The strength of the Ashburton District’s economy means many of those out of work when the Silver Fern Farms Fairton plant closes could be saved, says Canterbury Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend. And that could see the impact of the 370 lost jobs diluted far more than it would be in a less affluent area, he said. “The trick right now is how we can work as a community to minimise the impact. Many of those out of work were highly skilled in their field and the skills they’ve learned would be easily transferred to smaller processing plants,” he

said. Silver Fern Farms has indicated more than 200 jobs could be available at its Pareora, Belfast and Hokitika plants, but there would be staff who did not wish to travel or relocate, Townsend said. There was no formula to measure the impact on the economy of the job losses because there were so many variables in the equation – the seasonal nature of those jobs and the fact that work hours had declined in recent years, Townsend said. In addition to staff, the closure would also impact on a range of businesses that provided services to the plant, but if any district was well placed to deal with extra workers it was Ashburton, he said.

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel was equally optimistic about the employment prospects for Silver Fern staff saying there were a number of employment opportunities with new developments at the Ashburton Business Estate, the town’s new Countdown supermarket and in the rural sector. With the district’s low unemployment, businesses across the board were forced to bring in labour from outside the district to fill jobs and that meant there were opportunities out there, she said.

Government ministers must hold the Overseas Investment Office (OIO) to account, says Labour in the wake of Silver Fern Farms’ proposal to close its Fairton plant. The opposition party’s regional development spokesman Stuart Nash was among politicians weighing in on the threatened closure. Nash was referring to the OIO’s recommendation last year approving Shanghai Maling’s purchase of half of Silver Fern Farms. “The Government said the sale would add value, and Shanghai Maling promised as much in its OIO application, but the company is breaking promises and closing down Fairton before the ink is even dry on the contract,” Nash said. “Ministers must hold the OIO to account and demand they ensure this investor meets its promises,” he said. New Zealand First was also quick to condemn the announcement. Leader Winston Peters said Silver Fern Farms managers were “cowardly” for last year denying closure was a prospect, and the announcement rammed home the price of the meat processing industry slipping into foreign control. But Labour’s outcry earned the accusation of “crocodile tears” from Rangitata candi-

date for National, Andrew Falloon. “Two years ago the Labour Party endorsed a meat industry proposal that specified the closure of Fairton as one of the key recommendations, so it’s bit rich to now try and say they oppose it, it’s crocodile tears from the Labour Party,” Falloon said. Falloon and incumbent National MP for Rangitata Jo Goodhew said the decision had not come as a huge surprise due to declining sheep numbers. While it was a very tough day for the workers and they felt for affected staff, they were heartened by positions available at Pareora and Belfast works, and a strong economy and historic low unemployment would help ensure there were other jobs available. In addition Goodhew said social sector agencies would be lining up to make themselves available. Labour’s Rangitata candidate Jo Luxton backed up Nash’s call, and was also thinking about getting support into place for workers. “This is a massive blow for Ashburton,” Luxton said. A lot of the workers had little in the way of assets to fall back on, and community support would be important. She had contacted the manager of Work and Income requesting a meeting to see what the organisation’s support might look like.

A secretive ride awaits those who take part in the Ashburton Motorcycle Club’s magical mystery motorcycle tour on Saturday. Organiser Hayden Tasker said the tour will see the participants visiting three businesses around Mid Canterbury that have spon-

sored the event. At each stop, riders will have a card that they will need to get stamped, if they get all three stamped, they will be put in the draw for a prize. “We started the event three years ago when we had our centenary and have kept running it as part of Wheels Week since,” he said.

“It hasn’t been the biggest event in the past but we have had a lot of interest so far so now we just have to hope the weather is good.” Entrants are asked to meet at the Hotel Ashburton carpark at 9.30am with the intention of leaving at 10.30am. The entrance fee is $10 with prizes available.

The people who see this closure as an opportunity will thrive.” Most of those who will lose their jobs will be entitled to a redundancy pay out and this was confirmed by Silver Fern Farms chief executive Dean Hamilton. “Should the proposal be confirmed, all redundancies will be paid as per the collective and individual agreements between the company and our people on the site. The collective agreement redundancy is based on years of continuous service,” he said. ployees were now being looked at. “The type of support we may provide is yet to be confirmed, however when an organisation is affected by redundancies our focus is to provide information about financial assistance, process benefit applications and connect those affected with other job seeking or training opportunities,” he said. Redundancy payments were not included in determining the date employment ceased but would be considered in determining a client’s average weekly income for standdown purposes. Redundancy payments would also be regarded as a cash asset and could affect a client’s eligibility for supplementary assistance, Carter said.

Two men, two jobs and 78 years of experience disappeared in just two words – Fairton’s closing. For Graham Barker, 41 years in the freezers and Delma Rutherfurd 38 years as a shepherd, the closure of the plant has been sweetened by a redundancy payout. They say they, and their fellow ‘older’ workers are the lucky ones, the closure has simply provided the push they needed to retire. And they’re not alone, Barker said. “There are quite a few of us, we’ve been looking for redundancy for ages,” he said. According to a schedule posted on Fairton Freezing Workers Facebook page an employee with 27 years plus service can expect a redundancy package of around $60,000 – less tax; 10 years’ service will give you $22,477. Like the rest of the 370 people now out of work, the announcement on Wednesday that the processing plant would close wasn’t a surprise to the two men. It was one of the world’s worst kept secrets, Rutherfurd said. “They’ve lied and bullshitted us for years; they’ve kept us in the dark for years.”

They reckon there was even a suggestion back in the 2007-2008

season that the plant was being eyed up by a vegetable processing company. That didn’t come to anything, but the rumours persisted. Then there was the water bottling plant rumour. That hasn’t panned out – yet, they said. “Basically they’ve just lied to us for years.”

“When the bobby calf kill went that was the day were knew we were gone,” Barker said. The plant’s bobby kill initially extended the season for workers but for several seasons they were put under pressure to cut deals on hours, conditions and pay rates to keep the work but in 2015 the work moved to Pareora.

Cloud cleared yesterday to reveal a white Mt Hutt, and ski area managers were pleased with five to 10 centimetres of new snow. Manager James McKenzie said he was expecting another five to 10 centimetres over the weekend. “And it’s staying really cold which is good, it means we can smash it on the snowmaking,” McKenzie said. Peeping Tom jailed A man who secretly recorded women undressing and couples having sex has reportedly been jailed. Moana Tekawa, a 48-yearold father-of-three, had been dubbed the “Grey Lynn peeping Tom”. He was sentenced yesterday at the Auckland District Court to three years and six months in prison. Plenty of fixes for pool complaints By Sue NewmaN

User satisfaction with Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre might have plummeted 11 per cent in a recent district residents’ survey, but its manager Steve Prescott is confident a fix is in hand that will reverse that rating next year. The single biggest complaint made by 66 per cent of people in the Ashburton District Council survey was around summer temperatures. The small size of the pool complex attracted another 18 per cent

of complaints. Prescott is not fazed. The pool temperature issue is already being dealt with and an extension of the pool complex could be achieved if there was a ratepayer will to foot the bill, he says. “The end walls can be taken out and extended at any time.” Some respondents were thinking big – “council was thinking too small when it came to this centre; it should have been constructed as a facility that was foremost in its field … aware that finance is limited but think about

installing unique attractions as time marches on …” There were several complaints about the size of the main pool – 25 metres instead of 50 metres and many respondents still said a hydroslide should be added. The major complaint, overheating in the pool during summer months will disappear next summer when cooling units are installed, Prescott said. “I’m not really disappointed to see those comments. I knew that closing the facility on hot days would cause public outrage and

I totally understand that but if we hadn’t closed it, the problems would have been on-going. The point had to be made. We want people to have a pleasant experience. “It’s a fantastic facility and we should be able to use it all day, every day.” The high level of public complaints about pool temperature prompted the council to sign off funds in next year’s budget for cooling units. Work on this project will begin from July 1 and Prescott is confi-

dent the units will be in place by summer. In terms of the size of the complex, the building had been constructed to allow for an extension at either end and this could see additional covered courts at one end and an additional pool at the other. “We already punch above our weight but in terms of size we need to look long term. It’s about looking at ways to increase revenue flows to lessen the burden on ratepayers, but there will always be a capital cost,” he said.

Wheels Week rolls into school On Wednesday, students at the Ashburton Christian School took a break from their normal studies for a wheel-based day of activities. The day began with older students leading the younger stu-

dents through lessons around all things wheels, before students with dirt bikes had the chance to ride them around the school field. After a sausage sizzle lunch, a collection of about 15 sports and

classic cars arrived for the students to inspect. The day is primarily organised by the senior Year 9 and 10 students of the school and is said to be eagerly awaited by all.

Ashburton police senior sergeant Scott Banfield has applauded an initiative by Canterbury Police to focus on school truants as a way of reducing opportunities for youth offenders to commit crimes. While this would see police conducting patrols in areas known as hangouts for teenagers skipping class, much of what the wider project would be doing was already under way in Ashburton, Banfield said. “Locally we have one youth aid officer who from time to time focuses on truancy and police staff for some weeks now have visited the college (Ashburton College) and conducted foot patrols as part of their ‘business as usual’. “This isn’t because there have been issues at the school but as a way of having a policing presence in an area where there are 1100 members of our community meeting every day,” he said.

The national truancy strategy was aimed at metropolitan areas where there were significant truancy issues. Those areas also had greater resources to put into this type of tactic, Banfield said. Canterbury East community services manager senior sergeant Stephen McDaniel said that while there were many factors that could contribute to a child wanting to skip school other than just a general disinterest, parents and guardians had a responsibility to ensure their children attended school regularly. “All parents need to be aware of the link between truancy and youths being offenders or victims of crime,” he said. For the college, principal Ross Preece said the casual police presence at school was a welcome one as it was a positive way to help students feel comfortable around the police. The school visits were a police initiative, he said.

Ashburton accountancy firm Gabites Ltd has a new outlook on town, from the first floor of a refurbished building that is leading the resurrection of the central business district. Their 1960s building on the corner of Cass and Tancred Street has been gutted to its bare bones and rebuilt stronger, to 100 per cent earthquake code, in a multimillion dollar refit. Gabites moved into the top floor late March, Heartland Bank is occupying upstairs and downstairs space while its own East Street premises is earthquake strengthened and refurbished, and insurance brokers Crombie Lockwood has opened on the downstairs corner. The rest of the ground floor is being advertised as retail or office space. Next door, on the old Smallbones site, earthworks are beginning for the construction of another office and retail building. Gabites director Eric Parr said the new buildings would complement the Eastfields Complex planned across the road on Cass Street. Gabites, with a staff of 40, are enjoying the modern facilities after more than 50 years in a 110-year-old building on Burnett Street, opposite ATS. The old building, added on to over the years as the business grew, had suffered in the quakes and a decision was made to relocate to a modern, full-strength building, he said. The new space is warm, airy and staff work in open plan office space. Directors and associates have offices and there is also a board room, several private rooms to meet with clients and a modern tearoom for staff. Parr said while it was business as usual and while the old building had plenty of history, the firm was looking to the future. Gabites was founded by Ron Gabites 52 years ago and he was joined later by the late Neil Sinclair; the pair grew the practice

Dead boy’s family wants charges laid

High rise fire under control Scores of firefighters have put out a fire on the roof of an Auckland CBD high rise which may have started during construction taking place on the building. Passers-by were seen gathering and gazing up at smoke billowing from the top of the building while police controlled the scene. The roof fire – believed to have started after an explosion during demolition works – has been extinguished. Fire communications shift manager Dallas Ramsay said about 50 firefighters attended the incident at the corner of Mayoral Drive and Queen St. “We received a notification of a fire just after 3pm. “The fire itself is contained to a large metal box on top of the building, the building is possibly under construction.” She was not able to confirm if anyone was in the building. Fire crews were trying to get water up to the roof to put it out earlier yesterday afternoon. The former office building is owned by Russell Property Group, which is planning to convert it

into a 250-room hotel. The former office block is being converted into a new Four Points by Sheraton hotel, expected to open this year. Russell Property Group owner Brett Russell said a demolition subcontractor had been working in the plant room on top of the roof when the fire started. “From what I believe the demolition guys were cutting something on top of the roof and what they were cutting had a small explosion. “We’re not sure what caused it, they’re investigating it now. The fire brigade’s there and everybody’s safe,” he said. Strong winds are probably making the fire look worse than it is, he said. “From what I’ve been told, it’s contained on the roof at the plant room. Nobody was hurt, and they think it’s under control.” The hotel is still under construction and has no occupants. The company’s partners Dominion Constructors is managing the build but its staff were not involved in the incident.

Gang associate forced to apologise to judge A man arrested for contempt of court when a gang member appeared on a murder charge in Whangarei District Court has been released after saying sorry to the judge. As 55-year-old Black Power gang member Walter Ngaau was led into the dock yesterday, flanked by two police officers, he pumped his clenched fist into the air. A man sitting in the front row responded with a fist pump. Judge Keith de Ridder was

quick to respond to the disruption and ordered the man be removed from the court. As the man was leaving he pumped his fist again and yelled an obscenity. The judge said the man was in contempt of court and should be arrested. As the case concluded and Ngaau left the dock to be taken downstairs to the holding cells, there was an outburst by his supporters. A man yelled in the judge’s di-

rection “**** you” as he threw both clenched fists into the air. Both men who yelled were placed in court cells – the second man to yell was released. The first man to yell out was held through the lunch break and appeared in court again where he apologised to the Judge. “Yeah sorry judge for my actions this morning. I wasn’t meant to disrespect anyone in this court,” he said. Judge de Ridder accepted the apology and allowed the man

to be released. Ngaau, of Morningside in Whangarei, appeared in court jointly charged – with Nicky Dodd and his brother Adam Dodd – of murdering John Henry Harris on October 18, last year. John Henry Harris, a 37-yearold Tribesman gang member, known as John Boy, died after being dropped off at Whangarei St John Ambulance Station early on October 18 last year with a gunshot wound. - NZME

The family of a schoolboy who died after a violent assault at rugby training is calling for a manslaughter charge to be laid after the Coroner ruled the actions of another teen was “the most significant factor” in his death. Stephen Eruwera Dudley died on June 6, 2013 after he was punched repeatedly by two teenage brothers at a West Auckland rugby field. Stephen, 15, suffered cardiac arrhythmia during the assault and was rushed to Auckland City Hospital. Despite frantic attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead on arrival. The brothers were initially charged with manslaughter. But after medical examinations revealed an undiagnosed heart condition, the Crown withdrew the charge – saying it could not be determined whether the assault contributed to Stephen’s death. In 2014 the brothers pleaded guilty to assaulting Stephen and were discharged without conviction and granted name permanent suppression. Last year, just after third anniversary of Stephen’s death Coroner Gordon Matenga held an inquest. Yesterday he released his report, and found that while Stephen may have had an underlying heart condition, his death was the direct result of “stress associated with physical assault”. Lawyer Nikki Pender, who represents the Dudley family, welcomed the inquest findings. “Finally, someone independent has looked at all the evidence and given them answers as to what happened the day Stephen died,” she said. “The Dudley family will be asking the Solicitor-General to review this case in light of the Coroner’s findings with the aim of laying a manslaughter charge.” - NZME

Fairton job cuts will hurt Michelle Nelson

A

ssuming Mid Canterbury has the capacity to absorb more than 300 workers made redundant by Silver Fern Farms’ decision to close its Fairton plant is more than optimistic. As the news sunk in on Wednesday, Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel told media outlets she was confident the ousted workers would find other employment in the district, noting the low unemployment rate. Favel pointed out that Countdown was soon to open a new supermarket in the town which could provide employment options for the redundant meat workers. Seriously? Aside from the fact the supermarket chain has already recruited and trained a full contingent of staff ahead of next month’s opening, many of the skills required to process meat are not necessarily transferable to customer service or stock control. Butchers perhaps, but as mentioned, Countdown has its staff organised and ready to go. Silver Fern Farms has committed to assisting its former workforce. Apparently more than 200 jobs will be available at the company’s Pareora, Belfast and Hokitika operations. That might be an option for couples or single people. But relocating is an expensive business where families are concerned. Apart from the costs of moving household items, connecting services and associated expenses, new schools mean shelling out for new uniforms – the list is endless. Then there’s the social costs of moving away from the support of family and/or friends. This can be equally as hard on children and adults, but teenagers in particular struggle. And given what took place this week at Fairton, no-one could blame meatworkers if they were leery about Silver Fern’s offer. After all, who’s to say they won’t be shuffled off somewhere else in a year or so? The Fairton plant has also provided well-paying holiday jobs to tertiary students for many years – those too will have gone by the wayside. There’s no doubt some of the Fairton crew will be absorbed into the local economy, but there’s also no doubt others will suffer, as will the collective coffers.

his week I want to congratulate the Ashburton Trotting Club committee members for thinking outside the box, or oval in their case. The members I have spoken to recently are pretty fizzed up about this year’s Harness Jewels. Once again, on the track they will attract the best horses from all over the country and across the Tasman. But they haven’t stopped there. They have a few more tricks up their sleeves this year to make the day more of a spectacle. For starters they want to skydive Trackside presenter Mick Guerin into the middle of the track before the first race. Hopefully the weather holds as well as Mick’s bottle. I would love to see commentator Mark McNamara and a few of the leading drivers arrive in the same fashion, but getting them to agree to that on such an important day (big pay day) would be like pushing horse s%#t up a hill. Talking about the leading drivers in the country, you could be sitting beside one of them in a race on Jewels day. Not one of the big races, but I’m sure it would feel like it. The trotting club has an auction running now for a dual sulky drive on Jewels day. The winner of this auction will choose Ricky May, Dexter Dunn or Blair Orange to sit beside them in a three-horse race. For those who haven’t experienced sitting behind a pacer in full flight, it is an awesome experience. I have been lucky enough to have sat behind a few on my own as well as in a dual sulky. One day I asked a former trainer of our syndicate, Dale Forbes, that if I turned up regularly on a Saturday morning and shovelled some of that stuff we were pushing up a hill earlier, for a few weeks would he let me have a steer of a horse eventually. Dale is a man of few words. I remember when one of our nags was having its first start on a grass track, I asked him how he thought it would handle the

grass, he replied, “Well he likes eating it.” Anyway, he said “Yep ok” to my proposition. After a couple of weeks of fronting up, shovelling and learning how to gear up etc he said out of the blue, “Righto you can have a crack behind that one.” After a couple more weeks of jogging up, I graduated to ‘fast work’ which was a huge buzz. The power that huge arse in front of you generates is very impressive! I must admit it didn’t give me quite the adrenaline rush that the dual sulky experience did. It was a radio promo we did years ago with local workplace bosses, who had to complete a challenge to win a bar tab for their staff. Tony Argyle (then owner of Ro-

billiards) and I raced each other in the dual sulkies at Lindsay Kerslake’s Horsepower Experience. Lindsay was Tony’s pilot and Kenny Lynn was mine. We did the race live on air with a hands-free cellphone, which on reflection wasn’t the best idea. Kenny was pretty determined to win that particular day and we hopped out to the lead. At the top of the track there were a few shadows from nearby trees and our horse decided jumping those, while in full flight would be a good plan. He nearly fell flat on his nose! Instead of taking hold of the horse a bit, Kenny decided attack was the best form of defence in this instance and gave the horse a strop-up with the

reins, coupled with some words of encouragement. Had we been recording the race, we would have bleeped those particular words of encouragement out. I think our horse had some hearing issues, as he tried to do the same on the second lap as well. This time Kenny made sure the horse and all the listeners at the time got his pep talk, loud and clear! For the record Tony got up on the line by about a head and secured the tab for his staff and I’m pretty sure I joined them for a couple, just to settle the nerves! Would I do it again? In a heartbeat. The best fun you can have with your pants on and as of lunchtime yesterday, the auction was sitting at $236. A bargain for the thrill of a lifetime! Ex-FBI boss leads inquiry Former FBI Director Robert Mueller was given sweeping power yesterday to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign, with a broad mandate that could encompass any questionable actions of President Donald Trump’s associates and possibly even the circumstances of last week’s abrupt firing of James Comey. The Justice Department’s appointment of Mueller as a special counsel is an acknowledgment of growing public demands to place the politically charged inquiry into the hands of an outside investigator with bipartisan respect. It follows weeks of questions about the Justice Department’s independence from the White House and comes two months after Attorney General Jeff Sessions had to recuse himself because of his own undisclosed Russian contacts during the campaign. “I accept this responsibility and will discharge it to the best of my ability,” Mueller said in a statement. In a statement released by the White House, Trump said: “As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know

Ed Sheeran says he’s “overwhelmed” and “humbled” by demand for his New Zealand tour, which has ballooned from two stadium shows to five. The 26-yearold will perform three dates at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland, and two at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, in March next year. Sheeran announced just the two shows to start with – one in each city – but pre-sale demand on Tuesday saw him add three more shows. Sheeran has also added new dates in Australia. Princess turns her back on status for love

Jay Z and Beyonce are a billion-dollar couple – according to one estimate. Forbes puts the combined wealth of the married superstars at $US1.16 billion ($NZ1.67b). The magazine estimates Jay Z’s fortune at $US810 million ($NZ1.2b). It says Beyonce has amassed $NZ350 million ($NZ505m). Forbes says most of Jay Z’s money is involved in Roc Nation and his other companies. Both the rapper and the singer also have a significant stake in the Tidal streaming music service. The couple has a 5-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy. Beyonce is pregnant with twins.

A member of Japan’s royal family, Princess Mako, is to surrender her royal status by marrying a commoner. The 25-year-old eldest granddaughter of Emperor Akihito will become engaged to law firm worker Kei Komuro, also 25, whom she met while studying together. Japan’s imperial law requires a princess to leave the royal family after marrying a commoner. The move, first reported by local media, is expected to reignite debate on the evershrinking royal family. Princess Mako and Kei Komuro met in 2012 when they studied at the International Christian University in Tokyo. He once worked as “Prince of the Sea”, promoting tour-

Closer to home, the latest Global Dairy Trade auction reported a fifth consecutive increase to the headline price. This has sent the average dairy price to its highest level since December last year. The 3.2 per cent increase was well ahead of expectations and has sparked talks that Fonterra may increase the current season’s payout ratio from the current $6.00 per kilo of milksolids. a boost to its share price this week after it was announced that Australian rival ResMed had withdrawn its complaint to the International Trade Commission. The share price subsequently rose 1.7 per cent. The withdrawal of this complaint, however, does not impact the patent litigation proceedings that are due to be held in the US, UK, Germany and New Zealand. The Australian labour force survey was much better than expected showing that the economy added 37,400 jobs in April. Expectations were only expecting a 5000 increase in jobs. This comes on the back of the exceptional strong March figure of 60,000 (revised lower from 60,900). The unemployment rate fell from 5.9 to 5.7 for the month and it is now equal with January’s reading. More part-time roles were created this month, while there were fewer fulltime jobs available. The Australian dollar gained following the announcement. Next week, New Zealanders will be looking toward the 2017 Budget, the first with Bill English as the Prime Minister and Stephen Joyce as finance minister. There is an expectation that there will be something for housing in the budget in addition to the social and infrastructure spending that has already been announced.

The market week in review he week started on a reasonably positive note for global markets with the FTSE 100 in the UK registering a fresh record close, as did the S&P500 and the Nasdaq Composite indices in the US. However, the good times came to an abrupt end, as US politics became front of mind for investors, as the unpredictable President Trump came under fire. The political storm in the US began when President Donald unexpectedly fired James Comey, director of the FBI, citing that he dealt with the Hilary Clinton investigation inappropriately. Since then accusations of leaked information and interference into FBI investigations by the president have spiralled, with some parties calling for a special investigation and at worst an impeachment. To begin with, markets had a fairly muted reaction to the developments, however, when further allegations came to light, US markets all reported severe single day losses, all falling more than 1.7 per cent. Tech stocks saw the biggest decline, as investors became more risk averse. Gold prices appreciated and the safe haven yen saw strength, particularly as the US dollar weakened. Investors now see the Trump economic agenda being put on the back burner, pushing back the highly anticipated tax reforms and deregulation that many corporates were looking forward too. The CBOE Volatility Index, commonly known as the VIX, jumped more than 46 per cent to

back their inflation expectations, seeing an annual increase in consumer prices of 3.6 per cent over the next two years, down from 4 per cent in April, whereas house prices are seen rising 4.6 per cent, down from 5.2 per cent a month earlier. – NZME

New Zealand consumer confidence rose in May, helped by a strengthening labour market that has driven unemployment to its lowest level in almost nine years, stoking optimism about people’s finances even in the face of stagnant wage growth. The ANZ-Roy Morgan NZ consumer confidence index rose 2.2 points to 123.9 in May, with the current conditions index gaining 4.6 points to 127.8 and the future conditions index edging up 0.4 of a point to 121.2. Government data this week showed retail sales rose faster than expected, driven in part by cheap petrol and a relatively strong kiwi dollar keep import costs low. The strength of consumer spending over the past year has surprised the Reserve Bank. More recently, figures showed the unemployment rate fell to 4.9 per cent in the March quarter, the lowest level since December 2008, as employers took on more staff without having to raise wages. Yesterday’s survey showed a net 16 per cent of the 1000 respondents said their family finances

echrules, the China-based automotive research and development company, will display its first production electric supercar, Ren, at the esteemed 2017 Concorso d’Eleganza at the Villa d’Este. Featuring a dramatic aerospaceinspired design, Ren delivers power and performance like no other supercar thanks to its innovative TurbineRecharging Electric Vehicle (TREV) powertrain technology. Ren will take its place alongside a host of historical and luxurious vehicles at the world’s most exclusive automotive event, which takes place at the iconic Grand Hotel Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como, Italy, later this month.

Crafted in Turin by internationallyrenowned automotive designers, Fabrizio and Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Ren’s extraordinary three-cockpit layout and dramatic design will make it one of the most striking vehicles on display. The flagship version of Ren has a battery capacity of 25 kWh and delivers maximum power of 960kW with a range of 1170 km from 80 litres of diesel fuel (NEDC). The performance-focused modular layout allows the car to be configured with one, two or three polycarbonate canopies, specific to the needs of the driver. Where the three-occupant configuration is selected, the two passengers sit comfortably either side of the driver, in the ‘semi-prone’ position, with access to fold out touchscreens and a communication system that uses speakers and microphones built into each of the headrests. Production of Ren is likely to start in 2018, with orders already being taken.

Speed machine earns the ire of Mr Plod

T

he Concours of Elegance 2017 will be bringing a very special piece of history to Hampton Court Palace this September; the first ever car to receive a speeding ticket. The 1896 Arnold Benz Motor Carriage was travelling at four times the speed limit, at a heady 8mph, before being pulled over by a policeman on a bicycle. The law at the time required all cars stick to a limit of 2mph and that they be led by a man on foot waving a red flag at all times. But Walter Arnold, driving through Paddock Green in Kent, was doing neither. As a result Walter was convicted of speeding and forced to pay a shilling fine plus costs. It was in late 1896, with the advent of the Locomotives Act, that the need for a red flag bearer and 2mph speed limit were abolished and the limit raised to 14mph. In celebration, cars raced from London to Brighton in a so-called Emancipation Run, during which Walter Arnold actually competed. The run still exists to this day, in the form of the Royal Automobile Club’s annual Veteran Car Run,

in which pre-1905 cars recreate the journey from London to Brighton. A parade of these cars will also be arriving at the Concours of Elegance in September, allowing visitors to experience the sights and sounds of the earliest motoring pioneers. At the other end of the spectrum, the Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace will be welcoming some of the fastest cars ever built. On display will be the Le Mans-winning Jaguar XJR-9 and the Harrods-livered McLaren F1 GTR – both of which are capable of more than 240mph. For the first time at the Concours of Elegance, many of the cars on display will be taking part in moving parades over the weekend, including a trip to the event’s new central stage. Featuring commentary and interviews with some of the world’s foremost motoring experts, the stage will provide a focal point for all visitors to the Concours of Elegance.

ast year electric vehicle (EV) start-up NIO announced their EP9 hypercar had become the fastest EV to lap the 20.8km Nurburgring circuit – setting a time of 7 minutes and 5 seconds. Now, the NIO EP9 has set a new lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, achieving a lap time of 6m 45.9s. “In October 2016, we aimed to set a new lap record for an electric vehicle with our

Triumphant memories Bernard Egan MOTORING

M

emories and stories. Wonderful things! Especially so when we hear them from people with great life experiences. And of course organisations which provide the avenue for sharing memories and stories play such an important role in our community. Park Street Day Care is one of those groups. Each week, Monday to Friday, people gather at Park Street, where the incredible team of carers provide a full programme of activities. And a lot of fun as well. Fun for those being cared for, fun for those who visit them. This writer is fortunate to be a regular visitor and I’m sure others who attend in a similar capacity would agree, spending time with these great folk is always something to look forward to. Always fun. We talk about all sorts of things, sometimes – believe it or not – even cars, as happened recently. Sister Annette shared a memory of lovely car she remembered from her days growing up in Sevenoaks, in Kent, England. It was after World War Two. Thankfully the hostilities had ended, but some difficulties like food rationing continued; the dark days were getting brighter, but it was still a bit gloomy. Naturally people began to look to the future and that’s what Sister Annette’s father, a wood carver and cabinet maker by profession, did. A decision was made to emigrate. Sadly Sister Annette’s dear mother had passed away, so she and her younger sister along with their father packed up and headed for a new life, which was either going to be in Canada or New Zealand. We won! Sister Annette and her family came here. From quite an early age Sister Annette was interested in shape, form and architectural style. Before leaving England Sister Annette saw a car which she immediately recognised as being out of the ordinary. A Triumph Mayflower. The razor-edge styling developed by designers who had worked for famous coachbuilders impressed Sister Annette greatly. All of a sudden here was a car which stood out, an indication of brighter times ahead, just as its designers and the Triumph motor company wanted it to be. A small, luxurious and distinctive car had been produced. After its introduction at the Earl’s Court Motor Show and a flattering report in Motor magazine, the Mayflower proved popular, especially among those who could come up with the £505 price tag and wanted something a little out of the ordinary. The Mayflower’s 4-cylinder engine gave reasonable performance, good economy and could push it along at a respectable speed for the time. The car made an impression on the

young lady about to emigrate across the seas. Arriving in her new country, Sister Annette trained as a primary school teacher and speech therapist and followed those occupations. Along with her interest in design Sister Annette had also from an early age felt a calling to a religious vocation. A lively and spirited young lady – “I was a little bit mischievous” – Sister Annette prayed for guidance and it became clear she could do good work. Sister Annette’s father remarried and she and her sister were bridesmaids. Knowing her family were well settled, Sister Annette joined the Sisters of the Sacred Name. Her vocation would see Sister Annette using her talents and her training to help many others in many ways and while serving as Reverend Mother she visited communities established by her Order in Fiji and Tonga. After the Christchurch earthquakes members of the Order moved to Ashburton. When Sister Annette shared her memory of the car which had impressed her so much, several others at Day Care also remembered Triumph Mayflowers, some recalling local people who had owned them. And another memory was rekindled too. Carer Jenny Heath told us that after her birth in Taranaki her parents brought

her home from the maternity ward in a Triumph Mayflower. Jenny doesn’t actually remember that particular trip, but does know there were other outings in the car. And wait, there’s more – the parents of the writer’s friend Tony Adams were among the locals who owned a Triumph Mayflower and as young fellows we were allowed to go for occasional drives in the car. These drives were often on Sunday morning after church and usually followed a particular route. The reason for that route comes into the category of what happens on tour stays on tour. When they produced the Mayflower, Triumph attempted to manufacture a small car with an upmarket image.

They succeeded and it’s fascinating to think that image which impressed a young lady has remained. Sister Annette would not have known one day she would be recounting it all these years later in a country on the other side of the world. And by sharing Sister Annette has rekindled pleasant thoughts for others and reminded us all that memories and stories are wonderful things.

On their biggest day of the year, the Ashburton Trotting Club are offering a lucky chance to experience a once-in-a-lifetime experience with three of the biggest names in harness racing. As a promotion leading into the hugely successful Harness Jewels Race Day, which this year will be held at the Ashburton Racecourse on June 4, the Ashburton Trotting Club have this week launched the chance to enjoy a dual-sulky ride with three of the most successful drivers in the industry. The race will take place on Jewels Day itself with a large crowd watching on. Auctions are being run for the chance to share a ride in the sulky with Dexter Dunn, Blair Orange and Mid Canterbury’s own, Ricky May. Dunn is the current world driving champion and will be heading to Ameri-

can tracks in August to defend that title. On track to become the most successful ever driver in the history of harness racing in New Zealand, Dunn has been at the top of the tree for the past decade despite still being a few years shy of 30. Orange is making big strides in the driving ranks and has, in the past 10 months, driven more than 160 winners including multiple big race successes, while May is the most successful driver in the history of the New Zealand Trotting Cup, having won the race seven times. The auction to have a drive around the Ashburton track with Dunn is active on Trademe currently, while the drives with Orange and May will be offered up at the annual Harness Jewels function held on the Friday night before the big day. The Ashburton Trotting Club are also offering the chance for someone to secure a $500 credit through Meridian Energy at the function on the Friday night.

Dexter Dunn will be waiting for no one tonight at Addington. big colt probably gets the final say. “I am not sure I could hand up

on him,” admitted Dunn. “He is a hard-charging horse and I don’t really see him as a

horse I could hand up on. “He will get to the front and keep rolling. “He rated 1:52.4 for the 1950 metres last week so I don’t think he will need to go a whole lot quicker. “It probably just depends what sort of run Spankem gets whether he can beat us or not.” Spankem has looked the best of the juvenile crop but not by much and if he has to come from further back than the one-one to run down Alta Maestro it will be a huge challenge in a race where The Devil’s Own looks the only other serious winning chance in the race. The Oaks has a two-horse war look to it after the scratching of Delightful Memphis, with Spanish Armada clearly superior in the Nevele R Final last Friday but Bonnie Joan outstanding in second. Tonight Bonnie Joan looks a certain leader which suggests Spanish Armada will have to sit parked outside her to win, a place very few Oaks are won from. - HRNZ

Westbury secures Group One-performed colt Street Cry’s well-performed son Telperion has joined the stallion roster at Westbury Stud. Farm principal Gerry Harvey has purchased a significant interest in the Godolphin-bred colt, who was a high-class juvenile in Sydney. Third on debut, he then won the Listed Lonhro Plate at the expense of the subsequent Group One winner Prized Icon and was fourth in the Gr.2 Skyline Stakes before he filled a similar placing

in the Gr.1 Golden Slipper Stakes. Telperion stormed home from the tail of the field and, in doing so, he recorded the fastest closing 600 metres of the race. The handsome colt was then runner-up in the hands of James McDonald to the dual Group One winner Yankee Rose in the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Randwick. “One of the first people I rang about the horse was James and he said he’s a beautiful animal, he was very, very complimentary,”

Sister substitute Kelly McCulloch is hoping to do her sister proud when she combines with Benzini in Saturday’s Gr.1 Doomben Cup. The Pukekohebased jockey has taken the reins from her injured sibling Rosie Myers, who won the Gr.2 Brisbane Cup on the Adrian and Harry Bull-trained stayer 12 months ago. “Rosie had a fall and broke a leg. She was desperate to get back to ride Benzini, but the doctors have put her back in a moon boot and she is still out,” McCulloch said. Benzini finished runner-up in the Gr.1 New Zealand Stakes and third in the Gr.3 Canterbury Gold Cup before leaving for Brisbane. - NZME

Dexter Dunn is ready to declare war on the All Stars in the two richest races at Addington tonight – but only one of them by choice. Dunn pilots both Alta Maestro in the $170,000 Sires’ Stakes Final and Bonnie Joan in the $150,000 NZ Oaks and is adamant he will be leading and not handing up to his favoured Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen-trained rivals. And if that means he goes down fighting, so be it says Dunn. “I think if I hand up to either Spankem (in the Sires’ Stakes) or Spanish Armada (Oaks) I am probably conceding defeat,” Dunn said. “They are both good front runners with gate speed so I might as well use that advantage. “So the plan is definitely to stay in front of both and I think they can both win, even though the All Stars are very hard to beat at the premiers.” Dunn says his tactics on Bonnie Joan are borne out of confidence gained in recent weeks, whereas with Alta Maestro the

Telperion will be standing at a 2017 service fee of $5000 + GST, while a select number of lifetime breeding rights will be available to breeders. - NZME

Lucy Liu is close to opening a new campaign and her connections are confident the mare can make further progress through the grades in the coming months. “She ran at Wanganui on Castletown Stakes day and she trialled really well at Waverley the other day,” said Johno Benner, who prepares the Thorn Park four-year-old with his partner Hollie Wynyard. “She should have a good winter, she’s a tidy wet track horse.” The stable is also expecting Pickngo, recently successful on her home Otaki track on debut, to further her record. - NZME

New roles in Australia Group One performers and exstablemates King Kamada and Reilly Lincoln are embarking on new careers across the Tasman. If following the form book is your preferred method of deciphering, then there shouldn’t be too many issues with sorting out the puzzle around who will finish in the top four of the two sections in the Combined Country Rugby Competition after this weekend. Tomorrow’s matches are the final of the qualifying stages of the competition and while for some there is plenty to lose, for others there is everything to gain, with home playoff advantages on the line. Section One provides the most required calculations, aside from Darfield who are home and hosed in the top spot courtesy of an unbeaten season thus far. They can inflict further damage if they beat Prebbleton and leave them potentially relegated to fourth spot, which will require a trip to Southbridge next Saturday that no one particularly wants to undertake. Just ahead of Prebbleton, who sit third, on the standings are the Glenmark and Cheviot side who should bank maximum points in their clash with Hornby at Denton Oval tomorrow afternoon to assure themselves a home semifinal. Saracens and Waihora will fight it out for the final spot in Section One’s top four when they lock horns on Waihora turf. On form alone tomorrow’s matches should result in the top four finishing as; Darfield, Glenmark and Cheviot, Saracens and Prebbleton. Mid Canterbury’s two sides will be looking to salvage some pride from their games. Hampstead get a royal chance to turn some horrible form around when they host the equally unfortunate Ohoka at Hampstead, while Celtic will travel to Dunsandel to take on the Burnham, Dunsandel and Irwell side. In Section Two life is a little simpler. Southbridge, Rakaia, Lincoln

Crusaders face fired-up Chiefs By Patrick Mckendry From one big New Zealand rival to another, the Crusaders are confident they have the players and just as importantly the strategy to beat the Chiefs in Suva after their disappointment in the city last year. They are also aware of the need to stay disciplined in the face of what is likely to be a fired up Chiefs team, who will be rested after their bye. They feel the Chiefs will push the boundaries at times, with coach Scott Robertson saying Kiwi ref Mike Fraser is the right man to keep the peace. Fresh from beating the Hurricanes 20-12 at a freezing Christchurch which extended their unbeaten streak to 11, the Crusaders have rolled into a wall of humidity in Fiji and are preparing for the conditions as well for what has become a grudge match. Last year in this fixture at the same ANZ National Stadium venue, the Crusaders threw the ball around despite the downpour which started just before kick-off, and the Chiefs made them pay for it, controlling possession to win 23-13, a Damian McKenzie penalty after the final siren denying the Crusaders a bonus point. Sport Ashes strike ‘won’t happen’ Darren Lehmann is confident cricket’s pay dispute won’t lead to a player boycott of the Ashes but the Australian coach has urged both sides to find a resolution. A former president of the Australian Cricketers’ Association, Lehmann admitted the tense stand-off over a new memorandum of understanding would prove a distraction at next month’s ICC Champions Trophy in England and Wales. But he said he was sure the situation would not worsen to the point where Australian players would go on strike for the Ashes.

Ashburton’s rising swimming star Bree Middleton has earned herself national recognition. The Mount Hutt College student has been invited to attend the New Zealand Swimming Youth Development Squad training camp in October for a week off the back of a hugely successful 12 months in the water.

A bronze medallist in the 200 metre freestyle at the National Age Group Championships as well as four top 10 placings has Middleton climbing right up the tree of competitive swimming in New Zealand. Middleton will be able to call on one of the most successful brains in swimming while part of the national development squad with the conditioning coach of the most successful

Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps, attending the squad’s week long camp. Middleton, will be in action at the EA Networks Centre this weekend as part of the Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim Team who are hosting their annual Ashburton Splash Swim Meet. The Ashburton squad will number 29, which is almost the entire squad, and they will compete in a field of 250 swimmers

who are travelling to Ashburton from between North Canterbury and Timaru. This is the first swim meet back and the start of the winter season after having a three week break and is a great meet to try to perfect technique and get back into race mode. The meet kicks off on Saturday afternoon with swimmers returning to hit the water early on Sunday morning.

Gavrilova marches on Australia’s Daria Gavrilova is through to the round of 16 of the Italian Open after beating French world No. 24 Caroline Garcia 7-5 3-6 6-3. The 23year-old Russian-born Gavrilova had to qualify for the tournament after forgetting to enter the main draw. Frosty wants more Winton Supercars history BY MATT COUGHLAN Ford star Mark Winterbottom will return to his happy hunting ground of Winton confident he can continue to push up the Supercars leaderboard after a “horrendous” start to the season. While 31 points separates the top five headed by DJR Team Penske’s Fabian Coulthard, there is a gap between Winterbottom (648) and Prodrive Racing Australia team-mate Chaz Mostert, who is locked with Scott McLaughlin on 771. After posting just one top 10

finish from the opening four races of the season, improved performances at Phillip Island and Perth have helped propel Winterbottom up the drivers’ standings. “It’s been getting better, which is good because the start of the year was horrendous really,” Winterbottom said. “I think we’re progressing in the right direction but we are still probably just a fraction behind. “We keep getting better as the weekend goes on so we’re doing the right things, we just need to get that direction a bit quicker.”

Winterbottom claimed victories at Winton in 2014 and 2015 – the year he won the championship. “We’ve had seven podiums (at Winton) in the last seven races, which is a pretty good stat,” he said. But with a different leadup to racing on his home track, adaptability is going to play a bigger role than history. “Normally we test before we get there and this year we haven’t tested,” Winterbottom said. “It’s a little bit different to previous years but hopefully it’s still good to us.”

The track is in its second year after being resurfaced, which Winterbottom expects to create a small amount of tyre degradation, making strategy key. “There’s lots of things that normally at Winton don’t change, but I think it will now purely because the surface and a new tyre it’s going to be different,” he said. “I wouldn’t be surprised to roll out and have to be changing the car to chase something instead of having a good base like you normally do up there. “It should be a bit tougher this year than normal.” - AAP

However former state skipper Buderus says no one has really risen so far this year and he expects Farah to be named when Blues coach Laurie Daley announces his team on Monday.
