Council deploys staff to quake area

The Ashburton District might have escaped the worst of Monday morning’s catastrophic earthquake in the Kaikoura area and people from around the district are heavily involved in the post earthquake recovery.

Staff from the Ashburton District Council including building inspectors, welfare teams, search and rescue and Civil Defence personnel have been working in the area for most of the week.

Emergency services manager Terry O’Neill has been based at the Amberley District Council offices as part of the emergency operations planning team.

Their job has been to both planning and responding to need.

Methven and Rakaia search and rescue teams had been working in the Waiau area door knocking and checking to ensure damaged buildings were clear of people.

The first of the council aid teams were dispatched into the area on Wednesday and that aid in terms of council staff would continue for at least another week or two, council acting environmental services

manager Ian Hyde said.

In the first wave of responders, the council sent its senior emergency services personnel and these were likely to be replaced next week by another council team.

“We’ve had a teleconference this morning and we’ll be sending up more staff as needed and as we can without compromising our own business,” Hyde said.

Regional headquarters had asked councils in the Canterbury region for a list of their resources, particularly those who were Civil Defence and emergency response trained.

“They’ll come back and say what they need and we’ll say this is what we have available. We’re in the process of making arrangements to roll over the staff who’re there now to ensure there is on-going capability.”

How long assistance would be needed was very much up in the air at the moment, he said.

“Right now we’re reactive to what’s going on up there and once we know what’s needed then the operation will move into a more planned phase.”

Successful year for Newcomers

A successful year is drawing to a close for Ashburton’s Newcomers’ Network.

At yesterday’s Annual General Meeting board members spoke about the past year and goals for the future.

Chairperson Rob Davidson, a long time Ashburton resident and minister, said while they were sorry so see the previous co-ordinator Louise Glennon go, they were happy with her replacement, Sophie-Claire Violette.

“She has brought considerable passion for newcomers and initiatives to the project,” he said.

Davidson has been a part of the Newcomers’ Network in Mid Canterbury since it was established.

He said the relocation of the co-ordinator’s office to Community House has been a positive move. “[The move] places our coordinator with ready access to many other community agencies for support and networking at this central location,” Davidson said.

Violette said her first four months have been great.

“To see how the demographic in the town has been changing, especially with younger people coming in from bigger hubs to jobs outside on farms, has been really great,” she said.

She said one of the year’s highlights was the Race Relations Day which was a joint event between the Newcomers and Ashburton Youth Council.

“To support migrants and newcomers to find their place, settle in and thrive in our community,” she said.

Cornelius Grobler, who established the Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy – a hugely successful initiative to work with the town’s youth, was the guest speaker.

Grobler, a migrant himself, spoke about his life in South Africa and how it influenced his decision to start the academy.

He said his childhood was traumatic and he never learned key values like respect, caring, kindness and tolerance, so he wanted to create a place in Ashburton to provide that for young boys.

Talent turns out for Todd Cup By noah Graham

Between 50 to 60 friends and family packed into the Ashburton Borough School hall on Thursday night to watch their sons and daughters perform in the annual Todd Cup competition.

The Todd Cup started in 1961 and celebrated its 55th year with performances from Ashburton Borough students, one as young as five.

Henrietta Harford, 12, won the girls’ section and 13-year-old Isaac Diamond was judged the winner in the boys’ section.

Ashburton Borough School Year 5 and 6 and performing arts teacher Anna Driscoll thought the performances were impressive.

“It was nice seeing the children from all ages perform.”

The school had nine judged solo performances and seven unjudged.

Driscoll said there were some nerves from the students but all produced great performances in the end.

She said their five-year-old student, who was the youngest performer in recent memory, sang Baa Baa Black Sheep with his Dad, who helped.

“It was really cute.”

The students and families all had a good time.

“Everybody was really pleased.”

Finally, some really good news

Mid Canterbury dairy farmers financially battered by low milk payouts over the past two seasons are catching their breath after Fonterra raised its forecast milk price for the 2016-17 season to $6kgMS. Federated Farmers local dairy spokesman Nathan Currie said the projected payout lift was positive and exciting news, but there was a lot of debt to be repaid and farmers would still be keeping a lid on costs.

“That said, it is great news, especially before Christmas.”

He said farmers had been losing money for nearly three years and the deficit would have to be repaid to banks along with loan repayments. “A lot have gone onto interest only repayments and banks will not like that to carry on for long. It is a volatile world and I think dairy farmers have realised just how financially vulnerable we have been and that our balance sheets need to be reinforced better.”

DairyNZ has been working with farmers to stay profitable since the payout plunged from $8.40 in the 2013-14 season to $4.40 the next year. It says that

25 per cent of dairy farmers are still not making enough to cover their working expenses, an improvement from 95 per cent the previous season.

It would boost the average dairy farmer’s revenue by $260,000, the industry body said.

Fonterra’s revised payout plus forecast dividends of 50-60 cents will take the total payout to farmers at the end of this season to $6.50 to $6.60 before retentions.

Currie said it was also good news for dairy farmers affected by the earthquakes. Mid Canterbury farmers are continuing to

offer resources and land for animals that need to be temporarily relocated.

He said he was proud of the local response and farmers in North Canterbury and Kaikoura would need support for a long time yet.

Fonterra chairman John Wilson said the milk price increase reflected improvements in pricing since September, following the gradual rebalancing of global supply and demand.

“We’ve seen falling production in the major exporting regions, particularly Europe and Australia, and an unprecedented de-

cline in New Zealand milk supply due to wetter than normal spring conditions across most regions. On balance, demand continues to be firm.

“As a result there has been a steady improvement in global dairy commodity prices and this is reflected in the improved forecast.

“We are very mindful that farm incomes will be affected this year because of lower milk production so we will be doing everything possible to build on our good start to the financial year and deliver the highest possible total payout to our farmers.”

Lack of stock hits pelt house

The pelt house at Silver Fern Farms’ Fairton plant has been hit by a double whammy – lush spring growth meaning fewer stock coming forward and earthquake damaged State Highway One. Ashburton’s plant processes pelts from around the South Island, but supply shortages

mean there will be no work for staff on Monday.

And while Silver Fern Farms spokesman Justin Courtney believes there will be work for the rest of the week, he said at this stage it is unclear whether there will be sufficient pelts to process on the following Monday.

“The last couple of years they’ve been flat-tack taking

pelts from around the country, but our seasonal staff’s work is based on stock flows,” he said.

A decrease in the number of lambs coming through would have made an impact on processing hours but the earthquake had also played its part in cutting the in-flow of pelts from other parts of the South Island, Courtney said.

rumours that the non-processing day on Monday was an indication that the pelt house could be in trouble.

“Fairton’s pelt house has not closed down. We always let staff know as soon as we can when there is and isn’t work.”

At this stage, Courtney anticipates the following week will see Monday processing resume.

Two concerned Rakaia residents are doing their bit to help Kaikoura. Between 9am and noon today outside the Rakaia Community Hall people can drop off items or money they wish to donate to people affected by Monday’s quake. The drop off is being run by Kathryn Fleming and Amanda Beevor and they want non-perishable food items and sanitary products, any money will be given to the Red Cross. The donated items will then be flown up to Kaikoura this weekend by Garden City Helicopters.

Incorrect decade In Friday, November 18’s edition of the Guardian, the information provided on the Dalgety image in the Your Place page stated the photo was from the 1970s. One critically injured in crash near Rakaia One person was critically injured and a section of State Highway One was closed following a serious crash south of Rakaia yesterday.

The crash between a truck

and trailer unit and a car occurred just before 5.30am yesterday morning and a road worker at the scene said trucks were backed up all along the road after the collision.

The person was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

The Serious Crash Unit was on scene investigating the incident and traffic was detoured

around the area.

Southbound traffic was directed west onto Thomson’s Track, then onto Somerton Road and back to the main road at Dromore Corner.

Pub red stickered One of New Zealand’s oldest pubs has been temporarily closed after fears it has been earthquake damaged. But publican Sean Madden of the historic Hurunui Hotel in North Canterbury, who only took over the lease two months ago, is hopeful that it’ll soon be declared safe to reopen.

The hotel, which has had the longest continuous liquor licence in the country, dating back to 1860, appeared to have stood up well in Monday morning’s devastating magnitude-7.8 tremor.

Helping hand for quake victims

Lagmhor School students are helping Kaikoura families in need after the high magnitude earthquake on Monday.

The students baked more than 70 chocolate chip cookies, with help from Lagmhor School teacher aid Roz Rhodes, on Wednesday which were sent up to Kaikoura on Thursday morning.

Along with the baked goods, the students were asked to help collect other food and toiletries from their families.

They ended up with a stack of food and goods which ranged from tinned food, chocolate, pasta and the essential – toilet paper.

Lagmhor School leader Claudine Campbell was pleased with the amount of food supplied and the effort from the local families.

“We had four big banana boxes full of items to give. They filled up my car boot.”

As well as the items, the students wrote cards of support and well-wishes for the families in Kaikoura.

The students have followed coverage of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake and the aftermath.

“When [the students] heard about the families on Tuesday, they wanted to help,” Campbell said.

Mount Hutt College students have also lent a hand as they brought in bottles of water or a gold coin donation yesterday.

Cafe dives right in to kids’ fundraiser The simple act of giving could have earned one person a free cup of coffee every day for a year.

To do their bit for the Cure Kids Red Nose Appeal, staff at Ashburton’s Columbus took the red nose day message seriously, dressing in red, decorating their café in red and even turning some of their food red.

Owner Nigel Heney had collection buckets in store for the day and provided customers with every incentive to give – one lucky giver will receive a free coffee every day for a year.

Funds raised across New Zealand will go towards

high-impact medical research to find the cures children need.

Cure Kids has been funding this research for 45 years. Last year’s appeal raised more than $1 million.

Be on the alert for scams

No-one is immune to being targeted by scammers says Brophy Knight director David Fisher.

As Fraud Awareness Week wraps up he’s reminding people that being alert for fraud or scams of any kind should be an ongoing awareness.

People from all walks of life, backgrounds and ages are vulnerable, and everyone must be constantly alert for fraudulent contact, Fisher said.

“We want to remind Mid Canterbury people of the dangers of scams and the need to be vigilant.

We all receive junk emails, enticing online advertisements, letters offering a private purchase of shares for a low price, phone calls from people purporting to be people who they are not, and so on.”

nications tend to look very credible and, on the surface, perfectly viable. But of course they’re all designed to steal your money. Tax scams are also prevalent where

you’re contacted by someone, either online or on the phone, by someone saying they’re from the Inland Revenue or a tax specialist. The IRD will not contact you in this way, nor will any genuine tax specialist.”

Brophy Knight has sent its clients a checklist that will help avoid investing in scams. It includes links to the Financial Markets Authority’s website so clients can check they’re using a registered New Zealand broker or investor, a link to check scam alerts and so on. The firm is also sending these clients a list of ways to help keep themselves safe, and what to do if they think they’ve been scammed.

Student’s study finances boosted

The financial burden of her first year of tertiary study will now be a little lighter for Ashburton College student Lucy Clough.

She’ll have an extra $1000 in her bank account when she heads to Otago University next year, thanks to a new Ashburton College Alumni Scholarship. This has been funded by NBS Ashburton.

The building society’s manager Rod Fox said that supporting the scholarship was something he was keen to do, as part of his business’ commitment to the Ashburton District.

The award recognises the commitment of a Year 13 student to the college. Three candidates were selected by the college with a small group of alumni executive and building society representatives making the final choice.

Alumni chairman Alister Argyle said the final three were all of a very high calibre with Clough acknowledged as a very impressive winner.

Next year she is studying health science and will include two music papers in her workload. She sings, plays the piano, cello and double bass.

When she was announced as winner of the inaugural scholarship, Clough said she was stunned. For her, total commitment to college life was an important part of being a student.

“Ashburton College offers so many ways that students can be involved. It’s quite normal for me to give back to Mid Canterbury – it’s given so much to me,” she said.

Clough is currently in the middle of her NCEA exams and will spend most of her summer break working. A highlight, however will be attending the 11-day New Zealand Singing School in January.

Hunt for predator A police appeal for public help after a child was abducted and sexually assaulted in Ranui on Thursday is attracting good information, police say. Police have said the investigation was being treated as a priority and CIB detectives, as well as detectives from the Child Protection Team, are working on the case. A diabetic for 28 years

Being diagnosed with a life-long disease in your early 20s can be quite a shock.

Christina Don, originally from Timaru and now living in Ashburton, has had Type One Diabetes for 28 years of her life.

“I was 24 years old when I was diagnosed, it was 1988 and I was drinking lots of water,” she said.

Thirst is one of the main symptoms of diabetes because as the kidneys try to lower the blood sugar level through urine

which will dehydrate the body.

Don said she made an appointment with her doctor who then asked her to come in and take a blood test.

“I was in the hospital for a couple of days doing tests and then they finally came back to me and said it was diabetes,” she said.

Diabetes is a disease caused by the body becoming unable to produce insulin, which regulates blood sugar levels, or becomes resistant to it.

Type One Diabetes is the rarer

of the two main types and it cannot be prevented.

This type is a result of an autoimmune response within the body where the immune system attacks the cells responsible for creating insulin in the body.

Around 10 per cent of people with diabetes have type one.

Don said when she first had her blood sugar level measured it was up at 52, which is far higher than the recommended level of below 10.

Don also has Brittle Diabetes, which is an even rarer form

which means she cannot control her levels and they often spike up and down.

To manage her diabetes she takes slow acting insulin three times a day half an hour before food and two long lasting injections, as well as tablets.

Don said when she was first diagnosed it was a bit of a shock, especially as she didn’t know any family history around diabetes.

She has two daughters and her eldest has Type Two Diabetes while her youngest gets regular check-ups.

Police have confirmed that a 4-year-old boy has died at the daycare centre in Takapuna, following what appears to be a tragic accident. Police were called to the scene on Anzac St at Angels Childcare Centre just after 2pm yesterday. Detective Sergeant Ross Clapp said early indications are that the child has died following an accident on playground equipment, however police are still working to establish the full circumstances of what has occurred.

Mountains of food was delivered to Takahanga marae at lunch time yesterday. Nelson plasterer Rob Coombes, 49, had the idea a few days ago. He called businesses around the region and hauled together a load of donated goods that he flew down. A plane with 400 pieces of KFC chicken, 300 McDonald’s burgers and 50 Domino’s pizzas landed in time for lunch.

The five big quake questions Could Monday’s quake trigger a sleeper tsunami or an Alpine Fault quake?

Are we living in an era of quakes? NZME science reporter Jamie Morton tackles five big questions facing scientists.

1. Has the quake increased the chance of a sleeper tsunami?

One potentially increased threat is a rapid-fire tsunami from the submarine Kaikoura Canyon – which recent modelling has shown is capable of generating a wave with a crest 13m above sea level.

The huge canyon comes up to within 500m of the coast south of Kaikoura and feeds sediment into the 1500km-long Hikurangi Channel that runs east of New Zealand.

It posed a unique threat due to its combination of factors, including very shallow water next to the canyon edge; steep slopes of the canyon which drops off down to 1000m; large areas where there might be weak sediment; large earthquake sources nearby and all of it very close to the highway and populated areas.

In 2006, scientists from the National Institute of Water and Atmosphere (Niwa) said that a possibly severe tsunami off the Kaikoura coast could be triggered

by either a submarine earthquake, or underwater landslides that occurred at the canyon’s head every 200 years on average.

Niwa marine geologist Dr Joshu Mountjoy, who has assessed the threat over recent years, told NZME recently it was unclear what Monday’s 7.5 earthquake could have meant for the canyon’s stability.

“One of the faults most likely ruptured right through the head of the canyon, so there’ll be plenty to see there.”

Mountjoy said there was yet no indication of a landslidegenerated tsunami, and if one had occurred, the coast being uplifted by a metre would have mitigated the tsunami’s run-up on land.

“But it’s highly likely that the canyon rim is less stable now than it was before the earthquake, due to shaking,” he said.

“We’d expect it to precondition the slopes for failure, so it’s possible failure could happen in an aftershock, and certainly suggests people should stay away from the coast.”

A landslide-generated tsunami in the area could occur at very little notice.

“You could have a scenario there where it’s all cracked quite a bit ... and it doesn’t take too much more and it might reach the threshold we think of as our natural warning, which is a minute or more of a really vigorous shake.

“But now it might be something we could consider slightly below that threshold.”

The immediate hazard covered a stretch of the coast between the Kaikoura Peninsula and Oaro – a section that remained blocked off.

“But of course, people live in places like Goose Bay,” he said.

Mountjoy was now discussing with colleagues whether an urgent assessment of the canyon’s stability was needed.

“We have been through many aftershocks already and nothing has been reported – but I don’t think there’s any field teams on the ground at the moment, so exactly what has happened is unclear.”

The risk of a similar threat facing Wellington from underwater landslides in the aftermath of the quake was less likely.

2. Has it increased the chance of an Alpine Fault quake?

There have been many questions over whether the quake stirred the “sleeping giant” that is arguably our biggest earthquake threat, the Alpine Fault.

This vast system, running along the spine of the South Island, is likely to cause a major quake within this generation’s lifetime.

It last ruptured in 1717, or 297 years ago, and had a 28 per cent probability of rupturing in the next 50 years – a rate high by global standards.

According to GNS Science, this rupture would produce one of the biggest earthquakes since European settlement of New Zealand and would have a “major impact” on the lives of many people.

Could Monday’s quake have increased the

risk?

“Who knows?” Victoria University earthquake scientist Dr Tim Stern said.

“You’d think with the Christchurch quakes, and this one, that it would have set that fault off by now.”

But there was still much that remained unclear about the drivers of a potential Alpine Fault quake.

One approach scientists could use was modelling Coulomb stress transfer, where stress from one system could be pushed to another.

But Stern pointed out that many faults were typically stressed to critical points anyway.

Otago University geologist Dr Virginia Toy suspected the chances of an effect on the Alpine Fault were marginal.

GNS Science geodynamic modeller Dr Charles Williams said some Coulomb stress modelling had been undertaken following the quake, but this had so far only looked at the Wellington and Wairarapa faults.

“The other problem we have right now is we know so little about the slip that occurred in the earthquake

that it would be hard to do a very accurate Coulomb model right now,” he said.

“You wouldn’t want to say too much at this point.”

3. What can the Kaikoura Earthquake tell us?

So far, we know the 7.5 quake that struck near Culverden was dynamic, complex and involved multiple faults.

we’re all asking surface cracks in the ground to calculate distances by which different faults had shifted.

What was recorded on the ground would also be compared with data captured from satellites, with more insights to be gathered

by GeoNet monitoring equipment set to be deployed around the region.

“What a lot of the scientists are trying to find out is how much movement basically was on each of these faults,” Balfour said.

“We are trying to get an understanding of how much they moved as it can help us with a better understanding of the impacts that they caused.

“And hopefully this will better inform our models as well, although most of our forecasts are based on statistics.”

Stern said the event had triggered many intriguing questions.

“The thing that interests us the most is how the subduction zone beneath that area works its way into the strike slip system, and then into the Alpine Fault system,” he said.

“There’s some sort of process or structural dynamic, which goes from a classic subduction zone in the Wellington area and Marlborough, and then it migrates and morphs into the Marlborough strike-slip faults, and then finally into the Alpine Fault.

“And we are always intrigued in a three-dimensional sense of how, mechanically, does this work?”

“The faults where we’ve seen those ruptures are the Kekerengu Fault near the coast, the Hope Fault, where there has been some minor movement, and the Hundalee Fault,” GNS Science seismologist Dr Natalie Balfour said.

The quake had also revealed a previously unknown fault near Waipapa Bay. It appeared the initial

quake had caused stress to jump from one fault to another, causing multiple quakes that lasted a combined two minutes – the most severe lasting 50 seconds.

One of the quakes appeared to have been driven by “strike slip” faulting, while the other one was “thrust” faulting – a type of reverse faulting observed in the February 22, 2011, Christchurch earthquake.

“This is obviously all part of the Marlborough Fault System, which is quite a complex system of faults, so [in regard to the earthquake], it’s not a surprise.”

4. Are we in an earthquake period, or is it just coincidence?

“New Zealand is a very seismically active country and it seems at the moment that we are going through a period of quite a lot of large earthquakes,” Balfour said.

“The last time we had a series of large earthquakes in New Zealand was around the 1950s – it seems we’ve just had the East Cape, and we’ve had Christchurch, and now this.”

But because of the sheer complexity of these sequences, and each individual quake, it was difficult to draw straight lines between an event such as the 7.8 2009 Dusky Sound quake – our biggest in recent times – and Monday’s 7.5 event. Stern said his colleagues had been able to create “pairings” of big quakes that were suspected to be related.

These included those that struck Marlborough and Wairarapa in 1848 and 1855; the Arthur’s Pass and Murchison quakes in 1929; the 1931 Napier Earthquake and the 1932 Wairoa Earthquake; the 2010 Darfield and 2011 Christchurch quakes; and the Cook Strait and

Lake Grassmere quakes in 2013.

“So we do see pairings of big quakes, and in a year’s time, we could still expect another one, I guess, given our record,” Stern said.

“But that’s all we’ve got to go on: this is what we are hamstrung by, it’s not like forecasting the weather, where you’ve got gazillions of systems to model on – we’ve only got a cycle which lasts 140 years, and it’s just not long enough to see any patterns that are stable.”

Stern suspected that such sequences weren’t just exclusive to New Zealand – larger trends and patterns could be worked out when looking at earthquake occurrences across the rest of the globe.

5. How accurate are the aftershock probabilities?

There were more than 800 aftershocks recorded Wednesday and overnight, most of them just east of Seddon and some also close to the centre of Kaikoura.

A trio of “severe” quakes were also recorded Wednesday night, reaching a magnitude 5.8.

Most earthquake aftershock sequences decay over time, with spikes of activity and occasional larger earthquakes.

GeoNet has issued aftershock probabilities that describe the likely progression of the sequence over the coming months.

There are very different probabilities for each scenario.

Scientists have developed three scenarios based on what they know so far, but they add that their understanding is evolving as they do more analysis and receive more data.

Balfour said the probabilities that had been put out so far had generally been in line with what had been observed.

Over the next 30 days, there was an almost certain probability of many quakes ranging between 5.0 and 5.9 and 6.0 and 6.9, although the probability of another quake of over 7.0 was much smaller.

“There is still a very likely probability of a magnitude 6.0 to 6.9 quake – so that’s fairly high and it’s likely this would cause some strong shaking as well.”

But Balfour said vigilance was still the best approach.

“The thing to always have in the back of your mind when reading these probabilities and these scenarios is that we do need to be prepared,” she said.

“If there’s anything that what’s happened since 2009 has taught us, we need to be prepared, we need to know what to do in a quake, and we need to have a lot of food, water and other supplies.”

Reigning men’s champion Rhys Cromie will not be able to defend his crown due to prior commitments.

Cromie secured his eighth title with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win over Sam Bubb in the men’s singles final last year.

Bubb will no doubt be gunning for his maiden Gala Cup title, but will face fierce competition from the likes of 2014 champion Neil McCann, 2015 semi-finalist Flynn Ness and plate winner Aidan Mitchell.

Meanwhile Tessa McCann will be out to defend the women’s singles title.

The 15-year-old stunned three-time winner Ashleigh Leonard in last year’s final.

Doubles will also be played.

Last year Cromie made it a day to remember by adding the doubles title to his singles triumph with partner Peter Leonard.

The duo toppled Simon Jordan and Koji Kawamata 6-4, 6-3 in the men’s doubles final while Leonard took some solace from her singles defeat by winning the women’s doubles with partner Stacey Hopwood.

Play will begin this morning followed by finals tomorrow.

Canadian rookie Mackenzie Hughes had visions of a sub-60 score as he posted a flawless nine-under-par 61 to lead the US PGA Tour’s RSM Classic at Sea Island, Georgia. The 25-year-old web.com Tour graduate posted nine birdies as he took a one-shot lead from Americans Stewart Cink and Jonathan Byrd, who were also playing the par-70 Seaside course, one of two courses in use. - NZME

Golden rowing partnership put on hold Two-time Olympic Champion Drysdale has agreed with Rowing New Zealand to a twelve month break from competition with the intention to continue his esteemed rowing career through to Tokyo 2020.

Behrent is taking a year off while Scown resumes training with the summer squad.

Other athletes pressing pause include Zoe Stevenson, two-time world champion in the women’s double sculls.

Stevenson’s crewmate Eve Macfarlane has also chosen to take a year-long break.

New Zealand Rowing’s biggest names are taking a break in 2017.

Men’s pair and double gold medallists Hamish Bond and Eric Murray and the women’s pair of Rebecca Scown and Genevieve Behrent, who won silver in Rio, are both parting ways for next season.

Murray will resume training post minor surgery on his knee but will be unavailable for international competition during 2017 while Hamish Bond will take a twelve month break.

Single sculler Mahe Drysdale is also taking a break from the sport.

New Zealand’s Steven Alker has returned to form on the PGA Tour, carding a flawless six-under 64 at a tournament in Sea Island, Georgia. Alker shares eighth place, three strokes behind Canadian Mackenzie Hughes, who also played on the Seaside course, one of two being used for the RSM Classic. The 45-year-old didn’t drop a shot and split his six birdies evenly between the front and back nines.

Alker’s return to the Tour this season began with two encouraging top-35 finishes but he missed the cut on his two subsequent starts. Tim Wilkinson also began well, shooting a five-under 67 on the Plantation course.

Lee on the charge He’s been the ‘other’ amateur from Perth at this week’s Australian Open and forever playing second fiddle to his superstar sister Minjee, but Min Woo Lee cares little for sibling rivalry as he climbs up the Australian Open leaderboard.

Lee arrived at Royal Sydney with less fanfare than fellow Western Australian Curtis Luck, but his round of five-under-par 67 yesterday propelled the 18-yearold into the top 10 at Royal Sydney.

Lee – who this year became the first Australian male to win the US Junior Amateur title – believes he’s already done enough to emerge from the shadow of older sister Minjee, a three-time LPGA Tour winner by the age of 20.

Mal still the man in England

R

ace day here I am.

It’s D-Day today.

I’m as ready as I can be.

In retrospect and in all honesty, I haven’t followed my 12 week training to the letter, missed few runs and the long 18km run two weeks ago.

This has played on my mind, like a little devil sitting on my shoulder, saying “you should have religiously trained Emma and you’ll be struggling because of that”.

The little angel on my other shoulder is fighting the devil telling him to be quiet and saying I have

trained consistently, achieved great results the past 12 weeks and that I will be fine on race day even if it will be difficult.

Who of the devil and the angel will be right I wonder?

I am betting all my money on the angel and have kicked the devil off its pedestal.

I am full of determination, pumped up with positive thoughts and I have you all in my mind.

You – friends, family, colleagues, clients, strangers – you who have supported me since I started this challenge.

I have been amazed and have a deep gratitude towards you all

EMMA ON THE RUN

for your kind words, your encouragement and your caring.

I have felt the love the past 12 weeks, thanks to each and every one of you.

You will carry me to the finish line.

It is your voices, your words that I will hear when I am struggling and wanting to quit and they are what will make me keep going.

As someone I have great respect for reminded me a few

days ago, “What the mind thinks, the body will follow.”

My mind is my strongest asset for this race.

YOU, in my mind, will be my strength when my body fails.

So I will be just fine.

Plus people who know me well, know how stubborn and strong minded I can be.

PS: I do have the will, however, if it hails in Queenstown during the race like it did in Ashburton on Wednesday, my will will disappear and I will get the ‘sweeper’ (the person who collects people who can’t finish the race) to drive me to the nearest pub!

Kiwi skipper talks tough

By Michael Burgess Jesse Bromwich has a simple message for Kiwis’ fans looking for hope.

Ahead of the Four Nations final against the Kangaroos on Monday (NZT), the Kiwis’ captain is confident his team can pull off a major upset.

The New Zealand side appears to have a near impossible task at Anfield, given the respective form of the two teams, but Bromwich believes the Kiwis are capable of clinching their third major title this decade.

“I think we can,” Bromwich said.

“There is no way I am going to say we can’t do this.

“I have full confidence in our

boys ... we are all here representing our country, our families and I am sure we can put it out there this weekend.”

Bromwich is aware that many pundits, on both sides of the Tasman, have written the Kiwis off.

They have lost all three matches against the Kangaroos this year, including heavy defeats in Newcastle and Perth. And the Australian side has got better as this tournament has progressed, whereas the Kiwis have been patchy throughout.

“Experts have done that in the past and the Kiwis have been victorious,” said Bromwich.

“There is no doubt we can play a good match ... no doubt at all.”

The 27-year-old, who missed training yesterday but is expect-

ed to play on Monday, also confronted the attitude questions that have dogged the team since their surprise 18-18 draw with Scotland.

“It’s very tough,” said Bromwich.

“It’s hard not to say there was an attitude problem because it kind of looks that way [from the outside] when you put things into perspective. “[But] I don’t think we’ll have an attitude problem this week.

We are playing at Liverpool’s home ground, it will be a massive crowd, and the final of the Four nations ... we will be up for this.”

As a skipper, Bromwich has come a long way in six months, after being appointed for the Anzac test in May.

“I’ve grown into it a little more,” said Bromwich.

“At the start I didn’t see myself being captain. But I’m enjoying it more.”

It’s not ideal to have a prop as captain – given their unrelenting work rate – but Bromwich is becoming a leader.

In awful conditions, he refused to come off in the first half against Scotland and played more than 70 minutes in the match.

“I didn’t want to lose that game,” said Bromwich. “[There were] also a lot of boys on their debuts [and] I didn’t want to not be out there with them.

“I wanted to stay out there as long as I could and help them along.”

It’s been over 30 years since Mal Meninga was tearing up the English rugby league scene but people around the Liverpool area have long memories.

It’s a region where Liverpool and Everton dominate the sporting conversation, but mention rugby league to one of the region’s many loquacious taxi drivers and they’ll invariably bring up Meninga.

The Kangaroos coach was at the peak of his career when St Helens pulled off the biggest signing in the club’s history by convincing him to join for the 1984-85 season on a big-money contract.

He repaid them with a whopping 28 tries in 31 games and still to this day is regarded as one of the greatest imports to play in the English game.

“I loved my time living and playing at St Helens,” Meninga said.

“I used to come down to Anfield, which is just down the road, quite a lot when I wasn’t playing, to watch Liverpool play.

“Craig Johnston, the Aussie midfielder, was there and carving it up and we became good friends.

“Liverpool were the top dogs at the time and I became mates with many of the players who’d come down and watch our games.

“Unfortunately I broke my arm and couldn’t go back and play for a second season. But it’s a time I look back fondly upon.”

Broadcaster RayFrench believes he hasn’t seen a better and more influential player than Meninga during his 60-year association with the game.

“He was fantastic for us, there had never been anyone like him before over here and there hasn’t been anyone since,” he said.

“There is also a humility to Mal. “He has no edge to him and his word is his bond and we remain great friends to this day.” - AAP

Heartland tour ‘memorable’ Three Mid Canterbury players were selected to the Heartland XV 2016 tour while Hammers manager Tony Harrison was also chosen to manage the team.

Ashburton Guardian News & Sports Co-ordinator James Ford caught up with Harrison to discuss the tour and the Mid Canterbury players’ performances.

The Heartland XV picked up good wins against New Zealand Marist and Nadi before a narrow loss against Fijian champions Nadroga, what did you make of the three performances?

Heartland XV 35 New Zealand Marist 14 With limited preparation and players from 11 of the 12 provinces represented it’s always a tough ask to bring players together in a short space of time and expect them to gel straight away.

A simple game plan, one which could be implemented within the little time we had, was agreed upon by all and included considerable input from the senior players.

We started off slow against Marist, not scoring until the 23rd minute, and our scrum was certainly under the pump from a strong Marist pack.

However, once the boys started to work more together as a team, more opportunities opened up and we established a 14-0 lead at the half-time break.

Straight after half time we had a prop binned for 10min and that’s when Marist scored their two tries. Once we were back at full strength we started to dominate the game up front and eventually scored three more tries in the second half, and, to be fair, it could be have been a couple more.

But overall, we gave ourselves a pass mark to the start of the campaign.

Heartland XV 26 Nadi 19 Against Nadi, we didn’t really know what to expect. With limited footage available it was a little difficult to prepare an appropriate game plan.

Two quick tries in the first 15 minutes and we were up 12-0.

Nadi were looking a little disorganised but unfortunately we were unable to capitalise on that and only went in 12-0 up at the break.

Two more tries in the first 10 minutes of the second half and we were up 26-0 but once again, we couldn’t carry on and put them away. Nadi came back strong in the latter half of the second half and that’s when the heat started to affect our guys.

Coming from 16-18 degrees in Auckland to 30 degrees and humid in Nadi was certainly a shock to the system, but it was a good blowout for the next match against Nadroga and certainly gave the coaches a lot to think about in terms of selection for the final game.

Kick-off at 7pm was good for us as it was going to be slightly cooler.

The sheer size and physical presence of the Nadroga team was impressive.

Made up of a mixture of army, police and professional players, it was very obvious they were a step or two above Nadi and a very professional and well drilled side.

We started the game well, holding onto the ball for extended periods and not allowing Nadroga to get a hold of it as we knew they would be dangerous both in broken play but also gaining quick ball from the rucks.

After 10 minutes we were up 10-0 with a converted try and penalty.

Once Nadroga got the ball they were dangerous, out wide they had strength, size and pace, and in close their size allowed them to off load in contact at will. Because

of their size and strength they were difficult to tackle and their leg drive in contact was impressive to watch. They scored two tries in the first half to lead at half-time 14-10.

We were still confident at the half-time break and just needed to maintain our structure and stick to our game plan and the opportunities would come.

Nadroga got off to a flier in the second half and before we knew it we were down 26-12. In the last 25 minutes with some fresh legs we started to play, but their defence was strong. We scored two late tries in the last six minutes but couldn’t quite get over the line.

We certainly had the team to win but you have to put an 80 minute performance on the park.

Overall, generally very happy with the way the team performed given the short time we were together.

Mid Canterbury had three players selected, Jackson Donlan, Maleli Sau and Nete Caucau, how do you think they fared throughout the tour?

Jackson and Maleli played in all three games and Nete in the last two in Fiji.

Jackson was on the bench against NZ Marist and then started against Nadi and impressed particularly with his defence and mobility around the park, which led to him being picked to start against Nadroga.

The ball didn’t really go Maleli’s way in the first two games but he was impressive when he came on against Nadroga.

Nete was used as an impact player in both games in Fiji and was impressive in both. He carried strongly in both games and consistently carried two or three guys with him over the gain line, and worked really hard off the ball to stay in our systems.

It must be noted that both Nete and Maleli were the two most popular players with the Fijian media, albeit they were reluctant celebrities.

How important do you feel the Heartland XV is in representing the talent within the Heartland Championships?

The Heartland Competition is a pathway for those young players aspiring to further their rugby careers. There are recent examples of this with Stephen Perofeta last year and Marty Banks a few years back.

The Heartland XV also rewards those players who have achieved at the highest level for their province and allows them to pull on the black jersey to represent their country even though they are from the more rural regions of the country and are not the All Blacks.

What was your fondest memory of the tour?

The camaraderie within the team was nothing short of exceptional and I made a lot of new friends as a result – it was an awesome experience and a privilege to be a part of such an exceptional group of people.

Clearly representing your country in any capacity is special and a memory to cherish.

However, whilst in Fiji, we visited a primary school and a secondary school and this was a truly humbling experience.

The players were treated as though they were the All Blacks.

As soon as we entered the school grounds the noise was deafening and the players were swamped by all of the kids.

Photos, autographs and games with the kids all led to an experience that I will never forget.

A thank you to the Heartland unions who provided balls, clothing and spare kit must be acknowledged as this was gratefully received by both schools.

The fact that we visited Nete Caucau’s old secondary school Ratu Navula and met his teachers and rugby coaches made it even more worthwhile.

Do you feel the Fijian style of play differs a lot from ours?

Yes a lot, less structured and they like to use their natural flair of running and passing at will as opposed to staying in a system.

They are physically bigger and stronger and use this to their benefit – however, they don’t seem to be able to do it for the full 80 minutes.

Do you think any other Mid Canterbury players deserved to be selected to the Heartland XV? There were other Mid Canterbury players that were part of a wider group being looked at during the season such as Will Mackenzie and Eric Duff but the competition for places was incredibly strong and all players that eventually made the NZ squad justified their selection.

Eric Duff may well have come close to selection, but made himself unavailable so in the end was not considered.

Motivation not an issue

BY GREGOR PAUL There’s a long list of things the All Blacks need to do better in Dublin than they did in Chicago and yet it’s maybe just the one thing they need to fix.

Be it their lineout woes, their indiscipline, their lack of dominance at the collision, their poor handling, erratic decision-making and needless errors, they can all be attributed to one core factor – the All Blacks had the wrong attitude in the US. Rather than thinking they played poorly, it’s better to think they just didn’t play.

Full stop.

They were passive.

They were reactive.

They were sloppy and, as Sam Cane said, there was a sense of disbelief when the players gathered earlier this week to review their work at Soldier Field.

“What sticks out about with this one [review], there was a bit of embarrassment from us when you see some of the footy,” he said.

“And you see that’s not what we are about, that’s pretty poor footy.

“There was certainly an uncomfortable feel in the room, which was good.”

Plenty of reasons have been put forward to explain why the All Blacks didn’t have the sense of urgency and dynamism they needed.

They had gone 18 tests without defeat and inevitably, some training and preparation standards had slipped.

Not noticeably, but enough to have an impact.

Head coach Steve Hansen has wondered whether heads were in the right space after spending the day before the test as part of the Cubs’ World Series celebrations.

It doesn’t really matter now.

Hansen is confident that if complacency had been in the system, it no longer is.

If minds weren’t quite on the job two weeks ago, they definitely are now.

“There are a lot of people who didn’t play a couple of weeks ago and they will be disappointed by that,” Hansen said.

“They are highly competitive athletes so their motivation will be high.

“I don’t think motivation will be a problem. Complacency certainly won’t be a problem and, attitudinally, they are in the house.

“You have just got to go out and prepare the best you can and then go on to deliver a performance you can be proud of.

“If the opposition are better than you on the day, then you have got to accept that.

“When you make 16 unforced errors out of 21, that is something you have to fix and 12 out of 12 penalties were avoidable.

“They want to kick to the corners and have driving mauls and I think they scored two tries off of that, so you are giving them what they want.

“You have to try to avoid that. We don’t have any godgiven right to

win every game of rugby but, what we do know, is that if we prepare well and our attitude is good, then we are hard to beat.”

It’s a near-enough summation to say that the specific technical faults will mostly be fixed by adopting a vastly improved mind-set.

The All Blacks aren’t suddenly riddled with faults because they didn’t play well against Ireland.

They didn’t become technically incompetent or tactically inept.

The lineout had been superb all season and then had a 40-minute malfunction without Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick.

The return of those two will go a long way to restoring order at both the set piece and c o l l i s i o n s.

opportunity to launch more effective attacks.

If there is sharper handling, then it will allow the All Blacks to play in front of the gainline, then compound the misery by attacking with momentum off second phase.

Win in the forwards and it creates time and space for the key decision-makers Aaron Smith and Beauden Barrett to wield their influence.

It’s not such a complicated business. If everyone does their core roles, whether it is the lineout, the breakdown, on attack or defence, then that should fix the performance and take it to a far better level than it was,” said Hansen.

“Whether that is good enough, we will see.

“We think he [Smith] is the best halfback in the world. You guys [Irish media] probably think Connor Murray is, so that will be how the battle goes, I suppose – who goes well enough up front.

“Halfbacks usually play well if the tight five do the job, as do loose forwards, for that matter.

“Both tight fives have to provide a platform for their halfbacks, who then allow their fiveeighths to control the game.

“In Chicago, [Johnny] Sexton and Murray controlled the game because of the platform they had from up front.

“As long as I have been watching rugby – a long time – until the day I die, that won’t change.”

McGrath thirsty for second win over ABs It was one of the lasting images from the celebratory scenes at Soldier Field – and it’s one the All Blacks are determined not to see again in Dublin.

There was Ireland’s burly loosehead prop Jack McGrath grinning from ear to ear while holding a pint of beer passed to him by a fan in the crowd.

“I’ll take that!” McGrath captioned the photo when he posted on Twitter.

The All Blacks are determined he will not get a second drink in Dublin this Sunday morning New Zealand time.

McGrath is set to start the return test in the No 1 jersey after his Chicago heroics.

“I actually didn’t grab it, some fella handed it to me,” McGrath laughed when asked how a pint managed to end up in his hands at full time at Soldier Field.

“Some fella handed it to me and I was glad to have it - I was fairly thirsty after that! It was a Heineken, but everyone in the crowd had two pints in their hand so I just took one.”

McGrath is thirsty for a second victory over the No. 1 ranked team in the world and says the Irish are fuelled by proving Chicago was no fluke.

“A lot of things happen onceoff,” he said.

“But if you do it for two in a row, that’s when people sit up and listen, and if we want to be taken seriously as an Irish team and as a nation then we have to step up on Saturday and back up what we did in Chicago.

“Probably the monkey is off our back but when you’ve a win like that you want to win again and, for us as a group, it’s an area that we feel really good about,

“Personally, I just want more and more of that.”

McGrath admitted the Irish know the All Blacks won’t be as sloppy as they were in Chicago.

“For us, we showed they’re still human, they made mistakes when they were put under pressure,” McGrath said.

“Their bread and butter is their silky skills, so this weekend their skills are going to be 10 out of 10.

“We can’t rest on our laurels and let them attack us. We’re at home, we are in front of our families.

“It is going to be an emotional day, not many people get to play the All Blacks two out of three weeks and I think it is a huge task for us. The squad that we have is well able for it.”

Cubs a distraction Coach Steve Hansen believes that some All Blacks might have been distracted ahead of the loss to Ireland in Chicago. He said it’s a possibility that some players in Chicago were more concerned with other things. “[The players were] spending a lot of time worrying about what the Cubs were doing,” says Hansen. “There were five million people at the parade and most of our blokes were there. I don’t know if it was or if it wasn’t [a contributing factor]. Is that what they normally do on a Friday before a test match?”

Black Ferns wary The Black Ferns are bracing themselves for a testing examination against England when the national women’s rugby team begin their three Test European tour. Coach Glenn Moore says England will be desperate to win at home at The Stoop Twickenham in London.

“We’ve prepared well and adjusted to the cooler temperatures but we are under no illusion that playing the English at home will be a tough assignment,” he said. Moore has opted against handing former Kiwi Ferns rep Sharnita Woodman a debut in the match.

Two weeks ago, Ireland secured their maiden win over the All Blacks following a 40-29 win in Chicago. Ward played for Munster in the only other big win for an Irish team over New Zealand, when he led his club side to a 12-0 win over the All Blacks in 1978. The commentator told Martin Devlin that Sunday’s game is ‘huge in very many ways’. “Yes the bar has been raised but also there is just as much pressure on the Ireland team as there is on the New Zealand team because if they were to underperform and are well beaten, people would say ‘well Chicago really was a freak result’.” - NZME

Stellar career all over

Black Caps find two new stars

It’s been two weeks since two-time Olympic medallist Hayden Roulston called time on his cycling career. The Tour of Southland was a fitting choice for his last race, as that was where it all began for the now 35-year-old. Guardian News & Sports Co-ordinator James Ford caught up with Roulston to discuss his memorable career and his plans for the future.

It’s been two weeks since the Tour of Southland ended, how is the time off treating you and what are you enjoying most about retirement?

It’s been pretty busy this past week to be honest.

Immediately post Southland I had a week doing nothing, just enjoying the fact that I am now retired. It’s nice waking up knowing I don’t have to do any form of cycling if I don’t want to.

But, in saying that, I won’t be sitting around doing nothing.

Exercise is now a very important part of my life and it always will be.

What made you decide that the Tour of Southland would be your last competitive race?

There was no real deciding factor. I knew the time was coming either this year or next but I put no pressure on myself as to when. I basically just woke up one day and said to my fiancé that I’m retiring at Southland and since that day I’ve been really happy I made this decision.

My career started down there and I felt it was the best place to end it there, too.

After such a successful career, what will you miss most about the sport?

I’ll miss that feeling of crossing the line with my arms in the air having won something big.

It doesn’t matter how successful this next career I have is. The fact is that unless I want to look like a complete idiot, I won’t be raising my arms in the air fist pumping ever again!

It may be hard to pick one, but what is the fondest memory of your career and why?

The Olympics is a big standout from a performance perspective.

The feelings I got winning the road nationals is also up there on the list.

But my biggest achievement

would be signing professional at a young age all by myself. I had no help, no feeder teams like today. I was living in France alone, in a French team fresh out of mum and dad’s home and could only speak English. I was so sad there when I had down times but I got through it, I won races and I signed pro. So that for me is my biggest achievement.

So many today try to sign, but they just don’t make it.

New Zealand Cycling is currently in a strong position, what do you make of the young tal-

ent that is emerging?

The talent is throughout both track and road and it’s great to see. There’s so much talent, I just hope that they all realise what they have and make the most of it. I hope they are all supported and have a clear pathway to success.

Will you remain involved in the sport in some capacity, if so, how?

Yes, I’ll always be involved. As I said before, I’m currently setting up my online training platform where I hope to coach athletes of

all abilities. I’m really excited to pass on my 15-years of experience, and see the people achieve goals they thought were once only a dream.

Finally, who inspired you throughout your career to keep on achieving and stay motivated?

That comes from myself.

Sometimes it was hard to get up and train. Sometimes I chose not to too. Professional sport is no different to a 9-to-5 job, you love some days, and you hate some days, too.

■ MOTOR RACING

Mikkelsen leads; Paddon takes wrong option Volkswagen’s quest to finish their World Rally Championship stint with a 1-2 in the drivers’ championship has got off to a perfect start at the season-ending Rally Australia.

Andreas Mikkelsen, currently ranked third in the drivers’ standings, has opened up a commanding 13.7sec lead over his nearest rival Dani Sordo after the opening five stages in Coffs Harbour on the NSW north coast.

While other drivers have strug-

gled with grip on the loose gravel early in the event, Mikkelsen has been the quickest through the first, third, fourth and fifth stages in Volkswagen’s last event in the championship.

“It’s been a very good morning,” he said.

“The pace has been comfortable. No moments.

“A good attack.”

Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville, 14 points clear of Mikkelsen in second spot in the championship, is

fifth after five stages, but 21.1 seconds back on the leader.

His New Zealand team-mate, Hayden Paddon, is third after a disastrous fourth stage cost him 12.6 seconds on Mikkelsen.

Still a chance of claiming second in the title race as well, Paddon took a risk on the 10.49km stage by taking on a mixed strategy three soft tyres and one hard.

However it didn’t pay off when he half-spun four times.

“The balance was completely

wrong,” he said. “We went full sideways and had to come out of the throttle and wait for the car to come back.

“That wasn’t the main time loss but the rest of it was just in the driving and the car.”

Meanwhile it hasn’t been all plain sailing for Volkswagen.

Four-time drivers’ champion Sebastien Ogier, who has already wrapped up this year’s title, is fourth and 20.1 seconds off the pace.

Unheralded medium pacer Colin de Grandhomme rewrote the New Zealand test record books with a spectacular debut performance against Pakistan at Hagley Oval yesterday.

The Auckland allrounder took six for 41 from 15.5 overs to rip through Pakistan and dismiss them for 133.

Pakistan scrapped hard though, recognising helpful conditions for the seamers, but at stumps New Zealand, chasing what would be just their ninth test win in 54 tests against them, and first at home for 31 years, were 104 for three, 29 runs adrift.

Left armer Mohammad Amir got opener Tom Latham lbw; then Sohail Khan grabbed the key wicket of New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, fending a catch to first slip; and Ross Taylor was caught down the legside by wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed off lively Rahat Ali. However opener Jeet Raval, also on debut, had reached an impressive 55 and fellow lefthander Henry Nicholls was on 29, the stand worth 64.

But the day belonged to de Grandhomme, the Harare-born 30-year-old, who left Zimbabwe 10 years ago in search of a better cricket life, having been an under 19 international at the 2003-04 World Cup. Pushing the ball up and getting swing and seam off the green pitch at strictly medium pace, had three wickets in his first seven overs to slice through Pakistan in the morning session.

He was on hand at the death, removing Rahat to complete the best figures on debut for any New Zealand bowler.

Only eight have taken five or more wickets first up in a test, the most recent being Doug Bracewell against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in 2011-12.

Only Pakistan’s captain Misbah-ul-Haq lasted long in testing conditions, getting to 31 in the course of a 161-minute stay.

Pakistan lost five for 32 in 16.4 overs in the second session to remove any chance of a post-lunch revival.

De Grandhomme has played one ODI and four T20s, but none since 2012, and has long had a reputation as a tidy bowler and a batsman capable of murderous hitting.

He’s won his place on the back of a more mature batting approach, and good form, notably a match-winning century against Otago in the Plunket Shield at the start of this month.

He has taken 123 first-class wickets in 83 games at 30.18 before yesterday. His batting average is 35.9, including 10 centuries, so he had some credentials for a call-up, getting the nod ahead of the allround alternative, Jimmy Neesham.

Role models all around us James Ford

I

t’s something that’s discussed across the country and around the globe when a respected sportsperson behaves in a way in which the adoring public deem inappropriate.

Are high profile sportspeople role models?

This question was brought back into the limelight in the Motherland after England football captain Wayne Rooney decided to join a wedding party, flanked by some team-mates, and drink himself into a stupor.

With his lips tainted by red wine and his eyes bleary, the 31-year-old happily obliged to have his photo taken with his fellow wedding revellers.

Rooney was quickly accused on social media of setting a bad example.

It reminded me of past behaviour we’ve witnessed across the sports world.

We are captivated by sportspeople because they can do what we can’t.

What we dreamt of one day achieving when we first laced up our boots, gloves or pads in whichever sport attracted us most.

But with that adulation, comes responsibility – apparently.

Most people can easily fire off a list of sportspeople that have fallen short of what we expect.

From Aaron Smith’s bathroom tryst to Rooney’s latest booze binge, Andre Agassi’s admission of taking crystal meth and Mike Tyson’s boxing bite.

There are far, far too many to even think of compiling a list.

We feel oddly let down every time, but why?

These people owe us nothing.

Just because their professions attract glamour and in return offer pay slips, the majority can only imagine, doesn’t make them a measuring stick for what’s right.

Smith copped a ban while there is talk of Rooney being stripped of his captaincy.

Their codes react with a heavy hand to seemingly appease the baying public.

But what we must remember is there are better and more important role models all around us.

In every profession there are countless people that conduct themselves in a manner that makes them perfect role models.

We hang our hat on sports people setting the right example to our children.

But youngsters should be encouraged to emulate those closer to home, who deserve their respect as much, if not more.

Ultimately, sports people will always be looked up to and labelled as role models.

But we should make sure they’re not the only ones.

elcome to the future.

The year is 2026 and President Archdeacon Bishop Brian ‘Can’t-Touch-This’ Tamaki is well into his second term in office.

Wellington is no longer the capital due to a massive quake that sunk the foreshore resulting in Te Papa floating across to the Hutt Valley.

Christchurch has been renamed Sin Bin City by President Tamaki as it had a gay aftershock in 2019 and all lesbian, gay, transgender and those who aren’t sure have to live there.

In 2021 there was an uprising when residents in Merivale painted their recycling bins rainbow colours.

President Tamaki ordered their destruction, quoting Genesis 9:13 when the big guy upstairs sent a rainbow as a sign of a covenant between him and Brian, and no-one else can use the rainbow.

All schools now have a picture of the president and they all sing the well-known national hymn God Defend Destiny Church before watching a two-and-ahalf hour Skype of the ‘Bossman Brian’ (his affectionate nickname amongst the nation), sermonising on the reason why rivers flood is because left-handed people have made God cry.

Yip, our poor yankee doodle cousins were thinking the same thing a couple of Tuesdays ago until Hurricane Hillary turned out to be Clueless Clinton, as she got wiped off the voting map by The Big Don. You see, Brian and his band of merry followers have already had a go at expanding their empire,

so it is no stretch of the imagination to have the congregation in the situation of being a political organisation ruling the nation.

Twice now, Destiny Church has applied for and been rejected, as a charter school. Had they been accepted, they would qualify for a big dollop of your tax. Guaranteed they will keep trying until they get it.

Nice to know that this self-proclaimed bishop would use your taxes to bring up a generation of Bible-bashing scholars believing that lesbians cause landslides and transvestites are the reason the Pink and White Terraces disappeared.

There is current legislation that

allows fruit loop fringe fraternities like Destiny Church to have a slice of the tax pie. It’s called Charter Schools, a one-MP party deal stitched up with National so that the current prime minister could remain in power.

A current poll (November 4, 2016) puts the Act Party on 0.5 per cent support! Read that again my over-taxed working friend.

Act has only half of a per cent support in this country, yet they got into power as a puppet of the National Government, and heralded the legislation that allows Brian to keep asking for your taxes.

So my picture of the future is not that off the mark.

Key will be defeated by a popular uprising of Tamaki supporters wearing Enough Is Enough shirts.

The national curriculum will change for schools and we will all learn how tectonic plates under New Zealand move around because 147 confused teenagers in Eketahuna declared themselves asexual.

How prepared are you for life’s earthquakes?

T

he past 10 days or so have seen two massive earthquakes and the resulting aftershocks.

Obviously, one of these quakes was the massive 7.5 magnitude at 12.02am on Monday in the North Canterbury, Marlborough and Wellington areas.

The second one was thousands of kilometres away in the US, as Donald Trump won the presidential election against most predictions.

Both of these events have arrived with many aftershocks and a lot of concern for the future.

Now before you think I’m going to get political on the second

of these “earthquakes”, let me assure you that I want to address our readiness for these “life earthquakes” and aftershocks.

Using these two events to address our own personal preparedness for the large events of life which can come from out of nowhere and disturb our sense of wellbeing, is essential.

On a practical level we’ve been reminded continuously to have our own survival kits ready,

particularly since the Canterbury quakes of recent years.

How well have you done with that one?

With a massive earthquake or other disaster we must be prepared to cope ourselves for at least three days and hopefully able to be part of helping others and not be a burden on the system, overloading it at the expense of those who really need help.

I don’t know how you prepare for the shock of a major expectation not going your way. But obviously many in the US had no coping mechanism for what has happened.

Just look at their subsequent behaviour! Riots, protests and tantrums, because they didn’t get their way, are all inappropriate responses.

The “life earthquakes” which inevitably come, do shake us. But how we prepare for and respond to them has some hope.

The apostle Paul certainly went through his share of earthquakes, both natural and man-made.

He survived and prospered through them all because he had an “anchor for his soul” (Hebrews 6:19).

The person of Jesus Christ had become his personal survival kit and anchor for everything life

could throw at him. How about you?

As we consider the trauma and struggles of our neighbours further north, let’s ensure that our own survival kit is ready for the natural earthquakes and take up the offer of a rock to stand on, this “anchor for the soul”.

It’s found not in the Yellow Pages, but in the promises of God’s word.

A personal relationship with Him through Jesus Christ, brings peace, security and a confidence to live boldly through every “life earthquake”.

NZ trade future not all doom New Zealand’s trade relationship with the US may now be up in the air, but business leaders around the world are telling a story that could be good news for our exporters, finance firm PwC says.

The company has just released its survey of 1100 CEOs from the 21 Apec economies in the lead-up to the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit in Lima this week.

It found in the long-term 69 per cent of increased business investment is expected to stay within Apec countries, with China, the US, Singapore and Indonesia set to attract the most.

Over half of the businesses in the survey also said they planned to increase their overseas investment, despite report-

ing concerns about the broader economic outlook and disappointment with progress on free trade.

PwC Treasury Advisory’s Roger Kerr said while New Zealand’s trade relationship with the US was now up in the air following November’s presidential election, exporters faced higher risk, the survey showed consequences could be less serious than believed.

“Early indications are that trade policies will suffer from a more inwards looking Trump administration and New Zealand businesses exporting to the US will want to watch this space very carefully,” he said. “However, I wouldn’t worry too much just yet. To put our current growth prospects into perspective, the

Global budget proposal scrapped Education Minister Hekia Parata has scrapped her controversial global budget funding proposal for schools.

She says the sector isn’t ready for it and the cabinet has agreed it shouldn’t go ahead.

Teacher unions, which said it was the same as bulk funding, have welcomed the decision but the Green Party says hypertargeting misses the point.

The global budget proposal was part of a wider review that’s under way and was designed to give principals more control over the way they spend their allocations.

They would have been able to choose between paying for teachers or using money to benefit their schools in other ways.

Ms Parata says feedback showed the sector wasn’t ready for “the level of flexibility and accountability” that came with global budgets.

“I have therefore recommended, and cabinet has agreed, that the global budget proposal not proceed,” she said yesterday.

Hekia Parata Primary and secondary teacher unions praised the decision.

“Taking bulk funding off the table is a big win for public educa-

tion,” the NZEI and PPTA said in a joint statement.

Ms Parata says the ongoing review into the way schools are funded will centre on the progress and achievement of children.

“The current education funding system is too complicated and we have poor line of sight from the investment our government makes in education to how well kids do,” she said.

“There is strong support in the sector and the wider public for a better way of funding schools and replacing the blunt decile system with a mechanism that delivers funding to where it is most needed.”

But Green Party education spokeswoman Catherine Delahunty says hyper-targeted funding would miss students who need extra help.

“Maori and Pasifika kids miss out because of poverty and a lack of cultural responsiveness in schools, yet this new model does not acknowledge this at all,” she said.

The Government will contribute at least $5 million in primary sector support to those affected by the Kaikoura earthquake and its aftershocks, Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy said.

The package is made up of $4 million for Mayoral Disaster Rural Relief funds in Hurunui, Kaikoura and Marlborough districts to help with non-insurable assets such as tracks, on-farm bridges and water infrastructure, Guy said.

Kiwi in huge drug bust Eight people, including one New Zealander have been arrested in a massive drug smuggling bust of $54 million worth of liquid meth found on a boat on a northern Sydney beach.

About 90 litres of liquid methamphetamine was found onboard the boat as it arrived at Palm Beach in the early hours of the morning last Friday.

Australian Federal Police arrested the three Chinese men – aged 47, 49 and 58 – who were onboard, as well as a 29-yearold New Zealand man and a 56-year-old man from Taiwan who met the boat onshore, the Daily Mail reports.

All five men have been charged with the importation and possession of a commercial quantity of border-controlled drugs and faced court last Friday.

Three other Chinese men – aged 23, 51 and 56 – were then arrested on Sunday after a fishing boat was intercepted off the coast of Hervey Bay, Queensland.

They were all charged with aiding and abetting the importation of a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug.

All eight men have been refused bail.

Further forensic testing will be conducted to determine the exact weight and purity of the substance, AFP said in a statement.

Man dissolves in Yellowstone Park hot pool A man has dissolved in an acidic hot pool in Yellowstone National Park after falling in, according to reports.

Colin Nathaniel Scott of Portland, Oregon, and his sister had been hiking near the Norris Geyser on June 7 last year, Montanabased news organisation Kurl8 reported.

They strayed from the main path in order to find a hot pool to soak in, which is a prohibited activity in the park.

The official incident report quotes the sister as saying that her brother was “reaching down to check the temperature of a hot spring they found when he

slipped and fell into the pool”.

Search and rescue rangers arrived and found the victim’s body but a lightning storm delayed recovery efforts.

The next day they could not find the remains.

“In a very short order, there was a significant amount of dissolving,” said Deputy Chief Ranger Lorant Veress.

“There’s a closure in place to keep people from doing that for their own safety and also to protect the resources because they are very fragile. But, most importantly, for the safety of people because it’s a very unforgiving environment.”
