Ashburton will miss out on one of its major social events of the year with the popular Christmas in the Park put on hold for 12 months. It was announced yesterday that the annual event, which sees some of the best local talent on show, was being put on hold, citing “many factors” as the reason behind the decision. Run by the Ashburton New Life Church, under the umbrella of the Ashburton Christian Ministers’ Asso-

ciation, it was lcoal pastor, Lisa Anderson’s, initial vision that led to the event being created. Her intention was to bring the real meaning of Christmas to the Ashburton District, and said not running it this year was a tough call to make. “Many factors came into account for a rest this year,” she said in a statement. “And this was proving a little tough for our team to keep this year’s event at the same standard as previous years. “The decision was not made lightly and after many weeks of meetings and

talking with other volunteers, we have decided to take a break for 2017, and we intend to continue with Christmas in the Park next year.” News of the decision to not hold the event this year drew a lot of attention on social media yesterday with visitors to the Guardian Facebook page expressing their dismay.
