The news just keeps getting better for Ashburton College with its rebuild project receiving both a size and a cash boost.

In March Prime Minister Jacinda Adern announced at the college that there would be a complete, $50 million rebuild of the 50-year-old school. That

build has now been upped to include extra classrooms and a likely increase in spend of up to $60 million.

College principal Ross Preece said the change came after an error in the number of classrooms in the original documents was spotted.

The school has 62 classrooms, a roll of 1200 and is at 100 per cent occupancy.

The new build had just 64 classrooms.

When the rebuild was announced, the plan was to build support space – reception areas, library etc – for a maximum roll of 1600, however, with that proposal the devil was definitely in the detail, Preece said.

Elation, frustration in ideal conditions

Wall to wall powder enticed skiers and snowboarders to Mt Hutt in what was the busiest day of the season so far on Sunday.

The ski area had to stop cars at the base of the access road as early as 9.30am as all of its carparks filled up, disappointing carloads of skiers and snowboarders eager to make the most of the fantastic conditions after a 30-centimetre snowfall on Saturday.

Among skiers cursing themselves that they did not get up early enough was Richard Wood of Ashburton and his wife and two young children.

He said often they went up for a half day, but when they arrived about midday a staff member met them at the base of the access road to inform them of the bad news.

Cars were being let through on a one-down one-up basis, but with there being about 60 cars already waiting at the information booth further up the road, it was unlikely they would be among the lucky ones.

They took it on the chin, realising that they had just got there too late in this case.

“It was an absolutely primo day, we needed to get up earlier,” Wood said.

“Full credit to the Mt Hutt team, they do an absolute amazing job in every aspect, primarily health and safety, they know what they are doing.”

Some commenting on the ski area’s Facebook page complained about waiting for up to more than an hour

for a shuttle once they got to the lower carparks, prompting the ski area to respond to one that it would be looking at its systems to improve service.

Manager James McKenzie told the Guardian that generally once or twice a season it will occur that the road has to be closed to uphill traffic and skiers will be disappointed at missing out.

“It’s always going to be on a bluebird day, after new snow, and a weekend.

There are days when demand outstrips supply,” McKenzie said.

“It was tough for people (who missed out on Sunday), there’s definitely frustration.”

The ski area shuttles skiers in buses from its lower carparks, and on Sunday used nine shuttles driven by its own staff as well as staff from Methven Travel.

“We threw everything we could at it,” McKenzie said.

Ski conditions have seen a dramatic turnaround since the school holidays, when snow cover was thin. There has been almost two metres of snow in the last six weeks, and for the first time since 2017 all terrain opened on Sunday, including the Rakaia Saddle chutes and the bluffs above the access road.

After the ski area was closed on Saturday as the snowstorm hit, de-icing of lifts started at 2am on Sunday, avalanche control work was undertaken and the quad opened at 9am, the Summit Six 9.30am and the triple just before 10am. More than 3000 skiers visited on the day.

Summer singing school now in session y

If you’re on your way past the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this week, keep an ear out for the hard-working vocal chords of 149 Mid Canterbury Summer Singing School (MCSSS) students.

The group launched into a week of practice yesterday before they bring a musical theatre production to the stage on Friday and Saturday.

It’s the biggest production yet for the MCSSS, which has been operating each January for 18 years and is musically helmed

by Ashburton singing tutor Jo Castelow.

“We now have people from all over, from as far as Timaru and Christchurch, and each time brings a new mix of voices,” said Castelow.

Some singers have been involved in the week-long course for more than 10 years, she said,

Building standards placards set to roll out

A number of older buildings around the Ashburton District will shortly be sporting signs that spell out how they rank against new building standards.

As part of the on-going drive to ensure all buildings will be earthquake safe, the Ashburton District Council will be sending signs to owners of buildings built prior to 1976 and will be asking them to display those signs prominently on the outside of their property.

The public notification is part of the council’s drive to ensure every older building has been inspected by engineers and that where required, strengthen-

ing work is either carried out or planned in the future.

It’s been a long process getting to this point, council building services manager Michael Wong said, but the placard templates had now arrived and these would be sent to property owners over the next month.

The placards would serve a two fold purpose – making the public aware of a building’s compliance level and encouraging owners to carry out necessary strengthening work.

Wong anticipates there will be about 150 sent out in February to owners of non-compliant buildings.

“These are the building’s we’ve

already assessed. Then we’ll do another desk top review and pick up the ones we may have missed and we’ll work with them,” he said.

Buildings that have not been assessed will be given the lowest rating until an assessment is done, Wong said.

There had been a proposal to change the rules so the cut-off date for engineering assessment would have moved forward to cover all buildings built before 2004 and that would have seen hundreds of buildings around the district bearing stickers, he said.

The consultation process ensured there was no date change

and that dramatically reduced the number of buildings coming into the net locally.

If a building is required to have THE a placard displayed it will contain information on the percentage it complies with building standards and the year with which it will need to be strengthened to come up to code, Wong said.

Older buildings that have been assessed and found to be up to strength or that have already been strengthened will not need to display placards.

Details on the placard-bearing buildings will be held on a public register with the Ministry of Building and this is accessible to anyone.

Te Araroa walkers are on the rise, benefiting the summer tourism industry in Methven.

Many who do the 3000-kilometre trail, which runs the length of New Zealand, end up in the ski town, as it is a natural resting point near the uncrossable Rakaia River.

Methven i-SITE consultant Lyndsay Agnew said December to February was peak season for trail walkers, and she was assisting about half a dozen per week.

“Most of them are doing the whole trail or the whole South Island, depending on how much time they have got,” she said.

“They are really interesting people, you have to be a certain breed to want to go and walk 3000 kilometres.”

They mostly came from Europe and North America, and walked north to south, hitch-hiking into Methven from above Lake Coleridge. They generally stayed in the campground or backpacker lodges in Methven.

“It’s nice to have them here and they spread the word when they go back,” she said.

Walkers rejoin the trail on Blackford Road in the Rakaia Gorge, and Methven Travel provides transport on the “empty” section of its school bus run, and operates an on-demand shuttle service in school holidays.

The Te Araroa section through Mid Canterbury goes from here to the Hakatere Heron Road, taking a public access easement over Glenariffe Station, then crossing the 60,000-hectare Hakatere Conservation Park.

Among those undertaking Te Araroa is American Clayton Beckett. His trail name is Chef, he has a travel blog at chefspecial5.com and is from Connecticut.

He flew to Queenstown and shuttled to the southern end of Te Araroa at Bluff, and walked 555 kilometres north to Twizel over the next fortnight, staying in high country huts and his tent. With last week’s storm system forecast he decided to skip the next section and he

hitchhiked to Methven, and left at the weekend aiming to hitch to north of Lake Coleridge to resume the trail.

Beckett said the trail to date had had many river crossings, and some mountainous terrain, as well as farm tracks and dirt roads.

Besides the road walks, which he did not like as they lacked the wilderness appeal of true trail walking, and a lack of markers in some areas, he was enjoying the scenery and meeting lots of people.

Of the few fellow hikers he had met, most were walking north to

south. “A lot of Kiwis don’t even know about the trail,” Beckett said.

He was not worried about being without a cellphone.

“If you don’t have service it’s not going to help you and you are not going to get that in the mountains,” he said.

He was confident enough from previous trail walking in Chile and America not to worry about an emergency locator beacon.

In the 12 months to July last year, 550 people walked the full length from Cape Reinga to Bluff,

compared to 350 in 201 and 210 the year before.

Illegal dumping cases take off Ashburton District residents are being encouraged to continue reporting illegal rubbish dumped in the community when they see it, after the Ashburton District Council responded to a number of incidents throughout July.

A total of 35 cases were reported to the council last month.

Service delivery group manager Neil McCann said ​it is disappointing to see rubbish deliberately discarded in public areas.

“Aside from being an unpleasant job to clean up, the cost of clearing dumped rubbish falls back on ratepayers, which is a unfair burden – especially as most of the community do the right thing,” he said.

“The council investigates these matters to try and identify the culprits, so if you see illegal dumping, please report it to us by using the free snap, send, solve app.”

Illegally dumping rubbish can result in the persons responsible having to pay for the clean up and/or being fined.​ When responding to last month’s illegal activities, McCann said council staff discovered that most of the dumped items could have been recycled or reused – options that cost nothing.

Metal items, including most electrical products such as fridges, toasters and washing machines can be dropped off for free at the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park.

Toys and furniture that are in reasonable condition can be dropped off at the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park Reuse Shop.

Additionally, up to 40kgs of waste can be taken to the district’s Resource Recovery Parks for $6.00, an amount McCann added ​is far smaller than the $418.00 fine plus clean up fees that being caught illegally dumping can incur.

Scratchie burglar convicted and discharged A man who broke into a Christchurch dairy and scratched $57 worth of instant scratchie tickets was convicted of burglary when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Cody Stuart Te Poono was also convicted of dishonestly taking a vehicle, which was later found undamaged.

Judge Joanna Maze said Te Poono had a background of mental health problems and she convicted and discharged him on both charges. He must pay reparation of $57 to the dairy owners.

Te Poono took a car in May this year when the owner had left the keys in the ignition while using a nearby ATM machine. The vehicle

was found later, undamaged.

The burglary occurred in November last year when Te Poono saw a broken window at the dairy and entered the store. He unrolled and scratched some instant scratchie tickets but was stopped by the owner; he then left the dairy.

Te Poono is subject to a compulsory treatment order for his men-

tal health. Judge Maze said she accepted Te Poono was living on a benefit which barely covered his needs; she gave him two months to pay the reparation and said it was not appropriate he pay reparation for the broken window.

Police said the scratchie tickets included 21 $2 tickets and three $5 tickets.

Classroom space for 1350 students would be built initially, but the plan includes provision for an extra block as the roll grows, Preece said.

Preliminary work on the rebuild has started, with interest registered from 12 architectural firms, both on and off-shore.

Site visits by some of those had already begun. He anticipates the architect will be appointed by the end of September.

Staff and board members had been working on an education brief wishlist of ideas for the new school and there would be consultation with students and the community, he said.

While it was unclear when site work would begin, the ministry had set the latest date for completion at December 2025.

Whether the new school is built in stages or not depends on location. If it was sited on the rugby fields and Middle Road netball courts then it could be completed before the old school was demolished, Preece said.

“When it comes to how a and where, we’ll be guided by the experts,” he said.

New Ashburton JPs sworn in Ashburton’s JP numbers grew by two yesterday when Mayor Donna Favel and Carew dairy farmer Kirsty Shearer were sworn into the role.

Friends and family of the two new Justices of the Peace were at the Ashburton District Court yesterday for the swearing in ceremony, which was performed

by Judge Joanna Maze.

JPs are a big help to New Zealand’s justice system and can witness documents being signed, certify copies of documents and administer an affidavit or complete a declaration.

Some also receive extra training to be judicial JPs, sitting in courts like Ashburton’s to deal with minor crimes. Their services are free.

Favel was born in Christchurch, spent her early years in Timaru and moved to Tinwald as a child for her formative years. She spent 13 years abroad and married her husband David in 1999, shortly after they took over management of the Regent Cinema.

She became a district councillor in 2010 and was elected the district’s first female mayor in 2016.

In brief Car destroyed by fire A pile of scrap was all that was left once firefighters made their way to a vehicle fire in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The Hinds Voluntary Rural Fire Force were called to a car fire on Coldstream Road at about 2.30am yesterday morning. Chief fire officer Dave Kingsbury said the fire was well developed by the time fire crews arrived. “It had been going for some time by the time we had arrived,” he said. “There was virtually nothing left, it was absolutely destroyed.” Kingsbury said the vehicle had been on the side of the road for several days. A police spokesperson confirmed that they were notified of the fire, and that there was nobody injured or in the vehicle.

Seminar raises macular degeneration awareness Ophthalmologist Dr Ainsley Morris shares the latest information on treatments and management of macular degeneration. Macular Degeneration New Zealand held a seminar in Ashburton on Saturday, and it was well attended with about 170 people turning up. The organisation is wanting to raise awareness of the chronic eye disease to prevent a potential epidemic of blindness. It affects one in seven people over 50 years of age in some way, and by 2030, one in four people will be over 65 years of age.

More details can be published about a man charged with murdering a 2-year-old girl after his trial started yesterday in the High Court at Auckland.

Aaron Archer, 30, is charged with murdering the girl at Mangawhai almost a year ago.

Until yesterday the child’s name and her relationship to Archer could not be reported. The child was Ariah Dawn Roberts. Archer was Ariah’s mother’s boyfriend at the time of the alleged murder.

Ariah’s mother’s name has been suppressed. The trial is expected to take about two weeks. - NZME

Escapes from fires A family of four have escaped a house fire in Dunedin overnight on Sunday, while another person escaped a house fire in Edgecumbe. Emergency crews were called to a property on Richardson St, in Dunedin’s St Kilda, about 2.30am. Authorities said a mother and three children escaped without injuries. However, Fire and Emergency New Zealand said the house was extensively damaged and had left the family with nothing but the pyjamas they were wearing. About an hour later a person also escaped a house fire in Edgecumbe. The fire service was called about 3.40am to reports of a Kowhai Ave house on fire with a person still inside, The house was well ablaze when firefighters arrived but the person had escaped.

Economic report now available A detailed economic report of how the Ashburton District performed in the year to March 2018 is now freely available for businesses and residents.

The Infometrics 2018 Economic Profile shows reliable economic indicators for the district including data on employment, business and population growth, the economy, productivity, and workforce and skills.

Local businesses and organisations can access this data to help inform their business strategies.

The profile reports that from the year to March 2018, the district’s economy grew two per cent from the year before, to $1.952 billion, while the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased 3.2 per cent

over the same period.

Infometrics is a national company that compiles data from a range of sources including Inland Revenue Department, Statistics New Zealand and Paymark.

The council has purchased the right to this information to benefit the local community.

Gag over ‘racism’ allegations NZME The exclusive, male-only Nelson Club has refused to vote on an amendment to its laws that would ban “hate speech” in its premises while passing a rule that gags members from speaking out.

The move comes in the wake of alleged racist and homophobic slurs by a member which resulted in the resignation of its former chairperson.

The club held a special general meeting on Friday to decide the fate of a member who is alleged to have made anti Muslim and homophobic comments at an event late last year. The incident led to the resignation of the then club chairperson, when the committee refused to censure the member in question.

The member in question stepped down from the club’s committee but at the meeting was permitted to keep his membership while the club voted to make an amendment that would make it forbidden to speak publicly about club business. However, the meeting would not hear an amendment to ban hate speech.

In a press release the club president Scott Dodd said that the meeting was an opportunity to “send a clear message that intolerance and bigotry have no place within the club”. It said it censured the member and stated that the club was “inclusive of all ideologies, races and sexual orientations”.

These beliefs were also recirculated by the club’s lawyer in an email to other members.

The Nelson Club was founded in 1874. The club is notoriously exclusive with prospective members having to be nominated by current members. However, it does not allow females to join and also has a smoking room – both rules have been cited as legally ambiguous.

One member said the meeting was a “choreographed refusal to address the problem of white supremacist, and anti-Muslim

views within the club”.

“I also saw a refusal to ban hate speech within the club’s premises and an acceptance of a rule change to make the club a secret society.”

The member who made the initial comments in question wrote to the club board saying that the comment about Muslims was about sexual grooming gangs in the UK, which was “factually correct” and that he was “anti-Islam” not “anti-Muslim”. He also denied being “strongly homophobic” but did express a strong dislike for “LGBT activists pushing a pro homosexual agenda to young children in our schools”.

He said his decision to move to New Zealand 10 years ago was “hugely based around the spread of Islam in the UK and Europe”.

The man was also a former member of the fascist far-right British National Party while living in the UK. The member said that he hoped that the Nelson Club was an “old school” break from the “over PC norm of the modern world” where people could express themselves freely.

One member said it appeared that in refusing to acknowledge the problem, the club remained as the member in question had described it.

Coroner should have suppressed baby’s name - family NZME The family of a baby who died in Kaitaia two years ago are upset about the publication of the baby’s name in the coroner’s report on her death.

The coroner also included a warning in the report about drinking alcohol while breastfeeding.

The two-month-old girl, who was born prematurely to a Northland family of seven, had a blood-alcohol level six times the

legal driving limit for an adult.

Family spokesperson Teresa Tua said the publication of the baby’s name had hurt her brothers and sisters.

“Those kids read the comments on Facebook, they read about their mother and the coroner’s findings. They were like, ‘they’re saying this stuff about my mum’.

“The kids are at school and they’re getting told ‘your mother’s a murderer’. They ended up having a fight at school over it.”

The children’s grandmother,

who is their caregiver, has also been on the receiving end of abuse about her daughter, Tua said.

The publicity had been devastating for the whanau, and they should have had a chance to ask for name suppression before the coroner’s findings were publicly released she believed.

Coronial staff have apologised for forgetting to notify the baby’s grandmother before the report came out.

They said the report was sent

to the baby’s mother and father at separate addresses, but the father’s letter came back unclaimed.

Tua said the mother did not receive the report.

“They knew the nana was the caregiver, she was the main person in this to be notified and they had her phone number and address - and she wasn’t given a chance to comment.”

The family was looking at their legal options, but could not afford a lawyer, Tua said.

Doctor fails to tell patient about abnormal blood tests NZME A doctor’s clinical records are now being audited after failing to tell a 63-year-old woman that she had abnormal blood results, causing delays to her treatment.

It was not until three months after the results came in that the woman was visiting her daughter in another part of the country and still in pain that she was diagnosed with gallstone pancreatitis by a doctor at a different medical centre.

The woman first went to the doctor in May 2018 complaining of abdominal pain after eat-

ing, weight loss and a loss of appetite, according to a report by the Health and Disability Commissioner released yesterday.

The doctor examined the woman and ordered blood tests. He also prescribed her with medication for indigestion and said he would follow up with her after a month.

But when the results came back and the liver function tests showed anomalies, he failed to contact her.

In the August that year, the woman’s daughter took her to see a doctor at another medical centre when she was visiting her in another region and her

pain was getting worse.

The doctor ordered more blood tests and this time told the woman’s daughter the liver function tests were abnormal due to a likely obstruction in her biliary system.

On the same day they learnt of the results, the woman was in utter agony and vomiting so her family took her to the emergency department where she was diagnosed with gallstone pancreatitis. Nine days later she had a laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

The doctor told the HDC it was standard practice to telephone patients if there were ur-

gent issues, and said he should have this time.

He gave a number of reasons for not calling, including that she was due in for a follow-up appointment three weeks later.

In his findings, Health and Disability Commissioner Anthony Hill found the doctor failed to provide the woman with services of reasonable care and skill by not telling her of the abnormal blood results, and organising an urgent ultrasound.

An audit of the doctor’s clinical records was ordered by the HDC and he was also told to provide a written apology to the woman.

A dentist has been found to have breached the health code after performing a root canal on the wrong tooth.

A report released by Deputy Health and Disability Commissioner Kevin Allan yesterday detailed how a dentist diagnosed a patient’s tooth as needing a root canal – but then did the work on the wrong tooth.

The report stated how the patient presented at a dental service for inflamed gums, pus, and pain between her lower two front teeth.

The dentist diagnosed tooth 41 and gave the woman the options of root canal treatment or extraction. The woman decided to proceed with root canal treatment.

In April last year, the patient went in for the treatment, but when performing the procedure, the dentist performed the root canal treatment on tooth 31 rather than tooth 41.

However, when reviewing the radiographs after the procedure, the dentist realised that he had performed the root canal treatment on the wrong tooth.

He immediately informed the woman of the error, apologised, and advised her that regrettably tooth 41 still required treatment based on the original diagnosis.

Subsequently, the patient was referred to a specialist endodontist and the root canal treatment on the correct tooth was completed.

A internal review was launched by one of the directors of the dental service, which concluded that this was “unacceptable, but could not have been mitigated by the practice and can be attributed solely to human error”.

In the report, Deputy Commissioner Allan considered that by failing to isolate the correct tooth for the root canal treatment, the dentist did not provide services with reasonable care and skill.

However, he noted the dentist took appropriate action after the error was identified.

The report stated the dentist “sincerely regrets the stress and injury he caused”.

“He said that he is now acutely cognisant of the extent of injury and trauma that his errors as a healthcare professional can have, and that this will be a sombre reminder that he will take into the rest of his career.

“He said that he will do his utmost to ensure that he does not make the same error again.”

Allan recommended the dentist provide a written letter of apology to the patient for his breach of the Code, and participate in relevant training.

A patient statement provided in the report said she “acknowledged that mistakes can happen, but felt that this should not have occurred”.

Knife crime – after school NZME Little shocks Martin Griffiths, lead trauma surgeon at the Royal London Hospital, but he recently surveyed the scene on ward 12D, the UK’s first dedicated major trauma unit, and saw the resuscitation bays filled with wounded children.

Half a dozen boys, aged between 12 and 16, had been rushed in from multiple incidents.

All of them had knife injuries. It wasn’t even 6pm.

“It’s chastening,” he says, “when your bays are full of adolescents who have been stabbed, and it’s daytime on a weekday.

“They’re being injured just after school closes.”

Griffiths, 53, couldn’t pause for long.

Whenever a patient is brought to his ward with a knife wound – on average, twice a day – there is a race against the clock to keep them alive.

He is recalling the scene from his 12th-floor office, overlooking the span of north London.

Rolling back and forth on a wheely chair, he explains his plans to fix the capital’s knife crime problem as the NHS’s first clinical director for violence reduction.

A role he was appointed to in June, it could hardly feel more pressing after another week of bloodshed, with three stabbing deaths in London, and another in Newcastle.

“Every person who dies on the end of a blade is a tragedy,” says Griffiths. “We all have a role to play in reducing violence; be it a podiatrist, pharmacist, or paediatrician.”

Knife attacks in England and Wales have hit record highs; 43,516 offences between April 2018 and March 2019.

His role complements the Government’s confirmation yesterday that 18 local areas, from Northumbria to Hampshire, will receive a total of £35 million in funding to set up new violence reduction units, modelled on a programme in Glasgow that halved its murder rate from 2005 to 2017.

Drastic intervention is needed: knife crime in England and Wales has hit a record high, rising 8 per cent to 43,516 offences, between April 2018 and March 2019.

On the front line, Griffiths has watched the number of Royal London patients treated for knife and gun wounds rise 20 per cent, year on year since 2012.

His ex-military colleagues have compared the ward to Camp Bastion, a British Army base in Afghanistan.

“We routinely see people with more than half a dozen stab wounds,” he says.

“We’re hypothesising that it involves multiple assailants

rather than individuals – so we’re moving towards collective violence.”

His patients are also getting younger; they have an average age of 16, but a quarter are even younger.

Recently, he treated a fiveyear-old who had been shot.

Youth violence should be treated as a public health issue, he believes.

“If 600 kids aged 18 and under were being hospitalised every year as a result of their mobile phones exploding,” he has argued, previously, “there would be a huge outcry.”

Jones gets a wake-up call from sponsors NZME Big-name advertisers are turning their backs on shock jock Alan Jones amid widespread condemnation over his “appalling” comments about New Zealand leader Jacinda Ardern.

The controversy began when the 2GB host attacked Ms Ardern on-air after she criticised Australia’s climate change policies.

The 78-year-old unleashed an extraordinary spray in response, labelling the respected leader a “complete clown”.

“She’s a clown, Jacinda Ardern; a complete clown,” Jones said.

“I just wonder whether Scott Morrison is going to be fully briefed to shove a sock down her throat.”

He went on to describe her as “a swallower” of the climate change “hoax” and a “joke”.

“She is a joke, this woman;

an absolute and utter lightweight,” he said on social media.

Within hours, Jones faced an onslaught of criticism from Aussies and international leaders alike.

Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama was one of the first to slam Jones on Twitter.

“The people of the Pacific, forced to abandon their homes due to climate change, don’t have that luxury,” he tweeted.

Former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull also weighed in, posting: “Jones should also apologise to @jacindaardern for his latest misogynistic rant.”

Since then, a slew of companies – including Anytime Fitness, Snooze, Koala and ME Bank – have revealed they are pulling their ads from Jones’ show. In a tweet, Koala mattresses told 2GB it was “time to wake up”.

Shock jock Alan Jones “Climate change is real, violence against women starts with words and the bloke has had too many chances,” Koala wrote in a pointed reference to Jones’s reactionary views.

Yesterday, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg also weighed into the debate, but defended Jones on ABC’s News Breakfast.

When host Michael Rowland asked whether it was time for Jones to be taken off

the airwaves as a result of his “repeated violent language towards women, particularly women in power”, Frydenberg said: “Those comments were clearly inappropriate … but I do want to acknowledge Alan Jones is also a mainstay of our media.”

Frydenberg’s failure to fully condemn Jones angered many viewers.

Jones has previously sparked outrage by suggesting that former prime minister Julia Gillard should be “put into a chaff bag and thrown into the sea’’, and saying her recently-deceased father had “died of shame”.

In 2016, Mark Latham appeared on Jones’ show to criticise anti-violence campaigner Rosie Batty, and in 2017 Jones published a tweet which many interpreted as a joke about the lynching of Sydney mayor Clover Moore.

Katy a copycat?

Katy Perry is facing further allegations of plagiarism after fans of Broods complained her new music video was startlingly similar to the artwork for the Kiwi pop duo’s new album. Perry on Saturday shared a clip of the video for her new single Small Talk on Instagram, which features her singing in front of a turquoise coloured curtain and a pair of lips made out of gold coloured fabric.

But social media commenters were quick to point out how the video is similar to the cover art of Broods’ album Don’t Feed the Pop Monster, which shows the Nelson-born siblings in front of a bright orange backdrop and a red pair of lips.

Now it’s Miley and Kaitlynn Meet the parent. A week after returning home from sailing around Italy, pop star Miley Cyrus and reality TV star Kaitlynn Carter have been snapped having lunch with Cyrus’ Mum Tish in Los Angeles.

Their cosy outing comes just a week after Cyrus and Carter were photographed kissing and cavorting on a boat in Italy, the day after Cyrus announced her split with Liam Hemsworth. It’s a sign things might be getting serious for Cyrus and Carter, despite speculation from some corners that their romance is for show only and won’t last.

Maybe not the green green grass of home I

t’s not a locked and loaded deal, but there’s certainly a bit of smoke starting to emanate from the barrel of the gun that’s pointed directly at the Ashburton Bowling Club.

Last week it was announced that the current location of the bowling club, which has held place in the Ashburton Domain for 120 years, is in the firing line, to be demolished as part of the domain redevelopment plan.

Sure, there’s a lot of water to go under the bridge and bulldozers and diggers aren’t going to arrive tomorrow to find an entire club barricading themselves in the club rooms to stop it happening, but in time it could become a very distinct possibility – perhaps minus the barricading

bowlers, but you never know.

It’s never nice news to hear of such plans, but where the bowling club are most frustrated is through the fact they knew about the potential for it to happen before they were officially told. In fact, you could almost call it Ashburton’s worst-kept secret, the murmurings were that loud.

What will also frustrate the

bowling fraternity and its supporters the most is the decision to move the bowling green, or demolish it from its current state and rebuild somewhere else, does have a sense of illogical nature.

That space in the domain redevelopment has been earmarked as the location for an activity hub and the bowling club be shifted around the corner to the former old camping ground near Grigg Street.

Logic would suggest the easiest option might be to recreate the activity hub in the old camping ground and leave things as they are in and around the central areas of the domain, stretching the reach of the facility much further than it’s ever

been stretched before.

Ultimately the bowling club stays put and the new activity hub is built on new ground.

It’s just never that black and white though, is it.

I’ve been lucky enough to play a bit of bowls on the Ashburton green and it is by far, in terms of views and surroundings, the best green to play on in Mid Canterbury and it would be a shame to see it shifted from there.

While probably not quite the thriving club of a few years ago, the Ashburton club does hold a strong presence in the local bowling scene and there’s a hard working group of people who dedicate a lot of their time to the sport and ensuring that their little patch of paradise at

the domain is kept in pristine condition.

Lessees of the land, they themselves have invested a lot of money into the area developing their own greens and building their own club rooms, so any inkling of relocation or demolition would have to come at a hefty cost.

They also bring people into the domain on a frequent basis.

I’ve been witness to huge groups of people sitting out near the playgrounds, enjoying a break in play and making the most of the walks around the area before returning to the greens to pick up a bowl again.

It would be a shame to potentially lose that. But in some ways, it seems inevitable.

With any organisation you’re involved with, particularly one you help pay for, to extract the value you deserve you need to get involved and ask the hard questions if necessary.

Tough questions can drive better value I

f you don’t question and challenge the status quo, how do you know what you’re getting is the best it can be?

In the last month or so, reports of my comments on the $100 million per year of agriculture levies, and their value to farmers, has drawn feedback from some involved in levy bodies.

Some have said I should know what value there is, as I’m exposed to a lot of contact as an elected Federated Farmers leader. True, but my role is to ask the questions on behalf of members.

Others have said I should keep my questions private.

Many years ago, I used to get defensive about Feds; it’s a natural thing to do, when you are working hard in a volunteer role for farmers.

But now I welcome farmers’ questions on value and what difference we make. It’s awesome they bother to ask. It gives me a chance to point out some aspects of stuff we do that they might not be aware of, and quite likely they’ve got some feedback that will help us do even better.

FROM THE FARM

Like the levy organisations, we have a huge amount of work on the go. We do our best to communicate about our activities, but as farmers we get so much information thrown at us, it’s near impossible to keep up and read it all.

Quite a few levy organisation staff and directors spoke to me on the subject, and like me took it as an opportunity to open up conversations and take on useful feedback. For me, that was the perfect response to my questions on the value of your levies.

Our industry and export prowess have been built on farmers challenging the norm, looking at the problems and creating the solutions.

With farmers feeling under pressure with calving/lambing

under way, and any number of pressing issues and proposed new government regulations, it’s vital our farmers are engaged.

When they’re closely involved, they own the issues/problems and lead the charge to better ways of doing things.

Genuine engagement comes about by questioning things, debating the issues in a constructive way, and getting yourself to meetings and workshops.

The issues cannot be solved by a few staff and industry leaders signing up to stuff.

We all need to provide platforms for farmer engagement.

At Feds, we have district and regional meetings for farmers to attend. We run robust social media where people can have their say.

We email members with advisories and pesky surveys – some would say too often, but it’s hard to find the right balance for everyone. Our valued farmer elected leaders relay ideas, opinions and yes, criticisms, direct from the farms and the rural communities where they have daily interaction.

Also, a lot of our staff are farmers. They live and breathe it too!

Farmer buy-in is crucial. If it doesn’t happen, useful outcomes from any decisions or changes is slow.

The public/stakeholders get disappointed. And it’s vital to leadership. If you’re the general in an army, you want to make sure the soldiers are with you, because if they aren’t, battles get lost very quickly!

My message with any organisation you’re involved with, particularly one you help pay for, is to extract the value you deserve by getting involved and asking the hard questions if necessary.

The more who do, the more effective the organisation will be.

Alliance Group invests $1.2m in Smithfield Alliance Group is investing $1.2 million in its Smithfield plant in Timaru to meet the needs of farmers in the South Island.

The 100 per cent farmer-owned co-operative is installing additional vacuum packaging, co-products processing technology and extending the secondary processing area at the South Canterbury plant, which will boost the processing efficiency by up to 20 per cent.

Alliance chief executive David Surveyor said the investment at Smithfield was another step forward in the company’s transformation strategy and showed the

benefit of a strong balance sheet.

“The major gains at Smithfield will come from the reconfiguration of the secondary processing facility at the plant. This will include additional vacuum capacity and conveyors, which will significantly improve the product flow. These changes will result in greater efficiencies at the plant and benefit farmers.”

The plant employs 500 people at peak season.

Alliance recently appointed Karen Morris as Smithfield plant manager, the co-operative’s second female plant manager and a long-time employee.

Farmers recycle carbon naturally I

’ve noticed that whenever somebody tries to suggest that blaming farmers for the “end of the world” is misguided, there is an avalanche of venom and public backlash.

What I find particularly frustrating about this criticism is the lack of rational and knowledgeable discussion based on the reality of nature – such as the process of taking carbon from the atmosphere to grow vegetation.

It’s called photosynthesis and is the basis of life.

When it comes to the debate about climate change it is an indisputable scientific fact that all vegetation, whether grass, crops or trees, takes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to grow.

This means if you grow a crop that yields 20 tonnes of dry matter (DM), which is the dehydrated plant material, then that crop will have to have taken some 20t of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to make that 20t of DM. Everything from wool to leather, to meat and milk produced on farm from animals eating that vegetation, and grain, seeds and fodder is made up of approximately 50 per cent carbon.

If we are exporting more carbon from our farms (in the form of food, fibre, grain, seeds,

fodder and emissions) than our crops are taking from the atmosphere, then the system would collapse.

Farmers understand photosynthesis because their livelihoods depend on it.

Unfortunately, many people, including politicians, don’t because their livelihood depends on their ability to blame a minority for all the problems of the majority. Hence the venom, the taxes and all the other rubbish farmers are facing.

The politicians justify their position by focusing on the emissions from agriculture (methane, nitrous oxide and carbon diox-

ide) but give no credit for the carbon dioxide that these crops have taken from the atmosphere to generate those emissions in the first place.

Agriculture’s net contribution to climate change is minimal at worst and many farming systems, such as arable and horticulture, will be in credit.

So, when the government, the ICCC, Greenpeace and all the other anti-farming, anti-science, anti-reality folks blame farmers for climate change – and label us as the biggest polluters of the atmosphere – they are, to put it politely, lying.

We are in fact, along with

forestry, the only industries that take carbon from the atmosphere.

And yet our emissions are measured as if they are the same as those from transport, construction and manufacturing; industries that clearly do not take carbon from the atmosphere.

If New Zealand is serious about contributing to stopping climate change then we have to acknowledge this and focus on the real causes of climate change – no matter how unpopular this is with the politicians.

PS If you want to rate integrity of purpose in saving the world in this era of climate change emergencies, look at the uniforms organisations issue their staff. It is notable that many who should know better wear nylon fleecies!

By Guy Trafford There is not a lot left to say over the Fonterra situation except sympathy must be extended to farmers, most of whom would have invested in shares likely at the $6-$7 range and now see them reduced down to $3.53 and barely showing a pulse.

The lack of any dividends (again) is adding more insult to injury, effectively forcing farmers to start to pay for their shares all over again. The next action will be for Fonterra to start to reduce the milk payout to try and build up their capital reserves or reduce more debt.

How deep these cuts go will depend upon how the fire sales go and, given that most of what is on the market has been making some serious losses, it would be a brave investor who would want to fork out into these ventures.

Rubbing salt into current shareholder wounds is the news that Theo Spiering is still receiving bonus payments, taking his total package from the time spent at Fonterra to around $40 million.

Given most of those in the positions that led to the current debacle are now gone, not much is left for those left behind to do apart from lick wounds and get on with the new paradigm.

Ironically recent news was that Fonterra went from being the fifth largest dairy company to now being fourth. Surely that must be worth a bonus to someone? Perhaps the other major companies are having their share of problems.

Fonterra has gone from sixth (2017) to fifth (2018) and now fourth (2019) overtaking Dairy Farmers of America and behind Nestle, Lactalis and Danone.

However, the big movers have come from Asia with Yili and Mengniu both joining the top 10 in the past year and moving up the ranks. Given the current events, it is difficult to see how Fonterra will be able to sustain the fourth position as the other companies appear to be growing via mergers which is a pathway no longer open to Fonterra.

The winter grazing discussion doesn’t appear to have anyone defending the practice as the shots going on to major news channels are pretty damning. Actually, even the environment of some of those who were criticising the practice, and thereby implying they were doing OK, looked marginal at best, with a total lack of shelter for livestock and no provision for riparian runoffs etc.

However, it does look as though in future years the view from the road on to many farms will improve.

One of the things that pushes my buttons is people highlighting practices of others without their own practices being put up for scrutiny. Some practices, as above, can’t be defended and are open for criticism no matter what; especially when animal welfare is at stake. But another recent target by Greenpeace was an international oil drilling company OMV (Austrian).

I’m certainly not going to defend OMV but surely Greenpeace, if they are sincere, are focusing on the wrong target. OMV (just) extract the oil, it is us motorists that use it. Shouldn’t we be the target?

Putting banners across the motorway or on routes to the skifields targeting drivers would be a more sincere approach in my view (even though I would be among the offenders targeted).

Perhaps this is a bit close to their own collective lifestyles?

Most pressure groups seem to have this annoying habit of focusing on convenient targets which often deflect attention away from the general populous which is where the pressure should be targeted.

Until it is, I don’t see meaningful conversations happening. Everybody just makes it somebody else’s problem and don’t seem to be prepared to make sacrifices themselves.

(Heaven forbid when they start to focus on our customers).

Federated Farmers has published the re-

sults of its latest Farmer Confidence survey.

On the back of the Brexit debacle and the China versus US trade war, farmer confidence is falling.

Over 50 per cent of survey respondents are expecting trade conditions to worsen over the next 12 months. This is a dramatic increase compared to the same survey conducted six months ago which had just over 40 per cent respondents answering this way, so a 25 per cent change really reflects a shift in farmers’ mood.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, farmers showing a profit reduced from 46.7 per cent six months ago, down to 44 per cent. Over half of total respondents are dairy farmers and sharemilkers, so dairy fortunes are going to more heavily weigh on the end results.

However, somewhat contradicting the pessimistic outlook, the number of farmers who are predicting a rise in profitability increased by 11.4 per cent from a 4.1 per cent result in the previous survey – although the zero dividend payout from Fonterra may have an impact upon this if taken now.

The one area that held no surprises was around future concerns and 24 per cent are concerned about climate change policy and another 19 per cent are concerned about regulation and compliance costs, arguably two sides of the same coin. Perhaps because of the uncertainty around the future, more farmers are aiming to reduce debt in the coming 12 months.

At least reductions in interest rates should help to allow this to happen. Also in line with the desire to reduce debt, there was an increase in the number of farmers aiming to reduce spending with those who intend to increase spending at 6.3 per cent, down from 18.2 per cent in the last survey.

If farmers can achieve these outcomes rural services and suppliers may also have to tighten their belts to ride out this tough period as one thing farmers don’t like, whether it is from weather, markets or politicians, is uncertainty, and it is coming in spades at the moment.

Markets While not in the same league as last week, lifts in the schedules have continued and helped to maintain the saleyard prices at healthy levels.

Sheep The schedule lifted again on lamb and mutton also had a small lift over the average with prime meats in Southland leading the way. Saleyard prices, while showing a small dip generally, are holding up well with the better quality ewe lambs providing a stronger benchmark for other classes to compete against.

Wool As with Australia, the drop in wool prices has extended to New Zealand.

Generally confined to the finer end of the spectrum in Australia, prices dropped as much as 20 per cent on the back of the news the US tariffs on Chinese goods would extend to apparel wear. The finer wools were reduced up to -8 per cent here and the coarser crossbred wools relatively stable with a -3 per cent fall. Prices for the finer wools on the market matrix look perhaps worse due to a lack of finer grades, in turn due to the 33 per cent passed in.

Cattle Not quite the same lifts in the cattle schedule that lamb had but some small lifts have helped to support the market. With what should be better feeding conditions for animals starting in a month or so the good prices look likely to continue.

Venison No change after the small lifts last week.

Dairy Mostly more negative news with forecasters reducing their Fonterra outlooks for the season’s final farmgate price and in the meantime, dividends have been reduced to zero. The poor outlook has the Fonterra share price at an all-time low.

Terrorists turning to Bitcoin NZME Hamas, the militant Palestinian group, has been designated a terrorist organisation by Western governments and some others and has been locked out of the traditional financial system.

But this year, its military wing has developed an increasingly sophisticated campaign to raise money using Bitcoin.

In the latest version of the website set up by the wing, known as the Qassam Brigades, every visitor is given a unique Bitcoin address where he or she can send the digital currency, a method that makes the donations nearly impossible for law enforcement to track.

The site, which is available in seven languages and features the brigades’ logo, with a green flag and a machine gun, contains a well-produced video that explains how to acquire and send Bitcoin without tipping off authorities.

Terrorists have been slow to join other criminal elements that have been drawn to Bitcoin and have used it for everything from drug

purchases to money laundering.

But in recent months, government authorities and organisations that track terrorist financing have begun to raise alarms about an uptick in the number of Islamist terrorist organisations experimenting with Bitcoin and other digital coins.

The yields from individual campaigns appear to be modest – in the tens of thousands of dollars.

But authorities note that terrorist attacks often require little funding.

And the groups’ use of cryptocurrencies appears to be getting more sophisticated.

“You are going to see more of this,” said Yaya Fanusie, a former analyst with the CIA who now does consulting on rogue actors using cryptocurrencies.

“This is going to be a part of the terrorist financing mix, and it is something that people should pay attention to.”

New Zealand shares snapped a six-day decline yesterday, rising ahead of a flurry of company results this week as investors adjusted their earnings expectations to the benefit of A2 Milk and detriment of Fletcher Building.

The S&P/NZX 50 Index increased 47.12 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 10,702.48.

Within the index, 23 stocks rose, 23 fell, and four were unchanged.

Turnover was $128.3 million.

The domestic corporate earnings season picks up speed this week with blue-chip stocks including Mercury NZ, A2, Fletcher, Spark New Zealand, Air New Zealand and Auckland International Airport scheduled to report.

A2 led the market higher, up 3.4 per cent at $16.23 on a volume of 807,000 shares, ahead of its 90-day average of 716,400. The milk marketing firm is scheduled to report on Wednesday, and Forsyth Barr analysts are predicting a near-60 per cent gain in annual profit.

“People are coming back into the stock on an upgrade from one of the brokers,” said Shane Solly, a portfolio manager at Harbour Asset Management.

“There’s a bit of earnings result tweaking going on.”

Synlait Milk, which supplies A2, rose 0.3 per cent to $9.38. Fonterra Shareholders’ Fund units fell 1.1 per cent to $3.50.

Fletcher, which reports the same day as A2, was the most heavily traded stock on a volume of 4 million shares, well up on its 1.05 million average.

It fell 1.6 per cent to $4.45.

Solly said there were a few brokers who were “pointing at the potential for a little bit of weakness”.

Of other upcoming major results, Mercury declined 0.2 per cent to $4.94, Spark increased 1.5 per cent to $4.04 on a volume of 2.6 million, Air New Zealand rose 1.1 per cent to $2.75 in light trading of 264,000 shares, and Auckland Airport decreased 0.6 per cent to $9.60.

Property For Industry rose 1.7 per cent to $2.335 with 1.2 million shares changing hands, the most since November 7.

The real estate investor reported a 57 per cent increase in first-half profit, underpinned by increased property revaluations.

NZX-listed company earnings have largely met expectations, with firms adopting a cautious outlook against the backdrop of a slowing local economy and lingering uncertainty in global trade.

However, investors responded positively to US President Donald Trump’s comments that he planned to talk to his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, very soon.

Solly said that optimism among investors helped lift global bond yields, which hit record lows last week, and noted that some yield stocks gave up some of their recent gains yesterday.

Chorus fell 1.7 per cent to $5.15, Meridian Energy was down 1.7 per cent at $4.67 and Vital Healthcare Property Trust slipped 1.5 per cent to $2.58.

Kiwi Property Trust rose 0.6 per cent to $1.62.

Sky Network Television fell 0.8 per cent to $1.23. The pay-TV operator said the issue price for the equity component of its $40 million RugbyPass acquisition was $1.24 per share. The RugbyPass vendors will end up with 25.1 million shares, or 6.1 per cent of the enlarged company.

Ash Burton and the Nightcaps

S

ometimes the name of the place that you live just seems to pop up on a page or screen, as if bigger than all the text surrounding it.

It’s a phenomenon well known to New Zealanders who can probably spot a Z on a page more readily than folks from most parts of the world. There’s something about that letter that acts as an alert to take note – just in case that Z leads to mention of our home country, or an interesting story.

If you’ve been watching the new TVNZ series, Funny As, this may have happened to you during the programme about New Zealand musical comedy, when the words Ash Burton flashed across the screen.

Funny As is a five-part television series and book that looks at the history of New Zealand comedy. It includes numerous interviews with our best known and most loved comedians. It opens the archives through original footage of television shows, live stand-up performances, unaired programmes and interviews with a pantheon of New Zealand comedians.

Through this footage, Funny As explores how New Zealanders have used comedy to navigate cultural change and make light of our unique – and often very funny – Kiwi culture, lifestyle and sense of humour.

It features well-known comedians and personalities, such as John Clarke’s Fred Dagg, Dames Lynda and Jools Topp (known as the Topp Twins), Billy T. James, Ginette McDonald as Lynn of Tawa, as well as more recent performers and directors such as Rose Matafeo, Naked Samoans, Taika Waititi and Flight of the Conchords.

While most people will know those familiar comedic names, perhaps less well known was the musical comedy group once known as Ash Burton and the Nightcaps.

While not actually from Ashburton, Ash Burton and the Nightcaps were very typical of musical comedy of the time, and no doubt their songs would have been very popular and well known locally.

Ash Burton was actually the stage name for rugby writer and journalist Alex Veysey. The band also included Ken Avery and other members who played various instruments and sang on stage or album.

Ken Avery was a songwriter, making the most of our distinct lingua franca. His turn of phrase made for the broad popularity and humour of his lyrics by making reference to familiar place names, experiences and situations.

By night Avery was a jazz saxophonist and by day a New Zealand Broadcasting Company radio programmer.

He is perhaps best known for vernacular lyrics such as the wellknown Kiwi road trip song Tea at Te Kuiti produced in 1962.

with my sweetie”, or “I’m going to canter on the plains at Canterbury” and “A Kiwi always tells you where to go”.

Its sequel, Gumboot Tango, produced in 1963, was recorded

by Ash Burton and the Nightcaps.

The rural setting of Gumboot Tango – set in a dance in a Taranaki woolshed – would be familiar to many people across New Zealand who had rural connections.

Many country woolsheds

across the country would have been the venue for parties and celebrations, such as 21st birthdays, anniversaries and after-balls.

On the B-side of the album, was the more regionally titled recording, By the Dog Dosing Strip at Dunsandel.

Avery’s lyrics and upbeat musicality is part of a long tradition of homegrown Kiwi musical comedy, that traces its history

back well before the more recent and famous classics. It sits in the genre of comedic music such as the Howard Morrison Quartet’s spectacularly successful My Old Man’s an All Black produced in 1960; or John Clarke’s rural classics a la Fred Dagg, that provide a backdrop of humour and sound through the 1970s.

While Ash Burton and the Nightcaps were not a true local classic, their lyrics and senti-

ments reverberate just as much in this district as other parts of vernacular Aotearoa New Zealand.

While these once hugely popular songs still pop up from time to time, if you’re keen to revisit Avery’s lyrics in detail, his self-published and hand-drawn book of comedy songs can be found online as The Ken Avery collected comedy songs in The Ken Avery Songbook, which can be downloaded for free.

Reality check time

M

eanwhile, in a sporting galaxy far, far away, New Zealand didn’t go so well …

While the majority of the focus was zeroed in on Eden Park, our globetrotting cricketers were kicking off a test championship campaign under the ramparts of a Portuguese fort in Galle, Sri Lanka.

The unvarnished truth of it was that it was a poor start to the extended campaign and just as ominously, a poor advertisement for test cricket.

Forced to sit through five days of mediocre cricket played in asphyxiating conditions, you’d be hard-pressed to make an argument for the need of a test championship.

(Thankfully, due mainly to the raw pace of Jofra Archer, test cricket looked pretty spectacular in London over the same five-day stretch.)

New Zealand didn’t do anything awfully but neither did they do anything particularly well.

Perhaps, after the extraordinary ebb and flow of their last outing (albeit in coloured clothing) it was no surprise that this proved a tough series to raise your game for.

The lack of any batting build-up – their only warmup match was ruined by rain after a single day in the field – showed, most notably with the skipper, who played two of the more indistinguished shots of his career in the space of three days.

New Zealand are not going to win many games when he scores four runs across a test,

such is the burden on Kane Williamson.

The easy blame for the loss is the spinners for not bowling well and failing to defend a challenging fourth-innings target, but this was a match lost in the first innings when the Black Caps scratched their way to 249 in the best conditions of the match – at least 100 runs shy of where they should have been.

That would have changed the complexion of the match because although the ball kept turning, the pitch never broke up – it just got slower.

The series shifts to Colombo now and there are questions for Williamson and Gary Stead to ponder, not least the role of Mitchell Santner.

The allrounder was ineffective with both bat and ball – 24 wicketless overs and 12 and 13 with the bat – in Galle and looks like a white-ball specialist.

Santner is no neophyte, having made his debut four years ago, but in 18 tests he has gone past 50 with the bat just twice and is averaging a tick under 40 with the ball.

It is difficult to see how he has a long-term future in red-ball cricket unless there is a dramatic uptick in fortunes in at least one of the major disciplines.

In terms of balance, it is difficult to guess the rationale behind playing three spinners when all of them are orthodox and two of them left-armers.

In Colombo, legspinner Todd Astle could come in for either Santner or Ajaz Patel, which would be a tough call on the latter given he took a five-for in the first innings at Galle.

Or they could turn to all-

rounder Colin de Grandhomme, though his game does not look suited to subcontinental conditions.

The ever-dependable Neil Wagner is the other option, albeit a tenuous one given he will lengthen the tail and cannot expect his short-ball attack to be successful in sluggish conditions. In other words, they have options but none that are likely to signal a dramatic shift in fortunes.

Chasing the series and test championship points means they have to be more aggressive in their outlook, certainly with the ball, hopefully at the top of the order with the bat.

That’s not where the Black Caps want to be, but it should at least make for a more appetising dish than what was served up in Galle.

The booing of Steve Smith at Lord’s when he was struck by Archer in a frightening incident eerily reminiscent to the blow that fatally struck Phil Hughes was about as low as a cricket crowd can go.

Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft – the sandpaper three – knew they were going to come in for crowd treatment this Ashes series and that’s OK, they deserve it.

But there’s a time and place for everything and when a guy has been struck to the turf by a ball delivered at more than 150km/h, in no circumstances is that the time.

Nor is it the time when he bravely/stupidly returns to the crease a little later.

It was mob mentality at its worst and shows that even the classiest venues can house classless patrons.

Maintaining momentum A weekend off heading into a final isn’t ideal, so Tinwald’s senior reserve men came to the rescue of Wakanui’s senior men’s hockey team on Sunday. They gave them a run around at the Ashburton hockey turf ahead of Wakanui’s big Mid/South Canterbury senior men’s hockey final this coming weekend. Even Hampstead women’s captain Hannah Mowat got in on the action ahead of Hampstead’s senior women’s final in Timaru this weekend, filling in for the Tinwald team. Both sides won their major semi-finals last weekend to go straight to the final, and had to wait until Saturday to find out who they’d play in those finals. The answer turned out to be the same for both – Cambridge.

Tuarua staying at least until end of year NZME

Noeline Taurua is ‘just going to chill’ about her future.

Noeline Taurua has confirmed she will stay on as the Silver Ferns coach for the time being.

AAP reports that the World Cup winning coach will remain as coach for the Constellation Cup series in October.

Taurua, who is currently coaching the Sunshine Coast Lightning in the Australian league, said she plans to stay on for the upcoming series against Australia.

“I’m coaching to the end of this year and then working through ... what happens next,” Taurua said after a win over the Melbourne Vixens on Sunday.

Following the World Cup win over Australia, Taurua told the Herald she would consider her

future in the New Zealand job following the end of the Australian league which finishes next month.

“I’m just going to chill,” Taurua said of her future beyond September after the Ferns’ 52-51 victory over Australia in the World Cup final.

“It’s been quite tiring but I’ve been very committed to both programmes and making it happen.

“It will be a good time to sit back and reflect.

“Just so you know I won’t leave Netball New Zealand in the lurch or Lightning as well.

“There will be a period of time that needs to be transitioned but we’re still working through details.

“That will be pushed to the end of the year.”

The Silver Ferns will finally have a chance to celebrate their Netball World Cup win with fans.

A reception at Parliament will be held on August 26 for the world champion Silver Ferns, who defeated Australia 52-51 in the grand final last month in Liverpool.

The public have also been invited to join the celebrations and catch a glimpse of the World Cup trophy.

Minister for Sport and Recreation Grant Robertson said the reception will provide an opportunity for the public to celebrate the Silver Ferns’ victory and interact with the team.

“Like many New Zealanders, I was on the edge of my seat watching the final, which was one of the best sporting showdowns ever seen,” he said.

“I am delighted that we are able to bring the team together and provide the New Zealand public with an opportunity to show their pride and appreciation.

“A Parliamentary reception is a fitting way to honour and celebrate the team’s extraordinary achievement, and I would urge Wellingtonians and visitors alike to join us.”

Netball New Zealand CEO Jennie Wyllie said it was a great privilege to have the Silver Ferns and management acknowledged with a Parliamentary reception.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to bring our wider team together to be recognised for their outstanding achievements, and it’s extra special for our fans, who have stuck by us on this ride, to have the chance to share in celebrating gold.”

Silver Ferns coaching staff Noeline Taurua and Deb Fuller, along with the majority of players will be present.

Veteran Maria Folau and captain Laura Langman will be the only Silver Ferns to miss the event as they are still on contract with the Adelaide Thunderbirds and the Sunshine Coast Lightning in Australia.

Lampard calls for patience AP

With the club’s seniors discovering late in the piece their Selwyn opposition weren’t making the trip to Methven for their Mainland Football division three game, the Reserves division six side ended up being the only team in action. They battled out a 4-all draw with the Universities AFC Presidents, and while many other grades have reached the end of their schedules, they still have time to run. Methven’s reserves side will play Parklands United in Christchurch this weekend, while the Methven FC Seniors have already won their division three title.

Frank Lampard climbed the steps in the tunnel and emerged to rapturous applause from Chelsea fans, a flame display and a giant banner at one end of Stamford Bridge that read “Welcome Home Super Frank”.

“The stuff of dreams,” Lampard described his homecoming yesterday.

He couldn’t mark it with a victory, though.

Lampard’s winless run as manager of the club where he is the record scorer and one of its greatest players extended to three games after Leicester fought back to earn a 1-1 draw in the Premier League.

“It’s very early for us,” Lampard said after his first home match in charge of Chelsea.

“We have to be patient as we are working toward something.”

Leicester wasted a clear chance to take all three points when Maddison weaved past Chelsea’s static defence in the 73rd minute only to blaze over from point-blank range.

“It’s a results business,” Lampard said.

“It’s strange because the performance against Manchester United overall made me happier than today, even though it was a 4-0 result. We need both.

“There were frustrations.

“If there were frustrations in the crowd, there were more frustrations in the team and on the bench.”

It’s not the World Cup, but it’s a very good start

alking points from a big rugby weekend.

So what’s the big picture?

The 36-0 All Black victory over Australia at Eden Park was a triumph.

Does it automatically mean the All Blacks will win the World Cup? To say “yes” would be acting as hysterically as commentators during the week who sensed the All Black aura had gone, that the power in world rugby had headed north, and that Steve Hansen and co had been in the job too long.

Be very grateful, if you’re an All Black supporter, that Hansen and his cohorts, pragmatic and knowledgeable, are in charge, not keyboard warriors.

Sure, and it’s never rained in Llanelli Big ups to World Rugby for now rating Wales as the No. 1 team in the world after they beat England 13-6 in game even English writer Mick Cleary called a “torpid, frac-

tured contest”.

The threat to the All Blacks in Japan is called South Africa.

Don’t be fooled by their second XV barely getting past Argentina 24-18 in Pretoria. The game in Yokohama against the Boks in five weeks’ time will be the real measure of the All Blacks at the Cup. Sam Cane sensed it, and Wayne Smith knew The remarkable win at Eden Park came, as most victories in sport do, from a combination of ideas being matched by execution, topped off by individual skills and brilliance.

The five tries the All Blacks scored were the most exciting part, but perhaps even more vital was the efficiency and passion they brought to their defence.

It’s a measure of his commitment that Sam Whitelock topped the tackle count with 17, and the front on tackling from him, Kieran Read, Ardie Savea, and Sam Cane was so devastating you flinched just watching.

Cane said the period when Australia hammered the All Black line in the first 15 minutes, but were denied, told him “the boys were up for this one”.

Defence coach Scott McLeod has taken such a pounding from critics that last year the man he replaced, Wayne Smith, was moved to send me an unsolicited email saying “The All Blacks have the right man in Stormy (McLeod), in the right seat on the bus. We should all be thankful for that”.

At Eden Park the proof was in the number of tries the Wallabies scored. Zero.

Sorry Nic, the judges have worked out your dance moves In Perth the two-step tango of Wallaby halfback Nic White seemed to mesmerise All Black defenders.

Not at Eden Park, where White went from the match-winner of a week ago, to a handbrake on the Australian backline, the All Blacks reading him with ease.

White’s stuttering service gave the All Blacks time to check their text messages, discuss Auckland’s awful weather, and debate whether Quentin Tarantino has really made his last movie.

Remember the kid who carried your armchair into the van?

George Bridge took his Super Rugby form into the test, and added a layer of brilliance that suggests the teenager who couldn’t make age-group rep sides in Hawkes Bay has grown into a man fit to compete with the world’s best in test matches.

Bridge moved to Christchurch as an unknown, first working for Allied Pickford movers, and then digging foundations for the city’s rebuild before his rugby career started to bloom, and he turned professional.

A part of his maturity, and ability to stay calm and grounded, may have been helped by never having been in the worshipful spotlight of televised First XV rugby.

Meanwhile, on the other wing Coach Hansen wanted a chance to see whether players like Bridge and Sevu Reece could step up in a cauldron, such as they’d find at the World Cup. In both cases the answer was a resounding, hell yes.

Reece provides the darting, daring, elusive running that made Nehe Milner-Skudder the surprise bombshell of the 2015 World Cup. As Fred Dagg would have said, “I think you’ll agree in going along 100 per cent with me in agreeing about that particular one.”

Women power to divisional win They’re a team that only comes together once a year for the one tourney, but the Mid Canterbury women’s basketballers proved tough to beat at the weekend.

Playing in the South Island Divisional Senior Basketball Tournament on the West Coast, the Mid Canterbury women won four from four to be crowned the 2019 champions, and they were over the moon.

Team spokesperson Ange Leadley said they exceeded even their own expectations.

With just three teams entered, the teams played each other twice – once on Saturday, and again on Sunday – and on both days, Mid Canterbury managed to get the better of both the West Coast and Westland.

Leadley said when they took to the court for game one, the first thing they noticed was how young and fit the opposition looked.

They were a little worried, but it turned out they needn’t have been, as the Mid Canterbury girls well and truly held their own.

“What we did really well was our defence and I think because a lot of us have played together on and off over the years, we were

just in sync,” Leadley said.

Mid Canterbury’s women and men proved to be forces to be reckoned with all weekend, and their defence was named the tournament’s best.

But at the same time, they were also scoring goals at a good rate down the other end, although the Mid Canterbury men exited at the semi-final stage with a loss to South Canterbury.

The divisional tournament was an old one which, after falling by the wayside some years ago, was resurrected last year.

Mid Canterbury hosted the return of the tournament at the EA Networks Centre in 2018, with West Coast Basketball hosting this year’s at the Westland Recreation Centre.

The performances of the Mid Canterbury senior sides followed hot on the heels of a top performance by a few young local basketballers who played under the Mid/South Canterbury banner at a recent Mainland tournament in Blenheim.

Both the under-15 Mid/South boys and girls made the finals at the tournament in the school holidays, where they took on Canterbury and won.

A disappointing early end Mid Canterbury’s senior men’s basketball team’s South Island Divisional Basketball tournament campaign came to a disappointing early end in Sunday morning’s semi-finals.

They lost to South Canterbury 78-73, but it was a result which could have been much different, coach Brian Kerr said.

Their tournament on the West Coast had gone pretty well to that point.

In game one against a club team from Nelson Mid Canterbury were at times overeager, but they got out to a handy lead and kept the ABC Rhythm side at bay to take the win 84-76.

Marc Juntilla top-scored with 20 in the first one, while Pip Johnston added 17 and Fotu Hala 11.

In game two against West Coast, a rugged affair between two evenly matched sides swung the way of the Coasters early on and they led at half-time, but Mid Canterbury knuckled down and produced a top defensive effort to turn the game around.

In the fourth quarter Mid Canterbury really got their offence going and outgunned the Coasters, winning 93-78, with Johnston topping the scoring with 25.

Kerr said it was a cracking game of basketball, where the Mid Canterbury boys had to dig deep.

“Their defence was awesome as they managed to shut down the West Coast’s many offensive threats and then went about outplaying them on the offensive end.

“A real feel-good win,” Kerr said.

In the semi-final against South

Canterbury on Sunday morning, Mid Canterbury got off to a flyer, but South Canterbury were not going to be denied and they upped their defensive intensity.

What followed was a bruising encounter.

But Kerr said the most disappointing aspect was the fact that the two referees appointed to the match were out of their depth.

That meant that the underhanded side of basketball came out, with play at times becoming dangerous as players became frustrated with the lack of control, Kerr said.

“What you find in these situations is that it tends to be the more experienced physical players that cope better with this situation and with the Mid Canterbury team being such a very young team, that’s exactly what happened,” Kerr said.

South Canterbury utilised the refereeing better, and Kerr said it was amazing to him that the game didn’t boil over into serious altercations.

“What was geared up to be a good game of basketball, actually turned out to be an officiating debacle which let the players and the spectators down badly,” Kerr said.

The game eventually went the way of South Canterbury 78-73, with Nick Fechney top scoring for Mid Canterbury with 17, Hala adding 16, Johnston 13 and Sean Hunter 11.

Kerr said the officiating issue was addressed immediately by the tournament organisers to ensure it didn’t happen again.

The game brought Mid Canterbury’s tournament to an end, and Kerr said it was one where everyone played a part, with Johnston leading the way.

“Marc Juntilla was carrying on his good form on the fast break and hassling the ball.

“Nick Fechney and Fotu Hala had good all-round tournaments as well,” Kerr said.

“However for me it was Thomas O’Brien who was outstanding.

“Big boards, lots of blocked shots and just a real presence inside the paint.

“Glimpses of his offensive abilities came to the fore, especially against the West Coast.”

He said the bench players were also vital.

“It’s really the hardest role in the team.

“The expectation is to be fully wired when you hit the court and to do the business can be tough.

“Sean Hunter, Tony Gilbert, Jase O’Connor and Liam O’Connor were able to manage that,” Kerr said.

Although they didn’t win, like they did in 2018, the tournament brought Mid Canterbury together, as tournaments did, Kerr said.

Mid Canterbury would now turn their attention back to the Christchurch division one men’s competition, with the game they were meant to play on Sunday against Gators Red deferred to tomorrow night.

A win there, would help pave the way for Mid Canterbury to seal a place in the semi-finals in their return season to the city competition.

World Cup focus for Tall Blacks The MBO Tall Blacks enter the next phase of their World Cup buildup knowing that the level of competition and intensity is about to ramp up, with back-toback games against Canada in Sydney tonight and tomorrow night.

Head Coach Paul Henare is excited at the prospect of going head-to-head with the Canadians and the challenge they bring.

“We have spent some time watching both Canada games against Australia, game one they came out and played really well. “(Kevin) Pangos was instrumental in controlling the tempo of that game and they shot the ball really well.

“Pangos is a world class point guard, and they have talent across the floor, watching the pace he played at in game one, the way he controlled the game was outstanding.

“Across the floor they have some really good weapons.”

Henare was impressed by the response from the Australians to win game two and level that series but knows that both teams are like the Tall Blacks and looking more internally than at their opposition.

Henare is of course coming up against an NBA championship winning coach, with Canadian coach Nick Nurse having just won the title with the Toronto Raptors.

The two countries have some

recent history, with the Tall Blacks taking the Canadians to the brink at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games qualifying tournament in the Philippines, going down 78-72 with the game in the balance into the final moments.

Corey Webster starred throughout that tournament and was a key figure in the semi-final against Canada, scoring 21 points in a defeat that still rankles.

“It was a tough game against Canada that I feel we should have won and could have won if we were at full strength.

“Ike who is a huge part of this team went down injured and we were undersized after that.

“I think we were leading for most of the game and just lost it at the end, you always hang on to those moments and remember how you played, but this is a preparation game for us and while we want to win the game, our focus is on the World Cup. “They will be a step up from Japan, but that is nothing new to us in international basketball, we always play great teams and compete against the best, this is just another game.”

Henare’s side may not be at full strength for this series, with Jarrod Kenny and Alex Pledger sitting out recent practice with illness while Shea Ili is likely to be rested as he manages a groin strain, again with the priority being Brazil in China on September 1.

The lightly raced 5yr-old put away a handy intermediate grade field courtesy of a bold drive from Methven’s Gerard O’Reilly.

O’Reilly made use of Girls Get Loose’s good staying motor by pouring pressure on at the 400m.

That gave the backmarkers too much to do to catch the Rakaia trotter, who held out Sundons Flyer and The Dominator to win for trainer Stuart Sutherland.

“She is a great staying mare, so she was always going to keep going,” O’Reilly said.

Girls Get Loose’s victory turned around two poor performances after a hot run of form earlier in the winter.

Sutherland echoed O’Reilly’s opinion that the mare’s staying ability was her biggest asset.

He said he was looking forward to an opportunity to race the Superfast Stuart mare over 3200m.

Girls Get Loose may get to do that at the NZ Cup Carnival, which would be the horse’s main aim if her good form continues in to November.

The trotter’s victory had extra meaning to Sutherland because of his family connection to the Kurow Trotting Club.

“I had uncles on the Kurow committee and the breed this mare comes from was from the Kurow and Duntroon area originally.”

Sunday’s win was Girls Get Loose’s third, in her 11th start.

Livamol on the radar Mauna Kea is being set on a path towards the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) at Hastings in October after picking up his seventh career win in the Vets On Riverbank at Otaki on Saturday. It would be his second tilt at elite level, after finishing unplaced in the Gr.1 Captain Cook Stakes (1600m) last year. The six-year-old son of Per Incanto has just had the one run further than a mile, finishing third in a 2060m race last year, and his trainer Paul Moseley thinks that’s his ideal distance.

Opaki trainer Jim Wallace had a perfect weekend, recording two wins from just two starts. Fiveyear-old mare Showmeware kicked off proceedings by taking out the Aquashield Roofing (1200m) at Otaki on Saturday before Tipperary Mary won the Sportz Bar 2060 at Wanganui on Sunday. Wallace was pleased with Showmeware’s victory, her second from five career starts, and he said she benefits from rain-affected tracks. - NZME

Selection job gets tougher NZME Discarded All Blacks wing Rieko Ioane is in a race against time to get his starting spot back after being released to play Mitre 10 Cup rugby this weekend.

The 22-year-old Ioane, one of the standout test players of recent seasons, is expected to line up for Auckland against Bay of Plenty at Eden Park on Saturday as one of nine All Blacks made available to feature in the provincial competition.

Brad Weber (Hawke’s Bay), Liam Coltman, Josh Ioane (both Otago), Vaea Fifita (Wellington), Braydon Ennor (Canterbury), Atu Moli (Tasman), Jackson Hemopo (Manawatu) and Luke Jacobson (Waikato) are the other squad members released.

Ioane, who has scored 23 tries in 26 tests, was replaced in the starting XV by George Bridge for the Bledisloe decider at the weekend and has seemingly dropped down the pecking order after the Crusaders flyer impressed with his all-round performance.

When asked whether the impres-

sive performances by some individuals on Saturday made his selection job harder, All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said it was hard to parse.

“In some ways it makes it easier because some people really put their hands up last night,” Hansen said.

“Where we had question marks, you no longer have question marks.

“But in other ways, it makes it a bit tougher, too.”

“It always is,” he said of it being a tough job.

“When you name a team someone misses out.

“It’s the end of their dream and this is a pretty big one – going to the World Cup.” As he said: “There’s a bit of pressure on the other guys now to front up.”

The All Blacks have one more warmup match – against Tonga in Hamilton on 7 September – before jettig off to Japan for the Rugby World Cup. Ioane is likely to be included in the 31-man squad set to be named next week, but a strong outing for Auckland could aid his cause to usurp the likes of Bridge and Sevu Reece for a spot in the starting XV.

Big win gives MC a shot at title Mid Canterbury United’s first team needed a big win on Saturday, and that was exactly what they got.

Their club record 13-0 win over the Burnham FC Bobcats at Burnham on Saturday meant that they pretty much now only needed to win their one remaining game this season to claim the Mainland Football division one title.

That one last game is a catchup game against Nomads United AFC on Thursday night, and it is the only division one game left to play, so it all comes down to that.

As it stood, the Halswell United 1964s are top of the table after

their 7-0 win over Nomads United AFC. But, most importantly, Mid Canterbury United’s 13-0 win meant that while they are in second spot, they were equal when it came to the all important goal difference.

That meant that if Mid Canterbury United beat Nomads this week, they should claim the title and earn themselves an invite up to the next level – the Mainland Football championship.

So that 13-0 win over Burnham on Saturday was huge in the grand scheme of things.

Mid Canterbury headed to Burnham knowing they needed to win big and couldn’t have

asked for a better start, with their intensity putting them up 4-0 after just 10 minutes.

By half-time the score was 6-0 and while Mid Canterbury United coach Marty Fitzgerald was happy with the lead, he was still asking for more. He wanted his squad to be more clinical with their passing and to move the ball quicker across the park to create more chances.

“This was put into practice with relentless pressure and goals coming at an alarming rate,” Fitzgerald said.

He said the 13-0 scoreline they finished up with was a record for the club.

Luke Martin was on target, scoring seven of those goals, while Jamie Smitheram also produced a solid performance and nabbed a brace.

At centre half Stan Poki Poki got two goals, while Miller McLauchlan and Nick Campbell added one each, with Campbell putting in a man-of-the-match performance at right half.

Fitzgerald said he was impressed by the result despite weather conditions, and although Burnham were not a full strength squad, they still fronted up to play.

Mid Canterbury United now had just one must-win game

to go, against Nomads United AFC at Rolleston’s Foster Park at 7.30pm on Thursday night. They have only dropped one game so far this season – against the Halswell United side they were now fighting for the title with.

If they can do it, it will be the icing on the cake for the Mid Canterbury United club, with their second side looking like they’ve wrapped up the Mainland Football division five title.

They picked up a 7-4 win over the Universities AFC Jugs at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday, which ensured they kept the top spot on the competition leaderboard.
