This week’s storms caused pain for some, but the rain has saved the day for many Mid Canterbury arable farmers. “The rain has been magnificent. It’s fantastic, a really valuable rain for both livestock farmers and cropping farmers alike and probably saved the day for quite a few crops – all be it it’s a shame it arrived in the form of hail for some peo-

ple earlier in the week,” Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers grain and seed spokesperson David Clark said. Areas along the foothills were lashed by a 15-minute storm on Monday night, with hailstones the size of golf balls wiping out a number of high-value crops and smashing windows in the Mayfield district. “Those particular farmers – the handful that were badly affected – their costs will run into

the hundreds of thousands of dollars in some cases. It’s really tough for them – it’s bittersweet really,” Mr Clark said. “We get a magnificent rain across the district but some people get wiped out with hail. I know how those people will be feeling, I’ve been through it myself.” Mr Clark said while a crop may have a value of $200,000, it could have cost the farmer $180,000 by the time it’s har-

vested. “Arable farming is a very, very high cost structure business, we don’t just go out and wave our magic wand and have a standing crop of wheat or a standing crop of carrot seed,” he said. MetService meteorologist Dan Corbett said another front was due over the weekend,

which was welcome news to farmers – especially those still waiting for irrigator repairs following the September gales. “A couple more days of wet weather and the thought of not having to shift irrigators on Christmas Day would be something to look forward too,” Mr Clark said.

Half-tonne Santa A Houston hotel has created a half-tonne dark chocolate sculpture of Santa Claus in a chair, complete with elves. Pastry experts at the Hilton Americas used a special chocolate dough to fashion the exhibit. It used £3000 ($A5586) worth of chocolate containing more than 10 million kilojoules and took 400 hours to create. – PA

Druids protest at Stonehenge Dozens of Druids have attended a protest outside the new £27 million ($A50 million) visitor centre at Stonehenge on the day of its opening. Protesters travelled from as far as Holland and Scotland to call for English Heritage to rebury remains on display at the Wiltshire monument’s new exhibition. The group, dressed in flowing robes, held signs calling for tourists to boycott the popular site, banged on drums and sang songs about their ancestors. Their protest was seen by hundreds of tourists who filed into the much-anticipated new facilities from packed coaches and cars. – PA

Keep hold of your keys Fire chiefs in the UK have warned against a repeat of last year’s increase in emergency calls from people locked out of their houses after losing their keys during festive celebrations. Such calls have cost taxpayers nearly £10 million ($A18.62 million) over the past four years in London alone, according to the capital’s brigade, which has attended more than 28,000 such call-outs since 2009. Firefighters in London attended almost 7000 “locked out” calls in 2012/13, slightly up on the previous year, and officers fear the number could rise again. The brigade said it had dealt in recent years with calls from people locked in toilets, offices, carparks, shops, and even in cemeteries. – PA

Ashburton is one step closer to getting a family health centre in the hospital grounds. The Canterbury District Health Board has called for expressions of interest from parties who want to build and operate out of an Integrated Family Health Centre on the hospital grounds. The call was made at a health board meeting in Christchurch

on Thursday. The idea was first mooted earlier this year when the $8.7 million rebuild started at Ashburton Hospital. The area of land where the current two-storey brick outpatients building stands would be left vacant when the rebuild project was completed and it was tagged as a possible family health centre site. A proposal released by the CDHB earlier in the year, said surplus hospital land and possibly buildings could be leased

to a private developer for the family health centre. More than 80 per cent of the people who made submissions on the proposal in August believed it would improve accessibility to a wide range of health services. It was envisioned the centre would be used by several general practitioners as well as a range of support health services. Building the centre in the hospital grounds created opportunities to enhance integration

between general practice and hospital based services. The need for change in the primary health care delivery in Ashburton was driven by several factors, including an ageing population, ageing work force and a difficulty attracting GPs to the district. It was planned that general practice and pharmacy would be the centre’s core business with other services added as the community required. The most commonly sup-

ported services were general practice, community pharmacy, laboratory services, primary mental health services and community nursing. It would support after-hours care. The site proposed will become available once the hospital’s outpatients’ block and its theatre site were demolished. They will be replaced by a new theatre suite and procedure room, but a large area of land fronting Elizabeth Street will be unused.

Corrupt former Christchurch police officer Gordon Stanley Meyer has avoided a jail sentence on charges of bribery and indecent assault. In the High Court at Christchurch yesterday, Justice Graham Panckhurst sentenced Meyer to nine months home detention, and ordered him to pay three thousand dollars to each of his two victims in reparation for emotional harm. Meyer admitted telling a suspected drink driver that her charges would go away if she performed oral sex on him. He also pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting an 18-yearold woman he groped while giving her a lift between pubs while on duty in his marked patrol car. Justice Panckhurst gave Meyer credit for his guilty pleas, which came just two days before his scheduled trial, and his exemplary police record prior to his offending. Meyer made no comment as he left the court. The 45-year-old had earlier resigned from the police. - APNZ

Nature has unleashed a second storm on Mid Canterbury in less than a week. While the impact of Wednesday evening’s thunderstorm paled in comparison to Monday night’s event, which decimated crops and smashed windows in the Mayfield region, many people closer to the coast felt the brunt. Tinwald resident Colleen Pinfold said she and her sister took shelter in a shed when the storm front hit, bringing down a bluegum tree on top of a Hilux truck. The tree was one of about 150 damaged by gale-force winds in September.

“We are still cleaning up from that,” Mrs Pinfold said. “We hadn’t got to that tree, because there were others that needed attention more urgently. “My sister was going to make a run for the house, right at the time the tree came down – it would probably have landed on her if she had.” Using a tractor with forks on the front, Giles Pinfold was able to lift the branches off the truck, while his nervous wife reversed it out. Apart from a broken mirror and roof rack, and a few minor dents on the roof and bonnet it emerged unscathed. The wind also ripped several panes from the couple’s commercial glasshouses, blowing them some distance.

A person is dead after being struck by a vehicle in rural Canterbury yesterday afternoon. Emergency services were notified about the incident on Carrs Rd in Loburn, north of Rangiora, at 3.39pm, a Fire Service spokesman said. A large commercial cannabis cultivation operation – including a hydroponic grow room – has been uncovered at a Westport house. Police executed a search warrant at a residential address on Tuesday, finding a sophisticated commercial cannabis growing operation, along with about 2.5kg of dried cannabis head roughly valued at $44,000 and a hydroponic grow room with about 1000 seedlings. Twentyseven mature plants in various stages of growth was discovered concealed in a shed at the rear of the property. Police also recovered about $14,000 in cash. Two people aged in their 50s were arrested and will appear in the Westport District Court in January. - APNZ

Body recovered Police divers have recovered the body of a missing 13-yearold Whakatane boy from the Whakatane River. He has been named by police as Lance Tikitere Fitzgerald. The boy went missing on Wednesday around 6pm as he was playing with friends around the base of the Whakatane Bridge. He was standing on a concrete step and was seen to fall backwards approximately 1m into the water and didn’t resurface. Police divers found his body around 12.40pm yesterday under a pylon. As he was pulled from the water his father started calling his name and had to be held back from the water. Other family members were wailing. - APNZ

Thieves targeting farm motorbikes BY ERIN TASKER

Police are urging farmers to be vigilant as a spate of farm bike thefts continues to be an unwanted headache for the rural community leading into Christmas. Ashburton Police intelligence officer Mark Prendergast said the theft of a motorbike from a rural Staveley property at the weekend was the sixth in recent weeks.

“We’ve had quite a marked increase in the last few months so that’s a cause for concern,” Mr Prendergast said. “The farming community should be concerned too that they are running a higher risk than usual of having their bikes taken.” There was no one area of concern, with thefts reported across the district – including Barrhill, Westerfield, Carew, Lowcliffe, Staveley, Pendarves and most recently Staveley.

“There’s no evidence to suggest they are linked, but previous experience with these types of thefts tells us that the people stealing them have already established a means or a route through which they’re disposed of.” Put simply, they could be stealing to order, Mr Prendergast said. That meant the items didn’t often stay in offenders’ hands long either, before being moved on, which made them difficult

crimes to solve. Farmers are being urged to keep an eye out for any suspicious behaviour and to report it to the police immediately. “We’re asking the farming community to be a little bit more careful with their expensive equipment, not just quad bikes, all sorts of machinery and tools they do their business with. We do want to remind them to be more careful with how and where they store it, not leave their keys the ignition,

Farmers could also record engine numbers of their bikes and take photos of them to help identify them if they’re taken. Fire restrictions are likely to be in place in Mid Canterbury by Christmas Day, Ashburton’s principal rural fire officer Don Geddes says. Mr Geddes said rain and storms this week had not been enough to alleviate the fire risk around the district. “It’s hard because we got a good rain on Monday, and before that we thought we would definitely be declaring,” he said. “But I think we still will. We’ve had a little bit of rain but it’s pretty variable. Some parts only received around 15mm.” If fire restrictions were not in place by the Christmas

break, it would be a couple of weeks before they could be put in place, and a lot could change in a couple of weeks, Mr Geddes said. The countryside had already dried out to a level which had fire danger indicator boards around the district sitting at moderate level, and every couple of days volunteer firefighters were being called to put out fires. Mr Geddes said people were burning tree rubbish left over from the spring windstorms and too many were being caught out by wind changes which sent embers into areas they shouldn’t be. On Wednesday evening firefighters were called to a scrub

fire at a Lowcliffe property when the storm hit, and earlier in the day firefighters attended a fire at a Cherstey property which had spread to 30 metres of trees and an area of around 100 metres by 100 metres of grass. “What that’s telling us is the fires when they do start, they are running,” Mr Geddes said. And that was worrying. Once fire restrictions were in place, permits would be required for fires – although there are some exemptions and care should always be taken when lighting any fire. “If they are still going to (burn tree rubbish) they still need to be mindful of the conditions,” Mr Geddes said.

Initial investigation ‘significantly flawed’ BY KURT BAYER A senior police officer has acknowledged significant flaws in the way the death of Black Widow victim Phil Nisbet was first investigated. Police initially ruled the 47-year-old’s death in 2009 was a suicide. A homicide probe - which ultimately led to his wife Helen Milner being found guilty of murder yesterday was launched only after a coroner raised concerns. Yesterday afternoon Canterbury Police district investigations manager Detective Inspector Tom Fitzgerald confirmed that the first investigation was badly flawed. “It wasn’t treated as a homicide. Unfortunately, that was the mistake that was made,” he said. “Therefore all those parts of an investigation which we would expect, with interviews, exhibit handling and everything that goes with that to a standard

I would expect, weren’t conducted. “It was treated as an unexplained death and it wasn’t given the normal investigation we would expect of a homicide investigation. That’s where it starts and stops really. Because of that, the investigation wasn’t done as it should have.” Mr Fitzgerald expressed concern that senior officers did not

listen to worries raised by the first two officers on the scene, who had suspicions over how things were playing out. They thought Milner’s hysterical actions amounted to “acting” and found it too “convenient” that she switched on her cellphone in front of them to receive a supposed suicide text from Mr Nisbet. “There were a number of

points that were not done correctly.” An internal investigation was carried out and the Independent Police Conduct Authority was brought in. The IPCA did not take things further, but the first officers in charge of the investigation detectives Richard Prosser and Scott Anderson - have been “counselled over their treatment” of the initial inquiry, Mr Fitzgerald confirmed. A spokeswoman for the IPCA confirmed a complaint was received in August this year relating to “an allegation of an inadequate police investigation”. “Because police had already investigated the substance of the complaint and had effectively upheld it, and taken disciplinary action against the officers involved, the IPCA referred the matter back to police to engage with the complainant to resolve the matter,” the IPCA said today. - APNZ

Murderer framed son BY KURT BAYER The son of Black Widow murderer Helen Milner, is suing her for $60,000 after she framed him for a crime he never committed. Adam Kearns, 18, spent 18 days in jail, set up by his other who sent herself violent death threat texts and pretended they came from him. Mr Kearns was arrested, denied bail, and spent 18 days in jail for a crime he didn’t do. Milner was jailed in August last year for two years and eight months for perverting the course of justice in framing her son. Mr Kearns’ lawyer Kerry Cook confirmed he is seeking $60,000 in damages from Milner. Mr Cook said his client is suing over a “malicious prosecution ... that she knew to be false”. A letter of demand was served on Milner during her High Court murder trial, he said. - APNZ

Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Neil Simons says he is undecided on another tilt at the leading role. Mr Simons’ two-year term is set to come to an end in March, when the district’s principals decide on who will next chair the organisation at their annual general meeting in March. The Longbeach School principal said he was still yet to clarify if he was able to run again, and if given the green light, he was unsure if he would put his hat in the ring once again. “I’m undecided at the moment, and I don’t know it may be someone else’s time to take on the role.” The president of the association is responsible for chairing regular meetings, speaking on behalf of principals to media about issues in the sector and

taking a lead in local education initiatives. The meetings often host education experts, and plans are already in the pipeline to hear from an Education Review Office official next year to discuss what reviewers were looking for during visits. Mr Simons said he had so far relished the opportunity to head the association. “I like how the group brings everyone together to collectively improve education in Mid Canterbury,” he said. “We have worked hard to be a lot more collaborative, and improve collegiality. And I really do think that is happening and we’re making a difference,” he said. Mr Simons said nominations were likely to be accepted in March, and if there was more than one, the district’s 23 principals would vote on the president.

Ninety turn out to search for Santas Sophia Clifford, 5, uses her torch to search for Santas during the Ashburton Museum’s annual Santa hunt on Wednesday evening. The Santa hunt has been running for about four years and sees the lights turned out and kids search the museum using torches to ﬁnd some of Santa’s little helpers, who are hiding. Will battle lost By Morgan TaiT An intellectually disabled teenager has lost a Supreme Court battle for a share in his stepfather’s $2.2 million estate because he was unborn when his mother married. Alyxe Wood-Luxford was 4 years old when his mother, Wendy Luxford, 35, and stepfather John Luxford, 73, were killed in a three-car crash near Taupo in April 2000. Car drives into side of passing truck The main street through Tinwald was closed for a time last night after a crash between a car and a truck. It’s believed the crash occurred when a car pulled out of the Grahams Road intersection and collided with the side of a truck on Archibald Street shortly before 6.30pm. The driver of the car was treated by St John Ambulance staff but was not believed to have been seriously injured, although his car sustained substantial damage. Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade deputy chief fire officer Graeme Baker said the road was closed for about an hour following the crash, with traffic diverted down Grahams Road, McMurdo Street and Agnes Street. “When you hear it’s a car versus a truck you think the worst, but fortunately on this occasion it wasn’t too major,” Mr Baker said. New alcohol laws around who’s drunk and who’s not has sparked debate among Ashburton patrons. Some industry insiders say it is a tough task to identify drunken patrons, while others claim they have been kicked out by over-zealous bar staff, with fears could it could become more common as tighter laws take hold. The Guardian’s Facebook page received an overwhelming response yesterday when members were asked if they had been refused service in a bar on the suggestion they were intoxicated when they were actually sober. It comes on the back of tighter alcohol laws introduced on Wednesday, including new guidelines for bars to judge if a patron is intoxicated. If they display two behaviours including affected appearance, impaired behaviour, impaired co-

ordination and slurred speech they can be refused service. One person commented, saying she had been turned away just because she tripped on a step on her way into the bar, while another was denied at an Ashburton bar even though she was the sober driver and eight months’ pregnant. One experienced bartender said it was “sometimes a difficult situation” when deciding to refuse service, because everyone

handles alcohol differently. “Everyone handles levels of intoxication differently so when you yourself think you are sober you could very well in fact be showing obvious signs of intoxication on the outside,” she said. “It’s a fine line that often needs to be crossed and service denied before you reach intoxication. The new rules will put this to the ultimate test.” If a bar is caught serving in-

The Ashburton Zone Committee has two new faces. Medical laboratory scientist Jackie Wright and Chris Allen, who operates an irrigated sheep and beef farm, will join the committee next year. Rangitata Diversion Race chief executive Ben Curry put his name back in the hat and was reappointed to the committee. Canterbury Water Management Strategy programme manager Christina Robb said the selection process focused on finding people who can see others’ points of view and who can work collaboratively to find solutions for water issues. “The strategy is an innovative approach to managing fresh water. It’s about finding the best ways to restore our environment and provide for viable farming and communities throughout the region.” The Canterbury Water Zone Committee refreshment process requires community members from six of the 10 zone committees to put their names forward to be refreshed each year.

The remaining four have already had recent community membership changes. This means community membership terms are staggered to ensure there is an opportunity for new perspectives on the water management committees. Over the past year the Ashburton Zone Committee has been focused on working with the community to develop catchment specific rules to feed in to Environment Canterbury’s proposed Land and Water Regional Plan (LWRP). The committee has specifically been working on developing recommendations on nutrient limits, minimum flows, good management practice, biodiversity, and cultural values for the Hinds Plains catchment. The recommendations for the Hinds catchment – which are expected to be ready by March next year – will guide the drafting of specific rules for the Hinds Plains catchment. The other community members on the Ashburton committee are Greg Roadley, Gordon Guthrie, Sheryl Stivens, and Donna Field. Matthew Hall did not put his name forward for re-selection.

It took almost a year to grow and less than five minutes to remove as Ashburton cable layer Alastair Miller got his hair shaved off yesterday by hairdresser Kylee Hurst for Child Cancer. In the small gathering was two year old Liberty Morgan, a child cancer survivor who at four months of age had a tumour removed. She relapsed at one year old when two more tumours were removed. Now clear, Liberty has six monthly check-ups. She is friends with Mr Miller’s grand-

son, Kaleb. Mr Miller estimated he has raised more than $400. But the tally was still to be finalised. It had been 11 months since his last haircut but Mr Miller wanted to support families going through the emotional and financial hardship of cancer. His support was also in remembrance of his sister, Irene, who died of leukaemia 22 years ago, aged 37. “There’s quite few people I know with cancer ... it’s a horrible disease.” “It’s incredible what they go through ...they don’t want it, they don’t ask for it, what people go through it’s hard for (other) people to understand it.”

A move by the Wellington City Council to pay all of its staff a ‘living wage” has councils around New Zealand rushing for their calculators. The Ashburton District Council has yet to discuss the issue, but it has been signalled by one councillor as something that should be looked at when the council looks at its budget for next year. The Timaru District Council has already made its decision – it does not plan to up the wages of approximately 20 full time staff who currently earn

Cut-price felines The Auckland SPCA has cut the cost of adopting cats and kittens by half over the Christmas period, saying the organisation is at “crisis point” with too many felines arriving on the doorstep. The cost of adopting a kitten up to six months old has dropped from $160 to $80 and the cost of an adult cat up to seven years old has dropped from $105 to $52.50. The deal applies from today and runs until January 12, said SPCA Auckland chief executive Christine Kalin. “We’re at crisis point with 543 cats and kittens ready for adoption right now - and more arriving every day. Just yesterday we had more than 100 extra animals come into our care - in one day. “Cats are arriving faster than we can find new homes for them. We simply cannot accommodate any more. It’s our job to rescue animals but right now we have nowhere to put them. So we’re appealing to the public for their urgent help and cutting the price of cat and kitten adoption in half. “If you’ve been considering getting a pet, please take advantage of this great deal, help the lost, abandoned, and abused animals of Auckland by adopting a cat or kitten from the SPCA, and give them the gift of a secure home for life this Christmas.” She said it was a “really sweet deal” for potential pet owners because the animals have been checked by a veterinarian, desexed, micro-chipped, wormed, treated for fleas, and given initial vaccinations. The SPCA was also desperate for people to foster cats or kittens over the Christmas holidays when regular carers were on holiday. - APNZ

Ashburton District Council manager for people and capability Sarah Mosley estimated the cost of increasing the wages of the seven full-time staff currently paid less than $18.40 an hour, would be about $14,000. The council currently foots a wage bill of $8.544 million for its 130 staff, 15 of whom are paid less than the living wage. Eight of these are part timers. The definition of what is a living wage, however, varies according to individual circum-

stances, Ms Mosley said. “It is easy to conclude that “employee X earns under $18.40 therefore is below the living wage”, however this is incorrect. The living wage was calculated on the basis of the necessary income for a twoadult, two-child family and is based on both adults working, one full-time and one parttime.” A living wage has been defined as the minimum amount needed to provide the basic needs for a family. The council reviews employee remuneration on an annual basis, taking into account the

market value for each position. Adopting a living wage policy was a decision for councillors and they had not yet considered the arguments for and against, she said. In addition to its payroll for 130 people, the council also pays contractors, council agencies, students and reserve board members. In its long term community plan, the council has already signalled its budget will include a rate rise of 7.4 per cent. This year rates rose by 5.1 per cent, down on the 7.4 per cent signalled in the long term plan.

Dead woman named A “very hard-working and very popular” Hunterville wool handler, Keryn Swainson, who plunged to her death in the Turakina River, will be sorely missed, her boss says. Miss Swainson, 20, died when her car plummeted about 20m into the river off Turakina Valley Rd, near Otairi Station, Hunterville, on Tuesday night. She had finished work for the day, had been home and was “out and about” visiting friends in the district, said Shane Ratima, owner of Ratima Shearing. Miss Swainson had worked on and off for the company for four years. “She was very experienced, a level 3 wool handler, and had worked down the South Island over winter. “We are all in total shock - our heartfelt condolences go out to her family.” - APNZ

The number of overstayers in New Zealand is the lowest it’s been since the turn of the century, according to a new Immigration New Zealand report. The report found there were now 13,151 overstayers living in New Zealand, down 893 from last year and 33 per cent lower than the 2005 estimate of nearly 20,000. “At the same time, removal and deportation costs have nearly halved from $3.00 million in 2005/06 to $1.53 million in 2012/13, which represents significant savings for the taxpayer,” Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse said. - APNZ

Forestry fatality The new work safety regulator says it has real concerns about the forestry sector after a 20-year-old Levin man was killed by a falling tree yesterday - the 10th forestry fatality this year. Lincoln Kidd had been felling trees on a commercial forestry block off State Highway 1 near Oturoa Rd, between Levin and Foxton, when the incident happened about 6.45am. His colleagues immediately notified emergency services and gave him first aid, but he died at the scene. WorkSafe NZ said it was investigating the death. - APNZ

Praise for the CDHB Coen Lammers EDITOR

he Canterbury District Health Board has to be congratulated on reducing the waiting times for surgery patients. The Guardian over the past year has been critical of the health board over a host of issues, so we want to be just as quick to praise this same organisation for achieving noticeable results for reducing surgery waiting times. Having Baron Gordon’s story on the front page of yesterday’s Guardian is the happy, human face of this policy after the Ashburton man had to wait 13 months for a hip replacement. Staff at the district health board is almost entirely made up by dedicated, wonderful professionals who have given their lives to help others and often for limited financial rewards. Waiting lists, however, are the reality of an underfunded public health system that is expected to perform increasingly sophisticated procedures for a growing, ageing population on restricted budgets. As long as Kiwis remain allergic to higher taxes to pay for better health and education, those needing free surgery have to put up with the limited availability for surgery. Saying that, the performance of the CDHB had even slipped behind its own expectations of reasonable waiting times and earlier this year the board identified this as a key priority for improvement. Since then the hospitals have managed to whittle September’s list of 2940 patients, who were set to be helped before January 1, down to 514. It is also getting close to having all of its 14 surgical services reduce their waiting times from 180 days to 150 days. Some sceptics will be slightly suspicious about these statistics. Several Government ministries have a track record of polishing up their numbers by changing recording procedures instead of actually improving the actual performance. Still, Mr Gordon does not care and is the living proof that the CDHB has made significant strides over the past three months and has given many Cantabrians a wonderful Christmas present.

This means that if a school bus stops outside Burger King and Caltex, as one did on Wednesday morning, traffic going in both directions on the main road must slow down to 20km/h. The woman, driving the grey Honda Odyssey, who began frantically beeping, making rude gestures, swearing and attempting to ram into the person in front of them, who slowed down, is apparently unaware of this, and they were not even on the other side of the road; they were going directly past the bus, which had a large, red, il-

luminated sign on the back, informing drivers they needed to slow down to 20. It is frightening that when a bus stops on the main road drivers have to either risk a large fine from our local revenue collectors or slow down and risk being rear-ended or abused by oblivious maniacs. Drew Deer

Council process It, to me, is pleasing that many more persons are, in your column, expressing their displeasure at the direction the council has clearly indicated it intends to follow. As more and more truths come out this number will increase. The financial position has been presented in a way that

even those publically approving would in no way conduct their own personal finances. For the stadium project to have adjustments made at this stage is an appalling reflection on all parties and begs the question of the integrity of the process. Then of course there was the treatment of Mr Urquhart. There was little in the way of facts reported yet behind the scenes the inference of an application of threatened pressure is foremost. It is an atmosphere of distrust, of sides being taken with the root cause undisclosed. The current level of distrust and displeasure in the council and in the community indicates a very short tenure for them and well before the term is established I feel there will be a

call for the Central Government to step in. The Government will step in because with the election looming it will be an ideal way to claim concern for the community. It would not solve all problems, but it may put a brake on some of the expenditure planned, yet not detailed but I think promised in quarters as yet unknown and of a magnitude that will force some people to quit this district. guess it’s time to start thinking about our New Year’s resolutions. Does anyone actually still make these? How many who actually do make them, end up sticking to them. I do know families who sit down and map out their goals for the upcoming year together, so I guess that’s along the same lines. I have always been told when it comes to goal setting you must write them down. But before we get to that, let’s have a look at the origin of the New Year’s resolution. The ancient Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts. In the Medieval era, the knights took the “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season each year to re-affirm their commitment to chivalry. So how many resolutions are successful? A 2007 study by Richard Wiseman from the University of Bristol involving 3000 people showed that 88 per cent of those who set New Year resolutions fail, despite the fact that 52 per cent of the study’s participants were confident of success at the beginning. Men achieved their goal 22 per cent more often when they engaged in goal setting (a system where small measurable goals are being set; such as, a pound a week, instead of saying “lose weight”), while women succeeded 10 per cent more when they made their goals public and got support from their friends. According to Frank Ra, author of the New Year’s resolution book A Course in Happiness: “Resolutions are more sustainable when shared. Peer-support makes a difference in success rate with New Year’s resolutions.” So I guess if a bloke was to write his resolutions in the local paper and, with the support

Trial ‘used to attack Lawson’ The trial of two sisters charged with defrauding multimillionaire Charles Saatchi and his ex-wife Nigella Lawson is drawing to a close with the jury to be sent out to consider their verdict yesterday. In their closing arguments, lawyers for the defence accused Saatchi of using the trial of his two former personal assistants to attack his ex-wife Lawson. Francesca Grillo, 35, and her sister Elisabetta, 41, are alleged to have spent STG685,000 ($A1.28 million) on credit cards belonging to the TV cook and her art dealer ex-husband, who were divorced in July. Anthony Metzer QC, defence counsel for Elisabetta, said she had been caught up in the “crossfire” between the former couple. He asked the jury at Isleworth Crown Court, west London: “Could it be Mr Saatchi was using this as a way to attack Ms Lawson by proxy? “By turning on one of her most trusted and loved people?” The sisters have told the court they saw evidence that Lawson used drugs on a regular basis. In her evidence to the court, Lawson said she was not a regular drug user. Metzer asked if that was “credible”, given the addictive nature of drugs. He said there was evidence that the drug use was a “guilty secret” that had been kept from Saatchi and it was a “central plank” of the defence case. This is because Lawson was meant to take responsibility for spending on the credit cards and had failed to do so, or had given authorisation while under the influence of drugs, the court

heard. Karina Arden, defending Francesca, told the jury they must set aside their personal feelings about the celebrity chef and not be influenced by Prime Minister David Cameron’s “illtimed” comment in support of Lawson. Arden repeated Lawson’s evidence of admitting drug use, and said the jury must consider her credibility as a witness against the Grillos. She said it was “inconceivable” that Lawson would not have known about Francesca’s foreign trips, or that the defendant could have “got away with it” if she hadn’t already been authorised to use the company card by her employer, because of the way the account was monitored. Referring to the Grillos’ former employers, Arden said: “Both of these people, Ms Lawson and Mr Saatchi, had their own agendas when they came to court to give evidence.” Earlier, prosecutor Jane Carpenter, making her closing speech, stressed that the jury had to remember the sisters were the ones facing charges. “It might have seemed at times that other people were on trial,” she told them, saying that she was referring to Saatchi and Lawson. She described it as “utter nonsense” that the celebrity pair would authorise the Grillos’ alleged level of personal expenditure. The judge advised the jury to decide on the extent of the drug taking, bearing in mind what Lawson and others had said about it. - PA

The charismatic owner of a wellknown dumpling restaurant chain has been shot dead in the ancient Japanese city of Kyoto, a hotbed of the country’s yakuza mobsters, local media reported. Takayuki Ohigashi, 72, was found bleeding and unconscious in a parking lot in front of the company’s headquarters in Kyoto at about 7am, the Sankei Shimbun newspaper said yesterday. He was bleeding from at least three wounds, suggesting he had been shot multiple times, reports said. - AFP

A professional punter who was in a gambling ring with NSW police officers says he had to bet under other people’s names because bookmakers knew he was smarter than them. The NSW Police Integrity Commission is investigating the involvement of Detective Senior Constable Anthony Paul Williams and Senior Constable Marc James Smith in an online gaming syndicate. Professional gambler Darren Azzopardi said he used accounts registered in other people’s names - known as “bowlers” - because bookmakers were worried he’d outsmart them. Betting through bowlers meant he could enjoy the same odds as “rank and file” punters and wouldn’t be penalised for his skills, he said. - AAP

Aspirin temper cure? Inflammation has been linked to uncontrollable temper, raising the prospect of treating anger with common drugs such as aspirin. Markers of systemic inflammation, caused by an amplified immune response, are associated with a psychiatric condition called “intermittent explosive disorder”, or IED, say scientists. In layman’s language, IED can be translated as having a very short fuse. Sufferers are impulsive, hostile, and prone to recurrent aggressive outbursts of anger. Road rage is said to be a vivid example of the symptoms.- PA

Record grain harvest West Australian growers have delivered the biggest grain harvest in the history of the state. The CBH Group, the grain growers’ cooperative that handles, markets and processes grain from WA’s wheatbelt, said the yield surpassed the previous record of 15.06 million tonnes, achieved in 2011/12. More than 50 sites broke their daily records and the CBH network also received a record number of tonnes in one day - with more than 500,000 tonnes flowing in on November 27. - AAP

Shares in Lyttelton Port Co closed at a record high since the South Island’s biggest port listed in mid-1996 after the company reached a settlement with its three insurers for a $438.3 million payout plus GST. The shares jumped 34 per cent to $3.24 after the port reached a settlement with Vero, NZI and QBE in what will be one of the biggest insurance payouts the country’s ever seen. The parties agreed on a gross amount of $450 million minus deductions of $11.7 million, and the port will be paid the

outstanding $382.7 million plus GST by the end of February, it said in a statement. Before the deal was reached, the port had been paid $55.6 million by its insurers. “That’s a much bigger number (than thought) and reflective of what the stock’s done today,” said James Lindsay, portfolio manager at Tyndall Investment Management. The settlement covers claims under the port’s material damage, business interruption and contract works policies. Protecting people online The UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution aimed at protecting the right to privacy against unlawful surveillance in the digital age yesterday in the most vocal global criticism of US eavesdropping. Germany and Brazil introduced the resolution following a series of reports of US surveillance, interception, and data collection abroad including on Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff and German Chancellor Angela Merkel that surprised and angered friends and allies. The resolution “affirms that the same rights that people have offline must also be protected online, including the right to privacy.” It calls on the 193 UN member states “to respect and protect the right to privacy, including in the context of digital communication,” to take measures to end violations of those rights, and to prevent such violations including by ensuring that national legislation complies with international human rights law. It also calls on all countries “to review their procedures, practices and legislation regarding the surveillance of communications, their interception and collection of personal data, including mass surveillance, interception and collec-

In front of the Akanui Estate woolshed Jo Wilson sent this little gem in of Akanui Estate workers around the 1920s. Edward Grigg owned the Eiffleton property at this time. Jo knows that Charlie Samuels is in the back row at left and Barney Kenny is fourth from left and believes they were all probably blade shearers. Do you know who any of

these men are? Jo would love to know. The men are posing in front of a blue woolshed, which is still standing today. The families known to be living in the Eiffleton district around the 1920s were: Stoddarts, Sheehans, Gormans, Taylors, Ferris’, Davidsons, Wilkies, Houstons, Reads,

Mansons, Nelsons, Roches, Thomas’, Parsons and Prendergasts. Interestingly Jo’s grandmother, Elizabeth-Ann Samuels, was an amateur photographer and took and developed this photo. Mrs Samuels won many awards for her photography at the time.

Ryder back in black Jesse Ryder is back in the New Zealand ODI team for their fivegame series against the West Indies starting at Eden Park on Boxing Day. Ryder has been absent from the national team for two years, during which time he was badly assaulted outside a Christchurch bar and suffered a sixmonth ban for a positive drug test. The draw for the National sevens tournament was released yesterday and Mid Canterbury coach Mark Cousins didn’t expect anything less than a tough run in Rotorua. The draw for the January 11-12 tournament at the new venue, the Rotorua International Stadium, has the Hammers up against North Harbour, then Taranaki and a clash with Canterbury late on day one before heading into the playoffs on Sunday. “It is probably the same as any

■ CHRISTMAS AT THE ASHBURTON RACES

Sun to shine on ‘tent city’ BY GREG JONES The concept of Christmas functions and parties happening at the races is well established now, and in fact continues to grow. Club secretary Gareth Murfitt reports that an extra five groups have taken sites this year with extras also accommodated in a larger marquee, and all available space in front of the old stand is being utilised with a version of tent city for this afternoon. The Christmas meeting has been an enjoyable event for hundreds on the day, and with fine weather forecast for today all the on-course attractions will proceed with many enjoying the opportunity to participate. The regular pie-eating competition, undie run over 80m, and woolpack race all carry prizes and participants and onlookers alike can look forward to some fun. Racing starts at 12.35 and the eight race programme concludes at 4.40, with a live band operating throughout the day. A total of 108 horses are entered with locals involved in many of the races. This number is up on previous years and may be the result of an initiative of the club and key sponsor Ritchie McCrea Painters combining to provide a trainers’ cash prize for the day to encourage them to start more horses at the meeting. The track is in excellent order thanks to staff and committeemen. Greg Jones goes through the fields: Jan Hay should start with a winner in race 1 with Vaporetto looking a likely prospect. A massive performance at Riccarton on the last day of the Cup meeting was followed by another useful effort after being caught extremely wide last time. A good draw and home course advantage makes it look one of the best bets of the day.

Mufhasa retired Ten-time Group One winner and twotime New Zealand Horse of the Year Mufhasa has been retired. The veteran son of Pentire pulled up lame following a track gallop earlier this week and suffered sesamoid damage that has ended his stellar career. Bred by Rich Hill Stud’s John and Colin Thompson, Mufhasa was purchased out of their Select Sale draft to Karaka in 2006 for $50,000 by David Archer. Prepared by Stephen McKee and more latterly by Bruce Wallace, Mufhasa earned more than $3.6 million. - APNZ

Dr Dee Bee is no stranger to the winning post at Ashburton, and may re-inforce that notion in race 7 today. Dunroamin finally found winning form last time and the step up in distance should provide no issues. Tilly, Champagne Katy, Mister Spiderman and Evancho look the best possibilities to fill the other places. Voodoo the track -5 from 7, and distance- 4 from 6, specialist has all the credentials to carry on in race 2. The 3kg allowance is an obvious aid as well. Trainer Mike McCann has a great record here recently and could easily produce the quinella with Bursting Stone a chance in an even field. Of the others, Confederate and Whistling Straits make most appeal. The Champion/Murphy stable have a nice type in Coup Caprio and with the experience from Cromwell under the belt look for the chestnut to figure in the finish. Harper Rose will need to use all the undoubted speed it possesses to get handy from the draw and can dispute the finish with some luck Southern Power has shown up at the trials as has Cinderella. Dhaulagiri has had five previous seconds and always gives a good sight. Double Blue was a little disappointing last time despite being checked but the previous efforts in good fields indicate the ability is there to win one at short notice. Why Wait has not heeded the name in breaking maidens but seems more solid this time in while

Zhanim, a Savabeel filly should appreciate the 1600m and has looked promising. Southern Pride and Ballaleah are other definite chances in a tough field. Another even field contests the rating 65 1400m. Prince Ransom has often appeared a lot better than this class and the last effort suggested he is ready to deliver. Keynote finished very strongly at Wingatui and showed class last year more than once in age group racing. The local McKay stable have a live chance with Mary Burke running two fine seconds after a spell. Sorley Boy, a previous course winner, Da Best Coup and Sand’ior also have claims and could win without it being a surprise. Kaapfleur showed potential at the trials before racing and this was reflected with a top second at Riccarton recently. A good draw adds to the positives and the mare will be hardest to beat in this field. Lady Privateer has been trying for a while but in provincial class is always a possibility. Private Lincoln has not lived up to its breeding yet but the firm track is a key to a better performance. Crystal Fox’s best run was when it ran handy and this draw suits that possibility while Ellure has had support from some knowledgeable punters in the last two starts with no reward although it suffered serious interference last time.

The feature of the day has drawn an eight horse field with the top weight Arietta poised to make it three straight after drawing the coveted ace position. Likely to get a trail behind Dr Dee Bee which should prove difficult to get past, Arietta has built up a commendable race record with a stakes victory already accomplished. Go Go Dingo has been if fine form this season with the only failure in the Group 2 Couplands Mile which is a different league to this. Expect a big run. Irish bay has also been consistent since a break and could be in the money again from the minimum weight. Champion trainer Michael Pitman holds the key to the last with three horses entered and any of them could win. No Emotion is versatile and has winning distance form while Fragrant has beaten better fields than this. Each has an apprentice claim. Vanilla the other representative went well enough at Riccarton to consider and has won here previously. Cherie Trembath has Lamaze going really well and it has been placed each time it has run in this rating band recently. Annabel Rose will be improved with recent racing and could be best of the rest. Best Bet : Vaporetto (Race 1) Best Longshot (Santa’s Stocking Filler): Reachforthestars (Race 4)

Windies in fightback BY ANDREW ALDERSON The largest West Indies partnership of the series earned the visitors credibility on the opening day of the final test against New Zealand. Denesh Ramdin and Shiv Chanderpaul put their collective 209 tests (Ramdin 56, Chanderpaul 153) to good use with a 200-run partnership for the sixth wicket to help the West Indies to 289 for six at stumps. Ramdin was caught behind for 107, his fourth test century, with less than
