Pipe band shut down for noise

The Ashburton County Scottish Society Pipe Band is hoping that some noise complaints made to the council by individuals near their Creek Road home won’t have a negative impact on the good numbers in the group.

One week after receiving an excessive noise discretion when they shifted from the heat of their hall across to the Ashburton College grounds to practice, the group was again paid a visit following more complaints on Monday night.

“It’s a bit bloody frustrating,” pipe

major, Peter Doak said.

“We were back inside by 8.30pm and only outside for about half an hour, but that wasn’t enough to stop us getting a visit and being issued with a verbal warning.”

In the past week, the band has made efforts to try and reach some form of agreement with the council over the issue, but so far, those requests for a meeting have been met without response.

The initial notice, served a week ago, stopped them from playing for up to 72 hours and the next step going forward,

according to the guidelines on the Ashburton District Council website, would see their gear confiscated or in extreme circumstances, made inoperable.

“We’ve got our backs up against the wall here and we’re not getting anywhere,” Doak said.

“The band was brought back last year and we’ve had great numbers, but the fear is now that we will lose members because of this situation.”

Christmas magic in Methven If you are after some Christmas sparkle, Frank Sandys’ Hobbs Road residence in Methven is the place to go.

The retired painter and granddad has been decorating his house with Christmas lights for the past 11 years.

This year he is planning his biggest and best display as it will be his last.

With about $5000 of new lights having been added this year to his collection, there are new additions including a Santa grotto and net lights over trees, as well as roof lights.

Generally hundreds of people from throughout Canterbury visit each year and he raises over $1000 in gold coin donations, which goes to a local charity.

This year’s charity will be Plains Fire Museum.

Christmas Eve is the biggest night, with Santa Claus himself popping in.

A mycoplasma bovis information evening is being held in Ashburton on Thursday.

Organised by Vetlife and open to anyone who is interested, the event, at Ashburton Collegiate Rugby Club on Smithfield Road at 6.30pm, promises a range of speakers.

Vetlife Ashburton vet Kaitlyn Lutz said the aim was to educate people about the biosecurity measures they can put in place to deal with the cattle disease.

It will cover best practice biosecurity, fencing, testing procedures and the NAIT (National Identification Animal and Tracing) scheme.

Its focus was to ensure the correct information about the disease was in the public arena, she said, which would help dispel some of the myths around it.

Although M. bovis is yet to be confirmed in Mid Canterbury, MPI strongly suspects it is on a farm near Ashburton.

Results of tests on stock from that property are due by Friday.

Feedmill decision still weeks away

It may be six to eight weeks before the future of SealesWinslow’s Mid Canterbury feedmill is known.

Although the block plant at the mill was undamaged by the large blaze that struck earlier this month and is now back in operation, chief operating officer Chris Brown said it was too early for

Lit-up church would ‘enhance Ashburton’

Holy Name Church priest Father Geoff Gray is looking forward to seeing the church lit up at night.

Lighting up the Holy Name Church with one or two floodlights year-round would enhance the beauty of Ashburton at night, says the church’s parish priest.

Father Geoff Gray said the building’s high square tower with a brick and decorative exterior, based on the famous churches of Lombardi in Italy, made it a distinctive building. “It’s a beautiful church, quite often people stop in the daytime and take photos,” he said.

Father Gray wrote to the Ashburton District Council in September asking it to consider contributing to such a lighting project, with the idea of it being a collaborative venture between the church, the council and EA Networks.

Councillors finally discussed the

request at a meeting this month, as part of considerations for its festive lighting budget, but declined amidst concern it would set a precedent for other churches to follow. However, there were other avenues suggested, such as through the council’s community grants in the New Year. Father Gray said he had yet to officially hear back from the council, but the initial funding refusal had not dampened enthusiasm.

Recently an electrician, who was a parishioner, tried out a floodlight and found it worked well.

He believed one or two floodlights would be adequate.

The Holy Name church was built in 1930, with the parish priest at the time, Dean O’Donnell, responsible for its development.

About $100,000 was spent on strengthening the roof prior to the Canterbury earthquakes, and the church is the only Category One Historic Places Trust building in Ashburton.

Youth banned from crossing river An Ashburton judge has banned a 16-year-old youth from crossing the Ashburton River and he must remain in Tinwald for the next month and keep out of trouble.

Judge Bernadette Farnan said the youth had not complied with some conditions of supervision that followed an early release from the youth justice facility Te Puna Wai. Police this week asked for a twomonth ban from Ashburton town but the judge imposed a month, hoping it would act as an incentive to comply.

youths and police were concerned.

There had also been reports of vandalism and anti-social behaviour.

Judge Farnan told the youth he must stay on the south side of the river and could only come to Ashburton in the company of his father or if he had an official appointment. The ban would be reviewed on January 29.

She also said the youth’s progress on supervision would be monitored by the court, with Judge Joanna Maze receiving regular reports.

“You will be 17 in a few months and you don’t want to be in the adult court,” she told the youth.

Christmas light display just grew and grew

Two thousand visitors trekking through the lounge and six weeks slogging in the garden isn’t everyone’s idea of a merry December.

But for David Van Tongeren and his family, the looks on people’s faces as they approach his Ashburton home – now illuminated by hundreds of thousands of lights – is absolutely worth it.

The Alford Forest Road property has rapidly become one of the most popular Christmas light displays in town, complete with operational trains, a lifesized waving Santa figurine, a paddock of reindeer, and a blowup Santa on a see-saw, altogether adorning the front garden, back garden, trees, garage and even two rooms inside.

“It all started with the tree out the front,” Van Tongeren said.

“We put a few lights on it and thought – well that looks alright – and then it just grew.”

Now two and a half times bigger than ever before, it features a whopping total of over 200,000 LEDs. “It’s a little more than that, but after we got to 200,000 we gave up counting,” said David.

It began with a few lights in a tree, and now David Van Tongeren’s house is one of Ashburton’s most impressive local Christmas light spectacles.

And as for the incentive behind the hard work, the house has a donation box which he passes on to a different charity

New option for council payments The Ashburton District Council has introduced a new payment option for people who wish to pay their rates or bill such as building application, animal charges and infringement fees online.

Neither a credit or debit card is required for Account2Account, an online service which allows people to make secure payments directly from their bank account on the council website in real time.

was an easy and straightforward way to pay for a range of council services.

“Simply head to the council website at ashburtondc.govt.nz and click on the activity you wish to carry out, such as re-registering your dog or paying a rates bill, follow the prompts and you’ll be able to select Account2Account as a payment option. All you need is your bank account details.”

Account2Account is supported by ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Kiwibank, TSB and Westpac banks.

The Ashburton District Council lists unreasonable noise as being loud noise that comes from commercial or industrial activity that may be considered unreasonable based on a number of set rules.

However, they also mention that 10pm is an appropriate time to cease any noise that some may find offensive.

The average solo set of pipes will register somewhere between 95 and 110 decibels, while, for comparison, a chainsaw will register 100 decibels.

Ashburton District’s council environmental monitoring manager, Rick Catchpowle, could not be reached for comment yesterday afternoon.

In brief District loses identities Ashburton lost two remarkable women this week with the passing of Dame Elizabeth Harper and Rita Turtill. Harper, 80, dedicated her life to helping children and Turtill was amongst the country’s oldest citizens at 107 years and 45 days.

Both women died on Monday.

Harper’s funeral will be on Friday.

She was a lifetime supporter of Save the Children and was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1995 after four years as national president. A memorial service for Turtill will be held on January 10.

The Cameron Courts resthome resident turned 107 in style on November 3 with her opera singer daughter Judy Glen on hand to sing her favourite song. Turtill was born in Christchurch but moved to Ashburton with her family when her father Frank Smallbone opened a garage on Cass Street.

She had a career as a seamstress and settled in Christchurch, but moved back to Ashburton in 1990.

Police shoot man A man who was shot by police after he allegedly threatened a woman with a gun underwent surgery last evening. The man was shot at Vinegar Hill campground in Rangitikei after police were called to a family harm incident at 9.25am yesterday, Central District Acting District Commander Inspector Keith Borrell said. Police yesterday confirmed the 22-year-old man remained in custody in hospital and would be undergoing surgery on an injury to his arm.

Radio exhibition a big hit with Ashburtonians

A creative 100 years of radio in New Zealand retrospective is hitting all the right notes at Ashburton Museum.

The touring Radio New Zealand Sounds Like Us exhibition has settled into the museum for the duration of summer, showcasing imaginatively shaped interpretations of an invention that has, in turn, shaped our society.

And it appears the creativity is infectious – at least for Ashburtonians – with dozens of visitors leaping at the chance to create their own Sounds Like Us radio.

Museum Director Tanya Robinson said since the exhibition opened on December 8, visitors have “gone crazy” creating their own models.

“There have been so many entries already we’ve filled the shelves, and we’re thinking we might need to build new shelves,” she said.

“Some people have even spent around three hours here working on their radios.”

Visitors have also pored over the Weta Workshop produced radio designs on display, which range from a number 8 wire radio to a beehive radio, a gumboot radio and even a bush radio.

“The thing I really like about this exhibition is it makes you look really, really closely,” said Robinson.

“They’re all icons of New Zealand but when you look close you can see the radio features.”

Sounds Like Us also invites visitors to vote for their favourite model, browse 100 audio clips from across the ages, check out a timeline of radio in New Zealand and add events from their own timeline.

The exhibition is open from 10am to 4pm daily at the museum.

Ashburton Museum invited visitors to create their own radio, and less than two weeks into the exhibition, Museum Assistant Connor Lysaght and Museum Director Tanya Robinson have already welcomed swarms of entries.

Marae receives its own defibrillator

Hakatere Marae is the first South Island recipient of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), as part of a national St John initiative.

In a bid to reduce the disproportionate number of cardiac arrest fatalities associated with Maori, St John are installing AED devices to 50 maraes around the country, including 10 across the South Island.

Hakatere Marae received their

AED earlier this week, along with a 3 Steps for Life first aid programme that teaches participants how to place a 111 call, perform CPR and use their AED. Hakatere Marae was selected as one of the first recipients for the South Island because of its location seven kilometres north of Ashburton, and relative isolation from other medical resources.

“We looked at guidelines including whether the marae is near other maraes, and where the next AED is,” said St John Maori

Liaison Officer Michelle Brett.

The cost of an AED ranges from $1500 to $2000, but through funding from a variety of sources, Brett said the project had been able to launch about two and a half years ago.

“We’ve just gifted a number of AEDs up on the East Coast of the North Island, and now we’re looking at the South Island,” she said.

“And the response from other maraes around the country has been really positive.”

chance of survival falls by 10 to 15 per cent,” he said.

“The more people who know how to do CPR and have access to an AED in the community, the greater the patient’s chance of survival is.”

Hakatere Marae will also be listed on the New Zealand AED Locations website, www.aedlocations.co.nz, which indicates the location of AEDs around the country.

There are currently about 76 AEDs around Mid Canterbury.

Man disqualified until 2020 A 34-year-old Ashburton man has been disqualified from driving until almost 2020 after admitting drink driving and driving while disqualified.

Jason Henry Forsyth appeared this week before Ashburton District Court Judge Bernadette Farnan, who sentenced him to community detention for four months, 100 hours community work and forbid him from driving for 14 months from August, 2018.

Forsyth had five previous convictions for disqualified driving and one for dangerous driving.

Police prosecutor Ian Howard said Forsyth had been driving on Havelock Street in the early hours of October 28 when he was breath-tested by police. He blew 797mcg.

Judge Farnan said Forsyth did not seem to be learning by his previous mistakes and the sentence needed to deter him.

Raymond Donal Todd, 40, pleaded not guilty to charges of supplying methamphetamine and allowing premises to be used

for smoking methamphetamine, a class A controlled drug.

He has elected trial by jury and the case will be discussed by the court next on March 13.

Todd is in custody but indicated through his lawyer he would apply for bail.

Ryan Leonard Bell, 21, a fencer of Tinwald, was fined $1100 after being caught driving with 1075mcg on Dobson Street on December 16.

He was also ordered to pay $120 court costs and disqualified from driving for eight months.

Judge Bernadette Farnan said the reading was high, but Bell had assured probation officers it was a one-off. He had been drinking at his end-of-year work function.

Andrea Frances Clay was sentenced to six months supervision and disqualified from driving for eight months on charges of drink driving and careless use.

Clay blew 1102mcg when police were called after she crashed into a parked car on Thomson

Street on September 22.

Judge Farnan noted she had been paying money to an insurance company for a claim arising from the crash.

Christopher Aaron Robinson had a 14-month prison sentence converted to a six-month term of home detention.

Robinson, 44, had been jailed last month on charges of refusing to give blood, assault with a weapon, intentional damage and driving while disqualified.

He would have been sentenced to home detention had an address been available at the time.

Judge Farnan said it had been Robinson’s ninth drink-driving related offence but in the spirit of Christmas she converted the jail term to six months’ home detention.

The sentence will be served at a family member’s house, where “plenty of jobs” were awaiting him.

Steven Thomas Hislop, 30, of Rakaia, was fined $550 after be-

ing caught driving with 523mcg on King Street, Chertsey, on November 18.

He was also ordered to pay court costs of $130 and disqualified from driving for eight months.

Hislop said he had been driving to avoid a domestic situation.

The judge told him there were better ways to avoid situations like that.

A man who consumed an energy drink then took medication turned angry when his partner suggested it was unwise.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the woman, had been preparing for a day at work. He pushed the woman’s head against the wall and put his hands around her throat; she thought she would pass out.

The man was sentenced to nine months’ intensive supervision, 80 hours’ community work and ordered to make an emotional harm payment of $400.

He was also ordered to undertake counselling for alcohol,

drugs and gambling if directed by probation officers.

Jerome Te Ruihi Keefe, 35, admitted stealing a leg of lamb worth $42 from Four Square at Allenton.

Police prosecutor Ian Howard said Keefe went into the supermarket on October 22 and put the leg of lamb in his backpack.

He paid for a pie and left the shop.

Counsel Marilyn Gilchrist said he had been hungry and jobless at the time but he was now working in a shearing gang.

Keefe was sentenced to 80 hours’ community work and the theft added to a nine-page list of previous convictions.

A man who took a hammer to a table, fridge and benchtop after an argument with his partner admitted three charges of intentional damage.

Nico Michael Smith was angry at the time. He was remanded to February 19 for sentence; reparation might be sorted through restorative justice.

Curfew varied to enable night work A Mid Canterbury man charged with indecent assault and sexual connection with a young person has had his 24-hour curfew varied to allow him to work several hours at night.

The man, who has name suppression, must be within sight of two people named on court documents while he works; he is otherwise under curfew at home.

The man’s ability to stand trial will be the subject of a separate hearing in the Ashburton court on February 5.

East Street in July. The sickness beneficiary had been disqualified from driving indefinitely in 2014 for drink driving.

Judge Farnan said Keen had a long history of drink driving, but had no previous history for driving while disqualified.

Keen had made a sudden decision to drive to Oamaru to see family and was stopped in Ashburton on his way down.

He was convicted and disqualified for six months.

Dorothy Kiria went to a party in Christchurch on August 11, but was still over the limit when she drove home to Ashburton the next morning.

Kiria admitted driving with excess breath alcohol (463mcg) and driving without a licence when she was stopped at Rolleston on August 12.

She was fined $470, disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to pay court costs.

A man who stole a tip jar from an Orari café admitted theft and two charges of intentional damage.

Garry John Webb, 51, took the tip jar while staff were distracted, then went to the café carpark and tried to break into two cars using a rock. His actions were caught on security camera.

He told police he was drunk and upset at the time.

The tip jar contained about $27, while the vehicle damage came to $827.

He was remanded to March 5 for sentence.

Christchurch man Max Roger Keen, 60, admitted driving while disqualified on

Ross’ lawyer, Scott Mills, said a guilty plea had been intimated with diversion offered and accepted. Judge Munro remanded him on bail to reappear in the registrar’s court on February 7.

Phillips, Apirana and Ututaonga pleaded not guilty to the human remains charge and were bailed to reappear for a case review hearing in the district court on February 28.

Apirana pleaded not guilty to a driving charge which his lawyer, Tim Braithwaite, said was part and parcel of the human remains charge.

Two men who’d been held in custody after earlier appearances, Sebastein Winera, 22 and Ryan Rawiri Lingman, 25, appeared in the district court.

Both pleaded not guilty to interfering with Mr Lines’ remains and were also remanded for case reviews on February 28.

Winera was bailed but Judge Munro remanded Lingman back into custody after police opposed bail.

Ex Glee star pleads guilty to child pornography charges Former Glee star Mark Salling has pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography.

Salling entered the plea in a downtown Los Angeles federal court yesterday and is scheduled to be sentenced on March 7.

Prosecutors and Salling have agreed to ask a judge to sentence the actor to between four to seven years in prison. He will also be required to register as a sex offender, pay restitution and abide by residency restrictions.

Eight people charged with improperly interfering with the remains of a man who drowned near Waihi Beach last month appeared in various Rotorua courts yesterday.

A 15-year-old and 16-year-old, who can’t be named for legal reasons, appeared in the youth court where they did not deny a charge of interfering with the remains of Jason Lines at Rotorua on December 2.

Judge Jocelyn Munro ordered both to take part in family group conferences.

She directed one to appear in the Rangitahi Court (which sits on a marae) on February 7.

The other is to reappear in the youth court on February 12. His lawyer, Harry Edward, said a restorative justice meeting was proposed.

Both were released on bail.

Four adults who’d previously appeared in the district court also appeared in the youth court jurisdiction.

Tips to shop smart this Christmas As you ponder just what gifts to get friends and family members in the lead-up to Christmas, there are some common-sense precautions to keep in mind. Consumer New Zealand has the following 10 tips for shopping smart this silly season:

Top price doesn’t guarantee top performance. Paying top dollar doesn’t always mean the product is better than a cheaper one. Our tests routinely find cheap products that perform just as well as, if not better, than ones that cost much more.

Forget the extended warranty.

If you’re asked if you want an extended warranty with that new gadget, be aware that in most cases they’re not worth it. That’s because the Consumer Guarantees Act means retailers have to repair or replace faulty goods or refund your money.

Avoid dud gift cards. Too many gift cards have stingy expiry dates and end up becoming worthless before they can be used. If you’re giving a gift card, opt for one with no expiry date or that gives the recipient a decent amount of time to spend the money. Or give cash instead and avoid the expiry date hassle.

Don’t forget your chargeback rights. Bought something online from an overseas retailer and it never showed up? Or maybe it did but was nothing like the description?

If the retailer refuses to put things right, get on to your bank about a credit card or debit card chargeback. If your claim is accepted, you’ll get your money back.

Know who’s responsible for damaged goods. Under the Consumer Guarantees Act, retailers that arrange delivery have to ensure items arrive on time and in good condition. So if an item arrives damaged, you don’t have to muck about with the courier company – the shop must sort it out.

Find out where to shop for

good service. There are some shops where you’re just likely to have a better experience.

Our latest retailer satisfaction survey found it’s the little guys that do a better job at keeping their customers happy than the big chain stores.

■ It never hurts to ask. Leave your shyness at the door when you’re hunting for a deal and see what the salesperson is prepared to offer.

Ask if the item you’re after will be on sale soon or what the store is prepared to throw in to sweeten the deal.

■ Think carefully before signing up for a “buy now, pay later” deal. The

appeal at this time of year is understandable – you only ever have to shell out a fraction of the item’s cost upfront and pay off the rest over time.

However, if you start missing payments, you’ll pay default fees. Steep interest charges with some of these deals can also leave a sting.

Add in an exchange card.

While retailers have no obligation to take back a gift if the recipient doesn’t like it or you change your mind before giving it to them, some will do so in the interests of good customer relations.

Always ask the retailer for an exchange card to go with the gift.

Check the Boxing Day deal really is a deal. It can be easy to get caught up in the hype of Boxing Day sales. If you’re about to buy something, do a quick price check online to make sure another shop isn’t offering it for cheaper.

Price-comparison websites make this easier. If you make a spontaneous purchase then regret it, the retailer has no obligation to take the item back.

Hot stone massage growing in popularity

The worldwide trend of hot stone therapy is making an impact in Methven.

It has become a popular addition to treatments at Methven Sports Massage, which has seven massage therapists altogether.

The holistically-trained Mikyla Grant offers the therapy and says hot stones bring a special type of relaxation to her clients.

Grant is a mum of three young children who lives at Lyndhurst with partner Jared, and says she gets just as much relaxation from performing massage as those who are on the receiving end.

In traditional hot stone massage, smooth heated stones are

placed on the body. Grant said she has begun to combine the stones into her massage routine, using them as an extension of her hands.

“One stroke of the stone is equivalent to 10 deep tissue strokes. It’s relaxing and it just calms people,” she said.

The stones are a dense volcanic basalt and are heated in water.

Grant offers various types of massage such as deep tissue and relaxing, with the latter being her favourite.

“Because I love the way it just calms people and gives them awareness into themselves, and just a bit of a break in their day,” she said.

“It sounds airy-fairy, but there’s so many benefits, mental and physical.”

Noise complaint a PC world gone mad Matt Markham

here is something quite troubling about a local music group who have brought hours of entertainment to the people of this district during the year being issued with an excessive noise complaint while they practice and hone their craft.

Quite troubling in the fact that there are those out there who find it offensive in the first place and quite troubling for the fact that those who are charged with enforcing laws around such matters actually want to give the complaints credence.

In a PC world gone mad – the battles the Ashburton County Scottish Society Pipe Band are currently facing should come as no surprise, but it is, ultimately, surprising to discover that we have dipped so low as a society.

Of course, I speak about the minority as opposed to the majority here.

That a band can’t play music at 8.30 at night in summer without fear of prosecution is an embarrassment.

But the most concerning aspect of this all however, is where do we draw the line?

We can banish the pipe band back into the confinement of their building and those offended by the noise can rest easy but that will more than likely only turn the attention to something else.

Is the next cab off the rank the clocktower chiming every 15 minutes, or the fire alarm going off in the middle of the night?

At some point there needs to be a stand made.

Someone needs to lead the way and say enough is enough.

Our world has become so uncomfortably PC these days that many of the wonderful things we all used to enjoy are now deemed dangerous or offensive.

Surely, we aren’t too far gone that we can’t claim back some of what we used to have.

That carefree nature of people who are more than willing to sit at home on Monday night in the summer and listen to the local pipe band play their music and not feel the urge to phone in a complaint about the level of noise being made.

That’s not too much to ask for this Christmas, is it?

Cathie As the daughter, sister, sisterin-law and aunt of previous and current pipe band members i know not everyone loves the pipes as I do. But the pipe band hall has been there as long as I can remember. I wonder how long the complainer has lived there. Did they know the band practises there? Or perhaps they bought when the band was in recess.

Alli Next target will be the band that drives the street playing xmas carols.

Leave our pipeband alone. Common sense needs to prevail. Bigger issues in our community which council and its contractors turns a blind eye to.

Hayley I think it is terrible that the pipeband are getting threatened to have their equipment taken because someone obviously doesn’t have any community spirit. They surely knew where they were moving to. The band has played there for years and I’ve never heard of a complaint about them practicing.

Pauline My mother chose to move right next door to the pipe band hall - for her it was a major attraction. The “pipes” for our family are “part of our heritage” Kym This is a massive over reaction. I lived across the road from the pipe band hall for years and years and not once did I complain my kids loved it. Parties make more of a racket than they do - come on people !!! Leave them alone Carla Well if the average joe/jane has noise control called on them then why should the pipe band be excluded. Pipe bands are wayyyy louder than the average stereo and voices.

es, that’s right; the eagerly expected and keenly anticipated “bump” (boost) in the polls for the new Government and its three, rickety, component parts, the moment it (they) took office, just has not eventuated.

In fact, it is, The Honeymoon that never Happened. Psephologists and palmists everywhere are puzzled and perplexed.

Conventional wisdom almost demands such a bump. When Helen took the reins in 2005 and Sir John the tiller in 2008, their respective party popularity rocketed skywards by a healthy 10 per cent almost overnight.

This time, however, despite being led by “the girl with the laughing eyes”, (and pearly teeth) Labour, and its shaky props, are not generating quite the nationwide adulation that, at first, seemed inevitable. Why, the National Party has even increased its share of the vote by one point two per cent since the die was cast!

Jacinda is, at least, the favoured Prime Minister but there is not yet much sign of “Big Bill” going south, anytime soon”.

Which would seem, strongly, to suggest that the nonsense talked on radio and in television interviews in the immediate aftermath of the vote, when the besotted – by their own wishfulthinking certainty – “celebrity” interviewees spoke glibly and excitedly about the election “showing a strong call for change” – were actually speaking through the seats of their collective pants.

People did not want change then anymore than they do now.

Talk is always cheap but doesn’t necessarily justify the accompanying hype.

Thus, there is a kind of political impasse in the air, where the substantial, one-party Opposition, faces a collection of mini parties which, in the light of day outside the Beehive, have little time either for each other’s policies or even each other.

The Greens, in particular, seem out of their political depth with little or no experience on which to fall back, yet anxious to save the world before Christmas.

In particular, “lone leader by chance”, James Shaw, seems not to know which way to turn as he tangles with parliamentary procedures well outside his comfort zone. He could certainly do with a female co-leader – a basic fea-

James Shaw seems not to know well outside his comfort zone. ture of Green Party culture; one of each gender at the helm – but so far seems not to realise such a person should be on his radar and his screen. (and permanently at his right hand).

True, most of his very few colleagues are behaving more like headless chooks (free-range, of course) than full-grown members of Parliament but there are two who have retained their heads and would be very helpful to James (Shaw) as he tries to hang onto his.

Those two would seem to me to be – with their heads firmly screwed on – Julie-Anne Genter and Eugenie Sage. The former, in particular, appears to be in full control of both her brief and herself while the latter, Eugenie, with a surname like “Sage”, couldn’t ‘t be anything but wise, which is why she looks very much like an owl and was, therefore, a shoo-in for the role of Minister for the Environment Of the two, it strikes me Ms Genter has more pizazz and personality then Eugenie – safe pair of hands though she may be – so would opt for Julie-Anne to be the one to pull James out of the tail-spin in which, currently, he appears to find himself, get his feet firmly back on the ground and ensure he represents the Greens with calm, climatecentred, common sense.

He and “his girls” do not want to be seen as the weak link in the coalition chain. Its load-bearing potential is hardly substantial as it is. It would not take a seismic event to see the fragile band give way at a series of pivotal points.

Meanwhile, on the slightly larger canvas, the spending spree continues, with increases in welfare to all sorts and conditions

which way to turn as he tangles with parliamentary procedures of men, women, children and infants, without any obviously visible means of paying for them.

It’s a broad-based bonanza of eye-watering proportions. The new “students” are guffawing all the way to the bank, though some of the charities visibly fighting child poverty seem likely to lose their much-needed government grants on April 1 next year.

However, Thursday’s latest offering from Jacinda suggests she will be shouldering that particular burden herself, with help from some of her more robust coalitioners in Parliament.

From my mole, deeply embedded in the gut of the body politic, comes news of “winter payments” to middle-of-thefinancial-road New Zealanders as well as paternity allowances and hand-outs of every hue.

Such a stampede of vote-catching velocity can be attributed to the new holy grail of the The First Hundred Days, a title which, nowadays, generates its own almost uncontrollable momentum.

If you haven’t done it in the first hundred days, you never will.

But is coming good on campaign promises in such frenzied fashion a sound basis for good government?

What will happen when the “fossil fuel” of election energy begins to run out and the gallop becomes merely a laboured trot?

As with so many other facets of life, isn’t pacing oneself still a desirable way to go. All rush and little thought for the longer-term consequences is becoming the latest pattern of government.

If there are enough wise heads in the fragile coalition to slow the rush they should show themselves now, before their Gadarene colleagues lead them all over

the cliff edge, there to dash their heads upon the rocks below! Not a great prospect.

Meanwhile, my better-educated and wealthier mole, shrewdly planted in the basements of the homes of the rich and famous and of those who would-be, in “locations, locations, locations” like Fendalton, Karori and Remuera, reports the evil coalitioners will, on April 1 (Fools’ Day) next year remove from their pockets and the wallets of the slightly less well housed, a total of $1060.

Such a move is to be fought over in the Beehive in a final friendly flurry of bile and bitterness before the House breaks for its Christmas hols and suddenly, it’s Goodwill to all People. (Once upon a time it was men only who were so blessed.) Remember?

Shocking!

I, though, am keen to wish the wise readers of the Ashburton Guardian all the vey best for Christmas and then for 2018 beyond.

May Trump become a rarelymentioned anachronism and Brexit be banished to the back pages. And if Mr Putin were to crash his jet-ski-driven, helicopter back-pack into the frozen wastes of a Siberian lake while, yet again, trying to prove he is a clone of 007, but by a factor of ten, I shall not be among the volunteers sent to find him. So there!

Streep responds to attack

Meryl Streep has staunchly denied any knowledge of Harvey Weinstein’s wrongdoing and urged Rose McGowan to reach out to her, following an extraordinary attack by the actor over the weekend. Following reports that Streep and other high-profile actors would be wearing black to the Golden Globes in a “silent protest” against sexism in Hollywood, McGowan launched a scathing attack. “Actors, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @ goldenglobes in a silent protest. Six dead after train derails An Amtrak derailment that killed at least six people, could have been caused by an object on the railway.

The New York Post reports the accident, which left at least one carriage dangling onto the highway below, might have resulted from a stray piece of machinery left on the tracks.

The report carried with it a picture of what could be an axle from another train.

Authorities are yet to pinpoint a cause for the crash, however the Associated Press reported track maintenance problems were unlikely to be an issue. Speed has not been

ruled out as a factor.

The deaths “are all contained to the train”, said Ed Troyer, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

“It’s pretty horrific.”

Troyer said 13 of 14 carriages were derailed in the crash.

“A couple of cars are not safe enough to search,” he said.

“We know that there’s nobody alive in them at this point, but there are some other [fatalities] that we are probably going to find. We just don’t know until they can shore up those train cars and get in there and search them.”

About 77 people were tak-

en to hospitals in Pierce and Thurston counties, officials said. Four suffered serious injuries, according to Cary Evans, spokesman for CHI Franciscan Health.

One passenger told CNN: “We were catapulted into the seats in front of us.”

CNN released audio of the frantic emergency radio transmissions between the train conductor and the dispatcher.

“Emergency, emergency, we are on the ground!” the frantic Amtrak employee can be heard yelling.

“We are on the freeway. We need EMS ASAP.

The derailment happened on the first day that Amtrak trains began using a new track between the cities of Tacoma and Olympia in Washington state, according to a news release from the state’s transportation department.

The train was making an inaugural run for higher speed service, and local officials had reportedly warned of dangers.

Seventy-eight passengers and five crew members were aboard when the train derailed about 64km south of Seattle just before 8am (local time) Amtrak said.

Keen to play Gandalf again Sir Ian McKellen wants to play Gandalf again in the Lord of the Rings Amazon TV series. The 78-year-old actor portrayed the wizard in Sir Peter Jackson’s award winning trilogy and then reprised his role in The Hobbit movies but now Amazon are set to adapt the J. R. R. Tolkien’s novel series into a multi-season television show.

McKellen hasn’t ruled out returning as he said he isn’t too old to reprise his iconic role. Speaking to Graham Norton, he said: “What do you mean, another Gandalf?

Father of dead son: ‘Abusers can rot in hell’ The father of 4-year-old Tyrell Cobb, who died as a result of a blow to his stomach, says his son’s mother and her partner should “rot in hell” after being sentenced for his manslaughter.

Heidi Strzbak, 34, was jailed for nine years on Monday for violently lashing out at her son while deprived of cannabis on the Gold Coast in May 2009, according to evidence presented in Brisbane Supreme Court.

Strzbak’s then-partner Matthew Scown also pleaded guilty to Tyrell’s manslaughter, but walked free from court having already spent two years and eight months behind bars.

Speaking to A Current Affair on Monday night, Tyrell’s father Jason Cobb slammed the former couple as “disgusting

Cobb was particularly hurt by footage of Scown smiling and laughing as he walked out of the court in October having been handed a suspended sentence.

“That’s like a slap in the face, basically,” he said.

Justice Peter Applegarth found Strzbak likely punched Tyrell in the stomach in frustration then chose not to seek medical help to avoid a child protection investigation.

Despite her guilty plea, Strzbak maintained in court that she did not hurt her son.

“I have not caused the injuries that I am being blamed for and I believe that it is a mistake, an injustice,” she said.

Scown pleaded guilty to manslaughter in September on the basis of failing to take Tyrell to the doctor, but said he was not responsible for the fatal blows to the boy’s stomach.

The judge agreed.

For Cobb, these details are inconsequential.

“They can argue he said, she said; it doesn’t matter. They were both there, they’re both responsible,” he told ACA. Strzbak sobbed and shook her head in the dock as evidence was read out in court on Monday, but Cobb said he had no sympathy for her after hearing the “pretty devastating” facts.

“If she gets what she deserves, I’ll be happy. She can go to jail and I’ll be happy,” he said.

“Not happy, but happy for Tyrell.”

A teaser trailer for Mortal Engines, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi film shot in New Zealand and starring Irish actor Robert Sheehan and Iceland’s Hera Hilmar, landed yesterday. From Universal Pictures, Mortal Engines is set in a world thousands of years after civilisation was destroyed where gigantic moving cities roam the earth. Jackson is co-producing the film, which is based on Philip Reeves’ Mortal Engines book. Fans were quick to sing its praises, with one writing: “Looks awesome.”

Uber driver admits murder The heartbroken family of a British diplomat who was raped and murdered by her Uber driver in Beirut say she was “irreplaceable” and they will “never recover”.

Rebecca Dykes, 30, was abducted after leaving a party in the Lebanese capital on Friday night.

Her body was found in a dumpster by the roadside, according to the Daily Mail.

An Uber driver, identified as Tarek Hesso, 35, was arrested in a 3am raid on Monday. He has previously served several prison sentences.

Dykes’ family said she was “simply irreplaceable and we will never fully recover from this loss”.

According to Lebanon’s NNA agency Hesso admitted picking up the diplomat in his Uber, attempting to rape her and then strangling her before ditching her body.

The body of the former public schoolgirl was found by a motorway on Saturday evening several kilometres from the nightspot where she was last seen alive.

Although investigators told MailOnline Hesso is 35, but a second senior security official in Lebanon said the suspect was aged 41 and had been arrested on drug-related charges

Cat ‘ripper’ fears

Rebecca Dykes, 30, has been found dead in the Lebanese capital Beirut. Local police sources say she was sexually assaulted, raped, and her body dumped by the side of a motorway. in 2015-17. A police official said the suspect was traced through security cameras that showed his car driving from Beirut to where Dykes’ body was found, just north of the Lebanese capital.

“He was detained at his apartment,” the official said, adding

that the suspect is a Lebanese citizen.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said the suspect is an Uber driver who picked up the woman from Beirut’s Gemmayze neighbourhood, known for its restaurants and pubs, then drove to a nearby neigh-

bourhood where she lived but did not drop her off.

Instead, the suspect drove to the site where Dykes’ body was later found.

The murder has shaken Lebanon, where such crimes, particularly against foreigners, are relatively uncommon.

Judge rules in favour of teens who want abortions A federal judge on Monday ordered President Donald Trump’s administration to allow two pregnant immigrant teenagers in US custody to obtain abortions.

US District Judge Tanya Chutkan said the Republican administration can’t prevent the 17-year-old girls from exercising their right to an abortion.

Both girls arrived in the country as unaccompanied minors and are being held in federal shelters, though it is not known

precisely where. The American Civil Liberties Union went to court on behalf of the two girls, as it did in the case of a third 17-year-old girl who was able to obtain an abortion in October following a high-profile court fight.

The current controversy stems from the Trump administration’s opposition to abortion and its decision to change the policy of the Obama administration concerning minors who are detained trying to enter the

country. Earlier this year, the office in the Health and Human Services Department that oversees the shelters prohibited them from taking steps to facilitate an abortion without its direct approval.

One teen is about 10 weeks pregnant, and the other is now about 22 weeks pregnant, Chutkan said.

She “is quickly approaching the limit for abortion in the state where she is being detained,” the ACLU argued in its lawsuit.

The judge is giving the administration 24 hours to try to persuade a higher court to block her order.

As it applies to the teenager who is 10 weeks pregnant, the administration appealed the judge’s ruling to both the federal appeals court in Washington and to the Supreme Court.

But it is not seeking to stop the teenager who is about 22 weeks pregnant from having an abortion.

Scotland Yard has now linked the grisly mutilation murders of more than 400 animals across Britain to a single perpetrator. Dubbed the Croydon Cat Ripper after the South London suburb where he began piling up corpses in 2015, the killer has not limited himself to cats. Officers from Operation Takahe now believe the same person – or group of people – is also responsible for the murders of scores of rabbits, foxes and swans countrywide.

Recreational cannabis excluded Companies involved in the recreational cannabis industry have been excluded from the $37 billion New Zealand Super Fund.

The exclusion does not include companies involved with licensed and authorised medicinal cannabis.

The fund says the move follows a growing global trend to decriminalise and legalise the recreational use of cannabis, which has led to sharemarket listings of companies involved in the industry overseas.

It says the decision is a precautionary one, as it does not currently hold any of the companies identified for exclusion.

Under the Guardians’ Responsible Investment Framework, decisions about the fund’s ethical exclusions take account of New Zealand law and international conventions to which New Zealand is a signatory.

Recreational use of cannabis is currently illegal in New Zealand and contrary to New Zealand’s commitments to international drug conventions.

The fund says companies will therefore be excluded if they are involved in the manufacturing

and cultivation of cannabis for recreational use.

They will also be excluded if their main business is to supply recreational cannabis to the public or to other companies, or provide support services for the recreational use of cannabis.

The fund also excludes companies involved in the manufacture of cluster munitions, nuclear explosive devices, anti-personnel mines and tobacco, and the processing of whale meat.

Final dairy auction likely to be mixed

By Tina Morrison The last GlobalDairyTrade auction of the year is expected to produce a mixed result, as the threat of drought in New Zealand pushes up prices for whole milk powder, while abundant supplies of skim milk powder in Europe depress prices for that product.

“Whole milk powder (WMP) has found support in recent weeks from the dry conditions NZ is currently experiencing,” said AgriHQ senior dairy analyst Susan Kilsby. “The extremely hot and dry summer thus far will reduce milk supplies this season and therefore WMP supplies are expected to tighten. Elsewhere in the world, milk supplies are on the rise and this is putting downward pressure on the price of

most other dairy commodities.”

December whole milk powder futures contracts on the NZX were trading ahead of the last GDT auction price, signalling traders expect the price to rise 2.8 per cent at last night’s auction, AgriHQ said. In contrast, the latest price of the December SMP futures contract indicates a 2.8 per cent fall at auction.

Futures prices also indicate mixed results are likely from milkfat products. Butter prices are expected to lift by as much as 5 per cent while anhydrous milkfat (AMF) prices are expected to weaken by about 1.5 per cent, AgriHQ said.

“This is the opposite to the recent trend in pricing seen in this market where AMF has gained more support than butter,” Kilsby said.

By Val leVeson Working smarter not harder is a phrase we hear a lot, it sounds good particularly with the busyness of many people’s lives – but how is it achieved? The key, say Frances and Max Harre of Forte Career and Business Designs, is in focusing on effectiveness.

This means doing the things that move you forward, being able to prioritise and asking yourself what’s at stake, what really matters?

Max and Frances Harre, who recently co-authored the book Work Passion Power: Strategies for a working life you will love, say there are many different ways of looking at this issue. “Often people think a tips and tricks approach will do it.

Well, it will – a little bit – but if you really want to address your stress and effectiveness you need to take a more systematic approach to extending your self-management skill set.”

Soft skills are vital for working effectively; they include people skills, critical thinking skills, self-management, creativity and more.

Max says the more traditional industrial mindset has been about how to work harder in a linear way.

“Working smarter is not so much about quantity as quality.

This isn’t about tricks and tips.”

If you really want to take on working smarter not harder, you have to take a systematic approach to your skill set and decide on what you’re wanting to achieve.

It takes sustained effort and a systemic approach to make sure you’re achieving.

Compare this to people who diet for a few days and then go back to old habits – it takes some degree of focus to be able to find

a way of doing things that can be sustained in the long term.

“Ask yourself constantly ‘am I on track, am I doing the right thing, am I doing the work that’s needed here to achieve the results required’.”

Max says a lot of people stay in busyness and feel like they’re achieving something, but all they’re actually doing is achieving being busy.

“It’s really about effectiveness – the term working smarter is about effectiveness. Busyness is not effectiveness. So it’s about what’s at stake and am I taking a broad enough approach to what’s important? How am I adding value to my company or clients? This is really important – it’s about finding the outcomes that matter most.”

People often end up running faster and faster, but in the wrong direction, they get frustrated and sometimes even neglect family and friends – people who are important to them.

“When you get clear that it’s really about your clients that you’re responsible to – how you treat them is really important. Clients include your employer, in fact that’s your number one client,” says Max. It’s good to look at the habits we get into and how we shake ourselves out of old ones. Do a little audit on what’s working and what’s not working. How would life be revolutionised through being more effective?

Frances says: “If you’re working effectively, you’ll feel highly energised. It’s very motivational.”

The Harres say the usual two drivers of smarter work are firstly being motivated by productivity improvement, which usually means better technology, using smarter tools such as bet-

ter spreadsheets or bookkeeping packages and secondly being motivated by wanting less stress – which usually means developing better self-management skills.

Here it’s good to look at habits, mindset, systems and support.

Max says: “What staggers me in our work is working smarter or more effectively can come down to a really important soft skill: relationship building. You’ve got a project to do and it feels hard and long, if you’re connected to people you can often cut the time it takes to do the project by a huge amount by being in communication, not isolation.

“In the past 10 years the software industry has revolutionised how it works.

“Agile methods have been developed and taken up in the broader world of knowledge working. These involve performance, flow and systems. These methods are effective, but require a certain mindset.

“Standard agile methods include things like cutting out multitasking, which is counterproductive, and reducing knowledge worker waste – for example making a spreadsheet look pretty may be a huge waste of time.”

An issue that’s topical at the moment is artificial intelligence taking over work.

“High level soft skills are what will be required,” says Max. “People need to know where they stand with the career they’ll be in once AI has bitten a big chunk out of it.

“We have to be more aware of the importance of creativity, caring, relationship building, innovation, sustained curiosity, desire for meaning – they’ll be the last things that will go, if they ever do go. They require real people.”

Get your festive nibble on ...

H

alf the enjoyment of having friends around for a drink is making an array of tasty nibbles to balance the alcohol component.

Not all nibbles need to be expensive or time consuming to make and it’s nice to occasionally offer something more than a few crisps or nuts. Try a few of these for pre-Christmas and new year snacking.

Blue cheese spread 100g blue vein cheese 3/4 C cream cheese 1/2 C crème fraîche 3T finely chopped parsley 2T minced red onion 1T finely chopped walnuts 1 clove garlic, crushed Squeeze of lemon juice, to taste Salt and pepper ■ Have all ingredients at room temperature.

■ Place in bowl or food processor or mash with fork.

■ Season well.

■ Shape into a log or put in bowl.

Chickpea and carrot dip 600g carrots, peeled and cut in chunks 1 tin chickpeas, rinsed and drained 1t minced garlic 2T olive oil 1T white wine vinegar 1t cumin 1t paprika Small red chilli, finely minced 1T lemon juice Fresh coriander, chopped ■ Cook carrots until tender. Drain and mash well.

■ Place the chickpeas, garlic, oil, vinegar, cumin, paprika, chilli, and lemon juice in a food processor.

■ Blitz until combined but not mushy.

■ Mix it in with the mashed carrots to form a slightly chunky dip.

■ Add coriander, season with salt and pepper.

Salmon dip 125g cream cheese Zest and juice of 1 lemon 2T chopped parsley Salt to taste Freshly ground pepper to taste 1 210g tin salmon 1T capers 1/4 C chopped dill Freshly ground pepper ■ Place cream cheese, lemon, parsley, salt and pepper into a food processor or hand whizz.

■ Add salmon, capers, dill and seasoning and blitz again.

Beetroot and feta dip 6 small beetroot, peeled and cooked (or tinned) 2T feta, mashed well 1T lemon juice Chopped mint 1/2 t cumin Salt and pepper 1 minced chilli 1T walnuts, finely chopped, for garnish

■ Combine all in a food processor and blitz until smooth.

■ If the texture is too thin, add a little more mashed feta.

■ Top with sprig of mint.

Zesty marinated olives 1T fennel seeds, toasted and coarsely ground 1T cumin seeds, toasted and coarsely ground 200g black olives 200g green olives Zest and juice of 1 orange 1/4 t smoked paprika Finely minced chilli 3T red wine vinegar 4T extra virgin olive oil 1T chopped mint 1T chopped parsley ■ In a large bowl combine the fennel, cumin, olives, zest, shallots and paprika.

■ Place the remaining ingredients into a jar with a tight lid and shake well.

■ Add to herbs.

■ Pour over the olives, cover and chill for at least 24 hours mixing them occasionally.

Thai meatballs 500g minced pork 250g minced chicken 1T Thai red curry paste 1T brown sugar 1/4 C finely chopped coriander 1/4 C finely chopped mint 1/2 small chilli, finely chopped 1C fresh breadcrumbs 1 egg, beaten 1/4 C sesame seeds Oil for frying Toothpicks ■ Place all the ingredients except the sesame seeds in a large mixing bowl and combine well.

■ Using wet hands, take generous teaspoonfuls of the mixture and roll into balls.

■ Toss lightly in the sesame seeds.

■ Heat 1cm oil in a saucepan and fry the meatballs in batches for 5-6 minutes

■ Turn regularly so they brown on all sides.

■ Drain on paper towel.

■ Serve with sweet chilli sauce with lemon juice and coriander.

Lamb and feta burgers with minty yoghurt 500g lamb mince 2t ground coriander 2t cumin seeds 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped Handful parsley, chopped 2 rosemary sprigs, leaves stripped and chopped Good splash Worcestershire sauce 1 egg, lightly beaten with a fork 100g feta cheese, cut into 16 cubes

1T sunflower oil Dip: 200ml natural yogurt Small bunch mint chopped

leaves,

■ Mix all dip ingredients, season and chill.

■ Combine all lamb ingredients, except feta and oil.

■ Shape into 16 burgers.

■ Push a cube of cheese into the centre of each and seal in. Chill.

■ Heat oven to 200°C degrees and heat the oil in a frying pan.

■ Fry the burgers for 1-2 mins until brown on each side.

■ Transfer to a baking tray and put in the oven for 5-10 minutes until cooked through and piping hot.

■ Pile on to a big plate and serve with the dip on the side.

3 ■ In a suitable sized bowl, mix the red capsicum, coriander, red onion, chilli and spring onions. Season as required and set aside.

■ Cook the prawns on a hot grill or in a hot pan with a splash of olive oil for 2–3 minutes turning once. Season.

■ Place the salad on to a serving platter with the prawns arranged on top. Garnish with the thin mango slices (if possible, curl some of the mango) and the curled cucumber slices.

■ To make the dressing: Mix together the lime juice and zest

with a splash of soy. Add the shared palm sugar, sushi vinegar and a good splash of the lemon infused olive oil. Taste and add more chilli and seasoning if required. Drizzle over the salad and garnish with lime wedges.

■ This recipe serves 4 people.

England skipper Joe Root faces up to the media to explain his team’s awful performance in the third Ashes test.

England sift through ashes England fans were left to rue another Ashes tour gone horribly wrong.

After the 5-0 whitewash suffered in 2013-14, all signs point towards another drubbing as the visitors have nothing but pride to play for.

Aussie icon, actor Russell Crowe, took great delight in poking fun at the tourists, prompting a salty response from English media personality and cricket tragic Piers Morgan.

Past players and supporters weighed in on what went wrong for England across the opening three tests of the summer.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan said he hopes all-rounder Ben Stokes is hurting more than the players who took the field at the WACA because he let them down when he became involved in a violent incident on a night out in Bristol in September.

Stokes was not included in the touring party because he was the subject of a police investigation, robbing England of its X-factor.

“I hope that Ben Stokes is watching and I hope he’s hurting more than the team in the dress-

ing room because as soon as Ben Stokes did what he did it was very clear to me he was going to struggle to be in Australia,” Vaughan told BT Sport.

“I said it straight away that I didn’t think England would have any chance of competing out here without Ben Stokes.”

Joe Root said after play he hopes veterans Alastair Cook, Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson are all still playing 12 months from now despite Cook and Broad in particular having next to no impact so far.

Root wasn’t keen on the idea of wholesale changes for the sake of them, saying the team will be trying to bounce back in the final two tests of the series.

But England great Kevin Pietersen said his former side needs to use the result as a catalyst to rebuild.

Vaughan agreed, saying Root needs to decide what he stands for and build a team to replicate the culture he wants embedded within England cricket.

The Ashes-winning captain said it’s time to make hard calls, such as dropping Broad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand.

“Stuart has not bowled well all year,” Vaughan wrote in an article for The Telegraph.

“Taking 25 wickets at nearly 40 is not good enough for Broad,

particularly given some of the wickets he has bowled on.

“He has not bowled in Australia to the standard he would have liked so maybe the call is to leave him out for a while.

“Send him back to county cricket and say, ‘Come on do you really, really want it?’

“Does he want to be touring, putting in all the hard work, training and going to team meetings and living under a curfew?

“Do other senior guys really want that? If they do great, but the only way to find out is to challenge them.”

Meanwhile Root believes his horror Ashes experience will make him a better skipper and player.

Just 10 months into the top job, Root entered the series as one of the best batsmen in world cricket. But his return of 176 runs at an average of 29.33 over the first three Ashes tests has cast doubt on his ability to handle the pressure.

Root has also been forced to deal with a series of off-field scandals that has taken his attention away from the job at hand.

Root is now facing the very real prospect of overseeing a 5-0 series whitewash, with the futures of senior players Stuart Broad, Moeen Ali, and Alastair Cook all in the spotlight.

The 26-year-old said it was bitterly disappointing to lose the Ashes, but vowed to learn from the experience.

“As a captain, you take a lot of responsibility,” Root said.

“You’re always learning, you’re always finding things out about yourself and your team. That can only make me a better player and a better captain.”

Root denied the off-field dramas had affected his own form.

Instead, he said it was simply a case of trying too hard.

“I’m not someone who’s going to make excuses and hide behind stuff that’s irrelevant really,” Root said. “Probably the thing that’s been my biggest detriment is trying too hard. I’ve been desperate for us to win this series.”

Root’s dismissal in the second innings in Perth summed up his plight.

Facing Nathan Lyon’s first delivery of the spell, Root edged a wide one to the wicketkeeper, with the ball deflecting off the gloves and into the hands of Steve Smith at first slip.

Root was criticised for going so hard at Lyon’s first ball instead of taking more time to adjust.

But he said it was a ball he should have put away.

“I’d like to think that if he bowled me that again, I’d smash it for four,” Root said.

Australia’s Ashes victory over England on Monday assured the Steve Smith-captained side of a series win, their first since 2013.

The Australians wrapped the five-match series up in just three tests, claiming back-to-back-toback wins in Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth, leaving the English with just pride to play for in the remaining two clashes in Melbourne and Sydney.

The dominance displayed by the Darren Lehmann-coached side has since been uncovered thanks to statistics provided from a Twitter account called The Cricket Professor.

Committed to providing analysis, statistics and content about all things cricket, the account has outlined some key stats that outline how much better Australia played than England in the opening three tests of the series.

The account highlighted that the Australians bowled more quickly than the English, delivering balls at an average pace of 141.44km/h compared to England’s speed of 135.37km/h.

Their bowlers also found more swing than England’s, with their deliveries swinging at an angle of 0.64°, an average increase of 0.10°, in comparison to England’s 0.54°.

Additionally, Australia (4.56°) delivered with 1.38° more spin than their counterparts (3.18°), as well as middling more balls (228) than the English (211) throughout the first three tests.

A lower-order collapse resulted in Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow’s record 237-run stand, which left England at 368 for 4, count for nothing in the third test.

Instead, this series’ England side became just the fourth team in Ashes history to lose after scoring over 350 runs for a loss of fewer than five wickets in the first innings of a test.

The result gave Australia their eighth straight win in Ashes tests played at the WACA, the best streak any team has had at a venue in the history of Ashes.

By contrast, England have now suffered their seventh successive test loss away from home, with their last non-defeat overseas coming in the form of a draw against India in November 2016.

Bracewell gets the nod Seamer Doug Bracewell will play his first match for New Zealand in 14 months when the ODI series against the West Indies starts at Cobham Oval today.

Bracewell has returned from injury and is in good form for Central Districts and he is the one name captain Kane Williamson would confirm will be in the XI for the game.

“The team will be finalised tomorrow,’’ Williamson said yesterday, ahead of his only game in the series, as he’s having the next two off in a planned mini-break.

“We haven’t played a lot of cricket here and there’s a number of new faces in the squad at the moment.’’

Williamson is pleased to have Bracewell back in the group.

“He’s going really well, preparing well and it’s nice to see him back from injury.

“His knee is recovering nicely and he deserves his opportunity.’’

Bracewell will be expected to provide more runs too.

Williamson said he is targeting a spot between No. 6-8 in the batting order and his talent with the bat is well known.

Now it is time to move on from a fast-medium bowler who can bat to a productive member of the batting group.

Williamson knows the West Indies will be a different proposition in the short form than they were in the two-test loss which started the tour.

“They’ve got so much talent, they’re very gifted in how they go about their business.

“They can hit the ball a long way and bowl fast and a number of guys have had experience in the Caribbean League as well.

“They’re a very dangerous side.’’

Cold war, says Bayliss England coach Trevor Bayliss is suggesting a cricket cold war with Australia in a bid to revive the Poms’ chances in away Ashes series.

Following Australia’s third test win, Bayliss floated the idea of Englishmen playing in the Sheffield Shield to gain experience in Australian conditions. “Cricket Australia won’t let them come out and play Shield cricket, that is for sure.” So Bayliss suggested England turn the tables and restrict the flow of Australians into county cricket.

South African great opens up on Monkeygate saga A former New Zealand High Court judge was involved in one of international cricket’s most controversial disputes, according to a new autobiography by former South African great Mike Procter.

His account of the Monkeygate saga, in which Sir John Hansen overturned a three-match suspension handed down to an Indian player for racial abuse during the 2008 New Years test in Sydney, is damning of Cricket Aus-

tralia’s role in the ugly chapter.

Procter, who was the match referee, has finally addressed his own role in the controversy in a new autobiography almost 10 years since the 2007-08 BorderGavaskar Trophy series threat-

ened to tear the game apart.

Procter’s own version of events supports former Australian captain Ricky Ponting’s own declarations that Cricket Australia folded to appease the Board Of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI) – and

hung Andrew Symonds out to dry.

And documented as long ago as 2011 was Hansen’s assertion that his decision was forced by collusion between the BCCI and Cricket Australia.

Gatlin in new dope scandal Justin Gatlin, the world 100 metres champion, is at the centre of a new doping scandal after members of his team offered to illicitly supply performance-enhancing drugs.

Gatlin and his coach are now being investigated by sports and doping authorities after a Telegraph investigation uncovered how members of his entourage offered to provide prescriptions in a false name and smuggle the substances to America.

Undercover reporters visited Gatlin’s Florida training camp where his coach, the former Olympic gold medallist Dennis Mitchell, and an athletics agent offered to supply and administer testosterone and human-growth hormone for an actor training for a film.

The products were to be provided via a doctor in Austria.

The total fee for the project was $US250,000.

Mitchell and the agent, Robert Wagner, were also secretly recorded claiming that the use of banned substances in athletics was still widespread as they described how positive doping tests could be avoided.

In one meeting, the agent claimed that Gatlin had himself been taking performance enhancing drugs – which the sprinter has strenuously denied in a statement.

On Monday night, Gatlin’s legal representatives announced that he had sacked his coach and revealed more than five years’ worth of official drugs tests to show “he has never tested positive for any banned substance”.

Gatlin’s agent for the last 14 years, Renaldo Nehemiah, said that Wagner had worked for Gatlin on no more than two or three occasions and that the sprinter was not present when banned substances were discussed with the agent or coach.

Justin Gatlin is once again in an unwanted spotlight.

The revelations threaten to reignite the scandal of doping in sport just three years after Russia was said to have systematically doped its athletes.

Gatlin himself has twice been banned for doping, in 2001 and 2006.

The Athletics Integrity Unit

(AIU), which was set up by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in the summer, and the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), said they had opened an investigation into the sprinter, the agent and the coach after being made aware of the Telegraph investigation.

A spokesman for the AIU said that the code of conduct applied to athletes and their support personnel and that “designer drugs” had “always been a challenge for the anti-doping movement”.

A spokesman for the US AntiDoping Agency said: “Investigations stemming from tips and whistleblowers play a critical role in anti-doping efforts.

“We are presently coordinating with the Athletics Integrity Unit in order to investigate these claims fully.”

Lord Coe, the IAAF president, said: “These allegations are extremely serious and I know the independent Athletics Integrity Unit will investigate in accordance with its mandate.”

Gatlin controversially beat Usain Bolt at the Jamaican world record holder’s final competitive race at the World Championships in London last summer.

Gatlin was booed by the crowd, with some commentators unhappy that he was allowed to compete as a result of his chequered past.

The Telegraph began the undercover investigation in July after being told that specific agents and trainers were involved in administering and supplying drugs to athletes and that the regulators had failed to take action.

One of the individuals identified was Wagner, who boasted he had represented some of the biggest names in the sport, including Ben Johnson and high profile British athletes including Colin Jackson, the hurdler, and Dame Kelly Holmes, the Olympic gold medallist.

Johnson was banned for taking performance enhancing drugs in the eighties and was stripped of his 100m gold at the 1988 Olympics.

There is no suggestion that the other athletes have ever taken any banned substances.

Moyes out to prove himself at Hammers

By Tom AllnuTT David Moyes believes he could manage any team in the world and wants to prove it at West Ham. Moyes appears to be instigating a revival at his new club, with Saturday’s 3-0 victory at Stoke their third consecutive game without defeat.

Before then, Moyes’ side had lost 2-1 at Manchester City before beating Chelsea and drawing against Arsenal at home.

They have climbed out of the relegation places and now sit 15th in the table ahead of their Carabao Cup quarter-final away at Arsenal.

Like West Ham, Moyes admits he is also rebuilding his reputation after ill-fated spells in charge of Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland.

David Moyes “I have to come here and show I can do it,” said the Scot.

“If you’re any player you have to come and show what you can do. Your reputation doesn’t stand for anything.

“You have to come here and try to get up and show you’re capable of doing the job. I think I’m

capable of doing the job at any club in the world so I’m sure I can do it at West Ham.” One player to have enjoyed a particular upturn in form is Marko Arnautovic, who cost West Ham a record initial fee of STG20 million in the summer and has scored twice in his last three games.

Arnautovic provoked anger at Stoke by celebrating in front of his former fans, as well as slapping the badge on his shirt and crossed his wrists – the West Ham salute. Stoke’s supporters hurled abuse at Arnautovic throughout the game and Mark Hughes exchanged words with the forward when he was substituted in the second half.

“Of course he should be celebrating, I think actually people want to see the celebrations, don’t you?” Moyes said.

“I think anyone who was at the game said Marko took a battering. If he had taken his top off and run round the ground swinging it above his head, I might have thought it was over the top. All he did was slide to his knees, I don’t know how that in any way was a bad way to have done it.”

Postecoglou off to Japan Europe was calling but outgoing Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou’s next coaching job will be in Japan. The Asian Cup winner has accepted the job in charge of City Football Group (CFG)-aligned J.League club Yokohama F. Rooney on comm service Everton striker Wayne Rooney has said his drink-driving punishment of community service has been relaxing. Rooney, who was sentenced to complete 100 hours of unpaid work, said he has felt welcomed at the garden centre and has been “really enjoying it”. The 32year-old admitted being nearly three times over the legal limit when stopped by police in September and was banned from driving for two years. Rooney, who earns more than $NZ280 thousand a week, said that community service has been a refreshing place.

Deal extension imminent Kevin De Bruyne is close to agreeing a new contract with Manchester City. The Belgium playmaker still has more than three years to run on his deal but City want to reward him for his outstanding form and to secure his services for even longer. Angel’s sale ‘realistic’ Promising Canterbury threeyear-old filly Angel Of Harlem has been sold in a big-money deal that will see her leave our shores.

Clients of Perth trainer Mike Reed have purchased the daughter of Mach Three from her West Melton breeder, owner and trainer Barry Ward.

Angel Of Harlem was placed in both the Harness Jewels and Australasian Breeders Crown as a two-year-old last season and won her second start back on a new campaign at Addington on December 7.

“She flies out tomorrow,” said Ward.

“I didn’t really want to sell her but, at the end of the day, she’s probably not going to beat Mark Purdon’s best ones or Nigel McGrath’s good one (Dizzy Miss Lizzy).

“You’ve got to be realistic – how many Group 1s is she going to win here?

“And the answer would have to be more than two to earn near to what I sold her for.”

Further boost for Bradbury Park Stud Matamata couple Casey and Michelle Dando are living the dream and results like Crack Me Up’s Gr.2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) win at Randwick last Saturday are all part of it.

It provided a timely boost for the Dando’s Bradbury Park going into Karaka’s National Yearling Sales at which its 28-strong draft includes Crack Me Up’s half-brother by Reliable Man being offered in Book 1 (Lot 111) on January 28.

“The win should attract some more interest in the colt,” Dando said.

“He’s typical of the family and will be better as he matures. We sold his sister last year and she was much the same.

“John Chalmers bought her for $100,000 and she went to Perth.

She’s a big, staying type of filly.”

Since taking the big step in 2010 when purchasing 45 acres and establishing Bradbury Park they have gone ahead in leaps and bounds.

Buying a neighbouring block in May 2016 and taking over the management of the former Dormello Stud in Ohaupo and rebranding it Bradbury Park Ohaupo has increased the operation to around 200 acres.

“It allows us to cater for everything we want,” Dando said.

“And then there’s Mum’s 20acre block nearby which is great for the broodmares. This year we’ve foaled 90 mares.”

Dando’s mother, Glenice, has been a great support to her son and daughter-in-law in their venture and is involved in some of their breeding and racing interests, including the broodmares Heartache and her daughter Accidentallyinlove.

“Actually it’s thanks to Accidentallyinlove and Heartache that we are have this place,” Dando said.

“We sold one of Accidentallyinlove’s yearlings for $210,000, another for $170,000 and another two for $160,000 and $80,000.

“Accidentallyinlove has a Sacred Falls filly and is empty and Heartache has been retired this year.

“We’re in with Mum in the Reliable Man-Agent Ziva filly we’re selling at Karaka. She’s very much like Mezmerize (her third dam), who was the last horse Dad bought before he died.”

Dando (44) was just 13 when his father, Ron, passed away 31 years ago and it was through him that he got the racing bug.

“Dad always pottered around with a few horses and I went to the races whenever I could,” he said. “I still remember Dad’s last winner, Bright Anchor. He won at Tauranga (January 1986), Maree Patchett rode him and he paid $75.”

Surgery for McEvoy Leading jockey Kerrin McEvoy has undergone surgery on a hand injury but there is no time-frame for his return. McEvoy broke a bone in his hand in a pre-race mishap at Randwick on Saturday when he was taking Sugar Bella to the barriers. Asama Blue’s value will skyrocket if a Trentham plan can be successfully executed next month.

Trainers Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie are looking to the opening day of the Wellington Cup carnival to provide the well-bred five-yearold with a significant boost for the second stage of her career.

“There’s the Gr.3 Anniversary Handicap and then we’ll assess her after that,” Ramsay said of the Sir Peter Vela-owned mare.

“She’s by Fastnet Rock out of a Sadler’s Wells mare so if we can get black type she will be very valuable.”

Asama Blue, who is in foal to Tavistock, finished a respectable laststart fifth under rider Alysha Collett in the Gr.2 Cal Isuzu Stakes (1600m) at Te Rapa.

“I thought her run was very good,” Ramsay said.

“Weight-for-age wasn’t ideal and she’s the sort of mare that needs to get rolling.

“A couple of times Alysha said she couldn’t get going when she wanted to and she could have run third or fourth if she had got out earlier.”

Meanwhile, the stable will have two runners today at Matamata with the in-form Libretti in the Matamata Tyre Services Handicap (1600m) and Lucidity in the Fashions in the Fields 24 February Maiden (1200m).

“Libretti is an ultra-consistent mare,” Ramsay said. “She’s a tough, genuine Darci Brahma and gives 120 per cent every time and we’re expecting the same again from her.

“Lucidity won a trial quite nicely and we’ve put in a nomination for the New Zealand Oaks.

“We see her as one of our better three-year-olds.”

Moala France-bound?

French club Clermont Auvergne are seeking the signature of Blues midfielder George Moala according to media reports.

Moala, 27, has been named in the Blues squad for next season, but could leave for France afterwards because his hopes of playing another test for the All Blacks are all but over.

Moala has played four tests, but has been overtaken by Anton Lienert-Brown, Ngani Laumape and Jack Goodhue; Sonny Bill Williams and Ryan Crotty are the All Blacks’ midfield incumbents.

Moala played well on debut in Samoa in 2015 – scoring a try in the victory – but failed to make the World Cup squad.

He shone again against Wales in Dunedin last year and played two more tests in 2016 against South Africa in Durban and Ireland in Chicago.

At his best, Moala is extremely hard to stop close to the line and has improved his distribution skills, but players such as Lienert-Brown and Goodhue are regarded by the selectors as having wider skillsets.

The Thunder got off to a hot start, out-scoring the Denver side 32-18 in the first quarter.

Things were a bit closer at half time as Denver fought back, with the Thunder leading 52-46 at the break.

It was a different story in the second half, as Denver flipped the script to out-score Oklahoma City 32-18 in the third quarter as the Thunder didn’t show any energy on the court.

And it looked as though the visitors might have been on track to leave with a win to their name as the fourth quarter ticked down.

But with the score locked at 94 with seconds to go, a Westbrook free throw was enough for the Thunder to sneak away with the result.

Sport Roosters shift Storm game Cooper Cronk’s much-hyped maiden clash against Melbourne won’t be played in front of either NRL club’s fan bases after the Sydney Roosters opted to play their home game in Adelaide. The clubs clash for the first time in round 16 and unless the two NRL powerhouses meet in the 2018 finals, the Friday night Adelaide match is the only chance to see the dual Dally M Medallist go up against his superstar former team-mates Cameron Smith and Billy Slater. After 14 seasons with the Storm, Cronk signed a two-year deal with the Roosters after shifting to Sydney.

Smith praises selectors Triumphant test skipper Steve Smith has heaped praise on the national selectors after their “bold” team changes played a key role in helping Australia reclaim the Ashes urn. Redfern, Smith in Canty side Two Mid Canterbury players have won selection into the Canterbury team to play at the national under 17 tournament in Auckland in January.

Archie Redfern and Will Smith, who play their rep cricket for Mid Canterbury but attend Christchurch Boys’ High School, were named this week following a regional age-group tournament in Timaru.

Mid Canterbury finished fourth in the rain-affected event.

The side was set a big target of 252 by Canterbury Country in the play-off for third on Friday, Harry McMillan 2-28, Redfern 2-36 and Smith 2-45 were the best of the bowlers.

Mid Canterbury was 218 all out with Redfern 100 not out and Smith on 57.

Redfern and Smith will now be part of a 13-man squad headed to Te Atatu Park in Auckland for the national under 17 tournament that starts on January 12.

Mid Canterbury Cricket development officer Mark Reid said their selection was good reward for strong performances at tournament and also recognised the hard work both young men had put into their game over the years.

“Archie had a very strong tournament and was captain.

“He was 100 not out in the last game and he made runs in every

game. Archie was actually a reserve for the Canterbury team last year.

“Will also had a strong tournament and the selectors were impressed with his attitude off the field too. He wants to keep improving his game.”

Mid Canterbury Cricket’s under 15 rep team is competing in its regional tournament in Christchurch this week.

The side posted T20 wins over development teams from Canterbury Metro and Canterbury Country on Monday before being beaten by one of the two Canterbury Metro teams yesterday.

ESPN boss’ drug issues The head of sports broadcasting giant ESPN has resigned with immediate effect after admitting he is fighting a drug problem.
