Education programmes could be cut and parent donations increased after several Mid Canterbury schools lost thousands of dollars of funding in the last round of decile changes.

The first decile changes in seven years were announced last November after being delayed by the Christchurch earthquakes.

It was a mixed bag for Mid Canterbury schools, with four schools increasing their decile, seven schools

decreasing, and 12 schools remaining the same decile.

Decile numbers determine how much operational funding a school receives from the Ministry of Education.

While some schools were given a funding boost as a result of the changes, figures released by the Ministry of Education show that others lost thousands of dollars from their budgets.

Rakaia School was hit hardest, losing $11,594 a year in funding after

jumping from a decile four to a decile six.

Principal Mark Ellis said the $80 donation paid by parents each year for activities and resources would have to be reviewed as a result.

“We don’t see more money in parents’ pockets,” he said.

“It’s not like the decile lift has remarkably given a lift in funding in other places.”

Thompson’s mum was in the audience on Tuesday when the popstar sang the track Ronan. Swift has only ever performed the song once before – as part of the Stand Up to Cancer telethon in 2012. Swift pointed out Ronan’s mother, Maya Thompson, in the audience before performing the emotional song, which she wrote using blog entries posted by his mother.

China souvenirs to mark Queen’s reign An official range of commemorative china has been made ready to celebrate the Queen becoming the longest reigning monarch in British history. Getaway blocked A Hawke’s Bay shoplifter didn’t count on a group of rugby players – including former All Black Zac Guildford – blocking his getaway.

Guildford and fellow Hawke’s Bay players Chris Eaton and Ryan Tongia were at a Napier eatery on Tuesday when a thief dashed out of a clothing store nearby, TV3 reported yesterday.

Guildford said he and Eaton were sore from the weekend’s ITM Cup action but Tongia snapped into action and caught the thief 200 metres down the road. “Tongia set off on his perfect running style like he was catching a ball,” Guildford told TV3. “It was pretty impressive to watch actually. I didn’t realise how fast he was until [yesterday].

He didn’t even look that fast when he was chasing my kicks the other weekend. It was pretty impressive.” Guildford said the incident aroused plenty of attention.

‘Think before you share’ Facebook has turned to a group of Central Otago school pupils to help create new guides encouraging New Zealand children to think about what they share online.

The online guides, which will be available on Facebook New Zealand’s page, will be launched in Cromwell next week. The guides “Think before you share: hit pause then post” and “Help a friend in need”, were created with the help of Central Otago anti-cyberbullying group Sticks’n Stones.

They will be presented at a workshop for 100 high school pupils from the Central Otago region at Cromwell and Districts Presbyterian Church next Wednesday, and a public workshop in Clyde for parents will follow that evening.

E. coli outbreak at pre-school

Three children at a Mid Canterbury pre-school have contracted E. coli, resulting in parents of all children at the centre having to take faecal samples from their children for testing.

In the wake of the outbreak of toxic Verotoxin E. coli (VTEC) bacteria, the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) has urged Mid Cantabrians to be extra vigilant when it comes to hand washing.

The three children and a parent of one of the infected chil-

dren contracted VTEC from the community and not the centre, a spokeswoman for the pre-school said.

The issue was brought to light when it became apparent a child at the pre-school had diarrhoea.

“Our policy for nappy changing and loose nappies or diarrhoea is pretty tight,” she said.

“On the second loose nappy or first diarrhoea nappy the parent is contacted.”

The spokeswoman said one child had reoccurring loose nappies, so their parents were contacted.

The pre-school wouldn’t allow the child back until a doctor’s clearance was obtained.

The presence of VTEC bacteria was then identified on August 6.

On Tuesday a Crown Public Health representative visited the centre, and checked its cleaning procedures.

“They were more than happy,” the spokeswoman said.

Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey said the bacteria was very infectious and children showing symptoms had been asked to stay away from the pre-

school, until tests showed they were free of bacteria. “All parents at the pre-school are being provided with specimen jars and are being asked to provide samples of their pre-schoolers’ faeces,” Dr Humphrey said.

“This will help us determine whether the bacteria has spread any further in the preschool.”

Dr Humphrey said contact with farm animals and drinking unpasteurised milk were common ways VTEC could be transmitted, but it could also be spread person-to-person by the faecal-oral route.

Vandals are costing ratepayers thousands of dollars each month as the Ashburton District Council is forced to replace damaged road signs.

The latest episode of vandalism occurred in the Hinds district, where 20 road signs were vandalised. And that has meant more than $8000 of ratepayer money has been spent on replacements in the first two weeks of the month alone, says district councillor Stuart Wilson.

While the cost factor is disappointing, of greater concern is the dangerous situation that’s created when a sign is destroyed, he said.

“This is just mindless behaviour and we want to hear from anyone who may have witnessed anything or knows of any vehicles that might have been involved.”

In some cases it would have taken considerable effort to knock signs over, Cr Wilson said.

“There’s one where it’s clear a truck with bull bars has been used; there are tyre tracks right up to the sign.”

Areas that have been hit by vandals include the Hinds Arundel Road where two speed signs have been destroyed, Delamaine Street in Hinds where chevrons,

controls signs and other road signs were destroyed and speed signs on the Isleworth Road near Hinds Cemetery.

“This kind of behaviour is totally unacceptable and as a community we need to work together to help stamp it out.

“The council hopes people will come forward if they’ve witnessed something because their information could assist in prosecuting those responsible,” Mr Wilson said.

While Hinds appeared to have been targeted recently, vandalism of road signs was a district wide problem that cost ratepayers thousands of dollars each month, he said.

The size of the sign damage problem can be measured in close to $200,000 a year said council roading services manager Brian Fauth.

While the council budgets for its road signs to have a 12 to 15 year lifespan, the reality is this is much shorter.

“Most signs are damaged well before this and most of that damage is intentional. Some is because of wind or accidents but a lot of this damage and this expenditure could have been prevented,” Mr Fauth said.

Where it can, the council will prosecute offenders to recoup some of the cost for repairs, but catching those offenders relied on community vigilance and the willingness of people to report

incidents, Mr Fauth said.

“The council needs information, vehicle numbers or photos on a cellphone. If we can take people to court we will because we don’t think ratepayers should be paying for this work.”

June was a lean month for the Ashburton District’s 40 commercial accommodation owners.

While the number of guest nights across New Zealand rose that month by 3.12 per cent on June 2014, the Ashburton District watched bed night numbers drop by 3.44 per cent.

Guest nights in June were at their lowest for the past five years at 11,538. The June high was recorded in 2011, 14,716.

The falling guest nights drove occupancy rates down to just 18.16 per cent. In June 2011 the rate was 24.27 per cent. During the month, the average length of stay was 2.17 nights.

Ashburton was not alone in watching guest nights fall for the month, however, with Kaikoura, Waimakariri, Hurunui, Mackenzie and Waimate all looking at negative growth. Waimakariri had the greatest fall, 30.3 per cent.

Only Selwyn, up 26.4 per cent, Timaru, 10.7 per cent and Christchurch, 9.3 per cent showed positive growth.

The news was not all bad for the district, however, with Ashburton’s bed night numbers increasing by 4.22 per dent. Methven and Mt Somers had a tough month with numbers falling 13.86 per cent.

The low number of people being caught out in Mid/South Canterbury under new drink driving laws is a good sign, according to the AA. According to figures released by police this week, just 53 motorists have been fined in the region under the new, lower drink driving limit, which came into effect at the end of last year.

The concern with the previous blood alcohol limit was that by the time people reached it, they may not have been able to make a good decision about driving, he said.

“I think people are much more aware now,” he said.

thing for us to bring the limit down, let’s not forget that the limit we have now has been in place in Australia for years,” he said.

However there would always be recidivist drink drivers and those who made poor choices, he said.

“I don’t think it’s about being caught by the police, I think it’s about having an accident and hurting someone else,” he said.

“How are you going to live with that?”

A pilot was forced to make an emergency landing at Ashburton Airport yesterday after the engine in a microlight plane failed shortly after take-off.

Emergency service personnel, including police and three fire crews, flocked to the scene early yesterday afternoon.

Ashburton police senior sergeant Scott Banfield said fortunately the pilot and sole occupant was very experienced and made a controlled crash landing.

“He did very well,” he said.

Ashburton deputy chief fire officer Graeme Baker said three appliances attended the scene, and assisted with lifting the plane so the wheels could be forced back into place.

A spokesman for St John said an ambulance was sent to the scene but was stood down as nobody was injured.

The incident has been referred to the Civil Aviation Authority.

The revaluation of the Ashburton District is almost completed and new rateable values for the district’s 15,059 properties will be in the mail next month. New valuations are effective from July 1 but will not be used for rating purposes until July 1 next year.

The Ashburton District Council will have valuations in the mail on September 16 and property owners will have until October 29 to lodge an objection if they do not agree with the new value assigned to their property. Values are assessed using an internationally approved ‘mass appraisal’ approach that takes into consideration a property’s individual attributes as well as local sales. Valuations have been under way since July and will be completed this week.

Dairy farm prices are dropping, according to the Real Estate Institute of NZ. The institute’s Dairy Farm Price Index fell by 13 per cent in the three months to July compared to the three months to June. Against July last year, the index fell by 12.1 per cent.

REINZ rural spokesman Brian Peacocke said Fonterra’s move to cut its farmgate milk price forecast to $3.85 a kg of milksolids from $5.25 a kg had confirmed widespread expectations among farmers.

“The key issue for many is the time prices are likely to remain at current levels, with particular concerns being expressed for lower order and 50/50 sharemilkers,” he said in a statement.

“Banks generally appear to be supportive, but conversations are taking place giv-

Across the board, culling of lower performing cows was evident, and the retention of surplus assets was under a review.

The news was brighter for other sectors, with record prices being paid for beef, good prospects for lamb, improving prices for wool and a buoyant market in kiwifruit and pipfruit.

The REINZ All Farm Price Index fell by 2.9 per cent in the three months to July compared to the three months to June, but rose by 3.9 per cent compared to July 2014.

The index adjusts for differences in farm size, location and farming type, unlike the median price per hectare, with does not adjust. For the three months ended July, the median sales price per hectare for dairy farms was $35,304, compared with $35,531 for the three months to June.

Three programmes to help parents negotiate the minefield of parenting through separation will be held in Ashburton later this year. Presbyterian Support is hosting the sessions to help parents deal with the issues around separation and how they affect their children. Issues covered will include how to cope with disagreements on things such as day-to-day care, contact arrangements, choosing a school or child care and what happens to the family home. The course is aimed at making it easier for both parents and their children to work through the significant changes and challenges that come when parents separate.

CDHB hospital update The demolition work that began at Ashburton Hospital in 2013, is now complete. In addition to this, the fourth asbestos scrape in the area where the old Theatre Block once stood, is also complete. The results of more than 20 asbestos tests have come back clear, with the exception of one. A plan is now in place to proceed with work in this area, and consultants are set to undertake tests of the old Outpatients and Therapy Services building, now it is accessible.

The decision around removal or encapsulation of this area will be decided upon once tests have been completed. The overall completion date is still set for mid-2016.

Christchurch fire A woman critically burned in a Christchurch house fire on Tuesday has been flown to a specialist burns unit in Auckland. Police have spoken to other occupants and neighbours of a residential property in Linwood as part of an ongoing investigation into Tuesday afternoon’s blaze. Detective Sergeant Dave Parker says the two people in the property at the time of the fire were taken to Christchurch Hospital. A woman in her 20s has since been discharged.

Rise positive but caution urged

A significant hike in the price of whole milk powder has gone some way to restoring confidence in the dairy sector – but the slump is by no means over yet, a Mid Canterbury dairy spokesperson says.

Whole milk prices rallied by 19.1 per cent to $1856 per tonne at yesterday morning’s Global Dairy Trade auction reversing a sharp decline set in motion in March when the price reached $3272.

The overall GDT price index gained by 14.8 per cent and the average winning price was US$1974 per tonne, compared to US$1815 per tonne at the previous auction two weeks ago.

Drier than average conditions in some parts of the world have impacted on milk production and there were also political factors at play.

“At the moment demand is slowly increasing again – things have settled down in China after the sharemarket crash in Shanghai. People are also finding their way around the Russian embargo,” Mr Leferink said.

“The US is competitive at the moment because of the low grain prices but a cow can’t only eat grain, it needs other fodder as well and that is getting dearer.”

While yesterday’s news was encouraging it didn’t necessarily signal the end of the recent volatility in the market.

Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Chris Murphy said any funding decreases would mean cuts.

“All school budgets are literally down to the cent,” he said.

While schools would be “loathe” to cut learning programmes, any “nice-to-haves” such as trips and guest performances could be on the chopping block, he said.

Asking parents for extra financial support would also be tough.

“Parents already contribute quite a bit to what, on the face of it, is supposed to be a statefunded education,” he said.

However while some Mid Canterbury schools are scrambling to meet the shortfall, others have received a boost to their budgets.

Ashburton College was the big winner, receiving a 1.4 per cent increase of $31,049, while Allenton School received an extra $9180.

According to the Ministry of

Education, the estimated operational funding for Ashburton schools this year is $8.38 million, excluding teacher salaries and property funding.

Ministry head of sector enablement and support Katrina Casey said schools that had their decile increased were being supported through additional transitional funding

that would help them adjust to their revised budgets.

With the effects of the dairy downturn starting to become more apparent in the community, principals say the socioeconomic status that deciles were calculated on may have changed.

A spokesman for Minister of Education Hekia Parata re-

ferred questions about school deciles to the ministry.

According to the ministry’s website, schools can apply for a review of their decile annually.

Reviews can be sought if there has been a significant change to either the school’s catchment area or the socioeconomic status of its students.

“One swallow doesn’t make a summer – but it’s certainly heartening, hopefully we are back on the right path – 19 per cent for whole milk powder is a huge lift.”

Mr Leferink said New Zealand was well positioned to ride out the dairy downturn as the only producer of scale able to react to the volatility.

“There’s no one else who can compete without subsidies – because the cost of production is way higher in other countries.”

However, while the US has only ever been on the world market with skim milk powder, Mr Leferink warned it will probably have the capability to supply whole milk powder when the next dairy downturn hits, and a long term strategy is needed within the industry.

Rural lending specialist Rabobank has also flagged a substantial improvement in milk prices by mid-2016.

Hospital services stretched Auckland City Hospital had to cancel some elective surgery yesterday because a winter surge in illnesses has boosted the number of patients needing admission.

The hospital’s emergency department had high numbers of people seeking care and treatment for a sustained period, said Auckland District Health Board spokesman Mark Fenwick.

Many had needed to be admitted for flu-related illness and some elderly patients had longterm conditions flaring up in winter.

The hospital had an average of 635 beds and despite increasing capacity at short notice, was now running at its upper limits.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Margaret Wilsher said the hospital regretted it had to postpone five out of the 51 general surgery patients due yesterday.

The situation for today was unclear.

It was reviewed twice a day in light of the number of patients admitted through the emergency department overnight.

At this time of the year, hospitals experience a rise in patients with respiratory illness and chest infections.

However, at Middlemore Hospital, spokeswoman Lauren Young reported: “It is an unprecedented demand and our staff are under pressure.”

Fugitives arrested Police have arrested wanted man Dolphy Kohu and two others at Waiouru in the central North Island.

The three people – Kohu, a male and a female – were arrested without incident at a road block at the intersection of State Highway 1 and SH49 about 9.20pm.

Police said a number of firearms were recovered from the vehicle they were travelling in.

The arrested trio would be taken to Ohakune police station for questioning.

Central District Commander Superintendent Sue Schwalger said the arrests would come as a great relief for communities in the central North Island.

“These arrests come after some great work from police staff who have worked tirelessly throughout the day to locate Mr Kohu,” she said.

“I’m pleased that there was no further violence involved against police staff and that our communities will have the security of knowing Mr Kohu has been apprehended tonight.

“I would like to thank all the

police staff who have been involved in today’s operation, and all members of the public who have provided information or assisted us in resolving this matter so quickly.

“The operation is not concluded yet and there is still a considerable amount of work to be done to piece together the events of the last 24 hours.”

The group went on the run after ramming a police car, shooting at the two officers inside, and then stealing the police car and attempting to flee in it in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Extra police patrols had been deployed in the wider Ohakune region last night, after the arrest of one woman from Miro St yesterday afternoon.

Large parts of the Central Plateau were in lockdown and schools around Ohakune, Waiouru and Raetihi were closed as police hunted the group, with the assistance of the Eagle helicopter.

Kohu was on parole after being jailed for a 2013 shooting.

Airport’s beacon days numbered

The non-directional beacon (NDB) at Ashburton Airport is a reminder of New Zealand’s aviation past, but that beacon’s days could be numbered.

At a recent airport users’ meeting the possibility of replacing the beacon with GPS approach into the airport was discussed.

Hamish McCoy from Airways NZ said the drive for change was part of a national programme to withdraw NDB and while Ashburton’s beacon would not disappear overnight, it would eventually go as part of a longer national process.

Canterbury Aero Club has been the main user of the beacon, but Mr McCoy said that if Ashburton moved to GPS approach then the airfield would receive a higher level of use.

Moving to GPS, however, would carry a significant cost for aircraft owners, he said and there would also be a cost, around $35,000 to establish a GPS system at the airfield.

Non-directional beacons (NDBs) have been in place in New Zealand since about World War Two, and the aircraft componentry similar to that in use today became available for civil use in the 1950s, but they are being progressively retired from service with replacement by more modern and highly accurate technologies.

son said he was comfortable to let the change to GPS evolve because of the number of older aircraft flying from the airfield and the cost involved to those owners in making the change.

Mr Nelson is keen to see the airport become more proactive in recovering landing fees from visiting aircraft.

Most airports charge a fee for private planes using their runways, but many of the smaller, unmanned fields rely on honesty boxes. And in Ashburton’s case, whether or not landing fees were paid was pretty hit and miss, Mr Nelson said.

Monis was arrested in December, 2013, on charges of accessory to murder relating to the murder of his wife and was released on bail despite the opposition of homicide detectives. He was released again on bail after sexual assault charges were laid against him in April, 2014, and remained on bail when more sexual assault charges were brought against him in October that year. On Wednesday homicide Detective Senior Constable Melanie Staples said she contacted ASIO and the Department of Immigration and Border Security about Monis because of his ongoing bail for postal offences.

‘Network’ planted bomb Malaysian tourist Neoh Hock Guan was just about to pray at Bangkok’s Erawan shrine when he dropped the candle he wanted to light.

“When I bent to pick it up, I heard the explosion,” he told Malaysia’s the Malay Mail newspaper. “The next thing I knew, none of my family members were in sight.”

Neoh’s wife, son, son-in-law, and four-year-old granddaughter were all killed as the blast ripped through the shrine on Monday night, twisting metal and shredding bodies.

Of the seven family members in the shrine on Monday evening, only he and his pregnant daughter survived.

The remains of a fifth family victim, his sister-in-law Lim Soo See, have still not been

identified. The bombing killed at least 20 people, including 11 foreigners, Neoh’s family among them, and wounded 123.

The ethnic Chinese family had left Penang by train on Saturday, travelling north through Thailand on a trip that was to culminate in a few days in the capital.

Neoh’s 20-year-old son Neoh Jai Jun, a student at a university in Taiwan, had returned home to join them on the holiday, The Star newspaper reported.

He died in the explosion, along with Neoh’s wife Lim Saw Gek, his son-in-law Lee Tze Siang and granddaughter Lee Jing Xuan.

The four-year-old is the youngest confirmed victim of the explosion so far.

The shrine reopened on

Wednesday with Buddhist monks leading prayers. An unidentified member of Neoh’s family laid bundles of clothes at the shrine to represent their loved ones, a monk said.

Meanwhile Thailand’s national police chief has said the deadly bombing was carried out by “a network,” as investigators focused on a man seen in a grainy security video leaving a backpack behind just 20 minutes before the explosion.

Police chief Somyot Poompanmoung made the comment as he headed into a meeting of national police commanders, saying he was carrying orders from the prime minister who “is worried about the security of people and tourists in Thailand”.

Two days after the attack, no

one has claimed responsibility.

But authorities said they were certain that the man seen in the video — with shaggy dark hair, wearing a yellow shirt and carrying a large, dark-coloured backpack — was responsible.

“He didn’t do it alone, for sure. It’s a network,” said Somyot. He did not elaborate.

Police have released still photos of the man, both with and without the backpack, and a video posted separately on Thai media appeared to show the same man sitting on a bench at the shrine, taking off the backpack and leaving it behind as he walked away.

The attack has raised concerns about safety in a city that draws millions of tourists and had never experienced an attack of this magnitude. - AP

Ashley Madison cheaters’ details released Intimate details of sexual fantasies and personal information of Australian members of a cheating website have been released online.

AAP obtained a copy of the leaked files that contain email addresses and personal messages which appear to be from members of Ashley Madison.

The file contains detailed personal information from Australian users with one message reading: “I’m open-minded and adventurous (both in and out of the

bedroom), and love passionate sex - giving as much as receiving,” included in the message data was the user’s name, location in Sydney and email.

Postal addresses from around Australia were also in the file, including a Riley St in Sydney and the details of a wedding photographer in Brisbane.

As well as the addresses, phone numbers and names were also included.

Ashley Madison, which describes itself as “the most famous name in infidelity” and

offers members the ability to arrange affairs, last month became the target of a hacker group.

The file titled One Per Day contains thousands of messages and emails that appear to be connected to users of the website. The file is just one document in a huge dump of data which has been reposted several times online.

The hacker group, known as Impact Team, made good on a threat to post the information online by releasing the data on

Wednesday to the dark web, which operates below the public internet and is only accessible through a special browser.

“Avid Life Media has failed to take down Ashley Madison and Established Men,” the hacker group posted on a website. Avid Life Media, a Canadian-based company, owns both websites.

“We have explained the fraud, deceit, and stupidity of ALM and their members. Now everyone gets to see their data,” the hacker group said in its posting.

Islamic State militants beheaded one of Syria’s most prominent antiquities scholars in the ancient town of Palmyra, then strapped his body on one of the town’s Roman columns, Syrian state media and an activist group said yesterday.

The killing of 81-year-old Khaled al-Asaad was the latest atrocity perpetrated by the militant group, which has captured a third of both Syria and Iraq. Since IS overran Palmyra in May, there have been fears the extremists, who have destroyed famed archaeological sites in Iraq, would demolish its 2000-year-old Roman-era city at the town’s edge, one of the Mideast’s most spectacular archaeological sites.

Deaf trio on trial Three deaf people who were allegedly seen using sign language to plot a murder while on a Melbourne train have been committed to stand trial. Georgia Fields, 19, Warwick Toohey, 37 and Jake Fairest, 26, are accused of killing Toohey’s former flatmate Robert Wright, 36, who died in hospital after falling from his Ringwood balcony in January.

A committal hearing has been told a woman who knew the trio from the Victorian College for the Deaf witnessed them have a discussion about killing a man in Auslan sign language while on a train. “They were planning on killing a man,” Michelle O’Neill said in a statement tendered in the Melbourne Magistrates Court. “They were planning on having a pole and hitting him on the head when he was asleep.”

In the past 14 days alone there have been 23 sexual harm incidents involving 43 children.

An emotional and frustrated Children’s Commissioner Bernie Geary has launched a landmark report into the state’s residential care system, which he said was creating opportunities for sexual abuse. Decile ranking system flawed Sue Newman

nder quite stringent funding limits, schools across New Zealand do a remarkable job.

There wouldn’t be a single state school that could say it was funded to the level it required and yet each of those schools manages to meet the educational needs of their children year after year.

Funding for schools is a constantly changing business and a host of factors outside a school’s control come into play.

We’ve had the decile ranking system for a while. It’s based on the perceived wealth of a school community. The better off you are, the higher your ranking and the less money you’ll receive.

That only tells half the story.

Take what’s happened in Ashburton. Schools that have a heavy component of dairy farms in their catchment are deemed to be wealthy. They’ve been bumped up the decile rankings and their funding reduced.

That was fine when dairy prices were high, but as they’ve slumped those communities may struggle to find the extra cash their schools need to provide everything their previous cash grant covered. The decisions were made last year, but their true impact is only now being felt.

Schools have been remarkably adept at bridging the gap between providing the education and opportunities they believe are needed and the cash they’re given. Most of that bridging is done by their community and many do an outstanding job of raising quite significant amounts of cash to ensure their kids don’t miss out.

Schools such as Rakaia and Hampstead have been bumped up the decile scale and their funding has dropped. To provide the same options for students they can either raise school fees or undertake a fundraising campaign in their community.

The impact of the new rankings couldn’t have come at a worse time in a dairying district where communities are bleeding. The system is flawed; it must be time for change.

In my opinion, the opinion is wrong

ue Newman can write what she wants and noone is prepared to challenge her about it.

That’s my opinion about the editorial she wrote titled “The value of out-of-classroom education”.

Not only is she wrong in my opinion, but the fact that no one has written back standing up for primary school education is bewildering.

I am especially annoyed at my principal colleagues who have not defended their professions!

Come on! The whole point of an opinion piece is to provoke thought and debate.

To all the principals in the Ashburton District, you have let an editorial writer get away with this.

I have waited and waited for a response. Nothing on Friday, nothing on Saturday and nothing this week. That is not good enough.

I believe you would be more likely to respond if the council told you it wasn’t collecting your rubbish for two weeks of the year because they were taking holidays.

If you don’t know what I am having a Rumpelstiltskin about, last Thursday Sue wrote an editorial defending parents who took children away from school

to have overseas holidays during school time, because the airfares were cheaper.

The guts of her argument was that in the wider definition of the word education, there is value in children travelling and learning about other cultures, languages, countries etc.

As with all opinions it was seriously lacking any evidence to back up this so-called “value”.

I can, however, vouch that on many occasions, children have returned from Movie World having missed out on a number of lessons and knowing that to have fun in Australia you have to wear a coloured wrist band.

But I can see why Sue has defended parents and put her opinion across. Cheaper airfares are cheaper airfares and parents work very hard to have the money and time off to give their children, and themselves, a well-deserved holiday.

Ok, but her statement about missing two weeks of primary

school is no big deal compared to missing the same at secondary school is just simply wrong.

That statement devalues what primary schooling is about.

Again, it’s an opinion that Sue is entitled to have.

It is probably based on her own experiences as a child and as a mum. (Although I am only assuming Sue is a mum, I don’t know for sure). However, primary schooling has moved on from the days of “chalk and talk” teaching and pure knowledge acquisition.

So what has turned my bewilderment into annoyance is the fact that no-one in the primary education field has responded.

I am sure that if a response had been written, then it would be published.

Are our primary principals and teachers not willing to respond to such statements about their profession? Do you not value what you do? Do you principals not value the work your teachers put into lessons that children are taken out of class from and miss?

So now I am going to issue a challenge and an invitation.

Firstly to Sue, you are warmly invited to Tinwald School to observe our lessons and ask teachers what it means when a child misses a number of les-

The children are engaging, involved in their learning and sometimes have bits of sandwiches on their faces.

The teachers are passionate and focused on adapting their programmes for the different levels of learning and learning styles in their rooms. And the principal is opinionated but wildly enthusiastic about the primary school he leads.

Now a challenge to all primary principals and teachers.

Each day the Guardian should receive at least one letter from a teacher or principal hammering home the point that we totally value the work we do.

That missing primary school lessons is a big deal. That our lessons are as of much value as secondary school lessons.

If you did this, I calculate the Guardian would receive letters until February 18, 2016. Now I worked that out using maths I was taught on a daily basis – at PRIMARY SCHOOL! Power prices ‘to stay flat’ The country’s biggest power generator, Meridian Energy, says retail power prices are likely to stay flat in the next year.

Although it has put up energy charges for some North Island customers in July, overall it is following the wider industry trend and keeping a lid on prices in the intensely competitive retail market.

Chief executive Mark Binns said the retail market was tough for all power companies.

Energy prices were down 1 per cent for residential and small commercial customers in the year to June 30 and 2 per cent for corporate customers.

“We will review where we are on South Island prices but given where we are with agriculture at the moment you would have to be cautious about increasing prices. We would most certainly expect the market to stay there over the next year.”

said it wasn’t expecting retail price rises over the next year.

Around 19 per cent of customers switch suppliers every year which forces companies to keep their price rises down.

However, the looming withdrawal of a large chunk of coal and gas generation could lead to power price increases in the longer term.

Contact Energy is shutting its 400MW gas fired station in Auckland later this year and Genesis plans to take its 500MW coal-fired units out of commission in 2018. But Binns said that pressure on supply could disappear quickly if the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter was closed, which could happen in 2018. “I’m pretty confident the market will sort it out and you’ve got to remember Tiwai has the right to give a termination notice at the state of 2017 and be gone a year later.”

Two property fund directors owe investors hundreds of thousands of dollars despite the Financial Markets Authority extending a repayment deadline three times.

The situation, according to an investor in property syndicates associated with the pair, has left the market regulator looking “weak and ineffective”.

SPI Property Fund directors Murray Alcock and Allister Knight were this month given their third extension to repay the outstanding amount of $241,394 to investors.

The men, who in April were each fined $25,312 for failing to file audited financial statements for several years, last year said they would repay investors $1.08 million of interest and principal.

They agreed in court to enforceable undertakings with the FMA to pay back $600,000 of principal by June 30 this year.

The undertakings followed an investigation by the FMA, which had concerns about Alcock and Knight’s management of investor funds associated with SPI entities.

The regulator said last October that it had concerns about SPI and “apparent failures” to comply with financial reporting

requirements, hold investors’ subscriptions on trust, repay subscriptions owed to property fund investors and keep them adequately informed about their investments.

While Alcock and Knight agreed to repay the principal by June, $241,394 of the $600,000 was still outstanding come July.

The FMA agreed to extend the deadline to the end of last month and then pushed it to the middle of August. That deadline has been extended once again to mid-October and one investor in SPI-related property syndicates said the FMA appeared “weak and ineffective” for not enforcing the undertakings.

In response, an FMA spokeswoman said the regulator be-

lieved “good faith efforts are being made to pay the remaining balance”.

“The time extension increases the prospect of funds being returned to investors and therefore is in the best interest of investors,” the spokeswoman said.

“We have also taken into consideration the views expressed by some investors that we should give the directors the opportunity to pay rather than take action that might remove the prospect of payment. We have been very clear with the directors that our rights to take strong action are preserved.”

In the undertakings, Alcock and Knight also agreed to not act as a director or promoter of a public issuer of securities until October 2019.

Maxwells deliver on consistency Mid Canterbury farmers Alister and Jeanette Maxwell believe supplying a consistent product was the reason they were finalists in this year’s Beef + Lamb New Zealand Sheep Industry Awards Blackdale sheep supplier of the year.

The Maxwells farm 300ha of slightly rolling country at the foot of Mt Hutt.

Their 1600-ewe flock is coopworth based, heading towards a 50/50 coopworth texel mix, through the use of texel/coopworth rams.

Southdown rams are used as terminal sires, supplied by Alister’s father, Robert. Lambing averages are 160 per cent from the mixed-age ewes and up to 80 per cent from the hoggets.

For the past 15 years, the Maxwells have supplied lambs to Anzco on fixedprice contracts to fulfil Waitrose supply commitments and were this year’s winners of the Waitrose producer of the year award.

“We simply supply the good, consistent product that they’re looking for,” Mr Maxwell said.

The couple nominate the numbers of

lambs and the timing of supply, then crack on and deliver. Drafting begins mid-December and carries on until late April. Lambs are drafted to about 40kg liveweight, resulting in 17-17.5kg carcases.

They do not use any specialist crops, but do work at keeping pasture quality high and feeding ewes to specific requirements.

Single-bearing ewes are identified at scanning and receive a pink tag and are mated to the terminal sire in future.

Two pink tags and they are culled.

Triplet-bearing ewes receive a purple tag at scanning and are grazed separately – the extra effort pays off, with tailing percentages of up to 255 per cent from triplet mobs and with minimal shepherding.

The property is well subdivided, with paddocks averaging 5ha and the bonus of a range of soil types to work with – from peaty swamps and native areas, through to clay soils and shingle fans.

Mr Maxwell said Anzco was a good, straight-up business to deal with.

Future looks rosy for fresh

The fresh potato market is experiencing firm prices this season on the back of good export demand, but the processed potato market is experiencing a softening due to imports from overseas.

Potatoes New Zealand chief executive officer Champak Mehta said there has been more demand than supply in the fresh market, particularly with the export demand for potatoes from Fiji.

Fiji has consistently been New Zealand’s largest fresh export potato market as they don’t grow their own potatoes and have to import.

“We supply that export demand by almost 100 per cent …

They are used to eating tuber crops.”

Mr Mehta said Vietnam was another potentially important market for fresh potatoes and had “just come on line” – making future prospects for increased demand good.

“So the demand from Fiji, plus domestic demand and the slight reduction in seed potatoes available because of the drought early on this year means that we have a little more demand than supply.”

The adverse weather severely impacted on domestic supply last season with crops down between 20 to 30 per cent, causing a price hike of up to 20 per cent.

Potato chip producers ETA and Bluebird struggled to keep product on the shelves in December and supermarkets struggled with limited quantities of fresh potatoes to sell.

Because of this, prices this season are staying “relatively firm”.

“We think historically in the past two seasons that prices have been lower than they needed to be to provide an economic return, so a firming of the price means that the growers are making an economic return. We think it is fairly priced at the moment.”

The optimism in the fresh table market had led local grower and Potatoes New Zealand director David Redmond to comment in the NZ Farmers Weekly recently

that potatoes could be a good option for dairy support farms.

Mr Redmond said he had been talking to a number of dairy operators who were cutting cow numbers and putting green feed crops in.

He suggested potato growers are always looking for land to lease to grow potatoes and that could be an option for dairy farmers looking to fill the void.

Mr Mehta agreed but said

more supply could remove the dynamic underpinning of prices growers were experiencing.

However, it’s not all positive, with the processed potato market experiencing a softening due to imports from Europe and Australia, according to Mr Mehta.

“These products are soaking up a little bit of demand. In order not to oversupply some of the processors have eased back on their plantings.”

Talley’s Mid Canterbury field officer Ross McCallum said they had cut back their processed potato area by 20 per cent this season, but had “rolled” the contract price over.

He said sales had been down even though the dollar had stayed down and it could take up to nine months to see an improvement.

McCains and Mr Chips declined to comment on their areas this season.

Classic attention-seeker

H

ello, may I introduce myself ?

My name is Ruby and I’m the Elf which is currently residing in a certain neighbourhood.

I’m a Riley Elf, and although my name does not reflect my exterior colour, which is lemon or yellow, my interior is mostly red.

I think these colours suit me and I hear others say so as well.

Just two families have looked after me.

Soon after I was born I went to live with the late Daphne and the late Arthur Stephenson who I liked a lot.

After Daphne passed away I remained with Arthur for a while along with my cousin, a nice Vanden Plas 1100 who was a bit bigger than me.

More recently I came to live with my current family, and they are also very good to me.

I have nice warm accommodation and I enjoy regular grooming.

While I like getting out

After we bought Ruby we occasionally saw Arthur when we were out driving, he would give us a wave.

Arthur was a lovely man and we were sad when he died a few years ago.

and about from time to time I’ve never undertaken too many long trips, local travel suits me fine.

Just between you and me I do like a bit of attention, and I notice that when I do go out people are interested in me. Just the other day my care-person and I took a motoring writer for a little jaunt around town, and quite a few people saw us and waved.

Often people want to know more about me, but I leave it up to the people who look after me to explain. After all a lady has to be discreet, and they enjoy speaking on my behalf.

Normally a lady does not divulge her age, but because I know readers will be genuinely interested I’ll let you know I was born in 1965 so I have a significant birthday this year.

Modesty and decorum would normally prevent me from discussing my vital statistics, but I know you will be curious and having been assured you are all very respectful, I will also share this information with you.

I have a four cylinder 998cc transverse mounted motor, which drives my two front wheels via a 4 speed gearbox.

Without meaning to sound cheeky or conceited I’m told I’m a peppy wee thing with classic looks and elegant appearance.

Another memory of Arthur Stephenson

Just between us I quite like hearing this.

I’m not at all haughty, so if you happen to see me about town please wave.

It’s been nice to share my story with you but it’s now time for me to return to what I enjoy – living the life of Riley!

One of Ruby’s carer’s part of the story (or memories of Arthur).

In the early 1970s my wife had a very nice red sporty twin carb Riley Elf named Honey, it was her first car and she loved it. I had driven a Mini Cooper S and the cars were similar in many ways, very peppy, direct and nice handling.

My wife was sad when she had to sell Honey around 1980.

About 10 years ago she was talking to a work colleague, when the discussion turned to cars and the much-missed lovely little Riley Elf. My wife’s workmate told her about Arthur Stephenson who had a Riley Elf which he planned to sell, but which was not yet on the market.

Well next thing it’s off up the Methven Highway to see Arthur.

Sure enough there it was along with a Vanden Plas. Arthur offered a two car deal but we had to decline because we

really had enough cars.

A real gentleman and true craftsman, Arthur showed us around his workshop and described the work he did restoring woodwork on classic cars like Bentleys, Rolls Royces and other makes.

It was obvious he was an immaculate and careful worker.

Arthur was able to tell us the Riley’s life story, he had kept all the service records and handbooks.

Sadly there was an unfortunate incident when the car was stolen and driven into the Ashburton River.

The Riley was written off by the insurance company but Arthur bought it back of them and restored it to more or less how it is today.

Arthur told us it was Daphne’s car, she was the first owner and she mainly used it for shopping trips. At that stage Daphne had recently passed away and Arthur felt it was time for him to sell the Riley.

As it turned out it was my wife’s birthday at the time so that solved another problem.

So in the last 10 years we have had a great deal of pleasure from “Ruby”.

But she doesn’t like being out in the wet or cold which helps

Thanks to everyone who entered our competition, you all came up with the correct answer which was of course a Riley Elf. Someone kindly gave us extra tickets for the Pick a Box Show so we were able to draw three prizes which went to Raewyn Crosby, Judith Crozier and Helen Hooper.

The story and the competition brought back memories for Judith Crozier who told us “I had a green Riley Elf in the late 1960s and 70s, it had red upholstery and I loved my little Riley! “ By that stage the renowned turkey business operated by Judith and Phillip Crozier necessitated the need for a van, so Judith sold the Riley to get one.

She says “we could fit more turkeys in a van than we could in the Riley”.

But the little car is not forgotten and it’s really nice that the Croziers now have a granddaughter called Riley!

Age Concern Ashburton The Age Concern committee were pleased to host their Annual Volunteers Luncheon on Friday August 14 at the Seniors Centre. The input of such dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers enables us to sustain the services we offer to the older population of the Ashburton district. Their contribution is greatly appreciated.

Ashburton Indoor Bowls It’s been a busy few weeks on the mats of Ashburton over the past two weeks and there’s a bit to catch up on.

Well done to Ken and Rowena Mackenzie who claimed the Husband and Wife Pairs, beating Bernice and Geoff Laird – also well done to Maurice Sunbeam and Anne Ross who won the Jack and Jill Pairs on the same day.

Des Hawkins emerged the winner of Ken Hampton Singles on the weekend beating Ken Mackenzie in the final – well done Des. There’s a whisper around the traps too that the Harper Challenge is now held

by Rakaia after they defeated Carew on Monday night – they will now hold it over the summer as this was the last defence for the season.

Well done also to our three representatives in the South Island team last week, Grant Wilson, Michael Lawson and Matt Markham.

It wasn’t quite to be for the South Island team who lost by the slender margin of one game to their Northern counterparts 25-23 in an enthralling contest.

Matt managed to medal with the triples team he was a part of winning their tie 3-0.

Congratulations to all those selected to face Geraldine and Temuka tonight at the stadium – for those making their first appearance for the season, enjoy it and go well.

Saturday sees the Championship pairs being held and on Sunday a contingent are heading to Canterbury to compete in their Championship Triples.

Ashburton Photographic Society For July’s ‘Members Night’ the sharing of field trip images proved interesting and a good learning tool as photographers shared new techniques tried and tested as opportunities arise.

Field trips so far this year include Mayfield Show, Mt Hutt, Otipua Wetlands, Moeraki, and Barrhill – these have all provided a great opportunity to extent our photography to achieve that ultimate image!

In lieu of our field trip for July tutors Geoff Cloake and Ron Lindsay travelled from Timaru to teach a class on the use of ‘Lightroom’ - a programme used to store and enhance images. This was well received and has given those in attendance a much wider knowledge of this programme.

Judge Peter Harper from Christchurch gave us an amusing and informative critiquing of our Natural History Competition with ‘on the spot’ judging which we all enjoyed and benefited from. He was very impressed and commended members for their effort to access ‘correct titles’ for our Natural History subjects. Coronation Target Shooting Club Seven members travelled to Wanganui to compete in the South Island v North Island competition. The highlight was that, after missing out narrowly on selection for the New Zealand Junior team, Lanelle McArthur came back with a vengeance to win a place in the New Zealand women’s team. To be confirmed but quite possibly the youngest woman ever to achieve that. Hailey Beevor continued her good form to win a place in the Junior team in spite of being unwell.

Nina McKenzie and Bryan Hunter were both “Bridesmaids” in that they missed selection for New Zealand teams by just one place. Nick Stewart and Sandy Collett performed well but fell just short of selection. An excellent effort which prompted a lot of interest from senior shooters, some of whom were heard to remark that the Coronation Club must be doing something right and they should find out what it is and follow suit. Back on the home front Bill Rankin found some form to top the scores with a very solid 98.7. Tuesday night had a good turnout. Richard Pearce shared top spot with a very excited Ella Bonnington on 94.2 closely followed by Michaela Smith who scored 93.5, Emma Smith, Lindsay Matheson and Andrew McKenzie all on 92 confirmed the depth of talent available. A major milestone for Sandy Collett who combined the magical 100.10 with a 100.6 on a double card, her first magic possible, Steve McArthur 99.7 and Jayden Collett 98.5 were keeping her honest throughout.

Creative Fibre The meeting took place at the A&P showgrounds on Monday August 17.

There were 31 ladies present. After the usual business we saw the 15 tea cosies which had been part of a display and competition up at Motueka. One of our members Jeanette Maxwell had won a prize in the competition. The Open Day had attracted creative fibre people from Oamaru up to Christchurch with over 200 attending. It was a great success. Stavely camp will be held September 7-11 and all those wishing to attend need to contact Dorothie Stapely for further details. Shona’s

basic spinning class has led to some new members to the group. Nomination forms for the Octover AGM need to be filled in by next month.

Members are invited to knit small toys for McDonald House children.

In the baby and children’s category there were socks, bootees, cardigans and a jersey and in the adult section there were a striped jersey, headrest cover, teapot cosies and cones of fibre from overseas for weaving. The meeting part closed at 11.30 with a committee meeting to follow.

Grey Power Ashburton On Monday July 17, Grey Power Ashburton President Jim Burgess welcomed 40+ members to the monthly general meeting at the Seniors Centre. Apologies were accepted from Trevor Gamblin; Rex Tarbotton; Mr & Mrs McLimont; Betty Lovatt; Elizabeth Davies; Maureen Ford and Dorothy Streeter.

Jim urged members to take advantage of the rates rebate scheme; having done the exercise himself on the Internal Affairs calculator, with the only income being NZ Super, he would have a rebate of $56. Pamphlets are available from Community Energy Action who will be provide our speaker for February; also booklets from Heartland Bank who offer Home Equity loans to seniors.

Jim then introduced our speaker for the afternoon; Hollie Woodhouse a local girl who loves sport and adventure.

Hollie gave a very interesting presentation about her participation in the gruelling Marathon de Sables a long distance (251km) foot race in 5 stages through the Sahara desert in Morocco. She was part of a team who were supporting as their charity the Rangers of several national parks in Africa. The Rangers guard the rhinos from poachers, who cause horrific injuries when removing the horn.

The race itself was very rugged and through some very demanding terrain, with very basic facilities.

Greer Ricketts passed a vote of thanks and presented Hollie with a fruit tray.

The raffle was drawn and prizes distributed. Bernard entertained while afternoon tea was served.

Lions Club of Hinds & Districts The Hinds & Districts Lions August meeting drew 45 members and guests on Tuesday evening to the Hinds Community Centre where President David Keeley opened with a welcome and an introduction to the Guest Speaker Alan Piercy. Recently retired as a Vet in the district, Alan held everyone’s attention as he spoke on the importance of knowing and understanding the soil quality of your land. He explained the benefits to be seen in the quality of the land and

animals if nutrients were kept at the correct level and he showed and demonstrated the workings of several instruments he used to measure such things as the soil brix level. Alan was thanked

by Lion Angus Cameron, presented with a Certificate of Appreciation and warmly applauded. Longbeach Playcentre ladies served a very enjoyable meal which was followed by a presentation from District Governor Fern Blake who spoke about her priorities for the year, two of which were membership and diabetes research. President David thanked DG Fern, accepted her Banner and presented her with a Hinds Banner. Raffles were drawn, the appropriate fining of a few members by Tail Twister Lion Peter Lowe was completed, then in general business the planned September Projects of Odd Shoe Day, Alzheimer’s Collections, Boulevard Day and the Hinds Township ‘clean-up’ were discussed.

Once appropriate duties and tasks had been assigned to Team Leaders, President David then declared closed what had been another interesting and entertaining meeting with plenty of fellowship.

Rakaia Garden Club On Monday August 10, the Rakaia Garden Club held its monthly meeting. Another chilly day but a good attendance and a lot of winter entries for the competitions. Jean Evans explained the finer points of displaying prize winning daffodils so that people are prepared for the next month’s daffodil competition. This was followed by a fun quiz organised

by Jean. Two pages of well-known but unnamed garden plants were passed around for people to identify. The quiz proved to be quite tricky. Trish Molloy gained the most points.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Probus Club A new member who had transferred from Harewood Ladies Probus Club was welcomed at the August meet-

ing of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Probus Club. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect for the passing of member, Marion Marshall and also past member Beryl Argyle. The Mini Speaker was Linda Tayles, of the Ashburton Mackenzie Group, who told that the group had started nearly 25 years ago, to enable families and caregivers of adults with disabilities to have time out while their charges are given social activities, bus trips, craft activities and games together. One of their main aims is to teach social skills. They now meet twice weekly and have a coordinator and staff member, as well as volunteers.

The main speaker was Andrew, from the Heartland Bank assisted by Karen and Grace. They told about Home Equity Loans which are for home owners 65 years and over. The Heartland Home Equity Loan enables the use of some of the money tied up in a house without having to sell it. A loan is taken against the home. The total amount, including accumulated interest, is only repayable when selling the property or moving permanently from the home. There is a floating interest rate and no requirement to make any loan repayment until the end of the loan.

After the speakers had been thanked, President Avis Kingsland closed the meeting with the thought for the day.

Mid Canterbury Men’s Probus Over 90 members attended our August 18 meeting and were welcomed by President Allan, who proceeded to induct 2 new members. This was followed by a mini-talk by Allan Lill who described his family history which recently held a re-union to mark 150 years since W.T. Lill jumped ship at Lyttelton in 1864. W.T. Lill played a large part in Ashburtons early history, and the Lill family have farmed in Mid Canterbury ever since. More recently they have diversified into seed cleaning, having established Nor’West Seeds which now exports seeds around the world. Our guest speaker after morning tea break was Owen Moore, President of the Ashburton Aviation Society. Owen illustrated his talk with power point slides and took us through the history of the museum which was started by a group of 9 enthusiasts in 1972. The Society has now grown to over 450 members and boasts 3 new hangars and a host of immaculately restored aircraft. These include their star exhibit, the Hawker Harrier jump jet which the club purchased from the UK Defence Department for $5,500. It took 10 years to restore and is one of only two in the southern hemisphere. Finally, with Owen’s interest in aviation, it came as no surprise to hear that his daughter Anna flys F111 fighter jets for the Australian Airforce. Frank Luxton thanked our speaker and President Allan closed the meeting.

Waireka Croquet Club Time for us to reappear in the Club News -although the Croquet Club may have seemed dormant over the winter we the members have been very busy with Mahjong twice a week and Euchre once a week. Add into the mix the Annual Bridge Luncheon and Mahjong Tournament – both very successful and lots of work for our members - and you will understand when we say the winter has flown. Special thanks to Karen McCrea from Property Brokers for her sponsorship of the Bridge Tournament and Dulcie Pierre for her Mahjong sponsorship.

Both very much appreciated by Waireka Opening Day for the 2015/16 Season is the 5th September. This includes both Codes, Association and Golf Croquet – and play starts at 1pm. Could be a little early for the shorts but hopefully we will get a fine day to try our skills on the lawns.

The following day is our Annual “Have a Go” Day – although of course all are welcome at Waireka at any time. But Sunday September 6 we will have members on hand with nothing else to do except show you how it all works when playing Golf Croquet. We have a great team of willing people who will help and you will be surprised at what a good way it is to exercise and socialise with likeminded people. Would love to see you there at 1.30pm on the September 6. Stay warm until then.

Fillies in winning form for Wanganui showdown

A pair of black type-performed fillies from last season began their three-year-old quests for further stakes success on winning notes at Taupo yesterday.

The Stephen Marsh-trained Girlsarebackintown and Frank Ritchie’s She Is Stryking collected their maiden victories to set up a clash at Wanganui in the Listed O’Leary’s Fillies’ Stakes on September 5.

Marsh got more than he had bargained for when Girlsarebackintown, third in both the Gr.3 Phoenix Park Classic and the Listed Champagne Stakes last term, raced away with the

NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race.

“I thought she would be lost for a bit of early speed and would run on, but the heavy track helped and she’s tidied up a pretty good field,” he said.

“We used this as a lead-up to Wanganui and then we might go to Ellerslie. We’ll probably dodge Hastings and there are quite a few options for her.”

Girlsarebackintown settled back in the field before she improved across the top and she drove clear in the straight to turn the tables on Magic Dancer, winner of the Phoenix Park

Classic at their last meeting.

Danielle Johnson rode Girlsarebackintown and she also guided She Is Stryking to victory in the Mark Ewen & Associates 1200.

“She tracked up nicely behind them on the turn and it was a nice run,” Ritchie said. “I’ve been looking at Wanganui for her and this was a perfect set up for that.”

He is confident She Is Stryking, a minor placegetter in last season’s Gr.2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes and the Listed Murdoch Newell Stakes, will impress.

Celtic look for complete performance

It could be a case of déjà vu for netball fans tonight, as Celtic and College meet in the premier netball semi-final yet again.

Last year’s semi-final saw the two teams go head-to-head, Celtic securing a narrow 29-26 win over the young side.

Celtic then went on to face Hampstead – going in to the final as the favourites and backto-back defending champions – and managed a convincing 31-25 win.

Their victory last season meant they were the last team to lift the trophy outdoors - as netball moved indoors to the EA Networks Centre stadium this year – but whether they can do it again this year is yet to be seen.

Celtic coach Angela Leadley said her team was feeling good heading into tonight’s’ game, but had a couple of things to work on from last week.

Last Thursday night the two teams came up against one another in the fifth and final round of premier netball’s round three, College securing a comfortable 32-21 win.

“Obviously we didn’t play so well against College last week, so we’re looking at fixing up some of our mistakes and putting in a complete 40-minute performance,” Leadley said.

She said while the squad is not an exact replica of last year’s premier championship side, the majority of players are there and the team is happy with the season.

“You don’t want to peak too soon,” Leadley said.

Future qualifying path looks much brighter The Tall Blacks’ hopes of qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics were dealt a heavy blow on Tuesday night, but their future qualifying prospects look much brighter.

No longer will the Tall Blacks have to battle solely against the impressive Australians, with FIBA president Horacio Muratore confirming that New Zealand and Australia will move into the Asian qualifying zone from the 2017 onwards.

The move will prove hugely beneficial to not only the Tall Blacks’ chances of qualifying, but also for the growth of the game as a whole in New Zealand, with the Tall Blacks set to play six home and six away games in the qualifying process.

That news means far more opportunities for New Zealand fans to see the Tall Blacks play on home soil, while the 12 games on offer will provide

more revenue for Basketball New Zealand, and a greater chance for the squad to integrate, improve and showcase themselves on the world stage.

The Tall Blacks are ranked 21st in the world – a ranking which would place them fourth in the Asian confederation behind Australia (11th), China (14th) and Iran (17th). Add in the improvement of promising young talent going off to college basketball – such as Tai Wynyard, Sam Timmins and Matt Freeman – and the Tall Blacks could find themselves in a much better scenario to snare one of the Asian qualifying spots for both the World Cup and the Olympics.

qualifying circuit applies for the Tall Ferns and age-group sides – with the Tall Ferns set to especially benefit from the change after again being outclassed by the Australian Opals in their qualifying series.

With the Ferns having never come close to toppling the Opals in the 31-year history of the FIBA Oceania Women’s Championship, they will no longer have to solely match themselves against the world’s second best side to qualify.

Coe pips Bubka Britain’s Sebastian Coe has beaten Sergey Bubka in a tight vote to become the new president of world athletics body, with a series of doping controversies at the top of his agenda. Coe received 115 votes to Bubka’s 92, and will take over the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) from Lamine Diack, who used his departing speech to take a defiant stab at the sport’s doping detractors, saying they had painted athletics as a “monster”.

England’s pressure to perform

By GreGor Paul England and expectation – now there’s a marriage that may not last. Their World Cup could end before it really starts, their campaign buried under the weight of a nation’s dream.

Pressure is a cussed thing and goodness knows they will feel it in a way they may not expect once the World Cup kicks off.

This is England’s big moment – they are hosting what will be the biggest tournament in rugby history.

It’s a tough business being hosts – and England may find it’s especially tough as no one turns up at Twickenham expecting to see them lose.

World rankings, reality, injuries and form don’t often get in the way of the Twickenham faithful who are always convinced England will beat whoever they are playing.

That 38-21 win against the All Blacks in 2012 was perhaps the worst thing they ever did

– drawing a false picture as it did about the qualities of both teams.

And in what is a perfect storm of sorts, England find themselves in a pool with Wales, Australia and the much improved Fiji which is presumably why All Black coach Steve Hansen took his chance to drop a little doubt bomb this week.

Speaking to The Times, Hansen said: “The big thing England have to cope with is the massive expectation on them playing at home because the English will expect them to win.

“While they’ll have that same expectation themselves, they still have to deal with that pressure. It’s something that the All Blacks have to live with in New Zealand all the time but it might be a little bit foreign to them.”

There’s nowhere to hide from it. Media coverage will be beyond saturation. The team hotel will have reminders everywhere. Walk out the door and people who would normally have no idea, will be wishing the players all the best – offer-

ing friendly reminders to make sure they win. There is no privacy – players are suddenly public property.

That sort of pressure lives in the head. It’s hard to shut out.

It’s draining, it can be overwhelming and it can be debilitating on game day.

In 2011, many of the All Blacks talked about being under siege – of this endless anxiety they felt at carrying the nation’s hopes. But the difference with the All Blacks is that this kind of scrutiny and pressure is a constant for them once they are on the field. They can never escape expectation.

It doesn’t matter if they are playing Scotland or South Africa – New Zealanders expect victory. There’s also a level of sophistication within the All Blacks these days about how they deal with pressure – a situation that has arisen because Hansen has long-held the belief that it is the most significant intangible component that impacts test rugby.

U18 league trip still hopeful The financially strapped New Zealand Rugby League still hopes to revive two Under-18s fixtures against the Australian Schoolboys after cancelling them because of money woes.

Two weeks ago, the NZRL declined an invitation from Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League to play two games, at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium on September 27 and at Kougari Oval, Wynnum, on October 2, because it could not finance the trip.

The call was made after the NZRL’s annual financial report in late June revealed a modest surplus of $16,000 for 201415, leaving in tatters goals set within the 2014-17 strategic plan of building $10 million in revenue and a $2 million surplus by 2017. Despite its predicament, the NZRL says it is continuing to work with the Australian Rugby League Commission in an effort to reschedule the games.

BY PATRICK MCKENDRY Sonny Bill Williams will take another step into the unknown when he attempts to win an Olympic sevens gold medal at Rio de Janeiro next year, an opportunity he says could be the biggest challenge of his career.

The All Blacks midfielder, who will concentrate fulltime on sevens next year which will rule him out of the Chiefs season, said attempting to adapt to sevens, a game he had never played before, would be “scary”.

However, after making a reasonably smooth transition from league to union and back several times, plus his experiences in the ring as a boxer, Williams and national coach Gordon Tietjens will be quietly confident he will be a success.

Asked why he wanted to

change to sevens, Williams said: “It’s simple. The Olympics. Going back in time, the best sportsmen ever have been Olympians.

[Usain] Bolt, [Muhammad] Ali, the list goes on. It’s just an amazing opportunity to become one of those. As a rugby player you strive to be an All Black, win a World Cup and win a Super Rugby title. As a league player, for myself, you strive to win a comp. I’m lucky enough to have achieved that ... but most sportspeople would love to go to the Olympics and I haven’t achieved that.

“I’m not too sure,” he said when asked how he would go in the shortened version of the game. “It’s going to be a massive challenge, probably the biggest of my career. I’m going to give it my all and time will tell.

ing regimes I have to become accustomed to. I don’t know if I’m going to be any good at sevens. That’s why it’s pretty scary.

I’m sure as hell going to try my hardest ... all I can do is try my best and it’s going to be an honour if I put on that sevens jersey because there have been some great players who have played and are still playing in the team.”

Williams, 25, a handful for opposition defences in the 15-player game, has the potential to be devastating in the world series and Olympics next year with his power and offloading skills.

He is a near certainty to be selected for the All Blacks’ World Cup squad at the end of the month, but once that’s over he will have a break and quickly change focus.

The more aerobic style of the game and training sessions are

likely to have an effect on his body shape, which he acknowledged.

“Your body is a funny thing, it seems to adapt to different types of training. You just have to do it often and next year with sevens training hopefully my body will adapt.”

Williams’ Chiefs teammate Liam Messam has also been selected in the sevens squad, as has Hurricane Ardie Savea – but both loose forwards will also be available for some Super Rugby.

Williams, who doesn’t know what position he will play or which tournaments he would play in, said: “The other players have had sevens experience, but I’ve had nothing. I think going into such a big campaign for me to put my best foot forward I know that [playing fulltime] is the only way.”
