Cowell considers fatherhood again Simon Cowell is open to the idea of adding a second child to his brood because fatherhood is “fun”. The 55-year-old music mogul welcomed his first son, Eric, with girlfriend Lauren Silverman in February last year, and he admits having another baby could be on the cards. “I wouldn’t rule anything out right now. It’s been fun and much easier than I thought. He’s adorable, so maybe I just won’t make plans and see what happens ... The last year has been kind of unexpected but good, I’m enjoying it,” Cowell has told Britain’s Daily Star newspaper.

Grit, determination aplenty A marathon runner is being hailed for her grit and determination after she collapsed while running a Texas marathon and crawled the final 300 metres to finish in third place. Twenty-nine-year-old Hyvon Ngetich of Kenya had broken from the women’s pack during the recent Austin Marathon and was leading late in the race. Race director John Conley says Ngetich began to stagger with about 600 metres to go and later fell. A medical team monitored her as she crawled toward the finish with thousands of spectators cheering her on. At one point she was offered a wheelchair but declined.

She finished in third place in the women’s division with a time of 3:04:03. Conley says Ngetich acknowledged she didn’t eat enough prior to the race.

Travolta action movie will film in Ohio

An independent movie starring John Travolta is going to be shot in central Ohio. The action-thriller called I Am Wrath will begin filming in Columbus in March. John Daugherty of the Greater Columbus Film Commission tells The Columbus Dispatch that the movie will have about a $10 million budget, making it one of the bigger projects to come to the city in recent years. Travolta is portraying a man out for justice after a group of corrupt policemen are unable to catch his wife’s killer.

Daugherty says he got a call in January after producers visited the Columbus area. They picked it over locations in Mississippi.

He says Ohio’s motion picture tax incentive was a factor in luring them here.

Filming is expected to last several weeks.

Desecration ‘disgraceful’ The last remaining monument at the historic Maori Gully cemetery has been desecrated.

The 1872 grave of James McGaffin is the last remaining sign of a former goldrush town, and the only marked grave in the cemetery. It was restored by the Grey District Council about eight years ago.

Contractors discovered the damage when they went to mow the lawn this week, finding that the headstone had been knocked over, smashing into several pieces.

Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn said the damage was “disgraceful”. “You know what is sad about that? That is the only remaining gravestone at Maori Gully, it is the only remaining thing of a vibrant goldmining town, everything else is bush,” Mr Kokshoorn said. The council previously had the headstone reconditioned and the wrought iron fence fixed. The cemetery is located 5km along Maori Gully Road, near Kokiri, and up a bush track.

Winz violence on the rise

Work and Income (Winz) offices across the country have experienced a surge in violent incidents following the Ashburton Winz shootings last year.

Ministry of Social Development chief executive Brendan Boyle told a parliamentary select committee yesterday there had been a massive scaling-up of security at Work and Income

offices since last year’s fatal shootings.

Mr Boyle said the increase in incidents was down to a combination of people “piggy-backing” off the tragedy, and also the zero-tolerance approach the ministry was taking towards violent behaviour.

A Ministry of Social Development spokesman said 278 additional security staff had been added to sites since September

3, 2014. New security processes were also implemented, including controlled access at all Work and Income public facing sites.

The new processes mean security guards control entry to sites, and may require people to provide proof of identity.

It also means that any person who presents as a risk will be declined access.

The total number of incidents at all Ministry of Social Devel-

opment sites, excluding Child, Youth and Family residences, has risen significantly in the past two years.

Ministry of Social Development data released to the Guardian shows 4013 incidents were recorded across the country last year, up from 2440 in 2013.

Of the 4013 incidents last year, 19 were deemed to be ‘critical’, while 599 were considered ‘serious’.

Homeless man Russell John Tully, 48, has been charged with murdering Work and Income staff members Peggy Noble and Leigh Cleveland in Ashburton on September 1.

He is also accused of attempting to murder a third worker, Lindy Curtis.

His trial will begin in the High Court in Christchurch on May 11.

To counter that, the trust was pushing ahead with the completion of an upgrade of accommodation at the hotel to lift it to four star plus.

The trust was now in a new trading environment in terms of its bars and while that was difficult there was some comfort in knowing the new laws were having the same impact across most of the country.

The important thing now was how each individual hospitality outlet dealt with the change, he said.

“The reality is we’ll have to take costs out, there’s not much else we can do.”

Fruit fly reportedly found in Auckland A fruit fly has reportedly been found in Auckland.

The Ministry for Primary Industries is putting up signs in the suburb of Sandringham, NewstalkZB reported.

The signs are asking people not to move any fresh fruit or vegetables beyond the area.

MPI has confirmed a fruit fly has been found. It was collected

from a trap in Grey Lynn late on Monday afternoon, and formally identified as a male Queensland fruit fly late on Tuesday, MPI said.

MPI chief operations officer Andrew Coleman said only one male insect was trapped.

Restrictions on the movement of fruit and some vegetables outside a 1.5km zone

around Grey Lynn have been put in place by MPI. The circular controlled area takes in parts of Grey Lynn, Western Springs, Mt Albert, Ponsonby and Kingsland.

“These legal controls are an important precaution while we investigate whether there are any further fruit flies present,” Mr Coleman said.

“Should there be any more flies out there, this will help prevent their spread out of the area.”

He urged people to abide by the rules, saying previous operations had shown public support “is vital to success”.

“It is likely the restrictions will be in place for at least a couple of weeks.”

The man who helped convicted murderer and paedophile Phillip John Smith get a fake passport has been jailed for 18 months.

Christopher Ryan Clifton, 25, was sentenced in Whanganui District Court yesterday for an offence under the Passport Act, as well as possessing an offensive weapon and threatening to kill.

Clifton was a reference for Smith’s passport. He was asked by the Passport Office to confirm Smith lived at an address in Palmerston North. In fact, Smith was in jail.

Smith was serving life imprisonment for the 1995 killing of the father of a boy he had been sexually abusing. He was caught in Rio de Janeiro on November 13, a week after flying to Chile and then Brazil while on temporary release from Spring Hill Prison in South Auckland.

Clifton met Smith at Mangaroa Prison seven years ago.

The charges of possessing a weapon and threatening to kill arose after he called police on December 20 as he wandered the streets, saying he was “unable to cope” with media pressure after his link to Smith was revealed.

He told police he “just wanted someone to listen,” police prosecutor Sergeant Stephen Butler said.

After being spoken to he was taken home by police, but his partner called police later saying Clifton had left the house dressed in camo gear and a balaclava, carrying a hunting knife.

He was found in possession of the knife and arrested.

Drivers pay fines to avoid losing licence

Mid Canterbury motorists have paid over $110,000 worth of traffic related fines after tough new licensing measures were introduced last year.

The Ashburton District Court has collected $110,781 in trafficrelated fines since the law came into effect last February, according to government figures.

Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew says one year on, it was clear the threat of taking away people’s ability to drive was an effective enforcement tool for overdue fines.

“Nationally, $20.4 million has been paid to the taxpayer – much higher than the $7 million forecast,” she said.

“Nearly 19,500 people who weren’t paying their fines have now either done so, or are doing so.”

Justice Minister Amy Adams said 27 driver licences were currently suspended, while a fur-

“The Stop Orders are working as intended,” she said.

“Rather than potentially losing their licence, people are choosing to pay their fines.”

Life could become a permanent holiday if your negotiating skills are good and you bag yourself a bargain at this weekend’s Ashburton Motorhome Extravaganza.

Over the past 13 years Murray and Bev Meadows have become experts at putting motorhome and caravan buyers and sellers together in what has now become New Zealand’s number one private sales fair.

It might have started as a low-key event but today it attracts buyers and sellers from around New Zealand.

And this year is showing every sign of being up there with the best of the past, Mr Meadows said.

“We’d be at least on a par with other years and we have some new trade exhibitors which is always good.

to sell and the calls are still coming in for sites.”

Because the fair is designed to put buyers and sellers together, Mr Meadows said he is never sure how much is sold on the day, but he knows many deals that start at the weekend are clinched in the weeks after.

“I’d like to hear a bit more feedback on sales but it’s not really any of my business, although I do know a lot of negotiations go on from Monday.”

That the show has endured and grown, however, indicates there is plenty of seller satisfaction, he said.

The motorhome over caravan debate was a constantly changing one, but currently smaller motorhomes and caravans were undergoing a surge in popularity, Mr Meadows said.

“A lot of the smaller vans you can now drive on a car licence and they’re now the biggest sellers with the big-

ger motorhomes slowing down a bit. They’ll come back again. Motorhomes are still more popular but caravans are making a comeback because anyone can now buy a vehicle that’s suitable for towing.”

Saturday generally attracts the largest crowds but Sunday is the day the deals are done after people have gone home and talked about a potential purchase, he said.

Alongside the sales fair, the extravaganza also provides a reason for motorhome owners to gather and Mr Meadows expects up to 150 will be camped in the showgrounds on Saturday night.

The extravaganza, which will be held in the Ashburton Showgrounds from 9am on Saturday and Sunday, is likely to see more than 300 motorhomes and caravans of all shapes, sizes and ages up for sale.

As New Zealand moves towards celebrating the centenary of the World War One’s Gallipolli campaign, a range of commemorative memorabilia is becoming available. Supermarkets and The Warehouse will shortly be stocking commemorative Anzac biscuit tins, with proceeds from sales going to RSA support services that help veterans, ex-service and service men and women and their dependants.

The tins will be available in seven limited edition designs, featuring photographic scenes of New Zealanders during World War One. They are expected to be available in late February.

Charged with murder A Te Araroa man has been charged with murder and another man with recklessly discharging a firearm after the shooting death north of the East Coast township on Monday night. A Te Araroa man died after he was shot in a paddock. Police released the victim’s name yesterday. He was 50-year-old Tumanako Tauhore. A 30-year-old man has been charged with Mr Tauhore’s murder and a man aged 32 is facing the charge of recklessly discharging a firearm.

The 30-year-old is due to appear in the Gisborne District Court today and the 32-year-old has been bailed.

Girl drought in some schools

Some Methven schools are experiencing a girl drought, and new data shows the trend looks set to continue.

Both Methven Primary School and Mount Hutt College have year groups with significant gender imbalances, according to their principals.

According to data released by Statistics New Zealand, classes consisting of children born in 2013 are also set to see a significant gender imbalance, with 247 boys born in the district as opposed to 186 girls.

With an increasing number of boys filling the ranks in schools, educators have also had to rethink how some programmes are delivered.

Mount Hutt College’s cohort of Year 7s is primarily male, with nearly two-thirds of the group consisting of boys.

While Mount Hutt College has a large percentage of boys in Year 7 principal John Schreurs said some senior classes had more girls, as boys were traditionally more likely to leave and head into employment.

Methven Primary School, which housed the majority of the Year 7s last year, also has a large percentage of boys in its Year 4 cohort.

The school’s principal Chris Murphy said the school’s Year 4 group consisted of 19 girls and 32 boys.

More boys than girls born in past 10 years Data released to the Guardian by Statistics New Zealand shows that in the past 10 years, more boys have been born in the Ashburton District than girls.

In the 10 years spanning 2004 to 2014, 2265 boys were born in the Ashburton District, at an average of 226 per year.

2130 girls were born in the district over the same period, with an average of 213 per year.

The data shows the number of births in the Ashburton District also rose last year.

446 children were born in the district in 2014, a slight increase from 433 births the year before.

“We’re delighted to once again welcome visitors again to Mt Hutt and continue our support of the Methven Lions. As the terrain is steep and erosion likely, riders must descend the summit on the four wheel drive tracks,” Mr McKenzie said.

Admission is $20 per person or $40 for a family, cash only, with proceeds from the day going to local schools.

The admission price includes free travel on the chairlift all day.

This will be running from 10am until 4pm.

The Ministry of Social Development has been grilled

by MPs about its spending, including one staff member’s $50,000 bill for a five-day trip to Australia.

Labour MPs on Parliament’s Social Services Committee asked yesterday whether the ministry was being careful enough with its budget given it worked with the poorest people in the country.

They cited several areas where bills had increased in the last financial year, including on advertising campaigns, contractors, and international trips.

Labour MP Carmel Sepuloni asked why spending on overseas travel had risen from $208,000 to $595,000 in the last financial year.

This included a trip by the

ministry’s chief legal advisor to Melbourne for a fiveday conference at a cost of $50,000.

MSD chief executive Brendan Boyle said this was the going rate for a highlevel management and legal programme.

“That kind of international development at a credible programme is going to cost an exceptional amount of money. In many instances here in New Zealand it’s the same.”

The ministry’s spending on PR campaigns rose from $3.4 million to $5.8 million in the last year.

Mr Boyle said he could not immediately say where the increase came from, but it could have been related to the “It’s Not Ok” domestic violence campaign. - NZME

Three people killed in a collision with a logging truck on Tuesday have been confirmed as American citizens, police say. The two women and a man died following the smash on State Highway 1 north of Tokoroa shortly before 4pm. They were all American citizens, police said yesterday. A man who was the fourth occupant of the car, and also an American citizen, remained in a critical condition in hospital, police said.

Police are currently liaising with family through the American consulate. No further details would be released until all family have been notified, police said. - NZME

Death not suspicious The death of a Mongrel Mob gang associate who was jailed over the drive-by shooting death of a Wanganui toddler is not suspicious, police say. The body of 26-year-old Tyrone Box was found by a member of the public in Te Mana Park in Wanganui on Monday night. The Wanganui man was jailed in 2008 for his part in the shooting of 2-year-old Jhia Harmony Te Tua. Box, who was 19 at the time of the shooting, had been a back-seat passenger in a vehicle from which shots were fired as it drove past the toddler’s Gonville home on May 5, 2007.

One of the bullets struck Jhia as she lay sleeping on the couch, killing her instantly. The following year, Box and an associate, James William Challis, also a back-seat passenger in the vehicle, pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter, and were both sentenced to seven years in prison.

Templeton crash A group of Taiwanese people is being offered victim support after their rental van and a 4-wheel-drive vehicle collided in Christchurch yesterday, killing one of the van’s passengers. Police said a rear-seat passenger in the Toyota Estima van, which had seven Taiwanese people on board, died at the scene of the crash about 11.20am. The vehicles collided at the junction of Jones Road and Dawsons Road in Templeton. The driver and five passengers of the van, and the driver and sole occupant of the 4x4, were taken to Christchurch Hospital with minor to moderate injuries. The death has been referred to the coroner.

Water flows into stormwater ‘Baby blip’

The amount of water flowing illegally into Ashburton’s stormwater system is much higher than the Ashburton District Council anticipated.

Several weeks ago the council launched a project that will see every gully trap on every property in Ashburton checked to ensure it is positioned at the right height to ensure it cannot be flooded by surface water in

times of heavy rain.

The project, dubbed Right Pipe, will also check that stormwater pipes are not discharging into gully traps.

A council staff member has been appointed on a one-year contract to carry out the work, but it is anticipated the work will take up to two years to complete.

And as properties are ticked off, council assets manager Andrew Guthrie said the council is finding about 44 per cent re-

quired some remedial work to be carried out.

“We didn’t expect it to be as high as that,” he said.

The checks were started in Tinwald where there have been ongoing issues with sewage bubbling up onto residential lawns during heavy rain.

There, the results for illegal inflow were even higher, Mr Guthrie said.

Before an inspection takes place a property owner will receive a letter from the coun-

cil telling them when a visit is scheduled.

People do not have to be present during the inspection.

Property owners will also be informed about the results of the inspection.

If remedial work is needed, Mr Guthrie said this is required to be carried out within 28 days.

“Most times this is not terribly onerous, it’s something a handyman can do and it’s not an expensive fix most of the time.”

The cream of the crop set for Ashburton show

There will be German Shepherds galore in Ashburton this weekend, as a club anniversary show attracts entries from around the country.

The Otago German Shepherd Dog Club is bringing two judges from England for its 40th anniversary show at the Allenton Rugby Grounds. It has over 80 entries and will be held in conjunction with the Ashburton Kennel Association annual show at the grounds, which has attracted 480 all breeds entries.

Among German Shepherds showing off their conformation and adherence to the breed’s standards will be progeny of Ashburton dog Philipp aus der newen Hauffstrasse. He is a former New Zealand Grand Victor, having won the top national prize in 2008, and is owned by Gavin and Carol Black of Wakanui.

Philipp has altogether sired over 100 litters of puppies, 73 in England and about 45 in New Zealand.

The Blacks bought him after sizing up his top breeding and showing qualities and approaching his English owner.

“Philipp was very, very popular in England, we were very, very lucky to get that dog out here to New Zealand,” Mrs Black said.

Gavin and Carol Black, with their prize pooch Philipp, are co-ordinating a German Shepherd dog show to be held this weekend.

The German Shepherd breeders own Gavarol Kennels, the oldest registered kennels in the South Island, and sourced Philipp, who was born in Germany, as they wanted to improve their kennel bloodlines.

They bought him for an undisclosed sum and it cost them $12,000 to have him flown here.

His progeny are expected to be well represented at this

weekend’s show. One is Lorde von Gavarol owned by the Blacks’ son Barry who also has his own kennel. Another is Toatahi Outrageous Fortune of Auckland who has previously won a national German Shepherd title.

As for Philipp himself, he will be keeping out of the limelight.

While his showing days are behind him, he continues to father

potential prize winners due to the wonders of frozen semen.

He will get to see an old friend at the weekend, English judge Dennis Vessey who gave Philipp his very first championship challenge in England.

Mr and Mrs Black are co-ordinators of this weekend’s show and will be hosting Mr Vessey and fellow English judge Joseph Summerhill.

Entries open for Ashburton community awards Ashburton’s hardworking voluntary groups have an opportunity for their moment in the spotlight, with entries opening for this year’s Trustpower Ashburton District Community Awards.

The awards were started in 2001 to recognise the contribution voluntary groups make to

their community and since their inception more than $70,000 has been given to groups and organisations in the Ashburton District.

This year $5000 is up for grabs.

The awards are open to any voluntary group or organisation and they can be nominated

by people outside their organisation or they can nominate themselves.

Supreme winner for Ashburton last year was the Mania-oRoto scout zone.

The awards cover five categories; Heritage and Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Arts and Culture, Sport and

Leisure, and Educational and Child/Youth Development Entries close at 5pm on Friday, April 17.

New Zealand’s fertility rate has dropped below two births per woman for the first time in a decade, officially ending a “baby blip” that peaked in 2008 just before the global recession hit.

Statistics NZ says the country’s total fertility rate - the number of babies a woman will have in her lifetime if current age-specific fertility rates stay the same throughout her life fell from 2.01 in 2013 to 1.92 last year, the lowest since 2002.

A fertility rate of 2.1 births per woman is required to maintain the population, allowing for infant mortality.

The “baby blip”, which saw the fertility rate peak at 2.19 in 2008, is seen by demographers as a faint echo of another upward blip around 1990, which represented babies being born to the children of the great post-war baby boom in which the fertility rate peaked at 4.31 births per woman in 1961.

The latest blip was partly a “catch-up” as women who delayed having babies in their 20s finally started having children in their 30s and 40s.

Apart from these two blips, New Zealand’s fertility rate has been below replacement level for most of the time since the late 1970s, averaging just 2.03 births per woman over the past 30 years.

Ethnic and regional fertility rates, which are only calculated after every census, were also released yesterday for the 2013 census. They show that fertility rates in the three years centred on the census were above replacement rates for Pacific women (2.73) and Maori women (2.49), but below replacement for European women (1.92) and Asian women (1.69).

Northland, with 2.55 births per woman, displaced Gisborne as the region with the highest fertility rate, reflecting the fact that 30 per cent of Northlanders are Maori.

Nationally, the fertility rates for Maori women under 25 were more than double those of the general population. However, the Maori rates were below the national average for women in their 30s.

Associated Press reporters on the road to the governmentcontrolled town of Artemivsk saw several dozen Ukrainian troops retreating with their weapons from Debaltseve on Wednesday morning. Covered in dirt and looking tired, some of them were driving to Artemivsk in trucks while several other men, unshaven and visibly upset, were on foot. Angry that they had not received any reinforcement from the government, they said they had to retreat and walk for a whole day.

The separatists said they have

taken control of the town and offered the Ukrainian troops the opportunity to surrender and abandon their weapons, a claim Ukraine denied.

Ukrainian military spokesman Anatoliy Stelmakh said in a televised briefing on Wednesday that the rebels launched five artillery strikes on Debaltseve overnight thus “grossly violating the peace accords.”

AP journalists were turned back by rebel forces outside Vuhlehirsk, about 10 kilometers (six miles) west of Debaltseve, early on Wednesday and were unable to assess the status of the fight. Regular artillery fire, coming from the rebel side,

was heard in the area.

Kiev has admitted that soldiers had been taken prisoner in Debaltseve, but gave no details on how many were seized.

Rebel spokesman Eduard Basurin said hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers had surrendered in Debaltseve. Russian state-owned television on Wednesday showed images of several dozen Ukrainian troops being escorted along a village road by the rebels.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, on a visit on Budapest on Tuesday, suggested that Ukrainian forces should lay down their arms.

Beagle is America’s top dog A soft-spoken beagle really raised a ruckus.

Wagging her tail a mile a minute, Miss P became America’s top dog Tuesday night by winning best in show in a big surprise at the Westminster Kennel Club.

At 4, Miss P is a grand-niece of Uno — in 2008, the immensely popular hound barked and bayed his way to becoming the only previous beagle to win at the most prominent US dog show.

Miss P, however, didn’t let out a peep in the ring.

“She is a princess,” handler Will Alexander said.

A quiet one, too. Not your normal, everyday, vocal beagle, as most owners can attest.

Death sentence A special tribunal dealing with war crimes involving Bangladesh’s 1971 independence war has convicted and sentenced a leading war collaborator to death for crimes including mass killing, arson and looting. The head judge of a threemember panel, Obaidul Hasan, delivered the verdict yesterday in a packed courtroom in the nation’s capital, Dhaka, against 79-year-old Abdus Subhan of the Jamaat-eIslami political party. Subhan faced nine charges that included the killing of 400 people in several villages in northern Bangladesh.

Bangladesh says Pakistani soldiers and their collaborators killed 3 million people and raped 200,000 women during the nine-month war.

Trainers slammed The head of NSW horseracing says his counterparts in the greyhound industry should be ashamed of themselves in light of the live baiting scandal. Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys says the greyhound governing body, GRNSW, has no excuse for letting trainers get away with the practices that have rocked the sport. “Their excuses are pitiful,” V’landys said. Thirty trainers across Queensland, NSW and Victoria have been suspended and nominations for their dogs refused since vision of dogs being trained using live rabbits, possums and baby pigs was aired on the ABC earlier this week.

More Hepatitis A cases could appear Berry eaters face up to seven more weeks of uncertainty to see if they’ll contract Hepatitis A. Australia’s chief medical officer Chris Baggoley estimates one in 100 people who ate the contaminated, imported frozen berries will contract the disease.

But the extent to which they’re affected could vary from showing no symptoms to being ill for several weeks.

The number of civilians killed and wounded in Afghanistan jumped 22 per cent in 2014, the UN says, as NATO troops withdrew from combat, leaving government forces to battle a raging Taliban insurgency. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan attributed the rise to an intensification in ground fighting, resulting in a total of 10,548 civilian casualties last year, compared with the 2013 figure of 8637.

Cop denies trace A West Australian policeman has denied placing a tracking device in a woman’s car to check if she was cheating on his colleague. The sergeant, who cannot be named, is facing the Perth Magistrates Court accused of unlawfully using a tracking device and possessing a surveillance device knowing it was intended for unlawful use.

The court heard that the tracker was installed the night before the officer and his colleague left for a holiday in September 2012.

The sergeant said he installed the device because he was told the woman was using drugs and he wanted to find her supplier.

He denied knowing anything about the woman cheating on his colleague.

Ignore the Greens at your peril Stu Oldham

I

t is a decision that hints of a schism that might haunt the natural coalition of the left at the next election.

Whether he intended to or not – and this will be debated for a while – Labour leader Andrew Little snuggled-up to the Government when he did not include the Greens on Parliament’s Intelligence and Security committee.

By excluding the Greens – and the other smaller parties of the Opposition – in favour of a Labour MP he made the committee a two-party clique reminiscent of the old days of first-past-thepost Parliaments.

The committee has the look of a political old boys’ club and like it or not, Mr Little’s decision will reinforce his party as part of the ageing establishment rather than a potential leader in an MMP coalition.

If it lingers, this perception will be problematic for Labour. It is meant to be rebuilding itself after a disastrous election and many voters will be disappointed that rebuilding does not mean embracing partners.

The leader of the opposition must consult opposition parties when nominating a new member for the important security committee. That this did not happen speaks volumes for opposition unity.

Labour foreign affairs spokesman David Shearer will work well on the committee but the Greens should feel aggrieved they were not offered the seat left by outgoing co-leader Russel Norman.

The Greens positioned themselves as the House’s critical eye on intelligence and security matters and it will be galling – particularly for co-leader Metiria Turei – for it to lose a seat at the big table.

Broadly, there will also be concern among the left that spy agency oversight will be handled by the parties that presided over spying’s development over the past decade.

The Prime Minister’s support for Mr Little’s call will do little to assuage these fears as the committee prepares to be part of a major review of our nation’s security services.

Labour will have another place at the table but on security, it may be judged alongside the party it wants to unseat.

uardian reporter Daisy Hudson asked me a good question: “What do I think of gathering data nationwide about bullying?”

My first response was: “For what purpose and what would be done with the data?”

I asked those questions not because I was worried that someone might find out bullying has happened at my school, but because experience with gathering data to build a national picture has not had a direct link to changing nationwide practice – well at least not in education.

Gathering data is not difficult to do – it’s what you do next that becomes challenging. One of the best examples was the Ministry of Education wanted to share best practice amongst schools. In our charter we had to write three to five student achievement goals for the year i.e. 75 per cent of boys will read at or above their age by the end of the year.

Once the target was written, an action plan was written about how you were going to do this, then the plan was reviewed during the year, and then an analysis of variance statement was written at the end of the year.

This analysis was to outline how well you did against your target and if you exceeded your target, what had you done that made a difference.

Then the Ministry of Education was going to gather the analysis of variance statements, analyse them and report to schools the best practice that schools were engaging in to lift performance.

Which part didn’t happen?

Did schools not write targets and plans? Nope, they did them. Did the schools not send them in? Nope they did that too. Given there are 2400 schools with three to five targets each, the ministry was left to deal with around 8000 to 9000 targets that had been analysed and we eagerly awaited the pearls of wisdom that would drop out of them.

You’ve guessed it, we never got the so called best practice, nothing, nada, zip, zilch and any other word that equals zero. By the way, we are still required to analyse our targets.

So I could produce data that we use as a school about behaviour incidents, and send it on.

Generally speaking 90 per cent of our children behave in a socially acceptable manner, 5 per cent need reminding through low level consequences and the remaining 5 per cent require further intervention.

The data we gather is crucial to our decision making when we intervene. How that would be used nationally is a mystery.

What we do as a school is tailor our response to the needs of the children involved. Children who engage in systematic bullying behaviour will have other issues to deal with as well.

I know of instances in this town where the intervention was Strengthening Families, and that this intervention resulted in positive outcomes for

the child and the family.

In other circumstances Strengthening Families might not be the best intervention.

Schools must have plans in place to deal with all types of anti-social behaviour, and gather accurate information about the behaviour. Schools then need to respond to the situation appropriately. So for what purpose do we need to have national stats about bullying?

Would it mean there would be a regional response? Would there be targets to meet? Would successful stories about reducing bullying be shared?

So now I’m going to voice an opinion (unusual for me) and say I believe the ERO should gather data about bullying while they are in a school.

BANG! That was the sound of doors slamming as three of my colleagues race to change their ministry issued underwear after reading that statement.

ERO should do it for the simple reason they have seriously got their act together when

it comes to analysing data in schools, and producing reports on a consistent basis.

Now they summarise those reports so you can scan them and know exactly which reports will have meaning for your and your school.

ERO are the kings of review and informing schools about their performance. They also have review officers nationwide, enabling them to gather data in an unbiased way and put it together to create national trends, etc.

And when ERO begin this work on gathering data about bullying, there is one question I would like to see on there, “have you ever been bullied as a Principal or Board to implement political policy?”

Quake repair survey on the cards

BY NIKKI PAPATSOUMAS A survey of the standards of repairs carried out on homes damaged by the Canterbury quakes is on the cards.

The independent survey of 100 Christchurch homes would be managed by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and carried out by a team of independent technical experts.

It would focus on new building work that was exempted from requiring a building consent, to see whether exempted work had been finished to a standard compliant with building codes.

Properties would be randomly selected from information provided by the Earthquake Commission (EQC), Housing New Zealand and insurance companies and their project management offices.

The statue of John Robert Godley fell off its plinth during the February 2011 quake, suffering damage to its limbs and head.

After extensive conservation work, the statue was returned to the its spot in the square.

Police have also announced they expect the criminal investigation into the collapse of the CTV building to be completed later this year.

Once a review of all the relevant information was completed, a decision regarding prosecution would be made, police said.

Engineering consultants Beca would provide an expert opinion to investigators.

The criminal investigation was launched in September 2014, after police assessed a large amount of information about the CTV building’s collapse in the February 2011 quake.

“It makes sense for the Government to have an overview

of the standard of the repairs that have been carried out, and there is now a sufficient number of completed repairs to allow an appropriate sample of homes to be inspected.”

Building and Housing Minister Nick Smith said the Government wanted to ensure homes were safe and durable.

“As such, the survey team will concentrate on structural work, rather than reviewing cosmetic repairs such as the quality of the finished paint job,” Dr Smith said.

“It will give reassurance to Cantabrians that the rebuild is a quality one.”

EQC has now repaired 93 per cent of the 68,652 homes in its repair programme. Private insurers have settled 57 per cent of claims.

Meanwhile, a 2m-high bronze statue of the founder of Canterbury was re-instated in Cathedral Square yesterday.

A global war between two corporate crocodiles has returned to New Zealand, with fashion companies yesterday fighting over the right to use a famous reptilian logo on clothing here.

Lacoste and Crocodile International tussled over the trademark in the High Court at Wellington yesterday.

Julian Miles QC, lawyer for French fashion giant Lacoste, said the company had a “raft of registered marks” and “a swag of trademarks since the 1970s” in New Zealand.

The two companies have waged cold-blooded war costing a fortune in legal fees over decades here and abroad, with occasional truces.

“In New Zealand, the crocodile belongs to Lacoste,” Mr Miles told Justice Denis Clifford.

“Crocodile International is never going to be able to register a crocodile mark in New Zealand because it would inevitably be found ... to be misleading.”

Mr Miles said Crocodile was not even currently trading in New Zealand, so Lacoste was not blocking its rival “from doing anything it wouldn’t otherwise be able to do”.

The court also heard talk about the placement and “pose” of the crocodile and the colourful history of both companies

over the decades.

Eleven years ago, the enemies reached a deal in which a trademark first registered to Crocodile in 1961 was assigned to Lacoste.

But in 2008, Crocodile said Lacoste had not genuinely used that trademark, and wanted it revoked.

The assistant commissioner of trademarks agreed with Crocodile – but last October, Lacoste struck back when Justice David Collins overturned the assistant commissioner’s decision.

Mr Miles said the purpose of yesterday’s hearing was to enshrine Lacoste’s right to register the trademark.

Crocodile International’s lawyer Greg Arthur told the court his client, perhaps unsurprisingly, wanted to restore the assistant commissioner’s findings.

Mr Arthur said there was no suggestion Lacoste had copied a crocodilian design from venerated Crocodile founding father Dr Tan Hian-Tsin of Singapore.

Justice Clifford sought to clarify some detailed discussions

around crocodile logos.

“Lacoste has a mark which is just a single crocodile facing the other way, without any words.

It features regularly on shirts.

Does that infringe Dr Tan’s copyright?”

Mr Arthur said it did not.

He said the forerunner of the current Crocodile International logo was used in East Asia as long ago as the 1940s.

The court also heard debates around the originality of what Mr Arthur called the “combination crocodile” mark, which included the reptile and the Crocodile company name in cursive script.

Justice Clifford yesterday noted wryly the “delightful” history and complexity of the corporate battle.

It was expected Justice Clifford would reserve his decision.

That decision, no matter which way it goes, will not be a death spiral for the losing company – the spat was the subject of a separate Court of Appeal case, expected to be heard later this year.

Price dip, drought addressed DairyNZ has launched a campaign to help dairy farmers survive a tough season bought on by a low milk price and drought.

More than 70 farmers from around 30 farms nationwide have agreed to share their information and host events as part of the Tactics for Tight Times campaign, which kicks off this week.

The campaign is designed to help farmers survive the current season and build their resilience for the future.

DairyNZ chief executive Tim Mackle says the fact the Minister for Primary Industries has declared drought conditions on the east coast of the South Island as a medium-scale adverse event, has highlighted the critical need for extra support for farmers.

“The milk price hit a six-year low in December, and dry conditions have exacerbated the situation, forcing many farmers to make some pretty tough decisions, especially as they look to set themselves up for next season,” he said.

“With the double-whammy of a dry summer and low milk price, judgement calls become much more complex as farmers carefully balance the profitability of keeping cows milking, keeping condition on them and using supplementary feed.”

The first round of events on the host farms will be held at the end of February and March, providing farmers with the economic outlook for dairy and cost-effective tactics tailored to their regions.

Mr Mackle said the sharing of information is crucial to the Tactics for Tight Times campaign.

“Many of our host farms are in very dry areas. Events on those properties will address the specific challenges that come with those conditions.

“We’ll provide farmers with as much data as possible from the host farms, both short and long-term, and then back this up with tools, resources and information from experts.”

“No two farms are the same and this diversity has been ad-

dressed with the selection of host farms which differ in ownership structure, the amount of feed they buy in, topography and size.”

He said farmers are already running very resilient systems because extreme weather and a fluctuating milk price is part and parcel of being a farmer.

“Dairy farmers have learnt lessons from the past. This campaign is about bringing that

knowledge into one place, discussing what worked last time and feeding that into plans for the coming season.”

Meat firms blamed for falling meat prices

Prime lamb prices strengthened at this week’s Tinwald sheep sale.

Keen competition for heavier lambs and a bigger yarding than has been seen in recent weeks pushed prices up $4-$7 a head.

Heavy lambs fetched $120-$140, medi-

um weights $105-$120 and lighter lambs, $70-$100.

Prime ewe numbers were up and quality sheep met with good demand, earning $4-$5 more a head on last week’s sale.

Heavy ewes made up to $110, mediums $75-$90, and lighter sheep $45-$60.

Meat companies can shoulder sole responsibility for falling prices, a Mid Canterbury farming spokesperson says.

In September Beef+Lamb forecast an average farmgate lamb price of $103, however meat companies have copped flak for paying around the $80 mark for a 19kg lamb.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury meat and fibre chairman Michael Salvesen said there are a number of global factors at play.

China is not buying the same number of pelts, on the back of tannery closures, which has influenced prices negatively, Mr Salvesen said.

The demand for sheep meat in China has also waned, due to a slight weakening of the economy, he said.

“The demand is still there, and it should pick up again,” Mr Salvesen said.

The political stand-off in Russia is also impacting on New Zealand exports, with sanctions in place preventing Europe from trading with Russia.

“This is creating a big carryover of pork, particularly from Holland and Denmark, which has to find a home aside from Russia,” Mr Salvesen said.

Consumers are overlooking pricey New Zealand lamb in favour of cheaper alternatives.

“There is a lot of cheaper alternative meat available – I’m not quite sure how we can blame a New Zealand meat company for that. Sometimes you’ve got to take a wider view.”

Mr Salvesen said beef markets were holding firm, due to demand from the US. “The demand has been high because of the long-lasting drought in the US.

Most US beef is fattened on feedlots, but high grain prices two years ago saw cutbacks in purchasing.

This was followed by drought-like conditions across the cattle belt, resulting in intensive destocking, which in turn has pushed up the demand for New Zealand beef.

“It’s going to take a while to get back to where they were, so beef prices should remain relatively stable for the rest of the year.”

The weak Euro, influenced by political instability in Greece, has also impacted on venison prices.

Venison is mainly paid for in Euros, as opposed to lamb and beef, which is sold in US dollars, where the currency is stronger, Mr Salvesen said.

The Alfa that really flew A R

eaders may recall that from time to time we are going to pick a car at random from the fascinating book Illustrated Motor Cars of the World. Lily Partel, a young lady from Lyttelton, picked the first car.

Last week Jennifer Ford, a lady who does a lot of voluntary work in our community, saw the book and opened it at page 120.

Jennifer said she loved the Alfa Romeo featured on that page.

We did joke that she did not end up finding a car which bears her surname, but Jennifer said she didn’t mind because she thinks Alfa Romeos are nice cars, and what’s more the name has a somewhat romantic sound to it.

The first part of the name is actually an acronym of Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, the full name of the Italian Company, the second part – Romeo – is the surname of one of the early investors. Whether or not this particular Romeo family claim any connection with one of Shakespeare’s love-struck couple is anyone’s guess.

Regardless, investor Nicola Romeo obviously thought cars were pretty

cool and so began a connection with an iconic Italian car manufacturer.

While its origins go back to 1906 the Alfa Romeo Company was formed in 1910 and began racing cars in 1911.

The company fell victim to a financial crisis faced by their bank in 1932 at which point the Italian government of Mussolini stepped in.

Under government control the company struggled and in 1986 it became part of the

operation was a brilliant one which paid off, with the brand soon being regarded as the epitome of sporting style and performance.

Many of their models exemplified just that, especially

Fiat conglomerate.

In the beginning Alfa Romeo produced top end luxury cars but as time went on they successfully diversified, but without losing their reputation for quality.

The decision to start racing their cars after just a year in

the one chosen by Jennifer.

The car Jennifer thinks looks cool – and she is so right – is the 1952 Alfa Romeo Disco Volante.

What a name and what a car!

It was designed as a super sports roadster powered by

a 2995cc six cylinder double overhead cam motor which produced 200 bhp.

The Disco Volante had a 4-speed gearbox and a top speed of 155 miles per hour.

But sadly the car never went into production.

And that’s because unfortunately there was one teeny weeny little problem with the prototype of this fabulous concept car - it had a tendency to fly at high speeds.

A little ironical really given disco volante is Italian for flying saucer.

And imagine the consternation that must have caused the company directors and designers, who were probably wondering if unwittingly they had come up with an aeroplane instead of a car.

Alfa Romeo have not abandoned the name and they showcased their new Disco Volante at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.

For some readers, especially 007 fans, the name Disco Volante may ring a bell for another reason – it was the name of the fictional yacht owned by Emilio Largo, the evil villain in the James Bond story Thunderball.

Anyway thanks Jennifer, you picked an interesting car.

ll the reports about the classic car racing which took place at Ruapuna and Levels over the past two weekends have been good.

There was a possibility that Warwick Protheroe and I would go to Levels, but for various reasons we decided not to.

We both decided we should stay home and do a few things, Warwick probably did and even if he only did one thing it’s one more than I achieved.

Secretly I think he was politely allowing for the fact we were attending a wedding on Saturday – and a lovely one it was too – and maybe at this age and stage would need a bit of a rest day afterwards.

Anyway the thought of going rekindled some memories of another time Warwick and I went to Levels. Doesn’t seem so long ago – it was only back in 1968. In the words of Simon and Garfunkel I have a photograph. I had in mind getting another one this time, but we didn’t go so I couldn’t.

Back then we went in a Morris 8 and here’s the photograph to prove it - Warwick about to get into the Morris 8 on our way to Levels.

Des Thomas. Championship games appear to be progressing well and the completed triples COC will be at Hinds this Sunday. Let’s do it Allenton - good luck to all the teams.

Allenton Croquet Club Since our meeting at the beginning of the month we have had our annual Garden Walk which was very successful.

The weather was very cold but it did not rain. We sincerely thank Mr and Mrs Winchester, Mr and Mrs Mc Dowell and Mrs Sim for allowing us to visit their gardens.

Earlier in the month South Canterbury held its annual tournament. Our top player, Barbara Field won the O-3 bisque grade and was runner/up in the open grade. Other members who attended won several games in their grades.

The Gala cup has started and this Friday Allenton play Methven at Methven.

Ticket selling for the Easter raffle is due to start on the February 21 The annual quiz will be held at the club rooms on May 1st.

We have welcomed three new members recently and they have fitted in really well and are taking part in all our activities’.

Closing day is the April 18.

Creative Fibre President Mya welcomed a good attendance of members and visitors to our February meeting. We wish Bev, Dawn and Cindy speedy recoveries. Sue presented reports on Area and Festival meetings and also a workshop here on April 18 and 19 on Colour and Design.

We will host the October meeting at the Tannery in Christchurch. Fenn gave a good financial report and Shona talked on articles in the new Spin Off magazine and other library books. If you have any club equipment stored May would like to compile a list for hire, Spinning Aprons are for sale. The sales table did good trade. Thank you to Pam for the display at the library to advertise our Open Day August 3rd. We are still making poppies and World War 2 garments for later displays. 30th will see us on our Mystery Trip. Pauline has invited us to her home on the 2nd and 4th Mondays for friendship and learning more of our craft. Grey Power Ashburton On February 16 Grey Power Ashburton welcomed approximately 50 members to their first meeting for 1915 at the Seniors Centre. President Ruth Thomas welcomed those present and accepted apologies from Mr and Mrs McClimont and Shirley Body. Ruth advised that subs are due in March and can be paid to Shirley anytime now; also that the NZ First bill for three free doctor’s visits for the over 65’s is due for its first hearing in March and deserves all the support it can get; There is also an information leaflet available on Enduring Power of Attorney.

Ruth then introduced the speaker for the afternoon; Anne McKenzie and her daughter Sabrina. Anne suffered a serious brain injury whilst cycling downhill into Governor’s Bay nine years ago. She somersaulted over the handlebars of her cycle and landed on her head after being hit by a mattress falling off another vehicle. She spoke passionately about her long road to recovery and the steps she had to take in self-awareness on the way. She has written a book called “The Brilliance and the Madness” as a chronicle of her journey in the hope that it will help others with similar conditions. Joy Jaine passed a vote of thanks and presented Anne with a tray of fruit.

The raffles were drawn; prizes distributed and the Rose and Bernard entertained while afternoon tea was prepared and served.

Next meeting will be on March 16 2015 when the speaker will be Rona Russell.

Methven Bowling Club We said goodbye to Koa Congdon.

Koa sadly lost her battle to cancer. Koa played at the club a few years ago until she followed her heart and moved to Ashburton. We send our condolences to her family.

Our condolences also go out to David Callaghan’s family. David was a well loved and respected member of our club. He also lost his brave battle to cancer. But David did achieve a goal that was important to him and that was to get his name on the Champions board.

This is what David told me, he said he was most proud of. Rest in peace David.

You will be sadly missed in our club.

South Island Legends Golf Series The Terrace Downs Resort played host to the final stop of the South Island Legends Series on Friday.

Eighty players teed off for the annual Pro-Am in perfect conditions before a cool change brought rain halfway

The Junior Triples Championship was won by Rob Fensom, Ivan Syme and Jim Lattimore.

Aaron Allred had a win in the singles.

On Saturday the seniors had a 2/1 win against Parklands in the centre 8/s. The juniors had another loss this week.

At the Rangiora Farmers Tournament Gene Pagey, Jim Lattimore, Hugh Weir and George Crack were 3rd in their section.

Craig Carter played really well in the Quadrangular. Canterbury had a win.

We have our committee playing in the Langley cup on Wednesday.

On Saturday at 2pm we have the Dave McLaughlin open 4/s. This is Mufti and a BBQ to follow.

Sunday is the C/C triples.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Probus Club President Val Farr welcomed members

Hinds and Districts Lions Club On Tuesday evening 48 members, guests and new members started 2015 off with a gathering at the Southern Rugby Club rooms in the Hinds Domain. The change of venue was to allow members to observe the start made on the new Domain Playground and to present a cheque to the domain custodians, the Hinds Reserve Board.

President Robert Ellis firstly welcomed everyone and introduced local teenager Summer Anderson who the club had assisted with sponsorship to travel to Australia as a member of the South Island Development Basketball Team.

Summer spoke of her experiences, skills learnt and fun she had and was thanked by all members.

After a brief speech from Lioness Christine Bone of Green Island Lions on her campaign for district election, everyone enjoyed an excellent 3-course meal provided by the Hinds Swimming Club. Lions Russell Keir, Alan Harrison and John Davis were presented with Silver Membership Pins and 2+ Membership Key respectively.

Lion Richard Andrews presented a cheque to the catering group and Lion Andrew Smith drew the evening raffle, won by Lion Bernie Davidson.

Congratulations were extended to Daphne Allison on her recent success in the garden competitions. Jenny Beach urged members to attend the 100 Years Salute to the Anzacs to be held late in April in the Event Centre.

The guest speaker, Matthew Mark, Manager of Ronald McDonald House was introduced.

The first Ronald McDonald House was formed 40 years ago in Philadelphia, USA. It is an independent registered charitable trust established to help and support the families of children who are receiving medical care and is managed by a voluntary Board of Trustees, a small staff and many volunteers.

There are 346 houses, 187 family rooms, with 3 houses in New Zealand. The 26 bedroom house is in Cashel Street, Christchurch, and is a home away from home. The focus is on providing a positive and supportive environment for the families.

Costs are kept to a minimum through effective fundraising and the work of dedicated volunteers. They have volunteers who come in and cook evening meals.

Matthew was thanked for his informative address.

MSA Outdoor Bowling Club

These funds had been raised by the Hinds & Districts Lions Club for the new domain playground and came from past projects, Christmas raffle,

fun day plus a grant from Lloyd Morgan Lions Club NZ Charitable Trust.

This had been a massive effort by all Hinds Lions members who were justifiably proud of their efforts and gift to the Hinds Community. The evening closed after the obligatory photographs.

Once again not much to report from the Ladies Section. Last week the first round of the Championship Pairs commenced and resulted in a win to Joyce Cleghorn, Rene Devereux, when they beat Joan Hardy & Helen Dowdle. s23—9. Play will continue this week.

In the Men’s Section, the highlight of the week was the playing of the Men’s Championship fours. a great “possible” final played in a friendly spirit by eight “on the ball” (in their case on the bowls) players. Each Member gave their best making play a big help to their skips, at no stage did either team head their opposites by more than two, and kept in touch throughout.

Right to the last end the result of the winner could have been anyone’s with a nail biting finish the winners were: Dave Muir, Guildford Lane, John Argyle, Larry Neal. Leaving last week victors

tied for third at two over.

The winning team on the day was Ben Afitu, Sonny Sue, Peter Mayers and Chris Treen with 111 stableford points.

Ashburton Rose Group On February 11 members of the Ashburton Rose Group spent the day at Hinds where we visited three interesting places. Before lunch we went to Tash Sim who is a Glass Artist and makes jewellery and leadlight windows. She had many lovely pieces to show us. Next we visited Cuthbertson’s Dahlia Gardens where we had lunch and then wandered about her garden.

Here we saw about a thousand dahlias all flowering beautifully from giant ones to pom poms. Many of the members ordered some to have in their gardens next summer. We then went to the local café where there is a lovely clothing shop and here we were able to purchase garments and have a lovely cup of coffee. It was a most enjoyable day. Our next meeting March 11 will be our Autumn Rose Show and we are to bring something of interest from our travels or inherited.

Rakaia Garden Club Our first meeting for 2015 was held on a wet afternoon on the February 9. 26 members attended so it was a full and noisy room! The speakers were David and Wendy Millichamp from Lilyfields Mt Somers who bought along a selection of their lilies and amazing gumboots they have started marketing. Wendy read us an article she had written for the Guardian and bought us up to date with their family etc and David talked to us about how they were coping in the drought and general information and took questions.

Carmel has organised an outing for our next get together on the 9th March to Jo Free’s Leeston garden and also to Frensham Gardens on Old Tai Tapu Road. We will be going by bus and leaving Rakaia at 12.30pm with expected time home around 5pm.

The total cost for the day will be $30 each with $10 each being subsidised from the profits of the book produced

Ellis set for first-day action Hinds cyclist Lauren Ellis is in the action on the first day of the UCI track world championships in the new velodrome at Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines on the outskirts of Paris.

The men’s and women’s team pursuit qualifying takes place today as well as the team sprint qualifying and finals and the women’s points’ race.

Ellis, Rushlee Buchanan, Georgia Williams and Jaime Nielsen will be out to set a good time with the top eight in qualifying for tomorrow’s first round and finals.

The young New Zealand sprint cycling team have a target on their backs but are ready and waiting for today’s showdown.

The trio of Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins will defend their team sprint rainbow jerseys but are in better shape than at last year’s world championships with sprint coach Anthony Peden impressed with their preparation.

“The work is done. The form is there. Team morale is good.

I am not talking just the team sprint. The whole sprint group morale is good,” Peden, named coach of the year at last week’s Halberg Awards, said.

The US embassy in Kabul seemed to get caught up in the excitement of Afghanistan’s World Cup debut yesterday, congratulating the side on victory just half-way through the Bangladesh innings. The Afghans made their World Cup bow in Canberra against the Teststatus South Asians, completing another step in their fairytale rags-to-riches story. The war-torn country has taken to cricket with a passion and millions are expected to follow the match via TV, radio and social media. With the match barely a quarter of the way through, the US embassy’s official Twitter account posted a message hailing Afghanistan’s “victory”.

“Congratulations to #Afghanistan for their win over #Bangladesh in the Cricket World Cup #CWC15 #AFGvsBAN,” the message said.

■ AMERICA’S CUP

Barker dropped from cup Dean Barker is being dumped as helmsman by Team New Zealand.

Tony Veitch revealed the syndicate’s plan on Newstalk ZB yesterday. He has learned Peter Burling will take over as the lead skipper.

Veitch also confirmed there would be Government funding for the next America’s Cup challenge. That regatta will take place in Auckland in early 2017.

America’s Cup organisers will formally announce the plan next month. Taxpayers have already spent $5 million to keep Team New Zealand afloat after the last campaign.

Prime Minister John Key earlier said Team New Zealand will be largely funded by private sponsors.

“The question for a small country is do you give any assistance at all? I reckon if we won the last cup, people would’ve said that was the best $36 million.”

However, America’s Cup minister Steven Joyce doubts whether the Government would stump up with another $36 million as it did last time.

“We’ll just have to finalise that once we know for sure what’s actually happening with the regatta,” he said.

Labour leader Andrew Little said he would have to be satisfied that a sound business case stacked up.

“Yacht races tend to be populated by reasonably well-heeled people but if it can be demon-

strated there are benefits to New Zealand that exceed any government contribution, then we should have a look at it.”

Mr Joyce confirmed Team New Zealand was likely to get less Government funding this time round than the $36 million for the 2013 America’s Cup. He was unable to confirm any funding details until the America’s Cup Authority formally announces whether New Zealand had secured the qualifiers’ series in the lead up to the cup in June next year.

Mr Joyce said the figure would be finalised once the announcement was made. “I suspect it will be less than that [$36 million].”

He said there would be different views on the merits of it.

“But certainly holding a significant part of the regatta, less than half, but still significant, in Auckland with Oracle Racing I think would be very positive from New Zealand’s perspective.”

Labour’s sport spokesman Trevor Mallard confirmed he was briefed on the outcome of the qualifiers’ series decisions, but not by the Government and hinted it was international sources. He said he did not intend to break the confidentiality he was bound by.

Team New Zealand said no decision had been made in relation to helmsman for the America’s Cup 2017, but the team had been conducting a review across all operatons.

The tournament doubled in size this year to feature 16 teams, split into pools of four.

After pool play the top four sides crossed over, with Allenton beating Borough and

Longbeach getting up over 2014 runners-up and former tournament winners Tinwald.

Time then ran out to hold a final, with the calculators brought out to determine the winner – with Allenton 1 retaining the Ashburton Trust trophy.

The matches had teams bat in pairs facing two overs each pair, and every player bowling one over with the decisive factor being scoring runs without losing wickets.

Every time a wicket is lost a team lost three runs.

By Kris shannon If the Chiefs are looking to increase their physicality and reverse a growing hoodoo against Australian opposition, then recalling Liam Messam is a handy place to start.

The returning All Black will captain the side and add a powerful presence on the blindside for tomorrow night’s clash with the Brumbies in New Plymouth, where the Chiefs will be provided with their first chance to arrest a curious trend.

While the Brumbies beat the Chiefs twice last season, includ-

ing a season-ending defeat in the playoffs, the Canberra-based side weren’t the only team from the lucky country to trouble Dave Rennie’s men.

The Chiefs last year lost four of their five encounters with Australian opposition, beating the Rebels but also dropping games against the Force and Waratahs. Rennie’s three-year reign in its entirety has produced six wins and six defeats against Australian sides, compared to a healthy 26-8 record when playing fellow Kiwis or South Africans.

“It’s certainly something

we’ve looked at,” Rennie said.

“There’s certainly no lack of respect. As we know, they’ve had the wood on us and we’ve lost a couple of times at home to Aussie sides as well. We need to be really focused on that.”

Much of that focus, when looking at a statistical breakdown of the last three seasons, will be on the attack. While the Chiefs have averaged 28.7 points per game during Rennie’s tenure, that figure drops to 24.8 when meeting teams from across the ditch.

Tries are down (3.3 vs 2.5), with clean breaks (9.4 vs 8.6)

and metres made (474 vs 460) also below average, suggesting defences that are toughening up and preventing the Chiefs from unleashing their potent attacking weapons.

“I think it’s just the way they play,” Messam said. “They’re really physical and they get really quick ball and they’re really smart. I think that’s one of their strengths – how smart they are with their rugby nous. It’s just making sure that we can adapt to whatever situation happens on the field.”

Messam’s experience will certain help his charges make the

necessary adjustments, especially after learning a few things while on a watching brief during his week off. The 30-yearold played the part of frustrated fan in Saturday’s narrow win over the Blues, gaining new insights about both his teammates and the coaches.

“Oh mate, I was terrible. I was in the coaches’ box and it’s easier playing the game then being the coach – you can see why the old fella gets grayer as the season goes longer,” Messam laughed, with a glance in Rennie’s direction.

Where’s the cup?

The fixture sees 10 Mid Canterbury club sides take on 10 club teams from Christchurch, with the country cousins taking the bragging rights this year 8-2. However, the forgetful, or cocky, Christchurch clubs forgot to bring the cup down with them, meaning the Mid Canterbury clubs will just have to win it again next year and bring it home when town plays host. This weekend the focus is on local bragging rights, with the first of the Champion of Champion series, with the triples at the Hinds Bowling Club on Sunday.

BY DAVID LEGGAT New Zealand were coy about revealing their favoured first XI in the leadup to the World Cup. The first two games at the tournament have shown what they believe to be their best side.

The teams which make the final will be preparing for their ninth game in – in the cases of New Zealand, Australia, England and Sri Lanka, who were in

action on day one – 44 days.

That’s child’s play for a New Zealand side who played nine warmup games against Sri Lanka and Pakistan over 24 days.

Okay, that group was rotated throughout, but the point was they would have been expected to front up day after day if required.

“Those nine one-dayers we played were probably quite good for that. I think it’s something we’ve prepared for,” experienced batsman Grant Elliott said yesterday.

“The guys are fit, pretty young,

in a good space and scrubbed up pretty well after those nine games. That was about getting ready for nine games in a row.

The only concern might be the fast bowlers, but they’re pretty fit so I don’t see it as a problem.”

New Zealand’s coach Mike Hesson yesterday stuck to the standard line about picking the best team for the conditions against England tomorrow night in Wellington. It won’t have gone unnoticed that Kyle Mills turned in an impressive display there against Pakistan last month on a slowish pitch.

Hesson said that the fifth fastmedium bowler, Mitchell McClenaghan, and offspinner Nathan McCullum would be part of the pre-game selection deliberations too.

After England, New Zealand have seven days off before facing Australia at Eden Park; then a further seven-day break ahead of the game against Afghanistan in Napier, and their group play ends against Bangladesh in Hamilton four days later.

of time for guys to rest up. But also we don’t want top players sitting out two weeks without playing a game. So it’s a balancing act.”

One thought would be sticking with the first choice XI against England, and perhaps Australia if tomorrow night goes well, then jiggle things about for the final two group games.

If they don’t, then Sod’s Law says there will be an injury or two before the quarter-final or semifinal if New Zealand get that far.
