A unique pilot project which aims to improve water quality and restore water flows to spring-fed streams in Mid Canterbury has received a funding boost from government coffers.

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has allocated $312,000 to the managed aquifer recharge (MAR) project in the Lagmhor district.

The funding comes from MPI’s Irri-

gation Acceleration Fund (IAF) and the announcement was acknowledged by Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy, during his visit to Canterbury yesterday.

Environment Canterbury deputy chair of commissioners David Caygill welcomed the announcement which will allow the regional council to carry out the pilot study in the Hinds plains area where groundwater nitrate concentrations are well above the national bottom-line.

“The trial – which is a first for Canterbury – will use clean Rangitata River water to soak into the aquifer in an area of high nitrate concentrations, diluting the nitrate, providing better reliability for groundwater takes, as well as allowing natural ecosystems to regenerate,” Mr Caygill said.

Police seek help from community By kurT BayEr Renee Duckmanton, whose body was burned and dumped on a rural Canterbury road, was last seen in Christchurch’s red light district on Saturday night, police have confirmed.

Police are also now talking to “persons of interest” as part of the homicide inquiry looking into her death.

Detective inspector Darryl Sweeney said at a press conference last night that the last sighting of Miss Duckmanton, a sex worker, was on the Manchester and Peterborough streets area of the red light district on Saturday.

They’re asking for other sex workers, cli-

ents and members of the public who saw Miss Duckmanton between 8pm and 10pm on Saturday night to come forward.

Asked if the person responsible for her death was one of her clients, Mr Sweeney said he “can’t rule out that the sex industry is not a factor”.

“Police now believe Renee’s work in the sex industry may have been a factor in her death ,” Mr Sweeney said.

Officers are speaking with the city’s working girls and asked them to come forward with any information.

Even if people only saw Miss Duckmanton for “a brief minute”, it would be “extremely helpful” if that information was

passed on to police, Mr Sweeney said.

Police were patrolling the area last night and will be keeping in contact with the working girls and the Prostitutes Collective, he said.

“A large team of police staff continue to make progress in our investigation,” Mr Sweeney said.

“The information we’ve received from the public has continued to be a significant help in this and we continue to urge anyone who has information to get in contact with us.

“Police continue to complete a number of other scene examinations across Christchurch in relation to our investigations.

“Staff will continue to remain in these areas while we speak with members of the public.”

Police are asking for anyone who saw Miss Duckmanton between 8pm Saturday through to Sunday evening, or if they know of her movements between those times, to contact Christchurch Central Police Station on 03 363-7400.

Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously via the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555-111.

Meanwhile, flowers were laid yesterday at the spot where Renee Duckmanton’s burned body was found on Sunday.

Hinds mad hatters support Pink Ribbon

Breast cancer isn’t fussy; Libby Taylor knows that all too well.

There’s no history of breast cancer in her family, but last November she found a lump in her breast while breastfeeding her then fourmonth-old daughter.

For Libby, the months that followed have been a rollercoaster, but it’s a ride she’s been determined to remain positive on.

Yesterday, that positivity shone through as Libby and a couple of friends hosted a Pink Ribbon morning tea in Hinds to raise money for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. They named it the Mad Hatter’s Pink Tea Party and around 50 people donned bright pink clothes and the fanciest hats they could find, went along and ate, drank tea, talked, listened and raised money.

Local businesses got on board donating goods and a silent auction was held, but before that even took place the group had already raised around $1800. Money raised will go to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation to fund research projects and medical grants to help improve the survivorship of breast cancer in New Zealand Libby – who has four daughters,

aged 8, 6, 4 and 10 months was 32 when she found the lump in her breast.

She remembers thinking it was simply something to do with breast feeding; a blocked duct maybe. But she went to the doctor on the Monday and the following Tuesday she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

She had three weeks to get her head around the fact she had cancer, before her breast was removed.

“Throughout the past six months I have remained positive, which has helped me through that, and the fact that I have a wonderful husband and four healthy girls to come home to,” she said.

The end is now in sight; she only has weeks of treatment left. Then she can start getting back to a normal life and, slowly but surely, the blonde hair she shaved off when it started to fall out, will grow back.

Libby said yesterday’s Pink Ribbon event was about raising money for an organisation which did so much for women like her. For her, it was about giving back and raising awareness.

Ashburton meets safe air standards Timaru might have the unhealthy title of having the “worst level of air pollution” in Oceania, but Ashburton’s winter air just 80km up the road is meeting safe air standards.

Figures released by the World Health Organisation show Timaru air contains more particles than the safety recommendation for air pollution.

Annual levels of PM10 particles and PM2.5 particles are used to measure air quality - these are so small that they can get into the lungs, potentially causing serious health problems.

Timaru had a PM2.5 annual mean level of 15 micrograms per

cubic metre, and a PM10 level of 28 micrograms per cubic metre.

Ashburton had a PM2.5 annual mean level of 10 micrograms and a PM10 level of 21; Ashburton’s levels were the same as Christchurch, the worst of the major cities.

The guidelines state that levels of 10 and 20 micrograms per cubic metre respectively are considered safe.

Ashburton’s highest reading this year was 37 micrograms on April 28, and it has had one breach this year of the 50 mark – that was on March 10 and was attributed to dust not smoky chimneys.

Environment Canterbury air

spokesperson Katherine Trought said three-quarters of air pollution was attributed to home heating but Ashburton had managed to slash its high pollution nights from 21 in 2000 to nine in 2014 and just one last year.

“At a recent meeting with Ashburton District councillors we said it had been great to see the efforts of residents being rewarded with improved air quality. Having just one high-pollution night last winter is an excellent achievement that we would love to be sustained or bettered.”

She said this could be achieved by continuing to burn well sea-

soned wood so wood burners operated without any visible smoke.

One of the keys to a hot, clean fire, was to use plenty of kindling.

From September this year, the government’s National Environmental Standards (NES) sets a maximum level of three high-pollution nights a year and Ashburton is already meeting that target.

ECan’s winter air campaign launched recently was all about educating people on how to burn better.

“We’re encouraging Ashburton wood-burner users to continue to fine-tune their burning techniques so they can burn smoke-

free and play their part in improving air quality. A great way to do this is to step outside and have a look at your chimney to see if it is smoking 15 minutes after the fire being lit.”

The campaign also encourages people to change to cleaner heating options over time.

Water project funding boost From P1 The trial has the backing of the Ashburton Zone Committee based on the recommendations of the Hinds Drains Working Party – a sub-committee formed to look at solutions to the unique water issues faced by irrigators in the Hinds Plains area.

“The recent Hinds Plains Plan Change introduced tougher nutrient limits, but also contemplated the trial going ahead as a further way of improving water quality,” Mr Caygill said.

“Funding for this trial is an example of the local community working with local, regional and central government for multiple community and environmental benefits.

“We welcome the IAF funding contribution as the pilot project could not have gone ahead without this support.”

American hydrologist Bob Bower is heading up the MAR project. He is overseeing the building of what he describes as a “leaky pond” through which water will percolate down through the gravel into the aquifers.

The water will become an Ashburton District Council-owned unused stock water allocation via the Rangitata Diversion Race and Valetta Irrigation Scheme.

The project will also use an extensive network of groundwater, surface water and climate monitoring as well as purpose-built computer models to allow the effects of the trial to be distinguished from other effects on the groundwater and waterways.

Set painter Cherie Livingstone has gone to great heights to reproduce London street scenes for Variety Theatre Ashburton’s production of Oliver, which opens tomorrow night.

The Dickens tale is sordid, rough and violent and Cherie’s artistic skills have been to the fore creating scenes that will help the audience feel that vibe.

Orphan Oliver starts life in a workhouse and is sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker. He escapes to London and joins a gang of pickpockets led by an old crim called Fagin.

Central to Cherie’s work has been the creation of the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral in London. The church’s dome is the masterpiece of famous architect Sir Christopher Wren and was built around the 1700s.

The version to grace the stage at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre is seven metres wide and 6.5 metres tall. It has been cut out of MDF and

painstakingly painted by Cherie so it can be strikingly silhouetted for the show.

“There was a lot of going up and down the ladder and I’m not that great with heights,” Cherie said. But her efforts over the past two weeks have been worth it.

She said it was harder to copy such a well-known building than work from her imagination. “It is always interesting trying to create something that is real. St Paul’s is such an iconic place and you can’t make it up.”

Cherie worked on other street scenes earlier in the year and praised her building crew for their help in creating dark scenes from the 1830s.

“We recycled a lot of the flat scenes from previous shows and I painted some in my garage, but we have a great team of builders that have been conjuring up the scenes.”

She said the set and props were integral to the telling of the story and helped convey a dark story.

Hospice offers holistic support

It is a privilege and an inspiration to work alongside people with life-limiting illnesses guests at Mid Canterbury Hospice’s community meeting were told this week.

The meeting served as an opportunity to introduce the range of services the hospice offers.

Palliative care specialist Kate Reid said traditionally it was the clergy who provided support for families facing death and grief but advances in science had resulted in more medical intervention to alleviate the more troubling symptoms.

“That was really positive but what has happened is that we’ve almost medicalised the process of dying,” she said.

“But what makes us people is the emotional, mental and spir-

itual elements of who we are.”

Ms Reid said there has been a growing interest in returning endof-life care back to communities, with a focus on health-promoting palliative care and putting discus-

sions about death back on the table.

In the past people were more exposed to dying and death at a young age and it was important to teach the younger generation

not to fear what is a normal part of life, she said.

“People can become segmented from social groups because others don’t know what to say, they can become isolated and disenfranchised, she said.

“If we can develop compassionate communities we are not so reliant on healthcare professionals.

“The hospice in Ashburton has brought compassion back into community care to bring respect back into end-of-life services – not every community in New Zealand has done that.”

Former Ashburton College English teacher Christine Wilson described her job as a voluntary

biography writer for the service as a privilege.

“I feel very uplifted and privileged to be able to do this – it’s really inspirational,” she said.

Counsellor Struan Duthie, who offers pastoral care to hospice clients, their families, carers and hospice volunteers, spoke about his role in helping people talk about their fears and difficulties.

Reiki master Jo-Anne Thomas and physiotherapist and massage therapist Jane Eaton talked about the support they can offer in helping to relieve pain, assist with relaxation and circulation when people are bedridden or confined to a chair for much of the time.

Dairy farm prices ease

Dairy farm prices continue to ease back in the face of lower milk prices, according to the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) latest facts.

Median sales price per hectare for dairy farms fell to $33,897 compared with $36,687 in the three months to February and $37,761 for the three months to March 2015.

The median dairy farm size for the three months to March was

121 hectares.

On a price per kg of milksolids basis, the median sale price was $34.79 per kg, down 8.4 per cent in the three months to February, and down 2.9 per cent compared with the same March period a year earlier.

The Dairy Farm Price index rose by 4.3 per cent in the three months to March, but fell by 15.9 per cent compared with the same period 12 months ago.

The median price per hectare across all farms in the three

months to March was down 2.7 per cent – $27,202 compared with $27,957 in the three months to March 2015. REINZ’s all farm price index fell by 1.7 per cent in the three months compared against the same year-ago period.

The index adjusts for differences in farm size, location and farming type.

REINZ rural spokesman Brian Peacocke said figures for the latest three month period indicated an easing in sales volumes for most categories of rural property, with

the exception of horticulture.

“While in general terms the dairy sector is subdued, isolated sales of good quality farms at very good price, do reflect an optimism in the longer term future of the industry,” he said.

In Canterbury finishing and grazing farms sold well and there was strong demand for quality arable units, but buyers were cautious if the price expectation was deemed too strong. Irrigation costs were also under the spotlight.

In brief Mobil robbery Ashburton Police say they’re following positive lines of inquiry in relation to an armed robbery at Mobil Ashburton on Friday night. A man walked into the service station at about 8.30pm on Friday night and produced a knife before demanding cash from a staff member. The offender was described as being in his late 20s to early 30s, about 6ft tall, of lean build, with olive skin and a small amount of facial hair. He was wearing a grey vest with a dark long-sleeved top underneath and long black pants. He was described as very agitated.

Dairy raided A Christchurch dairy was raided by police yesterday. Officers swarmed into Sockburn Dairy on Main South Road at midday.

A woman at the dairy, who had been seen speaking to police, said she had no comment to make.

Asked why police raided the dairy, the woman said: “No drugs, I’m housing people, okay?” She refused to comment further. The dairy is one of several shops in a busy block of shops on Main South Road.

Dunedin stabbing Police are looking for three people in relation to a stabbing near the corner of Moray Place and Princes Street, Dunedin on May 1. After reviewing CCTV footage, police want to identify a solid Maori/ Polynesian woman, a smaller Maori/Polynesian woman and a man wearing a black or brown leather jacket. The stabbing may have been related to an earlier incident inside a night club. The victim is recovering well and should have no lasting effects.

Coffee culture takes off at Ashburton College A group of Year 12 Ashburton College tourism students showed off their enterprising skills by operating a café during morning tea and lunchtime on Monday and Tuesday.

The students have been taking part in an espresso course at the college with Ara Institute of Canterbury tutor Pauline Blunden.

As part of the programme they operated a café on Monday and

Tuesday where students and teachers could purchase coffees.

The course, which is held several times a year, is run over three days where the students study theory, learn how to use the machines and have a go at making coffee.

A man who tried to break up a fight between three dogs copped a bite on the hand and a trip to hospital for his troubles. A rescue helicopter spokesman said the man, who is in his 30s, had reasonably deep wounds to his hands as a result of trying to defuse the rumble. He was airlifted to Waikato Hospital where he was undergoing treatment.

Air pollution technology in the wind

Niwa air quality scientist Dr Ian Longley said the new sensor technology trialled last year had the potential to provide new and valuable information.

“This year we are planning to do some follow-up testing with our existing participants as well as recruit more people in Rangiora to help us out,” he said.

“What we learn this year will then enable us to progress to a much larger study, perhaps in other towns, in 2017.”

Niwa has also developed the indoor state-of-the-art monitoring technology contained in small and low cost units, which contain sensors for particles (dust, smoke or soot) and carbon dioxide and can detect sudden increases in the levels of particles in the air. – NZME

New Zealand scientists are trialling new technology in Canterbury that could revolutionise how centres can better monitor and control air pollution.

A new stage of a Niwa air quality project is about to get under way in Rangiora, as a World Health Organisation (WHO) index again highlights how some South Island towns have rated poorly for air pollution.

Last year, scientists installed and tested new hi-tech sensors in 14 Rangiora homes during September to detect when people were using their woodburners.

Each participant had since received an information pack with detailed information about the air quality in their home, temperature variations and dust peaks.

The scientists found that while it was easy to detect when a woodburner was lit, it was much harder to tell when the fire had stopped burning.

UN air drop for Syrian town World powers, including Russia and the United States, have agreed to plans to airdrop food and other supplies to towns besieged by the Assad regime in Syria, in a key test of the ceasefire.

The air drops will start on June 1, if the regime continues to obstruct land access to more than a dozen towns across the country in desperate need of support.

The agreement, which follows months of pressure from Syrian support groups, aid groups and British MPs, came out of talks between the major international backers of all sides in the conflict intended to pave the way for a resumption of peace negotiations in Geneva.

Little progress has been made in setting the terms of a peace deal, with the western nations backing the opposition in saying they expect President Bashar al-Assad to stand down, while Russia stands by the regime.

No new date for fresh negotiations was announced.

But the various countries of the so-called “International Syrian Support Group” said they wanted to extend the ceasefire which has operated on and off since February, with penalties for those who

Potatoes linked to high blood pressure

A weekly diet which includes at least four servings of the humble potato is linked to an increase in the risk of high blood pressure, researchers said.

They found adults who had a higher intake of boiled, baked or mashed spuds and french fries had an increased risk of hypertension.

Replacing one serving a day of boiled, baked, or mashed potatoes with one serving of a non-starchy vegetable is associated with a lower risk of developing hypertension, the US-based researchers said in a study published online in the British Medical Journal.

But a linked editorial, by experts from two Australian universities, said that studying overall dietary patterns and risk of disease is more useful than a focus on individual foods or nutrients.

The researchers, based at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, followed more than 187,000 men and women from three large US studies for more than 20 years. Dietary intake, including frequency of potato consumption, was assessed using a questionnaire, while hypertension was reported by participants based on diag-

nosis by a health professional.

Compared with consumption of less than one serving a month, participants who consumed at least four servings a week had an increased risk of hypertension of 11 per cent for boiled, baked or mashed potatoes and of 17 per cent for french fries.

But consumption of potato crisps was associated with no increased risk.

The authors said potatoes have a high glycaemic index compared with other vegetables, so can trigger a sharp rise in blood sugar levels, and this could be an explanation for the findings.

UNSW nutrition lecturer, Dr Rebecca Reynolds, agreed with the editorial saying people focus too much on population-level studies and foods where certain nutrients and foods are demonised, rather than a whole dietary approach.

“Potatoes when consumed in healthier ways such as cooked in potato salads, baked, boiled, mashed with milk and extra virgin olive oil, going easy on the salt, are a good food to be included as part of a healthy, balanced diet,” she said.

Police in northern Colorado say a babysitter has been charged after she brought two children with her to rob a bank.

Weld County sheriff deputies said Rachel Einspahr, 28, went through a bank drive-thru in Severance, a tiny town near Fort Collins, and sent a note up the vacuum tube.

The note said there was a man in the car who wanted cash - and that if he didn’t get it, he might harm her children, police said.

“Do not sound alarm, the man in the very back wants $100s and $50s . . . no dye packs or trackers,” Einspahr wrote, according to court documents cited by CBS Denver. “He has gun on my kids.”

There was no man in the car, police said, and the two children were not Einspahr’s.

Instead, she was babysitting them at the time of the robbery attempt.

Authorities were called to Colorado East Bank & Trust about a woman in a white Nissan SUV who slipped the clerk a note demanding cash, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies said they searched the area and found the vehicle parked at a nearby residence.

Matt Turner, a sheriff’s spokesman, told the Washington Post that after the bank robbery, Einspahr went back to the residence of the family she was working for. Authorities found her there and arrested her.

Her employers were home at the time and took custody of the children, who were unharmed.

Turner would not release details about the family but said the children were “young”.

“The Weld County Sheriff’s Office is thankful that nobody was hurt during this incident.”

Kimmel show renewed It’s no prank: ABC says it has renewed late-night host Jimmy Kimmel’s contract for three years. The deal will keep Jimmy Kimmel Live! on the air through fall 2019, the network said yesterday.

Kimmel’s show is now in its 14th season, which makes him the longest-running host among the competitors that include NBC’s Jimmy Fallon and CBS’ Stephen Colbert. Kimmel is known for pranks, including a staged twerking accident, and for encouraging others to follow suit. That includes parents who pretend they’ve eaten their kids’ Halloween lolly stash and tape the reaction for Jimmy Kimmel Live! to air. Such comedy has proved a big internet draw and encouraged other hosts, including CBS’ James Corden, to create skits aimed at an online afterlife.

Sinead O’Connor

Sinead O’Connor found Suburban Chicago police say they found Irish singer-songwriter Sinead O’Connor after she went missing earlier this week, staying at a hotel. A police spokesman said that 10 departments helped canvas hotels in the area. He said finding O’Connor safe was “a wonderful outcome.” He declined to provide other details, including about where exactly O’Connor was found, her condition at the time or where she is now. A rambling message posted recently on O’Connor’s official Facebook page referred to emotional trauma she had been through over the years. O’Connor scored an international hit in 1990 with her rendition of Prince’s ballad Nothing Compares 2 U.

W

hen there’s something good happening in our community we need to shout about it; too often we don’t, we’re far too modest.

While beating the rest of Canterbury to meet the Government’s clean air targets might seem like small stuff, environmentally it’s huge. And it’s something we should be celebrating. While we achieved the goal of just one breach of standards last year, our southern neighbour Timaru is making and breaking its own records – for all the wrong reasons.

Achieving that target has not come without a fair bit of angst, however, and to some degree that angst is ongoing.

The greatest contributor to air pollution is smoke from home fires and that has meant a tough regime of logburner replacement by air quality monitoring agency Environment Canterbury. This has been universally unpopular with many homeowners saying their old burner was as clean burning as their next door neighbour’s newer model that pumped black smoke into the sky.

ECan’s deal was that any logburner over 15 years of age had to be replaced with a new, low emissions model. Those replacements have come at a significant cost to homeowners, but it’s obvious that smoke can pour out chimneys from burners old or new. It’s all about the quality of wood that’s burned and in some ways that makes a mockery of the logburner replacement scheme.

In spite of a significant backlash from people who came under fire because they refused to make the change, ECan has stuck with the programme and will clearly stick with it until the last old logburner is consigned to the scrap heap.

But you have to wonder, whether the same improvement in air quality would have been achieved if the old burners stayed and the focus had been on clean burning education from day one.

Heartland posts 10% gain

BY JONATHAN UNDERHILL New Zealand producer input and output prices fell in the first quarter, mainly driven by lower fuel prices and weaker output prices for sheep, beef, grain and dairy farmers.

Input prices fell 1 per cent in the first quarter for an annual decline of 0.9 per cent, while output prices declined 0.2 per cent in the quarter for a 0.1 per cent annual gain, Statistics New Zealand said.

Input prices for petroleum and coal manufacturers have more than halved since the second quarter of 2012. In the first quarter of this year, their input prices fell 22 per cent and their output prices dropped 18 per cent, which the government statistician said was mainly influenced by lower crude oil, petrol and diesel prices. Lower fuel prices also led to a 0.3 per cent decline in the farm expenses price index. Fuel has been a major

element of weak inflation, with the consumer price index rising 0.2 per cent in the first quarter, or 0.5 per cent excluding petrol.

The business price indexes come a day after the release of the Reserve Bank’s quarterly survey of expectations, which showed expectations for inflation one year out rose to 1.22 per cent from 1.09 per cent in the previous survey, which was the lowest reading since 1994, while the two-year ahead figure barely budged at 1.64 per cent from 1.63 per cent. Persistently weak inflation adds to the case for the central bank to cut the official cash rate a quarter point to 2 per cent as soon as its June meeting.

Output prices for sheep, beef and grain farmers fell 8.7 per cent in the first quarter, while output prices for meat manufacturers fell

4.6 per cent.

Dairy cattle farmers’ output prices fell 6 per cent, although output prices for dairy product manufacturers rose 3.4 per cent.

Infratil investors watch $1b war chest

BY PAUL MCBETH Infratil investors are waiting to see what the listed investment firm will do with the $1 billion war chest it’s built up since selling its Z Energy, Lumo and iSite holdings in the 2016 financial year.

The Wellington-based com-

pany is sitting on cash of almost $730 million and unused credit lines of about $270 million which it plans to invest both within its existing units and in new opportunities. Chief executive Marko Bogoievski told a briefing in Wellington that Infratil’s focus is on renewable energy, the retirement

sector, social infrastructure such as housing, telecommunications infrastructure, and waste management.

“Some sectors are represented in our portfolio today, and there are some we hope to have in the near future,” he said.

Heartland Bank posted a 10 per cent gain in nine-month profit while delaying a planned return to shareholders, saying market volatility had created opportunities for acquisitions which may be a better use of its capital.

Heartland affirmed its guidance for profit of $51 million to $55 million for the year ending June 30, up from $36 million in 2015.

In December, Heartland told shareholders the bank was keen on expanding its consumer finance business with a particular focus on distribution channels or new technologies, but in the absence of any compelling options, would return capital to shareholders. The Auckland-based lender’s investors voted to simplify the company’s structure by amalgamating its businesses into one unit, issue up to $75 million of tier 2 capital instrument and return as much as $100 million to shareholders.

TINWALD SALE Prime lamb prices continued to strengthen at this week’s Tinwald sale, with a good yarding of heavy lambs on offer.

Ewes sold at similar values to recent weeks. Heavy shorn lambs fetched $105$118, medium weights $94-$101 and lighter lambs, $75-$86.

ums $70-$78 and lighter sheep, $55-$65.

A larger yarding of store lambs went under the hammer, with keen interest in better quality stock. Shorn crossbred lambs sold from $60 to $78.

Woolly black-face lambs in forward condition realised up to $80 and woolly crossbreds, up to $90.

Ravensdown opened its state-of-the-art precision blending plant in Hornby yesterday.

The $5.7 million plant, the first in Australasia, offers made-to-order blends of fertiliser at three times the previous speed, processing and dispatching up to 250 tonnes an hour, Ravensdown chief executive Greg Campbell said.

“We investigated this a number of years ago, we were looking for a one-stop shop for custom blends to increase productivity gains,” Mr Campbell said.

“It has the capability to fill a truck every six minutes – as opposed to the 20 minutes it currently takes.”

The blending tower works in conjunction with the company’s soil testing laboratory to diagnose the exact nutrients required according to individual farmers’ soil profiles, and uses precision spreading technology to apply the right amount of fertiliser in the right place.

The completely automated systems has the capability to blend solid and liquid fertilisers and trace element coatings to order.

The plant’s significant storage capacity and high intensity mixers’ twin rotating shafts and overlapping paddles enable faster processing and thoroughly mixes all ingredients.

Distributed straight into the truck, rather than into storage bays, the new tower also means less handling of product.

The fully enclosed system ticks more health and safety and environmental boxes, generating less dust at both ends of the delivery chain.

Canterbury farmers will be the first in line for the custom blends and coatings, however, plans are afoot to upgrade Ravensdown’s main centre facilities across the country, with New Plymouth next on the list, Mr Campbell said.

“We are really excited. We think this is a potential game changer for the industry,” he said.

Greg Campbell The co-operative also announced its plans to bring forward its initial rebate to its farmer-members yesterday.

“We are bringing the annual fertiliser rebate to our shareholders forward to $21, which is three months earlier than we have in the past,” Mr Campbell said.

“We will be paying the rebate in two parts, the June portion, then the remainder after the completion of our annual accounts, which close off at the end of May. “We have adopted this strategy to help the many farmers struggling with cashflows this season. It recognises the significant commercial and climatic challenges out there at the moment.”

Mr Campbell said the co-operative’s performance had been building steadily over the past three years following a major restructuring project.

“We have paid off a third of a billion dollars’ worth of debt in 36 months last year and still managed to pay a record rebate in 2015 and, despite some serious headwinds, we have still been able to pay some of the annual rebate early this year,” he said.

Ravensdown has also led fertiliser price reductions three times this calendar year, with urea now below $500 a tonne for the first time since 2006.

2T fresh basil leaves ■ Cut 4 deep slits in each Tegel Lean and Lite Chicken Thigh.

Place into a shallow dish. Combine the lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, shallot, rosemary and lemon zest. Pour over the chicken and toss to coat. Season with black pepper.

■ Cover and refrigerate for one hour.

■ Heat a large frying pan over medium heat. Cook the chicken for 4 to 5 minutes on each side or until it is brown and cooked through.

■ Serve with the roast vegetable and orzo salad and a green salad.

Roast vegetable and orzo salad ■ Preheat the oven to 200°C. ■ Combine the red onion, red pepper, yellow pepper, courgettes and asparagus, if using,

in a large bowl. Add the olive oil, rosemary and garlic and mix well to combine.

■ Toss to coat evenly then place into a large shallow oven dish.

Roast in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until the vegetables are golden and tender. Remove from the oven, stir in the balsamic vinegar then set aside to cool.

■ Meanwhile, cook the orzo following the packet directions.

Drain, rinse under cold water and cool.

■ Combine the roast vegetables, orzo, blanched green beans (if using) and herbs. Toss well.

■ Serve warm with the rosemary and lemon chicken thighs.

isiting a friend at his office many years ago I noticed his surroundings were well organised and orderly.

There seemed to be a place for everything and everything was in its place.

The name on one filing drawer intrigued me.

It was labelled “bits and pieces”.

While I never saw the contents of that drawer, I imagined that my friend Jack used it to keep things which could come in handy either in the course of his work or for other purposes.

Jack is renowned for the interesting snippets he has collected over the years, so I’m pretty sure my assumption about his bits and pieces file is correct.

I thought it was a great idea so I copied it and started my own bits and pieces file; it’s used for all sorts of things including snippets and story ideas.

After watching a YouTube documentary the other day – actually to be honest the “other day” was about six weeks ago – I slipped a note in my bits and pieces file which said Sir Stirling Moss was noted for a great act of sportsmanship.

Putting something else into the file which did actually occur the other day, I looked at that and some other tidbits and thought it was time they were mentioned.

Sir Stirling Moss is unquestionably one of the greatest all-round motor racing drivers of all time.

His skill behind the wheel is legendary but his Formula One career was cut short following a near fatal accident at Goodwood in 1962.

Although the accident happened 54 years ago, Sir Stirling Moss is still revered and in the years since he has taken part in historic racing and re-enactments.

Apart from being a magnificent driver Sir Stirling Moss has several other claims to fame.

He designed his home which included features well ahead of their time, he is renowned for his sense of style and first and foremost he is a

man who has set high standards, he is the quintessential English gentleman.

Nowhere was this better illustrated that at the 1958 Portuguese Grand Prix when he defended Mike Hawthorne, his close competitor for that year’s World Championship.

Sir Stirling Moss pointed out the accusation which would have cost Mike Hawthorne seven points and given Sir Stirling the title was wrong.

It goes down in history as one of the greatest ever gestures of sportsmanship.

The most recent addition to my bits and pieces file concerns Ollie Hurst who kindly allowed us to share his story a fortnight ago.

At that time Ollie was preparing to go to the Swap Meet.

On the day a visitor from out of town approached another stall holder and asked “do you know a chap called Ollie who is well known for his collection of 1932 Fords?”

The answer he received was probably not quite what he expected.

Andrew Hurst, Ollie’s son said “yes I sure do, he’s my dad and that’s him just over there”.

The chap was keen to speak with Ollie because many years ago in Auckland he and a friend drove a 1932 Ford Cabriolet and he often wondered what became of the car.

The car he had known was red and had some minor alterations to the bodywork.

Long story short the car is the vehicle now owned by Ollie.

Ollie’s car is an historic vehicle and so is a badge on it.

It depicts the Ashburton Motors Ford Agency.

Now I can well imagine some readers will be thinking what?

taken care of by the Gluyas family and Ashburton Motors sold Volkswagens and were Datsun/ Nissan agents.

And that’s right, but the latter is a different Ashburton Motors.

Bert Holmes opened Ashburton Motors Ltd in 1925 for the sale and servicing of Ford vehicles.

Initially the business was situated in Wills Street (currently Wilson Windscreens) but in 1926 moved to bigger premises in Tancred Street and then in 1929 moved to other premises in Tancred Street (currently the Sports Hall), where the business remained, and prospered, until Bert closed it in 1954 due to ill health.

At that stage the Gluyas family became and remain to this day the local Ford dealers.

Holmes passed away soon after retiring.

Interestingly both Tancred Street premises were former livery stables.

In 1957 another company with the same name which was formed by Vic Wilson and Jack Law opened a large new garage and service station on the corner of East Street and Walnut Avenue – which of course we now know as Mobil.

Back to the bits and pieces file.

A few months ago well-known local motoring enthusiast Mike Crum kindly gave me some amusing material which he thought we might like to share.

There are many more amusing ones as well so from time to time I’ll delve into the file and share some more.

My file isn’t just about motoring of course, and something which ended up in it recently is quite intriguing.

Stirling Moss: A champion driver who also knew the value of sportsmanship.

The movie Saving Private Ryan, which was released in this country in 1998, tells the story of a band of soldiers who go behind enemy lines at the time of the DDay landings in World War Two to rescue Private Ryan because his three brothers had been killed in action and the authorities wanted to prevent the family facing further tragedy.

Note to self in Bits and Pieces file – see page 151 of the book of Kiwi Trivia.

It records that in World War One sadly four members of the Barnes family were killed, so the youngest son was exempted from service.

Unfortunately there will be other similar examples, but it’s interesting although tragic to know there was at least one New Zealand experience similar to the Private Ryan story.

Some readers will have guessed the inspiration for my file came from Jack Ross.

I’m not sure if the filing box I saw in his office all those years ago followed him into retirement, but if it didn’t I do know he will have something similar.

Soon after I saw his file Jack started his wonderful series of stories for this paper.

Quite recently he reproduced some of them in book form.

In its preface Jack mentions that he often wrote his weekly columns on a Sunday afternoon, no doubt sometimes referring to his bits and pieces file.

These words have been compiled on a Sunday afternoon after looking at my file of the same name.

Thanks for the inspiration Jack.

Allenton Bowling Club

Town 21.5pts to 14.5pts.

The first championship was decided with the Championship Triples up for grabs. Geoff and Bernice Laird, teaming up with Maurice Sunbeam took out the title with a convincing win in the final 12-5 over Simon and Julie Thomas, along with Maurice Berkeley.

The representative season also kicked off, with Ashburton travelling to Rangiora to take on North Canterbury.

The team was in total control of this fixture right from the first bowl played and took out a convincing victory over North Canterbury by 64 wins to 16.

The second representative fixture was for the Hight Trophy and Calder Shield, which was against Timaru in their own backyard. The team came away with the Calder Shield, winning this 68pts to 44. But were unable to bring the Hight home losing to their counterparts 43pts to 69. The best performers on the day were Bernice Laird and Rowena Mackenzie with 6 wins each out of a possible six.

The Association has held two progressive pairs tournaments over the first month, with the first one being won by Bernice Laird 81.5pts in the skips, followed by Mark Sheard 77.5pts. In the Leads, first was Neil Atkinson 100pts, second Wendy Cullen 79pts.

In the second tournament which was much more well supported was won

by Mike Lawson with 98pts in the skips, second Mark Sheard 88pts and the leads won by Mike Tierney 99pts, followed by Joan Hardy with 88pts.

Also, the Ashburton NZ Mixed Fours has been played more recently with the Lairds once again in the money! The team of Russell Ellis, Geoff and Bernice Laird, along with Gaylene Smith proved too strong for the other competitors, coming out victorious on the day and will represent Ashburton in the zone final to be held in Ashburton on July 2.

Rakaia continues to hold on to the Harper Cup, after seeing off challenges from Lagmhor/Westerfield winning 5-2 and defeating Allenton 6-1. Next challenger is Baring Square.

Good luck for those involved playing against Ellesmere and to the Ladies team travelling to Christchurch!

Ann played it very realistically, you could imagine the dawn and the City -Beautiful. John Davis played The Gold and Silver Waltz and The Cuckoo Waltz to finish another toe-tapping night.

Ashburton Photographic Society We had a busy start to the year with the Open Learning night with a number of new faces along to learn the basics of using your camera. This has led to an increase of members, something that is always a good thing.

Our first field trip was to the Domain which is a wonderful location, full of opportunities to take photos.

Lions Club of Hinds & Districts The May Tea Meeting of members and guests, bolstered by eight ladies visiting from Geraldine District Lionesses Club were all welcomed by President David Keeley who then introduced the first speaker, Ms Vicky McIntyre, Principal of Hinds School. Vicky thanked the club for two recent grants which the school put towards pupils swimming lessons and camp fees.

The second speaker, Tom Kearney (left) from CFA, then spoke about his recent purchase of the company, his aims and objectives and outlined the company’s services assisting farmers with feed assessment, water testing and other laboratory services. After questions from the floor he was thanked by Lion Garry Brown.

A very enjoyable hot meal followed by dessert and refreshments, provided by Southern Netball Club was then served after which raffles were drawn, misdemeanour fines handed out and club reports presented.

Lion Don McFarlane outlined the manure and firewood working bees completed and gave dates for those yet to be done.

Social Director Lion Willy Leferink spoke about a trip to Ashburton Art Galley to view the Kermadec Exhibition.

Names for those attending other clubs’ June Change-Over meetings were taken before general business was dealt with.

Grey Power Ashburton Inc On Monday May 16 President Jim Burgess welcomed 40 plus members to the Annual General Meeting at the Seniors Centre. Jim introduced the speaker for the afternoon, Jackie Girvan from Presbyterian Support. Jackie spoke of her involvement with the possibility of setting up an Abbeyfields housing project in Ashburton and the local problem of affordable housing in our district for those with limited options and fixed incomes.

The yarn Scramble held at Ashford’s shop was very successful and there will be 2 workshops to follow.

May 28 - Dyeing Wool and June 11 finishing garments. Each day will be 10 - 3p.m. $30 each class at Ashfords.

Names were taken for a flax weaving class at the Marae. Area Exhibition is in Christchurch September 16-22. A team will compete in the Fleece to Garment challenge at Hororata in November.

Margaret, Sue and Shona gave a good report on the Wool Festival at Auckland. Great classes, displays and a parade. Good transport from the airport. The Goodybags were interesting.

Shona bought lovely weaving books for the club and a new Ply magazine too.

A year before our big Wool Festival in Christchurch where two overseas tutors will hold classes. One is a tapestry weaver from Peru and a knitting tutor.

We have a merino challenge next year and at this meeting we were privileged to have Margaret Stove give us a wonderful talk and demonstration on merino spinning.

The Show and Tell table was laden with slippers, socks, baby rugs, gloves, woven stole, baby hats, singlets, scarf felting and spun yarn.

Bernard entertained during afternoon tea.

Annette made it all look so easy. She pointed out the layering of colours.

Joy Churchill thanked Annette for her demonstration. President Bernie concluded the meeting with the Thought For the Day – “You look your best when you smile, there is no beauty like the one that’s inside you.”

Mid Canterbury Ladies’ Probus Club Four visitors were welcomed at the May meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Probus Club, presided over by President Bernie Tutty.

The National Anthem was sung and birthdays and anniversaries celebrated.

One new member was inducted.

Almoner Val Johnson gave a report, and Trip Convener Avis Kingsland told of a proposed bus tour around Ashburton and of the mid-winter luncheon on July 13.

Karen McIntyre introduced the Mini Speaker, Dorothea Webb, coordinator of the volunteers at the Hospital.

The Friends of the Hospital was instigated in 1976. Dorothea told of the quality time they are able to spend with patients.

They visit Ward 1, Ward 6 and Tuarangi, and have sing-a-longs and take patients to the chapel service, sometimes feed patients.

The service relies on donations and bequests. They have 48 volunteers, and average 100 hours of work each month.

Ann Truman thanked Dorothea for her informative talk.

Mid Canterbury Men’s Probus Since our meeting last month two of our members have sadly passed away.

President Doug led a minute’s silence for Max Fitzgerald and Ross Seed.

Don Hopwood reported on our bus trip to the Westpac Open Day demonstration of rescue equipment held at Christchurch Airport. This was enjoyed by a full bus load of members and wives.

Jim Small then gave a mini-talk on his life in Ashburton. After attending Ashburton Tech Jim joined the Ashburton Power Board in 1951 where he spent his whole working life until retirement in 1997. His work was varied and at times difficult such as when confronted with restoring power lines in the back country brought down by snow.

Our main speaker was Karen Breakwell, Manager of Ashburton Wastebusters.

They began recycling under contract to the Ashburton District Council in 1995.

After losing this contract in 2004 the Trust shifted from the Resource Recovery Park to their present site in the Industrial Estate.

Although no longer receiving funding from the council they have remained viable by keeping things simple and seeking the best market for high quality recycled products.

Polystyrene is one such example which they crush, melt down and extrude into a valuable plastic. Their operation is now recognised throughout the country as an exemplar for efficient and selfsustaining recycling.

Meredith Lowe thanked our speaker and President Doug reminded members our next meeting is June 21.

This was most interesting.

We were told about soil preparation, over-winter storage, spring planting, earwig prevention, disbudding for show purposes and suitable fertiliser. Then Mr Gunn told us about his many years as a Show Judge for the National Dahlia Society of which he is a Life Member. We were informed about the various types

In brief Adams apologises Oklahoma City centre Steven Adams has apologised for describing Golden State’s guards as “quick little monkeys” in an interview with ESPN following the Thunder’s 108-102 win over the Warriors in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals. The Kiwi told USA Today Sports that differences in the use of language in his home country led to his poor choice of words. Adams explained that he “was just trying to express how difficult it was chasing those guys around”. He says he didn’t know it was going to upset anyone and is “truly sorry”. He says he’s still getting used to different words and expressions and “trying to figure out the boundaries”, but adds that he “definitely overstepped them”.

Southern’s premier debut

Southern will make their first ACL Premier Grade Netball appearance this evening when they take on Hampstead A in the opening week of round two.

Southern were promoted to the premier grade following an unbeaten run in premier grade two.

Southern will take the place of Rakaia, who have been relegated following a string of losses, despite a gutsy effort in the district’s elite netball competition.

The final nail in Rakaia’s coffin came in the form of a 37-30 loss to Ashburton College A last week.

A dominant third-quarter performance from College A was the undoing of Rakaia and set the young College side up for a come-from-behind win.

Rakaia produced their strongest start of the season in a valiant display, thanks, in part, to coach Brans Surridge starting at goal shoot, but it wasn’t enough to save their premier status.

Last week’s action also produced the shock of the season,

with Methven failing to collect maximum points for the first time in a 23-23 stalemate with United A. United squared things up at 22-all with five minutes to play, before taking the lead 23-22.

But an unfazed Methven struck straight back to make it 23-all and that’s how it finished up.

Methven will lock horns with Ashburton College tonight in a replay of last year’s final, but will take confidence into the clash having already beaten College twice this term.

Meanwhile, Celtic will be in action against United.

Ange Leadley’s Greens downed Hampstead 26-18 in a classy display last week and will be favourites on paper to notch another win.

Young talent to the fore for Tall Blacks An avalanche of absences has left the Tall Blacks banking on young talent to contribute to their Olympic aspirations.

Three debutants have been selected in the 14-man squad to prepare for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying tournament in Manila, with head coach Paul Henare naming a squad with an average age of 25.

Ethan Rusbatch, Finn Delany and Michael Karena will all pull on the black singlet for the first time, being rewarded for impressive performances in the New Zealand National Basketball League.

The quartet has been given their chance after nine former or prospective Tall Blacks all ruled themselves unavailable for selection.

Kirk Penney and Lindsay Tait called quits on their storied international careers in the week leading up to the squsd announcement, while Dion Prewster, Alex Pledger, Leon Henry, Duane Bailey, Jack Salt, Tai Wynyard and Steven Adams were all unavailable for various reasons.

That left Henare with little choice but to plump for youth, injecting the squad with a rejuvenated yet untested look.

While Rusbatch and Delany are all starring at the NBL level, Karena is the bolter in the bunch.

The centre recently finished his college career at Wright State, and has put in mixed showings with the Canterbury Rams since returning to New Zealand.

Karena is currently averaging

7.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game on 48 per cent shooting, and has been prone to defensive lapses.

However, he is potent offensively and Henare says he provides much-needed size with the absence of four legitimate centre options from the squad.

“He’s a big strong lad and he’s a big strong body and that’s something that we are always looking for.”

Henare says form is now vital to being picked in the squad, with the upcoming time crunch of the international schedule not lending itself to trials.

“I wanted to make it clear to everyone playing in the New Zealand league, to all our guys in the college system and playing overseas, that your form in

whatever competition you are playing are essentially your Tall Blacks trials.”

While the array of absences creates deserving opportunities for rising talent, it also significantly reduces the Tall Blacks’ chances of qualifying for the Olympics.

A tough path requires the Tall Blacks to eclipse the likes of France, Turkey and Canada to claim the one available spot in Rio; nations which would all be objectively be favoured to win a potential matchup.

No news is good news for the New Zealand Olympic Committee. It hasn’t been notified by the IOC that any New Zealand athletes are among the 31 alleged-dopers from 12 nations facing bans from the Rio Olympics, after samples from the Beijing Games were re-tested. An NZOC spokesperson says they’re confident no New Zealand athletes have been implicated and would expect to have heard by now.

Power and endurance athletes will make up the bulk of the 31 athletes, with many of those being Russian. The IOC has stated any athletes who could be promoted to a medal position because of the disqualification of others will also be re-tested.

Carlos Takam gets testy

By Patrick Mckendry Carlos Takam is ready with a smile, but the man Joseph Parker has described as a “little tank” has a steely side, too, and it was on show yesterday at an occasionally awkward press conference featuring the pair at a South Auckland fast food restaurant.

The 35-year-old, who has been a professional boxer for 12 years, clearly marches to his own beat. That is admirable, but, although there is mutual respect between him and New Zealander Parker ahead of their IBF world title eliminator at Manukau on Saturday – a fight

It began when the French Cameroon fighter – speaking through an interpreter – bristled

at a question he had been sparring with Junior Fa, a 26-yearold heavyweight from Papakura at the start of his professional career, responding with: “Who told you that?”

“I’d like to know where you heard that and then I’ll give you my answer.”

Eventually, Takam said: “Yes, I sparred with him. I really appreciated the time he took to spar with me. It went well. It wasn’t necessarily a secret, but also I wasn’t necessarily wanting to let everyone know.”

The stakes are high for both men but they are probably higher for Takam. Victory on Saturday opens the door to a poten-

tial big-money fight against IBF champion Anthony Joshua in London, and for Takam, who is nearing the end of his career, it is last-chance territory.

Asked whether he was prepared to be hurt after coming through his previous 18 professional fights undefeated, Parker said: “I have a lot of respect for Carlos and what he’s done in his career. I’m definitely excited about fighting someone like Carlos, who is going to be a good name on my record if I beat him.”

Takam said: “With time, he is going to be one of the best. But right now I’m here to win.”

Bowls NZ, centres at odds over membership fees

Bowls New Zealand is running into some resistance from its centres over their proposed change to membership fees and will struggle to pass the motion at Monday’s Special General Meeting.

The sport’s governing body was hoping to lock in a new membership fee structure that would see clubs pay a fee based on their 2014 membership numbers over the next three years. The plan would give Bowls New Zealand some certainty around its income over that time period but the clubs are reluctant to agree to it as falling memberships would see clubs paying greater fees.

“The Northern Region – these are all the centres from the Waikato up to the top of the North Island – met up yesterday and everyone is on the same page,” Bowls Auckland General Manager Phil Vyver said.

“It was agreed that there was a lot of potential benefit from this proposed system in that it frees things up from a club point of view. They currently get charged a per member fee rather than a club fee so it frees the club to collect that money however they want.

“The downside, and where we think there needs to be more discussion before it gets adopted, is that there is uneasiness

That is simply because for those clubs that have lost members you are then paying more than what you would be than if it was done on a per-person base.”

Memberships across the country are trending down as more and more people prefer to play the game casually. Overall playing numbers are up meaning casual pay-for-play bowlers are becoming more prevalent.

Finding a way to get those players to contribute to the overall membership fee is a new challenge facing the sport.

There are a couple of other issues around the new proposals that the clubs are unsure about. One aspect is how to deal with clubs that amalgamate and another is Bowls NZ’s insistence that every person that steps on a green to play must be registered with the national body.

Vyver says the Northern Region centres will opt to vote against the proposal on Monday but insists there is no animosity between the clubs and Bowls NZ. “All of the lower South Island is going to vote against it. I don’t think we are out of step with a fair chunk of the country.”

Vyver believes a compromise could be reached.

Close encounters at Oxford Ashburton College’s senior basketball teams played their part in two exciting games of basketball at the Oxford Street Stadium on Tuesday night, despite not coming out winners.

The girls were on court first for the double-header, against St Andrew’s College, looking for their third win in the Whelan Trophy, but turnovers were ultimately their demise in a 57-52 loss.

The girls were narrowly ahead

at the end of the first half 29-28, however, the defensive pressure from STAC forced too many errors.

This, along with 28 per cent shooting from the field, resulted in a five-point loss for the College girls. Liberty Ross knocked in 17 points, while Ashlee Strawbridge accumulated 14 points.

The senior boys had a tough encounter against Christchurch Boys’ High School, though the visitors did not have it all their own way in their 99-78 win. In fact, the college senior boys were leading the competition favourites 25-19 at the end of the first quarter.

48-39 at halftime. The third quarter was tied 22-all, setting up an exciting final 10 minutes, with the hosts still down by only nine.

Ben Harris stepped up for the visitors with some timely threepointers and they pulled away for the win.

College coach Pip Johnston was not disappointed, saying the opening stanza showed no team could afford to take them lightly in the Thompson Trophy compe-

tition. Mitchel Prendergast top scored for College with 19 points, with support from Thomas O’Brien (14), Josh Lowe (13) and Fletcher Arnold (10). Bigs O’Brien (3O 6D), Lowe and Gareth Hunt (1O 8D) were busy crashing the boards with Lowe notching up a double-double with 11 rebounds (4O 7D).

Another big game awaits next week against Shirley Boys’ High School.
