Methven fight night organisers say the event will be safe despite concerns about charity boxing events in New Zealand following a fatality this month.

The Dubliner Fight Night II on December 8 will feature special guest and boxing star Shane Cameron.

Spokesperson Gary Manning said organisers remained excited about the event, which would follow all health and safety guidelines and regulations as set out by the New Zealand Professional Boxing Association.

This would include the compulsory wearing of protective headgear by com-

petitors, a regulation introduced just last month.

“I’m really impressed with the professionalism and commitment of all the contenders for December’s event.”

Among them is Simon Sharpin.

The 28-year-old real estate agent for Bayleys is from South Otago originally and has lived in Methven for 10 years.

He is a keen rugby player who has always had a fascinataiton with boxing, and can not wait to get in the ring.

He had no concerns about the safety of the event, with organisers meeting exceptionally high standards in ensuring competitors were fit and well trained.

Local contenders commenced train-

ing in September under the guidance of Manning and fellow coach Joe Keepa and the Celtic Boxing Club.

Sharpin had been doing three to five sessions per week, with a combination of sparring, bag work, pads and defensive work.

“I have never been so buggered in my life after some of these training sessions.

I am probably the fittest I have ever been,” he said.

Tickets have sold out for the fight night, which is to be held at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall Methven. It will feature an evening of live boxing with all proceeds going to the Methven Rugby Football Club.

Kindergarten one step closer

The foothills community has shown strong support for a kindergarten to be established in Mt Somers.

Knowing that there were a number of parents in the area who drove their children considerable distances to kindergarten sessions in either Ashburton or Methven, Ashburton Kindergarten Associa-

tion president Nadia McClelland wanted to find out whether there was a need for a kindergarten based in Mt Somers.

She called a meeting on Wednesday and said the enthusiasm of those attending was high.

“The meeting was really positive and there was lots of discussion; we got an absolute mandate to move ahead,” she said.

McClelland will now send sur-

vey forms to all rural box holders in the area as well as carrying out an on-line survey to determine the number of pre-schoolers in the area.

McClelland said whether the kindergarten is established comes down to numbers, with 30 children considered the optimum number.

“If we’ve got the numbers then we’ll take the next step towards

establishing it, but certainly from the meeting, people will be talking to others in their own communities and groups to spread the word,” McClelland said.

She has been in discussions with the Ministry of Education and they are supportive.

If the numbers are there, a feasibility study will be done and then the process of establishment with the ministry will begin.

McClelland anticipates that process could take all of next year and will also involve finding a suitable site to build on, or a suitable building.

“It’s a long road to getting this set up but we believe in the value of the quality education kindergarten provides.

“It’s a non-profit organisation so all the money goes on the children and the centre,” she said.

Opening a window into the world of bees

Methven farmer Andrew Currie will open a window into the fascinating world of bees when he runs the Methven Summer School’s beekeeping course in January.

Currie has bees on his farm to pollinate crops and says they are vital to not only farmers, but anyone growing and consuming food.

He shares his unique experience observing and working with bees on the one-day summer school course.

“It is a really interesting subject to learn about. You have three types of bees, the queens, the workers and the drones, who are the lazy sods that get kicked out in autumn.”

The course takes interested people through the different role each bee has in the hive and how bees pollinate crops and produce honey as a byproduct.

He said some students wanted an up-close and personal experience with bees while others had to conquer their fear to learn about bees and their importance to the planet.

“The bees are struggling internationally and the more people understand how much care they require, the better.

“It is not easy. You don’t buy a hive and leave it in your garden. There are diseases and pests like varroa

and American foulbrood you have to keep an eye out for.”

Currie said the whole bee industry needed people to be vigilant about diseases that affected bees and hives.

He said the aim of the day was to share information about bees, not equip people with the skills to run their own hives.

However, in the two years he has been taking the course, four people have been inspired to get their own hives.

People on the course need to buy or source a beekeeping suit, including veil and gloves. They spend a good part of the day learning about how the hive functions, what the queen’s role in reproduction is and other bees’ social and work functions.

“We spend time running through some paperwork so they generally understand how a hive works.

Then we build a hive from scratch.

Some people have never touched a bee or held a frame of bees in their hands.”

There are still a few places left in January’s course, with nine other courses full and several almost full.

Methven Summer School courses will run from January 5-10 next year and also include public speaking, artisan bread making, needlework, cheese-making and more.

The long road of a rural mailman

Over the past 29 years, Craig Meyrick reckons he’s driven more than two million kilometres on a handful of roads in just one corner of the Ashburton District.

Shingle roads, sealed roads, roads that could barely be called a road, he’s travelled every one of those that make up the RD6 rural delivery run. And those roads haven’t changed much in 29 years. There’s still shingle, dust, some seal and today there’s the addition of a few cow pats.

But Craig and the Methven–Lauriston roading network have parted company.

He’s sold his business, said goodbye to 4am starts, six days of the week. He’s now looking forward to a lie in, a chance to play more golf and simply taking a break.

“Selling has been in the back of my mind for a couple of years now but I’ve never really got sick of the job, just sick of the 4am starts,” he said.

He spends two hours each morning sorting mail and parcels before he hits the road and all going well his 10-hour day wraps up around 2pm. He won’t miss that 60-hour week, he said.

He’s a second generation rural postie, taking over from his dad Ian. He was working as a builder in Christchurch when his dad phoned and said he was retiring.

“He said – do you want it? I had no hesitation in saying yes,” Craig said.

In 29 years there had been huge changes in the job but in some ways it has changed very little, he said.

“It’s gone from predominately letters to predominately the parcel market, and we

PHOTO SUE NEWMAN 141118-SN-0018 deliver a lot more flyers, circulars and papers now. But what hasn’t changed is that we’re still the one person who comes to their place every day. You get to know every person on your run, every mailbox. We’re the one constant in their day.”

In the old days, deliveries also included

staples such as bread and milk.

“Our point of difference is we deliver everything – anything that’ll go in the van – to the farm gate in one pass, I think that’s why we are darned hard to replace.”

Years on the job means it all became second nature.

“Everything is in run order when I leave town so when I put my hand out at the next box, it’s all there.”

As the district has changed and more farms have converted to dairying, business has increased for rural mailmen, Craig said.

“We used to go to one farm and there’d be one house and one mailbox, now with one farm there could be five boxes. In my experience dairy farmers in Mid Canterbury are very good for the district, some farms have changed from mediocre to very good farms.”

Perhaps surprisingly, he’s never tired of driving the same roads day after day, year after year.

“You become best friends with the radio station and I’ve gone through phases where I listened to stories on a CD. Now it’s podcasts.”

On his 230 kilometre daily trip, Craig is one of eight rural posties driving the district and he’s one of eight rural mailmen whose holidays are dictated by when they can find a relief driver.

“Over the years I’ve employed about five relief drivers. The last two have ended up buying mail runs.

“It’s always hard to find good relievers, but I’ve been lucky.”

You can plan holidays, but you can’t plan sick days. Craig recalls not being able to complete his run only once.

He was forced to come home part way through and his dad had to take over.

While he won’t miss the early starts, Craig said he will miss the regular contact with rural folk, many of whom have become good friends.

Biodegradable bin liners far better than plastic - Goodwin

There’s plenty to celebrate with the disappearance of plastic bags from supermarket checkouts, says Ashburton’s waste recovery manager Craig Goodwin.

While plastic bags can remain in landfill for hundreds of years, the slew of bags now marketed as eco or biodegradable will, over

varying periods of time, break down, Goodwin said.

The district’s wheelie bins do not need to be lined, but many people choose to line kitchen tidy bins and would be looking for alternatives to supermarket bags to do the job, he said.

It was impossible to recommend one product over another in terms of the speed with which

it would break down, for some it could be 12 months, for others two or three years, but the critical thing was that all would eventually disappear, Goodwin said.

He urged people to read the information printed on bags marketing themselves as biodegradable to ensure they were buying a product that did what it claimed.

Bags that did not break down quickly were creating problems in areas where there were composting facilities as the systems used in New Zealand could not deal with them, he said.

Ashburton does not have a composting facility.

“There’s a lot of greenwashing going on, manufacturers saying they break down but those

products are designed for the large European market with large scale hot-rot composting schemes. We import them but we don’t have the same scale composting plants.”

If people wanted to line bins, any of the bags marketed as biodegradable were still a far better option than plastic, Goodwin said.

DOC urges better control of dogs The Department of Conservation (DOC) is adopting new tactics to protect wildlife by encouraging dog owners to better control their dogs on beaches and coastlines.

To do this they’ve introduced an online quiz that dog owners can complete to be wildlife certified.

Once they complete the quiz a dog owner will receive an link to purchase one of the four Lead the Way leads in a collaboration with

Traffic Light Bandanas.

The colour of the lead highlights their dog’s behaviour. Using the lead lets other dog walkers know whether the pup is friendly (green), cautious (orange) or would prefer to keep to themselves (red). There is even an option for blind or deaf dogs (yellow).

Dog owners are encouraged to share the beach and ensure they

keep space between dogs and wildlife.

Several endangered species, including rapoka (NZ sea lion), kekeno (NZ fur seal), korora (little penguin) and hoiho (yellow-eyed penguin) are at risk from dog attacks.

Lead the Way is an initiative which aims to promote responsible dog ownership and reduce negative dog interactions with

coastal wildlife. “As populations start to recover, these endangered species are showing up unexpectedly on beaches more often, even around coastal cities like Dunedin and Wellington,” said community ranger Jesikah Triscott.

“There’s a huge amount of wildlife around coastlines and harbours which largely goes unseen, but their unique smell attracts curious dogs.

“This is a threat to species that is within our control. We want dog owners to know that it’s possible to share the beach, but it’s important that dogs are either on a lead or trained to be called back quickly,” she said.

There are two-way benefits from the dog behaviour guidelines as interactions with kekeno and rapoka can also be dangerous for dogs.

Trott’s Gardens opens gates to the community

An event that could well become one of Ashburton’s mustattend occasions will see Trott’s Gardens open its gates to the community.

Last year Alan and Catherine Trott sold their internationally recognised gardens to the community through the Trott’s Gardens Charitable Trust and since then the gardens have flourished in the hands of dozens of volunteers.

On November 25 the trust is opening the gardens to the public in an event that will ensure anyone who wants to enjoy the world-recognised property can do so without paying a cent.

Trust management committee member David Montgomery said the open day was a way of thanking the community for its support over the year.

“People can just come in, wander around the gardens, perhaps bring a picnic lunch. We just want everyone to enjoy this place,” Montgomery said.

While the gardens would be the focus of the community day, there would be plenty of other entertainment with music, food stalls and cake tasting.

The gardens are managed by the trust with a manager and a team of more than 60 volunteers who carry out a range of work to ensure the property remains in pristine order, he said.

Since the trust bought the gardens in September, the chapel has been renovated and a permanent marquee has been installed in the grounds. This will be dressed for the day.

The gardens have a golf cart and mobility scooter to ensure they are fully accessible.

The trust was delighted by the way the community had put its support behind the project, Montgomery said, and the open day was a way of saying thank you.

The gardens were developed over more than 30 years from bare paddocks.

Trott’s Gardens’ open day on Racecourse Road will be held on November 25, from 11am to 3pm. Entry is free.

PTSI event – ‘you will not walk alone’

For many soldiers returning from World War One, making it back home often meant a very long trek on foot or horseback.

And to mark that post-war journey a group of charity-minded Kiwis will walk and ride 10 horses across the Canterbury high country in January. Not only will they be commemorating the end of World War One, they will also be raising money for war veterans.

The trek is called The Long Road Home and will start at St Arnaud on January 5. It will follow a 110km route across the high country to Hanmer Springs, the route taken by soldiers returning from the Great War 100 years ago.

A parade will be held in Blenheim before the high country march begins, and a second parade will be held in Hanmer Springs to mark the end of the march on January 11.

Organiser Mark Appleton, a member of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Charitable Trust (NZMRT), said the group is raising funds for people suffering post-traumatic stress injury or PTSI. It recognises the fact that soldiers returning from World War One were often left to make their

own way home after disembarking from the troop ships, docking in ports such as Wellington.

“Many felt abandoned, hopeless and segregated from their fellow Kiwis after witnessing the horrors of war. Sometimes they were left without steady jobs and in the 1920s, the suicide rate for veterans spiked,” Appleton said.

More than 30 members of the trust, ex-service people and event supporters will take part and will dress in a similar style to those soldiers demobbed 100 years ago.

The trust is looking at creating an annual PTSI awareness event.

Interest for an annual walk has already been shown in Australia and the United States.

So far more than $1800 has been raised for The Long Road Home cause through a givealittle page.

PTSI continues to impact on the lives of soldiers that have served in arenas including Korea, Malaya, Vietnam and Afghanistan.

The project was launched at Ryman Healthcare’s Charles Upham Retirement Village on Wednesday and village residents had tears in their eyes when they heard of the pressures young veterans faced when returning from theatres of war, like Afghanistan, Appleton said.

“PTSI can also have an impact on some in the military who don’t serve in a war zone and the families of those affected. It’s a normal reaction to abnormal circumstances. It’s really prevalent in the military at the moment; for all these young fellows from Afghanistan.”

Returning servicemen and women struggled making that transition from the military and danger and coming back into this beautiful civilian life that we have, he said.

The event sends a message to PTSI sufferers that “you will not walk alone” and has the support of the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association (RSA), with sponsorship from Ryman Healthcare, he said.

The trust is also talking to Veterans’ Affairs New Zealand and the New Zealand Defence Force.

CBD invaded by scouts The Ashburton CBD was recently invaded by local scouts as part of their annual cub challenge.

The youngster were tasked with going around businesses, looking for Akela the wolf, who was hiding in shop windows throughout the town, with the Allenton cub pack taking out the shield this year.

As well as locating the wolf, the scouts also had tasks such as taking photos of specific locations.

Micro-tornado hits

In brief Board meeting The QEII National Trust is holding its November board meeting in Methven today. The trust is charged with protecting special land and works with landowners on natural and cultural heritage sites; there are over 4400 protected areas through New Zealand from small backyard patches to huge swathes of high country. One of the six trust board directors is Mid Canterbury’s Donna Field, who farms Cleardale Station in the Rakaia Gorge with husband Ben Todhunter. Woman missing A young woman is missing from the Wellington suburb of Khandallah. Sonam Shelar was last seen at 8.30am on Saturday on Cashmere Avenue. She is 26 years old, of slender build and approximately 165cm tall. She was wearing a brown jacket with fur on the hood and white, black and orange trainers. An irrigator was tipped over after a micro-tornado ripped through Randal Hanrahan’s Ashburton farm.

Car rolls off highway A micro-tornado tipped up two irrigators and moved a mower as it blasted across an Ashburton farm yesterday afternoon.

Farmer Randal Hanrahan was working outside about 4pm and filmed the dust devil as it formed about 100 metres from him.

“I saw it go across the yard and it skirted the side of the house. It tipped up two irrigators and lifted a mower which was trailing a tractor. The power of it was phenomenal.”

He said the dust devil was about 100m wide, picked up loose objects and flung them far away.

Five spans of one irrigator had been upended by the wind storm and the span of another had been bent in half.

The dust devil moved north on to a neighbouring farm before breaking up. Both properties are on the western side of State Highway 1, about 5 minutes north of

Ashburton town.

Dust devils are swirling microtornadoes in specific weather circumstances. As the ground heats up, the rising air can create a vortex that picks up loose soil and whirls it into the air.

The dust devil, rain and hail yesterday signalled the arrival of a complex weather system forecast to move over the country over the next few days, bringing an extended period of wet and cold weather.

“Most people can expect to see some rain over the next few days,” said MetService meteorologist Tui McInnes, “however, snow is surprisingly the main focus of this event.”

McInnes said snow was uncommon this late in the year.

Snow levels are set to lower significantly for the South Island, with a dusting even possible for Central Plateau.

A micro-tornado blasted across an Ashburton farm yesterday afternoon.

“Cold temperatures associated with this weather system means we could see snow to 400m in Southland and 500m in Otago and Canterbury and there are a handful of severe weather

warnings and watches in place, so this is certainly an event to stay up to date with.”

MetService said the unstable air created prime conditions for hail showers.

A person has been seriously injured after their car rolled off State Highway 12 in Northland landing upside down in a stand of mangroves. A Fire and Emergency spokesman said a call came in about 10.14am that a car had left SH12 near Rawene Road in Rawene, and plunged into the mangroves. The person was initially trapped and had to be cut free from the wreckage by fire crews. A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said the person suffered serious injuries and was flown to hospital.

Trump surveys damage US President Donald Trump has toured areas scorched by wildfires in northern California, as officials struggled to account for 1000 people still reported as missing.

“Nobody would have ever thought this would have happened,” Trump said while standing in front of burned out structures in Paradise, a community that was razed by the flames.

“This is very sad to see it. As far as the lives are concerned, nobody knows quite yet. We’re up to a certain number but we have a lot of people who aren’t accounted for,” he said.

The confirmed death toll for wildfires across the state stood at 74.

The president surveyed damage caused the Camp Fire, which broke out more than a week ago north of the state capital Sacramento, killing at least 71 people.

Police said at the weekend the number of people unaccounted for had jumped from 631 to 1011 people, but cautioned that the new count represented a provisional figure and might contain duplicates.

In the Woolsey Fire near Los Angeles,

three people have been confirmed dead, according to Cal Fire authorities.

After Air Force One landed at a military base in haze-filled California, Trump boarded a Marine One helicopter and flew over the area before landing at Chico Municipal Airport, in fire-hit Butte County.

From there his motorcade made a 30-minute drive to Paradise, where he saw first-hand the ash and charred rubble of a neighbourhood.

He was joined by California Governor Jerry Brown, Governor-Elect Gavin Newsom and Brock Long, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), amongst others.

Trump had drawn criticism for earlier comments he made on Twitter about the fires, blaming poor forest management for the “massive, deadly and costly forest fires” and threatening to withhold funding if the “gross mismanagement” was not remedied.

But while standing in among the ruins of the Camp Fire, Trump said everyone was “on the same path”.

“What needs to be done is being done,” Brown said. Trump then met with officials at a fire command centre in Chico, where he described what he had seen as “total devastation.”

The president, who has long expressed doubts about human-caused climate change, was asked by a reporter whether his views had changed in light of the fires.

“No, no,” he said.

The Camp and Woolsey fires have destroyed more than 100,000 hectares of land and more than 10,000 residences and buildings, according to Cal Fire authorities. As of yesterday, the Camp Fire was only 55 per cent contained.

Meanwhile, San Francisco and other nearby towns and cities were shrouded in thick smoke. San Francisco authorities called the air “very unhealthy” and told people to remain indoors.

The Camp Fire has become California’s deadliest and most destructive, more than doubling the death toll of the 1933 Griffith Park blaze in Los Angeles County that killed 29.

Connolly focuses on art Billy Connolly says his “art is his life now” as he unveiled a new exhibition of his work in Glasgow. Born On A Rainy Day is the latest instalment in his collection and includes 25 new sketches. In 2013, the Scottish comedian revealed he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and prostate cancer on the same day but has since been given the all clear for cancer.

He told BBC Scotland: “I get up in the morning and feed the fish. I catch them in the afternoon, and then I draw and I have this idyllic life. I don’t miss touring for a minute. I’ve had my fill of it, I’ve done the big and I’ve done the wee and been there and I’ve done it - I’m very proud of that.”

Argentinian submarine found one year later A missing Argentinian Navy submarine has been found a year and a day after it went missing.

The ARA San Juan was found at an unspecified location in the Atlantic Ocean at a depth of 800 metres, the Argentine Navy said in a statement retweeted by the country’s defence ministry.

“Positive identification has been given to ARA San Juan,” the tweet stated.

A massive international search was launched after the submarine disappeared on November 15 last year but hopes of finding the crew of 44 alive were given up two weeks later and the search was scaled down.

On Friday, North American survey

firm Ocean Infinity was just 48 hours away from giving up its search when it found an unknown object on the ocean floor.

Closer inspection using a remote submarine revealed it to be the missing vessel.

Argentina’s government bowed to pressure from the families of the missing crew in January by offering $US4.8 million ($NZ6.5 million) for information leading to the submarine’s recovery.

Days earlier, a judge investigating the disappearance said the submarine, which was built in the German seaport of Emden in 1983 before completing an update in Argentina in 2013, had “many flaws”.

Marilyn Monroe’s Golden Globe Award has sold for a record-breaking $US250,000 ($NZ350,010) at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, California.

The 1961 award statue for World Film Favourite Female from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association made history as the highest selling Golden Globe sold at auction. Monroe’s raven black twoseater, 1956 Ford Thunderbird, which was auctioned for the first time, fetched $US490,000 at Icons & Idols: Hollywood.

Babies will be the stars in Up and Away

It will be a first for the Ashburton Trust Event Centre when Up and Away stages next week.

The show is exclusively for babies who are not yet at the age of walking. Performances

are limited to 10 babies, who can bring along just one grown-up each.

Up and Away takes place in a carefully crafted tent, where babies engage through live music and theatrical play.

There will be three shows scheduled, for 10am, 11am and 1pm.

Shows are presented by Cubbin Theatre Company and have been sell-outs in Christchurch and Lincoln.

Values explored in exhibition Island is an idea that has many associations, says Dunedin School of Art principal lecturer Clive Humphreys.

His drawings, and charcoal and watercolour creations are the subject of The Process of Place, an exhibition which he opened with a talk at the Ashburton Art Gallery on Sunday.

“Seen from the sea, the island announces itself as a monument of stillness,” Humphreys says of his work.

“This implies its relative longevity and liminality . . . of a pre-industrial landscape, separated from the mainstream, subject to the movements of phenomena like weather and erosion, but with all the characteristics of slow process.”

However the forest within the island has other, quite contemporary, symbolic values.

“Because we now understand that it plays a crucial role in absorbing our carbon dioxide emissions and cleaning our drinking water, and so it provides us with vital functions that have been undervalued in the modernist era.”

In recent years Humphreys has drawn specific sites on Waiheke Island, in an attempt to re-engage with outside and the idea of the “landscape” picture.

Much of this exploration has focused on native forest remnants.

Show your support for Toot for Tucker B

ravo the good women of the Ashburton County Lions Club and their annual Toot for Tucker food drive. Bravo too, the ordinary people of Mid Canterbury who support them.

The food drive is on tonight – you’ll hear car horns tooting long and loud when they’re on your street and you can take out your donations for collection.

If you’re not going to be home this evening, just fill a plastic bag and leave it on your letterbox in clear view.

The Lions club started Toot for Tucker in 2000 and it has grown beyond all expectations; last year enough items were collected to fill more than 430 banana boxes.

The food is distributed to families in need through the Salvation

Army, St Vincent de Paul and Presbyterian Support.

It’s sad to know there are people in our community in desperate need of such support but Ashburton is no different to any other town or city in New Zealand.

Families struggle for all sorts of reasons, but it is the children who lose the most – whether it is an empty lunchbox or having no adult at home at tea time.

Ordinary Ashburton people, bless their socks, have supported Toot for Tucker for nearly 20 years and tonight will be no different.

Those of a certain age will have grown up in a frugal era, where vegetables were grown at home, leftovers were re-energised into a new dish the following night and families ate together at night.

That generation gave way to one slightly less thrifty and as time rolled on each successive generation wanted to have more than the previous.

Young people now need to lower their expectations if they want to keep debt levels down – buy second hand furniture, don’t renovate, drive an older car.

Budgeting and living within your means is a skill handed

Another family dynamic in the spotlight this month is family violence.

The White Ribbon Riders roared into town last night and will deliver important messages about healthy relationships to children at Allenton and Netherby School.

Family harm is a big issue in this country and those working at the coalface say it’s time ordinary people stopped sitting on the sidelines and called others out about their poor behaviour.

Family harm encompasses all sorts of violence, but the White Ribbon campaign is focused on

men’s violence towards women – physical, psychological and emotional.

The stats show one in three women will be the victim of some sort of abuse by their partner so there’s a good chance that a workmate, a team-mate or another school mum may be in that sort of unhealthy relationship.

Don’t be afraid to ask why they look so sad.

White Ribbon activities in Ashburton this month include a family fun day at the Ashburton Domain on November 24 and a quiz night at the Hotel Ashburton on November 30.

Men, stand up and take the pledge to listen, reflect, alter your behaviour, talk to others and disrupt negative behaviour.

Speaking out against violence A

couple of months ago, as New Zealand was celebrating 125 years since women gained the right to vote, I wrote in these pages of the work we still have to do.

Acknowledging that, although we remain a world leader, in many areas we are failing a large chunk of our population.

The most pressing issue I cited was family violence.

I noted that every year police respond to more than 100,000 family violence call-outs.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It’s estimated that 80 per cent of family violence incidents aren’t even reported to police.

Since I wrote that column I’ve had a few people contact me suggesting those numbers simply cannot be accurate.

Unfortunately they’re all too real, and that’s not where it ends.

When I first became a Member of Parliament in September last year I sat on the Justice Select Committee.

It deals with a myriad of issues relating to police, courts, corrections and the wider justice system, and yes, family violence.

Within days of the election we were considering two pieces of legislation that brought us up close with many victims of violence, most with stories too harrowing to print.

In many cases, for the victims it was the first time they’d ever spoken of their experiences. For others, the first time since formal police interviews.

Many broke down. So too, did some of the MPs. Stories of serious sexual and violent offending, of kidnapping, of forced marriage.

Almost without exception, it wasn’t just a male and a female.

It was a mum and a dad, a family with children.

It’s the thing that’s haunted me since those hearings. That in those households where this violence is occurring, children

are growing up. The brutality is abhorrent. It cannot be justified, explained or ignored. But what troubles me most is the children for whom this becomes normalised behaviour.

The effect on our young men who think using their fists is acceptable, that psychological and physical abuse is ok.

And worse, the impact on our young women who think that’s what love looks like. Who far too often grow up and seek out the same destructive and abusive relationships that their mothers were in.

Granted, not all children grow up this way. A great many take the other road, treating partners with love and kindness in the way their parents never did. Similarly not all perpetrators of family violence are men. But the vast bulk are.

Each year nearly 90 per cent of protection order applicants are female, and 90 per cent of respondents are male.

I made two decisions as I sat hearing those submissions, one small, one more significant.

The first, to permanently wear a white ribbon on my lapel, the

symbol of the fight against family harm and violence.

For many it may seem like an insignificant thing to do, but as a male sitting on a male dominated select committee, if there’s anything I could do to give one of those victims even the slightest bit of comfort, I would.

The second has been to get involved in the White Ribbon Trust, the group behind many initiatives to combat family harm.

As your local Member of Parliament I’ve been able to speak to a range of audiences, including our young men and women, about the importance of speaking out against violence.

It’s something we’ll all need to do for many years to break the cycle of abuse. To start, you can come by the White Ribbon Family Fun Day by the domain paddling pool, this Saturday at 10am.

together, something nowadays we find very scarce. This, perhaps, for them, was life!

How does one account life?

Measure it? Define it? Put a meaning to it perhaps?

A king named Solomon is said to be the wisest man who ever lived. He wrote the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible based on the wisdom and life of his own experiences and what he had achieved in his lifetime.

It would seem King Solomon was pursuing answers to similar questions. King Solomon had everything and anything that life had to offer, the desires of his heart both that which pleased God and that which did not please God. He was seeking meaning and the purpose of his existence. What it all means and why! For what purpose? He came to the conclusion that it was useless. Things he achieved in life brought him a moment of joy and meaning perhaps, and then it passed like the wind that comes and goes.

Today, living in the 21st Century, compared to the early centuries, shows a vast difference of what life is. Global knowledge in our pockets, at the tip of our fingers and the many influences that it holds

that is; politics, science, economy, religion, education, etc that shape the way we think and live.

So, how does one measure or define life? Or its purpose?

One might argue that one can measure life by the good or bad deeds we do, others could argue by our successes or failures.

We may assume that there are no easy answers and therefore each has their own interpretation of what accounts as life or the meaning of life.

Timothy, a writer in the gospels, accounts life as one we have in God. To work hard to keep the faith for this is the life God called us to. To profess, confess, pray, forgive, love, share, comfort and help. These measures are a sure foundation to a true life.

Even a wise king like Solomon, with all his God-given wisdom, and riches beyond riches, found it futile to have a meaningful life without God. James, another writer says, “What is your life? It is like a mist here today and gone tomorrow”.

(James 4:14) James is reminding us that our life on Earth is limited.

What will we do with the short time God has given us? What legacy would we want to leave for our descendants? What would we want them to remember us by?

I personally pray that the legacy I leave behind is that my descendants will remember their grandmother or great grandmother as

Without God, life is futile ot long ago I took a service that included a family reunion, a reunion celebrating their history, journey that began in Staveley.

They were recalling their genealogy and retracing a legacy for others to be inspired and encouraged. It was interesting to hear the colourful stories shared about life in the early 18th Century that gave some food for thought about life back then.

And speaking of the life then, we can only imagine. If only we could ask what life was like I am sure we would be pleasantly surprised that not even written history could fully account or summarise life in the 18th Century. Imagine if our ancestors could ask how life is now in the 21st Century!

The 18th Century period of some of our ancestor’s time was a period of Christendom that was where western culture and society was shaped by Christian understanding. And where the church had a significant pull and influence on family life.

Just about everything revolved around God and Christianity. Like many of our ancestors of that period, that was life! Nearly everyone went to church, rallied together to build churches, communities, to form community groups and organisations, to celebrate events and festive seasons.

It wasn’t just family but communities. They did things regularly

a woman who sowed the seeds of a personal relationship with our Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ. That they would seek, trust, and love God in their lifetime because without God, as King Solomon puts it, life is futile.

God in his grace and mercy and his steadfast unwavering love for us, gave his son Jesus to the world so that the world would receive him and have life, life in all its fullness.

■ Sift icing sugar and cream of tartar into a large bowl. Stir in coconut. Add condensed milk, essence and food colouring. Stir to combine.

■ Line a large baking tray with baking paper.

Bend one end to make a candy cane shape. Place on prepared tray.

■ Chill canes for 30 minutes till set.

Good fun on reflection W

hen a friend suggested we bike ride from Vienna, in Austria, to Bratislava, in Slovakia, I thought it sounded a grand idea. It seemed like an ideal way to spend a Saturday — riding along the picturesque Danube, taking in the countryside, picnicking along the way — what could possibly go wrong?

We planned to ride the estimated five hours at a leisurely pace, arriving in the afternoon in Bratislava, in time for some sightseeing and dinner, before taking the train back to Vienna.

Right there, I should have spotted a couple of flaws in our itinerary. To begin with, I hadn’t ridden a bike for that long since . . . well, ever. Nevertheless I was up for an adventure and when half a dozen of us gathered at the bike hire place in the morning we were in high spirits.

An hour later, my spirit, and my legs, were beginning to quaver – this was going to be tougher than I thought. It had nothing to do with the terrain – the path was smooth and level, which meant the fault was solely with my endurance.

At the two-hour mark, we veered closer to the river and promptly hit a dead-end – we had chosen the wrong fork in the road, 20 minutes back. According to a friendly fisherman (whom we questioned in broken German), there was nothing to be done but return and take the high road.

No harm done, just a slight detour, and we considered ourselves lucky that we hadn’t gone too far on the wrong path.

Another hour of cycling and we spotted a couple sunbathing along the river, which seemed innocuous enough, but there was something not quite right about the whole picture.

Then we realised that they were sunbathing nude. Attributing it to a more liberal part of the world, we shrugged and rode on.

Then we saw a group of people picnicking in the buff. Liberal, indeed. It finally dawned on us

Be aware of the pitfalls of a cycling holiday before you set and most importantly do some training in advance. this was a nudist zone.

Abashed, we sped up, not knowing where to look as we zoomed past groups chatting, barbecuing, and even dining at a cafe in the nude.

Comic relief aside, we continued on the ride through the Danube-Auen National Park, admiring the Monet-esque lily ponds and sprawling green fields along the river.

We stopped for a delicious lunch in the shade — taking advantage of the region’s fine

cheeses and artisan breads we had packed earlier.

The summer sun was starting to fatigue me and we realised we hadn’t brought enough water – there aren’t many places to refill along the way.

So a couple of the more enthusiastic members of our party back-tracked to a side road with a small shop, replenishing us for the rest of the journey.

When we crossed the Danube into Slovakia we were enchanted with the lush vineyards and

shaded lanes, but I was wearing out — our five hours had turned into seven and when we finally arrived in Bratislava I was hardly in the mood to tour the charming city.

Thankfully we stumbled across a cheap local restaurant and dined on a feast of meaty goulash and potatoes, washed down with strong Slovak beer.

We were having so much fun we lost track of time, and when we did wheel our bikes into the train station we discovered

we had missed the last train to Vienna by five minutes.

Someone had the bright idea of staying up the rest of the night and catching the first train back at 5am — a suggestion that only seems wise after making the most of the price of drinks in Bratislava.

So, bleary-eyed and worse for wear, we finally boarded the dawn train home, with a great adventure behind us – albeit one for which I probably should have trained.

In brief Federer defends Zverev Roger Federer has sprung to Alexander Zverev’s defence after some of the Swiss great’s diehard fans booed the young German after his superb victory in the last four of the ATP Finals. Zverev, 21, won fair and square 7-5 7-6 (7-5) to claim a third victory in six meetings with Federer, but the semi-final ended in uproar after a controversial second set tiebreak. Federer was leading 4-3 when Zverev stopped mid-rally after a ball slipped from a ball boy’s hand and into his line of vision. When the point was replayed, Zverev served an ace.

A few points later Zverev finished off the 37-year-old with a nerveless volley, but his on-court interview was drowned out by a cacophony of boos and heckling.

Ogier claims sixth crown

By Murray Wenzel Sebastien Ogier has won a sixth straight World Rally Championship as a torrid final day of Rally Australia prematurely ended the hopes of his two possible challengers.

The Frenchman started a wet day three needing to hold his spot ahead of Thierry Neuville, while overnight rally leader Ott Tanak also remained a chance of jumping him if disaster struck for the Ford driver.

Instead it was that pair that failed to finish, with Neuville clipping a tree with three stages remaining and Tanak running off the road on the penultimate stage.

Neither were able to recover, with the dual retirements assuring Ogier another title regardless of how he fared on the season’s final passage.

But the 34-year-old sealed the crown in fashion, blitzing the

7km route to claim his only forest stage victory of the rally and the five bonus points that came with it.

Toyota’s Jari-Matti Latvala claimed Rally Australia honours, beating New Zealand’s Hyundai driver Hayden Paddon by 32.5 seconds and securing his team their first manufacturers’ title since 1999.

The title-contending pair’s misfortune capped a rally that wasn’t short on drama as stray tractors, rogue spectators and a final-day downpour combined to push drivers to the limits on the 13th and final leg of the series.

But as rivals fell around him the Frenchman held firm to edge closer to countryman and namesake Sebastien Loeb’s nine consecutive crowns.

His streak looked in serious jeopardy after Neuville had built a 27-point series lead with a win in June’s Rally Italia Sardegna.

But Ogier chipped away in the

India coach Ravi Shastri has warned a battling Australia that his side will be taking no prisoners this summer. ‘Dumb penalties’ cost ABs

Ireland’s mastermind By liam NaPier Proud yet understated, Joe Schmidt was in no mood to gloat after masterminding another famous win over the All Blacks.

Rather, he instead pulled out his best defensive fend to downplay the World Cup favourites tag swiftly bestowed on Ireland.

Having beaten the All Blacks twice in their last three encounters, Ireland’s stocks are rapidly rising.

So, too, is Schmidt’s ticket as his men, Six Nations champions, continue to firm as a serious threat for the Webb Ellis crown in Japan next year.

Not that Schmidt was having a bar of such suggestions, which naturally come after knocking over the world’s best.

“The World Cup in 11 months’ time?

“People will postulate about who is where and who is favourite.

“It’s a nebulous thing for us because all we can tangibly control is our preparation and then go out searching for a performance,” Schmidt said after the 16-9 victory, Ireland’s first at home over the All Blacks.

“For us to be favourites when they’ve been the world No 1 for nine years and continue to be the world No 1 team… look, we were at home.

“They were on the back of a long series of games where they’ve travelled around the world a number of times.

“I thought the crowd was phenomenal tonight.

“That’s a lot of things stacked in our favour. We’ll take tonight and leave 11 months for 11 months’ time.”

Schmidt was quick to deflect praise and laud others; notably the team around him including defence coach Andy Farrell, whose defensive system has now held the All Blacks tryless twice, and controlling playmaker Johnny Sexton.

But it should be clear to all that the lineout set move which created the only try, finished by Jacob Stockdale, of the absorbing test in Dublin was another example of Schmidt’s creativity.

“I mostly steal them from other people,” Schmidt said.

“I’m always on the lookout.

“I watch the Mitre 10 Cup and they’ve always got a couple of good ones.

“I showed a Highlanders play to the coaches recently and said ‘we could maybe do this’.

“It’s hard to get patience on moves.

“We felt we could go back down that short side.

“Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t but it is nice when you do put them to-

“The other coaching staff comes up with some.

“I come up with some incredibly poor moves in my time.

“They looked really good on paper though.”

Schmidt’s humble addresses continued as he pinpointed instances where Ireland’s scrambling defence somehow stopped the All Blacks from scoring.

“The way it was built up as one v two, it was a heavyweight contest.

“It was an incredibly collected hard-earned win.”

As for any conflicting thoughts as a New Zealander defeating his countrymen once again, not on this occasion.

“I’m 100 per cent an All Blacks supporter when they’re playing anyone but us just because that’s where the roots were.

“But I work with a committed bunch of men who go out and earn what they get so there’s no real mixed emotion about that because they’re the people I’m close to and they’re the people I see working so hard to achieve what they do.

“It does make it a little bit more complicated in this game, particularly for me, but I’m incredibly proud of the group of Irish players who did what they did tonight.”

The All Blacks are going to awake this morning with the cold, sobering realisation that they failed in Dublin to be the team they wanted to be and the players they aspire to be.

Then a second wave of hurt is going to land when they have to take on board that Ireland, as things stand, are a better team.

More disciplined, more certain about what they are trying to do and the biggest kicker of all – better under pressure.

That’s the bit that’s going to hurt the most – that Ireland were mentally stronger. Ireland were more accurate and more composed and not just by a little bit.

By quite a lot.

The All Blacks didn’t have a talismanic leader to steer them through. They didn’t have a player to lead the way by glorious example the way they so often do.

Their big players stood up but not in the holistic way that was required.

They were all eager, hungry and willing to make something happen.

They didn’t hide or shirk, but none came up with the killer moment and if there was something particularly odd about this test, it was the strangely out of sorts performance from Brodie Retallick.

The big man worked miracles last week in London, but in Dublin he was driven back when he carried and finished the test by dropping a pass that ended a move that must have had the Irish fearing they were watching a remake of 2013.

There was no lack of effort or desire on the part of the All Blacks, but endeavour, however honest, can’t be made to count if it is buddied up with a touch if headlessness.

And that’s a fair term for how things were in the second half.

The All Blacks gave themselves several chances to score tries – yet none came.

They didn’t have the level heads they needed to stay calm and trust that the score would come in the next phase and instead both Rieko Ioane and Beauden Barrett made high risk passes that were never on which cost them almost certain tries.

“I’d like to congratulate Ireland,” said All Blacks coach Steve Hansen.

“They played outstandingly well and they took their opportunity and we didn’t take ours.

“I thought our discipline let us down a wee bit in the first half.

The effort was world class but the execution was not what we would have liked and we were just beaten by a better team.

“Out and out some of the penalties in the first half were dumb.

“Is that because we made a mistake and tried to fix it up. They were avoidable penalties so we will give ourselves an upper cut and try to fix things up.” - NZME

Springboks do it hard

Sevens boys miss out on semi-finals berth Mid Canterbury’s build-up to the South Island sevens tournament in Timaru next month continued with a trip to Oamaru at the weekend for the North Otago Rugby Referees Sevens tournament. Eight teams contested the tournament on Saturday, but losses to eventual winners Otago Blue and runners up Southland saw Mid Canterbury miss out on a spot in the semi-finals. Mid Canterbury lost to Otago Blue 33-12 and Southland 29-17, but beat Mustangs 29-7, before going on to play South Canterbury in the fifth to eighth play-offs. Mid Canterbury will now host a sevens tournament of its own in Methven this weekend, before heading to Timaru for the South Island champs in December with hopes of qualifying for the nationals.

Maori run riot over Chile The Maori All Blacks were at their running best to finish their threematch Americas tour unbeaten with an emphatic 73-0 win over Chile at Las Condes yesterday.

Following up on their impressive tour-opening performance against the USA Eagles in Chicago and last week’s win over Brazil in Sao Paulo, the visitors ran in 11 unanswered tries in front of a sold-out crowd at Estadio San Carlos De Apoquindo.

In fine conditions conducive to attacking football, five-pointers to front-rower Tyrel, Lomax, No. 7 Mitch Karpik, fullback Josh Ioane and a double to halfback Bryn Hall helped the Maori All Blacks establish an impressive 35-0 halftime lead.

A length of the field try to replacement back Jonah Lowe continued the rout in the secondhalf, with fellow bench player also Sam Nock claiming a double to see the scoreboard tick past the half-century, before Karpik claimed his second five-pointer.

Lock Jackson Hemopo crossed out wide in the 77th minute before Karpik scampered over for his third in the shade of fulltime.

Live-wire first five-eighth Otere Black had a strong game with the ball in hand and was near perfect off the boot nailing eight conversions, with Ioane also kicking one goal.

South Africa may have stormed Murrayfield, but it took every ounce of the Springboks’ tenacity in what was at times a brutally physical encounter. Eventually, however, the visitors’ power in the collisions and at the breakdown told and provided the platform for the man of the match, Handre Pollard, to claim the converted try and four penalties which propelled the visitors to victory. Although South Africa were never behind on the scoreboard, this was a hellishly close run thing, as the Springboks coach readily conceded. “I really believe we’ve beaten a side which is now a huge force in world rugby,” said Rassie Erasmus. “They were very good, so this is a really satisfying win.”

Wallabies bounce back Australia have eased the pressure on coach Michael Cheika – for now – with a hard-fought, though at times unconvincing, 26-7 win over Italy in Padova. Under fire following last week’s meek attacking display in the 9-6 defeat to Wales, the Wallabies ran in four tries to seal an 18th successive victory over the Azzurri. It also marked the first time in 11 years the Wallabies have conceded less than 10 points in consecutive test matches. Success for ace filly

Cruz Bromac right on target for Interdoms

Promising two-year-old Miss Federer overcame some anxious moments prior to the running of the Listed Barneswood Farm Welcome Stakes (1000m) to claim her first stakes success at Riccarton on Saturday.

The Swiss Ace filly was race favourite for the juvenile feature following an impressive victory at the venue back in October.

The Andrew Carston-trained runner proved reluctant to enter the barriers but once settled was the first to clear the gates from barrier four.

Kept to the middle of the track by rider Matt Cameron, Miss Federer looked beaten at the 200m but rallied bravely to pip Challa and Diva Express at the post.

“I was a bit concerned at the furlong, but I knew she’d lift when Matt Cameron asked her,” Carston said.

“There’s not a lot of her but she’s got natural ability and as we just saw, she’s a racehorse.

“She’s only a $10,000 filly, and this is an awesome result for the whole team.”

It was a milestone win for the 2018 Gavelhouse.com Newcomer To Training recipient as it was his first at stakes level.

Carston selected the Nearco Stud-bred filly out of Bradbury Park’s New Zealand Bloodstock Book Two Yearling Sale Draft for $10,000 earlier this year.

“I thought she was just a nice, neat filly,” he said.

“I knew a little bit about her

mother from being a good mare down in the South Island and she was cheap enough.

“I’ve had a pretty good run buying horses at Karaka without spending a lot of money.”

Miss Federer has now banked $44,435 plus an $8000 Pearl Se-

ries Bonus for her large group of owners who were on hand to celebrate the victory.

Early morning call brings joy for Satherley A phone call from the National Racing Bureau in the early hours of Saturday morning delivered an unexpected reward for Cambridge jockey Lynsey Satherley.

The hard-working horsewoman was enjoying having a quiet morning when the 6.30am call came through advising fellow jockey Dylan Turner was ill and would have to forego the mount on the well-fancied Ocean Emperor in the Gr.2 Gartshore Tauranga Stakes (1600m).

“The Bureau told me that Gary (Hennessy) was looking for a rider to replace Dylan so I gave him a call and we agreed I would ride the horse later that day,” Satherley said.

“I had ridden a little bit for Gary earlier on in my career, so I was delighted he had thought about me.

“We talked about how he wanted the horse ridden and I thought he was a massive chance based on his lead-up form.

“While I might have been having a little bit of a lie in as I had the morning off, I certainly don’t mind getting calls like that one.”

“He tugged a bit but once Anna Jones (Woodsman) came around and sat outside Nicoletta he dropped the bit and travelled nicely for me.”

Satherley admitted some inside knowledge on the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsmantrained Nicoletta had helped when making her decision on when to make her challenge on Ocean Emperor.

“I ride a lot of trackwork for Murray and Andrew and have been on Nicoletta before,” she said. “She is a lovely mare on the way up and I knew she wouldn’t give in without a fight.

“I just had to get the timing right on my horse so he would have the best shot at her.

“It was a decent struggle but I was always confident we would get there as he is a very good horse with an explosive sprint.”

The win continues a good vein of form for Satherley who has ridden eight winners so far this season.

“It was a thrill to get the chance on a nice horse like that in a big race so hopefully it might mean I get a few more rides from it,” she said.

“I work hard at my riding and enjoy the opportunities I do get so I will make the most of this and just keep doing the job that I love.”

Cruz Bromac emerged as New Zealand’s best hope of Inter Dominion glory when he blew his NZ Free-For-All rivals off the track at Addington on Friday night.

The much-travelled pacer used his blistering gate speed to control the $200,000 sprint and give co-trainer and driver Natalie Rasmussen the premier pacing double of Cup week after she had won the New Zealand Cup with Thefixer on Tuesday.

But unlike Thefixer, who will stay in New Zealand, Cruz Bromac will head back to Australia as our main hope in the Inter Dominion Pacing series.

That starts at Melton in Victoria on December 1, with three rounds of heats before the A$500,000 final on December 15.

Cruz Bromac, who was bred in New Zealand before racing extensively in Australia and then coming home to be trained by the All Stars, now looks a potent Interdom challenger.

Not only does he has that wealth of hard Australian racing experience but his gate speed could be a huge factor in the heats and finals.

And with so many high-class pacers falling by the wayside for a variety of reasons in the last 12 months, he has picked the right year to tackle the series.

“It makes sense to go with him and we think he has a real chance,” said Rasmussen, who co-trains the seven-year-old with Mark Purdon.

“His gate speed will be a real asset and he has got better almost every start he has had with us.”

With the training partnership choosing not to take many of their stars to the series Cruz Bromac is now the horse that gives them a shot at an historic treble as they have won the last two Inter Dominions with two other stars, Smolda and Lazarus.

Cruz Bromac may not be in their class but this year’s series may not be as deep as the one Lazarus had to conquer last year.

As good as the winner was the performance of Turn It Up to run second at only his seventh start is one of the more remarkable for a pacer of such limited experience in recent harness racing history.

But while he is nominated for the Interdoms too he is very unlikely to go.

Jack’s Legend capitalised on a trailing run to finish third – his second straight placing in the race.

But the abject failure of the race was NZ Cup heroic second Tiger Tara, who sat parked but was beaten a long way from home, finishing 10 lengths behind the second last horse clearly below his best. That calls into question his Inter Dominion assault and his favouritism for the series after a brutally hard week in Christchurch.

Spratt grabs second NZ Cup victory

Ashburton’s Sarah Green and Ger Beemsterboer celebrated on Saturday as Media Sensation took out the Gavelhouse.com at Riccarton after a superb ride from top jockey Michael Coleman.

Visiting northern filly Media Sensation shrugged off a chequered trip to Christchurch to claim her maiden Group One victory in Saturday’s Gavelhouse.com New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m).

Prevented from travelling south earlier in the week due to fog in Christchurch, the Peter and Dawn Williams trained three-year-old only arrived at Riccarton on Friday courtesy of a special charter flight.

That disruption may have unnerved some lesser individuals, however the I Am Invincible filly never turned a hair as she dominated her rivals from on the pace, courtesy of a special ride from Michael Coleman.

The experienced horseman had his mount travelling sweetly beside pacemaker Wekaforce throughout before driving clear in the home straight to hold out the fast finishing Valalie and race favourite Xpression.

“She got the bounce right today and went forward to where there was no pressure outside the leader,” Coleman said.

“She travelled beautifully, although I may have gone a bit soon as I didn’t want to be caught napping if something really decided to sprint around us.

“She’s a quality filly and it’s great to be riding a Group One winner for Peter and Dawn.”

mitted he had a fleeting moment of panic prior to the race when eventual runner-up, Valalie, got down in the stall next to Media Sensation and had to be extricated by the barrier attendants before being passed fit to race.

“I was a wee bit worried when they were going to scratch that horse,” he said.

“I couldn’t see as she was out the back and I just hoped she wasn’t being naughty in the gates.

“She’s raced good today and I’m very happy as he rode her perfectly.”

for Media Sensation from the Lime Country Thoroughbreds draft at the 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sales.

It was the second win in the race for the Williams, Green and Beemsterboer combination after outstanding filly Planet Rock carried the same colours to victory in the 2011 edition of the contest.

Race favourite Xpression lost no admirers after battling on gamely in the run home while inexperienced filly Valalie was the eye-catcher.

Just twelve months ago rider Sam Spratt was the toast of Riccarton after securing her first New Zealand Cup with a daring front-running ride on outsider Gobstopper.

Fast forward to the 2018 edition of the Group Three feature and you could have been forgiven for thinking you were watching a replay as Spratt once again dominated proceedings from the front.

This time it was aboard Matamata visitor Bizzwinkle who had been absent when most were discussing the main chances in the 155th running of the time-honoured event.

That didn’t bother the Glenn Old-trained five-year-old who fought like a tiger in the straight to hold out a brave challenge from Duplicity and race favourite Felaar.

With the Rip Van Winkle gelding’s large band of owners threatening to tear the grandstand down with the noise they were making after the final result was declared, Old was taking the victory in his stride.

“We had faith in him being a real dour stayer,” he said.

“We set him for this race last March and Sam just rode him a treat. After we turned for home and he was still there I thought we were a chance of a placing. The closer we got to the post I could see we were going to hold them off.”

Spratt was sporting a huge grin as she returned to the winner’s enclosure and was her typically effervescent self when questioned about the ride.

“I seem to have had quite a bit of luck with this race,” she said.

Organisers welcomed 115 horses from as far away as Invercargill and Nelson to Ashburton for the two-day regional championship show. It was held on the showgrounds’ main oval and fortunately for organisers the forecast rain stayed away for the most part.

England powers to test series win

BY REX CLEMENTINE England won the second cricket test by 57 runs on the final day in Pallekele to clinch their first series victory in 17 years in Sri Lanka yesterday.

The tourists, who took out the first test in Galle by 211 runs,

needed just 32 minutes to complete the win in the second test as their spinners again ripped through the home side’s batting line-up at Pallekele Stadium.

Sri Lanka, resuming at 7-226, required 75 runs to win the game but could add only 17, as Moeen Ali struck twice in one over before

Jack Leach had Malinda Pushpakumara caught-and-bowled to seal the victory.

Sri Lanka’s chances to pull off a difficult win depended heavily on Niroshan Dickwella, but local hopes faded quickly as the wicketkeeper-batsman was dismissed for 35 by Ali (4-72) when

Ben Stokes held a good catch at first slip.

Two balls later, captain Suranga Lakmal was bowled by Ali for a duck to bring England closer to the brink of their first series victory in Sri Lanka since Nasser Hussain’s 2001 side recorded a comefrom-behind 2-1 win. Leach (5-83)

sealed the win when he took a return catch off Pushpakumara to claim a maiden five-wicket haul.

Skipper Joe Root was named man of the match for his 124 that helped the visitors to 346 in their second innings, after they had conceded a deficit of 46 runs in the first innings.
