The $8.7 million rebuild and refurbishment of Ashburton Hospital will not result in any additional hospital beds. The rebuild of the outpatient’s area and operating theatre, as well as earthquake strengthening of other parts of the hospital, the refurbishment of ward blocks and an extension to the Acute Admitting Area, was announced
in June 2013. The project was originally scheduled to be completed at the end of last year. There are currently a total of 66 beds at Ashburton Hospital, nine in the Acute Admitting Unit (AAU), 21 in Ward 1, 12 in Ward 3, 19 in Ward 6 and five in Maternity. Canterbury District Health Board chief executive director of nursing Mary Gordon said after the refurbish-
ment and rebuild work is finished, that will not change. “The only change will have the day patients (currently in Ward 3) move to a refurbished Medical Day Unit (previously the AAU),” Ms Gordon said.
