Ashburton will miss out on one of its major social events of the year with the popular Christmas in the Park put on hold for 12 months.

It was announced yesterday that the annual event, which sees some of the best local talent on show, was being put on hold, citing “many factors” as the reason behind the decision.

Run by the Ashburton New Life Church, under the umbrella of the Ashburton Christian Ministers’ Asso-

ciation, it was lcoal pastor, Lisa Anderson’s, initial vision that led to the event being created.

Her intention was to bring the real meaning of Christmas to the Ashburton District, and said not running it this year was a tough call to make.

“Many factors came into account for a rest this year,” she said in a statement.

“And this was proving a little tough for our team to keep this year’s event at the same standard as previous years.

“The decision was not made lightly and after many weeks of meetings and

talking with other volunteers, we have decided to take a break for 2017, and we intend to continue with Christmas in the Park next year.”

News of the decision to not hold the event this year drew a lot of attention on social media yesterday with visitors to the Guardian Facebook page expressing their dismay.

Farmer fears Labour victory

If a Labour-led government is elected this weekend the negative effect on New Zealand will be immense, a long-serving and successful Mid Canterbury farmer says.

Alan Pye, who has interests in a variety of farming operations in New Zealand and overseas, said some of the policies he had heard Labour leader Jacinda Ardern advocate in recent weeks would result in the national economy going backwards very quickly.

“It frightens the hell out of me what’s going to happen to farming if Labour gets in. What they’re talking about doing, it’ll wreck the place.”

Pye said it reminded him of what happened when Labour won power under David Lange at the end of 1984.

“By the end of 1985 commodity prices had fallen by half and interest rates had doubled,” he said. “It was tough, unbearable for many farmers.”

Some were forced to sell up, he said, while others like himself had to give up on things like insurance just to pay the bills.

Pye said he went to see his bank manager one day in 1985 to be told his $100,000 overdraft was reducing to $50,000 immediately.

“I said ‘I can’t operate like that’.

He said ‘tough, not my problem, it’s yours’. Those in authority higher up (at the bank) had lost faith in farming.”

To get by he had to cancel his home and contents insurance and cut the insurance he had on his farm machinery back to third party.

“There was just not enough money in the system to pay for those things.”

Pye fears the new round of taxes Labour is likely to introduce will have a similar effect.

“Despite what people might think there’s not that much money in farming.”

He said many farmers already paid quite a lot to irrigation schemes to enable water to be

pumped onto their properties, so another tax could prove too much for some.

“It’s not cheap,” he said, “and if they’re going to charge more for water, then that’s going to be shocking. We can’t afford to pay any more for water. It will put people out of business.

“New Zealand will slow down straight away.”

As for the supposed poor state of Canterbury waterways that money collected from a water tax is to go towards cleaning up, Pye isn’t having a bar of it.

“I travel up and down the Canterbury Plains and I’d be happy to swim in the rivers and drink the water of any of them, as long as they’re not in flood.”

Other taxes being talked about

by Labour also concern him, such as a proposed land tax.

“That one will cost me close to $1 million a year.”

The introduction of water and land taxes, or restrictions on cow numbers, would not just affect farmers, he said, as any changes to the costs of production would see prices for vegetables and milk go up, which would be felt in urban areas.

Policies that would bring in wage rises without considering what businesses could afford to pay staff would also have a negative impact further down the track, he said.

Australia, where he has business interests, was a prime example of what could happen, he said.

Increasing wage and superannuation demands that began under Julia Gillard’s government were also costing people their jobs in the longer term, he said, as

businesses looked at more costeffective ways of production.

Pye gave the example of an ice cream bombe stick factory that he co-owned, employing 38 people. A 9 per cent wage increase on top of a 9 per cent increase in employer contributed superannuation proved to be too much for the company and something had to give.

“An extra 18 per cent on the wage bill meant staff had to be put off,” he said. “Now the ice cream bombe sticks are imported from France, warehoused in Sydney and then distributed from there.”

Rising wage demands at a potato, onion and carrot growing operation he owns with his son Mark in South Australia are also about to lead to significant changes.

It’s a big operation, growing

about 1500 hectares of potatoes, 600 hectares of carrots and the same area in onions.

However, due to the pressure for increased wages, Pye’s son Mark went to Europe to buy stateof-the-art grading equipment, which takes a photo of each onion or potato, then size grades it to whatever set size is required.

The equipment can also judge the internal quality of the crop better than humans, Pye said.

The result – about two-thirds of the staff employed by the company will lose their jobs.

Pye said he would hate to see agribusinesses in New Zealand be put under similar financial pressure from unnecessary taxes and wage rises that would, in the end, result in business failures and job losses.

He hopes it won’t come to that.

Biggest donation so far

Thanks to Ashburton’s generosity and ANZ’s hard working staff, a record-breaking cheque was handed over to the Mid Canterbury Cancer Society yesterday.

The amount raised at the ANZ’s Daffodil Day was a whopping $23,000 – gathered via a sausage sizzle, branch raffle, super rugby

competition and quiz night, along with donations from customers.

“We’re absolutely rapt,” Mandy Casey of the Cancer Society said.

“It’s amazing and we’re very grateful.”

The sum is the most ANZ have ever raised, and is more than $5000 over last year’s total.

ANZ staff member Hayden Marshall said $19,000 alone came

from the quiz night on August 31.

“The vibe on quiz night was amazing – it was a really good atmosphere,” he said.

Seventy-five teams competed, and a range of sponsors jumped on board to offer prizes including a rugby jersey and a 20 minute helicopter ride with Richie McCaw. Though ANZ support the Cancer Society on a national scale,

branches are in charge of organising their own fundraising initiatives for different districts and connecting with other local sponsors.

The funds raised by ANZ Ashburton will stay local and go towards tackling cancer in Mid Canterbury.

“It’s really amazing, the generosity of Ashburton,” Marshall said.

Henderson loses appeal to alter restrictions A Christchurch property developer who was bankrupted twice has failed in his appeal against a judge’s decision to restrict his ability to manage a business and accrue debt.

David Ian Henderson, who has numerous convictions for tax offences, was bankrupted for the second time in 2010 owing between $100-150 million, but the High

Court discharged the bankruptcy earlier this year.

The discharge came with restrictions, including that Henderson could not control or manage a business for the next six years, personally guarantee the debts of any person or entity, or be employed by a business controlled by his relatives.

The ruling, published last year, said Henderson’s 2010 bankruptcy

had been caused by personal guarantees given to cover company and associates’ debts, and his inability to pay tax.

Henderson took the matter to the Court of Appeal to argue the judge’s process for deciding on restrictions.

He claimed the judge erred in imposing the conditions without taking his post-bankruptcy conduct into account, and by making this

error, the judge breached Henderson’s rights to natural justice.

In the Court of Appeal’s decision, released yesterday, Justice Rhys Harrison said the claim the judge had shown bias towards Henderson “could not possibly succeed”, and that if anything, the judge’s decision not to look at the allegations was likely favourable to Henderson.

“Huge loss for Ashburton, it was the one big community event that involves a lot of people,” one commenter said.

Last year 11,000 people flocked to the Ashburton Domain to take in the night’s entertainment – which included a performance from Kiwi music legend, Dave Dobbyn.

As well as some wellknown and respected musicians, the event also included a lot of local talent.

Anderson said that the night took a lot of organisation and the desire to bring a high quality product each year was one of the key goals, and the threat of not being able to do that for various reasons this year were a big part of the decision not to hold the event this year.

“I am a firm believer of doing something well, or not at all,” Anderson said.

“What you see on the night is a fraction of the year’s effort.

“The amount of preparation hours that goes into band and performers rehearsals, dance routines, stage design and the organisation of countless volunteers on their own is immense.”

Organisers have promised that the cancellation of the 2017 event won’t spell the end for Christmas in the Park and that there would be a strong focus on seeing the event returning in 2018.

Disqualified indefinitely A 21-year-old Ashburton man who admitted his third drink driving charge was sentenced to six months’ community detention and disqualified from driving indefinitely when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Vernon Mac Neilsen Te Moananui, a builder, blew 702mcg when he was stopped by police in the early hours of August 11.

The patrol had noted his vehicle speeding at 121km/h, with passengers in the car, and followed him.

Judge Joanna Maze also sentenced Te Moananui to supervision for six months. The combined sentence includes a curfew that allows him to continue his work as a builder.

The judge said Te Moananui was already subject to the conditions of a zero alcohol licence when he was stopped.

“It is serious offending.”

Adam Mark Chamberlain, a high country shepherd, admitted a charge of careless use after falling asleep at the wheel and crashing off the Hinds highway in the early hours of May 28.

Police withdrew a second charge of driving with excess alcohol. Prosecutor Andrew McRae said Chamberlain was driving north on the highway about 5.30am when he fell asleep and his vehicle left the road and slid into a ditch.

He was fined $350 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Tina Marie Leef admitted driving while disqualified on Chalmers Avenue on June 12.

She had two similar previous convictions.

She was sentenced to 40 hours’ community work and disqualified from driving for six months from December 12, when her current disqualification expires.

Kevin Francis Cunnard, 61, could have his car confiscated after admitting a charge of driving while disqualified.

Cunnard was stopped by police on Hendersons Road on August 25. He said he knew he was not allowed to drive but needed to get to work.

He was remanded to October 30 for sentence.

Aaron Christopher Robinson was remanded to October 30 for sentence after admitting charges of wilful damage, assault with a blunt instrument, driving while disqualified and refusing to give a blood specimen.

Police said Robinson and the assault victim had a history of issues and in March this year Robinson followed him to a Hinds house where an argument ensued.

Robinson used a crowbar to smash a window of the victim’s car and also used the metal tool to deliver a blow to the victim’s knee.

The driving charges arose in June when Robinson was found asleep, slumped over the wheel of a vehicle on Cracroft Maronan Road. The motorist who found him called emergency services and Robinson fled.

Police finally located him and took him to a police station, where he refused to give a specimen of his blood for alcohol analysis.

A man who took another man’s debit card and used it to buy food, alcohol and cigarettes via paywave spent nearly $500.

Gareth Eyre, 26, admitted taking the card from a wallet left on a table at the Methven Camping Ground on July 13. He unlawfully used it 25 times.

Eyre was sentenced to 90 hours’ community work.

Sharon Louise Wallace was discharged under section 147 of the Criminal Procedure Act after admitting a charge of careless use causing injury.

Wallace was driving her son when their car hit a pothole on a rural road and crashed. Duty solicitor Paul Bradford said she

Harrison Alexander Roysmith, 19, was fined $750 and ordered to pay court costs of $130 after admitting driving drunk on August 26. He was also disqualified from driving for six months.

Police said Roysmith was spotted driving on West Street by concerned road users who followed him to George Street, where they managed to take his keys and call police.

Roysmith blew 872mcg and denied he had been behind the wheel.

Lawyer Roz Burnside said the university student had learned a huge lesson.

Quinten Russell John Gordon was sentenced to six months’ community detention and six months’ supervision when he appeared for sentence on a charge of assault with a weapon.

Gordon had visited the victim and got into a fight with him, grabbing a kitchen knife and inflicting wounds on the victim’s head and shoulder. The wound to the head needed four stitches, the shoulder wound three stitches.

Rowan James Docos was sentenced to 120 hours’ com-

munity work and nine months’ supervision after a fight with his brother.

Docos used the side of a meat cleaver to strike his brother on the head and body, as an incentive to get him out of bed for work. The cleaver left minor cuts and bruises.

Judge Maze said the brothers had been sharing accommodation and that Docos was also injured in the altercation.

An Ashburton man who admitted assaulting a man in public for money was sentenced to 130 hours’ community work.

Daniel Francis Baumber, 24, was also sentenced to nine months’ supervision and ordered to pay his victim $500 for emotional harm.

Judge Maze said the man was still fearful about being out in public following the assault at Caroline Bay last December.

Baumber admitted drinking alcohol, then walking behind the victim demanding money and wanting to know how much he had in his wallet.

Lawyer Gretchen Hart said Baumber wanted to apologise to his victim and let him know he was not an angry person.

Judge Maze said the conviction for a charge of assault with intent to rob also came under the three strikes sentencing for violent crimes.

If Baumber was to go to jail for a similar charge in the future, he would not be granted parole or early release.

Richard Anthony Armstrong, who has not held a driver’s licence since 1984, was sentenced to 80 hours’ community work after he admitted two charges of driving while disqualified. He was also placed under supervision for six months.

Armstrong admitted driving when he shouldn’t on October 30 last year and January 24. He was disqualified from driving for 12 months, though he is working through the process of trying to get his licence back.

One killed in crash A person has been killed in a two-car collision in Christchurch yesterday. Emergency services were called to the scene on Queen Elizabeth Drive, in Marshland, just after 1.30pm. Police initially said one of the people involved was trapped and critically injured. They later confirmed one of the drivers of the vehicles had died at the scene.

Wheelchair returned A top Paralympic sailor’s wheelchair has been handed in to police after it was taken from a Northland jetty. The disappearance of the custom-made wheelchair from Waitangi jetty on Sunday sparked widespread outrage and left Chris Sharp, who competed in the Rio Paralympics and coaches disabled sailors, with no way of getting around. Mr Sharp was “over the moon” to get it back and overwhelmed by the offers of help after word of the theft got out on social media.

Henry (Pop) notches up century

A hard-working handyman has just earned the title of Ashburton’s newest centurion.

Henry Hunt entered the world 100 years ago on September 19, 1917, and will be marking the major milestone at Radius Millstream after big festivities on the weekend.

The Ashburton born-andraised engineer, muso and bowler is known as Pop to many, and has had dozens of relatives and close friends come from near and far to pay their congratulations.

“I don’t think he expected to reach 100,” son Gavin Hunt said, “But he always wanted a letter from the Queen.”

Henry’s “love of fixing stuff” also inspired creative efforts from his children to mark the occasion.

Gavin has been working for the past two years to restore a 1903 Darracq car which Henry’s father once drove, and was able to give his Pop a birthday ride on the weekend.

Henry’s daughters Lynda and Robin also put together a biography of his life, featuring poetry, photos and fond family memories.

Whilst Henry wasn’t in great health for the festivities on Saturday at the Silver Band Hall, Gavin said it was still a “nice day,” attended by more than 100 rela-

and 33 great grandchildren. He lived in a home in Harrison Street for 69 years until January this

year, and worked in engineering until he was 98.

People urged to tell story of New Zealand’s role in Antarctica Mid Canterbury artists, writers, educators and media people are being invited to help tell the story of New Zealand’s role in Antarctica.

For the past six decades, the New Zealand Antarctic programme has offered a visit to Scott Base as part of a community engagement programme.

The programme is an inte-

gral part of Antarctica New Zealand’s mandate to increase public awareness of the science and operations in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.

“It’s important people understand that it’s not just an isolated continent but one of New Zealand’s closest and most influential neighbours; what happens in Antarctica will impact the future

of our planet,” said Antarctica New Zealand Chief Executive Peter Beggs.

“That’s why we’re collaborating with media, education experts, artists and writers to help tell our story and make Antarctic science more relevant to the public.”

This programme encourages applicants to submit proposals of the highest quality. The oppor-

A major blow for Ashburton Matt Markham

W

e don’t have many events here in Ashburton where a really large portion of the community are able to get together.

So, the news out yesterday that the always-popular Christmas in the Park event was not going to be held this year, was a bit of a blow for the community.

It’s a frustrating situation for all, really.

Frustrating for the New Life Church group who have really driven this event each year and have now had to make the hard decision not to hold it in 2017 and frustrating for the thousands of Ashburton locals who pack up the family each year and make their way to the Ashburton Domain to take in a great night’s entertainment.

The biggest worry though is that if you don’t hold something once, then the chances of holding it ever again are automatically diminished.

It can be easy to say that’s it, we’re not coming back from this and that’s the end.

Hopefully that’s not the case with Christmas in the Park.

We are blessed to have some incredible talent when it comes to entertainment – faces that we see through the year in shows, playing in bands, dancing at schools and at events and Christmas in the Park is like combining all of them into one great night.

A lot of those who are asked to perform really enjoy the privilege too and will be disappointed to not have the chance to showcase their talents this year.

But does this open an opportunity for someone else to step in and fill the void?

We have this wonderful blueprint of a successful event that has a strong following and is well-attended – we just need someone to take the bull by the horns and get into action.

Perhaps it could be a role for the Ashburton District Council to undertake.

The thought of the local governing body having a major input into the event and overseeing its planning and execution would give a lot of stability to its future and wouldn’t hurt the council’s image either.

Because, if we don’t do something about it, we may see people heading to Christchurch for their annual Christmas in the Park fix instead – and there’s the potential that after experiencing that, they won’t come back at all.

New tax grab possible just as prices start to recover O

ver the past six months the sheep meat industry has seen a lift in lamb and mutton prices to such an extent that lamb is currently selling for around $7/kg and mutton around $4/kg – levels not seen for six years.

For sheep farmers it has been a long hard slog in the intervening years, made all the more difficult by tough climatic conditions, particularly on the east coast of the South Island.

Farmers are accustomed to dealing with what the climate throws at them and in these parts drought is not uncommon.

But it really gets difficult when two drought years in a row occur, as happened 2014 to 2016.

On-farm supplements ran out early in 2015 and the market drove the price of silage, balage and grazing up.

Combined with low wool and store lamb prices, most farms accumulated more debt to get capital stock through.

The good news is that the prospects for sheep meats for the coming season are positive and, if the climate co-operates, many dryland farmers may be able to repay some of the debt that has accrued over the past few years.

once told me “in farming no matter what you do something always comes along and stuffs it up”.

Maybe that bump on the horizon is the general election.

Depending on the make-up of the new government, rural New Zealand may well be facing a raft of new and punitive taxes that will make life on the land far more difficult.

The impact on provincial New Zealand of some of the new taxes that have been proposed will be debilitating to the towns and businesses that rely on the farming sector to survive.

In the sheep industry the simple fact is there has been little or no profit for a number of years (that is why the national flock has shrunk from 60 odd million in the early 1990s to 27 million or so today).

I believe that implementation of new taxes that are clearly directed at the rural sector will result in what I’m calling farma-

geddon.

The family farm will be under the most pressure and options will be limited – intensify, borrow to continue farming, or sell.

None of these options are good for NZ Inc. Intensification has environmental implications, more debt has economic implications and sales will result in larger farms and more corporate farming operations.

Here are a few numbers: ■ A water tax set at 2 cents per cubic metre is expected by Irrigation New Zealand to cost $64 million per year, with $41 million of that cost to be felt in Canterbury, with $16 million in Ashburton alone and $8 million in Otago.

■ By putting agriculture in the Emissions Trading Scheme, assuming a $25 per tonne emissions price, the cost to livestock farming of including methane and nitrous oxide would be $830 million per year. Labour says it will phase this in over time, with 10 per cent in the first year, or $83 million.

■ The pace of transition will be critical, but if it is anything like the ETS as it was intended in 2008, it won’t be long before farmers are

having to meet the full cost regardless of whether or not there are cost-effective technologies available to help reduce emissions.

■ A capital gains tax will take time to take effect but a tax on land value at a rate of even half a per cent is likely to cost rural landowners at least $525 million per year.

This is based on a 2009 estimate of the unimproved value of rural land of $105 billion. It will be higher today. At least Labour has flip-flopped again and announced voters would have another say on any CGT or land tax implementation in 2020.

It is frustrating to me that some politicians in this country are so out of touch with the provinces that they would be willing to throw us on the sacrificial fire to drum up the urban vote.

Suu Kyi to break silence Aung San Suu Kyi was supposed to be addressing the United Nations, and the world, this week at the annual general assembly in New York.

Instead, the de facto leader of Burma will give a televised speech in her own country, breaking her near-silence on the humanitarian crisis as Rohingya refugees flee violence in Burma and pour into neighbouring Bangladesh.

Suu Kyi’s speech will be scrutinised intensely, with the UN chief yesterday calling it her “last chance” to stop the bloodshed.

“If she does not reverse the situation now, then I think the tragedy will be absolutely horrible, and unfortunately then I don’t see how this can be reversed in the future,” Antonio Guterres told the BBC. This week could prove pivotal for the crisis as Bangladeshi authorities struggle to get the refugee situation under control.

More than 410,000 people from the Rohingya minority Muslim group have now crossed the border.

Suu Kyi’s image as a human rights campaigner has been tarnished after she failed to intervene in the crackdown which started on August 25, when the military in Buddhist-majority Burma launched operations in

“It’s absolutely clear that the violence by the army needs to stop and that the return of the refugees has to be permitted and that the Rohingya should be given civil rights,” she said.

US tells Kim: Time is running out The Trump Administration escalated its rhetoric against North Korea, warning that time is running out for a peaceful solution between Kim Jong Un’s regime and the United States and its allies.

Administration officials said the risk from North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme is rising, and underscored that US President Donald Trump will confront the looming crisis at the UN General Assembly this week.

Trump, who spoke by phone to South Korean President Moon Jae In yesterday,

referred to Kim on Twitter as “Rocket Man” and asserted that “long gas lines” are forming in the North because of recent UN sanctions on oil imports.

Though Trump’s top aides emphasised that the administration is examining all diplomatic measures to rein in Pyongyang, they made it clear that military options remain on the table.

“If North Korea keeps on with this reckless behaviour, if the United States has to defend itself or defend its allies in any way, North Korea will

be destroyed,” UN Ambassador Nikki Haley said on CNN. “None of us want that. None of us want war. But we also have to look at the fact that you are dealing with someone [in Kim] who is being reckless, irresponsible and is continuing to give threats not only to the United States, but to all of its allies. So something is going to have to be done.”

The question remains, however, how realistic the Trump Administration’s threats are as the North quickly advances its nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities. Trump’s latest

tweets came two weeks after North Korea tested a nuclear device that experts said measured at 250 kilotons, 17 times the force of the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima in World War Two. Trump warned Kim last month that the North would feel the “fire and fury” of the United States if the regime continued its threats and destabilised the Korean Peninsula and East Asia. But Kim promptly responded with new threats and a round of new weapons tests.

Two murals by street artist Banksy have sprung up in central London. The works, marking the opening of an exhibition of works by American artist JeanMichel Basquiat, appeared in a tunnel close to the Barbican Centre. Banksy described the murals as an “(unofficial) collaboration” in a series of Instagram posts. Basquiat first rose to fame as a New York City graffiti artist, before turning his hand to painting. He died in 1988, aged just 27, from a suspected drug overdose.

Le Camporelle di Cavallino, a farmhouse in Lecce, southern Italy, has been slammed for its signage which indicates there are separate toilets for males, females and gay people.

Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald and her husband, musician Douglas Payne, have separated. Macdonald is known for her roles in movies including Trainspotting, Gosford Park, Nanny McPhee and No Country For Old Men – as well as TV. She appeared in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire for five seasons, receiving both Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Payne is the bassist for the Scottish band Travis.

Publicist Craig Bankey issued a statement saying that although the couple would have preferred to keep the information private, they separated several months ago, and are united in parenting their two children. They ask that their privacy be respected.

Big changes proposed after 2016 loss Shareholders in Westland Milk Products will vote next month on a package of proposed changes designed to improve its governance after the Hokitika-based cooperative last year reported a loss and offered a milk price well below those of its competitors.

The proposals follow an extensive governance review conducted by a sub-committee of the board that included co-opted shareholders, directors and a governance consultant, Westland said.

The review was sought by shareholders at last year’s annual meeting following criticism of the then board for its performance in a year that saw a $17 million loss

– and the lowest of any New Zealand dairy company payouts to shareholders.

“We believe the changes recommended will set the structure and tone of the governance of our cooperative, and better equip Westland for the opportunities and challenges ahead of us,” Westland Milk chairman Pete Morrison said in a statement.

The recommendations include a reduction in the number of Westland Board directors from 11 to eight, and a cut in the number of shareholder-elected directors from eight to five.

The eligibility criteria for all director roles has been reviewed using best practice models and

benchmarking against companies similar to Westland, the coop said.

A director “pipeline” will be developed with clear process for nurturing highly capable future Westland board directors and governance leadership.

The proposals follow an extensive governance review conducted by a sub-committee of the board that included co-opted shareholders, directors and a governance consultant.

“This was an independent, robust and highly analytical review undertaken at the request of shareholders,” Morrison said.

The shareholder meeting will be held on October 5.

A major travel insurer has said people won’t be able to make claims to cover any extra travel or accommodation expenses caused by the Auckland Airport fuel crisis if they bought the policy after 10am on Sunday.

On Sunday, thousands of travellers faced delays and disruptions to their travel plans amid flight cancellations caused by an aviation fuel shortage after the pipeline carrying the fuel burst on Thursday. Problems are expected to continue this week.

But in a statement on its website Southern Cross Travel Insurance said as the situation was not considered to be unexpected from 10am on Sunday, extra expenses would not be covered for policies taken out after then.

A large traditional kauri weatherboard four-bedroom villa on a full flat Auckland site has been advertised for $599,000, just over half the city’s average price of $1 million.

In what appears to be a bargain and following low prices on TV3’s The Block NZ on Sunday night, the big house with stained glass windows and on a 704sq m site at 19 Woodhams Street in Beach Haven was advertised

by Ray White agents at the low price.

However, photographs indicate extensive work is required and advertising carried the rider that “Victoria needs a makeover”.

In an indication of the popularity of the sale, all open homes have now been cancelled and the site is under offer.

Auckland Council showed the full valuation of only $510,000 including land at $265,000. But that valuation was dated 2014.

The property has annual rates of $2424.14, the council’s website shows.

The chief executive of NZ Young Farmers is applauding the government’s announcement that Landcorp farms will be offered to young farmers.

Terry Copeland said National’s plans to give young New Zealand farmers the option of leasing farms before buying them was fantastic news, with many of the organisation’s members increasingly frustrated at the significant barriers they face to own land.

“This will offer an amazing opportunity for young people at a time when entry into farm ownership is becoming out of reach in today’s farming climate.”

Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy said National would direct Landcorp to offer farms for sale to young farmers as there was no clear public good coming from Crown ownership with little financial return to taxpayers.

Under the proposed policy, young farmers would have to work the land for five to 10 years, after which they could lease the farms before buying them.

While not all of Landcorp’s 140 farms will be sold due to Treaty claims and right of first refusal for iwi, some of the larger farms will be divided up into smaller units that are more appropriate for first time owners.

It is thought that the policy will help around 100 young farmers onto the land –

After a drier week and good growth, the heavy rain returned and managers of heavy soils will be wary of damage to pastures under soft conditions.

Westland shareholders are going to be asked for an AGM vote on a governance review that reduces the number of directors and improves the system to ensure the board has quality leadership and the company avoids any repeat of last year’s poor financial performance.

Report identifies strategy to increase lamb value New Zealand needs to increase investment in value-adding to its lamb exports, in the face of growing competition and changing dynamics in major markets, according to a new industry report.

Maximising the value of New Zealand lamb – the drive for value add, by agricultural banking specialist Rabobank, recommends a three-point plan to be part of value-adding strategy for the sector.

The report, published late last week, said New Zealand lamb exports are facing increased competition in key markets, from low-cost producers such as Brazil, increased global lamb production and growing consumption of lower-cost animal proteins.

And at the same time, it said, attentiveness to consumer demands in quality, convenience, experience, and health is becoming increasingly important.

Report author, Rabobank animal proteins analyst Blake Holgate, said those factors create both a need and an opportunity for the New Zealand lamb industry to compete on the basis of more than just price.

The report identifies a three-point

plan Rabobank believes should be part of New Zealand’s value-add strategy, focused on: ensuring New Zealand lamb is positioned as a premium product; continuous quality improvement and verification; and building consumer-focused value chains.

“In recent years we have seen New Zealand’s meat companies, along with industry partnerships like the Red Meat Profit Partnership (RMPP), make significant progress in developing strategies and tools to tackle each of these elements, however, further investment in these elements is required from participants right across the industry to improve lamb returns,” Holgate said.

Value can be added at production level, the report said, by continuing to improve lamb quality, increasing further processing and carcass utilisation for higher-value products and changing production systems to meet consumer preferences, such as organic and free-range – and by improved marketing and branding.

In order to position New Zealand lamb as a premium product, the report noted it was important to deliver a consistently high-quality eating experience, so consumers were willing to

pay more because the lamb came from New Zealand.

“This positioning needs to be supported by an effective branding story about New Zealand, which should identify and promote attributes about New Zealand lamb that distinguish it from competitors,” Holgate said.

“New Zealand’s 100 per cent grassfed production system is one attribute that is likely to be central to this as there are particular taste, health, environmental and animal welfare benefits associated with this system that resonate strongly with customers.”

Holgate said the RMPP is currently developing a brand story at an industry-wide level that would help to ensure consumers can quickly and easily understand what it is about New Zealand lamb that makes it a premium product.

“The industry level brand story should not deter individual companies from developing their own brand, however, it is important there is alignment and consistency between the brand stories of individual companies and the overall industry to ensure consumers are clear about what the New Zealand lamb brand stands for.”

Rabobank analyst Blake Holgate has said New Zealand needs to ensure its lamb is positioned as a premium product.

Disease outbreak a ‘wake-up call’

The recent mycoplasma bovis outbreak in South Canterbury/ North Otago, while traumatic for everyone involved, may yet have a silver lining for some farmers, a dairy industry leader says.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury Dairy spokesman Nathan Currie, who recently returned from Canada where he was of two

Mid Canterbury firemen involved in fighting wildfires in British Columbia, said the outbreak should be used by dairy farmers as a wake-up call.

“It’s a good opportunity for individual farmers to look at their own operation and then ask themselves ‘are we ready?’

“Everyone has to take responsibility,” he said, adding that dairy farmers needed to be sure about

animals’ history before transferring them to their own property, while also maintaining their NAIT (National Animal Identification and Tracing) records were up-to-date.

Thorough on-farm hygiene was also important.

Currie urged farmers who had not already done so to make sure they were doing everything within their own control to make

sure their farm and animals were as safe as they could be from the disease.

Although there were still some concerns among Mid Canterbury dairy farmers about the spread of mycoplasma bovis, Currie said it looked like the Ministry for Primary Industries’ tracing and testing programme was doing its job.

“But there is still a lot of fear out there that it could still get out,” he

said. “Farmers do need to be vigilant.”

Asparagus, bacon, sweetcorn mini frittatas These are great single serve frittatas and can be served serve hot or cold, at home or on a picnic.

8 eggs 1/2 C low-fat milk 1/2 C grated cheese (edam, tasty, mild etc) 400g fresh or tinned asparagus 6 rashers of bacon 1 tin of sweetcorn ■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Cut 12 15x15cm squares of baking paper and use these to line muffin tin.

■ Chop bacon into pieces and fry or grill whole rashers and then chop into small pieces.

■ Whisk the eggs, milk and cheese together and season with pepper. Combine sweetcorn.

■ Cut asparagus into 3cm sized pieces, keeping aside the tips

to decorate, and place cut stalks into the muffin tin.

■ Divide the egg mixture between all the frittatas.

■ Finish with asparagus tips and a crumble of blue cheese if using.

■ Place in the oven and bake for

15-20 minutes or until golden and the egg has set.

■ Note: You can also use this recipe for a large frittata. Simply pour the mix into a large baking dish.

Stella Wright ... lady coach

he team at Ashburton Museum have been busy installing a new exhibition.

This is something special for us as it has come all the way to Ashburton from the New Zealand Rugby Museum in Palmerston North. It’s still a long journey by train, truck and ferry to get a container across Cook Strait and down to Ashburton.

With all arrived safely, this container of exhibition components is the makings of the first exhibition to open in our new Kate and Hank Murney Room.

Titled Balls, Bullets & Boots: From Rugby Field to Battlefield, we knew this exhibition would be a story rich in sacrifice, perseverance, mateship and courage: qualities familiar to both rugby ground and war zone.

While installing the exhibition we are also already looking ahead, planning for the coming year when New Zealand will mark 125 years of women’s suffrage – the universal right to vote for all women in New Zealand.

Now just a few days prior to elections, it’s a singular right that’s readily take for granted.

Yet it is worth remembering that not so long ago, voting was a hard won milestone. Not just for New Zealand women, but women internationally, as many other countries would follow New Zealand’s lead over the decades to come.

Sadly, some are still to do so.

Coincidentally, while we head to the polls, today marks the 124th anniversary of that international milestone, when the suffrage bill was made into law by New Zealand’s, then all male, parliament, on September 19, 1893.

Exceptional players The Balls, Bullets & Boots exhibition features histories of many exceptional players, and is told through a series of Te Papastyle interactive components and hands-on activities.

It also includes a series of very clever video screens, embedded into highly realistic settings, such as window, trench dug-outs and more.

Past All Black captain, Anton Oliver, narrates the journey. The video sections are scripted from real life histories under the direction of well-known film maker, director Ian Mune.

Among those stories, the focus is on 15 exceptional All Blacks, and of most interest to us right now, one lady coach, the exceptional Stella Wright.

New roles Amongst the challenges and sacrifice, World War One was also a time that allowed women to quietly step into traditional male domains. Stella Wright was one such woman, and the role she took on was unusual, even in those trying times.

A headmistress hailing from Opunake School, Stella knew how important sport at home would be to keeping up morale. She knew the community well, and had herself been a student at the school. She would be its first – and for many years only – woman head as well.

At 29 she took on the role of coach for an enthusiastic schoolboy team.

At first a ‘ref’ she quickly learnt to

manage the game. The children promised to guide her as needed, and as she later recalled, while running on the field would call to her, “Blow the whistle Miss Hickey – blow the whistle!”

The team played many games throughout the district, and were only beaten once by Pihama School.

Stella’s successes Stella must have been a great coach. Her team remembered her fondly throughout their lives and several went on to successful rugby futures. One played league in England, another, George Harrison became a Maori All Black in 1934-35 while the legendary George Nepia was captain.

Stella later reminisced, “Despite the horrors of wartime, with its extra strain at home and school, we had lots of fun, particularly with the foot-

Verstappen blames Vettel After being on the receiving end of reckless driving at the Singapore Grand Prix, Max Verstappen was quick to blame Sebastian Vettel.

Verstappen was forced to retire from yesterday’s race after the first lap, the seventh time in 14 races that the Red Bull driver has failed to finish.

This time it wasn’t engine failure, like on several occasions this season, but Vettel causing a firstlap crash that was easily avoidable.

“When you’re fighting for a world championship you shouldn’t do that,” an upset Verstappen said of Vettel.

“It was not very clever.”

Race stewards cleared Vettel, whose miscalculated move ultimately forced his Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen and McLaren’s Fernando Alonso out of the race.

Although he had good cause to question Vettel, it was somewhat ironic coming from Verstappen.

The Dutch teen turns 20 at the end of September, but he already has a reputation of his own in Formula One. His aggressive, unapologetic, fearless – and even borderline dangerous – approach thrust Verstappen into the spotlight last season, almost as much as his superb driving highlighted his potential as a future world champion.

He became the youngest to win a race in Spain and to start from the front row of the grid in Monaco – at just 18 years old.

Then, at the Brazilian GP near the end of last season, he produced one of the finest performances in years.

It was a sheer masterclass in overtaking as he carved his way through the field in driving rain, and had F1 observers in awe at the sheer brilliance of his driving.

But he also strongly upset drivers along the way in 2016 – none more so than Vettel and Raikkonen.

Raikkonen criticised him sternly at the Hungarian GP and even more heavily at the Belgian GP. At the Mexican GP in October, Vettel completely lost his cool, delivering a barrage of expletives about Verstappen over race radio.

Yesterday, Verstappen was the one complaining.

After trudging back to his garage, he lamented his bad luck.

“I was in the middle without doing anything wrong,” he said of Sunday’s chaotic Turn 1 incident.

“If I make a mistake myself and go off, that’s a different story.”

Yet just two months ago, even

his own Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo publicly criticised Verstappen at the Hungarian GP. Ricciardo’s race was over after Turn 2 with Verstappen the perpetrator, recklessly swerving into him and unable to contain his urge to overtake.

Verstappen subsequently apologised to Ricciardo.

Lewis Hamilton eventually claimed the win at Singapore, with Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo finishing second for Red Bull and Hamilton’s Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas third.

For Ricciardo it was a disappointing result as he didn’t have the race day pace to match Hamilton in either the wet or dry.

The result was a fourth consecutive podium at the Singapore Grand Prix and the Australian cut a somewhat frustrated figure on the podium.

“I can’t win the bloody thing,” Ricciardo lamented.

Three top New Zealand drivers converged on the spectacular Circuit of the Americas in Texas over the weekend, but only two came away with victory. Racing in FIA Formula 4 USA, Southland’s Brendon Leitch was figuratively rubbing shoulders with two great Kiwi race drivers – Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber were on their winning way in the main event, but things were tougher for Leitch, who encountered difficult conditions in a car that was down on speed compared to his rivals.

McLaughlin still happy He didn’t win but Scott McLaughlin heads to Bathurst happy and confident after growing his lead over Jamie Whincup in the Supercars championship at the Sandown 500.

New Zealand driver McLaughlin, paired with Alex Premat through the Enduro series, couldn’t get close enough to race winners Cam Waters and Richie Stanaway on Sunday. But the DJR Team Penske man sprayed champagne from the second step on the podium, and for the Kiwi, that was good enough.

“It was our main goal to try to beat our championship contenders,” he said. “The best thing for us was to finish second and ahead of everyone else.”

Dixon forced to settle for third in championship Josef Newgarden won his first IndyCar championship by closing out the best year of his career as the top driver at Team Penske.

Newgarden turned in a nearly flawless performance yesterday at Sonoma Raceway to prevent his Penske team-mates, as well as four-time champion Scott Dixon, from taking the title away from him.

Penske driver Simon Pagenaud used pit strategy to win the race,

but Newgarden finished second to take the title by 13 points.

Newgarden is only the second American in 11 years to win the IndyCar title, joining 2012 champion Ryan Hunter-Reay.

The Tennessee driver held off Dixon, as well as team-mates Pagenaud, Will Power and Helio Castroneves to win the championship.

Of the five drivers mathematically eligible to win the title in the

finale, four came from Penske.

Pagenaud won the race in a last gasp effort to defend the IndyCar title he won last year for Penske.

Although his strategy was different from his team-mates, it put Pagenaud out front after his final stop. Newgarden tried to catch him, was briefly aggressive as he attempted to reclaim the lead, then had to back off and think about the bigger picture.

“I tried to get him, but I also

tried not to do anything dumb for the team. This has been a team effort”, Newgarden said.

Power finished third in the race, while Dixon was fourth.

It was an uphill fight for Dixon, in a Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing, and he didn’t have the same pace as the Penske cars all weekend.

That meant Dixon would have to rely on an aggressive strategy to have a shot, but Newgarden and

the Penske drivers were far too quick in their Chevrolets. When Dixon tried to pit off sequence, he felt Castroneves copied the strategy in an effort to help Newgarden.

“He was just a massive roadblock,” Dixon said about Castroneves. “It was circumstance. Once we got clear track, we were able to hunt them down.”

The final standings went Newgarden, Pagenaud, Dixon, Castroneves and Power.

Time on-field ‘invaluable’

The Hanan Shield Girls’ Rugby side picked up some valuable game time on Saturday in their mini-competition against Canterbury and Canterbury Development.

The side, which has seven members from the AshHutt Combined Girls’ 1st XV, picked up two wins at the Ashburton Showgrounds, defeating Canterbury 19-12, before thumping Canterbury Development 45-0.

South Canterbury rugby development officer Caro Rhodes said despite trailing Canterbury early, the side were able to find their rhythm and open up a 19-7 lead, only for Canterbury to score a try in the final few minutes.

“It is good to have the pre-season matches.

“They don’t count for anything but getting the playtime in is good,” she said.

“It was good having it in Ashburton as there are seven players from Mid Canterbury, and it was

a chance for parents to watch the girls and a bit of a break from travelling as they travel down to Timaru twice a week to train.”

The team will play in another mini-competition this Saturday in Geraldine, with Otago joining Canterbury and Canterbury Development in the teams that the Hanan Shield side will face.

These matches are preparation for a tournament that will be held in Christchurch from October 1 to October 3, where the side will face off against Tasman,

Southland, Otago, Canterbury Development and Canterbury.

“We have a good crew of girls, they are a good, strong team and there are also good reserves,” Rhodes said.

“We only have about four leaving the team at the end of this year so we have lots of strength and depth to build on in the future.

“The Hanan Shield Girls’ Rugby has a really strong name and the sport as a whole is on the up, which is quite exciting.”

The Wallabies are reaping the rewards of a torrid fitness training load that contributed to their belowpar June series. Following their impressive 45-20 win over Argentina, coach Michael Cheika revealed he’d taken a risk by loading up the players in a bid to have them fitter through the Rugby Championship. During the June series Australia suffered a shock loss to Scotland and almost fell to Italy but Cheika said it was now paying off. All Blacks doing the basics better than anyone else

I

had my reservations about the Springboks before this test – and I expressed them publicly, so please don’t think I’m being wise after the fact.

I suspected they weren’t as good as everyone said they were.

They have made some strides, yes, but once the All Blacks got going, it was clear they were in a different league.

What was the foundation of this remarkable victory?

The key was the All Blacks’ ability to do the basics well and at this, they must be considered the best in the world by far.

I could talk about the razzle-dazzle and the brilliance of the All Blacks as individuals and a team, but it starts with the simple things: passing, tackling and kicking.

The All Blacks play with such fluidity that you may not notice the accuracy of their passing, but it’s what sets them apart.

It happens with a natural instinct and skill set – all the passes are accurate and in front whether it is a forward or back involved.

The micro skill of the forwards interchanging right on the contact line, in which they slip a pass either before or after contact, is remarkable.

Everything flows from that.

But with South Africa, some passing was to a team-mate’s shoulder.

Players aren’t punching on to the ball and are compromised as attackers.

It is a small, subtle part of the All Blacks’ game but something they do very well.

Another is what they do on defence.

Yes, they make tackles but there is an intelligence to the defence.

It’s about players making good decisions.

How and where are they tackling?

Are they hitting the ball and slowing the resulting breakdown, or are they chopping

the legs and going for turnovers?

It’s also about whether or not to go to the breakdown.

South Africa time and again sent players into the breakdown when they didn’t need to. Often, the All Blacks only had the tackler involved.

If the opposition has secured the ball and you can’t turn it over, it’s better to be on your feet than flop into a ruck.

Often when the Boks got the ball, they had 14 All Blacks on their feet staring at them.

The All Blacks’ kicking game is very accurate – Beauden Barrett and Damian McKenzie found space and grass with their kicks. Aaron Smith’s box kicks gave players the opportunity to challenge for the ball.

It all adds up.

Finally, you look at the set piece and for all of Dane Coles’ ability to transform the hooker position with his running and passing game, his ability to scrum and

throw the ball into the lineout is often overlooked.

But he’s so good at it. He is the most accurate lineout thrower in the game.

In the opening minutes, the All Blacks scrum was in a little trouble, but they fixed it, and fast, and that’s an indication of the leadership within the team and their understanding of the basics.

The scrum was a potential issue and they knew it could have caused them difficulties but it was an area in which over the whole test they arguably had the better of the Boks in the finish.

Rugby is built on these foundations.

Do them and you have a chance to turn on the sort of entertainment the All Blacks showed at QBE Stadium.

This was a reality check for the Boks, I think everyone can see that.

The challenge for them now is how they go about fixing it and in particular their adherence to the basics.

Kaino back in the black Veteran Jerome Kaino has been named in the All Blacks squad after departing the team for personal reasons last month.

Kaino left the squad on the eve of the All Blacks Bledisloe Cup clash with Australia in Sydney.

Fellow loose forward Matt Todd, lock Patrick Tuipulotu and prop Jeffery Toomaga-Allen have also re-joined the squad for the final two matches of the Rugby Championship against Argentina and South Africa.

The All Blacks are resting six key players from the squad to face Argentina in their next Rugby Championship test.

Dagg has a knee injury which may need surgery, potentially ruling him out for the season.

Already missing for the rest of the 2017 with injury are original Rugby Championship squad members Jordie Barrett, Owen Franks and Joe Moody, while Ben Smith has taken up a sabbatical.

Marshall said Boyd’s return would give the raging underdogs the lift required to defy their woeful record against Melbourne.

The Broncos have won just four of 23 games against the Storm since the six time premiers downed them to claim the 2006 crown, ensuring their longest title drought.

“He is one of the best leaders I have played under,” Marshall said of Boyd. “It’s his ability to get teams up for games, to calm the team down before games and under the posts when the opposition scores.

“And when Darius is running the ball back at 100 miles an hour and doing the carries we know he can do – it lifts the team.”

Brisbane will also be sweating on winger Corey Oates (concussion) and forwards Jai Arrow, Sam Thaiday (head knocks) and Tevita Pangai Junior (hamstring). Oates appeared the biggest risk after being taken off by a medicab following a sickening collision with Milford in the 21st minute.

The Ashburton Junior Athletics Club is gearing up for a busy season on the track and field.

The season starts on October 18, and is open to children aged between seven and 14. Members have the opportunity to compete at the Colgate Games, as well as at inter-club competitions throughout the season.

This year the Colgate Games will be held in Timaru, for what will be the 40th anniversary of the event.

“It will be the 40th year of the Games so it should be a really big event and a lot of fun, and it is in Timaru which is great,” secretary Alanna Peck said.

The club hosts training every Wednesday evening from 5.30pm to 7pm, weather dependent, with a season with the club costing $60.

“It is a really cool club and the kids really enjoy it, and it’s a great cheap sport,” Peck said.

“We have great competitions such as the Rakaia Cup, which is held against Selwyn which is a lot of fun.

“All the gear is new and there are great parents that volunteer to help run the club.”

All options still on the table Domestic Group One challenges await the well-performed Volkstok’n’barrell, although a return to Australia hasn’t been ruled out for the six-year-old.

The spring focus for the gelding is firstly on this Saturday’s Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate (1600m) at Hastings, but it is the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2000m) a fortnight later that he is tipped to be even more competitive in.

“We certainly want to go back for the Livamol,” said Donna Logan, who trains at Ruakaka with Chris Gibbs.

“We think that is the best race for him.”

Plans beyond the third leg of the Hawke’s Bay Triple Crown series on October 7 have yet to be confirmed.

“At this point in time we will probably stay in New Zealand, but you never say never.

“Have horse can travel,” Logan said.

Volkstok’n’barrell has made three crossings of the Tasman and won the Gr.1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) in 2015.

He also placed in the Gr.1 ATC Derby (2400m) and in the Gr.2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) during last year’s Queensland winter carnival.

HAYWARD, Peter David (Cob) – On Friday, September 15, 2017, after a short illness, Pete died at home. Much loved husband and best friend of Maryanne Hearn.

Son of Harry and Valda, brother of Barry, and brotherin-law of Jonathan, and Katie.

“Cob” was a much loved uncle and godfather.

Sport Hewitt a shattered man Lleyton Hewitt believes his youthful Davis Cup team will bounce back from the bitter experience of this weekend’s 3-2 semi-final loss to Belgium. Leading 2-1 after two days of play, Hewitt was hugely confident of booking a first final appearance in 14 years going into yesterday’s reverse singles rubbers.

However, inspired by David Goffin’s magnificent display in defeating Nick Kyrgios in four sets, Steve Darcis brushed aside a shellshocked Jordan Thompson 6-4 7-5 6-2 in the decider to the delight of a delirious home crowd in Brussels.

More than 50 karate students from Ashburton and around Canterbury gathered in Ashburton over the weekend for the JION Karate Ashburton Gasshuku.

The Gasshuku, or seminar, saw New Zealand national team

coach Duane Monk, New Zealand coaching council members Gene Browne and Kevin Plaisted attending, as well as former German national team member Dieter Steinegg present to lend some of their knowledge.

“It was good and it was great to see the students learn a lot of new things,” chief instructor

Thorsten Windhorst said.

“As an instructor I could already see that students were coming away with more motivation and more spirit.”

With four spaces running classes over the weekend it was a busy time, Windhorst said, with parents in the kitchen preparing food to ensure everyone was fed.

The highly experienced tutors took the students through not only normal karate education, but also lessons around weapons and self defence training.

“It is something that is not normally taught in karate, so it was quite special for them,” he said.

Leishman takes BMW Australia’s Marc Leishman has smashed Tiger Woods’ tournament record in scoring a wire-to-wire victory at the US PGA Tour’s rich BMW Championship in Chicago.

Starting the final round with a fiveshot lead, 33-year-old Leishman carded a four-under-par 67 at Conway Farms to finish at 23 under par, five strokes clear of Rickie Fowler (67) and Justin Rose (65) who tied for second.

Bogey costs Ko a shot at the title A bogey on the final hole has cost Lydia Ko a chance at a third major title.

Ko was tied for the lead coming into the 54th and final hole at the rain-shortened Evian Championship, but she couldn’t execute on the tricky par four, bogeying the last and dropping back to finish in a share of third at eight-under par for the tournament.

Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist won her second major in a playoff, beating American Brittany Altomare after both players carded fantastic final rounds of 66 to

leap up 10 spots into contention.

Ko finished one shot back, with her third placing her best finish in a major in her last six attempts.

In the end, it was hard for anyone to match the stellar rounds of Altomare and Nordqvist. As they made their rise, most of the overnight leaders fell away, with Ko one of the few exceptions.

Birdies on holes three and four kept Ko in touch but par fives were a problem for Ko’s short driving game, and a bogey on the 13th looked to have ended her chances of contention.

A stunning chip-in on the 15th, flopping a shot from the rough and running it into the cup, launched her back into the picture. All of a sudden, Ko was at nine-under, and four players were tied for the lead with just three holes to play.

On the par four 18th however.

A slightly off-centre drive left Ko in the first cut of rough on the right, needing to clear a sizeable pond to make the green. Ko grabbed the fairway wood, and while she avoided the water hazard, her approach landed in the rough to the left of the green.

Ko’s putter deserted her at the wrong moment, leaving the 20-year-old to complete a twounder 69, and missing out on the playoff.

Despite the ending, Ko’s performance makes it two consecutive strong weeks, following her second place in Indianapolis the week prior.

The former world number one will be a good chance to continue that strong form when she tees up at the New Zealand Women’s Open, starting on September 28 at Auckland’s Windross Farm Golf Course.
