The number of people overnighting in hotels, motels and holiday parks in the Ashburton District is plummeting, but the falling figures do not tell the whole story, a tourism expert says. The Ministry of Business and Employment commercial accommodation monitor paints a picture of a district where guest nights numbers are dropping and occupancy rates falling. In January, 2014, guest nights hit a high of 23,635; this year they dropped to 17,633 and refused to climb as the year progressed. Ashburton has 38 commercial accommodation businesses with a 41,323-bed capacity. In March 17,789 guest nights were recorded for those beds, giving an occupancy rate for the month of 27.82 per cent.
