Retailers in Ashburton and across the country will have no choice in being plastic-bag free by the middle of next year. Associate Minister for the Environment Eugenie Sage announced yesterday that cabinet had agreed to the proposed
regulations that would stop retailers selling or giving away single-use plastic bags. Some major retailers, such as Countdown, have been single-use plastic carrier bag free since October 15 and Countdown says the response from their customers has been overwhelmingly positive.
“Kiwis know how important it is that we protect the environment for generations to come and we are certain that the national phase-out will be well received,� said a Countdown spokesperson.

Festive spending rush is late, but now it’s all on By Sue NewmaN

It might have been a little late coming, but in the lead-up to Christmas Day Ashburton’s retailers say they’re heading for a season that will top last year in terms of money in the bank. Ashburton Arcade Health 2000 owner Bob McDonald said that in the last few days there had been quite a buzz around town and the streets were much busier. “It was just ticking away but now people seem to be in spending mode. If things carry on as they are we’ll be up on last year and that has to be good,” he said. With just five shopping days left, the arcade’s retailers were making sure they took advantage of every one of those, McDonald said. “From now until Christmas we’ll be open every day, we’re running right through from last Sunday.” In addition the arcade will be open for a late shopping night tonight. The inner town atmosphere had been given a boost this year by the extra effort that had gone into festive decorations, such as banners, the Baring Square Christmas tree and the art walk, he said. While the arcade takes a united approach to shopping hours in the lead up to Christmas, it’s a bit more difficult to get co-ordination along East Street said Paper Plus owner Terry McNabb.
His store is open seven days throughout the year, but over the past few days shopper space in store had been at a premium, he said. “When it rains, I love it, it brings people in.” Like McDonald, McNabb said the early Christmas period was quiet, but money that wasn’t spent
then was certainly being spent now, he said. “People have left it quite late, but now it’s all on. It’s been so busy we haven’t even had a chance to keep tabs on the best sellers so we can reorder. It looks at this stage as though it could be better than last year.” McNabb said that because of the
slow start to Christmas shopping he’d been surprised to look at his figures yesterday and find he was ahead. Inevitably online shopping was making inroads into some of the Christmas spend across all retail, but the numbers indicated there were still plenty of people wanting face-to-face shopping too, he said.
In an ideal world, East Street retailers would take the same kind of collective approach to pre-Christmas shopping hours he said, but over the years, in spite of plenty of effort by some to make it happen, it never quite did, McNabb said. “I guess retail is just a bit too fragmented in the East Street part of town.”

think of would be around privacy but with the easing in to it, it makes it easy for people.” The phase-out will apply to all new plastic shopping bags with handles that are made of plastic up to 70 microns in thickness. Stores run by the Briscoe Group, which operates Briscoes and Rebel Sport, have already begun phasing out single-use plastic bags across their stores, said group managing
director Rod Duke. “It has been a pretty easy process, there has been a lot of news about them and a lot spoken about and I believe the public have learnt to accept plastic bags are no more,” he said. “There has been a few bad noises from some people but they have been quiet compared to the good noises from people about the changes. Foodstuffs also plan to have sin-
gle-use plastic bags out of their stores prior to the ban date, with more than 430 stores across their New World, Pak’n’Save and Four Square supermarket brands. “Customers have been kept well informed as we move towards January 1 and we are doing everything we can to make sure the change goes smoothly from both an operational perspective at stores, and for customers,” a spokesperson said.

If you’re fed-up with commuting to Christchurch for work or appointments, Colin Porter has a solution. He’s set up a daily shuttle service between Ashburton and Christchurch that he’s hoping will build into a solid business. He’s done the research, crunched the numbers and believes there’s an opening for a service for both commuters and for people heading to appointments in the city. And that’s the market he’s out to capture. Porter is starting small, just one van, starting its Ashburton pickup route at 6.15am, Monday to Friday, with its last drop-off at 8.08am. It will then make the return trip to Ashburton. The afternoon service starts in Ashburton at 2.50pm with the last city drop-off at 4.40pm, arriving back in Ashburton at 7.07pm. There will be several collection and drop-off points in Ashburton, including two where car-parking arrangements have been made and a number of drop-off and collection points in the city. As the passenger numbers build Porter intends to put on more vans and more drivers. The service will return from Christchurch each morning, arriving back in Ashburton at 10.38. It will then leave again at 2.50pm arriving in Christchurch

start to build when people start returning from holiday. “The idea is to offer people an option to driving to the city, so they don’t have to take their car

Police are encouraging people to L.E.A.R.N how to stop burglaries ahead of the festive holiday season. tains information on these things as well as a survey on ways to check your property,” he said. The survey takes people through a checklist of things such as whether all locks to outside doors are deadlocks or strong lock bolts, or whether you keep your windows locked when they are shut. Other questions involve your garage, environment, when you go on holiday and other safe practices.
“It is just a way of going through things and if you can tick off a yes, that is reassuring, and if you tick a no, it highlights things you can potentially improve,” Dean said. In the past few months burglaries have been up and down, and when they happen, the “Ashburton factor” often has an effect. “We have such a low crime rate that when they do happen in clumps, as they often do, it allows us to see it we can do something
about it,” he said. Just because he is Ashburton’s top cop does not mean he can not be burglary aware at home either. “I have a lamp with a timer switch that turns it on to make it look like we are at home if we are ever away and it is things like that that mean you are not advertising you are away,” he said. “A new thing that we are seeing is also stuff like social media. I
know personally I don’t have anything that can link me on my personal accounts to where I live as that is something I want to keep private.” Another big thing the flyer promotes is the activities of Neighbourhood Support and the Ashburton Town Watch. “In the data we can see that the areas where these groups are active, we don’t see any overlap with burglaries occurring,” Dean said.

Turkey fails to cut the mustard on Christmas Day with pork or ham, lamb and beef the meat of choice. The game bird surprisingly missed the cut, as did chicken, for the top three meat selections in a poll of 1500 Christmas dining Kiwis by Retail Meat New Zealand. Pork and ham was the top meat cut on the Christmas dining table, winning 37 per cent of surveyed hearts and appetites, closely followed by the favourite go-to of lamb at 30 per cent and beef was the unexpected third most-loved meat option at 12 per cent. Trailing behind was turkey at fourth with 11 per cent of the vote and chicken was fifth with 7 per cent. For dessert, there was a clear winner with more than 71 per cent of those surveyed in the Great New Zealand Christmas Census picking pavlova. Trifle was next on the list and strawberries and cream rounded out the top three. This year’s Alto Butcher of the Year winner Riki Kerekere said the meat ranking stacked up with Christmas buying selections he had observed in his position overseeing the supply of meat to all Countdown stores
in the North Island. The results of the Christmas census tallied up with the products flying off the supermarket shelves, he said. “You couldn’t get more Kiwi than hot ham at Christmas. Equally, lamb is really popular at
this time of year.’’ Kerekere said Christmas followers wanted something special to treat their family on the dining table and it was hard to get past a leg of New Zealand lamb. Cooking methods of meat surveyed were dominated by
ovens and barbecues. In the census more than 91 per cent of those surveyed will be enjoying potatoes on the big day, 78 per cent will have a mixed salad, while just 34 of those surveyed (2 per cent) will be crunching on some kale.
Post-dining activities were opening presents (80 per cent), backyard games (48 per cent) and 40 per cent were intending to have a light sleep or “food coma’’. Amongst them, 16 golfing diehards were planning on fitting in a round of golf.

Brexit no-deal prep begins Britain’s government ramped up preparations for the possibility that the country could leave the European Union in 101 days without a divorce deal — putting soldiers on standby and warning thousands of businesses and millions of households to get ready for the worst. With the country’s departure set for March 29, it remains unclear whether British lawmakers will approve the divorce agreement that Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservative government has negotiated with the EU. The alternative, a “no-deal” Brexit, risks plunging the British economy into recession and touching off chaos at the borders. Maembers of May’s Cabinet agreed to activate all the government’s no-deal plans and advised the public to prepare for disruptions. Ministers insisted the steps were sensible. Some 3500 troops will be on standby to help deal with any disruptions, Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said. Businesses will receive a 100plus page online package to help them get ready. The British government has already published dozens of papers advising of possible “no-deal” disruptions to the economy and daily life, saying

There was even a warning that Britain could be at greater risk from falling space junk, because the UK will no longer receive data from the EU Space Surveillance and Tracking Program. The government has drawn up plans to charter boats to bring in essential goods in case supplies are disrupted. Some manufacturers have begun stockpiling parts and goods in anticipation of post-Brexit hiccups to trade.
But many businesses – especially smaller firms – have done little to mitigate the economic shock of leaving without a deal. The British Chambers of Commerce said that economic growth and business investment in 2019 were likely to be lower than previously forecast because of the uncertainty over Brexit. The British government and the EU sealed a Brexit deal last month, laying out the terms of the UK’s orderly departure and establishing an extendable transition period to give the two sides time to reach a permanent new trade relationship. But May postponed a parlia-
mentary vote on the deal last week when it became clear legislators would overwhelmingly reject it. She tried to win changes from the EU to sweeten the deal for reluctant lawmakers, but was rebuffed by the bloc, which insists the agreement can’t be reopened. May’s authority has also been shaken after a no-confidence vote from her own party last week. She won it, but saw more than a third of Conservative lawmakers vote against her. May insisted Monday she could win “clarification” from the EU to reassure sceptical lawmakers before Parliament votes on the deal during the week of January 14. Opposition legislators – and many members of May’s Conservative Party – remain opposed to the Brexit deal. But with Parliament divided on what should replace it the whole process is at an impasse. Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour Party, accused May of deliberately wasting time, delaying the vote to force Parliament to choose between her deal and no deal. Labour’s Brexit spokesman, Keir Starmer, said the no-deal plans were part of scare tactics designed to push lawmakers into backing May’s deal. – AP

Terror charges laid after market attack A man suspected of supplying the gun used in the Christmas market shooting attack that killed five people in Strasbourg has been handed preliminary terror charges, according to a French judicial official. The official, who is close to the investigation, says the individual appeared before a judge on Monday and was charged with criminal association with terrorists and possessing and supplying arms in connection

with a terrorist enterprise. The man is suspected of furnishing the weapon that alleged gunman Cherif Chekatt used in the December 11 attack, the judicial official said. He was remanded into custody. Chekatt, 29, died in a shootout with police in Strasbourg late last week. Two other people were arrested and detained as part of the terror investigation being
carried out by the Paris prosecutor’s office. They were also suspected of playing a role in supplying the firearm, the official said. Their arrests bring the number of suspects in custody since the attack to three; Chekatt’s parents and two of his brothers were questioned by police last week and released. The death toll increased to five on Sunday night after a Polish man died of his wounds
in a Strasbourg hospital. Barto Orent-Niedzielski, 36, lived in the city, where he worked at the European Parliament and as a journalist. The other casualties include a tourist from Thailand and an Italian journalist. According to reports, Orent-Niedzielski fought the shooter and stopped him from entering a crowded club, possibly preventing more deaths. – AP

Parents jailed for starving boy in cupboard Two Texas siblings saved their 5-year-old brother from certain death after he was starved and locked in a tiny cupboard for months by his stepmother. Cody and Allison Frank bravely testified against their mother Tammi Bleimeyer in a chilling abuse trial. Bleimeyer’s children, now 21 and 19, revealed how their stepbrother Jordan would go days without food and would be kept caged like a dog underneath the stairwell inside their home. According to Jordan’s step-siblings, they would secretly feed him bread in a bid to keep him alive. Their father, 29-year-old Brad
Bleimeyer, beat, starved and tasered Jordan “for no reason at all” and slammed his head against a wall. Cody and Allison tried many times to seek help for Jordan, revealing they contacted to police, teachers and friends multiple times about the chilling abuse. In court it was revealed how Jordan had necessities ripped away from him over time. Food, clothes and even his blanket and pillow were banned, and the 5-year-old was forced to wear a nappy while inside the tiny cupboard surrounded by nails and exposed wires.
It is alleged his father drugged the 5-year-old to keep him quiet when they had visitors. Jordan was finally rescued in March 2014 when Cody freed him from the cupboard and raised the alarm for help. When doctors first examined Jordan, he weighed just 13kg and was compared to a Holocaust survivor. Cody said he was horrified at how much Jordan had deteriorated. “The day I opened up that closet, Jordan was in the worst shape I had ever seen him in. “I had been in a huge fight with Brad so I was already in trouble and both adults were
outside of the house so I just saw an opportunity and I opened up the closet to let Jordan out. “But what I found was truly shocking – he was in his diaper, he didn’t have any clothes on. “His face was all caved in, bruises all over, marks on him. His mouth was foaming. I have never in my life seen anything as bad as that. “I kind of paused for a second and then I just freaked out. “If we hadn’t got him out that day I don’t think he would have survived.” Tammi was jailed for 28 years and her husband for 15 years. - NZME
Laverne & Shirley star dies Penny Marshall, who indelibly starred in the top-rated sitcom Laverne & Shirley before becoming the trailblazing director of smash-hit big-screen comedies such as Big and A League of Their Own, has died. She was 75. Michelle Bega, a spokeswoman for the Marshall family, said that Marshall died in her Los Angeles home night due to complications from diabetes. Marshall earlier fought lung cancer, which went into remission in 2013. “Our family is heartbroken,” the Marshall family said in a statement. In Laverne & Shirley, the nasal-voiced, Bronx-born Marshall starred as Laverne DeFazio alongside Cindy Williams.

The casual Christmas shopper W
elcome to the confessions of a casual Christmas shopper. Casual in the sense that it’s five days out from the big event and I’m yet to walk into a store with the thought of buying someone a present. Yes, I’m one of those people. Good thing is, I’m not alone. A quick survey of a few people in the Guardian office and there are quite a few who are yet to partake in the art that is heading out to buy gifts for other people at the same time as hundreds of others are doing the same. I like birthdays, they’re easy. You don’t have to fight with
someone in the middle of the aisle over who is getting the last DVD of Love Actually (Merry Christmas, Mum) off the shelf. You’re out on your own and not doing anything that anyone else is doing as well – the serenity is golden. But, at some point in the next
few days, I suppose – I’ll have to chuck the armour on, put the head down and go on the full charge and try and get as many presents sorted as is humanely possible in one 10 -minute stop at a shop and then be done with it. Each year I tell myself I’m going to be more organised than the last. My Christmas presents are going to be brought during the year, stashed carefully away from prying eyes and then when December rolls around, I’m not going to be stuck in the same position. Yet, each year I just never seem
to get around to it. There’s always plenty of time left to get it done until there’s no more time to get it done. Frustratingly, that time is now. How good to hear though that some local businesses are going to do their bit to try and encourage some good old-fashioned shopping locally this year with extended hours and extra days of operation. It’s been good to see the Ashburton CBD alive with people again over the past few weeks. The cafes have seemed a little fuller, the wait to get a park even longer than normal and the foot traffic pounding around the
place is quite noticeable. It is just a shame that we can’t see that all year round – but that’s a debate for another day. Christmas is a great time of the year, a really special and relaxing time of the year, unless you’re like me and leave everything to the last minute, including the Christmas shopping. If you are one of those people, I’ll no doubt see you somewhere about the place on Monday. I’ll be the frazzled-looking chap, walking around aimlessly lamenting my procrastination over the past 12 months and wondering why I didn’t do this earlier.

And that’s a wrap for this year! S
ometime around 18 months ago, a random encounter with Guardian owner Bruce Bell, on the stairs of Somerset House, resulted in what has become this fortnightly column. To be honest I’d thought about the idea of a column myself, privately, but here was an offer to make it a reality. “What would you like me to write about Bruce?” “Life,” was Bell’s concise reply. That left me a fairly open mandate and I’ve been surprised frankly, how readily thoughts and ideas have come to mind. There was a time when I thought I’d run dry after all the pet issues had been dealt to, but in this game of life, there is always something new to be brought to the fore. So I thought for this final opinion piece before the break, I’d cast back over some of 2018’s good and not so good, and dare to venture an eye on the new year ahead. Let’s deal to the awkward bit first. With a rider that I deal in issues, not personalities. Politicians at both national and local level enjoy my support or otherwise based on their actions, not their personalities. Nor their party or crony affiliations. I still want to be sick in my mouth every time I pass that closed information centre. A brilliant little facility lies in limbo, dead, lifeless when it should be humming and buzzing. I’ll just say this.

PETE’S PERSPECTIVE
If information centres were so past their best use date, why are there still dozens and dozens of them alive and thriving around the country? This will be an issue again in 2019. I will vote on it and I am hoping significant others will too. I know where there’s a spare $300,000 plus to fund it. We had a change of chief executive at the council this year and on that appointment I have placed a lot of hope. CEO’s wield a lot of power and influence and I have had occasion in years gone by to meet with and work under Hamish Riach in the days I was doing pre-match and halftime MC work at AMI stadium for the Crusaders home games. He struck me then, and still does, as a thoroughly professional, capable, likeable and personable manager. I was excited to see him land the role at the ADC and after being assured by the outgoing that there was no future in his eyes for the information centre, I have pinned fresh hope on Riach. Time will tell. Big ups to the council for at
least setting a course to improve the festive season in Ashburton. I feel it is a journey rather than a destination and commend those responsible for the positive energies expended these past two seasons. It can improve further with experience and I hope it will. You know, we have the bones of a great town. The future is bright if we stay the course and pay attention to the details. We have the cake, but we need the icing. The cake includes, in no particular order: ■ The EA Networks Centre ■ The Ashburton Trust Event Centre ■ The Art Gallery and Heritage Centre ■ Lake Hood and Mt Hutt ■ A magical hinterland ■ Enterprising businesses ■ Superb geographical location ■ And by and large, great people, passionate about our area . . . To name just a few. Yes there are issues, but they can be addressed and there is plenty of positive stuff “in the pipe”. The Government has delivered its promise to farmers that it will step up compliance for an electronic animal identification scheme with 27 new compliance officers. After graduating from training in Christchurch last Friday, the officers will begin working with farmers to educate them on their obligations for the National Animal Identification and Tracing (Nait) scheme. They will also issue infringement notices for non-compliance of cattle and deer movements among farmers. Throughout the early stages of the mycoplasma bovis response Minister for Primary Industries (MPI) Damien O’Connor had been disappointed with the record keeping of animal movements which had complicated tracing the disease on farms. However, last month he said farmers were upping their onfarm biosecurity by making greater use of the scheme. MPI was also taking a harder line on enforcement. Animal welfare and Nait compliance manager Gray Harrison said the new officers were part of a stepped-up effort to educate
farmers about their Nait obligations and enforce compliance with the scheme. “The new officers will be located throughout the country helping farmers use Nait consistently and taking action when non-compliance is detected.’’ Since the start of the year the MPI team has issued 97 infringement notices to farmers for failing to comply with Nait.
“In addition, OSPRI, which manages the Nait scheme, has issued more than 600 letters to farmers about non-compliance.’’ Harrison said there has been a steady increase in animal movements being recorded through Nait. “We’re pleased to see there has been an almost 20 per cent increase in the number of animal movements recorded this year

compared with the same period in 2017. “It is essential all farmers, including lifestylers, register their cattle and deer in Nait and record all animal movements.’’ Harrison said a well-functioning Nait scheme was a vital part of the national biosecurity system as it helped MPI respond to and manage animal diseases, such as M. bovis.
Changes were being made by MPI and OSPRI to improve the scheme and ensure it was fit for the future, he said. Submissions closed on November 19 for potential changes to the NAIT Act and regulations by MPI to improve the scheme. OSPRI is making operational changes which include making the system faster and easier to use.

Dairy farmers watched approvingly as dairy commodity prices rose for the second Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction in a row to stop a series of losses trailing back to May. Prices lifted 1.7 per cent overall from two weeks ago at the final auction for the year on December 18. This is the second increase since prices started their decline in May with the first turnaround of 2.2 per cent recorded at the December 4 auction. At the latest event, prices increased for all commodities except rennet casein which fell 2.1 per cent to about $7385 a tonne or $US5056/t.The key ingredient of whole milk powder was virtually unchanged at a slight price rise of 0.3 per cent at $US 2674. NZX analyst Robert Gibson said regular grade whole milk powder to ship in February was also slightly up on the GDT auction. “This result was likely due to higher volumes [up 2.3 per cent] on offer compared with the previous event, preventing any further increase in price,’’ he said. Anhydrous milkfat (AMF) increased 4 per cent at $US4936 a tonne and butter 4.9 per cent at $US3928/t. Volumes were down
for both products compared with the previous GDT auction. Skim milk powder was up 3.4 per cent at $US2042. Gibson said the skim milk powder result was in line with market expectations leading into the auction. The tighter availability of stocks on offer compared with the previous event likely contributed to the increase. Over the second half of 2018, good availability of global stocks has helped to keep skim milk powder prices steady. At the last auction prices rose for all commodities except cheddar, with buttermilk powder jumping 16.9 per cent for an average price of $US2973/t. No buttermilk powder was offered at the latest event. Despite the small GDT lift, milk production pressure has pushed Rabobank to lower its farm gate milk price forecast to $6.25 a kilogram of milksolids. This fits within Fonterra’s forecast range of $6-$6.30/kg, revised on December 6. The bank says overseas milk supply growth might be modest, but exceptionally strong domestic milk production in recent months has resulted in Oceania commodity prices drifting lower. At the auction 184 bidders bought 36,181 tonnes, compared with slightly more product sold at the last event.

Consumer confidence on the rise By Paul McBeth
Consumer confidence rose from a six-year low in the lead-up to Christmas, as cheaper petrol and low mortgage rates left more in household budgets, the latest Westpac McDermott Miller survey shows. The consumer confidence index rose 5.6 points to 109.1 in the December quarter, unwinding all of September’s decline, but still below the 111.3 long-run average level. Consumers were more upbeat about both their current situation and their future outlook, with the present conditions index up 4 points at 111.5 and the expected conditions index rising 6.7 points to 107.5. A reading above 100 indicates optimists outnumber pessimists. Westpac New Zealand senior economist Satish Ranchhod said two major factors supported the bigger spending appetite. “The first is the fall in petrol prices in recent months, which has put money back into the pockets of many households,” he said. “Mortgage rates have also taken a step down since our last survey, and there’s been a related firming
in housing markets in some parts of the country.” Petrol prices spiked in October as a weaker kiwi dollar and higher global oil prices pushed up the cost of imported fuel. That triggered a sharp response from the Government to fast-track new powers for the Commerce Commission to investigate whether the three major fuel companies are rorting consumers. However, since then the kiwi dollar has firmed and international oil prices have eased, giving some relief at

Former staff of failed Mt Wellington manufacturer, Precision Foundry, have cried foul over the events leading up to the company’s receivership. Some contacted the Herald to express dismay at the outcome and questioned events leading up to the company’s failure, with one alleging production has already moved to the Philippines. Management said workers were paid three week’s holiday pay before the receivers were appointed. Insolvency specialists KordaMentha said Grant Graham and Neale Jackson have been appointed joint receivers of MFL, which operates the foundry at Mt Wellington, producing specialist metal components for a range of industries. The foundry, which has operated from the site since 1941, employs 85 people. Precision Foundry, formerly Masport Foundries, was taken over in October 2014 by private equity firm Challenge Partners. Challenge Partners director Paul Ayers said in a text message to the Herald that Precision Foundry had reached a tipping point when its second largest customer cancelled an order and its landlord required expenditure to be made on the building. “While we are very disappointed that Precision Foundry has gone into receivership, we are pleased that Pacific Foundry was able to pay three weeks’ holiday pay to its staff before the receivers were appointed,” he said. Ayers said that two plant closures last year meant that the company was only producing at 60 per cent of its usual production. “Faced with this, some customers demanded security of alternative supply and arrangements were made to support those customers
by having those alternative manufacturers available,” he said. Without the alternative manufacturers, Precision Foundry would have been in a worse financial position, he said. The receivers said they were working with management to consider the company’s options and that they would write to staff to confirm their individual entitlements. E tu says the union and its members have been blind-sided by the receivership. A manager yesterday notified the union of the receivership by phone, but so far there is no official confirmation, says Ron Angel, E tu industry co-ordinator. The firm’s workers had been sent on leave for the Christmas break without being told about the receivership. “We are deeply appalled that the employer has done this, knowing full well this was coming and that their workers didn’t know. Nor did the union,” Angel said. “This is a pretty sad end to a company which has traded for about 100 years,” Angel said. The company is the country’s leading manufacturer of cast ductile and alloy iron, from its Mt Wel-
lington plant. It now operates under the MFL name, pours several thousand tonnes annually of high-quality iron castings, most of which are then machined and/or coated prior to final dispatch. These are exported globally and MFL products can be found in many areas of Australasian equipment manufacture. Ayers said the company was also challenged by the high New Zealand dollar. Tight margins also meant the company was unable to reinvest in the ageing plant, he said. “MFL has exhausted its financial reserves. “We have absolutely tried our hardest but ran out of options to get through.” Challenge Partners was set up in 2012 by Ayers, a former British Navy Officer and Myles Cooper. The fund targets “tired” industrial businesses with potential and investors buy a “seat”, requiring a loan of $650,000 for 10 years. Other businesses in the portfolio include agriculture cultivation equipment manufacturer Fieldmaster, plastics engineering firm LEP and Shuk Engineering. – NZME

bake or 150°C conventional bake. Lamb: Heat a little oil in a large heavy-based frying pan over a very high heat. Pat the lamb dry with a paper towel, trim any fat and season with a little salt and pepper. Add 2-3 chops to the pan and cook until browned on one side. Turn over and cook for another few minutes. Transfer to a warmed plate and repeat with the remaining chops. Discard any fat from the pan and return to a medium heat. Add a little oil and the garlic, onion, anchovies, oregano and rosemary. Cook for 7-10 minutes until the onion is soft. Add the tomato paste, tinned tomatoes, chilli powder, stock and sugar. Stir to combine and nestle the chops in the mixture so they’re covered. Bring to a boil then turn off the heat straight away. If your pan is ovenproof, cover and cook in the oven for 3 hours. If not, transfer everything to a covered casserole dish before placing in the oven.
■ With 15 minutes remaining, add the olives and capers. ■ Remove from the oven, stir, and then check the seasoning. If the sauce seems a little thin, remove the lamb then simmer rapidly in an uncovered saucepan for 5-10 minutes to thicken it. ■ Mash: Steam or simmer the kumara pieces in a covered pot until tender – about 15-20 minutes. ■ Drain the water off and place back over a low heat, uncovered, for a few minutes to evaporate the excess moisture. Add the butter, parmesan and parsley, and mash well to combine. Season to taste and keep warm. ■ To serve: If you like, you can pull the meat off the bones before you serve it. Spoon some mash into warmed serving bowls or plates, then top with meat and a few spoonfuls of the sauce. Sprinkle with parsley, parmesan and a splash of balsamic vinegar. Age Concern Ashburton Age Concern was delighted to have a full complement of attendees at their recent Confident Driving for Mature Drivers Course. We have another planned for Friday February 15 to cater for prospective clients, as well as the extensive waiting list. All enquiries welcomed at our office 3086817. The Executive Committee were pleased to host a large gathering of members to an afternoon of Christmas entertainment last Thursday. Items from Hip Hop for seniors and Age Concern’s 206 Club, combined with Pass the Parcel, Carol signing and afternoon tea contributed to a very enjoyable occasion. A reminder that Total Mobility Assessments are always available at the office, as are gardeners, handymen and concerns re advocacy and Elder Abuse – phone 3086817. The office closes on Friday December 21 at 2.30pm and reopens Monday January 7.
Ashburton Bowling Club A good attendance at the inhouse Dorothy Cup made it a great night’s bowling with Roy Keeling, Ray Suttie and Maurice Wilson taking out the honours with 2 wins and 9 ends, second was John Kewish, Paul Borrow and Reg Diamond 2nd 2 wins and 7 ends, 3rd was Wendy Suttie, Don Ross and Heather Gray 1 win 1 draw. On Sunday the Milsom Cup was played in good conditions with the team of C Fowls J Drayton and G Clark winning with 4 wins 33 ends, 2nd was R McGarry, D Hopkins and J Davies 3 wins 1 draw, 3rd was R Gutberlet, M Quinn and M Anderson 3 wins 28 ends. 4th was R Tonks, I Kaye and B Holdom 3 wins 23 ends. Saturdays Rover saw Charles Rooke Trevor Watson and Colin Cross winning with 2 wins and a draw. At Temuka Wendy Suttie, Heather Goodall and Wendy Herriott managed to win the Temuka Ladies Triples, well done to all those players. The next big day at the club will be The Lowery Cup for men’s Singles on Saturday, then the Cotular Classic over 2 days on December 29 & 30. Ashburton Combined Friendship Club Notes from the Ashburton Combined Friendship Club Christmas meeting December 11, 2018. President Errol welcomed approximately 55 members and partners to our Christmas Lunch at The Stables, Tinwald on Tuesday December 11. Several apologies were noted and there were two visitors. After pre-lunch socialising members sat down to a nice lunch provided by the establishment. The raffle was drawn after the meal and Jill, Bruce and Roberta were the lucky winners. We did not have a guest speaker so after the meal John Davis played music to accompany the

The festive tables gave us an immediate awareness of the Christmas spirit that surrounds us all. Volunteers were requested to assist as gate keepers and to man the BBQ at the Ashburton Christmas race meet-

Ashburton Golf Club The lovely Sharon Carlson shot the lights out on Saturday grabbing a whopping 43 points and in doing so picked up the Ladies Christmas salver and a bottle of Christmas cheer, well done. The equally lovely (at least that’s what his mum says) Perry Hunt was firing on all cylinders shooting 42 points to pick up the Men’s Salver and a bottle of Gin for Linda. Now obviously, Perry’s 42 points sounds very impressive, but anyone who has played with the fella knows the journey to his final destination is never a smooth one, and luckily enough I was one of his co-pilots on Saturday. The round started on number 10 where he gets 2 shots, he smokes a 300 metre drive dead centre, pitches a wedge to 5 metres, lips out the birdie putt, tap in par for 4 points. Not bad for a 22 handicapper. He managed to snaffle another four 4 pointers around the course, mixed in with 3 none scoring holes and a near gin shot on the second fairway where I reckon the back draft from the club just missing, moved the ball, rather than any contact. Always fun playing with Perry, every shot is like Forest Gump’s prover-

During the evening a collection of non-perishable foods was donated to Maree O’Neill on behalf of St Vincents De Paul for their Food Bank. The Pakeke Craft ladies displayed a collection bial box of chocolates. I hope Linda appreciated the gin. In the Property Brokers Shootout qualifying. Gaby Jansen has booked his spot in the final already as he sits proudly on top with 83 points. He should be a major player in the final after his victory two years ago. Greig Sparrow and Gordy Crawford also look fairly safe with 79 points each, but nobody will worry about them in the final they both seem to have “Early Exit” written all over them. We have qualifying round 3 this Saturday, still time to enter, with another 3 rounds to go after this week. If you a travelling this Christmas, drive carefully and come home safe. If you are staying close, the course will be open, pop down for a game and join in the fun. The venue for this year at the Aviation Museum area at the airport was obviously a good choice, with much to see. $10,000 has been donated to Dementia Canterbury for use in the Mid Canterbury area. A reminder was given for the upcoming Waitaned by 53 members and opened with a quiet acknowledgement of the passing of Cam Ellis. President Barry Quantock then inducted two new members to our club, Kate Syme and Clarrie Brake. Roger Lake gave early notice of a bus trip to Christchurch planned for February 28, 2019 and is open to husbands, wives and friends. Russell Small then gave a mini talk on the meaning of ‘halal killing’. With one quarter of the world’s population being Muslim, exporters must cater for this huge market, and halal killing of livestock is an essential part of it. During his time as H.R. Manager for Alliance Group meat company Russell recruited many Muslim workers to fill this role. This required much travel to Muslim countries, particularly Fiji, and through this he forged many life-long friendships with Muslim families. The work Alliance Group offers these people gives them an important economic boost when they return home. Following a morning tea appropriate to Christmas, members were treated to piano recitals and choir singing by the Ashburton Electronic Keyboard Club.

Netherby WI December Meeting Netherby WI held a successful end of year pot luck meal on Monday 10th December. An excellent turnout of members attended and enjoyed the wide variety of mains and dessert. Father Christmas made an appearance and handed out gifts that were brought in by members and randomly distributed. We also enjoyed trying to work out anagrams that had a Christmas theme and another game passing a card from left to right when the story told us to. Raffles were won by Joan Campbell and Wendy Petrie. The only competition was a home-made Christmas decoration which was won by Molly Amos. The evening was completed with a cup of tea and a piece of Christmas cake. Wishing you all a joyous Christmas and all the best for 2019.
Ashburton Bridge Club Most slams require 30 plus points between the two hands, but that is not always the case, as this deal from Summer Bridge so aptly demonstrates. Whether South, the declarer, with his 11 points, chooses to open 1 Spade or not, most North/Souths will find their Spade fit and bid to 4 Spades, game contract, requiring 10 tricks. Should South choose not to open the bidding, West will pass, North will open 1 Club, and the final contract should be the same. However, East may overcall Hearts or Diamonds, or use the “take out double”, and East/West are going to contest this auction. Their competitive interference is quite a deterrent to the likelihood of North/South bidding to the slam contract of 6 spades, although the North hand can be revalued up to 18 points once the Spade fit is established. Wests best lead is the Diamond A, as that immediately takes out one of dummy’s Spades with a ruff. As soon as North’s gem of a hand goes down as dummy, South realises that as long as both defenders follow suit to 2 rounds of Clubs, his losing Diamonds can be safely discarded on North’s long club suit. The challenge is to play 3 rounds of trumps to take care of West’s 3 Spades, while, at the same time, having a trump in dummy to deal with a second lead of Diamonds, when the Club Ace takes a trick. To do this, declarer needs to set up the Clubs before attacking the Spade suit, and as the cards lie, it is successful.

Mother of all challenges Serena Williams isn’t the only former champion and world No.1 gunning to win the Australian Open and join the exclusive ranks as a tennis super-mum. If she prevails next month, Victoria Azarenka will dedicate a third open triumph to two-yearold Leo after winning a bitter and traumatic custody battle that will allow her son to travel with her to Australia for the first time. “I don’t know if it will happen in a couple of weeks or whenever but that’s definitely my goal and it will mean a lot to me,” Azarenka told AAP ahead of her quest to join Margaret Court, Evonne Goolagong and Kim Clijsters as the only mothers in 50 years of professional tennis to win grand slam singles crowns. With the courts previously not permitting Leo to leave California, Azarenka abandoned the tour for six months before returning in March. After falling out of the top 1000, the Belarusian has climbed back to world No. 51 and also reached this year’s Wimbledon mixed doubles final to leave her full of hope for 2019. Azarenka will launch her season at the Brisbane International from December 30 before teaming with men’s world No.4 Alexander Zverev and French great Henri Leconte at the World Tennis Challenge in Adelaide on January 7-8. “I’ve worked really hard to prepare for this year,” she said.
Pieters to return World Cup of Golf champion Thomas Pieters will return to Australia to contest the World Super 6 Perth tournament in February. European tour star Pieters is already well known to fans down under after combining with countryman Thomas Detry to hold off Australia’s Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith and win the World Cup for Belgium in Melbourne in November. Perth Glory will be without skipper Diego Castro for Friday night’s blockbuster against Sydney FC, but defender Matthew Spiranovic is a sneaky chance to return. Castro missed last week’s 2-0 A-League win over Newcastle after experiencing hamstring tightness at training in the lead up to the game. The 36-year-old missed the first four rounds of the season after injuring his other hamstring, but his latest setback isn’t as serious. Cheika to stay as Wallabies coach Rugby Australia has confirmed Michael Cheika will lead Australia to next year’s World Cup but from now on will work under the supervision of Scott Johnson, who takes a new role as Australia’s director of rugby. Cheika was under pressure after the Wallabies won only four of 13 tests in 2018 – their worst record in 60 years. But Rugby Australia has kept faith in Cheika’s leadership, with chief executive Raelene Castle saying “he’s started something, he wants to finish it.” Johnson, who is returning to Australia after working in the United States and Britain, most recently as Scotland’s director of rugby, will take up his position officially in mid-March. But he and Cheika will meet

Mourinho’s career at crossroads Wanted: A coach to restore Manchester United to its former status as a major force in European football. It was a task that proved beyond even Jose Mourinho. United brought an end to Mourinho’s turbulent 2½-year spell at the storied English club by firing him on Tuesday, an inevitable move that follows a pattern of bitter endings at the Portuguese coach’s recent teams. “Be careful,” Mourinho said to reporters and photographers through the open window of a car that whisked him away from the city-center hotel where he lived throughout his time at United. Indeed, these are worrying times for both United, which is arguably at its lowest point since the departure of long-time manager Alex Ferguson in 2013, and Mourinho, whose illustrious coaching career is at a crossroads as critics question if his abrasive approach, on and off the field, still suits modern-day football. United said it will not hire a permanent replacement for Mourinho until the offseason. The club will soon appoint a caretaker manager for the remainder of the season and a page on United’s website suggested it will be former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Under a video of Solskjaer celebrating after scoring the winning goal for United in the 1999 Champions League final, a post read : “Solskjaer becomes our interim manager, 20 seasons after clinching the Treble with THAT goal at Camp Nou...”
Down and out, Jose Mourinho. No official announcement has been made, however. The end for Mourinho at English football’s most prestigious club came two days after a 3-1 loss at fierce rival Liverpool, the latest reminder of just how far United has slumped behind the top teams in the Premier League and Europe. It was a result that left United sixth in the Premier League, 19 points off the lead after 17 games and, perhaps more significantly, 11 points off the top four in the race to secure Champions League qualification for
next season. It is United’s worst 17-game start to a league campaign since the 199091 season. “The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future,” United said in a three-line statement released after Mourinho was told of his fate in a face-to-face meeting with executive vice chairman Ed Woodward. United won two titles in Mourinho’s first season – the English League Cup and the Europa League – but failed to capture a
trophy in his second season, although runner-up spot in the league was its highest finish since Ferguson left. Mourinho has historically encountered problems in his third season in charge at clubs he has managed, and it was no different at United. His relationship with Paul Pogba, United’s record signing at $116 million and the marquee arrival in Mourinho’s reign, appeared broken following a spat that started in the offseason. Mourinho has also publicly criticised other players, including Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial, during his reign. By the end, it felt as if Mourinho was unloved and increasingly alienated. Mourinho, who oversaw the outlay of $470 million on players while at United, also appeared to have a fractious relationship with Woodward especially since the club’s board failed to back his wish to sign a central defender in the offseason. United has already conceded more goals in the league (29) than it did in all of last season. Then there was United’s pragmatic and often-ponderous style of play under Mourinho that always seemed at odds with the team’s preference down the years for free-flowing, attacking play. Whoever replaces Mourinho will take over a team that reached the last 16 of the Champions League, where it will play Paris Saint-Germain over two legs in February and March. - AP

Rain rewarded the persistence and determination of batsmen Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews, washing out most of the final day of the first cricket test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand yesterday to allow Sri Lanka to claim a well-earned draw. After batting through all of the fourth day in a historic partnership in which both made centuries, Mendis and Mathews survived just under an hour – all the rain allowed yesterday – to ensure the two-test series remains level ahead of the second test at Christchurch from December 26. Mendis and Mathews came together near stumps on the third day when Sri Lanka was 13-3 in its second innings after trailing by 296 on the first innings in which New Zealand made 578 in reply to its 282. They were still together more than a day later when heavy rain forced the abandonment of play on the final day. Sri Lanka’s third wicket had fallen in the seventh over and at the close of play Mendis and Mathews had just faced the 115th over of Sri Lanka’s innings. Mendis was 141 not out, Mathews was 121 not out and the pair had put on 274 runs – the best for the fourth wicket by a Sri Lanka pair against New Zealand – to leave Sri Lanka only nine runs short of making New Zealand bat again. On their way to a match-saving partnership, Mendis and Mathew became the first batsmen to bat throughout a full day of a test in New Zealand without a wicket to fall, and the first to do so anywhere in the world in almost a decade. Their innings and partnership came at significant moments in both careers.
Mendis made an outstanding beginning in his test career with scores of 176 against Australia, 194 and 196 against Bangladesh and 102 against the West Indies within his first 25 tests. But he had only two half centuries in his next 15 innings and, while his talent was never doubted, there had been questions over whether he could prosper in tests on raw talent alone. He answered that question resoundingly at the Basin Reserve with an innings of patience, determination and pure technique. Mendis said after the fourth day he took inspiration from Mathews who showed he was willing to be take the ball on his body rather than surrender his wicket. “(Mathews) got hit twice on the body and he came up to me and told me ‘hit the ball somehow, even if it has to be with your body’. When I saw him playing like that, I also thought ‘there’s no way I’m giving away my wicket’.” When rain stopped play yesterday, Mathews had batted 7-1/2 hours and Mendis eight minutes more to change the course of the test. “We showed a lot of character throughout the five days,” Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal said. “It’s not an easy task when the opposition get a lead of almost 300. “(Mathews) has done really well in the last four or five five-day games. He’s an experienced player and every time he goes to bat we want some runs from him. Ashburton Swim Team members Hannah King, 12, and Lucie Hood, 11, were selected for a Swimming Canterbury squad to travel to Invercargill for the Southland Championships and both produced some outstanding results. King was selected for the bronze squad and came away with results that showed just why she was selected for the team. Her first event was the 800m freestyle where she gained third placing with a good personal best time, and after that she competed in the 400m individual medley and came fourth with another personal best time. Up next was the 100m breaststroke where she gained a silver medal, followed by another bronze in the 200m breaststroke. King made the top 10 in all her other events with new personal bests along the way, and was selected for an exhibition Canterbury relay team. Hood was selected for the Canterbury talent ID squad and also proved her selection, medalling in all of her events in the 11 years and under category. Out of 11 events, 10 were personal best times, with Hood gaining six gold medals, three sil-
vers and two bronzes. Also away in one of the Canterbury squads in recent days was Blake Farr, 15, who travelled with the silver squad to Cambridge for a three-day camp followed by racing over two days. Bree Middleton, 15, was also in action, travelling to Melbourne with the gold squad and competing in the Victorian State Championships. She came away with a bronze in the 100m freestyle and a new personal best time. She also took four other top 10 placings. Ashburton Swim Team head coach Shane Jones said he was extremely pleased with the results, and the hard work and dedication that had led to the swimmers’ selections, and the results that followed. Canterbury pathway squads start at the talent ID squad for kids aged 11 and over. Bronze is for the top 12 females and top 12 males in Canterbury aged 13 to 15 years, while silver is selected by using the best FINA points in an Olympic event for ages 13-15 years. The gold squad – for 15-18 year olds – is also selected using the best FINA points in an Olympic event during the qualifying period. Platinum is the highest level – open age group swimmers – and was for those whose FINA points are over 680.
Ireland lock Iain Henderson looks set to miss at least half of the Six Nations after surgery on a torn ligament in his thumb on Monday. His Ulster province expected him to be sidelined for about 10 weeks. Henderson scored two tries for Ulster on Friday in beating Scarlets 30-15 in the European Champions Cup. By having the surgery now, Henderson hopes to be well recovered by the time of the Rugby World Cup in Japan in September. He stands to miss Six Nations games in February against England, Scotland, and Italy. He could be available in March to face France and Wales. - AP
Black Caps great Brendon McCullum was left unsold in the latest Indian Premier League auction while Martin Guptill and Lockie Ferguson were able to get contracts for the 2019 season. A number of New Zealand players were avaliable at auction but were also left unsold including Corey Anderson, Jimmy Neeshamm Glenn Phillips and Luke Ronchi. McCullum has played in every edition of the IPL since 2008. This year his Royal Challengers Bangalore, who finished outside of the playoffs. Cronulla’s prospects for the 2019 NRL season have taken a massive hit, with the confirmation yesterday that coach Shane Flanagan has been deregistered by the governing body. It means that the Sharks are without a head coach just a few months out from the start of the season, and will throw their plans into disarray. The NRL confirmed Flanagan’s sanction yesterday, after an investigation into his dealings with the club during the 2014 season, when he was suspended due to his role in the peptides scandal. One of the conditions of that suspension was that he would have no contact with the club, but an investigation found that numerous emails had been exhanged between Flanagan and club officials, including commu-
nication about recruitment of potential players. Cronulla have also been fined $NZ838,900 for their role in the breach. The NRL emphasised the findings are preliminary and no final determination will be made until the response that Flanaghan provides has been properly considered, but also confirmed he will not be permitted to coach pending final determination. - NZME
Savea signs on All Blacks flanker Ardia Savea has resisted approaches from French club rugby and added two years to his contract with New Zealand Rugby. The 25-year-old confirmed he had signed until 2021, reportedly backing out of a deal to play for Pau after next year’s World Cup in what he described as a “tough decision” on social media. Savea was one of the bestperformed All Blacks in 2018, having to start all the key Tests at the end of the season after first-choice openside Sam Cane suffered a season-ending neck injury. It had been speculated that Savea would join a number of topflight All Blacks who have signed French contracts over the last two years. That includes his older brother, winger Julian. - NZME

Awapuni a stepping stone to Gr.1 Group One performer Xpression will contest the Hyslop Plumbing 3YO Premier (1400m) at Awapuni on Saturday ahead of a tilt at Group One glory next month. The Guy Lowry and Grant Cullen-trained filly ran third last-start in the Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton and while disappointed with that run, her connections are looking for redemption in the Gr.1 Levin Classic (1600m) at Trentham on January 12. “Her run in the 1000 Guineas was disappointing,” Lowry said. “It was okay, she learnt a lot, but you always like to win. “She’s been good (since then), she’s had a ten-day break in the paddock. She had a gallop on Tuesday and seems to be in the right fitness to go towards Saturday with the intention of running in the Levin Classic.” Xpression will once again team up with premiership-winning jockey Samantha Collett on Saturday and will jump from the ace barrier in the six horse field. “I’m happy with her going into Saturday with the thought that it will further her fitness for January 12,” Lowry said. “She isn’t screwed down at the moment, it’s really just a lead-in race for the Group One.”
Lowry said he thinks the Levin Classic is his filly’s best chance of the season to add a Group One scalp to her record as he doesn’t believe she is suited over more ground. “I don’t believe she is a stayer

and it’s the last crack at her own age group at Group One company at a mile or below in this country,” he said. “I’d like to think she was a Group One winner by the end of the season and I see the Levin Classic as

Calder making himself at home Eight months since moving back to New Zealand from Macau jockey Andrew Calder has quickly re-established himself as a strong addition to the Kiwi riding ranks. Calder, who spent seven years riding in Macau, has won 15 races since his return in May, including one at Group Two level. “I’m staying with my father-inlaw, Richard Collett, so I’ve been riding work for him and showing up to every trial and race meeting in the northern area and slowly building up contacts,” Calder said. “I was gone for quite a long time, so you do lose your support, but most of the trainers have been quite receptive. “When I came back in winter it was a little bit slow. I was just getting one or two rides a meeting, but since the tracks have firmed-up I’m getting a lot more support. “The apprentices aren’t getting as many rides and trainers are using senior jockeys more.” Calder said that being able to ride as light as 54kgs has provided a number of opportunities to gain rides. “The other riders have been great too,” Calder said. “There’s good comradery between us all and they’re a great bunch, so I’ve fitted right back in with them.” While Calder is enjoying the Kiwi lifestyle and home cooked meals, he does miss some aspects of life in Macau. “The travel in New Zealand is a big thing that I’ve had to get used

to again,” he said. “I used to love having the one track in Macau which was walking distance from where we lived, and all our race-day gear just stayed on course. “I went to Macau for a change of scenery at the time and I enjoyed getting a bit of overseas experience to boost my expertise. “I went over there for three months and ended up shifting over there. My wife Natasha and I never expected to stay as long as we did but we really enjoyed the lifestyle and financially it was quite lucrative for us.” Calder said that although racing in Macau has been in decline, there were a number of advantages to working in the former Portuguese territory. “There are more overheads as a jockey in New Zealand, with tax, ACC and travelling expenses it does add up,” Calder said. “Tax in Macau is only five percent. That’s quite a big difference to 33 per cent in New Zealand.” Calder has no plans to head overseas again as he is enjoying setting-up a life for his family in Pukekohe with Natasha and eighteen-month-old twin boys Tye and Jax. “I’m really settled here now and I’m going to make a conscious effort to improve and get into a better spot on the premiership,” he said. “I will just work on getting winners and making contacts.” Calder continues his association with the Nigel Tiley-trained Bisou Bisou this Saturday in the

Cooksley outed Veteran rider Grant Cooksley will take no part in the busy Christmas-New Year racing period after being suspended for 16 race days following an incident at Ruakaka back on November 16 which resulted in a fall. Cooksley admitted a charge of careless riding in that he permitted his mount So Glorious to shift inwards early in the home straight when insufficiently clear of Shafiq Rusof’s mount Boundtobehonored which clipped heels and fell, with Tantalising, ridden by Danielle Johnson being brought down as a result. While both horses escaped injury, Johnson, who was third on the national jockeys’ premiership at the time, suffered multiple fractures to her collarbone, while Rusof suffered fractured ribs.

Two young Mid Canterbury cricketers have been named in the Canterbury Under-17 team following a successful showing at last week’s regional under-17 tournament. Mid Canterbury’s Archie Redfern and Harry McMillan have both made the team that will play in a regional tournament in Lincoln from January 17-24. The inclusion of the two young Mid Cantabrians in the Canterbury side came off the back of a pretty good tournament for Mid Canterbury, where they bounced back well from losses in two Twen-
ty20 matches which got the week under way. After those Twenty20 losses to Canterbury Country and Christchurch Metro Red, Mid Canterbury made a strong start to the 50-over aside games, beating Buller by an impressive 148 runs and then beating South Canterbury by 99 runs. In their final game of the tournament they took on an impressive Christchurch Metro Red side and lost by seven wickets, but it proved to be a tight tournament, with the two Christchurch Metro sides, Canterbury Country and Mid Canterbury each picking up
two wins from their three matches. Mid Canterbury lost the toss in that last game and were sent into bat and were on the back foot early, losing two quick wickets to find themselves 3/2. Redfern and Thom Graham helped get the side back on track with a 54-run partnership, but the innings folded pretty quickly after Redfern was dismissed for 15 and Graham for 31. Mid Canterbury were all out for 64 of 27 overs. Mid Canterbury headed out into the field with the intention of making life difficult for Christchurch Metro Red, and a wicket to McMil-
lan on the first ball started his side off on the right foot. Tight bowling by all bowlers made scoring difficult for the Christchurch players, but eventually they reached the tally for the loss of just three wickets after 26 overs. When the tournament finished, the Canterbury Under-17 team was named, and Redfern and McMillan’s names were there, rewarding them for some top performances during the week. Redfern scored more runs than any other batsman at the tournament, scoring 103 runs in his three innings, including a highest score

of 52, while McMillan was eighth in the bowling rankings from the tournament. His best figures for the tournament were an impressive 4/8 and he proved hard to play, with an economy rate of just 1.29. A Year 11 student this year, Redfern – from Methven – attended and played cricket for the Christchurch Boys’ High School first XI. McMillan was also in Year 11 this year and played for the Ashburton College first XV, although he is off to St Andrew’s College in Christchurch for his Year 12 and 13 on a cricket scholarship.
