No change to bed numbers at hospital

The $8.7 million rebuild and refurbishment of Ashburton Hospital will not result in any additional hospital beds.

The rebuild of the outpatient’s area and operating theatre, as well as earthquake strengthening of other parts of the hospital, the refurbishment of ward blocks and an extension to the Acute Admitting Area, was announced

in June 2013. The project was originally scheduled to be completed at the end of last year.

There are currently a total of 66 beds at Ashburton Hospital, nine in the Acute Admitting Unit (AAU), 21 in Ward 1, 12 in Ward 3, 19 in Ward 6 and five in Maternity.

Canterbury District Health Board chief executive director of nursing Mary Gordon said after the refurbish-

ment and rebuild work is finished, that will not change.

“The only change will have the day patients (currently in Ward 3) move to a refurbished Medical Day Unit (previously the AAU),” Ms Gordon said.

Trump heaps scorn on hero status Donald Trump, known for his incendiary rhetoric on the 2016 campaign trail, has lobbed another verbal grenade by dismissing the military record of Senator John McCain, a former prisoner of war. The billionaire businessman, reality TV star and Republican presidential contender said McCain - a decorated aviator who was tortured in a prison camp for five years - did not deserve hero status for his Vietnam War service. “He’s not a war hero,” Trump told a gathering of social conservative activists in the Midwestern state of Iowa. “He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured, OK?” The 69-year-old went on to assert that McCain “graduated last in his class” at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis in the late 1950s. McCain, 78, the 2008 Republican presidential candidate against Democratic rival Barack Obama, was captured during a bombing raid over Vietnam in October 1967. He did not personally react to Trump’s comments, but his daughter, 30-year-old broadcaster Meghan, expressed outrage.

Kiwis prolific Facebookers Golnaz Bassam Tabar says you can never have too many friends - even those you’re never likely to meet. The Auckland communications adviser has more than 2000 friends on the social media platform but only 50 are friends in real life.

The 33-year-old is also among a growing number of New Zealanders whose use of Facebook is surging. A new survey shows Kiwis are among the world’s most prolific Facebookers.

Market research firm IDC’s ConsumerScape 360 study showed 16 per cent of Kiwis were constantly logged into Facebook.

They were fourth behind Malaysia (26 per cent), America (19 per cent) and the UK (18 per cent).

Oprah excited about NZ visit Talk show star Oprah Winfrey says she is excited to visit New Zealand for the first time when her multi-city tour, An Evening with Oprah comes to Auckland in December. Announced yesterday, the show will visit Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Auckland. The event is produced by Iconic Entertainment and Dainty Group, presented by Swisse and Sunsuper. The show’s promoters promised that the influential media personality would bring her “personal story and insights to life in a one-of-akind intimate evening”. In a statement, Winfrey said: “I can’t wait to see everyone again in Australia. It is hard to believe it has been five years since I was there, and I look forward to being reconnected, rejuvenated and reinspired about what is possible for our lives. I am also excited to visit New Zealand for the very first time!” Full details for the New Zealand show will be released on July 26. Winfrey, who heads her own cable television network, took her talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, to Australia as part of its final season in 2010, taking 300 audience members with her.

Simon wins Dancing With the Stars The man with the dad-bod has been crowned the winner of Dancing With the Stars. A tearful Simon Barnett and his dance partner Vanessa Cole have been confirmed as the winners of the TV3 reboot of the reality show, beating runner-up Chrystal Chenery to the top spot. “We’ll never forget this - it’s been a rush,” Barnett told the judges after scoring a perfect 30 for his second dance of the night, a “powerful, punchy and masculine” Paso Doble to Eye of the Tiger. Barnett, a radio DJ and former game show host, had a rough start to the competition but kept improving and was regularly among the top scorers each week. The 48-year-old father-of-four also earned attention for his selfconfessed “dad-bod” - his toned, sculpted and shaved chest which he revealed through a selection of low-cut shirts.

After his win, Barnett teared up as he told host Bowden that he owed his win to Cole, and his understanding wife and family, who were cheering him on from the crowd. “The trainers deserve 90 per cent of the credit - the celebrities 10,” he said. “It’s a mission, the training’s 10 hours a day. I’m away from home a lot...” Barnett, who had already cried while talking about his dad’s reaction to his dancing, then paused to sniff again, telling Bowden: “I lost my man card tonight.”

No hint of proposal Max Key has posted a video in which he flaunts his jet-setting, perfectly tanned lifestyle with model girlfriend Amelia Finlayson - but there’s no hint of a marriage proposal. The Prime Minister’s son uploaded the video to YouTube last night, two days after he posted a teaser photo to Instagram, sparking rumours of a proposal. The Instagram photo showed the couple holding hands and gazing into each other’s eyes on a Hawaiian volcano.

But while the “summer paradise” video doesn’t feature a proposal, it does show the couple gallivanting about in New Zealand and Hawaii - often with Amelia in a bikini and Max eschewing a shirt. Max described the video as a “journey into myself and Amelia’s teenage years, filmed over the last few months”. In one shot, Amelia blows a kiss into the camera. In another, Max hits the surf.

Council eyes slice of fibre fund

Methven and Lake Hood are top of the Ashburton District Council’s priority list when it comes to securing Government funding to extend the district’s ultra fast broadband (UFB) connections.

The council has made a pitch for a share of a fund that will

see ultra fast broadband made available to up to 80 per cent of New Zealanders, but it will be up against tough competition from other local authorities for a share of the $210 million pot.

While fibre has been laid to the boundary of both Methven village and Lake Hood, internet connections are mainly through ADSL and a small amount of

VDSL copper wiring. And in the council’s submission, chief executive Andrew Dalziel said this left almost 2000 households with an inferior internet service.

The council is also making a pitch for better mobile phone coverage because the district is pock-marked by mobile black spots. Good mobile coverage was critical for tourists needing

to use a GPS and for emergency services to respond to callouts in more remote areas, Mr Dalziel said.

Federated Farmers has backed up the call for improved cellphone coverage because of the increasing reliance by farmers on digital technology, particularly around irrigation.

To enhance its chances of

gaining a share of the fibre fund, the council is prepared to streamline its consenting process for suppliers of both UFB and rural broadband initiative (RBI2) backhaul fibre. This will include approving shallow trenching consents where appropriate and considering consents for UFB infrastructure on existing poles.

Bargain find uncovers old family photos

No change in bed numbers at hospital

It looked like an ordinary photo frame - a nice second-hand find at a bargain price. However for one Hakatere woman, it was what the frame was hiding that was far more intriguing.

The copper photo frame caught the eye of Sheryl Millar at Wastebusters a couple of months ago.

She took it home, and for a while thought nothing more about it.

However when she decided to open the back of the frame she discovered several old photographs and a postcard, which appear to date back to World War One. One of the photos shows two soldiers dressed in their uniforms, while the others appear to be family snaps. A postcard, which appears to have been sent to Gore, was also inside.

The discovery left Ms Millar shocked.

“If that was my family, I wouldn’t expect something I loved to be recycled,” she said.

After some deliberations she took the photos back to Wastebusters.

She hopes they will be reunited with family members of those shown in the photos.

These patients are currently being looked after in Ward 3 but after the new surgical suite is built, Ward 6 will move to the refurbished Ward 3 site and therapy services will shift into the old Ward 6 space.

“These changes will be a great improvement, which both staff and patients can look forward to,” Ms Gordon said.

The first stage of the refurbishment and rebuild work is now complete, with Ward Block C’s roof replaced and the exterior painted. The next stage is to begin construction of the new theatre, once the area is declared asbestos free. Following that, strengthening on Ward Block D and minor interior work on Ward Block C will begin.

All work is due to be finished by the middle of next year.

Elderly woman dies in Auckland house fire

By KirSty JoHNStoN Neighbours tried to rescue an elderly lady from an Auckland house fire but the flames “were just too big”, they said.

The woman, believed to be in her 80s, died in the blaze in Melton Road, Mt Wellington, early yesterday.

She lived alone in the house and was extremely private, neighbour Survin Chaudhary

told the New Zealand Herald.

The family had been up all night watching as the fire destroyed the home.

“We woke around 2am, all I heard was glass breaking. I woke my husband and said someone had broken into the car,” Mrs Chaudhary said.

“When we opened the curtains we saw smoke and fire coming through the windows of her house.”

She said the smoke began pouring in their open window too.

“I grabbed the kids and ran down the driveway, and called the Fire Service from the street,” she said.

“My husband ran up to see if he could do anything but it was just too big, the flames were too big.

“And things were bursting inside the house, exploding. But

we were so worried about the poor lady being in there alone.”

Mrs Chaudhary said the woman lived alone, and family visited only occasionally.

“It’s so sad. I’ve never seen anything in my life like that.”

The Fire Service is yet to determine the cause of the blaze.

Fire communications shift manager Scott Osmond said it had received multiple reports of the fire at the house at 2.45am.

The house was well ablaze when fire crews arrived on the scene.

After the fire had been extinguished, the deceased woman was found inside the house, Mr Osmond said.

One fire truck and crew remained at the scene, and an investigation into the cause of the fire would continue throughout the day.

Mind yourself at the gym

Fitness and gym related injuries that resulted in an ACC claim have nearly trebled, prompting a warning to be careful and stay safe while exercising.

New ACC data shows claims for injuries sustained in a gym or during fitness training in the district have jumped from where they were in 2010.

Then, 40 claims were made for fitness and gym related injuries. They cost about $8000.

Claims had nearly trebled by last year, with 111 people sustaining gym related injuries at a cost of $58,576.

A spokeswoman for ACC said the increased number of claims were not due to fitness and gym training becoming more hazardous; it was was likely more

people are getting active.

EA Networks Centre gym supervisor Anna Johnson said people need to be sensible, and seek advice when needed, when working out.

Ms Johnson said the best thing for people to do to avoid injury is ask someone who knows what they’re doing.

“It’s pretty much just use the professionals and get their

advice,” she said. “Make sure [you] get an assessment done and a programme written by an instructor.

“Then if you get any niggles, right from the start as soon as they start to feel something make sure they talk to somebody and get some advice.”

Warming up and cooling down are also important, Ms Johnson said.

Three killed on roads Three people lost their lives on New Zealand’s roads at the weekend. And, in one crash, a truck lost a load of beer.

The weekend started in tragic fashion late on Friday afternoon, when 78-year-old Paul Potama, of Tangimoana, was killed in a single-car crash near the town, west of Palmerston North.

Police are still investigating and the death has been referred to the coroner, but it appears the car Mr Potama was driving crashed into a power pole near the intersection of Tangimoana and Rosina roads.

A few hours later, in the early hours of Saturday morning, a motorcyclist died on Baverstock Road in Hamilton.

Police said they believed the 30-year-old man had fled officers earlier in the night.

His name has not yet been released.

Another motorcyclist died yesterday in a crash south of Auckland.

Few details were immediately available and police said it was not known if any other vehicle was involved or when the crash happened.

Emergency services were yesterday at the crash scene on North Road about 5km north of Clevedon.

There, they found a motorcycle and its rider down a bank.

Also south of Auckland in the early hours of yesterday, another crash left hundreds of bottles of beer broken and strewn across State Highway 25 after a truck and car collided.

Both drivers were seriously injured and flown to Waikato Hospital by helicopter. A passenger in the car received moderate injuries.

Woman located Police have now located a 49-yearold Australian woman who was reported missing in the West Auckland on Saturday. Elaine Jackson was reported missing in the Riverhead area. She was seen by an off duty police officer and is now safe.

Trains replaced Auckland Transport is warning passengers of potential beddingin glitches after it replaces diesel trains this morning with electrics on all lines from Papakura and Swanson to Britomart. The council body says running times this month have improved on poor punctuality and reliability suffered by passengers in May and June, and expects more progress once it is no longer lumbered by maintenance problems with its elderly diesel fleet and crew shortages exacerbated by training demands. Mayor Len Brown is hailing today’s completion of the electrification roll-out as “the start of a revolutionary era for public transport”.

Body found Police found the body of missing man Murray Teece in the Waimea River on Saturday. Searchers found Mr Teece’s van in the river about 5pm. A body located in the vehicle was later identified as that of Mr Teece, 73, police said. The vehicle was recovered about 3m upstream from the Appleby Bridge about 7.30pm on Saturday night. Police said the death had been referred to the coroner.

All eyes – everywhere – are on Methven.

The area’s scenery, weather and traffic can be seen from anywhere in the world now that a downtown live timelapse webcam is up and running.

The live-stream camera updates every few minutes to display a full 180 degree panorama.

Methven Blue and Brown pub marketing manager Karyn Robertson said the webcam

was initially meant to be used as a weather camera for the Canterbury Weather Updates website.

It quickly became much more than that.

The website offered the service to provide content for television news weather, online weather and mapping sites, and the likes of Google Maps.

The town’s pubs were quick to see the benefits and decided to fully fund the camera purchase and installation, Ms Robertson said.

“Then the Ashburton Dis-

trict Council kindly allowed the use of their building for the camera location and Contact Physio put up with several disruptions during the planning stages and installation,” she said.

Blue and Brown pub owners Debbie Taylor and Trev den Baars said they were “stoked” to see the webcam finally go live.

“It’s fantastic, just awesome,” said Ms Taylor.

Bag recycling scheme ‘not enough’ A new scheme to recycle soft plastic bags is positive but doesn’t do enough to prevent plastic pollution, the Greens say.

The Government-funded initiative would see drop-off points established at shops and supermarkets, and a new recycling plant in Auckland with capacity to recycle a range of soft plastics including shopping bags, bread bags, frozen

food bags and food wrap.

Environment Minister Nick Smith said the initiative would be funded from the government’s Waste Minimisation Fund with a $700,000 grant to the Packaging Forum to trial the drop-off service, and a $510,000 grant to Astron Plastics Group which will establish the new dry-cleaning facility.

Dr Smith said the new

scheme would allow plastics not currently able to be collected by kerbside recycling to be re-used.

Green Party waste spokeswoman Denise Roche said the scheme wouldn’t fix the problem of plastic bags in waterways and on beaches, because it wouldn’t reduce the number of bags used.

The elderly man who died in a crash in Manawatu on Friday has been identified. He was Paul Potama, 78, of Tangimoana. Mr Potama’s car crashed into the pole near the intersection of Tangimoana and Rosina roads near Bulls about 4pm. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Police said the investigation into the cause of the crash was ongoing, and the death had been referred to the coroner.

‘Robust’ review The Corrections Minister has announced how a “robust and thorough” review over footage of inmates engaging in banned behaviour in New Zealand prisons.

Over the past few days, video footage has emerged which apparently shows prisoners at Mt Eden Corrections Facility fighting and engaging in other activities that are banned inside New Zealand prisons. An internal investigation into these events is being carried out by Serco, which runs the remand facility. Police have also been advised and may conduct their own investigations.

Corrections Minister Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga has now asked Corrections to carry out a robust and thorough review.

Settled weather on its way

By Jimmy Ellingham Settled weather is on its way as students head back to class this week after a southerly sting brought snow, ice and terrifyingly strong winds to parts of the country at the weekend.

The bitterly cold and stormy weather is forecast to extend into today, with strong southwesterly winds, showers and even snow.

But a high hovering over New Zealand for the rest of the week should bring fine and settled weather sure to see school pupils, freshly back from the school holidays, gazing out classroom

Its head weather analyst Philip Duncan said by Friday and Saturday, a strengthening northwest flow would push across the South Island and lower North Island, when the high departed to the Pacific Ocean and a rain band would arrive from the Tasman Sea. Mr Duncan said Aucklanders should expect to stay dry from tomorrow until Thursday, before cloud moved in, eventually bringing showers on Sunday.

The weekend weather bomb hit hard on Saturday, but gusty winds also proved damaging in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Power line crews worked throughout the day to restore electricity to hundreds of Powerco customers in Bay of Plenty and Coromandel.

Northland was hit with two bouts of bad weather within 12 hours, brining a rare 170km/h wind gust to the Bay of Islands.

Meanwhile, in Mount Maunganui, a woman was collected

by a tornado and slammed into a tree on Saturday.

Sidetrack Cafe owner PetraLee Osbourne went outside to rescue furniture when she was blown off her feet.

“The next thing I knew I got swept up by the tornado. It was quite terrifying actually. I didn’t think it was a tornado until I was being blown across the road,” she told the Bay of Plenty Times.

Overnight snow in Dunedin made the southern city’s roads treacherous yesterday, with local police reporting about 10 incidents of cars sliding on black ice into parked vehicles.- NZME

Rudd back behind bars

By JamiE morton AC/DC rocker Phil Rudd is behind bars again, little more than a week after being convicted and sentenced to eight months’ home detention.

The 61-year-old drummer was arrested at his Tauranga home on Saturday night and is being held in custody.

He is set to appear in Tauranga District Court this morning.

It is understood prostitutes were present at Rudd’s home at the time of his arrest.

The nature of the arrest is unclear and it is not known whether Rudd will face any fresh charges when he appears in court again.

Bay of Plenty police have refused to comment on the arrest, with a spokesperson telling the New Zealand Herald she could not discuss individual cases.

Also unclear is whether the arrest could jeopardise an appeal lodged by Rudd’s lawyer, Craig Tuck, against Rudd’s sentencing and conviction, or the sentence itself that Rudd received on July 9 after admitting to charges of threatening to kill an employee, and for methamphetamine and cannabis found in his home during a police raid last year.

The last time Rudd was in court, Judge Thomas Ingram warned the rocker that he would go to prison if he breached the terms of his sentence, which confined him to his waterfront home, subjected him to 24-hour monitoring and prohibited him from taking any drugs not prescribed to him.

Cemetery house reduced to rubble PHOTO JOSEPH JOHNSTON 170715-JJ-010

Over the years it has been home to several families but this week the sexton’s house at the Ashburton cemetery was demolished.

A sexton was employed by the Ashburton District Council to serve as both a grave digger

and as cemetery superintendent and while a life with gravestones for neighbours might not be a place of choice for many, decades of youngsters called the cemetery their home.

When the long-serving sexton Ron Chapman retired the

cemetery house was rented. It then served as a tea room for cemetery staff before becoming a store shed.

Eventually its condition deteriorated to a point where it’s only fate was a date with the bulldozer.

That date arrived last week and the elderly house was demolished.

While no definite use has been planned for the site, in the council’s cemetery development plan it is tagged as a memorial garden.

Small lift for Labour Party in the polls Labour’s gamble in using real estate data to highlight Chinese property buyers in Auckland has so far not paid off in the polls - the party has lifted by just 1 percentage point in the first poll since it released the figures.

Support for Labour in the One News Colmar Brunton poll was at 32 per cent, up 1 point

since May. National was on 47 per cent, down 1 point. The Green Party was up three to 13 per cent and NZ First was steady on 7 per cent.

The polling started on July 11 - the same day Labour’s data was published in the New Zealand Herald.

Labour leader Andrew Little has defended using the figures

after Labour was criticised for race-based politics.

Support for Mr Little as preferred Prime Minister dropped by one point to 8 per cent.

Prime Minister John Key’s support also dropped down to 40 per cent from 44 in May. Some commentators said Labour was trying for the ‘Orewa effect’ - a reference to Nation-

al’s boost in the polls after former leader Don Brash speech against what he saw as preferential treatment for Maori in 2004.

Mr Little denied he was disappointed and believed it was too early for its overseas buyers campaign to have had an impact.

Rotary party well attended Yesterday, for the 65th year in a row, two local organisations got together for an afternoon of fun and games.

The Rotary Club of Ashburton held its annual ‘party for the blind’ for members of Ashburton’s Blind Foundation at the Seniors’ Centre.

A group of tiny Mid Cantabrians and their parents took part in an Ashburton-based infant massage class held at Allenton School over the weekend, run by infant massage instructor Leanne Hunter.

The class was the first of five, and Ms Hunter said she was pleased to see such a great turnout.

“We had four dads and eight mums, it was really nice,” she said.

Infant massage has a number of benefits, not only can it help parents to bond with their babies, it can also help infants relax and sleep better, especially those suffering from colic, Ms Hunter said.

T

he way in which the Government interacts with and responds to the regions will be in even greater focus as rural centres prepare for what will likely be years of tougher times.

The dramatically reduced dairy payout threatens to affect much more than the dairy sector and, as payments dwindle and creditor lists grow, some provinces will struggle.

Over previous months, commentators have warned even the most diversified rural economies – economies such as our own – face a difficult five years of plateau and recovery.

The knock-on effects of reduced dairy-fuelled spending will throw an even greater emphasis on the productive parts of the economy that keep ticking over in the face of a downturn.

In Mid Canterbury, this refocusing is not as simple as expecting the arable sector to grow and sell more, or the building and manufacturing sectors to produce more highvalue jobs.

We can hope all we want, but it is a simple truth that losing hundreds of millions of dollars from one part of our economy will limit growth in some of the areas that we need kept going.

A chunk of the Labour Party caucus, in Ashburton last week, was asked how they or any other political leadership would encourage future-proofing in provinces such as ours.

They said the regions ought to be able to tell the Government what they need to make the most of what they have.

Top down approaches – used by successive governments – do not work.

It is arguable that the regions have plenty of ways to engage with government, through everything from the Mayors’ Taskforce for Jobs to direct approaches to ministries and ministers.

Equally, it is arguable that many of our country’s regional successes are down to individuals, councils and economic development agencies doing what is best for their circumstances.

This worked well while the market worked well. But now, regions that have been mapping their own course need to make sure the government knows what they need to prepare for the future.

y experience in chatting to people around our region is that they generally care about the quality of Government services delivered in our community.

Constituents tell me they want to know that their children are achieving at school.

They want to see the Government tackling crime and looking after the vulnerable in our community.

They care that our health system treats patients promptly and effectively.

Those same people are also taxpayers. They want to know that the public sector is spending money carefully and on services that make a difference.

Three years ago the Prime Minister set 10 challenging targets for the public service to achieve over the next few years.

These targets are focused on complex issues such as welfare dependency, crime, child abuse, and educational achievement.

Some of these are extremely difficult targets but we believe in challenging our public services to get better results from the more than $70 billion we spend each year.

So far we are tracking well.

We have more young people achieving higher qualifications, welfare dependency has fallen, and Kiwis are doing more of their government transactions online.

The Government is achieving record results in health. Since the targets were introduced the proportion of immunised 8-month olds has increased from 84 per cent to 92.9 per cent and there has been a 14 per cent drop in people being hospitalised for the first time with rheumatic fever.

We want all children to leave school with the skills they need to reach their potential in the modern economy. This approach is working, as demonstrated by the fact that all three better public service targets for education have showed meaningful progress over the last three years.

We also want New Zealanders to feel safe. Since June 2011, total crime, violent crime and youth crime have dropped 17.6

per cent, 9.1 per cent and 37.3 per cent respectively – with the rate of reoffending dropping by 9.6 per cent.

This is the lowest crime rate since 1978 and means that there were around 64,000 fewer crimes in the past year than in June 2011.

While progress is being made across all targets, some are harder to achieve than others.

For example, the previously increasing trend for assaults on children has been successfully flattened, but more needs to be done to see it reduced.

We deliberately set ourselves

challenging targets. We knew that in the early years we were likely to see strong progress as we tackled the low-hanging fruit.

Now we have to concentrate on tackling the more stubborn figures. We’ll do this by being more targeted with our approach, including our crossagency plan to combat family violence.

Our challenge is to keep progressing. There’s still a lot of work to do and the Government will continue to focus on the things that matter to New Zealanders.

90 killed as bomb guts town

By Karim aBou merhi Iraq is mourning at least 90 dead after one of the deadliest car bombs in its bloody history ripped through a busy market north of Baghdad.

The suicide attack by the Islamic State jihadist group came as the country marked Eid al-Fitr, the feast that ends the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

Residents recounted scenes of horror in the aftermath of the weekend’s attack, in which officials said at least 15 children were among the dead.

Muthanna Saadoun, a municipal employee who drives a street sweeper, used his truck to help put out the fires that the blast caused in the market area.

“People were burning in their cars because no ambulances or fire engines were able to reach them,” the 25-year-old said.

IS said the suicide attacker had three tonnes of explosives in his vehicle.

The blast left a huge crater in the main street of Khan Bani Saad, only 20 kilometres from Baghdad’s northern outskirts,

Germanwings families turn down compo offer Families of Germans killed in the crash of a Germanwings jet in the French Alps have turned down the airline’s compensation offer, demanding a higher amount of at least 100,000 euro ($NZ166,000).

The death toll from an attack on two military centres in Tennessee has jumped to five, following the death of a US sailor. The US Navy said yesterday a petty officer succumbed to wounds he sustained in Thursday’s shootings in Chattanooga. The Navy did not identify the sailor, but relatives named him as Petty Officer Randall Smith, a father of three daughters who had recently re-enlisted and transferred to Chattanooga. Four Marines also died in the attack before the gunman, 24-year-old Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez, a naturalised US citizen born in Kuwait, was killed in a shootout with police.

Cosby paid women Bill Cosby says he paid women after having sex with them and went to great lengths to hide his behaviour and the payments from his wife. The New York Times has reported the revelations after obtaining a copy of a transcript from a deposition Cosby gave a decade ago. The 78-year-old comedian was testifying under oath in a lawsuit by a former Temple University employee, Andrea Constand, who says he molested her. He says he offered to pay for Constand’s education and had paid other women after they had sex with him. He also admits he funnelled money to some of the women through his agent so his wife wouldn’t find out.

Palace mulls legal action over Nazi film Buckingham Palace is considering legal action over leaked footage that shows the Queen as a child performing a Nazi salute with her family.

The Palace has launched an inquiry into how the 17-second black and white film came into the hands of The Sun newspaper.

It shows the Queen, aged six or seven, join the Queen Mother and her uncle Prince Edward in raising an arm in salute as she played alongside her younger sister, Princess Margaret.

It is understood that depending on the outcome of the investigation, the Palace will be looking at issues of copyright and

possible criminality. A source said the royal household is trying to ascertain where the film came from, who it came from and why it was handed over to the newspaper.

A Palace spokesman said: “It is disappointing that film, shot eight decades ago and apparently from Her Majesty’s personal family archive, has been obtained and exploited in this manner.”

The grainy footage from 1933 shows the Queen playing with a dog on the lawn in the gardens of Balmoral, The Sun claims, before she raises an arm to wave to the camera with Margaret.

The Queen Mother then

makes a Nazi salute, and after glancing towards her mother the Queen mimics the gesture.

The Queen Mother repeats the salute, joined by Edward, and Margaret raises her left hand before the two children continue dancing and playing on the grass.

Some have criticised the newspaper’s decision to publish the footage, and a Palace source said the pictures should be seen “in their proper context and time”.

The source added: “The Queen is around six years of age at the time and entirely innocent of attaching any meaning to these gestures.”

Roast potatoes 1 medium-large roasting potato per person vegetable oil spray herbs: rosemary and/or thyme optional seasoning mix, Tuscan, optional ■ Preheat oven to 220ºC ■ Scrub or peel potatoes and slice into large even-sized chunks.

Fishing for adventure

F

inding inspiration to write a postcard home from small Swedish fishing village Fjallbacka isn’t difficult.

Anyone lost for ideas need only glance at the elaborate, adjective-laden travel scripts pinned outside globally-themed rooms in the boutique Stora Hotellet Bryggan hotel.

Each letter was supposedly written by fictional character Captain Klassen, regaling tales of his adventures around the world. Given the breadth of his voyages – from Indonesia to Africa and the Americas – it’s somehow ironic that his words should wind up in a sleepy seaside town barely acknowledged on a world map.

But when hotel manager Susanne Maxvall invented the character, she was tapping into a sense of nautical adventure that drenches Fjallbacka like the spray from the North Sea. Set along a coastline of rough-hewn bluffs with an archipelago of 8000 islands and skerries, Fjallbacka is the star attraction in the scenic Bohuslan region and an easy 1.5-hour drive from Sweden’s second city Gothenburg.

I’ve come here for an alternative seaside break, where fish ‘n’ chip shops take the form of seafood safaris set against the towering cairns atop the town’s dominating Vetteberget mountain.

Passing rows of classic clapboard houses and buildings decorated with intricate designs known as snickargladje (carpenter’s joy), I head to the harbour where a bust of Ingrid Bergman is surrounded by wild flowers.

The Swedish Hollywood actress first came here on holiday in 1958, then spent every summer – bar one – until her death in 1982 on nearby island Dannholmen, purchased by her third husband Lars Schmidt.

They would regularly throw parties for the likes of Alfred Hitchcock and Diana Ross.

When Ingrid Bergman died, she requested her ashes be cast out at sea and it’s here that the magic of west Sweden really takes hold.

I join fisherman Ingemar Granquist on a boat trip to look for langoustines – mini lob-

sters, a speciality in this region.

Visitors can join seafood safaris throughout the year, although the delicacies on offer differ depending on the season. Langoustines can be fished from spring through to autumn, while the lobster season starts at the end of September.

Shellfish in this part of the world is exceptional. Ingemar has supplied langoustines to Saudi Arabian princes and some of his catch was even served at last year’s Nobel Prize Award Ceremony. Cold water caused by the Gulf Stream means seafood grows more slowly in this part of the world, enhancing the flavour. Ingemar tells me that while oysters take two years to grow off the French coast, here they require six years.

But it’s not just the thought of a fresh catch which grabs my imagination; being out on the water is the best way to enjoy West Sweden’s coastline, drifting past lone lighthouses and isolated islets.

It’s a good job there are plen-

ty of alternative distractions, because our attempts to locate langoustines are largely unsuccessful. As we peer eagerly over the side of the boat, drizzled by a mist of salty water, Ingemar hauls in several empty rope and metal pots with only the odd crab as prize booty.

There are strict regulations governing fishing in the area, and Ingemar carefully casts back the few female langoustines we find in order to stick by sustainable practices. Lobsters in particular are carefully monitored by marine police, although Ingemar hints that sometimes foul play is afoot.

It almost sounds like a case for bestselling crime novelist Camilla Lackberg, whose stories set in Fjallbacka have caused a surge of interest in the town. Every Friday and Saturday at 5pm, 45-minute walking tours guide tourists around the highlight locations featured in Camilla’s books.

her novels.

In the slow summer twilight, there’s nothing remotely dark or murderous about Fjallbacka, but in winter when the population shrinks and charcoal-grey clouds grow thicker, I imagine it could easily provide fodder for a Scandi noir thriller.

I climb the natural stairwell that winds through the Kungsklyftan ravine, caused by an earthquake 250 million years ago, and stand on top of Vetteberget mountain looking out to Valo Island, where Camilla attended a summer school and which would later become one of her fictional crime scenes.

But idyllic island life isn’t restricted to this part of the coastline - even back in Gothenburg it’s possible to get out on the water and ferry hop between islands in the Gothenburg archipelago.

I base myself at the Gothia Towers hotel, a slick glass high-rise overlooking the Liseberg amusement park, where the rooftop Heaven 23 restaurant serves a piled-high open

kingsize prawn sandwich that even the hungriest diner would struggle to scale.

It’s easy enough to get out of the town centre. A short tram and pleasant ferry ride later I’m in Styrso, one of the larger inhabited islands where visiting Swedes wistfully imagine they might own a summerhouse one day.

With cars prohibited, residents get about in golf carts or motorised scooters with sidecars to carry luggage, wood blocks or even family members.

I walk along pathways where ruby red plants dress rocks like embroidered shawls, and pass grand canary-yellow properties with fairytale turrets. I climb to the top of Stora Ros, a vantage point with a superb panorama of the archipelago, where clusters of boulders arch from the water, like semi-submerged turtles.

I’ve no idea whether or not Captain Klassen has passed by here on his travels. But I somehow doubt he’d be lost for wor ds.

Lees, who narrowly missed selection in the World Cup team named earlier this month, will head to the UK at the end of August and, once her registration is completed, hopes to work in London as a house surgeon. The 26-year-old told New Zealand coach Waimarama Taumaunu of her plans before trials, so her decision to move overseas wouldn’t appear a knee-jerk reaction if she missed out on the team. Local sides well placed

By Erin TaskEr All four Mid Canterbury teams in the Mid/South Canterbury senior hockey competitions went unbeaten on Saturday, meaning all four are well within finals contention.

With the finals looming next month Mid Canterbury teams remain at the top of both the men’s and women’s competitions, with Wakanui Black topping the standings for the men, and Hampstead for the women.

Wakanui’s other team, Wakanui Blue is currently third and Hampstead/Collegians are fourth in the women’s competition.

The only local team not to win on Saturday was Hampstead, instead finishing with a 2-all draw with Cambridge in Timaru, but they are unbeaten so far this season and still the team to beat.

Hampstead/Collegians travelled to Timaru to take on bottom-placed Geraldine and came away with a 3-2 win in freezing conditions, and coach Donna Mealings said it was a good win after being down 1-0 at halftime.

joined her on the score-sheet with a goal from a penalty corner soon after, with the third goal coming from Kate Donald.

Geraldine came back within one but Hampstead/Collegians held on for the win.

“It’s looking fairly promising for the semi-finals, they just have to keep playing well,” Mealings said.

“It will be tough this weekend because we play Cambridge and they’re second on the table, but we beat them last time.”

Adding to the challenge on Saturday was the weather.

“It was so, so cold. Normally the changing sheds are colder

than outside, but it was the reverse; the windchill outside was just awful,” Mealings said.

Instead of warming up outside, the team warmed up in the changing shed, wrapped in warm clothes and blankets for about 10 minutes.

“I’ve never experienced anything like it, to be honest,” Mealings said.

Wakanui Black remained top in the men’s competition thanks to a 2-1 win in Timaru over their nearest rivals on the leaderboard, Tainui, while Wakanui Blue ran away convincing 5-2 winners over Timaru Boys’ High School in Ashburton.

Deja vu for Watters Cup final

BY ERIN TASKER The 2015 Watters Cup rugby finalists have been found.

Rakaia will attempt to make it a hat-trick of Watters Cup wins when they take on Methven on August 1.

The two sides had their places in the Mid Canterbury rugby final confirmed following Saturday’s final round robin results – Southern beating Celtic 26-22, and Rakaia beating Hampstead 58-7.

With no semi-finals this season, just who would play in the final went down to the wire.

Even top-of-the-table Methven – who had the bye – had to wait to find out if results would go their way.

Celtic needed to win with a bonus point against Southern – they got their four-try bonus point, but they didn’t win.

And for Southern to be in with a chance they needed to win with a bonus point – which they did – and for Hampstead to beat Rakaia.

But winless Hampstead beating defending champions Rakaia was always going to be a tough ask.

Celtic v Southern Barely a soul braved the sideline to watch Southern win what turned out to be their final match of the season against Celtic.

Driving rain and a howling

wind meant those who did go along to watch the final round robin match of the Watters Cup rugby competition, retreated to their cars where they were able to keep dry and warm, as a dominant second half performance at Mayfield saw Southern take the clash out 26-22.

It was a must-win match for both sides if they wanted to make the Watters Cup final, but Rakaia demolishing Hampstead meant Southern’s win at Mayfield didn’t matter in the end.

Rakaia’s win booked them a place in the final against Methven.

At the start of the day though, Celtic had to win with a bonus point if they were to stand a chance at making the final, and straight away that result looked a possibility.

The visitors scored within the first minute, after Southern made a mess of receiving the kick-off and Nathan McCloy pounced on the loose ball over the goal line to claim the opening points.

Two more first half tries followed and Celtic went to the break with a handy lead.

But Celtic coach Warren McKenzie knew it was going to be a hard road to the final whistle, as the weather continued to deteriorate.

“In the second half we were right into the teeth of the weath-

er. At half time the boys were complaining they couldn’t feel their hands and limbs and we knew it was going to be tough,” McKenzie said.

“Gus Lindsay, who’s played a lot of rugby in Dunedin, reckons it’s the coldest he’s ever been in a game.”

A few too many mistakes, and Celtic fell off their game plan.

“We wanted to play territory in the second half, but we struggled to get out of our own half as the weather packed in.”

McCloy tried to kick Celtic out of trouble, but driving rain and howling winds made life tough, and Celtic’s defence struggled to hold Southern out.

Southern had won the toss and elected to receive, and while they may have been regretting that decision when Celtic scored virtually from the kick-off, it paid off in the end, with the wild weather at their backs in the second half.

Southern’s Mike Spence said his side was patchy early in the game and made a few mistakes, but they clawed their way back and were happy to finish the season on a high.

nal it was a long shot, knowing that Hampstead beating Rakaia was going to be a tough ask, but for Celtic the picture had been clearer.

“We wanted to start well and we really did, and to keep piling the points on, that’s exactly what we wanted,” McKenzie said.

“But I said to them at half-time

it was all about territory, and we just struggled.”

At the end of the game players sprinted off the field to escape the cold, and as afternoon turned to evening, the rain turned to snow.

During the game cars had lined the side of the field at the Mayfield Domain, and heaters and windscreen wipers were working overtime to keep spectators warm, and their view unimpeded.

Virtually the only people on the side-line were the teams’ coaching staff and reserves, and they probably would have liked to have been in one of those cars too.

It was a good day to be a forward; the backs were doing what they could to keep warm – moving their feet, rubbing their hands together, putting their hands under their armpits.

“At the end of the game the boys just sprinted off the paddock and jumped in to the hot showers,” McKenzie said.

Some didn’t even take their boots or socks off before jumping under the warm water.

For both sides, their season was over, but both were happy with their season-ending performances.

“To end our season playing well like that, we are looking forward to next season now,” McKenzie said.

Naholo may yet be a player in Rugby World Cup

BY PATRICK MCKENDRY Following the triumph of a winning test debut, All Black wing Waisake Naholo has suffered the heartbreak of hearing his World Cup dream is all but over after a

scan revealed a cracked tibia.

Naholo will be out for three months, but coach Steve Hansen said there was a possibility he could be called in as cover in England should another outside back succumb to injury.

“It’s pretty disappointing for him and for us,” Hansen said yesterday before the squad of 31 travelled to Johannesburg.

“We’re all a bit shocked because he was weight-bearing on it and he looked pretty good but last

night it got really sore so Doc thought he better get it scanned and in the scan there’s a very fine crack. It means three months.

There’s no displacement, and if we can get him right and we do need an outside back replacement

he’ll be fit and ready to go by the middle of October.”

Missing from the squad is Dan Carter and Sonny Bill Williams, with Hansen saying he wanted to freshen them up before the Bledisloe Cup matches. - NZME

Rakaia issues bold statement

By Erin TaskEr Rakaia only needed to beat Hampstead on Saturday to book their place in the Watters Cup final, but they weren’t happy with just winning.

They wanted to win well, and they did just that, coming away from Hampstead with an emphatic 58-7 win, and the Mossy Tait Cup. Two tries to Seta Koroitamana, and one each to Doug Rushton, Jackson Donlan, Nete Caucau, Dwayne Burrows, Richard Burns and Kamaka Reti sealed the win for Rakaia and ensured they’ll be in the August 1 final to attempt to make it three wins in a row.

Rakaia coach Wayne Foxcroft said it was cold, and no great spectacle, but for his side it was a pleasing performance and one that puts them in a good headspace ahead of the final against Methven.

“We used the ball quite well and stuck to the team plan so that was very pleasing,” Foxcroft said.

At halftime Rakaia held a 20-0 lead and wind and rain meant it wasn’t much of a day for good, flowing rugby, but the defending champions showed their class in the second half.

They had the cold wind at their backs and the tries flowed freely, with Rakaia sailing past their half century and letting in just one try down the other end.

That try went to Makalofie Satui, who latched on to an inside ball from Tevita Ula to score beside the posts.

Hampstead’s Regan Broker said it was a disappointing end to the season.

“We’d done alright this season, but to end the way the last couple of weeks went is disappointing,” Broker said.

Hampstead attacked well early on but came away with no reward, and they didn’t use the strong southerly that was at their backs.

Down 15-0 nearing half time, Broker was confident his side was still in it.

But a try right before the

break to make it 20-0 pushed it just that little bit further out of reach.

As the game progressed, the wind caused further problems, with many of Hampstead’s players not used to such cold conditions.

“Some of the boys were fresh off the plane from Samoa and they were not enjoying the weather at all,” Broker said.

Some were behind the goal posts trying to escape the wind after tries, and even the supporters were struggling, with 40-50 people spotted trying to take shelter in a tree line at one point.

But the cold was no excuse.

“We just played with no structure whatsoever.

“We went back to what we used to do in trying to take on three or four defenders at a time and losing the ball.

“They were

playing as individuals again,” Broker said.

“Rakaia just played too well, and if they play like they did (on Saturday) I can’t see them losing to Methven really.”

Provided the players they provide for Mid Canterbury’s Ranfurly Shield challenge on Thursday all come through unscathed, Rakaia should have a fit and healthy squad to choose from come August 1.

They came through Saturday’s through match injury-free – vital just a couple of weeks out from Mid Canterbury rugby’s showpiece event.

Samoa have held off a valiant comeback by the USA to take a 2116 win in their Pacific Nations Cup clash yesterday. In front of over 10,000 fans in San Jose, Samoa put on a first-half clinic, crossing twice in remarkable fashion to post a comprehensive 21-3 half-time advantage, but the USA came back and AJ MacGinty’s conversion made it a five point game with five minutes to go, but Samoa held off the late American onslaught to hold on for the victory. In brief Solid progress for Frye Talented South Island apprentice Ashley Frye will take the next step in her return to race riding shortly when she applies for the renewal of her jockey’s license for the new 2015/2016 racing season. Frye has been sidelined since a devastating fall at Ashburton in March 2014 which saw her suffer life threatening injuries that left her in a coma through a major head trauma. Since that day the plucky teenager has battled back through intensive rehabilitation to be at the stage where a return to riding is a distinct reality. An all-the-way victory by the speedy Jazzman at Oamaru yesterday could prove crucial as three big stables battle it out to be crowned the leading South Island trainer. Heading into the day the first year combination of Michael Pitman and son Matthew held a narrow one win lead over another father and son partnership in Brian & Shane Anderton who are level with John Parsons and wife Karen. With just twelve days to go Pitman is hopeful the now two win margin might hold up although he is taking nothing for granted. “I just want to win it for Matt more than myself,” he said.

Willis aiming high

BY ANDREW ALDERSON Nick Willis has validated his middledistance running future by bettering his New Zealand 1500m record for the fifth time in 10 years at the Monaco Diamond League.

He originally beat Sir John Walker’s 30-year-old mark by 0.02s in 2005, with a 3m 32.38s run in Paris.

On Saturday, on a humid 28degC evening at Stade Louis II, Willis broke his 2014 mark by 0.25s, setting a time of 3m 29.66s to finish fifth.

Importantly, the result places Willis in contention to become the first New Zealand man to earn a medal in the 32-year existence of the world championships.

“It’s my best race time-wise, so I must be in some of the best shape of my life,” Willis said.

“The blessing of this race on the calendar before the world championships versus the London Olympics is there are six weeks to go rather than three.

“This will also give me a good seeding going into world championships, it puts me in the top five or six in contention for medals.”

Willis stayed at the back of the field for the most part and even expressed frustration at not breaking into a better position on the home straight.

Shield rugby ‘big step up’

BY ERIN TASKER The 23 Mid Canterbury players who will travel to Napier to challenge for rugby’s prestigious Ranfurly Shield this week have been named.

The squad will be captained

by Jon Dampney, who also captained the team in last year’s challenge against Counties-Manukau and has recovered from a calf injury in time to make the trip to take on the Hawke’s Bay.

Coach Grant Keenan said the players got together for their penultimate training run before heading to Napier yesterday morning, and while they were missing a few players after Saturday’s club rugby, he was happy with the squad they’d named.

“I’m extremely happy with the squad we have selected.

“They are the best in the union and they will play to the best of their ability,” he said. “(Yesterday) was a clarity
