The EA Networks Centre complex could be set to expand with the addition of a library, if the youth of Ashburton have their way. Representatives from 11 schools, as well as the Youth Council, spoke to Ashburton District councillors yesterday on their vision for the future of the Ashburton Public Library during a Young Persons’ Forum. Amongst other things, students talked about the location, technological capabilities and layout of the library. Representatives from Mt Somers Springburn School offered up a rural perspective and outlined the fact that families from the wider Mid Canterbury area utilised the Ashburton library differently to people who lived in town.
Kate Ahearn, Jasmine Sturm and Ryan Hill said rural families tended to go to the library less frequently, but stay for longer periods of time. To make trips to town more worthwhile, the school pupils suggested encompassing the library facilities into the newly-built EA Networks Centre as a “one-stop centre”. “Busy families can access swimming, the stadium and the library,” the students said. “And there’s already parking, a gym and a café.” Another way to cater for rural schools was to implement a mobile library service – an idea favoured by the majority of the groups. The students floated the idea of a mobile van going to schools, preschools, resthomes and community events, in-
cluding Boulevard Day and A&P shows. Indoor-outdoor flow was another idea touched on by all groups with the addition of an outdoor reading area and playground well received by all councillors. An upgrade of technology should also be on the cards with the inclusion of iPads, tablets, E-Books and Kindles available for all library patrons, as well as a self-service book check-out option, they said. Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay congratulated the students on their efforts and credited their well thought-out and well-researched presentations.
