Builders set for impact

When work slows down for architects and draughtsmen, it’s just a matter of time before the impact is felt in the construction industry.

But right now they’re busy, catching up on the backlog that built up during the Covid-19 lockdown and forging ahead with work that was already planned. But looking six months

down the track the true picture of the pandemic’s impact on the industry will be felt, says McIntosh Group managing director commercial, John McIntosh.

“There’s still enough work on, you just have to be smart about it because the margins will be tighter,” he said.

The commercial arm of his company is still working on projects around the South Island, but had experienced the cancel-

lation of a large-scale project in Queenstown, McIntosh said.

Ross Leadley and his team are flat-tack at the moment and there is still work lined up, but six months out, he suggests there might be a bit of a pinch. He’s still working his way through jobs that were booked pre-lockdown.

The work’s still there, but it’s the scale of that work that’s changed over the past few

months, says Blueprint Architectural Services owner John Gibbs.

Rather than inquiry weighted towards new home design, Gibbs said there was more alteration and addition jobs coming across the design desk. The level of inquiry overall, however, had not dropped significantly – yet, he said.

“Yes, there is concern out there as to how things will look going

forward, but to be fair it’s been like this for a few months, it’s been a general trend that there have been fewer new homes and consent numbers are down.

We haven’t seen things grind to a halt and there’s still work out there, but it’s smaller scale work.”

SI ‘should become its own country’

Do you think the South Island would be better off breaking away from New Zealand and becoming its own country?

If so, you will find good company in the South Island Independence Movement, which was in Ashburton this week on the East Street chessboard.

On Tuesday, movement founder Solomon Tor-Kilsen set up with a billboard, handing out leaflets and chatting to people who stopped by.

He said he had been happy with the response for the afternoon, which was part of a South Island tour.

He said the idea of the South Island being its own country was not new, in fact the Mainland had once had its own government for about seven years following the colonisation of New Zealand.

“Then Wellington wrote some letters”, he said, leading to New Zealand becoming the one country with the one government.

Historically the South Island was the power house of the country, with resources such as electricity, fisheries, primary industries, timber, minerals and wine.

“We produce all this value and

The movement was dissatis-

fied with Parliament and all of the political parties, and wanted to have a South Island-wide con-

versation on how things could improve if the Mainland was its own country.

Another option was the North and South islands having their own jurisdictions and answering to a federal government, similar to what happens with states in Australia.

Tor-Kilsen began the movement when he set up a Facebook page in 2014, which today has almost 19,000 likes, and there are new people signing up to the movement every week.

The movement had grown to such a point it was time to take it around the South Island, and the current road trip was for six to eight weeks.

He hoped to do another trip this winter, which would take in smaller towns such as Methven and Rakaia.

He also planned to return to Ashburton in the summer and hold a sausage sizzle on the East Street chessboard.

“We will just complain about Auckland and Wellington, it will be great, it’s about pulling people together and getting that social unity happening,” he said.

Tor-Kilsen was heartened by a spirit of independence around the world, such as in countries like Scotland and Catalonia, and believed the South Island could become independent within his lifetime.

council installing water meters on every house in the district connected to a council water supply.

“The future should be water meters on every connection because we take water for granted.

We have to start saving our water,” Braam said.

Water meters on all properties was a must for the district eventually, Rodger Letham said, because unfettered use of water from domestic supplies could not continue. Water meters made it easy to

manage use and it meant you paid for what you used, he said.

Currently properties in residential A, B, and C zones pay a flat water rate of $450 a year regardless of how much water they use. Some properties in residential D, larger blocks on the outskirts of Ashburton, Methven, Rakaia and rural towns, have meters and if they exceed their 1000 litre allocation per day, measured quarterly, they pay for the extra use.

installing meters on all residential D properties and yesterday councillors decided the amount used before charges apply should rise to 1200 litres per day.

Meters are read quarterly and residents billed if they exceed their allocated limit, but councillor Liz McMillan wanted the charging regime to move to an annual one to smooth out the unders and overs of use.

Across the district there are 167 Residential D properties connected to urban water supplies and the completion of meter installation on all of these will cost $120,000.

Gardeners, Mt Hutt rejoice

Mid Canterbury gardeners are rejoicing as heavy rain breaks a dry spell.

There was 24.2 millimetres of rain at the Ashburton Airport weather station yesterday to 1pm, following the MetService measuring just 176 millimetres at the site so far this year to 4pm on Wednesday. This compares to the long-term average to the same date of 318 millimetres.

Ashburton Horticultural Society president Trevor Gamblin said the rain would help power along recently-planted poppies, pansies and violas at his place, and many of the society’s members would now be able to sleep better with the new moisture in the ground.

“We have had so much fine weather that it has been uncanny,” Gamblin said.

Ashburton MSA Garden Club president Beryl Boag was just as ecstatic, saying the good dousing would help bulbs such as daffodils, miniature irises and lillies that she had recently planted.

“It gives everything a really great start for the spring season and it’s good for the lawn too,” Boag said.

Ashburton District Council service delivery group manager Neil McCann said Ashburton Domain staff have been running irrigation a bit later this year due to the dry conditions, but as of yesterday have shut it down for the time being.

Farmers are also welcoming the rain.

Ashburton gardener Beryl Boag is pleased with more than 20 millimetres of rain overnight yesterday.

“It’s been really dry up until now in winter time, fortunately this has not come in too cold or too wet,” Clark said.

The precipitation has fallen as snow on Mt Hutt, which could see even more skiers than last weekend when it was the ski area’s busiest ever opening weekend.

Manager James McKenzie said the depth of snowfall by 2pm was “45 centimetres and counting” with the snowstorm continuing.

Mt Hutt Ski Area team member Anton French finds there is lots of shovelling to do as the snow just keeps falling.

Mid Canterbury’s team of 35,000 did a superb job in playing by the rules during the Covid-19 lockdown, and that team had every right to be angry over lax rules that had allowed people arriving in New Zealand to cut short their time in isolation, says Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown.

“We all made sacrifices for the greater cause and the Ministry of Health did all the good work but now they’ve let the team down on several occasions,” he said.

The risk from allowing two people, who later tested positive for Covid-19, to leave isolation early on compassionate grounds had put the hard work and sacrifices of every New Zealander at risk, Brown said.

“We can’t do Level 4 again. It’s already cost the country hundreds of millions of dollars and it won’t just be our children who will be paying for this, it will be our grandchildren too. The government needs to step up and do its job properly.”

The Ashburton District was fortunate with its strong primary sector base and the overseas dollars it earned for New Zealand’s economy, he said.

“I believe we’ll be first to come out of this as long as people do what they should. Well done all of us, we’ve all learned new stuff and we’ve done very, very well. Well done Mid Canterbury.”

Builders braced for delayed Covid-19 impact From P1 The big positive for the Ashburton District was its rural base and that it was better positioned to ride out the building slow-down than many areas, Gibbs said.

“There is work there for builders but it depends on what the in-

dividual builders are set up for. It’s a hard one to gauge, but my initial expectation is that there will be a slow-down, but I don’t expect it to be huge.”

Many in the construction sector had been through slow patches before and understood how to

work through these, Gibbs said.

“You just tend to spend a little more time chasing round looking for your next job, rather than it just turning up.”

In some ways architects and draftsmen were victims of their ability to work from home during

the lockdown, Moore Architecture’s Jonathan Moore said.

“Now we’re getting close to catching up. I’ve got work now but down the track there may not be the inquiries coming in. Builders are busy at the moment but for us it is just starting to hit,” he said.

Looking back at the lockdown F

or firefighters responding to emergency situations, everything is done by the book, with instructions, regulations and checklists to be completed.

From car crashes to house fires or hazardous chemical spills, dealing with those risks is a known, but what happens when they have a chance of being presented with a contagious virus that could make not just them sick, but also their families and fellow firefighters.

It was a time of a lot of unknowns, and for Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Fire Alan Burgess, that was something outside of the normal status quo.

“Nobody knew how big of an effect it was going to have or how long it was going to go on for,” he said.

“Are we going to be like this for two months, six months or even 12 months, nobody knew.

“It was good to see a really positive outcome and good to see that the process we went through worked.”

“In hindsight it did seem to go quite quickly, but that’s comparing the perception of it now to the perception at the time.”

Burgess said FENZ had been very good at communicating and getting timely advice through to brigades around the country.

The merger of brigades around the country several years ago caused some complaints and has had issues since, but Burgess said having one centralised body had made operating through the pandemic a much easier process.

had symptoms, we would bag all the PPE and it would be left for three days which is the life cycle of the virus.

Ten crews needed for Eiffelton call-out

Cold and windy conditions mixed with challenging terrain kept fire crews attending a call-out in the Eiffelton area busy for more than six hours on Wednesday night.

Crews were first alerted to the call at 6pm, with the last crews not leaving the scene till after midnight.

Willowby Voluntary Rural Fire Force Chief Fire Officer Steve Russell said the fire had started after embers from a fire on a farm a week ago were spread by strong winds.

“The wind picked it up and got out and there was ember transfer everywhere,” he said.

“Embers were spreading towards a house on the property but we were able to get that sorted before they got there.”

Russell said while it was not a big fire, it covered a considerable area with the terrain of gullies and flat areas causing headaches for the responding crews, with some embers spreading between 100 to 150

“It was a big effort from everyone. There was about 10

crews there, so over 50 people,” he said.

“We were there for a few hours to get it under control

with the wind changing.

“By midnight the weather had changed with the rain coming in. Murphy’s law, if it had come in a few hours earlier it would’ve helped a lot.”

Crews from Ashburton, Ashburton Rural, Hinds, Rangitata, Mayfield, Pendarves and Lauriston all attended the fire.

“Pretty much the whole county was there,” he said.

“It was tricky as the biggest issue was getting water to things which is why we needed all the tankers,” he said.

“It took a while to get all the things organised as well given the situation.”

Russell said it was unusual for them to get a call-out of this size around this time of year, and thanked all the crews that attended for their work in tricky conditions to get the situation under control.

On Thursday morning the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade were called to a minor car fire which was able to be extinguished with a fire extinguisher.

FENZ started weekly leaders’ conferences on March 23 where the organisation’s leaders would provide the latest up-to-date information and details.

It was through these conferences that instructions around isolating crews and having minimum crewing on trucks came through as a means to reduce the risk of the virus knocking out an entire brigade should one member be exposed to the virus.

“It was in that second week in March that things really ramped up.

“We have steps in play for all types of emergency incidents with one set of processes already in place, but not for anything like Covid.

“We had PPE for normal emergency responses but nothing for a pandemic-type deal.”

Under Level 4 and 3 the number of incidents dropped off, easing stresses on crews and reducing their potential exposure to the virus if it was out in the community.

“There was an element of surprise with that but it was led by people being home and looking at their own actions a lot more.

“The MVA (motor vehicle accident) scene really dropped off and the work scene dropped off in terms of industrial type accidents and medical incidents.”

Training was another area restricted for firefighters during lockdown, with no full crew training under Level 4 and 3 there were no trainings on a person-to-person basis and that relaxed a little under Level 2 but even then they were restricted to a max of 10 people with the appropriate spacing in place.

In brief School rush crash Nobody was injured following a two-car crash outside the Borough School at around 3pm on Thursday. The crash occurred at the intersection of Park and Short streets. A tow was requested for one of the vehicles. St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said it had been a non-injury incident.

Firearms’ bill passes The government has pushed through its second tranche of firearms changes promised in the wake of last year’s Christchurch shootings. The legislation passed its third and final reading this afternoon with the support of Labour, New Zealand First and the Greens. It paves the way for a gun register and a warning system to show if a licence holder is a fit and proper person. Police Minister Stuart Nash said the new law is designed to stop firearms falling into the wrong hands. Nash said yesterday marked an historic milestone for community safety.

Last year, a law making most semiautomatic firearms illegal passed with near-unanimous political support in the wake of the mosque attacks that left 51 people dead.

Fry-day Fry-up – Country Edition F

or nine weeks the Fry-day Fryup has detailed the highlights and pitfalls of the local fish and chip scene. We’ve been unwavering, unbiased and kept it strictly professional while working our way around the Ashburton township.

We’ve found chips we like, and those we don’t. Fish that literally melts in your mouth and fish that is drowned (can fish actually drown?) in batter and hot dogs that are more dog than they are hot.

But what about the rest of the district?

The outer reaches of Mid Canterbury are just as important as the beating heart and so we deliver, the Fry-day Fry-up – on the road style, courtesy of the trusty blue Guardian wagon.

This week we headed to Methven, to Frydays which can be found nestled in the Methven Mall. A family-owned operation which focuses on the local side of life and has for a long time been a staple part of the weekly diet for those who dwell at the bottom of Mt Hutt.

It should be said, at this point in time, that while changing up the area of target for this review, we’ve also enlisted a new writer too, one who shall remain anonymous because Methven is quite small and any identifica-

So, the actual product. How did it go?

Largely, very well to be fair. I need to admit that the order was placed later on in the evening, in fact the last order to go out for the night – and anyone who’s enjoyed deep-fried food at that point of the evening will agree that by that time things aren’t quite as fresh as they would have been at opening time a few hours earlier.

But overall, it was a solid effort.

At just under the $10 mark for the required scoop of chips, piece of fish and the customary hotdog it was reasonably well valued and there was certainly no disappointing elements in the package.

The fish, although perhaps a little on the small side, was well cooked, not too dry and

flavoursome – the chips equally generous in both size and quality.

They were further enhanced – and here’s the added kicker to ordering late in the evening – by the inclusion of those crispy little morsels that have been floating around in the vat for most of the evening.

Accompanied by my usual choice of condiment, vinegar – they hit the spot with a good amount of salt to add a bit of a taste-kick.

The hotdog was lightly battered, and featured a saveloy, as opposed to a plain sausage, which is always a bonus and it was pretty darn good too.

Overall, it’s hard not to recommend Frydays, a good family-owned affair who produce the goods consistently and on this occasion delivered a quality feed to fulfil the needs of the average eater.

‘I’ll make sure that the system is sorted’ Man charged with two-week-old murder Police have charged a man with the murder of Clifford Umuhuri, who was found dead in central Auckland after a shooting incident.

The body of the 47-year-old was found early one morning more than two weeks ago in Grafton near Auckland Hospital.

Police had earlier responded to reports of gunshots in the suburb of St Johns about five kilometres east.

A search warrant was carried out yesterday at a Druces Road address in Wiri in South Auckland where a 30-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder.

“The enquiry team has worked extremely hard over the past fortnight as they pieced together the events which led to Mr Umuhuri’s death,” detective inspector Lloyd Schmid said.

“Despite the fact an arrest has

been made, this work continues and further charges may be laid in the matter.”

The man was to appear in the Auckland District Court yesterday.

Earlier a 26-year-old man was charged with aggravated robbery.

Police are still appealing for sightings of a silver Nissan Skyline which was in central Auckland about 6am on Monday June 1, which has been recovered.

“This vehicle has travelled from St Johns Road, along Ngapipi Road, Tamaki Drive and Quay Str eet towards Whitaker Place between 6am and 6.24am on June 1.

“We are exploring the possibility that this Nissan Skyline has stopped briefly on the route,” Schmid said.

“We need anyone who saw this vehicle or any suspicious activity along this route to contact the enquiry team.”

Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield has apologised after saying the two new cases on Tuesday will have upset people and shaken people’s confidence.

The revelation two sisters with Covid-19 were released from isolation to visit a dying parent in wellington has exposed “unacceptable” flaws in the system.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Wednesday said the situation was an unacceptable failure of the system and she appointed assistant chief of defence Air Commodore Darryn Webb to oversee and review managed isolation facilities.

At yesterday’s Covid-19 media conference, Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield reiterated that he was alerted late on Wednesday afternoon that the two women had had limited contact with two friends.

He said this happened after they got lost trying to leave Auckland.

The two friends were then tested for Covid-19 – one has returned a negative test and the other person’s test is still pending, Dr Bloomfield said.

He said all possible contacts of the two women were being traced.

“I’ve certainly been upset by it.”

“I’ve taken responsibility to make sure that the system is sorted and we’re getting on and doing that.”

The Prime Minister refused to apologise for the border botchup, when asked about it yesterday.

“Of course I feel huge remorse that this has happened, but I am making sure that we are fixing the system. If I had any personal responsibility for what happened here, of course I’d take that, but my job is to lead. I wear that, and I keep going.”

Ardern said public and government confidence in the border needed to be restored, which is why she has asked the military to oversee all quarantine and isolation facilities.

The Mainland becoming the main land

P

erhaps it’s the wear down of a wet and cold winter’s day that’s impacted on my thinking, but there might just be some merit in the suggestion of South Island independence.

Now, before you run off down the street screaming that the Guardian has gone mad, the editor’s lost the plot and there are conspiracy theories all around us, let me explain my reasons behind it.

Initially, when I first heard about this movement more than a year ago, I laughed at the idea.

Far-fetched, unpalatable and quite possibly ridiculous all came to mind pretty quickly.

But then my patriotic heart kicked in a bit. I’m a Mainland guy through and through – and with as much jest as you’d like to give it, I often look down my nose at those from the northern reaches of our country.

I’m joking, of course.

Down here in the Mainland, it’s a little more of the old true-blue Kiwi fashioned way of doing things. We’re not worried about having the nice, flash-looking, car parked in the driveway of our multi-million dollar home, we’re just as happy with the farm ute and a nice house with a good fire to handle those cold winter months.

So, in so many ways – more than I could list in this small space – we’re already doing our own thing compared to our neighbours from the north. We live our own lifestyle. One which seems so much more relaxed when we travel north and one which must seem a whole lot slower when they travel down here.

Of course, none of these actually equate to the reasons why there is a movement to see independence given to the South Island, but they are valid talking points without a doubt.

The chances of it actually happening?

Slim to none.

We did manage to rid ourselves of Covid-19 before the North Island did though, so perhaps we’ve got some weight if it ever walks into the debating room for further discussion.

Testing and tracing essential

N

ew Zealand is one of a handful of countries where community transmission of Covid-19 has been eliminated.

But with two new cases announced on Wednesday and another yesterday, we have learned that elimination is not the end – rather, it’s the start of the next phase.

After 24 consecutive days with no new cases, the announcement that two people returning from overseas tested positive does not mean New Zealand’s elimination strategy has failed. Just two weeks ago, we estimated we were likely to see one or two cases a week at New Zealand’s border.

The two travellers in question came from the UK, where the disease is still very active.

The two women arrived in New Zealand on June 7 via Doha and Brisbane and stayed in a managed isolation hotel in Auckland.

They were granted an exemption on compassionate grounds to travel to Wellington, to visit their dying parent on June 13.

Such compassionate exemptions from managed isolation have now been temporarily suspended.

This development shows how important our border controls

are. Currently, all new arrivals must remain in quarantine for at least 14 days, unless they receive an exemption. It is unlikely someone is still infectious after 14 days without showing symptoms, so this should minimise the chances of spread from overseas arrivals.

As these cases show however, this does not mean the risk is zero.

Whether from an exemption on compassionate grounds as in this case, people working at the border, or from people getting

infected shortly before leaving quarantine, it is inevitable that new cases will make it across the border.

As we explained in our previous article, to stop the virus coming back, we need more than just good border controls.

New Zealanders will need to keep avoiding the three Cs of possible infection – closed spaces, crowded places and close contact – as best they can, and it’s crucial we keep meticulously tracking where we’ve been and who we’ve been in contact with.

It also shows the importance of getting tested. One of the travellers reported mild symptoms, but did not associate these with Covid-19. Anybody with symptoms should get tested and stay home until the results come through, especially if they have had contact with someone who has been overseas or works in a high-contact job.

Now that New Zealand is at Alert Level 1 and 40,000 people can go to the rugby, it’s more important than ever that we don’t let our guard down.

I am also not about to start saying that black people don’t have it any tougher than white people and with hard work they can achieve whatever they set out to do.

I do believe the latter part of that comment is true though and I would cite, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Muhammad Ali, as examples.

But, an interview that Ali did with Parkinson, from 1971, reminds me that black people do start out on the back foot.

In that interview he talked about when he was a wee fella, asking his mother, “Why is everything white”?

He talked about Jesus being white as well as all of those who attended the last supper.

have given myself a case of torticollis (stiff neck) due to the amount of head shaking I’ve been doing of late.

The response to George Floyd’s death in the Divided States of America, and in other parts of the world, has left me speechless at times.

Don’t get me wrong, I think the police actions were horrific and the cop responsible for George’s death should rot in a prison cell.

Yes, black lives matter, BUT so do all others.

In my opinion the protests should be aimed at the police brutality of all people.

Because, when it comes to dishing out death by police shooting, the cops in the US certainly aren’t biased.

In 2017 457 white people were shot by police and died, while 223 black people and 179 Hispanics met the same demise.

In 2018 the numbers were; 399 white, 209 black and 148 Hispanic.

Year to date this year; 172 white, 88 black and 57 Hispanic.

I’m not about to criticise people protesting or marching for a cause, BUT do it legally!

I have to wonder if those who were vandalising stores and looting them really had the cause in mind at all when they

Tretis is a black American bloke in his sixties that I became mates with while I was in Memphis a few years ago.

While driving me to Graceland, we passed a big, old house with the confederate flag painted on one side of it and high fences.

I asked him what the place was and he said it’s the KKK meeting house.

“Jeez, how do you feel about that being in your neighbourhood?” I said.

His reply made me smile and you need to imagine the Southern accent kicking in too, “Well, they don’t bother me none, so I don’t bother them none.”

More of us could take a leaf out of his book, eh?

Cecil Rhodes statue to go AP The governing body of Oxford University’s Oriel College on has recommended the removal of a statue of Victorian imperialist Cecil Rhodes that has long been the target of protests – though it won’t be taken down immediately.

The college’s governors said they had “voted to launch an Independent Commission of Inquiry into the key issues surrounding the Rhodes statue”.

In a statement, Oriel College’s governing body, made up of faculty, said they had “expressed their wish to remove the statue of Cecil Rhodes” and a plaque to him, adding that “this is what they intend to convey to the Independent Commission of Inquiry”.

Rhodes made a fortune in the late 19th century from gold and diamond mines where miners laboured in brutal conditions. He was an education benefactor whose legacy includes Oxford University’s prestigious Rhodes scholarships, which have been awarded to international students for over a century.

Famous Rhodes scholars include former US President Bill Clinton and feminist writer Naomi Wolf.

His statue was removed from the University of Cape Town in South Africa in 2015 after students led a Rhodes Must Fall campaign.

PHOTO AP sought the removal of his statue in Oxford. The movement had gained new momentum since the death of George Floyd spurred anti-racism protests worldwide and a renewed debate on colonialism and its legacy in Britain.

Other historical monuments and statues around the world, honouring figures from Christopher Columbus to Belgium’s King Leopold II, have since become flash-points in protests.

Earlier this month, Black Lives Matter protesters pulled down a controversial statue of 17th-century slave trader Edward Colston in the English

city of Bristol and threw it into the harbour.

Colston was prominently involved in England’s slaving company, the Royal African Company, which transported tens of thousands of Africans across the Atlantic Ocean.

Oriel’s governors said the new commission would include people from academia, education policy, law, politics and journalism. The commission aims to look into how to improve access to black and ethnic minority students and faculty, and review “how the college’s 21st-century commitment to diversity can sit

more easily with its past”.

The Rhodes statue will stay up until the inquiry finishes its work later this year.

In a statement, the Rhodes Must Fall campaign group said it welcomed Oriel College’s intention to take down the statue, but demanded a stronger commitment to follow it through.

“This is a potentially epoch-defining moment for our institution, the University of Oxford. We can, potentially, offer a powerful example of the decolonial project in higher education in the UK and beyond,” the group said.

Explosion spells end to co-operation AP Only two years ago, the leaders of North and South Korea shared drinks, laughs and vows for peace during three highly orchestrated summits that lowered fears of war that had risen as Pyongyang pursued an arsenal of nuclear missiles.

That’s all gone, for now, and it ended with a bang.

The North on Tuesday blew up an empty office building that had allowed the two Koreas to talk in person in the North Korean border town of Kaesong. Pyongyang also said it was scrapping a key military agreement aimed at reducing conventional threats along the border.

The largely symbolic, madefor-TV, explosion has shattered already fading hopes in South Korea that the basic foundation of co-operation with its rival could be salvaged. It’s also stoked public fear that the Korean Peninsula will once again take its place as a global hotspot.

While North Korea’s actions may appear abrupt and reckless, the leadership in Pyongyang may be executing a carefully

It’s a pattern that has repeated over the decades. When Washington doesn’t give the North what it wants, Pyongyang dials up pressure on the South.

North Korea may be betting that Seoul can be drawn back into dialogue, despite the demolished building and hurt feelings, because of liberal South Korean President Moon Jae-in’s passion for engagement.

For now, the North seems focused on elevating tensions

in phases.

It has declared its intention to send troops to now-shuttered North-South co-operation sites in Kaesong and at the Diamond Mountain resort, and to reinstall guard posts and resume military exercises in front-line areas.

That would nullify a bilateral military agreement reached in 2018 that established border buffers and no-fly zones and would increase the risk of clashes.

The public face of the North’s recent bashing of the South is Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister

of leader Kim Jong Un, who has been confirmed as his top official on inter-Korean affairs.

Once all smiles during meetings with South Korean officials on a rare visit to Seoul, Kim Yo Jong now calls South Korea an “enemy” and has vented over Seoul’s failure to stop activists from floating anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border.

Although North Korea is sensitive to those leaflets’ criticism, it’s unlikely the country is rupturing relations with Seoul merely over something that has gone on for years.

Instead, the goal appears to be regaining the world’s attention – and especially Washington’s – in a bid for much-needed aid and boosting a populace worried about economic hardship.

The North’s calculated belligerence comes during longstalled nuclear negotiations. It also comes as the coronavirus pandemic likely further batters the already broken North Korean economy.

The North could be deliberately censuring the South to build internal unity and shift public attention away from diplomatic failures and economic shortcomings.

It’s been some years since cult Aussie drama McLeod’s Daughters was last on our screens but the faces of Drovers Run have made a lasting impact with their fans, with many campaigning for years for the TV show’s return. And now the fans are finally getting what they want with the show’s writer and producer Posie GraemeEvans announcing that an “exciting” McLeod’s Daughters movie is officially in the works, thanks to a new government grant announced by Australian Minister for the Arts Elise Archer. On her Instagram page Graeme-Evans confirmed the feature film was well and truly under way.

Outrage at actress choice Not everyone is happy with the casting of a new film about Princess Diana and her infamous relationship with Prince Charles.

Former Twilight star Kristen Stewart has been cast to play the late princess in the film Spencer, due for release next year.

The film will be set at Sandringham in the early 1990s and will be based around a single weekend in which Diana realises her marriage isn’t working. However, the reaction to news of Stewart’s casting wasn’t exactly favourable on social media. Stewart is best known for playing Bella Swan in the successful Twilight franchise and most recently was one of three angels in a Charlie’s Angels reboot.

Masterson on rape charges That 70s Show star Daniel Masterson has been charged with raping three women by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. According to Hollywood Reporter, authorities believe the alleged separate incidents occurred between 2001 and 2003. Masterson, who played Steven Hyde on the popular sitcom, has been accused of raping a 23-year-old woman between January and December 2001, a 28-year-old woman in April 2003 and another 23-year-old woman between October and December of 2003.

Los Angeles police began investigating Masterson over sexual-assault claims in 2017, he was arrested this week.

How to make the N

o doubt you know that we spend around one-third of our lives sleeping, but has that affected what you take into account when buying a bed? And what’s fashionable right now when it comes to accessorising your bedroom?

Choices. These days we face so many of them, and that’s most certainly the case when we’re bed and mattress shopping.

As with most furniture purchases you ultimately tend to get what you pay for, but even if you can’t afford very top-of-the-range right now, it’s useful to know what to look for and breaking down some of the current jargon around bedbuying can be helpful.

Farmers marketing manager for home, Jessica Lawrence, says that a continuous coil system is where the entire framework of the bed’s mattress is made of wire.

“This means that they are all connected to one another, so if partner disturbance is an issue in your bedroom, this might not be the option to go for.

“It’s a cost-effective system though, and it works well for heavier people.”

Alternatively, in a pocketspring mattress, the individual springs are encased in fabric and because they’re individual, you tend to keep to yourself in bed and not bother the other person.

In a zoned pocket spring mattress, some zones have extra support, which is typically achieved with a tighter coiled spring – for example, in the central third of the bed, where there is typically the most weight on the mattress.

Jessica says that the latest, and perhaps most notable, current technology is KülKōte, which assists in temperature management.

This system was initially developed for use in space, and according to manufacturers, Sleepyhead, a unique waterbased polymer is used in conjunction with temperature reactive microcapsules to create a breathable, non-toxic and environmentally friendly surface infusion that absorbs and releases heat energy at specific temperatures, for a more comfortable sleep.

Generally speaking, in terms of price, here in New Zealand, the sky is practically the limit when it comes to choosing a bed, and an especially opulent king bedframe base and mattress can be right up there with a small car,

at around $11,000. Harvey Norman stocks beds at this price-point, wherein you’re looking at a Danish-made, split super-king. adjustable bed with therapeutic support and individual elevation.

For elderly people, suffering with stiff joints this may well be a worthwhile investment as it offers contour features that really do shape to your body and this type of bed is especially good if one or other of you sleeps best in a more upright position.

On the other hand, if budget is a major consideration, there are some good basic, new beds for sale online and at major chain stores, but it’s important to inspect what’s on offer and read the descriptions carefully.

While some do come with a mattress, not all mattresses are created equal, by any stretch of the imagination, and you may find yourself with something that’s so thin as to be totally ineffective and very uncomfortable, so do make a point of using question and answer features to ensure you know exactly what’s on offer.

While it’s possible to find inexpensive, fashion-forward linen, both on-line and at the mall, if you’re buying a quality bed it pays to invest in quality pillows, duvet covers and sheets.

Savoury muffins with NZ bacon 100g NZ bacon rashers, diced 2 1/2 C self-raising flour Salt and pepper to taste 125g butter, melted 1C milk 2 eggs, whisked 150g grated cheese 1 onion, diced 1/2 red capsicum, diced 1/2 C parsley, chopped ■■ Preheat oven to 150°C. ■■ In a small pan, fry the onion, bacon and capsicum until the onion is just soft. Vespa, but not as we know it

V

espa GTS goes down in history as one of the world’s best-loved two-wheelers, taking up the baton from the legendary Vespone, the name given to those Vespas with a large, strictly steel body.

Vespa can transport you around the city with style but it is also ready to travel and even adventure, thanks to increasingly generous engine capacity.

The big body of Vespa, in its modern shape with automatic transmission, was born in 2003, with the first arrival of the Vespa GT 125 and 200.

A

mongst the now many excellent engine/gearbox pairings available from the various car manufacturers, Hyundai’s 1.6-litre four cylinder turbo-petrol and 7-speed dual-clutch auto combination continues to stand out.

This combo is an option for the Kona, Tucson, i-30 and Veloster, albeit with slightly different power outputs for some of them.

My first drive experience happened to be a return trip to Queenstown in a then-recently released and very new 1.6T Kona Elite.

During the drive the Kona impressed, not only with its performance (especially as the 130kW/265Nm version of this engine freed up) but also with its comfort, surefooted all-wheel-drive grip and cornering ability.

With regard to the latter, 1.6T Konas have a sportier multi-link rear suspension setup in place of the torsion beam rear of the 2litre, non-turbo models.

Then for this slightly quirky, sportily low sitting, three-door (yes that’s a rear lefthand-side-only passenger door) Veloster, the 1.6T engine produces 150kW, an extra 20kW to that in the Kona.

While the torque figure is the same 265Nm from 1500 to 4500rpm, both the Veloster and the similarly powered i 30 N-Line have over-boost functions for peak performance.

Once again the slick 7-speed dual clutch auto so readily does its job.

Even in the Smart setting of the selectable four mode system, the performance is as enjoyable and satisfying as you wish or want it to be.

Response is immediate and there’s the

ability to dispatch 0 to 100kmh in 7.1 seconds.

But then the Veloster just as easily slots into cruising sedately at 100kmh on the open road at 2000rpm.

Doing this on a drive from home to Christchurch saw 6.4L/100km on the trip computer. Hyundai quote an overall figure of 7.1L/100Km. The Veloster sits on the same platform as the latest i30 and has a new independent, multi-link rear suspension setup, together with a torque vectoring control system.

Plus it has been tuned to be an engaging companion for ANZAC driving conditions.

It turns-in nicely and corners with appreciated verve and lots of grip, courtesy of the wide Michelin Pilot Sport tyres.

Expectedly, the ride is on the firmer side, but is still more than acceptably comfortable over most of the road surfaces that you’ll likely ever be driving on, and that’s either your daily stuff about town, or that favoured “therapeutic” drive on some nicely winding road.

The well-presented cabin has a quality feel with its abundance of

soft-touch materials on the dash and door trims.

It also has red highlights and stitching in keeping with the Veloster’s sporty nature.

You sit low and comfortable in the heated/ventilated, leather-covered front seats, with a glazed sun roof above.

Access is easy via the large, wide opening doors, but care is needed with these in car-parks.

There’s of course a touchscreen for the infotainment system in the easy-to-read and use dash, plus a head-up display, wireless phone charging and an 8-speaker Infinity sound system.

Hyundai’s SmartSense comprehensive array of active safety and driver aids is of course both reassuring and helpful.

This includes, brake-force distribution/ assist, stability/traction control, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, highbeam assist, and driver attention.

Using the adaptive cruise control is a necessity, for the Veloster certainly has the ability of inviting you to go faster!

The two seats in the rear are accessed by the single rear door, so it’s pretty easy to get in to sit in the left hand seat.

The week in sport: Three big talking points

S

uper Rugby’s stuttering start Live sport finally resumed in New Zealand at the weekend with Super Rugby Aotearoa lifting off into uncharted quarters.

Pictures of the blue-and-gold diehards in the Zoo reverberated around the country and beyond as we all revelled in the return of the national game.

Were both games the fluent spectacles we had envisioned?

Of course not.

However that was more down to the revamped policing of the breakdown, which rendered large periods of both games into stuttering, stop-start affairs.

In fact, the standard of play was surprisingly high all things con-

sidered, especially in the Highlanders v Chiefs game which, despite being peppered with 30 penalties as both teams struggled to adapt, was an entertaining first hurrah, with the Southerners getting out of jail in the shadows of full time.

The same probably can’t be said about the Blues v Hurricanes game, where rust appeared to be more of a factor in an error-ridden game.

However, the Dane Coles try and celebration immediately passed its way into folklore as Beauden Barrett conceded the moment was “meant to be”.

And how good did Eden Park look for a Super Rugby game?

Probably not since the 1998 final I’d say.

The enigma that is the Warriors Buckle up and all aboard the rollercoaster that is the Warriors.

Attempting to rationalise an impressive win within the context of the games which preceded the Cowboys game at the weekend is a futile task.

Just expect consistent inconsistency from here on out.

After being shut out not once but twice already this season,

with some serious questions being asked about how much sting their attack has, they dotted down seven times against the Cowboys for a 37 point haul.

The Rabbitohs should offer a sterner examination, as they find themselves in a five team logjam for the eight, which includes the Warriors themselves.

Like living in a post-Covid climate, lets take it one week and one game at a time for now.

Netball’s precarious launch The tweaks to Netball’s ANZ premiership have not stopped, days out from the competition’s restart.

The line which came out of Netball New Zealand as New Zealand moved into Alert Level 1 was that games were going to remain

in Auckland. However, earlier this week it was confirmed the draw had been revised with teams able to play some games at their home venues.

The 180 from NNZ appears to have been driven from the players themselves, however any notion of an even playing field you can forget.

The biggest winner of the revised draw is the Central Pulse, who have a total of four home games to their disposal compared to the Mainland Tactix with one game in Christchurch on July 30.

It seems like one logistical nightmare this overhaul would have caused, only for it to a result in a competition with a massive asterisk next to it.

Williams up for US Open

Cane still a non-starter for Chiefs

Fears that strict health protocols due to the coronavirus could deter the game’s biggest names from competing at this year’s US Open have been somewhat allayed with Serena Williams confirming she will play the event.

Williams, in a video message played during a United States Tennis Association news conference to announce that its marquee tournament will be played from August 31-September 13 without fans, said she misses the excitement of competition.

“Ultimately, I really cannot wait to return to New York and play the US Open 2020,” the seven-times champion said.

“I feel like the USTA is going to do a really good job of ensuring everything is amazing and everything is perfect and everyone is safe.”

A number of top players, including world number ones Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Australian Ash Barty along with reigning US Open men’s champion Rafa Nadal, are among those who have expressed concerns about attending the US Open.

Women’s world number two Simona Halep says she won’t attend the tournament due to the health protocols.

One sticking point is the number of support staff they can bring on site, which the USTA said it is still trying to sort out.

The decision will impact the upper echelon of players who typically travel to events with a coach, hitting partner, physiotherapist and fitness guru.

“We understand the needs of athletes,” US Open tournament director Stacey Allaster said during a video conference from the centre court at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“We just need to make sure that we navigate physical distancing and ensure that we keep everyone spread out and also everyone gets the proper training and preparation that they need.”

All Blacks captain Sam Cane is again missing from the Chiefs lineup named to play the Blues in Hamilton on Saturday night.

Cane is suffering from a back injury which saw him also miss the Super Rugby Aotearoa opening round in the Chiefs one point loss to the Highlanders in Dunedin last weekend.

The injury is unrelated to the serious neck injury playing against the Springboks two years ago, but coach Warren Gatland admits it’s frustrating.

“He’s had this issue with his back just tightening up.

“It seems to come right and then it just flares up again.

“On Tuesday he felt good and he’s done a bit of contact work and it’s just tightened up.

“He’s disappointed, but we just want to make sure he gets it right and we won’t be taking any risks with it,” said Gatland.

Former All Black Aaron Cruden will start at first five in the only change to the starting line-up from last week while another former All Black, 38-year-old loose forward veteran ex-pat Mid Cantabrian Adam Thomson is on the bench.

Serena Williams says she cannot wait for the excitement of the US Open to begin.

Allaster also said players who do not want to stay at one of the two designated hotels can rent homes in the New York area, but they cannot actually stay in Manhattan.

The Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, home to the US Open, will also host the Western & Southern Open, which is normally held in Ohio, from August 22-28 as part of efforts to stem the spread of the virus.

Testing will be conducted before travelling to the United States and 1-2 times per week

at both events along with daily temperature checks.

During the US Open, which this year will not include a mixed doubles tournament, players and guests must wear masks when onsite unless practising or competing.

There will be linespersons for matches inside both Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium but none on the other courts, where a chair umpire will work with the electronic line-calling system HawkEye Live.

Should an athlete test positive, they will be isolated and cared for by a USTA medical professional who will determine whether treatment can be done at the hotel or if the individual needs to be hospitalised.

“We all go into this understanding the risk and our responsibility,” Allaster said.

“As in every year, the health and wellbeing of our athletes, their safety is absolutely paramount to our medical team and it will be unwavering during this event.”

Spartan approach to huge battle

If there is any pointer to the challenge ahead for Mid Canterbury Combined’s 1st XV, comparing their quest to a Hollywood epic should paint the picture.

The return of head coach Shane Enright has inspired the players to tag themselves after the Spartans, an ode to the 2006 Zack Snyder film 300.

“I think it’s very much like the Spartan 300 taking on the Persian Army,” Enright said.

“They’ve really built into that.”

The squad had broken off into groups where each faction was named after a Spartan province, a

collective ethos which the coaches hope will galvanise the team.

The task at hand does not come more formidable for Combined in their opening competition match-up as they travel north to take on the defending UC champions Nelson College tomorrow.

“We’re just going to have to try our best and defend and attack when we get the opportunity.

“We know it’s a huge task.

“As long as they play 70 minutes of rugby and if we’re good enough we’re good enough and if we’re not, we’re not.

“As long as they don’t give up, which I don’t think they will with

the feeling they’ve got at the moment.”

Coaching staff have been heartened by the players’ response to some of the fresh measures implemented in pre-season, where a focus on fitness and training has left the playing group of 30 eager.

“It’s shown that they’ve bought in by the fact we haven’t lost anyone,” Enright said.

“It’s really exciting to have 30plus kids running around, even though it’s a disappointment to let some of them go.

“It’s a good buzz.”

The team have had a setback with star recruit Michael Hennings struck down with injury,

which is set to keep him out for 4-6 weeks.

However the side does boast some notable talent in the form of Mount Hutt College playmakers Charlie Brown and Sam Ree. Isi Ula, who is being moved into the openside flank from halfback, offered coaches a unique conundrum.

“I looked at him at the start of the season and he had a really good pass on him, and we weren’t sure what we were going to do at halfback.

“He put on 6kgs over Covid and grew a bit taller.”

And it will be in the loose where the fireworks should oc-

cur in tomorrow’s clash.

Nelson College boast some impressive bulk, particularly at 8 and 6.

Enright said the 2019 UC Championship winners were well drilled all over the park.

“They’re just a good team with a good culture. They’ll want to be winners again this year.

“But the good thing first-up is you never know what’s going to happen.”

With rain forecast for Nelson both today and tomorrow morning, conditions could be a significant leveller in which the game could develop into a forward-orientated grind.

The players are the key to rugby’s revolution

I

f the rugby revolution ever comes, it increasingly appears as if it will be player led.

The admirable Daniel Leo is off to a good start, but there’s only so many fires one man can put out.

Founder and chief executive of Pacific Rugby Players Welfare Leo, a former Manu Samoa representative, has attracted Ardie Savea, Jerome Kaino and Ngani Laumape – among others – to the organisation’s board in recent days.

Put simply, World Rugby’s attempts to help nations such as Samoa, Tonga and Fiji become – or return to being – competitive on the international stage have failed.

World Rugby’s eligibility laws haven’t helped, nor the cherry-picking of talent by nations such as New Zealand. But, as Leo pointed out this week, the nations

themselves are also culpable.

World Rugby have funded the governing bodies of these Pacific nations to the tune of tens of millions of dollars in the last few years.

“But where’s that gone?,’’ Leo asked.

The addition of a player such as Savea is critical to the rejuvenation of Samoa, for instance. Few players possess the following, or social conscience, that Savea has and while he might represent New Zealand as a player, his heart is very much with the nation of his parents birth.

The more men of his standing who use that platform to put pressure on administrators and governments to do better and to be transparent, the greater the likelihood that things might change.

Rugby’s problems are far broader than that, though, and the players have a role there too.

Hopes of creating a global

season have again floundered, thanks to those in Europe.

Historically it was the Six Nations teams: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy, who were reluctant to play ball.

Where there is a problem is when those wages start to bankrupt unions and clubs or lead to flagrant cheating.

Now it’s clubs, specifically in France and England, who don’t want to compromise.

And fair enough too.

These are privately-owned enterprises who pay players a pretty penny. It’s not in their interest to create pathways for those players to go off and play international rugby instead.

That’s a blow for an organisation such as New Zealand Rugby (NZR). They’ve set their stall on a global season and the riches that regular international and club football between northern and southern hemisphere sides is likely to bring.

Why? Well we all know why.

To pay their players enough money that they won’t fall into the clutches of those dastardly club owners over in Europe.

People often say that you can’t blame a player for simply being paid what he’s worth. If a club or governing body want to pay him absurd amounts of money, then that’s not the player’s fault.

And that’s true. At least to a point. Where there is a problem is when those wages start to bankrupt unions and clubs or lead to flagrant cheating.

Clubs in England, for example, are going broke. The Leicester Tigers are reported to be facing financial losses of $9.9m this year.

Agreement has been reached to reduce next season’s salary cap by $NZ3.8 million, in an effort to stem the tide.

And then there’s Saracens, who have been the dominant club of recent years. Their rort of the existing salary cap was so extensive

Change clearly needs to come to English rugby, but there’s not a lot of evidence that the clubs, or those running the competition, are equipped to make it.

At least not while the players continue to demand the kind of money they’re on.

In the same way that you feel it’s only players who can lead systemic change in Pacific Islands rugby, so it is that players need to help make the game more sustainable globally.

It’s all very well to display a social conscience when it comes to race or sexuality or violence towards women, but you don’t see any All Blacks offering to take pay cuts so NZR staff can retain their jobs or lamenting the financial losses suffered by club owners.

The time has come for rugby’s big earners to put their money where their mouth is.

Excited about hometrack resumption Nigel Tiley would usually be enjoying the warmer climate of Queensland at this time of year, however, the Pukekohe trainer is getting set to line-up a handful of his team at his home track tomorrow.

“Normally we go and base ourselves at the Sunshine Coast for

a couple of months, but unfortunately that didn’t happen this year,” Tiley said. “But so far the weather hasn’t been too bad.”

Tomorrow’s Counties meeting will mark the resumption of thoroughbred racing in New Zealand after a three month Covid-19 enforced hiatus and Tiley is just hap-

py to be back racing, despite the heavy winter conditions.

“It is going to be great,” Tiley said. “It is just nice to be able to walk them down the hill, give them a run, and bring them back up and put them back in their box.

“It is unfortunate that it has come up a Heavy11. I didn’t expect

it to be a Heavy11, but it is what it is, and there is some rain forecast between now and the weekend.

“That might just loosen it up a little bit for us.”

Tiley said he was able to keep some of his team in light work over the lockdown period, which has allowed a number of his team

to be quite forward heading into racing’s return.

Tiley will have five representatives, including seven-win mare Lupelani, who will tackle the Dunstan Supporting Life After Racing (1100m). “She has gone well fresh in the past,” Tiley said. “She is forward enough for Saturday.”

Long wait finally over As competition finally gets under way this weekend, there’s perhaps no other netballer in the country who’s endured the kind of excruciating wait that former Silver Fern Temalisi Fakahokotau has.

The Mainland Tactix defender suffered a cruel injury in September 2018, ruling her out of last year’s ANZ Premiership, and ruining her World Cup dream.

After a number of false starts, the naturally gifted defender is finally looking at some consistent game time, when the ANZ Premiership resumes tonight.

The Aucklander first turned heads as an exciting 19-year-old following an impressive 2014 season with the Northern Mystics, which quickly led to a Silver Ferns call-up.

Fakahokotau subsequently slipped down the defensive pecking order before reinventing herself after moving to the Mainland Tactix in 2017.

She worked on her fitness and a supremely well-conditioned Faka-

hokotau produced a stellar season for the Tactix, resulting in a Silver Ferns’ recall.

By the time the 2018 Commonwealth Games came around, Fakahokotau had cemented her place in the Ferns, but it would be the side’s worst performance at a pinnacle event when they finished fourth on the Gold Coast.

Fakahokotau then had another standout ANZ Premiership campaign, topping all the main defensive stats for the league, and thrilling with her on-the-run intercepts.

Dame Noeline Taurua was announced as the next Silver Ferns’ coach and it was at her first training camp in charge that Fakahokotau ruptured her ACL in her right knee.

It was a massive blow for the 22-test defender, just as the team was embarking on a new journey.

She admits it was a difficult time but doesn’t like to dwell on it.

The Silver Ferns’ Development Squad member says her motivation right now is all focused on the Tactix.

“For myself to be brutally honest, my goals are just to get out there on court and do the best I can for the Tactix and not try and think too far ahead of things.

“Whatever happens happens, but my first job, and my first priority at the moment, is trying to put out a full 60 minutes of consistency for the Tactix.”

The Southern Steel, Tactix, and Pulse will fly to Auckland each weekend for the first part of the season.

On Saturday the Tactix play the Steel, on Sunday the defending champs the Pulse play the Northern Stars. The Stars and the Tactix then play one another on Monday night.

Tonight the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic play the Mystics.

The historic Bruce Beckley Memorial Cup will enter a new phase of existence this weekend when the Mid Canterbury Senior B rugby competition begins for the year.

The cup, which hails back more than 50 years, was donated by Muriel and Ron Beckley following the tragic passing of their son, Bruce, and has been competed

for each season since Old Boys first etched their name on it in 1962.

Traditionally, it’s been the final act of the Senior B season, battled for between the top two sides during the season on the Sunday following finals weekend – and always, weather permitting, at the Mt Somers Rugby Club.

But in 2020, things are changing.

Although the location will re-

main the same, for this week at least.

Mid Canterbury Rugby Union, in conjunction with the Beckley family, yesterday announced the cup will this year become a challenge trophy, played for each week of the competition.

And Mt Somers have fittingly been given the first honour of being the Cup’s holder.

“In light of he strong association of the Beckley Cup with the

Mt Somers Rugby Club and to signify the new era for the cup, it has been decided that the cup will be handed to the Mt Somers Club as the inaugural holder under the new format,” Mid Canterbury rugby boss, Ian Patterson said.

The Methven Senior Bs were awarded the Beckley Cup last year after Rakaia pulled out of the match in the days leading up to the fixture and at various times weather, and in particular snow, has seen the match kept to the sidelines.
