Infected farms set to surge By Tim Cronshaw

Mid Canterbury farmers are worried they will bear the brunt of a big spike in farm numbers suspected of being infected with mycoplasma bovis as a result of increased surveillance. The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) expects 250 farmers will receive notices of direction restricting animal movement and 10-12 per cent of them will result in their properties ending up with the cattle disease. Over the next few weeks about 300 farmers will be contacted by ministry officers as a result of carrying high-risk animals. About two-thirds of the properties are beef farms and the rest are dairy operations. This will be a blow for Ashburton district farmers who had hoped the ministry was getting on top of the cattle disease. At the last count they had already accounted for about 40 per cent of the 161 properties confirmed positive with M. bovis. MPI said it was increasing its disease programme activity in the lead up to autumn and winter stock movements to limit the risk of M. bovis spreading and to give farmers as much certainty as possible heading into a busy farming period. Programme director Geoff Gwyn said more properties than usual could be expected to be placed under movement restrictions. “This is happening in a short period because of increased surveillance late last year, which has resulted in a peak in the number of high-risk properties that we have identified, and the desire to get ahead of the curve before autumn and winter stock movements get into full swing.’’ He said about 300 farmers would be contacted as a priority over the next few weeks who had high-risk animals move onto their property. “We would expect 250 of those to have notice of direction movement controls placed on them

immediately and, following testing, that 10 per cent to 12 per cent may become confirmed properties.” A MPI spokeswoman said a full regional breakdown had yet to be completed and at this stage about three-quarters of the 300 high priority farmers were thought to be in the South Island. Former MBovis Affected Farmers Support Group spokesman Duncan Barr said the likely increase of properties under movement controls was a huge concern because it was a “big jump’’. “We have been led to believe

things were under control but this isn’t under control, it’s rampant. Releasing this in one big hit [makes you wonder if this a deliberate ploy, but what for we don’t know. They would have been working on this for weeks if not months.’’ He said it was disappointing that the spike in numbers was not released during farmer meetings just completed and came out just before a long Easter break. Farmers would be worried that MPI had enough staff to carry out disease tracing, he said. Gwyn said the owners of about
800 properties would also be contacted about very low-risk animal movements in the work to ring fence the spread of M. bovis. They were considered low-risk and might have sent an animal to another property that had become infected. Less than 0.4 per cent of them were expected to be confirmed with the disease. Gwyn said the surge in property numbers did not represent increased spread of the disease or a change in confidence that eradication would be achieved. “To achieve eradication it is vital that we prevent the move-
ment of high-risk animals before [Gypsy Day] and winter grazing movements. … We know hearing that your farm is at risk is distressing for any farmer, we will ensure they are well supported through the process.” He said MPI believed there was another year of intensive surveillance, movement controls, and depopulation before the bulk of the eradication effort was completed. “We are now entering a period where we will have to look at a greater number of farms to find a diminishing number of confirmed properties.

Methven residents walk to mark Jesus’ sacrifice A large number of Methven locals took to the streets in the annual Walk of the Witness event around the streets yesterday morning. An annual event, held on Good Friday each year in Methven, the Walk of the Witness sees members of the Methven Combined Churches walk their way around the town’s churches carrying a wooden cross. The walk is a celebration of the crucifixion where Jesus Christ died and begins the weekend-long story, ending on Sunday with a celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Yesterday’s walk began outside the All Saints Anglican Church before making its way toward the Mt Hutt Elim Church. Next stop on the journey was the Presbyterian Church on South Belt before ending at the Holy Name Catholic Church next to Our Lady of the Snows School near the outskirts of Methven. Yesterday the first honour of carrying the cross was given to Graham Van Duinen, a member of the Anglican Church. The cross holds significant meaning as it was made by the late Brian O’Hara. Almost all of those who took part in yesterday’s proceedings will be back at churches tomorrow when Christians celebrate
the resurrection of their saviour. Churches across the Ashburton District will be flooded with peo-
ple as services in all places of worship roll on throughout the entire day.

National backs Pike re-entry NZME The National Party is accepting advice that the Pike River re-entry can now be done safely, taking politics off the table on an issue that has been a bitter political battleground. Yesterday, the party’s Pike River recovery spokesman, Mark Mitchell, met with the Families Reference Group — which represents more than 80 per cent of Pike River victims’ families — and told them National supported the re-entry plan. Afterwards, Mitchell told the Herald the party’s position had

always backed a re-entry as long as it could be done safely, but it is the first time National has told the families’ group it backs the plan. “We would have gone into the drift but the advice was that it was too dangerous,” Mitchell said. “The advice now is that we can get in there and we completely support that.” Sonya Rockhouse, who lost her son Ben in the 2010 tragedy, welcomed the support. “Even though it’s taken so long, it’s good to know they’ve swung in behind us getting truth and
justice. “What’s really great is this means it’s the end of all the politics and now it’s about everybody doing the right thing by our men.” The Coalition Government and the Opposition have long fought over the viability of re-entering the mine’s drift. The Labour-New Zealand First coalition agreement said they would “commit to re-entry to Pike River”, while National has always said it was too dangerous to do so. The families’ group has not been shy about expressing its disappointment with the previ-
ous Government, not only about re-entry but also for feeling at arms’ length from information about the mine and the decision-making process. On the tragedy’s eighth anniversary last year, just days after the Government had announced that re-entry would proceed, the families were angered when National leader Simon Bridges said an apology wasn’t necessary. Bridges said at the time that the legacy of the 29 men who died had been honoured by the Royal Commission of Inquiry and changes to the health and safety laws.
Anna Osborne, who lost her husband Milton in the 2010 tragedy, told the Herald this week: “It’s the will of the Government to help. There was no will in the past from the previous Government.” But after the meeting with Mitchell, the families’ group was buoyed by National’s support. Mitchell said the families shared with him their view of the previous Government’s failure. “I’m not going to comment on the past. “All l’m going to do is focus on the future. I’m really pleased they are engaging in a process that’s positive for them.” – NZME

Variety Theatre Ashburton’s Sister Act is drawing male lead Matt Williams into new territory. The 27-year-old has never played a villain before. “It’s been an enjoyable experience getting to ham up a character that’s so awful and really go with it,” he said. Rehearsals are under way for the show, to stage next month. At auditions, Williams had been trying out for the role of Eddie the police officer, when the directors eyed him up for the lead role of Curtis. Williams went with their suggestion and ended up being successful in getting the part. Curtis is the leader of a brutal gang in Philadelphia and the plot follows him trying to hunt down his ex-mistress after she witnesses him murder a fellow gang member. “Finding a path to pursue a character where you have to be a villain is a bit of a change and a bit of a challenge, but it’s really enjoyable,” Williams said. “There’s plenty of work with Curtis because he’s so horrible, because he has such motive to find Deloris, so you can really act with passion and vengeance and will, there’s a lot of driving force with that character.” There were also positive aspects

Ashburton’s top cop is urging people to follow the online processes that have been put in place following the significant reforms to the New Zealand Arms Act. “The best advice I can give is for people to register their firearms online with us so we can avoid people just rolling up to the front counter with all their firearms,”
senior sergeant Matt Emery said. “The best thing to do is to jump online and register and tell us you’ve got them and then Police will be in contact at a later date.” Emery said some people had already surrendered their firearms at the Ashburton Police Station, but the best possible way for it to be done was for police to collect the firearms. Details around a buyback policy
for the previously legal weapons are yet to be finalised, and police will announce those details once they are available, deputy commissioner Michael Clement said. “We know people are very interested in that part of the process. Only the newly-prohibited items will be eligible for buyback,” he said. “This is about keeping our communities safe from potential

Ashburton’s district councillors have been put on notice over their use of social media. With a new communications policy signed off at Thursday’s district council meeting, chief executive Hamish Riach made it clear that a line needed to be drawn between their comments made as councillors and their comments as individuals. “We must draw a distinction between the two. It’s implicit that if you’re on your own councillor page you are speaking as the council, but you’re entitled to have a private page and to have your private point of view,” Riach said. Councillors needed to be quite clear about what they said and where, he said. Elected members are not permitted to post comments under council posts and the council will not tag individual elected members’ posts, however, councillors are encouraged to share council’s content on their own personal accounts. The council had no responsibility for posting or monitoring elected members’ private sites, Riach said.

Trust returns $160k to community By Sue Newman

More than 3000 children around the Ashburton District will receive a visit from Harold and his team of Life Education educators this year thanks to a $28,890 grant. In the latest round of grants from the Ashburon Trust Lion Foundation, Life Education was granted money that will enable the long-running programme to spread its net across the district’s primary and intermediate schools over the coming months. The Life Education programme uses a mobile classroom and educators to teach children to make choices taking care of themselves, each other and their communities. Grants committee chair Roger Paterson said the work Life Education did was incredibly valuable in helping children learn about their bodies, about friendships and about nutrition as well as helpful and harmful substances. “This organisation positively influences a large number of children in our district and we are very pleased to support this programme for the year ahead,” he said. The grant was part of the March grant round by the foundation’s regional grants committee. In March, grants totalling more than $160,000 were made. The largest of these was to the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union, who received $60,000 for rugby development programmes. Other recipients were Ashburton Variety Theatre, $30,000 to stage Sister Act; Ashburton Collegiate RFC, $20,000 for mower
and operational costs; Ashburton Car Club, $8000 for building upgrade; Ashburton Housing and Support Trust, $8506 for heat pumps and insulation; Hakatere Ceramics and Pottery, $7800 for operational costs and K2 Youth Development Trust, $5800 for

Big boost for young netballers The third season of the ANZ Premiership has taken off and with the community netball season also getting under way, ANZ is asking Ashburton netballers what difference having them on their team would make. All successful teams have an x-factor, an element that gives them the edge. It could be mental toughness, a world-class impact player or the very best facilities, and the key sponsor of netball in New Zealand is calling for applications from aspiring netballers and fans in Ashburton, and asking what their netball dreams look like. Celebrating 50 years of T
his is a big year for the Ashburton Branch of the Vintage Car Club. It’s turning 50 and celebrating this special milestone by hosting the National South Island Easter Rally. Around 360 people from all over New Zealand as well as England and Australia are taking part in 172 vehicles. The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand was originally formed in 1946 by a group of nine young Canterbury University students, one of whom, the late Clem McLachlan, lived in this district. It started out as the Vintage Vehicles Association and covered all vehicles up to 1927. In August 1948 the name was changed to The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand. In the mid-1950s other groups began forming around New Zealand and the Vintage Car Club became an incorporated society, changing its constitution to allow for the formation of branches of the club. Today with 36 branches it is one of the largest motoring clubs in New Zealand Over 8000 members and many thousands of vehicles and motorcycles are listed on the club’s database. The club aims to offer something for everyone by running a variety of events for members: tar seal trundles, rural runs, hill climbs, swapmeets and speed events as well as regular club evenings for a yarn with like-minded enthusiasts. Membership is not dependent on owning a vintage vehicle and the club caters for all types of cars, motorcycles, commercial and military vehicles which are over 30 years old and are in compliance with VCC period category requirements. Club-eligible vehicles include Veteran, Vintage, Post War, Post 1960, Post 1980, Commercial, Motorcycle and Historic Racing vehicles. Right from the beginning members have shared a common appreciation for the fascination of age and the individuality and the functional elegance of vehicles from a by-gone era. A small group of Ashburton enthusiasts, some of whom belonged to the Christchurch branch, formed a sub-branch in Ashburton. Full branch status was dependent on having a membership of 30. Following a membership drive led by members, including the late Ralph Crum, that number was achieved in 1969 and the local branch was established. Since then membership has risen to almost 200 and the Ashburton branch has a long list of achievements including development of their club rooms, parts shed and museum at Maronan Road. Ron Winchester was already a Canterbury member so when the Ashburton branch was formed he transferred his membership. Along with other locals Ron Galletly, Les Nell and Derek Prebble, Ron has been awarded a 50 year membership badge. A similar badge was awarded posthumously to Jocelyn Hosken last year and the late Clem McLachlan had been awarded a 50 year membership badge. Like others who were involved when the branch was formed Ron Winchester has wonderful memories of the early days. He says the enthusiasm of members, their determination to establish a successful branch combined with lots of fun laid a great foundation for the future. Club president Trevor Begg agreed with Winchester. “The Ashburton branch is what it is today because of the efforts of early members and the contribution of those who have followed them,” he said. “Hosting the National South Island Easter Rally is a great way to celebrate the Ashburton branch 50th anniversary.”

Organising the rally Planning for the 2019 National South Island Easter Rally began quite a long while ago when an organising committee was established. Begg said a very enthusiastic group have followed the procedures laid down for a national rally and have come up with a full and interesting programme.
Three rally routes have been mapped out. Entrants can choose to follow either a short, medium or long rally route. Taking part As the vintage car evolved it wisely amended its rules around vehicle classifications. Vehicles manufactured before December 31, 1918 will always be classified as veterans just as those built between 1919 and 1931 will be classed as vintage vehicles. But as time went on the need to bring in other classifications was recognised and these days there are other qualifying periods the latest being vehicles which are over 30 years old. Interestingly some of the founding members were driving vehicles which were younger than 30 when they established the Vintage Car Club. Local members Cliff and Cindy Begg are among those entered for the rally. The Beggs have several vehicles with different classifications. They are particularly interested in agri-

Finished in green with tan leather upholstery it’s a stunning car. The Beggs will be taking part in the rally in the Rover. They’ve owned the Rover for around 10 years. Cindy Begg says it was an interesting purchase, the Beggs went to a sale for Cliff to look at a McCormick Deering WD6 tractor. The Rover was included in the same sale. Cindy saw it and decided she liked it. So she said to Cliff “you can have the tractor if I can have the Rover”. Needless to say they came home with both.
Cutting the cake A birthday party, especially a 50th, wouldn’t be the same without a cake. The Ashburton branch has a birthday cake and with around 360 people helping them celebrate it’s a big one. In fact, the club thinks it will take two people to cut it, so Diane Quarrie and Diane Ross, two stalwarts of vintage motoring have that honour. Diane Quarrie is the National President of the Vintage Car Club, she and her husband Geoff will be on the rally. Intrigued that South Island rallies are as
she puts it “bucking the trend and attracting large numbers”, Diane is looking forward to being in Ashburton. The other cake cutting Diane – Diane Ross – is patron of the Ashburton branch of the Vintage Car Club. She and husband Rob have, over many years, made a huge contribution to the Vintage Car Club locally and beyond. Diane is well known for her regular, interesting and popular Brass Notes column in Beaded Wheels, the Vintage Car Club’s official magazine.
Heavily involved in the community Right from the start the Ashburton Branch of the Vintage Car Club has been involved with community events like parades, providing transport and with running the hugely popular annual swapmeet. The branch has always supported Wheels Week and Daffodil Day events. Support from the community has always been appreciated by the branch and to acknowledge this a massive car display featur-
ing all the cars taking part in the rally and other vehicles as well is being staged at the Ashburton Racecourse between 10am and 2pm on Easter Sunday. Everyone is welcome to come along and bring their vehicle for display. It will be a great opportunity to mingle with owners and look at some pretty special vehicles. Admission is by gold coin donation to the scouts.

Short-circuit likely fire cause AP Paris police investigators think an electrical short-circuit most likely caused the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral, a police official said yesterday, as France paid a daylong tribute to the firefighters who saved the world-renowned landmark. A judicial police official said investigators made an initial assessment of the cathedral but didn’t have a green light to search Notre Dame’s charred interior because of ongoing safety hazards. The cathedral’s fragile walls were being shored up with wooden planks, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorised to speak by name about an ongoing investigation. Investigators so far believe the fire was accidental, and are questioning both cathedral staff and workers who were carrying out renovations. Some 40 people had been questioned by yesterday, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office. The police official would not comment on an unsourced report in Le Parisian newspaper that investigators are looking at whether the fire could have been linked to a computer glitch or the temporary elevators used in the renovation work, among other things. The prosecutor’s office said only that “all leads must be explored.” Since the cathedral will be closed to the public for years, the rector of the Catholic parish that worships there has proposed building a temporary structure on the plaza in front of the Gothic-era landmark, and City Hall gave its approval Thursday “subject to technical restraints.” “The rector has no cathedral for the moment. .... But I’m going to try to invent something,” Bishop Patrick Chauvet said. A crypt containing vestiges dating from antiquity is located under the vast esplanade. President Emmanuel Macron has said he wants Notre Dame to be restored in five years, in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics,
Sudan in transition The US State Department has called on Sudan’s military to step aside and make way for a peaceful civilian-led transition, as protesters in Khartoum kept up demands for the country’s transitional military council to hand over power to civilians. “The will of the Sudanese people is clear: it is time to move toward a transitional government that is inclusive and respectful of human rights and the rule of law,” department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said. The statement appeared to clarify the US position toward the military council’s hold on the country, after Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was ousted on April 11 after weeks of mass protests.

worst has been avoided.” The cathedral’s lead roof and its soaring spire were destroyed, but Notre Dame’s iconic bell towers, rose windows, organ and precious artworks were saved. Macron said the firefighters will receive an Honor Medal for their courage and devotion. Paris City Hall also held a ceremony in the firefighters’ honor Thursday afternoon, with a Bach violin concert, two giant banners strung from the monumental city headquarters and readings from Victor Hugo’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Remarkably, no one was killed in the blaze that broke out as the cathedral was in the initial stages of a lengthy restoration.
Dingo bites toddler’s neck, drags him away A toddler has been airlifted to a Brisbane hospital with a fractured skull and cuts to his head and neck after his father snatched the boy from a dingo’s jaws on Queensland’s Fraser Island. The family were camping in a remote area of the island in the state’s southeast on Thursday night when a dingo entered their

Paramedic Ben Du Toit says the dingo bit the toddler’s neck and began dragging him away into the bush. “The parents awoke with the toddler crying and heard the crying getting further away from the campervan,” Du Toit said. The boy’s father ran outside and fought off several dingoes
to rescue his son from the dog’s jaws. Paramedics treated the boy for two deep cuts on his neck near the back of his head and some minor cuts on his head before being airlifted to Hervey Bay Hospital about 3am. He was found to also be suffering a fractured skull and at about 8am the boy was transferred to
Queensland’s Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. Du Toit warned visitors to Fraser Island to heed rangers’ advice and stay away from dingoes. “Just stay well clear of them, keep all food sources well locked up and away from dingoes, and never walk alone, always walk in groups,” he said.
The Australian DJ accused of attempting to snatch a twoyear-old boy off a San Francisco street may have suffered from “disengagement from reality”, according to his US lawyer. Roscoe Holyoake, a 34-year-old from Perth known as DJ Roski, entered not guilty pleas to kidnapping and child endangerment charges on Thursday. He remains in San Francisco County Jail after Superior Court Judge Vedica Puri sided with prosecutors and ruled to keep him in custody without bail. Holyoake’s lawyer, Stephen Olmo, told the Bay City News Service he had been in touch with Holyoake’s family and friends in Australia who all said the allegations did not match his character. “There was no evil intent,” Olmo said.
Trump feared for job US President Donald Trump believed the appointment of a special counsel to take over the federal probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election would spell the end of his presidency, according to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report. When then-attorney general Jeff Sessions informed Trump of Mueller’s appointment in May 2017, the report said Trump slumped back in his chair. “Oh my God. This is terrible. This is the end of my presidency. I’m f***ed,” Trump said. Details of Mueller’s investigation were released on Thursday, showing Trump tried to impede the probe and raising questions over whether the president committed the crime of obstruction of justice.

Woman killed in Northern Ireland riots A woman was killed after shots were fired during rioting in the Northern Irish city of Londonderry yesterday that saw police attacked by petrol bombs and other missiles. After earlier appealing for calm when a number of shots were fired in the Irish nationalist Creggan area of the city, police confirmed shortly after midnight that the 29-year-old woman had died. “We are treating this as a terrorist incident and we have launched a murder enquiry,” Po-
lice Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton said. A local journalist at the scene, Leona O’Neill, wrote on Twitter that after the woman was hit and fell beside a police Land Rover, officers rushed her to hospital, where she died. O’Neill had earlier posted videos of police vehicles being pelted with what she said were dozens of petrol bombs, bricks, bottles and fireworks. The videos showed two vehicles were left in the middle of the street and lit on fire.
The rioting was in response to a house search that a large number of officers conducted in the area, she said. The detonation of a large car bomb outside a courthouse in Londonderry in January highlighted the threat still posed by militant groups opposed to a 1998 peace deal that largely ended three decades of violence in the British-run province. No one was injured in the blast. US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi led a congressional delegation to the city
earlier, as part of a trip to show support for the peace agreement politicians in Washington helped to broker. The leaders of Northern Ireland’s two largest political parties, the Irish nationalist Sinn Fein party and pro-British Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), both condemned the killing. “Those who brought guns onto our streets in the 70s, 80s & 90s were wrong. It is equally wrong in 2019. No one wants to go back,” the DUP’s Arlene Foster said on Twitter.
Facebook has banned far-right groups including the British National Party (BNP) and the English Defence League (EDL) from having any presence on the social network for violating the site’s rules around promoting hate and violence. The banned groups, which also includes Knights Templar International, Britain First and the National Front as well as key members of their leadership, have been removed from both Facebook and Instagram. The social network’s policy does not allow groups or individuals which engage in “terrorist activity, organised hate, mass or serial murder, human trafficking or organised violence or criminal activity”.

Widows honour Sherpas AP Five years after one of the deadliest disasters on Mount Everest, three people from Nepal’s ethnic Sherpa community are preparing an ascent to raise awareness about the Nepalese mountain guides who make it possible for hundreds of foreign climbers to scale the mountain and survive. Kami Rita, a renowned climber who lived through the 2014 ice avalanche on Everest’s western shoulder that killed 16 fellow Sherpa guides, aims to break his own record by reaching the mountaintop a 23rd time this spring. Furdiki Sherpa, who lost her husband in a mountaineering accident, and Nima Doma, whose husband was killed in the 2014 avalanche, are also attempting to summit Everest, to bring attention to the plight of Sherpa families living in the shadow of the world’s highest peak. Rita, Sherpa and Doma hail from different villages in Nepal’s Himalayas, but share a goal of highlighting the bravery, sacrifice and athletic achievements of the ethnic Sherpa people, they told The Associated Press. “In the mountains, we are all like from
the same family. We spend months together at the base camp and at the same time, we are all unsure if we would return back to our family,” said Rita, who survived the 2014 avalanche by staying at Everest’s base camp. Sherpa’s husband, Mingma Sherpa, was part of an elite team of icefall “doctors” who are the first to fix ropes and aluminum ladders over the crevasses. In 2013, he slipped off a ladder and fell into the crevasse at the Khumbu Icefall just above base camp, long considered one of the most treacherous stages of the South Col route to Everest’s summit. “We want to climb Everest not just for us, but also for other women like us who have been widowed on the mountain,” Furdiki Sherpa said. The women plan to use their experience on Everest and the publicity it draws to start an organisation to provide financial help, job training and counseling for other Sherpa widows. Doma’s husband, Tshering Wangchuk, died in the 2014 avalanche, crushed by a serac, a building-size chunk of ice. Nepal’s Sherpa tribespeople were mostly yak herders and traders living deep
within the Himalayas until Nepal opened its borders in the 1950s after then-King Tribhuvan returned to power. Their stamina and familiarity with the mountains quickly made them sought-after guides and porters. After her husband’s death, Doma got a climbing-season job to support her children, then age 3 and 6. “When he was alive, all I had to do was look after the household chores, but after his death I was suddenly hit with all the responsibilities,” Doma said. “And then it hit me that why should we widows have to stay at home, so I started to think about climbing Everest, too, like the men.” While guides who help clients tackle the 8850m-high Everest can earn up to $10,000, a king’s ransom in a country where per capita income is about $1000 a year, the high-altitude Sherpa guides have only ever been men. After her husband’s sudden death, Doma joined other women who work as porters carrying supplies to Everest’s rocky base camp at 5300m, where climbers stay an average of six weeks to acclimatise before attempting the summit.
Trauma continues for shooting survivors AP Alex Rozenblat can still hear the cries of a wounded boy calling for help as she hid from the gunfire that killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last year. Talking to therapists at the school in Parkland, Florida, didn’t help. Each session had a different counselor, and she found herself rehashing traumas she had already expressed. She would rather turn to her friends, who understand what she went through. “There is slight pressure to get better as
quickly as you can, and since it’s been a year, everyone thinks that you are better,” the 16-year-old said. The mental health resources after a school shooting range from therapy dogs and grief counsellors at school to support groups, art therapy and in-home counseling. But there is no blueprint for dealing with the trauma because each tragedy, survivor and community is different. Many survivors don’t get counseling right away – sometimes waiting years – making it difficult to understand the full impact. The struggle is getting them to seek
help in the first place. In the two decades since the Columbine High School massacre, a network of survivors has emerged, reaching out to the newest victims to offer support that many say they prefer to traditional therapy. As the anguish festers, the danger grows, illustrated by the recent suicides of two Marjory Stoneman Douglas survivors and a father whose young child died in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. “It changes the community,” said psychologist Robin Gurwitch, a trauma specialist at Duke University Medical Centre.
Momoa shaves beard Aquaman is clean-shaven. Actor Jason Momoa on Wednesday released a video in which he shaved off his signature beard and mustache in order to promote recycling. He started by saying farewell to his Game of Thrones and DC characters Drogo and Arthur Curry. Momoa said he thought he last shaved in 2012. The 39-year-old says he wanted to do it to “bring awareness that plastics are killing our planet.” He says aluminum is the one thing that can save it and he promoted his own line of sparkling water in aluminum cans. Momoa says “there’s a change coming and it’s aluminum.”
Gable’s grandson dies A medical examiner says the grandson of actor Clark Gable died of an accidental drug overdose. The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s office says an autopsy found Clark James Gable III was killed by a combination of the opioids fentanyl and oxycodone, and the sedative alprazolam. It ruled his death an accident. Gable died in February. The 30-year-old lived in Dallas and hosted the reality TV show Cheaters, which featured confrontations with people suspected of infidelity. Gable’s death was the latest in a national opioid crisis that the claimed 48,000 lives in 2017.

Vodafone says it will switch off auto-forwarding for Vodafone Mail – despite promising free forwarding for life. The telco canned its free Vodafone Mail in 2017 after it had failed to resolve spam and delayed email issues for its 200,000 or so active users. Then consumer director Matt Williams said customers had told the firm its email service was not delivering on expectations. “That’s simply not good enough for us,” Williams said. Attempts to upgrade Vodafone Mail had met with “little success” due to the age of the platform. “We’ve made the decision to close the service and connect customers who need a hand setting up a new account to the email experts, Google Gmail and Microsoft Outlook,” Williams said. A key part of that helping hand was to offer auto-forwarding from a Vodafone Mail address to

than to their old Vodafone address. Vodafone said in a statement on Thursday, “When we discontinued our email service in 2017, we said we would offer auto-forwarding for customers indefinitely. “However, since then, the growth in spam and phishing type email attacks has resulted in major email platforms and others putting increasingly strict rules and technologies in place to protect users. “This has led, and will continue to lead, to a growing incidence of forwarded emails being treated as spam or blocked from reaching our customers’ new inboxes

Stocks rebound after CGT axed T
he local NZX 50 closed at a new record this week, with retirement village operators rebounding after the government said it would not proceed with a proposal for a capital gains tax. Meanwhile, the NZ dollar fell sharply after disappointing inflation for the March quarter increased the prospect of a rate cut at the Reserve Bank’s next meeting. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose just 0.1 per cent in the first quarter, pushing the annual rate of inflation from 1.9 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2018, to 1.5 per cent now. Within the index, the a2 Milk Company hit record highs, closing at $16.00 on Wednesday and validating its title of the best performer in the index, with shares up 43.5 per cent this year. Vista Group also closed at a record $5.09, with shares of the cinema software company up 35.7 per cent year-to-date. At the other end of the spectrum, Restaurant Brands tumbled more than 8.8 per cent in the wake of its full year result where it said it won’t pay a final dividend. Tourism Holdings plunged more than 20 per cent on the open after it downgraded net profit after tax for the 2019 financial year. The company now expects net profit after tax of between $25m to $28m for the year ended June 30, 2019, down from previous guidance of $32m. tions for the financial year are now substantially below previous forecasts. Tourism Holdings said the New Zealand and Australian markets remain on track with a “solid outlook”. The company will undertake an operational and capital review of the USA operations, and intends to update the market before the end of May. The retirement village sector continued to rebound after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern scrapped plans for a capital gains tax, suggesting the coalition government had not been able to reach a consensus. The sector had been under pressure in previous weeks after Summerset reported a 4.2 per cent decline in first quarter sales on the back of a softening housing market, in particular in Auckland and Christchurch. Mercury revised its fiscal year 2019 operating earnings guidance from $515m to $495m. The company said the change was due to an expected reduction in full year forecast hydro generation caused by dry weather in the Taupo area. The company said the reduction was expected to take place mostly in the fourth quarter of 2019. Meanwhile, competitor Gen-
esis also advised its operating earnings for the 2019 financial year will be at the lower end of its guidance range of $360m to $375m. The latest Global Dairy Trade auction saw the headline index rise 0.5 per cent, advancing for the 10th consecutive auction. This brings average pricing up 28 per cent since its November 2018 low point. However, the price of whole milk powder kept the gain muted, falling by 0.7 per cent. Anhydrous milk fat (+4.2 per cent) and butter (+3.5 per cent) saw the biggest gains while lactose (-3.4 per cent) and rennet casein (-2.4 per cent) fell the most. Elsewhere, there was a flurry of data points out of China this week. The Chinese sharemarket hit its highest level in nearly 13 months after data showed housing prices in 70 major Chinese cities increased an average of 10.6 per cent year-on-year in March, signalling an economic rebound. Chinese GDP grew an annual 6.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2019, unchanged from the fourth quarter and beating forecasts of 6.3 per cent. Meanwhile, retail sales climbed 8.7 per cent on the year in March, beating expectations for an increase of 8.4 per cent and up from 8.2 per cent in February. Facebook admits to email blunder NZME Facebook has admitted that it “unintentionally” uploaded email contacts of as many as 1.5m users without their permission, in the social network’s latest privacy blunder. It said the issue stemmed from a design change to its stepby-step verification process for users setting up an account, made three years ago. It meant that when users signed up to Facebook using their email address and password, they were not always aware that their email contacts
were being uploaded to the site. Facebook said the contacts had not been “shared with anyone and we’re deleting them”, adding that the issue had been fixed and it was notifying people affected. Last night Facebook also revealed that millions of Instagram users’ passwords were stored in plain text on its servers, making them potentially accessible to employees. Last month it said that tens of thousands of Instagram users were also affected when it revealed 600m Facebook users’ passwords were not encrypted.

Observations from three flights up S
itting on the third floor of Somerset House on a public holiday here in Ashburton can often be a desolate time. The phone remains silent, the camera sits reasonably quiet in its bag and the outside world can seem as though it’s miles away. Ashburton as a whole on these days is pretty quiet too. Everyone is enjoying their own time, doing what they can with the opportunity to not be doing what they normally do – spending time with family, fixing that leak in the spouting that’s been there since Christmas, or just switching off for a day to rest and recharge. But there is one section of the township that remains vibrant –
the only problem is that it’s too vibrant. I’m sitting here writing this near lunchtime on Friday and I can see the main road through town and the traffic heading south towards the bridge and the Tinwald corridor. It’s painfully slow. So slow in fact that I feel like I could go and stand on West
Street and get to the bridge faster walking than if I was in one of the hundreds of cars that have crawled their way past in the 20 minutes I’ve been casually observing. And it’s not getting any better. It’s frustrating to watch and I’m sure it’s even more frustrating to be stuck in, especially if your end destination is somewhere exciting. This issue has been a major bugbear for so many people for such a long time. You see comments posted on various things from time to time that lament the amount of time it takes to get from one side of town to the other when it’s busy
like this and the impact it has on travellers, especially on long weekends, or when something major is happening down the road, like a concert in Dunedin. Would a second route solve the problem? In most instances, yes it would. But there really is no quick fix. And Ashburton isn’t alone. Coming through our town you’ve got four stopping points – a roundabout and three sets of lights to get to the bridge – occasionally you might have to chuck a train into the mix too. But take Timaru, for example, and there’s eight sets of lights on the main road through before you come out on the other side
near the botanical gardens. That’s a fair few stops, especially if you get a bad run of lights. Chuck thousands of vehicles going through those points in a row and it’s no wonder things come to a standstill. The most concerning thing though is the amount of frustration it causes. If it takes 25 minutes or longer to get from the Ashburton Raceway to the old saleyards at Tinwald then you are more likely to be impatient, want to get moving again and then more likely once more to make a decision that could have a tragic outcome. And that’s a situation no-one wants to find themselves in.

Israel Folau May I, through your paper, help to clarify what Israel Folau is saying in his recent tweet. It’s not as the media is trying to portray that he hates sinners, but rather he hates the sin and loves the sinner. That’s what Jesus asks us to do. It really comes down to the fact that there are only two kinds of people in the world, the believer and the non-believer. It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female, dark-skinned or fair, tall or short, test tube baby or natural born, you still end up being a believer or a non-believer. We all believe in heaven and hell as we all use these words in our everyday speech, the believer as information and adoration, the non-believer usually as a swear word and just as there is only two kinds of people there are only two places we can go. Hell you have to do nothing, heaven you have to repent first and that’s what Israel Folau was stating, everyone has choice. Seven Sharp said a few nights ago that we were all going to hell as we were all sinners, we are all sinners, but the believers choose to repent. George Rendall
Representation It was ironic to read, in the Christchurch Press on Saturday, only a few days after the Ashburton Guardian reported, with express approval, the Ashburton District Council’s decision to reduce the number of its councillors from 12 to 9 has been ratified by the Appeal Authority, that the Canterbury Regional Council has decided to increase the number of members sitting on the council so the views of the South Canterbury region are represented, although not on a strictly proportional basis, on that council. Councillor Selwyn Price is absolutely correct that the disap-
Israel Folau pointing decision by the Ashburton District Council to reduce the number of its councillors reduces the ability of our council to represent the diversity of its citizens. Despite your editorial stating there will be no change for ratepayers as a result of the council’s retrograde decision, democracy in our district has been reduced. I was one of the people who made a submission to the council opposing the proposed reduction in the number of our councillors. As you reported, the vast majority of ratepayers made no submission, and I was among a minority of citizens who made submissions on the question. However, although there may have been few other submissions similar to my own, that does not make my opposition, or that of any other person, incorrect, or wrong. Minority viewpoints need to be respected, and considered. Otherwise we have a dictatorship of the majority, which is, as the saying goes, often “blind”. I urge the Ashburton Guardian to maintain its support of democracy, diversity, and liberal expression, and not take a position
that the majority, which is often “silent”, is necessarily correct. I consider history has far too often shown a majority of voters may be misguided, or misled, and guilty of tolerating tyranny: think Hitler. Despite your editorial, I consider there is no discernible advantage to the Ashburton District whatsoever in the reduction in the number of ratepayer representatives on the council that has now been ratified. There is no monetary saving to ratepayers as we will still pay the same amount of money to a reduced number of councillors. (I do not think that was made clear in the documents issued by the council supporting its proposal). Fewer councillors will have to make the decisions required for our district on our behalf. Possibly, there may be increased unanimity in the council, but I do not consider unanimity is necessarily an advantage. Think Stalinist Russia. At the same time as other councils in Aotearoa are instituting measures to increase the ability of citizens to be represented and “to have a say” on councils, our council has gone in the
opposite direction, reducing representation, stifling diversity, and reinforcing the impression the majority “rules”. Which, of course, in a democracy, it does. That is how our system works. So it is very important the decisions made are “informed” decisions, based on an assessment of a wide range of arguments. Democracy is fragile. It enables the majority to make decisions in opposition to any other view, how ever strongly held. It favours oppression, and it enables the tyranny of the majority over every minority. Think colonialism, think oppression. Not having your considered view represented or valued may lead to dissension, animosity, and mistrust. It remains as important as it ever has been to have as wide a diversity of views represented on decision-making authorities, such as the Ashburton District Council, as possible. Naturally, the majority view will prevail: that is how our democratic system works. In my view, it is more important than ever for councillors to have a diverse range of views placed before it to consider and evaluate before they vote and make a decision on our behalf on any particular issue. Councillors need to be well informed (and well paid). The decision of the Ashburton District Council to reduce the number of representatives was a thoroughly regrettable decision, and, despite possibly being supported by the silent majority of ratepayers, and by a majority of the ratepayers who made a submission, and by most of our councillors, it is bad for our democracy. Well done to the citizens who took the matter to appeal. They should be applauded for their courage, not criticised. Aorahanui to them. Salaam Alaikum, Jonathan Everist

The cold hard fact is that God’s Son was dead in the grave!’ This is the day that the majority of people can relate to in some parts of Africa and in much of the world – Asia, South America, and Northern Europe!

This is the day for the refugees who feel they are in a hopeless place – no future! This is the day for those who have lost loved ones in terrorist attacks; been maimed by terrorist bombs. Holy Saturday is the feast day for the hopeless; for those who have run out of possibilities and
can do nothing to alter their plight. All that people can do is to wait like the women waiting at the tomb – Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb. – Matthew 27:61. Joseph of Arimathea does what he can along with Nicodemus, (John 19:38-42) but it still ends in a tomb! Holy Saturday reminds us that we are utterly dependent on God for our rescue. Our hope is in him alone. So we trust the one who entered death, the ultimate end
of hope. When our lives reflect on that Saturday, we can still wait with hope. Sunday is coming!

The 2018 Youth Olympic Games must now seem a long time ago for Methven 16-year-old, Brea Roderick. Since returning from South America with a silver medal proudly dangling from her neck in October, the youth triathlete has enjoyed a hectic summer of competition and now a busy past few months has been topped off by her naming in the TriNZ elite junior triathlon team for the world championships. When you have big dreams, there’s little time to rest. Between December and March Roderick competed in all three rounds of the Australian Under-19 Triathlon Series and consistent performances at each of these races – third on the Gold Coast, first in Canberra, and fourth in Devonport – resulted in her finishing the Australian series as the highest overall point scorer. Then, in January, she completed an altitude training camp at the Snow Farm in Wanaka and while based down south she placed first in the sprint distance event at the New Zealand Off-road Triathlon Championships. At the start of March she headed back to Devonport in the Australian state of Tasmania and competed at the Oceania Championships. Her performance there – where she was the second Kiwi home and fourth woman home overall – resulted in her automatic selection to the New Zealand Junior Elite Team for the 2019 ITU World Triathlon Championships. The world event will take place in Lausanne in Switzerland. It was the second year she had gained selection to the TriNZ junior elite team, and it may not be the last. At the age of just 16, Roderick potentially has a further two world championships ahead of her in the ITU elite junior division (under-19) – Canada in 2020 and Bermuda in 2021. But, that was the future, and for now Roderick’s attention was firmly on what lay immediately in front of her. Her latest competitions saw

her head back to the now familiar surrounds of Australia’s Gold Coast earlier this month, where she was given a starting position in an open age group event – the ITU Oceania Continental Cup. There, she was the 19th woman home out of around 50, finishing only 90 seconds behind the winner. She was the fourth under-19 athlete across the finish line, and
the first 16-year-old. The day after that she represented New Zealand in an invitational mixed team relay, where her New Zealand team finished third. Due to a clash with the Gold Coast events, Roderick relinquished the opportunity to race at this year’s national secondary school championships. It was a decision made with
slight disappointment, but Roderick felt that the experience she would gain from racing in an event such as the Continental Cup was too valuable an experience to pass up. The two Gold Coast events signalled the end of her summer of Australasian competition, and her focus was now on getting ready for the challenge awaiting in Switzerland.
She is all set to head to Europe later this year, where she would train with the older members of the TriNZ High Performance Squad. It is a trip that will provide opportunities to compete in a couple of European Junior Continental Cup races as a build-up to the world championships at the start of September in Switzerland.

Green’s importance played down by Warriors Pre-season fears that the Warriors’ NRL hopes hinge on the fitness of Blake Green have been heightened this week, although the club insists they can cope without him against North Queensland. Green’s groin was a talking point all week ahead of today’s match between two bottom-eight rivals at Mt Smart Stadium. The 32-year-old was named to start and trained on Wednesday but coach Stephen Kearney can’t be conclusive about the starting halfback berth.
Green trained yesterday and medical staff were assessing if there would be any recurrence of the twinge that ruled him out of last week’s 28-24 loss to South Sydney. That match was notable for the Warriors conceding three tries in the final quarter to squander a 12-point lead. The control and direction Green provides was missing but Kearney wouldn’t attribute his absence for the late meltdown. The blame for failing to complete six of their last eight sets was
spread across the team, he said, with rookie playmaker Chanel Harris-Tavita not alone in making some key late blunders. “We don’t want to put any super-reliance on one person,” Kearney said. “We expect whoever comes into the team to fulfil their role and do it well. “We got ourselves into a position where we could have got away with the win there but we just didn’t it finish it off the way we wanted to.” Captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck

ivasa-Sheck said. “But just in the back end is the big lesson for us as leaders to step up. I thought Chanel did his job really well.” The Souths loss was the Warriors’ first close game of the season following two heavy defeats and two substantial wins, both came at their Auckland home ground. The Cowboys (1-4) are probably yearning for the return of injured powerhouse Jason Taumalolo as much as the Warriors want Green back.

Rakaia, Celtic victorious By Matt Markham

Night rugby returned to the Ashburton District on Thursday night to kickstart the long weekend, with three local side in action under the lights. Celtic took on West Melton on home turf while, under the mountains, country bedfellows Methven and Rakaia locked horns in another instalment of their long-standing rivalry. Mid Canterbury’s two other sides; Southern and Hampstead were set to battle it out in a Good Friday showdown at Hinds, but Hampstead were forced to default from the match leaving Southern’s unbeaten run in tact and gifting them some very valuable points in the overall competition. After being dealt a hefty defeat last Saturday, the pressure was on Celtic to brush that loss to one side and get themselves back up for the challenge against West Melton and a five-try effort saw them get five valuable competition points, winning 33-22. It wasn’t champagne rugby, but for coach Shane Enright it was about all he could ask from a side that is still without the services of about eight front-line players. “There were improvements after last week, for sure - but we still have a lot to get right,” Enright said. “The most important thing was getting those points, you’ll take that any day of the week.” Doubles to both Sean Strange and fullback Tololima Senetenari paved the way to success but Celtic did struggle to combat a big West Melton pack which crashed over on numerous occasions with pick-and-goes from within the red zone. “We struggled to hold them out in that aspect.” Celtic will now focus on their clash with Hurunui next Saturday and will welcome back some heavy-hitters for the match in particular, the experienced Shepherd Mhembere and Angus Lindsay. They then face two away games to finish the round robin stage of the competition against Oxford and Lincoln. Out in Methven it was the locals who set the pace early and when lock Campbell Sommerville won a 30 metre foot race against some slick Rakaia backs after a chargedown to dive on the ball first, it appeared that the Methven lads were on the right path. But it was Rakaia who made the most of their opportunities to run away 29-13 victors and keep their season alive. Rakaia’s momentum, particularly in the first half was spurred by influential loose forward Seta Koroitamana who caused havoc each and every time he got the ball in his hands. What Koroitamana does well is push the boundaries and while largely effective, it can often find him on the wrong side of the law at times and successive penalties for infringements at the ruck saw him sent to the sideline for 10 minutes near half-time. boat at that point of time as well though which tempered the moment with Tyler Blackburn down the other end of the paddock serving time after he was incorrectly identified as committing a foul while Rakaia were hot on attack on the Methven line. After Methven’s opening try, the momentum swung firmly in favour of Rakaia who looked strong with the ball in hand and scored two good tries from open play in the first 40 minutes. Methven looked impressive with the ball in hand at times too, but were guilty of pushing one pass too many at times which under lights and with a damp ground underfoot left the ball slipping out of hands in the heat of battle. Despite that they only trailed 8-12 at the break and the match belonged to anybody. Three second half tries to Rakaia sealed the match in the second stanza though as again they made the most of opportunities and used their free-running backs to great impact. The experienced head of Andrew Letham played a big role in feeding that with his decision-making from second-five influential in finding space for the speedsters both inside and outside him. Another experienced player took to the field for Rakaia, former Heartland player Kody Nordqvist who wasted no time in making an impact - albeit a light-hearted one. Within seconds of making it onto the field he could be over-

For Methven, former Rakaia mid-fielder, Nete Caucau offered a lot of momentum with the ball in hand and caused problems for his former team mates every time he got the ball. Rakaia now sit in a slightly precarious position in Section B with a cross-over match against Oxford next week before games against Ohoka and Southbridge to round out pool play.
If they can win two of those three matches they shouldn’t be too far away from the business end of the competition – particularly if they can roll old foe Southbridge in the last round. Methven on the other hand are in a far more dangerous spot and unless they can turn things right around and win their next three games against Springston, Saracens and Ohoka they are virtually no chance of earning a spot in the top stage of the knockout part of the competition. Focus on Hunter Memorial Just minor changes have been made to the Highlanders’ starting team this week for the Gordon Hunter Memorial Trophy match against the Blues in Dunedin tonight. All Black forward Jackson Hemopo returns at lock to partner Tom Franklin at Forsyth Barr Stadium, and Sio Tomkinson takes the place of Rob Thompson, who is unavailable for family reasons this week. All Blacks Aaron Smith and Luke Whitelock return from injury and will start from the bench. Having players of their calibre and experience come on towards the end of the game will be very handy, especially if the match is in the balance. Smith injured his ankle in the round six game, ironically against the Blues. He was originally scheduled to be out for 4-6 weeks but has missed just two games during his speedy recovery. “Nuggy and Luke have both worked incredibly hard to make themselves available and their return this week provides the team with a bit of a boost,’’ coach Aaron Mauger said yesterday. “We are aware of the challenges the Blues will bring on Saturday, all the New Zealand conference games bring a high degree of intensity.’’ Meanwhile Highlanders winger Tevita Li looks poised to get a little help on the flank tonight. The franchise has confirmed it has called in former Highlanders winger Patrick Osborne as a shortterm replacement. His arrival takes the team’s stock of specialist wingers to two. Li has been on his own since All Black Waisake Naholo was ruled out with a knee injury earlier this month. Fijian winger Tevita Nabura succumbed to a knee injury in early February and was ruled out for the season. Utility back Matt Faddes has slotted in on the right flank for the past two matches but he pulled up lame in the game against Crusaders on Friday night. Li will surely start on one flank and he is hoping to see more of the ball.

All Black Jackson Hemopo is back to boost the Highlanders’ forward pack tonight. “I just feel like there is a few things in my game I want to improve on,’’ Li said when asked about his form. “I just want to get the ball in my hands and attack a bit more.’’ He has been concentrating on lifting his work rate off the ball and “popping up wherever I can and not just standing on the wing yelling for it’’. It has not been easy for the Highlanders’ wingers this season. The midfield has seen more combinations that it takes to solve Rubik’s Cube. The Highlanders have not won since round two, so the team’s
playoffs prospects are teetering, and a loss to the Blues would not ease the pressure. “It is a little bit frustrating because we are not too far away,’’ Li said. “I think there is a little bit we can tidy up in our game. “Just staying connected together and believing in each other because I believe we can turn the season around. “We all believe that. “We just got to go out there and play the footy that we like to play with speed and razzle.’’ The Highlanders have retained the Gordon Hunter Memorial Tro-

Former Wallabies skipper Nick Farr-Jones says Australian coach Michael Cheika has made a mistake in publicly stating he won’t play Israel Folau following the player’s controversial social media posts. Folau has said he will appeal Rugby Australia’s decision to issue the Wallabies star with a breach notice for his anti-gay social media post last week. Rugby Australia said last week it plans to terminate Folau’s contract because of the comments. Farr-Jones, who lifted the Webb Ellis Cup in 1991, says Rugby Aus-
tralia should reconsider their stance because ‘everyone makes mistakes’ while also blasting Cheika for prematurely making the call that he’d never pick Folau again. In a press conference on Monday, Cheika said would not have been able to select fullback Israel Folau for the Wallabies after his latest “disrespectful” social media posts attacking gay people. Chieka said Folau’s latest comments crossed a line. “We’ve had the discussion about it after the last time about his right to believe and our support in that,”
he said. “But getting out in that disrespectful manner publicly is not what our team’s about. “When you play in the gold (Wallabies) jersey, we’re representing everyone in Australia. “I felt that I needed to talk to him (Folau) about why, but I haven’t had that chance as yet.” Farr-Jones told Macquire Sports Radio that people make mistakes and Cheika needs a player like Folau at the World Cup. “If I was Raelene Castle, I’d be calling Cheika into my office and be saying this isn’t resolved yet.”
They’ve tried for six years but the Blues have yet to beat the Highlanders under the roof in Dunedin. For veteran hooker James Parsons, who will bring up his 100th game for the Blues tonight in the deep south, the waiting is a familiar experience. The 32-year-old, part of Harbour’s recovery in the Mitre 10 Cup and a man who is craving success for the Blues like few others, is nothing if not patient. Parsons had to persevere for something like 10 games as Keven Mealamu’s back-up on the reserves bench before he made his Super Rugby debut in Dunedin in 2012. That’s a lot of running up and down sidelines in a tracksuit in order to make yourself noticed. But, as the Blues target their second win over the Highlanders this season after their thriller at Eden Park last month, Parsons now joins an exclusive club including Mealamu, Jerome Kaino, Tony Woodcock, Ali Williams and John Afoa. “I’m pretty proud to have that stickability I suppose,” Parsons said. “It’s not something you set out for. “You’re just grabbing on to the contract when you start and you’re striving to make the starting XV … but obviously when you get into the 90s you get pretty excited. “To do it with both Harbour and the Blues is something I’m really proud of.” The Blues are also excited about their opportunity at Forsyth Barr Stadium against a side which have endured some rotten luck this season and are last in the NZ conference. Coach Leon MacDonald has named an unchanged backline and has made only one change to the pack – prop Sione Mafileo starting instead of Ofa Tuungafasi – and he feels the dry ball and associated quick pace of the game will suit a side on track for a playoffs position this season. The Blues are in sixth and have a bye next weekend but will face a torrid examination by the Highlanders. MacDonald is also well aware the Blues could be in a similar position to Aaron Mauger’s team, who have two wins in eight games. The Blues have four – their streak broken last weekend by the Chiefs in Hamilton. The Blues will be determined to honour Parsons, the 32-year-old former skipper who has played two tests for the All Blacks.

While their younger counterparts have the day off, Mid Canterbury United’s two men’s teams will be in action on the football field today. Mid Canterbury United’s division one team is set to host FC Twenty 11 Falcons at the Ashburton Domain at 2.30pm and they’ll be hoping for a much better result than the one they came away from round two with. In their first game in the division one competition, having gone through unbeaten last year and taking out division two to earn themselves promotion to division one, the Mid Canterbury boys picked up a good, strong win over Halswell United Goal Exchange. But in round two, in Christchurch last weekend, they had to settle for a 2-all draw against Selwyn United FC’s division one side. That means that after two games Mid Canterbury United are fourth on the points table, just two points off the three teams who are two from two so far in 2019 – Halswell United 1964s, St Albans Shirley FC Thunder Panthers and Universities AFC Gators. Their opposition in Ashburton today, the FC Twenty 11 Falcons, are one of four teams yet to pick up a win from the first two rounds. Meanwhile, Mid Canterbury United’s division six team are off to Christchurch again today, with the Halswell United Globetrotters their opposition at the Halswell Domain. Methven FC Reserves are also off to Christchurch for their next game in the same division today, with their game against the FC Twenty 11 Army set down for
Avonhead Park. Meanwhile, the Methven FC Seniors in division three Mainland Football competition are set to host their first game of the season today, with the Christchurch

SBW on Dragons’ wishlist? All Blacks midfielder Sonny Bill Williams has again been linked with a shock move to rugby league – this time to join the Catalan Dragons in France. RugbyPass is reporting that the 33-year-old midfielder is top of the Dragons’ wishlist and that head coach Steve McNamara is desperate to reunite with Williams, who he coached as an assistant at the Sydney Roosters in 2014. The Dragons, who have been inconsistent this season and are currently in sixth place on the Super League table, recently signalled their ambition when they signed Kiwi prop Sam Kasiano from the Melbourne Storm. Williams is expected to make Steve Hansen’s All Blacks squad for the World Cup in Japan, but the 51-test All Black is currently recovering from shoulder surgery that should keep him sidelined for at least six weeks. Sprint star Eddie tip for AB sevens Eddie Osei-Nketia for the All Blacks sevens team — that’s the inside tip from the top Kiwi sportsman who has become the young sprint sensation’s mentor. And athletics fans need not fret. Former Commonwealth Games athlete Gary Henley-Smith, who combined rugby and running in his day, believes the teenage Osei-Nketia will be able to pursue a black jersey and Olympic double dream. Henley-Smith – who is coaching and mentoring Osei-Nketia – and his wife Susanne have become so close to the teen that he even calls them dad and mum now and then. If anyone knows the life as a footballing athlete it is Henley-Smith who has taken Osei-Nketia under his wing at Wellington’s Scots College, the school which also helped hone Steven Adams into an NBA
basketball star. West Aucklander Henley-Smith first hit the headlines in the 1970s, as a schoolboy sensation out of Auckland Grammar.As an athlete, he was a national secondary school sprint champion, and also set longstanding junior records. He went on to compete in the 1990 Commonwealth Games, and athletics took him on a scholarship to Washington State University. But his career was incredibly varied.The flying fullback played rugby under future World Cup winner Sir Graham Henry at Auckland Grammar, and again with the University club. And personal connections helped take Henley-Smith to the famous Wigan league club in England, where his brief career included victory over the Kiwis in 1985.

Nomads, Team Donkey front runners Nomads and Team Donkey MSA Checkers both notched up victories in Wednesday night basketball, with the latter making the perfect start to the season with their second victory. They took on the Newlands Gannets on Wednesday night – the new legs to the competition after having the bye during the first round last week. In a rematch of last year’s finals, it was again a closely fought affair. The Gannets looked to be well in control of the match with a seven point lead halfway through the fourth quarter only to lose by seven points – thanks in large to a standout performance from Pip Johnston. He used all his skill and experience to take control of the game, finishing with 23 points. The Hunt brothers, Kieran (19 points) and Gareth (12 points) again showed their class and Thomas O’Brien was again excellent on the boards. Gannets had a slightly new look about them, with three new team members. Marc Juntilla was his speedy self and topped the scoring with
25 points and was well supported by Nick Fechney (8 points) and Jason O’Connor (14 points). After snatching defeat from the jaws of victory last week, Nomads made no mistakes this week in their clash with the College side, keeping their opponents busy throughout the match. By the third quarter they had managed to get a healthy lead, which this time they did not relinquish. College on the other hand found their full court press was at times ineffectual, which in turn hindered their fast break. However they still managed to create enough offensive opportunities, but were unable to find the basket consistently enough to push Nomads. Fotu Hala was again the standout for College with 21 points and numerous rebounds and was well supported by hard working Sam Pearce (12 points) and Thomas Patterson (8 points). For Nomads, Kody Stuthridge made a welcome return to the Nomads line-up, scoring 20 points, and was ably supported by Pete Kirwan with 14 points. Star enjoyed the bye this week.

Local training duo flying Guardian racing reporter Matt Markham looks at the racing week that has been and what lies ahead. Young Ashburton trainers flying The stocks of young Ashburton training duo, Sarah and Matthew Smith continue to rise at a rapid rate. The pair picked up their third winner of the season last Saturday when the very much in-form Diorissimo was victorious on a big day of racing at Riccarton – making it two wins in a row for the daughter of Showcasing. From 33 starters to the races this season, the Smith pair have picked up three winners and eight placings with a further seven occasions where they have finished in the top five. That’s a healthy strike-rate for a stable with a small number of horses and has more and more attention being drawn their way as they try to establish themselves on the tough thoroughbred training scene.
We often undervalue just how good he is ... When someone is successful for such a long period of time, it can be easy to lose sight of just how good they are. In nutshell, that’s pretty much Ricky May. The Methven horseman, who is an absolute champion in the sulky, just continues to get the results. His drive to win last Sunday’s Rangiora Classic on A G’s White Socks was a typically patient and perfect Ricky drive and then a couple of races later he went the other way and grabbed the bull by the horns with Missie Castleton and produced a

For almost the last 30 years, May has been in the top echelon of drivers in New Zealand, he consistently posts a high number of wins for the season and with 64 in the bank for this season already, he’s on track for another big tally as he draws ever closer to the 3000 win mark – with just 90 remaining.
Sam is back ... with a vengeance

How good is it to see Sam Wynne back in the saddle and doing what she does best winning. The rare talent returned to race riding a few weeks ago after almost a year on the sideline due to injury and has picked up where she left off pretty quickly. She’s already notched up 50 rides and from that impressive number grabbed seven winners including a huge feature double with Who Dares Wins for Tony and Lyn Prendergast at Riccarton over the past two weeks. With 291 wins next to her name, Wynne won’t take long to get to the 300 win mark
over the next couple of weeks at her current rate. It’s great to have her back in the riding scene around Canterbury and word around is that another popular and talented jockey, Kylie Williams, isn’t too far away from a return either.
Life without Winx ... I wrote earlier this week about the end of Winx’s racing career, but I must touch on it here again too. What a wonderful racehorse she has been, not just for her immense talent on the race track but also her ability to bring racing alive again. The industry in both Australia and New Zealand is going to be all the poorer for her retirement, but the prospect of what she might be able to do in the breeding barn is exciting.
Racing this weekend With a couple of days of non-racing, it’s a pretty quiet weekend in the Canterbury region with just a couple of harness meetings on Saturday and then Monday. It’s a big day at Addington today and then an even bigger day out at Motukarara on Monday
where there are some huge fields on offer. A real interest meeting for the weekend though will be what comes from the huge day of racing at Riverton today for their annual Easter two-day meeting on today and Monday. There are huge fields down there with some quality horseflesh in action and there’s bound to be plenty of punter interest.
What are we backing? No luck last week. None at all. Onwards and upwards though – we can turn this around. Harness: We are going to head to Motukarara on Monday and unbelievably to the maiden trot where Far From True does battle. Third at Addington last week, she’s a swift beginner with plenty of upside who will relish the grass track and can win. Gallops: I like the way the Brad McDonald-trained Feelin The Love found the line in a recent Ashburton trial. With an apprentice allowance the eight-year-old mare might not be the worst option for a wee place bet, or even an each way in a good field in Race 6 today at Riverton.

No double for Megablast NZME Nigel Tiley has no expectation that he can repeat his Gr.2 Manco Easter Handicap (1600m) win of last year, despite having twice the hand in today’s Ellerslie feature. Tiley won the race from his home base of Pukekohe last year with Megablast, taking advantage of heavy10 conditions during a period when the Ellerslie track was undergoing renovation work. Talented All Too Hard fouryear-old Demonetization joins Megablast in today’s contest, set to be run on a dead4 surface at worst with no rain forecast before the race. Tiley said Shinko King sevenyear-old gelding Megablast didn’t have the residual fitness he had going into the race last year and the Easter Handicap was more a suitable starting point for an upcoming Brisbane campaign. “He’s not as forward as he was last year. “He was ready to go last year,” Tiley said.

“He hasn’t got the best conformation and he’s best with cut in the ground. “From that draw, we’ve got no choice but to go back. “He’ll probably be trapped wide, but if he can get cover he’ll be fine. “He’ll head to Brisbane after this and follow the same sort of campaign as Megablast. “We’ll just place them where we think they can be competitive.” TAB bookmakers have Demonetization as a $7 second favourite, while Megablast is the field’s $81 outsider, in a market headed by the Peter McKay-trained The Mitigator at $4.50. Tiley will also produce Riding The Wave at Ellerslie, the Malibu Moon three-year-old chasing his third straight win as he prepares to tackle the Marks Ewen 1400. “He’s improved since his Te Aroha win and this is a nice race for him, though he might be looking for 1600m now. “There should be good speed though and that would suit him,” Tiley said.
Smith eyes Brisbane New Zealand-bred galloper Order Again will aim to add another stakes victory to his tally when he contests the Listed Tails Stakes (1615m) at Doomben today. The five-year-old gelding is coming off an impressive win over 1500m at Eagle Farm and has been marked as an early $3.60 favourite for the race by TAB bookmakers. Southern triple crown tilt NZME The Graham and Michael Eadetrained Orepuki Lad has taken out two southern cups this season and the Riverton galloper is being set to add another to the mantle when he contests his home cup today. The son of Raise The Flag has won four of his 14 starts, including the Listed Dunedin Gold Cup (2400m) and Invercargill Gold Cup (2600m) and Graham Eade said it would be a great thrill to take out the Listed Carriers Arms Hotel Riverton Cup (2147m) this weekend. “It would be great to win our home cup. “I don’t think it has ever been done before, one horse winning

the three cups in a year, it would be great to do it.” Orepuki Lad is coming off a last start fifth-placing to ill-fated galloper Boots ‘N’ All in the Hororata Gold Cup (1800m) and Eade believes his charge will appreciate the step up in distance on Saturday. “It was a very good run last start,” he said. “It was only 1800m and there were some very good horses in there and he still ran fifth and wasn’t far off the winner. “The longer it gets, the better for him.” The five-year-old gelding will jump from barrier one with regular rider Leah Hemi aboard and the only concern Eade has is the month between runs.

Consistent galloper Sentient will step up to open company for the first time when he contests the Waiau Hotel Aparima Handicap (1200m), while stablemate Ruakiwi Blaze will tackle the Speight’s & Pankhurst Sawmilling Porakino Handicap (1600m). “Sentient, he’s a bit of a bridesmaid,” Eade said. “He’s had about five seconds and he has been carrying a lot of weight. “We couldn’t get into the (rating) 72, so we have put him in the open handicap, which is a big call. “He’s down in weight to 54kg, where he was carrying 59.5kg. He’s a good bread and butter horse. “Ruakiwi Blaze, she’s a small wee thing, just like a pony, but she is another one that does her best and will be right there.”

But I did give him a trial, so hopefully that was enough. “There are some good horses in there, like Tommy Tucker. He won’t get everything his own way. “There are two or three leaders there and it’s going to be tough enough.” Eade hasn’t made any set plans with Orepuki Lad after today’s assignment, but is contemplating taking his gelding north to Riccarton in a fortnight. “We’ll see how he goes and we’ll just take it step-by-step,” he said. “There is a race for him at Christchurch in a fortnight, but we will just see how he goes on Saturday.”

Toxic Folau saga could help Wallabies By Gregor Paul NZME
The high drama across the Tasman with Israel Folau might not be such a bad thing for the Wallabies. It might even be the catalyst they have been looking for to pull together a talented but wayward group. The Wallabies have been a good team waiting to happen in the last few years but between the volatility of head coach Michael Cheika and his deteriorating relationship with former assistant Stephen Larkham and a lack of mental resolve among the players, they have been erratic and disjointed since the last World Cup. The administrative mess created by the need to axe one of their Super Rugby teams in 2017 and the lingering ill-feeling that created, has compounded this sense that Australian rugby operates in a near permanent chaos. And now there is the Folau saga, which everyone can see is not going to end well. There will be precisely no winners in this sad, nasty business, however it concludes. Folau may well win his legal fight and save his career but it will be the mother of all Pyrrhic victories. Rugby teams haven’t presented themselves in recent years as the most socially inclusive institutions and no doubt Folau is not the only homophobe in the professional game. But the typical Super Rugby changing room is not morally bereft or without good, decent people and among Folau’s peers, there will be widespread and intense discomfort with what he has said. The majority haven’t expressed their disgust, but that doesn’t mean they don’t feel it and Folau, should he be able to continue playing is going to hold Pariah status.
Israel Folau might end up galvanising the Wallabies.
His Waratahs teammates will not find it easy to forgive and forget, but in the spirit of the unity and inclusiveness that they want Folau to support, they will have to find a way, however unpalatable, to accept him as part of the team. But it will be a different case for the Wallabies who simply don’t have to pick him. Cheika has been criticised for saying he won’t select Folau following his social media comments, with former Wallaby Nick Farr-Jones adamant that the coach has prematurely played his hand. Far from being lambasted as he was, Cheika should be applauded for protecting the cultural integrity of the Wallabies and making it clear he won’t give a test jersey to
any player who wants to be selective about which parts of Australian society they are willing to represent. Australia tore itself apart deciding whether to legalise gay marriage and in New South Wales and Queensland, where the majority of the rugby fraternity are based, they respectively voted 42 per cent and 39 per cent against. Those statistics hint at the inevitability of the hard core Wallaby supporter seeing winning a World Cup as a more worthy goal than taking a moral stand. No one can deny that Folau is a brilliant footballer and that the Wallabies will be a better equipped, more potent attacking force with him in the team.
Cheika will, therefore, come under pressure to bow to the tangible: to accept the undeniable truth that Folau’s playing talent outweighs any intangible disruptive element his presence may provoke and has to be picked. And so it will rumble, the differing views creating a near intolerable pressure on Cheika and his Wallaby team, with the Australian Rugby Union powerless to intervene as if Folau wins his case, the national body will be re-cast as interested bystander. The situation will look explosive. Toxic even and a Wallaby team, faith in whom has been tumbling as it is, will suddenly appear to have crashed off the rails just months before the World Cup. But this seemingly hopeless and desperate situation could just as easily, if not more probably, flip the Wallabies back on their feet and be the galvanising force they have craved since 2016. The Wallabies have used player-driven adversity to drive them in the past. In 2014 they were on the cusp of a meltdown when Kurtley Beale triggered a scandal following an unsavoury text exchange with the team’s commercial manager. It was a similarly divisive business that ended up with the Wallabies under siege in the build-up to the final Bledisloe Cup test of the year in Brisbane. The Wallabies were front page news that week, not for anything they were doing or had done on the field, but because Rugby Australia board members were leaking details about all sorts of things they shouldn’t have been. Written off as a rabble, the Wallabies were miraculously good at Suncorp. Adversity drew them together, focused their minds and they were within one minute of a famous win.

QUIN, Richard Philip (Dick) – Passed away on April 13, 2019, at home in Christchurch, aged 79 years. Formerly of Tapanui and Methven. Cherished husband of Margaret (nee Ellis), dearly loved Dad of Chris, Jo and Vicky, and father-in-law of Julia and Ian. Adored Papa of Jessica and Matthew, and Oscar, Kate (passed), Charlie, Max, and Leo. Loved son of the late Philip and Mona Quin (Tapanui); loved brother of Bill and Kathleen (deceased), and Sheila Young (Auckland), and loved by his nieces and nephews and their families.
