Recent rain is making little difference to the recharge of critical aquifers in Mid Canterbury as some rural groundwater wells continue to fall to record lows. Environment Canterbury (ECan) Groundwater Science Manager Carl Hanson said while there had been between 22 and 92mm of rain in parts of Mid Canterbury over the past seven days it had done little to alleviate low ground-

water levels. Some farm wells in the Wakanui/Pendarves/Chertsey zone were still at record lows while across Canterbury overall levels continued to be on the “low side”. Mr Hanson said it wasn’t the “worst year by any means” but it was the first “really dry” year since the early 2000s where a similar stretch of dry levels were recorded. “We are getting towards that sort of level. It’s definitely a dry year but not re-

ally quite reaching record levels.” This week’s rain was helping to restore soil moisture levels but was doing little to recharge aquifers. “What it really takes is a good period of solid rain for a few days. One episode like that over the winter period would give a good recharge. We didn’t have that last winter.”

Even Guardian photographer Tetsuro Mitomo was dragged into the mix as part of the Hula Queen’s ever-present paparazzi crew. “The beauty of street theatre is that it brings people together from all walks of life,” the Queen said. “It’s about love, kindness and being nice to each other.” Onlooker Majorie Wallace was kept in fits of laughter and said she absolutely loved the show. Cantabrians also have a chance to check out the Buskers Road show for the next few days as they travel through Lincoln, Rangiora, Kaiapoi and North Brighton.

Bad weather didn’t dampen anyone’s excitement when the World Buskers Festival roadshow rolled into town yesterday. People from all over Mid Canterbury crowded into the Ashburton College auditorium to be blown away by some of the festivals most talented acts. Originally the buskers intended to take over Baring Square East but the downpour forced them indoors. Sharon Mahoney and her alter ego Miss Tallulah was the first act to take to the stage, edging on the audience with her satirical Canadian humour. Crowds then gasped as Zane, Degge and Imogen of the Biggest Little Circus trio juggled, dangled and spun their way through their act. It wasn’t long before Eloise Green AKA Hula Queen dazzled with her improvised humour and aerial acrobatics and finally, AD DJ took the stage. A very popular act, Ms Green introduced herself by telling the audience they would probably recognise her as she was “quite famous, just not here in Ashbur-

Ashburton’s team of district councillors and mayor Angus McKay have a high attendance record when it comes to council and committee meetings. Over the past year the council has held 14 full council meetings and its environmental services, service

missing just one each. Of the 14 council meetings Neil Brown and Martin Nordqvist were absent from two and Ken Cutforth, Don McLeod and Darryl Nelson were absent from one each. During the year the council changed its committee structure. Originally councillors were assigned membership of two out

of three committees, but the new structure sees all councillors members of all three committees. Mr McKay had the lowest attendance rate at council committee meetings, 20 out of 27, but on each occasion he was absent on council business. Councillors Donna Favel, Russell Ellis and Ken Cutforth each missed six meetings, but one ab-

sence each occured before they became members of that committee. District councillors are not paid a meeting fee, they are paid an annual allowance. In the current financial year (from July 1) the Remuneration Authority gave the civic team an 8.6 per cent pay rise. Mr McKay now earns $100,200, deputy mayor Darryl Nelson and

The Guardian understands the victim was contacted by phone several times on Saturday before a second person knocked on their door and declared they were from Kiwibank. The scammers obtained the victim’s debit card and used it twice

It was pandemonium on a recent Air New Zealand flight from Tokyo to Auckland after the plane encountered horrific turbulence an hour into the flight. Passengers screamed as the plane dropped sharply twice without warning and starting shaking violently sending wine arcing into overhead luggage compartments and fully laid food trays littering aisles. A passenger posted on social media site Imgur that an hour into the 10-hour flight the plane suddenly dropped and started “shaking like crazy” sending everything in the air and spraying wine on to the cabin roof. Falsabaiana said passengers were screaming. “It was terrifying. I thought that might be the end of me.” Poster Ollieislame described the panic. “We had a little bump-debump at first and then all of a sudden the plane just dropped and started shaking like crazy. Then the second drop came. Everything up in the air, wine on the roof. “Quite a few screams and general terror.” Passengers said the cabin crew did their best to make everyone comfortable for the rest of the flight. Falsabaiana said: “They went through and picked up everything they could but they just weren’t equipped to do much more and so many people needed help cleaning themselves up I don’t think it was that high a priority.” – NZME

Environmentalists might be keen for local authorities to stop using weed sprays containing glyphosate, but that won’t be happening in Ashburton until an effective and cheaper alternative is found, says Ashburton District Council open spaces manager David Askin. The Green Party is asking the Environmental Protection Agency and local councils to reassess their use of glyphosate, the active ingredient in weedkillers such as Roundup, as part of its nationwide spray-free streets and parks campaign. Mr Askin has defended the council’s spray policy, saying there were no viable alternatives on the market. One or two councils had changed to a hot-water based weed control programme, but that was costly to set up, he said. Glyphosate broke down very quickly in the soil and was safe as soon as it dried on plants, Mr Askin said. “When we spray sports fields and play areas we do put signs out, but this is the most common weed spray ingredient and it’s widely used around New Zea-

land.” The Green Party’s pesticide spokesperson Steffan Browning claims that many towns and cities overseas had made the switch to glyphosate-free weed treatment and New Zealand should follow suit. “Councils and the EPA need to assess the risk of glyphosate for themselves objectively and

urgently, in the interests of New Zealanders’ health and the health of our environment,” he said. One area of Ashburton that appears not to have seen a touch of weedspray – chemical or natural – is a strip of Ashburton’s Harrison Street, with the kerbside gutter on the southern side a mass of weeds. Rural investors remain keen BY NADINE PORTER

Despite the depressed dairy sector there is still “very high” interest in buying dairy farms from New Zealand based rural corporations and investors. Bayleys Canterbury director Bill Whalan said although the sale of larger dairy farms had slowed considerably there was still a considerable number of buyers in the market place. Mr Whalan said there was always a mix of overseas buyers in the market but that number had not increased in recent times. “In the overall scheme of things though it’s a relatively small buyer group but when you look at

overall transactions they do tend to buy larger assets … It’s an adjunct group, not a primary one.” He said Canterbury farms remained sought after with “activity” in the local market at present. “From memory, settled sales of dairy farms up until the beginning of December were only four in Canterbury but interestingly all were in excess of $10 million which absolutely floored me with one over $24 million.” Good water was king, he said. Bayleys sold 24 farms in Canterbury in 2015 – six of those in Mid Canterbury and have advertised for interest from those looking to sell for a number of wouldbe farm buyers who had failed to

settle a purchase. Other interested parties included a core group of “around 10” overseas buyers who have been in the market for the past 10 years, predominantly from Europe, Canada and the United States. “They are interested in productive investments – primarily dairy farms because when it comes down to it our dairy farmers are the most efficient producers in the world.” However the continuing interest in Canterbury agricultural land was a far cry to its southern counterparts with Mr Whalan saying dairy farms in Southland were “just not selling”.

Around 41 dairy farms have been listed on Trade Me with little interest. Land Information New Zealand communications account manager Andrew Smith said there had been 17 applications from overseas buyers for consent to purchase agricultural land in Canterbury during 2015. Currently four were still being processed with no details available until a decision had been made, he said. The last granted application was for a 360 hectare dairy farm in Oxford which was then sold to the Canadian Government via their Public Sector Pension Investment Board.

Pick up ‘artists’ bail The group of men “pick up artists” who’d planned to deliver a controversial seminar on how to seduce women has backtracked on its intention to come to New Zealand. Australians and New Zealanders were up in arms over Real Social Dynamic’s arrival. A petition started in Australia collecting more than 60,000 signatures, while a similar petition to ban it from holding a seminar in New Zealand had also reached almost 2000 signatures. Women’s Refuge NZ even started a hashtag for its campaign against the group ‘s arrival here – #NoYouAreBloodyNot.” Women’s Refuge has responded to the news of the backtrack on its Facebook page with a thumb’s up. “#TinoPai.” - NZME

Arrest over road rage A Christchurch man has been arrested for assaulting another man with a metal bar that led to the victim being hit by a van. The incident occurred on Riccarton Road at about 8.40am on January 14, when the 45-year-old driver of a white van was reported to have approached the driver of a transport truck and threatened him with a metal bar. Acting senior sergeant Melanie Noonan said the van driver returned to his vehicle and while leaving the scene hit the other driver who had got out of his truck. The man is due to appear in Christchurch District Court on Thursday charged with intentional damage and two counts of assault. Police are still investigating. - NZME

Aquifers remain low despite rain From P1 Those in the Valetta area in Mid Canterbury had been hit hardest this year, with Mr Hanson saying of the 48 consents that have adaptive management conditions where seasonal allocation was based on September groundwater levels, 29 farms were not able to take their full allocation of groundwater over the course of the irrigation season. Many of those had newer water take consents and were suffering restrictions for the first time because of the pressure on aquifers this season. The pressure for water this season has also been reflected in Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation Scheme users utilising the highest volume of water across the scheme to date since it began operating in 2011. That was coupled with a high uptake of contracted Lake Coleridge storage water. An agreement with TrustPower Limited meant the BCI scheme could contract up to 20 million cubic metres, providing around 97 per cent reliability to 18,000 hectares compared to 82 per cent without storage. Currently the BCI scheme has used around 80 per cent of its allocated Lake Coleridge stored water option, Mr Wright said. Just up the road however, the Central Water Plains scheme, which also had access to stored water, had used its allocation and was now using additional contracted water due to the dry conditions.

Te Atatu Baptist Church held a vigil last evening in remembrance of a woman found viciously beaten to death. Cunxiu Tian, 69, was found dead in her home on Glenvil Lane, Te Atatu, on Friday. A postmortem examination on Saturday concluded she was the victim of a prolonged attack, which included multiple blows to her face and head. The prayer vigil was held at the Old Te Atatu Road church, two doors down from Ms Tian’s house A team of around 25 investigators are working on the case, including forensic experts. DOC still hunting shooters The Department of Conservation is still looking for those responsible for shooting hundreds of seabirds on Ashton Beach in recent weeks. DOC biodiversity ranger Brad Edwards collected evidence from the beach last week, including the carcasses of a number of critically endangered black billed gulls and

endangered white fronted terns, along with shotgun cartridges and ammunition boxes. He said the massacre appeared to have taken place over a number of weeks, judging from the varying stages of carcass decomposition. A pathologist has now confirmed the birds died as a result

of having been shot, but no leads have been forthcoming. Mr Edwards wants to hear from anyone who has noticed unfamiliar vehicle movements in the Williams Road area, or heard shooting in the vicinity. He urged members of the public to take note of relevant details, such as the time, the make and

colour of vehicles and the registration number if possible. “We don’t want members of the public to intervene directly – they can call us on the hotline and we will get onto it,” he said. It does not look likely Ashburton will offer further Montessori-based education any time in the near future. Currently the district has only one Montessori facility, the Ashburton Montessori Preschool located on Chalmers Avenue. The Montessori philosophy, founded by Dr Maria Montessori, follows the belief that children should learn to be self-sufficient. Her beliefs were the foundation of a programme centred on respect, different learning speeds, practical life skills and understanding children’s absorbent minds. The system came under the spotlight recently when it was announced two-year-old Prince George attended his first day at the Westacre Montessori School in Norfolk. Ashburton Montessori Preschool co-owner Tessa Skevington said while she would love for there to be other Montessori options in the district for children when they finish preschool, there were no plans for expansion. Not only would it be a big job for a preschool to expand to cater for such a wide age group, funding would also be an issue. While all early childhood centres (ECEs) are on the same funding level, Montessori primary and intermediate schools are classed as private and so are

Inmate dies An inmate died at an Otago Corrections Facility near Milton yesterday. OCF prison director Jack Harrison said staff found the prisoner in an unresponsive state and provided medical attention; however, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The death has been referred to the coroner and is subject to an investigation by the prison inspectorate and police. St John communications advisor Ian Henderson said three ambulances were sent to the prison about 4am. A man was treated but died at the scene. - NZME

Sex offender moves A man found guilty of sexually abusing his neighbour’s granddaughter and then bailed to live up their shared driveway and just 30m from where his victim lives has left his property. In December it was revealed that the man, who is on bail awaiting sentencing in June, had been on bail at the address since his arrest when the victim was eight. She is now 10. Her family said their home had become a prison and “an absolute hell” because of Judge Anna Johns’ decision in November to continue the man’s bail until sentencing. The man, in his 70s, has name suppression. His sentencing has been delayed until after a second trial later this year in which he will stand accused of offending against another child. - NZME

Mrs Skevington’s five-year-old son Benji attends the preschool and due to the fact there were no other Montessori education facilities in the district, he will attend Longbeach School, where his sister is currently enrolled, when the time came.

However, if there were Montessori facilities available in Ashburton she would enrol her children, she said. “It would just be lovely.” Co-owner Lauren Barltrop said Montessori based preschool education was very popular in Ashburton and it was not unusual for the preschool to

have a waiting list. Many parents enrolled their children as soon as they were born, she said. Like Mrs Skevington, Mrs Barltrop said many parents decided to send their children to smaller, rural schools when their stint at the preschool came to an end.

A one-eyed vulnerable albatross has been released back into the wild after receiving treatment at Wellington Zoo. The bird arrived at the zoo with a deep injury to its left eye. “While the bird was in a pretty bad way when it arrived, we’ve been able to get it fit to return to the wild,” the zoo’s Nest Te Kohanga veterinary practice manager Amanda Tiffin said. - NZME

Body found on coast A man’s body has been found in the water on the coast north of Thames. It was found submerged on the rocks on Thames Coast Road. A Waikato police spokesman said it appeared the man had been fishing, but it was not clear how he came to be in the water. Officers are busy working to identify the man and inform his family. - NZME

Wreckage from ship washes up The first pictures have emerged of wreckage from the Pee Jay V that sank off the coast of Whakatane on Monday. The burnt wreckage of the ship was located along Coastlands Beach. Pollution from the wreckage is minimal, regional council staff say. Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s pollution prevention manager Nick Zanam said that if there was serious environmental damage the high tides would have washed up an oil slick across local beaches. However, that hasn’t occurred after the last two high tides since White Island Tour’s Pee Jay V caught fire and sunk about 1km off the Whakatane coast. Mr Zanam said the fire was so fierce and black that it appeared to have burnt off the majority of the toxic chemicals, with there being no wash up along the coastline between the Whakatane River mouth and Golf Links Road. “A team of local Iwi, Ngati Awa, Bay of Plenty Regional Council staff and Department of Conservation staff did a beach survey this morning. “We observed mainly burnt out pieces of timber from the boat. We had staff from PeeJay’s with us who identified them as bits of the actual vessel that had sunk. “We’ve had no reports of any other vessel sinking so we know it’s fresh and from overnight. What you can see here (along the beach) is that there is no hydrocarbon contamination.” Instead, the high tide mark had left only residue from the burnt timber and charcoal. Mr Zanam said the boat was

made from kauri wood and fibreglass. Terrified passengers on a White Island tour boat leaped from the upper deck of the blazing vessel into the choppy ocean on Monday as flames quickly engulfed the ferry. All 53 passengers and seven crew made it back to shore with the help of rescuers. Four people were taken to Whakatane Hospital for treatment. The dramatic fire and rescue played out in full view of locals who gathered at Whakatane Heads, and was live streamed on the Whakatane Coastguard website. White Island Tours marketing manager Patrick O’Sullivan said about 120 life jackets were kept on Pee Jay V but admitted not all passengers were wearing them on Monday. “As far as we are aware the rapid emission of smoke meant crew could not get to some of the places the life jackets were stored,” Mr O’Sullivan said. It’s too early to speculate what caused the fire and subsequent sinking, a Transport Accident Investigation Commission spokesman has said. Rob Thompson, chief executive of the commission, spoke to media in Whakatane yesterday afternoon and said it was not yet known how the fire started on PeeJay V. Mr Thompson said it would take several weeks to gather information from passengers and crews. Two Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) investigators arrived in Whakatane yesterday to begin gathering evidence for the inquiry into the fire. - NZME

Rain calls time on berry season This week’s rain has brought welcome relief to many farmers – but it could well spell the end of the fresh berry season. Vicki Dobson, who owns Southberry berry farm in Tinwald, has called off her fruit pickers. “We’ve had four days of rain so we’ve stopped picking,” she said. “At this time we don’t know whether we will get back into the

crop when the weather clears up.” Rain spoils the berries by causing them to soften. “They won’t keep once they are wet,” Mrs Dobson said. On the other hand she agreed the rain had brought welcome relief to many farmers, even if it has signalled the end of a successful season on the berry farm.

“We’ve had a great season up until now and we are very close to the end of it anyway, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens when the sun comes out.” While the soft berries are at the mercy of the weather, the pickers might get another run in the blackcurrants, but they too are near the end of the season, Mrs Dobson said.

ummer in Godzone. You have to love it – not. When we should be basking in day after day of sunshine and warm weather, we’re drowning in day after day of rain. Endless rain. Yes, it’s a blessing for the drought stricken and it’s even great for gardens, but there’s a point where enough is enough. And with more of the stuff on the radar next week, once this current patch clears, most of us will have had enough. Bring back summer. The effects of too much rain at this time of the year will soon start to show in the impact on the district’s crops. Already some farmers will be counting the cost of the summer wet in thousands of dollars as seed drops on to the ground or crops start turning from ripe to overripe to mouldy. It’s easy for anyone not making a living from the land to condemn farmers as a bunch of moaners, as people who’re never satisfied whatever the weather. The reality is, the fortunes of farming rises and falls on the right weather conditions arriving at the right time. If the weather gods perform, then seeds grow, plants thrive and crops are harvested. The cycle is completed. If they don’t then the cost can be incredibly high. And this year, with dairy prices continuing to falter, this district needs the wealth that can come from a good harvest. Our diversity is our strength and it’s a rare year when there’s at least one sector not riding high on the international commodities market. This year it’s anything but dairy. If the unrelenting damp continues it could be anything but our other massive dollar earner, the arable sector. Arable might be overshadowed by dairying in the public’s perception of rural wealth, but it’s the quiet achiever. The link between what happens on the farm and what happens in town is unbreakable. If one thrives so does the other, if one falls, the other goes down with it. We’re a long way from falling, but a bad harvest on top of low dairy prices will certainly dent business confidence at a time when we need to be leading the pack, not struggling to keep up.

YOUR VIEW Park vandalism I was very disappointed and sad to hear about the vandalism of the newly-restored boat that has been donated to the Lake Hood playground area. To the person who did this, I wonder if for a moment you spared a thought for the men who, in the middle of winter, were in a cold concrete building fixing this boat to the point that it was safe for children to be able to play in, or a thought for the many people who have put hours and hours of work into creating a playground for the children of Ashburton to be able to play on when they come to visit Lake Hood. I trust that you don’t have a guilty conscience about this, but I hope one day you might think about all the people who do good things for others to enjoy and donate their time and own money to wonderful projects like this. Paris ‘mastermind’ known Moroccan police have arrested a Belgian man of Moroccan descent linked to the Islamic State group and who had a “direct relationship” to attackers who carried out the Paris attacks just over two months ago, the Interior Ministry said. The man had travelled to Syria with one of the Paris suicide bombers, where he received military training and built relationships with Isis field commanders, “including the mastermind” of the Paris attacks, and others who threatened attacks in France and Belgium, the ministry said in a statement. The statement identified the suspect only by the initials J.A., and didn’t explain his suspected relationship to the Paris attackers. Several of the Islamic extremists who targeted a Paris rock concert, stadium and cafes had Moroccan origins and links to Belgium. The attacks on November 13 killed 130 people. The ministry said in a statement that the man was arrested in the town of Mohammedia, near Casablanca, after travelling through Turkey, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. It said the suspect is under investigation. Belgian prosecutors didn’t

‘Mercurial, deeply talented and driven’ Their popularity grew through much of the decade, and they embodied for many listeners the melodic Los Angeles sound despite having no native Californians in the group. Critics often dismissed them as slick and unadventurous, but their blend of mellow ballads and macho rockers, and of pop and folk and country, gave them unusually broad appeal. Glenn Frey, a rock ‘n’ roll rebel from Detroit who journeyed West, co-founded the Eagles and with Don Henley became one of history’s most successful songwriting teams with such hits as Hotel California and Life in the Fast Lane, has died. Frey, 67, died of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia, the band said on its website. He died on Monday in New York. He had fought the ailments for the past several weeks, the band said. “The Frey family would like to thank everyone who joined Glenn to fight this fight and hoped and prayed for his recovery,” a statement on the band’s website said. “Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community & millions of fans worldwide.” Guitarist Frey and drummer Henley formed the Eagles in Los Angeles in the early 1970s, along with guitarist Bernie Leadon and bassist Randy Meisner.

Surviving the chair A Kiwi living in London has conquered talk show host Graham Norton’s notorious red chair with a story featuring the ashes of a woman’s dead husband in Italy. Brad Baxter, originally from Christchurch, featured in the chair in an episode of The Graham Norton Show which aired in Britain on Friday. Mr Baxter told a story from his time travelling in Italy, when an Italian woman took him in in the pouring rain. “I was soaking wet and she offered me a change of clothing, and that’s where everything went wrong,” he said. “I happened to fall over and knock over an urn that was on the bookshelf that I was getting changed next to and it ended up falling. The end result was myself covered in someone’s ashes. To make matters just a little bit worse, when I managed to finally pull my pants up from around my ankles and brush off some of the ash, I saw a photo of the lady and what looked like her husband. Smiths City to buy Furniture City in Auckland, one in Whangarei, an internet store and a distribution facility, it said in a statement. That adds to its current footprint of 33 stores, which spread as far north as the Bay of Plenty. Currently New Zealand has a high rate compared to some of our largest trading partners Australia (2 per cent), the US (0.25 per cent) and Europe (0.05 per cent), thus making our dollar more appealing to international investors. The US Federal Reserve increased interest rates in December for the first time in almost a decade, however that decision is starting to look premature. With investment markets showing plenty of volatility in the Christmas and New Year period, we could see the US reverse the previous increase sooner rather than later. No doubt the RBNZ will be watching closely.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand lowered interest rates in early December by another 25 basis points to bring the Official Cash Rate (OCR) to 2.5 per cent, the lowest the benchmark rate has been since it was introduced in 1999. This is good news for borrowers with banks now offering mortgage rates as low as 3.99 per cent. The Reserve Bank and market commentators have signalled that we may now be at the bottom in the rate cycle and that rates will eventually rise from here. However there are a number of reasons to suggest that rates could actually fall in 2016. Economic growth is slowing, in large part due to the lower dairy prices and the tapering off of the Christchurch rebuild. If the Auckland house price bubble bursts this year, the Reserve Bank may look to cushion the blow by reducing interest rates; mortgages at 20 times annual income are completely unsustainable.

Auckland’s strong economy and the booming tourism and retail sectors are all being cited as some of the major reasons for SkyCity Entertainment’s forecast of a first-half profit rise of up to 30 per cent. So many ways to impress with lamb K

iwis’ love affair with lamb is legendary and in spite of cooking styles changing, surveys show that love affair remains unchanged. Roast lamb with all the trimmings is still coming out top of the favourite meal list, with 42.4 per cent of people surveyed by Beef and Lamb New Zealand saying lamb was their preferred meat. On February 15 we celebrate national lamb day, an event that marks the first shipment of frozen sheep meat from Port Chalmers in Otago to London in 1882. One hundred and 33 years later we are still enjoying lamb and still claiming the roast as our Kiwi icon, but today lamb comes in many different cuts and is cooked in many different ways. The New Zealand beef and lamb website www.recipes.co.nz is a great source of inspiration.

Spiced lamb fillets and couscous 500g lamb loin fillets 3T Greek yoghurt 1/2 t rubbed mint 1/2 t garam masala 1/2 C couscous 1 red capsicum, finely sliced 1 yellow capsicum, finely sliced 1 red onion, peeled, finely sliced 2T chopped fresh mint 2T capers, drained 1t chilli sauce 1/2 t olive oil lemon wedges, to serve Spiced yoghurt sauce 1C Greek yoghurt 1t crushed garlic 2T chopped fresh mint 1/2 t paprika

■ Combine the lamb strips with the ginger, garlic, sugar, fish sauce and sesame oil. Refrigerate and marinate for 2-3 hours. ■ Soak eight bamboo skewers in water for 30 minutes, then thread the lamb on to the skewers. ■ Heat a barbecue or char-grill and cook the lamb 3-4 minutes each side, or until the lamb is cooked. ■ Serve on steamed jasmine rice, sprinkled with the toasted sesame seeds if using and with the dipping sauce on the side. ■ Dipping sauce: Combine all the ingredients together and spoon into small bowls to serve.

Tuscan roast lamb

■ Add sliced capsicums, onion, fresh mint, capers, chilli sauce and olive oil. ■ Mix together. Season to taste. ■ Spiced yoghurt: Mix all ingredients together well. Season to taste. ■ On a hot griddle pan or barbecue plate, cook lamb for two minutes on each side for rare or an extra minute for medium. ■ Leave to rest for five minutes. Slice thinly. ■ Serve lamb with couscous salad and lemon wedges.

Lamb curry 500g diced lamb shoulder 3T oil 1/2 cinnamon stick 2 bay leaves 4 cardamom pods 1 large onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2.5cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated

1/4 t cayenne pepper 3/4 C beef stock 1/2 t garam masala 2T fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped ■ Heat the oil in a heavy-based saucepan ■ When hot, add the cinnamon stick, bay leaves and cardamom pods. ■ Cook until aromatic, then add the onion and cook, stirring continuously until the onion begins to colour. ■ Add the garlic and ginger and cook for a further 30 seconds. ■ Add the lamb pieces and cook, stirring until the lamb is well coated in the spices. ■ Add the cayenne pepper, beef stock and 3/4 cup water and bring to a simmer. ■ Cover saucepan with a tightfitting lid and simmer gently for about an hour or until the lamb

is tender. ■ Stir through the garam masala and chopped coriander. ■ Remove the bay leaves, cinnamon stick and cardamom pods before serving. ■ Serve lamb curry with roti, cucumber raita and rice.

Ginger lamb satay and Thai dipping sauce 600g lamb steaks, cut into strips 1T finely chopped ginger 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1T brown sugar 1T fish sauce 3t sesame oil Dipping sauce 2T lime juice 2T sweet chilli sauce 2T chopped coriander 1 red chilli, seeded and finely chopped 1T toasted sesame seeds (optional)

1 leg of lamb 1/2 C red wine 1/4 C olive oil 2T basil pesto 1t minced garlic Topping 150g feta, crumbled 1/4 C sundried tomato paste or pesto 1/4 C chopped black olives 1T capers, rinsed few leaves chopped fresh basil or oregano ■ Pre-heat the oven to 190°C. ■ Line a baking or roasting dish with foil or baking paper. ■ With a sharp knife, make 8-10 shallow cuts on the top of the leg. ■ Mix together the wine, oil, basil and garlic and massage over the lamb. ■ Roast in the preheated oven for 30 minutes per 500g. ■ In the last 30 minutes of cooking time, mix all the topping ingredients together ■ Press on to the lamb. Return to the oven for the remaining cooking time. ■ Remove from the oven and rest for 20 minutes before carving.

■ Rub fillets in Greek yoghurt, mint and garam masala. ■ Leave to marinate for 15 minutes, or longer. ■ Cook couscous with 3/4 C of water until tender.

Ashburton’s very own Liam Kennedy-Clark has been eliminated from the Toyota Country Music Festival held in Tamworth, Australia. The 18-year-old country music star made it to the top 10 finalists for Australia’s largest music competition, but was unfortunately not one of the contestants selected for the top three. Held over the weekend and billed by promoters as “Australia’s most prestigious country music talent search” the event featured 10 of the country’s top emerging country music artists. The grand final of the superstar event is set to be held this Friday night.

The winner is set to receive a prize package including guaranteed performances at major festivals and events throughout Australia as well as a brand new car. The competition has been a stepping stone in the careers of some of the industry’s biggest names including Keith Urban, Lee Kernaghan, Luke Dickens and Kaylee Bell. However, Liam is still making his mark on the country music scene, according to his Facebook page he is busy with regular gigs and this year has already been a part of the Senior Academy of Country Music graduation concert. On top of this the young star has been working away on his EP.

Get ready to rock with the Carnivorous Plant Society Ashburton is about to be rocked by a futuristic Mexican fantasy band. The Carnivorous Plant Society was a band dreamed up by Auckland trumpet and keyboard player, Finn Scholes (right). Not only does it draw together some of Auckland’s elite violin, vibraphone, guitar, synthensizer, bass and drum players it also incorporates a visual element. Hand-drawn cartoons and the occasional Mexican wrestling

match are just a couple of the animated projections on offer. Guaranteed to “unleash the inner Latin in audiences” attendees should expect dancing in the aisles. Organised by Arts on Tour New Zealand the group will be in Ashburton for one night only on Saturday, February 20, from 7.30pm. In brief SBW back to NRL? Australian media are talking up the chances of Sonny Bill Williams returning to the NRL next year after his former club Sydney Roosters stepped up offloading players to free up its salary cap. The Sydney Daily Telegraph is speculating that the money saved by parting ways with State of Origin centre Michael Jennings will allow the Roosters to sign either Williams or Jarryd Hayne for the 2016 season. Of those two headline acts, they say Williams would be the most likely to end up at Bondi. - AAP

Bad news for Chiefs The Chiefs have been handed a double injury blow with Nepo Laulala and Dominic Bird facing long stints on the sideline. All Blacks tighthead prop Nepo Laulala will miss the entire 2016 season after sustaining a serious knee injury at training. Scans have revealed that Laulala has torn three ligaments in his right knee. He will undergo knee reconstruction and an expected recovery time is 12 months ruling the 24-year-old out of all rugby for the year. Bird will sit out the first 10 weeks of Super Rugby after fracturing his right foot. - NZME

Future looking bright Following his win at the national road championships in Napier, Ashburton cyclist Jason Christie spoke to Guardian sports reporter James Ford about his future goals and how it felt crossing the line in his first win at national elite level. Who has had the biggest influence on your cycling career? My biggest influence in my cycling career has to be myself. I’m the only one that can make myself get up, put my kit, shoes and helmet on, and go out the door and suffer in training in weather of -6 degrees and snow, up to anything of 45 degrees and sun. Behind the scenes, I would have to say Cam Whiting. He has been the best mentor and mate I could ever ask for, always there at the drop of a hat to answer

any question, or whatever, when things are going well or not. How did it feel to cross the line for your first national win at elite level? I feel pretty good, what a special day it was. It actually feels like a bit of a blur to be honest, but I’m definitely proud to have taken that title. It’s still slowly sinking in every day, I just keep thinking about little moments in the race and how it unfolded. Yeah I’m bloody stoked! What are your goals for the

rest of the season? Well you know, I’d love to be selected for the Elite Road World Champs, but I’m doubtful I will be taken. The way BikeNZ works is if you have a World Tour Team contract you’re up for selection and if you don’t you’re basically not. Even if I am the best in NZ, or, as I am currently ranked number one in the world in the UCI world ranking, I still most likely won’t make the cut for selection for the worlds, or even Rio, just

because of their political policy. For now I will focus on doing my best in the NZ champ’s jersey in all the big races I line up for with my team, like the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in two weeks’ time and the Herald Sun Tour in three weeks’ time, along with all the big races we do in Asia. * * * * * * Christie is now competing at the UCI New Zealand Cycle Classic, a five-day tour that begins today.

Henare, Boucher to take on major roles Former player Paul Henare has been named as the New Zealand Breakers head coach for the 2016-17 season, replacing current coach Dean Vickerman. Vickerman has coached the Breakers for the past three years, including the current season, after taking over from Andrej Lemanis in 2013.

Fellow Breakers great Dillon Boucher also moves into a major role, replacing CEO Richard Clarke. Both Henare and Boucher have had their playing numbers retired at the club following their stellar careers on court and both have since gone on to significant roles with the club.

Henare will take on the head coaching role next season with the experience of three seasons under Vickerman, two NZ NBL Championships as a head coach, and guiding the Tall Blacks as head coach of that programme for the past 12 months. “We have always spoken at this club about pathways, for players

but also for coaches,” he said. “I look forward to the opportunity to learn further in this new role, and to give something back to the club and to the basketball community,” Henare said. Boucher has been groomed to take on the manager role, working with Clarke to learn the commercial aspects of the club. - NZME

Former All Black Black Nathan Mauger has been appointed assistant coach of Japan’s new Super Rugby side the Sunwolves. The former Crusaders centre will work under his old team-mate and former Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett. Blatter still being paid FIFA’s Sepp Blatter may have been banned for eight years from the game but he is still receiving his president’s salary from world soccer’s governing body. Blatter was suspended for 90 days on October 8 and then banned from the game for eight years last month for ethics violations over a $2m payment FIFA made to Michel Platini with Blatter’s approval in 2011. But Blatter, who has been president of FIFA since 1998, will continue to be paid until a new president is elected, the spokesman Andreas Bantel said. - Reuters

Mharez off spot kicks Leicester City playmaker Riyad Mahrez, who has missed his last two penalties, is unlikely to take his side’s next spot-kick, manager Claudio Ranieri said. In brief Coach suspended Sri Lankan cricket is again embroiled in controversy with fast bowling coach Anusha Samaranayake suspended for two months over an alleged attempt to fix a test against the West Indies. The BBC reports he is accused of bringing in a man with no top-level cricketing experience to help the squad at training. The allegations centre around the first test in Galle in October, which Sri Lanka won by an innings and six runs. ‘I want to hear names’ By RoB FoRsaith Roger Federer regards the spectre of match-fixing as serious but the Swiss superstar is unhappy with speculation regarding the issue in tennis. A joint BBC-BuzzFeed report claimed 16 players, including “winners of grand slam titles”, had been “repeatedly flagged to the Tennis Integrity Unit” over the past decade. Johnson targets Nines tourney Shaun Johnson is desperate to play at the upcoming Auckland Nines for a number of reasons, not least of all the fact it was a target he set soon after breaking his ankle last year. The Warriors halfback is optimistic of playing at the third instalment of the Nines, which is at Eden Park on Waitangi weekend, as he makes his comeback from a serious ankle injury that coincided with the downturn of the Warriors’ 2015 season. He’s just as valuable as a nines player he was the tournament’s MVP in its first season in 2014 - and is also one of the faces of the tournament. “As he says in one advert, “come and watch all the stars play”, but a decision on whether his will be seen on the field has not yet been made. “I would be gutted [if I didn’t play nines] but I would only be gutted because it was a target I set when I first did the injury,” he said. “The surgeon said that should be plenty of time for me to come back and play it. “It’s a tournament I love being a part of and I think it’s important, given it’s in Auckland, that the Warriors do well. “We saw last year, especially after we lost in the quarter-final, the stadium emptied as soon as we lost. “As a club, we want to do well and put on a show. “There are a lot of people out there who want to watch players who are going to put on that show so hopefully I can be there.” It will also give fans a first look at a Warriors team with Johnson alongside new signings Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Issac Luke. The trio have played together at international level but there’s considerable interest in what they can do for a War-

riors outfit who have under-achieved and it will also take some pressure off Johnson to come up with most of the big plays. Coach Andrew McFadden is tweaking the Warriors’ gameplan to reflect what Luke and Tuivasa-Sheck offer, particularly Luke’s skillset at dummy-half, but he’s also keen to expose the pair to home fans at the Nines. “It’s a possibility,” he said of the prospect of his three big names playing the Nines. “There’s no doubt that if they are fit I would really like to play them. “It’s a great opportunity, particularly for Roger and Issac, to play in front of the home crowd and they will be pretty effective in the tournament as well. “We will wait and see but all three are tracking nicely. “There’s no doubt there’s more pressure on us in this tournament than anyone else. “I don’t know too many other clubs would put too much attention on it. “Obviously we do because of the circumstances, but I’m not going to put too much emphasis on it. “I would like to do well. We will put out a strong side but it’s not the be all and end all of our season. “We are certainly very focused on the NRL season - certainly I am.” As much as Johnson is keen on playing at the Nines, he’s mindful of the bigger picture. “I don’t want people to get the idea I am putting everything into this,” he said. “We have a long season ahead and that is still the priority. “If I’m not feeling right for it, if I’ve got any doubt in my head, I won’t play. “I’m not going to be silly about it.” - NZME

Local sprint car driver Matt Honeywell has got off to a flying start in 2016 with a first place finish in the New Zealand Sprint Car Grand Prix on January 9 in Cromwell.

The 39-year-old followed up his Grand Prix triumph with a second placing at the Salute to Goodie in Ruapuna aboard his Maxim sprint car on January 13. After a prolific start to the year, Honeywell’s luck ran out three
