The redevelopment of Ashburton’s CBD has been given a significant kickstart with a commitment by one of New Zealand’s leading hotel chains to manage a property in the Eastfield precinct.

From the outset the Eastfield group was committed to building an inner town hotel and it has now secured Scenic Hotel Group as its operator. The 60room complex will be built along the Burnett Street side of the development.

Planning will start in the new year, with work expected to start before the

end of the year and when it opens for business the hotel will create a number of jobs as well as bringing tourists into the centre of town.

Eastfield Investments chairman Brian Davidson said the hotel would bring a new dimension to the town centre.

“This hotel development will mean both tourists and business travellers will be right in the heart of the CBD, where they can support local retailers and hospitality businesses, take part in events and help give the town centre the ‘buzz’ our business community says it needs,” he said.

He believes the Scenic Hotel Group was a good fit for Ashburton.

“They’re an expert, quality operator who shares our vision for the centre of Ashburton.”

The hotel agreement underscores the progress being made on-site at Eastfield, Davidson said, with the first anchor project, the Ministry of Social Development building handed over to its tenant earlier this month.

Goodhew down, but not out

While some of her fellow MPs were celebrating their rise in the Parliamentary ranks, Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew spent yesterday packing her political life into cardboard boxes, destination unknown.

When newly elected Prime Minister Bill English named his new cabinet and ministers outside cabinet, Goodhew’s name was not on the list. After holding a raft of portfolios over the past two terms, she is now a backbencher and there’s no hiding her disappointment, she said.

“I didn’t see this coming, there was just no sign and initially, certainly it was a pretty rude shock.”

When she hadn’t received a call from English by Saturday night, Goodhew suspected she might not be in line for a portfolio.

“He called on Sunday and we talked, and talked about what he thought might be a future role for me. We discussed how my skills might be used in the new year. I think there is another role for me,” she said.

She knows 2017 will start without any guarantees and that made the job of packing up her office and farewelling staff very tough.

“I had a choice, I could have left the packing to someone else but I wanted to come up and say goodbye to my staff.”

Some of those will go back into the Parliamentary pool, others will be looking for new jobs. Apart from her electorate staff, Goodhew will be assigned an assistant in Wellington in the New Year, “It will be hard going back to being just a local MP but that’s still the really important job. This will certainly leave a gap but I know I will fill it. I’ve had this amazing outpouring of support. People are

Jo Goodhew being so lovely and that’s eased it a bit, but it has brought me to tears,” she said.

Heading into the summer break without the title minister after her name will make the holidays quite different to previous years, Goodhew said.

“This will be much more of a holiday than the last five years. I won’t be taking away any ministerial reading so it will be a complete break.”

With husband Mark she’s heading overseas for what she says will be her first real break for some time.

Unlike previous years, she’ll be coming back to a clear diary, rather than a scheduled heavy workload.

Politics might be a game of winners and losers, but that doesn’t make it any easier when you’re on the losing team, Goodhew said.

“Yes I’m really disappointed but there are so many very good people who will do a great job. There’s so much talent; it means the Prime Minister was really spoiled for choice. It’s a really strong caucus.

“I’m still MP for Rangitata and this has always been my priority. It’s not like losing on election night, that would be a far worse thing.”

It’s the season for giving and 12-year-old Georgie Cartney decided her gift would benefit a stranger in tough times.

The Year 8 Ashburton Intermediate student cut off her long locks and donated them to specialist wig-makers to make wigs for cancer sufferers.

Then she gave the money she earned from the gesture to the Mid Canterbury Cancer Society.

Georgie and her mum Anna lost good friend Nicky Hogg to cancer recently and Georgie decided to celebrate their friend-

ship by donating her hair. Hogg, who wore a real hair wig, made a plea at her funeral for people to help other cancer sufferers.

Georgie, whose hair reached her waist before the cut last week, said her hair was sectioned into several pony tails and plaited before being cut into 32cm braids. She then donated the locks to a wig-making company in Dunedin.

She had planned to meet the 35cm criteria for payment, but decided at the last minute on a slightly longer hairstyle.

That meant no payment, but mum Anna put her good deed on Facebook and within seven days she had amassed $1830, including a $1000 donation from Australian-based Smith and Sons building company.

Mid Canterbury Cancer Society manager Annie Bonifant said Georgie’s gift was important as wigs helped confidence of people who lost their hair as a result of chemotherapy.

“It is fantastic that someone so young has done this. It’s a huge thing to cut off your hair.”

Town-centre hotel confirmed From P1 Eastfield Investment’s Board had been heartened by the level of confidence shown in their vision for focusing investment and growth on the centre of Ashburton, he said.

“These tenants – one a leader in New Zealand’s largest industry, the other representing the New Zealand Government – can see the distinct benefits of bringing more activity, essential services and business development to the centre of town.”

All up the Eastfield project will come with a price tag of around $40 million and will spread over 10,548m2 in an area bounded by Burnett, Cass and Tancred streets and the Ashburton Arcade.

The group is also making a pitch to have the site become home to the district’s new civic centre and library.

“We believe this is the best way to secure the future of our community, rather than seeing the town become hollow at the centre with fragmented services spread

around the periphery,” Davidson said.

The Scenic Hotel Group is New Zealand’s largest independentlyowned and operated hotel group, currently operating 18 hotels throughout New Zealand and the South Pacific. The new, four star, hotel fits the market perfectly, its executive director Lani Hagaman said.

“There’s a really great business to be established in Ashburton, with support from local businesses and the community,” she said.

It was hectic yesterday morning, as it always is, at Wastebusters headquarters on McNally Street.

But part of the facility is to become a lot quieter now as the public recycling drop-off area shuts down. The changes took place yesterday, and staff spent a lot of time explaining and sending people with their recycling up the road to the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park.

Manager Sharon Breakwell estimated she and fellow staff had to turn away at least 30 cars during the morning, before undertaking their planned closure for the afternoon so they could make extensions to the greenwaste drop off area.

Wastebusters is now focusing on its greenwaste, composting, re-use shop and farm recycling programmes, following the organisation missing out on a bid for the Ashburton District Council’s solid waste contract.

Wastebusters and two other local companies were subcontractors under a bid put

in by Waste Management NZ Limited, which lost out alongside Metallic Sweeping Limited and Mainly Waste Limited, to current contractor EnviroWaste Services Limited.

Breakwell said yesterday it had been surprising and disappointing to lose the bid, and she saw it as a loss for local companies.

Visitors yesterday had been supportive, one bringing biscuits and drinks, and many chatting to find out about the changes.

There was plenty to look forward to, as emphasis on the services the non-profit organisation was continuing to provide would increase.

Breakwell urged Mid Cantabrians to continue to stop in there on their way to the resource recovery park.

“Sometimes things they think could be rubbish, we know other people would like,” she said.

A classic example was an old Singer sewing machine base and vintage push lawn mower were dropped into the scrap metal bin, and these would now be new items for sale in the re-use shop.

More Magic Moments More Magic Moments has raised more than $12,000 for the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. The funds will go towards upgrading the venue’s lighting equipment, ensuring the most up-to-date technology is available for productions. More Magic Moments attracted almost sell-out crowds, with close to 1000 audience members attending the two shows held on Sunday.

E.coli in Lake Hood Ashburton District Council says Lake Hood is safe to swim in again after a high E.coli reading was found in a routine water test last week. Precautionary signs were erected on Friday after the test; a second test yesterday revealed the water safe to swim in. Environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle said the signs advised people not to swim and while E. coli was found in the follow-up tests yesterday it was within acceptable levels. The lake would continue to be monitored.

The cause of the high reading is not known yet.

Traffic management in the case of a malfunctioning rail crossing is the responsibility of police, says KiwiRail.

A spokesperson for the company responded to the Guardian late on Sunday, following the Havelock Street town centre barrier arms, signal lights and bells being locked in the “train coming” position for almost two hours.

Police parked their vehicles

on Havelock Street either side of the tracks after the malfunction occurred about 3.45pm.

Officers signalled to motorists not to enter the area.

However, about 4.30pm the officers left, leaving motorists in the dark as to what was going on.

Motorists became frustrated while waiting for several minutes before doing u-turns and driving off, and others drove around the barrier arms across the railway tracks.

A story in yesterday’s Guardian on a rising tennis star incorrectly named the young player. The seven-year-old is Riley Breen.

His dad Peter, brother Tyler and Ashleigh Leonard are also keen players and Riley is following in the family tradition. The Guardian apologises for the error.

The signals were still frozen at 5.30pm, but were working by 5.45pm.

“There was a one-hour delay in fixing the fault due to the local staff member working elsewhere in the country, meaning another KiwiRail staff member was required to come from Christchurch,” the KiwiRail spokesperson said.

“When a fault like this happens traffic management is up to the police, however trains were instructed to run at a ten kilometre speed limit when passing through the crossing.”

A New Zealand Police spokesperson said police left when they were called to an urgent, priority job in Rakaia.

“The main highway was unaffected by the incident and continued to flow freely,” they said in an emailed response to the Guardian.

A man posing as a delivery driver burst into a Christchurch home yesterday, tied up a husband and wife for three hours, before fleeing in their car. Police are now hunting the intruder who they say is possibly armed and should be considered dangerous. At around 7am, the man entered the home in the Christchurch suburb of Harewood. He has pretended to be a delivery man, police say. He tied up the husband and wife and some three hours later left in the victims’ blue Toyota Vitz, registration number HFD599. The couple then called their son, who dialled 111.

“Police quickly went to the address and canvassed the area, however they did not locate the man or the vehicle,” police said.

Think before you spend this season It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of holiday shopping, but it’s not always as easy to foot the bill.

The National Retail Federation says consumers plan to spend an average of $935.58 during the holiday shopping season – the second highest level on record.

Whether that is a little or a lot for you, we have some expert tips on how to find a comfortable spending level and stick to it this year: Assess Be honest with yourself about your financial situation before you begin.

If you are already struggling to pay bills or carrying debt, you probably shouldn’t take on more.

Avoid extreme measures to pay for the holidays. A recent survey of more than 1000 parents by T. Rowe Price found that while the bulk save for the holidays throughout the year, about a quarter have at some point pulled money from their retirement account, emergency fund or taken a payday loan to cover holiday spending.

Talk Start by saying “no” to some of the more costly holiday traditions that might bust the budget, said Bruce McClary of NFCC. It can be hard to challenge those expectations, but it will be even harder to dig yourself out of a financial hole.

Parents have a particularly hard time when it comes to their kids, said Marty Allenbaugh, a financial planner at T. Rowe Price. He said that parents sometimes find it easier to get everything on a child’s wish list rather than have a more challenging conversation about wants and needs.

Be savvy Credit cards are one of the most popular ways to pay for holiday gifts and that’s fine, unless you cannot pay it off immediately. Think twice before accepting the offer for a store card at checkout, as those often have very high interest rates.

They also have low spending limits, which can increase your utilisation rate — the amount of available credit that you use. And that can hurt your credit score.

Boost for rescue service Westpac Rescue Helicopter service is better off to the tune of $3000 thanks to Ashburton Intermediate School.

Class 8-3 representatives Amelie Dick-Robertson and Madison TruslerClark handed over the donation on Wednesday and Ashburton Westpac branch manager Janice Street accepted it on behalf of the rescue service.

The money was raised at a fun day held at the school last week, and the girls’ class won a poster competition and with it the right to choose what

organisation to donate to.

“We chose Westpac Helicopter because anyone could need to use it,” Amelie said.

Class 8-3 earned the prize for making the most money in the fundraiser and for the best presented stall.

With Amelie at the helm as CEO and Madison her 2IC, the students contributed more than $800 selling Mexican food, art and $2 tickets to guess the number of M&M lollies in a jar.

Volunteers’ input priceless

If Ashburton is a district that runs on the efforts of volunteers, then the hours those volunteers give to their community is likely to run into millions.

This year the Mid-South Canterbury volunteers’ organisation decided it would attempt to get a handle on the amount of time given. Organisations were asked to invite their volunteers to fill in a ‘time-sheet’ for the hours worked over the year.

And while those responding fell far short of the total number of organisations and volunteers, local co-ordinator Dellwyn Moylan said across 68 organisations and 210 volunteers, hours given to the community totalled 52,421 last year.

“That’s only the tip of the iceberg. It’s the first time we’ve done this and we know that there are many, many organisations

and hundreds of volunteers who didn’t complete the forms,” she said.

The idea was to celebrate International Volunteers Day in a different way and to undertake a project that the whole community could be involved in.

“At Christmas most people give gifts; volunteers give the gift of time,” Moylan said.

The youngest volunteer responding to the survey was an 11-year-old and the oldest in her 90s.

“It would be great one day if we could get a bigger picture but that’s difficult because so many people don’t want to be recognised for what they do and most don’t really know how many hours of their time they give.”

This week the volunteers presented a gift box containing a total of their hours to mayor Donna Favel to illustrate their ‘gift’ to the community.

Be aware, don’t drive in a bubble Sue Newman

I

t’s nothing short of a horror story – driving down a quiet road and being attacked by a fellow motorist.

But that’s exactly what happened in the Rolleston ’burbs yesterday when one motorist took exception to another’s driving. He overtook him, slowed to nuisance speed and then allowed the victim to overtake him.

The result was a fit of road rage. The victim’s car was rammed. He stopped and was beaten for his trouble.

At 7.30am you would imagine there wouldn’t be much in the way of traffic on the road, certainly not enough to raise the ire of drivers.

Perhaps it’s a valuable warning with the holiday season just around the corner.

Already it’s an exercise in patience if you’re driving on or around State Highway One at almost any time of the day or early evening; how much worse will it be come Friday?

One of the downsides of having our main holiday period at the same time as the ChristmasNew Year break is the sheer volume of traffic generated as anyone who can, leaves home and heads to family or to a favourite holiday spot.

And big volumes of traffic inevitably means roads are clogged, journeys slow and patience runs short.

At the best of times other drivers’ behaviour can be incredibly annoying. They’re too slow, hog the centre of the road, fail to indicate, speed up in passing lanes, tail-gate or refuse to pull over if they’ve a boat or caravan behind that’s clogging traffic for several kilometres.

Up the volume and the problem is exacerbated many times over. And so too is the potential for tempers to flare.

Only a saint could spend an hour or two on a busy road stuck behind an inconsiderate driver without becoming frustrated.

Unfortunately all too often those who are exhibiting inconsiderate behaviour on the road simply have no idea of the problem they’re creating for their fellow motorists.

If there’s anything we all need this Christmas it’s patience and mindfulness on the road, both for ourselves and for our fellow motorists.

We can’t change the way others drive; we can only change the way we react to their behaviour and the way we drive ourselves.

Two of the biggest shocks of 2016 – UK exiting the EU and Donald Trump being named President-elect of the United States.

2016 – a year of surprises I

wonder what odds a bookmaker would have given you in January on predictions that in 2016 John Key would resign as Prime Minister, New Zealand would suffer another major earthquake, Donald Trump would be US Presidentelect and the UK would be departing the European Union.

I am sure many readers would add to that list, but for me those four were particularly significant when reviewing the past year and looking forward to 2017.

We can debate John Key’s timing till the cows come home but at the end of the day he has chosen his exit from a stellar political career on his terms, what he sees as best for the Key family, the country and the National Party going forward.

There is nothing like a pending election to focus a party and a new leader on delivering policies that they hope will capture attention and deal to key issues.

A big part of going forward will be the recovery exercise for communities devastated by the North Canterbury earthquake.

To fly over the area and witness the scale of land movement is mind-blowing; such a reminder of how influential nature can be when it flexes its muscles.

The disruption to all aspects

of life, business and transportation through that upper South Island region will affect us all for some time to come.

It will require an enormous and costly support and recovery programme to fix the damage but more importantly to manage the wellbeing of those at the coal face, those whose lives have been shattered by the quake and aftershocks.

We know from the Christchurch experience we can do it but a predominantly rural environment produces different challenges that need to be addressed with sensible and timely action plans.

Brexit and Donald Trump pose large trade questions for New Zealand going forward.

The Brexit result immediately had a significant effect on our currency against both the euro and pound, resulting in pressure on all New Zealand exports

Sheep meat in particular has felt the brunt of the strong New Zealand dollar as nearly 50 per cent of our lamb is traded in the UK and EU. We are still witnessing the fallout, with lower schedule prices through what is normally a strong period for UK Christmas trade.

The length of the Brexit programme may well have an influence on our exports for the next two years as the readjustment of trade agreements between multiple nations takes place.

This will be an extremely challenging period for our trade negotiators as they balance our future trade volumes and types to the multitude of markets involved.

to the past days of more trade barriers and protectionist policies.

The TPP trade deal’s future looks sketchy at best. Should it not cross the line, it would appear many bilateral trade agreements may be the future path, especially where the US is involved.

For 2017 and beyond there is much of great importance to be resolved, fixed and supported.

We all can play a part; you will know at what level and which issue your influence can be.

Karak attack kills ten Seven policemen, two Jordanian civilians and one Canadian tourist were killed yesterday when gunmen staged a series of attacks on police patrols and a historic castle in the heart of the southern city of Karak.

According to Jordanian police, at least 20 others were injured, and security sources confirmed that as many as 14 people, mainly foreign tourists, were held hostage by the gunmen.

By evening, according to local media reports, Jordanian special forces had freed them.

During the attacks, as many as 10 gunmen holed themselves up in the Karak Crusader castle, a major tourist attraction and one of the most complete Crusader castles in the world.

Mosques’ loudspeakers across the city called on residents to flee as security operations intensified. Eyewitnesses reported chaos as thousands fled businesses and homes to the surrounding countryside.

Karak Castle is a very popular tourist area.

The injured include a second Canadian tourist and 20 Jordanians, police said.

The identity and number of the assailants remain unknown, and no group has yet claimed responsibility.

A person close to Jordan’s security agencies said authorities believe the assailants were extremists with ties to al-Qaeda or the Islamic State.

The US Embassy in Amman issued a statement to citizens warning of an “active shooter” in Karak, 130km south of the capital, and urged citizens to “avoid that area for the time being”.

Jordan has long been hailed as an oasis of stability and security in the violence-plagued Middle East, with wars and terrorist havens near its borders

with Syria to the north and Iraq to the east. However, the image of stability is being eroded.

The attack marked the fourth deadly targeting of Jordanian security and army personnel this year.

In March, a cell of Islamist militants linked with the Islamic State engaged in a shootout with police in the northern city of Irbid, leaving one policeman and seven gunmen dead.

A gunman killed five General Intelligence Department officers in Baqaa refugee camp, a few miles north of the capital, in June.

Later in June, Islamic State militants executed a truckbombing, killing seven Jordanian soldiers stationed near a makeshift refugee camp along the Jordanian-Syrian border.

In November, a Jordanian officer opened fire and killed three US military trainers at an air base near Jafr used for training Syrian rebels – although the motives behind the shooting are still unclear. - PA

Roberts turns to TV Julia Roberts is set to star in her first-ever TV series. The Hollywood Reporter says Roberts will star in a limited series based on Maria Semple’s novel, Today Will Be Different. Roberts will star as the book’s main character, Eleanor Flood. Semple tells the magazine she’s giddy “Eleanor Flood will be brought to life by Julia Roberts”. Roberts also is set to produce the series. No network for the project has been announced. Roberts has done numerous guest appearances on various TV series over the years, but this project would be her first in a regular role.

Pagan priest wins right to wear goat horns It doesn’t matter how many articles of clothing Phelan Moonsong puts on each day: If he’s not wearing his favourite pair of goat horns, the Pagan priest might as well be naked.

The beloved horns are rarely far from the Millinocket, Maine, man’s scalp when he’s not sleeping.

It’s been that way since he first laid eyes on the horns at a Pagan men’s group gathering in 2009.

He took the horns home, drilled small holes in each one and attached them to his forehead using fishing line.

“As a practicing Pagan min-

ister and a priest of Pan, I’ve come to feel very attached to the horns, and they’ve become a part of me and part of my spirituality,” Moonsong, 56, said.

“The horns are part of my religious attire.”

In August, Moonsong said, officials at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in Bangor told him that he would need to remove the horns to receive a state-issued ID. When he tried to explain the horns were his “spiritual antenna” they were not moved.

Moonsong said he sent the state an essay explaining the

Though he didn’t realise it at the time, Moonsong had

joined a religious freedom battle that is being fought in DMV offices around the US. After several months of waiting to hear following his initial visit, he says he informed the bureau that he was in touch with the American Civil Liberties Union.

His ID arrived in the mail days later, he says. A spokeswoman for the Maine secretary of state said Moonsong had not mentioned the horns were religious in nature during his initial BMV visit.

Kristen Muszynski said: “There are exceptions for religious headdress.”

2degrees cops bigger share of telco levy

Super to invest up to $260m in local SMEs

Two Degrees Mobile must pay a bigger share of the annual levy that funds non-viable telecommunications services as the country’s third-placed mobile operator continues to lift its market share.

The Auckland-based company will pay $3.6 million, or 7.3 per cent of the Telecommunication Development Levy, for the 2015/16 year, up from $2.9 million, or 5.9 per cent a year earlier.

2degrees was the biggest mover this year, easing the burden of the biggest three contributors: Spark New Zealand, Vodafone New Zealand and Chorus.

The levy was introduced in 2011 as part of the enabling legisla-

tion to carve Chorus out of Telecom, now known as Spark, and goes towards a contestable fund that helps pay for projects such as the rural broadband initiative and mobile black spot fund. It replaced Telecom’s telecommunications service obligation, formerly known as the Kiwi Share, which was used to pay for telecommunications infrastructure where it isn’t immediately profitable to do so, such as in rural areas.

Toronto-listed 2degrees posted a 43 per cent increase in annual revenue to $569 million in calendar 2015, generating earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of $78.5 million. The mobile carrier’s qualifying revenue used to determine its

share of the levy rose 24 per cent to $307.3 million.

Spark remains the biggest contributor, paying $18.9 million, or 38 per cent, for the 2015/16 year, down from $19 million, or 38 per cent, a year earlier. Vodafone’s levy shrank to $13.1 million, or 26 per cent, from $13.8 million, or 28 per cent, while the contribution from Chorus was largely unchanged at $11.1 million, or 22 per cent.

The Commerce Commission, which sets the allocations, said the only adjustment to the final was increasing Trustpower’s share because of more detailed information about its qualifying revenue, with the lines company to pay about $51,000, or 0.1 per cent.

■ NEW ZEALAND SUPERANNUATION FUND

The New Zealand Superannuation Fund will invest as much as $260 million over the coming decade in small-scale local enterprises through three new mandates with Kiwi private equity firms.

NZ Super will invest up to $90 million in Direct Capital’s V fund, up to $120 million in Pioneer Capital’s III fund, and up to $50 million in Movac’s IV fund over the next five to 10 years, it said in a statement. Each fund is expected to invest in eight to 15 separate companies.

“New Zealand continues to provide attractive investment opportunities in small to medium-sized companies, which are high growth, typically internationally focused, and able to benefit from the expertise that these managers can provide,” NZ Super chief investment officer Matt Whineray said in a statement. “External managers are a

logical and efficient way for the fund to get access to the growth opportunities in the sector.”

The sovereign wealth fund had assets of about $31.9 billion at November 30, of which about $4.9 billion is invested locally.

The fund’s manager has existing relationships with Direct Capital and Pioneer Capital, though the Movac mandate is a new one.

NZ Super said the Direct Capital fund would operate at the larger end of market, while Pioneer would chase mid-market companies looking at international growth and the Movac fund would focus on early-stage, high growth technology companies. All three funds are new offerings.

Direct Capital’s V fund is a new fund, which closed last Friday with $375 million, which director Gavin Lonergan said will focus on the 850 private companies with an enterprise value of between $50 million and $350 million.

Lack of berths hampering growth

BY SOPHIE BOOT Slow progress in developing ports in Auckland and Lyttelton is hampering the growth of the $490 million cruise ship industry in New Zealand, Cruise New Zealand says.

Executive officer of Cruise NZ, Kevin O’Sullivan, said the industry association was disappointed to learn a new ship planned for the New Zealand and Australian cruise market by P&O Cruises Australia, capable of carrying 4200 passengers, won’t go ahead.

“The good news is that P&O will still bring the 3000 passenger Carnival Splendor to Australia and New Zealand in 2019, but it has cited a lack of infrastructure pro-

gress in the region as one of the reasons for deferring the build of a bigger ship,” Sullivan said.

Slow progress in building berths for larger cruise ships in Auckland, and even slower decisionmaking about a cruise ship berth in Lyttelton, is stifling the industry’s growth here, he said.

“We have huge opportunities to continue to grow cruise tourism and we are missing out because of delays in providing infrastructure.

“The decision by P&O is a wakeup call that we must get our act together to improve cruise infrastructure if we are to continue to enjoy the benefits that cruise tourism brings,” Sullivan said.

“Auckland must provide a berth for larger cruise ships urgently,

and Lyttelton should proceed with bringing cruise ships back, to ensure Canterbury does not miss out on this large tourism market.”

Sullivan said the largest cruise ship to visit New Zealand, the Ovation of the Seas, will come to Auckland in January but is too long to berth, and passengers will have to be ferried from the anchored ship.

A consent application for a mooring dolphin in Auckland, a structure which would allow larger cruise ships to berth, has been delayed and it’s unclear when the structure could be built.

The ship will skip Canterbury as there are no berths available in Lyttelton, he said.

MARKET REPORT Dairy A drier week, but more rain is forecast. The weather is still patchy with below average sunshine slowing clover dominance in the sward.

Excess feed volumes are evident but pasture quality issues are arising – restricting intake, increasing ruminating time and reducing milk yield.

Bulls are out covering the herd post AI and managers are encouraged to keep numbers high to efficiently cover those still to conceive.

The MPI’s Situation and Outlook report suggests that dairy revenue will lift by over 3 per cent in 2017 but by a whopping 24 per cent the following year as production returns to past levels and global milk prices improve.

However, at present sharemilkers report strong bank pressure on their business as they grapple with too much debt and, as yet, unseen improved returns.

Fonterra’s mozzarella plant at Temuka has been heralded as the biggest food service investment in the history of NZ dairying as this company strives to improve returns from added value.

A new CEO is appointed to the top job at Tatua and another nutritional plant is to be built utilising A2 and organic milk in Otorohanga, as competition expands for the nation’s product.

Milk production in Australia is at a 20 year low as droughts and low prices have caused a major reduction in herd numbers.

An organised stock theft scheme is alleged in Otago with agents under suspicion and the fraud squad investigating.

Lamb Processing demand has ramped up this month after historically low numbers in November that made supply commitments difficult for exporters.

Wool This week’s combined island auction with big volumes of wool saw a 79 per cent clearance but prices fell further for all micron levels, except merino, and are at new yearly lows.

The first of the lamb’s wool was also offered and realised prices of 334c/kg clean back on last year’s similar sale. This will put into question the economics of shearing these animals if these prices continue.

Beef Beef schedules came under some pressure this week as bull volumes lift. However, demand is still strong for prime chilled beef with one processor predicting good demand for the next two months.

Some analysts are forecasting beef prices will ease later in 2017 as increased production in the US and Brazil drags down the world market.

Store buyers in New Zealand seem to be ignoring these signals however, as feed and few other alternatives drive the market to very high levels.

Saleyard prime steers in the south continue to enjoy a 20-30c/kg lwt advantage over northern venues as the past North Canterbury drought caused shortages still appear in the supply chain.

Deer More stability in venison schedules as strong demand from the EU for frozen product is sustaining the summer production.

Exporters are reporting strong sales of spring chilled product into the market even at the better price levels.

The challenge for the industry is to maintain these sustainable values well into the future.

Still no news on this season’s velvet pricing; but country of origin labelling trialled by two traditional velvet companies should protect the integrity of New Zealand product in the marketplace.

Christmas at the front

orld War One began midway through 1914 and was meant to be over

by Christmas.

When it wasn’t, Princess Mary, daughter of King George V, was worried that the men fighting under her father’s command would feel left out at Christmas.

The princess created a Christmas fund, and with the help of thousands of ordinary Britons, raised £152,691 for the cause – equal to £15,879,864 today.

With that money she created the Princess Mary Box – a shiny brass tin that contained sweets, tobacco and other gifts for the soldiers. The tins were embossed with the princess’ profile, the words Christmas 1914, and the place of battle, Belgium, France, Serbia, Montenegro, Russia, or Japan. They measured 13cm by 7cm.

Every soldier serving at the front or on a navy ship received this gift. However, with many left out and money left over, eligibility was extended to all who were serving, whether at home or abroad, and to prisoners of war and the next of kin of 1914 casualties. With 2.6 million boxes distributed, many still survive as a reminder of this Christmas past.

Christmas trees On the other side, Kaiser Wilhelm II sent his men pipes, cigars and festive presents, such as mini Christmas trees.

The Christian tradition of decorating a tree is thought to have originated in the 16th century with German preacher Martin Luther. It only became popular in Britain after Queen Victoria’s family – who had German roots on both sides – were pictured in an 1848 drawing of The Queen’s Christmas tree at Windsor Castle.

The picture was published in the Illustrated London News, so many people saw the happy royal family around their family Christmas tree and were inspired to do similar. In Victorian times, the trees were decorated with candles to represent stars.

When in 1914, the British soldiers south of Ypres saw lights and strange shapes moving in the German trenches, they wondered if there was a night attack coming. It was not until the Germans started to sing Christmas carols that they realised that they were just celebrating with their mini Christmas

trees lit with candles.

Comfort parcels Back in Wellington, the Wellington Meat Export Company canned plum puddings made with suet. These were excellent for the troops as they lasted for months, so would make it through the two-month journey to the front without perishing.

However, not all war fronts were created equal. New Zealanders at the French front could count on getting their parcels.

Whereas, those at the Middle East front were less fortunate as no Christmas parcels arrived in 1915.

Instead, the New Zealand soldiers relied on the Australians, who generously shared their comfort parcels.

Luckily, Tasmanian women had

sent a huge quantity of comfort parcels. These included a plum pudding in a billy, cocoa, cakes, chocolates, potted pastes and sardines – whatever the women thought would go down well. The officers chipped in a bottle of beer. As one soldier put it, they did “jolly well” that Christmas.

Souvenirs The flow of parcels was not one way. Soldiers sent gifts home as well. These items varied but were generally souvenirs that were made by local women close to the fields of battle.

Women made all sorts of handcrafts, from table runners and cushion covers to banners and embroidered cards.

Ashburton Museum has several examples, including one featuring holly, sent by Doug Tilley to his mother while he was in England during World War One.

On December 24, 1914, the Ashburton Guardian ran an article stating, “The mail at the front contains an abundance of necessities and clothing and streams of Christmas luxuries. The postal arrangements are splendid.”

Just after Christmas they reported that two and a half million letters and half a million parcels had been received at the front.

That number would include many gifts and letters sent from Ashburton.

Honouring the Fallen During the period of the First World War, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return – almost 450 from Ashburton were killed. The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 – the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men.

The Ashburton Museum, with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains, has erected in front of the museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. An original flag is on display in the museum.

medium heat. Add the onion and saute for 3 minutes to soften. Add the garlic. Stir in the rice and cook until the grains are shiny, about 1 minute.

■ Add 1/2 C of stock and bring to the boil, stirring constantly. When most of the stock is absorbed. Repeat using a 1/2 C of stock each time, cooking until the rice is soft and creamy in texture.This will take approximately 20 minutes. Add the Parmesan and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

■ Slice the cooked chicken. Serve the risotto in bowls topped with the sliced chicken. Garnish with rosemary sprigs and lemon rind.

Jockey’s death investigated Three investigations will run into the tragic death of Riverton jockey Rebecca Black at a race meeting in the South Island on Sunday.

Greg Purcell, chief executive of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing, confirmed yesterday that investigations will be run by the stipendiary stewards in attendance at the Tapanui Racing Club meeting on Sunday; a police report is going to the coroner; and the coroners’ inquiry will investigate the incident in which Black, 40, died after her horse Point Proven stumbled and fell, dislodging her from her saddle.

There’s also to be a Worksafe NZ check as well. ‘’We work closely with Worksafe on all sorts of issues.

“There’s going to be four layers of investigation into the incident, which is appropriate,” Purcell said yesterday.

It appears a horse following Point Proven was “caught up in the incident and couldn’t avoid the fallen horse” Purcell added.

Race eight on the card was a flat race, conditions were good and “unfortunately it’s one of those terrible incidents. After the investigations are completed we’ll know more,” he said.

Two of Black’s children were at the raceday.

Officials will have extensive video coverage of the race, which will go into the various inquiries, and all jockeys will be interviewed.

“The racing industry is a very tight knit community and rallies together with great strength and support during these tragedies.

“Clearly a lot of people are impacted.”

A study on safety equipment for jockeys will be made, but Purcell doubted the coroner will get into great detail on that aspect.

“In New Zealand we adopt world best practice,” he said.

“For more than a decade jockeys have been required to wear safety vests and helmets have been compulsory for decades to an appropriate international standards.

“But that’s only part of it.

“The reality is despite those measures this incident occurred.”

Challenges for rugby in 2017, says Tew New Zealand Rugby boss Steve Tew has summarised the code’s year as a mixed bag, with some exceptional on-field performances tempered by a number of high profile off-field incidents.

Tew highlighted the No1 world ranking of both the All Blacks and Black Ferns, but balanced his praise with some work-ons for 2017 in response to the series of scandals that have enveloped the game.

“The All Blacks broke a world record for successive games won, and our woman are unbeaten in eight tests in a row,” said Tew. “The All Blacks, once again, hold every piece of silverware that we compete for – and every other country would probably trumpet louder than we do – so from that point of view it’s great.

“Also, the Hurricanes got across the line in Super Rugby and we should acknowledge the achievement of our women’s sevens team in Rio to get silver.

“For the men, we clearly weren’t good enough and had a poor result. We have work to do.

“And then we’ve had some things that have challenged the game.”

New Zealand rugby has plenty to work on, says Steve Tew. New Zealand Rugby was criticised for its response to the Chiefs’ stripper scandal after the Super Rugby season finished, and its response to the case of Losi Filipo, a player charged by police with assault.

Then the Aaron Smith controversy, in which he followed a woman into the disabled toilet at Christchurch airport, added to the pressure on the union.

“Despite those high profile issues, we’ve still got more players registered than we’ve ever had, and the game is in good shape.

“But there’s no doubt that the focus we have on our game means that anything that’s good or bad about society ends up being attracted to rugby and reflected in it, and we’ve got work to do.

“That’s why we’ve got a very good group of people together to have a good look at what we are doing and try to give us some advice.”

Tew said the wait for the All Blacks to play England is due to the international programmes determined over a five year cycle.

“It wasn’t that long ago that we played England four times in 12 months and everyone said we played them too many times,” said Tew. “So you’ve got to take a little bit of a deep breath and remember that 12 months ago they got knocked out of the World Cup before making the playoffs, and no one was saying we needed to play England at that stage.

“You’ve got to deal with the immediacy of form, in the context of a programme that’s determined five years out.

“And if that means we have to wait another 12 months to see who the best team is between the All Blacks and England, so be it.

“They might bump their ticket prices up even more, which will be good for us because we get .... oh no that’s right, zero per cent.”

Whitelock takes over as Crusaders’ skipper A desire to ease Kieran Read’s workload has thrust Crusaders lock Sam Whitelock into the captaincy role for their next Super Rugby campaign.

Coach Scott Robertson says All Blacks skipper Read needs to “enjoy” playing and that can be achieved by lightening the leadership load in 2017.

Experienced All Blacks lock Whitelock, 28, was captain during the opening weeks this year while Read was rested.

He is well-equipped to fill the

role full-time in a move which Robertson believes will provide some zest for 31-year-old Read, who will lead the All Blacks in the mid-year test series against the British and Irish Lions.

“Kieran has been an excellent captain, he is a courageous leader who the players admire and love,” Robertson said.

“But this will allow Kieran to focus on just playing and enjoying himself in the Crusaders environment, rather than juggling the responsibility of being both

All Blacks and Crusaders captain.

“It will also allow Sam to really take ownership of this position and influence the team in his own way.”

Whitelock, a 83-test veteran, described his new role as a privilege.

Guineas not an option

Bright future ahead for filly Richard Collett has no doubt that his progressive three-year-old Florence Hill will be at her best over a classic trip.

“She’s a 2400 metre filly and she always has been,” the Pukekohe Park trainer said.

“She’s a big, rangy type so there’s a few options ahead of her.”

Florence Hill exceeded expectations when she was successful on debut at Ruakaka in October and she backed that up with a third placing against the older horses on her home course last month.

“She surprised me a bit firstup, that was a bonus, and I wanted to get her on a bigger track here at Pukekohe,” Collett said.

“Unfortunately, she drew the outside over 1400 metres and she really got home well.”

The stable is now keen to test Florence Hill against the best of her age group.

“We’ll probably run her at Ellerslie on Boxing Day in the Eight Carat Classic,” Collett said.

Smart three-year-old Top Prospect will miss the Gr.2 Jamieson Park Great Northern Guineas at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. “He pulled a muscle. It’s nothing serious and hopefully he won’t be away from the races for long,” trainer Richard Collett said. Top Prospect, unbeaten in his last three starts, remains on target for the Gr.1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby.

Florence Hill holds a nomination for the Gr.1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby, as does her talented stablemate Top Prospect, while the Gr.1 Wellfield New Zealand Oaks is another obvious longer-term target.

Meanwhile, stablemate Selfie turned in an encouraging laststart effort for second at Ellerslie.

“That was almost two years to the day since he won his only race,” Collett said.

Selfie, who also finished runner-up in the 2015 Karaka Million, has had his share of setbacks in the interim and his preparation last season was interrupted by surgery to remove a bone chip from his knee.

While he has won only one race, Selfie has earned nearly $210,000 and he will get a further opportunity at Ellerslie on Boxing Day to add to his bank account.

Ashwin the innovator

By Liam SanderS With a victory over England in the fourth test by an innings and 36 runs, India’s cricket team have secured their fifth consecutive test series win and have now gone over four years without losing a test match on home soil – a run of 18 matches.

Throughout this period we witnessed the meteoric rise of Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s prize test match finger spin bowler.

Ashwin, now the number one ranked bowler in world cricket has amassed 15 five-wicket hauls in tests, the highest for any bowler in two successive calendar years.

In September he became the second-fastest bowler to claim 200 test wickets in his career.

Statistics aside, success on the world stage is not a matter of chance, quite the contrary.

Ashwin’s journey is a culmination of his technical refinement, innovation and the team-mates who bowl alongside him.

While there are many facets that contribute to a successful spin bowler, imparting a high number of revolutions on the ball is seen as critical and the main cause for both the ball’s drift in the air and deviation off the pitch.

A study on the biomechanics of elite finger spin bowling profiled 30 elite male finger spin bowlers over a four-year period.

Researchers explored the technical factors within a bowling action that influence the rate at which a ball spins.

The team observed very strong positive relationships between the orientation of the bowler’s pelvis and the rate at which the ball spins during flight, particularly at the instance of front foot contact and ball release.

These findings created a compelling argument that highly advanced motions of the pelvis are paramount to producing high spin rates to the ball and therefore that spin bowling should not be solely thought of as an upper arm skill.

The movement during the ball’s flight is due to its “lift” or Magnus force, which affects the way a ball reacts during motion.

This movement occurs because on the side of the ball which is advancing due to the spin motion the air flow is slowed down, creating a high pressure region. On the other, receding side, it creates a low pressure region.

There’s a reason run machine Shania-Lee Swart barely batted an eyelid after she scored 160 of her team’s 169-run total in a T20 match last week. To the 17-year-old South African leading her team to a victory despite nine other players in her team scoring ducks wasn’t an achievement she expected to create headlines all over the world.

But Shania-Lee isn’t most cricketers. Only a few days before clubbing 160 Shania-Lee had a pretty handy day out in a onedayer. Batting at first drop for Mpumalanga under-19 women’s team, Shania-Lee fell just short of a triple century.

Amir copping quips Australia’s bowling coach David Saker has taken a dig at Mohammad Amir, a few hours after the Pakistan paceman copped a spray from Mitchell Starc. Amir scored 48 on day four of the day-night test in Brisbane, producing the highest score of his test career. Amir had an absorbing battle with fellow left-armer Starc. The pair swapped verbals, with Starc staring down his opponent and barking “what was that mate!? ... did you have something to say?!”. Saker made light of the flare-up, poking fun at Amir’s antics on day one. “I don’t know, it might have had something to do with his knee injury on the first day,” Saker said.

The difference in pressure causes a lateral force perpendicular to the ground and a lateral movement of the ball during flight.

This is known as drift.

The force of the lift will vary in direction and magnitude and depends on the amount of spin and the axis along which the ball is spinning.

Coming back to Ashwin, since 2012 he has noticeably made a number of key technical changes to his bowling action to improve alignment and promote a transfer of momentum throughout his delivery stride.

He now bowls with a slightly open pelvis orientation when his front foot hits the ground.

He now has the ability to rotate his pelvis effectively and efficiently, promoting the transfer of kinetic energy from the pelvis to

the hand as he releases the ball, and so injecting greater spin onto the ball.

Ashwin’s rise to stardom has to be partly credited to his orthodox left arm spin partner, Ravindra Jadeja.

Between November 2015 and the end of the fourth test against England in mid-December 2016, India’s star duo had accumulated the most wickets in test cricket – an incredible 124.

The pair are unrelentingly accurate, with Jadeja mounting great pressure, bowling 53 maidens in the current series against England alone.

Ashwin commonly delivers his stock ball with an initial release speed around 54mph.

Variations of pace close to this speed may exploit a batsman’s mental template and take advantage of the batsman’s subtle

“blindness” to length and speed.

This can create a fatal weakness in judgement, particularly for any new batsman at the crease.

Ashwin can also be considered as one of the modern game’s great innovators through his use of a unique delivery known as the carrom or sodukku ball, meaning snapping of fingers in the Tamil language.

When delivering the carrom ball, Ashwin spins the ball using half as many revolutions as he would with one of his regular deliveries.

As a result it is very difficult for the opposing batsman to distinguish and therefore a dangerous tool of deception.

All this has combined to make Ravichandran Ashwin one of the most effective bowlers in today’s modern game.

Wakanui honours to Lowe Famous With club championship titles on the line, racing was fast and spirited in the Tinwald Cycling Club’s 64km mass start event around the Wakanui Beach block on Sunday.

A solid nor-wester ensured there would be no easy ride, creating early splits in the field.

The lead bunch containing nine of the main contenders got into their work from the start.

It was Stu Lowe who produced the number one ride of the day proving too strong in the charge to the line to take overall victory and the veteran 2 title.

Brad Hudson pulled out his best ride of the season to snare second place and vet 1 honours.

Darryl Kircher led the bunch sprint in, to take the final podium position.

Steve Hands was in the thick of the finish to claim fourth spot and senior honours.

In the chasing group a battle was taking place between the two leading women contenders.

Kristine Marriott pulled out her trademark sprint to take the women’s open victory and vet 1 title.

Rachel Thow produced a top shelf ride securing the second place spoils.

Michelle Davidson reaped the rewards of a good ride securing third place overall and the vet 2 title.

Ryan Jackson and Michelle Knight battled bravely in the challenging conditions to lift the under 19 and senior women’s titles respectively.

On the night San Antonio retired Tim Duncan’s jersey, LaMarcus Aldridge delivered a performance befitting the NBA great in a 113100 win over New Orleans.

Aldridge had 22 points and seven rebounds as the Spurs won their fourth straight game, Aussie playmaker Patty Mills chipping in 11 points and a team-high seven assists off the bench.

Sport Gatland story speculation A report that Warren Gatland will quit his post as Welsh rugby coach next year and return home to New Zealand has been scotched by all parties. The Daily Mail reported that Gatland will stay in New Zealand after the British and Irish Lions tour in June and July next year. He is head coach of the Lions for the second time. The report said the former All Black will cut short a lucrative sixyear extension he signed in 2013 to take him through to the next World Cup in Japan. However, Gatland has dismissed it as speculation.

Stellar season rolls on

Mid Canterbury’s rowing superstar, Veronica Wall, has been at it again.

The Ashburton College student, who has just completed Year 12, clean-swept her rivals at a Christmas Regatta on Lake Karapiro on the weekend – winning three separate age groups with consummate ease.

One of the real rising stars of rowing in New Zealand, Wall has enjoyed a stellar 2016 includ-

ing an unprecedented four gold medals at the Maadi Cup Regatta back in April as well as both Canterbury and South Island Championships.

She signed off on 2016 in a similar fashion on the weekend too.

The only Ashburton representative at the regatta, Wall went through her six races for the event unbeaten.

Wall breezed through the Under 17 girls’ single sculls with a smashing performance in the

heat before producing another great effort in the final – albeit 19 seconds slower than her heat performance.

Then she dealt out more of the same in the Under 18 singles sculls event – winning her heat by nearly 30 seconds before running through the final with a time of just under nine minutes.

The superstar saved her best for the open grade event however, winning her heat in a time of eight minutes and 34 sec-

onds before improving on that dramatically in the final to win the women’s senior single sculls final in a time of eight minutes and four seconds.

As well as her results on the water, Wall has been cleaning up on solid ground as well this year.

She was awarded the prestigious Jubilee Cup from the Canterbury Rowing Association and was also crowned Aoraki’s Female Sportsperson of the Year.

Hopkins’ last fight Joe Smith Jr. stopped Bernard Hopkins 53 seconds into the eighth round of their WBC international light heavyweight title fight on Saturday.

Smith used a six-punch combination to send Hopkins through the ropes and on to the floor, effectively ending the 51-year-old’s 28-year boxing career. Smith successfully defended his title when Hopkins was unable to return to the ring after 20 seconds.

Hopkins hit his head on the way down and twisted his right ankle he cited the ankle as the reason he couldn’t finish.

Smeltz back at Phoenix Shane Smeltz has signed for the Phoenix for the rest of the A-League season. Smeltz, who won the Golden Boot in his second season with the Phoenix, is returning to the club where he began his A-League career.

Smeltz, 35, has signed with the Phoenix for the rest of the season and sees no reason why he can’t earn another contract for the following year. “I am physically in top shape as my stint in Malaysia showed. I played 90 minutes in every game. I am stronger than when I was at the Phoenix the last time.”
