Mt Hutt skier Scott Higgins wants to remind others not to ski in closed areas after he had his season pass confiscated for a week. The 20-year-old from Christchurch was among the 4000 snow bunnies who flocked to Mt Hutt on Saturday. Enticed by the fresh powder conditions, he succumbed to temptation and ventured into Mid Towers around 9am, despite closed signs. He saw others in the area, but unbeknown to him avalanche heli-bombing was still under way. After a few turns a ski patroller ap-
proached him and confiscated his lift pass and asked him if he had not heard the blast of avalanche control work above him. He had headphones in and had not heard it, but understood straight away the dangers of being in the area. “It was completely legit what they did,” Higgins said yesterday. The worst case scenario in such a situation could see him and others in the closed area buried in an avalanche, and then have to be rescued. The Mid Towers run was opened shortly afterwards, once avalanche control work was completed. Higgins wanted to remind others to
obey closure signs and is looking forward to skiing back on Mt Hutt when his seven-day ban is completed. He said at first he thought he was going to get banned for two weeks, but management had responded to his good attitude and made it just one week. He believed there would have been others banned on the day as well, because he saw one or two other skiers approached by ski patrollers. Mt Hutt manager James McKenzie said management took into consideration a skier’s attitude when deciding the length of bans and it was important skiers obeyed skifield signage.
