Wastebusters bins public recycling area

Wastebusters Trust Canterbury is shutting public recycling and laying off two staff following the Ashburton District Council rejecting its solid waste services contract bid.

The non-profit local organisation was among tenderers for the seven-year contract, which the council has awarded to present contractor EnviroWaste Services Limited.

Wastebusters will remain at its Ashburton McNally Street site, and enlarge

its greenwaste drop-off and compost selling area, while continuing to operate its other successful services such as its re-use store, on-farm recycling programme and business paper and cardboard recycling.

The Wastebusters drop-off area has traditionally given Ashburton residents a second site, additional to the council’s resource recovery park, for getting rid of their recyclables such as paper, cardboard, glass and cans.

Manager Sharon Breakwell said it was with regret it was closing the service,

which it had continued since its loss of the solid waste contract in 2010. It would result in the redundancy of one of six full-timers and one of two part-timers.

Breakwell said Wastebusters had operated the drop-off service not only to provide for the community, but also to prove its worth to the council in the hope of one day gaining the solid waste contract back.

In brief

First stage of restrictions Ashburton might be experiencing one of its wetter Decembers, but that doesn’t mean residents can expect a summer free of hosing restrictions.

From Wednesday, the Ashburton District Council will move into proactive mode when it comes to conserving urban water supplies, putting most of the

district onto level one hosing restrictions. This will mean alternate day hosing – even numbered properties on even dates and odd numbered properties on odd dates – will be in place for Ashburton, Hakatere, Methven and Rakaia.

Caution with fires urged

Bones moved A complete skeleton found in Northland is that of a female who died several hundred years ago of natural causes. The bones were found in eroding sand dunes in Motukahakaha-Paradise Bay on Saturday. Police say a blessing was carried out by local kaumatua Dave Henare yesterday. The skeleton appears to be that of an adult female who has passed from natural causes. They are from a pre-Christian burial and are likely to be several hundred years old.

Holidaymakers heading to Lake Camp for Christmas and New Year celebrations are being reminded there is a ban on open fires in the immediate lake area.

Principal rural fire chief Don Geddes said campers could use gas fires but open fires were not allowed.

“If we do have a fire and it escapes and we have to get in there with helicopters and other resources, it will be a big bill for them. I would like to think people will be careful.”

He said private property and conservation land was at risk if a fire escaped.

While there is a ban on open fires around Lake Camp, there is an open fire season status for the high country and the rest of Mid Canterbury.

Geddes said a wet spring meant the fire risk was low to moderate and, for the first time in several years, there were no restrictions going into the Christmas-New Year break.

However, farmers burning hedge trimmings or other rubbish are being reminded to make sure fires are completely out as wind could easily reignite embers.

Farmers burning crop residue also have to abide by strict conditions, including keeping an eye on the weather. Geddes said fire authorities would be keeping an eye for changing conditions as the summer progressed.

Power fully restored Gisborne and East Coast residents now have power fully restored, after another electricity outage for final repairs to the high voltage lines in the early hours of yesterday. Electricity was meant to be off from 6am until about 2pm yesterday for final repairs, but the job was finished four hours ahead of schedule. The whole district had power restored just after 10am, delighting locals. Residents thanked Eastland Network on social media for restoring in time for breakfast. The lines in the Hangaroa region were downed last Monday by a light plane crash that killed two.

■ CHINESE SETTLEMENT

Plans still lacking for settlement protection

A walkway that will connect Farm Road with Belt Road is inching closer to completion and it would soon be playing an important role in showcasing Ashburton’s historic Chinese settlement.

In 2013 the Ashburton District Council was given David stewardship of the 2.3 hectares, its two dwellings and cluster of timber buildings that were once the working hub for Ashburton’s earl Chinese settlers.

Over the past three years little has been done in terms of restoration of the settlement, but council open spaces manager David Askin believes taking the Mill Creek walkway through the settlement will raise its profile and its use.

The Creekside walkway is already established through Argyle Park and Turton Green subdividision but work has yet to start on a street alongside the Alton Place housing area.

Askin is hoping he can take this over a bridge and along private land on the opposite of Alton Green’s Creekside houses before it exits onto Allens Road.

The walkway would then take

users across Allens Road and into the Chinese settlement.

While the council has signed an agreement to look after the site, little has been done in the area since it was given stewardship of the historic site.

The council is still looking at its options and deciding which buildings are Askin the most important to save, said council business support group manager Paul Brake.

“We still need to scope out what we want to do and we’re trying to find a Chinese customers expert to assist us and give us their view,” he said.

In the past the council has been criticised both for not pushing ahead with the restoration and for taking on the work.

The Guardian has also fielded comments from residents about the lack of progress on tidying up the buildings and land.

The settlement dates back to the 1920s when it became a thriving market garden. It grew to include 12 houses and a range of workshops, sheds and single men’s accommodation quarters and at its peak was home to about 80 people.

Family history told in recipes

Nola Lovett was famous in Mid Canterbury for her cooking ability and now her granddaughter Julia Christie has published a book of her best recipes.

Christie says the book started out as a small project to retype her Nan’s handwritten recipes and escalated into an 88-page colour book with more than 60 recipes. The first 100 books printed have already been sold or given away to family members and another 150 have been reprinted.

She says Lovett’s family, which is mostly in Mid Canterbury, was keen to buy the book but there were also a lot of other people in the community who would remember and enjoy her recipes.

Nola and Stuart Lovett farmed at Seafield and the sheep and arable property was converted to a dairy farm by son Tim in 2009.

Daughter Angie (Christie’s mum) married Stan Taylor and farm in Timaru, where Christie is an accountant.

She said her grandmother’s legendary skills in the kitchen were recalled at her funeral in Ashburton last year and it was the catalyst for her to collate all the handwritten recipes.

“I started out typing them up and giving them to family. Then I became a mother and the whole recipe thing got out of control.

I made every single recipe and while my daughter slept I photographed them.”

Christie said she enlisted the help of a friend to lay out the photos and words and sent them off to the publisher.

“And now I have a recipe book attributed to Nan and mum.”

Christie has inherited the cooking gene.

There are a few personal photos amongst the recipes, which her Nan served up to her farming family and visitors who were lucky to dine at her table.

The Guardian featured one of Lovett’s recipes in its regular cooking column during the 1990s.

She was also a regular at Fair-

ton Women’s Institute meetings and a founding member of the Ashburton Doll Club.

Christie said her favourite recipe was one for chocolate mallow muffins and the book also featured recipes using broccoli and other vegetables grown by Greg and Jo Lovett, who are another branch of the family.

She tried to keep the project a secret but was forced to seek help from her mum Angie when converting the ingredient quantities and cooking times to metric.

“The quiche recipe just said combine all the ingredients and cook, and she would have been using coal ranges and just instinctively knew how long to cook things for.”

The whole project took just five months and Christie says the result is a family history told in recipes.

Christie said she posted about the recipe book on Facebook last weekend and was inundated with requests. The recipe books are also available at the Ashburton iSite for $40.

■ CABINET RESHUFFLE

Backbenchers promoted Four new ministers have been appointed and the portfolios of some of New Zealand’s most senior ministers have been shuffled as part of Prime Minister Bill English’s new-look cabinet.

Backbenchers Mark Mitchell, Jacqui Dean and David Bennett will be ministers outside cabinet, while Alfred Ngaro has been promoted directly to cabinet as Minister for Pacific Peoples.

Simon Bridges and Amy Adams have moved up the cabinet rankings and have additional responsibilities – Mr English says they’re “high performing ministers”.

Ms Adams keeps justice and has been given social housing, previously held by Mr English’s deputy Paula Bennett.

The changes would be effective from today, and Wastebusters would close for the afternoon so it could install improvements to the green waste drop-off facility.

Tendering for the solid waste contract went out in August, and council awarded it at an in-committee meeting on Thursday, releasing the decision late on Friday.

Service delivery committee chairman Stuart Wilson said EnviroWaste’s bid came in at a “very competitive cost for ratepayers”.

And next year involved a major development in kerbside collection, with the introduction of wheelie bins.

“It was critical that we secure a contractor who could effectively and efficiently meet the demands of a wheelie bin service, as well our other waste recovery services,” Wilson said.

EnviroWaste will continue to be responsible for the district’s kerbside collection, recycling, residual waste and operation of the resource recovery parks, as well as introduction of wheelie bins in September.

■ CHRISTMAS FUNDRAISER

Mid Canterbury Choir members are pleased with their best attendances ever at their Christmas Concerts at St Stephen’s Church on Friday. Manager Carol Gunn said there were just over 200 at the lunchtime concert and 235 at the teatime concert. The programme had delighted the audience. “Everyone, including the choir, had their souls enriched by the wonderful music,” Gunn said.

The choir was now looking forward to a break from rehearsals but would be back together in early February rehearsing for their next concert, with guest conductor and organist Martin Setchell, for Mothers’ Day in May.

Car fire A State Highway 1 motorist found themselves dialling 111 after a mechanical issue in their older car’s engine caused a fire late on Friday night. The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade attended the call-out, north of Fairton.

Chief Alan Burgess said the car was “fully involved” by the time members arrived, and completely destroyed in the blaze.

Rubbish fires The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade attended two rubbish fires at the weekend, one on Saturday and one yesterday. It also attended a tree fire by the Ashburton River bed, which Burgess said would be treated as suspicious.

Riley happy with a racket in his hand

Seven-year-old Riley Green loves to hold a racket in his hand and has big goals in his sights.

Playing tennis against people three years older than you is a tough match-up, but Riley Green is up to the challenge.

The seven-year-old is constantly competing against players two to three years his senior and although he does not come out on top all the time, he does not give up easily.

Green has a passion for the game, coach Andrea van Rooyen says.

Van Rooyen said it does not matter whether it is in a competition, a game against his older brother, Tyler, or training – Green loves nothing more than having a racket in his hand.

He said he believes if Riley is guided and allowed room to grow, he will become an exceptional tennis player.

Green has a temperament perfect for the game and a determined personality, van Rooyen said.

One example he used was when Green lost to Jacob Adam in the Labour Day Weekend tournament.

Despite Adam being three years older, Green trained and trained for their next match which was held on November 27.

Green walked away with a win.

Van Rooyen said his determination will take him far which suits Green who is eyeing up a scholarship to the United States when he is older.

He knows it will take a lot of training but Green is more than prepared.

“He does more than 20 hours a week, easily,” Green’s mother, Stacey said.

“He’ll come home from training and bang the ball against the sliding door.

“He hasn’t broken anything – yet.”

It is no surprise Green has a passion for all things tennis considering his brother plays in competitions Green will enter soon.

To add to the family members with the tennis bug, stepdad Leonard Tyler and sister Ashleigh Leonard also both play tennis.

Green has a string of junior competitions starting in February and is looking forward to them.

■ UPPER HUTT HOMICIDE

Men still sought in homicide The four men seen heading to Lois Tolley’s Upper Hutt home on the night she died violently still haven’t come forward.

Ms Tolley, 30, was found dead in her home on Ward Street, Trentham, early on Saturday, December 10.

Four men in their 20s were seen arriving at the house before the attack at about midnight on Friday, and seen jogging away shortly after.

In an update on the homicide investigation yesterday, Detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Barnett says the scene examination is complete and three people have been arrested on unrelated matters.

But police are still seeking the knife and firearm believed to have been used in the attack, and continue to seek information

on the four men. They are described as in their 20s, wearing dark, hooded clothing.

Investigators are again appealing for them to come forward and explain their actions on the night.

Police say they’ve identified other persons of interest who will be spoken to in due course.

Investigators have been examining CCTV footage and are asking for anyone with more from properties or cars in the area to provide it.

“As I’ve said previously, we do believe the people who committed this violent attack were known to Ms Tolley, and someone out there will know who is responsible,” Det Sen Sgt Barnett says.

Creativity beckons

Colourful artworks fill the home of Ashburton painter Heather Sarin.

The New Zealand-born contemporary artist, who has made a name for herself internationally, is among tutors at the upcoming 2017 Methven Summer School.

Abstract Art is among courses which have sold out at the summer school. The school is proving to be popular as enrolments climb.

Sarin said she was looking forward to imparting her knowledge to her about 10 students on the two-day course, one of many to

be held at the five-day school from January 5.

She said she had been focussing on abstract for her artworks over the past two years, and it was a genre which had a lot to recommend it.

“It’s up to the viewers’ interpretation of the work, that’s why I like it so much,” she said.

“It gives you more freedom to explore ideas and concepts.”

She said painting abstract style was about working in layers and combinations, and it was important to get the design element and positioning right.

Sarin is a returning tutor, having taught at last year’s summer

school as well.

Among new courses are two which have also sold out – Upholster a Bedhead or Ottoman and Cellphone/Compact Camera Course.

Other new courses for which places are still available include Beekeeping, Delectable Desserts, Preserving and Drying your Produce, Furniture from Pallets and Garden Sculptures.

Some, including the formerly popular fly fishing, have had to be dropped from the programme due to not enough enrolments.

Methven Summer School president Shirley Fitzgerald put the increase in enrolments, which

were up by about 50 on the same time last year, to a couple of things.

The courses seemed to be attracting more from the younger demographic, and additionally, were attracting people from throughout New Zealand who were wanting to take their summer holidays locally.

Doing a summer school course enabled Kiwis to get away from it all for anything from a couple of days to a week or more.

“And we have some pretty amazing courses,” she said.

Enrolments are expected to exceed last year’s total of almost 200.

Bicycles, tricycles, scooters and strollers were decorated in all manner of Christmas decorations for the annual Methven Children’s Christmas Party yesterday.

Children and their families eagerly followed Santa on a fire engine from the Methven Fire Station, to the Bank

Street reserve, where a party was held.

Santa held a lolly scramble, Christmas music was played, Methven Lions ran a sausage sizzle, two large bouncy castles featured, and spot prizes were awarded. Spokesperson Megan Blackwell appreciated morning winds having died down by the time the parade

was held in the afternoon, and she also appreciated local supporters.

“It wouldn’t happen without sponsorship from local business, everything is donated,” she said.

The Methven Arts, Crafts and Farmers’ Market was also held yesterday with a wide array of items for sale.

DOC needs tougher stance Susan Sandys

W

hitebait patties may be among Christmas season fare in many a Mid Canterbury home after a bumper season at the Rakaia River mouth this year.

There’s much to love about this delicacy. Not only is it delicious and good for you, it is caught fresh from local rivers. Whitebaiting is something families and friends can do together, employing their patience and skill against a backdrop of the New Zealand outdoors.

But warning bells about the sustainability of the resource are being rung by scientists.

Their concerns are backed by whitebaiters themselves, and there has been mumblings in Ashburton following this year’s season, about some taking more than they should.

Tales of hundreds of kilograms being harvested and then sold for tens of thousands of dollars abound.

Suggestions whitebaiters have come up with include introducing bag limits, similar to that dictated by fishing licences, and a ban on selling the delicacy.

Whitebait are the juveniles of five species of native freshwater fish, four of which are considered threatened or declining.

Contributing factors to the decline of the whitebait fishery are habitat loss, barriers to migration, reduced water quality and pressure from introduced species.

However, just how much pressure whitebaiters are putting on the fishery is unknown, with no figures collected on how much is harvested.

If whitebaiters had to record their catches, valuable data could be collated which would help towards management and perhaps ultimately preservation of the fishery.

The Department of Conservation is the governing body, and its response to the issue has been somewhat insipid.

Acting director aquatic Peter Brunt said whitebaiters could help conserve the fishery by keeping their catch small, and contacting their local department or regional council office if they saw overhanging culverts which stopped whitebait migrating upriver.

Brunt added DOC was collating information and working with regional councils to get a better picture of whether improvements to the management of the whitebait fishery were needed. And the department was working with Otago University into the structure of whitebait stocks.

So while scientists call for management improvements, the department is still at the stage of working out whether these are even needed.

DOC needs to take a stronger approach, and give more urgent consideration to the suggestions scientists, and whitebaiters themselves, have made in efforts to preserve the whitebait fishery.

A very eventful year A

s this is my last column for the Ashburton Guardian for 2016 it is timely to look back on a busy and eventful year and reflect on some highlights.

Rangitata continues to be a busy and lively electorate. I thoroughly enjoy representing it in Wellington and am really excited to be standing for re-election again next year.

I must thank all those local groups, agencies and organisations that I meet and talk with during the year for their ongoing work supporting our local communities.

Each year I host a morning tea for many of these groups and was sorry to miss this year’s due to the caucus meeting in Wellington which elected our new leadership team.

Being able to meet with a range of people across the electorate on a regular basis gives me a real understanding of how things are “ticking” and I really appreciate people making time to have conversations with me.

Over the course of the year I have visited a number of local schools and also attended the Year 13 graduation ceremony at Ashburton College. There are some inspiring young people growing up in our communities

and it is always great to get an opportunity to acknowledge their hard work and talent.

This year I also had the pleasure of opening the new Radius Millstream Rest Home and last week was delighted to be asked to join their Christmas party and see first-hand how their residents are settling in and enjoying the surroundings.

This week I will be visiting all the rest homes in the district and look forward to offering Christmas greetings to residents and leaving each home a Christmas floral gift.

Each year I also attend the A&P shows in the district. This year I was sorry to miss the Methven A&P Show due to ministerial commitments.

From a national perspective there has also been much happening.

The recent announcement of John Key’s resignation and retirement took us all by surprise but admiration is due to him for the dignified way he decided to bring his tenure as PM to a close on his terms.

With the support of Bronagh he has served our country very well for eight years as prime minister.

I wish them and their family the very best for the future.

I am looking forward to the year ahead working with our new leadership team.

Waiting to leave Aleppo A new deal is being negotiated for the evacuation of rebel-held areas of Syria’s east Aleppo which ground to a halt after demands from pro-government forces that people also be moved out of two villages besieged by insurgents.

A Syrian rebel official and a government official said the evacuation of Aleppo would resume and the two Shi’ite villages would be evacuated, as well as the wounded from two towns near the Lebanese border and east Aleppo.

But sources said negotiations between pro-government and opposition forces as well as their international backers, were still going on to finalise how the evacuations would take place and how many people would leave.

The chaos surrounding the evacuation reflects the complexity of Syria’s civil war, with an array of groups and foreign interests involved on all sides.

Aleppo had been divided between government and rebel areas in the nearly sixyear-long war, but a lightning advance by the Syrian army and its allies began in mid-November following months of intense air strikes, forcing the insurgents out of most of the rebel-held territory within a matter of weeks.

A senior Syrian rebel official from the powerful Ahrar al Sham group involved in the talks on Saturday said the deal was being held up by Iran and its allied Shi’ite militias which were insisting people be allowed to leave the besieged Shi’ite villages of Kefraya and al-Foua before allowing the Aleppo evacuation to proceed.

Children of eastern Aleppo have managed to escape to western rural Aleppo, Syria.

PHOTO AP was no sign the evacuation was happening. A resident in Aleppo said nobody had left the rebel-held enclave and no buses had entered. He also said he had heard gunfire near where people were to wait for the buses.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said thousands of cold, scared and injured people were still in east Aleppo waiting to leave. It said it had received some indications that a deal would be reached soon.

The Syrian government official, part of the team negotiating the evacuations, said: “It was agreed to resume evacuations

from east Aleppo in parallel with the evacuation of (medical) cases from Kefraya and al-Foua and some cases from Zabadani and Madaya.”

The towns of Madaya and Zabadani are blockaded by pro-government forces.

The operation to evacuate fighters and civilians from the last opposition-held area of Aleppo was suspended on Friday, its second day, after pro-government militias demanded that the wounded also be brought out of al-Foua and Kefraya, and protesters blocked a convoy on the road out of Aleppo.

Broadway debuts Cate Blanchett and Richard Roxburgh will make their Broadway debuts in the much-anticipated first performance of the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of The Present. Blanchett and Roxburgh will be joined on stage at New York’s historic Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Saturday by 11 other members of the Australian theatre company. The Present is playwright Andrew Upton’s adaptation of Chekhov’s Platonov. The performances will officially begin on January 8 and last for 13 weeks. Husband-and-wife Upton and Blanchett, along with Roxburgh, have dabbled in New York theatre before, including 2012’s run of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya at the Lincoln Centre.

Quake off Papua New Guinea A magnitude-8 undersea earthquake has been registered off the coast of Papua New Guinea, according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.

The quake occurred 60 kilometres east of Taron on New Ireland island at 9.51pm AEDT on Saturday at a depth of 73.4 kilometres.

According to the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre there is no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories.

New Zealand issued an official tsunami warning for the whole of the country.

“We’re continuing to assess the situation ...at this stage we are advising New Zealanders to stay off the beaches, stay out of the water, not to go sightseeing and to listen to the radio and TV,” a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management said late on Saturday.

However, according to the USbased Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, tsunami waves are possible along some coasts of not only PNG but Indonesia, the Solomon Islands, Pohnpei, Chuuk, Nauru, Kosrae and Vanuatu.

Disney’s new version of the 1980s animated series DuckTales is getting a cast worth quacking about, including a former Doctor Who. Disney said Friday that David Tennant will be the voice of Scrooge McDuck, the wealthy greatuncle of Huey, Dewey and Louie. Tennant played the title role of the Doctor Who series for five years. The trio of mischievous nephews will be voiced by Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz and Bobby Moynihan. Other cast members include Beck Bennett as Launchpad McQuack; Toks Olagundoye as Mrs Beakley, and Kate Micucci as Webby Vanderquack.

Pope eats with homeless on birthday Pope Francis celebrated an active if lowkey 80th birthday at the weekend, sharing breakfast with eight homeless people before celebrating Mass with cardinals as greetings poured in from around the world.

The pontiff received more than 70,000 email messages wishing him a happy birthday, as well as telephone calls and telegrams from world leaders and religious figures.

His predecessor, 89-year-old Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI, sent a “very affectionate” written greeting that the Vatican said was “particularly appreciated,” followed by a personal call in the afternoon and three small gifts that the bore “very personal and significant meaning for both.”

The Vatican did not otherwise divulge the nature of the gifts.

At breakfast, Francis chatted individually with each of the homeless guests — four Italians, two Romanians, a Moldovan and a Peruvian — at the Vatican hotel where he resides, and shared Argentinian cakes with them before heading to Mass.

The guests offered the pope a bouquet of sunflowers. They were invited from among those staying around St Peter’s Square and at nearby showers for the homeless established by the pope’s almsgiver. The pope also sent enough birthday cakes for 1500 people to kitchens serving the poor and homeless in Rome.

White House needs ‘grown-up’ Michelle Obama says the White House needs a “grown-up” and the nation will come to appreciate her husband, US President Barack Obama.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey set to air this week, the first lady says the election has reinforced her view that her husband’s administration was able to inspire hope “because we feel the difference now”.

“Now we’re feeling what not having hope feels like,” she says. “You know?

Hope is necessary. It’s a necessary concept. And Barack didn’t just talk about hope because he thought it was just a nice slogan to get votes. I mean, he and I and so many believe that if you ... what else do you have if you don’t have hope?”

“What do you give your kids if you can’t give them hope?” she added.

Mrs Obama sat for the interview five weeks after the election of Donald Trump to the White House. The Obamas campaigned aggressively against Trump and argued that the New York businessman is unfit to be president.

CBS has released an excerpt of the interview. In it, Mrs Obama does not mention the incoming president by

name. While Obama has refused since the November 8 election to repeat his criticisms of Trump, Mrs Obama comes off as less accepting of the outcome.

In the interview, which was taped on Wednesday in the White House residence, she said the public will eventually appreciate what a reassuring presence her husband was during the past eight years. She compared him to the person who doesn’t freak out when a toddler bumps his head, causing the child to start crying.

“I feel that Barack has been that for the nation in ways that people will come to appreciate,” she said.

“Having a grown-up in the White House who can say to you in times of crisis and turmoil, ‘Hey, it’s gonna be OK. Let’s remember the good things that we have. Let’s look at the future.

Glenn remembered Washington US astronaut John Glenn has been remembered for setting the course for space travel at a funeral service for the space pioneer and former senator who died last week at the age of 95. US Vice-President Joe Biden honoured Glenn for “defining what it meant to be an American” during the memorial service in Columbus, Ohio. Glenn parlayed his spaceflight fame into a political career in which he served four terms in the US Senate and later returned to space as the oldest person ever in orbit.

No bids on Queen Victoria’s bloomers A pair of bloomers worn by Queen Victoria more than 100 years ago failed to find a buyer at a British auction, despite similar pairs previously selling for more than the estimated price.

The fine linen underwear, described as “in good order with only minor staining and discolouration”, were not sold because of the failure of any bidder to meet the reserve price, a spokeswoman for auctioneers Henry Aldridge said.

The spokeswoman declined to

give the reserve price, citing the privacy policy of the company, which is based in the southern English county of Wiltshire.

The bloomers have an estimated price of between £4000 and £6000 ($NZ7177 and $NZ10,765) in the catalogue for the auction.

Other pairs of underpants once worn by Queen Victoria, who ruled Britain from 1819 to 1901, had previously sold at auction for £10,400 in 2015 and for £6000 in 2014.

Trees and powerlines are down and thousands of homes are without power as a wild storm sweeps across Brisbane and neighbouring Ipswich. Some flights at Brisbane Airport have been delayed until the passing of the storm. Ipswich mayor Paul Pisasale says the State Emergency Service has already received 30 calls for help, with reported damage in several suburbs. The weather bureau says 55mm of rain fell in Ipswich within half an hour. A supermarket in Bellowrie was closed due to a partially collapsed roof while Wynnum Esplanade was also shut after a damaged shop front fell onto an unoccupied car.

Harry no longer struggles with royal role

Prince Harry

Prince Harry has revealed that he no longer struggles against his royal role and instead feels the need to “make something” of his life.

The 32-year-old, speaking in an ITV documentary about his charity work in Lesotho, said he used to “bury his head in the sand” but now views life “very, very differently”.

“I always feel like I need to make something of my life,” he said.

“I was fighting the system going ‘I don’t want to be this person – my mother died when I was very, very young and I don’t want to be in this position’.

“But now I’m just so fired up and energised to be lucky enough to be in a position to make a difference.”

Harry co-founded the charity Sentebale – meaning “forget me not” – with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in 2006 to improve prospects for the thousands of children and young people affected

by HIV/Aids in the landlocked African country.

It has since delivered adolescent-friendly HIV testing and counselling services to more than 21,000 people, and plans to expand into four or five sub-Saharan African countries by 2020.

Harry first visited Lesotho 12 years ago, shadowed by broadcaster Tom Bradby, who inter-

viewed the Prince for the documentary.

In the film, Harry urges people to do good, claiming it is “fun to be good” but “boring to be bad”.

“If you’re me, if you’re your Average Joe, if whoever you are, if you can’t affect politics and change the big things in the world then just do whatever you can do - whether it’s in your local community, your village, your local church – walking down the street, opening a door for an old lady, helping them cross the road. Whatever if it is, just do good. Why wouldn’t you?

“The good stories are what make people tick everyday, surely? It’s fun to be good and it’s boring to be bad, but you can be naughty as well.”

Harry also receives praise in the documentary from Elton John, who urged people to go to see the work being done by Sentebale, saying: “If his mother was alive, she’d still be doing the work she set out to be doing, and he’s carrying it on in the best possible way.”

The film, which also features singer Joss Stone and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, shows Harry being reunited with a local teenager, Mutsu, whom he met on his first visit to Lesotho, and the Prince dancing with local children.

A woman was killed and five others were injured when a large eucalyptus tree fell on a wedding party taking photographs at a Southern California park yesterday, authorities said. Several people were trapped under the tree at Whittier’s Penn Park, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. Video from the scene showed fire crews using chainsaws to cut through the downed branches.

Four of the injured suffered scrapes and bruises, officials said. A 4-year-old girl was listed in critical condition due to head trauma, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Plane crash kills 13 An Indonesian military Hercules C-130 transport plane crashed Sunday in bad weather in the easternmost province of Papua, killing all 13 people on board. The plane was carrying 12 tonnes of food supplies and cement from Timika to Wamena, a distance of about 200km, when it crashed just minutes before its scheduled landing, said air force chief of staff Agus Supriatna. The plane was carrying three pilots and 10 other personnel.

Remote Indian villages rely on stoners

The sleepy, remote mountainside village of Malana, in India, has gained notoriety as the origin of some of the world’s strongest hashish.

F

or hundreds of years, the tiny village of Malana was just a speck lost amid the grandiose mountains of the Indian Himalayas.

Nestled at 2700 metres between the higher reaches of the lush Kullu Valley, Malana used to be a four-day hike from the nearest road. Its laws, tradition says, were laid down by the village god Jamlu. People elected their own parliament and disputes were settled in their own court. Villagers would run in terror if an outsider showed up.

But Malana is hidden no more.

For centuries, the villagers have been growing the plant that has made Malana one of the world’s top stoner destinations, and a battleground – at least symbolically – for India’s haphazard fight against “charas,” the black and sticky hashish that has made the village famous.

In 1985, the Indian government gave in to international pressure and banned the production and consumption of cannabis. Possession of a kilogram of charas – a THC-rich extract derived from rubbing out the resin from freshly cut marijuana buds – is punishable by a minimum 10 years’ imprisonment.

In the sleepy mountainous states of North India, marijuana

has grown indigenously for hundreds of years. Local lawmakers and officials say the plant is part of their tradition and empathise with people in steep, remote villages who consider cannabis the only cash crop they can grow in harsh weather and geographic conditions.

Maheshwar Singh, a local lawmaker and the descendent head of the royal family of Kullu, said a look at the old tax books shows that the plant was legally cultivated and sold for decades before India’s drug law.

“It was a multi-purpose plant for these people,” said the burly, cheerful 67-year-old, pointing out the local usage of hemp fibres in making ropes and traditional “pula” slippers that continue to be the only footwear allowed for pilgrimages.

The people of Malana have to haul rations and wood for kilometres to get it into the village.

Though a shabby road has cut the arduous trek to only an hour and a ropeway is being used to transport heavy cargo, the villagers still spend half the year collecting essentials from nature. The other half is spent in hibernation as the bitter winter buries the village under snow.

Every morning, Gori Massi slowly starts the trek to her field,

sometimes singing to herself as she walks up a rocky trail. Walking at a pace of a 20-year-old, the wrinkles on her face and hands are the only indication of her age; she is 80.

It will take her an hour to get to her plants that are hidden far away from the village near the forest line. She will sit there all day, curing high-potency marijuana buds and rubbing them between her palms to juice out the resin that smears her hands black.

After collecting about 20 grams of gooey hashish that would fetch her anywhere between $67-$201, she decides to call it a day. And prays the police spare her fields this year.

“Wheat and other grains don’t grow on this land,” Massi said.

“Nothing else grows here. We have to live like that, and whatever plants we do have are cut down by the police. What can we do?”

The aromatic Malana Cream – a variety of oily hash produced in the village from higher-potency plants with hybrid seeds – has earned legendary status among pot smokers around the world.

Consumed mostly with tobacco, in a joint or a chillum, the pungent hash has found its way into coffee shops in Amsterdam and won the High Times Cannabis Cup at least twice.

In India, this fame has meant an influx of foreign and local tourists into Parvati Valley, a group of mountains around the Parvati River near Malana, that has grown each year in the past decade.

“It’s just become a destination for international cool people, stoners, hikers,” said Florent Dupont, 32, as he sipped tea and rolled a joint in a guesthouse.

“People know they can get the freshest, nicest product,” the filmmaker from France added.

The valley is teeming with young Israelis, many draped in colourful shawls and wearing their hair into ropey dreadlocks, who come for a therapeutic experience after years of military service.

Singh said it is this frenzied popularity of local hashish that has exploded the cultivation of cannabis in the valley. In 2016, the local government estimates 240 hectares of land in the region was used for cannabis cultivation, producing more than 12,000 kilograms of hashish.

The real numbers are much higher as plants are grown on steep edges of high mountains that are impossible for the police to reach.

the villagers, it has also led to a slight increase in prosecutions and prompted the government to send machete-wielding police and forest personnel on long treks to destroy a small percentage of the marijuana fields.

Villagers claim they have an understanding with local officials, who tell them to push their fields away from the village and into forest land, where they cannot be prosecuted for a field that’s not on their land. Police strategy has mainly focused on destroying cannabis fields on forest land.

The few villagers who have been arrested and are serving time for trafficking have been picked up in cities like New Delhi, Chandigarh and Goa. But it is impossible to destroy mountains full of weed. Singh, who has visited Malana several times during election campaigns and is revered by inhabitants because of his royal lineage, said the government needs a different approach to tackle the problem.

“I feel they have a reason to stick to that plantation because that is the only way they can earn their living,” Singh said. “The government of India had made a policy that they would be provided some alternative employment.

But that we have not been able to do.”

Milestone for Westbrook Russell Westbrook passed the credit around like he shared the ball yesterday.

Westbrook had a career-high 22 assists in his 50th career triple-double, leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 114-101 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

“My teammates did a great job of spacing, catching and finishing, making some shots,” he said.

“My job is to be able to find those guys. The ball is in my hands a lot.”

Westbrook also scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in his 13th triple-double of the season.

He had gone three games without one, yet the league’s leading scorer continues to average double figures in points, rebounds and assists.

Westbrook set up his team-mates for much of the night, but he also showed why he averages more than 30 points per game.

He scored 17 points on five-for-nine shooting in the third quarter to help the Thunder push their lead out to 20 points.

“As the game goes on, I read and kind of see what’s open,” he said.

“And I can go back to different things that I see that’s open and try to find ways to be assertive and when not to be.

“That’s just something I’ve learned over the years.”

Steven Adams had 19 points and seven rebounds and Enes Kanter added 12 points for Oklahoma City, which had dropped two in a row.

Indiana were too strong for hosts the Detroit Pistons with Paul George scoring 26 points in the Pacers’ 105-90 win.

That’s your prerogative and no-one can take that away from you – no matter how hard they might try.

And sporting fans do love an opinion.

You only have to listen to an hour of talkback on Radio Sport to understand that.

Last week, as they do every year, that same radio station started their annual mutterings around the ever-popular and highly contentious Halberg Awards for early next year.

With nominations out late last week, it was a good space filler for a few hours of chit chat from hosts and enthusiasts alike.

Warren Gatland will quit his post as Wales rugby coach next year and return home to New Zealand, according to a UK media report.

The Daily Mail reports Gatland will stay in New Zealand after he’s coached the British and Irish Lions tour in June and July next year.

The 53-year-old former All Black, who took charge of Wales in 2007, would need to cut short a lucrative six-year extension he signed in 2013 to take him through to the next World Cup in Japan. Gatland is currently on an extended sabbatical from the Welsh role, allowing him to concentrate on the Lions.

What it did point out this year though was how tough a few of the categories will be for the esteemed panel of judges to work their way through.

But it should be pretty easy.

Halberg Awards in an Olympic year are usually about as straightforward as drawing a line on a piece of paper.

Since the Halbergs shifted to being a once-a-year event, every Olympic year has seen an Olympian claim the major gong.

The only slight exception is Annelise Coberger’s victory in 1992 after she won silver at the Winter Olympics in France – but even that is drawing a long bow.

With that in mind you can naturally expect Mahe Drysdale to be a leading contender for Sportsman of the Year and Lisa Carrington should have a mortgage on the title of Sportswoman of the Year.

Let’s throw some wood on the fire of both of those though.

Beauden Barrett, Joseph Parker, Steven Adams and Shane Van Gisbergen all deserve at least a second look.

Parker and Adams especially considering their respective successes and the exposure they have provided to New Zealand in the past 12 months.

In the female division it is the usual suspects with Valerie Adams and Lydia Ko expected to be the only ones capable of challenging Carrington, although in a popularity contest

the new-found darling of New Zealand sport, Eliza McCartney would give her a good run for her money too.

Then in order to reach a verdict for the Halberg Award winner you need to also include the beloved All Blacks for another outstanding season and the incomparable combination of rowers Hamish Bond and Eric Murray.

While at a glance it might seem simple, when you break it all down, it’s a little trickier.

So if you’re looking for a conversation starter over this silly season, don’t be shy to use the Halbergs.

It should keep the grandfather awake in his chair for an extra hour or two and there’s a good chance you will get the opportunity to argue with that one family member who thinks they know everything.

Kurtley Beale’s Wasps have lost 20-18 to Connacht in rugby’s European Champions Cup with Jack Carty converting Naulia Dawai’s injury-time try in Ireland.

Chiefs woo Cooper Former Hurricanes coach Colin Cooper is tipped to be named the next Chiefs coach, taking over from Scotland-bound Dave Rennie in 2018. Rennie has led the Chiefs since 2012, and won a pair of Super Rugby titles in his first two seasons. Fairfax media are reporting that Cooper will be named as the new coach before Christmas. Cooper has added to an impressive resume in recent years, scooping a provincial title with Taranaki in 2014 and successfully defending the Ranfurly Shield seven times from 2011.

In brief Phoenix snatch draw The Phoenix mini revival couldn’t last. After last week 3-0 win over the Central Coast Mariners, the Phoenix were held to a 2-2 draw by the Wanderers in Auckland on Saturday night. But this felt very much like a moral victory, as the Phoenix came back from 0-2 with less than 30 minutes to play. A 62nd minute Gui Finkler penalty gave the home side hope, before a Roy Krishna header brought the Phoenix level.

Vukovic key for Sydney A lot of factors are behind Sydney FC being unbeaten and seven points clear on top of the A-League but coach Graham Arnold feels none are more important than goalkeeper Danny Vukovic. Vukovic again starred in Saturday night’s 4-1 win over Perth Glory in Perth with two spectacular saves to deny Rostyn Griffiths and Adam Taggart. Sydney have conceded five goals in 11 games and Arnold is full of praise for the exploits of his ‘keeper.

Diego Costa grabbed the headlines again as Chelsea won 1-0 at Crystal Palace yesterrday to claim a club-record 11th straight win, putting them nine points clear at the top of the Premier League.

The Spaniard headed the winner just before half-time – Chelsea’s fourth 1-0 win in their past six games – to extend their advantage over Liverpool, who play Everton overnight. Sunderland moved off the bottom thanks to a 1-0 win over Watford, while Hull dropped to the foot of the table after losing 1-0 at West Ham. - PA

Fairton put their mark on Mid Canterbury’s A-Grade Inter Club Tennis competition with a comprehensive victory over Hampstead on Saturday at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre.

Claiming their fifth consecutive match for the season, the Fairton side put on a masterclass throughout the afternoon, dropping just one of the six matches to claim a 5-1 win and most importantly snare seven valuable points in the process.

The result could have very easily been different however with four matches going to a tie-break with the Fairton quartet managing to claim the win in each of them.

Continuing on his good week after winning a Mid Canterbury Secondary Schools’ title on

Thursday, Sam Bubb registered two wins for the day, combining with Tyler Leonard to beat Andre van Rooyen and Matt Bubb 6-0, 4-6 (10-6).

Bubb then accounted for van Rooyen in the singles in another close match winning 7-5, 4-6 (106).

Philip Crozier and Jacob Pye won their pairs match against Jade Brosnahan and Mary-Anne Thyne 7-5, 3-6 (11-9).

Pye was the only Fairton player to drop their singles, losing to Thyne 3-6, 0-6 in a match which saved Hampstead from a whitewash.

The Methven foursome of Flynn Ness, Koji Kawamata, Jarrad Hill and Isabelle Talbot came back from a heavy defeat last week to hand out a similar result in their match against Southern winning 5-1.

Southern’s Neil McCann was the only player to pick up a win when he beat Ness, 6-4, 6-1 in their singles match up.

Saturday’s other match up of Allenton and Tinwald was a little closer fought with Allenton picking up a 4-2 victory.

After winning both games of doubles, Allenton put the pressure on themselves when Peter Leonard and Ashleigh Leonard both dropped their singles matches to Jason Feutz and Tessa McCann but victories from Aaron Reid and Dianna Leonard steadied the ship and secured them the win.

Reid’s match with another Mid Canterbury Secondary Schools winner from Thursday in Dallas Scott was a particularly close match.

Reid won the first set courtesy of a 7-2 tie-break victory and

then claimed the second 6-4 after an intense battle.

The weekend’s results leave Fairton five points clear on the points ladder after three matches in the second round while Hampstead’s one point from their match sees them remain in second.

Just three points separate the remaining four teams with Allenton third with 11 points ahead of Southern and Methven on nine points and Tinwald one point back on eight.

In A Reserve action Tnwald continued their domination with another 6-0 victory, their third in a row, this time over Allenton.

Methven accounted for Southern 4-2 and the Hampstead and Dorie match was decided on games with Hampstead’s 51 games getting them over the line ahead of Dorie’s 41.

Sitak makes it a treble at tennis champs

By Dave Worsley It was title number three for Artem Sitak and a first for teenager Jade Lewis at the Pascoes NZ Tennis Championships in Auckland.

Sitak, who is regarded as a doubles player and currently ranked 62 in the world in doubles, had previously won the New Zealand title in 2010 and 2013, however this year he won the title in a rush 6-2 6-0 over the 482nd in

singles ranked Finn Tearney.

Sitak was very happy with both the win and the fact he gets awarded a wildcard into the singles main draw of the ASB Classic next month.

“The match was actually a lot closer than the score suggested.

“I think I played well. I’m really happy with the win.

“It’s going to be great to be in the main draw singles after all these years of being in the quali-

fying and trying for the main draw.”

When asked if the wildcard will mean a singles comeback Sitak says doubles is still where it’s at for the moment.

“I make a living out of doubles and Im ranked inside the top 100.

“It’s not too late to change maybe (laughs), but I’ll definitely be playing doubles in Chennai or Doha in the first week of the year and then back to Auckland and

then Australian Open.”

The women’s singles had two teenagers battling it out.

Lewis, who turns 18 the day after winning her title and Paige Hourigan, 19, on a tennis scholarship at Georgia Tech in the United States.

Hourigan took the first set 7-5 after several breaks of serve, but never really looked in full control as Lewis came back to win the final two sets 6-3 6-1.

Survivor switched seats Chapecoense defender Alan Ruschel says he owes his life to God after moving seats while on board the tragic flight that became last month’s disastrous plane crash, adding that he hopes to be playing again soon. Ruschel was sitting near the back of the plane when club director Cadu Gaucho asked him to move as the team took off to play in the Copa Sudamericana final. “Cadu Gaucho asked me to sit further forward and let the journalists sit together at the back,” Ruschel said at his first news conference since the November 28 accident. “I didn’t want to but then I saw (Jackson) Follman and he insisted that I sit beside him,” he added. “Only God can explain why I survived the accident. He grabbed me and gave me a second chance.”

Stoddart stops Coldstream

Allenton made big strides towards a Pritchard Shield title, while defending champions Tech Stags all but lost their chance of defending it in Mid Canterbury club cricket at the weekend.

On the Allenton wicket at the Ashburton Domain, two individual performances set the catalyst for the hosts to secure a good win over Coldstream prior to the Christmas and New Year break.

The first came from Lyall Jemmett whose well compiled 62 anchored the Allenton innings as they set 149 all out in 35th over.

“We felt 200 was a par score on the pitch the way it was playing,” Allenton skipper Jeff Naish said.

“So we were a few runs short of where we really wanted to be

at the halfway point, which was a little concerning.”

Naish’s concerns were probably further enhanced when Coldstream were 35-3 inside the first 10 overs and scoring freely.

But Dylan Stoddart quickly put any concerns to bed as he went on a wicket-taking spree, ripping through the Coldstream middleorder on his way to an honours board effort of 7-19 off his 8.4 overs.

“It was a beautiful spell of bowling, he really led from the front,” Naish said.

“He bowled well last week too.

“If you combine his figures from both matches he’s taken 10 wickets for 22 odd runs in about 18 overs.”

Bo Houston provided the only sense of an innings in the Cold-

stream batting line up with his 30 runs before he fell clean bowled

by Jack Dudley on the final ball of the 10th over.

Coldstream were eventually rolled for 53 after 16 overs.

The win leaves Allenton with a nice buffer on the Pritchard Shield table heading into the break with theirs an extended one due to the bye in the first round back.

“It was good to get that win and get a few points in the bank with the bye ours when we come back.”

Lauriston kept themselves within striking distance of the leaders with a comprehensive victory over the Tech Stags.

Batting first they posted 117 all out with Scott Morgan’s 40 the highlight of the innings, assisted

by a well-compiled 27 from Alex Hooper.

Morgan Gallagher was the Stags’ chief destroyer, claiming 4-17 off his 4.4 overs.

In reply the Stags could only muster 100 before they were all out.

After his effort with the bat, Morgan turned around and did the job with the ball – claiming 3-18 off his 4.2 overs.

On a pleasing note for the Stags, they were able to, for the first time this season, field a full side for the match.

“We are still struggling for numbers,” Callum Gallagher said. “But hopefully we will have a bit more commitment when we come back after the break.”

Play for the remainder of the season will resume on January 7.

Palmer breaks through rugby’s glass ceiling

By Patrick Mckendry New Zealand Rugby’s newest board member, the first woman to serve on the organisation’s board for the more than 120 years of its existence, hopes other girls do too and, crucially, that their mothers let them.

It’s fair to say that Palmer’s daughter probably has a head start.

Palmer, 44, was a Black Fern for more than 10 years. She cap-

tained the team for the last nine of those. During her career she won three World Cups and lost only one match in total.

In 2014 she was inducted into World Rugby’s Hall of Fame as one of the best women players in history. This year the New Zealand women’s provincial championship was renamed the Farah Palmer Cup in recognition of her achievements.

The former front rower, who was born in Te Kuiti, studied at

Otago and now lectures at Massey University, knows about the game. She also knows about leadership, winning and diversity.

Twenty20 cricket is supposed to be a batsman’s game but the crooked nose of new Brisbane Heat captain Brendon McCullum proves that isn’t always the case.

McCullum has a hazy recollection of his first game with the Heat in 2011, he was left with a bloodied and broken nose from a Brett Lee bouncer.

The former Black Caps skipper is hoping to create some better memories when he returns for another Heat stint, aiming to catapult the Brisbane franchise back into the limelight after three seasons without a finals appearance.

McCullum is a class act on and off the field and showed how tough he was when he returned to the crease after initially retiring hurt from the Lee thunderbolt.

“I can’t really remember much at all from that opening Big Bash game,” McCullum said.

“They tried to put my nose back in a couple of times in the dressing room, although it still has a bend in it to this day.

“One thing I do remember is Wendell Sailor (running drinks for the Heat) going on in the rooms about how tough I was.”

McCullum is an integral part of the Heat’s plans to soar up the ladder from their sixth placing last season and he is one of the most important signings in their history.

A big attraction for McCullum to sign a two-year Heat deal was the chance to link with his former team-mates Daniel Vettori (Heat coach) and Shane Bond (Heat bowling coach).

McCullum’s wife Ellissa hails from Lismore, in northern New South Wales, and the batsman and father-of-three is looking forward to spending some time with his in-laws while in Australia.

With his tattoos and exhilarating shot-making, McCullum should be an entertaining smashhit in Heat colours.

He will play in a far more evolved competition than in the first season when Heat staffers had to race down to Bunnings to buy teal paint and brushes to correctly colour his pads.

The pads required several coats of paint and were left to dry in the middle of the Sydney Cricket Ground on the day of the first Big Bash League game between the Heat and the Sydney Sixers five years ago.

“The Big Bash has become quite a big product, to the point where it is probably slightly dangerous for the future of international cricket,” McCullum said.

“Big Bash games get massive crowds and huge promotion and the Aussie competition is hugely popular in New Zealand.

“It is great to see how well the Big Bash has developed and I always thought if I was to play in again that the Brisbane Heat would be my first point of call.”

There was no-one more in awe of what Master Lavros managed to achieve at Addington on Friday night than the man who spends the most time with him – Regan Todd.

The two-time Dominion Handicap winner produced one of the more remarkable returns to racing after almost exactly a year away from the track when he was victorious in a small, but select, field of trotters after galloping away from behind the mobile and giving his rivals at least 50 metres.

To see the gelding’s massive frame still there at the finish and

sticking his head out at the time when it matters most came as a welcome view considering the disarray of the open class trotting ranks currently with Monbet, Stent and Speeding Spur all on the sidelines.

“It’s good to have him back,” Todd said on Saturday.

“I was pretty proud of him, to do that after being away for so long was pretty impressive I thought.”

While winning was nice, the major goal for the Mark Jonestrained horse was to come through the run unscathed.

Jockey dead after Gore race collision A female jockey has died during a race club meeting in Gore after two riders collided.

It is understood Southlandbased Rebecca Black, who was aged 39 and a mother of three, died after her horse Point Proven stumbled and fell, dislodging her from the saddle.

The fall happened during Race 8, which two of her children were watching, at the Tapanui Racing Club meeting.

The trailing horse, Misscattlecreek, ridden by Terry Moseley, had nowhere to go and also fell and appeared to land on Black.

Moseley escaped without major injury.

Misscattlecreek was reportedly euthanased following the fall.

Black’s former husband Kelvin Tyler confirmed two of her three children saw the accident unfold.

“They’re obviously pretty shocked and devastated,” he said.

He had not seen a video of the accident but thought the horses might have gotten too close to each other.

“It sounded like it got a bit tight for room and they went down.”

He said horses were Black’s number one passion.

She had grown up with horses all her life. Tyler said she had close to 20 horses and ponies as Black ran a riding school as well as working as a jockey.

“She was a horse person. It’s all she does and she’s good at it.”

A police spokeswoman said they were called to the track at 4.10pm. St John spokeswoman Victoria Hawkins said an ambulance was already at the event as a precaution but another one was dispatched due to the “serious nature” of the incident.

She said when it arrived, the patient was deceased at the scene.

Racing Integrity Unit general manager stewards Nigel McIntyre said an inquiry had opened into the reasons Black’s horse fell.

Black rode on the South Island thoroughbred racing circuit.

During her career she had ridden in 1264 races, winning on 108 occasions.

Outstanding local waterskier, Hugh Donaldson, broke new water on the weekend.

The Ashburton teenager created a slice of history at Lake Kereta in Northland when he became the first South Island skier of any age bracket to break 5000 overall points – registering a score of 5350 in his two brilliant trick runs.

In the North Island attending a New Zealand Ski School for three weeks, Donaldson and his twin brother George continue to make massive waves on the water with their results and Hugh’s achievement during the Junior

Masters Tournament is a true testament to that.

In a seven-year run alongside his brother, Hugh has been in New Zealand’s top two skiers for his age group for the past seven years – a remarkable feat for twin brothers.

It was a good time to put the run together for Donaldson with Kevin Firth, the New Zealand Worlds team selector and chief judge for the tournament watching on at the same venue where the Asia Oceania Championships, which New Zealand are hosting, are being held in late January.

There had been firm belief for a while now that both of the

boys were within reaching distance of hitting the 5000 score mark at some stage this season with both excelling in different aspects of their runs.

Hugh’s strength has been his very fast, and impressive, toe tricking having mastered the toe spins and toe wake spins.

George on the other hand has been putting together the high scoring hand passes and is now able to put together a run with his repertoire of five different flips.

It was only ever going to be a case of who could put both passes together cleanly in a tournament first and Hugh managed to achieve that with

two awesome trick runs.

The boys have been under the tutelage of renowned waterskier Kyle Eade during their threeweek camp in the far north.

Eade, who still holds the New Zealand Open overall and jump records, has been assisted in the coaching of the twins by tricks experts Will Coughey, and multi times world tricks record breaker Cory Pickos as well as input from family members Karl, Lana and Rachel Donaldson.

A strong performance like that puts Hugh in good stead with the training camp readying the skiers for the Junior Worlds event which is being held in early January.
