Opening of a Masjid in Ashburton has come at just the right time for the town’s Muslim community. The new place of worship for the religion of Islam, in the former Tinwald Methodist Church building, opened on Friday. Ashburton Muslim Association secretary Mubashir Mukhtar said about 70 people belonged to the association, representing about 25 families from about 12 different nationalities. Some had been in the town for more than 10 years, and with members leading busy lives, a place such as this was needed for people to come together and take the time out to gather and pray. “The significance of Islam is to bring all the people together and to look after

each other, brotherhood, sisterhood,” Mukhtar said. Members are currently observing the month of Ramadan, fasting from sunrise to sunset, and this will culminate in the Eid festival on June 26, 27 and 28 at the Ashburton Masjid. On Friday before the first prayer meeting in the afternoon, Mukhtar and association president Mohamed Diab were preparing the premises by installing prayer mats and making sure there was space outside for worshippers to leave their shoes. There is one prayer room for men and one for women. Prayer meetings are to be held in line with Islamic tradition of five times per day, and the Masjid will be open to all. There will be classes held there on the Quran and Islamic teaching and learning. Mukhtar said members were look-

ing forward to collaborating with the community, and they had already been talking to groups such as the Hakatere Marae and Salvation Army. Later this year a workshop would be held in conjunction with the Mid Canterbury Newcomers’ Network and Volunteering Mid and South Canterbury. “If people have any type of question they can just ask us, the place is open, no restriction for any gender or ethnicity or any culture or any religion, it is open to all,” Mukhtar said. The Ashburton Masjid, yet to be named, is the fourth Masjid in the South Island, the other three being in Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill. As such it represented an important place in the South Island for people to stop and rest and pray as they travelled through.
