Mid Canterbury was blanketed by snow yesterday as a powerful winter storm wrought havoc across the South Island. Many schools sent children home early as snow fell thick and fast, blanketing much of the district. Schools in Methven, Mount Somers and Lauriston kept their doors closed today, advising parents to keep children at home.
By mid-afternoon up to 15cm of snow was believed to be on the ground in Mount Somers while heavy snow also fell in Methven, Mayfield and at Lake Coleridge. Ashburton, Hinds and Rakaia were also hit by the wintry blast, with thick snow flurries falling for much of the afternoon. Temperatures fell to 1°C in Ashburton yesterday afternoon and were expected to hit below freezing overnight. The snow made travel on the
roads treacherous with one car colliding with a pole on Ashburton Staveley Road. Both the Mid Canterbury Schools’ Music Festival and Methven Primary School production were postponed. While the icy weather caused problems for much of the district, staff at Mt Hutt were rejoicing. General manager of operations James Urquhart estimated 30cm of snow had fallen on the mountain by mid-afternoon yes-
terday, and by 9pm last night that had risen to 90cm. Mr Urquhart said it was one of the biggest snowfalls he had seen in recent years, but skiers would have to wait to hit the slopes. A decision was made last night to close the ski area today due to avalanche risks.
