Rentals rise $30 a week last year

The cost of renting a home in the Ashburton District shot up by almost $30 a week last year.

Trade Me figures show that the median rent for properties listed on its website was $322.50 a week in January; by December this had risen to $350. In December 2015, the median was $337.

And the rental pain could get worse, says Trade Me property head Nigel Jeffries. He anticipates the upward movement will continue into 2017, with many tenancies traditionally coming up for review at the start of the year..

Ashburton renters, however, see less of their pay disappearing in rent than in many parts of the country, with the national median rental now $450 a week.

Economics monitor Infometrics puts the median individual income for people living in the Ashburton District at $49,700. With the median annual rental $17,524, renters are paying about 32 per cent of their gross income in rent.

The Trade Me experience, however, is not reflected in the marketplace says one landlord.

He owns several properties and says his rentals have moved only marginally over the past year; some have dropped.

Most of his properties are let to longterm tenants and he believes that is a good trade-off for charging rents that are a little lower.

“It’s a balancing act, but yes, we do look after our tenants, it’s something we can

Website Real Estate New Zealand currently has 56 rental properties listed across the Ashburton District.

Statistics released yesterday by the REINZ show that while rentals might be rising, house prices are static. The median sales price in December was $330,000, up $4000 on November and up just $2.500 on December 2015.

The 49 houses that sold took an average of 31 days to find a buyer.

Quake-hit farmers offered temporary housing Farmers with damaged homes from the Kaikoura earthquake will be able to apply to buy temporary housing units at a discounted rate.

The twenty units are currently at the Rawhiti Domain in Christchurch.

Building and Construction Minister Dr Nick Smith said there were farmers in the Hurunui, Kai-

koura and Marlborough districts with badly damaged homes following the November 14 earthquake. “[They] need alternative accommodation while their homes are repaired, but practically need to stay on the land.

“The option of relocating the temporary housing now surplus from the Christchurch earth-

quake recovery is an additional option that will provide a workable solution for some.”

The movable homes will be sold to farmers for their residual book value of $24,510, which Smith said was a significant discount on their market value.

The farmers will also have to cover the cost of relocation, connection of services and will need

to obtain consents from their local council.

Smith said the number of farmers who could benefit from the temporary accommodation is 18 in the Hurunui district, five in Kaikoura and five in Marlborough, “although the economic viability of relocating the homes to Marlborough through the Lewis Pass may not be viable”.

Two men have been charged following an incident at Napier McDonald’s in which a man suffered knife wounds. A 19-yearold Napier man has been charged with assault and possession of an offensive weapon following the incident last week. A second man has also been charged with assault and will appear in court next week.

One man suffered knife wounds during the incident and photos emerged on social media showing X-rays of a knife in his leg. “Police are disappointed that this occurred at a restaurant where several children were present at the time,’ said Constable Vicky Holden of the Hawkes Bay CIB. “This was a distressing incident for all those concerned.”

Christchurch accident A person was injured in a crash in Canterbury early yesterday, but the outcome could easily have been more tragic, police say. The driver of the vehicle, whose age and gender has not been revealed, was thrown from the car in the crash on Tram Road, West Eyreton.

They were not wearing a seat belt, police said yesterday. “Seat belts are there for a reason - to protect you,” police said. The driver was taken to Christchurch Hospital. St John said the driver was initially taken in a serious condition.

However, police said the driver had suffered moderate injuries. Senior Constable Tu Maaka said fatigue appeared to be a factor.

MetService sticks with weather forecast

Wild weather in a much-anticipated bomb low passed by Ashburton yesterday afternoon, but strong winds were still on the way, according to the MetService.

The weather system was due to hit Canterbury late afternoon, with gale force winds to set in north of the town.

However, Ashburton District Council emergency management officer Don Geddes said at about 4pm he had been keeping an eye on the public weather stations managed by the Mid South Canterbury Rural Fire Authority in the Rakaia Gorge, Ashburton Lakes, Mt Somers and Ashburton Airport.

And none of those were suggesting winds would get any higher

than 50 kilometres per hour for the next two days.

“They are all telling us pretty much the same thing,” Geddes said.

The MetService was sticking with its warnings however.

Meteorologist Claire Flynn said even south of Ashburton could get strong winds, with gusts of 110 kilometres per hour. This could set in when the wind turned around from a north-east to a north-west direction, anytime between late yesterday to late this morning.

Rakaia Gorge camping ground manager Di Murray said while last week winds had been strong in the gorge, yesterday was “reasonably calm”.

“We get very strong winds here on the best of days,” she said.

Mt Hutt Ski Area was also eerily quiet.

General manager of operations James Urquhart said he had been ready to update the company’s social media pages with high wind readings yesterday, but as it turned out by 5pm it remained “dead calm” in Methven and very little wind on Mt Hutt.

“We were expecting a little bit of wind. Everybody is talking about it throughout the country, about the weather low,” he said.

As well as the strong winds, river levels are expected to rise following heavy rain in the headwaters.

However, this had not occurred by 4.30pm yesterday at the gorge, with the river having only dirtied up and risen “a wee bit”, Murray said.

101 blood donations since 1975 Ashburton woman Mary Morris notched up her 101st donation with the New Zealand Blood Service yesterday.

After donating regularly since 1975, the 70-year-old was thanked with a certificate and gift of a framed painting at the Ashburton Club & MSA. But donating has become such a normal part of her life, for so long, she didn’t really see what all the fuss was about.

Starting casually in Christchurch by going along to donate with work colleagues, Morris soon became a permanent donor, continuing after moving to Ashburton in 2014.

“You don’t do it for the glory, you do it because you want to do it and hopefully you don’t have to have it (transfusions),” she said.

“What’s an hour out of your time to help someone else?”

Also contributing yesterday was long-term donor Doug Smith who

reached his 80th donation.

He first began donating years ago in Zimbabwe, when he was an apprentice at the airways, and

made 50 donations in Zimbabwe before coming to New Zealand.

He said the very first time he gave blood back when he was an apprentice, he used his left arm and was only able to half-fill the bag. Since then, he has stuck to using his right arm and says that his right arm always works perfectly.

The New Zealand Blood Service needs 3000 donations each week to meet hospital needs, with fewer than four per cent of us currently rolling up our sleeves to offer blood.

The next Ashburton mobile blood drive is another two-day mobile in April. It will be held at the Ashburton Club & MSA on April 19 (2-6pm) and April 20 (11.30am-3.30pm).

Addams Family actors needed

Variety Theatre Ashburton producers are confident of filling roles in their upcoming production of The Addams Family, but need more people to come on board.

Production manager Dianne Favel said the standard of talent at vocal and dance workshops last weekend was high, and there was no doubt the lead roles would be well cast.

However, altogether about 26 people were needed, including for the lead roles of Gomez and Morticia Addams, their two children Wednesday and Pugsley, as well as Uncle Fester, Lurch the butler, Wednesday’s boyfriend Lucas Beineke and his parents Mal and Alice Beineke.

The age range of actors was from the early 30s to late 50s for Gomez, late 20s to late 40s for Morticia, 18 to mid 20s for Wednesday, and 10 to 13 years for Pugsley.

“There was some strong singing

voices and good dancing ability from those who were there,” Favel said of the workshops.

She hoped more would come along to auditions, to be held this Saturday in the Variety Theatre rooms from 10am. Anyone seeking a lead role would need to make an appointment with Faye Johnstone, phone 308-8279.

The Variety Theatre has appointed director Regan Jackson of Christchurch, well known in Ashburton for bringing Chicago to the stage in 2014. He will work alongside musical director Ella Thomas, who has previously directed shows in her home town of Timaru, and choreographer Jessie Thomson, making a return after wowing audiences in last year’s Oliver.

Jackson said he was excited to be involved in the “hilarious and witty” Broadway musical of The Addams Family.

Site found for Methven skate park

There is renewed enthusiasm in Methven for a skate park following identification of a new site.

Kidzmethven has been planning to install a skate park in the town for many years, and in 2012 Chorus-owned land near the Methven Railway Reserve was confirmed.

However, despite Chorus being prepared to offer the land for lease, there were murmurings from neighbours that it might not be the best location.

Kidzmethven member Liz McMillan said this week that due to a licensed premises alongside, it was no longer considered ideal.

She said she and other Kidzmethven members decided to give the project one last shot late last year, and held a meeting, to which about 15 people turned up. They then did a survey, and have been impressed with the enthusiasm in the community, particularly around the suggestion of a new site, at the corner of Bank Street and McMillan Street.

There were 158 responses to the survey, with the majority of respondents being aged 18 to 34.

Ninety-three per cent said the town needed a skate park, and just under 70 per cent thought the corner of Bank and McMillan

Street was the best site.

Kidzmethven has almost $20,000 to contribute to the project, which has an unknown cost at this stage. The organisation is in the process of becoming an incorporated society so it can apply for grants.

McMillan said Kidsmethven now intended to apply for a license to occupy, and aspects of concept plans drawn up for the previous site could be utilised in the new park.

She was heartened by the renewed support, and many people had great ideas as to how they would like the park to look.

“It’s been a hard road because we thought that Chorus land was ideal, we waited for five years to get that sorted out, and then basically just kept coming up against brick walls,” she said.

The Bank Street land is zoned Open Space A under the council’s district plan, which means there are restrictions on its use. A resource consent would have to be sought for anything other than playground equipment. A skate park could fall under the definition of playground equipment, depending on its specifications.

Council commercial manager Colin Windleborn said council did not currently have plans for the land.

Cyclist dies in Gisborne crash A male cyclist died in a crash involving a truck on Awapuni Rd near the Gisborne speedway yesterday.

State Highway 35 was closed for three hours after the 9am crash.

The cyclist died at the scene.

A motorist who passed the

crash soon after it happened, told the Gisborne Herald he was in shock from what he saw.

Family of the dead man also arrived at the scene.

The serious crash unit is investigating.

Painting programme for Ashburton Artist Katrina McGettigan has been bringing some artistic teaching to children in Mid Canterbury these holidays. McGettigan has been running a painting holiday programme for around a year in Christchurch and has brought it down to Ashburton for the first time. The students will be getting step-by-step instruction on how to paint a variety of landscapes using various techniques. The courses run for two and a half hours and are suitable for children aged 5-14.

MPs visit Pike River protest Leader of the Opposition Andrew Little visited the Pike River families yesterday at the picket line, just hours after Green Party MP Denise Roche.

Little’s visit comes just three days after Winston Peters was there.

The families have been protesting the sealing of the mine, and pushing for safe re-entry of the drift.

“I was asked to come down and I am here to support and give my allegiance to the families,” Little said.

Little has been involved with the families’ fight for justice since

day one when he was head of the miners’ union, the EPMU. He was most recently back for the sixth anniversary of the disaster.

He was welcomed by about 30 Pike supporters, who braved torrential rain.

Little has promised that a Labour Government would get an independent assessment of the mine, and re-enter it if it was declared safe.

In December, Peters said he would be willing to be among the first to enter the drift, and at the weekend stated “our party will make re-entry into Pike River a

bottom line at the next election”.

In other developments, Pike River survivor Daniel Rockhouse said the “re-entry is quite achievable and with the right gear and training, I’d like to be part of the team that re-enters the mine”.

Green Party workplace relations and safety spokeswoman Denise Roche were also at the picket line yesterday and said the mine should not be sealed.

The Government needed to look at all the reports about mine re-entry and fund an independent assessment of whether the mine drift could be re-entered safely.

Christmas elderly wishes 2016

Window washing can be a household task that can prove challenging the older one gets.

Because of this, Val Snowball’s hand was one of the first to shoot up at the 206 Club when she heard about the Christmas Wish campaign.

Marion Bartlett was more than happy to give Val a hand with her windows and popped down to give them a wash.

Marion herself had benefited from generosity in hard times through receiving a hand with housework so understood how fantastic it can make someone feel.

The windows were washed and big smiles were enjoyed at the end of the day for a job well done.

Strongman disaster recalled Greymouth funeral director Laurie Anisy was a trainee and just two weeks shy of his 17th birthday when he got word there had been an explosion at the Strongman Mine, with many dead.

Today is the 50th anniversary of the mine tragedy, and many hundreds of funerals later, Anisy says the events of January 19, 1967, will remain with him forever.

“I was a funeral director trainee and was working at Westland Funeral Services for Joe Pattinson and Jimmy Groom,” Anisy recalled.

“The phone was ringing and I remember vividly Joe came out of the office not long after, saying he had received a call from the mayor, Barry Dallas. He told us there had been an explosion out at the Strongman mine and it doesn’t sound very good - that was late Thursday morning. Late afternoon they started bringing the deceased to the hospital mortuary for identification.

“Soon after, Joe and the senior staff were bringing the deceased down to the premises and were preparing the bodies of the men and placing them in the caskets.

“That day is a day I will never forget but we just had to do it. I was flat out putting handles on as many caskets as I could - that was my role. I worked through to midnight and Joe, Jimmy and Archie

King worked through to 3am.”

Two bodies were put in caskets in the Tainui Street chapel while the others were taken to St Martins Hall, in Marlborough Street.

“We had to make up special stands. Every time I look at crosses they remind me of the crosses I made and put each of the men’s names on, front and back. It’s something that stays with me.”

It poured with rain on the day of the funerals.

The joint cortege, led by a fireman on a fire engine, made its way slowly to the Karoro Lawn Cemetery.

Behind the hearse carrying the casket of Noel Prescott, who was laid to rest with his father James, was the fire engine.

“The other men were in caskets on the back of council trucks and the skies just opened up, and there were truckloads of flowers,” Anisy said.

Ninety pallbearers travelled by bus to the cemetery.

“I recall the precision timing for the burial of the men. As Jim would walk up the ramp with six pallbearers, Joe would be walking down, and there were people gathered in the rain, all (oblivious to) the wet conditions.

“The Strongman mine disaster is a time I will never forget,” Anisy said.

A selfless act

he selfless act of donating blood to help someone in need is to be admired and celebrated.

Being poked and prodded and drained of a pint may not sound like the best way to spend an afternoon, but it certainly goes a long way to helping those in need.

I popped over to the Ashburton Club & MSA yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised to see a steady stream of people coming through the doors to donate, and a line-up of willing participants queuing in the foyer.

Some were nervously new to the game, and others, like Mary Morris and Doug Smith, were on their 101st and 80th donation respectively.

Often, if you look a little deeper, it’s a personal tragedy or experience that leads someone to donate.

Perhaps they’ve witnessed first-hand the helplessness of having a sick relative, or have seen the wonderful transformation in a recipient who has been given that potentially life-changing infusion.

Whatever the reason, every time the mobile blood donation unit rolls into town, it highlights a serious demand and drain on a service that requires 3000 donations each week to meet hospital demands.

Unless you’re faced with needing their services first-hand, this can often be a surprising and hidden statistic that may not immediately come to mind.

With each donation, a person can contribute to saving up to three lives, because blood is separated into three parts - red cells, platelets and plasma - at the Christchurch processing lab.

Nearly a third of the donated red cells are used by cancer patients.

Everyone has been touched by someone dealing with cancer, so all the more reason to jump on board and show your support in a practical manner.

If, however, you find yourself coming over all faint and squeamish, or the criteria prevents you from participating, have no fear.

Through talking with the team at the New Zealand Blood Donor Service, I learnt of the many other ways you can show your support.

From looking after the refreshments (and those all-important biscuits), distributing posters and advertising material, to coordinating and purely encouraging others to donate, you can help make a difference.

The next mobile unit is back in April, and I hope you feel inspired to head along, or help in some way.

You never know when you may find yourself indebted to a complete stranger who was kind enough to spend 10 minutes out of their day to donate blood.

Refugee camp bombed A Nigerian air force fighter jet on a mission against Boko Haram extremists mistakenly bombed a refugee camp yesterday, killing more than 100 refugees and aid workers and wounding 200, a government official and doctors said.

Military commander Maj. Gen. Lucky Irabor confirmed an accidental bombardment in the northeastern town of Rann, near the border with Cameroon, saying “some” civilians were killed.

It was believed to be the first time Nigeria’s military has acknowledged making such a mistake in a region where villagers have in the past reported civilian casualties in the neardaily bombings targeting the Islamic militants.

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari expressed deep sadness and regret at “this regrettable operational mistake”.

A Borno state government official, who was helping to co-ordinate the evacuation of wounded from the remote area by helicopters, said more than 100 refugees and aid workers were among the dead.

Doctors Without Borders said its team based in Rann counted at least 52 bodies and was treating 200 wounded, many in critical condition, and the death toll was expected to rise.

End of hunt for flight MH370 defended Australia’s Transport Minister Darren Chester said yesterday that experts will continue analysing data and scrutinising debris washing ashore from Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in a bid to narrow down where it crashed in the southern Indian Ocean.

But Chester declined to specify what kind of breakthrough would convince officials to resume the search for the missing airliner that was suspended this week after almost three years.

“When we get some information or data or a breakthrough that leads us to a specific location, the experts will know it when they see it,” he told reporters in the southern city of Melbourne.

The sonar seabed search ended on Tuesday, possibly forever – not because investigators have run out of leads, but because the countries involved in the expensive and vast deep-sea hunt have shown no appetite for opening another big phase.

“It is a costly exercise, but it hasn’t been the factor which led to the decision to suspend the search,” Chester said.

false hope to the families and friends. We need to have credible new evidence leading to a specific location before we would be reasonably considering future search efforts.”

The new 25,000-square kilometre area to the north was determined with the help of drift modelling by Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, which attempted to calculate where debris that has washed ashore on coastlines in the western Indian Ocean originated. Chester said that drift modelling would continue, and experts will scrutinise any further debris that washes up.

Investigators will also continue to refine the satellite data that led them to conclude the plane went down somewhere in the Indian Ocean.

Many relatives of those lost on the plane, which vanished on March 8, 2014, during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board, responded to the announcement that the search was over with outrage.

A support group, Voice 370, issued a statement saying that extending the search is “an inescapable duty owed to the flying public”.

Kidnapped sisters found Two sisters who disappeared from Rhode Island with their mother in 1985 have been located in the Houston area, and their mother was charged with snatching them, police announced yesterday.

An anonymous tip two days before Christmas led police to Kimberly and Kelly Yates and their mother, Elaine Yates, state police Lt. Col. Joseph Philbin said. Elaine Yates, who had been living in Houston under the name Liana Lynn Waldberg, was arrested and faces arraignment in Rhode Island.

Kelly Yates was 10 months old and her sister was 3 years old when they disappeared. Kelly Yates, now 32, and Kimberly Yates, now 35, weren’t living with their mother, who’s 69, but are in the Houston area and are in good health, Philbin said.

The girls’ father, Russell Yates, was told of the arrest immediately after it happened and is relieved, Philbin said. His contact information was given to his daughters.

“I’ve always been trying to find my children,” the father said.

Russell Yates told The Providence Journal in a 1988 magazine story his wife had discovered he had been unfaithful to her and had threatened to move out in the middle of the night with the children. He acknowledged punching her while they argued.

A few weeks later, on August 27, 1985, he came home after work around 2am and found them gone.

The case was featured on America’s Most Wanted, and police received tips from all over the country. Investigators reviewed the case and spoke with Russell Yates at least once a year, Philbin said. But it wasn’t until they received the anonymous tip that they cracked the case.

Authorities said they used court databases, Facebook and driver’s licence photos to identify the mother and daughters. He said they compared their photos

with baby photos to help identify them.

Court records show Elaine Yates legally changed her name in Texas seven years ago. The judge’s order includes her correct birthdate and maiden and married names.

It says the Texas Department of Public Safety had examined the petition and found she had no recorded criminal history. At the time, a felony warrant for child snatching issued in 1988 was outstanding in Rhode Island.

The name change order was filed August 26, 2009, 24 years to the day after she disappeared with her children.

Philbin said Yates had been successful in getting away with her crime for 31 years. He described her as being co-operative with investigators since police knocked on her door. She was arraigned in Houston, waived extradition and was being transported to Rhode Island.

Russell Yates, asked if Elaine Yates should be prosecuted, said: “That isn’t going to help me, her or anybody else at this point. I just want to see my kids.”

Obama cuts Manning’s term, grants clemency to hundreds

May outlines Brexit plans

President Barack Obama granted clemency to Chelsea Manning yesterday, allowing the transgender Army intelligence officer convicted of leaking more than 700,000 US documents to go free nearly three decades early.

Embracing his clemency powers days before leaving office, Obama also pardoned 64 individuals including retired Gen. James Cartwright, charged with making false statements during another leak probe.

Manning was one of 209 inmates with sentences commuted by Obama, who has now granted more commutations than any other president in history.

Neil Eggleston, Obama’s White House counsel, said the individuals would learn “that our nation is a forgiving nation, where hard work and a commitment to rehabilitation can lead to a second chance, and where wrongs from the past will not deprive an individual of the opportunity to move forward.”

Manning, Cartwright and Puerto Rican nationalist Oscar Lopez Rivera were the more prominent names on a list otherwise made up mostly of nonviolent drug offenders. The actions are permanent, and cannot be undone by Presidentelect Donald Trump.

With his last-minute clemency for Manning and Cartwright,

President Barack Obama commuted the sentence of Chelsea Manning, who leaked Army documents and is serving 35 years.

Obama appeared to be softening what has been a hard-line approach to prosecuting leakers.

Manning has been serving a 35-year sentence for leaking classified government and military documents to WikiLeaks, along with some battlefield video. She was convicted in military court of violating the Espionage Act and other offences and spent more than six years behind bars.

She asked Obama last November to commute her sentence to time served.

Her case has pitted LGBT rights activists, who warned about her mental health and treatment as a transgender woman living in a men’s prison, against national security hawks

who said she did devastating damage to US interests. The former cheered Obama’s move, while the latter called it an outrageous act that set a dangerous precedent.

Yet Obama did not grant a pardon to another prominent leaker, former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, whom the US has been unable to extradite from Russia. Snowden hasn’t formally applied for clemency, though his supporters have called for it. Yet the White House drew a distinction between the unapologetic Snowden and Manning, whom officials noted has expressed remorse and served several years already for her crime.

Britain’s future outside the European Union became much clearer yesterday: It’s so long to the single market, goodbye to the European Court of Justice and farewell to the freedom of movement for workers.

In a long-awaited speech, Prime Minister Theresa May finally revealed the UK’s hand as it prepares to start EU exit talks.

She said the UK wants to free itself from EU governance and stop paying millions into its coffers, but still remain friends, allies and tariff-free trading partners with the soon-to-be 27 nation bloc.

“We want to buy your goods and services, sell you ours, trade with you as freely as possible, and work with one another to make sure we are all safer, more secure and more prosperous through continued friendship,” May said in a speech to diplomats and dignitaries.

“You will still be welcome in this country as we hope our citizens will be welcome in yours,” she said.

Pro-Brexit British politicians praised the speech, and the pound rallied from recent lows as May provided more details of the path ahead for the split with the EU – and vowed that Britain would remain “a great global trading nation” open to business and talent from around the world.

In brief Trump sued A former contestant of reality show The Apprentice, who last year accused Donald Trump of sexual assault, is suing the President-elect for defamation.

Just two days before Trump will be sworn in the 45th president of the United States, Summer Zervos has filed the claim, stemming from an accusation Trump made about her and other women who accused him of sexual assault before November’s election. Zervos, who appeared on season five of the reality show with Trump, accused him of kissing and groping her at the Beverly Hills Hotel in 2007.

When she and a number of other women came forward, Trump said at a rally in Pennsylvania, “All of these liars will be sued after the election is over”. Trump has not sued, but Zervos has.

Suspect captured A suspect in the fatal shooting of an Orlando police officer was captured yesterday after a weeklong manhunt, authorities said.

The Orlando Police Department tweeted that 41-year-old Markeith Loyd was in custody, ending a manhunt that began with the January 9 fatal shooting of Lt. Debra Clayton outside a Wal-Mart store. Local television stations showed Loyd had a bloodied face when a half-dozen officers and deputies took him into police headquarters. Orlando Police Chief John Mina tweeted, “Captured and wearing Lt. Debra Clayton’s handcuffs.”

Mine caves in; 9 dead Nine people have been killed in the partial collapse of a coal mine in northern China. The staterun Xinhua News Agency said yesterday that the people killed were doing maintenance work inside the mine shaft at the time of the accident. Rescuers were able to save one person, who is now in stable condition at a hospital.

The cause of the accident on the outskirts of Shuozhou city in coalrich Shanxi province was under investigation. China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of coal.

Tackling credit card debt urged Kiwis are more likely to let their credit card payments slip in the first three months of the year leaving them exposed to higher interest costs and a bad credit score.

Research by Credit Simple has found between January and March 7.6 per cent of accounts are past due compared to 6.4 per cent annually.

While the percentage may seem low Reserve Bank figures show credit card balances typically peak in January after the post Christmas spend-up.

Last January Kiwis had $6.28 billion on their personal credit cards - the highest monthly outstanding balance for the whole of 2016.

Total credit card spending on both personal and business cards peaked at $6.7b in November. December figures are due out later this month.

Credit Simple chief executive David Scognamiglio said New Zealanders sometimes missed payments or paid bills late as they began to feel the effects of a Christmas debt hangover.

“The jump from 6.4 to 7.6 per

cent in overdue credit card repayments might not sound big, but in a nation with $6.6 billion outstanding on credit cards, that little extra interest-incurring period adds up to millions in extra interest payments for consumers.”

It can also damage a person’s credit score putting them at risk of not being able to borrow in the future or having to pay a higher interest rate.

Financial rating firm Canstar estimates Kiwis put around $36b on the plastic last year of which $22.9b would attract interest equating to more than $4b in interest payments.

Canstar general manager Jose George said it was important for consumers to make the right decisions about which credit cards they use.

“Credit card interest rates

currently range from 12.69 per cent to 25.99 per cent. Choose the wrong card and it could have a massive impact on how you can manage your daily finances.”

George said consumers needed to consider what kind of user they were when choosing a card.

Those who make a part payment or make the minimum balance payment should focus on low interest rate credit cards while those who use their credit card for emergencies should look at low or no fee cards.

People who pay off their credit card in full should also look at how much they are paying in annual fees and can take rewards into account.

George said if managing existing credit card debt was an issue it was a good time to look at the options and consider transferring a balance from an existing card to one with a more favourable rate.

“Be careful to check when and how the transferred balance will attract interest and as with paying off any debt, discipline in paying off the balance is key.”

Trump comment strengthens NZ dollar The New Zealand dollar rose to a month-high against the greenback after US presidentelect Donald Trump said the US currency was too high and fell against the pound after UK Prime Minister Theresa May said any exit from the European Union would be put to a parliamentary vote.

The kiwi rose to 72.02 US cents as at 8am yesterday in Wellington from 71.14 cents late Tuesday.

The local currency fell to 57.99 British pence from 59 pence Tuesday.

May outlined a 12-point plan to leave the EU while soothing financial markets by saying the Brexit would be voted on by both houses of the parliament and

would avoid any “cliff-edge for business or a threat to stability”.

The US dollar index sank to its lowest level in more than a month after the Wall Street Journal published excerpts from a weekend interview with Trump where he said the greenback’s strength against the Chinese yuan “is killing us”. The comments helped drive down the US dollar which had rallied in the wake of Trump’s election victory on optimism his policies would stoke economic growth.

“With a market that is heavily long USD, these sorts of comments do not inspire traders to hold onto that position,” said Jason Wong, currency strategist at Bank of New Zealand, in a note.

May’s speech reassured investors with comments that the UK would remain a good friend to the EU after making a clean break from the economic bloc, he said.

The trade-weighted index rose to 78.68 from 78.35 late Tuesday.

The GlobalDairyTrade auction overnight didn’t detract from a broadly stronger New Zealand dollar. The GDT price index rose 0.6 percent in the auction while whole milk powder slipped 0.1 percent to $US3,283 a tonne.

The kiwi rose to 95.25 Australian cents from 95.07 cents and gained to 4.9369 yuan from 4.9104 yuan. It advanced to 67.29 euro cents from 66.97 cents and traded at 81.22 yen from 81.13 yen Tuesday.

Liz Coutts new Skellerup chair Liz Coutts has taken over as chair of industrial rubber goods maker Skellerup Holdings, with Selwyn Cushing stepping down after 10 years in the role.

Coutts has been on the board since 2002 and chairs Skellerup’s audit and risk management committee. She is also chair of Oceania Healthcare, Ports of Auckland and fishing company Urwin & Co, and is a director of Ebos Group, Sanford, Yellow Pages and Tennis Auckland.

Cushing remains one of the company’s six directors and Skellerup’s largest shareholder, Coutts said.

In October last year, Skellerup said it expected annual profit to rise as much as 7 per cent to between $20 million and $22 million, recovering from the prior year’s decline, as it put greater emphasis on potable water applications and food safety.

Skellerup’s 2016 earnings were hit by a downturn in demand from its agricultural business, which provides rubber products to the dairy industry, as weak milk prices prompted the postponement of some spending.

The shares last traded at $1.55 and have gained 8.4 per cent in the past year.

the pan and leave it covered in the pan for 5 minutes – this will make for fluffy grains.

■ Meanwhile, place the eggs in a medium pan, cover with cold water. Bring to the boil over a moderate heat, then boil for 7 minutes. Remove the eggs from the heat, drain and rinse in cold water. Tap the shells all over, then peel away and discard.

Rinse the eggs then cut each into quarters.

■ Bring a medium pan of water to

the boil, add the broccoli florets and cook for 3 minutes, drain and rinse until cold in running water. Drain.

■ Toast the pumpkin seeds in a small pan, until they start popping. Empty them into a serving bowl, add the quinoa, broccoli, spring onions, tomatoes, parsley, oil, lemon and mix well.

Season to taste. Then gently stir through the hard-boiled eggs.

■ Serve with a little watercress salad (optional).

Blackgrass threat not over yet

Blackgrass was found on three Mid Canterbury properties and in miniscule amounts in a consignment of locally produced ryegrass seed last year, prompting calls for vigilance this summer.

The invasive, herbicide-resistant, weed is thought to have come into New Zealand in European grass seed and has the potential to decimate the district’s lucrative arable industry if it gained a foothold.

In March last year Federated Farmers was notified of the presence of three blackgrass seeds in a 63-tonne consignment of ryegrass grown in Mid Canterbury.

Tracing to date indicates the most likely source of the contamination is a consignment of contaminated ryegrass imported in 2007.

A surveillance and monitoring programme has been in place on a number of properties known to have received the contaminated seed. Blackgrass was detected growing at three of the properties under surveillance and the plants removed for destruction.

The location of the plants on the properties suggests that the spread is minimal and confined to limited areas, however Federated Farmers is encouraging the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI)

to continue the intensive surveillance and monitoring programme at these and other risk sites.

The latest finds are not connected with the 2013 spillage of contaminated seed between Methven and Ashburton.

Should blackgrass become established in New Zealand, its impact through reduced yields alone is estimated to cost the arable industry between $8.14 million and $82.4 million. This does not include any herbicide and machinery costs.

Fonterra milk production continues to decline

Fonterra’s milk production continues to decline, according to the co-operative’s latest Global Dairy Update.

From June to December, Fonterra collected 881 million kilograms of milksolids from its 10,500 farmer shareholders. This represented a 5.5 per cent drop over the same period in 2015, when 932 million kilograms was

collected. The North Island saw the largest fall, where volumes fell by 7.5 per cent to 553 million kilograms. The December collection in the North Island fell by 6 per cent to 111 million kilograms.

Fonterra’s South Island milk volumes dipped by 2.1 per cent for the seven months to December and 2.9 per cent for the month of December.

In total 334.8 million kilograms was collected, 75.2 million kilo-

grams in December.

The decline in production translated across the ditch, where 65 million kilograms was collected in the six months to December 31, representing a 7.6 per cent drop on the same period in 2015. December milk collection forged up 1 per cent on the same period last year.

Fonterra attributed the trend of falling milk production to adverse weather conditions.

Dairy product prices rise stems two straight drops Dairy product prices inched higher at the latest Global Dairy Trade auction, stemming two consecutive declines.

The GDT price index rose 0.6 per cent to $US3517, up from $US3463 at the previous auction two weeks ago. Some 22,030 tonnes of product was sold, edging lower from 22,396 tonnes at the previous auction.

Whole milk powder slipped 0.1 per cent to $US3283 a tonne.

“The results are indicative of the overall dairy market which is currently relatively balanced,” AgriHQ dairy analyst Susan Kilsby said in a note. “At present there is neither a shortage of dairy products or an excess of product available.

“This situation is likely to persist for the next few months during which time prices will most likely bob up and down from week to week,” Kilsby added.

At the latest GDT auction, rennet casein increased 4.9 per cent to $US6470 a tonne, while anhydrous milk fat rose 3.7 per cent to $US5528 a tonne.

Butter rose 1.6 per cent to $US4382 a tonne, while cheddar added 1.3 per cent to $US3940 a tonne.

However, butter milk powder sank 10.1 per cent to $US2783 a tonne, lactose fell 1.7 per cent to $US813 a tonne, while skim milk powder slid 1.6 per cent to $US2612 a tonne.

The New Zealand dollar last traded at 71.88 US cents at about 12.12pm in New York, compared with 71.03 US cents at 5pm in Wellington the previous day.

There were 113 winning bidders out of 178 participating at the 10-round auction.

The number of qualified bidders rose to 526, up from 523 at the previous auction.

North Canterbury irrigation company Hurunui Water Project is rejecting Greenpeace claims that the proposed scheme will lead to large-scale intensive dairying and consequent degradation of the Hurunui River.

“Greenpeace needs to actually read the latest information on the Hurunui Water Project (HWP) proposal that they have,” HWP chief executive Alex Adams said.

“If they had done so, they would have seen the scheme is very different now to the original proposal they seem to be referring to, and that dairy development as a result of the scheme is planned to be a minor component.”

Adams said a 2016 survey of HWP shareholders showed the vast majority of the dryland farmers simply wanted irrigation to provide the assurance they needed to continue with their existing farming practice; only some 10 per cent indicated that dairy conversions might be an option.

“Ironically Greenpeace’s failure to do any real homework on the current status of the scheme means they have put themselves in the position of opposing a scheme that actually contributes toward the longer-term responsible and environmentally sustainable farming practices they’re calling for.

“The current unreliability of water supply in the Hurunui district tends to pro-

mote a boom/bust cycle where too much water is drawn from the likes of local bores and streams when it is available to compensate for anticipated drier periods later on; a practice that we agree wastes water and can contribute to agricultural run-off.

“But because ours is a storage-based scheme, we can take water when the rivers are in good flows and use that for irrigation in the dry periods, reducing the direct demand on the rivers during lowflow periods.

“That is an environmental gain. HWP has never contemplated a run-of-river approach taking the Hurunui down to low flows. Our consents require periodic high flows for both environmental and recreational purposes.”

Adams said HWP has been granted consents with some of the most up-to-date and stringent environmental protections of any proposed scheme in the country.

The consents were developed following extensive public consultation in the zone committee process; there were no appeals against those conditions by any environmental advocacy group.

“Indeed,” he said, “under our current conditions, HWP simply cannot irrigate intensive dairying across the region and still comply with the nutrient loading limitations that the scheme must operate under.”

Sharks re-sign Barba

The Ashburton Colgate Athletics Competition team happy with their success in adverse conditions.

Cronulla are set to announce they have re-signed fullback Ben Barba, however it’s understood he may not be able to begin training with the defending NRL premiers for up to four months.

The Sharks were expected to make the announcement yesterday, however it will still require approval from NRL officials before the deal is registered.

For that to happen, the NRL will have to be convinced that Barba has been fully rehabilitated since copping a 12-game ban for his second positive test to illicit drugs in the space of a year, which ultimately led to him being released

by Cronulla in November.

Barba headed to Thailand for a four-week stint in a rehabilitation clinic following the ban, but his manager claimed at the time the stay was for an anxiety disorder, and not drug related.

Regardless of the outcome of the contract registration, it’s understood he may still be forced to wait until just before his anticipated June return date before he can train with the Cronulla team again.

The 27-year-old would also be on his final drugs warning, with a third breach likely to lead to contract termination as per the NRL’s illicit drug police.

Athletes bring home medals

Young Ashburton athletes have not let poor weather conditions stop them finding success and bringing home medals from the Colgate Games in Invercargill.

The 21 athletes brought home a large haul of medals and pennants. Athletes aged seven to

nine competed for pennants while those aged from 10 to 14 received medals.

The under ten age bracket claimed nine golds, nine silvers and three bronzes with the relay teams also claiming one gold and one silver.

Seven medals were won in the over 10 category, two gold, four

silver and one bronze.

Emma Becroft claimed gold in the 100m and silver in the high jump and Ella Pearson won two silvers in the 800m and 1500m.

Jake Jackways earned bronze in the 800m while Ben Holley and Callum Breen took a onetwo finish respectively in the

14-year-old boys’ race walk In addition to the medal haul, there were 13 top 10 finishes along with a close fourth place finish in the 13 year old medley relay.

Numerous personal bests were set in what was described as often horrid weather conditions.

CLUB NEWS Allenton Croquet Club Club President, Jill Cribb welcomed a good attendance of members to the monthly meeting of the club.

Good wishes were extended to Club Patron, Marion Cleland who is in hospital.

Club Captain, Barbara Field reported on up coming coaching for both Golf and Association Croquet at Waireka and reminded players it was more than time Club Championship matches were being played.

The Golf Croquet coaching with Sue Cleveland was very successful.

A new member was welcomed into the club.

There will be an Easter Raffle and selling dates are to be booked.

Next meeting Wednesday 8th February at 3.30pm.

Suspended over tactics leak Sale wing Tom Arscott has been suspended by his club over an alleged leak of information to Bristol that is being investigated by the Rugby Football Union.

The RFU is investigating a complaint made by Sale regarding the ‘passing of information to the opposition team’ ahead of the Aviva Premiership match against Bristol at the AJ Bell Stadium on New Year’s Day, which the hosts lost 24-23.

The probe is believed to centre on a meeting between Arscott and brother Luke – who plays for Bristol – on New Year’s Eve. Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond yestetrday revealed Tom has been suspended over the matter since January 4, and the north west club are now awaiting further news from the RFU. Diamond said: “We investigated it internally and we are going through a disciplinary, and under the regulations, we have to report it (to the RFU), so we did that yesterday. It’s now in the hands of the RFU. He is suspended.”

Bristol have released a statement saying they are aware of a complaint from Sale and “the club are confident of no wrongdoing in this matter”.

Paralympian Weir: Coach ‘threw wheelchair’ Paralympic icon David Weir has vowed never to compete for Britain again after it was claimed a female coach threw his $NZ5200 racing wheelchair across a room during a furious row.

The six-time champion branded British Athletics a ‘joke’ when he learned they had failed to uphold a complaint alleging Jenni Banks, head of the wheelchair racing programme, hurled his carbon fibre chair in anger after a bust-up at last summer’s Rio Paralympics.

There was already bad blood between the pair after Banks was appointed in 2013 ahead of Weir’s long-time coach Jenny Archer.

Weir will retire with his reputation as a legend of wheelchair racing intact but his relationship with the sport’s governing body British Athletics lies in tatters after what he views as a significant betrayal.

The 37-year-old earned the nickname Weirwolf for his ferocious competitive spirit on the

track but it seems he does not believe he has been afforded the respect by certain individuals that six Paralympic and six world titles demand.

The final blow landed via email this week when Weir learned a complaint that a female coach had hurled his custom-built racing chair across a room in anger had been dismissed.

Another athlete claimed to have witnessed Banks launch Weir’s carbon-fibre chair follow-

ing a furious row during the Rio Paralympics last summer.

A full investigation involving British Athletics’ human resources department ensued but the complaint was not upheld.

When Weir found out, he posted on Twitter, vowing never again to compete in an international vest. “I have been let down again,” he said. “Today is the day I officially retire from GB. I will never put a shirt on again. Thanks British Athletics, what a joke.”

Stan Wawrinka has continued his quest for a second Australian Open crown with a straight-sets second-round win over American Steve Johnson. The fourth seed’s 6-3 6-4 6-4 victory was far more routine than his desperate five-set comeback win on Monday night.

Phoenix into playoff spot “Can you do it on a windy Tuesday night in Wellington?”

For the Melbourne Victory, the answer is an emphatic no as the Wellington Phoenix claimed an excellent win over one of the ALeague’s heavyweights.

Their 3-0 triumph was completely deserved, and moved the club into the playoff spots for the first time this season.

Backing up from Saturday’s victory over Central Coast, Melbourne loomed as a much more dangerous opponent for the steadily improving Phoenix.

Though the Victory were riding a nine match unbeaten streak, the Nix had made a mini-resurgence of their own, having lost just one of their six games under new coaches Des Buckingham and Chris Greenacre.

Their progress was encapsulated in a performance that was a drastic reversal from the last time the two sides met, on Halloween, when the Victory battered the spooked Phoenix 6-1.

That result was a blight on a season in which the Phoenix have been largely competitive but rarely overwhelming. An improved defensive core has seen the Phoenix in their fair share of close contests, but a return of just 15 goals in 14 games limited their point accumulation.

It was a lack of production which belied the big-name attacking talent they had on offer, all players who had been produc-

tive in the past, but perhaps missing an incisive midfield presence to aid their efforts.

Those qualms were swept aside tonight in a dangerous display, where the Phoenix found continued success attacking down the flanks.

They promised plenty from within the first 30 seconds, when Kosta Barbarouses played a onetwo, receiving the return on his shoulder, and swivelling a shot goalbound.

Victory keeper Lawrence Thomas was equal to the task, but the early action turned out to be a signifier of what was to come.

The right flank was the busiest attacking avenue throughout the night, but the first goal came literally out of left field as Roy Krishna fizzed in a cross which was turned home by Roly Bonevacia for his first goal of the season.

The contest was messy at times as neither side could control the centre of the park, but the Phoenix’s defensive core proved solid, with the Victory taking 60 minutes to get a shot on target.

That shot - a Leigh Bloxham volley - nearly levelled the scores, but Phoenix custodian Glen Moss was on hand to make a top drawer save.

Melbourne continued to press and had the better of chunks of the second spell, but the hosts held steady, forcing the Victory to send players further forward in search of an equaliser.

After several spurned chances

to seal the deal, the superb Jacob Tratt popped up to send the home fans into delirium, and Barba-

Lynn ruled out of NZ series

Kiwi middle distance runner Nikki Hamblin and American Abbey D’Agostino have been nominated for a new international Laureus award although their acclaimed union in the Rio Olympics is well behind the leader in the early voting.

Hamblin and D’Agostino crashed in the 5000m heats at the Rio Olympics then helped each other to the finish line despite the American suffering a serious knee injury.

Hamblin said at the time: “You come into an Olympic Games and everyone wants to win, everyone wants to medal.

“But really as disappointing as this experience is there is so much more to this than a medal.”

The famous incident is one of six nominated for the Laureus Best Sporting Moment of the Year Award, which is voted on by the public.

Australian batsman Chris Lynn has been ruled out for the rest of the series against Pakistan and the upcoming one-day tour of New Zealand because of a neck injury.

The star batsman made his ODI debut in the series-opening win over Pakistan on January 13, but the pain from a bulging disc in his neck has gotten worse and he’s been ordered to rest.

Lynn has proved to be one of the most devastating hitters in world cricket, starring alongside Brendon McCullum with the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash T20 league.

Australian coach Darren Lehmann is hopeful Lynn will return for the home T20 series against Sri Lanka, starting on February 17, but fortunately for Black Caps fans he will not be in action against New Zealand.

“He’s been playing through a lot of pain even during the BBL and he’s got to the stage where he can’t function anymore,” coach Darren Lehmann said.

Easy trial win for Kawi Kawi enjoyed a winning outing at the Foxton trials ahead of his return to domestic Group One competition. In his first appearance since his Perth campaign, the Savabeel gelding coasted home in his 1000 metre heat in the hands of Jonathan Riddell. Trainer Allan Sharrock said Kawi would resume in the Gr.1 NRM Sprint at Te Rapa on February 11 and he would then run a fortnight later in the Gr.1 Haunui Farm WFA Classic at Otaki.

Zacada gets it together Zacada’s change of attitude hasn’t come a minute too soon for the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman stable. The son of Zabeel has showed his true worth in recent starts and he will be chasing down a hat-trick of wins when he runs in the Aztech Signs 2100 at Tauranga on Friday. “He’s been a tough character from day one,” Baker said.

Volkstok’n’barrell late entry Volkstok’n’barrell will make an appearance, weather permitting, on the final day of the Wellington Cup carnival.

Donna Logan has confirmed that the Tavistock five-year-old will be supplemented into the Gr.1 Harcourts Thorndon Mile on Saturday week.

“He’ll be going to Trentham, but if the weather is shocking then he may go to Counties in-

stead,” said Logan, who trains in partnership with Chris Gibbs.

“We would rather go down to Wellington with him and the race and the trip away would be the better way toward the Herbie Dyke Stakes.

“If we go to Counties then he would have to carry 64kg so that’s not ideal - he’s not a big horse.

We’ll be keeping a close watch on the weather for him as he needs

a good track.” A multiple Group One winner, Volkstok’n’barrell finished sixth, after blundering at the start, in the Gr.1 Captain Cook Stakes on his last trip to Wellington in December.

At his most recent appearance, the gelding was beaten a short neck by Consensus in the Gr.1 Zabeel Classic at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Matt Cameron will again be aboard

The Cliff Brown-trained son of the ill-fated Thorn Park claimed five titles, including the coveted Horse of the Year crown. Visiting Australian sprinter out to hopefully turn heads The connections of Australian sprinter Odyssey Moon (right) are hoping their four-year-old can win over local studmasters at Trentham on Saturday.

The well-related entire could earn himself permanent New Zealand residency if he can claim Group One honours in the J. R. & N. Berkett Telegraph.

“It’s been a race that has been in the back of our minds since he came back so well and then he won the Standish,” said Sydney bloodstock agent James Harron, who manages Odyssey Moon for owner Belinda Bateman.

He was referring to the Robert Smerdon-trained four-year-old’s victory in the Gr.3 Standish Handicap at Flemington on New Year’s Day. That was the fourth career win for Odyssey Moon, who was also runnerup to Pride Of Dubai in the Gr.1 Sires’ Produce Stakes at Randwick as a twoyear-old.

“The horse is obviously building a

nice profile and he’s by Snitzel, who is the hottest stallion in the country at the minute so the timing was right in his preparation to send him over,” Harron said.

“If he is successful then we would be very interested in talking to any farms in New Zealand who might be keen.

“A Group One on his CV would be great to go alongside his looks and his pedigree, he’s a lovely stallion prospect.”

Harron won’t be on course at Trentham on Saturday, but he will again be attending NZ Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale.

“I’m looking forward to getting to Karaka, there’s always great horses on offer and we’ve had a bit of success there before,” he said.

Harron’s past purchases at the sale include the Group Two winners Adrift (Zabeel) and Forever Loved (High Chaparral).

Whopping 11 Panthers ruled out of Nines squad Penrith are set to join the Wests Tigers in taking a heavily depleted squad to next month’s Auckland Nines as coaches wrap their stars in cotton wool for the 2017 NRL season.

Less than a day after Tigers coach Jason Taylor asked fans not to get too excited about the club’s Nines chances, Panthers counterpart Anthony Griffin ruled out close to a dozen stars.

The Panthers’ coach confirmed his five Four Nations participants were going to stay home, as would another four players involved in the All Stars fixture.

Former New Zealand internationals Dean Whare and Peta Hiku also won’t be considered as they continue their comebacks from major knee injuries.

“Dean only just got cleared with his knee and Peta hasn’t been cleared yet. So we’ll only play people that are 100 per cent fit and that have done the full pre-season,” Griffin said.

“Dean is a little bit ahead of Peta time-wise, but he did his about a month before Peta.

They’ll both hopefully get at least one trial against Parramatta.”

Skipper Matt Moylan and Trent Merrin represented the Kangaroos, while Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, James FisherHarris and Te Maire Martin toured late last year with the Kiwis.

Aiming for repeat Top-ranked Australian women’s golfer Minjee Lee is determined to relive her past triumph at the upcoming Victorian Open, three years after becoming the first female amateur to win the event.

World No. 17 Lee will compete at next month’s $1 million championship at Barwon Heads, south of Melbourne, alongside 18-year-old brother Min Woo, who claimed last year’s US Junior Amateur Championship.

The Victorian Open, from February 9-12, is the only golf tournament in the world where men’s and women’s fields compete simultaneously.

Lee says she is looking forward to the family affair and hopes her own performance replicates the 2014 win that springboarded her to three titles on the world’s toughest circuit, the LPGA. The 20-year-old is touted as a future major winner after snaring two LPGA titles last year.

The former New Zealand, Wigan, Manly and Queensland coach has linked with ex-New Zealand Rugby League chairman Andrew Chalmers to take over the liquidated Bulls. Lowe said: “We do not see this as a quick fix and we will work through the immediate issue of offering full-time playing contracts to the team. “Following that, we will look at bolstering the playing squad as necessary to replace those players who have secured contracts elsewhere.”

The 28-year-old, who has played 47 tests for the All Blacks, has posted a video on the Chiefs’ Facebook page confirming his departure at the end of the Super Rugby season.

“It’s with great sadness but also excitement that I’ll be playing my last year here in New Zealand, representing Manawatu, the Chiefs and the

All Blacks, three teams that I love dearly,” Cruden said in the video.

“In saying that the excitement comes from the fact I’ve signed a three-year deal with Montpellier in France, a beautiful part of the world. A fantastic rugby club and a real opportunity to go out there and experience something different, something fresh and that really excites me. It’s going to be a fantastic challenge that I have ahead,” he said.

“Just personally I’d like to thank all the rugby fans around New Zealand for their loyal and continued support that you’ve given me throughout my career. I wouldn’t have been able to go out all those weeks if that support wasn’t there from you so I do sincerely thank you for that,” Cruden added.

“My friends and family too.

They’ve stuck by me and given me all that support needed for a young kid from Palmy to live out a childhood dream. I

consider myself very lucky to be able to do that and played at the highest level of rugby in New Zealand.

“Even though it’s coming to an end I look forward to the next six months - firstly the Super Rugby with the Chiefs and hopefully making a good run at the title there and if the future holds an All Black jersey for me in the Lions series, I’ll be working my butt off to make sure that happens.”
