Crucial negotiations between Mt Hutt Ski Area and the Department of Conservation are under way on renewal of the skifield’s long-term lease. The ski area is hoping the department does not hike its tenancy fees too high as it aims to keep a lid on its costs and ski pass prices.

Ski area manager James McKenzie said yesterday that the department was planning to publicly notify the ski area’s application for lease renewal of the ski area and easement on the access road soon. He understood it would be a 30-year lease, following the current 40-year lease running out. Mr McKenzie said that like any landlord, the department would want to in-

crease the rent, but like any tenant, Mt Hutt would be resistant to that. “We are in that phase now, we are just trying to find that happy medium,” Mr McKenzie said. It was costs such as this which the skifield had to meet which impacted on pass prices. However, linking potential increased lease fees with any future pass price in-

creases would be “scaremongering”, he said. The ski area has this year managed to freeze its season’s pass prices, but its adult day pass price will go to $95, up from $93 last year. Mr McKenzie said it was the first increase for “quite some time”, and reflected the rise in GST as well as rising power and fuel costs. PHOTO TONY HARRINGTON

Cyrus to record Beatles cover US pop star Miley Cyrus is collaborating with Wayne Coyne on a cover of the Beatles classic Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Kardashian stoush Khloe Kardashian has blasted Australian TV programme Sunrise on Twitter over an interview she did with the show in Los Angeles. The younger sister of Kim Kardashian denied she ended an interview with Channel Seven’s US-based producers because they asked about Kanye West and Kim’s baby, North West. “Why would I cut an interview short because of North? Get over your self Sunrise ... The call dropped ... stop reaching for a story,” the 29-year-old tweeted yesterday. More jail time for Brown Chris Brown will spend another month in jail after a judge said yesterday he was told the singer made troubling comments in rehab about being good at using guns and knives. Brown, 24, was arrested after he was dismissed from a Malibu facility where he was receiving treatment for anger management, substance abuse and issues related to bipolar disorder. Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin said rehab officials reported to him that Brown said during a group session: “I am good at using guns and knives.” The facility cited three other violations of its rules, claiming Brown refused to take a drug test, made a statement that alarmed rehab officials, and was seen touching the elbow of a female client. His attorney Mark Geragos said the comment Brown made that prompted concern was, “I’m going to ask my higher power to take away my troubles.”

Tourism group retains funding By Sue NewmaN

Experience Mid Canterbury chief executive Nigel Birt says he’ll fight tooth and nail to ensure the Ashburton District receives its share of New Zealand’s tourist dollars. But to do that, Mr Birt said, his organisation needs strong buy-in from its main funders – the Ashburton District Council and the district’s tourism operators. After a tough battle, he’s secured council funding for the coming year but in spite of

requesting an increase, he’s been granted the status quo – $386,000. When the council debated Experience Mid Canterbury’s funding, four councillors wanted this cut rather than increased and two wanted the district’s two i-Sites closed. Last year Experience Mid Canterbury was restructured to become a council-controlled organisation with a council appointed board and a council liaison committee and that has set the organisation up for a strong and positive future, Mr Birt said.

“We now have a much better environment to operate in so it was pretty frustrating to get this debate over whether we should be funded and the i-Sites should be closed.” The role of i-Sites was constantly evolving but it would be short-sighted to close the centres in Methven and Ashburton. They were performing far above the national average, he said. Against other provincial and small town centres, both outstrip their peers. In terms of funding, Ashburton received

$64,000 from the council annually against the national average of $223,000 and Methven, $80,000 against the national average of $137,000. Ashburton’s site absorbs $1.01 (national average $4.95) per visitor from council funds and Methven $1.04 (national average $5.69). “The government invests $500,000 nationally in the i-Site network because it believes it delivers and that’s a clear signal to local government to invest via the i-Site structure that’s in place.” There are more than 80 i-

Sites around New Zealand and each year those sites deal with 8.9 million visitor inquiries. While tourism operators promoted their own businesses, Experience Mid Canterbury was the glue that tied those operators together and it was the central body that drove marketing campaigns and promoted the district as a whole, Mr Birt said. That marketing effort was a big contributor in securing the $120 million that came into the district each year purely from tourists’ credit card spending, he said.

Ashburton’s new pool and sports complex, the EA Networks Centre, is starting to take shape and is on target for completion by the middle of next year. Many of the precast concrete wall panels are now in place and the construction schedule is running to plan. Ashburton’s new sports complex might be at least a year away from opening but work is already under way on the way in which it will be staffed. Meetings have been held with stakeholders to look at staff structure, roles and responsibilities and the facilities manager position will be advertised before the end of this month. This position is anticipated to be filled by the middle of this year.

A strip of tin fence along Dobson Street west has been an accident site waiting for an accident, says businessman Ross Butterick. The fence appears to be built on the edge of the road, forcing pedestrians to dice with traffic when using the area and motorists to take a wide swing towards the centre line. Mr Butterick says the Riverside Association has complained to the Ashburton District Council about the fence, concerned over its potential to cause an accident, but nothing had changed. On Monday night their worst fears were realised when a car ploughed through the fence. “I don’t know how anyone could build a fence on the road. I believe it’s council land. You see people walking through here and they have to walk out on the road with the trucks,” he said. The kerb stops just short of, and two metres further back from the road at either end. Its siting defies logic, Mr Butterick said.

Ashburton College pupils were dealt a reality check yesterday when a former high ranking detective laid bare pictures from their social media profiles for all to see. The point former Australian child exploitation detective Brett Lee wanted to hammer home was personal information posted online was accessible to billions of people – no matter how private they thought it was. Mr Lee is delivering his frank presentations to highlight the dangers of social media, speaking from his experience of spending thousands of hours using fictitious identities of young people on the internet to bring down paedophiles. The Year 13 group in the college’s auditorium became visibly anxious when Mr Lee began flashing photos of their friends on the large projector screen. “I had a Year 9 girl come up to me recently when I did this, and she said she wasn’t nervous at all because she was happy

with what she allowed to be online, that’s how you guys should feel,” Mr Lee said. The pupils were told to quash any preconceived idea there was a difference between what was said in person and what was posted in cyberspace. He pointed to a case where he arrested a man for making an indecent comment to him while posing as a young girl on the internet. Police found out later he had spoken to and met with several boys and girls aged between 12 and 17. “He had total control, he knew it was wrong, we didn’t make him type those words, and from the moment he sent it he was going to be arrested.” Head boy Adam Tupper said it made him realise how little control there was once something was posted in cyberspace, regarding who could see it and what could be done with it. “I wasn’t too worried about the photos, but then again you never really keep track of what’s gone out there,” he said.

Numbers about double It was a record Methven A&P Show (aerial view pictured) with about 4000 people attending last Saturday, about double the number of previous years. President Andrew Oram said it was better than he and fellow committee members could ever have expected for the 100th jubilee event. The wine and food tent was so popular it sold out of food, and they had been “very, very lucky” with the weather, as rain and wind associated with the forecast Cyclone Lusi held off until the evening. “The weather turned out absolutely perfect,” Mr Oram said. Looking to the future, the committee planned to continue with some of the successful attractions of the 100th show, such as an extended animal tent and a large vintage machinery component. “For the next 100 years we just need to keep focusing on what people are interested in and just building on that,” Mr Oram said. Methven residents will learn how to be prepared for their children’s teenage years at a presentation at Mount Hutt College tonight. An Attitude speaker from Christchurch will present Understanding Your Teen in the school hall, beginning 7.30pm. Mount Hutt College Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has organised the free event which is open to the public. Committee member Lynda Anderson said the speaker would offer a “road map through the adolescent years” for parents, grandparents and other family members of teenagers. Issues around bullying, alcohol and technology would be addressed, and attendees would be able to ask questions. It would help family members come to

terms with what they may face as their children got older, before it hit them out of the blue. “You kind of learn by mistake rather than be educated before it happens, or you learn from other people’s communication,” Mrs Anderson said. She said the Attitude speakers were high quality and motivational. They talked to Year 9 pupils each year, and the PTA had decided to offer a presentation for adults for the first time this year. According to its website, Attitude offers “inspirational programmes” aimed at total wellbeing and preventing youth suicide, teen pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted infections. It is the youth education division of The Parenting Place, which began as Parenting with Confidence in 1993, founded by parenting gurus Ian and Mary Grant.

Christchurch man still missing There is still no sign of a Christchurch man who was last seen near the Blaketown tiphead on March 9. Kurt Green, 30, travelled to Greymouth with friends on Saturday, March 8 - the day of the Hokitika Wildfoods Festival - staying with their friends in Blaketown. He was last seen the next day heading toward the tiphead and beach. Those involved in a beach clean-up last week found a wallet and shoes and socks near the entrance to the beach at the end

of Rigg Street. They were handed to the police and later confirmed as belonging to Mr Green. A search and rescue team and volunteers yesterday began a search. Search and rescue co-ordinator senior constable Mike Tinnelly said the area of beach from Westroads to the tiphead would be searched. He suggested that Mr Green may have gone for a swim and got into difficulty. - APNZ

Serious assault A man has been arrested over a serious assault in Christchurch at the weekend. A 19-year old man was assaulted in Riccarton at the weekend. Yesterday he was reported to be in a comfortable condition in Christchurch Hospital and was no longer in intensive care, police said. Lucky escape Three people, including a pregnant woman, were able to climb out of their crashed car before it burst into flames in southern Hawke’s Bay yesterday. The car left the road southeast of Waipukurau and caught on fire but the occupants escaped the blaze, a statement from the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter said. Barker loses appeal Former Rotorua teen Tristan Barker has lost his appeal against his conviction and discharge for assaulting an Australian television journalist. Cameron Courts resident Gwen Banks was one of hundreds around the country to get their annual influenza vaccinations this week. The 86-year-old was not often sick but the flu jab gave her an extra boost to fight off the full effects if she caught influenza over the coming months. As well as targeting people over 65 years old, a special focus of this year’s annual programme was toward pregnant women and their newborn babies. Healthy, pregnant women are up to 18 times more likely to be admitted to hospital when they suffered from influenza than non-pregnant women. The influenza immunisation is free for New Zealanders with a high risk of complications. These included pregnant women, people aged 65 and over, and those

Entertainer granted permanent suppression By Jimmy Ellingham A prominent New Zealand entertainer who assaulted his ex-partner has been granted permanent name suppression and a discharge without conviction. The man appeared for sentence in the Auckland District Court today on one charge of assault, which he promptly admitted last year. During an argument with his ex-girlfriend the man kicked her in the thigh and struck her arm, leaving her with minor bruising. Judge Philip Recordon said he wasn’t convinced that naming the man would result in extreme hardship for him, but other grounds of his lawyer Jenny Verry’s application were stronger. “In my view publication of your name and details would cause undue hardship to the victim of the offence,” the judge said. Ms Verry also said publicity would negatively effect others associated with the entertainer. APNZ and police opposed suppression, citing the interests of open justice. Judge Recordon agreed with Ms Verry that the consequences of a con-

viction would outweigh the seriousness of the offence and granted the man a discharge. “[Since] you’ve been before the court, there’s no reference to any subsequent offending or callout, and you’ve led a life which is one of contribution to society and you have accepted responsibility and accountability and haven’t tried to make excuses,” the judge told the man. “No family violence is ever acceptable ... If there had to be a category this would be in the lower end.” The judge said it would make a “nonsense” of the discharge if suppression wasn’t also granted. The court heard the man and his exgirlfriend were still friends. The ex-girlfriend supported the man’s discharge and suppression applications. “I do think, from the start, that the case is a private matter,” the ex said. Since the incident the man had successfully participated in an anti-violence programme and paid a donation to charity. Outside court the man hugged Ms Verry, but didn’t want to talk to APNZ. “All good brother. Next time,” he said. - APNZ

Pora decision reserved By Jimmy Ellingham A High Court judge has reserved his decision on whether twice-convicted murderer and rapist Teina Pora will be granted bail. Pora, 38, has spent 21 years behind bars for the 1992 rape and murder Susan Burdett in Auckland. He was present in the High Court at Auckland yesterday as his lawyer Jonathan Krebs argued for his release ahead of his Privy Council appeal. After hearing from Mr Krebs and Crown lawyer Matthew Downs, Justice Lang reserved his decision. Legislation means all discussion yesterday is suppressed. Last week the Court of Appeal ruled it didn’t have jurisdiction and referred the matter back to the High Court. Mr Krebs has said pursuing bail for Pora, who also has a parole hearing set for the end of the month, was important as a successful result would enable him to be free of conditions set on his sentence. At his first trial in 1994, Pora was found guilty of the murder of Ms Burdett, who was beaten with a softball bat in the bedroom of her south Auckland home in 1992. Pora had confessed to police but a retrial was ordered as doubts began to emerge about his involvement. - APNZ

Novelist, former mayor honoured Novelist Eleanor Catton is thrilled to be honoured for her services to literature - but doubts she’ll wear her new medal to many parties. Catton was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit at an investiture ceremony at Government House in Wellington yesterday. Last year, the 28-year-old became the youngest-ever author to win the Man Booker Prize for her second novel, The Luminaries. She still felt her youth at yesterday’s ceremony - but she also felt thrilled and “like a proud New Zealander”. “It feels quite extraordinary, actually. I think it’s because it’s usually something that’s bestowed on somebody at a later stage in their life, so I feel like it doesn’t quite suit me yet - I’m going to have to sit on it for about 10 years.”

Catton said day’s ceremony was far more enjoyable than the “nerve-racking” Booker Prize ceremony, when she didn’t know if she was going to win. The theme of service had really hit home, she said. “I hadn’t really thought about that before - that writing a book is a kind of a service that you’re doing for your country.” Catton and her family were “very excited” when they found out the investiture honour came with a medal - but don’t expect to see her wearing it in public anytime soon. “It comes in a little box so maybe we can put it on the wall somewhere. I don’t know if I go to very many parties where it’s appropriate to wear a medal.” Among those who congratulated Catton after the ceremony was former Christchurch mayor Sir Bob Parker, who was knighted yesterday by Governor-General Lieutenant General Sir Jerry Mateparae.

Borough’s rebuild about to begin By Myles HuMe

The demolition of Ashburton Borough’s leaky administration building is imminent as the school awaits its $1.2 million rebuild. The office block has been fenced off by contractors with principal Sam Winterbourn and administration staff relocated into a port-a-com on the school site. It has been a long time coming for the school, which has been frustrated by delays as the building continued to leak when miserable weather lashed the district. Mr Winterbourn said he was relieved work was finally underway. John McIntosh – the owner of local firm McIntosh Builders which is carrying out the rebuild – said the demolition stage would be over in four weeks, with the plan to have the building complete by the end of September.

A billboard has been erected at the school’s main entrance, showing an artist’s impression by David Smith Architects, which has designed a modern building with mono-pitch roofing. The block, to be clad in western red cedar weatherboard and painted brick, will be about 308 square metres, Mr McIntosh said. Problems were noticed with the school’s current administration building a while ago when water began leaking through a skylight The school thought it was a glazing issue and had it repaired but that never fixed the entire problem. Mr Winterbourn said the magnitude of the problem became evident in 2012 when earthquake assessors were checking internal cracks in the block, soon realising they had emerged as a result of the water damage. It was found there were combined issues with design, materials, build and code regulations at the time it was built.

The sister of a murdered woman told the killer yesterday that she wished he could feel her pain. Gene Hepana, 40, was sentenced at the High Court at Auckland yesterday to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 17 years. He pleaded guilty in February to murdering Jasmine Cooper, 26, at her Northland home on December 23 last year. At his sentencing yesterday, Ms Cooper’s sister Crystal Cooper said words could not explain how much she missed her murdered sister. “I can’t get it out of my head.” Reading her victim impact statement, Crystal told Hepana she had now become a mother of five after taking in her sister’s son Xavier. “He’s now having bad dreams about you chasing his mum ... you did this to him and I’m having to pick up the pieces. “You left a little boy without his mother, he was the only person she truly loved. “I wish I could make you feel our pain. I hope you know what you have done and how you have affected our lives.” At the High Court yesterday Justice Graham Lang said he had no other option but to impose a sentence of life imprisonment, taking into account Hepana’s previous convictions and lack of remorse. The public gallery was filled with about 30 friends and family of Ms Cooper, who had travelled to Auckland from Te Hana

and Rotorua to witness the sentencing of her murderer. Ms Cooper had entered a relationship with Hepana last July, until it came to a violent end in November, Justice Lang said. He said Hepana attacked a vulnerable woman living alone in her house in the middle of the night while a trespass order was in place against him. Crown lawyer Natalie Walker told the court Hepana had five previous convictions for assaulting women and two for wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The grievous bodily harm convictions stemmed from an incident where Hepana attacked his half-brother with a tomahawk and stabbed another man in the abdomen with a knife. He was jailed for 10 years over the incident. Ms Cooper texted her sister before she was killed, saying someone was “creeping around” her house in Te Hana, just north of Wellsford. Ms Walker told the court that shortly after midnight, Hepana went into Ms Cooper’s home and strangled her before dragging her outside her house. When she came to, he strangled her again, rendering her unconscious, before beating her around the face and throat with a rock, killing her. Hepana’s lawyer Michael Levett said he had been instructed by his client not to argue for any form of sentence reduction. - APNZ

The Right Reverend Ray Coster will try to reignite the passion in the Presbyterian Church when he visits next month. His official title is The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. The Presbyterian Church leader said the church was in need of a revival and needed a spark to ignite the flame. He planned to use the theme of ‘reviving the flame’ when he visited Mid Canterbury in April. “I love the word revive. It speaks to me about God never giving up on God’s people. In some ways I feel as though our Presbyterian Church has been in a wilderness for many years. We are all now aware of our church’s downward statistics.” He said church attendance had dropped about 100,000 people, dropping from a denomination of 130,000 people in the 1960s to 30,000 today. “It could be very easy to become despondent about this, give up and feel like we are failing. But the desert or wilderness is a place of meeting and restoration. That’s where revival, refreshment and restoration begin,” he said. The Right Reverend was due to stay in the district for a week and had a full schedule planned. He will meet with parishioners, farming community leaders, social agencies and both charity and business organisations from within Mid Canterbury. The Right Reverend was appointed Moderator in 2012. A focus of his two-year term was to change the mind-set of the people. “I have met a number of people in our

he Ashburton District Council’s plan to introduce wheelie bins is long overdue. The current system with plastic bags and the tiny green crate is outdated and needs to follow the neighbouring councils success in driving their waste down. Christchurch has used a threebin system for five years and the results speak for themselves. The average waste going into the landfill for each person reduced from 764kg in 2005 to 524kg in 2012. A blanket change for all people in Mid Canterbury who are served by waste collection, should have little additional cost for most families that use one or two bags a week. However, it will no doubt upset those who have little waste and would see their rates increase for no obvious personal benefits. Sadly this group may have to bite the bullet for the greater good of reducing our waste. The council staff prefer to keep the green crate for glass and introduce two other bins, one for non-glass, recyclable goods, and one for waste. They feel this option would guarantee noncontamination of the recyclable goods and therefore produce quality recycling. The crate, however, may not be necessary if the goods continue to be picked out by hand. More importantly, that proposal would lack a bin for organic waste, which would be a missed opportunity. People in Christchurch will tell you that removing food scraps and other green waste from the rubbish significantly reduces the true waste going in to the landfill. Under the preferred proposal the organic material will end up inside plastic bags inside the rubbish bin which will make it much harder to break down in the landfill. Many people do their own composting and may not need a green bin, so the Selwyn District solution for an optional organic waste bin, at an additional charge, could be the pragmatic halfway option. Either way, the business community will love the bins because the current crates only accommodate a smidgeon of their paper waste. With the current contract running out, it is time to make a major change, so let’s make sure it’s the right one.

Regarding your editorial of May 17 concerning the Ashburton Business Association. The reason no-one from Grow Mid Canterbury attended the meeting is simply that of the three suitable representatives, one is no longer available (the agency is currently short staffed), one had a prior engagement and one was delayed by an urgent matter at their business on the evening of the meeting. However, Grow Mid Canterbury had been in touch with the ABA committee some time before the meeting and offered its support and assistance with the issues they are facing. shburton District Council reviews its revenue and financing policy periodically to determine who should pay for the services it undertakes and on what basis. One of the mechanisms councils can use to raise money for their services is fees and charges. Where our activities provide an obvious benefit for individuals we often use a fee or a user charge, paid by those who use the specific service, to fund all or at least a good part of that service. An example is the fee you would pay to have the council process your building consent application, or the charge you would pay to park your car on a metered parking space. For the work we do in the building area, the council has determined that 90 per cent of the cost should be recovered by fees and that the remaining 10 per cent of the work has a public good component that should be funded by general rates. Along with our draft annual plan, every year in April, we consult on a proposed schedule of the fees and charges we intend to use in the next financial year. Fees and charges currently make up about 6.5 per cent of council’s annual revenue. One of the things we consider before settling on amounts for fees and charges are relativities with neighbouring councils. Last month I saw the Christchurch City Council was looking at doubling the minimum cost of getting a building consent for a new home. The full building consent cost for a single-storey 200sqm house built to a national home builder’s standard design with a project value of $350,000 was set to increase to $3850. While it was good to see our consent cost would still be $300 cheaper than Christchurch’s, I really couldn’t imagine how, if they were doubling their costs, they would only come to $3850, or how our costs would be higher than most of those other councils mentioned. When you benchmark costs, which is something smart organisations are interested in doing, you need to compare apples with apples. Ashburton District Council’s building consent fee structure for projects between $100,000 and $499,000 is broken-down from the comparison as follows: Project information memorandum fee ........... $271.60 Administration ................. $310.80 Code of Compliance Certificate fee .................. $259.00 District Plan Compliance Fee............... $120.00 Inspection Fee ................. $1620.00 .....................................(10 inspections)

These are our current year’s fees with no changes proposed for next year. What was misrepresented in The Press article was that the proposed Christchurch City Council consent cost of $3850 does not include their Project Information Memorandum fee, their Code of Compliance Certificate fee, their District Plan Compliance fee, or the Building Control Authority Accreditation levy, all of which are in our $3530.40 figure. Comparing ‘apples for apples’ our cost would be $2380.80 next to Christchurch’s $3850. We are considerably less expensive than Christchurch for the same level of skill and expertise in processing a standard single level house consent application from a national home builder. Further, our building officials go out and make 10 inspections; Christchurch’s only do eight (we make more inspections to lower the risk of something

going wrong and having claims brought against the council). I understand Christchurch’s current actual building consent cost is about $3700 if you include all the items in the table. Selwyn District Council is around $4400, and Waimakariri District Council is $3900. Even then, we are not comparing apples with apples. The cost of Selwyn’s building work is 24 per cent rate funded compared to ours at 10 per cent. While we do normally try to set fees and charges at an appropriate level to recover costs and ensure the general ratepayer is not picking up costs that they shouldn’t, sometimes we are constrained by circumstances beyond our control. One of the things councils have to do is inspect and permit amusement devices that you see at sideshows – rollercoasters, chair-o-planes, ferris wheels and the like. The maximum fee we can charge for doing the work is prescribed by legislation at $11.50. If the operator has additional devices it’s another $2.30 each. Not that helpful for recovering costs! Deep water search difficult The search for a missing Malaysia Airlines aircraft in the southern Indian Ocean has been compared to looking for a needle in a haystack by Australian authorities. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) says it will take weeks to comb the area and the search will only get harder as time passes. AMSA is co-ordinating a search of water spanning more than 600,000 square kilometres, some 3200km southwest of Perth, an area almost three times the size of Victoria. It is one of two areas at the centre of international search operations, which has brought together agencies from 26 countries. “A needle in a haystack remains a good analogy,” John Young, the head of AMSA’s emergency response division, said. The search area has been determined by a range of factors, including the aircraft’s fuel range, speed and endurance; satellite positioning; weather conditions and water drift modelling. “But with the passage of significant time ... and with the constant movement of water, it will be difficult,” Mr Young said.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday approved a draft bill for the annexation of Crimea, one of a flurry of steps to formally take over the Black Sea peninsula. Crimea on Sunday voted overwhelmingly to secede from Ukraine and seek to join Russia. The West and Ukraine described the referendum which was announced two weeks ago as illegitimate. The United States and the European Union on Monday announced asset freezes and other sanctions against Russian and Ukrainian officials involved in the Crimean crisis. - AP

Shark bites girl A 10-year-old girl was attacked by a shark off Australia’s east coast and suffered a serious injury to her hand, officials said yesterday. Paramedics were called to a beach south of Brisbane after receiving a report the girl had been bitten on the wrist, a spokeswoman for the New South Wales state ambulance service said. Measles? Blow here Japan’s Toshiba has unveiled a breathalyser which it says can detect a wide range of diseases just 30 seconds after users blow into the machine. The device, about the size of a small dishwasher, has a nozzle in which users blow several times. Abuse ‘Lord’s work’ One of Australia’s worst paedophile priests groomed a four-year-old victim by calling her “God’s little angel” and described his abuse as “the Lord’s work”. Former Catholic priest Gerald Francis Ridsdale, 79, has admitted his guilt in assaulting 45 children in abuse that spanned 26 years. Among his victims were the fouryear-old girl, siblings he took on holiday and an altar boy. Ridsdale hid behind the Catholic Church as he abused, said a victim who was in church care and indecently assaulted during drives. - AP

Economic tipping point A sharp improvement in New Zealand’s traditionally feeble economic productivity statistics suggests the economy is at a “tipping point” for a period of stronger economic growth, says the ANZ Bank’s chief economist, Cameron Bagrie.

Figures just released by Statistics New Zealand show productivity growth in the year to March 2013 of 2.1 per cent, well above the average annual rate of 1.6 per cent recorded during the 17-year period since recording began. - APNZ

Paterson’s Funeral Services new manager Barry Hayman says taking up the position has been like “coming home”. Mr Hayman formerly worked for the Ashburton firm as a funeral director for four years up to 1990, after beginning his career in Waimate in 1985. After Ashburton he moved on to Timaru where he was a funeral director for 13 years, before being appointed as assistant manager then manager of a funeral company in Blenheim. “It’s very nice to come back

here, it almost feels like coming home really,” Mr Hayman, who has family in Canterbury, said. After the many hundreds of funerals he had been involved in, he said it remained a privilege to be taken into people’s lives at such a significant time. “It’s a privilege to look after people. And I don’t think it gets any easier as time goes on, because every situation is different. Everybody’s needs are different and one funeral is never the same as the next,” Mr Hayman said. No-one could be happier than Roger Paterson about the new appointment. He said he and

wife Pauline had decided it was time to retire when they were “lucky enough” to sell to the “well established and highly professional” Lamb and Hayward in Christchurch. “At my suggestion we encouraged Barry to come back to us as manager,” Mr Paterson said. “I’m really thrilled that Barry has come back to Ashburton and brought all those years of experience with him.” Mr Paterson will remain involved with the firm and help at funerals. He has been a funeral director for 49 years, and established Paterson’s 32 years ago. The firm is to keep its name.

Take the confusion out Food – keep it real The 20/20 diet cookbook by Lola Berry is designed around eating real food, food that is as close to its natural state as possible. That means unprocessed and in season. The 20/20 diet, apparently is not only about eating healthily it is also about losing weight. Starting out on this diet path will require a pantry spring clean to remove temptations and basically anything that comes in a tin or a packet with a list of ingredients that reads like a chemistry lesson on its label. It also means leaving out of your diet most of the carbohydrates we take as the norm.

Life must have been a lot simpler in the days when food was food, when you ate what landed on your plate and you were blissfully unaware of good food and bad food. Today, eating is not just about consuming enough of the food you like to satisfy your appetite. Food is now defined by the good and bad elements it contains – too much fat, too much sugar, too much salt. Breach the benchmark on any of those and you start feeling guilty. And that’s before you start processing food and adding chemicals into the mix. Throw in the countless food allergies that now seem to be rife and getting it right is becoming a big call. Accompanying the healthy food revolution has been a flood of cookbooks designed to help home cooks wade through the minefield of what to eat without loading the family up with the endless list of ‘unhealthy’ ingredients. Some of those are all about commonsense, but many take healthy eating to the extreme, cutting out food groups completely. One of the best healthy eating guides around is the monthly magazine New Zealand Healthy Food. All of its recipes are measured against an ingredient list and they either pass or they fail.

Lamb cutlets with cauliflower rice and chilli sauce OR 16 canned apricot halves drained 2T brown sugar 100g reduced fat fresh ricotta cheese 1/2C low fat vanilla yoghurt 1 t lemon zest ■ Place fruit in shallow ovenproof dish cut side up ■ Sprinkle with sugar ■ Heat under grill for 5-6 mins until warmed and sugar has caramelised ■ Combine ricotta, yoghurt and lemon zest until smooth. ■ Serve with grilled fruit.

Spiced carrot, capsicum and corn fritters

1 t paprika 2 eggs 1/4C trim milk 1/2C self raising flour 1C corn kernels 300g carrots grated 1 small red pepper diced 2 T chopped fresh coriander ■ Heat oil in frying pan ■ Add onion and cook until softened ■ Add garlic and spices. Cook stirring 1 min ■ Set aside to cool ■ Whisk eggs, milk and flour in bowl ■ Stir in corn, carrots, red pepper, coriander and onion mixture ■ Season with black pepper ■ Place large non-stick pan on heat ■ Spray with oil ■ Spoon ¼ C mixture per fritter into pan ■ Cook fritters for 3 mins each side or until golden.

400g cauliflower florets 500ml chicken or vegetable stock 2 T olive oil Juice ½ lemon Salt and pepper 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes 4 cloves garlic finely diced 1 onion finely diced 2 red chillies finely diced 2 T coconut oil 6 lamb cutlets. ■ Process cauliflower in food processor until it resembles rice ■ Place in pan with stock and bring to the boil ■ Reduce heat and simmer uncovered 20 mins ■ Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly ■ Stir through olive oil, lemon juice and seasonings. ■ Combine tomatoes, garlic onion, chilies, seasonings in pan

■ Bring to boil and simmer 7 mins ■ Cook lamb cutlets in coconut oil and serve with sauce and ‘rice’.

Best roast pumpkin 1.5kg pumpkin cut into 2cm pieces 1/2 C coconut oil melted 2T maple syrup 1/2 t ground cinnamon 1/2 t ground nutmeg 1/2 C pumpkin seeds 1/2 C dried cranberries to serve ■ Preheat oven to 180°C ■ Place pumpkin on lge baking tray ■ In small bowl whisk coconut oil, maple syrup, spices and salt ■ Drizzle over pumpkin ■ Bake 30 mins until flesh is soft but not mushy ■ Remove from oven and sprinkle with pumpkin seeds ■ Roast 3 mins ■ Serve sprinkled with dried cranberries.

Cover with cling film and marinate for at least 1 hour in the fridge.

Hinds’ Rebecca Reith said she was “very surprised” to win the annual Zonta Youth Art Awards last week. “I went to the exhibition last year and I knew it was a real high calibre work, especially when my work is very much picture like, it can get lost easily,” the 18-year-old said from Palmerston North where she is studying. Her parents phoned her to tell her of the win after they accepted the award on her behalf at the presentation on Friday night at the Ashburton Art Gallery. “When mum and dad rang me I was very surprised,” she said. Her winning print, Spring Spikers, was taken from a Level 3 NCEA print work she submitted while a student at Rangi Ruru last year. The former Longbeach Primary School pupil grew up on her family’s Hinds deer farm, and used the animals as inspiration for the work. She described herself as a “hyper-realist artist” with her work “quite technical, but I like to see a lot of detail”. “My two art teachers at Rangi Ruru are definitely the ones who inspire the way I draw and paint,” Miss Reith said. Those teachers were Libby Sheehy and Kate Rivers. Miss Reith is a keen horse rider and has her own artwork Facebook page, and undertakes commissions for people, mainly pictures of horses. She is studying pre-veterinary science at Massey and hopes to become a veterinarian, while also continuing to pursue her passion for art. The $750 Zonta prize will go towards her study and art materials. Meanwhile, over 90 people attended the awards, held at the Ashburton Art Gallery.

work and praised the budding artists’ efforts. The Zonta awards are for 16 to 19-year-olds residing in Mid and South Canterbury.

Kiwi author produces good stuff Night Vision Written by Ella West Published by Allen Unwin An admission to start with: I don’t think most New Zealand authors are that flash; mostly you read them and say ‘Yeah, not bad, for one of ours’. I haven’t see Ella West’s previous work - but I might have to go looking. This is good stuff, really good. It’s the story of Viola, a 14-year-old only child who lives with her parents on a small sheep farm (and here’s the kicker) just an hour out of Ashburton. She suffers from Xeroderma Pigmen-

tosum, which presents her with a life of serious problems involving keeping forever out of sunlight, which is why she was out in the forestry plantation late at night, and watching as one man burned the evidence of robbery and murder in an intense car fire. Fictional nonsense, couldn’t happen round here, right? Think about it. There are so many strands to the story, which we see through Viola’s eyes, it’s quite remarkable that the story and all the detail, is crammed into less than 200 pages, surely within the attention span of younger readers more used to peering at a screen.

The author lives on a sheep farm herself, in Otago, so the farming bits are accurate and she’s done her homework on Ashburton too, except that she thinks we’re in South Canterbury, one of the very few jarring notes in the whole production. Even the Ashburton Guardian figures strongly in the story (I wonder who the reporter and photographer were?). If this book lands on your children’s reading list, have a look at it; you just might find yourself devouring it in one sitting yourself. reviewed by Steve Devereux

Age and experience carried the day for Alex Hastie and eight-year-old Anton Oliver at Ashburton yesterday when the I Am A Fool–Money Back gelding made a late run to mow down the field and win a

workout race for CO and faster horses. After sitting at the back for most of the distance, Hastie made his move at the 800 metres, but was content to sit for most of the remaining distance. Buzkil, a three-year-old Bet-

tors Delight filly, had led from the barrier but when they turned for home she was forced to step up the pace as Anton Oliver stormed down the outside. In spite of a valiant effort by the youngster and trainer

driver James Geddes, she was forced into second place by a neck. Jimmy Hoffa and Jamie Gameson came home in third. Anton Oliver ran the 2400m in 3.04, 800m in 57.8, 400m, 27.4.

Experienced horseman Richard Otto has welcomed back to his stable a horse he rates as a topclass performer in waiting. The Te Awamutu trainer has held Sir Andrew in high regard for some time and his judgement proved on the mark last year when the son of Sir Percy made a grand start to his career. A winner on debut in August, he then ran third in an age group event on the opening day of the Hastings carnival before he returned south to beat All Decked Out in the Gr.2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas. Otto then had plans for a twostart campaign in Melbourne, but the trip had to be scrapped on the eve of departure. “We had to pull the pin at the last minute after he had a bruised heel,” Otto said. “We had him x-rayed and it showed a chip that had to be taken out of his knee in the opposite leg. “He did all the rehab work and then had two or three months in the paddock.” While disappointing at the time, Otto can now see the benefit that Sir Andrew derived from an extended break.

In brief Frank Oliver dies Former All Black Frank Oliver has died at the age of 65. He passed away in his sleep on Sunday, Newstalk ZB reported. The former lock played 17 tests for the All Blacks, making his debut against South Africa in 1976. During his career he played 43 matches for his country before his final test at aged 32 during the ill-fated Springboks tour of 1981. Oliver, the father of former All Black captain Anton Oliver, turned his hand to coaching and was the Hurricanes’ inaugural coach from 1996 to 1999 before taking the reins at the Blues during the 2001 season. - APNZ

Boost for coffers Football Federation Australia coffers are about to get a $10 million boost through the sale of Western Sydney Wanderers, and all A-League clubs will get a share, FFA supremo Frank Lowy says. The long-awaited deal means ownership of the club will pass to a consortium chaired by Primo Smallgoods businessman Paul Lederer. From shearing to umpiring and everything in between – Rakaia’s sporting success will be on show tomorrow night at the town’s inaugural sports awards. A total of 38 nominations have been put forward for their achievements over the 2012 and 2013 calendar years, as Rakaia looks to celebrate and reward its most outstanding junior and senior sportspeople, teams, ref-

erees and volunteers. The event, which has been organised by Sport Rakaia Incorporated (SRI), has even secured the services of a top guest speaker – Mid Canterbury born-and-bred Olympic rowing champion Hamish Bond. The outstanding senior award category includes current junior New Zealand smallbore rifle shooting junior champion Hailey Beevor, along with Mid Canterbury bowls champion of champions winner Rosemary Bennett and national shearing

championships circuit winner Tony Coster. They will be joined by nine other nominees in a range of sports including rugby, rodeo, hockey and harness racing. Warriors make changes Manu Vatuvei, Konrad Hurrell and Sione Lousi have all been added to the Warriors side to play the Cowboys in Townsville on Saturday night. CHANGES TO THE FIRE SEASON STATUS An Open Fire Season has been declared for the Ashburton Plains from midnight Wednesday 5 March 2014. The Prohibited Fire Season declared for the Hill and High Country areas of Ashburton District remains in place until further notice. Restrictions may be reimposed at a later date and it is the responsibility of all persons lighting fires to determine the current fire season status before lighting any such fires. Under Environment Canterbury’s Natural Resources Regional Plan rules, no outdoor burning is allowed at any time within all urban areas of the District without a resource consent from ECan. The odds were stacked against Ashburton superbike star Bailie Perriton this week, but the teen did not let that stand in the way as he sits third overall in his first international race series. With a bike five horsepower down than the leading rider’s on a track he had never experienced, not to mention it being his first trip abroad, Perriton showed guts and determination to rack up an impressive tally

of third place finishes in round one of the ASC/FX and FX 300 Cup. He had just two sessions to learn the new bike and the Wakefield Park track in New South Wales but was able to fight off quality riders many years his superior, to be sitting third in both competitions overall. Team manager Merv Orford said it was obvious the 16-yearold’s bike did not compare to his opponents. “The bike was around five horsepower less than the lead-

ing bike and due to a rear shock absorber not arriving from the UK in time, Bailie was having trouble getting drive out of the slower corners as the bumps were unsettling the rear of the machine,” Orford said. “That performance was outstanding. Even on the screen you could see the problems he was experiencing, he pulled off some extraordinary moves to stay ahead of much faster bikes.” Perriton’s mentor Sloan Frost, who is behind getting him to Australia to compete, was also

riding in the superbike class. Despite lapping within a second of the leaders, he could only manage a best finish of 13th for the weekend. “Although my weekend didn’t bring the results I was expecting, it was made a whole lot better seeing Bailie do so well. He really surprised me with his maturity and has already won the respect of many in Australia with his show of sheer determination on a bike,” Frost said. Perriton has a busy schedule before the next round of the se-

ries at South Australia’s Mallala circuit in May. No more than 24 hours after arriving home, he heads to Taupo Motorsport Park for round three of the NZSBK championship this weekend, and then to Manfeild Park a few days later for the final round. He could wrap up the NZ 250 production title at Taupo, but will be looking to put on a show at Manfeild where a large contingent of local sponsors and supporters are expected to cheer him on.
