Ashburton District ratepayers might feel hard done by when rates rise each year, but their average rates bill is the fifth lowest in New Zealand. The annual Taxpayers Organisation’s ratepayers’ report shows Ashburton’s average rate as $1850 for the year to

June 30, significantly higher than low rate award-winner Southland, $1737. South Waikato is second lowest, Mackenzie, third, and Grey, at $1846, inched Ashburton out by $4 for fourth slot. While the district still has some of the lowest rates in New Zealand, its ranking has slipped from the previous year where it came in at second place.

The average increase in rates across New Zealand’s councils last year was $90, however, the Ashburton District’s rate increase ran at an average of $199.
