Three fishermen missing off the coast of the Rakaia River mouth are feared dead.

An Ocean Fisheries trawler made a distress call at 4.30am yesterday about 12 nautical miles from the Rakaia River mouth.

Two Coastguard vessels, three commercial vessels, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and a fixed-wing search plane initiated a rescue mission at 6.30am.

However, at 2.30pm, 10 hours after the initial distress call was received, the police focus in their search for the crew of the FV Jubilee entered into a recovery phase.

Inspector Craig McKay said the aerial search identified debris thought to be from the boat – this was then verified by one of the vehicles involved in the search.

“Among the items recovered was an empty liferaft confirmed to be from the FV Jubilee along with a number of fishing bins and documents.

“Oil and related fluids were also present in the area but the vessel was not visible from the surface or the air.”

The crew had indicated in their distress call that they would be making their way to the life raft, he said.

Yesterday afternoon the Wellington-based NZ Police Dive Squad were also en-route to help with an underwater search.

More Toyota vehicles recalled More Toyota vehicles have been recalled in New Zealand following the global recall of faulty Takata airbags. A further 7340 vehicles were being recalled, a spokeswoman for Toyota New Zealand said. In May, Toyota New Zealand said up to 40,000 vehicles were being recalled as part of a global recall by the Japanese car manufacturer. New models in New Zealand that were covered by the extended recall were Yaris, Corolla, Avensis and Picnics, the spokeswoman said. Over six million Toyota cars were being recalled across the world. Owners of the cars with the problematic airbags would received a letter from Toyota New Zealand to explain if their car was affected.

Big Ben needs drastic repairs Big Ben, the British Parliament’s iconic clock, is so dilapidated it could grind to a halt altogether unless drastic repairs are carried out. A report presented to Britain’s cross-party Commons Finance Committee has set out a £29.2 million ($NZ66.2 million) plan for fixing the issues but the total repair bill could rise to as much as £40 million. It would see the mechanism shut down for four months - believed to be the longest stoppage in its 156year history. The document outlined the problems. “The clock currently has chronic problems with the bearings behind the hands and the pendulum. Either could become acute at any time, causing the clock to stop - or worse.” Action is also needed to combat “severe metal erosion, cracks in the roof and other structural defects” in the Elizabeth Tower. “There are major concerns that if this is not carried out within the next two to three years, the clock mechanism is at risk of failure with the huge risk of international reputational damage for Parliament,” the report said. “In the event of a clock-hand failure, it could take up to a year to repair due to the scaffolding needed.” The proposed £29 million “full refurbishment” would involve the clock being stopped for four months.

Blanchett receives British film honour Ian McKellen, Peter Jackson and other film greats have paid glowing tributes to Cate Blanchett as she accepted the British Film Institute’s highest honour. The Oscar-winning Australian was in London at the weekend to receive the institute’s 2015 fellowship which has been awarded to a line of revered actors before her. $4m for rare Bugatti A rare vintage Bugatti roadster is for sale for a cool $4 million, left behind by a reclusive mechanical engineer. Bob Turnbull was a familiar sight in the tiny Otago goldmining town of Ophir, roaring around in his vintage cars before disappearing into his ramshackle property. No one knew much about him, or what was inside his large, cluttered shed. When he died in 2012, aged 82, among Turnbull’s five half-restored cars was a 1934 Gangloff Roadster Type 57, once owned by a member of the Louis Vuitton family. Turnbull bought the car in 1958 for 475 pounds and began a 50-odd year restoration. Now the car, restored to concourse condition, is being advertised in Classic Car and Beaded Wheels magazines

Council rules out UFB roll-out

The Government might want local authorities to help fund the roll-out of ultra-fast broadband (UFB) in their patch, but that won’t be happening in Ashburton, says Ashburton District Council chief executive Andrew Dalziel.

Local authorities are currently competing for a share of the Government’s latest UFB funding pool and communications minister Amy Adams has suggested by stumping up cash, those local authorities could in-

crease their chances of securing a share of the government fund.

Ashburton is making a pitch for money to extend the UFB network around the district, and this is being done as part of a package, driven by the Timaru District Council.

In terms of using ratepayer money to increase coverage, however, that was not going to happen, Mr Dalziel said.

“It’s not the council’s role to put UFB out there. It’s not part of our infrastructure like things such as water, roads and stormwater and it’s not part of our

social infrastructure either. We need to stick to the basics,” he said.

Before any ratepayer commitment could be made to funding UFB roll-out, it would have to be debated by councillors and would then have to be tagged as planned spending in either an annual plan or a long-term plan, Mr Dalziel said.

Ashburton has the advantage of its lines company, EA Networks, undertaking to lay fibre optic cable to many rural areas around the district to allow it to service its network. It opted to

make the project a community one by ensuring the network extended to all rural schools.

Some rural properties were also able to access UFB through this network.

Chorus completed its UFB roll-out in Ashburton in March, making it the second town in New Zealand to have fibre optic cable laid on every street. But there are still many rural areas including Lake Hood, Methven and Rakaia that are still outside the network.

The Government intends to spend between $150 million and

$210 million extending UFB over the next seven years to ensure at least 80 per cent of New Zealanders have coverage.

It has yet to decide which towns will receive a share of the funding pool and has suggested that by pitching in with money as a co-investment, local authorities could improve their chances of securing government funds.

That suggestion has been widely criticised as creating a two-tier structure – wealthy areas where councils can afford to share costs and poorer areas where they cannot.

Walks a success despite weather

Wet and windy weather did not stop hardy garden-lovers attending two garden walks in Mid Canterbury on Saturday.

Mayfield Playcentre’s Homegrown Garden Tour and Fete was held in the morning while St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church’s garden walk in Winchmore was held in the afternoon.

Mayfield Playcentre president Cate Hogan said the weather put a slight dampener on the morning but more than 100 people from Ashburton, Darfield, Timaru and Christchurch came to support them.

“It was really successful considering the weather.’’

While she did not know how much money they had raised, it would all go towards the general running of the playcentre.

“It was a great fundraiser.’’

The weather had cleared enough in the afternoon for the Winchmore walks to be a great success.

Organiser Maureen Maginness said about 130 people turned up to the gardens.

“It went really well. We were very, very thrilled with it.’’

There were a lot of favourable comments about each of the four gardens on show, she said.

Like Ms Hogan, she did not know how much was raised yet but it would have been a very good amount, Mrs Maginness said.

Taiwanese visitor impressed

A trip to Ashburton by Taiwanese ambassador David Wu on Saturday was very positive, Ashburton mayor Angus McKay says.

The meeting with Mr McKay included a visit to a restored Chinese oven in Allenton, the industrial estate, the site of a proposed goat milk formula plant and a meeting with Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers president Willy Leferink.

Mr McKay said Mr Wu had planned to meet with all mayors in New Zealand.

The meeting was very worthwhile for both parties, he said.

“We talked about opportunities of tourism into the Ashburton area.”

“It was a very positive, friendly meeting.”

Mr McKay said he hoped this visit would help to cement the district’s relationship with Taiwan in the future.

Before the meeting, Mr Wu was already impressed with the district from a previous visit where he picnicked in the Ashburton Domain with his family, Mr McKay said.

“The last known point of the FV Jubilee was in an area where the depth ranges up to 45m,” Inspector McKay said.

A Fairton woman’s garage was destroyed by strong winds yesterday. Jen Branje said there was a freak gust which blew the corrugated iron roof off her garage and threw it onto an aviary that had just been built by her husband.

“I’ve never experienced any nature related damage. “That was my first experience with Mother Nature and it wasn’t good.’’ She secured the corrugated iron to stop it flying anywhere else and contacted her insurance company.

The trawler had three male crew members on board who were due to return last night or today.

All the crew were long-term and were all from outside of the Christchurch area with families, he said.

“Our focus is very much on helping with the SAR search and supporting the families,” Mr Stark said.

“There’s three pretty good guys out there at the moment.’’

When the boat left on Saturday there was no indication of rough weather, he said.

New PE shed for school following arson After waiting nearly all year, students at Mt Somers Springburn School will be able to use their PE shed again.

The shed and $8500 worth of sporting equipment was damaged following a deliberately lit fire at the end of January.

Principal Brent Gray said the new shed was completed last Thursday and they hoped to be able to start using it this week.

The equipment was all replaced quickly through insurance but has had to be crammed into wheelie bins and an old caretaker’s shed for the last nine months.

Hinds Rural Fire Force and Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade members attended a fire on Arundel-Rakaia Gorge Road at 10.43pm on Friday. Ashburton district principal rural fire officer Don Geddes said three or four heaps of branches, five metres in diameter, had been set alight and were threatening to spread onto a nearby plantation. He did not know when they were lit but it appeared to have been recently. The owner of the property could not be found but if the fires were lit on the Friday it was very careless to leave them, Mr Geddes said. No damage occurred.

A woman harness driver was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital following a crash at the Methven Races yesterday. Methven Trotting Club racing manager Fiona Stuart confirmed that driver Samantha Ottley, 25, was transported to hospital following a crash during a race at 2pm. Four horses and drivers were involved in the crash.

A St John team onsite provided first aid and paramedic services for the event and they requested an air ambulance to transport the patient to hospital. The driver’s condition was last night reported as stable.

Fall victim critical A woman who fell from a central Auckland building yesterday afternoon is in a critical condition.

It was initially reported by police that she had died. Police went to Albert St - outside the Crowne Plaza - after the woman fell from a building there at 2.30pm. The woman was now in a serious condition at Auckland Hospital, police said.

Body recovered A body was recovered from Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour yesterday. The body is yet to be formally identified, but police have been searching the area for missing Indian student Mandeep Singh. Shortly after 2pm crew aboard Police launch Deodar located a body, Auckland Police district commander, Superintendent Richard Chambers confirmed. The body was yet to be formally identified, Mr Chambers said.

Quakes shake up cultural diversity

Yesterday’s Muddy Good Run saw 830 people slip and slide their way through a gruelling obstacle course in Rakaia.

The annual event, which is in its third year, drew people from all over the district and further afield to compete in the course which started and finished in

the Rakaia Domain.

Organiser John Moore said the best part of the day was seeing people absolutely covered in mud with huge smiles on their faces.

Many competitors also adopted a fancy dress theme.

“It’s great to see everyone out there enjoying themselves.’’

The number of entries ex-

ceeded last year and the whole event would have drawn a crowd of more than 1000.

“It was great seeing so many people there.’’

It was also a good way of getting children doing something outdoors rather than being stuck on computer games.

Yesterday’s blustery conditions caused a few hiccups with

some difficulty securing tents and the races had to start 20 minutes late, he said.

A number of schools who were there fundraising managed to make a lot of money, Mr Moore said.

First in the 10 kilometre men’s race was Adrian Young who defended his title from last year.

Police seek knife following domestic incident Police are asking Tinwald residents to check their front yards for a knife following a domestic incident yesterday.

Police were alerted to the incident at a Tinwald address at around 3.45pm yesterday afternoon.

Sergeant Richard Scott said no one was injured but a car at the address had been damaged and the occupants threatened with a knife before a man fled

the scene on foot.

“The knife has not been located and we ask the residents of Johnstone Street to check their front gardens and contact police straight away if they find one on their property. Please do not pick it up.”

Police would also like to hear from anyone who witnessed a man wearing dark clothing with a youth aged around 14 years running along Thomson

Street at around 3.45pm yesterday afternoon.

“The pair are then understood to have continued along Johnstone Street, over State Highway One to the corner of Compton Street and George Street in Tinwald,” Sergeant Scott said.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested and is due to appear in Ashburton District Court today charged with possession of

an offensive weapon, threatening to kill, aggravated burglary, breach of protection order and wilful damage.

Anyone who saw the man and youth or finds a knife on their property should contact Ashburton Police Station on 03 3078400.

Invercargill death sparks murder inquiry A homicide investigation is under way following the death of a 28-year-old man at an Invercargill property.

The Otago Daily Times understands the man was pushed through a glass door by a 17-year-old male and died from excessive bleeding as a result.

Police could not comment on that, but confirmed in a statement they had been called to

an altercation at a Dee Street address at about 7.15pm on Saturday.

Detective Sergeant Stu Harvey, of Invercargill, said about 20 police staff were working on the investigation.

“We’ve gathered preliminary witness statements – we don’t know what’s correct and what’s not with the people we’ve spoken to,” he said.

“We don’t really want to say anything at the moment.”

A forensics team was at the house yesterday and police were hoping to complete a post mortem by today, Mr Harvey said.

No charges had yet been laid in relation to the incident.

A St John Ambulance spokesman confirmed the 28-yearold was taken by ambulance to Southland Hospital where he

later died from his injuries.

The 12-room property where the incident occurred is understood to be a boarding house and is on the market through real estate company The Professionals NZ. A neighbour of the house said she was not home at the time of the incident but people frequently came and went from the property.

The earthquakes changed the look of Christchurch forever.

And not just the demolished broken houses, churches, and office blocks, but its people too.

Historically a predominantly white, conservative city - often described as being the most English of all New Zealand’s centres - the quakes have shaken free its stereotypes.

Its $40 billion rebuild has attracted a rush of migrant workers - mostly Filipinos, followed next by the Irish, the English, Hungarian, Romanian, Indonesian, Chinese, and South Africans.

Christchurch now boasts a staggering 180 different ethnicities.

“The increase in diversity is very noticeable,” said Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend.

“Christchurch before the earthquakes was a very monocultural, conservative, inwardlooking city, and post-earthquake it’s become much more culturally diverse and celebrating different cultures and that’s been quite a big learning for the city.”

Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck thinks, and hopes, that the highly-skilled workers will stay on beyond the rebuild work.

Along with the rebuild work they’re doing, it’s also noticeable they’ve brought their indigenous food which is now available in restaurants, cafes, and outlets across the city and its suburbs.

Ms Buck thinks that most Cantabrians welcome the influx as being “incredibly positive and very exciting”.

“Apart from Maori who got here ahead of all of us, the rest of us are all immigrants anyway.”

New migrants face many barriers when arriving in a foreign land. And that looks set to continue, according to Christchurch Migrants Centre Trust general manager Henry Jaiswal.

Social dislocation and a disconnection from social services are the main issues for new migrants.

But new migrants bring with them a high work ethic, a richness in culture, new and varied food, and mixed race marriages, Mr Jaiswal said.

“When you strip down all the race and colour, then we are all human beings.”

Some of Ashburton’s top card players rallied together in aid of a local community group this week.

The Ashburton Bridge Club held its annual fundraiser on Thursday, to raise money for Riding for the Disabled (RDA).

President Trish Small said groups from around the district are encouraged to apply for money and the bridge club

ensures the money is fairly dispersed.

Table fees paid by the club members as well as raffles on the night resulted in the RDA receiving $900, Mrs Small said.

Around 60 members turned out on the night, “not a bad turnout”, she said.

RDA senior coach Maxine Hooper said the money was much appreciated and would go towards the purchase of two new horses.

One horse is on trial at the moment, but another still needs to be found.

“We’re really chuffed,” she said.

To show their appreciation, members of the RDA put on a supper for the bridge club members and Mrs Hooper gave a short speech to inform the members about the need for additional horses.

For the right horse life at the RDA is relatively easy, two

riding sessions a week and plenty of school holiday time to enjoy a change of scenery and regular workouts with adult riders.

However it’s not just horses the RDA is looking for, it needs volunteers too – horse lovers, school kids, anyone with an passion for helping out.

People interested in becoming a volunteer can contact Mrs Hooper at Community House.

Fall victim ‘almost sliced buttocks off’

Scammers target Kiwi sex cheats

A young man who “almost completely sliced his buttocks off ” after falling awkwardly through glass is recovering well in hospital, a Christchurch hospital spokesman said.

The incident seriously injured his happened shortly after midday at a property on Karamu Street, in Riccarton, which was known for hosting a pre-party ahead of the University of Canterbury’s annual Tea Party event.

An ambulance officer told 3News the man had “almost completely sliced his buttocks off ”.

Extortionists are using data hacked from the cheating website to track down Kiwis and demand thousands of dollars not to inform cheaters’ partners and families.

The nation’s internet safety organisation is now receiving several reports a day, compared with none two weeks ago.

“It’s taken this long for the cyber criminals to go through it [the dump of hacked data] and match up the Ashley Madison profiles with other information they have on people,” said NetSafe’s executive

Working hard to recover from two years of “barely leaving the couch” after battling mental health problems, Leisa McNaughton is now setting off to cycle the length of New Zealand with her faithful “best mate” Indy beside her.

The 47-year-old Canterbury woman ended up house-bound and struggling with mental health problems in 2011. In 2014 she left the care of Mental Health Services in Christchurch after connecting with mental health specialists who set her on the recovery path.

Before her “complete breakdown” Ms McNaughton worked in sales in a job that took her all over the South Island, was a keen endurance athlete, and had travelled the world.

“Then for two years I barely left the couch,” she said.

“I shut the front door and I basically wasn’t letting anyone in or going out.”

Now, she’s back on track and rebuilding her love for life by setting off to ride the length of New Zealand with Indy - her border collie, Burmese mountain dog cross.

“I was what they called a high-functioning person... and it all stopped,” she said.

Becoming more “self-accepting” was an important part of recovery for Ms McNaughton.

“It’s been a year of recovery and a long time spent planning this.”

She hoped her story would help others, she said.

“I think in terms of a message to help other people, its really important to find people that they can talk to.”

Part of that recovery was a cycle from Twizel to Oamaru with Indy alongside her, and it went well.

She came up with the idea to get back into her endurance sport, travel New Zealand, and raise money for regional charities. The journey from Cape Reinga to Bluff will take her four months.

“It’s perfect for me. It’s everything I did [before the breakdown], and it’s helping people. I would never do it without Indy, and she is just great for starting the conversation with people,” Ms McNaughton said.

Indy rides in a carriage attached to her owner’s mountain bike, which he seems very at home in. The carriage is padded, has a sun shade and is big enough for him to sit up inside, or lie down inside.

Is our health system in crisis?

I

f there’s one subject guaranteed to unite people, it’s a suggestion that the health system might not be up to scratch.

In New Zealand we’ve had a public health system that’s among the best in the world.

It’s served us well for generations but in recent years that’s changed.

Today we have health care by budget. And those budgets are tight and getting tighter.

Ask anyone who’s waiting for surgery. Most can’t even make it onto a waiting list or if they’re on the list it appears to be a list without end. The lucky few have medical insurance, but that’s dropping off hundreds of budgets every day. It goes and so does choice.

Access to health care has become a huge issue for New Zealand and so has the quality of care that’s offered. No one blames the professionals, who’re overworked and stretched to breaking point; we all blame the system.

It’s become cumbersome, top heavy with bureaucrats and everyone hides behind the privacy screen ensuring information that the public needs is usually the information the public cannot access. There no longer appears to be any transparency in the health sector.

But apparently, there are at least some within the halls of health power who do have a conscience. There’s a report out there lurking behind the closed health doors that is apparently pretty damning.

That report from the Canterbury District Health Board to the Ministry of Health tells of a system in crisis, one where staff are at breaking point trying to cope with a workload without end.

And if it involves the CDHB, it involves Ashburton Hospital, Ashburton doctors and Ashburton people. It’s time the privacy shutters came off and the health bosses fronted up and dropped the smoke screens. This is our health system, our health and if the system is stuffed then we need to know.

he key to success for any region in New Zealand is to build on its own unique mix of economic opportunities and competitive advantages to attract investment, and grow jobs and incomes.

Last week the 2015 Regional Economic Activity Report was released. The report highlights the economic opportunities for regions across New Zealand.

The report shows primary industries continue to dominate the Canterbury region outside of Christchurch.

The Ashburton District produced $1.69 billion in GDP for the year to March 2012, $562 million of that from agriculture followed by manufacturing at $192 million.

Dairy farming experienced strong growth between 2007 and 2014 with dairy cow numbers continuing to increase faster in Canterbury than anywhere else in New Zealand, driven by good financial returns and the availability of irrigation and supplementary feed.

The agricultural sector is a strong employer in the Ashburton District with 4600 people employed in agricultural activities in the year to March 2015, 24 per cent of our working population. Almost 3000 people are employed in manufacturing,

15.4 per cent of the district’s employment.

The economic activity report has also confirmed that labour supply remains tight in Canterbury with the unemployment rate about half of that for the rest of New Zealand.

Canterbury unemployment is running at 3.2 per cent while the national rate is 5.7 per cent.

Labour force participation in Canterbury is extremely high at 72.7 per cent with the national figure 69.1 per cent.

Canterbury farmers, along with all New Zealand exporters, will benefit from the recently agreed Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP). There is no doubt in my mind that the

TPP is good for the people of my electorate and a win for regional New Zealand.

It unlocks access to over 800 million potential customers and enables our farmers to compete on a level playing field with local suppliers and those with existing free trade agreements.

TPP will bring annual savings of $102 million for the dairy sector, $72 million for meat, and $26 million for fruit and vegetables.

I am pleased more details of the TPP agreement are coming through so I can answer more of the questions constituents have put to me.

Migrants pour into Slovenia Nearly 3000 migrants trying to reach northern Europe crossed into Slovenia from Croatia on Saturday, having been forced to change their route after Hungary closed off another border with razor wire.

Slovenia’s government said 2700 men, women and children had crossed by late Saturday from Croatia into its territory, where Ljubljana deployed soldiers at the border to help police with “logistics and equipment”.

The first arrivals, about 600 of them, went by bus to the border crossings of Gruskovje

and Petisovci. Many had already spent weeks trekking up through Greece and Macedonia before crossing Serbia to reach the Croatian border.

After registering them at border checkpoints, Slovenian authorities were to transport them to the Austrian frontier from where they could continue to Germany, the preferred destination for many.

A majority of the migrants were from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, UNHCR spokeswoman Caroline van Buren said at the Petisovci checkpoint.

“They are fleeing from war

... They are literally running for their lives,” van Buren said, adding that the procedure for now was running smoothly.

“Unlike other countries, Slovenia had time to prepare ... It’s not perfect, but things are moving.”

The Croatian government has said it will continue to ferry migrants across the country by bus and train as long as Slovenia and Germany kept their borders open.

Hungary closed its frontier with Croatia to migrants early on Saturday in a bid to block the path of streams of refugees, a

month after it sealed its border with non-EU neighbour Serbia - until then the main entry point into the EU for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty.

Later on Saturday, a special train with about 1200 migrants on board arrived at the Sredisce ob Dravi crossing, guarded by more than 100 policemen, said an AFP correspondent at the scene.

Police were organising the transfer of the travellers from train carriages to 25 buses waiting to take them to registration centres before their next journey to Austria.

New Delhi reels after young girls raped A toddler and a five-year-old girl have been raped in separate attacks in New Delhi, with at least one gang-raped, as activists warn of an “epidemic” of sexual violence in the Indian capital.

The two-and-a-half-year-old girl was abducted from a religious event in west Delhi by two men on Friday night and raped before being dumped in a park near her home, relatives and police say.

In a separate incident on the other side of the city, the fiveyear-old was lured to a neighbour’s house and raped by three men.

The two attacks come as New

Delhi grapples with a grim litany of sexual attacks against women - and in several recent cases, children - that have sparked outrage in India and abroad.

“We have launched a manhunt for the suspects. So far no one has been arrested,” Pushpendra Kumar, West Delhi police chief, said of the younger girl’s case.

“Two men were involved in the abduction of the girl and the tests have confirmed rape,” Kumar said, adding that further examinations would show whether both men raped the toddler.

He said they found the

younger child bleeding profusely several hours after she went missing.

Police have released CCTV footage of two men riding away on a motorbike with the victim.

Police arrested three men overnight in the case of the five-year-old victim, whom tests showed was raped multiple times, after locals managed to catch her alleged assailants and hand them over to the authorities.

“Her clothes were partially torn with blood spots all over them. Some locals saw her and she told them she was sexually assaulted,” police in eastern Delhi said.

“Some of the locals then barged into the house and caught them (the alleged perpetrators) before handing them over to us,” the officer said.

Both girls are undergoing medical treatment but are believed to be out of danger.

The latest attacks come eight days after a four-year-old girl was allegedly raped and slashed with a blade before being abandoned by a railway track in the capital.

Police arrested a 25-year-old man in that attack, in which the young girl suffered severe internal injuries.

The hunt that killed one of the biggest elephants seen for years in Zimbabwe was legal, according to wildlife authorities. The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (ZimParks) said the elephant was killed last week in the southeastern part of the country and had tusks weighing 54 and 55 kilograms respectively. It said proceeds from the hunt would go towards wildlife conservation. “On the 7th of October 2015, an adult male elephant was hunted as a trophy by a foreign client through a locally registered safari company in Malipati Safari area,” the ZimParks statement said. It said the area was “allocated sustainable quotas and hunting permits for all wildlife species including elephants on annual basis”.

Boat capsizes At least 12 people have drowned when a boat capsized in the Black Sea near Odessa in southern Ukraine. “The reason for this tragedy were storms and an absence of lifejackets. Twelve people drowned and one is missing,” said Volodymyr Jmak, a deputy of the governor of Odessa region. He added that the vessel, the Ivolga, had been transporting 36 people, including three crew, when it sank mid-afternoon. Jmak said the remaining 23 passengers were safe of whom 18 remained in hospital.

Wedding crash At least 15 members of a wedding party, including three children, have been killed when a truck they were travelling in collided with a bus in southern India. The accident occurred at the weekend in Andhra Pradesh state, when the truck carrying around 40 wedding party members hit a passenger bus coming from the opposite direction. Police say the truck caught fire, leaving many trapped inside the burning vehicle. At least 25 were injured in the accident near Kandukur town, some 350 kilometres from state capital Hyderabad. Locals and emergency workers rescued the trapped passengers, who were moved to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Police could not confirm whether the deaths were caused by the impact of the crash or subsequent fire.

Cruising with a difference

P

apua New Guinea is a rare and exotic cruise destination of misty mountains, smoking volcanoes, jungle drums, bare-breasted dancers and shy excited smiles from locals. A place where travellers not only connect with ancient tribal cultures, but also with compelling Australian wartime stories.

For the visitor, the beauty of the landscape and of the people with their big-hearted welcome is striking.

“The locals are very friendly and they really want us to know their country,” says Sun Princess shore excursions manager Elena Lorini, an Italian who has worked on cruise ships all over the world since 2000.

“You have more interaction here with locals than a lot of other ports and they put in more effort. I find it amazing.

The passengers love it here. Its a completely different destination.”

On a recent cruise to PNG on the Sun Princess out of Brisbane, our 2000 passengers sail into fascinating ports in Rabaul, Alotau in Milne Bay and Kiriwina and Doini islands, where they adventure ashore to interact with locals in a big way.

As Shelley Dempsey found out recently Papua New Guinea is a tourist’s mecca with its stunning landscape and its big-hearted people. through villages and schools, dance in tribal costume, sing us heartfelt songs of welcome and tell us about their ancient culture of bride prices, betel nut, mu-mu food, yams and shell money as currency.

Our guide in Rabaul describes how he survived the volcano eruption in Rabaul that devastated the town in 1994.

“We were watching an NRL game on TV when it happened,” George Diap says.

“The TV was shaking and I was the youngest, so they made me hold the TV. We walked out of town after the game finished and the old people told us to go.”

Princess Cruises started cruising to PNG only two years ago, but a dozen more trips are scheduled for next year and 2017.

While Princess and P&O are the main cruise lines, PNG is also attracting attention from others such as Cunard and National Geographic, which sent their first ships in September.

Milne Bay Province, which takes in the Trobriand Island group and is now a cruise hub, will host an incredible 57 cruise

port calls next year.

With all this new attention, its a good idea to get there before it changes.

At present, life is still simple on the islands, with an innocence and shyness among locals and we found their sightseeing tours ashore to be rough and ready, but surprisingly good.

We visited the Rabaul war museum and cemetery, where 1036 soldiers from World War One and World War Two from Australia, New Zealand and other countries are buried.

For one of our ship passengers from Ballina, this was a personal and emotional pilgrimage as she found the name of a relative listed as missing in action from 1945.

She was able to pay tribute to her lost uncle Dick by writing in the memorial record book.

We also had on the ship two 94-year-old war veterans who had fought in PNG. For me and my 78-year-old father, our trip on the Sun Princess was also a trip back in time, as we lived in Madang on the mainland northern coast from 1968 to 1972, where he worked in aviation and we sur-

vived a 7.0 magnitude quake.

As we walk among the locals, I speak to them in broken Pidgin.

“Papa bilong me,” I say and they smile.

At the market, they offer dad a walking stick to buy. Not yet, he replies and they laugh with a thumb’s-up.

In Rabaul, Diap takes us to World War Two Japanese war tunnels, to a volcano observatory and also to a ghostly site with a bubbling hot spring to view the black volcano that erupted in 1994, and is still smoking.

The capital can be violent, along with other PNG towns such as Lae, but we see no trouble apart from one handbag snatch in Alotau, which is swiftly dealt with by locals and the bag is returned.

American travel agent Beverly Broger, a veteran of 70 cruises, says this is one of her best trips.

“It was really exotic for us and we absolutely loved it,” she says.

“Its totally unique.”

Forwards fizz, backs run riot

By Patrick Mckendry It was Champagne rugby by the All Blacks backs against France at the Millennium Stadium, but they were toasting the efforts of their forwards afterwards.

There was a suspicion after the French lost their pool game to Ireland on this ground a week ago that they were vulnerable to a fired-up and direct side, but there hasn’t been a lot of evidence of that among the All Blacks’ performances at this World Cup - the second halves of their victories over Argentina and Tonga excepted.

This time the big men stepped it up, and the backs, who scored six of the nine tries, cashed in.

They were brutal against the French, with loose forward Jerome Kaino having one of his best tests for years, and it was backed up with skill from locks Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock, No8 Kieran Read, and even props Owen Franks, Charlie Faumuina and Joe Moody.

Carter, who kicked eight from 10 kicks at goal and provided a supreme assist for one of Julian Savea’s three tries, said the All Blacks always possessed the self belief needed to put the French away.

“The pool stage wasn’t perfect but we were trying certain things and it was all gearing towards this game here.

“This was our final tonight.”

One regret for Moody It was a match in which just about everything went right for the All Blacks and the recently arrived Joe Moody, but the loosehead prop, who was surprised to find himself on the field in the first half as an injury replacement, had cause for one regret. And that was the decision by his parents to cancel their flights after he failed to make the initial squad of 31. As a late call-up for Tony Woodcock, Moody only arrived in Wales six days before the quarter-final. His whirlwind week was topped by his replacing Wyatt Crockett 28 minutes into the magnificent 62-13 victory, and producing a superb reverse-flick pass to send Tawera Kerr-Barlow in for a try.

Hansen’s faith justified A glass of wine, maybe two, a smile, a few choice one liners no doubt and then back to business in the morning - that will be All Black coach Steve Hansen’s way of absorbing a brilliant performance at Millennium Stadium. The All Blacks were deadly. They were brilliant. They were about as good as they have been at any stage in the last decade. Hansen has every right to feel the smugness that comes with being able to say ‘told you so’.

Meads Cup hopes dashed

Mid Canterbury’s aspirations of a third successive Meads Cup triumph were dashed at the Ashburton Showgrounds on Saturday in a 26-11 semi-final loss to Wanganui.

The Hammers struggled against a well-drilled Wanganui defence, and failed to impose themselves at the breakdown as the Butcher Boys took a deserved win and booked a place in the Meads Cup final.

Mid Canterbury fullback Andrew Letham failed to open the scoring from a kickable penalty after three minutes in to a slight breeze, but was on target a minute later to put his side 3-0 ahead.

Wanganui centre Trinity Spooner-Neera then levelled the score at 3-3 from a well-taken penalty before slotting two more to push the visitors’ lead out to six points.

The penalty exchange continued, and Letham failed to hit the target on the angle from the edge of Wanganui’s 22 before Spooner-Neera was successful from his fourth penalty for a 12-3 score at the break.

The Hammers began the second period with urgency, but Wanganui’s defensive line held firm before the away side were down to 14 with lock Jon Smyth sin-binned for an infringement in the ruck.

Letham reduced the deficit to six points from a penalty 10 minutes in to the second period, and lock Maikeli Mudu came close from a charge down which forced a clearance well inside Wanganui’s 22.

Against the run of play, Wanganui’s Samu Kabunavanua scored the first try of the clash.

The wing was first to his long-range kick-and-chase to dot down under the posts and Spooner-Neera collected the extras from a simple conversion.

If the Hammers needed a lifeline with 15 minutes to play, skipper Jon Dampney certainly delivered.

Following a period of sustained pressure, the loose forward charged over in the corner for Mid Canterbury’s first try of the afternoon to bring his side within seven points.

id Canterbury captain Jon Dampney is disappointed that the Hammers’ charge for a Meads Cup hat-trick is over following a frustrating 26-11 loss to Wanganui on Saturday.

Dampney, who scored Mid Canterbury’s only try of the match, said silly errors proved costly, but backed the Butcher Boys against Hanan Shield rivals South Canterbury in Saturday’s final and vowed to return to the fray for the Hammers’ 2016 campaign.

“It’s pretty gutting.

“I think our execution let us down; they were up for the challenge and we knew they would be,” he said.

“We’ve had some great battles over the years, but silly penalties and things let us down.

“Once you let them get ahead it’s hard to bring it back, but it wasn’t through a lack of trying, we gave it our all.”

As the conversion left Letham’s right boot the cheers of the Mid Canterbury faithful for the likely-looking kick were abruptly silenced when the attempt ricocheted off the post.

Mid Canterbury regrouped and looked to set up camp in Jason Caskey’s side’s half before a wayward pass was intercepted by inside centre Poasa Waqanibau, who put the hammer down over 70 metres with Mid Canterbury’s Matt Thatcher in hot pursuit.

The centre’s persistence paid off, while Waqanibau was midswan dive over the try line, Thatcher knocked the ball from his grasp and out of play to keep Mid Canterbury in with a chance.

As the minutes dwindled, Spooner-Neera extended the North Islanders’ lead with another penalty before Simon Dibben touched down in the corner for Wanganui, and Spooner-Neera struck the con-

version with the last kick of the contest for a 26-11 score line.

Hammers coach Grant Keenan said basic errors and poor execution cost his side, but credited Wanganui for capitalising on the mistakes.

“I think we showed some good desire and we prepared well, it just wasn’t our day,” he said.

“Due credit to Wanganui, but if you look where they got their points, it was from four penalties and two tries from our mistakes, but then as good sides do they made the most of our errors.”

Wanganui’s assistant coach Jason Hamlin said his team had addressed the defensive frailties that were exposed by Mid Canterbury during the 30-28 loss in the second week of the Heartland season, and had prepared well for the Hammers’ attacking style.

“We wanted to be able to close down the space and time

on Murray (Williams).

“Obviously he’s crucial to Mid Canterbury, so we wanted to shut him down as much as possible,” he said.

“Since they beat us at Cooks (Gardens), we’ve really stripped it back and addressed our defensive game, and also to get a lot of numbers in at the breakdown, so I think that paid off.”

Wanganui will now take on South Canterbury in the Meads Cup final in Timaru on Saturday, while King Country face North Otago in the Lochore Cup final.

Roulston ‘no certainty’

By Andrew Alderson They’ve got the resources, yet they’ve never been hungrier.

That is the riddle surrounding Cycling New Zealand’s high-performance men’s track programme, as they round the bend into Olympic year.

Up to 18 riders are vying for nine positions at Rio. All are either former world elite champions, junior champions or Olympic medallists.

It will arguably be the most difficult team selection across the entire Games programme because New Zealand will be a medal contender in all five disciplines - the team pursuit, omnium, keirin, individual and team sprints.

Results leading to the Rio selection will be ranked after February’s world championships and the team selected according to which discipline rates as the best gold medal prospect.

At last year’s world championship, the team pursuit took gold, the team sprint silver, Eddie Dawkins earned silver in the keirin, Aaron Gate was fifth in the omnium and Sam Webster was sixth in the individual sprint.

The depth is further highlighted by the return of double Olympic medallist Hayden Roulston from the road.

Despite his pedigree, the 34-year-old is far from a guaranteed selection.

The way the UCI governing body system is structured means his road credentials could help in swapping him between disciplines to best use the nine spots, but many of the 18 candidates also have strong road racing careers.

silver and three bronze) have been earned by Kiwi men on the track since Beijing in 2008.

That number could double at Rio on the current reckoning.

Add further medal prospects in the women’s team pursuit, world champion time triallist Linda Villumsen and London silver medal-winning BMXer Sarah Walker.

New Zealand has become a factory for producing riders who star in the velodrome and progress to international road careers.

The country’s track programme is coveted in the pedalling world. It has an allpurpose training hub in Cambridge, which includes the Avantidrome, and will receive $17.4 million over the Rio

Olympic cycle, second to rowing among New Zealand highperformance sports.

Head track coach Dayle Cheatley says the maxim behind the depth and sustainability is “friendly competitiveness”.

An open mind is mandatory in a selection framework where athletes, particularly in the keirin, individual sprint, omnium and road, might be expected to double up if the team pursuit and sprint are deemed the likeliest medal pillars.

“All athletes understand priority will be given to the best medal outcomes.

“We are under no illusions that tough decisions need to be made in piecing together the framework. It’s a good problem to have with the quality across

those [men’s endurance and sprint] squads.

“We will combine international results, training history and how much each rider’s skillset makes the team go faster.

“We have a fair idea, but sometimes you can surprise yourself or the athlete as to how good they are elsewhere.”

The team sprint of Sam Webster, Ethan Mitchell and Eddie Dawkins looks relatively settled but the team pursuit, despite being world champions, presents the most competition.

A surfeit of junior talent is rising to challenge the incumbents and past Olympic medallists like Roulston, Bewley and Marc Ryan.

Ryan was injured before February’s world championships and Regan Gough, who turned 19 this month, was confirmed in his spot just hours before the event.

He reduced the average age of the winning team to 20.

Gough, a cousin of Olympic medallist Westley, says Cambridge has provided the perfect training base to build a campaign for those not on professional overseas contracts.

“I can actually see [the velodrome] from my house. We’re lucky to have that facility with the track, gym, physio and medical staff all close. It might have revolutionised sport in New Zealand and hopefully we can help it pay dividends.”

The New Zealand track team fly to Cali, Colombia, this week for the next World Cup (October 30-November 1). The following World Cup is in Cambridge (December 5-6) followed

Birdie blitz gives Fox podium place in Fiji

By Peter white A new course record set by Vijay Singh and a scintillating final round from Ryan Fox was not enough to stop Matt Kuchar winning the Fiji International at Natadola Bay yesterday.

With the wind dropping for the first time all week, the talented field took full toll of the benign conditions to finish the co-sanctioned OneAsia and PGA Tour of Australasia event in a blaze of red numbers.

Kuchar turned three under the card to end any hopes the others may have had of catching him down the straight.

Three-time major winner and course co-designer Singh broke David Smail’s course record of five-under 67 set last year.

Singh fired seven birdies in a vintage display to shoot 65 and finish third equal with Fox and Australian Nick Cullen.

Fox pushed Singh all the way before signing for a 67 to finish five shots behind Kuchar.

“It was definitely a lot more

pleasant out there today,” Fox said. “Obviously I played really, really well and got it going on the back nine with five birdies in six holes.

“I had a couple of unplayables today so it could have been one of those rounds.”

He and playing partner Brad Shilton were inspired by watching the All Blacks, co-coached by his father Grant, thrash France just before they teed off, he said.

“Just say Brad and I were fairly happy on the first tee.

“It was brilliant and was set up to be a pretty good day after that performance.”

Shilton had a fine tournament, birdying the last two holes in style for a 71 to move up to sixth equal and pocket a sizeable cheque.

Tauranga’s Josh Geary, who had temporary hold on the top spot after day one, finished tied for 15th place after his 36th round of golf in 40 days following his successful run on the China Tour.

“This was my sixth week on the road now,” Geary said.

“It is tough when you get to a course that just demands all of your mental strength and you are almost zapped in a way.”

Some punters happy The All Blacks’ dominance over France didn’t put most rugby fans at ease until the second half got under way, but for 308 supporters their minds were rested in the 11th minute once Brodie Retallick crossed the try line. The lucky 308 people had placed a bet for Retallick to score the first try of the quarter final, a bet that paid $31. Fewer than a hundred people out there were optimistic enough to bet New Zealand would win by more than 29 points against France.

The 65 people who did have that faith in the All Blacks took $6 for their bets. Julian Savea’s hat-trick rewarded 128 people who placed bets he would score two or more tries, paying $8.

Hong Kong based Zac Purton was called before stewards to explain his ride on Japanese stayer Fame Game in the Caulfield Cup. Racing Victoria stewards had concerns over Purton’s ride from the 800m mark of Saturday’s race and his alleged lack of vigour over the final 100m. Stewards, through an interpreter, questioned Fame Game’s trainer Yoshitada Munakata over his instructions to Purton. Munakata told stewards instructions given were from barrier one to get back, not to go too wide and to ride between horses. He told stewards he was happy with Purton’s ride after expecting the field to spread out.

Purton told stewards he was taking runs as they presented but was being buffeted by horses.

Tourneur to ride Adeal Adelaide jockey Dom Tourneur will ride lightweight Melbourne Cup hope Let’s Make Adeal. Trainer confident Lee Somervell’s confidence in his New Zealand Cup carnival prospects was given another major boost at Saturday’s Rotorua meeting. The Cambridge trainer produced the genuine five-year-old Celebrity Miss to convincingly win the Listed Jakkalberry Classic and emphasise her readiness for Christchurch.

“She’s a lovely mare and is coping with the rise in class,” Somervell said. “Her main mission is the New Zealand Cup. “She’s an on pace runner who can keep out of trouble and she’s still on the way up - this is a nice stepping stone to Riccarton.”

Conners eyes VCR Oaks Clarry Conners’ three VRC Oaks winners have been vastly more experienced than Dawnie Perfect but that hasn’t lessened the trainer’s enthusiasm for the filly. Dawnie Perfect went into Saturday’s Ethereal Stakes at Caulfield a maiden and came out of it a Group Three winner and the second favourite for the Oaks (2500m) on November 5.

In brief Big win for Trouper Flying sprinter Super Trouper booked herself a start in the Gr. 3 Lindauer Stewards Stakes on the middle day of New Zealand Cup Week at Riccarton next month with a devastating display to win the Ashburton Cup on Saturday.

The speedy five-year-old mare simply ran her rivals off their feet as she led practically from “go to whoa” in a tidy 1.10.45 for the 1200 metre journey of the EA Networks sponsored event. At the winning post the daughter of Darci Brahma had a comfortable three length margin over race favourite Soubrettes who chased gamely in the run home but never looked like catching the winner.

Strada Cavallo breaks duck Strada Cavallo crowned an outstanding day for trainer Graham Richardson when she triumphed in the Listed John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton on Saturday.

The Matamata horseman had earlier posted a winning double at the Rotorua meeting with Sultry Assassin and the unbeaten Snapshot.

“It’s been a great, great day and every horse I’ve started has gone well,” Richardson said.

Guineas at Riccarton when she broke her maiden at the expense of a competitive line-up at Ashburton.

“She’s still learning, but she’s always showed plenty of ability,” Richardson said.

The leading South Island jockey had Strada Cavallo in behind the leading pack before he angled wide and the Alamosa filly mowed down Princess Davone, Brighton and Windborne to win by half a head.

Richardson sent the threeyear-old down south in search of better ground, and he wasn’t disappointed in her previous third placing after making the running at Riccarton in the Guineas Trial.

“I thought it was a very good run,” he said.

“It wasn’t intentional, but we were in front and it wasn’t the place to be.

“It’s just the way it panned out and they went pretty quick with a head wind up the straight.

“I was sick and tired of the state of the tracks up here and

I wanted to give her the trip away and some time to acclimatise.

“She’s a serious horse.”

He is also understandably upbeat about the future prospects of Snapshot, who won his fourth consecutive race when he successfully resumed in the Lowe Schollum & Jones 1200.

Part-owned by All Black skipper Richie McCaw, Snapshot’s longer term goals may now include the Gr.1 JR & N Berkett Telegraph and the Gr.1 Harcourts Thorndon Mile.

Royally bred mare Mary Quant has provided trainers Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott with a happy dilemma as they set about planning her upcoming summer campaign. The daughter of super sire O’Reilly and multiple Group One winner Legs made her reappearance at the races a winning one at Rotorua on Saturday after having been off the scene since finishing well back in the Gr. 1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) back in March. The victory over 1200 metres in the NZB Insurance sponsored Pearl Series event was just what the doctor ordered although it did provide a few questions for her mentors as to where they should head over the next few months.

Emotional victory Ryan Mark did his best to lift the Morell family spirits when he claimed the feature event at Arawa Park on Saturday. The leading sprinter delivered an emotioncharged victory in the Gr.3 Lochinver Station WFA Plate for trainer John Morell, whose mother Floss had passed away on Friday night. “The horse has always had the quality and it’s nice to do it for John,” Ryan Mark’s regular rider Michael Coleman said. “We had to do it a bit tough out three wide and the speed was fast. He relaxed well though and he really dug in.”

The five-year-old finished well in the straight and hung on grimly to deny the late finish of Scapolo with Procurement giving a bold sight for third in her first appearance for six months.

College bowlers run hot

Following a rain delay of almost three hours on Saturday, Ashburton College’s 1st XI got under way at 1.40pm against Riccarton High School at the Domain.

When play finally ensued, College won the toss, elected to field and came out firing.

Sam Hall’s second delivery lifted sharply and deflected off the gloves of Riccarton opener Tim Bridgeman to be caught behind by wicketkeeper Zach Naldrett.

Fellow opening bowler Josh Buchanan was also quick out of the traps, getting one to cut back and strike Jessy Daly’s off stump.

Ben Bridgeman’s wicket was next to fall as he edged Hall’s delivery to Scott Punselie at first slip, who held his catch well.

Buchanan found off stump again to have the visitors four down before another over bowled and the Hall-Naldrett combination removed Lehman Taleni for a duck, leaving Riccarton nine wickets down for five runs.

The sixth wicket proved the most stubborn as James Rennie (27) top scored to move the score on to 48 before being dismissed by spinner Punselie.

Twelve runs later Punselie had another breakthrough, thanks to the sharp reactions of Josh Gill at slip, to remove Ethan Ng for five.

Punselie had found his rhythm, and promptly dismissed Max Connolly for a golden duck.

With a hat-trick on the cards, all the fielders came in but Josh Paul inside-edged it to fine leg for a single before Will Graham and Punselie mopped up the tail enders leaving Riccarton all out for 72.

Ashburton College’s openers, Michael Burton and Josh Gill batted solidly putting on 50 for the first wicket before the former was bowled trying to push up the run rate.

BY PATRICK MCKENDRY A penny for the thoughts of Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer as he watched this All Blacks’ quarter-final demolition job of France hours after his side desperately fought for their

victory over Wales in the other last-eight match of the day.

The two old rivals will meet at Twickenham in a semi-final next Sunday morning and on this stunning evidence the All Blacks will be hot favourites.
