will play France in Paris, and face Lyon’s selection three days after.

Rumours of Porsche’s exit from the World Endurance Championship LMP1 are heating up and the German team is not denying it. The factory outfit employs Kiwi Le Mans 24 Hour winners Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber and is currently leading both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships. “We will make the decision before the end of July,” Porsche LMP1 team principal Andreas Seidl said over the weekend. The camp, held in Burnham, sees 46 young rugby players come together for four days for a variety of activities.

Trans-gender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard has lost a case before the Sports Tribunal of New Zealand to compete at next month’s Pacific Cup International competition in New Caledonia. Hubbard sought permission to attend in an effort to boost her world ranking and push her claims for Games selection.

Conor McGregor’s management team have denied any truth in the rumour that he was knocked out in a sparring session.

The rumours originated from a video interview with former two-weight world champion Jessie Vargas, who allegedly claimed McGregor was knocked out as he trained ahead of his fight against Floyd Mayweather on August 26.

It was mis-reported that Vargas had said McGregor was knocked out by British MMA fighter Bradley Wheeler.

In the video Vargas claimed that “the boxing world is small, man ... He got knocked out in sparring.”

In fact, Vargas was referring to lightweight boxer Brandon Rios, but McGregor’s management have moved to clarify that neither Rios nor Wheeler had sparred with McGregor.

The rumour was quashed when McGregor’s management told Telegraph Sport that “the guy mentioned by Jessie Vargas is Brandon Rios, not Brad Wheeler. Neither have sparred with Conor.”

Brandon Rios also confirmed that he had never sparred with McGregor, insisting that he did not know who he was, nor had he ever met the mixed martial artist.

“My phone’s been blowing up. I’ve been getting texts messages and calls about this.

I’ve never met McGregor, and I don’t know who he is.”

McGregor is crossing over into boxing for a fight with Mayweather, who is 49-0 in an unbeaten career spanning 21 years.

The contest between Mayweather and McGregor looks likely to become the biggest-grossing fight in history.

Southern rivals square off for another tight tussle The Crusaders need only recall the nature of their two wins over the Highlanders this season to know how tough their Super Rugby quarter-final will be.

It might be second versus seventh in terms of the play-off rankings for Saturday’s clash in Christchurch, but Crusaders assistant coach Leon MacDonald stresses that will count for little.

A Highlanders side that have won 10 of their last 11 games will have a point to prove against the hosts, who scraped to the tightest of wins in both southern derbies during the regular season.

It took a late flurry of Crusaders tries to lift them to a 30-27 victory in round two in Dunedin, having trailed 27-6.

More drama followed last month, when Mitchell Hunt’s astounding 47 metre dropped goal in the final act was enough for the home side to prevail 25-22.

MacDonald fully expects their play-off fixture to reach a similar climax.

“What a game of rugby it’s going to be,” he said. “If the last two games are anything to go by, there will be a bit of drama and a cliff hanger.

“It’s just about delivering now, and getting out there and doing the job. We didn’t do it at the weekend, we’re well aware of that.”

MacDonald was referring to the final-round 31-22 loss to the Hurricanes in Wellington, which

Strong comeback just not enough A disastrous opening two rounds ultimately proved to be the undoing of the Paterson Trophy defence for the Ashburton Indoor Bowls side in Nelson at the weekend.

Despite making a massive comeback to see victory within their reach on Sunday morning, the eight-strong team fell short and had to settle for second place.

In the five-round competition, Ashburton started woefully on Friday night, amassing 13 of a possible 36 points to see them sitting second last in the six-team competition.

Saturday morning wasn’t much better with just 16 points from the second round of play leaving the Ashburton side in a perilous posi-

tion. They bounced back in good fashion in the third round with a 33-point haul which saw them go without defeat, picking up victories and three draws from their 14 matches to push them to within striking distance and into third place behind Canterbury and Nelson.

A 22-and-a-half point round on

Saturday night pushed Ashburton into second, 15 points behind Canterbury heading into the last day of play on Sunday morning.

Victories in both of their fours matches on Sunday morning, and defeat for Canterbury in both of their games saw the side in a position to do the unthinkable, but they were unable to finish things

off as strongly as they hoped, eventually finishing on 111½ points behind Canterbury who finished with 116½.

The representative team will head to Timaru this weekend for the annual quadrangular tournament where they tackle sides from Otago, North Otago and South Canterbury.

Cricket war to leave scars – test great

Nationality clause a priority Team New Zealand have indicated they will strengthen the nationality rules for the America’s Cup, confirming yesterday the protocol will contain a “constructed in country” rule as well as a nationality requirement for the competing crews.

But potential challengers will have to wait a couple more months to learn the full details of the next event, with Team New Zealand and challenger of record Luna Rossa announcing yesterday the protocol for the event will be revealed in September.

Emirates Team New Zealand revealed a couple of broader details, confirming the America’s

Cup match and the preceding challenger selection series will be held in Auckland in early 2021 during the New Zealand summer.

They also underlined their intentions to bring back a national element to the event.

“In recognition of the fundamental condition of the Deed of Gift that the Cup be preserved as a perpetual Challenge Cup for friendly competition between foreign countries, the Protocol will contain a ‘constructed in country’ requirement for competing yachts and a nationality requirement for competing crew members,” Team New Zealand

said in a statement yesterday.

The constructed in country rule – one of the underlying principles of the event for many years – has relaxed significantly over the past two editions. This year’s event in Bermuda only required a small portion of the bows be constructed in the country of origin.

All of Oracle Team USA’s boats and componentry for the past two editions have been built at Core Composites in Warkworth.

The statement contained no mention of what class of yacht will be used for the next event.

Luna Rossa boss Patrizio Bertelli is said to strongly favour

a return to monohulls, but the feeling among many of the current crop of America’s Cup sailors is that what Oracle Team USA bosses Russell Coutts and Larry Ellison created with the move to foiling multi-hulls should be preserved.

Given Team NZ won the America’s Cup in foiling catamarans, it would seem counter-productive to throw away the past three years of research and development.

The issue of what class of yacht will be used is expected to be a determining factor in what challengers it attracts to the event.

End-of-year tour will boost All Blacks’ coffers Two non-test matches on the end-of-year tour will allow the All Blacks to tick development and revenue-generating boxes.

After the bumper Lions series, which could net New Zealand Rugby up to $40 million, coffers will be further boosted come November.

In the first outing of their likely five-match tour, the All Blacks meet the Barbarians at Twickenham on November 54 to celebrate the invitational team’s 125th anniversary.

This match alone is expected to see NZ Rugby pocket about

$3.5 million, as it sits outside the test window.

Confirmation is yet to arrive after protracted negotiations around the status of the match, but reports out of France suggested the All Blacks will face a French selection in Lyon on November 15.

Like the Barbarians, a second game in France, coming four days after the All Blacks test in Paris, won’t be agreed without another significant financial windfall for NZ Rugby.

From a development perspective, these matches also al-

low the All Blacks to give fringe players valuable experience, while keeping their paymasters happy. The second game in France means they are likely to play three games in seven days between France and Scotland, necessitating a raft of rotations.

With a 37-man squad, the All Blacks will have plenty of cover.

The scars from the pay war between players and Cricket Australia (CA) will take a long time to heal, test great Mitchell Johnson says.

As talks between CA and the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) continued yesterday, Johnson said the damage had already been done.

“Once it’s all dealt with, I think the player-CA relationship is going to be a struggle,” Johnson told reporters in Sydney.

“I think it’s going to be very ordinary.

“Even if it gets sorted, the damage has already been done.

“There has been big personal insults thrown around about the players being greedy and those kinds of things, which is not the case, and much more.

“The damage has been done so the relationship is going to have to build again.”

CA and the players’ union resumed negotiations yesterday to try to break the impasse in the pay dispute.

The previous Memorandum of Understanding covering player wages expired on July 1, effectively leaving about 230 Australian cricketers unemployed.

The ACA and players subsequently pulled out of a scheduled Australia A tour of South Africa, steadfast in wanting to retain the revenue-sharing model of the past 20 years, while CA wanted to move to a fixed-revenue system.

Johnson feared CA and its chairman David Peever, a former Rio Tinto managing director, were trying to break the players’ union.

“The players have fought so hard, the ACA, for the last 19 years, and got this module that we have in a really good place, and other things as well,” the veteran of 73 Tests said.

“From the CA point of view, I know David Peever, ex-Rio Tinto ... no unions. So that is the thing that concerns me a lot.

“If we lose this battle as players, does then the ACA start getting their legs chopped from underneath them and the players lose the ACA? “That is the scary thing from my point of view.

“Cricket will still go on but I don’t know what sort of input the players will have in the future.”

Johnson said current players were disappointed at public slanging surrounding the stalemate.

“I saw Nathan Lyon this morning and I think he’s as disappointed as everyone,” he said.

“From what he was saying, they (CA and the ACA) are pretty close but then, over the weekend, something happened again.

“The way it has been dealt with in the media, it probably should have been more of a private matter ... it could have been dealt with very differently.”

Sport Legend lives on The Munro name still lives on the California salt flats. Almost half a century after Kiwi speed pioneer Burt Munro set a land speed record for under-1000cc on his modified Indian motorbike, grand-nephew Lee Munro is following his ancestor’s tyre tracks.

Lee is already making a reputation for himself, clocking 300.723km/h to claim a new record for the 1350cc Modified Partial Streamliner-Gas class of bikes.

Despite only seriously giving running a go in the past sixmonths, Ashburton’s Taonga Mbambo has his sights set on leaving New Zealand’s best in his wake.

Mbambo, originally from Zambia, moved to New Zealand when he was eight with his family, with Dunedin being their first home in New Zealand.

They made the move north to Ashburton two years ago, with Mbambo enrolling at Ashburton College, where he is currently in Year 12.

An avid Manchester United fan, football is another strong focus for Mbambo, having represented both Otago and Mid Canterbury on the field.

In the past few months however, it has been on the cross country trail where he has hit the national heights.

Mbambo recently placed sec-

ond at the Canterbury Cross Country Championships, which booked him a place on the sixman Canterbury team that will travel to Auckland later this month for the National Cross Country Championships.

“Hopefully I will finish in the top 20, but to come back with a team medal would be great,” he said.

He showed what he had to offer at the South Island Championships earlier in the year, placing third, while also posting a respectable 43rd out of 225 at the Secondary Schools’ Nationals.

Mbambo said the moment he decided to have a serious go at running was back in March at the Aoraki Secondary Schools’ Athletics, where he broke the 2000m record.

Now, with the help of a coach, he is training six times a week, rain or shine.

The distances he covers var-

ies from day to day, with some being “just 5km” or up to 15 or 16km.

“With the weather it is quite hard to get out sometimes, especially when it is pouring outside,” he said.

With competition tough to come by in Mid Canterbury, the Ashburton College student regularly finds himself making the trip to Christchurch to get as much racing in as possible.

When summer swings around, the focus will switch to the track, with not as many track events being held in the winter.

When it comes to idols, Great Britain’s Olympic running legend Mo Farah tops the list.

As for the future, Mbambo will be heading in to his final year of school next year, with his main sights on a top 20 finish at the national championships, with the ultimate goal of making it in to the New Zealand Cross Country team.

Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson is focused on strengthening his injured knee but coach Stephen Kearney is optimistic he’ll be fit to play within the next month. Scans on Monday revealed he would be sidelined for just six to eight weeks after tearing the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during last Friday’s 34-22 NRL defeat to Penrith. That news came as a welcome relief after initial diagnosis suggested he had suffered season-ending damage to his anterior cruciate ligament.

Lewis Hamilton has hinted he could quit Formula 1 at the end of the season ... or has he? The Mercedes driver declined to definitively rule out he will leave the sport at the end of 2017 F1 season. “I can’t really say what is going to happen six months from now,” said Hamilton. When asked to clarify his remarks, Hamilton stressed: “I love driving and you could say it [retiring] is very unlikely, I’m just saying that you don’t know what frame of mind I am going to be at Christmas time. Hopefully it’s a really good one with a fourth title.”
