Mid Canterbury will get its chance to mourn the victims of last Friday’s terror attacks in Christchurch tonight at a vigil which is being held at the Ashburton Domain Oval at 7pm.

Ashburton District Council yesterday announced the event would be held, stating that it

was intended to bring the community together to mourn those who have lost lives and show solidarity with our families, the Muslim community and with the people of Christchurch.

“I know I speak for the people of the Ashburton District when I say how much we want

to come together and support our Muslim community and our Christchurch neighbours,” Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said.

“This vigil is a sign of our compassion and deepest condolences,” she said.

The Ashburton District Coun-

cil has been liaising with leaders in the local Muslim community about the vigil and while there is no expectation for them to attend, an invitation has been formally extended.

Mid Cantabrians in mourning Colleagues in shock Kamel Darwish was excited about visiting the Masjid Al Noor in Christchurch for Friday prayers when he left his workplace at Hinds last week.

But that was to be the last time his employer and colleagues saw the father of three.

Aged in his late 30s, Darwish was among those shot dead at the Deans Avenue mosque.

He was a popular employee, admired by his co-workers for his diligence.

His boss Dietmart Kopetschny said yesterday everyone at the dairy farm share-milked by him and his wife Bex were in shock.

“It’s obviously a great tragedy, it’s a complete surprise, it’s really knocked the guys around, and my wife.”

Darwish was one of four staff.

From Jordan, he had moved here about six months ago, and proven himself to be diligent and hardworking. He loved New Zealand, and was planning to bring his wife and family here.

The small team on the 285-hectare property was boxing on, milking the cows each day, and just trying to support each other.

Bex had put a donation box at nearby Hinds Mechanical Services yesterday for donations for his family, with the message “Please help to show we care”.

Imran Khan’s death widely felt Kamel Darwish on their counter was the least they could do.

Kopetschny said he had not even known Darwish was visiting Christchurch at the time of the attack. But they became aware later in the day as the tragedy unfolded and word came back that Darwish may have been there.

TV footage showed Darwish’s brother Zuhair was among those caught up in the panic after the attack. Standing at a cordon near Masjid Al Noor, he sought information from police about his little brother.

Zuhair later told media it was he who had convinced Darwish to move here, considering New Zealand was a safe place to raise a family. Darwish rarely made it to Friday prayers, so had been “very excited” about attending last week.

News of Imran Khan’s death continues to send shockwaves through Mid Canterbury.

The 46-year-old restaurateur, whose namesake is a former celebrity cricketer and current Pakistani president, was among those gunned down at the Linwood mosque.

Khan was well regarded in the wider Ashburton community as he got to know many through his warm personality at Indian Minar on East Street and Nando’s on Burnett Street.

Khan established Indian Minar in 2007, and it was Mid Canterbury’s first ever Indian restaurant.

Today it continues as a successful business and legacy to Khan’s hard work, and is operated by his good friend Krishna Sapkota, who bought it from him in 2014.

Sapkota happened to be at his Arjee Bhajee restaurant on Riccarton Road at the time of the attack, just 100 metres away from the Deans Avenue mosque.

He was to be catering for the Bangladesh cricketers at Hagley Oval, so was busy cooking for them at the time.

“Suddenly we go out and see everyone is scared and running away, saw the blood everywhere, people with no sandals, running away and crying,” Sapkota said.

Sapkota is originally from Nepal and of Hindu faith, but has

many Muslim friends.

He said Khan had been one of these, and he had known him for about 15 years. It was a shock to have this happen and he was still struggling to come to terms with the tragedy and loss of his good friend and many others.

Heart doctor touched many lives at Ashburton Hospital

Ashburton Hospital staff remember Amjad Hamid as a doctor who touched many lives.

The Canterbury District Health Board is not commenting officially at this stage as the heart doctor has not been confirmed as deceased, he is still classed as missing presumed deceased.

“Amjad was a special man,” said one person at the hospital as she and her colleagues fear the worst.

Originally from Palestine, Hamid hasn’t been seen since Friday and his family believe he is dead.

His wife, Hanan Hamid, said she and her husband migrated to Christchurch 23 years ago.

“It’s terrible ... we were hoping to find a better future for us and for the children we were planning to have.”

She described the 57-year-old as a “very kind man”, but strug-

The oldest of the couple’s two sons, 22-year-old Husam Hamid, said family had checked hospitals and with police but there had been no sign of his dad since the a shootings.

“We are presuming that he is dead, but we don’t know.”

According to his LinkedIn profile, Hamid was a consultant in cardiorespiratory integrated spe-

cialist services at Canterbury District Health Board for 20 years.

“This is meant to be a safe country. New Zealand is changing forever.”

His mother was “struggling”, he said.

“My mum, she loves him so much.”

Youngest son, Mohammed Hamid, 20, said he wanted to say only one thing: “I just really loved my dad.”

Locals pay their respects at Masjid

As the district moves in to another working week, reminders still exist across the district of our tragic connections to the Christchurch terrorist attack.

An ever-growing collection of tributes adorn the fence in front of the Ashburton Masjid, some of which were recent additions by the Ashburton Indian Multicultural Charitable Trust who were acknowledging the passing of friend and restaurateur Imran Khan, and the 49 others who lost their lives.

“We can’t travel to Christchurch so we have come here to pay our respects,” president Bikash Sukul said.

A crowd of around 20 people gathered as they placed a collection of flowers and a card on behalf of the group, with Sukul thanking everyone for coming to pay their respects after the sad and tragic events that occurred in Christchurch.

Around the corner from the Masjid, staff at Tinwald School faced the difficult task of dealing with the stressful time with their students.

Principal Peter Livingstone said the day began with a staff briefing, discussing how they would handle the situation, giving the children the chance to do something through a mufti-day on Thursday with the money raised being donated to the families of the victims.

“We have spoken to families and they want us to keep things business as usual,” he said.

Many residents of Ashburton were reminded that there is still a strong police presence in the area after the police Eagle helicopter was active above the town in the early hours of Monday morning.

The Eagle helicopter was twice called to the area to assist police with tracking down vehicles of interest.

“Ashburton Police received a report of a car of interest being driven on SH1 around 11.45pm,” a police spokesman said.

“Police attended and attempted to pull over the vehicle. The driver decided to flee and police followed for a short time be-

fore losing sight of the vehicle at Chertsey. Eagle helicopter assisted enquiries, but no one was located.

The second incident occurred after Timaru police attempted to pull over a vehicle of interest at 12.30am.

The driver decided to flee and police followed for a time before standing down, while still in Timaru.

The vehicle was then spotted by police in the Ashburton area.

The vehicle was spiked on the Ashburton Bridge, and the offenders fled on foot.

A dog unit and the Eagle helicopter assisted in locating and arresting a man and woman.

A 19-year-old woman and a 24-year-old-man are due to appear in Timaru District Court on Tuesday, April 16 charged with driving related offences.

Many residents of the town took to Facebook to voice their frustrations at the unexplained noise, but police have said they are going to be more visible on the streets, around businesses, schools, and in the air in the interest of allowing people to resume their normal routines.

“Following the terror attack on Friday, I am fully aware that many people will want to return to their routines,” police commissioner Mike Bush said.

“The public wants to go back to school, work, their recreational activities, etc. It’s the role of New Zealand Police to enable people to do that.

“That is why people in Christchurch will notice that police are highly visible – on the streets, around businesses, schools, and in the air.”

Surgeries postponed Christchurch Hospital is postponing a significant number of surgeries planned for Cantabrians and others to free up theatre space and surgical teams. The hospital has good capacity and is well staffed, however, those injured in the mosque attacks are the Canterbury District Health Board’s priority for surgery and other specialist care over the coming days. “We currently have 31 patients who were injured in the mosque attacks in Christchurch Hospital. Two people were well enough to go home and have been discharged today,” chief executive David Meates said yesterday. “There are still nine in a critical condition in intensive care.

There is still a four-year-old girl in a critical condition in Starship Hospital in Auckland, transferred there on Saturday. Her father has also been transferred to Auckland and remains in a serious but stable condition.

Gem has good genes and works hard, says her owner Bill Nicholas.

The seven-year-old heading eye dog came out a winner alongside Nicholas at the Methven A&P Show dog trials on Saturday.

Nicholas has been working dogs much of his life, and that is a long time, considering he is now 93.

Gem rates among the top of his many canine charges over the years, something he put down to her good breeding with a champion father.

“And she’s a natural worker,” Nicholas said.

The retired musterer lives in Methven, and started trialling about 25 years ago. His favourite events are on hill country, as that is the landscape he is used to working following his long shepherding career.

“I would rather do the hill events instead of playing around on the flat,” he said.

Gem was the perfect dog for this.

“It’s harder to get a good dog on the hill that’s going to head sheep, especially merinos,” he said.

But the duo’s skill is just as good on the plains, and he and Gem were big winners at the Methven show, including bringing home the prestigious AJ Wilson Challenge Cup for the open dog trial class.

They also won at the Mayfield Show the weekend before, and have been competing in standard open events in Canterbury. A fourth at the Methven trials earlier this month saw Nicholas qualify for the South Island Championships, which will be in May at Hanmer Springs.

Nicholas said he would like to ultimately win an open.

While not overly confident of doing so, he would have a lot of

fun trying, he said.

Others competing on Saturday included Hugh Weir, a legend in the Methven dog trialling world.

He clocked up a third in the District Maiden, and a second in the Mayfield and Methven Collie Club Prize – Maiden.

The 87-year-old retired Methven farmer has been a regular, alongside brother Ted who has now retired from the sport, at events going back to the 1940s.

In 1984 he won the New Zealand Tux Dog Show and has competed in numerous New Zealand run-offs.

“I have always been keen on working dogs. I have seen a lot of country I would not have seen if I hadn’t been in dog trials, and made a lot of friendships out of it,” Weir said.

Weir and Nicholas were among a large field of entries at the Methven Show.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says there will be a national memorial event to commemorate those who were killed in Friday’s terror attack in Christchurch. Although she has not set a date yet, Ardern confirmed it would not be this week. She told her post-Cabinet press conference yesterday that it was important to give the families affected by the shooting has the opportunity to grieve. “What we want to ensure is that we allow the time and the space for the families to be able to bury their loved ones; keeping in mind that some have not yet received their loved ones.”

But she would be looking to announce a date “as soon as I am able”. “I anticipate making an announcement in that regard soon.”

Students in the Lauriston and Methven areas now have a new schooling option thanks to some innovative and co-operative thinking by two school principals.

The schools are part of the Methven area bus network that ferries children to three primary schools – Lauriston, Methven and Our Lady of the Snows, but there was an anomaly in the routes that saw Lauriston missing out on potential students, principal Colin Brodie said.

The runs enabled students from his patch to have the choice of attending school in Methven, but there was no provision for students who wanted to make the reverse trip to attend Lauriston school, he said.

Brodie knew there were families who wanted that option, some who had moved after their children started school at Lauriston and others living in Methven who wanted a more rural-based education for their children.

In terms of options, it wasn’t an even playing field for both schools, Brodie said.

Some parents were providing their own transport to bring children to the school but he knew there had to be a way to open the option up to more families by providing a privately funded school bus.

His said his focus was solely on creating

equal opportunities for both Methven and Lauriston students.

“It’s about parity for our communities to do the things they need to do and believe are right as a family.”

He discussed the option of a parent funded bus with Methven principal Chris Murphy and explained what he intended to do and why.

“It’s all very friendly. It’s about options and it’s an option for the two schools to work together and we already had those families who were transporting their own children,” he said.

“It’s about us working together and that’s the strength of Mid Canterbury schools, particularly us and Methven Primary, we can work together.”

The optional bus service was also about Lauriston and Methven schools having equal access to the same pool of students, Brodie said.

Riding the Methven to Lauriston bus costs $200 a year, or $50 per term per child.

“We’ve resourced this in a way that’s affordable for people and we’ve got families saying, thanks for doing this.”

There are currently 12 children using the parent funded service which operates outside the area’s bus group.

Numbers are now at a level where a larger vehicle will soon be needed.

Mark of respect before business The Ashburton District Court began its business yesterday with a minute’s silence to remember Friday’s mosque massacre in Christchurch.

Judge Joanna Maze asked lawyers, court staff and people sitting in the public gallery to stand in silence before the court began its working day.

“This is an institution that deals with violence and the victims of violence so we will observe a minute’s silence as a mark of respect for members of our wider community that have lost their lives so violently on Friday,” she said.

The day’s list was the usual mix of people facing a variety of alleged crimes that included violence against other people.

Waiau farmer Scott Graeme Higginson, 33, admitted charges of assault, resisting police and shoplifting after a drunken incident at an Ashburton service station in the early hours of February 24 when he grabbed the shirt of an employee and shoved him.

The employee activated the station’s fog cannons and police were alerted.

Judge Maze said the service station worker had been vulnerable,

He was then asked to leave but instead walked up to the employee, grabbed his shirt and pushed him. The fog cannons were activated at that point.

When police arrived, Higginson tried to run but he was tackled to the ground.

His lawyer said he had been at a polo weekend and believed his drink had been spiked. given the time of the incident, which was 2.45am.

People in those sort of jobs, providing a service for the community, needed protection and the court could assist with a sentence that would deter others, she said.

She sentenced Higginson to 80 hours community work and ordered him to make a $200 emotional harm payment to the service station worker. He was also ordered to pay $3.50 for a can of Red Bull he took off the shelf and opened.

Police said a drunken Higginson had asked to use the bathroom; his request was declined.

The employee activated a panic alarm when Higginson walked back to the counter and took the Red Bull.

An 84-year-old Ashburton woman is unlikely to drive again after crashing her car in the carpark of a rest-home and injuring another elderly driver.

Helen Henrietta Pope had admitted a charge of careless driving when she appeared yesterday for sentencing. She was convicted, disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to pay $2000 to the woman she injured.

Pope’s licence was suspended by the New Zealand Transport Agency after the crash last November and the court was told her family would not support her regaining her licence after a medical review.

Pope was leaving the rest-home carpark when she hit a parked car and then rear-ended the victim’s car, pushing it across a busy res-

idential street.

The elderly driver of the other car suffered serious injuries to her lower legs and needs ongoing care.

Callum Graham pleaded guilty to a charge of intentional damage that arose when he came home with a friend after a night out drinking.

He woke his mother while looking for something to eat in the kitchen and was told to leave.

He dislodged the pantry door and pushed his mother then later smashed a window and broke some outdoor furniture.

He was remanded to April 29 for sentence.

An 85-year-old Ashburton man who admitted two historical charges of indecent assault was sentenced to 12 months’ intensive supervision.

The man, who has name suppression, has also been ordered to attend counselling if required by his probation officer.

The offending took place in the North Island in the 1960s when the victim was under 10 years old.

Judge Maze said the man would have been sent to prison for up to

12 months if he had been convicted at the time of the offending.

But that was no longer appropriate because of the man’s age and the fact his family had little to do with him, she said.

He accepted there had been a breach of trust and the victim was vulnerable.

Damian James Perriton, 42, admitted through his lawyer a charge of unauthorised plumbing laid by the national Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board.

He was remanded to April 29 for sentence.

The details of the offending were not read in court.

Richard Peter Womersley, 35, of Methven, was fined $300 and ordered to pay $130 court costs after being convicted of disorderly behaviour.

Womersley was approached by a police officer at a Methven service station after he had been observed momentarily losing control and not wearing a seat belt.

The discussion quickly turned sour and Womersley admitted yesterday he had been out of line and resisted the officer when he tried to handcuff him.

Operations manager appointed Ara’s campus in Ashburton has a new operations manager.

Leonie Rasmussen started her new role recently as operations manager for not only Ashburton, but Oamaru and Timaru.

Ara chief executive Tony Gray said Rasmussen was responsible for overseeing day-to-day campus operational activities in the three southern campuses as well as liaising with some of the many external stakeholders and colleagues.

“It’s been obvious for some time that our Southern campuses and the communities they serve need a managerial role that provides a day-to-day contact point.

“Creating this role to co-ordinate operational matters and as a contact point for our many regional stakeholders, allows us to continue to build our relationships in Oamaru, Timaru and Ashburton.

“This is going to be a very versatile role and I’m sure Leonie with her knowledge and experience of working within the region and the polytechnic sector over the past five years, will quickly make a difference in the day-to-day operations of the southern campuses,” Gray said.

Rasmussen said she was excited about the new opportunity and the challenges ahead. She will be based in Timaru, but spend days at the Ashburton and Oamaru campuses.

“I am looking forward to creating more success stories in Oamaru, Timaru and Ashburton and that I am able to continue working with my colleagues plus maintaining our stakeholder relationships,” she said.

Flash floods kill at least 58 Flash floods and mudslides triggered by days of torrential downpours tore through mountainside villages in Indonesia’s eastern-most province, killing at least 58 people and leaving thousands homeless, disaster officials said yesterday.

Rescuers recovered more bodies as floodwaters and landslides destroyed roads and bridges in several areas of Papua province’s Jayapura district, hampering rescue efforts, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman.

The dead included three children who drowned after the floods began just after midnight Saturday.

Nugroho said 58 bodies had been pulled from the mud and wreckage of crumpled homes.

Another 74 people were hospitalised, many with broken bones and head wounds.

Nugroho said the number of dead and injured will likely increase since many affected areas have not been reached.

“We are overwhelmed by too many injuries,” said Haerul Lee, the head of the Jayapura health office, adding that some medical facilities had been hit by power outages. “We can’t handle it alone.”

Worst hit was Sentani subdistrict, where a landslide was followed minutes later by a river that burst its banks, sweeping away residents in a fast-moving deluge of water, heavy logs and debris, said the local disaster mitigation agency head, Martono.

Martono, who goes by a single name, said rescuers have

been evacuating more than 4000 to temporary shelters as more than 300 houses damaged.

He said that rising flood water forced Sentani airport to temporarily close after a runway was flooded and water damaged the power system and two small planes parked at the airport.

Television footage showed hundreds of rescuers and members of the police and military evacuating residents

to shelters at a government office. Others were carrying bodies in black and orange body bags. Ambulances and vehicles were seen carrying victims on muddy roads to several clinics and hospitals.

Seasonal downpours cause frequent landslides and floods and kill dozens each year in Indonesia, a chain of 17,000 islands where millions of people live in mountainous areas or near fertile flood plains.

DNA evidence unmasks Jack the Ripper The identity of Jack the Ripper has remained a mystery for more than 130 years.

But sensational new DNA evidence points to a 23-year-old Polish barber as the likely mass killer who roamed the streets of Victorian London and murdered at least five women.

Tests by scientists on DNA samples taken from a bloodstained shawl from one of the victims purports to show that Polish immigrant Aaron Kosminski was the killer.

The identity was confirmed by researchers from Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Leeds who shared their findings in the Journal of Forensic Sciences, the Daily Mail reported.

They wrote: “We describe for the first time systematic, molecular level analysis of the only surviving physical evidence linked to the Jack the Ripper murders.

“Finding both matching profiles in the same piece of evi-

dence enhances the statistical probability of its overall identification and reinforces the claim that the shawl is authentic.”

The analysis provided a match between murdered victim Catherine Eddowes and Kosminski’s living descendants.

In 2014, Kominski was linked to the killer when Dr Jari Louhelainen, one of the authors in this week’s paper, studied the same shawl.

But his claims were rubbished by other scientists who said he made made an “error of nomenclature” in his analysis.

However, despite the revelation, critics have questioned whether the shawl is viable evidence, claiming there is no proof it was alongside Eddowes’ body, and that it might have been contaminated over time.

Businessman Russell Edwards, 48, who bought the shawl at auction in 2007, contacted the university scientists several years ago.

Eddowes was one of five women murdered in 1888 in the Whitechapel area of London.

She was slaughtered on the night of September 30, 1888, in Mitre Square, Whitechapel.

Eddowes was the second woman to have died at the hands of Jack the Ripper that night – he had slit Elizabeth Stride’s throat an hour earlier.

As Stride’s throat was cut but her body left relatively untouched, it’s thought the killer had been disturbed and made his escape before being able to finish what he had started.

Seventies rock star Cooper said he’s never seen Depp look happier or better, and said the media have incorrectly painted Depp as going through “total destruction and ready to die”. “All the stuff you heard last year about Johnny, 99 per cent was just bull,” Cooper said.

“Almost everything I read about Johnny Depp was absolutely untrue.”

Our chance to stand together

C

ertain key moments in your life stick with you forever – you know exactly where you were, what you were doing, who was with you and how you reacted.

Everyone can remember where they were the day the Christchurch earthquake struck on February 22 or what they were doing when news first came through of the terror attacks on 9/11.

Events in Christchurch on Friday afternoon will evoke similar emotions in years to come for so many people when they think back on the day that our region and our country changed forever.

Many will have been sitting unaware at their desk or in their office, others were in cars travel-

ling across the country and some were at the very epicentre of the tragedy, living through the devastating scenes, imprints being made that will never be able to be erased.

My story and memories will be a little different.

I was in the high country.

Kilometres away with no real cellphone reception, blissfully unaware and enjoying the special moments of my sister’s wedding

at Glenfalloch Station up above the Rakaia Gorge. The entire situation felt unreal.

With minimal to no reception or connection to the outside world that far away from civilisation it was hard to be able to fully comprehend exactly what was happening.

For most, if not all, of those who were up for there for the nuptials it wasn’t until returning back down and into coverage that the true reality of what had happened began to hit home.

To say the full extent of the news upon return was mind-blowing would be the ultimate understatement.

We’d had word of something having happened, but the details were sparse and very much

secondhand in nature.

Had we known what was happening a mere 140km away from where we stood and celebrated, I feel the general feeling of peacefulness and happiness that usually comes with a wedding would have felt completely different.

In some ways I’m happy for my sister and her partner that it didn’t become an overpowering moment on their special day, but there’s also the guilt of being in such a happy and vibrant situation while the Canterbury region and the rest of New Zealand were left reeling and in utter turmoil at the events which had unfolded.

It’s made it hard to comprehend what those of you down here on the plains have endured and what those initial reactions

to the news must have felt like.

Learning of the full extent of the tragedy so late in proceedings made things a little numb.

But I’m pleased that there is now an opportunity to join with the rest of the Ashburton District tonight to stand in solidarity and show our support to the wonderful Muslim community both here locally and further abroad at the vigil which is being held in the Ashburton Domain Oval.

It’s our chance to stand together as one, to mourn and to pay our respects.

And I know that this community will do so with great presence and emotional power because that is who we are.

Let’s stand together Mid Canterbury.

Open season on the good will of farmers T

he next few weeks will see shotguns and Swanndris dusted off across the country in anticipation of the upcoming duck-shooting season.

Opening day is a big deal in rural New Zealand, with 40,000 annual participants that come from both town and country. All these hunters need somewhere to shoot, and for the majority this is a pond on private farmland, secured with nothing more than a handshake.

The other common factor is that shooters must buy a Fish and Game duck shooting licence.

At about $100 a throw, Fish and Game sell the rights to shoot gamebirds to the tune of several million dollars a year. A recent Fish and Game survey showed that 30 per cent of respondents felt that licence fees were excessive. Many others did not know what Fish and Game did for their fee. So what exactly does the shooter and fisher get for their money?

cence-holders to shoot ducks and catch trout. This is intrinsically linked with farms and farming. Many of the ducks shot each season are hatched, fattened and shot on farm ponds, drains and waterways. Many trout fishers also rely on the good will of farmers to access their favourite local fishing spot. You could easily think that a healthy relationship between landowners and those wanting access would be essential to securing the future of hunting and fishing in New Zealand.

Fish and Game don’t seem to think so. Instead they refuse to acknowledge the ever-growing environmental efforts of the majority of New Zealand farmers. Habitat is key for New Zea-

land’s largely introduced game species and Fish and Game are a vocal advocate for the protection of these natural resources. During this advocacy process, Fish and Game has set its sights solely on one target, the New Zealand farmer.

The average farmer feels like they can’t do a thing right in the eyes of Fish and Game. Little to no recognition of their efforts to manage effluent, to fence off waterways, plant streams, retire land or build sediment and nutrient-holding wetlands. Fish and Game has identified the farmer as its target, and it refuses to stop pulling the ‘trigger’. Recent media against farming saw Fish and Game siding with SAFE, an animal rights activist group that actively campaigns to ban duck shooting. This must have had even the most ardent Fish and Game supporter scratching their head.

Does Fish and Game see this constant attack as helpful to the future survival of their sport?

Licence sales are on the decline, yet there seems to be no consideration that its constant negative press may be driving people away from the outdoors. Some shooters struggle

to find a hunting spot, but why would a farmer welcome you on when your parent organisation criticises every move they make.

Farming and hunting and fishing have a long history together, so why is Fish and Game trying so hard to drive them apart?

The majority of farmers like to see friends and associates enjoying their land. They are proud of their properties and want to share it with those they trust, but by doing so this duck shooting season, they know they are helping to line the pockets of those who are actively undermining the agricultural industry.

Farmers have heard the environmental message and are doing something about it on an ever-increasing scale. Criticism can be helpful, but only when it is coupled with praise. Just this week, Fish and Game’s chief executive has written a column for Farmers’ Weekly in which he says his organisation is not anti-farmer, but anti-polluter. This is a welcome change of tone.

It’s time for Fish and Game to shift its aim and come help plant some trees, build some fences and maybe even a bridge. As any farmer or hunter will tell you, even the most headstrong dog goes better with an occasional pat.

We already have them in the existing library, museum and art gallery when it rains) B) Meets the community’s needs for generations to come (unlike the existing buildings which have not, a prop-

erly constructed building used to last for 100 years, why can’t they now?) and C) Will not fall down in earthquakes.

Also, there is no point in building meeting rooms in the library if the ridiculously high cost of hiring them means they will not be used, as was the case with the

existing library.

An extra $52 per annum added on to urban rates when added on to the already escalating increases averaging at least 6 per cent compounding yearly is, for many householders, a significant increase, certainly not a trivial amount.

Bees better understood following two and a half year study Biosecurity New Zealand has completed taking samples for the largest and most detailed study of honey bee health carried out in New Zealand.

More than 60 beekeepers have participated in the Bee Pathogen Programme and had their hives tested every six months for two and a half years.

Biosecurity New Zealand senior scientist Dr Richard Hall said the research would provide a wealth of valuable information to the beekeeping industry.

“The Bee Pathogen Programme will help us better understand the effect that diseases, climate and apiary management practices have on colony losses and productivity,” he said.

“We have completed sampling and our experts have begun carefully evaluating the huge amount of data that has been collected. This includes studying more than 130,000 honey bees from 300 samples taken throughout the country that are now archived in Biosecurity New Zealand’s freezers.

Once the data was evaluated it would be available to beekeepers and researchers for further analysis, he said.

Biosecurity New Zealand is aiming to release its conclusions from the Bee Pathogen Programme later this year.

Hall said Biosecurity New Zealand was grateful to beekeepers participating in the research programme and the inspectors who did the fieldwork.

More is known about the health of honey bees after an in-depth study.

Alliance invests big in pet food

Meat processing co-operative Alliance Group has invested $15 million for a 50 per cent stake in a pet food company.

Alliance’s agreement with Scales Corporation will result in it taking an even share of the New Zealand business of Scale’s subsidiary Meateor.

Meateor is a processor and marketer of upmarket pet food ingredients to global pet food customers and the deal extends Alliance’s interest in pet food as it supplies materials to the sector.

The new joint venture business is valued at $30m.

Alliance chief executive David Surveyor said the investment in Meateor reflected the co-operative’s strategic focus on creating value-add solutions for its farmer shareholders.

He said the joint venture provided it with an end-to-end connection with a highly attractive and growing global pet food market.

“It will mean Alliance can capture more value for each animal, shifting us further up the value chain. As a co-operative, we will

be ensuring those gains go to our farmer-shareholders.’’

He said the investment also gave it the leading position in the New Zealand pet food market with Meateor operating processing plants in both the North and South islands.

The partners were keen to further develop and grow the business, said Surveyor.

He said the investment would deliver immediate earnings for Alliance and its farmer shareholders.

“The investment coincides with a time of major growth in the

global pet food industry.

“Global sales in the sector are forecast to reach up to $134 billion by 2022 and we want to make sure New Zealand farmers are a part of this growth.’’

Surveyor said pet owners around the world were becoming increasingly focused on pet health and food quality.

Scales Corporation managing director Andy Borland said the venture would help the pet food industry improve its scale and relationships with customers and move into higher value and added value ingredients.

MARKET REPORT

BY GUY TRAFFORD Recently the consultancy group TDB Advisory Ltd published their response to the Northington Partners November report looking at the financial performance of Fonterra and then comparing it against its major New Zealand based competitors.

With the benefit of more transparency of the latest Fonterra accounts and having the Northington report as a resource, they have been able to separate the NZ core of ingredients from the add value (international) sector.

This has confirmed what all producers have known for some time, that is the ingredients side has been carrying the company.

When compared to most other dairy companies New Zealand companies Fonterra is shown to be not performing well, hence the latest reviews and decisions of Fonterra to divest itself of the poorer performers.

TBD have taken the stance that this the correct pathway going forward as the ingredients side is what Fonterra does well, or at least better. However, while in the short term this has to been seen as necessary, I can’t help but wonder if it is seen as a long-term strategy then it is short-sighted. Several facts contribute to this view.

Most agree that New Zealand is at or close to ‘peak milk’ and may even reduce production. Fonterra is currently losing milk share against other competitors and while this will mean further investment into ‘stainless steel’ will be minimal, the capacity of these plants may start to become under-utilised thereby reducing their efficiency.

In the USA demand for milk products is reducing and this for developed countries is becoming a growing trend with other plant based ‘milk’ growing in demand somewhere in the 8 to 10 per cent per year while milk consumption is decreasing at over 1 per cent per year. At this rate of change plant-based milk is likely to overtake fresh milk consumption at around 2035. Which is not long in terms of farm business cycles.

While fresh milk is not a major component of Fonterra’s milk exports when supplying milk products as a commodity to other users they are highly vulnerable to the requirements of these companies, such as Nestle and Danone who will be quick to respond to consumer trends and already such companies are investing in non-animal produced proteins.

Sticking with the commodities trade may require less investment and risk, at the moment, but in the longer term being a price taker with no control on the market may come back to bite. What direction any added value should go is beyond my skill base and obviously China is a difficult market to get right but that doesn’t mean it should not be pursued again but with a little less naivety than in the past.

Hopefully the mistakes made in the past and the additional debt incurred don’t hamstrung the co-op so much that it limits its potential for the future.

On Wednesday Fonterra will be announcing its interim financial result which is expected to include the sale of assets which are aimed to assist in reducing debt by $800 million. The current debt is $6.2 billion.

Dairy While dealing with dairy, the interest.co.nz monitored Oceania dairy price is continuing to show an upward trend with the exception of butter which is holding. The increasing NZ$ against the US$ has reduced a little of the cream, but at least for the time being prices are still heading in the right direction.

Sheep Schedules have held yet again on both the lamb and mutton schedules which is at least a par result. Given the recent rain plus additional irrigated land and what is expected to be a shortage of store lambs around the province, it is likely that a lift in saleyard prices will start to be seen.

Saleyard prices are holding especially for smaller lambs which have ‘scope’ to be taken well into the winter. The supply of ‘finished’ lambs is also likely to reduce helping to push up schedules going forward.

Wool Treading water is the best that can be said regarding wool sales. Limited amounts of finer wools are going through the auction system so difficult to get a feel for them, but coarse wool has held and lamb, given the increasing micron levels, has lifted slightly.

Cattle Despite reports that demand overseas for manufacturing grade beef is strong the cow schedule for several processors continued to fall driven by the supply of cull dairy cows.

This source must be getting close to drying up soon so prices should stabilise and (eventually) start to lift. Limited numbers of prime cattle are coming through the saleyards and the focus will very soon switch to beef weaner sales and given the positive results from the last couple of years, sellers no doubt will have high expectations.

Deer The continuing fall in the price of venison is starting to seriously erode farm profitability and while this is a seasonal trend, the length and depth of this fall is concerning especially given the recent additional markets that should be supporting prices and taking away a lot of the seasonality of demand which was the traditional hallmark of venison.

Back to basics Getting embattled Fonterra “back to basics” has seen some Singapore jobs returned to New Zealand and Fonterra Brands NZ in line for change.

Further to confirming that the major review under way within New Zealand’s biggest company has resulted in redundancies, the Herald has learned some global consumer and food service jobs have been moved back home.

Asked to confirm whether the big dairy co-operative had disestablished its overseas-based marketing and innovation global consumer brands business and moved the function to New Zealand with a small team, the company in a written response said some roles had been transferred from Singapore to New Zealand.

The company would not say how many jobs were affected.

It also confirmed the Herald’s understanding that the Fonterra Brands NZ (FBNZ) business was under review.

“We’re talking to employees in FBNZ about potential changes but no decisions have been made.

“Naturally, supporting our people and making sure they hear from us directly is our priority through this process,” the company said.

As part of the recent appointment of Judith Swales, formerly chief operating officer of “velocity and innovation”, as chief operating officer of global consumer and food service, her former division’s critical business capabilities had been integrated into the wider Fonterra business, the company said.

The “velocity” activity was the brainchild of former

chief executive Theo Spierings, who exited last year.

In December the company announced its corporate affairs and farmer service business Farm Source had been amalgamated.

Fonterra won’t say how many jobs have been lost as its new chief executive Miles Hurrell implements a “back to basics” programme as part of a major internal business review and debt reduction drive promised by its new chairman John Monaghan.

The website of the milk processor and global dairy exporter says it employs 22,000 people worldwide.

The company, which last year posted a historic first annual net loss of $196 million and debt of $6.2 billion, said if there had been significant or material changes as part of the review it would have announced them to the market.

Fonterra, owned by 10,000-or so dairy farmers, has non-voting, dividend-carrying units in farmer shares listed on the sharemarket.

Hurrell recently said the company was making good progress on its review and asset divestments to fulfil a pledge to reduce debt by $800m this financial year.

All eyes will be on the company tomorow when it announces its interim financial results. It is also expected to announce some firm asset sale plans.

Market watchers aren’t optimistic the half year news will be good given the recent announcement no interim dividend will be paid and a decision on any full-year dividend could only be made at the end of the financial year.

Warren Janett from the Aviation Museum is lovingly restoring this 1948 Chrislea Super Ace Airplane. Warren flew in this very plane in 1975 and now is part of a team restoring it. The Chrislea Super Ace was made in England and was one of two planes imported into New Zealand, the second Chrislea ended up in Australia.

he Ashburton Museum archive is always kept busy answering enquiries and assisting people to undertake research on a wide range of topics.

Normally the answers to questions are then stored away in a book or computer, and images purchased from us are hung on a wall or printed and published.

Rarely does the information we provide get incorporated into a significant artwork, but recently that is what happened.

Expat Kiwi Jan Connett visited Ashburton in January to undertake research on Emily Bland, an Ashburton woman who signed the 1893 Suffrage petition. Jan’s purpose was to create a patchwork panel that would be submitted for inclusion in the Suffrage in Stitches project.

This project was instigated by Vinnies Re Sew, a community group run by St Vincent de Paul

in Wellington. Their goal was to create 546 separate panels, each celebrating either a woman who signed the 1893 suffrage petition, or a ‘special woman’ from the past 125 years.

A secondary goal was to expand the skills of makers and to introduce new people to textile crafts and repurposing. One method of repurposing was to use old fabrics and found items, such as postcards.

The panels accepted for inclusion in the project will be combined into one piece the same size as the original petition and exhibited at the Wellington Museum during the period October 2019 to January 2020.

In order to design and execute her panel on Mrs Bland, Jan used a number of archive repositories to gather information and resources, including the Ashburton Library and the Ashburton District Family History Group, as well as our museum archive.

According to Jan, Emily was a larger than life character, interested in photography and technology, and set up a darkroom to develop her photos under a blanket on her dining room table.

Who was Emily?

Emily Watson was born in 1859 in Yorkshire and married William Bland of Orton Green in 1884.

In 1885 the couple had a daughter Dorah (often called Dora).

Sadly, the following year William died as a result of a shooting accident.

Emily continued to run the farm with the help of a manager, however she and her daughter moved back to England so Dora could be properly educated. While there, the dampness which encouraged so many of our ancestors to migrate to New Zealand, claimed the life of poor Dora in 1903. Emily brought her daughter back to Ashburton for burial.

Emily herself died in 1938.

Jan’s project Jan’s work highlights some of the stories associated with Emily, and contains many links to the museum and archive collections and our research services.

The background is a representation of a map that is held in the Ashburton Museum collection that was digitally copied for Jan to work from.

Another image is a print of one from the museum collection, showing sheep crossing a bridge in Ashburton.

The most predominant items depicted are the grave of Dora and a copy of Emily’s signature as it appeared on the suffrage petition.

Archive staff helped Jan find the signature online, enlarge the image and provided a copy for Jan to use as the basis of her embroidery.

Other items worked into the design include found ephemera, discarded notes, damaged

postcards or fabrics found in op shops.

It was certainly a most interesting project for Jan and the museum staff to be involved with and I’m sure most will agree Jan has designed an attractive memorial to one of our local women.

It is also interesting to see how Jan has used found items, destined for the rubbish bin or recycling in her work.

Museum staff often notice how often items in the collection show how people would make do and mend by reusing or upcycling items.

Perhaps this panel may inspire you to also start collecting scraps and other items and plan your own crafty memorial.

Staff here at the museum would certainly be keen to assist in any such project and given the wealth of interesting stories and the vast number of photographs we hold in our archive there’s definitely no shortage of ideas.

Having heard negative comments about finishing in the top six in his past five US PGA Tour events without winning, McIlroy says he is prepared for the noise.

Bottas reveals killer instinct There may have been fighting words from Valtteri Bottas but his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton remains confident his Formula One title defence is on track after a disappointing Australian Grand Prix.

The usually stoic Bottas could not hide his emotions after ending a 22 race winless streak by claiming the season opener, yelling on the team radio: “To whom it may concern f*** you!”.

Bottas hit back at critics who claimed he lacked a “killer instinct” after ending a winning drought that stretched back to November 2017.

Bizarre qualifying Valtteri Bottas hits the pits in his Mercedes on his way to winning the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Austin Dillon won the pole for the NASCAR Cup Series race in Auto Club Speedway after no drivers completed a lap in the final round of qualifying. Dillon got his fourth career pole essentially by default after a bizarre scene that ended with fans booing the drivers when they all waited too long to start their last laps. “I have seen it in other sports, but never seen it in ours,” Clint Bowyer said. “We just got booed.”

“And Valtteri did an exceptional job, so congratulations to him and after that it was just about bringing the car home. That’s how the game goes and I’ll just train and work hard to try and improve the next time.”

Geraldine claims another scalp Making a bust down the sideline during Methven’s second pre-season rugby match at the weekend was Oscar Baisagale, with Nete Caucau in support. While the Canterbury Rugby Union made the call to cancel club rugby around the district following Friday’s terror attack in Christchurch, Sunday’s pre-season game between Methven and Geraldine still went ahead. The game was played in Methven, and a minute’s silence was observed before the game got under way, in memory of those killed and injured in Friday’s attack. Geraldine went on to win the game, having already beaten another Mid Canterbury club - Celtic - earlier in the week. Mid Canterbury teams now had just one more weekend left for pre-season hit-outs, with the combined country cup competition getting under way on March 30.

ABs only stumbling block Former Wales captain Sam Warburton says the All Blacks are the only team he’s worried about from a Welsh perspective at the Rugby World Cup. “If somebody else beat New Zealand and knocked them out of the tournament, as a Welsh fan you would be thinking, ‘Oh my God, this is on’,” Warburton wrote in a column for the Sunday Times.

“Basically New Zealand are the only team I would really worry about Wales playing.

“If it was anyone else at the moment I would back Wales.”

Warburton, who retired last season, heaped the praise on Wales coach Warren Gatland after his final Six Nations game in Cardiff.

“He has simply changed the psychology of the nation.

The Wallabies will play a test against Samoa in western Sydney in September to round off their Rugby World Cup match preparations.

The match on September 7 will be the first rugby test at the new Bankwest Stadium in Paramatta and Australia’s fifth and final match of their build-up to the World Cup, which starts in Japan later that month. Australia have played 17thranked Samoa five times, winning the first four before being upset 32-23 in Sydney in 2011. Polota-Nau recalled Veteran Wallabies hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau’s loan stint with the NSW Waratahs is over, with his English club Leicester recalling him. McKenzie at fullback The Chiefs remain without a win through five rounds, but there were plenty of positive signs for the struggling club in their 23-all draw against the Hurricanes. Damian McKenzie thrived in his return to fullback, and they were able to limit the number of points they conceded. Through the opening rounds, the Chiefs conceded an average of 43 points per game so to hold the Hurricanes to 23 should give them some confidence. Juniors fight it out for the titles

Top finish for Bennett George Bennett has claimed one of the best results in his cycling career.

The Kiwi climber finished 14th on the eighth and final stage of Paris-Nice, to secure sixth place overall, an impressive result on his return to the professional peloton from nearly two months away.

While the result doesn’t carry the significance of his top 10 finishes at the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana, or the symbolism of his 2017 overall victory at the Tour of California, the sixth-place effort is his third best finish at a World Tour stage race, and is notable considering the world class field he was up against.

Twenty-year-old Colombian sensation Egan Bernal won the race by 39 seconds over compatriot Nairo Quintana, who launched an ambitious long-range attack with 40 kilometres to go.

Having previously finished 26th, 58th and 45th in his three prior visits, Bennett rode smartly and strongly in this edition of the famous French race.

This result continues his extreme consistency. Bennett has finished in the top 12 in eight of his last nine stage races, and while a top stage or overall win has eluded him of late, he is part of a rare group of contenders who are competitive in nearly every race they ride.

Up next for Bennett is the Tour of the Basque Country in early April, before a return to the Tour of California in May. - NZME

Allenton’s Linda Osborne was among those rolling up at the Hampstead Bowling Club during the Bowls Mid Canterbury Sub Centre junior open singles qualifying at the weekend.

Play was held at both the Hampstead Bowling Club and Allenton Bowling Club, and nine players qualified to go through to the next stage.

Bruce Redmond topped the standings at the end of qualifying at Hampstead, while Doug Thorne was the day’s top bowler on the Allenton greens.

The junior singles post section play will take place this Saturday.

Robinson stuns the skiing world Kiwi skiier Alice Robinson says that hopefully her silver medal performance in the giant slalom at the World Cup finals in Andorra yesterday morning has provided some ‘good feelings’ back home following the Christchurch mosque shootings.

The 17-year-old finished second behind overall World Cup champion Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States by 0.3 of a second.

Robinson only earned her World Cup finals entry by winning the giant slalom at the junior world championships last month.

Talking to the Radio Sport Breakfast yesterday, Robinson said her thoughts were with people back in New Zealand following the mosque shootings on Friday that killed 50 people.

“It’s been a sad week and everyone was down spirits so I tried really hard to get a good result and maybe put a smile on people’s faces.

“Although everything is going on, try and find some good feelings for everyone,” she said.

Robinson said the conditions were perfect in Andorra with the mountain surface holding up.

“It was just really good conditions. It didn’t break up.

“I was starting last on the first run and there was hardly any bumps or anything.

“Normally a lot of surfaces deteriorate a little bit and this one was really good.

“It was perfect.

“I’ve been skiing really well in training so I was really excited about putting it into a race.

“Unfortunately it’s the last event of the season and it starts up again in October so I can rest a little bit and get ready for the next season.”

The event featured the season’s top 25 skiers.

World Champion Petra Vlhova of Slovakia was third.

The New Zealand prospect got her first career podium when just six months older than Shiffrin was getting her first top-3 finish, in a December 2011 slalom.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Robinson told Swiss broadcaster RTS. “It’s crazy, so cool to share the first podium with Petra and Mikaela.

“They’re such great skiers.”

Shiffrin had plenty of praise for Robinson.

“She did amazing skiing in the first run and she backed it up with a really amazing performance and now she has her first World Cup podium.

“That’s super cool.

“It was the perfect day for her to be able to attack like that and the conditions were amazing.

“Everything was just right there and she took advantage of it and her skiing was awesome.

“It was really really cool.”

It’s been a whirlwind few months for Robinson, who represented New Zealand at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics as a 16-year-old.

She will now head home to Queenstown after four months on the road next week to resume her schooling.

Shiffrin’s 17th World Cup race victory this season also extended her own record for men and women.

At age 24, her 60 career wins trails only 26 behind Ingemar Stenmark’s all-time total.

The American star needed only a top-15 finish on a sun-soaked day in Andorra to ensure closest challenger Petra Vlhova could not overhaul her points total.

Furore extends NZ’s record The Frankie Lor-trained Furore continued New Zealand’s stellar record in the $18 million Hong Kong Derby (2000m) when he took out the Classic race at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Bred in New Zealand by Jonathan Munz under his GSA Bloodstock banner, Furore was born and raised at Haunui Farm and stud principal Mark Chitty said it was a great result for the farm and New Zealand.

“It was a good result for the farm, but a great result for the industry in New Zealand, extending our record in the race (winning six of the last 10 Derbys),” Chitty said.

“It was a superb ride (from jockey Hugh Bowman). Furore has been a bit of an unlucky horse in a couple of big races. The Rosehill Guineas (Gr.1, 2000m)

Furore was sold through Haunui Farm’s 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale draft for $210,000 to Australian Bloodstock and Lees Racing.

“He was just a nice horse, he wasn’t an outstanding horse,” Chitty said, speaking of Furore as a yearling.

“He was a solid nice horse who was well balanced, had a great attitude, a great temperament and was easy to prepare.”

Furore initially raced in Australia for trainer Kris Lees where he ran third in last year’s Rosehill Guineas before his sale to Hong Kong, where he broke through for his maiden stakes victory in the Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) earlier this year.

Mark Chitty The Hong Kong Classic Mile is a leg of the four-year-old triple crown series, which culminates with the Hong Kong Derby, the most prestigious race in the territory and the race every owner wants to win.

Chitty said Munz, who stood ill-fated stallion Ferlax at Haunui Farm, has experienced a great season as a breeder in New Zealand, having also bred Group Two winner and joint New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year, Imelda Mary.

“It should not be lost that Jonathan Munz of GSA Bloodstock bred the horse,” Chitty said.

“Over the weekend they bred the joint NZB Filly of the Year and the Hong Kong Derby winner.”

Chitty said Munz’s faith in New Zealand as an ideal nursery for raising thoroughbreds has paid dividends in recent times.

“All of this has happened on the back of supporting the New Zealand industry.

“This is a great environment to breed thoroughbred racehorses.”

Clean sweep 60mm x 30.7mm

Tessa McCann (left) made it a clean sweep at the weekend’s Gala Cup tournament, by adding the mixed doubles title to her collection late on Sunday.

McCann played in the mixed doubles with her dad Neil and they sealed their place in the final with a 6-2 6-3 win over brother and sister duo Connor and Christal Brosnahan.

They were due to play another father-daughter combination in Peter and Ashleigh Leonard in the final late on Sunday afternoon, after the Leonards beat Gareth Evans and Jade Brosnahan in the other semi-final.

Kristine Marriott picks her moment and charges to the finish line first in the Tinwald Cycling Club’s season-ending Mid Canterbury Championships on Saturday.

Kristine Marriott has finished off Tinwald Cycling Club’s season in style.

Not only did Marriott claim victory and lift the Mid Canterbury Championship title on Saturday, but she also recorded the fastest time, covering the 64km course around the Wakanui Beach block in 93.12 minutes.

Marriott and her co-markers worked hard from the start, finding the front of the race inside the final 7km.

With the front bunch swelling to 30 riders there were numerous chances leading into the final charge to the line, but Marriott showed her experience, picking the right moment to jump to claim

the victory in a grandstand finish.

Paul Sinclair showed strength with a gutsy ride and was rewarded with second place and the senior men’s fastest time honours.

Mark Summerfield made an eye-catching late charge from the middle of the pack to grab the final podium position and deservedly secured the fastest time ribbon for the veteran 1 men.

Leeston rider and regular starter Steve Caldwell put in a great day’s work to take fourth spot and veteran 3 time honours.

Caitlin Titheridge showed plenty of cheek, riding off the front of the peloton in the final 2km only to get caught in the shadow of the finish line.

Her sterling ride was rewarded with the under-19 championship title.

Rob Hooper found himself in the thick of the finish, claiming the veteran 2 men’s fastest time spoils, while Don Morrison continued to defy his years, with his finishing position in the front bunch seeing him lift the veteran 4 men’s time title.

Michelle Knight also continued to impress, putting herself in the thick of the finish to secure the senior female fastest time honours.

Liz Wylie and Rachel Reid’s growth in the sport this season has been noteworthy, and both were rewarded for their efforts by

recording veteran 4 and 1 women’s fastest times respectively.

The juniors also raced for Mid Canterbury titles over 16km, and like the senior race the result came down to a sprint finish.

It was Jack Templeton who had the final say, producing a powerful sprint to lift the under-17 Championship title for 2019.

Penny Marriott, who had made huge strides in her first season of racing, secured second place, while Zack Brookland was hard on their tail to claim the third place getter’s spoils.

Big brother Mitch Brookland was fourth and secured the under-15 boys’ fastest time ribbon, and Maddie Lowry backed up her

recent busy track cycling commitments to claim fifth place and the under-17 girl’s fastest time spoils.

Zoe Spillane continued her great season, taking sixth spot and the under-15 girls’ time title.

Scratch marker Ethan Titheridge, also recently returning from a successful campaign at the New Zealand Track Cycling Championships, recorded the fastest time of the day, riding the distance in 26.00 minutes.

His efforts earned him the under-17 fastest time title.

Sue Templeton had the final say in the division 2 race, seeing off challenges from Brian Ellis, Janette Hooper and Andy Skinner.
