Probe into crash fatality continues Investigations into a fatal accident that claimed the life of a young Mid Canterbury apprentice gardener have entered their seventh week.

Twenty-one-year old, David Morgan Muir of Tinwald, was killed when the car he was a passenger in crashed into a tree on a straight piece of road on the Methven Highway (State Highway 77) in the early hours of September 2 last month.

Police confirmed yesterday, through a statement from their Police Media Team that certain details of the accident were

still being investigated and they were awaiting various findings before taking the next step in the process.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to Ashburton Hospital following the accident after walking to a nearby house to raise the alarm.

Detective Anthony Clare said that reports, which they were waiting on, would lead to a decision on what would happen next in the investigation.

“We are currently awaiting specialist reports before a decision can be made as

to what the appropriate action is to take as a result of the investigation,” Clare said. “At this stage no charges have been laid and enquiries into the fatal crash are still ongoing.”

Due to the nature and stage of the investigation, police could not confirm if alcohol or speed were factors in the accident.

A decision, but no announcement?

As NZ First leader, Winston Peters and his MPs met in Parliament yesterday, there was a sense a decision would finally be reached yesterday – but it was never going to necessarily lead to an announcement.

Sign-off procedures needed by other parties were expected to delay the process further although strong rumours around the Beehive during most of yesterday were that New Zealand may finally get its answer today.

Peters entered Bowen House, yesterday by taxi and did not speak to media.

The meeting between the leader and his MPs followed secret oneon-one meetings with National leader Bill English and Labour leader Jacinda Ardern on Tuesday night, for which Peters drove 100m to an underground Beehive car park to avoid being seen.

Peters talked to English and Ardern about his party’s preferred government arrangement, which NZME understands favours ministerial posts rather than sitting on the cross benches.

Both leaders respectively were on their own with Peters without staff or any of their negotiating teams – the first one-on-one meetings between them.

Tuesday night’s meetings came soon after a two-day meeting of the NZ First board and caucus.

Afterwards, Peters told media the board was “98 per cent there”

Our Place survey generates huge interest

With its first phase just wrapping up, the Ashburton District Council is counting its Our Place community survey as an absolute winner.

The online survey was launched last month and respondents were asked to list the things they wanted to see built, developed or undertaken in the district. The ideas came pouring in, with more than 600 respons-

es, many with multiple ideas, received and more flooding in and yet to be collated.

It’s the best response the council has had to a community consultation exercise, said community relations manager Vincie Billante and indicates there will be strong interest in this year’s long term plan discussions.

The first round of consultation wrapped up last night and late next week phase two begins.

This will see all the ideas that were generated in the first round collated and put back up for comment, Billante said.

“We’ll be saying, this is what people have said, what do you think.”

People could join the discussion at any stage, she said, and did not need to have been contributors to take part in phase two.

“The second phase will be asking people to state their

priorities but if we’ve missed something or you didn’t take part the first time round, you can still add ideas into the mix.”

When the second phase of consultation wraps up, the ideas and comments will be assessed and tagged with likely implementation costs.

These will then become part of the discussions when councillors start building their long term spending plan for rates over the next 10 years.

He said he would try and resolve the talks as fast as possible.

It was still his goal to reach a decision by the end of the week, but that would partly depend on the other parties as well.

Peters said there was “serious consensus” over the policies put to both sides.

“This is a case of policies that survived and those are the ones that will be going into an agreement.”

He said once those final details were hammered out, a further board meeting could be held by teleconference rather than in person.

Crash probe continues From P1 The Police Media team did advise that they hoped to be able to make a further announcement in regards to the investigation in the coming weeks.

Muir was an apprentice gardener for the Ashburton District Council and was described by a close friend to the Guardian as “one of life’s good people”.

He was farewelled in Peel Forest six days after the accident.

It is yet to be confirmed whether Muir and the driver were the only occupants of the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The season of swooping magpies is here again

“Swooping season” is under way for the year as territorial magpies seek to defend their young.

The black and white birds are in the midst of their annual seven-week nesting season, during which they demonstrate very protective behaviours.

The Mid Canterbury Mountain Bike Club are among those suffering from the dive-bombing birds, and president James Reid said the birds had given a few mountain bikers “a bit of a fright”.

“We’ve had heaps of birds dive-bombing people on their bikes, mostly on the stopbank near Melrose Road.”

He said some cyclists tried to out-run the birds, and others avoided the troublespots altogether.

Ashburton District Council had received

a number of enquiries in the past concerning the birds – including from mobility scooter riders, farmers and runners.

Environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle said that this year they would advise people to look at the information and advice on their website, listed under Pest Control.

For a specific concern, he would advise people to get in contact with a registered pest contractor, he said.

New Zealand Birds recommends that the best course of action to take in the instance of a magpie attack is to stay calm, make eye contact with the bird and walk quickly and carefully away from the area (and if cycling, dismounting and wheeling the bike).

They also advised that magpie swoops are usually a warning, and only “occasionally” will a bird actually strike with its beak or claws.

Water charges ‘not on my watch’

Water metering for all urban properties might be On Water New Zealand’s radar, but it won’t be happening in Ashburton on his watch says Ashburton District Council service delivery chairman Stuart Wilson.

A growing number of local authorities around New Zealand now use volumetric charging for water but it has always been a nogo area for Ashburton.

And while it is now on the Christchurch City Council’s agenda, the current rating system for water supplies is one big tick in the Ashburton District’s favour, Wilson said.

Water meters are installed on commercial properties and in some zones, such as Residential D, that sees a charge kick in once

Councillor Stuart Wilson a certain consumption level is breached, he said.

“But when it comes to charging for water, my opinion is no, definitely no.

“One of the advantages of living in Ashburton is that there is heaps

of water underground for domestic use.”

The council is consented to take up to 25,000 cumecs per day for its town supply.

If daily consumption tips over two thirds of that level, hosing restrictions are imposed to ensure that limit is not breached.

Water meters, however, are a useful tool in determining if water is being wasted, Wilson said.

They were installed on every property in Mayfield to monitor the network and identify leaks or excessive use on individual properties. They were not used as a charging tool.

And that was an excellent exercise that could be applied in other towns, said council assets manager Andrew Guthrie.

“It’s a controversial topic but as an asset manager, tying a water

supply to water meters is a useful tool because now, once the water’s left our bulk meter, we have no idea where it’s going in real terms.

“With meters we could work out where our losses were occurring, on the public network or on private properties,” he said.

For Guthrie, water meters are a management tool and as the Mayfield exercise demonstrated, water consumption could be dramatically reduced once leaks and excessive consumption were identified.

The meters were used as a management tool only.

“It gives us a lot of benefits. The consumption in Mayfield halved by introducing water meters.”

It was quite clear that the water industry was pushing towards having all urban supplies metered, believing that a charging regime

would ensure more responsible use, Guthrie said.

“People use user-pay for electricity and all manner of things so it’s relatable to these. If you get a high power bill then you check what’s using that power but in terms of water, you have no idea.”

The council does not have a policy around the introduction of user-pays through water meters for its urban supplies, but Guthrie said he could see real advantages in having these installed on the council’s network to identify where leaks were occurring as opposed to charging for water use.

“I know councillors are pretty cautious about water meters, but Water New Zealand has the view that water meters must come.

“There are a few councils around the country doing it now and more looking this way,” he said.

Wanted: community honours nominees

If you know someone who has made a difference to the district through their voluntary work, then the Ashburton District Council wants to hear from you.

Nominations are open for the district’s new-look community honours awards and this year for the first time those awards will cover four categories.

In June last year the new community honours awards policy was signed off by the council and come with a Mayor’s Award and an Ashburton Medal added to the mix.

Nominations can be made by organisations, associations, clubs or by two people from any of these groups.

Nominees do not have to know they have been put forward for the awards, but if selected, their agreement will need to be obtained before an award is made.

The awards are a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the people who help make the district a great place to live, says mayor Donna Favel.

“Every year, countless people in our community selflessly give their time to benefit others. It’s important to recognise these people and show them how much we, as a community, appreciate their hard work and generosity. Help us say ‘thank you’ by nominating a deserving volunteer that you know,” she said.

The four categories open for nominees are the Mayor’s Award for public service, Ashburton Medal, Civic Awards and Honorary Citizens.

Mayor’s Award for public service: This is the highest civic honour bestowed by the council. It is rare and is given to people who have made a significant and sustained contribution to the district. It recognises the recipients as stewards of the district and as people of special note. The honour is bestowed on an individual for their lifetime.

There is no limit to the number of people who may be recognised as worthy of the Mayor’s Award.

Ashburton Medal: This honours the significant achievement of individuals or teams who have been very successful in their chosen field and who have made an outstanding contribution to the district as a whole or outstanding national or international achievements. Only one medal may be awarded each year.

Civic Awards: These are awarded in recognition of substantial service, usually voluntary or beyond normal employment and benefiting the district and its people. No more than five of these are made in any year.

Honorary citizens: This is an extraordinary honour granted to individuals who have given great service to Ashburton.

It may be granted to an individual, organisation or position and awards may be made at any time.

The original awards were established in 1997.

Key likely to take top ANZ job

By Paul mcBeth Former Prime Minister John Key will take over as chair of the country’s biggest bank, ANZ Bank New Zealand, next year in his second high-profile directorship.

Key will join the ANZ New Zealand board in October and replace John Judge as chair in the new year, the bank said in a statement. Judge will retire from the board in January, ending almost a decade as a director and five-and-a-half years as chair.

“Sir John Key’s strong inter-

national career in banking and his understanding of and contacts across the Asia-Pacific – where many Australian and New Zealand companies are increasingly trading – will add great value to the governance of ANZ,” Australia & New Zealand Banking Group chair David Gonski said.

“John Judge’s tenure has overseen significant change in the ANZ New Zealand business.”

Key’s appointment to the ANZ New Zealand board is his second high-profile position since he unexpectedly resigned as prime minister late last year

while still highly popular in polls. In May he was earmarked to join Air New Zealand’s board in August.

Before entering politics, Key worked in banking and finance where he was head of global foreign exchange at Merrill Lynch.

ANZ New Zealand’s board is rounded out with independents Tony Carter, Mark Verbiest and Joan Withers, and executive directors including local CEO David Hisco, ANZ group chief risk officer Nigel Williams and group CEO Shayne Elliott.

Resource recovery park ups the ante

As the new kerbside collection for rubbish and recyclables beds-in across the Ashburton District, a raft of new equipment is arriving at the Resource Recovery Park.

Waste recovery manager Craig Goodwin said a new bucket loader is now working on site and will shortly be joined by a top-of-theline shredder.

When the collection contract was written, new machinery was part of the deal, Goodwin said.

“We’ve done it on a shoestring before, but now we’re catching up and becoming modernised. One of the requirements of the new contract was that all equipment had to be new, we didn’t want hand-me-downs from city contracts.”

Often a park operator will want to move equipment from a city to a smaller area, but with a seven year contract and machinery that was used every day, having anything less than new equipment was not an option, he said.

The latest arrival, the bucket loader, works at the tip face and in the green waste area.

While it is much more efficient than its predecessor it also creates a much safer working environment, he said.

The new shredder for green waste would make it a much more efficient exercise moving material from Methven and Rakaia. Currently this is moved in bulk, requiring several road trips; the new shredder will be used onsite, therefore reducing the volume of material needing to be moved. Goodwin said.

Afghanistan hit by attacks The Taliban unleashed a wave of attacks across Afghanistan, targeting police compounds and government facilities with suicide bombers in the country’s south, east and west, and killing at least 74 people, officials said.

Among those killed in one of the attacks was a provincial police chief. Scores were also wounded, both policemen and civilians.

Afghanistan’s deputy interior minister, Murad Ali Murad, called the onslaught the “biggest terrorist attack this year”.

In southern Paktia province, 41 people were killed when the Taliban targeted a police compound in the provincial capital of Gardez with two suicide car bombs.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement that after the two cars blew up in Gardez, five attackers with suicide belts tried to storm the compound but were killed by Afghan security forces.

In southern Ghazni province, the insurgents stormed a security compound in Andar district, using a suicide car bomb and killing 25 police and

five civilians, Murad said. At least 15 people were wounded, he added.

Arif Noori, spokesman for the provincial governor in Ghazni, said the Taliban attack there lasted nine hours.

By the time the attackers were repelled, there were 13 bodies of Taliban fighters on the

ground, Noori added.

And in western Farah province, police chief Abdul Maruf Fulad says the Taliban attacked a government compound in Shibkho district, killing three policemen.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for all three attacks.

Despite the staggering numbers, Murad said Afghan forces are confident in their “readiness to fight terrorists and eliminate them from Afghanistan”.

An Afghan official said drone strikes killed 35 Taliban fighters in the country’s east, near the border with Pakistan.

Abdullah Asrat, spokesman for the governor of Paktia province, said drones fired missiles at four locations in Anzarki Kandaw, killing the insurgents and wounding 15 others. He said a commander of the Pakistani Taliban, Abu Bakr, and other senior insurgents were among the dead. He did not provide further details.

Ringwald speaking up In a piece for The New Yorker, Ringwald shares her own experience, and while she says she was never sexually harassed by the producer, she claims she was by “other Harveys”. Ringwald writes that she was warned about Weinstein before working with him on the movie Strike It Rich when she was 20 years old; the actress ended up suing the producer and his brother for lost wages and “never worked with Harvey or the company again”. “While my own Harvey story may be different, I have had plenty of Harveys of my own over the years, enough to feel a sickening shock of recognition,” she said, before describing several instances.

US author wins Booker UK terrorist threat worst seen – Spy boss Britain’s domestic intelligence chief says the country is facing the worst terrorist threat he’s seen his 34-year career.

MI5 Director General Andrew Parker said in a rare public speech on Tuesday that the threat is “multi-dimensional, evolving rapidly and operating at a scale and pace we’ve not seen before”.

“The threat is more diverse than I have ever known: plots developed here in the UK, but plots directed from overseas as well, plots online, complex scheming and also crude stabbings, lengthy planning but also spontaneous attacks,” said Parker.

“Attacks can sometimes accelerate from inception,

through planning, to action in just a handful of days,” he said in central London.

Parker said there has been a “dramatic upshift” this year, which has produced attacks in London and the city of Manchester that have killed 36 people combined.

Another 20 attacks were foiled in Britain over the past four years and “many more” were prevented.

He cited a record number of terrorism-related arrests, including 379 during the first six months of 2017.

Parker says it’s impossible for MI5 to stop every attack, but the service is identifying and disrupting threats all the time.

American author George Saunders has been handed this year’s Man Booker Prize for his first full-length novel.

Lincoln In The Bardo, which focuses on the night Abraham Lincoln laid his 11-yearold son to rest in 1862, was hailed as “utterly original” and praised by judges for its “witty, intelligent, and deeply moving narrative”.

The 58-year-old writer, who had been favourite to win, was presented with the prestigious literary award and STG50,000 prize during a ceremony in central London, attended by the Duchess of Cornwall.

Saunders becomes the second American author to take home the Man Booker Prize in its 49-year history.

The judging panel deliberated for five hours before unanimously naming

Saunders as the winner.

Lincoln In The Bardo is the first full-length novel from acclaimed short story writer Saunders.

Saunders told Time magazine that he had not set out to write about the US statesman but was “captivated” after hearing about Lincoln’s visit.

“I thought of the book as a way of trying to instil the same reaction I’d had all those years ago,” he said.

First awarded in 1969, the Man Booker Prize is recognised as one of the most prestigious in the literary world, with previous winners including Salman Rushdie and Ian McEwan.

It is the fourth year the awards have been open to any writer regardless of nationality, provided the book was written originally in English and was published in the UK. – PA

Sheeran cancels shows Ed Sheeran has cancelled some of his upcoming shows in Asia after a doctor confirmed he has fractured both arms.

The hitmaker has announced he will be unable to perform in Taipei, Osaka, Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong after he fractured his right wrist and left elbow in a bike accident in London. He shared on his Facebook page: “A visit to my doctors confirmed fractures in my right wrist and left elbow that will leave me unable to perform live concerts for the immediate future. Please stay tuned for more details”. He shared: “I’ve had a bit of a bicycle accident and I’m currently waiting on some medical advice, which may affect some of my upcoming shows.”

i-SITE support too little too late Sue Newman

hen things happen in our district, it sometimes takes us a while

to react.

The news that Ashburton’s i-SITE was up for closure is now several weeks old. If was hinted last year, hit the headlines in August, rolled on through September and was signed and sealed this month.

And suddenly, when the deal is done, when the time for talking, making the case, rallying support is long gone, we’re up in arms. We want it to stay.

If the outpouring of anger, disappointment and letters to the editor had come much earlier in the piece, then Experience Mid Canterbury might have given the closure a second look.

Reaction when it was suggested Methven’s site might also close, was swift. A petition was quickly doing the rounds and people were talking. And they weren’t happy. Methven won its case and while there might be the odd change to hours or the way it operates, it’s pretty much a case of business as usual.

But in Ashburton nothing much happened.

Yes, a petition was finally launched, but by the time it was presented to the Ashburton District Council the closure deed was virtually done. And since then there have been mutterings of anger across town; people say we’ve lost a facility many saw had big value for locals and tourists alike.

You have to ask what’s wrong in Ashvegas? Too late to show you care after the closure is done and dusted. It would take a mighty big reversal of thinking to undo what’s done.

The Ashburton District Council is copping a fair bit of flak over the closure, but ultimately the decision (publicly at least) was made by Experience Mid Canterbury. Its board decided the money spent keeping the non-profit making i-SITE open could be better spent elsewhere promoting the district.

Who knows, they could be right, but inevitably there’s a price that will be paid on the ground with meeting the needs of the travellers we already have. A little bit of information provided, a smile, a welcome and many of those may have stayed a night, eaten a meal and bought goods within the district rather than driving on through.

And maybe all that’s happened because the community was too slow to react.

Never too early to get it up!

former work colleague and I used to have a bit of a contest each year to see who could get their Christmas tree up first.

Morry Shannahan did an Auckland breakfast show with me back in the early 90s and we both used to enthuse over the festive season and the joyous vibe the experience brought.

It was somewhere around that time that I considered Labour weekend the threshold of decency to launch into decoration mode. And although I’ve dithered on and off over the intervening 25 years, since we launched our function venue four years ago, Labour weekend is indeed when we swing into full yuletide action.

Actually it would be more than a month ago, early September when I noticed to my left as I walked into a local hardware store, a huge stack of cartons freshly arrived. Probably hundreds of them. On closer inspection it was the season’s Christmas stock with all manner of trees and festive lighting. YES, I thought, it’s under way!

But for every seasonal reveller, there’s a Santa Grinch. I’ve always been perplexed by people who throw their hands up in horror when the festive stuff comes out early.

They react like World War Three has arrived. Or they’ve just had a terminal diagnosis. Hey,

it’s a celebration of positivity and festivity. What’s not to like?

For some reason many consider it obscene that the festive bunting should appear any time other than December and here’s where I mount the case for the defence.

Firstly, you don’t have to look very hard to see plenty to concern you in the world these days.

For example, Donald and Kim’s constant taunting of each other with us as the pawns in a game of brinkmanship and unimaginable consequences for starters.

Why then, not get the absolute maximum potential out of a process that brings so much joy?

Additonally your Honour, if I’m going to spend hours on my knees in the attic retrieving boxes of tangled lights and decorations, and even more hours sorting and hanging them and trying to get the lights to work then I want to get the maximum possible benefit.

I’m sorry, if they go up early December, three-and-a-half weeks’ seasonal foreplay just doesn’t cut the mustard. Hardly

worth the expended effort.

C’mon.

Let’s just play around with Christmas for, I dunno, at least six weeks – possibly more if you have the seasonal stamina – so that the whole thing culminates in a joyous climax on December 25!

This “Peter Mac Christmas Decoration Early Erection Theory” applies equally to those Christmas-en-light-ened individuals who most unselfishly festoon their spouting, their rooflines, their letterboxes, their drainpipes, TV aerials and anything else they can tape a string of lights to on their abodes.

It looks awesome, but when a group of the neighbours either side decide to get in on the act and do the same, the result is the closest many of us will get to Disneyland.

The old council copped a bit of flak with their late arrival to the Christmas Party last season and this year plans are in place to bring the effort forward and with some new kit too. Late November.

Sorry – I think that’s still too late in the piece. What harm would there be in having things in place and functioning by the second or third week in November? Let’s get our money’s worth and spread some happiness for longer.

I want to pin a medal on whoever had the idea and actioned

it to light our beloved clock tower and that lovely big wash of colour at night in the domain.

Drive up Aitken Street toward East Street at night and you’ll see what I mean.

Now imagine if we could persuade all the business and building owners on East Street to install colour wash cheap-aschips-to-run lighting to illuminate above their verandahs and up their facades and have it all synchronised. Imagine just how cool that would look – even all year round. Just ask Roger Farr at the Event Centre and he’ll tell you how it’s done.

A concerted effort by retailers could give Ashburton a real point of difference and display to the rest of the country we do things in a special way. It’s not difficult to achieve and it’s not rocket science.

So this long Labour weekend at our place, out will come the Santa sleigh, the reindeer, the lights, the bunting, and up will go our venue trees.

Yes, one tree is just not enough for us.

You can’t have too much joy.

Not only am I disgusted by this unbelievable decision, I am ashamed for our wonderful community.

Whenever travelling outside our area or overseas, more often than not, our first place of call has been to the local i-SITE to make sure we make the most of our stay and to gather material for our trip.

I do hope the council sees the error of this most amazing decision about what I regard is such a wonderful asset to our community.

Visitors and locals like to “talk” to someone – not everyone in this “modern technical age” relies on the use of “apps” for information.

A local friendly person can provide a wealth of information to visitors, far more than what can be gained by just randomly picking up a pamphlet somewhere, or looking at an app.

Most people that travel around the country and/or overseas, will say that one of the first things they do when they arrive in a town, is visit the local information centre.

An information centre, probably never did, or never will, make a “profit” dollar-wise, but surely the benefit of providing visitors to our district with personal service and information is a “profit” worth far more to our community than the dollar on the balance sheet.

I think this should be a service provided by the local council to enhance and promote our district and I hope the council will reconsider its decision to the close the i-SITE. J. Stewart

YOUR VIEW i-SITE closure Was interesting reading the opinion in the Guardian this morning regarding the information centre presented by Tony Todd.

I too think it is a shame the information centre has closed.

I spoke to a young fellow with a pack on his back on East Street a couple of days ago who was walking aimlessly up and down on East Street block looking for some place that could point him in the right direction.

Although I was able to help him (I hope) on his way, there must be many other visitors in the same situation.

I have always wondered about the possibility that the information centre and the AA (Automobile Association) could have combined in the one building, since they were providing some duplicate services and maybe, and I’m only guessing, the operating costs of the information centre could have been reduced.

I-SITE, the name says it all. It’s an information centre not a dairy or cafe.

You never make money at an information centre because they distribute information about all sorts of places and events where these visitors, be it local or international, go on to spend their money within our district.

Whoever instigated this motion to close such a facility should be sacked. Ashburton’s i-SITE has always offered great advice and had wonderful staff.

I know the internet is great for information, but it doesn’t give you that local insider information with the wonderful personal touch.

Council members, wake up and think again. As a visitor to a new area, have you not considered visiting its local i-SITE to get good advice on that area? Somehow I don’t think money was the issue, or at least it shouldn’t be.

Highsted said TeenAg numbers increased by 27 per cent last year alone, with AgriKidsNZ by 6 per cent.

“It’s encouraging to see that the work NZ Young Farmers puts in to exciting the younger generation about agriculture is being rewarded and we hope it will eventually reward the entire New Zealand primary industry.”

Designed as a fun competitive way to introduce urban and rural schools and families to agriculture, the contests have become the highlight of many students’ year.

“These students are becoming champions of our industry and are

New Zealand’s most hotly contested competitions for rural youth have expanded due to phenomenal growth and are open for entries.

The AgriKidsNZ and TeenAg competitions held around New Zealand to coincide with the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Regional Finals will get under way in February, but due to popularity, organisers are warning teams to get their entries in now.

NZ Young Farmers competitions co-ordinator David Highsted said since AgriKidsNZ began in 2005 and TeenAg began in 2009 the competition has gone from strength to strength.

“In the last contest season that culminated in record entries and

sharing the fantastic experiences they have through the contest. It is a great public relations exercise and a vital part of NZ Young Farmers ongoing emphasis of educating our youth about the vast and exciting opportunities within the primary sector.”

Mid Canterbury featured strongly in the 2017 national results.

The AgriKids competition was won by a Geraldine High School team that was made up of local students Jessica Furrer, Angus Wallace and William Wilson, while second place in the TeenAg competition went to a Timaru Boys’ High School team that contained Ashburton’s Jack Millar.

New challenge for former MP Upton Y

ou might have missed it with the focus on other parliamentary goings on recently, but this week marked the start of another new era in Wellington – former National Cabinet Minister Simon Upton began his new role as Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment on Monday.

It’s fair to say there’s been a lot of water pass under the proverbial bridge for Upton since the former Rhodes scholar and Young Nats chairman was elected as MP for Waikato in 1990 at the tender age of 23, but he would probably be the first to say that’s been for the best.

Although at the time he was one of the country’s youngest MPs, and later picked up the portfolios of the environment, health and research science and technol-

ogy, for someone so obviously intelligent and capable, he won’t be remembered as one of parliament’s great success stories.

Indeed, there are some who are very unimpressed that he has been given his new role, including the NZ First leadership team of Winston Peters and Ron Mark, who variously described his appointment earlier this year as a classic case of jobs for the boys (Peters) and something, Mark said, “that we will no way accept

when standing in government”.

We’ll wait and see where that goes. I suspect nowhere, given the appointment was ratified by parliament.

Interestingly enough both Labour and the Greens have backed Upton as the right man for the job, long-serving Labour MP Trevor Mallard describing him as the “clear-cut choice”, and the Greens’ David Clendon saying “the work he’s done suits the task”.

Which, when you look at it, is fairly hard to argue against if you’re coming at it from an environmental watchdog point of view, which is exactly what the role is designed to be.

Just look at what Upton’s done since leaving parliament.

He chaired the OECD’s Round Table on Sustainable Development for four years and then,

after a break when he came back to New Zealand to pursue private interests, he returned to France to take up a job as head of the OECD’s environment directorate, a post he held for seven years until taking up his current role.

So, what can farmers expect?

Well, at this point, that’s hard to say, as despite the word “parliamentary” appearing in his job title, he will, like his predecessor Jan Wright, set his own agenda.

Although during his history as an MP Upton nailed his colours to the mast of shrinking the state’s role in the lives of everyday New Zealanders, a recent OECD report with his fingerprints all over it was pretty damning about current government policy, describing the economic model it’s following as having reached its use-by date, one that has become a threat to

the country’s clean, green image.

Which might sound alarm bells for some.

Will he help set a direction to find a blue-green answer? Or will he make farmers see red, both politically and financially?

Time will tell, but what can be certain is that he is taking on the role at a critical juncture, when the country is struggling to come to grips with how to protect the environment, while at the same time not restricting the ability of farmers to go about their business.

It’s sure to be a challenge, but going on the reputation he made for himself at the OECD, not one Upton is likely to shirk.

Five top tips for negotiating a pay rise

It’s probably been a while since you asked, given the average pay rates rose 1.6 per cent in the year to March 31.

That’s less than the annual increase in consumer price inflation right now – so yes if it feels like you’re going backwards, it’s quite possible you are.

Dan Hughes, a master negotiator who appeared on Britain’s Channel 4 this week, said most people don’t ask for fear of damaging their relationship with their boss.

However, the reality is it’s extremely difficult to fire people – unless you do something like literally setting your workplace on fire.

“Don’t worry, the worst that can happen is you’re no worse off,” he said.

He said there are five things you can do to improve your pay.

Step one Figure out what you’re worth and what value you add to the business, and write down what you’re earning now and how much

Always try getting something else before lowering your demand.

Step four Don’t worry about feeling uncomfortable.

Your boss is probably a bit nervous as well and even if they can’t give you a pay rise, they don’t want to demotivate you or lose you.

Step five

Auckland Zoo is auctioning off a former zookeeper’s house – with a thrifty $1 reserve.

The home was being sold with the condition that it would need to be uplifted and moved at the buyer’s own cost by November 20.

On the listing on Trademe the zoo said it would donate $5000 as well as all profits from the sale to the Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund, which works to protect vulnerable species like the kiwi.

This was on the condition the $1 reserve was met.

The listing describes the house as a “charming Lockwood home that was once a zookeeper residence”.

ANZ downgrades forecast

By Jonathan Underhill The New Zealand dollar fell after prices dropped in the latest dairy auction, prompting ANZ Bank New Zealand to downgrade its milk payout forecast, while gains in the kiwi after stronger inflation data proved to be short-lived.

The local currency traded at 71.66 US cents as at 8am in Wellington, having fallen as low as 71.45 cents after the dairy auction, from 71.64 cents late Tuesday. The trade-weighted index rose to 75.52 from 75.39 Tuesday.

ANZ Bank lowered its milk price forecast to a range of $6.25$6.50 per kilogram of milksolids compared to Fonterra’s projected $6.75/kgMS after the GDT price index fell 1 per cent in the

GlobalDairyTrade auction overnight, while whole milk powder declined 0.5 per cent to $US3014 a tonne. Prices fell after an unexpected decline in the previous sale two weeks ago. The kiwi has traded in a narrow range as the outcome of talks to form the next government drag on.

Meanwhile, the greenback gained after US September industrial production rose 0.3 per cent as expected and after reports that President Donald Trump favours Stanford University economist John Taylor, thought to be a policy hawk who would hike interest rates faster, as the next Federal Reserve chair.

“We continue to hold the view that until there is a greater degree of political clarity, moves higher

are going to be difficult,” said Con Williams, rural economist at ANZ Bank. “Additionally, the softer GDT auction overnight and our milk price downgrade reinforces that some of kiwi’s previous supports are fading.”

The kiwi rose to 54.35 British pence from 54.04 pence Tuesday after Bank of England governor Mark Carney said he expects interest rates to rise in coming months while new monetary policy committee member David Ramsden said he wasn’t inclined to hike.

The kiwi rose to 91.33 Australian cents from 91.26 cents on Tuesday. It traded at 4.7447 yuan from 4.7290 yuan and rose to 80.42 yen from 80.27 yen. It traded at 60.88 euro cents from 60.81 cents.

Out of the blue It’s deep, moody and soothing, and can be found in boho, seaside and contemporary design. Indigo is racing up the style charts, but upon examination, it’s a colour which has never been out of style.

The deep blue was once sourced from the indigo plant in India. The dye was imported into Europe as early as the Greco-Roman era and was extremely expensive. The dye held its colour well, so it was worn by the wealthy.

It evokes a seriousness, from military references and tradition, and represents strength. While it is a masculine colour, when paired with white it quickly represents innocence. Four main types of property ownership Most real estate advertisements are pretty straightforward. There’s an attractive photo, a headline that screams the property’s best features and a list of its vital statistics.

Dig a bit further though and things can get confusing. Everyone can decipher the bit that tells you the property is ‘A first home buyer’s dream’, and tick off the number of bedrooms, bathrooms and offstreet parking spaces. But what if the fine print tells you it’s freehold, or leasehold, or – even more confusing, cross-lease?

You might not realise it from a brief glance, but how a property is owned has a direct impact on your rights. While some methods of ownership are straightforward, others are slightly more complicated and it’s worth doing your homework to understand their impact.

There are four main types of land ownership in New Zealand: freehold, leasehold, unit title and cross-lease.

Freehold Freehold, also known as ‘fee simple’, is the most common kind of ownership and the simplest to understand. If you have a freehold property, you have total ownership of the land and anything built on it. That means, generally speaking, that you can live on the property, earn income from renting it out, build on the land, lease it to someone else, use it as security when

applying for a loan, gift it by will or sell the land.

Leasehold With leasehold ownership, someone else owns the land (with freehold ownership) and the leaseholder has the exclusive right to possession of the land and any buildings on it. If you buy a house or apartment that is built on leasehold land, you have to pay the freehold owner a ‘ground rental’, which is usually paid twice yearly in advance. You are also responsible for rates and other expenses relating to your property. Leasehold ownership is usually subject to terms and conditions that restrict what the leaseholder can do with the buildings or land. The lease will also set out conditions for when the ground rent can be reviewed (usually every seven years). The length of a lease term varies – at the end of the term it can be renewed or revert back to the freehold owner.

If you are interested in buying a leasehold property, it’s a good idea to find out exactly what these terms and conditions are, especially because an increasing ground rent rate (and a shortening lease term) can have a serious impact on your ability to sell the property at a later date.

Each cross lease holder is granted what is known as a registered leasehold estate of the particular area and building that they occupy. These leases are usually for 999 years and each one will set out exclusive areas of occupation as well as any shared or common areas. In other words, your house or unit is set apart just for you and your family, but you have equal access to shared areas (like a driveway, or garages, or a common garden area). A cross-lease title also includes a plan of the footprint of the property, so you can see if it matches the property you are looking at.

erty has, it’s absolutely crucial to do your homework before you sign on the dotted line to buy one. A title search will help you find out all the facts about the property’s ownership, boundary and access, as held

by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).

Remember to look out for easements or covenants that may differ from your understanding of the property, such as rules about who can live in it, car parking and access. A Land Information Memorandum (LIM) will also show you information held by the local council about the property and land.

It’s a really good idea to get a lawyer who can help you navigate all these different documents and understand what they mean. Check out www.propertylawyers.org.nz to find one in your area – and start talking to them before you begin the house hunting process. When you have found a property that you’re keen on, the REAA recommends getting an independent assessment of the property done by an inspector who has professional indemnity insurance and carries out their work in accordance with the New Zealand Property Inspection Standard. All these steps will help minimise the risk of making a bad decision.

Bella the social butterfly On this Southbridge dairy farm, nothing gets done without Bella the goat.

She’s a real pet (or did I mean pest?), even though she’s not supposed to be.

■ Preheat the oven to 220°C. ■ Beef: Lightly oil a deep baking dish or skillet (one that will fit 8 meatballs comfortably in a single layer). Mix all meatball ingredients together well, then shape into 8 meatballs and place in prepared baking dish.

■ Tomato sauce: Place a dash of

oil in a heavy-based saucepan, over a low heat, and add the onion and garlic. Cook until the onion is soft, about 10 minutes.

■ Add tomatoes, stock, tomato paste, sugar, bay leaf and season well. Simmer for 10 minutes to allow all the flavours to mingle and the liquid to reduce a little. Remove from the heat, cool for about 5 minutes, remove the bay leaf, then process in a food processor until you have a smooth sauce.

■ Beef: Pour sauce over the meatballs and cook in oven for 25 minutes turning meatballs once after 15 minutes.

■ To serve: Serve hot sprinkled with the parmesan cheese and chopped parsley.

Allenton Bowling Club On Saturday October 14 the men began their Open Championship 4’s and 2 rounds were played – the format being round robin.

Also last Saturday Progressive Pairs were played for the 1st round of the Thomas Trophy.

Allenton Croquet Club Club president Ann Sunbeam welcomed club members.

The new season is going well but has again been effected by the weather. Resignations were received from 2 older members. Welcome to 5 new golf croquet players.

Thanks were expressed to Marion Cleland for hosting Mah Jong during the winter. Members were thanked for helping with Meals on Wheels.

Club Captain reported 3 members went to the Gala Day in Timaru. The interprovincial has been played with Canterbury the winners. Club competitions will be organised shortly. Members were reminded that names must be in the draw by 1.15pm ready to play at 1.30pm.

Our mini speaker was Graeme Pierson, chairman FNZI and is the past chairman of the South Island Association of Friendship Clubs. He told us about his work in the police both in South Island sole charge rural and city stations. He then outlined the history of the former Probus organisation which led to where we are now with two competing organisations, Friendship NZ and Rebus NZ. It seems that after going through a difficult and busy time during the separation from the Australian Probus organisation and the subsequent split, the Council of FNZI (who are all volunteers), now has Friendship NZ Inc. on a steady path and the organisation is ticking over nicely.

Our main speaker was well known local businessman Russell Antiss who told us that while still at school he formed the ambition to buy a local bookshop and stationery business. He told the owners that he wanted to buy the business when he was older.

Ashburton Bridge Club Last Thursday the Bridge Club held their Annual Charity Night.

Sixty-eight players participated and were pleased to support the Mid Canterbury Hospice as the recipient charity for 2017.

It is usual to expect 26 points between 2 bridge hands to produce a game result of 3 N.T. or 4 of a major suit – i.e. 9 & 10 tricks respectively. However, this deal demonstrates the impact distribution and placement of key cards can have on the end result.

Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club October club night Good crowd to listen to Don playing over in the corner there.

His choice of music was spot on. Our evenings are always worth coming out for.

Janet welcomed two new visitors who hopefully will join us, and we sincerely hoped they enjoyed our evening.

There was discussion about leaving our winter starting hours as a permanent option (7pm play in, 7.30 start) allowing time for our usual supper getto-gather and an earlier time arriving home. It was decided to begin the New Year with it.

Reminder of afternoon at Alan and Jeanette Andrews, and Bands in the park concert in November, and the practice at Micheals Tuesday October 24.

Bev Stevens hosted the entertainment for the evening, with her usual smattering of jokes, (we really do need her to use the mike as they were very funny) First up, Irene and Cushla on accordions the songs they chose I thought were soooo suited to the accordion. “Gersauer Landler” a gentle piece with super harmony, as was the snow waltz, and the ever haunting “Hebrew slave chorus” Marg Twamley played Alice blue gown, “Immoratta” and “Sunset over the St Lawrence” ending with such a fanfare that I felt she’d been dying to put it in one of her many pieces for ages.

The accordion group then played their usual toe tapping tunes. I could hear the lovely harmony coming through in “Lace covered window” it sounded lovely Irene. Fair go, they are such a class act as toe tappers go. They should be playing at Bands in the park. (lol) Welcome to a new accordion player, (and many other instruments I believe) Robin, and hope you will stay.

Elizabeth then played a really lovely selection, so nice in fact I wish she would play her pieces a tad louder so those in the back could hear what I heard. ”Danny boy” always gets to you, as does “Bridge over troubled waters” A1.

Irene then played a nice selection with Karen Ballderston accompanying her on piano. Another new member we hope. They played a Scottish medley, and then an old time medley. Well done.

Michael concluded the evening with some lovely songs on the Kawai organ. I haven’t heard “heart” for years. “Melody in F”etc etc….

There were some really nice pieces aired tonight.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club We had six players take part in the Spring Drawn Triples at Ascot on September 23. Mick Little (Ashburton) Janet Wilkinson (Papanui) and Pauline Morgan (Ascot) were the championship winners of the day.

We had four players who were part of the 38 who played in the National Singles in Dunedin on the 7/8th October. All performed very well among New Zealand’s top players and Richard Browne won the Championship consolation.

Ashburton had a team of six take part in the Piste of Origin event at Ascot on October 14. They came 3rd with 16 points, just one point behind the second place-getter.

Saturday 14 we started playing socially starting at 1.30 and we plan to continue this. This give weekday working people the chance to come along and join in.

We are still getting good numbers at our social days on a Tuesday and Thursday. It was great over the holidays to someone bring their grandchildren along, and another person bring along family members. All who joined in and showed they had talent for the game.

Next month on November 24/25th we are hosting the TreStar tournament which is a competition between teams from the Wellington, Southern, and Canterbury regions.

We will also be hosting the South Island Senior Doubles on November 18/19, and already we have entries coming in for this event

Ashburton Photographic Society This month we have two competitions within a short time, this allows us to have them judged and returned back ready for the end of year judging.

So that means the end of year is fast approaching for the club.

Ashburton Writers’ Group President Julie welcomed members to the October meeting of the Ashburton Writers’ Group held recently.

John read a quotation – “Bad Decisions Make Good Stories”.

The Assignment for the meeting was “I’ll never part with it.” Members wrote of friends, Award Show, eyes and music.

The instant exercise was to start with “there had never been a worse time to sneeze”. Members wrote of car in garden, behind the curtain, writing contest, shortened candle, singing competition and cup of coffee.

The meeting concluded at 2.45pm with a punctuation exercise and the serving of afternoon tea.

The November assignment is “Smoke, fog and haze.

Write about not being able to see in front of you”.

Creative Fibre The AGM was held on Monday October 16.

Creative Fibre has had a busy eventful year with many interesting events and many planned before Christmas. There was an enjoyable retreat at Staveley with thanks to the caretaker for a good job done. New library books have been purchased and there is a day planned at Homebush on November 19.

We have many entries in the AMP show to come.

We look forward to a pot luck lunch at the show ground club room. The outgoing President Margaret Williamson gave her report and retreated the chair for the election for the coming year. We also had a report from the treasurer and Show and Tell.

Grey Power Ashburton Inc. On Monday October 16 President Peter Thomas welcomed approximately 60 members to the monthly General Meeting of Grey Power Ashburton.

Apologies were received from; Mary Smith; Pat and Rex Tarbotton; Pat Gibson; Elaine Busby; and Una Green; Betty moved their acceptance; seconded by Greer – carried.

Councillor Diane Rawlinson briefly outlined the “It’s Our Place” survey being conducted by the ADC and urged members to complete the forms available or complete the survey on line. Information from the survey is used in short and long term planning.

Peter gave a brief report on the recent Grey Power Zone meeting held in Ashburton and advised that the Federation will be having a membership drive aimed at the 50+ age group.

Peter then introduced our speaker for the afternoon, Gilbert Donaldson a local historian. Gilbert entertained members with stories from his schooldays and life in the county. He passed around many items he has accumulated over the years, including school books and reports. He has written several short histories for local organisations and has a wealth of local knowledge.

Cath passed a vote of thanks and presented Gilbert with a fruit tray.

Colin advised members that there appeared to be little progress in his efforts to get the ADC to deal with the lichen on the streets, but he will continue to annoy them, and members can still report any areas to him – (phone Colin on 308 8334). Also if any one requires transport to meetings, Colin will try to arrange.

The raffle was drawn and prizes distributed.

Our next meeting will be a Christmas Party on November 20; entertainment, songs, door prizes and fun for all. Please bring a non- perishable item for donation to local food banks. The meeting concluded 3.10 pm.

We need to give four-day tests a go As the 10-month rugby season slips quietly towards its anticlimactic end – a Bledisloe dead rubber and a tour that skips England – it is worth considering the fluid state of the summer game.

We might not be ready for it until the mercury rises another few notches but cricket has not been short on news. A potential move to four-day tests has been the biggest attention stealer and while some of the angst is justified, a lot of it remains misplaced.

The biggest issue in test cricket is not the amount of time it takes, but the pace of play. Cricketers and the authorities who run the game have singularly failed to grasp just how infuriating conferences between captain and bowler are between every over and, worse, during an over.

Add to that the mid-pitch conferences between batsmen that often involve squad members ambling on to the field with electrolytes, fresh gloves and a copy of Turf Digest and you have a recipe for switching off.

Cricket is a more analytical game than it once was and it’s a more dynamic game - the batting and fielding more so than bowling - but the amount of time wasted between bursts of action is inexcusable.

Modern over rates are the sport’s biggest joke. Address this and four-day tests can work.

of what you’d play in a five-day test.

Weather interruptions would

have a greater effect on the outcome but really, if you make a commitment to playing shorter

but faster, there are few logical arguments against at least giving the four-day concept a try.

Arguments around the “sanctity” of test cricket don’t wash.

Test cricket has been tinkered with since the days of WG Grace’s beard.

They have been played over three days, over four days, five days, six days and, on one infamous occasion, nine days, though that match between England and South Africa in Durban in 1939 ended in a draw as England had to catch a boat home.

Pitches used to remain uncovered, even during downpours.

Overs have contained as few as four balls and as many as eight.

The time before the fielding side gets a new ball has changed.

The lbw laws have changed.

Fielding restrictions have been added. Short-pitched bowling restrictions have been added. Television umpiring has been added, a pink ball has been added et cetera. Tests have been a giant experiment; it is part of the fabric of the sport.

Whatever way you slice it up, tests are increasingly unpopular with broadcasters and from that follows the sport’s administrators (as we can see with the allocation of a measly four tests this summer, one of them a pink-ball lottery).

If part of the solution is reducing the time it takes to play them, we’d be mad not to try it. - NZME

CLUB NEWS Mid Canterbury Central Friendship Club Our October meeting enjoyed a large turnout with 3 visitors welcomed. President Roger inducted 4 new members, 2 of whom were ladies. This was an historic occasion for they are the first ladies to join our club since membership was recently opened to all.

Our mini speaker was Murray Falkner. Murray was raised at Kowhai Bush near Springfield. After attending his local primary school he boarded at Waitaki Boys High. The Rector at the time was Brigadier Burrows, well known as a soldier during the war who ran the school on strictly military lines. On leaving, Murray worked on his father’s 1500 acre farm fencing and breaking in the remainder of the Kowhai Bush property which was once covered in Beech Forest.

He was later to serve on the Central Canterbury Power Board and his son now runs the family farm.

Our main speaker was Matt Markham, editor of The Ashburton Guardian. Matt was raised in Methven where he completed primary and secondary school.

His first job was with a potato growing and processing firm in Methven. He followed this with time as a meat inspector before becoming a barman at Speights Ale House. By now Matt was deeply involved in harness racing and through this secured a job with the Guardian as a racing and sports writer.

Ten years ago he completed a journalism course and immediately joined the Christchurch Press as their racing reporter. He was still there when the Christchurch earthquake struck and he described the harrowing experience of staff compiling reports in Cranmer Square Park with one shared laptop.

After a brief stint with NZ Harness Racing magazine, Matt re-joined the Ashburton Guardian as a sports writer and in November 2016 was appointed their editor. He has since moved the Guardian in a new direction and is seeing readership grow while many papers are declining.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club President Bernie Tutty welcomed members and visi-

tors to the October meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club. After the National Anthem had been sung, birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated.

New member Suzanne Small was inducted. There was discussion about the Christmas Lunch. The mini speaker, Betty then told us of some of the history of Glentunnel. The library was built in 1886, now repairs need to be done.

The Deans Bros settled in the area in 1842, the tunnel was built in 1875. There is a coal mine and bricks and drain pipes were also made in the area.

Guest speaker was Sheryl Stiven who spoke about recycling and the new bin system. There is a material recycling facility in Timaru, also Christchurch.

Mostly robots sort the recycling. Plastic is baled and stacked, then made into new stuff.

Sheryl showed us how to sort rubbish, to take the packaging out of boxes, then to flatten the boxes.

Polystyrene not to be put into the bins, also lids to be taken off containers. Sheryl is a member of the Waste Advisory Board. She recommended we use reusable coffee cups.

It is okay to leave labels on tins, but no batteries. No liquid to be left inside bottles, and to keep paper flat.

Supermarkets have bins for soft plastic that can be scrunched up, this is taken to Melbourne to be made into seats.

There will be an upcycle Wearable Waste section at the Ashburton show. Jean Wragg thanked Sheryl for her informative presentation.

Musical Club The final concert for the year for Ashburton Musical Club was held on Saturday October 14 at the Sinclair Centre. Plains Ladies Friendship Club Vera welcomed everyone to the October meeting.

There were two visitors and only one person confessed to having a birthday. There were twelve apologies. Reminder about the Fun, Friendship Luncheon in Christchurch on November 3. Treasurer reported all subs now paid. Jenette Storrier introduced her friend Lois Gibson who was then inducted into the club. The Almoner reported that no one was ill. The film for November 1 at 11am was Tommy’s Honours.

A small number of our club had attended the Friendship Club Church Service at St Stephens.

Our mini - speaker was Faye Ruddenklau. Through a series of Questions and Answers she told us of her interesting life, growing up in Oamaru, working in a lawyer’s office before becoming a maternity Nurse at Ashburton hospital, where she worked before meeting and marrying her husband. They had many happy years raising their family of three on a farm near Methven before retiring to Ashburton. Faye has since been very involved as a volunteer in several organisations especially Age Concern and the Cancer Support group. In her ‘spare’ time she enjoys gardening, baking, and tennis. Faye was thanked for her interesting talk. The raffles were won by Jenette Storrier and Aine Whiting.

After Morning tea we had a Fashion Parade with 8 of our members modelling clothes from the St Vincent de Paul shop. There were some lovely combinations of blouses, skirts, trousers and jackets and even a leisure suit. The ladies did a great job showing off the fashions. Donna, the shop manager, then spoke about her role in the shop and the various aspects of her job and the work of St Vincent de Paul a world-

wide organisation that was founded in NZ 150yrs ago and has been in Ashburton for 50yrs. They do a wonderful job helping those less fortunate than others: including food parcels, clothing and help those who have been in fires and other similar emergency situations. Donna was thanked for her very informative talk with a fruit basket.

The Lions Club of Ashburton The October Meeting was held at Hotel Ashburton on Wednesday 4 of the month.

Features of the meeting were a great talk and visual presentation by Greg Roadley on his ULTRA ARCTIC Marathon. Greg gave a full and fascinating insight into the joys, trials and tribulations of his successful challenge.

The District Governor Mrs Lorna Dench spoke of the Community aspect of the Lions Clubs and thanked our Club and all Lions Clubs for their efforts in this regard.

New members Bruce and Leah Thomson were inducted and welcomed with much pleasure to our Club.

Project reports were given on Boulevard Day held late September and forthcoming events such as the Ashburton Show Gates and Truck Show catering.

The Truck Show Event will see the second public use of our Lions Club Food Trailer. Max Cawte and his small committee are acknowledged for their huge effort in producing this food trailer. There has been significant and generous sponsorship and support from the Business Community involved in the manufacture of the food trailer. Our Club acknowledges and thanks all those business firms for their generous support.

The Lions Club of Ashburton is providing transport to assist Senior Citizens to attend the Dress Rehearsal of the Ashburton Intermediate School’s Bi-Annual Musical Production.

The Annual Lions Club of Ashburton Golf Tournament will be held on Thursday October 26. Proceeds go to our local Hospice.

The next month’s Club meeting is being held at the Aviation Museum. This should be a most interesting evening.

ABs go into attack mode

Skud out for 6 months Nehe Milner-Skudder has been ruled out for up to seven months following a successful surgery on his right shoulder. Posting on Facebook yesterday, the All Blacks winger said his surgeon was rapt with the operation that repaired Milner-Skudder’s labrum, rotator cuff, and bicep tendon. The explosive dynamo will spend the next couple of weeks resting while the wounds heal, before beginning his latest road to recovery. In the Facebook post he took the opportunity to tell fans he plans to “come back stronger”.

By Liam Napier It is more by chance than design that the All Blacks have arrived at the point of starting two power wings.

The way things have panned out, this could now be the favoured approach for the rest of the year.

When everyone is fit, the preference is probably still to have a bit more balance in the back three.

Not that it gets any easier for the Wallabies in Brisbane this week – Waisake Naholo and Rieko Ioane are sure to terrorise at times.

But in the previous two Bledisloe Cup tests, Ben Smith started on the right wing.

Fullbacks on the edge have become the new norm for the All Blacks.

Smith, Israel Dagg and Nehe Milner-Skudder are very different players but each spent considerable time in the No.15 jersey.

Before them, it was Cory Jane on the right wing.

Skills required at the back – confidence under the high ball, sound decision-making, an accurate kicking game – are now equally valuable on the wing.

Circumstances have conspired to strip the All Blacks of Smith, Dagg and Milner-Skudder for the remainder of the year, effectively forcing them to go all out attack with their finishers this week.

Crusaders fullback David Havili, a more subtle prospect, is in the mix and Damian McKenzie has proven he, too, is comfortable on the wing if needed.

Seta Tamanivalu, another power player, is expected to be included as a wing for the end of year tour.

Julian Savea also waits for a recall.

Naholo and Ioane are now the most experienced wings left in the All Blacks and, therefore, also the incumbents.

Gard back with ABs The security consultant who escaped conviction in a bugging case is reportedly back working with the All Blacks in Australia. Adrian Gard, 52, was placed on a one-year good behaviour bond last month for breaching his security licence when organising a sweep of the Sydney hotel where the All Blacks were staying ahead of a test match against Australia in August of last year. According to Newshub, Gard has been spotted with the All Blacks in Brisbane ahead of Saturday’s third Bledisloe Cup test.

Halafihi off to Lyon Taranaki flanker Toa Halafihi has signed for French club Lyon as an injury replacement for Englishman Carl Fearns, who has been ruled out of the rest of the Northern Hemisphere season. Twenty-threeyear-old Halafihi has been in good form for Taranaki this season, and is third among all players in carries. At Lyon, he will join former All Black Rudi Wulf, as well as Southland lock Josh Bekhuis and Sevens star Toby Arnold. He will travel to France following the conclusion of the Mitre 10 Cup. - NZME

“It probably just means they’ve got to make sure they expand their skill set,” All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster said of his two big wings.

“It doesn’t really change what we do.”

The All Blacks won’t mind if the Wallabies kick regularly.

With the right support and timing, this increases chances to open up from the back.

On the counter and from turnovers is where the All Blacks are most lethal.

Ioane is in superb touch but this week the focus falls on Na-

holo. His last two appearances, for the All Blacks in Argentina and Taranaki as they put away Manawatu to lock away the Ranfurly Shield, have signalled he could be on the cusp of finally finding his feet with the All Blacks.

Ever since failing to fire at the 2015 World Cup while struggling with a fractured leg, Naholo has been something of an enigma for the All Blacks.

He’s been consistently brilliant for the Highlanders but a string of untimely injuries have prevented him from truly making his mark on the test scene.

Naholo is much more than a finisher.

He is great on his feet and his strength in the tackle allows him to offload to put others

into space. With the path now clear for his first sustained run on the wing, he must grab it at Suncorp Stadium.

“His game for Taranaki was outstanding. It was great to see him running fast. It was clear and simple and it showed just how devastating he can be,” Foster said.

“He played well for us in Buenos Aires so that was pleasing.

He’s had a lot of niggles, disruptions and he hasn’t really had a full crack at it in terms of getting regular starts to get his real confidence on the international stage.

“I think we saw against Argentina he was moving in that direction and the Taranaki game was another step forward.”

Ireland locked in The Wallabies will host world No.4-ranked Ireland next June in a three-Test series, the Australian Rugby Union has confirmed.

The matches will take place at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium (June 9), Melbourne’s AAMI Park (June 16) and Sydney’s Allianz Stadium (June 23). It will be the first time the Lansdowne Cup has been contested over a three-match series, and Ireland’s first tour of Australia since 2010.

In brief Warner ‘pathetic’ Former England opener Marcus Trescothick has branded David Warner “pathetic”, opining that the vice-captain risks distracting Australia if he is outspoken this summer. Warner has recently outlined his plans to be aggressive and antagonistic during the Ashes, notably calling on teammates to find their inner “hatred” of the opposition. “As soon as you step on that line it’s war,” Warner said on the weekend. The comments have been widely derided in England, with 2005 Ashes winner Trescothick far from impressed.

“It’s pathetic,” he told the BBC. “To come out with those sort of comments is not needed. There’s always the hype that comes around before the Ashes, so I don’t think it’s something the (English) players will be drawn into.”

Spurs draw with Real Madrid Cristiano Ronaldo got the best of Harry Kane in the duel between two of Europe’s most prolific forwards, but Kane’s Tottenham celebrated after taking a 1-1 draw from Real Madrid in the Champions League yesterday.

Tottenham proved tough to crack against the defending champions at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium and held on for the draw that kept both clubs at the top of Group H and in good position to advance to the knockout round.

The English club scored first with an own-goal by Raphael Varane as the Madrid defender tried to clear a cross intended for Kane.

Ronaldo equalised for Madrid by converting a penalty kick just before halftime after Toni Kroos was fouled.

Kane had a great chance to

give Tottenham the victory but his close-range shot was saved by goalkeeper Keylor Navas midway through the second half in one of the game’s best scoring opportunities.

“They were going to have chances, it was going to be a tough game,” Kane said. “A point at the Bernabeu, you’d take that every day of the week. It shows how far we’ve come as a team.”

The unbeaten sides meet again in England in two weeks.

“We’ll try to win at Wembley.

We don’t need to change a lot,” Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said. “We aren’t happy as we were at home and we always want to win, but we had our chances.”

The teams remain tied for the group lead with seven points and the same number of goals scored and conceded.

In the other group match, APOEL held Borussia Dortmund to 1-1 at home, leaving both teams with one point each.

“This point we earned today means a lot,” Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino said. “It may help us advance from the group stage.”

Tottenham arrived looking for a good performance to show it can compete against the best in Europe. And it was back and forth at the Bernabeu.

“The result is not the most important thing,” Pochettino said.

“What makes me happy is the fact that we came here and competed against Real Madrid.”

All eyes were on Ronaldo and Kane, who arrived as the tournament’s top scorers after two group-stage matches. Kane had five and Ronaldo equalled him by converting the penalty yes-

terday. Tottenham opened the scoring in the 28th minute after Varane found his own net while trying to clear Serge Aurier’s cross directed to Kane, who was not able to get his foot to the ball.

Ronaldo’s goal came after Kroos was brought down by Aurier inside the area.

The Portugal forward sent a firm shot into the corner as Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris went the other way.

Ronaldo, who scored twice in each of the team’s first two games, was denied by the post on a fifth-minute header, and

by Lloris on a pair of dangerous shots in the second half.

Kane squandered what could have been the game-winner in the 71st after entering the area free from defenders but failing to get the ball past the Madrid goalie.

Italy to face Sweden in World Cup playoffs Four-time champion Italy will have to beat Sweden in a European playoff to qualify for its 15th straight World Cup. A regular at every World Cup since 1958, the Italians were drawn today to play in Sweden in the first leg of the playoff on November 10.

“A World Cup without Italy isn’t a World Cup,” said Italy team manager Gabriele Oriali, representing coach Gian Piero Ventura at the draw at FIFA headquarters.

Still, Oriali – who played on Italy’s 1982 winning team – cau-

tioned that “history and tradition don’t go out onto the pitch.”

In other pairings, it was: Northern Ireland vs. Switzerland; Croatia vs. Greece; and Denmark vs. Ireland. The first legs will be played from November 9-11, with the return games from November 12-14.

The four winners will enter the World Cup draw on December 1 at the State Kremlin Palace in Moscow.

Sweden got the opponent which coaches of the other three unseeded teams all said they wanted

to avoid. “If it’s worst or easiest or whatever, it doesn’t matter today because it’s Italy we’re going to play,” Sweden coach Janne Andersson said.

Beaumarchais travelling Beaumarchais will head to the central districts for his next start and a bold showing will see him travel further afield. The two-time winner, who finished runner-up in last season’s Gr.3 Manawatu Classic (2000m) and fourth in the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m), will step out in the Gr.3 Anuka Smoker Thompson Handicap (1600m) at Trentham on Saturday week. “If he performs well then he’ll keep going south to Christchurch for the Coupland’s Bakeries Mile,” co-trainer Jamie Richards said.

Beaumarchais recently resumed at Ruakaka where he finished third over 1400m. “We’re very pleased with him, it was hard to make ground from the back there and he did that,” Richards said.

A little shuffling from one of New Zealand’s strongest racing stables and a surprise entrant from the North Island has salvaged the time-honoured Ashburton Flying Stakes from potential demise on Labour Day. Concerns were circulating yesterday that the race, which is regarded as the key lead-up race to the New Zealand Trotting Cup in November, wouldn’t get off the ground due to a lack of nominations, but now with eight horses to face the post – there’s been a big sigh of relief from the Ashburton Trotting Club.

Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen, who held four of the original six nominations, added a further two horses to the mix yesterday to extend their own number of representatives to six and they will be joined by Robbie Burns and North Island visitor, No Doctor Needed.

The Steve Telfer trained North Islander flew down from his home base yesterday and will be based in Canterbury until Cup Week.

He brings strong North Island form to the table including a bold second to Jack’s Legend in last weekend’s Holmes DG at Alexandra Park.

“The total of wins I’ve had is, I think, somewhere in the sixties.

It’s been a long and very good association.

A daughter of Makfi, Bonneval was signed for by Baker for $150,000 at Karaka in 2015.

“Alastair and I had looked at her at Westbury Stud and then we went back for another look,” Rattray said.

Rattray acknowledged Bonneval to be a once-in-a-lifetime horse and said he was privileged to be involved with the mare.

“Whatever happens on Saturday it’s been fantastic,” he said.

“We’re very blessed to have her.”

Zabeel mare Lizzie L’Amour will attempt to turn her form around in next Wednesday’s Gr.3 Geelong Cup (2400m). The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained stayer failed to race up to expectations last time out when unplaced in the Listed Cranbourne Cup (2025m) and connections subsequently decided against a start in the Gr.1 Caulfield Cup (2400m). “There is the Geelong Cup and the Moonee Valley Cup, but we thought the Geelong track might suit her better,” Baker said.

“Of course she might bump into a couple of the internationals, but that’s the way it is at this time of year.”

Marky Mark well Group One winner Marky Mark is in good heart ahead of his upcoming campaign. “He’s well and trialled up nicely when he won at Ruakaka,” said Moira Murdoch, who trains the five-year-old with her daughter Kieran. “He’ll probably kick off at Ellerslie on October 28.” Marky Mark, who claimed the Gr.1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes at two, won races at Pukekohe Park and at Tauranga when sparingly raced last term.

“We wanted him to have a quieter season, he was quite busy as a two and three-year-old,” Murdoch said.

Jeffrey was the beloved son of Ngaio and Graham McKee of Ashburton, the beloved brother and brother in law of Carol and Louis Melchers, and Lester and Chantell McKee. Sport World series plans The sailing world is swirling with rumours that American billionaire Larry Ellison is poised to announce a World Series of Sailing event. The proposed series is believed to have events at several venues around the world with a spectacular trophy on offer from French fashion house Louis Vuitton. LV was a major sponsor at the America’s Cup in Bermuda this year, in which Team New Zealand lifted the Auld Mug from Ellison’s Oracle syndicate. Scuttlebutt Sailing News has it that teams from the United States, Japan, France and Sweden are already committed.

Mid Canterbury cricket fans shared their love of the game with the great New Zealand bowler Sir Richard Hadlee this week.

Hadlee was in town sharing his own family passion for the game, in a book called The Skipper’s Diary – the diary of his father Walter Hadlee, who captained the famous New Zealand team of 1949 on an eight-month tour to the United Kingdom after World War Two.

The achievements of the team, which became known simply as “the forty-niners” is more than just an account of a cricket tour, it is an historical document about not only cricket but world happenings at the time.

Hadlee said he wanted to honour his father’s contribution to New Zealand cricket and the forty-niners and the book was a remarkable story that deserved to be told.

The bowling great is touring cricket clubs to promote the book and a DVD about the tour.

It is available now online.

The tour was New Zealand’s rite of passage in the cricket world and our country earned respect as a cricket nation through the feats of the players.

They played 32 first class games, drew four test matches and lost only one of the 37 games they played.

Hadlee was at the Ashburton Domain cricket oval this week where a small group had the privilege of hearing the motivation behind the book.

spokesman Mike Southby said the forty-niners’ story was famous in cricket circles and put New Zealand cricket on the world map.

He bought copies of the diary, which Hadlee signed.

“A couple of the young guys also got photos and autographs.

It was pretty casual and he told his story about the book, his reason for doing it and the charities he is supporting.”

Hayward makes horror start to Celtics debut Boston star forward Gordon Hayward suffered a gruesome injury, breaking his left ankle just five minutes into his debut with the Celtics.

Hayward, who signed a fouryear, $128 million free agent contract recently, went up for an alley-oop pass and collided with LeBron James midway through the first quarter.

Vautin dropped Paul Vautin has broken his silence following revelations he was being axed from Nine’s NRL Footy Show after 23 years. The man nicknamed ‘Fatty’ responded to a message from WSFM’s Brendan Jones. Jones said he had reached out to Vautin after hearing Nine were ditching him in favour of having Erin Molan lead the network’s struggling NRL programme. “In the end nothing lasts forever,” Vautin wrote to Jones.

“I had a great run, especially for a short, chubby, red-head who played for both Manly and Queensland.”

Brennan on the move?
