Donna Favel now knows what it feels like to sit on the other side of the fence.

The Ashburton District’s incumbent mayor yesterday confirmed that she would seek re-election at this year’s local government elections in October and instead of being the challenger doing the chasing, Favel is now the one be-

ing chased.

“It’s a completely different situation than what I experienced last time around,” she said.

Speculation has been rife around the district over the past couple of weeks that Favel, who has completed one term as mayor, would not seek to stand again, but on the eve of nominations officially opening, she decided to make her inten-

tions public.

“I’ve taken my time to reflect, not only on my time as mayor, but also on my personal life and have come to the decision that I still feel I have something to give to the role,” she said.

Youth Parliament an ‘incredible experience’

Ashburton’s Jessica Timmo has had an eventful two days in Parliament as a Youth MP this week.

She delivered a heart-felt speech about mental health, supported a landmark motion for declaring a climate emergency, and witnessed one of her fellow Youth MPs reduced to tears after their speech.

The latter event occurred after fellow 17-year-old, Lily Dorrance, was talking about mental health and describing the loss of a friend to suicide.

Senior National MP Anne Tolley, presiding as chair, rebuked Dorrance for reading from notes.

“It was such a sensitive topic and it came from my heart,” Dorrance said afterwards. “And she was trying to tell me because I was reading it, it wasn’t coming from my heart.”

“When she interrupted me it was awful … As soon as I sat down I burst into tears and had to leave … It was just humiliating.”

Timmo came to the defence of Dorrance, telling the Guardian yesterday that Tolley’s expectation that Youth MPs not read from their notes had not been specifically laid out in the Youth Parliament standing orders.

“I do believe she (Tolley) was quite harsh, because we are youth and we are doing it for the first time,” Timmo said.

Other Youth MPs also came to Dorrance’s defence, saying they were horrified, and one even tweeting Tolley’s behaviour was “utterly disgusting”.

But Tolley later apologised and said in a statement she felt terrible about the exchange, and that

she was trying to get Youth MPs to speak from their notes, rather than just read them.

By the time Timmo got to do her speech, Trevor Mallard was back in the speaker’s chair, much to the relief of Timmo.

Timmo said she was able to avoid reading from her notes at the start of her speech, but ended up relying on them a little more as

her speech went on.

Her talk was about the need for real change in the way society dealt with mental illness, particularly in light of a high suicide rate in Canterbury and New Zealand.

Another big event in Timmo’s week was joining with a majority of her fellow Youth MPs and voting to support a motion put forward by Chlöe Swarbrick’s Youth

MP, Luke Wijohn.

The 2019 Youth Parliament declared a climate emergency via the motion.

“It is a shame that the National Party have so far refused to work constructively to implement and plan action needed, but I hold hope that this signal from their Youth MPs will be enough to get their heads out of the sand,” Swarbrick said.

The motion had the support of not only Timmo, but also Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon’s Youth MP Phoebe Scarsbrook.

“Climate change is something that Youth Parliament took very seriously, it’s our future that is being debated. If our planet is ruined because older generations are not able to bring about meaningful change, then that will affect younger people most of all,” Scarsbrook said.

Timmo agreed and said studies have shown that in 12 years the earth will be past the point of irreversible climate change unless action was taken now.

Timmo will be back to her Year 12 studies at Ashburton College next week, but has fantastic memories of her time spent in the halls of power in Wellington. She said it had been great to get a taste, generally, for what it would be like to be an MP and have a say on important issues.

“It was an incredible experience,” she said.

Dangerous furniture in firing line

The decision to stamp out high fire-risk foam-filled furniture from New Zealand has been welcomed by firefighters.

Manufacturers and retailers must now find ways to make products safer and a Product Safety Policy Statement (PSPS) has been enacted around products that use foam filling.

The filling, typically a polyurethane foam, is essentially plastic, and in some couches can be the

equivalent to a 20-litre container of petrol, fire risk management officer Bevan Findlay said.

“The use of these kinds of materials in home furnishings is one of the main reasons why a fire in a modern home becomes unsurvivable so quickly, the material burns quickly and lets off toxic smoke, which is the same as the black smoke you get from burning plastic,” he said.

“Polyurethane foam furniture is present in nearly every home in New Zealand and, as I understand

it, most furniture will not have any kind of fire retardants in the foam.”

Findlay said because furniture can be so flammable, it is important to remember important fire safety messages.

“It is important to keep it away from sources of heat – always keep furnishings and clothing at least a metre from the heater – and because these materials let off toxic smoke, it’s a good reminder to ensure you have working smoke alarms and an escape plan to make sure you can get out in time

if a fire does happen,” he said.

“A house fire can be fatal in as little as three minutes.”

Findlay said while the focus is now on furniture foam, it is also important to remember that other items in a house, such as carpet, wall coverings, paints, vinyls, clothing and bedding, are all often made of petrochemicals, and are also a fire risk in the home.

Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Kris Faafoi said it was important to make the changes due to the prevalence of the

material throughout New Zealand homes.

“About 80 per cent of new and existing household furniture in New Zealand is foam-filled, including lounge suites, some mattresses, and seats,” he said Coroners reports show that more people die of smoke inhalation than of burns from flames.

From 2006-2016, the total number of deaths during residential structure fires was 177 and from 2012-2017, there were 1227 fire-related injuries.

Inaugural workshop series a hit with families

Inaugural school holiday workshops at the Ashburton Art Gallery have attracted well over 100 participants.

Spokesperson Martine Tait said the gallery decided to introduce the workshops these holidays following a mug decorating activity overflowing with entries last year.

“It was chaos, but it showed there was so much interest in holiday programmes,” she said.

Timing the workshops for the winter holidays worked perfectly, as parents were looking for indoor activities for their children.

There have been five held altogether; Interesting Insects – making three-dimensional insect models from polystyrene and craft materials; Decorative Houses – decorating wooden blocks shaped into houses; Multiple Lines – drawing for up to 16-year-olds; and two on glass jewellery making.

Initially there had been just one glass jewellery workshop, but another was organised when the first filled up quickly.

“The mobile making activity in the foyer has also been a favourite with kids,” Tait said.

She joins Leen Braam and Tony Todd as those who have showed their hand early, although suggestions still point towards one or two more names emerging in the coming weeks.

Favel said that one of the deciding factors in her decision was her pride in what her council has achieved in the past three years and the promise of what lies ahead.

“I am immensely proud of what we, as a council, have achieved and am very excited about what the future holds.

“We’ve made a lot of momentum and, in particular, I was very proud of the improvement in resident satisfaction – that’s runs on the board for us.”

Favel claimed the title of mayor back in 2016 when she won in style beating the then incumbent Angus McKay by a solid margin, 6329 votes to 4971.

That came off the back of the previous election where, when standing as a councillor, she was the highest polling.

Favel confirmed that she would only be standing for mayor and not as a councillor this year.

More councillors to seek re-election

As their incumbent mayor announced her intentions to run for the top job again, the sitting group of Ashburton District councillors are also starting to firm up where they stand heading into the nomination stage of this year’s elections.

Some however, are still uncertain – or aren’t yet quite ready to make their decision public knowledge while one in particular, has changed their mind from what they first stated.

dair Urquhart and Mark Malcolm had confirmed they would not be seeking re-election, but Malcolm confirmed to the Guardian that his plans had changed.

“After a bit of thought and a rethink on a few things, I’ve decided to stand again,” he said.

“I just feel like I still have something to offer around the table and I’m keen to ensure that my area is still represented too.”

Malcolm’s re-commitment means that he joins Stuart Wilson, Diane Rawlinson, Liz McMillan and Leen Braam as confirmed contenders for councillor spots

while Braam was the first cab off the rank to announce he would also be standing for mayor.

That left sitting deputy mayor, Neil Brown, Selwyn Price, Lynette Lovett, Thelma Bell and Russell Ellis as those who had yet to announce their intentions, however two did just that yesterday.

Both Bell and Lovett confirmed that they would be standing again.

Bell said her decision to look to stand again was an easy one, led by public opinion.

“I’ve been really encouraged by the feedback and support I have

had from people in the community,” she said.

“That has led me to make the decision to try and stand again.”

For Lovett, her desire to see through some of the projects currently under way is a key factor in her decision to seek another term.

“We’ve got some very exciting things happening around the district at the moment and having been involved with the process this far I think it would be a shame to walk away now and not help to see those things through,” she said.

Brown said he was still yet to come to a decision and was weighing up his options but hoped to make an announcement in due course.

Like Brown, Russell Ellis was also looking at his options.

“I’d like to think I will be ready to make an announcement next week, but at this stage I’m not ready to publicly commit to a decision either way,” he said.

Price was keeping his cards close to his chest, but did confirm that he expected to make public his decision over the weekend.

Home grown stars share their lives to aid hospice

A top lawyer, a mountain climber and a consumer champion, all with links to Ashburton, are combining on September 7 to help raise funds for Hospice Mid Canterbury.

Queen’s counsel James Rapley, Everest conqueror Mike Read and former Fair Go journalist Anna Thomas will share parts of their exciting lives with a dinner audience at the Hotel Ashburton on September 7.

Tickets went on sale this week and are selling like hotcakes.

Organising committee member Lynnie Scammell said the fundraiser was important for Hospice Mid Canterbury as it helped cover the cost of its free services for the people dealing with a life-limiting illness or end of life.

Living every moment is a key hospice philosophy and the three guest speakers embody that in their remarkable achievements.

Scammell said they hoped to sell at least 200 tickets and half of those had already sold in the past week.

She said the hospice group began offering services in 2015 and receive no government funding. It provides counselling and holistic support for clients and their families, and volunteers who can sit with clients, provide companionship and even write their life stories.

The group also has a collection of books for people to borrow, suitable for different ages, and all dealing with the subject of illness, dying and grief.

Hospice supports those not only suffering from cancer, but also from dementia, motor neurone disease and other illnesses.

Scammell said the group had helped more than 150 families since its inception and currently had 45 clients on its books.

Rush hour traffic was delayed in Wellington yesterday after a car crash closed Mt Victoria tunnel.

There were no injuries when a car crashed into a wall, a police spokeswoman said. It wasn’t clear whether the crash happened in the tunnel or near it, but the tunnel was partially blocked off, causing havoc for evening homeward-bound motorists. The tunnel did re-open later in the evening.

Dunedin armed police Armed police rushed to the student quarter in Dunedin after someone was seen brandishing what appeared to be a gun yesterday afternoon. The person who reported the incident said a person had brandished what appeared to be a gun and asked them whether they though it was real. Top plumber ready to tackle the best

Despite there being certain stigmas around the plumbing trade, Ashburton’s top young plumber, Ryan Jamieson loves his job and is ready to take on the best other young plumbers in the country.

Jamieson won the Ashburton heat of the Plumbing World Young Plumber of the Year competition back in May, and is now preparing for the Canterbury and West Coast final in Christchurch next month, but only fell into the trade by accident while he was at high school.

“I’ve been plumbing for 13 years, started in 2006,” he said.

“I kind of fell into it really, they read out about the job in the morning at school and I went for it, school wasn’t really the thing for me so I left at 16.”

The competition sees plumbers complete a number of plumbing tasks as quickly and as neatly as possible before they also complete a written assessment.

“I’ve gone out on my own (as a plumber) so I’ve done all of the paperwork and the assessments so that written stuff was where I did really well,” he said.

The now 28-year-old operates

his own plumbing business, and is training his first apprentice.

“It is nice to be able to give back,” he said.

“The job does have a negative stigma but it is a great trade and I get a lot of enjoyment out of it.”

Jamieson said attracting new plumbers in the industry was important, with already a nationwide shortage, and an ageing workforce, he says there could be a real drought of plumbers in the future.

“There is plenty of work about,” he said.

“There are a lot of plumbers that are in that 45-50 bracket and older and when they start to move out of the industry there will be a massive shortage.”

Should Jamieson win the Canterbury/West Coast event, he will then go on to compete at the nationals in Auckland.

“There are some fairly decent prizes available, I think there is a trip to China,” he said.

“I think the missus would quite like a trip to China so hopefully I can win.”

The Canterbury final, which is on August 21, is also his birthday, which he says would be a great birthday present if he was to win.

Ex-deputy mayor joins ECan race

Former Selwyn deputy mayor, Sarah Walters, has announced she is standing for one of the two Mid Canterbury seats on the Environment Canterbury Regional Council (ECan) in this year’s local body elections.

Walters was elected as a Selwyn District councillor for three terms, from 2007-2016, and was deputy mayor for two terms from 2010-2016.

In 2016 elections Walters was unsuccessful in her bid for the

mayoralty and spent the next three years on the sidelines of local body politics, but decided she had some unfinished business.

“In a personal capacity I still made submissions on ECan’s long-term plan and public transport strategy which highlighted to me I wasn’t quite ready to let things go just yet,” Walters said.

“I sat on it for a long time on whether to stand or not. Part of me wanted to move on with my life and go and get a real job.

“Another part was asking if I was ready to do that and I felt

that if I didn’t stand for election this year after one term away that would be it.”

When she was tossing up her next move, signing on for a fixed term role that ended in October was the sign that swayed her, and this week Walters announced she would stand for ECan in the Mid Canterbury constituency in what is the regional council’s first full elections since 2007.

Walters joins Allen Lim and John Sunckell as candidates who have announced prior to nominations opening on Friday.

Leita’s incredible Spanish pilgrimage

When some people come to a crossroads in their lives and are not sure which path to take next, it can often be a difficult decision.

But as soon as qualified teacher and marriage celebrant Leita Joy heard of the Camino de Santiago, or Way of St James, in Spain, she knew it was something she had to do.

The trek involves walking a path of more than 800km through the Spanish mountains and countryside, following the path of St James through his life and following his death – he is believed to be buried in Santiago.

Having faced a few life troubles that had affected her ability to work and resulted in the loss of her income, Joy decided it was time for a change, and then

heard from a colleague, while completing her celebrancy diploma, about the trek.

“As soon as she told me about it I knew it was something I had to do, it was like a calling,” she said.

She soon began her training, beginning with the Longbeach Challenge, plus plenty of walking and time spent on the exercycle to help develop muscle.

Joy went overseas for seven weeks and five of those were spent walking the trail, with stages varying from 22km to 25km.

“It was my first time to Europe.

I stopped in Dubai for a few days, then went to the UK, Manchester, London, Paris,” she said.

“I then went to the start point and lost my voice and was told I couldn’t walk for a few days, but I didn’t speak the language anyway.”

Joy said she learned a lot from the trip, especially completing it solo.

“You learn how to live with what little you have, all I had was a 5kg backpack with a spare pair of clothes, a sleeping bag and my toiletries. You really appreciate where home is, it is quite different and it really opened my eyes to other cultures.”

Joy said she would recommend the pilgrimage to those who were interested, but only if they were truly committed.

“I would not go for the hell of it, you need to do your training and your research.

“I chose to go on my own as I would’ve missed so much if I was there with another person.

“I did it for spiritual reasons, some do it for religious reasons, some for the mental and physical challenge.”

Disease experts warn of vulnerability NZME

MP calls for look at genetic technology NZME Green Party co-leader and Climate Change Minister James Shaw says the government needs to take a look at changing New Zealand’s genetic technology laws in the wake of a major report on emissions.

It’s a claim that could put him at odds with his party, which has a history of fiercely opposing genetic modification.

The Government’s Interim Climate Change Committee this week flagged prohibitive New Zealand regulations around genetics as a potential obstruction to lowering emissions on farms.

“New Zealand’s rules on genetic modification could be a barrier to developing lower emissions technologies,” the report said.

It gave the example of a genetically modified rye grass developed by AgResearch that may potentially reduce both methane and nitrous oxide emissions from grazing animals, but that is having to be tested in the United States and would not be able to be used in New Zealand under current laws.

“The science surrounding genetic modification has evolved,” the committee said.

“Other countries have changed their rules in recent years and it is not uncommon for livestock overseas to eat genetically modified feeds.”

Shaw says the Government accepts it has a responsibility to at least look at the laws, given the concerns raised.

“If we are going make progress on this, if they are challenging us and saying that the regularity environment we have actually fails us in terms of producing the climate outcomes that we need,

then we need to take a look at them,” Shaw told NBR. But he said there had been no decisions made and the Government would have to be “incredibly careful” about changes.

“The consumer brand that we have internationally for the provenance of our food, around 100 per cent pure, is incredibly hard won.

“Anything you do that could endanger that could well not be worth any of the benefits, even if this thing is scientifically safe ... The level of public anxiety around things like gene editing and genetically modified organisms is really high.”

That concern was also raised in the commission’s report.

Shaw’s statement could prove contentious within the Green Party, part of whose membership is staunchly against loosening rules around genetic technologies.

Its official policy calls for the prohibition of “genetically modified and transgenic organisms that are intended for release into the environment or food chain”.

Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage has stopped genetic engineering work being conducted as part of the Government’s predator-free programme, saying she didn’t want go down the GE “rabbit hole”.

The Government’s previous chief science advisor, Sir Peter Gluckman, said the legal framework was out of date in 2018 and the Royal Society has been looking at the issue.

Environment Minister David Parker earlier this year said no changes to legislation were being looked at.

The National Party has also called for a public debate.

Infectious disease experts have warned that a generation of New Zealanders are still vulnerable to contracting measles due to a lack of national approach.

Health Ministry documents revealed the Ministry received expert advice in 2017 on the urgent need to get more young people immunised.

The rise in measles cases comes amid increasing concern around the so-called “immunity gap”: the generation of New Zealanders in their teens to mid30s who are more likely than any other age group to not have received a vaccine.

The National Measles Elimination Verification Committee (NVC) met in May 2018, and recommended that “a systematic, programmatic approach” was needed.

But in a statement to RNZ, Doctor Nikki Turner, who chaired the meeting, says the immunity gap “still needs to be addressed”.

Latest figures show that there have been 311 confirmed cases of measles in New Zealand this year, taking it higher than the outbreak in 2014, when 280 cases were confirmed.

Institute for Environmental and Scientific Research public health physician Sarah Jeffries said there were four main areas where the outbreaks were focused, but most cases were coming from the Auckland region.

Some 206 confirmed measles cases were in individuals who had not been immunised.

Measles just a plane ride away Public health clinicians today warned passengers from

University of Auckland senior lecturer Helen Petousis-Harris. two domestic flights in the first weekend of July – flight NZ5119 between Auckland and Palmerston North and flight NZ5114 between Auckland and New Plymouth that they had been exposed to the virus.

Auckland Regional Public Health Service said in the Palmerston North case, a passenger flew while infectious before knowing they had the preventable disease.

Mind the ‘immunity gap’ Recently-revealed documents show the Ministry of Health has been sitting on advice from a group of experts as to how to reduce the immunity gap.

A 2018 meeting of the NVC outlined several measures that could be put in place to help.

Amongst various options, they discussed possible options such as: • Starting an adult vaccination programme • Designing an entirely new IT system

• Need for additional funding to support vaccination strategies • Implementation of border control measures • Use of travel doctors So far this year, babies under 15 months old had the highest number of unvaccinated cases.

Such young babies do not typically receive vaccinations, although the age has recently been lowered to 12 months.

They were followed by the 1019 age group, with 64 confirmed cases. Of those, 42 were confirmed as unvaccinated, another 16 were ‘unknown’ and two more had only had one dose.

Third was 20-29 year-olds with 76 confirmed cases, 37 of whom were confirmed not vaccinated (plus 25 unknown and five with only one dose).

In a statement to RNZ, Director of Public Health Caroline McElnay said the Ministry of Health was reviewing the best approach to ensure the “immunity gap” age group took up the free vaccines.

Dr McElnay said the ministry was working with district health boards and public health units, and had funded a public information campaign including a radio campaign costing $35,659 that specifically promoted immunisation for young adults.

University of Auckland senior lecturer Helen Petousis-Harris, who is director of the Vaccine Datalink and Research Group, said the Ministry of Health needed to act now.

Dr Petousis-Harris said there also needed to be more of a concerted effort to ensure future outbreaks did not occur.

Aust/NZ PMs to talk about deportations NZME The deportation of Kiwis living in Australia and the pathway to Aussie citizenship for New Zealanders living across the Tasman will be areas of focus for Jacinda Ardern’s meeting with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Ardern touched down in Melbourne for a whirlwind two-day trip yesterday.

She will talk with Morrison today but spent yesterday meeting other key Government officials and giving a keynote speech about good governance and the Government’s wellbeing budget.

The meeting with Morrison is not an official bilateral engagement.

Despite the seemingly unofficial nature of the meeting, Ardern still had a range of issues she wanted to discuss.

A major focus of the talks will be the cost of the pathway to citizenship of Kiwis living in Australia.

This has been a topic of contention for years and something the New Zealand Government has been pushing to change.

“I do think we can make it easier for New Zealanders to access [citizenship],” Ardern said. But there were some instances where, despite a person not having a strong connection to New Zealand, they still faced deportation.

Ardern said this was a problem and she would be raising it with Morrison.

Foreign policy issues – including New Zealand’s decision to withdraw its troops from Iraq – would also be discussed, Ardern said.

As would the topic of e-invoicing for companies doing business across the Tasman.

New Zealand and Australia have been trying to sort a system for a while but there have been a few snags.

The Australian election, for example, slowed it down.

Ardern’s meeting with Morri-

son has not always been on the cards.

It was initially meant to be more of a speaking tour in Melbourne but Morrison said he would be able to make it into town to meet with Ardern.

Ardern said she talked more with Morrison than she did with former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. The pair talked on the phone quite regularly, she said.

As for her speaking engagements, Ardern gave away a few hints as to what she would be talking about at a business breakfast today.

She will be speaking to business people, selling New Zealand as a destination for investment and letting them know that the country was “open for business”.

New Zealand was already a significant investment destination of Aussies, she said, and added that she planned to pose the question, “what more can we do to attract you”?

Jason Priestley says BH90210 will pay tribute to Luke Perry in a “tasteful” way.

The late actor played high school kid Dylan McKay on the original version of the hit US teen drama Beverly Hills, 90210, between 1990 and 2000, and Jason has revealed the rebooted series will honour him. Perry tragically died at the age 52, following a stroke in March, and although he wasn’t signed up for BH90210, the cast felt it was only right to mention him. Priestley, 49 is returning alongside the likes of Tori Spelling, Brian Austin Green, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering and Gabrielle Carteris.

Arsonist sets building alight AP A man screaming “You die!” burst into an animation production studio in Kyoto and set it on fire early Thursday, killing one person, leaving 12 others presumed dead and a dozen possibly trapped inside.

The blaze injured another 36 people, some of them critically, Japanese authorities said.

The fire broke out in the three-storey Kyoto Animation building in Japan’s ancient capital of Kyoto, after the suspect sprayed an unidentified liquid to accelerate the blaze, Kyoto prefectural police and

fire department officials said.

One person died of severe burns, said fire department official Satoshi Fujiwara. Most of the 10 seriously injured had burns. Rescuers found 12 people presumed dead on the first and second floors, Fujiwara said.

As many as 18 others could be still trapped on the third floor, he said.

The suspect was also injured and taken to a hospital, officials said. Police are investigating the man on suspicion of arson.

Survivors who saw the attacker said he was not their

colleague and that he was screaming “(You) die!” when he dumped the liquid and started the fire, according to Japanese media reports.

“There was an explosion, then I heard people shouting, some asking for help,” a female witness told TBS TV. “Black smoke was rising from windows on upper floors, then there was a man struggling to crawl out of the window.”

Witnesses in the neighbourhood said they heard bangs coming from the building, others said they saw people coming out blackened, bleeding, walking barefoot, Kyodo

News reported.

Rescue officials set up an orange tent outside the studio building to provide first aid and sort out the injured.

Fire department officials said more than 70 people were in the building at the time of the fire and many of them ran outside.

Kyoto Animation, better known as KyoAni, was founded in 1981 as an animation and comic book production studio, and is known for mega-hit stories featuring high school girls, including Lucky Star, K-On! and Haruhi Suzumiya.

Rescuers find 14 bodies after building collapse AP Rescuers found 14 bodies and pulled out 11 survivors as they began winding down operations at the site of a dilapidated building that collapsed in India’s financial capital of Mumbai, an official said yesterday.

Bijendra Dahiya, a National Disaster Response Force official, said workers were still looking for two to three people feared trapped in the rubble.

Dozens of rescuers worked overnight at the site where the four-storey building collapsed on Wednesday, fire official Ashok Talpade said. The survivors included a child who was treated at a hospital and allowed to go home. Others remain hospitalised, Talpade said.

A 16-year-old girl trapped

under a heavy door was taken out by rescuers who cut through iron beams and cleared debris using hydraulic cutters.

Dahiya said it had taken more than 24 hours to clear most of debris as the lane where the collapse occurred was too narrow for rescue vehicles. Most of the equipment was carried by hand and people also formed a human chain to remove debris.

Maharashtra state’s top elected official, Devendra Fadanavis, said the building was nearly 100 years old and 15 families were living there.

Talpade said the families had stayed after being asked to leave. Waris Pathan, an opposition lawmaker, said the building was a death trap, with authorities saying they had no money to rebuild the structure.

Let the election games officially begin T

here’s every indication that this year’s local body elections could be one of the most interesting in the history of the Ashburton District Council.

The council, formed in 1989 through the merger of the Ashburton Borough and County Councils, has traditionally been marked by elections that have often been begging for candidates.

On occasion there have been wards where no elections have been held and times when a mayor has been returned unopposed.

That’s clearly not going to happen this time round with the mayoralty.

We have three hats confirmed in the ring so far, add to that at least a couple more who are

tipped to be likely contenders, and it will be game-on in the lead-up to the October 12 election day.

Some will say the more the merrier, while others might take the slightly more cautious approach and look upon too many potential candidates as being a bad thing.

A popularity vote is almost a taboo subject in an election but,

there’s no hiding from the fact that, if there’s a multitude of contenders then the more popular a candidate is across the district, then the better chance they stand of getting across the finishing line.

To put it into numbers, if five candidates happen to seek the top job you’d expect that they could probably all but guarantee themselves at least 15 per cent of the vote.

Some might get a little more, some might get a little less. But that’s a rough estimate of how it could pan out. That would leave just 25 per cent to play with and there’s a strong possibility that one or two individuals standing within the district would see their votes creep up above the 20

So, the battle to the finish line could be a brutal one.

Sitting back and watching an election unfold can be an interesting, and entertaining, exercise.

What comes out of the woodwork in terms of both people and subjects can be gripping, with particular attention given to what potential candidates choose to hang their hat on, in terms of drumming up public support to take to the polls.

As a district though, it’s important that we get a better turn-out than the just over 50 per cent of the last local body election.

It was brought to my attention

yesterday that we, as a newspaper, are the leaders in the public’s criticism of what happens within the council walls. We see it as our duty to report and discuss the matters that are of great importance to the community and will report without fear or favour when required.

However, we are human, we do possess some levels of compassion and understand that there are times when this community can take their comments and opinions a little too far.

But what is often most concerning is that those who are the most vocal are often those who don’t actually get behind an election. enrol and vote.

That should be something we all try and change this year.

A need for therapy I

sit at the keyboard hoping that the writing of this column has therapeutic effects on me.

I am struggling to get over the Black Caps loss to England in the World Cup final.

Even typing the word ‘loss’ cuts me inside a little bit.

I want to start with this. In my mind, here’s the first rule change that should be added to the list after that game.

The Kiwis battled their way to 241 for 8 and the English replied with 241 all out.

Surely a side that lost more wickets should finish second!

Overthrowgate According to law 19.8 – Overthrow or wilful act of fielder – of One Day International Cricket rules on the ICC’s website we won by one run – “If the boundary results from an overthrow or from the wilful act of a fielder, the runs scored shall be any runs for penalties awarded to either side, and the allowance for the boundary, and the runs completed by the batsmen, together with the run in progress if they had already crossed at the instant of the throw or act”.

Stokes and his partner Abdul Rashid had not crossed over for the second run when the throw was released, nor had he reached the crease at the striker’s end when the ball deflected off his bat, meaning that according to the law, England should have been awarded five runs, not six.

Simon Taufel has confirmed that England should only have been awarded five runs – not six – off the third-last ball of their innings in the World Cup final, but the International Cricket Council is leaving matters as they finished on the pitch.

The question I have is, why didn’t the umpire Kumar Dharmasena go upstairs and check how many runs should have been awarded?

He would have known how crucial the moment was.

It was a moment I went from “We can’t lose this” to “Bugger”.

And then, just to rub salt into the wound a bit more, as if Stokes being Kiwi born and winning the game for the poms wasn’t bad enough, I read that Stokes said to the umpire not to award the overthrow runs.

“We don’t want them,” he said, according to his test match team-mate Jimmy Anderson. Arrrrgh!

I do feel better!

My piqued is being replaced with pride. I am very proud of the team, but more proud of the skipper.

Kane Williamson has handled the whole thing amazingly well.

Look out in four years’ time, when Captain Kane will have cemented himself as New Zealand’s best player of all time and with karma on his side will lead us to glory.

Hart’s wealth up by another $1b NZME New Zealand’s richest man Graeme Hart has added another $1 billion to his fortune, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index.

French businessman and chief executive of luxury goods company LVMH Moët Hennessy – Louis Vuitton, Bernard Arnault, has surpassed Microsoft’s Bill Gates to gain the title of the world’s second richest man in the latest index.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos remains the world’s richest man with a total net worth of $US125 billion ($NZ185b), followed by Arnault with a net worth of $108b ($160b) and Gates with a $107b ($158) fortune.

Gates has never been ranked below the second spot on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. His philanthropic endeavours was the biggest reason for his slip in rankings.

According to Bloomberg, the trio’s collective wealth exceeds the individual market values of almost every company in the S&P 500 index.

richest man, added more than $1.1 billion to his fortune in the year to date – he is now worth $6.98b ($10.3b).

The owner of Auckland-based private equity firm Rank Group is ranked as the 237th richest man in the world, according to the index which is updated daily.

Rank Group’s three main divisions are Reynolds Group, which owns food packaging and consumer products businesses, building materials supplier Carter Holt Harvey and vehicle parts business Automotive Group.

Hart is sandwiched between controversial billionaire, George Soros, a hedge fund tycoon known as the “man who broke the Bank of England’’ and fashion designer Giorgio Armani in 238th place.

Hart is ranked three spots ahead of luxury fashion powerhouse Ralph Lauren who has a net worth of $6.9b ($10.2b).

He is the only New Zealander to appear on Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index.

t was a mixed, yet quiet, week for the local market, with many market participants on leave for the second week of the school holidays.

The tone was similar offshore as global investors awaited US quarterly earnings reports and worries over trade and slowing growth continued to drag on sentiment.

The NZ dollar rose against the US dollar after inflation data met expectations. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand aims to keep annual inflation between 1-3 per cent over the medium term, with a focus on the mid-point of 2 per cent.

The Consumers Price Index (CPI), which is the most commonly used measure for household inflation, increased 0.6 per cent for the June quarter and 1.7 per cent for the year ended June.

Inflation has remained stubbornly weak, and the June quarter result marks the ninth consecutive quarter it has been below the midpoint.

Petrol prices largely attributed to the rise, increasing 5.8 per cent in the quarter, bouncing back from a 7.0 per cent drop in the first quarter. Rents were also higher, up 1.0 per cent in the June quarter and 2.5 per cent on the year.

Dairy product prices unexpectedly gained 2.7 per cent at the latest Global Dairy Trade auction after four consecutive declines.

Milk powder prices strengthened in response to stronger demand from Southeast Asian countries and the Middle East.

ra’s farmgate milk price, jumped 3.6 per cent, skim milk powder increased 3.8 per cent and butter rose 1.7 per cent.

Across the Tasman, the ASX fell slightly on Tuesday after minutes from the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) monetary policy meeting dampened the market’s expectations of further interest rate cuts. The RBA’s board said it will continue to monitor the job market closely “and adjust monetary policy, if needed, to support sustainable growth in the economy.”

The RBA cut its Official Cash Rate (OCR) in June and July, marking the first back-to-back reduction since 2012. Australia’s OCR stands at a record low 1.0 per cent.

The key piece of corporate news this week related to AMP’s planned sale of its Australian and New Zealand life insurance business. On Monday, the embattled AMP announced that Reserve Bank of New Zealand requirements now mean the sale is unlikely to proceed.

In light of this, AMP stated it will not pay an interim dividend and announced a $A700m write-down of the business. The company’s ability to lay out a refreshed strategy, which would require sizeable investment, is

also now in doubt. Shares in AMP closed down 16 per cent on the day.

Trade tensions were back in the spotlight this week after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on another $US325bn worth of Chinese goods, saying the US still has a long way to go to conclude a trade deal with China. According to reports, progress on a trade deal with China has stalled due to restrictions on Huawei.

The Trump administration hasn’t reached consensus on which semiconductor chips and other products can be provided to Huawei, without triggering security concerns or giving the company a strategic edge.

The global quarterly reporting season kicked off this week, and results were mixed. Netflix’s video streaming service suffered a dramatic downturn in growth in the June quarter, sending its shares down more than 10 per cent.

Netflix’s subscriber numbers were weaker than expected with the company, adding just 2.7 million global paid subscribers in the quarter, compared with market estimates of 5 million.

The company now expects to add 7 million subscribers globally in the current quarter, compared with market estimates of 6.5 million. Netflix shares have surged 35 per cent this year.

Owning your own home, mortgage free by the time you retire is probably the minimum prerequisite for anyone who wants to live comfortably in their golden years. So, what I’m about to suggest may come as a shock to you Paying off the principal on your loan, over the lifetime of the loan, isn’t necessarily the best way to pay off your mortgage by retirement.

Surely such a statement is sacrilege?

For as long as I can remember, the importance of paying off the mortgage before we retire has been drummed into us, as a mantra. But my suggestion isn’t challenging that idea – just the way in which we achieve it.

Consider the way that a mortgage usually works. You borrow a sum from the bank, which is secured against your home, then, over the lifetime of the mortgage you repay the original sum borrowed and also pay interest on that sum. In most cases that mortgage will be structured as something called a “table mortgage”, which simply means that the bank factors in the reducing cost of interest as you pay off more principal and calculates it as one consistent payment, per month, throughout the life of your mortgage.

But what if you didn’t repay the original loan, only the interest? How could this work? Well it all comes down to capital growth and the history of cycles in the New Zealand property market.

Consider this: when my mum and dad built their own home in Napier in 1970 it cost them $30,000. They didn’t actually need all of that as they paid a deposit of $4000 toward the home, but for the purposes of this exercise let’s assume that they borrowed the whole sum and that the house was worth the same amount: $30,000.

In 1980, 10 years later, their home was worth pretty much what they paid for

it in 1970, but in each of the following four decades the house more than doubled in value and is currently worth around $525,000. Mum sold that house a few years ago but these numbers mean that, instead of struggling away to pay off the principal back in the ’70s and ’80s (a lot of money at the time), she could have simply paid off the original $30,000 loan sum from the proceeds when she sold the house.

The story gets even more compelling for property investors. If you purchase three or more properties over your lifetime and hang on to them, then chances are that the resale of one will pay off the mortgage on the others, even if you only ever pay interest on the loans against all three.

The longer you own property the more this strategy works in your favour, and the reality is that most

people probably wouldn’t wait until retirement until making that final lump sum payment. As in my mum’s case, the original mortgage sum had become so small that she could probably have repaid it earlier if she had chosen to do so.

This strategy isn’t for everyone, of course. For starters, it requires a belief in the concept of “property cycles” and a degree of confidence that these will continue into the future. For others, the change in mindset from “paying off the mortgage” to “paying only the interest” is simply too much to get our head around and seems more like wizardry than economics.

Some will also point out that you would actually end up paying more, in nominal terms, if you only paid interest and repaid the original sum borrowed, as a lump sum at the end of the same period you’d have paid off a traditional mortgage. This is true. The $30,000

my mum and dad borrowed would have cost them around $58,000 over 30 years at 5 per cent - but $75,000 if they only paid interest throughout the life of the loan and repaid the principal at the end. But this is overwhelmingly offset by the effect of inflation and in real terms they’d have ended up paying dramatically less.

Of course, it isn’t a given that a bank would allow you go interest only for a prolonged period, if at all. Generally, bank policy is to only allow mortgages to be interest only for up to five years – and some banks will allow interest only for investors but frown upon it as a strategy for owner occupiers.

For all of these reasons going interest-only isn’t right for everyone, but for those keen to save some money, or to divert it to other purposes, it’s well worth a second look.

What is the worst thing about moving?

It’s a tough call. Purging is stressful, packing is physically draining, moving your belongings is exhausting, and unpacking can be arduous — especially after all you’ve accomplished to just get to that point. Here are some tips to help simplify the process.

Review measurements Whether you’re buying or renting, make sure you have accurate measurements of all the rooms and storage areas in your house. If you don’t have a floor plan with measurements, measure before you move.

Think through where it makes most sense to place everything, whether it’s furniture or lightbulbs.

If you don’t do any planning, items will either be stashed in the nearest cabinet or closet in a rush to empty moving boxes, or they’ll be unpacked but not put away — creating clutter in your new home.

If you have a clear idea of where everything will go, there will be fewer decisions to make on moving day and less rearranging required in the weeks and months that follow.

Prep storage spaces If there are any closets or other storage spaces that need painting, do

that before you move in. You won’t want to do it after you’re settled. To expedite unpacking in the kitchen, install drawer and cabinet liners to protect surfaces before your move. This is a lot easier to do before you begin to unpack.

If you’re absolutely certain where items such as silverware, spices and food will be stored, you can buy drawer dividers, a spice rack and pantry bins, but these can also be easily installed after the move.

However, if you’re planning to use industrial shelving in an unfinished basement or garage, it is helpful to have those shelves built, and in place, before your move.

Having surfaces ready to hold bins and boxes will make it easier to get everything off the floor, giving you space to move.

Label the right way Label boxes according to the rooms where they will be unpacked at the new house, instead of the location where the contents were stored in your previous home. Label the boxes both to indicate what is inside and where it will go.

I realise this sounds elemental, but it is common for boxes to be labelled vaguely, with only the destination specified, and then no one can find a plate or a glass among the 30 boxes

labelled “kitchen”. Place a box cutter in each room so that you’re not searching for the one or two pairs of scissors floating around the house. Put one or two empty boxes in each room to hold packing paper and bubble wrap as you unpack. Break down the other boxes as you empty them.

Only take what you want Make arrangements to get rid of unwanted furniture and other household items well in advance of your move. It’s a waste of time and money to have movers haul items you ultimately don’t need or want.

Even as you’re feeling overwhelmed by the multitude of decisions that moving requires, take some time to choose what will go with you and what you can part with ahead of time.

Donation pickups, especially for bulky pieces of furniture, usually need to be made a few weeks in advance, so put this at the top of your to-do list after you’ve signed a contract on a new home.

Create a schedule Create a plan for unpacking. It will be tiring work and will probably take longer than you think — at the very least a few days and probably a few weeks. Prioritise unpacking the most important items. Boxes for the kitchen, the bathrooms and linens for each

Mario’s Lambo for sale

M

ario Andretti is one of the true greats of American motorsport.

A Formula 1 world title in 1978, a class win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and victories at the Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500 underline a career that many could only dream of.

And, with such a career it’s only natural that his cars off the track would be suitably exotic.

In particular, Andretti has a known penchant for the raging bull.

The 79-year-old owns a bunch of Lamborghinis, but it’s this 1984 Countach that’s of particular interest.

Yes ... it’s currently for sale.

The sharp, angular, red door stop is a 5000 S variant.

This means that under that rear hatch is a 5.0-litre V12 engine making 277kW (well, it made that when new at least) and linked to a 5-speed stick.

The red exterior is paired with a vintage tan interior, revealed through the Countach’s pair of now iconic scissor doors.

Just 321 5000 Ss were ever built.

What makes Andretti’s Countach particularly unique are the minor details.

The smart looking pin-striping is underlined by Andretti’s logo, which also features on the black wing mirrors.

Given its history, condition, and the fact that there’s just 17,715km on the odometer, it’s no surprise that a reasonable sum of money is being asked for on the Countach.

“When Mario wasn’t travelling the world collecting championships, he was known for terrorising his small Pennsylvania town in one of his Lamborghinis.

Mario reportedly has owned a 1989 Anniversary Countach, a 1991 Diablo, a Murcielago, an Aventador, and our 1984 Countach 5000S,” says the auction house.

“Cosmetically the car looks sharp.

“It sports the original red paint high-

lighted with a pinstripe incorporating Mario Andretti’s logo.

“The exterior rear view mirrors are also embellished with an Andretti logo.

“The interior is original, complete, and in top condition.

“This car was recently the subject of a major mechanical refurbishment.

“The engine was pulled and treated to a complete overhaul to new car specs.

Six of the best F

ive of the rarest and most astonishing Aston Martins ever built have now been confirmed for Concours of Elegance 2019.

From the track-focused 1932 Le Mans Lightweight LM9 to the 1985 V8 Vantage that formed the template for the fabled X-Pack Vantages, these six cars are the very pinnacle of Aston Martin innovation, design and performance.

Now almost 90 years old, the 1932 Aston Martin Le Mans Lightweight LM9 was created specifically to race at the Le Mans 24 Hours race that year, in conjunction with its sister car LM10.

LM9 was fitted with a number of Electron parts, a magnesium and aluminium alloy, to help reduce weight over previous Aston Martin racers, and had a pointed tail and low radiator design to help with aerodynamics.

The 1.5-litre car’s first outing was at Le Mans, during 1932 but it didn’t prove successful.

But LM9 returned to Le Mans the following year, with more success. In fact, LM9 finished the Le Mans 24 Hours fifth overall, and first

in class. At the more modern end of the Aston line-up, Concours will be displaying a V8 Vantage model with a significant history. The very car on display at Hampton Court Palace is the genesis of the fabled X-Pack V8 Vantage models, of which only 131 were built.

This V8 Vantage started life as a standard car, but was later returned to Aston Martin Works so they could begin developing a new, more powerful and better handling version to best the Ferrari 288 GTO and Lamborghini Countach QV 5000.

No line up of Aston Martins would be complete without key DB models; and Concours of Elegance will start with one of the earliest, the DB2/4 Mark II Saloon.

Two examples of arguably the most famous Aston Martin in history will also be on display in the main line-up; the DB5 and DB5 Convertible.

Made famous by a certain secret agent, the DB5 catapulted Aston Martin into popular culture.

The Aston Martins in the display will be joined by a special world-first Aston Martin Zagato feature as part of Zagato’s Centenary celebrations.

The American Dream Bernard Egan MOTORING

T

he daily Test Yourself column in this newspaper is both popular and challenging.

Because of their variation the eight questions with multi choice answers are always interesting.

A recent question – the length of the longest car in the world – no doubt fascinated many readers, especially so members of our motoring team.

The answer is a stunning 30.5 metres.

But the question and the answer left us wondering what the car is. and what on earth would a car of that size look like.

The car is called The American Dream.

The massive limousine, which was built

by California custom car guru Jay Ohrberg, became certified as the longest car in the world by Guinness World Records in the mid-1990s.

It sports 26 wheels, a Jacuzzi, diving board, king-sized water bed, and even a helicopter landing pad.

When asked why he designed and built such a massive car the constructor re-

sponded by saying, why not?

The American Dream began life in the late 1980s at Ohrberg’s Hollywood Cars shop.

Ohrberg selected a golden 1970s Cadillac Eldorado as a starting point.

Twenty six wheels later, The American Dream was complete, featuring along with the other features a small lace and candelabra-festooned living room and two separate driver’s cabins.

The limousine could be driven in its straight state, or reset to bend in the middle.

The separate driver’s cabin was rather necessary in order to negotiate any turn,

and the ‘backseat driver’ would steer the rear axles.

Intended mainly as a movie car and display vehicle, it was not road legal.

Period photos show The American Dream was detachable in the midsection and could be trailered on flatbed trucks from location to location.

But its ‘longest car in the world’ claim to fame almost didn’t save it from an untimely demise.

The American Dream was leased to a company which used it as a promotional vehicle, and upon the end of the lease, its caretakers abandoned it in a New Jersey warehouse.

World loses a motoring icon

T

he name of an American gentleman who died on July 2 this year aged 94 has left an indelible mark in the annals of motoring history.

And elsewhere too.

The son of Italian immigrant parents Lido Anthony – Lee – Iacocca helped create the Ford Mustang and then rescued Chrysler Corporation.

His stellar career at Ford ended abruptly, but not before he followed his gut instinct, which saw the iconic Mustang introduced to a motoring public who he knew were well and truly ready for it.

Later it was suggested the “customer surveys” which confirmed the public couldn’t wait for an exciting new sports car and which he used to convince his board of directors may have been somewhat imaginary, but it didn’t matter a jot, because Lee Iacocca was right.

Iacocca’s dream of an affordable muscle car quickly became a reality, and that reality grew into a bigger phenomenon than he or anyone else at Ford ever imagined.

The introduction of the Mustang and some other models, including the Pinto, came exactly when Ford needed a boost following the disastrous (although ironically now collectable) Edsel.

The Ford Pinto, an economy car that became notorious for exploding fuel tanks, was one of Iacocca’s duds.

“You don’t win ’em all,” he said of the Pinto.

Iacocca’s relationship with the Mustang was cemented when Time and Newsweek featured him on their covers in April 1964.

By 2013, about nine million Mustangs had been sold.

After the acrimonious split from Ford, Lee Iacocca was invited by Chrysler to help save them from bankruptcy, which he did.

In 2012 it emerged at a salvage auction needing major repairs – damage to the body, tears in the roof, broken windows, and a rusty Jacuzzi – it didn’t look promising.

However, the story has taken a positive turn.

In 2014, New York’s Autoseum Automotive Teaching Museum announced that The American Dream limousine had been acquired and will now be used to help teach students to fix, build and fabricate cars.

Given its sheer size though, this restoration project may take some time.

But The American Dream will live on.

Mini Van. Following involvement in the motor industry Lee Iacocca went on to become a world-renowned public and motivational speaker, author and philanthropist, famous for many quotes including “we are all living a once in a life time opportunity”.

He was involved with other businesses, including the Olivia Olive Oil brand.

Iacocca often spoke of his immigrant roots and how America rewarded hard work.

When he was tapped by President Ronald Reagan in 1982 to be chairman of a cam-

paign to restore the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, he said he accepted the job as a way of honouring his parents.

The campaign raised more than $350m, more than double the initial $150m goal.

Somewhat ironically, the man who recognised the motoring public’s appetite for the powerful and iconic Mustang in later years recognised the need to develop electric vehicles.

Lee Iacocca was a man and kept up with the times in which he lived and will forever have the respect and appreciation of many, especially Mustang enthusiasts.

This happened recently when this writer accompanied Roger Hart when he test drove a new Mazda MX5.

Apart from saying it was a comfortable ride I’ll leave a description of this great sports car and the technical stuff to Roger.

But what I do want to share is everything about the outing was perfect, including a brilliant mid-winter day which meant we could drive the wonderful roads up to and along our spectacular foothills with the top down.

A great reminder of superb local scenery.

Added to that some tasty treats were sampled along the way.

And of course from my point of view great company.

Hopefully Roger would agree!

■■ Preheat the oven to 150°C. ■■ Lamb: Season the lamb with a little salt and pepper. Place the flour in a bag with the chops and toss to coat. Heat the butter over a high heat in a large ovenproof saucepan (or a regular pan then transfer to a casserole

dish later). Sear the chops a few at a time to brown them on both sides. Set the chops aside.

■■ Add the tomato paste to the pan and cook for a few minutes on a high heat. Add the wine, if using and let it bubble up for 30 seconds.

■■ Add the stock, thyme, rosemary stick, bay leaves, garlic and the tomatoes. Transfer to an ovenproof dish, cover and cook in the oven for 2 1/2 hours (or transfer to a slow cooker and cook on low for 6-8 hours).

■■ Vegetables: Steam the vegetables until tender. Add a little oil, salt and pepper then toss to coat.

■■ To serve: Serve the lamb stew in large bowls, topped with freshly-steamed vegetables.

Triple threat for Sharrock NZ Racing Desk New Plymouth trainer Allan Sharrock will have a strong hand at his local meeting on Saturday, led by a trio of fillies in the Seaton Park 3YO (1400m).

Sharrock will line up juvenile stakes winner London Express, and promising gallopers Akerra and Penelope Cruise in the three-year-old contest.

Akerra is proving an exciting prospect, having won on debut at Awapuni in May and stormed home late to finish runner-up over 1200m at the same track earlier this month, beating stablemate London Express into third.

Sharrock has been pleased with her progress since then and he believes her wide barrier of seven will be ideal on the Heavy11 track.

“She has worked really well in blinkers and she will run out a strong 1400m,” he said.

“She has done everything terrific since her last start, I am really happy with her.

“I have never seen it wetter here, so the wider out you are the better you will be.

“She is a nicely bred filly, she is bred on the same cross as Shez Sinsational. I think she is going to be a filly that goes up a level.”

While Sharrock is expecting a strong showing from Akerra, he believes Ocean Park filly Penelope Cruise is the one to watch heading into the race.

“She is a very good filly,” he said. “She is crying out for 1400m. I ran her over 1200m to fitten her up for this race (last start when finishing fourth) and she hit the line really strongly.”

Sharrock’s other runner in the race is stakes winner London Express, however, the daughter of Shamexpress is a dual acceptor and could potentially start in the Revital Fertilisers 1400.

“I haven’t made a decision on her as to whether she runs in the three-year-old or the other field, which lacks a bit of depth,” he said.

“I am still leaning towards the three-year-old race, at this stage, because they are all babies.”

While beaten into third by stablemate Akerra last start, Sharrock wasn’t disappointed with London Express’ run and thinks she has taken a lot of improvement from it.

“She is probably the one who has progressed more out of her last start than Akerra,” he said.

“She hadn’t raced for a while, so I expect her to be at concert pitch on Saturday.

“I thought she would win (last start), but it didn’t disappoint me. She over-raced, they dropped anchor in front and she got pulling at the back.

“She then had to work around the field, she looked beaten on the corner, but she has only been beaten 0.9 (lengths) and was probably doing her best work at the finish as well.

Sharrock will also have a number of other chances at his home meeting on Saturday, with Mars Bars, Come Sei, Foiling and Beckidboo all pleasing him in the lead-up to Saturday.

“Mars Bars ran second to John Bell’s Guillotine horse (Helena Baby) last start. That should be good form for a (rating) 72.

“Foiling is dropping back from (rating) 72 to 65 and the last two runs have been quite good, even her sixth last start, she made a lot of ground, so 1800m should be better than a mile for her.

“All-in-all, on paper, it looks like I’ll have a good day.”

Ill-fated Atlante records his first winner NZ Racing Desk The ill-fated Atlante sired his first winner at Hastings on Thursday when Callsign Mav took out the NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race (800m).

“It was good to get it done, he is still quite green. Once he changed legs with 100m to go he did it nicely,” trainer John Bary said.

Bary, who has fashioned a strong record with juveniles this season, was pleased with his two-year-old heading into the race after a couple of nice jumpout performances.

“He just needs another couple of runs to get some ringcraft before he steps up with the big boys.”

The Group One-winning son of Fastnet Rock stood at Mapperley Stud, near Matamata, for two seasons before his untimely death and his oldest crop are rising three-year-olds.

Cambridge trainer Chris Wood has four runners engaged at the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting at Te Rapa on Saturday, headlined by nine-time race winner Parcorus.

The seven-year-old gelding has been disappointing in three runs this preparation, but Wood is hoping some alternative therapy might be able to get him back on track.

“He hasn’t really fired this time in to be honest,” Wood said. “But I’ve had a little bit of acupuncture work done on him this week and he just had a few little niggles so hopefully that helps things.

“I am happy with him condition wise, his fitness should be good, and he has won races at Te Rapa before so hopefully he can put his best foot forward on Saturday.

“I haven’t done acupuncture before, but I’ve just found a new lady around Cambridge who is very good, and she treated quite a few of mine on Tuesday, so we will see what happens.”

The son of Tavistock is the top-rated horse in the BGP Battlers Cup (2200m), but he will receive weight relief with two kilogram claimer Darren Danis booked for the ride.

Another runner to have received acupuncture treatment this week is last start winner Wooden Edge who contests the Staphanos @ Novara Park (1600m).

“He shouldn’t be too far away again on Saturday,” Wood said.

“He’s come through that last run well and he’s just continued with a little bit of schooling to keep him up to the mark, so hopefully he puts his best foot forward.

“It was good to see him return to form last start and show well and truly what he’s capable of.”

Wood will also be represented

by Mr Incredibull in the Signature Homes (1400m), an impressive maiden winner at Waipa last month, but he could only muster a seventh at Te Aroha last start on the heavy11 surface.

“He didn’t go so good last start,” Wood said. “He got down on the inside in the worst of the ground and he didn’t really cope with it, so Te Rapa should be a little bit looser on Saturday and he should be able to handle that alright.”

Wood’s final runner on Saturday, three-year-old Voltaire Secret, is making his race debut after seven trials.

“He’s stumped me a little bit because he’s been slow to mature,” Wood said.

“He will have his first start with blinkers and a tongue tie on, which are things I think he needs.

“But he’s worked up nicely and I know he’ll handle the wet track.”

Having another go at table tennis Robbie Bennett was one of many who took part in the first Table Tennis Have-A-Go day late last month.

More than 70 people turned up to the first ever open day and it proved so successful that the team at EA Networks Centre have decided to bring the event back again this weekend.

Ashburton District Council service delivery group manager, Neil McCann said after the first event, they couldn’t have been happier with how things went.

“We had a really good mix of people come along, with varying ages and experience levels at playing the sport, which was great,” he said.

This weekend’s event will be held at the EA Networks Centre on Sunday, July 21 between 1pm and 3pm and the call is out for the public, of all ages, to come along and have a go.

Five rookies named in first test

The All Blacks’ first test of 2019 is shaping up to be more of a fact-finding mission.

While a win against Argentina in the opening game of the Rugby Championship is the goal, seeing how a group without Kieran Read, Sam Whitelock, Owen Franks, Joe Moody and Ryan Crotty goes is far more valuable to the selectors in World Cup year.

Not that the side is devoid of experience by any stretch, with all the key areas well covered in terms of leadership.

Dane Coles and Brodie Retallick will command the tight five, captain Sam Cane leads the loose trio, the first choice pairing of Aaron Smith and Beauden Barrett will run the cutter while vice-captain Ben Smith will oversee all from fullback.

Sam Cane is to lead ‘a fact-finding mission’ against Argentina. and give potential test debuts to Atu Moli, Luke Jacobson, Josh Ioane and Braydon Ennor, who have all been named on the pine.

Rieko Ioane is the most notable omission from the test squad, however, Hansen points to the Blues wing as an example of the selectors’ thinking.

“When you look at Rieko not playing, it’s a reflection of the fact that we already know that

he’s a very, very good test player,” Hansen said.

“We need to find out about Sevu and some of those other selections we’ve made.”

With the World Cup looming large, Ofa Tuungafasi and Vaea Fifita have been given the biggest chances to increase their stocks.

Tuungafasi will start at loosehead prop as he looks to solidify his standing as the best dual-sided

front row option while Fifita gets first crack at the up-for-grabs position of blindside flanker.

Hansen says the type of game Fifita played against Italy in Rome late in 2018 is what they want from their No 6.

“He was physical, he was good in the set pieces, he carried well and cleaned out well too.

“It’s one thing to be a talented athlete, but it’s another thing to be a talented athlete with a work ethic. He showed us that against Italy and we’d like to see that again.”

However, all the talk of finding out more doesn’t disguise the fact that the bench is vastly inexperienced. Of the eight reserves, tighthead prop Nepo Laulala has the most test caps with just 17, yet that figure is double the number held by the other seven players combined.

Photo sessions aside, Jacobson, Josh Ioane and Ennor have yet to wear the All Black jersey, while Moli played the last 15 minutes of a rare midweek fixture against

a French XV in 2017 which did not have test match status.

Brad Weber has played test rugby, but only a dozen or so minutes worth against Samoa four years ago. “[There are] not all lot of caps there but there’s a lot of talent,” Hansen said of the bench.

Ready for the battle ahead

It’s been the same for more than two decades, so Simon Fleetwood isn’t expecting his pre-match routine to change ahead of Saturday’s Watters Cup final.

Warm up. Stretch. Dry retch. Go. The elder statesman of Methven rugby will play a role off the bench for his side when they tackle Rakaia at the Ashburton Showgrounds tomorrow and the experienced front-rower won’t have to delve too far into the memory bank to find a bit of inspiration heading into the weekend.

Four years might seem like a while, but the demons from 2015 still haunt him from his time at the helm of the proud country rugby club.

He was captain that year when Methven lifted the Combined Country Rugby title, which means he was also captain when they blew a halftime lead in the Watters Cup a month or so later, coincidentally also against Rakaia.

And it’s a scar that’s probably never fully healed.

“That year provided some of my proudest moments, leading the side to win the Combined Competition was huge,” he said this week.

“But that Watters Cup final was a really disappointing way to end the year, so it’s nice to get a shot at redemption again because it’s felt like a long time.”

After their emphatic victory in grabbing Canterbury Country’s biggest rugby prize, Methven underwent a transformation with a huge portion of their squad hanging up the boots or moving on.

But Fleetwood was one who stuck with the ship and despite the bumps in the road that followed that year with some pretty frustrating results, he’s now enjoying being a part of the second-coming of the side who have nurtured and developed a strong squad.

“I can’t remember a Methven side that has seemed as dedicated to the task as what this group does at the moment – what was a core group of maybe four or five players has now become more than a dozen over the past couple of years and we’ve managed to introduce some real talent to the mix along the way.

“

“And it’s great that the rewards are coming, we’ve played some really good rugby this season, the focus was on being consistent and particularly in the second half of the season I think we’ve achieved that.”

Fleetwood wears his heart on his sleeve when it comes to his rugby and he’s as passionate a player as you’d find anywhere across New Zealand. With 100 games for his former club, Oxford, under his belt he also brought up that magical milestone with Methven during this season.

And while his role this season has been more limited to coming off the bench and adding a bit of experience and knowledge

“I wouldn’t be playing if that passion wasn’t there, I still love getting out there and being part of the team environment and just hope that I’m able to contribute.

“This year I feel like I’ve been able to make a difference when I’ve come on. Instead of just coming in and filling the void it’s nice to think you can make a bit of a difference when you get out there.”

Fleetwood is one of only four players who have taken to the paddock this season who were there back in 2012 when Methven last won the Watters Cup. Aofia Fagalima, Chris Lock and Tim Lawn were all part of that squad that year and have played in 2019.

A default in the final week of the round robin stage of the Watters Cup has meant that Methven hasn’t played a game of rugby since they came from behind to beat Rakaia three weeks ago, but Fleetwood said there’s been no signs of being under done in training.

“I would say that we’ve trained the best we’ve ever trained, everyone is switched on and focused on the job at hand and the sessions have been really good with plenty of enthusiasm from the boys.”

There’s no illusion that Saturday is just a case of showing up and taking the Watters Cup home either. Fleetwood said the feeling is that it’s going to be a hard-fought contest between two good sides, although he did suggest Methven will need to get out

of the blocks a little better than they have been.

“You can’t afford to be 20 points down in a final, but we’re an 80 minute rugby side so everyone is going to give it everything.”

And while the focus is very much on Saturday, the prospect of what lies next for

one of Mid Canterbury’s most experienced senior players is there in the back of the mind.

Is there a return next year in the pipeline?

“I’m probably as comfortable as I’ve ever been with not playing again after this week, but you should never say never.”

Djokovic hits back at Kyrgios NZME Novak Djokovic has repeatedly shrugged off Nick Kyrgios’ podcast taunts – until now.

The back-to-back Wimbledon champion has finally shown a hint of his true feelings, throwing some serious shade at the Aussie star on social media.

The 16-time grand slam champion had let his racquet do all the talking for him as he surged to an iconic five-set victory over Roger Federer in the final at Wimbledon, while Kyrgios’ second round loss to Rafael Nadal saw him slump to No. 47 on the ATP Tour Rankings released this week.

With Kyrgios enjoying a 2-0 winning record against Djokovic, the 24-year-old has previously suggested Djokovic isn’t at the same level of greatness as Federer or Nadal.

He voiced those feelings without fear in an explosive podcast with New York Times tennis expert Ben Rothenberg, where he labelled the Serb “cringe-worthy”.

“I just feel like he has a sick obsession with wanting to be liked,”

Kyrgios told the No Challenges Remaning Podcast.

“He just wants to be like Roger.

For me personally – I don’t care right now, I’ve come this far – I feel like he just wants to be liked so much that I just can’t stand him.

“This whole celebration thing [the ‘boob-throwing’ celebration] that he does after matches, it’s like so cringe-worthy. It’s very cringeworthy.

“He’s an unbelievable player, he’s a champion of the sport; one of the greatest we’ll ever see. He probably will, honestly, I reckon he will get the Grand Slam count, I reckon he will overpass Federer.

“We’re talking about a guy who pulled out of the Australian Open one year because it was too hot. No matter how many Grand Slams he wins, he will never be the greatest for me.

“Simply because, I’ve played him twice and like, I’m sorry, but if you can’t beat me, you’re not the greatest of all time.

“Because, if you like look at my day-to-day routine and how much I train and how much I put

in, it’s zero compared to him.”

Djokovic refused to respond to the taunts all through his grass court campaign, saying on the eve of Wimbledon that he “wasn’t losing sleep” over the claims. He also said he hasn’t had a problem with anyone else on the ATP Tour.

Only Kyrgios.

Having defended his Wimbledon title in dramatic fashion on Monday morning, Djokovic finally showed how he really feels about Kyrgios when he liked an Instagram Post where tennis legend John McEnroe was quoted from a BBC Radio interview declaring Kyrgios would be a top five player on the planet if he was able to give consistent, honest efforts every time he stepped onto the court.

Instead he finds himself just clinging onto a spot in the top 50.

“Is he good for the game? Yes he’s good for the game,” McEnroe told BBC Radio 5.

“Does he sell tickets? Yes. I can’t handle the fact that he only tries half the time. We can’t support that anymore. I don’t think he should be out there anymore

unless he gives an honest effort – that’s my personal opinion.

“The guy would be top five in the world for sure if he was able to do it [give honest effort]. He’s got an incredible – this is my opinion – fear of failure. He doesn’t even allow himself to train hard enough to give himself a chance.

“You saw what he is capable of, he was driving Nadal crazy, it was the best second-round match, one of the best matches of the whole tournament. But when he plays guys he’s supposed to beat, he doesn’t even show up.”

UK tennis site sportwalk.co then republished McEnroe’s comments on Instagram in a post liked by Djokovic where the iconic American brat rubbished the Aussie’s failure to deliver on his abundant talent.

It was a different tune to the Djokovic that fans saw during the Wimbledon championships – where he consistently palmed off questions about Kyrgios’ barbs.

“Honestly, I think that deep down he is not such a bad guy,” Djokovic said. “I don’t know why Kyrgios says all these things.

Whether he is seeking attention or has some other motive.

“He obviously wants to be sincere and transparent. It’s the way he is, I respect that like I respect all other players on tour.

“He can say what he wants, I don’t have a problem with it. Does he show me the same amount of respect that most other players do? No, he doesn’t, but that’s the way he communicates these days.”

Djokovic’s comments did nothing to add fuel to the fire, but Kyrgios made sure their friction continued to burn past the end of the tournament when he took to Twitter on the day of the men’s final, openly barracking for Federer to topple his long-time rival.

There doesn’t appear to be any signs of peace between the two parties any time soon, but the tennis world is fast moving on from Kyrgios’ schoolboy antics.

He heads to the US Open, beginning August 27, as the World No. 47.

Djokovic will arrive as the World No. 1 with 16 majors to his name.

Payout denied over Stokes’ controversial six NZME Ben Stokes’ controversial last-over six during the Cricket World Cup final sparked heartbreak for New Zealanders across the nation.

But while Black Caps fans have slowly come to terms with things, one Kiwi punter is still feeling the hurt after being denied a $1575 return from Sportsbet over the classification of Stokes’ six.

The punter placed a $12 four-leg multi-bet with Sportsbet, with the first three legs betting Simona Halep to win the women’s singles final against Serena Williams, and for Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer to win their respective men’s singles semifinals in four sets at Wimbledon.

All three were successful, however, the last leg for England to score the most sixes, as well as the World Cup, was deemed lost.

Both sides hit two regulation sixes but England scored six runs – two normal runs plus four overthrows – off the third last ball after it hit Stokes’ bat and deflected to the boundary for four.

The Kiwi punter claims the six should’ve been counted toward his bet, therefore, earning him a $1575 return.

The punter, who has asked not to be named, raised the matter with Sportsbet but was told a six only counted if it was hit over the boundary.

With currently no reference to the rule under the “Team to hit the most sixes/ Team to hit the most sixes and win the match” subheading on the terms and conditions page on Sportsbet’s website, the Kiwi fan has argued the company’s guidelines are ambiguous.

Under bets about a six being scored in a specific over, however, it states that “for the avoidance of doubt players running six and boundaries which are counted as extras do not count for this market”.

Sportsbet are reportedly looking further into the matter.

Meanwhile, Sportsbet refunded more than 11,000 punters for bets on both the head to head and outright tournament markets due to the controversial finish of the grand final.

Animal Mobiles Ashburton Art Gallery The gallery is running a special holiday programme these July school holidays. Taking inspiration from the depiction of animals on display in the Ashburton Society of Arts exhibition, children and adults will be able to make their very own animal mobile or add to the community mobile which will be hung in the gallery.

This programme is open to children aged 3 years and above. Adult supervision is required for children under the age of 13 years.

BRAWLEY, Colin John (Reg. No 888070) – Passed away peacefully at Ashburton Hospital, on July 17, 2019. Aged 87 years. Son of the late Robert and Ivy and brother of the late Desmond, the late Russell, and Arnold.

Swimmers star in tri-series Two local Ashburton swimmers took part in a unique Swimming Canterbury West Coast event last weekend that had them trekking around the Canterbury Plains.

Both Hannah King and Mitchell Veix, who are members of the Ashburton Swim Team, took part

in the SCWC Tri-Series tour which took part over three days during the course of last week and the weekend.

A rigorous pathway that exposes athletes to different training and racing environments, the event saw two rounds of swimming in

Ashburton at the EA Networks Centre on Saturday and Sunday as well as similar events at pools in Selwyn and Timaru.

The main focus of the series is the constant pursuit of improved performance, skills and techniques.

Attending swimmers were from across the Canterbury region and were split into three groups, which helps promote strong team spirit and encourages competition.

All swimmers taking part in the series had to meet qualifying standards.Â

Selectors name five rookies in All Blacks’ lineup

Both King and Veix performed with distinction over the six sessions and were each awarded a Swimmer of the Session title for their respective teams.

King went a step further by being named the overall most improved swimmer from her squad.
