Locals hit by email scams

It’s not only the phonelines that scammers are targeting, with a number of Ashburton residents reporting the circulation of fake and even blackmailing emails.

Department phishing scam which offers a refund to the recipient if they click a link to a “customer portal”.

The email states that the recipient has successfully submitted a claim form for the refund, but must review the refund urgently by following the link.

A similar scam had been circulating last year and IRD had received 120 calls in the space of 12 hours reporting it.

Stronger stance call on smoking

Smokefree Mid Canterbury wants a stronger stance against smoking in the CBD. The organisation surveyed 100 people visiting or working in the central business area recently and found 84 would like to see a smokefree CBD. Eleven people were against the idea and five were undecided.

Smokefree Mid Canterbury will push for designated smoking areas within the CBD when it makes submissions to the Ashburton District Council next week about its town centre revitalisation project.

Carly McDowell and Mandy Casey said four other towns had smokefree CBD policies and Ashburton was also leading the way with smokefree outdoor areas, sports clubs, parks, playgrounds, civic centre entrances and shopping centre car parks.

But more was needed to ensure a smokefree future for the district’s children.

The 2013 census showed that of 22,620 people who answered the smoking question, just 3831 were smokers.

Licensed premises who are members of the Ashburton Alcohol Accord have said they do not support any further smokefree regulation by council. Members

were still evaluating the economic impact of council’s smokefree alfresco dining policy.

The accord group did support the overall revitalisation project but worried that including smokefree regulation could have

unintended consequences, like changing the distribution and dynamics of patrons at establishments who might sneak off to smoke outside designated areas.

Council received 66 submissions from ratepayers and mem-

bers of the public over its plans to beautify and bring some colour to the CBD. Most agreed the area was tired and needed a revamp though some did not want the one-way streets.

There was majority agreement on free and easier parking with several submitters commenting that improvements needed to be practical as well as beautifying the area.

Building owner and retailer Barry Redmond supported the changes for more attractive streetscapes and more pedestrian-friendly areas.

“The plan hopefully will revitalise a very tired looking CBD.” Building owners would need to get on board, he said.

Andrew Cartwright said it would be a challenge for council to change the mindset of people who wanted to drive and park right outside their destination.

The submitters will put their thoughts to councillors on Monday.

Council has proposed creating a 30km/h speed zone in the CBD and a more pedestrian and cyclefriendly environment. The redevelopment would also include the installation of parking sensors with time-restricted, free parking in some areas.

New Zealand Police advised that by hijacking the trusted brands of well-known banks, online retailers and credit card

companies, phishers are often able to convince up to 5 per cent of recipients to respond to them.

Other locals had also received an email saying “you have been on my radar for a while now. I have infected your computer through a malware virus”.

In the email, the sender claims the virus gives them access to the recipient’s camera, microphone and contact lists.

They claim to have obtained

a compromising video of the recipient.

If payment is not made within three days, the sender threatens to send the compromising video to all the recipient’s contacts.

Last year, Netsafe acknowledged the circulation of the same scam and were then advising recipients not to pay the ransom, nor contact the scammers involved.

Netsafe advised that blackmail

is a serious criminal offence in New Zealand, punishable by up to 14 years’ imprisonment, and said scams should be reported to authorities.

Ashburton Senior Sergeant Phil Dean seconded advice to not give out personal details online or over the phone and to report suspected scams.

“Someone may have planted something in the server which can get into your phone and actually track all your keyboard strokes if you are using online banking or putting in passwords,” he said.

Luxury Teslas can now get topped up in Methven

Methven had its first electric vehicle charging station installed on Tuesday, and it could not have come soon enough for one motorist.

Methven is behind many other areas in having a charging station installed after the Ashburton District Council and EA Networks disagreed on the initial proposed location near the Methven Medical Centre.

But this week a new Tesla charging station was hooked up at Brinkley Resort, where motorist John Drew was waiting to charge his car.

Teslas are luxury electric $100,000-plus vehicles developed as the brainchild of entrepreneur Elon Musk.

Drew, chief executive of Blue Coconut in Christchurch, was taking his 12-year-old daughter Mia for an outing to Mt Hutt in their new Model X. As pleased as he was with the amazing views, once on the mountain he realised recharging would make it more likely he would get back to Christchurch without fear of running out of electricity.

He enquired at Mt Hutt, whereupon a staff member phoned Methven electrician Mike Pulley.

“And I said – it happens I’m putting one in this afternoon,” Pulley recounted to the Guardian.

He only had to wait a few minutes for Pulley to do the finishing

touches and launch the station.

“I got into them because this is the way of the future,” said Drew, who had enjoyed the handling

and performance of his new car on the way down the Mt Hutt access road.

Brinkley owner operator Paul Creswick said it was great for Methven to have Tesla provide the charging equipment, and the new station would help attract people to the town.

“Part of the deal is they will advertise Methven as a Tesla charging centre all around the world,” he said.

Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie said the ski area had considered installing a Tesla charging point last year, but then realised the chargers were different to Nissan chargers.

“Once the EV industry arrives at a universal charger we will look at it. We also have the challenge that there are not many good areas up here to install them,” McKenzie said.

The latest proposed site for a public charging point in Methven is outside Mt Hutt Memorial Hall Methven, however, this is yet to be confirmed, according to EA Networks.

Commercial manager Jeremy Adamson said plans were still on track for the charging point, and in the meantime he welcomed Brinkley Resort installing the Tesla charging station.

“The more the merrier. There’s going to be hundreds of these things down the track, throughout the country,” Adamson said.

Public backs fewer councillors

Ashburton residents support cutting the number of Ashburton District Councillors from 12 to nine, based on submissions to council’s representation review.

the status quo of 12.

Councillors will consider the submissions at an extraordinary council meeting next Thursday.

Under the Local Electoral Act 2001, all councils have to review their representation arrangements at least once every six years. Ashburton’s last review was in 2012.

Duncan Grant was among

those backing council’s proposal to cut councillor numbers to nine.

He said fewer numbers might reduce the “teams” that had emerged around the council table.

“With fewer councillors we may return to a situation where people are proud of their town, not just grandstanding. A reduced number of councillors may get a team-

work atmosphere running again and be ultimately more efficient.”

Grey Power and the Rakaia Community Association supported the status quo of 12 councillors.

The Rakaia group said it regularly enjoyed having a councillor in attendance at monthly meetings and was worried that councillors would be spread too thinly

to be able to do their jobs properly.

It was important that the thoughts and opinions of smaller groups and clubs were made known at council meetings, the association said.

Grey Power members voted by a show of hands at their June meeting that they did not want numbers reduced to nine.

Drug utensils readily available

A Northland couple have successfully managed to have methamphetamine paraphernalia removed from the shelves of two discount stores in their area after discovering that it can be imported and sold under the guise of ‘tobacco pipes’ or ‘aromatherapy oil burners’.

Yesterday morning, I set out on an undercover mission to see just how easy it is to buy drug paraphernalia in Ashburton.

Long story short: alarmingly easy.

Under the incredibly flawed pretext of a young girl seeking a “meth pipe prop for a dress-up party,” I ventured to four of the district’s discount stores to try my luck.

As I parked outside the first, Coin Save, part of me was anxious I could ruin my relationship with the kind store owners, who once helped me find a fanny pack when I was at my wits end (long story).

Part of me was bummed out that I’d come up with the dumb idea in the first place, having probably about as much knowledge of drug paraphernalia as your average Gloriavale resident.

Part of me was bummed out that my colleagues had thought it was a great idea, and taken it seriously.

But it wasn’t tough. Three of the four shops had a range of items which they were more than happy to show me and let me browse at my leisure.

Editor Matt Markham would later remark that this was concerning, considering I look like a 12-year-old (cruel but true).

In the depths of a glass counter at Coin Save awaited an impressive bong collection and assortment of pipes, including some “multi-functional smoking pipes” and water pipes in battered cardboard boxes.

The friendly shopkeeper pulled out the said battered cardboard boxes for a look. The English sections informed me the products were designed to take “tobacco only,” but Google told me quite a different story.

Crash near Chertsey Emergency services raced up State Highway 1 to attend a car crash near Chertsey on Monday morning.

Two vehicles had collided in the southbound lane shortly after 9.30am. Police, St John ambulance crews and Fire and Emergency volunteers were seen working at the scene and redirecting traffic, as the southbound lane of the road was partially blocked. No one was injured in the crash, however police reported that one car had to be towed from the scene.

Smoking chimneys Environment Canterbury staff have visited Ashburton four times so far as part of their annual winter air programme, and plans to visit again sometime this week. They are on the lookout for chimneys smoking for more than 15 minutes in the town’s clean-air zone, and also respond to complaints, work with householders who have non-compliant burners, and carry out in-home training. On the four visits so far, a total of 18 chimneys have been seen smoking for more than 15 minutes for a first time, and information about how to burn smoke-free has been left in each letterbox.

You won’t find the classic glass meth pipe for sale at Ashburton retailers, but you will find a heck of a lot of other paraphernalia – no ID needed.

But I resolved to go in for the kill, and make my purchase of a small green water pipe for less

than a tenner, which Google again confirmed could be used for meth.

I swiped my Eftpos card through the machine. I entered my pin. I put my Eftpos card back in my wallet. No ID was needed.

It was mine to use as I please.

“This could even make a nice little vase,” I blurted like a bumbling ignoramus as I left the shop.

So there you have it folks. Cigarettes cannot be displayed and anyone who looks under 25 is asked for ID. Possession of drug utensils such as pipes and bongs is a crime, punishable by fine, under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975.

But your good ol’ local discounttstore is free to display and distribute equipment to potential 12-year-olds, recovering addicts and vulnerable community members alike.

“High” time for things to change? I would think so.

Worker crushed An Auckland construction worker has died after being crushed by machinery. The accident took place on Tuesday on a construction site on Mamaku Drive in Massey about 3pm. The man was driving a soil compactor when it rolled down a hill trapping him underneath.

St John said the man was taken to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition. A police spokesman said yesterday the man had died in hospital overnight.

Nurses’ pay dispute Crunch time to settle nurses’ pay is being dragged out until next week but bargaining is under way. The New Zealand Nurses’ Organisation and district health boards met in Wellington on Tuesday to discuss a fifth offer. NZNO spokeswoman Karen Coltman said delegates were exploring options to settle the current employment negotiations for the DHB Multi-Employer Collective Agreement for midwives and nurses.

Putting together the gangland murder puzzle Police have found the Nissan Terrano they believe was involved in the murder of a Ngaruawahia man at McLaren Falls.

Detective Inspector Graham Pitkethley said they were now seeking sightings of the car between Hamilton and the falls around the time Mitchell Paterson was killed.

He also confirmed Paterson, 26, was beaten to death before his body wasfound in water under the McLaren Falls bridge.

He appealed for sightings of the vehicle between Hamilton and the McLaren Falls area between Wednesday 11 July and Friday 13 July.

He said every day police were getting closer to making arrests on three gang-related murders in the Waikato.

Organised crime and gangs were an ongoing problem in the Waikato and across the country, Detective Inspector Graham Pitkethley said at a press conference yesterday afternoon.

Huntly man Wayne Noda was the first hit.

He was found dead in his Berryman Access Rd home on Saturday June 30.

Pitkethley yesterday confirmed Noda died from being beaten and they were now only looking for one of the two vehicles of interest.

The occupants of a silver SUV seen on Victoria St, Hamilton, near Bryce St, about 6.30pm on the day of his death had come forward and been spoken to.

However, they were still keen to find a 2001 Nissan Skyline, registration KAM195.

It’s understood Noda wasn’t in deep with the gangs but he has family and associates who are.

When Robert Nelson was shot dead in the house of his partner

Kahlee Marfell, protecting her from a flurry of bullets, people wondered if perhaps the shooting was connected to Noda’s death.

It occurred a week after Noda died so was it a retaliation killing?

Police wouldn’t say but those close to “Griff” all but dismissed the suggestion.

Patterson confirmed at the time that Nelson was shot after a “number of shots” were fired in the house but little other detail was given.

Marfell lived at the Matthews Cres, Melville, home with her senior Mongrel Mob gang member dad Mark “Griff” Griffiths.

He was also home but was able to stay safe in his bedroom which was further down the hallway.

His 17-year-old nephew didn’t fare as well though. He got shot four times, a relative told the Herald, two in the torso, one in the head and the other in the shoulder, after three gunmen knocked at the front door asking if “Mark” was home.

The teen is still fighting for his life in Auckland Hospital.

If the relative’s comment that the gunmen had asked for “Mark” at the door is true, Erin Nelson is right.

A source believed neither of the deaths were connected.

Police had been unusually quiet about the shooting for a week, despite a third person, Mitchell Paterson, being found dead at McLaren Falls on Friday morning.

He was found in a body of water under the bridge and now police are seeking sightings of suspicious activity, either by vehicles or people, from the day before.

Police said he was killed after a “physical assault”.

Since his death, the Hamilton community has been on edge, and again people wondered if it was that retaliatory step that was being thrown around after, likely another gang, targeted a senior Mongrel Mob member.

The police Eagle helicopter has been more prolific in Hamilton’s skies in recent days, while the armed offenders squad has been seen in neighbourhoods.

There have been three arrests, although only one that is allegedly directly linked to a murder.

James Lee Green is in custody charged with being an accessory after the fact of murder by helping another man – who the Herald has chosen not to name – dispose of Paterson’s body.

With still no word from police on Monday and from comments made by residents on social media, anxiety levels were rising in the community.

Waikato police Superintendent Bruce Bird finally responded to requests for comment on Tuesday, confirming the deaths didn’t appear to be linked but they were all gang-related.

Auckland council, mayor served, sued A pro-free-speech group has filed court papers suing Auckland Council and Mayor Phil Goff over the ban of two controversial “alt media” speakers from using cityowned venues.

In a statement yesterday, the Free Speech Coalition said it had filed papers in the High Court at Auckland against Goff, the council and Regional Facilities Auckland (Auckland Live) under the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act. Before filing proceedings, the group also wrote an open letter to the mayor suggesting he avoid the costs of litigation by entering into discussions with the promoters of Lauren Southern and Stefan Molyneux’s speaking event, Axiomatic Media.

The Canadian pair, who were due talk at the Bruce Mason Centre on Auckland’s North Shore next month, are known for holding farright views on immigration, feminism and Islam.

In the coalition’s statement of claim, Southern and Molyneux are said to promote themselves as “alt media”.

The group’s open letter to Goff describes what it claims were the council’s lack of discussions over security concerns with the organisers or police, prior to Goff’s tweet announcing the ban.

The letter also noted that the Canadian speakers’ Australian tour was being hosted in local council or state government-owned venues.

“The coalition gets the impression the mayor is eager for the police to say they can’t uphold their duty to keep the peace and protect free speech – a sad contrast with Australia that we never expected,” the group’s statement read.

Southern, who arrived in Australia last weekend, was banned from entering Britain this year for her part “in the distribution of racist material in Luton”, according to the BBC. The coalition also includes former Labour Party Minister Dr Michael Bassett, former leader of the National and Act Parties Dr Don Brash, business leader Ashley Church, and university lecturers.

Accused had history of mental health issues – dad Accused teenage murderer Teancum Vernon Petersen-Crofts has a long history of mental health issues, his father has confirmed.

Awatea Crofts said his son had been admitted to several mental health facilities in the past - but had never received the appropriate medical help, ABC News reports.

Even throughout this year, his son was in and out of mental health facilities and recently his condition had declined.

Petersen-Crofts appeared in a Perth court on Monday after being charged with the death of his mother, Michelle Petersen, 48, her daughter Bella, 15, and son Rua, 8.

The bodies of his mother and Rua were discovered inside their Ellenbrook home on Sunday. Bel-

la was found critically injured in the backyard. She died on the way to hospital.

Local media have reported that Petersen-Crofts had presented at a Perth hospital in a “psychotic state” on Saturday night but was turned away after police became involved.

In early 2015 he was hospitalised in Christchurch after a series of ongoing mental health episodes, Crofts told ABC News.

“It was very difficult for him and the mental health staff. It was a perpetual, continual episode after episode.

“His mother did everything she could and just in the last days, her last six months, she was still doing everything she could but his condition had blown right out,” he said.

Trump’s backflip a flop In a shocking revelation, no one is buying Donald Trump’s latest backflip.

The US President executed an astonishing 180 following his deeply criticised show of support for Vladimir Putin at their summit in Finland.

Trump said he now “accepts” the intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia meddled in the US presidential election – the opposite of what he said in Helsinki – and claimed he used the wrong word.

“In a key sentence in my remarks, I said the word ‘would’ instead of ‘wouldn’t’,” he explained.

He said the sentence should have been, “I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be Russia,” rather than, “I don’t see any reason why it would be Russia.”

Trump said it was “sort of a double negative,” adding, “I think that probably clarifies things pretty good by itself.”

It was also pointed out he made a handwritten note of his own during his “clarification” moment.

Despite saying he now accepts the intelligence community’s verdict on Russia, he’s written a misspelled note that says “THERE WAS NO COLUSION”.

CNN’s chief political analyst Gloria Borger said: “This president looked like he was in a hostage situation, reading from a script that others had written for him, that he clearly did not want to read.”

“Each day’s news cycle is bringing more head-spinning and disturbing headlines,” Obama said, calling these “strange and uncertain times we are in”.

Obama urged people around the world to respect human rights and other threatened values in his most high-profile speech since leaving office, at

the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s birth in South Africa.

“We see much of the world threatening to return to a more dangerous, more brutal, way of doing business,” he said.

He did not directly mention Trump, but his comments were clearly a response to the President’s heavily criticised performance in Helsinki.

“I am not being alarmist, I am simply stating the facts,” Obama said. “Look around.”

He also spoke for equality, saying that “I would have thought we had figured that out by now.”

Eavesdropping passengers give teacher a lift Chicago schoolteacher Kimberly Bermudez has always been the chatty type.

So when she was on a Southwest Airlines flight to Florida to visit her parents last week, and her seatmate asked her what she did for a living, she told him about her first-graders, some of whom are homeless, and all of whom come from low-income families.

He asked her: “What’s the most challenging part of your job?”

When children come to school hungry, she said, and seeing hard-working immigrant parents struggling to provide basic necessities for their families.

“You can’t control what happens at home,” Bermudez, 27, said in an interview with the Washington Post, recalling what she told him. “These parents are amazing. They won’t eat to feed their child.”

The seatmate replied that his company donates to schools such as hers, and she enthusiastically said her charter school, Carlos Fuentes Ele-

A moment later, she felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around to see the man seated in the row behind her, who had a baby on his lap.

He apologised for eavesdropping. Then he handed her a stack of cash.

“Do something amazing,” he told her.

Bermudez looked down and saw a $100 bill on top. She remembered from her babysitting days that her parents said never to count money in front of anybody. She accepted the gift and thanked him. She felt

her eyes filling with tears.

As the plane landed in Jacksonville, a man in the aisle across from her told her he was listening to her conversation as well.

He said he didn’t have much money on him but handed her a $US20.

Then a third contributor: “As if my heart couldn’t be any happier, the man in front turned around as well,” Bermudez said.

He said all he had was $US10, and he gave it to her.

She began to cry in gratitude.

“I said, ‘I’m not here to solicit money; I really am here on this plane just to see my parents,” she recalled saying. “And one of them said, ‘I know. That’s why we’re giving it to you. Use your voice. Use your gift of talking’.”

Bermudez walked off the plane almost in a daze. She had no idea how much money she was holding.

Her mother picked her up, and when she got in the car, she counted the money: Five $US100 bills, one $US20 bill and one $US10 bill.

She was holding $US530, all given to her by kind strangers, all to help the kids she loves.

Bermudez was not only shocked by the generosity of her fellow passengers but also surprised at something else.

“My generation, we don’t carry any cash,” she said. “I would never expect a complete stranger to have that much cash on them.”

She posted her story on Facebook, where it has been liked by more than 1000 people and shared nearly 800 times. Some of her parents’ friends saw the post and sent her supplies and books for her students.

Bermudez said she plans to use the money to buy books for her students, many of them emerging readers, so they can keep them at home. She also is looking into buying backpacks and other school supplies for her students.

As for the man who gave her the stack of hundred-dollar bills, he remains a mystery.

“I have no idea who he is,” Bermudez said. “He was just an amazing stranger.”

Drug utensil availability needs scrutiny I

t’s not something we tend to encourage often here at the Guardian, but the chance to send one of our hardy reporting souls out into the big wide world to buy drug paraphernalia seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up.

It wasn’t so much that there was a fascination with the actual items themselves, but more the way in which a buyer experienced purchasing such products in shops in our district.

Initially, the idea was seen as a bit of a laugh – but it quickly turned into something a little more serious when we realised just how readily available these

items were at a number of stores locally.

In fact, anyone could walk off the street and take a look at a pipe or a bong or any other item that could be related to the rather large problem of drug taking which we have in our society currently.

The reporter in question, Katie

Todd – she’s no battle hardened journo who’s been plying her trade since the days of the typewriter. She is young enough to probably pass for someone who most retailers would suggest as being a little suspect to buy such merchandise over the counter without a raised eyebrow.

But that’s exactly what she did.

Wandered into a store – made up some half-pie decent excuse about it being a prop for a party – and out she walked, no questions asked, no ID required.

Should we, as a community be worried about that?

You’d like to think we would be.

Daily we are reminded of the battles this country faces with people who suffer from substance abuse.

The pain and emotional damage they do to their family and friends, as well as others, is evident in the news stories we see on our televisions, websites or newspapers – yet here we are making it so simple to buy the tools to partake.

Something doesn’t quite fit.

We have removed cigarettes from plain sight in stores in an effort to repel the everyday smoker, but in stores that are frequented constantly by children such items as a pipe used for

smoking illicit drugs are there for anyone to see.

While fully understanding that these stores aren’t selling the actual drugs over their counters, they are in some way promoting the activity of drug-taking by actively showing the tools of the trade.

And the fact that it was so easy for someone to walk in and purchase such an item should be enough to make those fighting hard in the battle with drugs out there in our community want to do something to stop it.

We can’t hide from the fact it’s a problem and we certainly can’t be oblivious to it either.

ome people have to travel the world to get unbelievable experiences.

For me, I have had plenty of those much closer to home, throughout New Zealand’s heartland.

There was a time when I thought perhaps I might write a book about said experiences, but for now, this column will do just nicely.

Who knows, it may be quite cathartic and remove the need for a book entirely.

Now if you are in the industry I’m about to address, please do not get all steamed and huffy and write letters to the editor.

These are my observations, all without a shred of exaggeration, and if, as a result, there may be a little contemplation and refinement to processes, then my work here will be done.

You see, I have had the odd trip through drive-throughs over the years. Plenty of time spent inter-city, on the road and in a hurry has meant that often, a quick roll through the vehicle service lane has made practical sense.

Those who know me will understand that I can perhaps be a tad impatient.

Usually polite and courteous.

Until the first hurdle.

You know how it goes.

“Welcome to Whatsitburgers, can I take your order?

Me: “Yes, I’ll have a Thing Burger, and a potato and gravy please.”

Them: “Would you like chips/ fries with that?”

Me: “No, that’s all thanks.”

I grew a little tired of the relentless up-selling so I developed a thing where I would say “and that’s all thanks” at the conclusion of my order. But of course they don’t listen. They’re busy people, I get that. And they are under orders from above to suggestive sell more stuff.

But after a fair bit of this “and that’s all thanks” and them still asking, I grew tired of the not listening and would spit out ... “(long pause for extra im-

When they still insisted would I like chips or a drink, I developed another response where I would say, “oh ok yes thank you ... if you’re shouting that’d be great”.

The intercom usually went stone-cold silent.

I also have a problem with people who dis this convenience fare as “junk” food. If it is good enough for Chinese people to serve up on their boats, it’s good enough for me. A lot of them live to a pretty ripe old age.

Once in Blenheim, I was grabbing some breakfast road food and on ordering was extremely careful to request my preferred choice WITHOUT an egg in it.

Now for the record, I like eggs but didn’t fancy one at this moment in this combination, so took pains to politely and concisely stress the point. Without any fear of a cock-up.

Down the road a kilometre or two and the goods were being opened up and distributed by the Mrs Mac – EGG ALERT, EGG ALERT, EGG ALERT. I spun the car around and headed back to hold a polite and courteous commission of inquiry with the staff as to why a rogue egg has made its way into my order when I had expressly requested otherwise.

My son in the back seat threw a complete spaz and wouldn’t talk to me for a week.

As a parent charged with nurturing and educating a young person, I pointed out that it was important that clear instructions were interpreted accurately and I was only taking bothersome

remedial steps to achieve what I had requested in the first place.

In Dunedin on one particular occasion, I dined-in and part of my order was a cup of white tea.

A simple request one would have thought. After all, a number of decades earlier we had managed to get a man on the moon. And back again.

On arrival to our table, it looked like a piece of the Antarctic had broken off and was floating around in it. When I enquired as to the reason I was informed, “We are out of milk.”

“Why don’t you send someone across the road for some?” I asked. “We are too busy,” came the response. In front of a busy queue, I proclaimed, “then Let Me Help”.

On that, I wandered across the road and purchased – at my own expense – a 2 litre of milk and delivered it to the counter and donated it. To a corporate giant.

I’m good like that.

I sat down and made my way through the meal and ... still no replacement drink.

The buggers, still couldn’t bring themselves to knock me out a white tea, with actual milk, not ICECREAM floating in it after I had DONATED them a 2 litre.

I was just stunned. Can it get that bad? Yes apparently, indeed it can.

And here’s my final helpful observation, proffered only to do my small bit to enhance efficiencies in the industry.

No-one alive today has successfully removed a tea bag in the car without the contents of the cup spilling all over the place and then the drippy bag making a hell of a mess all over the

upholstery.

Here’s a wild idea. Remove the bag, in the kitchen, before you serve the drink to the customer.

During the war, codes were very useful things. You could develop one, say a 1 to 10 code where one is very, very weak, five is medium and 10 is black. “I’ll have a white tea, 7 thanks.” How EASY is that?

And finally the one that completely does my head in.

You go through the drivethrough at 9.30pm and after collecting your order they say, parrot fashion, “Have a nice day.”

How can I, it is almost over. In three-and-a-half hours it’ll be tomorrow.

God forbid they go off-script and throw in something more relevant and meaningful, like “Enjoy the rest of your evening?” or “have a great night bud?”

But seriously, to end on a positive, I am in awe of the way some of those crew members juggle the cars and orders during insanely busy times in the drivethroughs.

Taking orders at one point, while simultaneously giving change further on round the queue. They’re spinning a lot of plates.

Hard-working people when the heat’s on ... just a few little things to work on though guys.

NZ velvet prospects looking positive Long-term prospects for NZ velvet in the major Asian markets are looking positive, says Deer Industry NZ (DINZ) Asia manager Rhys Griffiths.

“There has been an explosion in consumer demand for consumerready velvet-based products in Korea. Ten years ago this product category didn’t even exist,” he said.

“In the past six months, 23 new velvet-based healthy food products have been launched in Korea; the majority of them using New Zealand velvet.

“Yuhan Pharmaceuticals, which signed a memorandum of understanding with DINZ last year, is now a major player in this market.

Their impressive New Origin concept store/café in Seoul features recently launched products that contain NZ velvet and runs NZ deer farm imagery on large video screens inside.”

Griffiths says the Chinese market for velvet has yet to make the leap into consumer-ready healthy food products, but many manufacturers in China are aware of what has happened in Korea and believe it can be repeated in China.

“The main barrier is a lack of confidence in the path to market for consumer products based on

New Zealand velvet.

“These products cost millions of dollars to develop and market, so manufacturers need to be convinced they are not infringing a rule or regulation along the way,” he said.

Griffiths says DINZ, based on discussions with Chinese regulators, believes there is no problem. But to provide confidence to potential customers, DINZ is working with some exporters and NZ Trade and Enterprise to commission a report by a respected Chinese regulatory expert on the pathway to market.

This will be provided to key manufacturers when it has been completed.

Still, Griffiths understands why Chinese manufacturers may be unsettled.

“In the last three years – to improve consumer safety – there has been a major tightening of the rules and regulations governing food and traditional medicines in China. This has included tighter standards for overseas suppliers,” Griffiths said.

“As a result, New Zealand velvet producers have had to create clean areas in their deer sheds and to meet tougher cold chain requirements.

“In China, velvet processors have had to make similar upgrades. Some have built completely new factories.”

The Foundation for Arable Research is (FAR) reminding farmers about the need for care around grain silos following a farm accident near Balclutha last week.

A 45-year-old man was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital after falling 15 metres into the silo. He was extracted by emergency services.

WorkSafe said it was investigating.

In its weekly newsletter to farmers, FAR said the accident was a reminder of the importance of on-farm health and safety.

“Please ensure that you and your staff take all practical steps to keep safe. Remember to use harnesses or rails when

working at height and have a buddy system in place when working near a grain silo.”

WorkSafe says people did regularly when entering confined spaces to carry out work; sometimes would be rescuers enter the space and become victims too.

Firefighters at the Balclutha incident said the man was lucky because the silo was nearly empty. Crews arrived to find the man lying flat on his back inside the silo.

They removed a side of the silo before the man was stretchered to a waiting rescue helicopter.

B+L collates farmer responses

To better tell NZ wool’s story Key players in New Zealand’s wool industry are to form a new co-ordinating group to better tell wool’s story, says Federated Farmers.

There was a real sense of urgency at this week’s Wool Summit in Wellington to get co-operation and momentum, said Miles Anderson, Federated Farmers Meat & Wool Industry Group Chairperson.

New Zealand wool producers have been under pressure, particularly in the past two years as

prices for strong wool hit record lows.

Anderson said the time for wool was now given how environmentally aware the greater community had become.

“Wool offers an environmentally friendly product as opposed to synthetics.”

Several working groups have previously unravelled, but the mentality and commitment that now exists in the industry shows an understanding of what has to be done for this industry to com-

pete and thrive.

“Wool producers have been able to survive during some trying times. They’ve done that with tenacity and a keen business sense which the working group should be able to draw from.”

Anderson said Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor had initiated the summit. “His continued support is crucial for success and hopefully this summit has provided the momentum needed to cast off for a vibrant future.”

After five weeks of consultation on increasing sheep meat and beef levies, Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) is now collating farmer feedback.

In June, B+LNZ launched the proposal to increase the sheepmeat levy by 10c to 70c per head and the beef levy by 80c to $5.20 per head.

If adopted, the rise would see an average sheep and beef farm pay an additional $260 per year, and an average dairy farm an extra $55, and raise just over $4 million.

The additional levies would be invested in the international activation of the organisation’s brands and reputation improvement strategies, as well as environmental performance and addressing biosecurity risks.

A spokesperson told the Guardian it was too early to say whether submissions were in favour or against the proposal, with collation still under way.

B+LNZ CEO Sam McIvor said the organisation appreciated farmers taking the time to share their thoughts.

“We’d like to thank farmers for their responses as we know it’s a busy time on the farm,” McIvor said.

“Along with receiving a good number of submissions, we’ve had great and robust discussions with farmers at nearly 50 events around the country over the past five weeks.”

Four-day work week trial a success

By Damien Venuto The Kiwi boss who trialled giving his staff a full salary for four days’ work says it was a success and that he wants it to become permanent at his Auckland company.

Andrew Barnes, the chief executive at Perpetual Guardian, says he’s already made a recommendation to his board to take the policy beyond the initial eightweek trial.

“The next thing is that I need to get the board to approve the recommendations in the next few weeks,” Barnes told the Herald.

During March and April, Perpetual Guardian conducted what was essentially a corporate experiment in allowing the company’s 240-person staff to retain full pay as well as a three-day weekend.

To ensure an objective analysis, Barnes invited academic researchers Jarrod Harr, a professor of human resource management at AUT and Dr Helen Delaney, a senior lecturer at the University of Auckland Business School, into the building to observe the impact of the trial on the workforce.

From the outset, there was always the risk that reducing work

hours would increase the stress on staff to achieve objectives while also leading to lower levels of output as working time was cut by a fifth.

But, as the trial rolled on, the researchers found quite the opposite to occur.

Barnes believes this is important in starting a broader conversation across the New Zealand workforce, particularly in light of the OECD’s two-yearly review of the economy showing that New Zealand lags well below leading countries in terms of productivity.

By melissa nightingale A Wellington businesswoman is taking steps to end modern-day slavery by developing technology to track clothing from its point of origin to sale.

“There’s about 16 million people that research indicates are in forced labour-type situations,” said Samantha Jones, who is developing the tracking system, Origins.

“The garment industry unfortunately plays a big role in that. People inadvertently purchase products that they have no idea where they’ve come from and that may have traces of modern-day slavery incorporated into that supply chain.”

The 28-year-old is the chief executive of Little Yellow Bird, a company she started when she saw a gap in the market for ethically made organic and fair-trade apparel.

looks to apply the initiative on an indefinite basis.

“It’s one thing to do a trial. It’s another thing to do it permanently and there are some problems around the way our employment legislation is constructed, but we think we’ve found a way around that.”

He explains that employment law – from the legislation through to the payroll system – is still largely based on the number of days and hours worked, with holidays accrued according to the amount of time spent in the office, and there are legal concerns when it comes to challenging this status quo.

“Employment law is rightly about protecting the rights of workers and people are worried that if you start changing the dynamics of a working week that might lead to people having to do more in less time and that it could lead to job losses,” Barnes said.

“We have to do a little bit of detailed work to ensure that we can comply with employment legislation when we bring this type of four-day week process into the mainstream and make it permanent.”

Jones has secured $1.2 million funding for Origins, which she will “test run” on her own company before hopefully making the technology available to other brands.

Little Yellow Bird already tracks its own garments right back to where the materials are sourced from, but the process is mainly paper-based and is “clunky” and “complicated”.

With Origins, people will be able to scan a code at the point of sale and receive the product’s history, she said.

“We wanted to change the way the industry works to make it more transparent and open.”

Consumers would be able to think about the brands they support, what type of system those brands were creating or contributing to, and make better choices with their money.

“We see every year more and more people getting on board and wanting to know more about

where their products come from.

“I think people don’t want to inadvertently buy products that have child labour or forced labour or are damaging to the environment, but at the moment often you can only go on what a brand is telling you or their social responsibility policies, which are often quite vague or not easily understandable.”

Many brands did not know where their products were coming from either, she said.

Jones and her team will head to India in August to start work on the technology.

She hopes when Origins is ready it will eventually be used by many brands in a variety of industries, including clothing and coffee.

Jones, who worked as a supply chain manager in the military and spent time living in developing countries as a child, will use NEM blockchain technology to create Origins.

While the headlines accompanying the trial all focused on the number of days staff at Perpetual Guardian were working, Barnes says this really isn’t the point of the study.

“We’re paying for productivity,” he said. “We’re making a clear distinction here between the amount of hours you spend in the office and what we get out of that.”

Barnes says this is relevant for the issues well beyond Perpetual Guardian, pointing out that a focus on productivity rather than the number of hours worked could help to address the problem of gender inequality in the workplace.

He argues that if a new mother or father, for instance, could fulfil their workplace obligations in reduced hours, then there’s no reason why she shouldn’t be given a full salary.

“If you can have parents spending more time with their children, how is that a bad thing?”

However, rolling out this theory in the real world isn’t without its challenges and Barnes notes there may be a few speedbumps along the way as Perpetual Guardian

The refinery’s hydrocracker had been scheduled for a 39-day shut ending on June 11, and that was initially extended to June 20 but further delays prevented the refinery resuming full output until July 6.

“The delay to restarting the refinery has meant a reduction in refining margin for the quarter, losses from unplanned fuel oil exports, and necessitated increased volumes of imported product purchased on the spot market rather

that Z’s advantaged term contract pricing,” Z said in a statement filed with the stock exchange.

Z, which acquired the rival Caltex business in 2016, reported a 6 per cent increase in replacement cost ebitdaf to $449 million for the year ended March 31. Net profit rose 16 per cent to $205 million on the same basis as the firm benefited from strong jet fuel and diesel demand and ongoing synergy gains from its acquisition.

Z purchases its crude from Shell and co-ordinates imports with the refinery and rival Mobil Oil New Zealand to optimise the operation at Marsden Point.

Green pea and prawn soup

Serves 4-6

■ Drop the prawns into a small saucepan of boiling salted water.

Bring back to the boil, simmer 2 minutes or until the prawns are just cooked. Remove from the heat, drain and cool. Slice the prawns thinly lengthways. Reserve.

300g raw peeled prawns, tails removed 1 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped Zest of 1 lemon 750ml chicken stock 1 medium-sized floury potato, peeled and diced 2cm (like Agria) 3C Select frozen peas, thawed Salt Freshly ground black pepper 100ml Homebrand cream Mint leaves for serving 2T butter

■ Melt the butter in a large saucepan over moderate heat and add the onion, garlic and zest. Fry gently, without browning for 10 minutes until the onion is soft.

Add the stock and diced potato and bring to the boil. Simmer 10 minutes until the potato is soft.

Add the peas and boil gently for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and purée using a wand blender or food processor.

■ Pour back into a clean saucepan and add the cream. Bring to the boil, taste and season. To serve, pour the soup into bowls, top with the cooked prawns and garnish with mint leaves.

■ Tip: Defrost your prawns quickly by placing in a colander and running them under cold water.

Ashburton Combined Friendship Club Mid-winter lunch Tuesday July 24 at the Tinwald Tavern.

Tony is working on a trip to Oamaru in August and planning trips in September–November.

Our mini speaker, member Janette Andrews, told us about the round New Zealand DC3 plane trip she and Allan took earlier this year. The itinerary starts from Auckland landing at provincial airports the length and breadth of the country, stopping in the nearby towns for a night or two to visit the tourist highlights. The trip took them to places that were new to them like Rotorua and New Plymouth.

President Errol continued his reminiscences of the Cust Road Circuit Motor Bike races formerly held every Easter. In the 1950s heyday a special train brought spectators from Christchurch and well known motorcycle racers took part including Burt Munroe and the McClearys. Last held in 1963, the day was very wet, attendance low, and Errol was left with many unsold pies! Errol also had some amusing anecdotes from his first fire brigade training at Island Bay, Wellington.

Our main speaker was Fay Watson, Chair of the Ashburton Licencing Trust. She outlined the history of the trust which was established by an Act of Parliament in 1949 after the restoration of alcohol sales. The new trust purchased the Devon and the Somerset, which had been hotels before 1902 and built hotels at Mt Somers, Mayfield and Hinds. Later the “Flash Ash” was built and other venues opened.

In recent times the Trust has become a landlord leasing the premises to owner operators.

This will generate a steady profit for the benefit of the local community and is administered separately from the gaming machine revenue administered by the Lion Foundation. Since 1992 more than $21 million has been distributed to more than 450 different local organisations from revenue raised by the Trust.

Ashburton Creative Fibre We would like to thank the Menz Shed members for making the new library cupboard. Very nice and will be with us for a long time.

The theme for our after meeting item was gadgets and gizmos with demonstrations of some interesting and useful gadgets. The midwinter meal went well with 26 attending. Back to Basics went well with around 400 interested people attending.

It is time to think about completing the bag challenge and bear making for September. Also for the judging day contributions for the raffle (no tinned goods).

There is still room for more attendees for the Staveley retreat to add to the sixteen already booked in.

Ashburton Golf Club We now have our President’s Trophy champion, and I know it will be a major shock to all the readers of this column, and the many fine golfers who play our great game, but this writer had no doubt at all. I stuck fast to my prediction and backed this warrior from the qualifying rounds. Stand up Ian Rive, soon to be Sir Ian, I’m sure. He laid on a masterclass in the final, letting Gordy Crawford sprint off into a decent lead. Then in the back straight he just yanked on the choke chain, stopped Gordy in his tracks and cruised past for a great win.

Playing alongside them in the plate final, old Spud adopted the same game plan against young pup Sean Strange. All was going well, Greig had let Sean build a good lead, running like a Labrador chasing seagulls. Then wily ole Spud yanked the chain, grinning from ear to ear, but Sean just kept on bounding away, dragging Greig behind him, bouncing along the ground, shouting “Whoa, whoa”. They were last seen down by Wakanui beach, still chasing seagulls. I’m sure Sean will get tired soon. Well done young fella, continuing the great family name down at the Brandon.

This Saturday, we are back into Club Champs Qualifying with round 4, stroke round off the Blue tees.

This is the round when grades are set for the knockout stages, so whatever your grade this week, you will keep throughout the Champs.

Blue tee handicaps, 0-9 is Senior, 10-15 intermediate, 16-22 Junior A, and 23+ Junior B. If you have played in qualifying but don’t wish to be in the knockout stages, please let Matt or Bruce know.

There is one more chance on August 18 to get another round in, to get your best 2 counters, and matchplay starts September 1.

This Saturday’s round is also an RMF Cup game, with 12 points on offer to the winner. Come on down and join the fun. Oh and if you see a Labrador dragging a stick on a chain behind it, can you try and stop it please, and tell him that he’s won! Good golfing.

Run and Walk Ashburton A group of ultra Early Bird runners (above) met on Saturday July 14 at Frontrunner at 6.45am to get a sneaky 6km run around the Ashburton streets before meeting up with the others at 7.30am for a 10km run.

Twelve runners in all ran down the river track, two carried on to the lake and back. Such a good number of runners meant everyone spread out into their own comfortable pace. Everyone had someone to chat to while achieving the distance and speed they wanted that morning.

Peter then introduced the speaker for the afternoon, Alex from Bay Audiology. Alex gave a visual presentation showing and explaining the various parts of the ear and how the ear worked; she went on to explain the different types of hearing loss; causes, effects and managing hearing loss. She also showed several different hearing aids and explained the funding options available. Questions were asked about cochlear implants, balance problems, volume control on hearing aids and managing tinnitus.

Cath Carr passed a vote of thanks and presented Alex with a fruit tray.

Vice President Colin welcomed Shirley back and advised the following; because we have stopped the obituary column in the newsletter Colin asked members to take a few minutes silence to acknowledge members who have passed; also the shingles vaccine is not always available; a letter had been sent to the council regarding the reduction in numbers of council members; delivery people are required for the newsletter; lichen on footpaths is still a problem; also some information about parking for Christchurch Hospital.

The raffle was drawn and prizes distributed.

The meeting closed at 2.50pm and afternoon tea was served.

Mid Canterbury Central Friendship Club A large turnout of 67 members and three visitors was welcomed by President Barry Quantock. Our Secretary, Derek Prebble, reminded members of a Canterbury Area luncheon scheduled for September 21 in Christchurch at $40 per head.

Our mini-speaker was Allan Breakwell who began his schooling at Allenton Primary and later Ashburton Tech. In 1964 he joined Dalgety and NZ Loan in Ashburton before transferring to Rakaia. He then moved to Mid Canterbury Transport in their Des-

adventure, getting good use out of warmer gear.

The morning rounded off with coffee at Columbus café.

A beautiful sunny warm winter’s day attracted a good group to the Afternoon Social Meet which started from the Ashburton Domain. Five runners gathered and ran down the north side of the river as far as the motor bike track and back to the domain oval pavilion.

Twenty walkers took advantage of learning better walking techniques from Keith Rutherford.

In 1969 he completed a Dale Carnegie course which enlightened him to ‘the power of enthusiasm’. In 1982 he began selling Datsun vehicles for Ashburton Motors. In 1985 the franchise (now Nissan) was sold to Drummond and Etheridge, where Allan remained for many successful years. He finished his career with 3 years at Placemakers before retiring.

Roger Lake introduced our main speaker, Errol Kingsbury, President of the Combined Friendship Club South Island. With forebears dating back to the arrival of the Charlotte Jane in 1850, Errol began work at 15 years in a grocery store in Cust, and later a general store in Akaroa. In 1966 he moved to PGG Wrightson in Takaka leading to transfers to Nelson, Palmerston North and Wellington before a final move to Thames where he completed 27 years as branch Manager before retirement to Ashburton.

While in Thames Errol was a JP who sat in judgement in the Thames Court. In this capacity he was once given a tour of the nearby Waikeria Prison. Established in 1911 on 3000 acres of rolling hill country, it is largely self-sufficient. Errol was impressed with the varied rehabilitation programs offered the inmates and the dedication of the prison officers.

Ken Borland thanked our main speaker and President Barry then closed the meeting with a reminder that transport was available for those wishing to join the group for lunch at “The Stables” restaurant.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club President Val Johnson presided over the July meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club held recently. Members were welcomed and the National Anthem was sung. Members had a moments silence for the passing of a member, Dot McIntosh. Birthdays and Anniversaries were celebrated. T rips Convenor Avis Kingsland told of trips coming up, particularly the overnight trip to Kaikoura in September. There is an Area Luncheon on September 21. The Raffles were drawn. The Mini Speaker was Errol Kingsbury, the Area Representative. He explained that his role is to assist Clubs. Errol has been in Ashburton for three years, he came from Thames. He was 40 years in the North Island. He has an interest in genealogy, one of his ancestors came out to New Zealand on the Charlotte Jane. In those days they were long journeys.

After leaving school he worked in a grocery shop,

sticks behind their back and through their elbows to help get their posture right! To finish off and put their newly acquired skills to the test they went for a walk around the township.

Selecting the junior team must have been quite a headache for the selectors with Jacob Kilworth, Mitchell Taylor, and Jacob Swan also pressing for inclusion.

To be frank, from my position, there are a number of other juniors who are worthy of consideration. A headache for the selectors, but a great problem to have for the combined clubs.

Training for this competition started this week with very promising scores being recorded. The team members are grateful for the co-operation of other club members in having rounds on club night designated as team training. I have already reported on the members taking part in the Inter-Island match and the, hoped for, selection to shoot in the New Zealand team.

Attention now focuses on the upcoming Phoenix club championship to be held on September 1. This is a unique match in that it is for Junior and school teams only. Junior in our sport is anyone under the age of 21 years and school is, obviously, any shooter currently enrolled at a primary, Intermediate or Secondary school. Interest in this championship has been shown by schools in the North Island as well as many in the South Island. We look forward to hosting this match.

The relationship between our combined clubs and the Ashburton College is well known and long standing and will be highlighted in this competition.

Warriors great Mannering to retire

By Dale BuDge When Simon Mannering retires at the end of the 2018 season he will do so as the greatest player in Warriors history.

There have been several superb players call Mt Smart their home – others may opt for Stacey Jones or Ruben Wiki as the greatest Warrior – but Mannering stands on top.

There won’t be the brilliant line breaks or bone-crunching hits that Jones or Wiki had on their career highlights reel, but what Mannering has brought to the club has been equally important.

He has been the consummate professional; the player willing to go that extra mile to get the job done; and in many ways the most easily identifiable Warriors player for much of his career.

That career has seen many highlights – particularly in the early part of it when the club was a regular finals contender and when the Kiwis enjoyed unprecedented success. There have also been dark days – the run of six successive years of the club missing the NRL playoffs.

Mannering was captain of the side for much of that time and was the one person who had to be accountable for an under-performing club even when he was churn-

ing out quality individual displays each week.

Mannering has never been one to seek attention. He has never wanted to be a headline maker and never found it easy to accept praise. I could probably write whatever I wanted to in this column because I doubt he’d ever read it.

It’s unlikely there will ever be a desire to take a role working in the media once his playing days are finished – it just isn’t who Simon Mannering is.

If there were problems – of which there were many – or if he was unfairly criticised he just bit his lip and kept that behind closed doors. You could never accuse Mannering of being a leak at Warriors headquarters.

Should he get injured or suspended between now and the end of the season and he finish on 299 career games he would sail off into the sunset just as satisfied as if he’d hit the 300 mark.

But here’s the thing that Mannering has never quite understood. Reaching those milestones and all the fanfare that comes with it isn’t that big a deal for him, but it is for those around him. It is for the supporters of the club and the club itself.

He is universally respected and

loved and it will be hugely important for those that have watched him over the years to see him go out the way a champion should.

He deserves a premiership as

much as the fans of the Warriors deserve one.

The 31-year-old forward and former club captain formally announced his decision yesterday

at a press converence at the Warriors’ Mt Smart headquarters.

He will make his 294th club appearance in Sunday’s home game against Melbourne.

In brief McCartney sets record Kiwi pole vault star Eliza McCartney is keeping athletics statisticians busy, after clearing yet another personal best of 4.94m at a pole vault meeting in Germany.

Surpassing her previous national mark of 4.92m, the 21-year-old’s effort was recorded as the highest women’s vault this year, beating American indoor world record holder Jenn Suhr’s 4.93m. Taking out the competition, McCartney set a new New Zealand national record, Oceania record, and Commonwealth record.

Polish keeper signed Wellington Phoenix coach Mark Rudan has continued to build from the back with confirmation of Polish goalkeeper Filip Kurto as his second player signing. A week after welcoming veteran English defender Steven Taylor to the A-League, Rudan has snapped up the former Poland youth team player from Dutch club Roda JC. The 27-year-old has been hailed as potentially one of the best glovemen in the league by Rudan, who has kept an eye on his career in Europe. Kurto played 108 games in the top-flight Eredivisie for Roda JC from 2012-14.

Strongest field ever on court

A field littered with strong, quality players should make this weekend’s Ashburton Squash Open one of the best in recent years, organisers say.

The Ashburton Squash Club’s annual tournament will begin tonight with some local games being played, before hitting full gear tomorrow night and continuing all day Saturday.

The club’s president Alastair White said the quality of the squash that had been played during the Squash Midlands circuit this season, where each club hosted their own tournament, had helped to attract what was, on paper, the best field Ashburton had seen in a long time.

“It’s probably the strongest draw we have ever had,” he said.

“We’ve got 80 players and an exceptionally strong draw. We’ve got a lot coming down from Christchurch as well as our own local players so it’s going to be a really good one.

“This is the most we could take if we solely hosted it at Ashburton. If we had any more we would have had to ask another club if we could play some games there.”

Headlining the men’s open grade are Christchurch players Matt Smith, Nathan Coll, Simon Slade, Ben Coll and Nathan Smith – but Ashburton’s sole open grade contender Steve Leckie will be out to give them a run for their money.

Slade had picked up a num-

ber of the titles on offer around the Midlands district in recent weeks, and Leckie had come runner up to him in some of those tournaments, including at both the Methven and Rakaia tournaments.

Timaru’s Jordan Tiplady and Cromwell’s Caleb Madden round out the top eight seedings.

The men’s A grade is also likely to be hard-fought affair, with Sam Shearer one of the home club’s leading contenders there.

Three women’s draws will also be contested this weekend – with two draws of eight and one of six; Katrina Palmer is the player to beat. Palmer moved to Ashburton about 18 months ago and has been regularly playing in the men’s grade, but will contest the

women’s title in the tournament at her new home club.

She is top seed in the main women’s draw, which also included Ashburton’s Aleisha Stoddart, Karlie McQueen, Julie Smith and Casey Howat.

Some local games will be played tonight to give organisers a head start, before the tournament really gets going at 5.30pm tomorrow night. Play will go through until about 9.30pm and restart again at 8am on Saturday, with the lower grade finals to be played throughout the afternoon, culminating in the open grade final around 6.30pm.

“If people want to watch good squash, they should definitely come down and have a look,” White said.

Tough lessons for Mid Canty at U17 nationals A couple of hard netball lessons meant the Mid Canterbury under-17 team headed into yesterday’s third day of the Netball New Zealand Under-17 Championships knowing the best they could finish was 33rd.

The team had headed north with hopes of finishing a good 10 places higher than they will end up and coach Sarah Lassen said they’d had three good wins, but also a couple of hard losses which had pushed them down the standings.

Mid Canterbury started the

week in pool E and beat Thames Valley narrowly 36-35, and Horowhenua 44-27.

They finished day one with a 32-17 loss to South Canterbury, which put them second in their pool at the end of the first day’s play.

Day two started with a 45-20 loss to Auckland 2, and was followed by a 37-25 loss to North Harbour 2, which put Mid Canterbury in the lower half of the draw.

Yesterday morning they beat Hutt Valley B Green 35-22 in

the tournament’s lower section play-offs, before going down to Gisborne 28-25, leaving them to play-off for 37th place as the competition winds up today.

North Otago were the only surprise team to reach the main play-offs as the big centres flexed their muscles over the first two days.

The southerners progressed to the knock-out stage after finishing second behind Taranaki in pool D. They beat Christchurch 31-27 in a hard-fought match showing

their desire to make the top 16 of the 42-strong field.

Both teams suffered losses to pool winners Taranaki but showed dominance over the other teams on Tuesday before meeting in afternoon play to determine which side progressed.

North Otago’s win pitted them against Auckland 2 as championship play moved into must-win phase yesterday.

The age-group semi-finals would be played today with the grand final whistles to be blown at 2.45pm.

Arthur hails Hayne Parramatta coach Brad Arthur has hailed Jarryd Hayne as a difference-maker and says their 2018 NRL season would have been more dire if it wasn’t for the star’s presence. A fit and rejuvenated Hayne signalled he still has plenty to offer after turning in his best performance in years in last week’s error-riddled loss to Newcastle.

Hayne chalked up a massive 189 metres, 14 tackle busts and was the spark behind two of the Eels’ three tries. The former NSW and Australian outside back is offcontract at the end of the year but the code-hopping star has repeatedly stated he won’t address his future until the conclusion of the season.

Big Bash expands For the first time, all teams will play each other home and away in the upcoming eighth season of cricket’s Big Bash League.

The expanded BBL season will feature 59 matches – up from 43 last season – across 61 days. The season will start with the Brisbane Heat playing Adelaide Strikers at the Gabba on Wednesday, December 19, and will finish later than previously in mid- February.

The season will move into February with more family-friendly time slots.

First solo rower dies Colin Quincey, the first person to row solo across the Tasman Sea, has passed away in Northland, aged 73. Quincey, a longtime smoker, died of lung cancer at Kawakawa Hospital, having spent the past five years living in Paihia where he would row a small boat, and volunteer at the Citizens Advice Bureau. In 1977, the 32-year-old Quincey was down to his last day of food when he crashlanded in the dark on the Sunshine Coast, 63 days after leaving the Hokianga Harbour in the open wooden Yorkshire dory he had built.

Law student keeps players in line

When Wellington took on Canterbury in the final of hockey’s national under-18 association tournament last week, a former Ashburton man was sideline making the tough calls and ensuring the rules were adhered to.

After a strong showing with the whistle throughout the tournament at North Harbour, Ashley Kelland was picked as one of the two umpires to control the tournament’s feature game, which was won by Wellington, 1-0.

For Kelland, who attended Ashburton College but moved to Christchurch at the beginning of last year to study law, it was one of the biggest umpiring opportunities that had come his way so far and was hopeful it would be a stepping stone to bigger and better things.

He said it was hard to know what the future held, but in hockey there were options aplenty.

World Cups, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games were options one day, but for now Kelland is just taking it one step at a time and with the under-18 tournament done he has turned his attention back to the final few weeks of the Christchurch club hockey season.

Kelland took up umpiring about six years ago. He used to play hockey too and was a member of the Ashburton College First XI when he was at school but gave away the playing side of the sport when he started at university because it would have been too much on top of studying and umpiring.

He umpires at least two or three times most weeks, officiating in division one, secondary school, junior men’s and the occasional premier grade game.

“I wasn’t a great player but sometimes I miss it, but then I think I wouldn’t stop umpiring to play again,” Kelland said.

Being an umpire or a referee in any sport isn’t always the easiest

PHOTO SUPPLIED job. If you get a call wrong, you hear about it, and often the umpire becomes the scapegoat for players, coaches and supporters.

For Kelland though, that was just part of the job and the more experienced he got, the better equipped he was at dealing with that side of it.

“You can get some very passionate players, that would be a good way to describe it, especially in the high intensity games or the school games, they can be quite intense,” Kelland said.

Coaches and supporters could also get a bit excited and throw a

few words in an umpire’s direction.

“I think you need to have a thick-ish skin. You have to ignore some stuff but besides that you don’t have to have a certain kind of personality to be a hockey umpire,” he said.

“You can be quite chilled and relaxed and go out there and have fun, or you can be strict and serious, you just can’t let what people say get to you. I think the more you get used to it, the more you are able to ignore it and the better you manage it.”

The next big test for Kelland

will come in Tauranga in a couple of months’ time. He’s been asked back to umpire at his second Rankin Cup, the top secondary school tournament in New Zealand.

Last year, at his first Rankin Cup, Kelland said he didn’t fare so well, but an umpire development official who watched him at the under-18 tournament last week told him he was impressed with how far he’d come.

So Kelland is hopeful when the Rankin Cup hits itsfinal stages this year, he’ll be in the mix for some of the big games.

Last week’s association under-18 tournament was effectively the second-tier national tournament, and ahead of that was the regional tournament which was held in Dunedin and featured the country’s eight main regions.

Next year, Kelland hopes he’ll be making the step up to that tournament, and from there he has his sights set on possible roles at under-21s and even the National Hockey League (NHL).

“But it’s quite competitive, so I don’t know how far I’ll go. If I get all the way to the NHL, then I guess I get to the NHL,” he said.

Why did Jordie Barrett say no to longer contract?

If it was understandable that Ardie Savea chose to only extend his contract by one year this week, it is more of a mystery as to why Jordie Barrett has made the same short term move.

His star shines as brightly as ever from an All Blacks’ perspective and while he didn’t start in the third test against France after being picked at fullback in the first two, he remains an integral part of the national side’s back three mix.

Unless he suffers a spectacular collapse in form, he’s likely to be either on the bench or starting at fullback for the All Blacks through to the World Cup. Regardless of what happens with the coaching set up after the tournament, it would be staggering if Barrett, who is still only 21,

isn’t considered a vital part of the All Blacks’ longer term future.

Which begs the question – if his test future is relatively certain and he loves playing for the Hurricanes, why not make a longer commitment? Why only sign for one year?

Conspiracies have been stoked on the back of this decision, with two main theories surfacing.

The first is that he is leaving his options open to attract offshore suitors as he’s seriously considering shifting overseas after the World Cup. The other is that he’s becoming increasingly frustrated at being used and widely seen as a fullback when in fact his natural and preferred position is second-five.

That’s where he played much

of his school rugby and where he featured for the New Zealand Under-20 team.

Has he, therefore, held off making a longer term commitment with the Hurricanes because he’s determined to play at No. 12 after the World Cup and can’t be sure they are the club where he could do that? These aren’t outlandish ideas but they are not thought to be factors behind his decision to only nudge his contract out by 12 months.

The truth is less sinister with a more practical foundation driving it. New Zealand Rugby wanted Barrett to make a long term commitment.

They are believed to have offered him a five-year deal, the value of which was based on the

fact he’s a 21-year-old, with four test caps and in his second Super Rugby campaign.

At the moment he’s a promising but largely unproven, probable regular in the All Blacks match day 23.

But where will he be in the overall scheme of things in 2020 after the World Cup. By then, he might have played 20 tests and proven without doubt he’s an incredibly calm, disciplined and versatile footballer who can play across the backline and kick goals.

Not only that, but by 2020 Ben Smith may have moved on. Waisake Naholo might have moved on by then, as well. So too Ryan Crotty, possibly Sonny Bill Williams will have retired and postWorld Cup Barrett will most likely

be a definite starter either at fullback or even at second-five.

His value to the All Blacks could be considerably higher. And that is highly likely to be the reason Barrett has only signed for one more year.

It would have been a crazy move for him to have locked himself into a long term contract now when he is probably going to be worth significantly more in 12 months.

That will be the time for him to re-negotiate and make a longer commitment to NZR and the Hurricanes.

And it most likely will be the Hurricanes where he remains for he has made it clear he can’t envision himself ever playing for anyone else in Super Rugby.

“She’s a lovely filly and the 800m may be a bit sharp for her, but she’s one that you can definitely follow in the new season,” Auret said.

Posh Porotene is by Savabeel and a grand-daughter of the Gr.1 Levin Classic (1600m) winner Porotene Gem. “I really liked her trial win at Waverley and she’s improved since then,” Auret said.

Dratini is a colt with a rich pedigree and the looks to go with it.

The son of All Too Hard and the multiple Group One winner Dorabella has also indicated he’s inherited his share of the family ability.

The covers will come off Dratini when he debuts in the Carrfields Livestock/Carrfields Primary Wool 1200m at Hawke’s Bay today and trainer Fraser Auret expects a bold showing.

“He’s a very forward sort of colt and 1200m will suit him,” he said in reference to taking on the older horses, rather than running in the 800m juvenile event on the card.

“He’s a beautiful animal who is owned in Hong Kong and we’re very fortunate to have him.”

Dratini is owned by Dynasty Racing, who are managed by New Zealand-based bloodstock agent Paul Beamish and have 10 horses with Auret.

Cup plan mapped out A Gr.1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) programme for Ladies First has been announced by trainer Allan Sharrock. Five lead-up races are planned to have the Gr.1 Auckland Cup (3200m) winner at her peak for the Flemington two-miler.

“She’ll run in an open sprint at Otaki and then the open mile race on the same day as the Makfi,” Sharrock said. “Safely through that, it will be the open 2000m at Hastings and then I think she’ll be competitive in the Livamol Classic.

Praise for apprentice Graeme Rogerson believes apprentice Ryan Elliot’s career can go to another level next season.

“He’s very under-rated and hopefully come the spring he will ride his first Group One winner, he’ll be on some very good horses for the stable,” he said. Elliot also showed his versatility at Te Aroha on Wednesday when he won the Patron Paddy’s Hurdle (3100m) on the stable runner Suffice To Say. “He’s fearless,” Rogerson said.

Barron not giving it up yet Clark Barron’s number of drives in a season dropped to double figures for the first time ever last term and his tally of New Zealand driving wins increased by only one, to 1037, but the Rakauhauka reinsman is not ready to give it away altogether just yet.

The sudden decrease was the result of Barron’s desire to concentrate more on his training and of his 18 wins, Somejoy at Ascot Park in January was the only one he drove himself.

Blair Orange contributed 13, Barron’s daughter Ellie three, and Jim Curtin one.

“I’d thought about not renewing my licence but decided it would be silly when Blair or Ellie had other drives not to be able to step up,” he said, “Ellie’s finished her physio work and is full time here now, she’s keen enough to drive more and as long as she keeps performing she should get them.

“She’s had an extra good year; she only started driving in October and has had eight wins.”

Jumping suits Lad Banbury Lad has made an instant impact in his new role.

The five-time winner on the flat made a successful jumping debut at Te Aroha yesterday with a dashing front-running victory in The Dentist Morrinsville Hurdle (3100m). “He’s showed plenty of promise and he’s a big, bold jumper,” trainer Rudy Liefting said.

“He’s a bit of a thinker and I’ve been hoping hurdling would keep him entertained and it looks like it has.”

Ellie’s first winning drive, were at the top of his season’s highlights.

“Somejoy goes to Art Major this spring, her half-brother by Mach Three will go to the sales and Miracle Lodge will have three in,” said Barron, referring to the breeding operation he runs in partnership with Eric Parr of Ashburton.

On the training front, Black Ops provided Barron with his final win of the season at Ascot

Park in May. He pointed out he usually closes up shop at the end of the Southland season and hasn’t raced at Forbury Park during the winter for quite a while.

However, he has had a winter team in work since May 1 and, while enjoying a brief break away in Sydney recently with wife Jackie, Ellie and Woodlands pensioner and retired horse float operator Art Bloxham continued to

work a team of 16.

“Black Ops is the only racewinner amongst them.

“Raksbet is the only other winner to come back, that will be in August.

“A lot of my better horses have been sold. Some Excusesomewhere went to Mark Jones, either for Menangle or sale. He tried him on the beach, came solid so he’s been sold too.”

Outstanding Wanganui jumper Sea King will attempt to complete a hat-trick of Mosstrooper Steeplechase (3600m) victories at Bendigo on Sunday. The rising 13-year-old has been sent to Australia by trainer Kevin Myers for his fifth consecutive winter campaign and joined Patrick Payne’s Victorian stable last week.

“It’s great to see him back here and to me he feels exactly the same to what he has in the past years,” Payne said. “He’s an unbelievable horse.” Sea King’s winning run in Australia began in 2014 when he took the Lafferty Hurdle (3200m) and Grand National Hurdle (4500m).

With their second season looming large, Mid Canterbury’s newest rugby league team has put the call out for players.

The Chertsey Oilers made their debut in last year’s Aoraki competition and although they didn’t officially pick up a win on the field, they did get some points on the table due to a default. Their first season was deemed a success and they are hopeful of an even better

showing in 2018.

Glenn Jamieson was the man who got the Chertsey Oilers off the ground last season. A former league player himself, Jamieson was determined to see the sport he loved continue to grow in Mid Canterbury, so launched a bid to form a second team.

Timaru had the Outlaws and the Cowboys, which were effectively a city and a country team, so he decided to try and form a country-based side in Mid Can-

terbury to play alongside the two Timaru-based teams and the Ashburton Barbarians, and decided on Chertsey as a base.

With the Aoraki competition taking place in September, last year he put the call out to rugby players who might be keen to give league a try once they’d finished with rugby for the season, and people answered.

This year was also looking promising, Jamieson said.

“There’s been a bit of interest so

I think player-wise we should be good for numbers,” Jamieson said.

A lot of last year’s players had indicated they’d be back for another season, while a number of new names had also cropped up, Jamieson said.

The Outlaws won the competition in 2017 and with a season under their belts now, the Oilers are hoping to give the other three teams a run for their money this year.

donned Oilers colours last year had definitely shown they had talent, Jamieson said. They had gone on to train as part of the Aoraki Eels representative side, giving them a shot at representing Aoraki at the provincial tournament later this season too.
