Education programmes could be cut and parent donations increased after several Mid Canterbury schools lost thousands of dollars of funding in the last round of decile changes. The first decile changes in seven years were announced last November after being delayed by the Christchurch earthquakes. It was a mixed bag for Mid Canterbury schools, with four schools increasing their decile, seven schools

decreasing, and 12 schools remaining the same decile. Decile numbers determine how much operational funding a school receives from the Ministry of Education. While some schools were given a funding boost as a result of the changes, figures released by the Ministry of Education show that others lost thousands of dollars from their budgets. Rakaia School was hit hardest, losing $11,594 a year in funding after

jumping from a decile four to a decile six. Principal Mark Ellis said the $80 donation paid by parents each year for activities and resources would have to be reviewed as a result. “We don’t see more money in parents’ pockets,” he said. “It’s not like the decile lift has remarkably given a lift in funding in other places.”
