Ashburton’s new millionaires are a couple in their 30s with young kids.

The family became $22.2 million richer on Saturday after winning big with Powerball First Division.

The winners, who wish to remain anonymous, purchased their ticket online at MyLotto.co.nz with just minutes to spare on Saturday evening.

“We were cooking dinner when I suddenly remembered that I hadn’t picked up a ticket for the draw, so I raced to my laptop and quickly grabbed a ticket on MyLotto.

“Luckily I managed to get in just in time,” the winner said.

They buy a Lotto ticket every draw and always buy a Dip online at MyLotto.

The couple, who are originally from Nelson, had heard about an Ashburton player winning big, but forgot to check their ticket for a couple of days.

“We had a really busy weekend so it just didn’t cross my mind. I ended up checking the ticket first thing in the morning when my fiancé and the kids were still in bed.

“I watched as each of the winning numbers were circled off on my ticket – they just kept coming. I couldn’t believe

it when I saw I had all the right Lotto numbers and then came the Powerball.”

When he realised how much they’d won, the winner only had one thought on his mind – sharing the good news with his fiancé, who he has been engaged to for six years.

“He thumped up the stairs screaming ‘Come here. You’ve got to come look at this’,” his fiancé said.

“My mind started racing, trying to work out what might have happened – he sounded so worried. “

$22m to raise a family From P1 “So the kids and I rushed downstairs to see what was going on and that’s when he showed me our winning ticket.

“We all just stood there staring, totally stunned. None of us could believe what we were seeing.”

However, it didn’t take long for the family to begin planning what they would do with their winnings.

First on the list is their dream car, a Ford Ranger, and second their longawaited wedding.

“We’ve been engaged for around six years now, but have been so busy with jobs and the kids that our wedding has taken a backseat. So that’s one of the first things we’re going to tick off the list – getting hitched in style.”

Other than that they want to make sure their children and family are set up for life and then help the community.

“The most important thing for us is that our kids are looked after, so that’s our first priority.

“We’re still working out what we’re going to do. The plan is to sit down with a bottle of wine on Friday night and get dreaming.”

The pair have no plans to stop work and will continue living in the same house.

“We want to keep things as normal as possible.”

However, having an extra $22.2 million in the bank will certainly make life a lot easier and they plan to share their good fortune.

“We know how lucky we are to have won, so really want to make sure we help people with our winnings.

“It’s something we’re really excited about.”

Travelling is one thing the family has not had the chance to do so the couple also plan to take their children on a few adventures.

This recent haul is the largest Powerball prize ever won in the South Island and surpasses Ashburton’s last big win of $14.4 million in 2014.

Police spent several hours engaged in a drug bust in Ashburton yesterday.

The operation involved police officers from Christchurch and Ashburton and was centred on a residential address in Davis Crescent.

Up to four police cars were parked outside the property and armed police could be seen standing outside the house from the street.

Christchurch police sergeant Daniel Isherwood said the property search was carried out on a warrant.

Several items of interest were removed from the address, including a sum of cash.

A woman and a man were assisting police with their inquiries, Mr Isherwood said.

Artist brightens up children’s wards

Christchurch artist Rangi Downes called in to Ashburton Hospital to deliver a colourful gift to the community.

He’s taken a break from his usual artistic pursuits to paint bright and cheerful pictures to hang in children’s wards.

Mr Downes’ works are already gracing the walls of Christchurch Hospital and now he and his sidekick Hank van Dongen are on a road trip to Invercargill,

with stops planned in Timaru, Oamaru and Dunedin en route.

He has 14 Disney-themed paintings on board the bus, the first of which was dropped off at Ashburton Hospital yesterday morning.

When that road trip is done and dusted, the couple plan to head over to Greymouth Hospital.

And all done free of charge.

Inspired by the plight of children while walking around the South Island to raise awareness

of child cancer, Mr Downes decided to get out his paints to brighten the walls for those requiring hospital treatment.

While Micky and Minnie Mouse are the subjects of the works destined for children’s wards and the occasional doctor’s surgery, Mr Downes is a fulltime artist who also produces a lot of serious works, in various mediums.

“I did Donald and Daisy Duck for a while but they didn’t have the same attraction,” he said.

“The reaction I’ve had has been incredible – but the idea is to get them into hospitals to make children happy,” he said.

Ashburton Hospital director of nursing Jan McClelland and health services manager Bernie Marra accepted the gift.

While the hospital doesn’t have a dedicated children’s ward Mrs McClelland said it would be appropriate to hang it in the dental services area which children frequently visited.

Mrs Collins said the safety of staff was imperative in light of new health and safety regulations, and the new building offered a much improved environment.

The old building started as a satellite office of Timaru but grew as programmes developed.

“We can be a lot more effective in our work with the new building,” Ms Hampton said.

“It’s great to have the flexibility and the space.”

The new building also has allocated spaces where rehabilitative programmes can be run, which can also be used by outside agencies and community groups to run courses.

The project was two years in the planning and building and staff moved in in February.

The upgrade is part of a national programme of work, which will result in 70 per cent of service centres brought up to standard in terms of service, design and security over the next four years.

With two businesses sold, the Ashburton Trust is halfway through its programme of divesting itself of its businesses.

Negotiations are on-going with a prospective buyer for the Tinwald Tavern and Motels and last week the fourth business, the Hotel Ashburton was listed for sale.

Trust chief executive Robert Reid said the sale of the Tinwald Tavern was quite complex because it involved Liquorland, the Lion Foundation and the TAB as well as the trust.

“It’s a pretty detailed process and it’s a large complex so anyone investing in this will definitely be doing their homework,” he said.

The Somerset Grocer and Speight’s Alehouse both sold earlier this month. The Somerset Grocer changes hands to new owners Mark and Nicky Milmine on April 26 and Speights will be taken over

by Jim and Kerry Lysaght and Tony Potts and Wendy Ritchie on May 2.

Like its other investments, the Hotel Ashburton would be sold on a business only basis; selling the bricks and mortar was not on the trust’s radar, he said.

As cash was generated from the sale of its businesses, the trust would focus on clearing debt. Its revenue stream that will form the basis of its community grants and donations, will then come from rent only.

And that will prompt a board discussion around reformulating its investment strategy and policies, Mr Reid said.

“Once Tinwald is sold we’ll have all up a significant amount of cash and we’ll need to decide how best to invest this for the community.”

Young cooking stars shine at free classes

Delicious aromas could be smelt wafting from Ashburton College’s food and nutrition classroom yesterday.

The smells were coming from Mid Canterbury Rural Women’s Cooking with Students class for Year 4-8 children.

A total of 27 students and 14 mentors from the Anama, Lynnford, Seafield and Winchmore branches filled the classroom for the free class, which was the brainchild of four Rural Women branches.

One of the organisers, Trish Small, said the group made scones for morning tea, pizzas and stir-fry for lunch and rice bubble cupcakes to take home.

The students had an absolutely marvellous time and were able to keep the recipes, she said.

Some of them even asked their mentors if the classes could be offered every day.

The idea was formed following a suggestion for a cooking class at the Youth Council forum in 2014 and Mid Canterbury Rural Women would love to offer it again.

“We thought it was something that we could contribute to.”

The only boys in the class, Kase Evans, 10 and Jared Munn, 9, make a delicious stir-fry at the Mid Canterbury Rural Women’s cooking class.

Mayor Angus McKay’s performance slate has been wiped clean after he was cleared of any wrongdoing around the release of information about a potential water bottling plant being established in Ashburton.

A complaint was laid with council chief executive Andrew Dalziel that stated Mr McKay had breached council’s standing orders when he spoke at an Ashburton Grey Power meeting last year on future development around Ashburton.

Ashburton parents and their youngsters are in for a top-line musical treat tomorrow when Kiwi singer Anika Moa comes to town.

Moa will be performing songs from her latest album, Songs for Bubbas in a concert that can be attended for a gold coin. The show will involve plenty of singing and dancing, and children are encourage to bring tambourines or shakers along. The unidentified complainant said that Mr McKay had released information that should have remained in-committee, but when the complaint was made, he said he was confident he had not talked about a pending land sale or any specific company. He had simply listed a bottling plant among other business options.

An informal hearing was held this week between Mr Dalziel, deputy mayor Darryl Nelson, the complainant and Mr McKay. The issue was resolved and no further action will be taken.

While he was confident a hearing would exonerate him of any wrongdoing, Mr McKay said he was pleased to have the issue re-

solved. “I was disappointed at the time that this happened but I had no doubt the matter would be resolved in my favour,” he said.

Mr McKay said he could not identify his accuser.

The council has a very clear process for code of conduct breaches and this comes into play if any complaint of perceived wrongdoing is made about a mayor or councillor.

Invoking the process, however, is relatively uncommon and a council often goes through a full three year term without any complaints being made.

The process was there to ensure elected members kept within the rules of council, and this is the first time in his local body

career he has been subject to a code of conduct hearing, Mr McKay said.

When the complaint was made, Mr Dalziel said that the mayor’s comments at the Grey Power meeting were in keeping with information that had been available on Environment Canterbury’s website since 2011 as part of the resource consent application to transfer water from the stock water system and return it to the groundwater system in order that ground water could be taken for commercial purposes.

Included in this in paragraph 76 of the application was a specific reference to a proposed water bottling plant.

When the Ashburton Library holds its brick building day tomorrow and while the holiday programme’s three-hour brick building session is designed for children, children’s librarian Adrienne Moody anticipates there will be plenty of adults who are tempted to join in the fun. The event is free and open to children of all ages, but those attending must have an adult with them.

Along with stores around New Zealand and Australia, Ashburton’s Dick Smith has been living on borrowed time for months since the company was placed in receivership. New Zealand’s stores’ closure was announced on February 25 and will close progressively from April 19 until April 29.

Support for water storage plan

A Mid Canterbury irrigation company is moving ahead with its proposal to build a mega irrigation storage pond in the Montalto district.

Rangitata Diversion Race Management Limited (RDRML) staff and consultants have been meeting with landowners in the vicinity of the planned dam to discuss the impacts of construction.

The company unveiled plans for the facility, with the capacity to hold 53 million cubic litres of wa-

ter, in February last year.

RDRML CEO Ben Curry said the response from landowners in the vicinity of the proposed dam had been “extremely positive”.

The dam, which has been on the drawing board for the past five years, would be built in the Montalto district about 10km downstream from the company’s Klondyke irrigation intake on farmland purchased in 2009.

It would cover 200 hectares, dwarfing the nearby Carew storage pond, and draw water from the company’s existing consent and

will be filled when irrigation demand is low.

Twelve landowners responded to an RDRML letter and nine took up the invitation to meet with company representatives to discuss the proposal.

The company will host two public forums later this month providing another opportunity for the affected landowners to meet and for the wider public to learn more about the project and its progress to date.

At this point the main concerns have centred on the noise, dust

and traffic disruption anticipated during the construction phase.

“The company intends to manage these through a variety of tried and tested mitigation techniques,” Mr Curry said.

Measures discussed to mitigate the impact on nearby residents included managing traffic movement, upgrading sections of the road network and dust control sprinklers.

Concerns about the potential for the dam to leak or burst were also addressed in the dialogue with landowners.

“It will be built to withstand a big Canterbury earthquake and we can control the water going in in the event of a leak,” Mr Curry said.

“People we have spoken to are less concerned about a dam break and more so about the construction impact.”

The public will have the opportunity to submit on concerns during the resource consent process later in the year.

Public forums will take place on Wednesday April 27 at the Hinds Hall (11am to 2pm) and later at the Mayfield Hall (4 to 7pm).

Nursing – a career that stays with you for life By sue NewMaN

If you’ve trained as a nurse, it’s a career that stays with you for life, even when you’ve long retired from the wards, say a group of Ashburton women.

June Cunneen, Val Knight and Zella McGirr are the team heading this year’s biennial Ashburton Hospital nurses reunion and they’re keen to contact anyone and everyone who trained or who worked at the hospital as a nurse, enrolled nurse or health assistant, They’re planning a get together they hope will attract everyone from those who were trained at the hospital more than 70 years ago through to new polytech and university graduates in their first job.

While older, retired nurses are usually keen to catch up with their contemporaries at the twoyearly reunion, it’s more difficult to attract younger nurses to join in the celebrations, Mrs Knight said.

However, the nursing world the different generations have experienced might be vastly different, but the nursing bond is intergenerational, she said.

“People from all over the country are coming back and while we’ve sent letters and emails to everyone we have contact details for, there are many more that we’d

The last time the nurses gathered about 100 came and this time they’re hoping to top that number.

While they celebrate by taking photos, cutting cakes, with a church service and later with lunch, the trio said the highlight of the gathering is usually the reminiscing that goes on,

for most of them of a time when nursing training was a very regimented affair.

Until the 1970s nurses trained at Ashburton Hospital and lived on-site in tiny rooms in the nurses’ home.

“And a lot of us remember a time when it was unheard of to come back to nursing after you were married,” Mrs Cunneen said.

She broke the mould and was one of the first to return with a new name and again, after her children were older.

“We didn’t really have much of a chance to get married. They had a lock and a chain on the back of the nurses’ home and we had to cut the bolt off to get out,” Mrs Knight said.

Once curfew arrived, if the nurses wanted fish and chips,

they phoned the taxi service, ordered a meal and had it secretly delivered to the back gate.

Nursing today is a very different world, with training through the university or polytech system and most having very little patient contact time before graduation. In their day, they were on the wards from day one.

Meal times for staff were silver service, nurses stood when higher ranked staff left the dining table and they always stood back to allow nurses with even six months more training pass through doorways first.

Many of the changes have been good, with care now patient centred rather than run according to the clock, Mrs McGirr said.

She recalls her room in the nurses’ hostel – a narrow single bed, one shelf, one set of drawers.

Mrs Cunneen remembers stacking up apple crates and covering them with a piece of material to create a bedside table. And they all recall the bitter cold of a hostel that had very little heating and no floor coverings.

This year’s reunion is planned for May 15 and they hope to watch registrations pour in over the next few weeks. And while they’ll accept people at the last minute, they hope for catering purposes to be able to firm up numbers by May 9.

Young adults get a helping hand A total of $13,000 in cheques and certificates was given away to recipients during an award ceremony hosted last week by the Advance Ashburton Charitable Foundation.

The funds came from the for-

mer Ashburton Jaycee chapter, formed in 1947.

The organisation ceased to operate in 2008 and funds from the sale of its hall were invested with Advance Ashburton as a fund for the development and education

of young adults in the Ashburton community.

In presenting the awards, former Jaycee Geoff Cantrell said he was delighted to see the recipients’ aims furthered by grants from the Jaycee fund.

Council eyes rates changes The way in which the Ashburton District Council charges rates on Lake Hood properties could be about to change.

Currently Lake Hood residents are treated as rural rate payers under the council’s rating policy and are liable for a rural amenity rate rather than an Ashburton amenity rate and Ashburton residential rate. This means the rates liability on an Ashburton urban property is higher per dollar of capital value than a Lake Hood property.

Lake Hood does not get a council refuse or recycling service and property owners do not pay that targeted rate.

Their refuse collection is a private one funded by the Ashburton Aquatic Park Charitable Trust. The council has offered

lake residents a collection service but this was declined.

Residents pay an annual levy to the aquatic park trust of $316 a year.

While it is looking at a range of options around future rating of Lake Hood properties, the council will not make any change without consulting residents.

Also up for consideration by the council is land ownership and responsibility at the lake and reserves and possible future reserves in the area.

Currently the council owns the Stage one lake and roading and footpaths up to stage 12. It also owns 54 hectares of freehold land, reserve land and road reserve with more likely to come as the lake extension develops.

Govt pulls pin on online voting

BY CLAIRE TREVETT The Government has pulled the pin on a trial of online voting in this year’s local body elections, saying it could not guarantee the security of the system in time.

Internal Affairs Minister Louise Upston announced the plan for some councils to trial online voting would not go ahead because time was running out for coun-

cils to prove voting systems addressed concerns about security and vote integrity.

Emergency services were called to a Mangawhai Heads address just after 10am yesterday. St John spokesman Robbie Walker said an ambulance was sent to the scene but the boy was in a critical condition and had to be airlifted to hospital. The boy was flown to Starship Hospital by the Northland Emergency Services Trust Rescue Helicopter.

A statement from police said the boy was playing a game on a private property when the accident happened. “We are doing everything we can to assist the boy’s family during this difficult time.”

Indecent assault Police are after a “short, tubby” middle-aged man who indecently assaulted a teenage girl near a Christchurch school yesterday. Police said at about 11.15am, the 14-year-old was walking outside St Martins School when she noticed an Indian man get out of his car.

He approached her, asking for an address in Glenelg Spur, in the suburb of Hillsborough.

The teen didn’t know the address and apologised to the man, who then hugged her and grabbed her bottom. A few minutes later the teen was approached by the man again. He drove alongside her and stopped in front of her as she walked along Huntsbury Ave. The man got out of his car and indecently assaulted the teen, lifting her dress.

Warning over photos Tourists and travellers stopping for selfies and scenic photos have been urged by police to take caution and “be aware of their surroundings” after an intellectually disabled man died having his photo taken at a Canterbury beauty spot. Daryl Richard Kitto, 47, was under the care of community mental health service Emerge Aotearoa when he slipped and plunged 40m down a cliff at Rakaia Gorge on Sunday afternoon. It is understood the woman taking the photos was one of his carers.

Deadly fall at waterfall A man died at a scenic waterfall in the Waitakere Ranges near Piha yesterday.

Police say they are investigating the death.

The man died at the scene. An emergency call was made at about 3.15pm for an ambulance. St John ambulance northern region communications adviser Robbie Walker said an 18-year-old man had died.

Mr Walker said they were called to the scene just after 3pm. The man’s body was winched from the scene by Auckland’s Westpac Rescue Helicopter. Senior Sergeant Tony Miller said the man was a German tourist who had been exploring the falls with a group of friends when he slipped and fell.

“While they were climbing the falls one of the group has slipped and fallen down the falls and into a pool at the bottom. “He was recovered from the pool and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful,” he said.

The matter has been referred to the coroner.

The Government was open to looking at proposals for online voting in the future.

While local bodies are responsible for running their own elec-

tions, including deciding on a voting system and method, the Government has to decide whether new voting methods meet the requirements of the Local Electoral Act. All councils currently use postal voting.

The Government first agreed to allow councils to trial online voting in December 2014 after a working party found online voting was feasible.

Lotto win – how much is too much?

W

ho won Lotto and what they’ll do with the money is Ashburton’s big guessing game of the moment.

Winning Lotto is a game we’ve all played in the dead of night when a newly-bought Lotto ticket is languishing in our wallets, the numbers unchecked, the possibilities of winning big and having it all are still alive in our minds.

The chances of winning, of course, are incredibly small and yet winning and winning big is just what happened in Ashburton on Saturday. With the spin of eight small balls lives were changed forever.

Whether that change will be for the better or not, only time will tell, but as happens after every big jackpotted win, people ask, how much is too much?

The lure of Lotto is apparently waning. The reality of making an investment that’s largely wasted week after week appears to be losing its allure.

And that could have everything to do with the way the game of chance is structured.

Currently the size of the prize pool is dictated by the amount of money invested and the number of winners in each division.

Perhaps it’s time to look at Lotto Mk II. The game could be similar in structure, but the divisions could be for a set amount each week, one to six and then with the added bonus of Powerball – again, a set amount over six divisions.

And the differences between divisions needs to be shortened to make every win a serious win, with jackpots perhaps limited to $5 million. If that’s not struck, then the top prize pool is divvied up by winners in the next division down.

Five million dollars is more than enough to change a life, but not enough to ruin it.

It’s almost impossible to imagine how you could ever live the life you were probably quite happy living before the big win.

People might say that nothing would change, but the reality is, it would.

To Lotto’s credit, the organisation does everything it can to ensure winners have the best possible advice as they rebuild their lives post win, but at the end of the day what happens and how it happens when the money hits the bank is up to the individuals.

Some will survive and thrive, others crash and burn.

Rubbish On behalf of the Tinwald Dog Walkers’ Group I would like to publicly thank Mrs Peck, an amazing lady, for all she does for the Tinwald community and the environment as a whole.

Mrs Peck can be seen most days of the week picking up rubbish left by others and then removing it for appropriate disposal.

She has been performing this unpaid community service for several years and we feel it is time her efforts were acknowledged.

Without Mrs Peck’s continued efforts, the streets and grassed areas of Tinwald would be far less tidy.

Thanks so very much for your wonderful community service.

Ashburton District Council has maintained its commitment to the unsubsidised roading funding of $650,000 in its draft annual plan, but have had to reduce the amount budgeted for special projects over and above its normal course of business.

Annual plan – We need your input A

fter recent public debate, I want to assure everyone that the council follows the letter of the law when consulting with the people of the Ashburton District and considers the community’s interests in all its decisions.

That being said, we understand there are misconceptions about the transparency of council processes within the community.

With the annual plan at its public consultation phase, it is a good time to come along and give us your views and ask those questions.

Council is required, under the Local Government Act 2002, to consult on its annual plan if there is much variation from its longterm plan. I’m very pleased to say there is a variation this year – and it’s in favour of the ratepayers.

We had projected a rates increase of 4.5 per cent for 2016/17 in our long-term plan 2015-25, but our actual rate increase we have budgeted for in our draft annual plan is 3.3 per cent.

This is because we believe we have found a more efficient way

of achieving the outcomes of the long-term plan.

I must stress that although the projected rates are lower, this is not due to a drop in our levels of service to the community. In fact, the rate increases we have projected in our draft budget are all about maintaining our current levels of service.

Areas such as our domains, parks and reserves have an increase in the amount budgeted – this isn’t for any new project as such, but it’s because over the years council has acquired more and more land and just absorbed the cost of maintaining that land within our overheads.

This year we’ve remedied that to show the true cost of the work required to provide such high quality parks and open spaces

which always feature highly in our feedback as being of great value to the community.

Our EA Networks Centre has exceeded its projected patronage, but the increased revenue from fees, etc, have not offset the additional costs in electricity, maintenance, and wear and tear on equipment from such high use. Hence we have projected an increase in operating costs within the draft budget to account for these factors.

Finally, our last major variation is within the roading budget. Our application for funding for special projects from NZTA was not successful, so what we projected for NZTA funding in our longterm plan has not eventuated.

We have maintained our commitment to the unsubsidised roading funding of $650,000 in our draft annual plan, but have had to reduce the amount budgeted for special projects over and above our normal course of business.

Over the next few weeks we will be taking our draft annual plan consultation out to the commu-

nity through a series of meetings.

We also have our draft Open Spaces Strategy and our draft Waste Minimisation and Management Plan out for consultation.

I invite members of the public to come to one of our public meetings to discuss ideas and issues with my elected colleagues.

EU ‘killing by neglect’

BY RICK NOACK Hundreds of refugees are believed to have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea trying to reach Europe, one year after a similar tragedy, Italy’s president confirmed yesterday.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella said during a prize ceremony in Rome yesterday that Europe faced “yet another tragedy in the Mediterranean in which, it seems, several hundred people have died.”

His comments are the first official remarks on a recent incident that had previously been denied by Italian authorities.

Italy’s foreign minister also confirmed the tragedy, but said that details were still scarce.

“What is sure is that we are again with a tragedy in the Mediterranean, exactly one year after the tragedy we had . . . in Libyan waters,” Italian foreign minister Paolo Gentiloni was quoted as saying by Reuters.

In April 2015, more than 700 refugees died in a similar incident when their boat sank on the way to Italy.

The incident caused an international outcry and may have helped to convince European politicians like German Chancellor Angela Merkel to adopt a more refugee-friendly

policy approach last year.

Gentiloni said yesterday that more European collaboration was needed.

“This is another strong reason for Europe to commit itself not to build walls,” he said.

Previously, the Somali ambassador to Egypt had told BBC Arabic that up to 400 refugees travelling on four boats might have died.

According to the ambassador, the victims are believed to have come from Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia.

The refugees who drowned are believed to have travelled on the central Mediterranean route which is used to reach Italy.

A recent report released by several British universities alleges that European governments are to blame for some of the deaths that have occurred in the Mediterranean Sea over the last years.

Europe’s rescue mission was downsized almost two years ago – leading to at least 1500 deaths directly related to the

measure, the report says.

The British study accuses the European Union of “killing by neglect”.

More sea arrivals coming from North Africa are expected on Europe’s southern shores in the coming months, as they usually increase during the summer.

Moreover, recent measures taken to stop migrants from entering Europe from Turkey could further contribute to the influx of refugees from the south.

Death toll expected to rise considerably Ecuador’s president predicted a “considerable” rise in the death toll from a massive earthquake whose tally already included at least 350 lives amid flattened villages along the country’s Pacific coast.

President Rafael Correa tried to lift spirits by saying the country will overcome “these very difficult moments” but also added a sobering message that the full extent of Saturday’s 7.8-magnitude quake was still unknown.

The death toll would “surely rise, and in a considerable way,” Correa said as rescue teams struggled to reach the quake zone, where some areas were cut off by landslides and buckled roads.

Ecuador’s security minister, Cesar Navas, told the Teleamazonas channel that the death count had reached at least 350.

“It was only after the earthquake finished that we could get out of the house,” said Angelica Valencia, 30, clutching a gallon of water and surrounded by her three young children.

“It was terrifying, and now we’re sleeping on the street.”

Rich Chinese retiring to NZ prise and Alibaba say they have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at developing opportunities for Kiwi businesses wanting to enter China’s consumer market, by “leveraging services and platforms offered by Alibaba’s ecosystem”.

The signing ceremony was witnessed in Beijing by Prime Minister John Key and Ma, who is the chairman and also founded the e-commerce giant and is one of China’s richest men.

Key said that selling into China could be quite daunting for New Zealand businesses but that Alibaba gave “connectivity” from local producers to Chinese consumers.

The question is, will the vote cause a short-term impact for investors or will there be long-term implications?

If the resulting vote is to remain connected to the EU all prior concerns will dissipate and investors will return to the markets in a positive mood. However, a vote to uncouple from the EU will see a period of uncertainty as the legal, financial, and social ramifications are assessed.

Re-writing laws and the implementation of those laws could take up to five years.

In our opinion, in the middle of

any event, the unknown outcomes are far worse than reality.

Investment markets have been through many cycles and disruptions; the global financial crisis, Iraq war, Gulf war, bird flu, technology bubble, black Monday 1987, oil crisis 1973 and so on.

An investor’s focus should be on the long-term goals and purpose of the portfolio as a whole.

For most investors, the goal is to use their capital in retirement to provide an income during their 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond.

While the short term will undoubtedly be volatile, our focus is on the long term, where investing in good quality companies with strong businesses will stand the test of time.

Authors suffer ‘colossal loss’

n June 23, voters in the United Kingdom will decide whether to remain part of the European Union or withdraw from it.

The possibility of a British EU exit – often shortened to “Brexit” – is, according to a survey conducted by Deloitte of 120 chief financial officers at major UK companies, considered a greater risk to their business than any other threat. Investors with international holdings, such as international fund managers and KiwiSaver schemes, will be keeping a close eye on the outcome of this event.

Investors and investment markets alike prefer stable environments enabling investors to make informed investment decisions and act with confidence. However ,when potential disruption arises, such as a vote to exit from a long-standing arrangement, the markets can enter a period of volatility until the disruption clears.

The legal fight over Google’s effort to create a digital library of millions of books is finally over.

The Supreme Court yesterday declined to hear a challenge from authors who had argued that the tech giant’s project was a “brazen violation of copyright law” – effectively ending the decade-long legal battle in Google’s favour.

China’s richest man, Alibaba online shopping founder Jack Ma, says he’d like to buy a home in New Zealand.

Ma – who’s worth around $50 billion – met with John Key in Beijing yesterday.

Standing alongside the Prime Minister, he heaped praise on the country, which he says is loved by many Chinese.

Ma says at least 20 of his colleagues in their 40s have retired to New Zealand.

He says they all say it’s the people and the beauty of the country that attracted them.

The comments come as New Zealand trade officials have signed a deal with Ma’s Alibaba Group, which is the world’s biggest online marketplace.

2T butter 300g Tegel Lean & Lite Skinless Breast Fillets, chopped finely 1 large onion, chopped 2C chicken stock 2 medium potatoes, chopped 1 410g can whole kernel sweetcorn, drained 2T cornflour 2C milk Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2T chopped parsley

■ Heat the butter in a large saucepan.

Add the chicken and cook over medium heat until it is golden. Remove from the pan and set aside.

■ Add the onion to the saucepan and cook for three to four minutes. Add the chicken stock and potatoes, cover and simmer for 15 minutes.

■ Mix the cornflour with a small amount of the milk, then stir in the remaining milk. Add to the soup mixture with the sweetcorn and chicken.

■ Reheat, stirring constantly, until the soup thickens. Season with salt and pepper and stir in the parsley. Add a little more milk if it is too thick.

■ Serve immediately.

Eggs top the list for versatility E

ggs are one of the most under-rated foods.

Over the years they’ve gone in and out of favour according to their perceived health benefits or not, but the one thing that has not changed is that the egg is indisputably one of the few foods that ticks all the boxes for versatility and for its ability to be a complete meal.

And eggs don’t have to be a breakfast or lunch meal only; they’re equally at home in dozens of different guises as an integral part of dinner.

3 minutes until the eggs are just cooked.

■ Serve sprinkled with the coriander or parsley ■ Have plenty of warm breads to mop up the sauce.

■ Combine all salsa ingredients and serve on the side.

Curried eggs with salsa 500 grams pumpkin, peeled and deseeded 1 small to medium-sized aubergine, diced 2T curry paste 2C chicken or vegetable stock 6 eggs 1/2 C deseeded fresh tomatoes 1/4 C fresh coriander, chopped Salsa 1 avocado, diced 1/2 small red onion, peeled and finely diced 1 red chilli, deseeded and chopped 1-2 limes, zest and juice 1 1/2 T each freshly chopped mint and coriander

Lamb meatballs with eggs 500g lamb, finely minced 1 medium onion, finely chopped 3T finely chopped parsley 1/4 t cayenne pepper Salt and pepper 2T olive oil for frying Sauce 2T olive oil 2 medium onions, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 2 cans tomatoes (400g), drained and chopped 1t cumin powder 1t cinnamon 1/2 t cayenne pepper Salt and pepper 500ml water

1/3 C parsley leaves, finely chopped 1/3 C coriander leaves, finely chopped 6 eggs ■ To make the meatballs, combine the ingredients and, using wet hands, form the mixture into walnut-sized balls. Heat the oil and brown the meatballs all over.

Drain well on paper towels.

■ Sauce: Heat the oil in a heavybased casserole dish and lightly saute the onion and garlic until translucent.

■ Add the remaining ingredients, except the water, fresh herbs and eggs, and stir well.

■ Then stir in the water and bring to the boil.

■ Lower the heat and simmer the sauce, uncovered, for about 30 minutes or until it has reduced to a very thick gravy.

■ Add the meatballs to the sauce and continue cooking for a further eight minutes.

■ Carefully break the whole eggs into the sauce, cover with a lid and cook until the eggs are just set.

■ Serve immediately topped with chopped herbs.

■ Serve with crusty bread, plain couscous and yoghurt.

■ For a more piquant dish, add a finely chopped chilli while sauteing the onion and garlic.

Egg and potato salad with curry dressing 450g new potatoes, halved 225g cauliflower 100g whole green beans 4 eggs 1 red onion, sliced 4 fresh tomatoes, quartered 1 (420g) can chickpeas, drained Dressing 1T mayonnaise Rind and juice of 1 lime 3T chopped fresh coriander 1T mango chut-

ney 1T medium curry paste Naan bread to serve ■ Place the potatoes in a large pan of water, cover and bring to the boil, simmer for five minutes.

■ Meanwhile, place the eggs in a medium pan, cover with cold water and bring to the boil.

■ Simmer for six minutes, then drain.

■ Shell eggs and cut into quarters.

■ Add cauliflower and beans to the potato pan and cook for five minutes or until tender.

■ Drain and rinse in cold water until cold.

■ Place in a large salad bowl; add the eggs, onion, tomatoes and chickpeas.

■ Whisk all the dressing ingredients together with 3T water.

■ Dress immediately before serving.

■ Serve with naan bread.

Egg and sausage bake 12 eggs, beaten 750g beef sausage, casings removed 500g grated cheddar cheese, divided 7 slices white bread, torn into pieces ■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Brown ground sausage in a large frypan over medium-high heat.

■ Drain off grease and set aside to cool.

■ Pour the eggs into a lightly greased 20x30cm baking dish.

■ In a separate large bowl combine the sausage, bread and 300g of the cheese.

■ Mix well and pour this into the egg mixture.

■ Top with the remaining cheese and cover with foil.

■ Bake for 15 minutes, uncover and bake until casserole is golden brown and bubbly.

■ Cut the pumpkin into 2cm pieces and cook gently in a frying pan in a little oil until golden.

■ Add the aubergine and cook with the pumpkin until softened.

■ Stir in the curry paste, stock and tomatoes and simmer for 12-15 minutes until thick and the vegetables tender.

■ Break the eggs into the frying pan, cover and cook for about

HMS Pinafore sailing our way G

ilbert and Sullivan’s classic musical comedy HMS Pinafore will be sailing into Ashburton on Tuesday next week and Ashburton’s Tainui Kuru is among cast members.

The Nasda graduate and former Ashburton College head boy is to play Ralph Rackstraw, starring alongside theatre veteran George Henare as Sir Joseph Porter, Helen Medlyn as Buttercup, Tizane McEvoy as Josephine and Paul Barrett as Captain Corcoran.

Produced by Ben McDonald and directed by Geraldine Brophy, HMS Pinafore is playing in 21 venues as it makes its way around New Zealand.

The show’s extraordinary popularity in Britain, America and elsewhere was followed by the similar success of a series of Gilbert and Sullivan works, including The Pirates of Pen-

zance and The Mikado.

Their works, later known as the Savoy operas, dominated the musical stage on both sides of the Atlantic for more than a decade and continue to be performed today.

The structure and style of these shows, particularly Pinafore, were much copied and contributed significantly to the development of modern musical theatre.

A satirical tale of forbidden love and shocking revelations of class and identity, HMS Pinafore is one of the most enduringly popular of Gilbert and Sullivan’s great comic creations, with songs including Little Buttercup and He is an Englishman.

Set aboard the ship HMS Pinafore, the captain’s daughter, Josephine, is in love with a lowerclass sailor, Ralph Rackstraw, despite her father wanting her to

marry Sir Joseph Porter, the First Lord of the Admiralty.

She abides by her father’s wishes … at first.

Soon Sir Joseph’s advocacy of the equality of humankind encourages Ralph and Josephine to overturn conventional social order.

They declare their love for each other and eventually plan to elope.

The captain discovers this plan, but, as in many of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, a surprise disclosure changes things dramatically near the end of the story.

Drawing on several of his earlier Bab Ballad poems, Gilbert imbued this plot with mirth and silliness.

The show’s humour focuses on love between members of different social classes and lam-

poons the British class system in general. The script also pokes good-natured fun at patriotism, party politics, the Royal Navy and the rise of unqualified people to positions of authority.

The title of the piece comically applies the name of a garment for girls and women, a pinafore, to the fearsome symbol of a naval warship.

Mr McDonald said he was proud of the show.

“It’s a really fresh and clever production of an old favourite and Geraldine and the team have made an excellent job of making it relevant to 2016 without messing with the time period where it is set.

“The vocal work is excellent,” Mr McDonald said.

To Marty Godwin there’s no such thing as a person with a disability; he sees a person who, with a little assistance, can live a full and rewarding life.

With 28 years experience as a nurse behind him, the ex-Scot said he knew there was a wide range of equipment available in hospitals for people who were physically disabled – short or long-term, but that people outside the hospital system were usually unaware that there were aids available that would give them a much better quality of life.

From there, his company Mobility Solutions was born.

“I’d always had this in my head, that it would be a good idea if you could get the equipment you needed today rather than having to get an assessment”.

That was in 2010 when he established his Timaru store and last month he and business partner Sharon Arnold set up a second base in Ashburton. He’s now in the process of creating a mini-home inside the Netherby Shopping Centre store that allows people to test a variety of adaptive aids in real life settings – from kitchen to living room, bathroom to the street.

“We decided to set up in Ashburton because we were already coming up weekly to do accessible ACC and enable Ministry of Health work and

people were also coming to Timaru to buy or hire.”

The range of equipment that will make life easier for people with a wide range of mobility issues is growing and Marty says he can access virtually anything that’s on the market. If it’s not in store, then he’ll get it.

One of his biggest sellers is mobility scooters and at any time he has around 15 models in stock.

“Mobility scooters can change people’s lives but there’s a lot more to these than just jumping on and driving away. We try to fit people to a model that will work for them, it’s all about meeting a person’s needs.”

Scooters are delivered to a buyer’s home and Marty spends time with the new owner ensuring they can ride safely.

“We’re not just here to sell a scooter, we want to build up relationships with people to establish trust.”

He also offers in-house scooter servicing and depending on need, this should be done annually, he said.

Mobility aids don’t stop with scooters. Marty also stocks wheelchairs and walking frames.

The range of adaptive aids is huge; if it’s on the market it’s likely to be in-store, if it’s not he’ll hunt it down – or make it himself.

Pregnant women and people with sport injuries will also benefit.

He’s also determined to change attitudes around disability, preferring to call his products adaptive aids.

“Disability aids has a stigma.

We’re trying to change mind sets.

Our aids are about improving quality of life by building up fitness and confidence. There’s an adaptive aid for every situation,” he said.

Through his business, Marty says he’s watched people who lose confidence as they struggle to accomplish everyday tasks, regain both mobility and confidence once they have the appropriate aids.

“One of the most frequent comments I get is that whatever they’ve bought has changed their life.” Mobility Solutions is based in the Netherby Shopping Centre and while the business is currently open from 9am – 4.30pm each day, with an additional staff member joining the team, shop hours will be longer.

Local bragging rights will be up for grabs when Wakanui Blue lock horns with Wakanui Black at the Ashburton Hockey Turf tomorrow evening.

Both teams are yet to register a win this season, with Blue falling 9-0 to pace setters Cambridge followed by a 3-1 loss to Northern Hearts, while Black were turned over 5-4 by Tainui and then received a 9-0 thumping from Cambridge.

Wakanui Blue captain Sam Moore will be without the services of fullback Bradley Going, who played an instrumental role in his side’s only goal last week against Hearts.

Moore will also be keeping a close eye on Sam Bennett, and is expecting a tightly contested encounter.

“I think both teams are still pretty rusty at this stage, neither have had much time together,” he said.

“Sam Bennett is pretty sharp.

“I have to mark him and he’s quicker than me, and he’s very skilful in possession.”

Wakanui Black skipper Mitch Moore will have a full complement to choose from, but is well aware of the threat tomorrow’s opponents boast at both ends of the turf.

“I think it’ll be a good old grudge match,” he said. “Sam (Moore), he’s got good defence, and Hayden Sinclair, he’s going to be hard to stop, he’s got a lot of skill and if he’s on song he’ll be the one to go through us.”

Enhancing Maori rugby skills

Ten local rugby players attended the E Tu Toa under-18 New Zealand Maori Programme held at Hillmorton High School in Christchurch last weekend.

tunities rugby can provide young players on and off the paddock.

“They cover everything from Mau rakau (a martial art based on traditional Maori weapons), Tikanga, which is our protocols and customs on a Marae and Te Reo, which is the language,” said Tahuri.

“Then Whakapapa, which is our geology and how we connect to each other through our tribal routes.”

The programme’s guest speakers included Taranaki, Crusaders and Maori All Blacks wing Sean Wainui and former New Zealand sevens forward Dallas Seymour.

Tahuri said the involvement of former and current Maori players emphasised to the boys the pathways to success on offer.

“We’re using this as tool to keep these guys on the straight and narrow and involved,” he said.

“Past players, who have represented New Zealand, New Zealand Maori or played Super Rugby, now have established careers in other fields, we were able to bring those guys in as well.”

Players from the camp will now be selected to represent Te Waipounamu South Island Maori regions at the 2016 National NZRU Maori training camp in Rotorua in July.
