The former Oasis star was dining out with 14-year-old Anais when she joked that she would be so excited to meet her heroes she would probably lose control of her bladder. However, her smiles turned to horror moments later when Styles arrived at the eaterie and her famous father left her red-faced by loudly reminding her of the remark. Anais Gallagher told Grazia magazine, “Harry seems really nice. I was in a cafe once and Harry came in. I’d been joking that I’d probably wet myself if 1D walked in. So my dad started kicking me under the table and shouted, ‘Are you going to wet yourself now?’ I literally died.”

One Direction split prediction Veteran pop star Donny Osmond has predicted One Direction will split up in 2016 and Harry Styles will launch a successful solo career. The Puppy Love singer has been a keen observer of the hit boy band, who formed on the UK version of The X Factor in 2010, but he is convinced they only have a maximum of 18 more months in the spotlight before bowing to the inevitable breakup. He says, “One Direction are huge and there is real talent there but they have a year, year and a half left. We all know it and I think they know it. But keep your eye on Harry, he has the work ethic. I learnt the hard way that you can’t just ‘decide’ to be a solo artist, but he will make it work.”
Little gives hope for future Labour Leader Andrew Little’s first security job, to help fund his way through university study, was at the Otaki Maori Racing Club. “I stood guard at one of the totes watching the money coming in and going out. “There was one chap who won about $11,000 and he wanted it paid out in cash. “It caused a flurry of activity for about half an hour while they scraped up the money to pay him.” Mr Little enjoyed being back at the club on Thursday mixing and mingling with punters at a Christmas at the Races meeting. Aside from the cut and thrust of Parliament, the thing he enjoyed most was meeting everyday New Zealanders, he said. The focus for the new year was getting out and about and “maximising my time away from Parliament and talking to people about their issues”. “Help is on its way,” he said, for those who voted National because they didn’t feel there was a viable alternative. His party was refreshing and people could look forward to some “new thinking, new ideas and new approaches”. “I think they’ll be pleasantly surprised.” A major policy review was under way. “We clearly have to do policy development and announcement a lot differently.
Johnson up for athlete of the year Fearsome fast bowler Mitchell Johnson is one of four finalists in the running to become the Australian Institute of Sport’s athlete of the year. The bowler, named as the ICC Cricketer of the Year earlier in 2014, is joined on the diverse shortlist by surfer Stephanie Gilmore, canoeist Jess Fox and professional shooter Warren Potent. While they headline and chase the top award, in a nod to the future current Utah Jazz guard and number five overall draft pick Dante Exum heads the list for junior athlete of the year, a title he won in 2013 and is nominated alongside cyclist Amy Cure and high jumper Eleanor Patterson. With the awards broadening to include more sports, hence Johnson’s chance to win as a cricketer - Australian Institute of Sport director Matt Favier said the inaugural AIS Sports Performance Awards reflects the new and expanded role the AIS plays in sport. “The old AIS awards have been won by some great athletes but the timing is right to expand the pool of talent eligible to win some of the country’s most prestigious sports awards.”

Police nab Santa Even the most important Christmas person in the world is not immune to the law, regardless of how hectic his Christmas schedule might be. Wairarapa police confirmed Santa was pulled over on Cornwall St in Masterton on Thursday, after being clocked speeding by a patrol car. Police were respectful of Santa’s privacy and did not disclose exactly how fast he was travelling, but advised the ticket issued was fairly minor and that Santa remained good-natured throughout proceedings. The good-humoured man in red posed for a photograph with his ticket and driver’s licence, which found its way on to Facebook. When asked where he was headed, Santa reportedly replied “the North Pole”. Police understood Santa was, in fact, travelling to dispense Christmas cheer at Kandahar rest home. But Santa proved as elusive as ever as inquiries failed to turn up any trace of Mr Claus.

The Ashburton District Council is assuring ratepayers it is keeping a tight rein on costs and completion times for big ticket project the EA Networks Centre. When the project’s construction was signed off it carried design and construction costs of $32.7 million ($31 million construction cost). The centre is now expected to open next year with a final cost of just over $34 million but virtually every dollar of the 8 per cent over-run can be accounted for. A budget had been approved for $525,000 of fit-out costs in
the complex but in September the council approved an extra $100,000. In addition it signed off on $250,000 for information technology purchases. When complex manager Steve Prescott asked district councillors for extra money he told them it was for items that were needed to ensure the complex ran properly. Before spending any of that money, however, Mr Prescott said he would seek sign-off from the council’s stadium committee. A significant portion of the increased cost comes on the back of a change in construction method for the knee joints in the complex’s roof, council
capital projects manager Viv Eyberg said. These were tendered with welded joints but a peer review saw two engineering experts differing in their opinion of the best and safest construction method, bolted or welded. “When that happens, you err on the side of caution,” he said. The change added $600,000 to the construction bill but this has been clawed back to $300,000 by juggling costs in other areas. Additional costs have been incurred around consultancy, building and development contributions, consents and traffic design. All up, the council is likely to
have put an extra $1.836 million into the project. On a project with tight tender conditions and small margins there would always be juggling needed to cope with the inevitable changes and delays, he said. “You sometimes have to lean a bit heavier on the contractors.” His job is to identify potential problems, changes and issues that are likely to delay the project and to find a way to keep it on time and on budget. The project is currently running 10 days behind schedule but Mr Eyberg is confident that time will be made up over the next three months of construction and during the pre-opening commissioning period.
“Unfortunately you get held up with little things that are beyond your control. Like the bull-nose glass tiles for the pool. They came from Italy and they were cracked when they arrived.” That was the contractor’s problem but it took a little pressure to ensure these were replaced and more time wasn’t lost while a new shipment arrived, Mr Eyberg said. Fundraising for additional seating in the complex has been handed over to the Ashburton Stadium Trust. This is likely to cost $320,000 and they will seek the money through a variety of external funding sources.

Packed houses for concerts The Mid Canterbury Choir were festively kitted out in red, black and green for their annual Christmas Concert performances yesterday at St Andrew’s Church. Under the musical direction of Sylvia Watson, the choir performed two concerts to almost packed audiences. They performed 12 festive songs chosen by choir members and included Mary’s Boy Child, One Small Child, Peace on Earth, Deck the Hall and The Star Carol. Soprano Olivia Brown, the inaugural recipient of the Mid Canterbury Choir scholarship, was guest soloist and Deborah Sloper the piano accompanist. The concerts were the final events for Mrs Watson, who was retiring from the musical director role after 11 years. Mrs Watson described the Christmas concerts as “a little escape from the rush and busyness of outside”.

An Ashburton band which has played the majority of its music in garages has been handed the unexpected opportunity of a lifetime. The band, Two Crates, has been asked to play at Rhythm and Vines – a popular annual music festival held over three days near Gisborne – on New Year’s Eve. They’re determined to be there, but the problem is they only received the invitation out of the blue on Tuesday night so they’ve got just days to organise it. They’re planning on driving and taking the ferry with all their gear, but it’s not going to be a cheap trip. So that’s where the community comes in. The band has already had some businesses offer sponsorship, but they’re hoping more people or businesses might come on board. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime for a band which has only been together for a couple of years. “We used to catch up casually just playing the guitar and teaching each other a few things, and before we knew it we were in a garage with a few amps,” founding member Mark Andrew said.

It started with Mark on bass, Pete Trembath and his brother Rob Davis on guitar. Soon they were joined by more – vocalists Rocky Bull and English woman Gemma Bell, and experienced musician Tamati Taukamo – but still, most of what they did was purely for the joy of it. “We are literally straight out of the garage. We’ve played the
odd thing here and there but apart from that …,” Mark said. Rocky said the band wrote its own music, and that’s what they’d be playing at Rhythm and Vines. “It’s an opportunity we don’t really want to lose. It’s pretty cool to be phoned in the first place,” Rocky said. Gemma won’t make the trip to the North Island – she’s off
home to the UK for six weeks – so they’ll have to make a few adjustments, but will stick to their style – one they reckon is all their own. “It’s just good, hardy, Kiwi music. While there was no indication the property had been used as a P-lab, initial testing returned a positive for methamphetamine, she said. After the house was vacated and boarded up, a comprehensive testing schedule was un-
dertaken, including air and surface testing, to determine the level of contamination. The tests also identified the best way to remediate the property, which could have ranged from cleaning to demolition. With the testing regime completed, Ms Milton said Housing New Zealand had determined a full decontamination was required. This will see carpets, drapes, whiteware and chattels
removed and discarded. “To protect our staff and the wider community, the property has been fully closed up. We will conduct thorough testing at the property after this decontamination work to ensure all traces of methamphetamine have been removed so the house is safe for re-letting,” she said. Costs for specialised cleaning can range from $20,000 to $40,000.
Children on sparkly decorated bikes, scooters and in buggies will be out in force tomorrow at the Methven Christmas parade and party. The free community event starts with judging at the Methven Fire Brigade at 2pm. The street parade starts at 2.30pm and will be followed by a party in the Bank and McMillan Street reserve. Bike helmets are compulsory, but kids can have as much tinsel or bling as they like. The annual event will also include bouncy castles, face painting, balloon twisting, a lolly scramble and a visit from Santa. There will also be food and drink vendors on site.
Shopping hours Shoppers will have the chance to finish off any last minute Christmas shopping over the weekend. The Ashburton Arcade, together with Todd’s of Ashburton will be open during the day on Saturday and Sunday, and will also push their hours out to 8pm on Monday and Tuesday. Sparrow’s, together with other retailers on the same block, will also be open this weekend. Paper Plus Ashburton will be open this weekend with its regular Saturday and Sunday hours. The bigger chain retailers will continue their seven day a week operating hours.

Prison staffer stood down BY REBECCA QUILLIAM An Auckland Prison staff member who was accused by convicted murderer and paedophile Phillip Smith of helping him flee the country has been stood down while a police investigation is under way, the Corrections Department says. Police have spoken with the staff member and executed two search warrants at separate addresses in relation to the allegations, District Commander Superintendent Richard Chambers said. “No further arrests in connection to the investigation were made during this morning’s activities.” Corrections Department northern region regional commissioner Jeanette Burns said the department’s Professional Standards Unit was working with
police and assisting them with their inquiries. “The overwhelming majority of our staff fulfil their duties with integrity and commitment, in what is often a pressured and challenging environment,” she said. Corrections said it took such allegations against its staff very seriously. If the staff member was charged the employee could face court and serious consequences if found guilty. Meanwhile, Christopher Ryan Clifton appeared in Wanganui District Court yesterday on charges related to Smith’s alleged escape. The 25-year-old man was charged on December 9 under the Passports Act with making false representations. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. - NZME

Six years ago today, a young Ashburton father was hit by a car and killed. But the person driving the car that killed Stewart Howell has never been found. For his family and friends, it’s hard knowing that someone out there knows something but isn’t talking, and it’s just as frustrating for police. Mr Howell was later found by police to have been lying on the road – Albert Street – when he was hit by the car. He suffered high impact injuries to the head, chest and abdomen and died on his way to Ashburton Hospital following the incident in the early hours of December 20, 2008. The injuries were described as nonsurvivable by a coroner in 2010. Ashburton Police detective Sean Millington said the Howell case was currently deactivated, but police were always keen to hear from anyone with any information.
He said it was disappointing not to have made an arrest in the case, but no one had come forward with information which had led police to finding the driver. At the time of his death Mr Howell had recently become father to a baby boy, Tyler. He was just three months old when his dad died. In 2010, a coroner said Mr Howell – a mechanical assembler who had been at a work function earlier in the evening – had a blood alcohol level of 266mg/100ml, at least three times the then legal driving limit, when he was killed. It was determined Mr Howell was lying on the road, across the centreline, in poor light and heavy rain at the time. He was found by a passing motorist some time after being hit. Police are still hopeful that someone may be able to provide information to help solve the case. If that’s you, contact Ashburton Police or Crimestoppers.

Big effort for Ronald McDonald House

Finlayson to open Attorney-General Christopher Finlayson will officially open the Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre in February, it was announced yesterday. It will be officially opened on February 14 on what will be Mr Finlayson’s second visit to the centre. In April he toured the building in his role as Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage and although it was still under construction he was impressed with the facility and the services it will provide the community. Mr Finlayson said he was looking forward to seeing it open. “It is the culmination of a lot of work by a number of dedicated people over a long period. It is going to be a brilliant attraction and facility for Ashburton and the wider region.” Mayor Angus McKay said Mr Finlayson’s enthusiasm for the project during his last visit was a much-needed boost for all involved. “And his subsequent signing off on the $1.1 million grant from the Regional Museums Fund has really put this facility on the map in terms of its importance to our community and the wider Canterbury region,” Mr McKay said.

As well as housing the art gallery and museum, the centre includes a district archive and the Ashburton Family History Group, bringing together the district’s cultural and heritage collections, displays, information and expertise into a single purpose-built space. The centre also features a dedicated education space that will enable both the art gallery and museum to offer a range of education and information services for schools and the wider community. Mr McKay said the aim of the project had been to bring together the services, to have a place where the district’s history and culture could be looked after and provide the community with interesting and stimulating exhibitions. “Having seen the quality of the museum’s new permanent display and the exhibitions planned by the gallery I can assure everyone that both locals and visitors alike will be really impressed by what we have managed to create here. “The art gallery and heritage centre is an investment in our future. It will be the heart of knowledge and learning for the district and I can’t wait for it to open so we can all start enjoying it.”

Ballerina Nica-May Raukawa made a special effort last weekend to be healthy and dance better than she has ever danced before. The three-year-old was among more than 100 dancers presenting Tis The Season by Dance Worx at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. The show was a sell-out and $5000 was raised and presented to Ronald McDonald House South Island this week. Nica-May suffers from Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis, a rare cancer-like bone disease, and is a Ronald McDonald House regular. Saturday’s performance was following chemotherapy treatment one week earlier. Her mum Anna said the treatments often made her daughter tired, but she had just made up her mind to be well on Saturday night because she loved dancing so much. She has chemotherapy treatment scheduled from tomorrow to Wednesday in Christchurch. Her mum Anna is hoping hospital staff will give the all-clear so she and Nica-May and her younger daughter, two-year-old Neilan, can make it home for Christmas. However, if not, she will be in Ronald McDonald House for Christmas, and her husband, Brad, will join them there. House trustee Rob Aitken, who received the cheque from Dance Worx, said

Dream sports centre has bee When Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre opens next year, it will wrap up a project that can chart its roots back to 1949. Reporter Sue Newman takes a look at the centre today and follows the path taken since a handful of residents dared to dream 65 years ago.

oday, Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre is a hive of activity, tradesmen of every code are working in every corner of the Riverside complex. Within four months those tradesmen will be gone, the centre’s doors will be open and the business will be about people having fun, enjoying what is proving to be one of the most ambitious and most widely supported projects ever undertaken by the Ashburton District Council. It has grown from the dream, and with the drive, of a handful of enthusiasts who inspired a community. The council had had plans for the complex on the backburner for several years, and in 2001 a working party was formed to investigate the project thoroughly and to begin the public consultation process. Over the next three years the project was examined from every angle, reports were written and extensive consultation was carried out with user groups and the community. The first public meeting was held in 2003 and by 2005 the project had gained significant traction. A team of seven sports and business people had become the project’s community trustees. The
Ashburton Stadium Trust was born. This trust would go on to raise well over $5 million for the project as the community’s contribution to what would be a project that was tendered at around $32 million. The council was determined to test public commitment, requiring the trustees to have $5 million raised or pledged before work on the stadium and pool complex would start. Along the way there were checks, assessments, reviews and more community meetings. Initial design work was carried out, expressions of interest were called from architects with Warren and Mahoney signed on in February 2012. Detailed design work was completed in April last year, the first sod was turned in May and construction began in July. Eighteen months later the stadium has taken shape, much of the work is completed and just four months of finishing remains before the pools are filled. And no one is happier about the progress being made than complex manager Steve Prescott. He’s clearly proud of the multi million dollar, multi sports centre. Since he came to the job, he’s eaten, slept and breathed the complex, knows
every corner of the thousands of square metres it covers. More than 4000 square metres will become the court area for a range of sports. The four courts will each have markings for several codes and the playing surface in the stadium area is a sprung beech timber floor. Each court has its own electronic scoreboards that can be operated courtside and each has a range of goal options that can be swung into place. The court area can be divided in half to allow

two different events to be held at one time. While there will be courtside seating for around 350 people, there is sufficient space to allow additional seating to be wheeled in for top level matches that are likely to attract large crowds. In the aquatic centre, swimmers will have four pool options – the main 25 x 25 metre pool, a smaller learn to swim pool, a hydro therapy pool and a water play area dedicated to small children, complete with a lazy or
rapid river. There is also a spa in the main pool area. Each pool can be accessed by wheelchairs which was one of the key requirements of the aquatic centre, making it accessible to everyone, Mr Prescott said. He’s determined that all pools will be available to the public at all times - except when a major meet is being held in the main pool. The pool area is a work in progress with the children’s pool still taking shape and work con-
tinuing on the area’s ceiling. The complex is accessed from the River Terrace car park and takes visitors into an expansive foyer and reception area. To the left is the stadium gym and to the right a café. This is divided into two areas – wet for pool patrons who want a mid swim snack and dry for visitors who’re calling in for a coffee or lunch. The council has called for expressions of interest to run the café.
puts town on the map have attracted a hefty subsidy from the Government of the day. The project didn’t fly, but it didn’t go away. Instead it morphed into a plan to site a sports hall in the Ashburton Domain. The idea was given the green light by the Ashburton Borough Council in 1950 with planning well under way by 1953 for a 126 feet by 90 feet building that would come with an estimated cost of $44,000. Additional to the main hall were plans for a squash court, gymnasium, boxing training room and tiered seating for 450 people. An 80-seat cafeteria was also planned.
Almost $12,000 had been raised for the project but Walnut Avenue residents scuttled it before the first sod was turned. Heads would roll if the council decided to build a sports complex on their doorstep, they said. Again the stadium project had hit a brick wall, but its supporters were determined and turned their eyes to a large shed on Tancred Street that had been used as a garage by Ashburton Motors. The stadium committee bought this in 1954 for $30,000 and it became today’s sports hall.
In the early 1970s the stadium project saw the light of day again. Mayor of the day Darcy Digby was keen on a substantial community facility that could be Ashburton’s centennial project and Centrepoint 100 was born. It failed to gain traction as borough councillors were divided on its value. The centre was planned for the site of today’s EA Networks Centre. When the first riverside stadium was proposed its price tag was estimated to be $450,000 (its critics said $1 million). Today’s version is likely to be completed at a cost of around $34 million.

Ashburton Coldstream rest home residents have experienced hundreds upon hundreds of Christmases between them. Guardian reporter Susan Sandys asked some about their most memorable times of the festive season.
I have six boys and two girls and we would all go camping at Cosy Nook in the South Island. Their mother didn’t like camping, she didn’t like roughing it. My favourite thing about Christmas is the expression on the kids’ faces when they open up their presents, that’s priceless isn’t it? 171214-SS-006

What I loved about Christmas was the Christmas pudding my mother made. She would boil them wrapped in cloth for six hours in a huge saucepan, then they hung in the laundry off the kitchen. I was brought up in Blackball. We hung up a stocking when we were very small and we might get an orange, always a book, and a few little sweets, if we were lucky a little doll. We had evenings around the piano and we would sing carols.
Sometimes we made our own decorations, we used to keep tinsel paper from chocolates, you saved all that, you would use that to decorate the tree because you could put it around branches. Christmas presents would arrive by mail and mum put them all away and hid them, we weren’t allowed to open them until Christmas day. I was a wireless operator for the navy in the Korean War. A message from the Waiouru naval wireless station said a train had derailed. It was the Tangiwai rail disaster of 1953. Keep safe this Christmas Christmas is a happy time for most, but for some it’s a time of stress and danger. It’s a time when family violence rears its ugly head. Erin Tasker reports.
A
ll the Ashburton Police want for Christmas, is a family violence free day. In fact, they’d love a day of no crime, and no accidents, but chances are fairly high there will be something to keep those working occupied. Around the country, it will be a similar story. Family violence escalates around Christmas. That’s a fact. But Ashburton Police family violence co-ordinator sergeant Jim Sole is urging people to make their plans early, live within their means and communicate in order to have a safe, and hopefully happy, Christmas. In New Zealand, half of all murders are the result of family violence, but Mr Sole said often people did not see the danger signs or realise how serious a situation could be until it was too late. That led to many a tragic, sad story. At Christmas time, the risk elevates. It’s a time when there is pressure on many families both in terms of money, and time. They’re pressures that are growing and changing as time goes on and society and family make-ups become more complicated. “It can be financial, or it can be the challenge of where do we spend Christmas; do we go to your parents, or my parents? And if you have a couple who are in a new relationship but have children to another relationship, you have an even more complicated mix,” Mr Sole said. “One of the biggest challenges for a lot of people who have been brought up in abusive relationships, is that Christmas is actually a time that highlights what they have missed out on, so it becomes an even more sensitive period for them. Sadly, for the vast majority of people Christmas is a happy time, but for a smaller number it’s actually almost the opposite.” News like that of a lower than expected pay out for dairy farmers coming so close to Christmas could put even more stress on some families. But Mr Sole said Christmas wasn’t

all about spending a lot of money, and shouldn’t be, especially if you didn’t have much. “The one thing that your children want most from you is quality time. So make Christmas less about presents and give your time. You’d be better off spending a little less on presents and putting fuel in the tank and taking the kids for a picnic or a trip to the beach,” Mr Sole said. “Think about making this an experience that will mean something to your children later in life. If you haven’t got money to invest, invest your time.” Children are more likely to remember Christmas for a special trip they made with their family, than what was wrapped up for them under the tree. “The marketing side of things is all geared towards this Christmas family
ideal. There’s a large amount of social pressure around that, but for a lot of people that’s not their reality,” he said. “But Christmas doesn’t have to be about huge amounts of food and presents, it’s about spending the time together.” He’s urging honest communication between couples and families; if someone’s feeling the pressure and needs time out, they need to tell someone. “Talking to families who have had violence, that reaching agreement about either party having time out is essential,” Mr Sole said. “But there’s a difference between that and a guy saying I’m going to the pub because that’s what I want to do.” Any adult conversation that did take place, needed to take place in private too. “Adult conversations need to happen
away from children. Please don’t use children as a pawn to get back at a member of the family. “Let’s break the cycle. If Christmas was an unhappy time for you, you need to make an effort to make sure that cycle does not continue. “Have a Christmas that fits within your means, and your budget.” In 2012, more than 100,000 children were present when police attended a family violence incident in New Zealand and research shows that children are affected by violence in the home, even if they’re in another room. Mr Sole said everyone could do something to keep children safe in their families, neighbourhoods and communities, and that needed to happen; children were not able to protect themselves when violence occurred in their own home.
Stalking – someone who stalks another person shows they cannot let them go, or respect their wish to be left alone. Threats to kill – could lead to murder or attempted murder and need to be taken seriously. Strangulation – common in family violence and an attempt to cut off a person’s air supply; it is attempted murder. Jealousy and possessive behaviour – shows domination by one person over another, not love. Fear – the victim or children appear very afraid.

shburton people are crowd-sourcing information to help track down the alleged perpetrators of crime, raising questions as to how far a community can go before it puts justice at risk. In recent months alleged crimes have been self-reported online by people looking for those who did them wrong. They have reported burglaries, stolen cars and theft. They have posted pleas to help identify alleged criminals and sometimes, photographs are posted and sometimes people respond, quickly and publicly, with names. On the face of it, there is something heartening about a community of people helping each other to right the wrongs dealt to people who did not deserve it. The wide web of associations afforded by these pages has the potential to be an incredible tool for good, ensuring many eyes make light work of the sort of investigative work that could keep our very busy police even busier. But no matter how well these things are managed, there are legitimate questions to be considered when people move from reporting crime to investigating it, and from reporting it to the police to reporting it to the community. It was troubling to learn some posts were made instead of reporting incidents to the police and that some people decided for themselves that police should be left to focus on more important crime. As unpalatable as it is to consider, crowd-sourcing while police investigate the same crime could reveal the sort of information police often refuse to release when they are in the middle of an investigation. It might even muddy the water with false leads, incorrect claims or false, defamatory accusations. It might even encourage vigilantism: on the weekend, some people had lessthan-charitable suggestions as to what they would do to an alleged perpetrator. There is every chance that the good outweighs the possible pitfalls and local police are surely alive to the perils and possibilities. Police refused to comment this week, but the popularity and probable success of this community-led activity might be worth being part of.
YOUR VIEW Art gallery It was indeed heartening to read the Editor’s column “Our View” 18/12/14 re the Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre’s volunteers and their thankless task, and yes you are correct our moral has at times hit rock bottom. The art gallery curators and the committee did endeavour to get the building and the processes right over many years on many occasions. With the release of the Morrison Low report I feel vindicated that we tried. We intend as always to keep moving forward making the best of the new public art gallery, a place of learning, a place to be inspired in, a place to be proud of. It is indeed as you state “our mission to safeguard our collective culture and heritage and to enrich the lives of those that live here”. o far, I’ve missed most of the things that form the wind up to Christmas. I can’t say I am sad about that. I missed the Santa Parade, the family musical extravaganza in the domain, for no other reason than I forgot. But I have been doing something for the cause. Last year around this time I stumbled across an American a cappella group named Pentatonix. A cappella, I learned not long before, means voices alone (no instruments either). Listening for the first time I could swear I heard soft subtle percussion instruments. I discovered later that this sound is one of the unique things about Pentatonix. It’s called beat-boxing I’m told, and it has nothing at all in common with singing away to the huge tape decks we used to see glued to the ear of the
cool teens. What I thought of as percussion, was the hissing, huffing, clicking sounds made through the mouth. So, my contribution to Christmas is to send it to all my friends, play it loudly at home, and hope the neighbours don’t call the sound squad on me. I promise I won’t sing though. Okay? What I look forward to though is the presence of the two latest family members. It’s a bit early for them to
be gobsmacked, since they are only a few months old. But in the years to come, the wide-eyed toddlers and the rapturous faces of the older ones on the edge of disbelief in the fat old man and his reindeer will be a joy to behold. In the meantime there will be about four of us in the kitchen, with Mum poking her head in to make sure we know what we are doing. A young friend of mine moved to Australia a while ago. She has a baby just a few

months old. When her Facebook message came, the first thought in my mind, as it always is at this time of the year, is that she would be moaning about the heat. My usual response is “Tough, if Adelaide is too hot, come home”. I was far from right, She wanted to know where she could find homeless people, in order to take gifts to them. She wanted people all the usual agencies had turned away, and she wanted to give the gifts face to face. She got heaps of responses telling her where to find the people she was looking for, and my guess is she will be downtown today, baby and all. “We’ve got so much,” she said. This kid has grown up far from having a silver spoon in her mouth, and I doubt that she’s rolling in it now. But she has a beautiful nature today, just as she did as a tiny child. I doubt she’s even told her Mum what she is up to. No wonder that her family named her Ataahua. In English it means beautiful. And to me, her actions represent the true meaning of Christmas.

What have you done this year? “I t all began two hundred years ago in New Zealand” Do you remember the Christmas song that included the words, another year over what have you done? I am sure many of us can relate to that question as we prepare to celebrate Christmas 2014. We look back and think what have we done with the year, what have we achieved? Two hundred years ago this Christmas Day the Gospel came to New Zealand. The story of the Gospel coming to New Zealand began in 1805 when 17-year-old Ruatara from the Bay of Islands left New Zealand in search of great dreams in England. It didn’t work out for him and as he was returning to this part of the world he meets missionary Rev Samuel Marsden. They keep in contact and eventually Samuel

told Ruatara he would like to come to New Zealand and set up a Missionary Station to help the Maori people learn about God and peace. On Christmas Day 1814 Rev Marsden preached the first Gospel message in New Zealand. He took as his text part of story of the Birth of Jesus from Luke 2 with the verse Behold I bring you glad tidings of great joy. From that we get the beautiful and much loved New Zealand Christmas hymn Te Harinui. So what has been achieved in the last 200 years? What has been achieved in our country, our communities, our families over that time? I think we can look back
with pride when you think of achievements in our country like the establishment of a social welfare system that helps those who need a hand up. But we can’t rest on what has happened in the past. Today some of the greatest things we can do are to develop life giving and enhancing relationships, ensure we are there for each other, that we look out for other by helping each other and doing things for others. This year has not been an easy year for many in our community in many ways, but at our time of greatest need this year the community stood together and ensured those who needed the support received it. This community bought alive the Good Presence and that is what the Gospel is all about, that is the message that Samuel Marsden preached on Christmas Day 200 years ago,

Eight Cairns children dead A far north Queensland community has been left shocked by the deaths of eight children at a Cairns home. Relatives have been gathering outside the property in Murray St, Manoora where police found the bodies about 11.30am yesterday. A woman, believed to be the mother of the children aged between 18 months and 15 years, is in hospital with stab wounds. Local pastor Nicole Dalla Vecchia, 30, joined those at the scene to offer support. “I felt sick when I saw the picture,” she told AAP. “It doesn’t matter if you know them or not, it breaks your heart.” The community was like one big family, Ms Dalla Vecchia said. Local state MP Gavin King said the region had been left in complete and utter shock and disbelief. “I’ve spoken to police and different state agencies and our immediate priority is to provide every support and counselling that friends and family will require,” he said. “We are already discussing in terms of the broader community impact, and what we will need to do as a community to rally together and manage the collective grief. “The scale of the tragedy is incredibly shocking.” A Facebook page - Children of Murray St, Manoora, has been set up and a candlelight vigil is expected to be held at Munro Martin Park at 6pm. Premier Campbell Newman said he was “deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic events in Cairns today”, especially coming just before Christmas. “I ask that all Queenslanders reach out to those who may

I haven’t been in the scene and nobody has been in that scene other than our forensic people,” he said. “They will remain until they’ve completed their investigations and examinations. “After that time, investigators will go in and start their investigative process from there.” Det Insp Asnicar said they could not yet say when the eight children, aged between 18 months and 15 year, died. He said the investigation would be extensive, involving intelligence, forensic and child trauma specialists. “This is certainly a tragic and traumatic, event, so many people deceased in one place. A Perth laboratory is still trying to work out how cyanide got into a kiwifruit served at a mine site in WA’s Pilbara region. Roulston heads world-class field Ashburton cyclist Hayden Roulston has confirmed he will defend his national men’s road race title next month. The Trek Factory Racing professional will be chasing a slice of history at the elite road national championships in Christchurch in January when he attempts to record his fifth title around the testing terrain of the Cashmere hills on January 11. A win would bring him equal with veteran Gordon McCauley with five wins each, the most of any rider since the championship began 80 years ago. Roulston will face a plethora of potential challengers from fellow international professionals and Commonwealth Games medallists. There’s a gleam to the women’s competition with the outstanding Linda Villumsen, a five-time world championship and Commonwealth Games gold medallist, heading a select group that includes the country’s best track riders who will be in preparation mode for February’s world championships – including Lauren Ellis. Missing will be the defending champion and recently married, Rushlee Buchanan but the women’s field includes 2013 winner Courteney Lowe (Tauranga), Jaime Nielsen and Georgia Williams. Roulston, currently in training with his professional team in Europe, will return home next week for Christmas before turning his attentions to the national championships around a course he knows well.
There are a number of leading professional cyclists chasing race honours. They will include Roulston’s Trek Racing team-mate Jesse Sergent, and fellow World Tour riders Sam Bewley and George Bennett as well as Glasgow
Commonwealth gold medallist Shane Archbold. The time trials for all divisions are on January 9 at Lincoln, with the women’s 120km road the next day and men’s elite race over 184kms on the Sunday.

More to come, promises Johnson Golden Boot winner Shaun Johnson describes winning the prestigious award as a “massive honour” but predicts the best is yet to come in his league career. The 24-year-old Kiwis and Warriors halfback was satisfied with his level of performance throughout New Zealand’s victorious Four Nations campaign but says he has a long way to go before he matches that at NRL level. “It speaks for itself. It’s a massive honour. “Growing up I always heard about the Golden Boot and looking at the list of players that have won it before me makes it pretty special,” Johnson said. “[But] it would suck to think
that the best has come. I’ve accomplished nothing with the Warriors yet. “We’ve missed out on the eight the last three years so there’s still a lot of work to be done there. I certainly think the best is yet to come.” Johnson gained almost twice as many votes as second-placed England back rower Sam Burgess to join a star-studded list of former Golden Boot winners, among them three exKiwi captains in Warriors great Stacey Jones (2002),
Hugh McGahan (1987) and Benji Marshall (2010). He was man of the match in the Kiwis’ 22-18 Four Nations final victory over the Kangaroos in Wellington last month. He played in all four matches in the Kiwis’ unbeaten campaign which began with a 3012 win against Australia, followed by a 14-12 win against Toa Samoa and a 16-14 victory over England. Despite the recognition, Johnson feels he is still some way from being considered on
par with the award’s previous winners and among the game’s greats. “It’s hard. As a player I still feel as though I have a bit to go before I can really feel like I can settle in with the group of players that have won it,” he said. “You can never think that you’re the complete player or have arrived anywhere so there’s still a lot of things I want to accomplish.” However, having achieved group success with the Kiwis and being recognised as an individual, Johnson admits he will start the 2015 season brimming with confidence, but past experiences ensure he is not taking anything for granted. - NZH

Dave McCrea has taken over coaching the Ashburton College 1st XV. The team had an informal get together this week, introducing McCrea as the new head coach in the first step towards the 2015 Crusader Secondary Schools’ competition.
McCrea had the season off this year following six season at the helm with the Celtic seniors, but standing on the sidelines was harder than he thought it would be. “It’s hard to watch when you are not involved,” McCrea said. “I had always wanted to coach the school’s 1st XV and the opportunity came up.”
The former prop, who played 112 games for Mid Canterbury, will take the forward pack with Dave McLeod to handle the backs, while Mid Canterbury Heartland trainer, Simon Puckett, will assist during the preseason. The team won’t formally get together until the end of January and with the Crusaders
competition not kicking off until the end of April, McCrea will have plenty of time to mould the team together. McCrea will pick up a squad that maintains a “good nucleus” of players involved this year where they missed the top eight, finishing ninth, and bowed out in the bowl semifinals.
In French rugby, different rules apply. Dan Carter got a taste of what life will be like at Racing Metro when he played five matches for Perpignan in 2009 before a ruptured achilles brought his sabbatical to a painful end, but if he were in any doubt as to the stark contrast between the game in New Zealand and France, he need only turn his attention to the recent controversies swirling around Toulon’s Martin Castrogiovanni and Delon Armitage. Castrogiovanni, who clearly possesses a tremendously short fuse, was fined $20,000 and banned for four matches for an expletiveladen rant against Leicester coach Richard Cockerill after Toulon’s European Champions’ Cup defeat. Armitage was handed a 12-week suspension for allegedly using offensive language towards spectators at the same match. One thing he has become atuned to are high expectations, but former All Blacks halfback Justin Marshall and loose forward Scott Robertson believe the anticipation around Carter, who will be 33 when he joins Racing Metro next December, will go to a new level. - NZME

Tim Perry is poised for a long stint on the sidelines and will miss the start of the 2015 Super rugby season. The Crusaders prop limped from the field in the first quarter of Tasman’s 26-6 win over sixtime defending champions Canterbury in the ITM Cup semifinal in Nelson in October. After battling a series of foot and calf injuries during the season it was his achilles that finally gave way and kept him out of the final - which Taranaki won 36-32 - requiring surgery. Perry had a calcaneal spur removed and his ruptured achilles tendon wired back together. “The aim is to be back by April. “It’s quite a long period but
they have said it will feel a lot better than it is. You just have to be patient and let it heal properly.” The Super 15 kicks off in February but that is two months too soon for Perry, who is still in the early days of his recovery. “It’s a bit cruisy at the moment as I can’t do too much just yet. “I can walk pretty normally but still can’t run or use the leg swimming. I’ve only just started biking and doing as much body weights as I can.” While he’s recuperating, the rest of the Crusaders squad minus their All Blacks - are getting put through their paces. “I’d rather be doing it with them but I’m trying to do as much as I can off my feet I guess,” he said. However, at 31 he completed 1000 first-class runs for the year, dominated by his 969 test runs. McCullum fell to legspinner Todd Astle as Otago went on to score 369. Bailey, 32, stepped in to captain Australia after Clarke injured a hamstring in the opening match of the recent ODI series against South Africa. Mid Canterbury’s opening Hawke Cup match was a flop. Mid Canterbury had started the twoday cricket match strongly to have Otago Country in all sorts of trouble at 93/7, however, after lunch the game turned on its head and the hosts nosedived to defeat. The visitors went on to post 227 before they promptly dismissed Mid Canterbury for 80 and then 79 for a batting collapse double dose, and a maximum 12 points in the bag for Otago Country. Mid Canterbury captain Matt Winter is demanding a much better effort with the bat. “That goes without saying. “We certainly need to spend a bit more time in the middle and get some runs on the board.” Their chances of a result could hinge on the toss with the week’s wet weather likely to make for troublesome batting conditions. Winter’s run of winning the coin toss
but losing the game continued, but he would surely like to win the toss again. “The pitch still looks alright so either way I don’t think it will make too much difference. “We just need to get the result.” In terms of the zone standings after collecting the maximum points off Mid Canterbury Otago Country were beaten outright by North Otago last weekend. Otago Country had drawn with defending zone champions Southland first up in a rain shortened match. Southland meets North Otago this weekend, with Mid Canterbury facing both in away matches in the New Year but their focus is getting a result in their favour to get into the equation. There are three changes to the side that lost outright to Otago Country. James Southby comes into the side, and was selected for the Canterbury Under 19s this week, as does James Fitch and Deon Biggs. Mid Canterbury beat South Canterbury by an innings and 18 runs last
summer, with that two-day victory coming after they had reclaimed the Ron Bigger Memorial Trophy in the annual 50-over fixture for the first time in seven seasons. Mid Canterbury defended that trophy last month and will look to back it up this weekend.

Leading from the front BY ROB FORSAITH A record-breaking partnership between Mitchell Johnson and his skipper Steve Smith yesterday has given Australia a first-innings lead of 97 runs in the second Test. Smith scored 133 in his first Test as captain, while Johnson belted 88 off 93 balls and counterattacked India clinically at the Gabba. The pair shared a 148-run stand yesterday, lifting Australia to a total of 505. It is the highest seventh-wicket partnership at the venue in a Test. Smith and Johnson both fell to Ishant Sharma in the 88th over, but Mitchell Starc ensured Australia moved well past the tourists’ first-innings total of 408. Starc (52) fell to the fourth ball after the tea break, which was delayed 30 minutes as the tourists fruitlessly pushed for the final wicket required. Smith’s knock was the best effort by an Australian on captaincy debut since Warwick Armstrong’s 158 in the second innings against England in 1920. Smith, who suffered a minor quad strain last month in a one-dayer, batted in a degree of discomfort and had his left quad strapped during a drinks break. The 25-year-old led the team admirably in the absence of hamstrung Michael Clarke, with Smith’s series

Ishant Sharma, called into the attack after Haddin’s dismissal, copped the initial treatment. Sharma’s two overs cost 25 runs and his spell ended then and there. Johnson swung freely - pulling short balls off his chest and lashing wide deliveries over the slips. Duel in Abu Dhabi BY DAVID LEGGAT During his fine 103 at Abu Dhabi on Thursday, Younis Khan, veteran of 258 ODIs and a thousand battles in an almost 15-year career, had to scrap for dear life during a wonderful contest with New Zealand’s quickest bowler Adam Milne. He was in for the fifth ball of Pakistan’s chase for 300 and went toe to toe with the express Palmerston North bowler. Younis faced a total of 25 balls from Milne and scored just five singles. It took him 10 balls just to get the first of those runs. Younis scored 98 off 92 deliveries from the other five New Zealand bowlers. Had Ross Taylor not dropped Younis on two, hard and low to his left off the luckless Milne, this vignette within the match would not have taken place. As it was, it proved riveting cricket, the resourceful Younis at times clinging on as Milne turned up the heat. It was his seventh ODI 100 and first for 78 innings. He has had ups and downs with the Pakistan selectors and has just returned to the one-day team. Pakistan feel they need him at No 3 for the World Cup. Thursday’s battle showed why. He can play unusual strokes but his heart and tenacity are strong. In a similar way Milne is making a strong case for World Cup selection, despite ordinary ODI career figures of five wickets from 10 games. The Milne of today is far different from the

Sri Lanka’s run machine In recent years, there’s been Sachin Tendulkar (2009), Ricky Ponting (2010), Jacques Kallis and Graeme Smith (2012) and Kevin Pietersen (2013). All have made a tour to New Zealand with the sun setting on their careers and given an opportunity for crowds to see among the modern greats play test cricket one final time - although in Pietersen’s case no one knew how quickly his star would fall in the England squad. This time it’s Kumar Sangakkara who is unlikely to be seen on these shores again after the World Cup. Fit to sit with that company? Too right. Just look at the numbers. The great lefthander sits fifth on all-time test runmakers, an absolute champion batsman, who arrived in New Zealand yesterday in masterful touch. This year he’s made 1431 test runs at 79.5, including a maiden triple century, another double ton, two single centuries and eight half centuries in 19 innings. Throw in 1256 ODI runs this year, a record, and you get a sense of the run machine he has been for his country. In the just-concluded seven-game ODI series with England, Sangakkara ran up 2, 67 not out, 63, 86, 91, 112 and 33 - 454 runs at 75. That time is coming up for Sangakkara - who made the Sri Lankan side in 2000 when a 22-year-old - is not in doubt. His great friend, and fellow Sri Lankan bulwark, Mahela Jayawardene has retired from test cricket and the World Cup will be the swansong for one of the true batting artists. Off the field, among his many credits was receiving a standing ovation at the end of his Cowdrey Lecture on the Spirit of Cricket at Lord’s this year. During that speech, he recalled the terrorist attack on Sri Lanka’s team bus in Lahore in 2009, when he was struck by a bullet, and which led to the abandoning of international cricket in Pakistan. “Tharanga Paranavithana, on his debut tour, is also next to me. He stands up, bullets flying all around him, shouting ‘I have been hit’ as he holds his blood-soaked chest. “I see him and I think: ‘Oh my God, you were out first ball, run out the next innings and now you have been shot. Dunn aiming to build on premiership lead By Mathew toogood Dwayne Dunn gets another opportunity to build on a premiership lead in Melbourne during a busy period. Ahead of racing at Flemington today, Dunn had a one-win lead over Damien Oliver in the jockey standings. With Oliver suspended until after Boxing Day, Dunn has a
huge chance to capitalise. When Dunn rode Magnapal to victory at Sandown last month he held a four-win advantage over Oliver who whittled it back, while Craig Williams sits third in the standings less than halfway through the season. “It would be nice to put it on the CV,” Dunn said of the Melbourne premiership. “It’s not something I’m going
to really concentrate that much on until we probably get later in the season. Looking at fixed interest markets, ‘lower for longer’ would be a good summation of where things are at and likely to be for a while. Despite improving United States growth, longterm interest rates continue to hover around their 12 month lows. Subdued global inflation has helped, but surplus European savings being redirected internationally also acted to cap the potential for longer-term rates to rise. With European growth expected to remain weak, these capital flows are likely to continue to suppress the potential for any significant change in global interest rates. Local shorter-term rates also appear to have minimal upside, with a softer stance by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and the market now pricing in no increases before late 2015. For fixed interest investors we have had very little in the way of new issuance in the final stages of 2014. However several new bank fixed interest issues are anticipated in early 2015 and interested investors should express any demand early. Have a Merry Christmas and an enjoyable holiday season.

Amongst developed economies, the United States remains the poster child for economic growth. Europe continues to struggle to reignite any substantial growth, not helped by Russian sanctions. Elsewhere, Japan has resorted to an even larger quantitative easing programme (in GDP terms) than that adopted by the United States, to restart its economy. The combined effect of this mixed global growth has enabled global inflation to remain in check and kept interest rates low. The global economy is expected to receive a substantial boost from lower oil prices, with the falls to date having delivered a windfall to consumers in excess of US$1 trillion. With developed economies being large energy importers, this should have a positive flow-on effect and help increase economic activity, led by the United States.

Sky Television has delayed the launch of its NEON subscription video on demand service because of “technical glitches” The internet TV service had been tipped to start in early or mid December, though Sky had never announced a date. Chief executive John Fellet said the full launch had to be set back and he hoped it would be in late January, though no date has been set yet. “These sort of technical issues always turn up at launch time – it happened with the early days of MySky. You cannot launch till all the glitches have been cleared,” Fellet said.

Y SEED CANTERBUR Canterbury Seed Company is a successful and well respected seed production marketing and trading company recognised for experience in the fields of pea, forage, cereal and vegetable seed. Canterbury Seed’s large array of seed products are marketed domestically and to over forty countries around the world. Due to purchase and installation of cleaning and treating machinery, we are recruiting for three new roles at Canterbury Seed Company. We are looking for motivated individuals who are willing to do what is required to get results.
Seed Store Foreman
Reporting to the Operations Manager, and leading a small but enthusiastic team you will drive the onsite cleaning, treating, packing and dispatch of both local and international seed. A sound knowledge of seed cleaning machinery both cleaning and treating and the ability to setup accurately, strong leadership, excellent communication are the qualities required for the above position. To be successful you need to be motivated and willing to work to strict deadlines. An understanding of the seed industry would be an advantage.
Seed Cleaner Assistant
Reporting to the Seed Store Foreman: This position will operate a small Westrup cleaning plant at our Range Street facility. While employed to operate the cleaning plant, the role will be quite broad with flexibility to adapt a key. Previous experience in the operation of seed cleaning is preferred.
Seed Treater Assistant Reporting to the Store Foreman: This position will operate the latest technology treating machine at our Range Street facility. You will be treating seed for local and export customers. Previous experience is essential in this role along with attention to detail and accuracy with figures. Again flexibility to adapt is a key. To be successful in the above roles you will need: • A good level of physical fitness as there will be some lifting required. • A current forklift licence • Good communication skills • Be a team player and willingly participate with others to achieve common goals • Have a good understanding of the local grain and seed industry
Part Time Lab Technician Also based at our Range Street facility, you need the ability to work under pressure and within a small team environment. Knowledge of the seed industry would be an advantage however not essential as full training will be provided.
